SC bench excuses itself from hearing case appealing military court sentence
The Supreme Court’s threemember bench has excused itself from hearing the petitions appealing sentences handed over by military courts. The bench, headed by Justice Asif Saeed Khosa, was hearing a petition filed by three suspects Nadeem Abbas, Jehangir Haider and Zeeshan, who were handed over death sentence by a military court in Quetta in August 2016 and are locked up in the Mach prison. The three judges, including Justice Qazi Faez Isa, said that they cannot take up the case as they had dissented in the verdict of the case against military courts in 2015.
The Supreme Court on August 5, 2015 had rejected all applications challenging the 18th and 21st Constitutional amendments, ruling in favour of the establishment of military courts in the country. Justice Khosa while explaining the reason for excusing himself from the case said that the three judges had written a dissenting note in the military courts verdict, which had termed the establishment of these courts in conflict of the Constitution. This is why none of us would want to hear the case, the judge said. A 17-member bench headed by Chief Justice of Pakistan
Justice Nasir ul Mulk had reserved the verdict on the 35 identical applications against the two constitutional amendments on June 27, 2015. The bench had dismissed the petitions challenging the 21st amendment with 11 judges voting to reject the pleas and six in favour. The three-member bench has sent the appeal against the death sentences to the Chief Justice to assign another bench to conduct hearing on the case. The court has asked the petitioners’ lawyer to file an application with the Chief Justice requesting him to refer the case to a different bench

petrol across the country has been increased to almost 500,000 metric tons since last year because of higher demand of the commodity owing to lower price compared to two years back. Earlier on Saturday, Oil & Gas Regulatory Authority (OGRA) drafted a summary to decrease petroleum prices
from 1st June. It has been recommended in the drafted summary that the petrol price should be reduced by Rs2.10 per liter. In addition, a reduction of Rs1.80 per liter in high speed diesel and of Rs1.50 per liter in light speed diesel has been recommended in the summary drafted by
the regulatory authority. The price of Kerosene oil is also expected to fall by Rs3 per liter. Sources revealed that new prices are expected to be implemented from June 1 after the Finance Ministry’s approval.

Unannounced load shedding destroying Karachi’s economy: Asad Nisar K A R AC H I , 3 0 M AY (DNA) - S.I.T.E. Association of Industr y on Tuesday expressed serious concerns and reacted strongly on the un announced 12 hours of load shedding by K-E, yesterday from 12:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. Previously K-E started unannounced load shedding from 7:00 p.m. to 9.00 p.m. and 12:00 midnight to 7:00 a.m. Un a n nou nce d f re que nt change of load shedding schedule further affects production causing production and financial losses.12 hours a day load shedding makes impossible to survive in these economic conditions with increasing costs and shortage of supply of diesel/gas for self-generation of power the
financial burdens and problems further intensify. If unannounced load shedding continues there is no other alternative except to shutdown the factories during the holy month of Ramzan. Asad Nisar said that SSGCL has provided 165 MMCFD (1050 BT U ) wh ich i s very good quantity of gas with normal pressure to K-Electric. During hot summer season K-E must use Furnace Oil & Diesel for additional generation to reduce the un- announced load shedding. He said “Industries located in SITE industrial area have been badly affected as most of the small industries who are vendors for the large exporters became idle due to
non-availability of electric power”. It’s a universal fact that industrial consumers of electricity, have been making regular payments of energy bills to K-E. He further said the load shedding creates unemployment in the city and will affect to law and order situation which is already in worst condition, the industry in Karachi is already suffering from a variety of problems in keeping the production wheel rolling and in addition to it protracted load shedding and frequent breakdown in industrial estates, mainly due to efficiency and mismanagement of K-E have further aggravated the situation and rendered the industrial units at the verge of collapse, he
added. He also proposed that the commercial sale of electricity by the Captive Power Plant may be allowed to save industries from fatal collapse. Nisar strongly urged the Honorable Prime Minister, Governor of Sindh, Chief Minister of Sindh and the Federal Minister for Water and Power to take serious note of this illegitimate action of K-E and instruct K-E to immediately resume the normal power supply to the industries in Karachi to avoid total ruin and disaster to the Industries, in fact this un-announced load shedding will also be a big blow to the valuable exports which consequently will largely effect the national economy.

