residence. The colonial-era state mansion is one of Sri Lanka’s key symbols of state power and officials said Rajapaksa’s departure raised questions as to whether he intended to remain in office. “We are awaiting instructions,” a top civil servant told AFP. “We still don’t know where he is, but we know he is with the Sri

Soon after the crowd stormed the presidential palace, Rajapaksa’s nearby office also fell into the hands of protesters. Security forces attempted to disperse the huge crowds that had mobbed Colombo’s administrative district. Three people were hospitalised after being shot along with 36 others who suffered breathing difficulties following intense tear gas barrages, a spokeswoman for the main hospital in Colombo said. BA.2.75 not severe, won’t bring fourth wave: INSACOG co-chair

NEW DELHI, JUL 9 (AGENCIES): Omicron s u b - va r i a n t , BA . 2 . 7 5 , which is driving the latest Covid-19 surge in India, is not severe or brought serious diseases and risk of death despite being more transmissible than BA.2 responsible for the second Covid wave in India. Speaking to The New Indian Express, Dr N K Arora, co-chair of the Indian SARS-CoV-2 Genomics Consortium (INSACOG), said the cases are not being reported from any cluster or any one particular area, despite the transmission (Cont’d on p-8) and efficiency of the virus

being 20-30 per cent more as compared to BA.2. “The new sub-variant has not led to any major increase or expansion of the case pool or risk of severe disease. These cases are all spread out. I would be worried if they were occurring in one or two districts. It is happening in a scattered manner. This means it is not something which is either spreading too fast or causing too many severe cases,” said Arora, head of the Covid-19 Working Group of the National Technical Advisory Group on Immunisation (NTAGI).

TOKYO, JUL 9 (AP): The body of Japan’s former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe was returned to Tokyo on Saturday after he was fatally shot during a campaign speech in western Japan a day earlier. Abe was attacked in the city of Nara and airlifted to a local hospital but died of blood loss despite emergency treatment including massive blood transfusions. Police arrested the attacker, a former member of Japan’s navy, at the scene on suspicion of murder. Police confiscated the homemade gun he used, and several others were later found at his apartment.

The attacker told investigators he plotted the shooting because he believed rumours that Abe was connected to an organisation that he resents, according to police. Japanese media reported that the man had

developed hatred toward a religious group his mother was devoted to. The reports did not specify the group. A black hearse carrying Abe’s body and accompanied by his wife, Akie, arrived at his home in Tokyo’s upscale residential

NOA vice president decries lack of transparency DIMAPUR, JUL 9 (NPN): In a shocking disclosure that exposed how the Nagaland Olympic Association (NOA) is being managed, its vice president and former DGP , K. Kire, Saturday expressed unhappiness over the lack of transparency where all the activities and decisions of the highest body of sports were being taken by “one or a few individuals” while keeping other members in the dark. In a press release, the K.Kire IPS(Retd) and NOA vice president, who is a renowned sportsperson having represented Naga-

land at the national level in football and badminton, said the association was in existence for many years but it was only through the efforts of present chief minister Neiphiu Rio as the president, that it was affiliated with Indian Olympic Association (IOA). As NOA, he said the first Olympic games was held at Chümoukedima in 2018 where all districts participated. Towards this, he said NOA advanced a lot of money to associations for participating in the event. While most of the associations submitted their

accounts after the event, he said it was disheartening that till December 11, 2020, when the new office bearers were elected, some individuals failed to submit their expenditure statements despite several reminders. He said the individuals took around Rs.70 to Rs 80 lakhs for the meet but had not submitted their accounts although it was not known if they have submitted to the new NOA treasurer. Kire said he, as then treasurer, had requested several times for an audit to be carried out, but there

was no response from the association. He also said the at one time, members were informed that association office would be housed in a minister’s building and that other rooms would be added for other associations. However, he expressed surprise when “suddenly a new NOA building had come up” and wondered how many NOA members knew about it. Citing another instance where decisions were taken without consultation of the entire NOA body, Kire said even the decision to establish the

Nagaland Police Sports Battalion(NPSB) was never discussed though he has no objection to the NPSB being established. In the light of the above, Kire said if the NOA was to function as an individual property, he would disassociate himself from it. Though not saying he was resigning, the NOA vice president said “…I like to work and associate myself where there is transparency for all and everyone is taken on board to ensure that a collective decision was taken unlike the present system.” (See p-6)

area of Shibuya, where many mourners waited and lowered their heads as the vehicle passed. Abe’s assassination ahead of Sunday’s parliamentary election shocked the nation and raised questions over whether security for the former prime minister was adequate. Police on Saturday said autopsy results showed that a bullet that entered Abe’s upper left arm damaged arteries beneath both collar bones, causing fatal massive bleeding. Some observers who watched videos of the assassination on social media and television noted a lack of attention in the open

space behind Abe as he spoke. A former Kyoto prefectural police investigator, Fumikazu Higuchi, said the footage suggested security was sparse at the event and insufficient for a former prime minister. “It is necessary to investigate why security allowed Yamagami to freely move and go behind Mr. Abe,” Higuchi told a Nippon TV talk show. Experts also said Abe was more vulnerable standing on the ground level, instead of atop a campaign vehicle, which reportedly could not be arranged because his visit to Nara was hastily planned the day before.

Japanese Encephalitis claims 8 lives in Assam G U WA H AT I , J U L 9 (IANS): At least eight people died of Japanese Encephalitis (JE) in Assam in the past nine days while 82 were infected, prompting the Health Department to seek authorities to set up District Rapid Response Teams (DRRT) to keep a close watch on the situation. JE and malaria kill many people in Assam every year, specifically during the monsoon season that usually starts in May and stretches to October. According to the National Health Mission (NHM), since July 1, at least eight people have died

and 82 people have fallen ill after being infected by the vector-borne diseases. Principal Secretary, Health, Avinash Joshi and NHM Director Dr. M S Lakshmi Priya on Saturday conducted a meeting, through video conferencing, with the district authorities and asked them to constitute DRRTs by July 16 to deal with the situation. The NHM has also issued a standard operating procedure and guidelines to tackle the situation arising with the outbreak of the JE. Last year, at least 40 deaths were reported due to JE, officials said. K Y M C

Women organisations oppose proposed Tripura govt abruptly transfers Chief Secy Kumar Alok alternative rail route in Dima Hasao

HAFLONG (ASSAM), JUL 9 (PTI): Several women organisations in Assam’s Dima Hasao district have expressed their strong opposition to proposed alternative rail route from LankaSilchar via Chandranathpur, claiming that it will lead to “another mass destruction” of the local environment. They claimed that the massive damage caused to the Lumding-Silchar broad gauge section by rains and landslides last month has exposed the “unscientific” project executed by the railways previously, and the alternative route will also face similar risks. The existing section was badly damaged by heavy torrential rains and massive landslides in midMay this year with breaches in more than 60 locations, resulting in disruption of rail communication to Tripura, Mizoram, Manipur and southern Assam. The route is yet to be fully restored. In a letter to Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw on Friday, the organisations objected to the government

decision to introduce alternative rail-route from Lanka (Hojai district) to Silchar (Cachar) via Chandranathpur (also in Cachar). They claimed that an amount of Rs 43.23 crore has been sanctioned for final location survey. They demanded revocation of the decision with immediate effect as it was taken “arbitrarily and without taking into account the stakeholders and local government of our district”. The entire district is facing destruction of all kinds due to “complete technical fault committed by the Railway Authority while the existing LumdingSilchar broad gauge conversion project was carried out”, the letter, signed by Dimasa Mothers’ Association, Dibarai Mahila Samiti, Zeme Mothers’ Association, Dimasa Mahila Samiti and Gorkha Naan Sangharsh Sangh, asserted. They alleged that the railways had failed to apply scientific knowledge in the existing LumdingSilchar section, which had

destroyed and fragmented the eco-system of the hill district. They claimed that the Commissioner of Railway Safety, had suggested to the Railways to engage experts in the field of Geo-technology to take preventive measures in 2015 itself. But instead of rectifying the defects, the route was opened for passenger train movement the same year. A PIL was recently filed in the Gauhati High Court regarding the ‘failure’ to implement suggestions given by the Commissioner and the authorities have been given four weeks time by the court to file their response. They claimed that the authorities had ignored an official report of 2009 that had pointed to difficulties and future risks while undertaking the gauge conversion work of the existing section. If the proposed alternative route is constructed, it will once again affect the natural surroundings of the flora and fauna of the district, which had already

