“Protect the environment”, with the Departments of Education and Health collaborating with Sambandh Health Foundation (SHF), an NGO, which runs a campaign to create awareness on how tobacco is damaging the environment. “Tobacco is consuming our people and children are the soft targets. the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The Centre was also giving special emphasis to the northeast region under Modi’s– reformation, perform and transform mantra. Modi’s idea was less government with large governance. It was through this mantra he initiated the reformation which will bring transformation after being performed, he said. Dr Ranjan claimed that from the very day of assuming office as Prime Minister eight years ago in 2014, there has been a revolution in the country’s economy as the Prime Minister was giving emphasis on reformation of the country. The said the country’s economic reform did actually take place since 1980

but it was not upto the expected mark. The development paces could not be accelerated as the benefits of the initiative did not reach the general people. The benefits went to the pocket of only a few sections of the society, he added Modi strongly believed that the country can be pushed forward to become global power through reformation. It was with this idea that over 1500 redundant laws of the British era were abolished. The Centre was also actively considering replacement of the controversial Act by a humanitarian law. The recent move of partial removal of the Act from the northeast was a part of it.

A new land reform act may also be introduced which will benefit the farming community in the country, he added. The reformation of the land law was a must so as to outreach the benefits of various farmers’ welfare schemes to the deserving farmers, he said. ICAR-Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Imphal hosted the Prime Minister’s interaction with various beneficiaries/ schemes of the government of India as a part of the ‘Garib Kalyan Sammelan’. Apart from the Union minister, MLA Sapam Kunjakishore, Imphal West Up-Adhyaksha Laishram Boby Devi, Imphal West additional district magistrate Dr N Johnson and joint director of ICAR Research Complex for NEH Region, Manipur Centre Dr I Mechachandra also attended the function. Sharing her experience as an elected member of the local self-government, Up-Adhyaksha Laishram Boby Devi stressed the need for certain rectification to the guidelines for various schemes so that the benefits can be availed by the targeted beneficiaries.

MW power,” Sarma said in a statement. Assam meets most of its energy requirements by purchasing electricity from various players of Northeast and the rest of the country. The chief minister further said that inspite of having immense natural resources, the state lagged behind in tapping the potential in the renewable energy sector due to lack of proper planning. The newly inaugurated Amguri Solar Park will give a further boost to the power sector and this project will always remain a milestone in the history of the state, he said while expressing optimism.

“To realise sustainable development, there is a need to harness the potential of renewable energy. The Amguri Solar Park will have a positive impact towards this,” Sarma said. He said that the state government from the beginning made efforts to give a new momentum to the power sector, as a result of which the state is making profit in this sector. The chief minister asked the Power Department officials to strengthen the transmission line and install adequate number of transformers to ensure uninterrupted power supply to the people of Amguri.

Darbari politics

iving up to the expectations of being in the news for the wrong reasons, the Congress has landed itself in a most unwanted and damaging situation when the party(or precisely Rahul and Priyanka) announced ten candidates for the upcoming Rajya Sabha election scheduled on June 10. Polling for 57 Rajya Sabha seats in 15 states has been scheduled for June 10. The Congress names of 10 candidates for the Rajys Sabha after unusually hectic parleys - P Chidambaram, Mukul Wasnik, Rajiv Shukla, Ajay Maken, Jairam Ramesh, Randeep Surjewala, Pramod Tiwari, Ranjeet Ranjan, Vivek Tankha and Imran Pratapgarhi. The Rahul and Priyanka imprint was large. The Congress has the votes to elect 10 from various states. The list is overwhelmingly full of Darbaris who owe their political existence to some member of the Gandhi family. These Darbaris could be dubbed as mass-less wonders, who have formed an exclusive club of drum beaters for the family in the high command and who may be the reason for the declining fortunes of the Congress. The list of the party’s candidates for the Rajya Sabha, which primarily accommodated family loyalists, have left several leaders angry and disappointed, coming as it did with lofty promises of revamp at the Udaipur brainstorming. The Congress may have been justified in denying tickets to veteran and experienced orators in parliament such as Anand Sharma and Ghulam Nabi Azad for open dissent. However after they both patched up with Sonia the snub is going to cost the party dearly in the upper house at a time when the part is on the back foot. These two leaders have been leading from the front in attacking the ruling NDA on every major issue. The ‘chosen few’ have been parachuted to states to which they do not belong. Rajiv Shukla who hails from UP and Ranjeet Ranjan from Bihar were named from Chhattisgarh. Randeep Surjewala, who is from Haryana, was nominated from Rajasthan. Sonia had to placate Haryana boss Bhupinder Singh Hooda and parachuted Surjewala to another state. Ajay Maken, from Delhi, has been given the ticket from Haryana, Surjewala’s home state. Taking a dig at his party over the selection of Rajya Sabha candidates, Congress Lok Sabha MP Manish Tewari said that the Upper House had become a parking lot. Congress’ key spokesperson Pawan Khera from Rajasthan, who was expecting to be named, expressed dismay in a tweet. Another expectant and General secretary of Mahila Congress and former actress Nagma, who joined Congress at Sonia’s personal invitation was promised of a Rajya Sabha seat. Najma has been waiting for 18 years but the party instead, parachuted Imran Pratapgarhi who is from UP, to Maharashtra. While Maken, Surjewala, Jairam are considered to be extremely close to Rahul Gandhi, the nomination of three UP leaders, despite the drubbing in the UP assembly elections where the party won only two seats, perhaps reflects Priyanka Gandhi’s “long-term vision” for the Congress in the state. The Congress has forgotten, that in Rajasthan (elections next year), it is sitting on a political volcano that can erupt any time. Rebels led by Sachin Pilot are upset with the leadership as their demand to replace Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot and install their leader has not been met. The Rajya Sabha election was a good opportunity to accommodate rebels. Instead of looking at the party’s electoral interests, the Congress has instead chosen serve self-interests for which it will pay dearly.

