Delhi govt to build toilets in 700 slum clusters
NEW DELHI, OCT 5 (AGENCIES): Delhi government has decided to construct toilet blocks in 700 slum clusters after identifying the shortfall of lavatories in these settlements, an official said on Sunday. “The shortage of toilet blocks in Jhuggi Jhopdi (slum dwelling) clusters has made DUSIB take it as a mission to provide toilet blocks in all the 700 Jhuggi Jhopdi colonies,” Delhi Urban Slum Improvement Board (DUSIB) CEO Amar Nath said. The decision came close on the heels of the launch of Swachh Bharat Abhiyan by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on October 2. The mission aims at providing toilets to every family by 2019. “A data base has been prepared and the deficit has been identified. DUSIB is actively planning to implement this programme of providing toilet block in slums at the earliest,” he said. Besides, Nath said a massive cleanliness drive was carried out at 185 night shelters in various parts of the national capital. To monitor the cleanliness drive, a centralised control room and 11 teams of officers have been set up, he added.

by Pakistani troops along International Border (IB) in the past two months was possibly the “heaviest” since the 1971 war. On the anti-government protests led by opposition leader Imran Khan and firebrand cleric Tahirul Qadri, Musharraf said, “The present governance, political and elections system
in Pakistan have become redundant.” “I think it is now clear that all political parties have to sit together so that a consensus national government can be formed and fresh elections be held,” Musharraf, who heads All Pakistan Muslim League party said.
SRINAGAR, OCT 5 (PTI): A Kashmiri Pandit family braved all odds to stay back when militancy engulfed the Valley in 1990 but the devastating flood last month has forced to live them separately after losing everything including the roof over their heads. “I am putting up with a friend in Shalimar, my son and wife is at Aloochi Bagh with her friend’s family while I was forced to shift to my parents place in Delhi following the floods. We want to live together again but we have no roof over our head,” Arun Kumar Gaind told PTI. The Gainds, who chose not to migrate when militancy erupted in the Valley in 1990, own an electronic goods shop in commercial hub of Lal Chowk and Arun works as a technician in the state’s Power Development Department (PDD).
T.R Zeliang hopes NDA will induct... (From p-1) Q. Prohibition in Nagaland has really failed. Compared to Mizoram, Mizoram has lifted the total prohibition, don’t you think like by lifting maybe or does your government plan to follow the same footsteps as Mizoram? Ans: Yes/ No. it is not only revenue. Revenue collection will improve, but economy of the people is also affected because of this prohibition. But government cannot just decide like that, to lift the prohibition Act. That is how we have convened the Consultative Meet on 26th. We are inviting the NGO’s, Tribal Hohos, Naga Mother’s Association and even the church organizations also. So during this interfacing, if people desire that it should be lifted, then we will lift, wholly or partially. Depends on the outcome of the discussion. Q. Don’t you think, this prohibition has also spoiled many young people in Nagaland, most of them have turned into addicts or drug addicts? Ans: Yes, there are lots of side effects. Economically it has affected. Why because people are drinking, but they are not getting their drinks at the genuine price, they are paying double of what is in the market. So in one way, if
we open few liquor shops in Dimapur or Kohima, people will not buy anywhere, people will buy from the liquor shop, so that they will get genuine drinks, genuine price. Q. So you admit that Liquor is available in Nagaland despite this total prohibition? Ans: Yes, it is available everywhere. There is a report from the Excise department and report from the Church workers also. Anywhere it is available, only thing is we are paying more and we are not getting the genuine drinks. All are, see most of the drinks we get in the market are adulterated. That is what people say, that is why I am saying that it is not only government revenue collection, it is affecting the economy of the people. Q. Do you really think that the people of Nagaland now still support the idea of sovereignty? Ans: Today, today’s generation people think more about economic sovereignty, independence of the economy. We should be self sufficient that we should produce more than what we require, so that we can export our products also. So that is the main focus now that people have in their mindset. Q. There has been a lot of discontentment, people has

