Turkey approves bill to allow troop deployment in Qatar

Govt lauded for its stance on LNG import from Qatar ISLAMABAD—Islamabad Chamber of Small Traders (ICST) on Thursday lauded the government for its principled stance on the import of Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) imports from Qatar. The tensions in Gulf have resulted in some uncert ai nt y rega rd i ng LNG imports from Qatar but the Petroleum Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi has clarified that the recent problems will not hit the deal, said Patron Islamabad Chamber of Small Traders Shahid Rasheed Butt. He said that LNG is playing an important role in power generation, urea production and some other sectors, therefore, its imports cannot be abandoned or reduced. In case Qatar attracts international sanctions then the import of gas would be

difficult therefore government should start finding alternatives immediately, he demanded. Shahid Rasheed But t said that government should also take note of the conspiracies of the oil mafia and some o t h e r d e p a r tments which are against the import of LNG. Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (OGRA), Pakistan State Oil (PSO) and gas companies are damaging LNG sector for their own interests. The UFG formula has been altered; its percentage has been hiked from 4.5 percent to 9.2 percent while gas transportation charges have been doubled in

one year. Apart from all the steps aimed at minting money, the terminal charges have not been reduced despite an announcement of the government which is making this fuel costly. The country receives six LNG vessels per month having 29 hundred

thousand MMBtu gas each. Government departments are now receiving one dollar per MMBtu which translates into around 1.85 billion rupees per month which should be tackled before masses loose interest in this cheap and environmentfriendly fuel, he warned.

Turkey’s Grand National Assembly approved draft bill allowing the deployment of troop to a Turkish military base in Qatar. According to Xinhua, the bill includes two pieces of legislation: allowing Turkish troops to be deployed in Qatar and approving an accord between

the two countries on military officer training cooperation. The parliamentary approval comes after Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Tuesday expressed disapproval of the sanctions imposed on Qatar by several Arab countries. “I hope that all sanctions

against Qatar will be lifted as soon as possible,” Erdogan said. The bill, drafted before the rift, passed with 240 votes in favour, largely with support from the r uling AKP Party and nationalist opposition MHP. The new move appears to support Qatar as it faces diplomatic

and trade isolation from some of the biggest Middle Eastern powers. On Monday, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, Egypt, Yemen, Libya and the Maldives cut diplomatic ties with Qatar, claiming it of “terrorism support.”