DailyDevotion Put God First

Jesus did not commit Himself to them…for He knew what was in man. —John 2:24-25

Put Trust in God First. Our Lord never put His trust in any person. Yet He was never suspicious, never bitter, and never lost hope for anyone, because He put His trust in God first. He trusted absolutely in what God’s grace could do for others. If I put my trust in human beings first, the end result will be my despair and hopelessness toward everyone. I will become bitter because I have insisted that people be what no person can ever be— absolutely perfect and right. Never trust anything in yourself or in anyone else, except the grace of God. Put God’s Will First. “Behold, I have come to do Your will, O God” (Hebrews 10:9). A person’s obedience is to what he sees to be a need— our Lord’s obedience was to the will of His Father. The rallying cry today is, “We must get to work! The heathen are dying without God. We must go and tell them about Him.” But we must first make sure that God’s “needs” and His will in us personally are being met. Jesus said, “…tarry…until you are endued with power from on high” (Luke 24:49). The purpose of our Christian training is to get us into the right relationship to the “needs” of God and His will. Once God’s “needs” in us have been met, He will open the way for us to accomplish His will, meeting His “needs” elsewhere. Put God’s Son First. “Whoever receives one little child like this in My name receives Me” (Matthew 18:5). God came as a baby, giving and entrusting Himself to me. He expects my personal life to be a “Bethlehem.” Am I allowing my natural life to be slowly transformed by the indwelling life of the Son of God? God’s ultimate purpose is that His Son might be exhibited in me.

NAGALAND POST, DIMAPUR WEDNESDAY, JUNE 1, 2022

Post-mortem

Speech of Q. Tuccu, NSCN chairman at National Assembly M y dear members of the house! After more than seven (7) decades of Naga freedom movement, we are faced with the political exigencies that compelled us to call for this National Assembly as the pressing situation prompted us to reaffirm our stand after Government of India expressed its opposition to honor the usage of our God given Naga National identity symbolized by Flag and Constitution. How can we forfeit Naga National Flag and Naga Constitution in the name of Naga political solution? What belongs to us that define our political identity can never be compromised for the sweet morsel in the name of Naga political settlement. We cannot be made a laughing stock before the world by tamely succumbing to pressure or

temptation. In August 3, 2015 we signed the historic Framework Agreement with deep political insight taking into consideration the Naga people’s sovereign rights and dignity. We have applied our historical and political intuition while signing the agreement. Unfortunately, there are forces at work who are trying to undermine the political significance of Framework Agreement by giving wrongful interpretation with bewildering comments to suit their selfish agenda in collusion with the Government of India. Naga people’s sovereign identity is very prominently reflected in the Framework Agreement. That much care we have taken and not the other way round as maliciously propagated by few political leaders that Naga flag and constitution, in-

cluding integration are not mentioned in Framework Agreement. The bitter irony is that every attempt is being made to confuse the Naga people on the political significance of Framework Agreement where the future of Naga political journey is laid out. We have come across the stand of the Government of India on the core issues of Naga National Flag, Constitution and integration and echoed by some Naga leaders. We have also seen how some Naga political leaders have expressed their derisive attitude towards the Framework Agreement. These people had stoop themselves so low to pass demeaning and unhealthy comments against the sanctity of Naga political issue after they gathered the subtle hints from their Delhi based political

bosses. We cannot allow these people to defile Naga political issue by bringing another Naga political agreement with flattering promises as done in the past. The past record of political agreements with India has given us bitter lessons and we have to stand guard against any Naga accord that betrayed our rights and national identity. Our national forefathers gave up the pleasures of their lives to set the footprints for us so that we can live in our land Nagalim where our rights and national political identity are not taken away by any force on earth. We have come this far because of their inspirations and visionary leadership. Therefore, the story of Naga political struggle, courage and valor shown by our resilient patriots and freedom fighters

should never be allowed to end up in the manner that betrayed them. Today, the hour of reckoning has come. This is the moment of truth we have to face. Hundreds of thousands have given their lives for the Nagas’ freedom and the responsibility is heaped upon the shoulder of NSCN to fulfill their prayers and dreams for the honorable Naga political settlement with the Naga National Flag flying high. We have to prove ourselves before God and before the Naga people and the whole world that we the NSCN members, the frontline torch bearers of Naga political movement shall stand the ground TILL THE LAST MAN STANDING in defense of our God’s given rights. In God let us humble ourselves and trust Him for

the battle is of God who will fight for us. This is, therefore, the momentous occasion which will decide the future of the Naga nation for years to come. So let us take into conscious account every single word that we have to deliberate today. No turning away from the stand we have to take today. Let us, however, believe that “we shall overcome someday”. We must stand by one another as we take courage and support from God under the banner of “Nagalim for Christ” by recommitting ourselves to do His will. The God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob who did many wonders and miracles before the people of Israel is the same God who can save us if we open our hearts to Him to fight for us. Q. Tuccu Chairman NSCN May 31, 2022.

