COR for Kindergarten is based on the most important indicators of school readiness and future school success.
COR for Kindergarten combines KER and OR into one robust online assessment tool that drives strong outcomes. The KER is an observation-based assessment that measures what a child knows and can do at kindergarten entry across five domains, and the OR measures the same five domains with additional items proven to best prepare children for school success:
Literacy and Language
Approaches to Learning
Mathematics Emotional and Social Development
Health and Physical Development
COR’s suite of reports helps teachers easily review progress at the child and classroom level — strengthening intentional teaching, building learner-focused daily plans, and delivering better child outcomes.
HighScope is the thought leader in early childhood because our focus is on educators. COR for Kindergarten, powered by HighScope is dependable and backed by 50+ years of early childhood research that still guides best practices and policy today.

This special four-day journey is packed with opportunities for growth, connection, and inspiration. With more than 200 carefully curated sessions, we aim to cover the breadth and depth of what it means to nurture, educate, and advocate for our youngest learners. But the connections don’t end with the app. We encourage you to step out, meet new faces, and knit closer ties with peers from across the country. There’s immense power in our community and coming together in this way is a powerful reminder of the collective strength that supports us.
On behalf of NAEYC’s governing board and staff, we extend our deepest gratitude for dedicating your time to join us and for your unwavering commitment to personal and professional growth. The impact you have on children, families, and the field of early childhood education is profound and far-reaching.
We wish you an extraordinary and memorable experience. Share your journey, insights, and the moments that inspire you on the conference app and across social media platforms using the hashtag #naeycINST. And while you’re here, take the opportunity to explore the charm, culture, distinctive music, historical sites and cuisine of New Orleans.

Now is the Time for Future Thinking
New Orleans Ernest N. Morial Convention Center, New Orleans Theater 10:30 AM – 12:00 PM
Trista Harris, Philanthropic Futurist and President, FutureGood Consulting
NAEYC is nearing its 100th anniversary. Such a significant milestone can inspire people to look back and reflect on accomplishments, challenges, and lessons learned. But we can’t stop there. Now is also the time to look forward.
Faced with a global health pandemic and racial reckoning, the world has shifted. Long-held policies, social norms, and practices that were once thought of as immovable have changed. We learned new ways to collaborate across sectors and harness our energy to meet emerging community needs.
How do we take that same spirit of change into the future? How do we help ensure that our communities aren’t left behind?
The 2024 Professional Learning Institute Opening Plenary Session will kick off 3 ½ dynamic days aimed to help you build and nurture a caring community of learners. NAEYC leaders will celebrate past successes as they look forward to what the future holds. Our keynote speaker is well equipped to address this: as a renowned philanthropic
Shuttle Bus Transportation to Opening Plenary Session
futurist, Trista Harris analyzes current trends and forecasts how we can build the future we want to see for ourselves, our sectors, and our communities.
Trista Harris advocates for the use of futurism to address critical community challenges worldwide. Her groundbreaking work has been featured in Forbes, CNN, the New York Times, the Chronicle of Philanthropy, and many social sector blogs. Trista is the president of FutureGood, a consultancy that helps visionaries create a better future. She has authored two books, How to Become a Nonprofit Rockstar and Future Good. Trista is a strategic foresight expert certified by Oxford University. She holds a Master of Public Policy degree from the Humphrey School of Public Affairs at the University of Minnesota and a Bachelor of Arts from Howard University.

This session will introduce participants to the CEC/DEC EI/ECSE Standards and how they may use these standards as a framework for personnel preparation, including both preservice and ongoing professional development. We will share resources to support the use of the EI/ECSE Standards and engage participants in dialogue related to the implementation of the EI/ECSE Standards within their personnel preparation programs and for ongoing professional development. Of particular interest in this session will be the exploration and discussion of the relationship between the ECE Standards and Competencies and the EI/ECSE Standards. Participants will have time to reflect on how the use of these resources will benefit their own preservice personnel preparation and/or ongoing professional development programs.