KARACHI, 30 MAY (DNA) - Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah on Tuesday said that the Hyderabad Electric Supply Company (HESCO) and Sukkur Electric Supply Company (SESCO) have failed to serve people of rural Sindh while K-Electric service in the city has also turned to be poor, as a result, people in rural as well urban areas are suffering a lot in this sizzling weather. He was talking to media just after inaugurating Pediatric Emergency Room established by Child Life Foundation at Sindh Government Hospital Korangi-5. He said, “The K-Electric has not failed to upgrade its system but has done a little to include more electricity in its system. Now, the people of this city are facing serious hardships due to prolonged power failure and load-shedding.”
He added that he had held a meeting with K-E management and they had assured him that no-load-shedding would be resorted to during Iftar and Saher and there would be overall reduction in the load-shedding. “But all these assurances proved to be bubble of hot air. Power failure in the city means failure of water supply,” he said. The Chief Minister did not rule out emergence of untoward situation if power outage continued at the ongoing alarming scale. ”HESCO and SESCO have completely failed to serve the people of rural Sindh. About three year ago, the Sindh government had offered to take over both the companies for their smooth, efficient and effective performance but the federal government refused. Today they are in a shambles and they could not be made
efficient even if the Sindh government is allowed to take over,” he lamented. “I know people of rural Sindh are leading a very miserable life by facing 21-hour long load-shedding,” he said. He urged the federal government to have pity on the people of Sindh and improve its system. “The tripping of 500 KV line is pathetic and unacceptable and still it has not been restored completely,” he said.

Ufone supports the cause of educating street children ISLAMABAD, 30 MAY (DNA) - Continuing to act in the true spirit of Ramzan, of caring and giving, Ufone today announced that like last year, this year too it will be supporting a noble cause. Ufone will support the inspiring cause of Syeda Anfas Ali Shah, by purchasing media space on television channels and digital media throughout Ramzan and donating this free of cost to the cause, so that it can spread its message widely across Pakistan. Ufone aims to thus create widespread awareness of the great work being done by Anfas and motivate others to take up humanitarian initiatives, to bring about positive change in society. Anfas is running 7 footpath schools in Karachi and interior Sindh, with the aim of imparting education to those underprivileged children who belong to extremely poor families and mainly do street labour. There is no bigger profession than working for humanity
and to uplift fellow human beings, keeping their dignity intact, and this cause becomes even greater when the focus of your work is children. Ramzan is a time to reconsider, how we can learn from people who are outstanding role models. Ufone’s focus this Ramzan will remain the socio-economic uplift of society through supporting committed individuals and organizations who are working selflessly for societal progress. Anfasis doing her Masters in International Relations and was previously also running a construction business. But now she has completely devoted herself to teaching children. Though she had to sacrifice her own comfortable life for this, she is happy as she gets indescribable selfsatisfaction by helping the helpless. She teaches children ranging from the ages of 5 to 17 years and devotes about
12 hours a day with related activities. By now she has 7 branches out of which 4 are in interior Sindh and 3 are in Defence. The reason she has chosen Defence is because this area is surrounded by slums where great number of children have no means to get education. She got her NGO, Ocean Welfare Organisation, registered as the umbrella organization for her schools. Some 1,500 children are getting educated in these schools, out of whom250 are located in a remote area of interior Sindh, Sandhri. Earlier, there was no school in the area. These street children are taught in a way that they pay back to the society. For example her fifth graders teach children at their early level of education. Moreover, her strength lies in the fact that she teaches self-respect, which is scarce in the situation the children are brought up in. She therefore promotes
self-respect and earning acquired by the sweat on one’s brow, rather than the concept of alms. Children get rewarded on the basis of performance rather than given charity even though they are fed, clothed, and groomed on a daily basis. Anfas also pays Rs 50 to each child daily as a reward, even though her finances are tight. But sustainability of the project is a huge challenge that she is facing, even though her determination and persistence are unwavering and are the foundation of her resilience. She dreams of having these children enrolled in universities someday so that they graduate and acquire degrees. Pakistanis are among the top most compassionate and generous people on the planet. If the people are made aware of this good work, they will come forward in tens if not hundreds of thousands to support such noble causes.
