vpc.church/mentalhealth Mental illness has been identified as a leading factor in youth suicide. Youth who call crisis line staff with concerns and/or symptoms of mental illness are likely to be at increased risk for experiencing suicidal ideations and/or plans. Some common mental illnesses that young crisis line callers experience include: depression, bipolar disorder, attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), schizophrenia, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Recognizing signs and symptoms of mental illness during a crisis line call can help staff be better prepared to screen for suicidality in their young callers. -From the QPR Institute: qprinstitute.com Learn more about Mental Health and Illnesses • National Alliance for the Mentally Ill: namivalleyofthesun.org • National Mental Health Association: nmha.org • AZ Dept. Sip & Social Justice

If you or someone you know is having thoughts of suicide, call the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline: 1-800-273-TALK (8255) or email any VPC Pastor.

You are not alone. September is National Suicide Prevention Month The National Action Alliance for Suicide Prevention invites faith communities across the nation to pray for those whose lives have been touched by suicide. Please pray for those who are hurting from loss or struggling with thoughts of suicide or hopelessness. This month is a time to share resources and stories to shed light on this highly taboo and stigmatized topic. This month we reach out to those affected by suicide, raise awareness, and connect individuals with suicidal ideation to treatment services. If you or a loved one has been affected by a mental illness, we would love to have you join our ministry. Feel free to email Elizabeth Weiss, esweiss1231@gmail.com. Every day, we lose many lives to suicide, and many more are profoundly impacted by their deaths. We acknowledge all who experience the challenges of suicidal ideation, and those who have lost loved ones through suicide. -International Association for Suicide Prevention