Using Guidance to Teach Young Children to Gain Five Democratic Life Skills
St. James Ballroom
8:00 AM – 10:00 AM
Dan Gartrell, Bemidji State University, Minnesota
To be healthy, socially minded, creative human beings and democratic citizens, children need the Five Democratic Life Skills:
1. Finding acceptance as a member of the group and as a worthy individual.
2. Expressing strong emotions in non-hurting ways.
3. Solving problems creatively, independently, and in cooperation with others.
4. Accepting differing human qualities in others.
5. Thinking intelligently and ethically.
Learn how early childhood professionals can use developmental and intervention guidance practices to create encouraging learning communities and to teach young children these skills. This session builds upon the guidance premise that individuals must gain basic emotional health before they can make healthy progress in the other domains. Through video and anecdotal illustrations, it invites discussion about how early childhood educators build secure relationships with every member of the community and use guidance to teach for the Five Democratic Life Skills.

Project Zero from Harvard University defines playful learning as joyful and empowering, with opportunities for pursuits of curiosity. Storytelling/ Storyacting, created and popularized by Vivian Gussin Paley, allows children to dictate their stories, then perform them in front of the class. It is a powerful tool to deepen learning for children through play. Participants will dive deep into this routine and learn other elements that create humanizing learning environments. With frequent use and rumination about these routines, teachers deepen their practice by reflecting, facilitating critical thinking conversations among children, and providing different entry points in response to children’s strengths and needs. Teachers see their students as children are: brilliant, excited, and full of genius and wonder as they engage in these routines. Through shared community and knowledge building, teachers get to know their children deeply due to the nature of the routines. This mutuality creates an equitable and caring learning community.

To Protect and Nurture: (Re)Imagining Mentoring for Black Boys in the Early Grades
St. James Ballroom
8:00 AM – 10:00 AM
Brian L. Wright, The University of Memphis
Black boyhood in the United States has been essentially rendered unimaginable. In public discourse, deficit-oriented rhetoric often adultifies, criminalizes, and dehumanizes Black boys, making it difficult for our society to view them as children worthy of a childhood. Mentoring programs embedded within learning environments have become increasingly popular to ameliorate the risks and harms associated with racism and poverty for Black boys and to aid school professionals in seeing them with all the potential, promise, and possibilities afforded to other children. However, the view that mentoring programs are inherently beneficial impairs our ability to see how aspects of them may harm Black boys. During this presentation, participants will examine a set of principles used in mentoring programs for Black boys in the early grades (pre-K–3) and assess how they either “protect” and “nurture” Black boys in caring and equitable ways or further “adultify” them within schools and communities.

In this session, participants will discover the affordances of repeated instructional routines to build equitable, developmentally appropriate, and strengths-based classroom assessment practices. Participants will learn how to empower educators in seamlessly integrating playful instructional routines that effectively merge teaching and assessment strategies. Participants will explore practical methods for embedding assessment seamlessly within instructional routines and identify key moments within lessons to collect formative data, enabling real-time adjustments to enhance teaching effectiveness. Through video analysis of teacher practice, participants will gather and interpret data to then support teachers in making instructional decisions that meet the cultural, linguistic, and developmental needs of their students. Participants will name, acknowledge, and reveal how implicit bias impacts educators’ instructional decisions and gain tools to address and mitigate implicit bias in observational assessment.

Play-based learning is developmentally appropriate, and children participating in quality play-based programs demonstrate long-term learning outcomes. Yet a disconnect exists between quality classroom environments and what is labeled “real learning.” How do we use what we know about developmentally appropriate practice (DAP) to set up and sustain rigorous academic learning in play-based programs? How do we communicate to others the value of investing in quality early childhood education programs? Participants in this session will define core values of early care and education, articulate how DAP meets those values, and collaborate with colleagues to develop points of action they can apply in their current areas of practice to better exhibit the benefits of learning in play-based settings.
