Tripura, Mizoram reel under fuel crisis
Agartala, Oct 6 (IANS): Tripura and Mizoram are reeling under severe fuel crisis following a road blockade in Meghalaya and disruptions in supplies of Indian Oil Corporation, an official said here Monday. “Road blockade in Meghalaya, delivery problem in Indian Oil Corporation (IOC) and workers problem led to the crisis of petrol and diesel,” said an official of the food, civil supplies and consumer affairs department in Agartala. “We expect that the situation would be normalised within the next two-three days,” said the official. The state government has
asked the petrol pump owners and operators to sell a maximum of two to five litres of fuel per vehicle. However, most of the petrol pumps in Tripura remained closed. The northeastern states of Tripura, Mizoram, parts of Manipur and southern Assam remained cut off from the rest of India for around a week following a blockade of the National Highway (NH) No.6 in Meghalaya. The NH-6 (for merly known as NH 44) serves as the lifeline for Tripura, Mizoram, southern Assam (known as Barak Valley) and western Manipur. For carrying goods, food
grain, essentials and other materials from other parts of the country, the NH-6 is very vital for southern Assam’s four districts, land-locked Tripura, Mizoram and parts of Manipur. The highway starts from Guwahati and passes through Meghalaya’s East Jaintia Hills district. The official said there were also workers’ problems in the IOC due to the Durga Puja festivity. “The Tripura government officials have taken up the matter with the IOC authorities to resolve the problems related to the fuel crisis,” he added. Due to the fuel crisis,
fewer numbers of public and private vehicles are plying on the roads making it a tough time for the commuters in the northeastern state. Agitated vehicle owners have damaged a petrol pump at Santir Bazar in southern Tripura Sunday. Meanwhile, scarcity of oil has hit Mizoram during the past few days and prices of vegetables hit the roof due to frequent road blockade of NH-44 and puja. State Food, Civil Supplies and Consumer Affairs Minister John Rotluangliana said that scarcity of petrol and diesel was mainly caused by puja celebrations as only a few oil tankers
entered Mizoram during the festive season. “I hope that the oil scarcity would ease during this week,” Rotluangliana told PTI, adding that recent road blockades in Meghalaya also contributed to the problem. Meanwhile, vegetable prices soared in Aizawl with tomatoes sold at Rs 100-Rs 120 a kilo and potato costing Rs 50 a kilo since the past four days. The Minister attributed the price rise in vegetables imported from outside the state to Puja celebrations and frequent blockade of NH 44 in Meghalaya, the lifeline of Mizoram and neighbouring states.

Correspondent Shillong, Oct 6: Thousands of Muslims across Meghalaya Monday marked a solemn Eid-ul-Azha, in view of the recent floods and landslides, which claimed more than 50 lives in the state. “There were no decorations on mosques across the state this time. Eid-ul-Azha
was celebrated in solemnly way this time following the recent natural disaster in Meghalaya,” Shillong Muslim Union General Secretary Sayeedullah Nongrum said. Nongrum said the money saved during the Eid celebrations will be donated to the floods victims in Garo Hills region in western part of Meghalaya.
More than two lakh people were affected by the flood waters which have submerged at least 1,172 villages across 27 blocks and over 30 thousand displaced have now been housed in 108 relief camps. At least, 56 people have lost their lives in the recent floods and landslides following the cloudburst in Garo Hills However, thousands of men and children clad in new attire and wearing skull caps offered Namaz-e-Eid in Eidgahs or open grounds and mosques in Shillong, Dawki, Nongpoh, Lad Rymbai, Byrnihat and Garo Hills region. The biggest congregation here was held at Laban Eidgah, where over 10,000 devout Muslims offered prayers. After the prayers, Muslims sacrificed goats and other “halal” animals to commemorate the great sacrifice made by Prophet Ibrahim and urged people to follow his teachings and the Holy Quran. Also known as Bakrid
Eid or Eid-e-Qurban, it is the second major festival of Muslims. The meat of the sacrificed animals is distributed among neighbours, relatives and the poor. Muslims also exchanged greetings with relatives and friends and treated the visitors to their homes with sweet dishes. Meghalaya Governor KK Paul and Chief Minister Mukul Sangma greeted the people of the state on the occasion. Paul hoped “the festival will promote tolerance, harmony and goodwill amongst the people of the state”. Extending his greetings, Chief Minister Sangma hoped that the festival is celebrated with the spirit of sacrifice and also promote the feelings of compassion and love.” Muslims constitute four percent of the nearly three million population of Meghalaya, a predominantly Christian state.