Cong MP accuses BJP of ‘close links’ Need to promote indigenous NGT directs illegal coke plants in with people caught in terror activities sports: Biswajit Daimary M’laya to pay a fine of over Rs 4.75 cr G U WA H AT I , J U L 9 (PTI): Congress MP Ranjeet Ranjan on Saturday accused the ruling BJP of maintaining ‘close links’ with individuals caught in terror activities, including in Assam. She maintained that while the BJP loses no opportunity to preach nationalism to Indians, the association with such individuals has led the Congress to question the saffron party. “The Congress does not believe in playing politics over serious national issues like terrorism,” Ranjan said, addressing a press conference here. “However multiple revelations of close links between the BJP and individuals caught in terror activities force us to ask some straight questions of a ruling party that loses no opportunity to preach to Indians about nationalism,” the Rajya Sabha member added. She pointed that militant-turned-politician Niranjan Hojai is currently a BJP leader in the state, even though he was convicted by a NIA court in 2017 in a case relating to diverting government money to fund terror activities. Ranjan said there were numerous such individuals

Ranjeet Ranjan linked with the saffron party, including the most-recent instance of a BJP worker Mohammad Riyaz Attari turning out to be one of the accused in the Kanhaiya Lal murder in Udaipur. “He had joined the BJP in the presence of a senior local leader. Media reports state that Attari was employed by the sonin-law of the BJP’s Leader of the Opposition in the Rajasthan Vidhan Sabha, Gulab Chand Kataria,” she claimed. A Lashkar-e-Taiba terrorist Talib Hussain Shah, who had been captured by locals, was revealed to be a BJP office-bearer in Jammu and Kashmir, she pointed out. When arrested, he had been planning attacks on the Amarnath Yatra, the Congress leader claimed. “In 2017, the Madhya Pradesh Anti-Terrorism Squad arrested the BJP IT

Cell member Dhruv Saxena along with 10 accomplices for spying for the Inter Services Intelligence (ISI) Directorate. The spy ring had set up an illegal telephone exchange to facilitate espionage,” Ranjan said. Two years later Balram Singh, a Bajrang Dal leader from Madhya Pradesh, was arrested in a terror funding case, she added. The Congress leader also accused the BJP of knowingly giving a ticket to Masood Azhar’s acolyte Mohammad Farooq Khan to contest the Srinagar municipal election. She also pointed out that dreaded terrorist Masood Azhar who was released by the BJP-led government in 1999 during the Kandahar hijacking. Azhar went on to found the Jaishe-Muhammad terror group that was responsible for the 2001 Parliament attack and the 2008 Mumbai attacks. “The Jaish also masterminded for the 2019 Pulwama attack in which 44 CRPF personnel died after 200 kg of high explosive including RDX somehow made its way past multiple security checkpoints. Why an inquiry into Pulwama has not been held remains a mystery,” the Congress leader querried.

Biswajit Daimary GUWAHATI, JUL 9 (PTI): Assam Legislative Assembly Speaker Biswajit Daimary on Saturday called for promotion of indigenous sports so that these may receive recognition in the international arena. He also underscored the role of media in popularising indigenous sports as well as in promoting sportspersons so that they can avail proper training facilities and other benefits from the authorities, clubs or other organisations. Speaking at the inauguration of year-long celebration of centenary year of sports journalism in the state, Daimary said, “The indigenous sports are rooted and linked with the people of a particular area. There is a greater need to promote and popularise these.” He maintained that with proper thrust, many such disciplines have the potential of not only getting international recognition but also being included in Olympic games.

Daimary cited the example of the traditional sport of the Bodo tribe, Khomlainai (wrestling), which has drawn interest from several countries. “There are about 10-12 countries already competing in this sport and international tournaments are being held. Kokrajhar had also hosted an international championship a few years back,” he said. The Bodo leader added that it was only sporting event where Bodo language is used on ground during matches at the international level. “There are so many indigenous sports that can draw international participation. We just need more publicity for these and sports journalists play a crucial role in it,” the Speaker said. Daimary also highlighted the role of sports journalists in bringing to fore talented players and ensuring that deserving players can benefit from facilities meant for them. He said, “Very often, our players are left with limited or no means to continue their training and pursuing their sport due to lack of facilities. There are now government schemes also for deserving and upcoming sportspersons and the media can play a vital role in creating awareness of these.”

Minister Rajnath Singh will launch the ship on July 15 at the GRSE Main Complex here on the bank of Hooghly river,” the GRSE official told journalists. The warship is in the final stages of construction and is undergoing paint shop work. The first P17A frigate built by GRSE was launched in December 2020 by Madhulika Rawat, the wife of then Chief of Defence Staff General Bipin Rawat. P17A ships are guided-missile frigates, each of which is 149 metres long with a displacement of approximately 6,670 tonnes and a speed of 28 knots, the official said.

Ajoy Kumar

of the accused in the Kanhaiya Lal’s murder in Udaipur, was a BJP worker. “He had joined the BJP in the presence of a senior local leader. He was seen attending numerous party programmes in the presence of senior BJP leaders,” Kumar claimed. Recently it was revealed that Lashkar-eTaiba terrorist Talib Hussain Shah, who had been cap-

tured in Jammu and Kashmir by the local residents, was a BJP office-bearer there. Before the arrest, he had been planning attacks on the Amarnath Yatra, he said. He also alleged that Irfan Khan, accused of masterminding the murder of Amravati chemist Umesh Kolhe, has close links with independent MP Navneet Rana and her MLA husband Ravi Rana. Khan is known to have campaigned and sought votes for the Ranas, he

added. However, the Rana couple has earlier denied the allegation of being linked to the chemist murder case accused. Former BJP leader from Kashmir, Tariq Ahmad Mir, was arrested in 2020 for procuring weapons for Hizbul Mujahideen commander Naveed Babu. Naveed Babu had previously been arrested with DSP Davinder Singh and accused of supplying weapons to terrorists. The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has confirmed that Mir is

an associate of Davinder Singh. The truth would have come out had the Davinder Singh inquiry been carried through to its conclusion, but it was halted midway, Kumar claimed. In 2017, the Madhya Pradesh Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) had arrested BJP’s IT Cell member Dhruv Saxena along with 10 accomplices for spying for the Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) Directorate, Pakistan’s intelligence agency.