been raising issue against the government giving recognition to one of the Tribes. Ans: Rongmei tribe recognition. To my mind there is no confusion. Because Nagaland government notification clearly spells out that prior to 1963, who were in the State of Nagaland, before the creation of Statehood, they are indigenous. That is the notification issued by the government of Nagaland. So Rongmei, those who were here prior to 1963, their names were enumerated and it has come to 1313, these 1313 has been found as genuine indigenous citizen in Nagaland. So recognition given to them is only 1313. Whereas today, Rongmei population in Nagaland is more than 6000. But all these more than 6000 are not recognised. Only the names enumerated in the electoral roll of 1963 and their descendants, they were given recognition. So legally giving indigenous is a correct stand. And recognition of a Tribe is not given by the State gover nment. Rongmei as a tribe is recognised by the government of India. So there is no confusion, but there are some people who are trying to create confusion. But the stand of the government is very clear. We will go by the notification.
They lost everything in the deluge as their rented house in Jawahar Nagar collapsed due to ravaging flood while the goods in the shop were destroyed in Lal Chowk. A well-to-do family, before the natural calamity struck on September 7, Arun is now running from pillar to post to get some help from the Government so that he can reunite his family. “We had a close shave with death in the deluge as the three-storied rented accommodation collapsed minutes after we moved out of it to a neighbour’s concrete house,” he said. “I approached my department and the Estates Department as well for some accommodation but my case has been rejected on the basis that they don’t have enough room for Civil Secretariat employees,” the 37-year-old government employee said.
NSG to Observe 2014 as ‘Year of the Commando’ NEW DELHI, OCT 5 (PTI): National Security Guard has decided to improve the quality of lives of its personnel by declaring 2014 as the ‘year of the commando’ and undertaking a host of initiatives in this direction. Apart from providing the commandos the best of equipment and gadgets to combat terrorists and anti-nationals, the elite force has initiated measures to provide its men better living conditions and enhanced benefits of welfare schemes. “Our success in action greatly depends on our commandos at the front line. We therefore decided to dedicate 2014 as ‘the year of the commando’. The aim is to achieve significant improvements not just in counter-terrorist skills and capabilities of our personnel but also in the quality of their lives,” NSG chief J N Choudhury told PTI. Shift Jayalalithaa to Tamil Nadu: Gowda Bangalore , O C T 5 (AGENCIES): Former Prime Minister HD Deve Gowda on Saturday suggested that AIADMK supremo Jayalalithaa, lodged at Parappana Agrahara prison here after being convicted in an illegal assets case, be shifted to Tamil Nadu as it was a burden for the state to manage the large number of protestors and also maintain law and order. “I only appeal to the state government... Let the former chief minister (Jayalalithaa) be transferred to Tamil Nadu,” he told reporters. “...Every day a huge number of people are coming here and protesting, every day we have to manage them by deploying special police force, along with maintaining law and order here... Why should we take this burden?” “Whether bail is given or not, we have nothing to do with it. It is a judicial matter....Why do we want this?”

he asked. A special court here had on September 27 convicted Jayalalithaa and sentenced her to four years in prison, besides imposing a Rs 100 crore fine on her. Gowda also said the court was specially appointed for this case and cannot give
bail now. “Let them go and appeal in whichever court they want... What do we have do with it?” Jayalalithaa’s plea for immediate bail in the case and suspension of the fouryear sentence will come up in the Karnataka High Court on Oct 7.

puja committees that are to be blamed for the pollution. “All the registered puja committees use eco-friendly paints and materials in their idols. We too make sure to clean the ghats before and after the idols are immersed,” Banerjee told IANS. “We have to get clearances from the fire department, police, and MCD but the unorganized committees are popping all over the city every year and there’s no check on them. They are the ones who actually pollute the river the most,” he added. Environment health researcher Gopal Krishna agreed with Banerjee’s suggestion of streamlining the unorganized puja committees but added that political will was needed to strictly enforce laws to protect the environment that are already in place. “The rivers should not be used to immerse idols and religious material even if they are non-toxic and eco-friendly. But governments, afraid of hurting religious sentiments don’t enforce such guidelines that are already in place,” Krishna, who works with Toxic Watch told IANS.

