Architecture Thesis WEAVING REALITIES FROM COMMUNITY Year Location
2014 La Candelaria. Bogotá, Colombia
La Concordia neighborhood is located within the locality of the Candelaria, a historic district in downtown Bogotá. The neighborhood is characterized by the convergence of its urban border with the western mountains of the city of Bogotá. The neighborhood is not only important because of its convergence with nature, but because of the colonial-style of housing that implants itself along the topographical slopes of the city. The neighborhood housing reaches alongside the school, the main square and the Concordia park. Along the mountain slope, there is an amphitheater called “Media Torta”, used for cultural events of any kind and open to all residents of the neighborhood. Towards the west, the “Eje Ambiental” begins to generate a tangible mark, where it creates a pedestrian and vehicular access to the neighborhood as well as an exit. Despite all of the diverse factors, there still exists a disconnection between the residents and public spaces available in the neighborhood. This is due to the lack of a community center, which could provide various activities for the residents. In the absence of well-articulated community activities within the community, each actor is disarticulated with the others present in the area, generating insecurity in the public spaces due to the inasistance of the people. My thesis project proposes to solve such disconnections by creating a community center where diverse activities can be performed by residents, during the day. This center uses what already exists within the dynamics of the neighborhood and integrates new spaces, thus creating an articulated network of activities. The starting point of the proposal is the route or pathway, through which the existing factors are woven into the new ones. Generating an individual experience is the proposal’s purpose; a small journey for each person, lived through workshops and sports. The main route towards the top of the mountain acts as a healing scar between the mountain and the urban region; both whom are divided due to a main highway and a lack of activity within the main ecological structure of the city. This project settles itself onto the mountainous topography and its form not only adapts to the mountain levels, but these structures become an integral element within the community center. Their dimensions generate a prevalent focus of public space, for the whole community to be active within it, without being an invasive element in an ecological space. In the end the community center weaves various existing factors with new factors, based on the community’s needs.

CREATE A TRIP, A PATHWAY AND AN EXPERIENCE
“The nomadic city is the path itself, the most stable sign inside the void, and the shape of that city is the sinuous line drawn by the series of moving points. The points of departure and arrival have a relative interest, while the intermediate space is the floor space, the stage of nomadism itself, the place where the rite of eternal walking is celebrated on a daily basis. Francesco Careri

The Andes University could be called an Andean Kasbah; a mountain full of stairs, with cozy meeting points. But it lacks a big collegiate space, scaled to that of its prestige, the city and the country. The University is in need of a college campus. The spaces within the existing campus, that used to congregate students now fall short. A recent integration has been proposed with a surrounding area called Parque Espinosa; an urban forum, for both college and city, with controlled access, but open to all public.

Morphallaxis is the regeneration by transformation of existing body tissues. The 10th street suffered a large wound, a strong hurricane wind created a huge way and rearranged the city of Bogotá. This wound modified the urban composition of the sector, generating new tissue and structures within the area. The modern era had arrived to the city and surrounding the scarified wound, large buildings were constructed, making it more visible. This scar, regenerated precariously and today it´s a section stuck in the past. Therefore a new wound has to be inflicted, in order for the city to morph, in order to create new movement and reorganize itself. This is to be done by using what exists, recomposing and changing the rhythm of 10th street. Starting with a plaza that slowly sinks into the street, a consistent state of transit is created through the Carrera 12. This plaza works like a funnel, swallowing pedestrians and transporting them to a different world, creating a connection with the public transportation system Transmilenio. It is an underground world, that elevates again, transporting the pedestrian to a different plaza. After coming out of the other side of 10th street, the circuit is completed with the view of the Gomez building, where a series of fragmented spaces can be spotted on the roof of the building. Generating a new dynamic within the building and the transit on 10th street, this new circular circuit integrates both the Gomez building and 10th street.

Buenaventura is a port city on the Pacific side of Colombia. Its economy not only relies on the port, but also on forestry, fishing, tourism and commerce. Unfortunately, the lack of financial wealth in the city is astounding. According to a Survey done in 2004, 80.6% of the population is living below the poverty line. Numerous families have settled on the coast, building their homes on stilts, above the ocean. The territory is rich in biodiversity and forest resources simplify the task of construction. But the extension of these houses onto the ocean, makes these homes unsafe. Climate change is real, and the swellings of tides are big. Buenaventura has a large range of high tides and low tides all within the day. The average amplitude between high and low tides is 3.11 meters. This project proposes to re-urbanize the zone, doing so in three steps. The first is the construction of a jetty in pier, that adapts to the tides. This becomes a port for fishermen, and a public walkway connecting the houses on stilts. Secondly, the idea of houses on stilts remains untouched, taking as a fact that the people who inhabit those houses are not willing to move from their location. The design strives to be sustainable, with the possibility of expansion at some point in the future. There would be various designs in order to accommodate the numerous necessities of the inhabitants, for their choosing. Third and last, the public space surrounding the urbanization would be renewed. The amount of trash that surrounds the area is large, and that space could be transformed into walkways to connect houses to the jetty in pier, to each house and to the main land. In conclusion, this project intends to renew the urbanization by generating walkways, public space, removing trash, and reinforcing safety within the community of Buenaventura.

Housing Structure The structure consists of a light and simple framework, using industry standard wooden columns and beams. The wooden sheets are 1.22 x 2.44 m, therefore the highest point of the basic structure is of 2.40 m and its lowest 2.10m. This makes construction easy, and reduces material waste. The base of the structure is constructed with isolated wooden columns, inside plastic trash bins fused together with concrete, making the stilts durable.

Every trip has a beginning and an end, and during that time frame, there exists an impulse to document and collect images of an ephemeral landscape that will eventually disappear, into faded memories or due to constant changes of the world. There is a need, a want, to freeze moments of a place, that will probably never be visited again, in time. The art of composing and decomposing creates a new shift in space. Places transform through individual perspectives, turning into dream realities and any supporting material is reconstructed with interpreted memories. The trip is not only an expedition of documentation, but it can be considered an expedition of saving oneself, since these experiences are known to change the individual who goes on them. Each place has a particular beauty, and the traveler maintains his impulse to find and discover new and impacting landscapes. But beauty is fugitive and it is found where least expected. Each journey must have an end, to come back full circle to the starting point, or to a new place where the traveler begins from scratch. If a journey doesn’t end, the experience would not be a state of transition within the soul, and wouldn’t mark a real change within the traveler. The trip is consumed, it vanishes with time, renewing the need to live new experiences. These experiences mark a point in time and in a life; a person without them is a person who hasn’t changed much. Pa(i)sajes is an installation about the metaphor of brevity. Consisting of four projections shown on top of a topographical landscape made out of elevated metal sheeting. The metal sheets, covered in paraffin, have a series of circuits underneath; melting paraffin where there is heat and hardening it where there is none. The images projected vanish as the paraffin melts, and the melted residues create a new landscape on the floor beneath the structure.