P

A fading tapestry

oliticians in India love to quote the Lakshman Rekha at separate moments with dramatically different perceptions and to suit what is convenient at a given point of time. ‘Lakshman- Rekha’ (LR) an imaginary dividing line of what is do-able and what is not do-able. It is a reference about a line drawn by Lakshmana around the dwelling he shares with his brother Rama and Rama’s wife Sita at Panchavati. Politicians, especially those in power, quote the Lakshman Rekha at separate moments with dramatically different perceptions and to suit what is convenient at a given point of time. The recent fiasco involving the Punjab Police, Haryana Police and the Delhi Police has drawn attention to the need to respect the `Lakshman Rekha`, in order to ensure respect for the fundamental tenets of federal governance. In this case, the complaint is lodged against Bagga - a BJP leader from Delhi, for the comments he made against Arvind Kejriwal, the AAP chief and the Chief Minister of Delhi. The other is over IT cases filed against opposition politicians especially those who have criticised the government at the Centre. However, the imaginary LR boundary fades when the same ‘corrupt’ politicians join the ruling party. The worst transgression of crossing the boundary is when politicians use religion to spread division and exploit this for electoral gains. Politics and religion make a deadly concoction and a poison to the spirit of federal pluralism and secularism. Politicians in India today are perhaps among the most religious lot in the world. Much of the speeches made by politicians largely include mention of religion especially of the majoritarian kind. Really, a sad demise of secular credentials and fundamental values. From Gujarat to Delhi, and from Karnataka to Assam, communalism is rife. The modus operandi is to systematically target minority groups where religion is evidently being used as a tool to polarise India and this is quite unfortunate in a nation of billion-plus people. If the Congress and so-called secular political parties slammed the BJP and RSS of being anti-constitutional and procommunal; the grand old party claims to be ‘secular’ but unashamed of playing vote bank politics to add to polarisation of the nation. Again, when Congress has been attacking Modi and his party of using Hindu religion to win votes from the majority community, Congress leader and prime-minister-in-waiting Rahul Gandhi has been visiting mandirs, offering prayers and proudly(naively)proclaiming to the world that he is a Shiv Bakht or follower of Lord Shiva. This shows a disturbing trend in India where politicians are deliberately focusing on their religious identity. On the other hand, religious leaders are coming out with their political choices to further their mutual interests. In this course, the dividing line between religion and politics is becoming more and more invisible thereby leading to a situation where religion embraces political discourse instead of spiritual essence and politics contain religious rhetoric instead of debate on problems of people. The radicalism in the name of faith and the sense of otherness will keep on digging deep, and explode in a catastrophe. It time for saner elements to take a call and learn from the polarising effect of fundamentalism. The enlightened and conscientious need to also take the call to pull India out of the mess it is in.

DailyDevotion Will You Examine Yourself?

Joshua said to the people, “You cannot serve the Lord…” —Joshua 24:19 Do you have even the slightest reliance on anything or anyone other than God? Is there a remnant of reliance left on any natural quality within you, or on any particular set of circumstances? Are you relying on yourself in any manner whatsoever regarding this new proposal or plan which God has placed before you? Will you examine yourself by asking these probing questions? It really is true to say, “I cannot live a holy life,” but you can decide to let Jesus Christ make you holy. “You cannot serve the Lord…”— but you can place yourself in the proper position where God’s almighty power will flow through you. Is your relationship with God sufficient for you to expect Him to exhibit His wonderful life in you? “The people said to Joshua, ‘No, but we will serve the Lord!’ ” (Joshua 24:21). This is not an impulsive action, but a deliberate commitment. We tend to say, “But God could never have called me to this. I’m too unworthy. It can’t mean me.” It does mean you, and the more weak and feeble you are, the better. The person who is still relying and trusting in anything within himself is the last person to even come close to saying, “I will serve the Lord.” We say, “Oh, if only I really could believe!” The question is, “Will I believe?” No wonder Jesus Christ placed such emphasis on the sin of unbelief. “He did not do many mighty works there because of their unbelief” (Matthew 13:58). If we really believed that God meant what He said, just imagine what we would be like! Do I really dare to let God be to me all that He says He will be?

Boris Johnson: ‘In politics no one is remotely indispensable’

S

candal-ridden Boris Johnson resigned as British Prime Minister as he dramatically lost the support of majority of his ministers and party’s lawmakers on the 8th July, 2022.Bowing to the pressure of more number of ministers quitting their ministries; lawm a kers a nd the British public questioning his misgovernance kept mounting pressure shouting “Boris should go”, an isolated and powerless Boris Johnson having no other option except quitting from the job. In his resignation speech he said that “I know that many people are relieved … and I want you to know how said I am to be giving up the best job in the world. But them’s the break.” Boris Johnson a few months short of completing three years, won the general elections with a huge number of seats that gave him incredible mandate at the 2019 elections since 1979, but had to quit. His party abandoned him and those who voted for him were fed up as he was couched with bundles of lies and in the process broke the promises,

I

he made especially during coronavirus he outrightly violated the mandatory provisions which should h ave b e e n s t r i n ge n t ly followed brought an end to his leadership. Initially, the British public and the electorates went all out for Boris Johnson who they thought was a charismatic leader and a visionary who would take Britain to greater heights, but their hopes and dreams were shattered and thus came to a naught. Prior to leaving his office in his resignation speech, Boris Johnson which resonated his political experience said that “The reason I have fought so hard for the last few days to continue to deliver that mandate in person was not just because I wanted to do so but because I felt it was my job, my duty, my obligation to you to continue to do what we promised in 2019. It is painful not to be able to see through so many ideas and projects myself but, as we’ve seen at Westminster the herd is powerful, and when the herd moves, it moves,” Adding further, in politics, he said that no one is “remotely

indispensable” which convers many layers and exposes many meanings. They of course need to be nuanced and de-coded. In continuation he said that “No one is remotely indispensable and our brilliant and Darwinian system will produce another leader, equally committed to taking this country forward through tough times.” The observation made by Boris Johnson is vital and of valid that the “herd instinct of Westminster” for being forced out, saying he tried to persuade colleagues against changing governments … when the economic scene is difficult in the UK and internationally.” At the same time the internal revolt within his party MPs and cabinet colleagues carried out against Boris Johnson concerns his integrity and honesty that led many of his party’s MPs to resign and abandon. Blatant lies and gross denials had angered his colleagues and the British public. Nevertheless, a number of lessons can be learnt. Apparently, parallels can also be drawn to the current Indian political terrain when

we carefully analyze Boris Johnson’s sudden exit from the British political scene. Interestingly his resignation speech adds more intriguing observation and numerous comparisons to the current Indian political scenario. We, in India follow the Westminster system which is a democratic parliamentary system of gover nment modelled after the United Kingdom. Over and above, usage of ‘herd instinct’ is a striking analogy that goes closer to what we have observed in Maharashtra how Uddhav Thacker y was deposed by his cabinet ministers and party MLA who ditched him and moved towards Eknath Shinde who led the revolt by aligning with BJP. As a result, he became the chief minister with the help of BJP and thus formed the government. We also have other examples classic examples that happened in the recent past in some other states as well. Resort, defection, poaching and toppling in Indian politics have become a new normal portraying ‘herd instinct’. Boris Johnson said, “Herd is powerful, when the herd

ndian subcontinent was under colonial European(read British) rule for close to two centuries. During this period the colonial forces siphoned enormous wealth out of the then most wealthy region of the world by their colonial cum capitalist mechanism causing miser y to our people. But their tyrannical rule never went unchallenged. M u t i n i e s, r e vo l u t i o n s demonstrations, agitations and opposition to the colonial rule were always there all over the British Indian subcontinent. Many sacrifices were made, many lives laid down at the altar of freedom. We know of anti colonial movements led by Bengali,Punjabi,Marathi and most other major Indian population. Rarely do we come across a story of such serious movement from people of minor denominations who are t e r m e d d i f f e r e n t ly i n different places and under different circumstances. They are named A d iva s h i s, s c h e d u l e d tribes, tribals or minor ethnicities. However, you can not discount their contribution to the anti colonial movements. By nature, they are freedom loving and they always kept on fighting against any foreign aggression to remain secluded and happy with their primitive lifestyle. But there are instances of organised opposition to the British rule apart from the innumerable sporadic fights. Today we are going to discuss the heroism of such an amazing leading lady of Naga origin. She had been given the title of Daughter of the Hills and the Naga Rani Gaidinliu by none other than Pundit Jawaharlal Nehru when he had a chance to meet the imprisoned revolutionary lady in 1937 in the Shillong prison We may come back to that later. In the process of their colonial pursuit the British East India Company and later the British crown swallowed up the main productive lands of India first. But the regions of smaller population and difficult terrain like the North Easter territories were not ignored. The colonial powers started spreading to these areas. Ahom and Manipuri Kings were given certain type of independent powers under British sovereignty. Some other areas like

