FROM YOUR COMMITTEE

BALLOONIES EDUCATE - PROMOTE - INFORM

Dear Member

As this is my first Balloonies intro as NABAS Chairman I thought I would give you a brief overview of how I came to be in the balloon industry. I, along with my partner Jane, got into the balloon industry many years ago purely from a vacation trip to the USA. After seeing what an incredible impact that could be created with balloons, we decided this would be an amazing industry to be involved in. I count myself fortunate to have worked with a man named Roger Saunders whose vision it was to create a decorators association, ie NABAS, and helped to build it in its infancy. For the next 24 years Jane and I built a very profitable decorating business and formed the first dedicated training academy in balloon artistry. I feel honoured to have been elected by the committee to serve as your Chairman to take NABAS forward as the leading body representing the balloon decorating and party industry here in the UK. 2012 looks set to be a great patriotic year for the UK with the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee and the Summer Olympics – so make sure you have plenty of everything red, white and blue. Best wishes for a prosperous year ahead. John Lee, NABAS Chairman

NABAS members have been doing some amazing jobs - just take a look over the following two pages. If you have something that you want to share then do let the NABAS office know - info@nabas.co.uk - what better way to promote your work to show future clients than an article in your industry association's magazine.

Ethnic Wedding NABAS member Gill Smith of Those Finishing Touches joined up with her local florist, Bloomin Lovelys (also a NABAS member) to provide the dĂŠcor for her first Muslim Wedding. Gillian employed four casual staff over 4 days (2 for preparation, 2 for decorating) for the event. Gillian found the experience mind blowing and found that it took a lot of organisational skills and required a good understanding of cultural requirements.

4ft Balloons Here’s a job we did involving helium filled 4ft balloons. It’s tricky to price a job that involves large balloons as it’s difficult to calculate the amount of helium required. I looked at the cubic capacity of a 4ft balloon and compared this with the BOC helium chart – so I calculated an L size should inflate 9 x 4ft balloons……. Then I added 50% extra helium for luck. The client required the 4ft balloons to support fake computers. I’d given the lift capacity of a 4ft and these fake computers were made to a certain weight. We inflated a balloon to 4ft and attached it to one of t h e c o m p u t e r s …… I t d i d n ’ t li f t i t ! Lucky these 4ft balloons seemed to be more like 6ft, so we untied it and inflated it to 5ft (good job I had applied my 50% extra rule). The balloon lifted the computer and still had plenty of give for more gas if required. We also completed a ceiling fill. There were 2 rooms involved and we decorated the second room with 16″ balloons attached to 500lb line (these IT guys don’t like ribbon)!! We had a 3 hour window to complete this between 6am to 9am, we finished at 8.10am. The location was awesome, next to Clarence House. David Saker Balloons.com

In its 5th year the exhibition deals again with balloons in artificial environments. From regular forms to bizarre cuts, Installations 2010 – 2011 is a nicely installed unique collection of captivating images offering a fascinating look into the relationships between these artificial environments and the exploration of more abstracted forms. While you might expect photographs to be recording of balloons as they are many of the images will show amazing changes of recognition done by unusual perspectives. The viewer seamlessly becomes part of this world as the artistic project enhances the mysterious ambience and fascination of balloons. All photographs were first time exhibited at the 12th Moscow Balloon Festival at the end of September 2011. Details, details New employers’ liability legislation coming into force on 1 April 2012 requires business owners to update their details with their insurer. Not doing so could render their EL polices null and void. The following advice explaining what it means and what you need to do has been obtained from Hiscox by Steve Parish of Jelf Clarke Roxburgh.

What is the Employers’ Liability Tracing Office (ELTO)? The insurance industry has formed an independent body called the Employers’ Liability Tracing Office (ELTO) to help potential claimants find their employers’ liability (EL) insurer, if they have suffered injury or disease. The Financial Services Authority (FSA) has subsequently published new regulations which reinforce the need to improve the tracing of EL insurance policies. By collating information on EL insurance policies on a central database, ELTO will improve the effectiveness of finding the correct EL insurer.

How does this affect you as an employer? What this now means is that your EL insurer needs to capture some additional information from you. The information is mandatory and without it, they won’t be able to insure you for EL.

What do you need to supply your insurer? All employers are given a unique Employer Reference Number (ERN) by HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) when they register as an employer. This reference is sometimes also referred to as the Employers PAYE reference. It usually takes the form of a three -digit HMRC office number followed by a reference number unique to your business. It appears on most correspondence you receive from HMRC (including your welcome pack from them) and is also used on any P60s and P45s that are issued to your employees. Your insurer will ask you for full details including registered address and ERN of any subsidiary companies or other employers covered by your employers’ liability policy. The ERN has been chosen as it is the most appropriate unique identifier for employers. Please note your insurer will only use your ERN information for the ELTO database.

How should you supply this information to your insurer? The easiest way to ensure you supply the right information is by contacting your insurance broker – they will understand your circumstances and can advise what information you need to provide. All insurers are required by the new FSA regulations to collate the above data which will help make the traces undertaken by ELTO more effective, so all businesses with employers’ liability cover are being urged to cooperate.

