Check gate removal yet to impact market

Staff Reporter

DIMAPUR, JUN 9 (NPN): Public perception that dismantling of all check gates except inter-state as ordered by the state government , would result in reduction in prices of various items in the market has not happened which may indicate that either sellers don’t want to reduce prices or that multiple taxes are responsible for sky high price was a bogey. This aspect was revealed when Nagaland Post met a cross section of people including traders in Dimapur, Kohima and Mokokchung about the impact of the recent government ban order. It was found that some sellers of perishable items had marginally reduced prices by only around 25 to 50 paisa per kg following the removal of all unauthorised check gates. A trader dealing in per-

NSF ‘People’s Rally’ in Delhi on June 11

DIMAPUR, JUN 9 (NPN): Naga Students’ Federation (NSF) in collaboration with the Naga Students’ Union, Delhi would be organizing “People’s Rally” in New Delhi on June 11, under the banner “A Call for Peace”. In a press note, coordination committee on ‘Peoples’ Rally’ informed that the march would proceed from Mandi House and conclude at Jantar Mantar with solidarity messages from different Naga civil society organizations and well-wishers. It informed that the rally was aimed at raising the genuine concern and aspiration of the Nagas who were and continued to be “subjugated by the colonial powers.”

Police to act against unregistered vehicles DIMAPUR, JUN 9 (NPN): Dimapur police would be checking un-registered vehicles, vehicles registered outside Nagaland state, commercial vehicles and government condemned vehicles using the same government registration numbers. In a press release, Dimapur police PRO stated that many such vehicles were plying in Dimapur, Chümoukedima and Niuland districts in violation of the provisions of the Motor Vehicle Act, 1988. During the checking of all such vehicles, PRO said defaulters would be penalised. All owners/drivers of such vehicles have been advised to carry valid documents and adhere to the provisions of the said the Motor Vehicle Act.

come down because the rates were reduced by manufacturers across India. In Kohima, a resident told Nagaland Post that the prices remained the same as fixed by authorities. The same was the input gathered from residents of Mokokchung. The message from the residents of both towns was that authorities need to seriToll booths wear deserted look at New Field Check gate on Thursday. (NP) ously assess the pricing of ishable items such a fruits and vegetables maintained that the rates existing before the ban order and post-ban order had no impact on the prices of items except very marginally. However, there was some marked reduction in prices of construction items such as cement and MS Rods. Prior to the ban on multiple taxation at various check gates, the price of a 50 kg bag of cement used to be sold at Rs.510 and after the ban was imposed, the price

has come down to Rs.490 per bag. Similarly, MS Rod which used to be sold at Rs.80 to 85 per kg before the ban, has come down to Rs.70 to 75 after the ban. Before the ban prices of these items at Dimapur were costlier than at Khatkhati but after the ban, the prices prevailing at both Dimapur and Khatkhati are almost the same. A dealer at Dimapur claimed that the rates of cement and rod per kg have

various commodities sold in the market in order to determine the rate(s) to be fixed. This appears to be a lacuna of market price fixation. There are also reports that the collectors may be giving the slip or traversing the ban by carrying out their business through ingenuous means or acting like mobile check posts wherever transport trucks unload their (Cont’d on p-8) goods.

CNTC asks why prices haven’t come down Central Nagaland Tribes Council (CNTC) while lauding the state government for heeding to the long cry of common people by removing the check-gates, at the same time asked why prices of essential commodities have not yet come down. Further, CNTC noted that when fuel prices had also come down, prices of all goods were yet to come down, adding that there seemed to be no respite for the common man. Levying of taxes on transporting agencies and goodscarrying vehicles at multiple check gates was said to be the main reason of rise in prices. So, when all these gates had been removed, prices should also have come down accordingly though this had not been the case, it added. CNTC urged the State government to immediately look into this matter and relieve the common public from this menace.

RPP questions DoSE over recruitment of Hindi GTs DIMAPUR, JUN 9 (NPN): Rising People’s Party (RPP) has questioned Department of School Education (DoSE) why exam for recruiting Hindi graduate teachers should not be first held only for qualified indigenous inhabitants who are Hindi graduates/post-graduates with B Ed. Referring to the advertisement issued by the department on May 30 for recruitment of Hindi graduate teachers, the party in a press release claimed that there were a good many Nagas who had the requisite qualification, adding that, in case of shortfall after the initial recruitment, the all-

India open advertisement could have been issued by the department. Quoting the advertisement that states that “preference will be given to local candidates” and terming this as the crux of the problem plaguing the State, the party wanted to know how this preference would be worked out and whether there was a fixed quota reserved for the indigenous candidates. It alleged that preference was simply another word for “khushi-khushi” or departmental manipulation that was totally unacceptable. The party also asked what would be the mode of selection and, if written

examination and interview would be held, whether the results would be made public through print media for transparency. It further asked whether the correct answers would be published so as to help the candidates self-evaluate and compare with the marks published. Unless its recommendations were taken into consideration and the faulty advertisement was restructured, RPP warned that there was a high chance that aggrieved candidates from outside the State – candidates with higher marks scored but denied selection due to the preference policy – would drag DoSE to court.

DoSE was already plagued by so many litigations hampering the future of education in the State and avoiding another possible litigation should be considered, the party advised. Meanwhile, RPP said it was gratifying that DoSE had taken penal against 441 government teachers found engaged in proxy teaching, dual service and absenteeism, including terminating the service of 18 teachers. While these steps were appreciable, the party also urged the department to tackle the issues of “attachment” of teachers to VIP/ SDEOs/DEOs, principal director system, etc.

RS polls today: Stakes high for 16 seats across four States

NEW DELHI, JUN 9 (AGENCIES): Stakes are high for the 16 Rajya Sabha seats across four states, voting for which will be conducted on Friday. The outcome will determine the balance in the upper House of Parliament, where the ruling NDA does not command a majority, unlike in the Lok Sabha. Of the 57 Rajya Sabha seats that fell vacant, 41 candidates in Uttar Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Bihar, Andhra Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Odisha, Chhattisgarh, Punjab, Telangana, Jharkhand and Uttarakhand were declared elected unopposed last Friday. However, elections will be held for 16 seats of Haryana, Rajasthan, Maharashtra and Karnataka on Friday as the number of candidates exceeds the seats going to the polls. An exciting day could be in store, as parties, wary of poaching and cross voting, are leaving nothing to chances. Rajasthan: Congress has fielded Mukul Wasnik, Pramod Tiwari and Randeep Surjewala for the polls from Rajasthan, while the BJP has chosen as its official candidate former minister Ghanshyam Tiwari. The Congress and the BJP are set to comfortably win two and one seats, respectively. But Media baron Subhash Chandra has made the contest interesting by entering the fray as a BJPbacked independent candidate. Congress accused the BJP of horse-trading attempts and had shifted its MLAs to a resort in Udaipur on June 2. The BJP also shifted its MLAs to a hotel on the outskirts of Jaipur

on June 6 for a “training camp”. Amid allegations of horse trading, Subhash Chandra has increased worries of the ruling party by claiming that eight MLAs will cross vote in his favour to hand him a victory. The Congress currently has 108 legislators in the 200-member state assembly and needs 123 votes to win three seats. The Bharatiya Tribal Party (BTP) with two MLAs has extended support to it. The Congress is also claiming the support of 13 Independents and one Rashtriya Lok Dal MLA, who is currently a state minister. On the other hand, the BJP has 71 MLAs. After the victory of its party candidate, BJP will be left with 30 surplus votes, which will go to Subhash Chandra. Three MLAs of the Rashtriya Loktantrik Party (RLP) too have extended support to Chandra, who needs eight more seats to win the elections. Maharashtra: In a setback to chief minister Uddhav Thackeray and the MVA alliance, a special court in Mumbai rejected the pleas of Maharashtra minister Nawab Malik and former minister Anil Deshmukh seeking a day’s

bail to vote in Friday’s Rajya Sabha elections. Both have now moved Bombay HC, and a hearing is scheduled for Friday morning. There are seven candidates in the fray for the six seats, that makes the contest interesting and every vote crucial. Union minister Piyush Goyal, Anil Bonde, Dhananjay Mahadik (BJP), Praful Patel (NCP), Sanjay Raut and Sanjay Pawar (Shiv Sena) and Imran Pratapgarhi (Congress) are in fray for the six seats. The contest is for the sixth seat- between Mahadik and Pawar- for which both MVA parties and BJP are banking on the 25 additional votes of smaller parties and independents. Haryana: The Haryana Congress MLAs have left for a resort in Chattisgarh’s Raipur and are expected to reach Chandigarh just hours before the polling for the Rajya Sabha elections begins on Friday, sources said. Meanwhile, the ruling BJP-JJP MLAs remain lodged at a resort in Chandigarh for the second day as the contest for one of the two seats going to the polls sharpened. The BJP has fielded former Minister Krishan Lal Panwar while Ajay Maken is the Congress nominee. While the BJP has sufficient votes to win one seat, the contest has spiced up for the second seat with entry of media baron Kartikeya Sharma, an Independent candidate who is backed by the BJP-JJP combine. He is also supported by Independents and Gopal Kanda, lone MLA of the Haryana Lokhit Party. (Cont’d on p-8)

NEW DELHI, JUN 9 (PTI/AGENCIES): The single-day rise in new coronavirus infections in the country was recorded over 7,000 after 99 days, registering nearly 40 per cent jump in daily cases, while the daily positivity rate crossed 2 per cent after 111 days, the Union Health Ministry said on Thursday. A total of 7,240 infections were recorded in a span of 24 hours taking India’s total tally of COVID-19 cases to 4,31,97,522, while the death toll has climbed to 5,24,723 with eight fresh fatalities, data updated at 8 am by the ministry stated.

States asked to ramp up testing, genome sequencing Centre writes to States

Centre on Thursday advised all states to maintain a strict watch, take pre-emptive measures and increase testing to control any emerging spread of Covid infection. Centre has asked States not lower their guard and continue working towards building on progress made thus far to bring pandemic situation under

control. It also advised States to continue implementation and monitoring of necessary measures for prompt and effective management of Covid-19 and to ensure compliance with advisories issued by the Health ministry. Out of the total 7,240 new cases in the last 24 hours, 81% of cases have been reported from four states - Maharashtra, Delhi, Kerala and Karnataka. “Given the significance of adequate testing in early identification of cases and providing an accurate picture of the level of infection spread, it is required that states/UTs must ensure

high level of testing in all such areas that are reporting new cases/cluster of cases,” Union Health Secretary Rajesh Bhushan said. The Centre has also asked the states to enhance monitoring of Influenza like Illness (ILI) in all health facilities on a regular basis for detecting early warning signals of infection spread. “Genome sequencing of prescribed samples of international passengers as well as collection of samples from Sentinel sites and local cluster of new Covid cases is equally important. Such samples must be sent promptly,” Centre said.