Naga hills,Kachar hills, Mizo hills, etc were put under direct British r ules under appointed British commissioners. The British authorities tried to promulgate their rules, taxes and business systems which were not at all acceptable to the Nagas. Moreover, the authorities were out and out in favour of conversation of these hill people to Christianity. This ,in turn, put the Nagas against Kukis and Mizos who already have accepted different denominations of Christianity. Even the age old Manipuri Vaishnavism was also under the scanner of the Nagas. In 1905 Haipou Jadonang was born in a Rongmei Naga family. His family was influential in that area of Manipur where he was born. The area was under Naga domination. He grew up to be a very spirited self respecting youngman who was very concious about his people and their fate and future. He thought, with the advent of Christianity and Vaishnavism their minor populations faith and existence will be in danger. They will simply go extinct. He thought beauty lies in Unity in diversity. All minor entities and ethnicities have their right to exist with their distinctive culture, custom, language and literature. He started preaching Heraka, their age old animist faith. He became a spiritual leader of Zeliangrong Nagas,a group of several sects of Naga people close to each other having very little differences. This obviously made the other people of the area antagonistic, since they were already cooperating with the British powers and were getting financially and otherwise benefitted. Spread of Christianity was also at a stake. Eventually the Heraka movement of Jadonang became a political movement too apart from it’s spiritual aspect. At a very young age Jadonang became a hero to the Nagas of Tamenlang area of Manipur. His cousin,Gaidinliu who was born in 1915 was a spirited girl too. She was an ardent follower of her brother and actively joined Heraka movement at a very young age of 13 years only. Once she joined, she was immediately drafted into a spearheading role of the spiritual cum political Heraka movement which intended to do away with

the British oppressive rule. The Naga clans of Heraka movement planned and acted to drive the Brits away from parts of Manipur and adjacent Nagaland and Assam where they inhabited. Led by Jadonang the movement gained momentum and Gaidinliu was becoming a driving force of the movement. They encouraged the Naga population not to pay any tax to the British authorities and drove away British cronies who were locals engaged in business and money lending, bringing cash to British treasury. Consequently they came at daggers drawn with the authorities and armed struggles followed. The Nagas saw various successes in small skirmishes. Finally in 1931 Jadonang the leader was apprehended and summarily executed under concocted charges of killing some Manipuri traders. Automatically the leadership came to Gaidinliu the confidante of the supreme Heraka leader Jadonang. Being the apparent heir she took up the challenge and kept the movement alive. At the adolescent age of 16 she was the leader and was regarded amongst the Nagas as the incarnation of the goddess Cherachamlandin. She led her people in several battles and was reportedly building a wooden fort. By then the British came down on this movement with full brut force. Gaidinliu was arrested and was given the verdict of life imprisonment. She spent her jail life at different places being transferred from Imphal to Shillong to Tura et al. Meantime, her bravery and anti British colonial spirit became well known. In the 1930s the British were under heavy pressure of political agitations as well as armed struggle for leaving India. At the same time the WW2 was also knocking at the door. So,they started negotiating with Indian politicians and limited power was shared with the local political parties. In 1937 Pundit Nehru met the brave Naga lady freedom fighter in Shillong jail. He hailed her as the Daughter of the Hills and called her Rani Gaidinliu. Since then she has become the Naga Rani.Nehru promised her to work for her release from the clutches of British jail which happened o n l y d u r i n g I n d i a ’s Independence from the

British rule. After Independence too she followed her earlier path of Naga nationalism a n d w a s ve h e m e n t l y opposed to conversion of the Naga tribes from their original Animistic faith. However she was against the politics of M NC that professed secession from India. She rather was a proponent of a special Zeliangrong Administrative Unit for the Nagas within the Indian Union. Thus she became an enemy of both the MNC and the proponents of Christianity amongst the Nagas. For her safety she had to remain underground from 1960. Those times were volatile as pro secession movement in the area were ver y strong. It took several years and in 1963 Nagaland was recognised and organised as a separate state of India having defined autonomy. The insurgency gradually reduced By 1966 she came back to normal life in the open and remained as a leading social and political figure in Manipur and Nagaland. She ha d a lways been regarded highly as a leading Freedom Fighter against the British rule imbibed by patriotism. Unfortunately in her childhood she could not get any formal education due to lack of educational facilities in the area. Nevertheless she was self educated and a worthy leader of her people. She had been honoured by the Government of India as a freedom fighter with the following honours: Tamra Patra Vivekananda Seva Award Padma Bhusan Birsa Munda Award (Posthumous). Indian Government has also released commemorative stamp and coin in her honour. Rani Gaidinliu remains one of the most celebrated freedom fighters out of the minor ethnicities of India. Our salute to this great Freedom Fighter of India from the British oppressive rule. Mr Pradip Kumar Dutta The writer is a Masters in Engineering. He writes regularly in Bangladeshi, Indian, Srilankan and at times in London newspapers on people, freedom struggle, environmental issues, traveling and fellowship amongst people.

moves, it moves” which means it is so forceful and so nobody can stop. ‘Herd mentality’ is so dynamic and persuasive that once the herd decides who they should follow they just keep moving. Recently in the Maharashtra episode the defectors of the faction belonging to Eknath Shinde were taken to different locations such as Gujarat, Assam and Goa. A close semblance to what happened to Boris Johnson with some difference. What happened to the Boris Johnson was indeed a direct rebellion that has been simmering for some time. The process and the outcome were clear, straight and as expected. While on the other in India parliamentary works the way. There are many other factors involved in the defection, poaching, money, positions and other bargains. Therefore, Boris Johnson’s resignation speech is vital and important. More specifically his utterance is the striking point that “In politics no one is remotely indispensable”. It thus becomes a reminder to all

shades of politicians be it totalitarian or autocrat or democrat no one is indispensable meaning everyone is dispensable however powerful. The timings and modus operandi is will be sudden and no one knows when. In such contexts specificities, predicting definitive periodization such 2024, 2034, 2044 or 2054 for the existence of political parties and continuance of leaders in power shall never be taken for granted because history offers us ample lessons. Recently the episode of Boris Johnson who won in thumping majority must have thought of completing his term as PM of Great Britain and may have planned for one more or many more, but collapsed all of a sudden without completing one full term. Everyone vies in politics to become leaders because it is the best job where once you become the leader everything follows without asking but in the process as Edward Abbey points out “Power attracts the worst and corrupts the best” – watch out. Vice President blows whistle on NOA

T

he Nagaland Olympic Association (NOA) was formed many years back but the official functioning star ted only after it was affiliated to the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) through the efforts of our present chief minister Neiphiu Rio who is also the president of NOA. The first and only Nagaland Olympic games and sports were held at Chümuokedima with almost all the disciplines in 2018 in which all the districts participated. Our association advanced a lot of money to the various associations so that they can prepare their teams to participate during the event. After the meet, most of the associations accounted their expenditure and submitted their expenditures/statements. It is disheartening to know that till December 2020 when new office bearers were elected, a few individuals did not submit their expenditure statements in spite of several reminders. In the meantime, I as the treasurer, had requested several times for an audit to be carried out but there was no response from the association. On the day when the new office bearers were elected on 11th December 2020, a paper supposed to be the audit, was brought to me for signature which I did sign. I may state that the individuals who took about INR 70/80 lakhs for the said Olympic meet in 2018 did not give their accounts until then while I don’t know if they have submitted to the new treasurer. I work with transparency and so I wanted an audit to be carried out but that was never done. I sent several messages in our Whatsapp group but nobody responded. I am proud to say that I was nominated as a co-opted member when NOA was first formed being headed by Lanu Toy. I started representing Nagaland in 1967 to Subroto Cup Delhi and we brought home the runners-up trophy. Throughout my college days, I played for my college and local clubs, besides representing Nagaland Civil Ser vices to Shillong and Kashmir. I also played for my university and state while I represented India to Turkey at the Badminton World Federation in September 2013. I am also a member of various clubs and associations. Therefore, I know the inns and outs of sports and its managements. Unfortunately what I find in this highest body of sports is that all its activities and decisions are being taken by one or a few individuals. The other members are kept in the dark. No collective decisions are taken or ever informed but only do so after decisions are taken. NOA appears to be working by a

