UN climate report ‘code red for humanity’
Global temp to How is this global warming rise by more than 2 different to before? degree Celsius by It is warming almost everywhere 2100: IPCC report NEW DELHI, AUG 9 (AGENCIES): A UN climate report that predicts quicker global warming than anticipated just three years ago “must sound a death knell” for coal, oil and gas and is “code red” for humanity, according to the UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres. In another grim reminder of the threat posed by global warming, the Inter-governmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) on Monday warned that the average global temperatures would rise by more than 2 degree Celsius by 2100 compared to pre-industrial times unless “deep reductions” in greenhouse gas emissions are initiated immediately. IPCC released the first part of its 6th Assessment Report (AR6), its latest evaluation of the state of earth’s climate, the changes happening therein, and the impacts these are having on the planet, and life forms. The voluminous assessment reports are the most widely-accepted scientific opinion on the status

of earth’s climate. The first part of AR6, which presents scientific evidence for climate change, says that global temperatures had already risen by about 1.1 degree Celsius from pre-industrial times, a reference to the period between 1850 and 1900, and warns that a 1.5 degree Celsius warming was likely to be achieved before 2040. The stated objective of 2015 Paris Agreement, the international architecture to fight climate change, is to limit temperature increase to within 2 degree Celsius
from pre-industrial times, hopefully within 1.5 degrees Celsius itself. Scientists say a temperature rise beyond 2 degree Celsius would result in catastrophic and irreversible changes that would make it difficult for human beings and other species to survive. AR6 says that even if very wide-ranging and ambitious cuts in greenhouse gas emissions are initiated immediately, the temperature rise was expected to cross 1.5 degree Celsius, and reach 1.6 degree Celsius, before being reined back to 1.5 degrees Celsius.
Limiting the temperature rise to 1.5 degree Celsius, or even 2 degree Celsius, would be “beyond reach”, unless “immediate, rapid and large-scale” reductions in greenhouse gas emissions takes place, the report says. The report says that there was now “unequivocal” evidence to say that global warming was being caused by human activities. It says “multiple lines of evidence” now supports this. The AR6 says that observed changes in earth’s climate, induced by global warming were unprecedented in thousands, and in some cases hundreds of thousands of years. Some of these changes, like sea-level rise, or glacier melt, would remain irreversible over hundreds of thousands of years. Sea-levels had already risen by about 20 cm, on an average, in the last 100 years, and are likely to rise further by 30 cm to one metre, depending on future emissions. The rising temperatures were expected to result in longer, more intense, and more frequent extreme events. Heat waves as heavy rainfall events were likely to increase. “In the next 20 years, global warming is expected to reach or exceed 1.5 degree Celsius above the 1800s. However, if

DIMAPUR, AUG 9 (NPN): Taking strong exception to designer Ritika Mittal’s launch of Mora 2021, the Chakhesang Women Welfare Society (CWWS) has stated that despite serving notice and warnings, she has gone ahead with her Mora collection, which uses Chakhesang textile “without consent and correct accreditation.” CWWS executive director Nezelu Nyekha stated that Ritika was informed to stop using Kuzhami in her credits since Kuzhami referred to 14 Kuzha/Khuzha speaking villages among Chakhesangs in Nagaland. CWWS said she had worked only with two-- Lasumi and
Zapami villages, but refused to name those two villages and even acknowledge NEN, Mora’s facilitating partner. It also said that she refused to comply with the terms and conditions offered by the Chakhesang apex frontal organisations, and instead challenged the community and invited them to visit her in Punjab. CWWS stated that she had even gone to the extent of stating on social media that her project created the spelling of indigenous Chakhesang word “Thebvo”. “She has also used several of our other indigenous words to give identity to her clothing with no permission from the

