Check gate removal yet to impact market

Staff Reporter

DIMAPUR, JUN 9 (NPN): Public perception that dismantling of all check gates except inter-state as ordered by the state government , would result in reduction in prices of various items in the market has not happened which may indicate that either sellers don’t want to reduce prices or that multiple taxes are responsible for sky high price was a bogey. This aspect was revealed when Nagaland Post met a cross section of people including traders in Dimapur, Kohima and Mokokchung about the impact of the recent government ban order. It was found that some sellers of perishable items had marginally reduced prices by only around 25 to 50 paisa per kg following the removal of all unauthorised check gates. A trader dealing in per-

NSF ‘People’s Rally’ in Delhi on June 11

DIMAPUR, JUN 9 (NPN): Naga Students’ Federation (NSF) in collaboration with the Naga Students’ Union, Delhi would be organizing “People’s Rally” in New Delhi on June 11, under the banner “A Call for Peace”. In a press note, coordination committee on ‘Peoples’ Rally’ informed that the march would proceed from Mandi House and conclude at Jantar Mantar with solidarity messages from different Naga civil society organizations and well-wishers. It informed that the rally was aimed at raising the genuine concern and aspiration of the Nagas who were and continued to be “subjugated by the colonial powers.”

Police to act against unregistered vehicles DIMAPUR, JUN 9 (NPN): Dimapur police would be checking un-registered vehicles, vehicles registered outside Nagaland state, commercial vehicles and government condemned vehicles using the same government registration numbers. In a press release, Dimapur police PRO stated that many such vehicles were plying in Dimapur, Chümoukedima and Niuland districts in violation of the provisions of the Motor Vehicle Act, 1988. During the checking of all such vehicles, PRO said defaulters would be penalised. All owners/drivers of such vehicles have been advised to carry valid documents and adhere to the provisions of the said the Motor Vehicle Act.

come down because the rates were reduced by manufacturers across India. In Kohima, a resident told Nagaland Post that the prices remained the same as fixed by authorities. The same was the input gathered from residents of Mokokchung. The message from the residents of both towns was that authorities need to seriToll booths wear deserted look at New Field Check gate on Thursday. (NP) ously assess the pricing of ishable items such a fruits and vegetables maintained that the rates existing before the ban order and post-ban order had no impact on the prices of items except very marginally. However, there was some marked reduction in prices of construction items such as cement and MS Rods. Prior to the ban on multiple taxation at various check gates, the price of a 50 kg bag of cement used to be sold at Rs.510 and after the ban was imposed, the price

has come down to Rs.490 per bag. Similarly, MS Rod which used to be sold at Rs.80 to 85 per kg before the ban, has come down to Rs.70 to 75 after the ban. Before the ban prices of these items at Dimapur were costlier than at Khatkhati but after the ban, the prices prevailing at both Dimapur and Khatkhati are almost the same. A dealer at Dimapur claimed that the rates of cement and rod per kg have

various commodities sold in the market in order to determine the rate(s) to be fixed. This appears to be a lacuna of market price fixation. There are also reports that the collectors may be giving the slip or traversing the ban by carrying out their business through ingenuous means or acting like mobile check posts wherever transport trucks unload their (Cont’d on p-8) goods.

CNTC asks why prices haven’t come down Central Nagaland Tribes Council (CNTC) while lauding the state government for heeding to the long cry of common people by removing the check-gates, at the same time asked why prices of essential commodities have not yet come down. Further, CNTC noted that when fuel prices had also come down, prices of all goods were yet to come down, adding that there seemed to be no respite for the common man. Levying of taxes on transporting agencies and goodscarrying vehicles at multiple check gates was said to be the main reason of rise in prices. So, when all these gates had been removed, prices should also have come down accordingly though this had not been the case, it added. CNTC urged the State government to immediately look into this matter and relieve the common public from this menace.

RPP questions DoSE over recruitment of Hindi GTs DIMAPUR, JUN 9 (NPN): Rising People’s Party (RPP) has questioned Department of School Education (DoSE) why exam for recruiting Hindi graduate teachers should not be first held only for qualified indigenous inhabitants who are Hindi graduates/post-graduates with B Ed. Referring to the advertisement issued by the department on May 30 for recruitment of Hindi graduate teachers, the party in a press release claimed that there were a good many Nagas who had the requisite qualification, adding that, in case of shortfall after the initial recruitment, the all-

India open advertisement could have been issued by the department. Quoting the advertisement that states that “preference will be given to local candidates” and terming this as the crux of the problem plaguing the State, the party wanted to know how this preference would be worked out and whether there was a fixed quota reserved for the indigenous candidates. It alleged that preference was simply another word for “khushi-khushi” or departmental manipulation that was totally unacceptable. The party also asked what would be the mode of selection and, if written

examination and interview would be held, whether the results would be made public through print media for transparency. It further asked whether the correct answers would be published so as to help the candidates self-evaluate and compare with the marks published. Unless its recommendations were taken into consideration and the faulty advertisement was restructured, RPP warned that there was a high chance that aggrieved candidates from outside the State – candidates with higher marks scored but denied selection due to the preference policy – would drag DoSE to court.