dictator. Why officials are elected at all if their voice is not to be heard? N OA l o g o wa s a l s o circulated on Whatsapp on 9th March, 2022 when we didn’t even know who proposed or approved. This was not brought to the notice of the members. Is it not autocratic? Our president is a very busy person man but atleast meetings can be held among the office bearers and minutes could have been put up to the president. The Nagaland Sports Policy was reviewed by the department of Youth and Spor ts in 2018 after the department selected a few sportsmen from various fields and after a lot of discussions and consultations, we submitted the draft for approval. It is learnt that the same is still pending with whichever authority. Should we not have this policy ready in hand so that the sportsmen and women are aware of the rewards and incentives? Simply asking out boys and girls to do well in sports is not enough without any incentives. Why would they want to do well when there is no incentive at all? And yet we all say do well for our state. On 11th December 2020 when the last NOA annual general meeting was held, we were told that the office of the association would be housed in one of the minister’s bungalow and that rooms will be added for the other associations also. Suddenly a new NOA building had come up and we find this magnificent building. How many of the NOA office bearers knew of this? I am not the only one. A friend wanted to file an RTI on this and asked me about the previous owner of the building, the cost of the building etc etc. It was very embarrassing for me but I requested him not to do so since it’s to be a sports building. But then we had never discussed about buying this building, we don’t even know the cost of the building, etc.etc. There again, someone had dreamed it up and took action by himself or themselves. N a g a l a n d Po l i c e S p o r t s Battalion is another issue which was never discussed in any of the forums. I am not against it but rather in the manner this issue had gone around. For reasons mentioned above if the NOA is to function as an individual property, I for one will disassociate myself from it, not that it’s going to make any difference but I like to work and associate myself where there is transparency for all and everyone is taken on board to ensure that a collective decision was taken unlike the present system. K.Kire IPS(Retd), vice president of NOA & former DGP of Nagaland

March against ‘attacks on Hindus’ in Delhi

NEW DELHI, JUL 9 (PTI): Roads in Lutyens’ Delhi were awash with saffron on Saturday as hundreds, including political leaders and seers, carrying the tricolour and flags of various Hindu outfits participated in a ‘Sankalp March’ against “attacks on the community”. Chants of ‘Jai Shri Ram’, ‘Vande Mataram’ and ‘Bharat Mata ki Jai’ rent the air as the participants wound through main thoroughfares of the city as part of the march, which was organised by various Hindu groups, from the Mandi House area to Jantar Mantar. A public meeting at Jantar Mantar saw former North Delhi mayor Avtar Singh issue a warning that those who target Hindus “will not be spared”. Citing the recent killing of a tailor in Rajasthan’s Udaipur, Vishva Hindu Parishad international working president Alok Kumar claimed Hindus are being attacked everywhere. Tailor Kanhaiya Lal was hacked to death by two men with a cleaver at his shop in Udaipur’s Dhan

Five people have been arrested in connection with the killing. Addressing the gathering, Singh said, “Multiple Hindu groups have taken to the streets today for this ‘Sankalp March’. We are here to raise our voices against the attacks on Hindus. They cannot be targeted or attacked... Those who target us will not be spared.” Backing Sharma, who

was recently rebuked by the Supreme Court over her remarks on the Prophet that triggered protests, Kumar said she should be considered “innocent” unless the top court rules otherwise. “Our country will only run as per the Constitution. I’ve heard statements of Nupur Sharma and she only gave two examples of Prophet Mohammad’s life. Until the Supreme Court says that Nupur Sharma is guilty, everyone should consider her innocent. Two judges of the Supreme Court made an observation and it cannot be considered as a judgement,” Kumar said.

LUCKNOW, JUL 9 ( AGENCIES): The brutal killing of Kanhaiya Lal in Udaipur and a pharmacist in Amravati for backing suspended BJP spokesperson Nupur Sharma led the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) on Friday to announce helpline number belonging to Bajrang Dal workers for 20 regions across the country, including five from UP, to protect the Hindu community from, what it called, “jihadi elements,” reports The New Indian Express. There has been a country wide outrage over the controversial statement of suspended BJP spokesperson Nupur Sharma over Prophet Mohammad. The five regions of UP for which a helpline numbers were issued included Meerut (8218329105), Kanpur (9936855898), Kashi (9198942004), Goraksh (9511178248) and Awadh (9473795999). Among other states for which the helpline numbers were issued are Gujarat, Rajasthan, Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, J&K, Delhi, Karnataka, Bihar, Odisha and Madhya Pradesh. As per the highly-placed VHP sources, the Bajrang Dal workers would extend help to the Hindu community in case of any trouble without flouting democratic guidelines and the law of the land. A senior VHP functionary claimed that Bajrang Dal cadre were cautioned against brandishing any weapon in public so as to avoid any conflagration. The VHP sources claimed that the Bajrang Dal workers would contact the district authorities concerned to stem any possible communal flare-up. The VHP sources said that the strength of Bajrang Dal workers would vary from region to region. The VHP had switched over to an aggressive stance after Kanhaiya Lal’s murder in Udaipur exhorting its youth wing, Bajrang Dal cadre to hold countrywide protests against the incident.

LAKHIMPUR KHERI (UP), JUL 9 (PTI): A court in Uttar Pradesh’s Lakhimpur Kheri has summoned Alt News co-founder Mohammad Zubair on July 11 in a case registered in November last year on the charge of promoting enmity, a senior official said Saturday. Shortly after Zubair got an interim bail from Supreme Court on Friday in a case registered in Sitapur for hurting religious sentiments, Lakhimpur Kheri Police served him a warrant to appear in court. The Supreme Court on Friday granted five-day interim bail to Zubair in connection with an FIR lodged against him in Sitapur district but he will

remain in custody as per the order of a Delhi court in another case. “The court of additional chief judicial magistrate (ACJM) Mohammadi in Kheri district issued the warrant against Mohd Zubair, which was served by Kheri police on Friday,” Additional superintendent of police (ASP) Arun Kumar Singh told PTI on Saturday. Mohammadi Police station in charge Ambar Singh told PTI that “a case against Mohd Zubair had been lodged by Ashish Katiyar, reporter for a private news channel on Nov 25, 2021 by an order by a Kheri court.” “In his complaint, Katiyar had alleged Zubair of misleading people through his tweet about his channel,” he said. Subsequently, two new entities -- AIIPL and IAIT -- were formed in 2013-14 and 2012-13 respectively to escape the FCRA route and these entities received foreign exchange “in the guise of ” service export and FDI, the federal agency said. It said as the FCRA licence of AIIFT was “revoked” by the Centre, a “new method” was adopted by Amnesty entities to receive money from abroad as Amnesty International, UK sent Rs 51.72 crore to AIIPL

Abe’s death raises security questions Wallace rules out bid to replace Johnson

Spencer and Liam Fox. But a No 10 source told the BBC there was "real disappointment" with Mr Sunak in Downing Street. They accused him of having a "short memory", adding: "It was the prime minister who trusted him and gave him a top job when he was a junior minister. "The prime minister backed him to the hilt. It's a shame it wasn't reciprocated." Mr Sunak responded to a number of supportive posts on social media from Tory MPs, tweeting: "Thank you. I've been truly overwhelmed by the support and so grateful for the thousands of people who have signed up to join the campaign. " To ge t h e r we w i l l restore trust, rebuild the economy and reunite the country." Mr Johnson has said he intends to stay on in Downing Street until a successor is chosen.