Parents dismayed and confused over online admission

V

ery soon Class 10 and Class 12 result will be out or may be already out by the time this write up is published. When the results are out, Parents and students alike will rush out for hunting of Higher Secondary Schools and colleges for further studies. It is this time of the year where students and parents are both happy and stressed at the same time, since they will have to secure a seat from schools or colleges. Adding to the misery of the parents the Government Higher Secondary Schools has introduced Single Online Admission for all its students. Though many have appreciated the changes brought to school admission process

A

in going through online mode by the School Education during the pandemic. Since, theoretically it will keep away parents and students from crowds and do admission at home or less crowded Computer Centers. Yet, in practical this is a futile exercise not even helping the very reason why it was started. Many Government Schools also have objected to Online admission yet it have fallen into deaf ears. As a concerned citizen, let me highlight some reasons why Higher Secondary School should go for Offline mode of Admission: Many parents are uneducated who does not even own a smart phone where

they can browse, forget about scanning documents. Therefore the question of parents helping students in doing online admission does not arise. Even students who never have owned a phone, (and we cannot expect them to own one) how can we expect them to do online admission. Therefore, their only hope is to go physically to the school where they want to take admission. M a n y G ove r n m e n t Higher Secondary Schools have notified to its intending students and parents who wants to join the school to do admission online on their own or go to Computer Service Centers. But many parents keep coming to schools unless the school do the online

admission for them. In certain schools some parents and schools authority have verbal skirmishes because of the online admission. The school therefore, in the end bow down to the parents demand and do the online admission for all the students whoever comes for help. Even the Computer Service Centers taking the advantage of the situation, charge exorbitant rate for their services as high from Rs. 100 – 500 putting more fuel to the already stressed parents and students. On the other hand, Government Schools authority complained that Online Admission has doubled their workload as it is a long process which takes almost a

month and hampers academic performance. Many Students because of the complication of admission process go away to Private schools and only the leftovers finally come to Government Schools. Moreover, the uniform fee structure as given by the Department of School education is not suitable for schools. Schools have different needs and depending on the needs they charge fees. For example, different schools have different uniforms, depending on that they charge fees. Whereas the department fee structure does not take into account of these differences. (However, saying that Government Schools too should be accountable of its fee to the community

and students.) Although the Online Admission has started with good intentions, yet it is not practical for the majority of the parents and students at the moment. Therefore, considering all these facts, this is a humble plea and request to the authority of School Education Department to go for Offline mode of admission on behalf of the many distressed uneducated parents and students who is undergoing difficult hardship because of the Complicated Online admission that School Education have started. On behalf of Concerned Parents and Students. Kedosakho Chucha Address : GHSS Medziphema.

Eight years in North East – A model for governance

cross cultures the Number 8 is held as a symbol of victory, prosperity and overcoming. It also represents infinite perfection, balance and harmony. Ashta, in Sanskrit, is the number of wealth and abundance and one can draw a fascinating correlation between the 8 years of governance led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the magical transformation of the eight north eastern states. It is an inspiring lesson in governance, of a region neglected over a protracted period of time, shooting to prominence as the Ashtalakshmi of the nation. After the huge mandate in 2014, Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his conviction to usher in a new dawn of progress in the region. He called the Northeast region ‘India’s Natural Economic Zone’ and made it a priority to tap into it. Today, firmly on the agenda, he calls it the ‘New Growth engine of India’ In spite of being endowed with extraordinary natural wealth, strategic advantage as the gateway to Southeast Asia and unrivalled economic potential, the eight states of the North East never got the attention that they deserved. Unwilling to expend serious political capital, successive governments harped on insurgency, difficult terrain, cultural distinctiveness, as excuses for their political apathy. However, winning the public mandate in 2014, the Prime Minister started articulating solutions ingrained in the governance philosophy of Sewa, Sushasan and Gareeb Kalyaan. Eight years hence, we are seeing visible differences in every aspect and the numbers speak for themselves. Since 2014, militancy incidents have reduced by 74%, deaths of civilians has come down by 84% and with more than an 800%

increase in surrenders by extremists, AFSPA has been lifted from some districts for the first time in decades. With sheer political will and leadership, decades old standoffs are nearing resolution – the Naga Framework Agreement and the tripartite agreement on the rehabilitation of the Bru-Reangs, to name a few. The intent of this government to resolve such long standing issues is clearly visible in the case of the resettlement of BruReangs. In May 2012, the Government at that time planned for the repatriation of about 669 Reang families but was able to repatriate only 7 Bru families. The UPA Government blamed resistance and misinformation campaign by a section of Bru leaders for this. On the other hand, in the recently finalised agreement, the Government will provide an assistance of close to Rs.600 crores for the rehabilitation of Reangs, and ensure all-round development of Reangs including providing a plot of land, assisting in the construction of a house, provide rations and access to public welfare schemes of the state and central governments. It is this 360-degree thinking that has allowed the Government to provide compelling solutions. While ushering in peace, foundations for prosperity were simultaneously laid with massive financial outlays: The North East has seen a huge jump from Rs 36,108 crores in 2014 to Rs. 76,040 crores in 2022 (110%) in the budgetary support by Government of India. Cumulatively, since 2014, over 3 lakh crores have been spent in the region. The pinnacle of Sewa to the people of North East has been to impart them the power of mobility and connectivity. In 2014, Arunachal Pradesh and Meghalaya were put up on the railway map for the first time. Before

2014, only Assam’s capital Guwahati was connected. Today, Arunachal’s Itanagar, Tripura’s Agartala and Manipur have already been connected and remaining 5 capital connectivity projects worth Rs. 45,016 crores are nearing completion. Government of India has also spent over Rs 41,000 crores on road connectivity with over 38,000 kms of rural roads have been completed since 2014 while projects worth 75,000 crores are currently ongoing in the North East. Today there are 15 new airports in North East, from just 6 in 2014. Making sure that, like the rest of India, aam naagrik of North East also receives help from improved air connectivity, the region is a priority area under the UDAN scheme with 46 operational routes. The tele-density (number of phones per 100 people), especially rural teledensity, in the Northeast has significantly improved. In April 2014, rural tele-density at 42.68% was below the national average (43.96%). Today, at 61.36%, rural teledensity is above the national average (58.50%). The recent commissioning of 20 Gbps international bandwidth for Northeast through Cox’s Bazar in Bangladesh by BSNL, is quantum leap in internet connectivity. This would not only address the issues of latency and network congestion but will open doors to North East’s potential in becoming leaders in BPO and IT industry with the establishment of software parks and high speed Data centers for business purposes in North Eastern States. To ensure that Sewa of the North East continues unrelentingly, Sushasan has been adopted as the key enabler: Working hand-inhand with the dynamic and committed State Governments of the North East, we are moving ahead with

