Was there anyone who didn’t watch the Royal Wedding? What a boost for our industry to see so many people in the crowd holding balloons and street parties all over the UK using balloons. They might not have been presented in the most professional styles but that didn’t matter. I wonder just how many red, white and blue latex were used that day? The response to the proposal to hold regular NABAS Regional Events was really positive and a big ‘thank you’ to all those who have offered their services. Again the membership have really supported the idea of NABAS exhibiting at the NEC Wedding Show in October. This is an opportunity to show brides just how effective balloon decor can be and a way of promoting members in their area. The Committee are always open to suggestions and ideas – please let us know your thoughts. Regards, Ada Elliott, Chairman

Paul Bloomer – Bloomers Balloons We began trading as PerfectParty4U in 2003, a home-based, bouncy castle business partnership. Regularly asked “do we do balloons?” I visited a wholesaler when David Grist & Ian Herd were demonstrating and was hooked. David advised we join NABAS and attend the Workshops & Design & Portfolio Day – I've never looked back. Without NABAS, I wouldn't be trading today. I'm not a teacher or award winner, I'm a

NABAS Committee Elections 2011

Peter Smith - Folkdean My name is Peter Smith and I run Folkdean Ltd., who are latex and foil balloon printers. I set up the company in 1980 so have seen quite a few changes in the industry. I have been a NABAS member for many years and previously served on the committee in 1992. I feel strongly that the balloon industry should be represented by a truly independent,

John Lee - Bloonoccasions I, along with my partner Jane, got into the balloon industry purely from a vacation trip to the USA. After seeing what an incredible impact that could be created with balloons, we decided this would be an amazing industry to be involved in. I count myself fortunate to have worked with a man named Roger Saunders whose vision was to create a decorators association, ie NABAS, and

Paul Widdowson – Event Planners I have owned my own balloon & party shop for just over 4 years which was purchased on the back of running my own entertainment business for 12 years, at the time providing everything from Bouncy Castles to DJ’s. My background is from the Supermarket industry, so I understand the ‘One stop shop’ industry very well and I believe it can work in our business also. On top of wedding favours, balloons & party items the shop sold already, I have added items like large Martini glasses, chair covers , wedding cakes etc. I believe that networking is one of the best ways to promote the business alongside customer

constantly improving balloon decorator and retailer and neither is easy even with support and training. I am currently the guy behind the NABAS Facebook and Website updates & I'm standing for committee as I want to give something back to the association that got me started and kept me going when everything else fell apart – NABAS - Inform, Educate & Support. This is our association; let me give you a voice on the committee.

non profit making organisation and NABAS fits that bill. I hope that in serving on the committee I will be able to help NABAS to maintain its current position as the best balloon industry representatives. I also hope that in addition to offering training, we can work on increasing other NABAS membership benefits, so that all sections of the industry will feel that it is well worth joining.

helped to build the association in its infancy. For the next twenty three years Jane and I built a very profitable decorating business and formed the first dedicated training academy in balloon artistry. I feel that to serve effectively on a committee, you need both the time and dedication to its needs. I now feel I have that time and dedication required in helping to take NABAS forward as the leading body representing the balloon decorating industry here in the U.K.

recommendation and I am a member of Business Network International (BNI) and on the Board of Surrey Chambers of Commerce. Therefore I believe that I can bring good business acumen to the Committee and promote ways in which members can save money, in these constrained economic times where our industry is one of the first to be impacted. I am 54 and have been happily divorced for many years, live in Sandhurst (Berks), with the shop just outside Woking (Surrey). I enjoy travelling, when I can, socialising and, dare I say it, have become a bit of a Facebook & Twitter addict! However I am putting these social media tools to good use in helping to grow & move the business forward.

Your committee for the following year is therefore as follows (in alphabetical order):

If you have an issue or idea that you would like to put to the committee for discussion then please let us know at the NABAS office – contact details on page 3.

Just to remind all members that NABAS is a participant in the Yellow Pages Corporate Advertising Scheme. If you wish to appear in the Corporate advert box then you need to make this clear to the Yellow Pages sales reps when they contact you. You can advertise in your local Yellow Pages within the Corporate Advertising Scheme under any of the following classifications: • “Balloons – Party/Promotional” • “Party Goods” • “Weddings – Flowers & Other Decorations” Members who wish to participate under the NABAS heading would receive the benefit of appearing in a display advert but would only pay lineage rates for their entry (rates vary from directory to directory). An example of the Corporate advert box is opposite.