DoSE was already plagued by so many litigations hampering the future of education in the State and avoiding another possible litigation should be considered, the party advised. Meanwhile, RPP said it was gratifying that DoSE had taken penal against 441 government teachers found engaged in proxy teaching, dual service and absenteeism, including terminating the service of 18 teachers. While these steps were appreciable, the party also urged the department to tackle the issues of “attachment” of teachers to VIP/ SDEOs/DEOs, principal director system, etc.

RS polls today: Stakes high for 16 seats across four States

NEW DELHI, JUN 9 (AGENCIES): Stakes are high for the 16 Rajya Sabha seats across four states, voting for which will be conducted on Friday. The outcome will determine the balance in the upper House of Parliament, where the ruling NDA does not command a majority, unlike in the Lok Sabha. Of the 57 Rajya Sabha seats that fell vacant, 41 candidates in Uttar Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Bihar, Andhra Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Odisha, Chhattisgarh, Punjab, Telangana, Jharkhand and Uttarakhand were declared elected unopposed last Friday. However, elections will be held for 16 seats of Haryana, Rajasthan, Maharashtra and Karnataka on Friday as the number of candidates exceeds the seats going to the polls. An exciting day could be in store, as parties, wary of poaching and cross voting, are leaving nothing to chances. Rajasthan: Congress has fielded Mukul Wasnik, Pramod Tiwari and Randeep Surjewala for the polls from Rajasthan, while the BJP has chosen as its official candidate former minister Ghanshyam Tiwari. The Congress and the BJP are set to comfortably win two and one seats, respectively. But Media baron Subhash Chandra has made the contest interesting by entering the fray as a BJPbacked independent candidate. Congress accused the BJP of horse-trading attempts and had shifted its MLAs to a resort in Udaipur on June 2. The BJP also shifted its MLAs to a hotel on the outskirts of Jaipur

on June 6 for a “training camp”. Amid allegations of horse trading, Subhash Chandra has increased worries of the ruling party by claiming that eight MLAs will cross vote in his favour to hand him a victory. The Congress currently has 108 legislators in the 200-member state assembly and needs 123 votes to win three seats. The Bharatiya Tribal Party (BTP) with two MLAs has extended support to it. The Congress is also claiming the support of 13 Independents and one Rashtriya Lok Dal MLA, who is currently a state minister. On the other hand, the BJP has 71 MLAs. After the victory of its party candidate, BJP will be left with 30 surplus votes, which will go to Subhash Chandra. Three MLAs of the Rashtriya Loktantrik Party (RLP) too have extended support to Chandra, who needs eight more seats to win the elections. Maharashtra: In a setback to chief minister Uddhav Thackeray and the MVA alliance, a special court in Mumbai rejected the pleas of Maharashtra minister Nawab Malik and former minister Anil Deshmukh seeking a day’s

bail to vote in Friday’s Rajya Sabha elections. Both have now moved Bombay HC, and a hearing is scheduled for Friday morning. There are seven candidates in the fray for the six seats, that makes the contest interesting and every vote crucial. Union minister Piyush Goyal, Anil Bonde, Dhananjay Mahadik (BJP), Praful Patel (NCP), Sanjay Raut and Sanjay Pawar (Shiv Sena) and Imran Pratapgarhi (Congress) are in fray for the six seats. The contest is for the sixth seat- between Mahadik and Pawar- for which both MVA parties and BJP are banking on the 25 additional votes of smaller parties and independents. Haryana: The Haryana Congress MLAs have left for a resort in Chattisgarh’s Raipur and are expected to reach Chandigarh just hours before the polling for the Rajya Sabha elections begins on Friday, sources said. Meanwhile, the ruling BJP-JJP MLAs remain lodged at a resort in Chandigarh for the second day as the contest for one of the two seats going to the polls sharpened. The BJP has fielded former Minister Krishan Lal Panwar while Ajay Maken is the Congress nominee. While the BJP has sufficient votes to win one seat, the contest has spiced up for the second seat with entry of media baron Kartikeya Sharma, an Independent candidate who is backed by the BJP-JJP combine. He is also supported by Independents and Gopal Kanda, lone MLA of the Haryana Lokhit Party. (Cont’d on p-8)

NEW DELHI, JUN 9 (PTI/AGENCIES): The single-day rise in new coronavirus infections in the country was recorded over 7,000 after 99 days, registering nearly 40 per cent jump in daily cases, while the daily positivity rate crossed 2 per cent after 111 days, the Union Health Ministry said on Thursday. A total of 7,240 infections were recorded in a span of 24 hours taking India’s total tally of COVID-19 cases to 4,31,97,522, while the death toll has climbed to 5,24,723 with eight fresh fatalities, data updated at 8 am by the ministry stated.