a concrete plan of action working to leverage the inherent strengths of the region in sectors like agriculture, tourism, textiles, handicrafts. Recent cabinet initiatives such as the revival of the Northeast Agricultural Marketing Corporation (NERAMAC) and the National Mission for Edible Oil for palm oils aim to leverage the Northeast region’s potential. The Edible Oil Mission aims to increase cultivation from 40 thousand hectares to 3.4 lakh hectares (700%) in the Northeast and more than 50% of the Mission’s 9,000 crore outlay will accrue to the Northeast region. The formation of a joint Agri-Task force to provide strategic direction to these initiatives will ensure speedy resolution and implementation of the various agri and agri sector allied schemes. Today, we are working closely than ever and building consensus on development of the North East like never before. An upcoming workshop of Chief Ministers and Chief Secretaries of North Eastern States along with Union Ministers and Secretaries on developmental issues of the North East, is likely to break the ground for a tradition of cooperative federalism and collective responsibility for development of North East. The ultimate object of Sushasan with the spirit of Sewa is the welfare of our citizens across economic backgrounds, which makes Gareeb Kalyan the fountainhead of it all. The gover nment is determined to ensure that welfare schemes reach every corner of the region. Towards this goal, in the past 8 years, under Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana (PM-GKAY), amount more than Rs 10,000 crores and more than Rs 64,000 crores under National Food Security Act (NFSA) have

been spent. More than 4 crore accounts are opened under Jandhan, and over Rs. 39,000 crores were spent under MGNREGA and the coverage of these central flagship schemes for Gareeb Kalyan is being improved every passing day. This comprehensive approach of good governance is instilling hope and aspirations in the people of the region like never before. Today there is an ambition of making North East the

hub of sports in the world, a leading exporter of exotic horticultural products and a hotbed of Startups while fast becoming the most attractive tourist destination in India. Wrapping up the eight years of transformation, it is now time to brace for the Amrit Kaal and herald a glorious chapter of growth for the North East Region. G. Kishan Reddy, Minister for Culture, Tourism and DoNER, Government of India

Re -designation of government posts Sir,

We Nagas are always in tune with the latest fashion attires and cars but we forgot to equip ourselves for the 21rst century in our Offices We had telephones replaced by cellphones and typewriters replaced by computers so we redesignated Typists as computer assistants but we forgot to do the same for thousands of Posts, stubbornly holding on to our 19th century mentality. Now to create new posts is out of the question , so it is time to Re Designate 25% regular posts to absorb our highly qualified youth This is possible only when we update the century old qualification criterias and replace it with new terminologies like Police Inspector cum Microbiologist ,lawyer, Pathologist ,electronics, computer engineer etc ASI cum Staff nurse etc Havildars cum technicians and so on I think it’s high time for those of us who live in Smart Cities with the latest gadgets to plan accordingly and move ahead. Keweü Kenye Yepthomi Sir,

Highway potholes

It has been two years since we welcomed the 4-Lane highway from Dimapur to Chumukedima, and it didn’t take long for the highway to welcome us with potholes. Some stretches of the 4-lane highway have already crumbled into potholes. The tarmac surface of the highways too has withered, creating an uneven stretch. Since on highways, motorist usually travel at an average speed of 50-60km/hr, the potholes posses a major threat to motorist either hitting it directly or while trying to avoid it. The potholes can also seriously damage vehicles. I therefore urge the concerned authority to look into this matter at the earliest and have the road repaired before larger potholes cave in. and even the international agencies were admitting it. Modi said that before 2014, there was news about various scams but now his government’s development schemes and zerotolerance against corruption are discussed. Before 2014, corruption was viewed as an essential part of government, he alleged. About his government’s measures to combat the Covid pandemic, the prime minister said nearly 200 crore vaccine doses have been administered in India so far. India exported Covid vaccines to various countries and Himachal Pradesh’s Baddi industrial unit played a vital role in manufacturing those jabs, he told the rally. “Now India extends a hand of friendship not under compulsion but to help others as was done by providing Covid vaccines to several countries,” the prime minister added. Referring to the under-construction AIIMS in Bilaspur, he said, “We plan to build a medical college in every district of

On Clean Election movement, which was a p a r t o f t h e 1 5 0 ye a r s celebration, Chishi stressed on reflecting upon Christian morality while choosing a leader and avoiding agetampering, proxy-voting, booth capturing or asking money or vehicles from candidates. He cautioned that with such an attitude, Nagas would be deprived from having the right leader and the State will be deprived of employment or job. “We must not destroy our future generations because of our own greed,” he emphasised, noting that Nagas were sceptical of Clean Election movement. He however maintained that it was every individual’s responsibility to maintain integrity while choosing a leader and must start from “you and me”. KBPF president and CBCK pastor Rev Vezopa Rakho offered a prayer as the bikers continued their onward journey. Meanwhile, more riders from Kohima joined the bike rally.

A H M E DA BA D, M AY 3 1 (PTI): Former Congress leader Hardik Patel will join the BJP on June 2 in the presence of Gujarat party president C R Paatil, a state party spokesperson said on Tuesday. Patel’s move comes ahead of the Gujarat Assembly elections due later this year. The BJP has been in power in the state for over two decades. Patel, 28, had in 2015 led a violent agitation seeking quota for his Patidar community and was a strong critic of the BJP in the past. The then BJP government in Gujarat had booked the firebrand leader in several cases, including on the charge of sedition. However, Patel, who had joined the Congress in 2019 and was later made the state unit’s working president, quit the party earlier this month. Since then, there were speculations that he may join the ruling BJP.