CWWS affirmed that Ritika had no right to “re-define our societal and traditional operations according to her self- interests.” It further said that she had not right to represent Chakhesang community in any local, national or international platform. Chakhesang frontal organisations have warned Mora to immediately stop using any of its textiles, traditional designs and motifs, failing which appropriate measures would be taken. Meanwhile, the community declared that Ritika or any individual representing Mora would not be allowed to enter Phek district.
we rapidly reduce greenhouse gas emissions, if we can reach global net zero CO2 emissions around 2050, it is extremely likely that we can keep global warming well below 2 degrees. If we do this, it is more likely than not that temperature would gradually decline to below or around 1.5 degree Celsius by the end of this century, with a temporary overshoot of not more than 0.1 degree Celsius,” Valerie Masson-Delmotte, cochair of the working group-I, which has produced this first part of AR6, said. “If global greenhouse gas emissions remain around today’s levels in the coming decades, we would reach 2 degrees of global warming by the middle of this century,” she said. “With every additional amount of global warming, we will see greater changes in climate. Every additional half degree of warming will cause increase in the intensity and frequency of hot extremes, heavy precipitation and drought. At 2 degrees, heat extremes would more often reach critical tolerance thresholds for agri and human health. At a global scale, extreme daily rainfall events would intensify by about 7% for each additional degree Celsius of global warming,” she said.

Naga Council impasse: Rivals trade charges, counter-charges
Objection to selection process NCD responds to 5 tribal hohos DIMAPUR, AUG 9 (NPN): Controversies surrounding the elections to select the new team of office bearers of Naga Council Dimapur since early part of 2020 continues to rage as rivals hurl allegations at each other. The matter over formation of the election commission of NCD to conduct election of the president and office bearers had gone to court but after a series of rulings, it was then taken to the high court but later withdrawn as part of a deal to resolve the matter out of court. In the latest development, five tribal hohos- Pomai Hoho Dimapur (PHD); Mao Hoho Dimapur (MHD); Tangkhul Hoho Dimapur (THD); Western Chakhesang Hoho (WCH) and Rengma Hoho Dimapur (RHD)- have expressed resentment against the process of selecting Naga Council Dimapur (NCD) executives. In a joint press release, presidents of five hohos- Jotham (PHD), M. John Kape (MHD), Ayo Vashum (THD), Z Kepfelhou Koza (WCH) and Wanthang (RHD)- alleged that NCD did not follow the normal system while selecting new executives. It also claimed that the rival rejected some tribe councillors without any valid reason but due to their selfish motives. They emphasised that the system of selection/nomination/election was clearly enshrined in NCD constitution . The hohos said the system ought to be on the basis of consensus of all councillors nominated by the respective (Cont’d on p-8) tribal hohos.
Responding to the demand of five tribal hohos from Ao Senso Telogjem Dimapur (ASTD) and Naga Council Dimapur (NCD) to explain stand on MoU signed on May 6, 2021, the NCD Monday clarified that the MoU was signed under the aegis of ASTD without any conditions. In a press release, NCD president Etsungmomo Kikon and general secretary Thsapongkhyu Sangtam also clarified that there was no discussion for re-induction of earlier nominated members on withdrawal of the court case. NCD said it had written to the five tribal presidents Western Chakesang Hoho Dimapur, Mao Hoho Dimapur, Poumai Hoho Dimapur, Tangkhul Hoho Dimapur and Rengma Public Organisation Dimapur requesting them to nominate fresh members to represent their tribes on or before July 15, 2021. However, NCD said that the give tribes rejected its request letter through local media on July 15, 2021 without any correspondence or consultation with NCD. Further, NCD said that the deadline for submissions was extended to July 22, 2021 as per request by Tenyimi Union Dimapur (through Tenyimi Tribal Councillors) and ASTD. Thereafter, the council said ASTD had sent two fresh members-N. Joseph Lemtur and Imtisangba Aier-who took oath as Councillor on July 26, 2021 in naga council office. However, it said that WCHD, THD, MHD and PHD renominated the same members/persons. Therefore, NCD said it did not accept those renominated members. (Cont’d on p-8)