ZB (AMN) rejects claim of endorsing ‘Agreed Position’ Presidential poll on July 18, result on July 21 DIMAPUR, JUN 9 (NPN): Zeliangrong Baudi (Assam, Manipur, Nagaland) has rejected the claim of Zeliangrong civil society organisations of Assam, Manipur and Nagaland endorsing the “Agreed Position”, which was signed between the Working Committee (WC) of the NNPGs and Government of India on November 17, 2017. In a joint statement, ZB(AMN) president Akhang Kamei, ZB(N) president CR Zeliang and ZB (A) president Pauheu stated that the recent consultative meeting of Zeliangrong CSOs with NNPGs held in Dimapur on June 7, 2022 and “its subsequent press statement

published by WC does not carry or represent the voice of Zeliangrong people.” They expressed regret that “some of our Zeliangrong CSOs”, who attended the meeting, was “assumed to have endorsed and supported the Working Committee of NNPGs ‘Agreed position’ as reflected in medias.” They said that the Zeliangrong people, since the inception of “Indo-Naga” political talk, neither endorsed, supported nor subscribed to any particular party or faction till date. The Baudis said it was their “constant view” that unity and collective effort of all Nagas was prerogative to finding pragmatic Naga so-

lution. They said they have reiterated their stand time and again of “our peoples’ support for early and inclusive settlement of the protracted Naga political issues while keeping alongside the Zeliangrong political aspiration and movement intact.” Further, the Baudi said that the “supposed endorsement and support of Zeliangrong to NNPGs ‘Agreed Position’ and its subsequent status paper as reflected contradicts the political outlook of the Zeliangrong people.” ZB (AMN) stated that its central executive council neither discussed nor authorised any of its frontal organizations on the issue. In this regard, the Bau-

di cautioned Zeliangrong individual/s or CSOs to refrain from “making/giving any undue press statement” that could confuse, disturb or create undesirable implication “at this stage when the progress of Indo-Naga” talk was at its crucial momentum for final settlement.” Baudi further clarified that member participants of Zeliangrong CSOs of the said consultative meeting were not officially commissioned to represent the people nor did they carry the voice of the Zeliangrong people on the Naga political issues. “Therefore, the press statement is devoid of any implied or deduced meaning,” the Baudi stated.

NEW DELHI, JUN 9 (PTI): Election for the next President of India will be held on July 18 in which 4,809 electors comprising MPs and MLAs will vote to elect incumbent Ram Nath Kovind’s successor, the Election Commission announced on Thursday. Announcing the poll schedule, Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar said that the term of President Ram Nath Kovind is coming to end on July 24. As per the poll schedule, notification for the President election will be issued on June 15 and the last day of filing nomination will be June 29. Scrutiny of nomination papers will be held on June 30 and last day of

withdrawal of nomination papers will be July 2. Polling, if required, will be held on July 18 and counting will take place on July 21. Kumar said that no political party will be allowed to issue any kind of whip. Voting for presidential election will take place in Parliament and the premises of state assemblies, while Rajya Sabha Secretary-General will be the returning officer. Normally, MPs cast their vote in Parliament and MLAs in their respective state assemblies. Total 776 MPs and 4033 MLAs will vote. Total value of votes is 10,86,431. Value of votes of MLAs is 5,43,231 and MPs are 5,43,200.

Meanwhile, setting in motion the process for the 16th presidential election, EC said anyone desiring to contest would need 50 electors as proposers and 50 others as seconders -- a move aimed at weeding out nonserious candidates in these polls that once saw nominations getting rejected for 36 out of total 37 candidates. Besides, the candidate would need to deposit an amount of Rs 15,000 as security. Among other criteria, the security deposit was increased from Rs 2,500 to Rs 15,000 in 1997, when the total numbers of proposers and seconders were also increased from 10 each earlier. K Y M C

Village chief assassinated over family feud: Manipur police Correspondent IMPHAL, JUN 9: Manipur police on Thursday said the recent murder of chief of Naphai village Jilhem Khongsai in Kangpokpi district was not linked to a ban imposed on poppy cultivation even it arrested three suspects on the night of June 6 last. Saikul police investigating into the case arrested the three suspects around 4.30 pm on Wednesday and confiscated three SBBL guns from their possessions. The arrested suspects were identified as Jamlai Khongsai (40), Thangkhohao Khongsai (37) and Paomang Khongsai (36), all residents of Naphai village. Among them, Jamlai Khongsai is a cadre of the Kuki National Army (KLA), an armed group under suspension of operation truce with the government, the police said. The police produced them in the court of duty magistrate of Kangpokpi district today and took a 10-day police remand. The murder of the chief has nothing to do with a notification he had issued banning poppy cultivation practice in his area, additional DGP (law & order and training) Clay Khongsai told reporters today. He said that preliminary statements of the three suspects suggested that the killing of the village chief was linked to the race for post of the chief of the village, he said. The deceased Jilhem Khongsai was not a full time chief of the village.

He looked after the charge of the chief as the caretaker after the death of his father who was the chief of the village. The three suspects are the cousins of the deceased Jilhem Khongsai who were competing for the post of the chief since their father expired, he said “The main motive would be a family feud. There was a dispute over the successor after the chief of the Naphai village died,” Khongsai said. He, however, added that the actual motive behind the assassination will be known only after a thorough investigation. The additional DGP said that the police were compelled to disclose this as there were speculations that the killing of the village chief was linked to the ban on poppy cultivation he imposed to show solidarity to the government’s war on drugs. He said that considering the sensitive nature of the case, Saikul police station is closely considering all angles and motives behind the crime and an intensive investigation was in progress. The family members of the deceased chief have expressed suspicion of the killing linked to a notification issued by the deceased chief prohibiting poppy cultivation in his area. Meanwhile, the dead body of the chief is lying at RIMS morgue after necessary postmortem as family members refused to accept it while pressing to book the culprits.

Vehicle speed limit restricted to 40-km per hr in Kaziranga

GUWAHATI, JUN 9 (PTI): The Kaziranga National Park authorities have fixed a maximum speed limit of 40 km per hour for vehicles in the sanctuary with an objective to avoid wildlife deaths due to accidents and allow free movement of animals, an official said on Thursday. Six sensor-based cameras have been installed in nine designated animal corridors of the park, stretching from Rengali to Borjuri, in Assam to detect the speed of vehicles, he said. The cameras have been installed along the National Highway 37 that passes along the southern boundaries of the Kaziranga National Park, the home of the famous one-horned rhinos, and these will become operational from Friday, Eastern Assam Wildlife Division’s DFO Ramesh Gogoi said. The cameras are equipped with automatic number plate recognising with radar for the determination of speed, the divisional forest officer said. The authorities used to regulate vehicle speed limit during floods in Assam as animals come near the NH 37 in search of dry land with many crossing the road to reach highlands. K Y M C

and tribal faith and culture (directorates of library and museum). His old portfolio welfare of plain tribes and backward classes has been rechristened as tribal welfare department. Ashok Singhal will hold housing and urban affairs and irrigation instead of Guwahati development, urban development including town and country planning and irrigation, the communique said. Another minister Jogen Mohan has been moved out of the mines and minerals departmen and he will now be in charge of revenue and disaster management and hills area development. Sarma’s close aide Pijush Hazarika has been awarded with the new social justice and empowerment department, while retaining all his old portfolios of water resources, information and public relations and parliament affairs. Bimal Bora lost three of the four departments that he was in charge of but received a new one. He was removed from sports and youth welfare, power and tourism and allotted industries, commerce and public enterprises, it said.

There has been no change in the portfolios of Urkhao Gwra Brahma who continues to be minister for handloom and textile, soil conservation and Bodoland welfare, Keshab Mahanta the minister for health and family welfare, medical education and research, science and technology and information technology and Sanjoy Kishan who holds charge of welfare of tea tribes and labour welfare, the communique added. Sarma took over as chief minister of Assam on May 10 last year after BJP returned to power in the assembly elections for the second consecutive term. With the two new inductees, the BJP-led Assam government at present has 16 cabinet ministers and there is no one as minister of state. As per the 91st amendment of the Constitution in 2003, the total number of ministers, including the chief minister, in a state should not exceed 15 per cent of the total number of members of the Legislative Assembly. As Assam Assembly has a strength of 126 MLAs, a maximum of 19 ministers can function at a time.

SHILLONG, JUNE 9: At least four people, including three from a family, and a minor boy, were buried alive while two others were critically injured in two separate incidents of landslides triggered by pre-monsoon showers in Meghalaya’s Garo Hills region, an official said on Thursday. The heavy downpours also caused unprecedented floods and washed away three to four wooden bridges connecting Jijika to Megua at South Garo hills district. Two more bridges Morop Bazaar and Makalgonchu - connecting Kherapara to Gambegre PWD road in West Garo Hills district were also washed away due to rise of water level in the Bandra River.

A family of five was asleep, when a massive landslide triggered by heavy rain washed away their house in the wee hours of Thursday at Jebalgre village under Gambegre Block of West Garo Hills district. “A woman, identified as Pritish Marak, along with her son, Almost Marak, and daughter, Aianbe Marak, were buried alive in the incident. A man identified as Sengrik Sangma, and his son, Thobias Marak, survived the tragedy and are in critical condition in a hospital,” a police official said. Police said a two-anda-half-year-old child Tanush Hajong lost his life when their house was destroyed due to a landslide in Samati village of Betasing block in South West Garo Hills district.

In Ampati, the district headquarters of South West Garo Hills, 26 villages have been affected due to flash flood. Chief Minister, Conrad K Sangma said that the flood situation in Garo Hills is quite serious and the water levels are rising with continuous rain. “The administration has been put on full alert. Deputy Commissioners of South West Garo Hills, West Garo Hills and South Garo Hills are continuously monitoring the situation on the ground,” he said. Sangma said that Deputy Commissioners in the Garo Hills region have been instructed to release the exgratia amount to the affected families immediately. The Chief Minister said he would visit Garo Hills on Friday to take stock of the flood situation. “The government is keeping a watch closely on the situation. These are natural calamities and it is not something we can do to stop but we need to ensure that minimum inconvenience is caused to the people and whatever support is required will be given by the government,” Sangma assured. The India Meteorological Department has issued a red alert for Meghalaya, Assam and Arunachal Pradesh, warning of heavy rainfall over the next few days.

NEW DELHI, JUN 9 (PTI): The monsoon is progressing normally and is likely to reach Maharashtra in the next two days, the India Meteorological Department said on Thursday. The MeT office has also warned of isolated extremely heavy rainfall (more than 204.5 mm) in Ar unachal Pradesh on June 10-11, and Assam and Meghalaya during the next five days. The monsoon accounts for around 70 per cent of the country’s annual rainfall and is considered the lifeline of its agriculture-based economy. Senior IMD scientist R K Jenamani said monsoon touched the Kerala coast on May 29 and covered south and central Arabian Sea, Kerala, parts of Karnataka and Tamil Nadu and the entire northeast between May 31 and June 7. “There is no delay in the progress of the monsoon. It is likely to reach Maharashtra in the next two days and cover Mumbai in the subsequent two days,” he told reporters here, dismissing reports that its progress had slowed down. “We have strong monsoon features -- there are strong winds and clouds have started developing -for the next two days,” he added. The scientist said conditions are favourable for the further advance of monsoon over Goa and some

GUWAHATI/SILCHAR, JUN 9 (PTI): The Gauhati High Court has issued notices to railway authorities for allegedly not adhering to safety norms while constructing a broad-gauge line from Lumding to Silchar in Assam. Hearing a public interest litigation filed by the All Barak Youth Students Association, a division bench comprising Chief Justice (Acting) N Kotiswar Singh and Justice Soumitra Saikia gave four weeks to the respondents – the Railway Ministry, Railway Board and Northeast Frontier Railway – to reply to the notices. The petition stated that work on conversion of metre-gauge to broad-gauge to connect with Barak Valley, Tripura, Mizoram and Manipur, was sanctioned in 1996-97, and declared a national project in 2004. Passenger train services started on the broad-gauge track from November 21, 2015. The PIL claimed that the principal director of audit in his Theme Based Audit Report during the course of the conversion work had warned the railway authorities that construction commenced without adequate geo-technical investigation. The project shall be derailed due to faulty planning and failure to visualise the soil strata behaviour on the part of the Railways, the pe-

more parts of Maharashtra, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu in the next two days. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) had last month said the southwest monsoon will be normal and quantitatively be 103 per cent of the 50-year average of 87 cm rainfall received in the entire season. It will be the seventh consecutive year when the country would receive normal rainfall during the Juneto-September period. Jenamani said extremely heavy rainfall is predicted over Arunachal Pradesh, Assam and Meghalaya over the next few days. Assam was hit by a wave of floods last month. Intense pre-monsoon rain and flooding caused massive damage to the state’s infrastructure, including bridges, roads and railway tracks. Asked if the monsoon will reach Delhi-NCR and other parts of northwest India around the usual date, Jenamani said it was too early to say anything. Last year, the IMD had forecast that the monsoon would arrive in Delhi nearly two weeks before its usual date (June 27). However, it reached the capital and neighboring areas only on July 13, making it the most delayed in 19 years. The monsoon had entered a “break” phase and there was virtually no progress from June 20 to July 8.