Kejriwal said Jain was following the path of truth. “God is with us,” he said, and hoped the minister would walk out free and the judiciary will do justice to him. Immediately after the arrest of Jain on Monday, Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia and AAP MP Sanjay Singh had lashed at the BJP, but Kejriwal did not react to the development.

SHIMLA, MAY 31 (PTI): Corruption was viewed as an essential part of government before 2014, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on Tuesday and asserted that India saw a sea change in the last eight years due to the BJP-led dispensation’s zero-tolerance towards graft. At a rally in Shimla’s Ridge Maidan to mark the eighth anniversary of becoming prime minister, Modi said, “Now our borders are more secure than they were before 2014.” He said after coming to power, his government pruned nine crore fake names from the list of beneficiaries of various schemes. “Be it Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana or scholarship or any other scheme, we have eradicated the scope of corruption through direct transfer of benefits. “We have transferred over Rs 22 lakh crore to the bank accounts of beneficiaries of various schemes through direct benefit transfer,” the prime minister said. He claimed that poverty was on the decline in the country

If there were even one per cent substance in it it, I would have taken action,” Kejriwal said when asked about the opposition Congress and BJP demand to remove Jain. the country.” “I do not consider myself prime minister. Rather, I consider myself as ‘pradhan sevak’ and a member of the family of 130-crore Indians and my life is for them,” Prime Minister Modi told the rally. Before the rally, interacted virtually with beneficiaries of various Central schemes and released Rs 21,000 crore as the 11th instalment of the Kisan Samman Nidhi. Following his arrival at the Mall Road in the Himachal Pradesh capital, Modi, accompanied by Chief Minister Jai Ram Thakur, walked to the venue of the rally in Ridge Maidan around 11.30 pm. There the prime minister interacted with the beneficiaries of the Central schemes from across the country. During one such interaction, Modi told Santoshi, a woman from Karnatka’s Kalaburagi, that he was impressed by the way she expressed her views and had she been a BJP worker he would have asked her to contest polls. An ex-serviceman from Ladakh told the prime minister that he has benefitted from the Jal Jeevan Mission and PM Aawas Yojana and faced no hiccup in availing the benefits of the scheme. Lalita Devi from Bihar’s Banka informed Modi that she has got a ‘pucca’ house and a toilet under the PM Awas Yojana Rural. Pankaj Sahani from Tripura said that he had got a ration card under the ‘One Nation, One card’ scheme. Sama Devi from Himachal Pradesh’s Sirmaur told the prime minister that she got Rs 1 lakh for building a ‘pucca’ house under the PM Awas Yojana (Gramin) and that she got Rs. 6,000 in three instalments in a year under the Kisan Samman Nidhi.

NEW DELHI, MAY 31 (PTI): AAP national convener and Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Tuesday broke his silence on the arrest of his minister Satyendar Jain by the ED, saying the case is “completely fake and politically motivated”. Kejrwal asser ted that his gover nment and the Aam Aadmi Party(AAP) are “hardcore honest”. “I have studied the case against Jain. It is completely fake and motivated by political reasons and he has been deliberately framed. “We have faith in the judiciary. Jain will come out clean and the

Rupee plunges to all-time low of 77.71 against USD

MUMBAI, MAY 31 (PTI): The rupee declined by 17 paise to close at its all-time low of 77.71 against the US currency on Tuesday as surging US bond yields dampened the appeal of riskier assets. Losses in the domestic equities, high crude oil prices and forex outflows also weighed on the rupee. At the interbank foreign exchange market, the rupee opened lower at 77.65 against the greenback and finally settled at 77.71, down 17 paise over its previous close. During the session, the rupee touched an intraday low of 77.71 and a high of 77.62. On Monday, the rupee settled at 77.54 against the US dollar. This is the fifth straight monthly decline for the r upee amid weak risk sentiments, foreign fund outflows and concerns over high inflation.

CAST, TVC slam tirades on Dr. Jamir

D I M A P U R , M AY 3 1 (NPN): Chümoukedima Ao Senso Telongjem and Tir Village Council have come out against the tirade by NSCN(I-M) directed against Dr.S.C. Jamir in the media. CAST president N Panjung Jamir and general secretary Bendangakum Imsong vehemently condemned the “malicious and defamatory attack” on Dr. Jamir by NSCN (I-M) at a time when the entire Naga populace, at the critical juncture of Naga political scenario, were hopeful for a just and lasting solution. CAST said the attempt of NSCN (I-M) to “suppress the voice and opinion of an upright and highly respected Naga leader like Jamir” was extremely condemnable. It pointed out that the Naga cause belong to all Nagas and as such every Naga had the right to voice his/her opinion. Instead of suppressing voices/opinions that are contradictory to their own, CAST said NSCN (I-M) leadership would do well to take the opinions of all and work towards a solution that was acceptable to all Nagas. CAST further reiterated the call of Ao Senden, in its May 22 statement, to stop the “blame game” and to make

public the competencies of the Framework Agreement without further delay. CAST also expressed gratitude to all individuals and civil societies who had openly come out in support of Dr. Jamir. “A leader is made bold and strong because of the support he receives from the people he leads. Your unequivocal support to one of our ownmember will never be forgotten,” CAST stated. TVC: Tir Village Council (TVC), Chümoukedima said it was perplexed by the consistent attack on former CM and governor, Dr. SC Jamir on the prevailing Naga political issue. TVC chairman L. Temjenmeren Jamir and secretary T Senli Jamir said the Nagas were well aware that Jamir had only relayed nothing more that the statements and views expressed by Prime Minister and Home minister concerning Naga solution. TVC was of the firm belief that “no perjury was committed by the veteran Naga political leader whatsoever.” TVC further resolved to support the press statements issued by various Naga organizations for the common wellbeing of the Nagas.

for which the zoo staff with the help of a Zoo Veterinarian are looking after them constantly since their arrival to the zoo, the director stated.

