(NPN): Responding to various speculations being raised in public domain by individuals, organisations and political parties over its alliance with the BJP, the NDPP has claimed that its partnership with BJP was one of trust and based on political maturity. NDPP in a statement clarified that it had partnered together with BJP for the greater good of Naga people, while appreciating the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union home minister

The statement mentioned that the NDPP-BJP alliance under the banner of the UDA government had unanimously resolved to work for early solution and reiterated the commitment to pave the way in the event of an honourable, acceptable and inclusive solution to the Indo-Naga political issue. The party extended support to the call for early solution of the vexed IndoNaga political imbroglio and

its role as facilitator would pursue early realisation of a solution to the extent that it had firmly supported the call for solution even before the elections. Rejecting the allegation of diluting its regional spirit due to alliance with BJP, NDPP pointed out that regional parties in many States across the country had continued to have alliances with national parties, including Meghalaya, Sikkim and Mizoram. KSCDL initiates data collection as part of UOF

DIMAPUR: Kohima Smart City Development Ltd (KSCDL) has initiated the process of collecting data pertaining to Kohima city from various departments/ agencies/organisations as a part of the Urban Outcomes Framework (UOF) 2022. With the submission dateline for UOF fixed at September 15, 2022, KSCDL appealed for cooperation and active participation from stakeholder departments and public to put Kohima in a fair ranking. In order to measure the performance of cities across India, Smart City Mission has undertaken initiatives such as Ease of Living Index (EoLI), Municipal Performance Index (MPI), Climate Smart Cities Assessment Framework (CSCAF) and Data Maturity Assessment Framework (DMAF). In the past, data for these frameworks were collected at different times and cycles, thus having issues like overlapping, duplicity and more time and effort being expended in the exercise. Through UOF 2022, data across 14 sectors covering 442 data points would be streamlined so that there was increased focus on data collection and disaggregated data could be analysed and used for ranking by domain experts. The various initiatives/ frameworks covered by UOF 2022 includes EoLI, which was quantified across quality of life, economic ability and sustainability. Another element was Citizen Perception Survey; MPI aims to study accomplishment of municipalities across service while CSCAF was launched with an objective to provide roadmap for Indian cities in combating climate change. Kohima was ranked among top 10 smart cities in DMAF 2.0. For more information regarding the urban Outcomes Framework 2022, one may visit https://smartnet.niua.org/uof-2022/. K Y M C

would be resumed. They mentioned that ANATG - 2015 batch comprised graduate teachers, primary teachers, drawing teachers and other vocational teachers who were appointed on ad hoc basis against sanctioned posts from 1994 to 2012. And as per the department’s norms for service regularisation, the departmental suitability test, verification of documents and interviews were conducted by the department on May 20 and 22, 2017. However, the duo alleged that even after the fulfilment of all criteria, the matter of regularisation was not considered, which compelled them to undertake pen down strike district-wise from May 16 to 18, 2018 followed by mass casual leave from June 4 to 6, 2018, sit-in protest at Directorate of School Education from June 18 to 29, 2018 and finally hunger strike from June 29, 2018, which was unconditionally suspended.

Kevithuto Sophie and others along with recipients of the award on Tuesday. (NP)

Correspondent KOHIMA, AUG 9 (NPN): Kohima police on Tuesday inaugurated a road safety cell under District Executive Force (DEF) Kohima and also handed over “Good Samaritan Award” to Tsiese Basa Youth Organisation (TBYO) and DEF Kohima, Unarmed Branch Constable (UBC) Isilong Hau. Speaking at the programme senior SP Kohima, Kevithuto Sophie said many times, people who do noble services went unnoticed and therefore they came up with the Good Samaritan Award to acknowledge such people. He said whenever unfortunate incidents or crimes happened, it was the good people around the vicinity that came forward to help people in need. In such cases those people who get injured are taken to the hospital or extended help by first responders who do not expect anything in return, Kevithuto added. Seeing such things happen over the years, Sophie

said DEF felt the need to institute the award to recognise their selfless help. He disclosed that when a Tuensang bound bus met with an accident, member of Tsiesema Youth Organization extended help to the injured victims and that was why their service was acknowledged. He said in another incident, UBC Isilong Hau also helped out a kid who was injured in a vehicular mishap. He said Hau willingly helped the victim even though he was off duty. Kevithuto informed that as part of their Road Safety Awareness programme, a team of officers would be visiting different wards to carry out awareness programmes. With constr uction works ongoing at many