OPINION/EDITORIAL

Nagaland Post VOL. XXXII NO. 184 DIMAPUR, FRIDAY, JUNE 10, 2022

Fraud of the decade

O

ne of the most scandalous deal of the decades has been the virtual sell out of Nagaland House Commercial Complex at Kolkata through a one-sided lease agreement executed in 1982. Nagaland House Commercial Complex at Kolkata’s Shakespeare Sarani, earlier known as Theatre Road, is located at among the most prime location of the metro city with the rented premises spread over an area of around 1,05,000 square feet, valued approximately at around Rs.300 crore. The government of Nagaland had bought the property from an erstwhile royal member of Nepal. The genesis of the infamous deal began when the then Naga National Democratic Party(NNDP) government signed a lease agreement with Engineers India Pvt Ltd(EIPL) Calcutta in 1982 (now Civil Engineers Enterprises Pvt.Ltd) for construction project. EIPL was a venture started by Shyamalendu Ghosal, a retired engineer of the government of Nagaland and reportedly close with the then political rulers. The Nagaland House complex was a turnkey project under Development Authority of Nagaland (DAN). As per the narrative description of the project, it was proposed to be a commercial-cum-guest House complex, comprising of an 11 storied office building of 12,764 square meters, a four storied Nursing Home of 832 square metres, a six-storied VIP guest house of Nagaland government, a three storied office building of Nagaland government and a four-storied staff quarters of Nagaland government. The total area rented for the premises is 1,05,000 sq. ft at the heart of Calcutta. Archtech Consultants Pvt.Ltd, also floated by the same director of EIPL(now CEEPL) had prepared the project, work started in 1979 and Phase-I was to be completed in September 1984 (phase I) and Phase-II was to be completed by May 1988. However, midway during construction, the state government “ran out of money”. The contractor, M/s EIPL then offered a sugar coated pill to the state government(NNDP) -that he can arrange loan to complete the project from the State Bank of India(SBI). However, the bitter pill inside, was that the Bank would only provide the loan if he was given power of attorney of the property through a lease deed. The EIPL’s advocate prepared the lease agreement for both the firm and the state government that was signed in 1982 for the entire property for a period of 20 years. The one-sided sell out lease is revealed by the clauses such as- the lessee(EIPL) will enjoy 1500 sq. ft space free of rent; use the premises for business purpose/ sublet without any reference to the Lessor; allow the Lessee to make alterations, extensions, etc. ; allow the Lessee to use entire complex premises as collateral security to Public Financial Institutes/Agencies, National Banks and that the lease shall be extended for another 20 years after expiry of the first deed. When CEEPL(earlier EIPL) wanted to renew the lease under the West Bengal Tenancy Act but the NPF government in 2018 refused since the Act does not cover properties of state and central government. The present NDPP-led UDA coalition government achieved a breakthrough when the High Court rejected the plea from CEEPL and referred the case for arbitration. Hopefully, the arbitration will ensure that sale deed becomes lease deed and biggest fraud will restore ownership of the Kolkata Nagaland House Complex back to Nagaland.

DailyDevotion Then What’s Next To Do?

Everyone who asks receives… —Luke 11:10

Ask if you have not received. There is nothing more difficult than asking. We will have yearnings and desires for certain things, and even suffer as a result of their going unfulfilled, but not until we are at the limit of desperation will we ask. It is the sense of not being spiritually real that causes us to ask. Have you ever asked out of the depths of your total insufficiency and poverty? “If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God…” (James 1:5), but be sure that you do lack wisdom before you ask. You cannot bring yourself to the point of spiritual reality anytime you choose. The best thing to do, once you realize you are not spiritually real, is to ask God for the Holy Spirit, basing your request on the promise of Jesus Christ (see Luke 11:13). The Holy Spirit is the one who makes everything that Jesus did for you real in your life. “Everyone who asks receives….” This does not mean that you will not get if you do not ask, but it means that until you come to the point of asking, you will not receive from God (see Matthew 5:45). To be able to receive means that you have to come into the relationship of a child of God, and then you comprehend and appreciate mentally, morally, and with spiritual understanding, that these things come from God. “If any of you lacks wisdom….” If you realize that you are lacking, it is because you have come in contact with spiritual reality— do not put the blinders of reason on again. The word ask actually means “beg.” Some people are poor enough to be interested in their poverty, and some of us are poor enough spiritually to show our interest. Yet we will never receive if we ask with a certain result in mind, because we are asking out of our lust, not out of our poverty. A pauper does not ask out of any reason other than the completely hopeless and painful condition of his poverty. He is not ashamed to beg— blessed are the paupers in spirit (see Matthew 5:3).

Post-mortem

India draws ire not only of Arab world, but others too

W

ords we use are important especially of the leaders. Words add value if and when is translated on ground and when it becomes concrete more value is added. Blabbering in summits, press meets, conferences and conveniently eulogizing and invoking plurality of cultures, mutual coexistence, democratic principles, rule of law and freedom of speech would not suffice, but only if they become real in day-to-day life of every citizen. We live in a world of information technology in which social media plays the most important role. World is well-connected in both visà-vis fake-news and genuine news – but sifting the truth is important. Truth will always triumph, but when – nonetheless pursue. Fake narratives have touched its peak and reached its momentum for the last few years. Attacks on the minorities, desecrating their worship places, passing derogatory comments of the founders and their Scriptures have been going on under

BJP-ruled Centre as well as BJP-ruled state governments. This has become new normal. At last, on the 5th of June, 2022, BJP, the far-right Hindu fundamentalist party which rules the government at the Centre, expelled Navin Kumar Jindal, head of the media cell of its Delhi unit and suspended one of its national spokespersons Nupur Sharma for making controversial remarks about Prophet Mohammad. It was a sudden move of BJP. How come! Though late, the BJP at the helm of affairs has been forced to act instantaneously. What could perhaps be the reasons? To appease and to defuse the crisis “BJP respects all religions. It strongly denounces insult of any religious personalities of any religion”. Further, BJP sources told TOI that action was taken at the instance of the “top tier” leadership that does not go well with the party’s focus on development and the PM Modi’s “sabka saath, sabka vikas” agenda. “Strong action taken against these individuals” in their parlance means ‘suspension’ The

party brass of BJP seemed to have been annoyed with the controversy breaking out amid the celebrations of the third anniversary of the Modi government’s second term at the Centre. What made the BJP government at the Centre and the party to come down or to take U-turn? It is not due to domestic pressure, but more to economic and political enjoined with India’s image overseas. For example, over 6.5 million Indians live and work in Gulf countries. Qatar is one of the largest suppliers of Gas to India. Close to 40% of India’s gas supplies come from Qatar. India has strong trade relations with many Gulf countries. In 202021 India’s trade with GCC countries was over $87 billion. Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Qatar, Oman, Kuwait and the UAE make up the GCC. 2020-21 India-GCC trade grew by 27% from previous year. Despite noted public servant and renowned intellectuals writing letters to PM Modi in recent times to curb hate speeches and crimes against minorities that seemed

to have been ignored, but in this case, GOI and BJP acted swiftly, because on the one hand more than 15 countries have expressed their anger and condemnation against India not only in the Arab world, but also other countries located in different parts of the world over controversial remark made against Prophet Mohammad by the BJP spokespersons, while on the other, Qatar sought for a public apology and condemnation from the Indian government as it summoned India’s ambassador Deepak Mittal to register a strong protest over the remarks against the Prophet. Kwait and Iran also lodged a protest with the Indian government with the former demanding a public apology. Describing the comments as a war against every Muslim in the world, the Grand Mufti of Oman called upon all Muslims to “rise as one nation”. The comments have irked the Arab world. Over and above, India’s biggest problem came from Qatar an important Gulf

partner currently hosting VicePresident Venkaiah Naidu. A ‘Boycott India’ and call for boycott of Indian products campaign trended on social media as Naidu arrived in Doha. Despite apologies and clarifications from BJP functionaries pointing to “fringe elements” explaining that their statements that do not represent the views of the Indian government. However, Qatar’s deputy foreign minister summoned the Indian ambassador to convey its “total rejection and condemnation” of the controversial remarks to India. “Noting that State of Qatar is expecting a public apology and immediate condemnation of these remarks from the GOI pointing that allowing such Islamophobic remarks to continue without punishment, constitutes, a grave danger to the protection of human rights and may lead to further prejudice and marginalization, which will create a cycle of violence and hate” said the Qatar foreign ministry in a statement adding more than two billion Mus-

lims across the world followed the Prophet and his message of peace, understanding and tolerance. Indian embassy in its response: “In line with our civilizational heritage and strong cultural traditions of unity in diversity Government of India accords the highest respect to all religions. Strong action has already been taken against those who made the derogatory remarks.” People are watching. Actions ought to be reflected concretely on ground. BJP and GOI should go beyond mere tokenism. A word of caution and a reminder to BJP and GOI that “We live in an interdependent and globalized world” – any happening anywhere near or remote is bound to have ripple effects. Concerned political parties and citizens should strive to put an end to new forms of nationalism, populism and fundamentalism. Respect to Constitution, democracy, rule of law and human rights that guarantees freedom of religion and expression be respected. Dr. I. John Mohan Razu Professor of Social Ethics