DIMAPUR, MAY 31 (NPN): Business Association of Nagas (BAN) extended unequivocal support to Central Nagaland Tribes Council’s (CNTC) stand on petroleum exploration and production in Nagaland, as it was one of the most pressing requirements for the State’s economy. BAN president L Mongkum Jamir and general secretary Dr Yan Murry in a statement however cautioned that unless the state explored and capitalised on the natural resources available in the State now, it would rather be late to make gainful usage of the potential resources. Pointing out that one of the major challenges that the present world economy faced was energy security, they said Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s assertion in the international fora about India’s enhanced renewable energy target of 450 GW meant that in less than 10 years, renewable energy would account for 57% of the country’s

They alleged that inactivity of successive State governments, delusion of considerable national workers, sycophancy in several Naga organisations and beggars’ mentality amongst many of “our” people had brought the State to this stage. Claiming that there were lakhs of frustrated youth who would do anything to protect their existential threat unless infrastructure and avenues were created to accommodate them in a meaningful and productive engagement, the BAN leaders appealed to the government to act proactively towards building the right environment and open up exploration of fossil fuel in the State without further delay.

Currently, they said global transport was heavily dependent on fossil fuels, which was expected to decline drastically in coming years. When the world was heading towards renewable economy, they wondered why people were still holding back on oil exploration and production. They also asked why the government was not acting seriously on exploration & production of fossil fuel in Nagaland when the State’s fiscal deficit was mounting and the economy was reeling at all-time low. They said Nagaland’s Gross State Domestic Product contribution to national GDP was hardly 0.147%, while the State had one of the highest unemployment rates in the country. The duo mentioned that

Moosewala makes final Mamata calls for defeating BJP in 2024 LS polls; BJP responds journey on favourite tractor

M A N S A ( P U N JA B ) , MAY 31 (PTI): A sea of mourners bid a tearful farewell to popular Punjabi singer Sidhu Moosewala, who was cremated at his native village in Mansa district on Tuesday afternoon. The body of the 28-year-old singer-politician, who was shot dead on Sunday, was brought to his home in Moosa village amid tight security on Tuesday morning from Mansa civil hospital, where the post-mortem was conducted. Moosewala’s family, including his parents, were inconsolable as they sat beside the body at their home. His mother was seen trying to console her husband as people from Punjab, Ra-

jasthan and Chandigarh among other places queued up in large numbers to get a last glimpse of the singer. The singer’s favourite tractor, which had figured in many of his music videos, was bedecked with flowers for his last ride to a familyowned field for the cremation. Notwithstanding the scorching heat, mourners joined the funeral procession as Moosewala’s father and mother stood on the tractor with folded hands, accompanying their son on his final journey. Some of his fans wore t-shirts with Moosewala’s picture printed on them. The singer’s father, Balkour Singh, even took off his turban on seeing the

He said the target killing of Kashmiri Pandits is continuing and the community is now tired of making appeals to the government. “We should be relocated so that we can be saved. A handful of KP employees assembled at the Ghanta Ghar (Clock tower) at Lal Chowk here to protest against the killing, the officials said. Another group of employees assembled at Batwara in Sonawar area of the city and raised slogans against the union territory administration for its failure to ensure foolproof security for employees of Hindu communities. The protestors, mostly women, raised slogans like “Administration hai hai” (down with administration), “minorities ko jeenay do’ (let the minorities live) and “We want justice”. In South Kashmir Qazigund town, the KP employees blocked one tube of the Jammu-Srinagar Nartional Highway to protest against killing of Rajni Bala inside a school at Gopalpora in Kulgam district on Tuesday. The protestors appealed to the Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah to intervene in the matter to ensure security of the Kashmiri Pandit minorities. Government has failed completely in providing security for the KPs. Rahul Bhat was killed inside a district (Tehsil) office on May 12 and today our sister Rajni Bala was shot dead inside the school. “We appeal PM, HM and LG to intervene in the matter. Banerjee said the Modi government began its tenure with fake promises, culminating in failed experiments eight years later. “The BJP government has destroyed the lives of the common people ... The citizens of the country are fed up with the anti-people government at the Centre”, she said. Banerjee, who was addressing a meeting of TMC workers of Purulia district, also said, “The BJP-led government at the Centre is adulterated. It has destroyed the country’s economy through disastrous decisions like demonetisation, which was a big scam”. Slamming the Modi government for “using” central agencies to destroy the opposition, Banerjee said the CBI and ED should first arrest corrupt BJP ministers. “They (Modi government) are using CBI and ED and other central agencies to silence the opposition. They are busy arresting opposition leaders. You (Modi govt) have arrested Delhi’s minister (Satyendra Jain). You have arrested a Maharashtra minister. People heaped praises on Moosewala for his songs and even raised slogans in his favour. “He was a good-natured man. He would never say no to anybody for a selfie. We are sad that he is not amongst us today,” said a villager. Some villagers and fans expressed anger over the Punjab police pruning Moosewala’s security cover just a day before he was shot dead and sought the strictest punishment for the killers. “Those who were behind the killing of Moosewala should be given exemplary punishment,” said an elderly man who came from Jalandhar. In major blow, EU bans UK health authorities issue updated guidance as monkeypox rise imports of most Russian oil

BRUSSELS, MAY 31 (AP): In the most significant effort yet to punish Russia for its war in Ukraine, the European Union agreed to ban the overwhelming majority of Russian oil imports after tense negotiations that exposed the cracks in European unity. From the moment Russia invaded on Feb. 24, the West has sought to hit Moscow’s lucrative energy sector to cut off funding for its war. But any such move is a double-edged sword, especially in Europe, which relies on the country for 25% of its oil and 40% of its natural gas. European countries that are even more heavily dependent on Russia have been especially reluctant to act. In a move unthinkable just months ago, EU leaders agreed late Monday to cut around 90% of all Russian oil imports over the next six months. In response to the EU’s decision, Mikhail