residential area of Shibuya. Many mourners, including top party officials, waited for his remains and lowered their heads as the vehicle passed. Nara prefectural police chief Tomoaki Onizuka said Abe’s assassination was his “greatest regret” in a 27-year career. “I cannot deny there were problems

with our security,” Onizuka said. “Whether it was a setup, emergency response, or ability of individuals, we still have to find out. Overall, there was a problem and we will review it from every perspective.” Abe’s assassination ahead of Sunday’s parliamentary election shocked the nation and raised questions over whether security for the former prime minister was adequate. Some observers who watched videos of the attack noted a lack of attention in the open space behind Abe as he spoke. A former Kyoto prefectural police investigator, Fumikazu Higuchi, said the footage suggested security was sparse at the event and insufficient for a former prime minister. “It is necessary to investigate why security allowed Yamagami to freely

move and go behind Mr. Abe,” Higuchi told a Nippon TV talk show. Experts also said Abe was more vulnerable standing on the ground level, instead of atop a campaign vehicle, which is usually the case but was reportedly unavailable due to his hastily arranged visit to Nara. “Looks like police were mainly focusing on frontward, while paying little attention to what’s behind Mr. Abe, and nobody stopped the suspect approaching him,” said Mitsuru Fukuda, a crisis management professor at Nihon University. “Clearly there were problems.” Fukuda said that election campaigns provide a chance for voters and politicians to interact because “political terrorism” was extremely rare in postwar Japan.

is online and ready to search for new particles. “Dark matter remains one of the biggest mysteries of particle physics today,” Hugh Lippincott, a spokesperson for the LZ team of 250 scientists, said in the livestreamed announcement. After eight years of preparation, the LZ detector worked as expected during a 63-day test run,

according to the researchers, who published a report on that first set of data on Thursday. Now they’re preparing to run the experiment for up to 1,000 days, starting in late summer or early fall. They could have early results sometime in 2023, but the observation could continue for up to five years. This isn’t the first vat

of liquid xenon to search for dark matter, but it’s the largest and most sensitive. Its new data has ruled out a range of masses for darkmatter particles, and it has enough sensitivity to search in even lower mass ranges. If they do uncover a new particle, it could lead to a new, more precise physics beyond the Standard Model that has defined our understanding of the universe since the 1970s. The detection of dark matter would revolutionize our most fundamental understanding of the universe. “Everyone’s trying to find some some evidence for physics beyond the standard model. And probably the strongest evidence we have of that is dark matter,” Aaron Manalaysay, the project’s physics coordinator, told Insider, adding, “But we just really don’t know what it is.” (Business Insider)

he fourth film of the superhero series ‘Captain America’ is set to roll the camera under the wings of director Julius Onah, who is known for his work on ‘The Cloverfield Paradox’ and ‘Luce’. The movie, which will star Anthony Mackie, will build on the events from the 2021 OTT series, ‘The Falcon and the Winter Soldier’, reports ‘Variety’. That show’s creator and head writer, Malcolm Spellman, is writing the screenplay with Dalan Musson, a staff writer on the series. As per ‘Variety’, on the show, Mackie’s Sam Wilson struggles to accept the mantle of Captain America that Steve Rogers (Chris Evans) gave him at the end of 2019’s ‘Avengers: Endgame’ ultimately learning to accept the title and the cultural

weight that comes with it. ‘Variety’ further states that the film does not yet have an official title or release date, but expectations are high that Marvel Studios could announce both later this month at San Diego Comic-Con, where the studio will be presenting for the first time since 2019 after SDCC was cancelled in 2020 and 2021 due to the pandemic. It’s also unclear who else from ‘Falcon and the Winter Soldier’, including Sebastian Stan’s Bucky Barnes (aka the Winter Soldier), Wyatt Russell’s John Walker (aka US Agent), Emily VanCamp’s Sharon Carter (aka Power Broker) or Julia Louis-Dreyfus’ Valentina Allegra de Fontaine, would be joining Mackie in the film. picy food challenges are all the rage these days, but can munching red hot peppers and sizzling hot sauces harm you? One nutrition expert from University Hospitals Cleveland Medical Center in Ohio suggests that while it may burn your tongue at the dinner table and trigger some gastrointestinal distress as it travels through your body, it could actually help improve your lifelong health. Capsaicin, the ingredient found in peppers that causes that characteristic heat, is an oil-like chemical compound that binds to pain receptors on the tongue and throughout the digestive tract. It’s the capsaicin that causes your brains to feel like you’re on fire when you bite into a jalapeno pepper. “But capsaicin does not actually burn you,” explained Jayna Metalonis, a dietician at University Hospitals. “Instead, it tricks your brain into thinking a temperature change has occurred, resulting in the sensation of heat and pain.” It’s just your body’s

once a week. The benefits included lower cholesterol, a decreased chance of heart disease, better stomach and gut health, and even weight loss. But while these studies found an association, they did not prove a cause-andeffect relationship. Capsaicin is also the key ingredient in a number of pain relief medications used to treat ailments from arthritis to fibromyalgia to headaches. “The good news is that for most healthy people — even those participating in ‘extreme’ challenges involving consumption of record-setting hot peppers — eating very spicy foods does not pose any serious or lasting dangers to your health and does not usually require medical treatment,” Metalonis said in a hospital news release. But she noted that there are exceptions. The “one chip challenge,” a viral social media challenge on TikTok involving eating one extremely hot chip loaded with Carolina Reaper spice, has on some occasions put people into the ER with “thunderclap headache,” and spontaneous ruptures in the throat are rare, but have happened. So, while chili peppers may make your dinner a bit more exciting, it’s still best not to consume too much of a good thing, Metalonis said. By Ellie Quinlan Houghtaling HealthDay Reporter.

However, he resumed the residency the following month and in late March

launched another North American tour that has continued ever since. The tour with Earth, Wind & Fire is scheduled to continue through the end of August. Just two weeks later, the musician is slated to resume his longstanding residency at the House of Blues in Las Vegas through the end of September before resuming for two more weeks in November. “Carlos is doing well and is anxious to be back on stage soon. He just needs rest,” Vrionis continued. “Santana profoundly regrets that these postponements of his upcoming performances; but, his health is our number one concern. He is looking forward to seeing all of his fans very soon.” Live Nation will be announcing the rescheduled show dates. All previously purchased tickets will be honored for the new dates. (Variety)

eep inside an old gold mine, in a vat of liquid xenon, a new hunt has begun for dark matter — the mysterious stuff that makes up about 85% of all matter in the universe. Nobody knows what exactly dark matter is. Scientists know it exists because they can measure the way its gravity affects faraway galaxies, but they’ve never detected it directly. That’s the goal of a new experiment buried deep beneath Lead, South Dakota: to catch dark matter in the act of interacting with other particles. The experiment is called LUX-ZEPLIN, or LZ for short. It’s a 10-ton vat of pure liquid xenon, rigged with detectors to catch the incredibly faint flash of energy that would come from a particle of dark matter colliding with a xenon atom. World Games: Verma stuns Schloesser

Abhishek Verma

NEW DELHI, JUL 9 (AGENCIES): Star Indian compound archer Abhishek Verma shocked world champion Mike Schloesser to storm into the semi-final of the World Games here. The two were locked 149-149 after a five-setter

duel and the tie-breaker also was a stalemate with both shooting perfect 10s, but the Indian edged out the world number one shooting closer to centre to make the last-four on Friday. India also remained in the fray in the mixed compound section where

Verstappen wins Austrian GP to extend title lead

LO N D O N, J U L 9 (AGENCIES): Red Bull’s Max Verstappen took a controlled victory in the sprint race at the Austrian Grand Prix to edge further ahead in the championship. The Dutchman beat Ferrari duo Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz, extending his lead over Leclerc to 44 points, BBC reported. Leclerc fought off an early challenge from Sainz but was safe in second once far enough ahead of his team-mate to lose the DRS overtaking aid. Mercedes’ George Russell took fourth and Lewis Hamilton eighth. Hamilton’s race was hampered by a tangle at the start that saw Alpha Tauri’s Pierre Gasly pitched into a spin, and then getting stuck behind the two Haas cars, before eventually overhauling Mick Schumacher for the final point. The sprint result made little difference to the starting order for Sunday’s main event, other than to enable Red Bull’s Sergio Perez to recover ground from his 13th place to finish fifth, where the Mexican will now start the grand prix. Perez benefited from the Red Bull’s strong straight-line speed to make impressive progress, whereas Hamilton was hampered by the Mercedes’ struggles in that area.