He had a natural way with words, using ambiguity and the double entendre to full effect. And his long and often dramatic pauses were calculated to drive home points with devastating effect. It is, however, an inescapable truth that as political communications were reshaped by technology, Vajpayee was more and more at sea. He may have moved an entire nation with his dramatic resignation speech in the Lok Sabha at the conclusion of his 13-day premiership in 1996 — the first occasion parliamentary proceedings were telecast live — but the truth is that he was never at ease with television. His long pauses and thoughtful delivery that worked magic before large crowds didn’t quite seem the same when he was speaking just for the cameras. Vajpayee, it would seem, never quite grasped that the electronic media demanded short, snappy and instant intentions. His style was more languid. He shunned instant reactions and preferred sleeping over an issue to instant commentary — a demand

of modern communications. It is fortunate that his political career came to an end by the time social media arrived on the scene because he hated the idea of quick-fix politics. The Bharatiya Janata Party has evolved since the time Vajpayee walked into the sunset. Its public communication skills are the envy of its political competitors, and it has acquired a reputation of unleashing a reserve army of ‘trolls’ when the occasions demanded. Despite the compulsions of being the ruling party at the Centre, the BJP has mastered the art of getting its message across instantly. Unfortunately, had these social media skills been in evidence a fortnight or so ago, the almighty controversy over the allegedly antiIslamic comments of its spokesperson, Nupur Sharma, would have been a minor storm in a teacup. The BJP seems to have erred on a number of counts. First, once it was clear that the spokesperson’s comments on a phase in the Prophet’s life were likely to trigger a controversy, the BJP should have got her to immediately issue a communication withdrawing her remarks and apologising for any offence. This was done subsequently, but only after it was apparent that controversy had acquired a life of its own. Second, the party should

have simultaneously withdrawn her as a spokesperson for the foreseeable future. This, again, was done too late. While withdrawing her credentials as an official spokesperson may seem excessively harsh on someone who was reacting to an unending series of anti-Hindu provocations, it would have been tactically prudent for a larger objective — to prevent an ugly controversy from spilling over into street protests. The BJP was guilty of taking its eye off the ball and being slow to respond. The prevarication was the result of the perception that Sharma hadn’t said anything that couldn’t be substantiated. Also, no one had anticipated that the anger over Sharma’s comments would escalate into a pan-Islamic issue and create diplomatic complications for India. A prompt reaction would have contained the damage substantially and, at best, confined it to the social media space. The larger question, however, remains and is behind the outpouring of sympathy for Sharma from the broader BJP ecosystem. Throughout the course of the ongoing dispute over the Gyanvapi mosque in Varanasi and the chance discovery of an old shivling within the premises, there has been an unending spate of spiteful comments in the social media and elsewhere that were calculated to mock

Hindu beliefs. Those responsible for these hurtful remarks weren’t all Muslims. A large share of the responsibility vests with those who are nominally Hindus or committed secularists. They have rebuffed attempts to censure them by falling back on constitutional provisions of free speech which — in theory, at least — includes the right to offend, but within limits. Where the proverbial lakshman rekha of free speech is situated is, of course, a matter of debate and naturally depends on the prevailing sociopolitical climate and the mood of the judiciary. In another country, Sharma’s observations may have, at best, raised eyebrows but no more. In India, however, they were at the centre of a political storm and included threats to the life of the former BJP spokesperson. These sharp differences over the acceptable bounds of causing offence will, I fear, persist in India. This country is a minefield of conflicting sensitivities and a political culture of contrived protests. Even the best desire to play safe can easily come unstuck, as frequently happens with films, books and works of art. Even academic studies are not free from possible charges of hurtful conduct, as the likes of Wendy Doniger discovered. It is, therefore, no surprise that, unlike the West, India’s public universities shun the organ-

ised study of theology. For those involved in public life, the safest course to me is to very strictly follow this evasiveness. Anything remotely theological in scope should be avoided, not least because there isn’t any last word on the subject and a multitude of conflicting versions. For example, the question of cow sacrifice and feasting on beef in ancient India has preoccupied some historians. The question also routinely features in contemporary debates on cow slaughter. To negotiate this tangle, it is best to focus on the fact that in today’s India, the cow is venerated by most Hindus. The issue of cow slaughter should proceed from that assumption and not from ancient practices. Likewise, in debating today’s Islamist upsurge, the important thing is not to debate whether or not it has a basis in the religious texts. It is more prudent to debate its contemporary political ramifications and view it as an aspect of political conflict. That way the offence is confined to politics and doesn’t intrude into the religious space where prickliness is the norm. The best course, needless to say, is in not being explicit on every subject. If that means bad TV, there is Vajpayee as the shining role model. Swapan Dasgupta (As published in Telegraph India)

Naga flag, constitution invokes pride and hope of Naga people

S

ince 1947 the Naga National Council (NNC) under the leadership of Angami Zapu Phizo, declared Naga country as Independent state on August 14, 1947. The NNC resolved to establish a “Sovereign Naga State” and conducted a ‘Referendum’ in 1951, in which 99.9 percent supported an ‘Independent’ Nagaland. 75 years ago, the Naga People declared Independence, proclaiming in one voice that we are free to determine our own destiny and carry out the work of Self-governance. Throughout our history the Naga flag has steadfastly served as an emblem of the Naga Nation. Naga people should pledge our allegiance to the banner that has served as a guiding symbol on our Naga Nation journey. The Naga flag and Constitution persists as a powerful representation of freedom and opportunity with hands over hearts. Nagas of all background and beliefs have long saluted and honored it’s legacy. Let us call on each other to remember our obligation to the Naga Nation for which it stands and carry forward the unwavering optimism that defines us. Naga Nation endures because of the courage of our forefathers and the present Naga National workers who laid their life for the cause of the

Naga people. Wherever the Naga flag rise and flies, it’s message is clear, we rise and fall together, as one Nation and one people because the Naga flag and Constitution invokes pride and hope of the Naga people in search of brighter tomorrow for the younger generation, as it has embodied our ideals and sustained our Nation. NSCN affirmed with No talk without Naga Flag and Constitution adopt resolution at at the emergency meeting is highly appreciated and acknowledged by the Lotha Public Organization (LPO) and Lothas in general because without these two issue, the Naga political movement for self-determination will be Incoherent. At this crucial time, every Naga house must hoist the Naga National flag at this critical period of Naga political history. The Naga need to create common ground and conducive environment where Naga from every walks of lives across the borders land came and play together with acceptance and unison voice to live as one family one people one Nation will definitely bring Naga more closer and understanding towards rebuilding and salvation of our Naga Nation. Considering the pulse of the people in Nagaland the criticism on Naga political

settlement should stop within our own families. Rather it would be better to serve ultimatum to Prime Minister of India and Home minister to seek clarification on the agreement between the NSCN and GoI through a negotiated agreed from both side that, The talk shall be without any condition from both side, The talk shall be at the highest level (PM level) and the talk shall be in the third countries (outside India). The question is that, whether GoI is adhering to this agreement? Did the GoI invited the NSCN leaders to engaged the talk at the Prime minister level as per the negotiated settlement agreement with the NSCN to bring Indo-Naga Political settlement. Dealing the Indo-Naga political issue in the level of interlocutor it will certainly be another “Pandora’s box”. The Naga flag can’t be reduced to cultural symbol of identity, because the Naga struggle is political. Naga flag is our National identity and life for which more than three lakhs of Naga people have laid down their precious lives in defense of our people rights. Without flag it is tantamount to be called another betrayal accord of the modern civilization. The Naga movement is not about cultural things,

GoI shouldn’t play around with the Naga people as the Naga issue is a political negotiations, not a cultural negotiations. Naga people should not forget THE 3RD NAGA CONSULTATIVE MEETING held on May 6.10.2002 wherein the declaration was pronounced by seventy three (73) Naga delegates at Bangkok, Thailand to strengthen the peace strategy and solemnly declared to fully support the ongoing political negotiations between the GoI and the NSCN and endorsed the NAGA HOHO, the CHURCH and Mass- based organization to continue their leadership of the ongoing peace process and make a Clarion call to all Nagas to come forward to support and participate in the peace process so that the Indo-Naga political problem may be solved. As a matter of fact the Naga solution lies with the Nagas but not with the Indian. Collective Naga people’s voice is supreme and Nagas need to continue voicing out their rights (historical, political and God’s given rights). The Naga rights for recognition of our flag and Constitution for protection of Naga rights, cultural practices, identity is imperative if we want an honourable and acceptable solution the solution must be based on the

Framework agreement (FA) as stated clearly “Sharing the sovereign power and provide for an enduring inclusive new relationship of peaceful coexistence of the two entities”. Ostensibly if the GoI cling on these Framework Agreement both the side will explore a lasting peace and established in the field of security point of view as two entities. The Naga struggle should not end with the mercy of GoI, Naga leaders who do not understand about the Naga situation and reality of Naga freedom struggle and yet speak as if they were the master. They barked as if they were the Indian authorities. When the outsider can give a bold statement on Naga political issue Assam chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said quote “ Naga issue is a complex one best be left to GoI and NSCNIM others must refrain from commenting “unquote and another statement supporting the Naga political cause popularly known as Paresh Baruah, ULFA chief stated that “ The Situation will deteriorate if the center delayed inking a peace agreement with the influential Naga group NSCN-IM “. When the outsider extended their full support towards the Naga political settlement what has happened to our Naga by blood people?

Those powerful statement given by outsider in support of the Naga political issue should have been done by the Naga people. But unfortunately resorting every now and then in against of the Naga Political rights and self- determination, how can we achieved our God’s given freedom? If the Naga people don’t stop the anti Naga political climate the history will repeat again and bloodshed may come instead of political solution. Indian agency will continue to divide the Naga society unless the Naga people stand on the truth of their history it will be a disaster and if the present generation forfeit the struggle of the Naga patriots for just mere packages by the GoI. Let us hope and pray that God help out from these situation, let us also pray that God give the heavenly wisdom to all Naga leaders to sort it out their own burden of CAPITAL EGO so as to bring peace in our land when every Naga soul is yearning for a peaceful. Let good sense prevail and let us avoid provocative statement against each other as we anticipate a common solution for all Naga across border. Kuknalim Sulanthung Humtsoe Chairman Lotha Public Organization (LPO)

Lashing out at the Information Commissioner, Bhushan said,”This gentleman calls himself a journalist who was para dropped from nowhere into the Central Information Commission. As author, former journalist and patriotic citizen I retain right to air my views on national security & history. As IC I be judged by my orders which are without favour or fear.” The remarks made by the BJP leaders Nupur Sharma and Naveen Jindal on Prophet Mohammad have drawn international condemnation with some Islamic countries demanding an apology. We will not be intimidated by these tactics. Criticising hate speech and giving hate speeches cannot be equated,” Owaisi said in a series of tweets. “Delhi Police is suffering from “both sideism” or “balance-waad” syndromes. One side has openly insulted our Prophet while the other side has been named to assuage BJP supporters & make it look like there was hate speech on both sides,” he said in another tweet. He alleged that the “hate speech” was delivered by ruling party spokespersons and by prominent “Dharam Gurus” with close links to the BJP which is being equated to random posts on social media with no social or political standing. “In my case FIR isn’t even saying WHAT was offensive,” he said in one of the tweets.

NEW DELHI, JUN 9 (PTI): India should make a list of citizens who “instigated” Islamic nations against it and “charge them with treason,” Information Commissioner Uday Mahurkar has said following outrage by Islamic countries over the remarks against Prophet Mohammad by the BJP’s now-sacked functionaries. Mahurkar’s comments invited a strong response from Supreme Court lawyer Prashant Bhushan, who charged that statutory and constitutional bodies are being systematically destroyed by the government. Mahurkar, a former journalist who was appointed at the transparency watchdog Central Information Commission, said in a tweet, “The Nation has taken measures on the Prophet controversy. Now time for India to make a list of Indian citizens who instigated Islamic nations against India & charge them with treason.” “Their’s is anti-national activity. Even their property could be attached by enacting a Law,” he tweeted. In another tweet, he said, “Pan-Islamists & Leftists have questioned my tweet below. Did they ever condemn hate-preacher Zakir Naik & MF Hussain for their unparalleled blasphemy?” “Beware, days of 1-sided secularism & HinduMuslim unity at Hindu cost are now gone in this new age

The FIRs have been registered by the Intelligence Fusion and Strategic Operation (IFSO) unit of the Special Cell, police said. On Wednesday, police said the unit would investigate the roles of various social media entities in promoting false and wrong information with an intention to create unrest on the cyber space, that have ramifications on the physical space thereby compromising with the social fabric of the country. Earlier, Delhi Police had provided security to Sharma and her family after an FIR was registered on a complaint that she was getting death threats over her controversial remarks on Prophet Mohammad.

