Dear Friends, It is time to network, learn and let your voice be heard as we gather together in Washington, DC this November. We hope you’ll join us at the 2018 Annual Conference for an event you won’t want to miss. This year’s conference will inspire, empower, and motivate you to take action and make a difference in the lives of our youngest children. We have planned another year of thought-provoking sessions, exciting events, expo and shop activities and more. At the end of the conference you’ll be ready to hit the ground running to provide quality early learning. I’m excited to announce that this year’s keynote presentation will highlight the life and legacy of Fred Rogers and his groundbreaking television show. This session will feature clips from the critically acclaimed film about Rogers’ career as a children’s television pioneer, and a panel discussion with the film’s producers, including Fred’s wife, Joanne Rogers. Rhian Evans Allvin Chief Executive Officer

If you’re arriving to Annual Conference early, don’t forget to sign up for our Pre-Conference workshops, and plan to experience the exciting attractions in the Nation’s Capital. Attending Annual Conference is your opportunity to speak out for your profession, the young children, families and communities that you serve. Tuesday, November 13 8:30 a.m.–4:00 p.m. NAEYC’s Early Learning Programs Accreditation Updated Process NAEYC Accreditation of Early Learning Programs has developed a new process and method for achieving and maintaining accreditation. While the heart, integrity and rigor of the accreditation system has remained the same, the 4-step process has undergone a major change in response to the challenges and burdens programs face in achieving accreditation. This workshop will unpack those challenges and burdens, provide an in-depth look at the new assessment items, describe important changes to Standard 6, and review streamlined enrollment, application and candidacy processes. Please note that this process is required for ALL programs beginning with the May 31, 2018 candidacy and renewal cycles.

Connecting Strengths-Based Powerful Interactions to Teaching and Learning

A Workshop for Higher Education Faculty

by Judy Jablon, Diana Courson, and Nichole Parks

This full-day workshop is designed for higher education faculty who are engaged in the NAEYC Accreditation of Early Childhood Higher Education Program Accreditation (please note, this workshop is not applicable to those pursuing NAEYC SPA Recognition as part of CAEP Accreditation). This workshop will focus on the NAEYC Professional Preparation standards; evaluating sample key assessments, rubrics, and data charts; and using student performance data to improve programs. It will be especially helpful for those who are writing self-study reports, meeting annual reporting requirements, or responding to conditions.

We will examine how the three steps of a Powerful Interaction serve as the frame in which a coach individualizes interactions that reflect the personal style and the unique strengths, interests and needs of the person you are coaching. We will explore the five principles of a Powerful Interactions stance and participants will practice strategies for using Powerful Interactions with adults. Breakfast, lunch, and a copy of Coaching with Powerful Interactions: A Guide for Partnering with Early Childhood Teachers are included in the price of the workshop.

*Note: Annual Conference Registration is not included in the workshop fee.

You must register in advance; on-site registration will not be available. Go to naeyc.org/events/ annual/2018/preconference-workshops to register and for more information.

Making, Tinkering, and Engineering in Early Childhood

by Pam Brillante

Special Free Workshop (space limited)

by Cate Heroman Embrace a mindset for making and tinkering through engaging, playful experiences. Together we’ll investigate how tinkering and making experiences support fundamental STEM thinking and learning for young children. After this introduction to the fundamentals of tinkering, we’ll dive into NAEYC’s book, Making and Tinkering With STEM: Solving Design Challenges With Young Children. You’ll learn how tinkering, making, and engineering are related and how each has an important role in the early childhood setting. Breakfast, lunch, and a copy of the book are included in the price of the workshop.

The number of children with identified developmental delays and disabilities being included in general education classrooms and programs alongside their peers is increasing every year. Inclusion is a philosophy that best practices for young children are best practices for all young children, and every child is more alike than different. This workshop will explore NAEYC’s book The Essentials: Supporting Young Children with Disabilities in the Classroom and the proactive changes classroom teachers can make to their environments and their activities so that children with delays and disabilities can belong, learn, and be part of their communities. Breakfast, lunch, and a copy of the book are included in the price of the workshop.