NEW DELHI, JUL 9 (AGENCIES): In a decision that could make life easier for athletes and former sportspersons, they can now apply for their dues and awards online without having to involve national federations or visit government offices for physical or file verification. Active athletes who seek awards, rewards or any other form of government recognition can log on to the sports ministry portal and upload relevant documents needed for payment, Indian Express reported. “If an athlete had to seek for rewards and recognition from the government after a good performance, they had to go via the federation or SAI earlier, then it went through scrutiny and it took almost a year or two for these athletes to get their dues,” sports minister Anurag Thakur said during the launch of the new-look website on Friday. “We made this system simpler and more transparent. We have used technology to bring in more transparency and accountability to the system and it is further

going to help the athletes to apply online and they will get their dues in a limited time.” Former sportspersons can now also apply for pension online. “Pension scheme or Deen Dayal Upadhyay National Welfare Scheme for Sportspersons also we have made online so that athletes’ time doesn’t get wasted on this. The role of SAI and NSFs have been made non-existent so to say,” the minister said. “Pension for meritorious sportspersons scheme also used to take time and many failed to get the benefit. So, we have made available to sportspersons an easy-to- use transparent system. It is user-friendly and technology-driven. We will try to upgrade this system continuously so that life becomes easy and one can get the benefits. Among the four Indian archers in the men’s individual events, Abhishek Verma was the only one who made the semi-finals. I don’t have any idea what Bazball is’: McCullum

PERTH, JUL 9 (IANS): The phrase ‘Baz-ball’ has been echoing in world cricket for the past few weeks thanks to the attacking style of play that England have adopted under Brendon McCullum’s tutelage. England have been in fine form this summer, winning all four Test matches they have played. Coach McCullum, nicknamed ‘Baz’, and captain Ben Stokes have made a formidable partnership in the longest format of the game and under them, the Three Lions have played an attacking brand of cricket, which the English press has labelled as ‘Baz-ball’. However, the former New Zealand captain has no idea what “Baz-ball is”. “I don’t have any idea what ‘Baz-ball’ is. It’s not just all crash and burn, if you look at the approach, and that’s why I don’t really like that silly term that people are throwing out there. “Because there’s actually quite a bit of thought that goes into how the guys manufacture their performances and when they put pressure on bowlers and which bowlers they put pressure on. There’s also times where they’ve absorbed pressure beautifully as well,” McCullum told SEN radio.

Saha picks Tripura for 2022-23 domestic season

AG A RTA L A , J U L 9 (IANS): India wicketkeeper-batter Wriddhiman Saha has signed as player-cummentor of the Tripura team for the 2022-23 domestic season, ending a first-class stint of almost 15 years with Bengal. The 37-year-old Saha, who on Friday officially signed the contract in the state’s capital, is likely to be named the captain of the side. The veteran was in talks with Tripura for over a month. However, things were formalised once he was handed a no-objection certificate by the Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) late last month. Notably, Saha had asked for his NOC after being hurt by comments by a senior administrator before the 2021-22 Ranji Trophy quarterfinals. According to a report in ESPNcricinfo, the Tripura Cricket Association was keen to have Saha’s since it’s more than likely he will be available for the entire duration of the domestic season.

CHENNAI, JUL 9 (IANS): Reigning Asian champion Vishwanath Suresh and Rohit Chamoli extended their impressive run to storm into the men’s quarterfinals by registering emphatic wins at the 5th Youth Men’s and Women’s National Boxing Championships here on Saturday. While Vishwanath, representing the Services Sports Control Board (SSCB), thrashed Chandigarh’s Sushant Kapoor by 5-0 in the 48kg category, 2021 Asian junior champion Rohit of Chandigarh outpunched Bhupendra Kumar of Uttar Pradesh by a similar margin in the 51kg pre-quarterfinals contest. 2nd Test: Karunaratne, Mendis lead SL’s fight back GALLE, JUL 9 (AFP): Skipper Dimuth Karunaratne and Kusal Mendis hit gritty half-centuries on Saturday to lead a strong Sri Lankan reply on day two of the second Test against Australia. The host reached 184 for two at stumps in Galle, where only a few spectators watched from the stands after a fresh outbreak of political unrest in the country. Karunaratne made 86 in a marathon stand of 152 with Kusal before Mitchell Swepson broke through with the captain’s wicket. Kusal was still batting on 84 alongside Angelo Mathews, on six, at close of play, with Sri Lanka trailing Australia’s first innings’ 364 by 180 runs. Debutant Sri Lankan spinner Prabhat Jayasuriya claimed six wickets to bowl out Australia in the first session, with Steve Smith left unbeaten on 145. The host was dealt an early blow when Mitchell Starc’s pace bowling got Pathum Nissanka to edge the ball to gully, where Cameron Green took a good catch. The left handright hand batting pair of Karunaratne and Kusal survived an inspired spell of pace bowling from Starc and skipper Pat Cummins to grind their way through the afternoon. Karunaratne raised his fifty with a boundary off Swepson, while Kusal’s stubborn resistance

prompted Australia to rotate its bowlers. Premier off-spinner Nathan Lyon, who starred in the team’s opening win with nine wickets, had 21 overs without success. Swepson eventually trapped Karunaratne lbw on a delivery that skidded straight into the batsman’s pads. The tourist started the day on 298-5 with Smith, who scored his first Test hundred in 18 months on day one, resuming on 109. Jayasuriya, who took three wickets on the opening day, set a

trap for overnight batsman Alex Carey, who miscued a reverse sweep to be caught at backward point for 28. The left-arm spinner soon got Starc out for one to become the seventh Sri Lankan bowler to take five wickets in an innings on Test debut. Jayasuriya was one of the three Sri Lankan players, along with Maheesh Theekshana and Kamindu Mendis, to be awarded a first Test cap following a Covid outbreak sidelining several members of the squad. There were barely any spectators at

Galle for the second day’s play, with the host country embroiled in public unrest arising from its painful economic crisis. The morning session saw hundreds of protesters looking down on the Galle fort to demand the resignation of Sri Lanka’s President -- who fled his home on Saturday shortly before a huge crowd of protesters stormed his residence. Australia lead the twomatch series 1-0 after a crushing opening win inside three days during last week’s first Test.

LONDON, JUL 9 (IANS): Australian tennis player Nick Kyrgios is appalled with not seeing any support for him from his country’s former players in his run to the Wimbledon final against 20-time Grand Slam singles champion Novak Djokovic. The mercurial 27-year-old Kyrgios made it to his maiden Grand Slam final after his semifinal opponent, Spanish stalwart Rafael Nadal withdrew from the grasscourt major due to an abdominal injury. The world No. 40, whose best showing in a major before his Wimbledon success was reaching the 2015 Australian Open quarterfinal, also indicated he is being made to feel like an outcast. “As for the greats of Australian tennis, they haven’t always been the nicest to me personally,” Kyrgios was quoted as saying by The Sydney Morning Herald, a day before his title clash against the Serbian ace. “They haven’t always been supportive. They haven’t been supportive these two weeks. So it’s hard for me to kind of read things that they say about me. India thrash Eng by 49 runs in 2nd T20