Ulyanov, Russia’s permanent representative to international organizations in Vienna, took to Twitter, saying: “Russia will find other importers.” Russia has not shied away from withholding its energy supplies, despite the economic damage it could suffer as a result. And Russian energy giant Gazprom announced it would cut natural gas supplies to Dutch trader GasTerra on Tuesday and it is considering cutting off Denmark. It’s already turned the taps off in Bulgaria, Poland and Finland. Dutch trader GasTerra said the move was announced after it refused Gazprom’s “one-sided payment requirements.” That’s a reference to Russian President Vladimir Putin’s demand that European nations pay for gas in rubles — an arrangement many have refused. GasTerra said homes would not be hit as it had bought gas elsewhere in anticipation of a shutoff.

Talks at EU headquarters in Brussels were set Tuesday to focus on ways to end the trading bloc’s dependence on Russian energy, by diversifying supplies and speeding up the transition to renewable sources and away, as much as possible given recent price hikes, from fossil fuels.

LONDON, MAY 31 (PTI): Health authorities across the United Kingdom on Tuesday issued updated guidance for anyone with symptoms to refrain from having sex as part of efforts to contain the spread of monkeypox. The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) issued the guidance along with authorities in Scotland, Northern Ireland and Wales as a further 71 cases were identified in England this week, taking the total in

the UK to 179. Under the guidance, people with monkeypox are also urged to avoid close contact with others until their lesions have healed and any scabs have dried off. “We are reassuring people that monkeypox does not usually spread easily between people, and the overall risk to the general public is low,” said Indianorigin Dr Giri Shankar, Director of Health Protection for Public Health Wales. “We are working with the UK Health Security

Agency, Public Health Scotland, and Public Health Agency Northern Ireland to develop this guidance, which will ensure that healthcare staff in Wales have the best and most upto-date knowledge on the management of monkeypox cases,” he said. People who have tested positive for the virus and their close contacts are being told to isolate at home for 21 days. The advice is to look out for any new rashes or lesions, which would

appear like spots, ulcers or blisters, on any part of their body. The latest guidance says that while there is currently no available evidence that monkeypox can be spread through sexual fluids, people confirmed to have the virus are advised to use condoms for eight weeks after infection as a precaution. The UKHSA said that although this advice applies to everyone, the majority of the cases identified to date have been among men who

are gay and bisexual. “So, we are asking these people in particular to be aware of the symptoms, particularly if they have recently had a new sexual partner,” the UKHSA said. The health authority said it has also purchased over 20,000 doses of a safe smallpox vaccine called Imvanex, which is being offered to identify close contacts of those diagnosed with monkeypox to reduce the risk of symptomatic infection and severe illness.

Nepal plane crash: Bodies brought for post-mortem

KATHMANDU, MAY 31 (PTI): The bodies of 22 people, including four Indians, killed in the plane crash in Nepal’s mountainous Mustang district on Sunday, have been brought to Kathmandu where the mortal remains would be handed over to their families after the post-mortem (PM) on Tuesday. The Canadian-built turboprop Twin Otter 9NAET plane was carrying four Indians, two Germans and 13 Nepali passengers, besides a three-member Nepali crew when it crashed minutes after taking off from the tourist city of Pokhara, officials said. Rescuers on Monday recovered 21 bodies from the wreckage site of the plane belonging to Tara Air. On Tuesday, the last body was also retrieved from the

wreckage site. According to Tribhuvan International Airport (TIA) General Manager Prem Nath Thakur, the bodies of 10 victims were brought on Monday evening and the bodies of the remaining 12 were brought here by a Nepal Army helicopter on Tuesday. All the bodies have been sent to the Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital for post-mortem examinations. The bodies will be handed to the families Oof the victims after the postmortem, the official said. The government has formed a five-member commission of inquiry headed by senior aeronautical engineer Ratish Chandra Lal Suman to find out the cause of the Tara Air plane crash, officials said. According to a pre-

liminary investigation carried out by the Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal (CAAN), bad weather was the reason behind the crash of the plane. The black box of the plane was also retrieved by a team of experienced international and national mountain guides from the crash site on Tuesday and it will be transported to Kathmandu. The black box, also known as the cockpit voice recorder, records radio transmissions and other sounds in the cockpit, such as conversations between the pilots, and engine noises. The modern planes have two black boxes that includes the flight data recorder which records more than 80 different types of information such as speed, altitude and direction, as well as pilot actions and performance of important systems. The black box could offer vital clues about the crash in which all 22 people on board were killed. Due to the geographical remoteness and adverse weather conditions, the search and the recovery mission were delayed. The plane was found scattered at an altitude of 4,200 metres, a four-hour uphill hike from the centre of Thasang Village Municipality.

KATHMANDU, MAY 31 (PTI): A team of experienced international and national mountain guides on Tuesday retrieved the black box of the Tara Air plane that crashed in Nepal’s mountainous Mustang district on Sunday, killing 22 people on board, including four Indians. Chief District Officer Netra Prasad Sharma of Mustang said that rescuers on Tuesday also recovered the last body from the wreckage site of the plane. According to Chief District Officer Sharma, the bodies of 10 people have already been sent to Kathmandu on Monday while the rest of the bodies have been shifted to Kobang from the crash site and are in the course of being airlifted to Kathmandu. The black box of the turboprop Twin Otter 9N-AET plane was recovered from the crash site by a team of experienced international and national mountain guides, The Himalayan Times reported. The black box will be transported to Kathmandu. The Tara Air plane was found in a crashed state on Monday morning, 19 hours after it went missing amidst bad weather.