(From p-1) Karnataka: Six candidates are in the fray in the Rajya Sabha elections for four seats from Karnataka, necessitating a tight contest for the fourth seat. Despite not having the adequate number of votes to win the fourth seat from the state assembly, all the three major parties- BJP, Congress and JD(S)- have fielded candidates for the seat, forcing an election. MUMBAI, JUN 9 (PTI): The Reserve Bank of India will soon come out with regulatory architecture for digital lending platforms, many of which are unauthorised and illegal, Governor Shaktikanta Das said on Thursday. There have been increasing cases of alleged suicides of borrowers due to harassment by a few of the operators of digital lending apps. “I think very soon we will be coming out with a broad regulatory architecture, which should be able to address the challenges that we are confronted with regard to lending through digital platforms, many of which are unauthorised, unregistered and, should I say, illegal,” Das said while delivering a lecture on - Indian Businesses (Past, Present and Future). He was speaking at the Iconic Week celebration as part of the ‘Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav’ to mark the 75th anniversary of Independence, organised by the Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC). Das on Wednesday suggested that customers borrowing from unregistered digital lending apps should approach the local police in case of any issue. Most of the digital lending apps are not registered with the central bank and operate by themselves, he told reporters after announcing the monetary policy.

The company’s board had last week given its goahead for the public sector unit to proceed ahead with the issuance of two international tenders -- a short-term and a medium-term -- for sourcing coal from overseas. The last date for the receipt of bids is June 29. There is an option of pre-bid meeting on June 14 to seek clarification on any nuances of the tender, CIL said. After the price discovery, CIL will immediately execute a contract with the successful bidder for supply of coal. Then the state

domestic allocation of the concerned defaulter’s thermal power plants will be further reduced by five per cent, the ministry had said in a letter to state governments and power generation companies, including IPPs. In April, coal secretary A K Jain had attributed the low coal stocks at power plants to several factors such as heightened power demand due to the boom in the economy post-COVID-19, early onset of summer, rise in the price of gas and imported coal, and sharp fall in electricity generation by coastal thermal power plants. In April, several parts of the country witnessed power outages on account of coal shortage. He had said a lot of measures are already underway to enhance the total power supply in the country. Gas-based power generation, which has fallen drastically in the country, has aggravated the crisis, he had said.

Though coal import is an uncharted terrain for CIL, within a week of receiving indents from the seven state gencos and 19 IPPs, for a total of 2.41.6 MTs of coal, the company on a war footing has finalised and floated the tender. The coal imported will be routed through nine ports located in east and west coasts of the country. The successful agency, selected through the bidding process, will deliver coal at the doorstep of the power plants of state gencos and IPPs. The government had earlier directed CIL to be prepared to import 12 million tonnes of coal for power utilities for the next 13 months. On May 18, the ministry of power had warned that if orders for coal imports are not placed by May 31 and the imported fuel does not start arriving at power plants by June 15, the defaulter gencos will have to increase their imports to the extent of 15 per cent. CIL floats maiden tender to import coal

NEW DELHI, JUN 9 (PTI): State-owned CIL on Thursday said that it has floated its maiden tender to import 2.416 million tonnes of coal to ensure adequate supply of the fuel to power plants in the country. The development assumes significance in the wake of the government making all efforts to build up stock of coal to avoid the reoccurrence of power outages which happened in April on account of shortage of the fossil fuel. “In a first ever, Coal India Limited (CIL) on Wednesday floated an international competitive bidding e-tender, seeking bids for import of 2.416 million tonnes (MTs) of coal,” the company said in a statement. The coal being sourced on behalf of the state generating companies (gencos) and independent power plants (IPPs) is based on the indents received from them. NEW DELHI, JUN 9 (PTI): India on Thursday said it carefully monitors developments along its border areas including the construction of infrastructure by the Chinese side in the eastern Ladakh sector. The comments by External Affairs Ministry Spokesperson Arindam Bagchi came in response to remarks by an American military commander that some of the defence infrastructures that China is creating near its border with India in Ladakh is “alarming”. “The government is committed to and takes all adequate and appropriate measures to safeguard territorial integrity and sovereignty as the developments in recent years have clearly demonstrated,” Bagchi said at a media briefing. He said the government of India has taken various measures in

recent years to develop infrastructure along the border areas to not only meet India’s strategic and security requirements but also facilitate the economic developments of the areas. US Army’s Pacific Commanding General Charles A Flynn on Wednesday talked about the infrastructure development by China along its borders with India in the Ladakh sector, and called the Chinese activities in that region as “eyeopening”. “As far as the current situation (in eastern Ladakh) is concerned, we have maintained continuous communication with the Chinese side both through diplomatic and military channels,” Bagchi said. He said India will maintain its dialogue with the Chinese side to resolve the remaining issues in eastern Ladakh.

The bench was hearing a plea filed by Rajendra Trivedi, former ACP of the Maharashtra Police. On Thursday, Trivedi’s advocate S B Talekar also submitted an affidavit, stating that a private complaint of defamation was filed against Jaiswal in 2012 and a magistrate’s court in the city had taken its cognisance and issued a process against him. Noting that exports from some sectors have hit a record, he said supporting and developing every sector is the country’s need and his government is exploring every means to give momentum to India’s development. The biotech sector is very important in giving new momentum to the country’s development, he said. Talking about the growing reputation of Indian professionals on the global stage, the prime min-

cable to different sectors of India also, he said, adding this has resulted in reversal of the scene when few selected sectors were focused upon and others were left to fend for themselves. Today, he said, every sector is giving impetus to the development of the country, that is why every sector’s ‘saath’ and every sector’s ‘vikas’ is the need of the hour. “This change in thinking and approach is giving results,” he added. He also gave examples of focus on a much larger number of sectors in recent years. For the biotech sector too, unprecedented steps are being taken which are clearly manifested in the startup ecosystem. The prime minister said in order to transcend government-centric approach, the government is encouraging a culture of providing new enabling interfaces. Platforms like BIRAC are being strengthened and many other sectors are seeing this approach.

Moosewala killing: CBI counters Punjab Police Surjewala confuses Sita with NEW DELHI, JUN 9 (PTI): Setting the record straight, India’s Interpol liaison agency CBI issued a statement on Thursday saying the Punjab Police had sought a Red Corner Notice against Goldy Brar, who claimed responsibility for the killing of singer Sidhu Moosewala, only on May 30, a day after the killing. Satinderjeet Singh, alias Goldy Brar, is currently living in Canada. The statement from the CBI flew in the face of the Punjab Police which claimed on Wednesday that it had sought a Red Cor ner Notice against gangster Brar nearly 10 days before Moosewala’s killing on May 29. The CBI said a communication was received from the Bureau of Investigation, Punjab Police through an email on May 30 at 12.25 PM with a letter dated May 19 attached in it seeking issuance of Red Notice against Brar in two FIRs registered by Punjab Police -- FIR No. 409 dated

ing extradition request, more so when the location of subject is known. The Red Notice alerts enforcement agencies of 195 Interpol member countries to locate and detain a fugitive wanted by a requesting member country. FIR number 409 pertains to a shootout near the Kataria petrol pump in Faridkot on November 11, 2020 in which a charge sheet was filed in November, 2021 and warrants were issued in October, 1, 2021, they said. The second FIR pertains to the murder of Gurlal Singh in Faridkot on February 18, 2021 in which a charge sheet was also filed in November, 2021. The warrants were opened on September 13, 2021, they said. “After processing for confirmation of pre-requisite requirements, the Red Notice proposal was forwarded expeditiously to INTERPOL (Headquarters), Lyon on 02-06-2022,” the CBI’s spokesperson said. He said the Interna-

tional Police Cooperation Unit (IPCU) of the CBI coordinates the requests of sister law enforcement agencies for informal coordination through Interpol, including requests for issuance of colour-coded notices. “IPCU, CBI checks the requests for eligibility as per Rules of Processing Data of Interpol so that the request is complete and the notices are issued early. The final issuance of notices is done by Interpol (HQ), Lyon (France) in line with Rules for Processing of Data,” he said. The agency said the request for issuance of Red Notice against Harwinder Singh Rinda had been sent to the Interpol headquarters. “It is further clarified that Interpol channels are used for informal international police-to-police cooperation and a Red Notice is neither mandatory nor a pre-requisite for sending extradition request, more so when the location of subject is known,” the statement said.

He was expressing confidence of the party’s victory and was simultaneously hitting out the BJP when by mistake he referred to Sita. “Majority will win, democracy will win, Constitution will win, law will win, morality will win and those who are under cover

of lies… like at one time Sita Maiya’s ‘cheerharan’ had happened… they want to do ‘cheerharan’ of democracy, those people will be defeated and exposed,” he told reporters in Udaipur on Thursday. Targeting media baron Subhash Chandra who is contesting as an independent candidate, Surjewala said, “Those who have come to Rajasthan on the basis of money power, CBI, Enforcement Directorate and Income Tax Department will be defeated.” Elections to four seats of the Rajya Sabha from the state will take place on Friday. Besides Sur jewala, Congress has fielded Mukul Wasnik and Pramod Tiwari while BJP has given ticket to former minister Ghanshyam Tiwari. Subhash Chandra is contesting election as an independent candidate and he is backed by the BJP and the Rashtriya Loktantrik Party (RLP).

CJI inaugurates 2 special courts in Tirupati

MUMBAI, JUN 9 (PTI): A special court here on Thursday rejected the pleas filed by Maharashtra minister Nawab Malik and former minister Anil Deshmukh seeking a day’s bail to vote in the Rajya Sabha elections to be held on Friday. Deshmukh and Malik, both senior NCP leaders, are currently lodged in jail in connection with different money laundering cases being probed by the Enforcement Directorate (ED).

The duo had last week filed applications seeking temporary bail before special judge R N Rokade. After hearing extensive arguments by all the parties, the court on Thursday refused temporary bail to Malik and Deshmukh. The Enforcement Directorate had opposed their pleas, saying that prisoners do not have voting rights under the Representation of the People Act. Deshmukh was arrested by the Enforcement Directorate in November

2021 in a money laundering case. Malik was arrested by the ED on February 23 this year in connection with a money laundering probe linked to the activities of fugitive gangster Dawood Ibrahim and his aides. In the Rajya Sabha polls to six seats from Maharashtra, every vote is crucial for the Shiv Sena-led Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA), of which the NCP is a constituent, to get the Sena’s second candidate- Sanjay Pawarelected. After more than two decades, the state will witness a contest in the Rajya Sabha polls as there are seven candidates in the fray for the six seats. The ruling Shiv Sena has fielded two candidates, its MVA allies NCP and Congress have nominated one candidate each, while the opposition BJP has put up three candidates. The contest lies between BJP’s Dhananjay Mahadik and Shiv Sena’s Sanjay Pawar.

NEW DELHI, JUN 9 (PTI): The maximum temperature in Delhi-NCR and other parts of northwest India will come down by a few notches over the weekend but no major relief is likely till June 15, the India Meteorological Department said on Thursday. It said moisture-laden easterly winds will bring significant relief in the region from June 16 onwards. “There is a heatwave warning for parts of northwest and central India on Thursday but a steep rise in the temperature is not predicted,” senior IMD scientist R K Jenamani said. Northwest and central India is reeling under a heatwave spell since June 2 due to an onslaught of hot and dry westerly winds. “The ongoing heatwave spell is less intense as compared to those recorded in April-end and May, but the area of impact is almost equal,” he said.

