The colonial-era state mansion is one of Sri Lanka’s key symbols of state power and officials said Rajapaksa’s departure raised questions as to whether he intended to remain in office. “We are awaiting instructions,” a top civil servant told AFP. “We still don’t know where he is, but we know he is with the Sri

Lanka navy and is safe.” Private broadcasters showed what appeared to be a vehicle convoy belonging to the president at Sri Lanka’s main international airport, but there was no confirmation on whether he had left the island. Soon after the crowd stormed the presidential palace, Rajapaksa’s nearby office also fell into the hands of protesters. Security forces attempted to disperse the huge crowds that had mobbed Colombo’s administrative district. Three people were hospitalised after being shot along with 36 others who suffered breathing difficulties following intense tear gas barrages, a spokeswoman for the main hospital in Colombo said. BA.2.75 not severe, won’t bring fourth wave: INSACOG co-chair

NEW DELHI, JUL 9 (AGENCIES): Omicron s u b - va r i a n t , BA . 2 . 7 5 , which is driving the latest Covid-19 surge in India, is not severe or brought serious diseases and risk of death despite being more transmissible than BA.2 responsible for the second Covid wave in India. Speaking to The New Indian Express, Dr N K Arora, co-chair of the Indian SARS-CoV-2 Genomics Consortium (INSACOG), said the cases are not being reported from any cluster or any one particular area, despite the transmission (Cont’d on p-8) and efficiency of the virus

being 20-30 per cent more as compared to BA.2. “The new sub-variant has not led to any major increase or expansion of the case pool or risk of severe disease. These cases are all spread out. I would be worried if they were occurring in one or two districts. It is happening in a scattered manner. This means it is not something which is either spreading too fast or causing too many severe cases,” said Arora, head of the Covid-19 Working Group of the National Technical Advisory Group on Immunisation (NTAGI).

TOKYO, JUL 9 (AP): The body of Japan’s former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe was returned to Tokyo on Saturday after he was fatally shot during a campaign speech in western Japan a day earlier. Abe was attacked in the city of Nara and airlifted to a local hospital but died of blood loss despite emergency treatment including massive blood transfusions. Police arrested the attacker, a former member of Japan’s navy, at the scene on suspicion of murder. Police confiscated the homemade gun he used, and several others were later found at his apartment.

The attacker told investigators he plotted the shooting because he believed rumours that Abe was connected to an organisation that he resents, according to police. Japanese media reported that the man had

developed hatred toward a religious group his mother was devoted to. The reports did not specify the group. A black hearse carrying Abe’s body and accompanied by his wife, Akie, arrived at his home in Tokyo’s upscale residential

NOA vice president decries lack of transparency DIMAPUR, JUL 9 (NPN): In a shocking disclosure that exposed how the Nagaland Olympic Association (NOA) is being managed, its vice president and former DGP , K. Kire, Saturday expressed unhappiness over the lack of transparency where all the activities and decisions of the highest body of sports were being taken by “one or a few individuals” while keeping other members in the dark. In a press release, the K.Kire IPS(Retd) and NOA vice president, who is a renowned sportsperson having represented Naga-

land at the national level in football and badminton, said the association was in existence for many years but it was only through the efforts of present chief minister Neiphiu Rio as the president, that it was affiliated with Indian Olympic Association (IOA). As NOA, he said the first Olympic games was held at Chümoukedima in 2018 where all districts participated. Towards this, he said NOA advanced a lot of money to associations for participating in the event. While most of the associations submitted their

accounts after the event, he said it was disheartening that till December 11, 2020, when the new office bearers were elected, some individuals failed to submit their expenditure statements despite several reminders. He said the individuals took around Rs.70 to Rs 80 lakhs for the meet but had not submitted their accounts although it was not known if they have submitted to the new NOA treasurer. Kire said he, as then treasurer, had requested several times for an audit to be carried out, but there

was no response from the association. He also said the at one time, members were informed that association office would be housed in a minister’s building and that other rooms would be added for other associations. However, he expressed surprise when “suddenly a new NOA building had come up” and wondered how many NOA members knew about it. Citing another instance where decisions were taken without consultation of the entire NOA body, Kire said even the decision to establish the

Nagaland Police Sports Battalion(NPSB) was never discussed though he has no objection to the NPSB being established. In the light of the above, Kire said if the NOA was to function as an individual property, he would disassociate himself from it. Though not saying he was resigning, the NOA vice president said “…I like to work and associate myself where there is transparency for all and everyone is taken on board to ensure that a collective decision was taken unlike the present system.” (See p-6)

area of Shibuya, where many mourners waited and lowered their heads as the vehicle passed. Abe’s assassination ahead of Sunday’s parliamentary election shocked the nation and raised questions over whether security for the former prime minister was adequate. Police on Saturday said autopsy results showed that a bullet that entered Abe’s upper left arm damaged arteries beneath both collar bones, causing fatal massive bleeding. Some observers who watched videos of the assassination on social media and television noted a lack of attention in the open

space behind Abe as he spoke. A former Kyoto prefectural police investigator, Fumikazu Higuchi, said the footage suggested security was sparse at the event and insufficient for a former prime minister. “It is necessary to investigate why security allowed Yamagami to freely move and go behind Mr. Abe,” Higuchi told a Nippon TV talk show. Experts also said Abe was more vulnerable standing on the ground level, instead of atop a campaign vehicle, which reportedly could not be arranged because his visit to Nara was hastily planned the day before.

Japanese Encephalitis claims 8 lives in Assam G U WA H AT I , J U L 9 (IANS): At least eight people died of Japanese Encephalitis (JE) in Assam in the past nine days while 82 were infected, prompting the Health Department to seek authorities to set up District Rapid Response Teams (DRRT) to keep a close watch on the situation. JE and malaria kill many people in Assam every year, specifically during the monsoon season that usually starts in May and stretches to October. According to the National Health Mission (NHM), since July 1, at least eight people have died

and 82 people have fallen ill after being infected by the vector-borne diseases. Principal Secretary, Health, Avinash Joshi and NHM Director Dr. M S Lakshmi Priya on Saturday conducted a meeting, through video conferencing, with the district authorities and asked them to constitute DRRTs by July 16 to deal with the situation. The NHM has also issued a standard operating procedure and guidelines to tackle the situation arising with the outbreak of the JE. Last year, at least 40 deaths were reported due to JE, officials said. K Y M C