More information For more information on the ELTO, you can visit their website www.elto.org.uk. If you have any questions or need some assistance with finding or identifying your ERN, contact your insurance broker. Steve Parish, Jelf Clarke Roxburgh 01989 564696

! About FACE ! What is it about FACE that makes it so special, are we better than any other face painters NO are we better than any one else in our field NO. Then who are we, well let’s see if I can tell you about who we are and what we are trying to do. FACE is the home of the Face Painting Association, an organisation created to improve standards and raise the profile of face painting. The Face Painting Association was formed in 1995 so that like minded people could get together and share ideas. Members of FACE have to pass a certification test in order to join, this is to ensure that all FACE Members have reached a set standard that clients would appreciate. Improvements such as help and guidance for those just starting out and support for those who have been painting for awhile. FACE members also get the opportunity to work together, we share ideas, designs and tips with each other, this allows us to form friendships and be inspired by each others designs and working methods, we do this at our paint jams and at the Annual Conference. Yes we have a set of rules and yes we like those who have joined our association to follow them. Having said all that it is up to the individual painter to strive to become better to improve and to help those who want to improve. Is it so much to ask that painters such as those that belong to FACE and those who are thinking about joining, would want a professional body an association to improve standards in our wonderful industry. Mark Gannon, FACE

“Maaaaaaam! Pleeeeease can I have my face painted! Please!” A familiar phrase heard throughout the sunny months on any weekend at every school fete, country fair, party, county show, birthday party, wedding or christening. But how often have you then heard from the parent afterwards, “What are you meant to be? What is that?!” The International Face Painting Association - FACE - was set up to by a group of Face Painters to address such a situation. The original members wanted to introduce a quality standard and to encourage professionalism in all areas of the industry. We would like the public to start to notice the difference between a parent ushered in to the school fair, given a book, a brush and some paints and left to it and a professional painter with many years of practise and training producing some beautiful and skillful artwork. FACE introduced a timed accreditation test to prove the quality and speed of the painters work and also to show their handling of children. We encourage painters to use tried, tested and safe materials and to follow the Code of Practice regarding health and hygiene etc and also the Code of Conduct. This entry test gives them a Level 1 membership. After 2 or more years, artists are encouraged to try to achieve a Level 2 Certificate to show how their skill has improved. The applicants work is judged on technical skill, originality and the overall impression. FACE also aims to encourage on-going skill development and sharing of ideas through frequent meetings, or Jam sessions, to learn from and support each other. Each region of the country has its own Representative who keeps in contact and supports the painters in their area. . A number of FACE members from all around the country conduct training classes from beginners up to advanced levels. FACE holds an annual weekend Conference which combines demonstrations, lessons and competitions with fun, partying, making and renewing friendships. Many traders attend selling paints, brushes, glitter and other paraphernalia. We never forget the all important role of face painting – which is to make children smile! So if we are having fun with a smile on our faces, then we hope that infectious joy can be passed to the children too! However, children are more discerning than one thinks – they are now experienced in seeing the difference between a professional painter and a one-time volunteer! FACE wants to lift the level and raise the standard to support and promote face painting as a serious profession and make the public aware of our aims. Recipe Tulip Created by Chris Horne, Amscan International Ltd

Perfect for Spring, this elegant design can be created in many colours for a fresh, new look! Product Required: 4 x 36” Anagram Decorator Curves, your choice of colour 4 x 28” Anagram Decorator Curves, to match or contrast with above 4 x 15” Anagram Decorator Curves, Lime (1639299) or Green (1669499) 2 x 19” Anagram Decorator Curves, Lime (1639399) or Green (1669599) 1 x Green Foil Weight (991365-03) Self-adhesive hook and loop tape Small Cable / zip ties

Estimated Labour time: 15 minutes. To comply with California Law, the entire design can be air-filled and suspended from above using monofilament line. Alternatively the flower can be air filled and mounted independently on a pole and base covered with green fabric, with the leaves added for detail. * For a larger Tulip, increase all balloon sizes to the next size up in the range.

Construction Method: 1. Inflate all the 15” curves with air and heat seal. 2. Inflate all of the 36” and the four matching 28”curves with helium. 3. Gather the tails of all 8 helium filled curves, plus one of the air-filled 15” curves together and secure with a cable / zip tie. 4. Create the stem of the Tulip by adding the remaining 15” curves one below the other in a chain, securing with cable / zip ties. Add the weight at the bottom to anchor. 5. Arrange the 4 large helium filled curves to form the tulip shape, and hold in place with small pieces of hook and loop tape. 6. Arrange the 4 small helium filled curves between the larger ones (see photograph for reference) and secure in place with small pieces of hook and loop tape. 7. Tuck any visible tails up between the balloons to hide them. 8. Finally, inflate the remaining 19” Lime or Green curves with air, tape up the tails, and secure to the stem in your desired position with small pieces of hook and loop tape.