Amit Shah to chair Western Zonal Council meet on Jun 11

NEW DELHI, JUN 9 (PTI): A meeting of the Western Zonal Council, comprising Gujarat, Maharashtra, Goa and Union Territory of Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu will be held on Saturday in Diu, officials said. The home minister too has laid stress on the importance of cooperative federalism to empower states and promote a better understanding between the Centre and states in the policy framework. The zonal councils provide a platform to foster such collaboration through a structured mechanism for dialogue and discussion

on continuous basis on the issues affecting two or more states or the Centre and states, in the spirit that strong states make a strong nation, another official said. Shah in the past had emphasised on using the platform of zonal council for resolving disputes and promoting cooperative federalism. The issues related to coastal security are expected to figure prominently as all western states have maritime boundaries. Gujarat has a coastal length of 1,214 km, Maharashtra 652 km, Goa 105 km and the Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu about 42 km. The zonal councils take up issues involving the Centre and states and one or many states falling in the zone. The councils, thus, provide a forum for resolving disputes and irritants between the Centre and states and among states in

the zone. The zonal councils discuss a broad range of issues which include boundary-related disputes, security, infrastructurerelated matters like road, transport, industries, water, and power, matters pertaining to forests and environment, housing, education, food security, tourism and transport.

Five zonal councils were set up in 1957 under Section 15-22 of the States Re-organisation Act, 1956. The Union home minister is the chairman of each of these five zonal councils and chief minister of Two more ministers from each state are nominated as members by the governor.

JAIPUR, JUN 9 (PTI): The BJP on Thursday accused Congress leader Randeep Surjewala of insulting goddess Sita, asking why the party “hates Hindus so much”. Hindu temple vandalised in Karachi KARACHI, JUN 9 (IANS): A Hindu temple in Karachi has been vandalised, causing fear and panic among members of the community living in the Pakistani city, a media report said on Thursday. According to The Express Tribune report, the incident took place on Wednesday at the Shri Mari Maata temple in the city’s Korangi area. After receiving information of the vandalisation, the police reached the area and inspected the temple, while also deploying additional forces in the area. Sanjeev, a Hindu resident of the area, told The Express Tribune that six to eight individuals on motorcycles came and attacked the temple. “We don’t know who has attacked and why,” he said. Korangi SHO Farooq Sanjrani confirmed that “five to six unknown suspects entered the temple and escaped after vandalising it”.

cal unrest with protesters demanding President Rajapaksa’s resignation. “President Rajapaksa requested the diplomats to extend all possible assistance for Sri Lanka in resolving the existing situation. He also expressed his appreciation of the assistance provided by those countries so far,” according to a statement issued by the President’s office. In keeping with India’s ‘Neighbourhood First’ policy, New Delhi has extended this year alone support worth over USD 3.5 billion to the people of Sri Lanka for helping them overcome their current difficulties. India has rushed as-

sistance in the form of line credit and other modes to help Sri Lanka which has virtually declared insolvency and defaulted on all foreign loans including that of China totalling USD 51 billion. China has announced an assistance of 500 million RMB (about USD 74 million) for the supply of essential goods but remained silent about President Rajapaksa’s request to defer the loan repayment and as well as its earlier announcement to consider a USD 2.5 billion loan facility for Colombo. An IMF bailout programme is being currently worked out and expected to be available in the last quarter of the year. Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe has announced that extended credit lines from India are being sought until the availability of the IMF facility. In a rare gesture, China on Wednesday commended India’s efforts to assist Sri Lanka to deal with its worst financial

crisis but refuted the island nation’s President Gotabaya Rajapaksa’s remarks that Beijing has shifted its strategic focus from South Asia, including Pakistan, to South East Asia, saying the region still remained its priority. India has extended an additional USD 500 million credit line to Sri Lanka to help the neighbouring country import fuel as it has been struggling to pay for imports after its foreign exchange reserves plummeted sharply in recent times, causing a devaluation of its currency and spiralling inflation. With the economic crisis and the shortage of Forex, the Indian credit line of USD 500 million for fuel imports has provided a lifeline to the island nation, which is currently experiencing its worst economic crisis since gaining independence in 1948. A total of close to 4,00,000 MT of various types of fuel have been delivered with Indian assistance in March and April.

LIMA, JUN 9 (IANS): At least 14 people were killed in a clash between groups of small-scale gold miners in Peru’s Arequipa department, the local prosecutor’s office said. Seven bodies were found with gunshot wounds, and seven more were found on Tuesday, while more bodies could be discovered as several people remain missing, Arequipa prosecutor Maria del Rosario Lozada told local media on Wednesday. The violence broke out June 2 in a disputed area called Huanaquita in the Atico district, Caraveli province, according to local newspaper El Comercio. Authorities have arrested 31 people in connection with the incident and will run ballistics tests on the firearms and ammunition recovered to determine their role in the event, said Lozada. The prosecutor’s office is analysing videos and audios of the incident to identify those responsible. Smoke rises from the crash site in Laohekou City, Xiangyang, in central Hubei province on June 9.

BEIJING, JUN 9 (PTI): A Chinese military jet crashed in a residential area in central China’s Hubei Province on Thursday, killing one person and injuring two others in the country’s third aviation accident in over two months. The J-7 fighter jet of the Chinese People’s Liberation Army Air Force crashed in the residential area in Xiangyang city, the state-run CGTN reported. One person was killed

and two others were injured, besides damage to residential buildings. The pilot ejected successfully. The pilot and the injured people have all been sent to the hospital for treatment, the report said. The cause of the accident and the casualties are being further investigated and verified, the report said. The plane crashed in the residential area near the airport, setting off fire to several buildings, the Hong

Kong-based South China Morning Post reported. State broadcaster CCTV’s military channel reported that the J-7 fighter jet crashed during training. Videos of the crash posted on social media showed several houses on fire at the scene. Laohekou Airport is now mainly used as a training site for new fighter pilots from the Air Force, the Post report said. There have been several other cases of fighter jets crashing during training flights in China. In 2015, a Chinese air force pilot parachuted to safety moments before his aircraft crashed into a hillside. Two years before that, a military pilot died when his fighter jet crashed during night training in eastern Zhejiang, the report said. The crash that took place on Thursday is the third accident involving planes in China since March this year.

With the Rajapaksas coming under intense public pressure for their mishandling of the economic crisis, Mahinda Rajapaksa, the prime minister and elder brother of President Gotabaya Rajapaksa, had to resign last month. Talking to reporters here, Basil said, “I resigned my seat to allow Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) to nominate someone suitable.” Asked if he had preempted resignation as he would be disqualified to be

One 11-year-old girl told the hearing - in prerecorded testimony - that she had smeared her classmate’s blood on herself to play dead, and graphically described the moment the gunman shot her teacher in the head. The Uvalde attack and other recent mass killings have sparked a new round of bipartisan talks on gun control in the US Senate, but Democrats need at least 10 Republicans on board to pass any new laws.

Conservatives want to protect the constitutional right to bear arms and object to limiting sales of the assault-style rifles used in the Uvalde shooting. And while a group of Republican and Democratic senators are trying to find

common ground, correspondents say that whatever they come up with is very unlikely to involve any sweeping reforms. On Thursday, more than 220 CEOs of major companies - including Levi Strauss & Co, Lululemon and Lyft - called on the Senate “take immediate action” to reduce gun violence following the recent spate of shooting deaths. “Taken together, the gun violence epidemic represents a public health crisis that continues to devastate communities especially Black and Brown communities - and harm our national economy,” the business leaders wrote.

Adding further pressure to lawmakers, major Republican donors joined other conservative Texans in signing an open letter pushing for gun control. The letter is expected to run as a full-page ad in the Dallas Morning News on Sunday and will support expanding background checks and raising the age to purchase a gun to 21. In the House of Representatives, Wednesday’s wide-ranging package of legislation, called the “Protecting Our Kids Act” by lawmakers, passed by 223204 votes with just five Republicans joining Democrats in supporting the bill.

BEIJING, JUN 9 (PTI): China on Thursday termed the critical remarks by a top US General on its infrastructure build-up at the Sino-India border as a “despicable act” and criticised the attempts of some American officials to “add fuel to fire”, emphasising that Beijing and New Delhi have the “will and capability” to properly resolve their differences through talks. Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Zhao Lijian made the remarks during a media briefing here while replying to a question on the comments by US Army’s Pacific Commanding General Charles A Flynn, who termed the situation in eastern Ladakh as “alarming.” “This border issue is between China and India (and) the two sides have the will and capability to properly resolve the issue through talks,” Zhao said. Zhao said “some US officials are trying to add fuel to the fire and pointing fingers. This is a despicable act. We hope they will do more to contribute to regional peace and stability.”

Zhao Lijian

He reiterated that the situation at eastern Ladakh where the two sides had over two year-long military standoff is “stabilising”. “Now the situation there is stabilising on the whole and the frontline forces from both countries have realised disengagement in most areas along the western section,” Zhao said. Gen Flynn, who is on a visit to India, said on Wednesday that some of the defence infrastructure that is being created by China near its border with India in Ladakh is “alarming”, calling the Chinese activity in that region as “eye-opening”. Flagging concerns over the Chinese infra build-up, the US General also said that the “de-

stabilising and corrosive” behaviour of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) in the Indo-Pacific region is simply not helpful. “I think it is worthy of us working together as a counterweight to some of those corrosive and corruptive behaviours that the Chinese do,” he told reporters. The Indian and Chinese troops have been locked in a tense border standoff in eastern Ladakh since May 5, 2020, when a violent clash between the two sides erupted in the Pangong lake area. Last month, it emerged that China is constructing a second bridge in an area held by it around the strategically key Pangong Tso lake in eastern Ladakh and this could help its military to quickly mobilise its troops in the region. China has also been establishing other infrastructure such as roads and residential units in the border areas with India. India and China have held 15 rounds of military talks so far to resolve the Ladakh standoff.

from smoke inhalation, and 26 of them were being treated at nearby hospitals, said Park Seok-jin, chief of Daegu’s Suseong district fire department.

The death toll climbed relatively high in a short period of time possibly because the building didn’t have sprinklers on its office floors, according to Park,

who didn’t answer directly when asked whether there were any lapses in legally required safety standards. Jeong Hyeon-wook, an official from Daegu Metropolitan Police, said security camera footage shows the suspect leaving his home holding an apparent container with both hands that may have been used to set the blaze. Jeong said all of the dead people were found in the same room and that police were investigating possible motives. A team from the National Forensic Services was also deployed to the site. With the suspect dead, it’s unclear whether anyone

will be prosecuted over the fire unless police find an accomplice, Jeong said. South Korean media photos show people awaiting rescue on the roof and crowded balconies as smoke emerged from the building in Beomeo-dong, an affluent business district in Daegu, which is South Korea’s fourth-largest city and home to more than 2.4 million people. Rescue workers wearing helmets and oxygen masks escorted people out of the building’s front door and used ladders and broke windows to get inside the second floor before carrying out the dead on stretchers.