He said that Indians, who once had a passion for buying American and Japanese products, would now get the best quality products produced at home itself as India would produce quality products and people around the globe would crave for ‘Made in India’ products.

boatman at the Kalindi Kunj river bank, one of the six spots where the authorities had permitted idol immersion, told IANS. “It’s the same story every year and people continue to immerse plastic and other non-toxic materials along with the idols in the river,” added Singh’s friend Devendra. As per estimates, at least 200 idols of goddess Durga are immersed in the Yamuna every year at Kalindi Kunj and at the other five spots -- Shyam Ghat, Hathi Ghat, Geeta Ghat and ghats near Geeta Colony, Mayur Vihar, where at least 760 registered idols are immersed. The Yamuna meets nearly 70 percent of Delhi’s water needs. Over the past two decades, nearly Rs. 1,500 crore was spent on cleaning it up. Despite that, however, the river continues to run polluted. According to Samrat Banerjee of Durgotsab, GK-II, all the organized puja committees in Delhi are registered with the two Joint Procession Committees (JPC) who in turn are responsible for cleaning the Geeta Ghat and Kalindi Kunj before and after the immersions. And it’s the unorganized

He also said that now foreign companies were showing eagerness to make India their manufacturing destination. On the frequent violations of ceasefire by Pakistan, the Union Minister said such incidents were unfortunate. He, however, said the previous UPA government believed in showing white flags to the enemy. “But we have deviated from that kind of policies,” he said, adding that “our government believes in giving befitting reply”. Kalayat constituency is witnessing a keen contest among four candidates, three of whom are Jats - Rampal Majra of the INLD, Ranveer Mann of the Congress and Independent Jai Prakash against a non-Jat Dharam Pal Sharma.

NEW DELHI, OCT 5 (IANS): Broken earthen pots, rotting flowers, tattered pieces of cloth and sodden coloured paper littered the banks of the Yamuna Sunday, a day after hundreds of idols of Goddess Durga were immersed into the already polluted river to mark the end of Durga Puja in the capital. The sight seemed to mock at Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Swachh Bharat Abhiyan that aims to create a “clean India” in the next five years and was launched Oct 2 with much fanfare all over the country. A visit to one of the ghats revealed the utter disregard to the appeals made by the prime minister as part of the Clean India campaign as piles of garbage covered the banks of the river. A large quantity of insoluble waste like wood, plastic, and toxic material floated in the river while empty packets of chips, biscuits and plastic bottles were strewn around the bank. There was foul stench in the while hordes of stray dogs sniffed the garbage piles for sweets and food. “The filth will remain here for at least a few days before the ghats are cleaned,” Jamna Singh, a 17-year-old
KAITHAL, OCT 5 (PTI): Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh on Saturday claimed that the Narendra Modi government at the Centre had drastically brought down inflation in just four months of being in power. Campaigning for BJP’s Kalayat constituency candidate Dharam Pal Sharma, he said Modi government was delivering the promises it had made to the people before the Lok Sabha polls. The Home Minister also said that the government had cut petrol prices on three occasions after coming to power while the Congress government had always “increased it”. Rajnath was among the top BJP leaders including Modi and External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj to address rallies in Haryana

KARACHI, OCT 5 (PTI): Pakistan’s former president and military ruler General (retired) Pervez Musharraf has sought to blame India for ceasefire violations along Line of Control, saying it should stop testing the “patience and resolve” of Pakistani Army. Musharraf, who is facing a treason case in the Supreme Court, said, “Regular ceasefire violations on the LoC by the Indians is not good for the region and deplorable.” “I think India should stop testing the patience and resolve of the Pakistani Army,” he said on Express News. Relations between the two countries have been tense in recent times due to repeated ceasefire violations along the LoC for which both governments blame each other. According to India’s Border guarding force BSF, firing