NABAS MEMBER interview: Rachel Simonetti

6

Business Name: Create the Scene Owner: Rachel Simonetti Location & area covered: Leicestershire, covers the East Midlands and Warwickshire but will also travel, last year we decorated for clients in Leeds, Manchester and Northampton and Lincolnshire. What was your career path to where you are today?: I started out working for a small marquee company where I quickly learnt that customer service was key. I also worked out in the field erecting our marquees (I had muscles then!) for our private and corporate clients and loved the

client interaction. I then changed direction and became a manager at a business travel agency managing their conference business and dealing with people on all levels, negotiating for large accounts with hotel conference venues. In the meantime I was introduced to balloons and their huge decorating potential and booked myself onto balloon decorating courses. This was over 15 years ago now. What started off as a ‘bit of a hobby’ soon grew into a business and I managed the business on a part time basis for many years eventually relinquishing my managerial job to focus on the balloons. Eventually I decided that I could go no further with the business I had managed for so long, it was time to use my experience and skills to create my own Company. I have since been able to broaden my business and offer a full bespoke decorating service with balloon décor still a prominent service along side a high quality chair cover hire service as well as table centrepieces, topiary trees, linen hire and even a gorgeous VIP red carpet. Name something in the balloon industry that you most like: Customer faces when they walk into a room you’ve just decorated and they light up. I like to deliver the WOW factor. Name something in the balloon industry that you least like: Balloon Artists selling their décor too cheaply which devalues the industry and its products.

7

Best thing about your job?: It has to be the satisfaction of a happy client. What best describes your business? I am an event decorator so Create the Scene is an event decorating and venue dressing company How did you decide on your business name?: I wanted something that described the different elements of décor I offered and how this reflected on our finished work.

1

What advertising works for you? : The best advert is word of mouth. Do you show at Wedding Fairs? Other?: Yes, many! It’s my shop front :)??

2

Does your business vehicle promote you?: I have recently invested in a van and am currently designing the sign writing. Do you have an online presence?: Yes! My website is constantly updated where possible, it’s great for communicating to potential clients your services and telling them where they can see me exhibit. I think having a good website to promote your business has become very important. Do you feel your website is working for you?: Oh yes How would you like your business to grow in the next few years?: Whilst decorating weddings has really been my specialist area, I’ll be more focused on corporate business over the next year or so. How is the ‘credit crunch’ affecting you?: Hard to say as I started my business in the credit crunch, which I think has made for a stronger business. What tip would you offer someone new to the business?: Learn lots, especially about running a business, make sure you price yourself properly. How do you relax after a hard day’s work?: Glass of wine and a lovely long soak in the bath.

6

Form a round bubble at the end of this tail

7 Use the uninflated bit to twist into opposite joint

TWISTING BASICS - A Simple Hat

How do you decide what product to buy in?: Its a mixture of things, like looking at the market, checking its quality lives up to Create the Scene standard and I guess most importantly, if I like it!

The Environment - why it matters! NABAS leads the way on environmental issues within the balloon and party industry.

NEWS and EVENTS

Nowadays the environment is a topic constantly mentioned in the news and protecting our environment is of concern to everyone. Before placing orders many government departments, local authorities and other organisations are asking companies for a copy of their ‘Environmental Policy Statement’. After consultation with various statutory bodies NABAS has prepared an ‘Environmental Policy Statement’ which is available to members [ask the NABAS office for details]. NABAS is currently working with the British Assessment Bureau towards membership certification to ISO 14001 Management Standards for the Balloon and Party Industry. This is an internationally recognised environmental management standard. We see this partnership as a sign of intent to show that the balloon and party industry take their environmental impact seriously and want to do something about it. We also recognise that our members need to start proving their environmental credentials to their clients and, by becoming

ISO 14001 certified they will be on the front foot. There have in the past been some very unfair - and unsubstantiated - comments both in the media and from conservation groups about the environmental impact of balloons, particularly foil balloons. This problem has not been helped by the inappropriate use of foil balloons by advertising agencies and marketing promotion companies. Many of our members now find that their local council have imposed an all out ban on balloons. Unfortunately outside of the industry people do not differentiate between latex and foil balloons and this adds to the problem. We need to confront these criticisms head on and to this end approaches have been made to the Marine Conservation Society to provide detailed evidence to support the claims being made. NABAS has also approached various MPs with a view to getting a Private Members Bill through the House which will set out in detail how balloons, (particularly foil balloons) are used in outside situations. As NABAS members we all try to run our businesses in a responsible manner and we need to ensure public recognition of the standards we maintain.

One NABAS member’s take on the Royal Wedding! April 2011, and Royal Wedding fever hits Britain. Not just any royal wedding, this was a future king getting married. Were we just going to sit and spend the day watching it? Or could we celebrate it in style, whilst perhaps also getting a bit of free publicity... We’re known for our unique range of Character Greeters, and we enjoy thinking up interesting promotional ideas to get them to a wider audience. Jump on the ‘Kate and Wills’ brand-wagon? It just had to be done. Many hours were spent trying to work out, and in some instances second-guess, what the individual family members would wear. And we had to take liberties! We knew that the Queen would not be wearing a crown, but it’s such a lovely thing to model. She would probably complain about the length of the dress that we gave her, but we

did actually add length to it for the BBC Midlands bit of filming. Having taken lots of photographs at the Birmingham Council House (we wanted the photoshoot to be somewhere grand, to echo ‘Buck House’) with the kind permission of their civic catering staff, we emailed out a Press Release to newspapers national and local, magazines and TV and Radio press offices. We got a number of

responses, culminating with the balloon Royal Family being filmed by the BBC. Was all the effort worthwhile? Yes, certainly. I wouldn’t see myself as tellygenic, but our business got a few moments of fame, and I’ve have had a number of people tell me that they saw me and my own take on ‘The Wedding’.