Turkey’s Erdogan says he will run for reelection next year

Recep Tayyip Erdogan

ANKARA, JUN 9 (AP): Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan confirmed Thursday that he plans to stand for reelection next year. Erdogan, 68, made the announcement during a speech in the Aegean coastal city of Izmir, where he challenged the main opposition party’s leader, Kemal Kilicdaroglu, to announce the candidate who would challenge him on behalf of an alliance of opposition parties. ”(Recep) Tayyip Erdogan is the candidate of the People’s Alliance,” Erdogan said, referring to the between his Justice and Development Party and a nationalist party. “If you have the courage, declare your candidacy or the candidate of the alliance.” Turkey is scheduled to hold presidential and parliamentary elections by June 2023 at the latest. Erdogan has led the country for almost 20 years, first as prime minister and then as president. But support for him and the People’s Alliance has steadily declined amid high inflation and a cost of living crisis.

tion, which gives unfettered powers to President Gotabaya after abolishing the 19th Amendment that will strengthen Parliament. In a direct attack on Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe, Basil said he is against presidential powers being pruned to be vested with a prime minister not elected by the people. His elder brother Mahinda Rajapaksa had to resign amidst public anger against the government’s inability to handle the economic crisis. Wickremesinghe last week batted for the 21st Amendment to the Constitution, saying it will curb the president’s unlimited powers while enhancing the role of Parliament in governing the debt-ridden country which is also facing an unprecedented political turmoil. Both Basil, 71, and Mahinda, 76, fell victim to public rage as demonstrations became widespread

urging the resignation of President Gotabaya Rajapaksa, 72, over the economic crisis. Widely regarded as the intellectual pillar of the Rajapaksa family of political brothers, Basil was the finance minister of Sri Lanka until April 4 when he was sacked by President Gotabaya as the country’s economic crisis worsened. He was accused of being partially responsible for the economic crisis in the country. However, Basil denied that the economic crisis was not his making and the country should have gone to the International Monetary Fund (IMF) for a bailout much earlier. Sri Lanka is currently in the process of striking a bailout deal with the IMF. Basil said he was the one who initiated engagement with the IMF but there was another group in the government against it at that time.

Ukraine says troops holding on to Sievierodonetsk, advance in south

Ukrainian servicemen wave as they ride atop an armoured fighting vehicle, amid Russia’s attack in Donetsk region.

Danilov told Reuters in an interview on Thursday. “They don’t spare their people, they’re just sending men like cannon fodder,” he said. “They are shelling our military day and night.” In a rare update from Sievierodonetsk, the commander of Ukraine’s Svoboda National Guard Battalion, Petro Kusyk, said Ukrainians were drawing the Russians into street fighting to neutralise Russia’s artillery advantage. “Yesterday was successful for us - we launched a counteroffensive and in some areas we managed to push them back one or two blocks. In others they pushed us back, but just by a

building or two,” he said in a televised interview. “Yesterday the occupiers suffered serious losses - if every day were like yesterday, this would all be over soon.” But he said his forces were suffering from a “catastrophic” lack of counterbattery artillery to fire back at Russia’s guns, and getting such weapons would transform the battlefield. “Even without these systems, we are holding on fine. There is an order to hold our positions and we are holding them. It is unbelievable what the surgeons are doing without the proper equipment to save soldiers’ lives.”

Sievierodonetsk Mayor Oleksandr Stryuk said on Thursday around 10,000 civilians were still trapped inside the city - around a tenth of its pre-war population. To the west of Sievierodonetsk, Russia is pushing from the north and south, trying to trap Ukrainian forces in the Donbas region comprising Luhansk and neighbouring Donetsk province, blasting Ukrainiancontrolled towns in their path with artillery. In Soledar, a salt-mining town near Bakhmut close to the front line, buildings had been blasted into craters. Remaining residents, mostly elderly, were sheltering in a crowded cellar. A woman peeled potatoes and swatted away flies. Men lay asleep on cots. Kateryna, 85, curled up under a blanket, her hair wrapped in a scarf. “It will be as God shall give,” she said, her voice drowned out by the sound of barking dogs. Antonina, 65, had ventured out to see her garden. “We are staying. We live here. We were born here.” She sobbed: “When is it all going to end?”

South African president grilled in Parl on farm theft J O H A N N E S BU RG, JUN 9 (AP): South African President Cyril Ramaphosa was confronted in Parliament Thursday by opposition politicians who pressed him to step down from office pending a criminal investigation into allegations that he covered up a theft from his rural game farm. Parliament members from the Economic Freedom Fighters were forcibly removed from the legislature’s session for repeatedly interrupting Ramaphosa as he presented the annual budget for his office. The theft in 2020 of a large amount of cash in U.S. dollars from his ranch in the northern Limpopo province was alleged in a criminal complaint filed this month by former intelligence chief Arthur Fraser. Ramaphosa later confirmed the burglary and said the cash was from selling game animals on his farm. The president said that he reported it to the head of his personal protection unit but not to the police. The scandal is a major blow to Ramaphosa’s image as a leader committed to stamping out corruption in South Africa.

VIENNA, JUN 9 (AGENCIES): Iran on Thursday dealt a near-fatal blow to chances of reviving the 2015 Iran nuclear deal as it began removing essentially all the International Atomic Energy Agency monitoring equipment installed under the deal, IAEA chief Rafael Grossi said. Iran had warned of retaliation if the IAEA’s 35-nation Board of Governors passed a resolution drafted by the United States, France, Britain and Germany criticising Tehran for its continued failure to explain uranium traces found at undeclared sites. The resolution was passed by a crushing majority late on Thursday. Iran informed the agency overnight that it plans to remove 27 IAEA cameras and other equipment as of Thursday, which was “basically all” the extra monitoring equipment installed under the 2015 deal going beyond Iran’s core obligations to the agency, Grossi told a news conference called at short notice. That leaves a window of opportunity of three to four weeks to restore some of the monitoring that is being scrapped or else the IAEA will lose the ability to piece together all or essentially all Iran’s most

IAEA Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi speaks at a news conference in Vienna, June 9. (Reuters)

important nuclear activities and material, and restoring the deal requires that, Grossi said. “I think this would be a fatal blow (to reviving the deal),” Grossi said of what would happen if nothing were done within that window of opportunity. Indirect talks between Iran and the United States on reviving the 2015 deal are already stalled and have not been held since March. Since then-President D o n a l d Tr u m p p u l l e d Washington out of the deal and re-imposed sanctions against Tehran in 2018, Iran has breached the deal’s limits on its nuclear activities, enriching uranium to close to weapons-grade, using more advanced centrifuges and swelling its stock of

enriched uranium. While Western powers warn it is getting ever closer to being able to sprint towards making a nuclear bomb, Iran denies having such intentions. As part of its erosion of the deal’s nuclear measures, Iran had already held onto the data recorded by the extra monitoring equipment since February of last year, meaning the IAEA can only hope it will be able to access it at a later date. Grossi said it was not clear what would happen to that data now. He added, however, that more than 40 IAEA cameras would continue to operate as part of the core monitoring of Iran’s activities that predates the 2015 deal.

ISLAMABAD, JUN 9 (IANS): The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has asked the Pakistan government to renegotiate the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) energy deals before making payments of around 300 billion PKR to the Chinese power plants, putting Islamabad in a tight spot. The global lender has asked the government to treat the Chinese CPEC power plants at par with the power plants established under the 1994 and 2002 power policies, highly placed sources told The Express Tribune. These plants had been set up under the CPEC framework agreement. The IMF’s demand came after China’s refusal in the past to renegotiate the terms of agreements with the independent power producers (IPPs). KYIV/SLOVIANSK, JUN 9 (AGENCIES): Ukrainian forces claimed on Thursday to have pushed forward in intense street fighting in the eastern city of Sievierodonetsk, but said their only hope to turn the tide was more artillery to offset Russia’s massive firepower. In the south, Ukraine’s defence ministry said it had captured new ground in a counter-attack in Kherson province, targeting the biggest swathe of territory Russia has seized since its invasion in February. The battle amid the ruins of Sievierodonetsk, a small industrial city, has become one of the war’s bloodiest, with Russia concentrating its invasion force there. Both sides say they have inflicted massive casualties. Sievierodonetsk and its twin city Lysychansk on the opposite bank of the Siverskyi Donets river are the last Ukrainian-controlled parts of Luhansk province, which Moscow is determined to seize as one of its principal war objectives. Grammys add new categories, Did Monkeypox Go Airborne? including songwriter of the year A

T

he Grammys are adding a special song for social change award and five new categories including songwriter of the year, giving the Recording Academy an avenue to honour music’s best composer. T h e a c a d e my a n nounced on Thursday that the new non-classical songwriter category will recognise one individual who was the “most prolific” non-performing and non-producing songwriter for a body of new work during an eligibility year. The category is taking a different approach than song of the year, which awards the songwriter or songwriters who wrote the lyrics or melodies to one song. “This new category is truly for an expert person at the songwriting craft,” Recording Academy CEO Harvey Mason jr told The Associated Press.

Songwriters must have written a minimum of five songs in which they are credited “solely” as a songwriter or co-writer. “Somebody who writes their own music and records it would not be eligible,” he said. “They would have to be doing songs for others. We want to highlight the craft of writing songs professionally for artists.” “Songwriters are at the heart of our business and industry,” he said. “Nothing happens without songwriters. For us, this was a no brainer. It’s in alignment with all the changes. We thought, How can we do more? Showcase more people and be more inclusive to different genres?’” The new category is another huge step for songwriters. Last year, a rule update allowed that any songwriter, producer, engi-

neer or featured artist on an album nominated for album of the year could ultimately earn a nomination. The four other categories include best spoken word poetry album, alternative music performance, Americana music performance and score soundtrack for video games and other interactive media. The academy created a special merit award that determines best song for social change. The award will be based on lyrical content that addresses a timely social issue and promotes “understanding, peacebuilding and empathy”. “It’s always the right time to recognise music that’s changing the world,” he said. “I think it deserves a special recognition. These songs are important and impactful. We want to make sure we’re honouring and celebrating that artform. This is a great way to do that.” Mason said it was yearlong process of accepting proposals to make changes, additions and updates from music creators and professionals that make up the membership body. (AP)

fter adding, and then deleting, a recommendation that U.S. travelers wear masks to protect themselves from monkeypox, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention still says that those traveling to countries where the disease is spreading and “other people who may be in close contact with a person who has been confirmed with monkeypox” should consider wearing masks. Why the new guidance? The advice comes as experts say the monkeypox virus can sometimes spread through the air, at least over short distances, but it’s not clear exactly how much that contributes to the spread of the disease. When it updated its guidance last week for travelers, the CDC advised: “Wear a mask. Wearing a mask can help protect you from many diseases, including monkeypox.” But in a statement released Tuesday, the agency said it “removed the mask recommendation from the monkeypox travel health notice because it caused confusion,” The New York

Times reported. The CDC still advises monkeypox patients to wear a surgical mask, “especially those who have respiratory symptoms,” and also asks other household members to “consider wearing a surgical mask” when in the presence of the person with monkeypox. As of Wednesday, the United States had confirmed 35 cases of monkeypox in 12 states and the District of Columbia. Worldwide, more than a thousand people have been diagnosed with the disease since the first case in the outbreak was reported on May 13, and at least another thousand cases are under investigation, the Times reported. In previous monkeypox outbreaks, most cases occurred among people

who had close contact with an infected person or animal, but airborne transmission was still the only explanation for some cases. But in media and public briefings, health officials have not specifically discussed the possibility of airborne transmission of the monkeypox virus or the use of masks for protection, according to the Times. Still, monkeypox does not spread easily, unlike pathogens such as coronavirus or flu virus. Monkeypox infection requires “really close sustained contact,” Andrea McCollum, the CDC’s leading expert on the virus, told the Times. “This is not a virus that was transmitted over several meters,” she explained. “That’s why we

FELICITATION

have to be really careful how to frame this.” When the Times asked McCollum whether health officials should make the possibility of airborne transmission more widely known, she replied, “It’s a fair point to make, and it’s something we certainly should consider moving forward.” Planning for potential airborne transmission of monkeypox is particularly important in hospitals, Dr. Donald Milton, an expert on viruses at the University of Maryland, told the Times. The many unknowns of monkeypox -- including the primary method of transmission -- were discussed at a conference last week organized by the World Health Organization.

