Opponents have only targeted Sharif family’s business affairs: Maryam Nawaz ISLAMABAD, 05 JUL (DNA) - Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif’s daughter Maryam Nawaz on Wednesday said that opponents have only targeted Sharif family’s business affairs on which questions cannot be raised. Talking to media after facing the Joint Investigation Team (JIT) for nearly two hours in Panama Papers case, she said, “The opponents should be afraid of the day when Nawaz Sharif will go to the masses. They are his real strength; don’t take the situation to the extent that he unveil all secrets.” She thanked the party workers who gathered close to the Federal Judicial Academy (FJA) to express solidarity and said, “Whatever the JIT asked, I answered, despite the fact that my name was not in

Panama case. It has nothing to accuse me.” She said, “After answering all questions, I requested the JIT members to answer a question. When they allowed, I asked what are the allegations against me? They had no answer of it.” She criticized the JIT saying, “All over the world, JITs are formed to investigate allegations, but this is the first JIT which is finding allegations to level. Today, I came to know that there is nothing to the JIT. The Supreme Court heard the case for six months, but nothing surfaced.” Talking about her time spent before the JIT, she said, Questions were asked about our personal and family business, on which no answer is necessary. These questions should have been asked from

those who have no businesses. We have answered about our three generations, today; I have paid the debt that was not due. This is fifth phase of our accountability we are facing.” She said, “By involving the name of the daughter, the opponents want to bring the Prime Minister under pressure. I appeared as daughter of the nation and daughter of Nawaz Sharif. Those who think that daughter is a weakness of Prime Minister, will find me the power and strength of Nawaz Sharif.” She stated that, “This is not the first time I’m being dragged into such leaks. Not even in Panama leak, but my name was also included in Dawn leaks.”

Nepali vice president visits China to strengthen ties K ATH M A N DU, J U L 04 (DNA) - Vice President Nanda Bahadur Pun left for China on Tuesday on a week-long trip that aims to consolidate ties between the two countries. Pun, a former Maoist commander, is leading an 11-member delegation to attend China’s 23rd Lanzhou Investment and Trade Fair, a gathering of business leaders and foreign delegates in Lanzhou, the capital of northwest Gansu province. On Wednesday, he is scheduled to address a forum on the New Silk Road and will also address members of the business community. Along with Malaysia, Nepal will be a guest of honor at the event also known as the Lanzhou Fair. Nepal is reportedly working on a protocol of its transit and transport agreement with China, which was signed a year ago during a visit by Nepali Prime Minister K.P. Sharma Oli. Once signed, the protocol will eventually help Nepal reduce its dependence on India, its neighbor in the south, which has traditionally exercised clout over the landlocked country. Ties between the two countries grew strong after Oli visited

China in March last year and signed a raft of agreements in Beijing. Many in Kathmandu think Nepal was being pushed northward following an unofficial five-month blockade by India in 2015, which halted supplies and chocked the mountainous country. The Indian move followed promulgation of Nepal’s longawaited post-war constitution, which triggered protests from ethnic groups in the country’s southern plains. The diplomatic standoff and the ensuing overtures led to distance between Nepal and India, casting doubt whether India would have a grip over its strategically-important backyard. Last week, China handed over a national academy on the outskirts of capital Kathmandu to Nepali police force, which guards the country’s northern border. On May 12, Nepal joined South Asian nations, including Pakistan and Bangladesh in signing an agreement to become part of the China megaproject -- the One Belt One Road (OBOR) -- that is estimated to cost around $5 trillion for building roads,

bridges, ports and railways spanning over 60 countries across Asia, Africa, Middle East and Europe. Last month, a five-member Chinese delegation led by Chinese Assistant Minister Kong Xuanyou held foreign secretary-level talks in Kathmandu. The two sides discussed bilateral agreements including the OBOR and other Chinesefunded projects in Nepal. But with the change of guard in Kathmandu last month -Sher Bahadur Deuba of the pro-Indian Nepali Congress party became prime minister -- analysts say Beijing worries whether Nepal would follow through last year’s agreements. “I think bilateral visits between the two countries will continue in the next few years because China wants Nepal to sign more agreements and implement it on time,” Basnet said. Apart from the signing of a framework agreement on OBOR, “they have lobbied with the government to sign another MoU [Memorandum of Understanding] so that Nepal is firmly part of their [OBOR) campaign”.