N Marak, the stepfather of the girl, following an FIR lodged by the Richina’s mother. We are interrogating him to find out the exact cause of the incident,” Marak said. Initially, Marak had filed a missing case in a police station after his wife persisted him to do so. In the FIR, Marak had claimed that he took the girl to a doctor in Williamnagar, the district headquarters of East Garo Hills, and sent her home in an auto. Home Minister Roshan Warjri condemned the killing, saying such a brutal act is not tolerated in a civilized society. “This gruesome incident should be condemned by all right thinking citizens in strongest term. Such elements have no place in a civilized society and the police are already on their job to nab the killers,” Warjri said. “I have also directed the police to fast-track the case and to ensure that justice is devilevred at to the girl’s family at the earliest,” she added.

Guwahati, Oct 6 (PTI): The Centre would invite suggestions from students, teachers and parents for the proposed New Education Policy, the process of which will begin from next year, Union Human Resource Development Minister Smriti Zubin Irani said today. “For the New Education Policy, we will go to all the states. We will invite suggesK Y M C
tions from students, teachers and parents for it and will discuss with them how this policy should be,” Irani said at a function here. The government would use all the media -- print, electronic and Internet -- for engaging the society in the process, she said. Stating that all the past education policies were framed by educationists and academi-
cians, she said for whom such a policy mattered most were never associated. Irani, however, added: “I am not here to blame the past. I am here to frame the course for the future.” The minister said the process for the New Education Policy for the country will begin from next year. India had last formulated the National Education Policy in 1986. Smriti Irani also said she will appeal to the UGC to institute a Chair in the name of Assamese literature giant Lakshminath Bezbaruah in every university of the state to mark the 150th anniversary of his birth this year. “As soon as I return to Delhi, I will appeal to the UGC to set up a Lakshminath Bezbaruah Chair in every university of Assam,” Irani said at an event at Down Town University here. Recognising the contribution of Bezbaruah, she said the 150th birth anniversary of the great Assamese should be celebrated across the country. “Assam is celebrating his birth anniversary, but why is India not celebrating? All parts of the country should celebrate. It is important to unite the nation and unite the NE. It is important that younger generation knows about the contribution of Bezbaruah,” Irani said.

IMPHAL, Oct 6: Poll campaign for the Hiyanglam by-poll got shriller Monday when prominent political personalities of both ruling Congress and BJP took part at election rallies of their respective candidates. While BJP’s national leaders including Union minister of state for home Kiran Rijiju took part in the flag hoisting ceremony of the party candidate Maibam Danabir Singh at his residence today, chief minister O Ibobi Singh led party state leaders in wooing the voters at an election rally of the Congress held at Langmeidong. Even though five political parties have fielded their respective candidates, Congress and BJP were considering the seat ‘very important’ not for number but for their popularity which can be surmised by today’s grand elections rallies held at different places. BJP do not have a single representative in the current state Assembly and getting the seat will be a big success for the party that has swept the recently concluded Lok Sabha elections. The party has to prove its increasing popularity if its candidate win the by-poll which is scheduled on October 17. In their efforts to win the heart of the voters, national leaders like Tapir Gao (general secretary NE charge) and Ramesh Prasad Chaurasia are camping in the state. Today’s visit of Union minister Kiran Rijiju was considered to be another strategy to woo the voter. In a bid to win the heart of the voters,
Rijiju criticized Ibobi led Congress government for failing to protect life and property of its citizens while citing the recent series of bomb blasts at various part of the state. Taking a dig at the Ibobi government, former national secretary of the BJP, Rameshwar alleged that corruption was rampant under Ibobi leadership in the state, reminding BJP’s strong allegation of siphoning Rs 400 crore meant for cleansing Loktak Lake during Congress’s 13 years rule in the state. On the other hand, the ruling Congress in its bid to woo the voters held its grand election campaign at the controversial site at Langmeidong under heavy security deployment. Controversy surfaced when villagers of Langmeidong and Trinamool Congress workers strongly objected to holding election rally at the public ground which is just adjacent to the residence of AITC candidate Dr Radheshyam. Congress went ahead with the rally with heavy deployment of security forces. Chief minister O Ibobi Singh, deputy chief minister Gaikhangam and other state leaders of the party took part in the meeting. The ruling Congress was leaving no stone unturned to woo the voters even though the seat has nothing to do with the seat so far as the number is concern. The party has a cleared majority in the state Assembly with 47 members including five MSCP legislators who had joined the party before the Lok Sabha election. However, the party has to win the elections to prove the people’s mandate on the ruling party.