BIRMINGHAM, JUL 9 (PTI): Rohit Sharma’s inspirational leadership and an aggressive brand new approach saw India completely outclass England by 49 runs in the second T20 International to seal the three-match series with an unassailable 2-0 lead here on Saturday. Batting first, India once again showed a start-to-finish aggressive intent while reaching 170 for eight riding on new ‘batting all-rounder’ Ravindra Jadeja (46 not out off 29 balls) after a sudden collapse during the middlephase on a track full of pace and bounce. With the ball, Bhuvneshwar Kumar’s (3/15) new found rhythm in the powerplay overs was superbly complemented by the skilful duo of Jasprit Bumrah (2/10) and Yuzevndra Chahal (2/10) as England innings imploded for a meagre 121 in 17 overs. If India’s batting has been very good in both the games, the bowling has simply been outstanding with complete domination in the powerplays. Since he got full-time captaincy, the Indian team is yet to lose a match under him. There has been three clean sweeps -- New Zealand (30), West Indies (3-0), Sri

Lanka (3-0) and a fourth against England in the current one looks imminent. With three months left for the World T20, the playing XI on Saturday gave a glimpse of what could be the batting order and its philosophy going forward. Rishabh Pant’s (26 off 15 balls) elevation as an opener alongside skipper Rohit (31 off 20 balls) is a welcome move where the team at least wouldn’t be erring in the side of caution in the powerplay overs. In between the duo, they hit seven fours and three sixes

in the first six overs, an approach that was missing during last T20 World Cup. The strategy is to not stop playing the shots even if wickets fall at one end and Virat Kohli (1 off 3 balls) did feel the peer pressure and the mis-timed skier showed his desperation. But the most impressive aspect came to fore from 89 for five, as India still managed to reach 170, courtesy Jadeja, who didn’t have a great time in T20 cricket having had a torrid time in CSK during IPL, where he lost form and fractured relationships.

Rybakina beats Jabeur to win Wimbledon women’s singles title LO N D O N, J U L 9 (AGENCIES): Elena Rybakina became the first player from Kazakhstan to win a Grand Slam title by beating Tunisian third seed Ons Jabeur in a gripping Wimbledon final. Rybakina, 23, fought back to win 3-6 6-2 6-2 and become the youngest Wimbledon singles champion since 2011. After a shaky first set, she improved and pressured Jabeur into errors. Rybakina was born in Moscow and her victory comes in a year where Wimbledon banned Russians from playing. The All England Club did not allow Russian and Belarusian players to compete at this year’s tournament in response to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Rybakina, who changed allegiance in 2018 after receiving greater financial support from Kazakhstan, was presented with the Venus Rosewater Dish by the Duchess of Cambridge, who has publicly supported Ukraine’s fight. festooned with the logo of Tokyo’s bid committee. Abe and Japan famously campaigned for those Games under the motto “a safe pair of hands.” This was at a time when Sochi, Russia, and Rio de Janeiro were the focal point of relentless criticism for their preparations; Sochi for the 2014 Winter Olympics and Rio for the 2016 Summer Games. Ironically, corr up-

tion charges would eventual haunt Tokyo’s preparations. And it was Abe who, in a closing speech to the Inter national Olympic Committee before the vote in Buenos Aires, reassured members that the Fukushima nuclear disaster — which happened in 2011 — was “under control.” However, it wasn’t so. That area of northeastern Japan is still battling to recover even a decade after the tragedy. Many in the region feel the Olympics detracted from the recovery, rather than helped speed it. Tokyo defeated Istanbul 60-36 in the final round of secret voting in 2013. Madrid was eliminated after an initial tie with Istanbul in the first round of voting. And it was Abe and IOC President Thomas Bach who had the final word in March 2020 in postponing the Games in the face of surging COVID-19 deaths. After sharing a warm hug with Jabeur at the net, Rybakina received a respectful round of applause before then running up a gangway of the stairs to hug her team. “Words can’t say how happy I am,” she said. Rybakina had quietly moved through the Wimbledon draw this fortnight, using her height and power to great effect. Eventually that also proved to be the case in a match against a player of contrasting style and personality. Going into the final,

Rybakina had dropped only one set during the Wimbledon fortnight when she fought back to beat Australia’s Ajla Tomljanovic in the quarter-finals. But Jabeur, full of slice and variety, settled the quickest to break Rybakina’s serve twice and race away with the opening set. Rybakina showed no nerves in a powerful semifinal display against 2019 champion Simona Halep, but handling those in all pomp and prestige of a first Grand Slam final was a different proposition. Eventually she settled down and the contest suddenly took a change of direction at the start of the second set.

on — only because of Abe. “Only his vision, determination and dependability allowed us to take the unprecedented decision to postpone the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020,” Bach said. He said that without Abe “these Olympic Games would never have happened.” He called Abe “a man with a vision, full of determination and boundless energy to make his vision come true. What I appreciated most about him was that he was a man of his word.” Bach said the Olympic flag at the IOC headquarters in Lausanne, Switzerland, would fly at half-staff for three days. Abe was probably the No. 1 booster of Tokyo’s 2020 Games, which he hoped would be a reminder that Japan was still a power in Asia despite the rise of China. But he stepped down from office, claiming poor health, late in August 2020 — just under 11 months before the delayed Games would actu-

ally open. “I thought for him, not being able to be Prime Minister at the time of the Olympics, was somewhat heartbreaking,” David Leheny, a political scientist at Japan’s Waseda University, said in an interview with The Associated Press. “He had put so much work into it, and I think for him it was emblematic of Japan reemerging as a leader on the global stage.” Abe was replaced by Yoshihide Suga, who oversaw the Olympics but left office just weeks after they ended. Suga was criticised for his handling of the pandemic. “Given how important the 1964 Tokyo Olympics were to many people — in announcing Japan’s emergence after World War II — I think for Abe having the Olympics in Tokyo in 2020 was meant to be the same thing,” Leheny added. “And he certainly wasn’t shy about making himself central to the process.”

possible,” Manasi said. “Sports for women is not easy because you don’t get women coaches, you don’t get women physios. You don’t get those places where you can share things

with your mentors. I wish we have more presence of females in sports,” she added. L o n g j u m p Wo r l d Championship medallist Anju Bobby George had recently spoken at the Sportstar South Sports conclave about the hurdles athletes face in reporting incidents of sexual misconduct. As a global role model for sportspersons with disabilities, Manasi said, “People who are dealing with their unfortunate incidents, I’d like to tell them that it is not easy to come out of it. First, give yourself enough time... it’s not that difficult either. You can sail through. You will sail through. Just do what you love to do. You will have to prove yourself 10 times more than anybody else, but still keep at it. Enjoy once you are in the buzz, but do not forget about your fundamentals. Do what you love just for the happiness of doing it and not for anything else.” Manasi recently withdrew from a tournament in Ireland because of personal reasons, but she plans to play again in Thailand in August and in the World Championship in November.

If Ashwin can be dropped, then Kohli can also be dropped: Kapil

NEW DELHI, JUL 9 (IANS): Since November 2019, Virat Kohli hasn’t scored a century in international cricket and has been in a lean patch across all formats. Now, legendary all-rounder and 1983 World Cup winning captain Kapil Dev feels that when ace offspinner Ravichandran Ashwin can be dropped, then Kohli could be dropped as well from the Indian team. With players like Deepak Hooda, Suryakumar Yadav, Rishabh Pant and Shreyas Iyer in the mix, it is getting tougher for Kohli to own a place in the playing eleven, especially with the Men’s T20 World Cup happening in Australia in October-November. “Now the situation is such that you might be forced to bench Kohli from the T20 playing XI. He will have to perform better. If world No. 2 bowler Ashwin can be dropped from Test side, then (the) world No. 1 batter can also be dropped. “Virat Kohli has still a lot of ability and talent. You hope such a player comes

back (into form). It’s not as if you completely leave him out. If he isn’t performing now, it’s fine (to leave him out). Youngsters are playing well. But the day Virat scores runs, can you keep him out? If you can keep Ashwin out, you can keep anyone out,” said Kapil to ABP News. Talking further about Kohli’s poor form and the rising competition from young cricketers, Kapil remarked, “At the moment, Virat is not batting at a level which we have seen him do over the years. He has made a legendary name for himself because of his performances. But if he isn’t performing, you can’t continue to keep these boys (young players) out.