Over 100,000 migrants crossed Mediterranean to EU since Jan, UN says

NEW YORK—More than 100,000 migrants and refugees have made the perilous journey across the Mediterranean to Europe since the beginning of the year, and 2,247 have died trying, the UN said. Between January 1 and July 3, more than 85,000 migrants landed in Italy, nearly 9,300 arrived in Greece, nearly 6,500 arrived in Spain and over 270 landed in Cyprus, the UN’s International Organization for Migration (IOM) said. While the numbers are staggering, they remain far below last year’s figures. During the same period in 2016, 231,503 people made the crossing to Europe, with the 100,000-mark passed already in February that year. But at that time most of the migrants were crossing from Turkey to Greece, and an EU deal with Ankara in March last year effectively hit the breaks on that movement. So far this year, Italy has meanwhile taken in nearly 85 percent of the people crossing the Mediterranean.

Rome will on Thursday host a meeting of foreign ministers from European and African countries affected by the migrant crisis, in addition to EU and UN representatives. Italy has been pushing for other European countries to open up their ports to rescue ships in order to share the burden. IOM chief William Lacy Swing appealed Tuesday for more solidarity with Italy in handling the crisis. “The reception of rescued migrants cannot be seen as an issue only for Italy, but a matter for Europe as a whole,” he said in a statement. The U N ref ugee agency has also warned that Italy cannot continue absorbing the tens of thousands of migrants landing on its shores on its own. “This is not sustainable. We need to have other countries joining Italy and sharing that responsibility,” Vincent Cochetel, the agency’s special envoy for the central Mediterranean, said Monday

The laudable socio-economic development and progress that Tajikistan has achieved under President Rahmon’s dynamic leadership is viewed with admiration in Pakistan,” he said. “Pakistan and Tajikistan are tied by historical and cultural bonds. These bonds have been further strengthened by closer cooperation and regular

exchange of high level visits since Tajikistan’s independence in 1991,” he said. “Pakistan was among the first countries to recognize Tajikistan’s independence and establish diplomatic relations. My visit coincides with the 25th anniversary of the establishment of our diplomatic relations; I would like to extend my heartiest felicitations on this occasion to my brother President Emom Ali Rahmon, and the Government and the people of Tajikistan,” the PM said. “This is my fourth visit to Tajikistan since June 2014. I thank President Rahmon to have visited Pakistan twice since November 2015. These frequent high level visits reflect the importance that our two countries attach to our relationship and our mutual desire to further deepen and diversify bilateral relations,” he said. “Pakistan and Tajikistan have a common understanding on many issues. We believe that all regional and global issues must be resolved through dialogue and peaceful means within the framework of international law. We remain advocates of a peaceful neighborhood and peace for development. The courage to remain steadfast to the

principles of peace, however, must never be mistaken for weakness,” the Prime Minister said. “We discussed the importance of Road, Rail and Air connectivity, which is crucial for regional integration and the promotion of bilateral trade, tourism and people-to-people contacts. We have, therefore, resolved to multiply our efforts to increase connectivity between our two countries. Views were also exchanged on our common vision of a more connected future through the use of Gwadar and Karachi port,” he added. “We have noted with satisfaction that our political and defence relations are on the rise. China urges India to correct mistakes by withdrawing border troops BEIJING (Xinhua) -- China Wednesday urged India to immediately withdraw its border troops that have crossed into Chinese territory and correct its mistakes with practical actions. The Indian troops are currently in Chinese territory, and the matter remains unsettled,” Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Geng Shuang said at a routine press briefing. He urged India to show sincerity in resolving border disputes and developing bilateral ties, and create conditions for the normal development of China-India relations. Geng said the Sikkim section of the ChinaIndia border was defined in the Convention Between Great Britain and China Relating to Sikkim and Tibet in 1890. Successive Indian governments have acknowledged the demarcation. He also cited a note prese nt e d by t he I nd ia n embassy in China to the Chinese Foreign Ministry on Feb. 12, 1960, to explain the Indian border incursion. The Indian government welcomed China’s note explaining the demarcation of the border, saying Sikkim and Bhutan belonged to one side of the border

while Tibet stood at the other side, according to the Indian embassy note. The Indian embassy note quoted a Chinese note as saying that the border between Sikkim and Tibet had been officially defined, and there was no divergence or disputes in the map drawing as well as in practice. The Indian government was willing to add that the boundary had also been marked on the ground, the Indian note said. Geng said India’s recent move has violated the goals and principles of the UN Charter, and trampled on international laws and the basic norms of international relations. In the early 1950s, China,

India and Myanmar jointly initiated the Five Principles of Peaceful Co-existence, featuring mutual respect for each other’s territorial integrity and sovereignty, nonaggression, non-interference in each other’s internal affairs, equality and cooperation for mutual benefit, and peaceful co-existence. “By illegally crossing into another country’s territory, India has tread on the basic norms of international relations it had initiated itself,” said the spokesperson. “How can India win the trust of its neighboring countries and play a greater role in global affairs, if it does not correct its mistakes in a timely way?” Geng said.
