FROM YOUR COMMITTEE

BALLOONIES EDUCATE - PROMOTE - INFORM

Hello And A Very Warm Welcome From Your Committee & Back Office John in his wisdom has allowed me to write this month's intro to Balloonies, and as it's the last edition in 2014, it's the perfect time to tell you what we've done in 2014 and more importantly what we will be doing in 2015. Firstly, let's talk about NABAS and reiterate who we are as an organisation, in the hope of helping us all understand our unique status, and why we are members. We are a group made up of some 450 businesses. We are owned by ALL the members and we are here to support ALL the members. Whatever profits we make stay within NABAS for NABAS members. We have no ulterior motives other than promote our industry and our respective businesses. We are not answerable to any manufacturer, wholesaler or individual. We have a committee, and I'll be totally honest with you and say it isn't perfect, and there is certainly room for improvement, but it's all we've got at the moment and with the help of Kate and Hilary, we are trying to make the best of what we have, BUT this is YOUR organisation.

In 2015, we really need to see some of you helping us shape our future and join the committee. We can't make the changes you want without your involvement. So start talking to us now about becoming a committee member in 2015. Remember, this is your organisation so become an active part in shaping both YOUR and NABAS's future. So, what did some of us do in 2014? Well, I came up with the strap line "NABAS, Helping You Take Your Business To A Higher Level", which I thought was quite brilliant, so that was me done for the year... we had a couple of meetings, our first Skype call (that's progress for you) and an absolute tonne of emails. Through this, we have created your new LOGO, almost completed the new website which will be live in early 2015, arranged training courses around the country, upset each other in some form or another, lost our Vice Chairman and two other committee members, negotiated rates for our AMAZING 2015 NABAS SHOW at Knebworth, answered numerous questions from fellow members, and did I mention my creation of the strap line "Helping You Take Your Business To A Higher Level"? Not bad for a bunch of unpaid part timers, but certainly nothing to get over complacent about! At this point, I really need to take a moment to acknowledge Hilary and Kate's involvement and support in all of this, as without them very little would have been achieved. So what do we have in store for 2015? Our first outing will be at the NEC for Spring Fair from 1st - 5th February. We will be in Hall 3 and are delighted to be sharing a stand with North Star Balloons. For free tickets simply go to www.springfair.com. During each of the 5 days, our stand will be manned (or wo-manned) by a committee member, and/or Hilary and Kate, so please drop by and say hello.

FROM YOUR COMMITTEE, cont…... Our next BIG Date in 2015 is our NABAS EXTRAVAGANZA SHOW on 1st-2nd March at Knebworth House. I would need the rest of Balloonies to write about why you have to be there! We have some excellent trainers, and I can't tell you how thrilled I am to tell you Chris Horne is one of the teachers over our two day show; and if that wasn't enough we have Matthew Lewis and Mitch Gilbert, all highly knowledgeable and respected teachers and award winning decorators. You will also get the chance of attending Graham Lee's Balloon Twisting Class and Guido Verhoef's Link-o-Loon class. You can even learn how to Face Paint with Liz Bylett! We've put an amazing package together for you, and the entire weekend is yours for an unbelievable £399! This includes: All your classes over the two days, morning refreshments, lunch, afternoon tea, coffee and cakes, Evening Meal, AN EVENING PARTY!!, your overnight Accommodation at the 4 Star Novotel, and a mini Exhibition on Monday! All this for ONLY £399. To put this into perspective, I was recently invited to a weekend seminar at Downton Abbey ( Highclere Castle in Hampshire) at a cost of £5,000 (YES FIVE THOUSAND POUNDS) and if I wanted to invite my partner for afternoon drinks I could do so for an additional £295. NO FOOD, NO PARTY and ACCOMMODATION WAS EXTRA!

Kirsten Tuddenham of Create & Cherish Events incorp. Createaparty UK & Cherish Wedding Services created this arch using the Aeropole system. Kirsten said “I felt so much more comfortable leaving this arch than any I've made myself in the past and visually the arch was a perfect shape. It took us all of 30 mins on site putting this together. Loved using it and can't wait to use it again.. A Christmas Stage from Candy Nichols, Balloon Express (Wessex)

The stunningly beautiful Empress Ballroom in Blackpool’s Winter Gardens was the backdrop for this year’s NHS Trust Celebrating Success Awards. We had been approached by Victoria, a venue dresser, who was providing candelabras for half of the tables, she had seen these balloons and asked for our help. With such a high ceiling we knew we could really add impact to the event with the giant 30” pearlised white latex balloons, on a simple organza column and weight. We’d read about the Conwin 60/40 helium/air valve for filling larger latex balloons and with a little help and advice from a QBN member forum we invested in this fabulous piece of equipment. With the recent helium shortages, we loved the fact that the 30 giant balloons used only a fraction of usual amount needed and they still floated for days. With two of us working on site in this Victorian splendour, we soon got into a routine and both felt truly inspired to see the end results. The balloons were three metres high off the tables and with the coloured lights around the room they created a magical effect of changing colours throughout the evening. We received brilliant praise from both the Winter Garden’s staff and the NHS staff and have to say being in the room and hearing “WOW” when a new person walked in, really reminded us of why we love this job. COMMITTEE UPDATES NEW NABAS LOGO As detailed in the last issue of Balloonies, as part of the rebranding of NABAS and helping to take NABAS forward, the NABAS logo has been re-designed to incorporate 'Party Professionals' into our association. The logo has been refreshed, to give NABAS a new modern look, whilst keeping the important word 'Balloon'. Please use this logo as and when you need to update/renew/replace anything that currently displays the old logo. A jpg of the logo was emailed to all members at the end of October - if you need it re-sent please contact the NABAS office - info@nabas.co.uk

NEW NABAS WEBSITE The committee is investing in a new website which is currently being designed and created and should be ready to launch early 2015. New features will include members being able to contact each other privately (a bit like sending private messages on Facebook); recipes/ how-to- guides; more user friendly.

COUNTERFEIT IMPORTED BALLOONS NABAS has reacted to these issues at grass roots level. This is a continuing problem so please be vigilant and report any offending suppliers/street vendors to your local Trading Standards office