“It’s very ambiguous what the true or dominant route of transmission is, and some of that can be addressed in animal models,” Nancy Sullivan, a researcher at the U.S. National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, said at the conference, the Times reported. “Probably that needs to take a front seat for some of the laboratory research.”

Pakistan beat West Indies by 5 wkts

MULTAN, JUN 9 (IANS): Skipper Babar Azam (103) struck a fine century while Imam-ul-Haq (65) and Mohammad Rizwan (59) scored fifties to help Pakistan overcome West Indies by five wickets in the first One-day International at the Multan Cricket Stadium here. Azam was at his brilliant best while Imam-ulHaq gave him good company as they raised 103 runs for the second wicket. He then added 108 runs for the third wicket with Rizwan before Khushdil Shah (41 not out off 23 balls) sealed victory with a late cameo as Pakistan did enough to sneak past Shai Hope and the West Indies. Hope scored 127 to help West Indies reach 305/8 in 50 overs but with Babar and his boys standing tall, Pakistan reached 306.5 in 42.9 overs to win the first match of the series. Babar Azam continued to make a mockery of opposition bowlers and the Pakistan captain was at it again on Wednesday night as he helped himself to yet another ODI century. It was Babar’s third century on the trot and it also meant he becomes the first player in the history of ODI cricket to score three consecutive centuries on

two separate occasions, said a report on the ICC’s official website. Babar’s innings also saw him become the quickest player to notch 17 ODI centuries and the fastest to complete 1,000 ODI runs as captain. His 103 came off 107 balls and was studded with nine fours. The 27-year-old who is seemingly still on the improve has recently targeted

becoming the first player to be ranked No.1 in all three formats of the game. Babar wasn’t the only player to reach three figures in Multan, with West Indies opener Shai Hope scoring his 12th ODI century with a stylish 127 that helped the Caribbean side post a highly competitive score of 305/8. While Hope’s innings is unlikely to receive the same amount of plaudits

as Babar’s, it was a knock of a similar class and really laid the platform for West Indies’ big total. Hope smashed 15 fours and one massive six during his 134-delivery stay, with his 154-run stand with No.3 Shamarh Brooks a particular highlight. It looked like Pakistan’s run chase was going to prove futile when Babar and Mohammad Rizwan were dismissed in quick succession, but finisher Khushdil Shah had other ideas. The left-hander smashed four sixes and scored an unbeaten 41 during the closing stages of the chase to ensure Pakistan drew first blood in the threematch series. It was only Khushdil’s fifth ODI, but he is making a name for himself as a reliable closer after he performed a similar role with aplomb against Australia in March. Brief scores: West Indies 305/8 in 50 overs (Shai Hope 127, Shamarh Brooks 70, Rovman Powell 32; Haris Rauf 4/77, Shaheen Shah Afridi 2/55) lost to Pakistan 306/5 in 49.2 overs (Babar Azam 103, Imam-ul-Haq 65, Mohammad Rizwan 59, Khushdil Shah 41 not out; Alzarri Joseph 2/55) by 5 wickets.

NAGALAND POST, DIMAPUR FRIDAY, JUNE 10, 2022

1st T20I: South Africa beat India by 7-wkt Indonesia Masters: Sindhu, Sen in QFs NEW DELHI, JUN 9 (IANS): Rassie van der Dussen (75 not out) and David Miller (64 not out) stitched an unbeaten 131run stand to take South Africa to a seven-wicket win over India in the series opener at the Arun Jaitley Stadium on Thursday. After Ishan Kishan’s 76 and finishing touches from captain Rishabh Pant and Hardik Pandya powered India to 211/4, South Africa were in trouble at 81/3 in 8.4 overs, despite a whirlwind Dwaine Pretorius cameo in power-play. That’s when Miller and van der Dussen joined forces to forge an unbroken stand, enough for the visitors to record their highest chase in T20Is and put an end to India’s 12-match winning streak in the format. The seven-wicket win also means that South Africa are now 1-0 up in the five-match series. The pursuit of 212 began with captain Temba Bavuma whipping Avesh Khan off his wrists through

square leg for four before moving across and scooping over fine leg for another boundary. But Bavuma’s promising stay was ended by a Bhuvneshwar Kumar leg-cutter in the third over, which the South Africa skipper nicked behind to Pant. South Africa’s gamble

to send Dwaine Pretorius at three worked well in their favour when he blasted 29 runs off 13 balls. He began by punching Bhuvneshwar crisply through cover before slog-sweeping Yuzvendra Chahal for a huge six over cow corner. Quinton de Kock never

got going in his innings of 22 and swept straight to long-leg off Axar Patel in the ninth over. David Miller’s introduction quickened South Africa’s scoring pace, slicing Harshal square through the off-side for four, followed by flicking nonchalantly over deep square leg for six. Miller then creamed Axar for a four through cover and dispatched leftarm spinner for sixes over long-off and mid-wicket to take 19 runs off the 13th over. He then dished out boundaries against Bhuvneshwar, pulling between deep mid-wicket and longon for four before lofting effortlessly over long-off for six. Miller closed the 15th over by reaching his fifty in 22 balls, keeping South Africa in the hunt. Rassie van der Dussen, dropped on 29 by Shreyas Iyer, shed his cautious self by slamming Harshal for back-to-back sixes over long-on and backward square leg in the 17th over before pulling an outside the off-stump delivery through

mid-wicket for four. He then brought up his fifty in 37 balls with a flat pulled six over deep mid-wicket in an over which yielded 22 runs. Miller brought up the century of his fourth wicket association with van der Dussen with a clean heaved six over deep mid-wicket off Bhuvneshwar in the 18th over. Van der Dussen then slog-swept Bhuvneshwar high over deep mid-wicket for six and amassed back-toback fours through square of the wicket on the off-side to take South Africa closer to victory. The duo knocked off the remaining 12 runs easily, with van der Dussen finishing off the chase, reverse sweeping Chahal for four to open their series with a win. Brief Scores: India 211/4 in 20 overs (Ishan Kishan 76, Shreyas Iyer 36; Wayne Parnell 1/32, Dwaine Pretorius 1/35) lost to South Africa 212/3 in 19.1 overs (Rassie van der Dussen 75 not out, David Miller 64 not out; Axar Patel 1/40, Bhuvneshwar Kumar 1/43) by seven wickets

JAKARTA, JUN 9 (PTI): Two-time Olympic medallist PV Sindhu and World Championship bronze winner Lakshya Sen progressed to the quarterfinals of the Indonesia Masters Super 500 badminton tournament with contrasting wins here on Thursday. Sen, who was part of the Indian team that claimed a historic Thomas Cup title triumph in Bangkok, registered a 21-18 21-15 win over world number 13 Rasmus Gemke of Denmark in 54 minutes in the men’s singles. In the women’s singles, Sindhu was made to toil hard for over an hour by Gregoria Mariska Tunjung of Indonesia before winning 23-21 20-22 21-11 in the second round. Sen, seeded seventh, will next be pitted against Chinese Taipei’s third seed Chou Tien Chen, who had defeated the Indian in a three-game thriller during the Thomas Cup last month in their only meeting. A tough quarterfinal awaits fourth seeded Sindhu as she will take on the winner of the match between Thailand’s fifth seed Ratcha-

PV Sindhu and Lakshya Sen

nok Intanon and Kirsty Gilmour of Scotland. Against the unseeded Tunjung, Sindhu started on a bright note and played aggressively to surge to a 10-5 lead. She used her experience and reach to engage her opponents in long rallies initially. But the Indonesian, whom Sidhu had defeated six times earlier, made a remarkable fightback to claw her way back into the contest to level the scores at 15 apiece. The second game was a complete contrast as it was Tunjung who started on an attacking note and raced to a 10-5 lead before Sindhu fought back to draw parity at 15-15. Thereafter, the play-

ers continued their battle for points till 20 points before determined the Indonesian won the game to take the match into the decider. The decider, however, was a one-sided affair as after a few initial exchanges, to be precise till seven points, Sindhu didn’t allow her opponent an inch and used her big match experience to run away with the game and the match. Sindhu will face Indonesia’s Gregoria Mariska Tunjung, while the mixed doubles pairing of Ashwini Ponnappa and B Sumeeth Reddy will take on second seeds Chinese Zheng Si Wei and Huang Ya Qiong later in the day.

NEW DELHI, JUN 9 (IANS): Ahead of the eauction for the new media rights of the Indian Premier League (IPL), the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has hinted at increasing the number of matches in the cash-rich league per season in the next cycle of 2023-27. As per indications, the numbers will add up to 410 with a gradual increase after every two editions. It has been learned that the Indian cricket board would schedule 74 games in the first two years of the cycle - 2023

and 2024 - followed by 84 matches in the next couple of seasons. In the fifth and final season of the cycle, it could be 94 although the BCCI has kept the option of 84 games also open. However, the bidders for the media rights are believed to have been advised to go with the calculation of 410 games, and not 370, a Cricbuzz report said. If this plan gets implemented, then it would be interesting to see how the BCCI/IPL will break down the number of games for

each team so that the desired numbers 84 and 94 numbers are added up perfectly. It is likely that in the case of 94 games, each team will play twice each, home and away -- the regular format -- followed by the four play-offs. As of now, the league

is divided into two virtual groups of five teams with each side playing twice against four others in its group, once against four of the other group and twice against the remaining one team. If the playoff clashes are included, the number goes up to 74. In the case of 84, the formula could be playing twice against each side in one’s own group, twice against two of the other group and once against the remaining three. The report further stated that there is no ambiguity in the number of games for

the Special non-exclusive Package (C) when the number of games goes up in the upcoming seasons. Earlier, it was reported that the special package will have the rights to 18 matches in a 74-game season. And, it has been now learnt that there will be 20 games for an 84-game season and 22 games for a 94-game edition. In total, the number of games in Package C in five years will be 96, which includes the opening match of every season, four playoffs and the night matches of the double-headers.

Celtics outmuscle Warriors to take 2-1 Finals lead BOSTON, JUN 9 (AGENCIES): Jayson Tatum, Jaylen Brown and Marcus Smart combined for 77 points as the Boston Celtics beat the Golden State Warriors 116100 to take a 2-1 lead in the NBA Finals. Brown scored 17 points in the first quarter and the Celtics shot 57% from the floor in the first half to go into the halftime break up by 12. The Warriors came out firing in the third quarter and briefly took the lead on a three-pointer by Stephen Curry, who had a game high 31 points. But the Celtics used their superior size to domi-

nate the glass while their smothering defense led to 16 Golden State turnovers. The Warriors, who suf-

fered a fourth quarter collapse in Game One before responding with a blowout win in Game Two, struggled

to match Boston’s physicality throughout. One positive sign for the Warriors was that Klay Thompson, who had poor shooting performances in the first two games of the series, came alive on Wednesday, scoring 25 points. But the Warriors had no answer to Boston center Robert Williams, who grabbed 10 rebounds and helped the Celtics outscore the Warriors 52-26 in the paint. Tatum said the Celtics must keep their guard up against the experienced Warriors, who are appearing in their sixth Finals in eight years.