DHAKA, MAY 31 (PTI): Bangladesh’s International Crimes Tribunal on Tuesday sentenced three persons to death for collaborating with the Pakistan Army and committing crimes against humanity during the country’s Liberation War in 1971. “One of the convicts is a fugitive and was tried in absentia but the other two faced the trial in person... they all were activists of Jamaat-e-Islami (party),” senior prosecutor Syed Haider Ali said. Jamaate-Islami was opposed to Bangladesh’s 1971 independence from Pakistan while its activists were the key-elements of Pakistan military’s auxiliary units like Razakar and Gestapolike Al-Badar forces. A three-member panel of the tribunal led by Justice Shahinur Islam pronounced the verdict ordering the convicts to be hanged by neck until their death. The convicts are in their late 60s and 70s and were known little to the public unlike the several other high-profile Jamaat leaders tried earlier while they carried out their atrocities as Razakars in northwestern Naogaon district. The prosecution law-

yers said of the three convicts, Rezaul Karim alias Montu, was on the run. Karim was the one who led a Razakar unit in the neighbourhood of his ancestral Naogaon district, while the other two convicts -- Shahid Mandol and Nazrul Islam -- were his accomplices. Montu was a student of northwestern Rajshahi University in 1971 and leader of Jamaat’s student wing Islami Chhatra Sangha. Under Bangladesh’s war crimes law, the convicts could appeal against the verdict in the apex Appellate Division of the Supreme Court. The counsels of the three convicts said they were preparing to challenge the judgment in consultation with their clients. Bangladesh in 2010 set up two high-powered tribunals, initiating the trial process to bring to justice the collaborators of the Pakistani Army which committed war crimes in the 1971 War of Liberation. The two tribunals have so far delivered judgments in 46 cases. The tribunals handed down death penalties in most of the cases, while in few cases the convicts were jailed “until death” in view of their old ages.

New Market thrash Barak FC 4-0 to lift 4th Kohima Super Cup

Correspondent

K O H I M A , M AY 3 1 (NPN): New Market FC lifted the 4th Kohima Super Cup by defeating Barak FC 4-0 in the final and walked away with a cash prize of Rs 1.80 lakhs and the bragging rights, here at IG Stadium on Tuesday. With this win, New Market has maintained its winning streak of no losses in this edition and also has won two out of the four tournaments organised by Kohima Town Club, the previous one being in 2018 right before the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic. The final match was played in front of a well filled stadium as fans of both the teams flocked in to cheer up and also extend their support to their players. New Market’s Haotingmang Thomsong, who also was the Player of The Tournament, was the first to net the ball in the 4th minute which quickly increased the pace of the game as Barak sensed the need to score to keep its dream alive. However, Letkhokai Kuki scored the second goal for New Market in 23rd

minute setting the bar higher for Barak to catch up in the first half. Barak’s star player and national team prospect, Baoringdao Boro, grinded hard to ensure that his team was not left too far behind. However, all his efforts were met with stiff resistance as New Market’s defenders gave little room for him to

breathe. The first half came to a disappointing end for Barak who had no idea that they were in for more surprises even in the later part of the game. Anxious to resume the remaining half, Barak wasted no time to rush back into the game in the second half, however it remained

largely under the control of New Market. One of the highest scorers of the edition, Nyithong Magh, scored the third goals for New Market FC in the 60th minute as Barak saw the dream of lifting the cup go farther with every passing second. And within 6 minutes of the third goal, New

Market’s Thejasetuo sealed the deal with the fourth goal. B a r a k ’s e f f o r t s t o even score a face saver was mercilessly deflected by New Market’s defence and the keeper. On the other hand, two impressive shots from New Market’s captain and one from the top scorer of the team got deflected from the

goal posts saving Barak from further embarrassment. The final whistle by the referee, Michael Dul, was met with a thunderous response as fans of both the teams embraced themselves for the inevitable. French Open: Coco Gauff beats Sloane 7th Nagaland Shooting C’ship held in Dimapur & Mokokchung Stephens, reaches first Grand Slam semis PARIS, MAY 31 (IANS): Coco Gauff prevailed in an all-American showdown on Tuesday at Roland Garros, defeating 2018 French Open finalist Sloane Stephens 7-5, 6-2 to reach the first Grand Slam semifinal of her career. The 18-year-old Gauff needed 90 minutes to oust 2017 US Open champion Stephens. Gauff ’s victory avenged her straight-sets loss to Stephens in their only previous meeting, at last year’s US Open. Gauff has yet to drop a set in the tournament, and indeed has not been pushed beyond an hour and a half in each of her five wins this fortnight. Gauff will face another first-time major semifinalist on Thursday when she takes on unseeded Italian Martina Trevisan for a

Coco Gauff

spot in the Roland Garros final. Trevisan ousted Leylah Fernandez earlier on Tuesday, winning her 10th straight match in the process. Stephens came into Roland Garros 0-4 on clay this season, but as she has done throughout her career, she leveled up her game at a major, especially in Paris. This was Stephens’s third Roland Gar ros quarterfinal, and she is up to 32 match-wins at the French

Open, which is her highest total of victories at any of the Grand Slams. However, Gauff has started her own record of excellence at the majors. By returning to the quarterfinals after her breakthrough run to that round last year, Gauff became the first woman to reach multiple Grand Slam quarterfinals before turning 19 since Nicole Vaidisova in 2007. Gauff set the tone early by taking charge in lengthy rallies, quickly breaking Stephens in the second game. H o w e v e r, G a u f f reclaimed momentum at 6-5, reaching triple set point after using outstanding defense to draw a swing volley error from Stephens. Two points later, Gauff clinched the set with a backhand winner.