States asked to ramp up testing, genome sequencing Centre writes to States

Centre on Thursday advised all states to maintain a strict watch, take pre-emptive measures and increase testing to control any emerging spread of Covid infection. Centre has asked States not lower their guard and continue working towards building on progress made thus far to bring pandemic situation under

control. It also advised States to continue implementation and monitoring of necessary measures for prompt and effective management of Covid-19 and to ensure compliance with advisories issued by the Health ministry. Out of the total 7,240 new cases in the last 24 hours, 81% of cases have been reported from four states - Maharashtra, Delhi, Kerala and Karnataka. “Given the significance of adequate testing in early identification of cases and providing an accurate picture of the level of infection spread, it is required that states/UTs must ensure

high level of testing in all such areas that are reporting new cases/cluster of cases,” Union Health Secretary Rajesh Bhushan said. The Centre has also asked the states to enhance monitoring of Influenza like Illness (ILI) in all health facilities on a regular basis for detecting early warning signals of infection spread. “Genome sequencing of prescribed samples of international passengers as well as collection of samples from Sentinel sites and local cluster of new Covid cases is equally important. Such samples must be sent promptly,” Centre said.

ZB (AMN) rejects claim of endorsing ‘Agreed Position’ Presidential poll on July 18, result on July 21 DIMAPUR, JUN 9 (NPN): Zeliangrong Baudi (Assam, Manipur, Nagaland) has rejected the claim of Zeliangrong civil society organisations of Assam, Manipur and Nagaland endorsing the “Agreed Position”, which was signed between the Working Committee (WC) of the NNPGs and Government of India on November 17, 2017. In a joint statement, ZB(AMN) president Akhang Kamei, ZB(N) president CR Zeliang and ZB (A) president Pauheu stated that the recent consultative meeting of Zeliangrong CSOs with NNPGs held in Dimapur on June 7, 2022 and “its subsequent press statement

published by WC does not carry or represent the voice of Zeliangrong people.” They expressed regret that “some of our Zeliangrong CSOs”, who attended the meeting, was “assumed to have endorsed and supported the Working Committee of NNPGs ‘Agreed position’ as reflected in medias.” They said that the Zeliangrong people, since the inception of “Indo-Naga” political talk, neither endorsed, supported nor subscribed to any particular party or faction till date. The Baudis said it was their “constant view” that unity and collective effort of all Nagas was prerogative to finding pragmatic Naga so-

lution. They said they have reiterated their stand time and again of “our peoples’ support for early and inclusive settlement of the protracted Naga political issues while keeping alongside the Zeliangrong political aspiration and movement intact.” Further, the Baudi said that the “supposed endorsement and support of Zeliangrong to NNPGs ‘Agreed Position’ and its subsequent status paper as reflected contradicts the political outlook of the Zeliangrong people.” ZB (AMN) stated that its central executive council neither discussed nor authorised any of its frontal organizations on the issue. In this regard, the Bau-

di cautioned Zeliangrong individual/s or CSOs to refrain from “making/giving any undue press statement” that could confuse, disturb or create undesirable implication “at this stage when the progress of Indo-Naga” talk was at its crucial momentum for final settlement.” Baudi further clarified that member participants of Zeliangrong CSOs of the said consultative meeting were not officially commissioned to represent the people nor did they carry the voice of the Zeliangrong people on the Naga political issues. “Therefore, the press statement is devoid of any implied or deduced meaning,” the Baudi stated.

NEW DELHI, JUN 9 (PTI): Election for the next President of India will be held on July 18 in which 4,809 electors comprising MPs and MLAs will vote to elect incumbent Ram Nath Kovind’s successor, the Election Commission announced on Thursday. Announcing the poll schedule, Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar said that the term of President Ram Nath Kovind is coming to end on July 24. As per the poll schedule, notification for the President election will be issued on June 15 and the last day of filing nomination will be June 29. Scrutiny of nomination papers will be held on June 30 and last day of

withdrawal of nomination papers will be July 2. Polling, if required, will be held on July 18 and counting will take place on July 21. Kumar said that no political party will be allowed to issue any kind of whip. Voting for presidential election will take place in Parliament and the premises of state assemblies, while Rajya Sabha Secretary-General will be the returning officer. Normally, MPs cast their vote in Parliament and MLAs in their respective state assemblies. Total 776 MPs and 4033 MLAs will vote. Total value of votes is 10,86,431. Value of votes of MLAs is 5,43,231 and MPs are 5,43,200.

Meanwhile, setting in motion the process for the 16th presidential election, EC said anyone desiring to contest would need 50 electors as proposers and 50 others as seconders -- a move aimed at weeding out nonserious candidates in these polls that once saw nominations getting rejected for 36 out of total 37 candidates. Besides, the candidate would need to deposit an amount of Rs 15,000 as security. Among other criteria, the security deposit was increased from Rs 2,500 to Rs 15,000 in 1997, when the total numbers of proposers and seconders were also increased from 10 each earlier. K Y M C
