HANK YOU for welcoming me so warmly to
Canada’s National Arts Centre. After years of guest conducting in Ottawa, I was thrilled to have the opportunity to become part of the community, as Music Director of the National Arts Centre Orchestra. While I knew it would be a great artistic experience, I was still amazed at how meaningful our performances together were and how much your presence in the audience shaped the music. It’s this symbiotic relationship that influenced our programming of the 2016/17 season. We have a superb line up of world-class performers, including Joshua Bell, Angela Hewitt, and Russell Braun. Together we’ll explore the works of the masters—like Mozart, Schumann, and Beethoven—to hear beautiful music and to understand how deeply influenced they were by one another and the world around them. A great audience is a prerequisite for artistic genius. It is in that spirit that we’ll offer you groundbreaking
new works. I’m particularly excited about the guitar concerto by composer Howard Shore for Milo Karadagli and our production of Louis Riel with the Canadian Opera Company. I could not have asked for a more phenomenal group of musicians with which to make music than the NAC Orchestra, nor a more embracing community with which to create it. I hope you will continue the journey with us in 2016/17.
Sincerely,
Alexander Shelley MUSIC DIRECTOR NATIONAL ARTS CENTRE ORCHESTRA