National Highways, he informed that there have been several fatal accidents. He said in order to minimise such incidents they, reached out to drivers to limit their vehicle speed which, he said, was one of the main reasons coupled with rash driving. The senior SP expressed hope that the award would go a long way in recognising the unsung heroes in the society. Earlier the programme was chaired by deputy SP (Traffic), Manom Wallim, NPS, while invocation was pronounced by Police Union Baptist Church pastor, Vesotsü Rhakho. A brief note was shared by Addl SP (Protocol & Traffic), K Soriso, NPS Addl SP, Kohima, Vitoshe K Sumi, NPS, proposed the vote of thanks.

Chishi blames all 60 MLAs for stalling talks

Staff Reporter

DIMAPUR, AUG 9 (NPN): Former chief minister and senior Congress leader KL Chishi has accused all 60 legislators, irrespective of party affiliation, for the “stalemate and stalling of peace talks between Government of India and Naga national workers”. He said this while interacting with a section of the public and supporters during a tour of Zunheboto town and 32Atoizu Assembly constituency, from where he had won previous elections. It was learnt that the veteran politician is set to contest the 2023 Assembly polls on Congress ticket from Atoizu. On the current scenario in Nagaland, Chishi said “We are in a mess. High time for MLAs to resign to facilitate solution and peace.” Chishi said the stalemate was the creation of the state government and not one or two individuals but all 60 legislators irrespective of party affiliations. He reminded that in a democracy, the people’s pledge was sacred and that if elected members promised

KL Chishi

something then they ought to honour their promises. That was why elected members are referred to as “honourable MLAs and ministers”. However, when they do not keep promises made then “something is amiss,” he added. Responding to a query on the role of facilitator, he mentioned that facilitator was a powerful word. As someone with a law background, he said he had been taught to be careful with every word as each word had its own significance. “So, when some people say we are facilitators, that means you are promising to do anything and sacrifice anything for facilitating

something. In Nagaland, this meansa solution and lasting peace,” he added. In the present situation, Chishi maintained that there had been a huge contradiction as the current legislators, ministers and even chief minister Neiphiu Rio had all taken oath under the Constitution of India. “The conflict starts from here because Naga national workers say this is dispute. So, my question is what will the Rio government facilitate when it had taken oath under the Constitution of India? Our chief minister and MLAs are duty bound to protect and safeguard the interest of Indian nation and have to honour and implement every word of the Constitution of India,” he pointed out. Therefore, he said Nagas must understand that if this government and the elected MLAs wanted to play the role of a genuine facilitator as they had been claiming, they had to step aside. “There is no second option. There is no middle path,” he asserted. The former chief minister declared that rhetoric would not help as Nagas

had seen enough rhetoric. If the MLAs wanted to be true facilitators, he urged them to apply their minds and resign en bloc. Also, in the context of Naga political solution, Chishi said then chief minister SC Jamir should not have misled the Congress party into contesting the 1998 Assembly elections which were boycotted by all parties under the slogan ‘Solution Not Election’. “I was with NDM. Esteemed Naga leader late Hokishe Sema was our leader in the party. He was very categorical and had said if by staying away from elections and not becoming ministers and MLAs, we can bring peace in Nagaland, we owe it to ourselves.” Unfortunately, Chishi said BJP did not appreciate what it itself did in 1998 and also NPF, erstwhile NPC. He mentioned that Rio was repeating the mistake that Jamir made in 1998. “Nagas have to be aware of these situations and take a stand perhaps immediately before things get derailed,” he cautioned.

Partnership with BJP based... (From p-1) ideology of regionalism had been compromised, but rather the foundations of regional identity and respect got strengthened and recognised, it added. The party recalled that seat sharing was initiated and implemented since the Assembly elections of 2018 and the understanding continued till date, adding that the spirit of alliance was strengthened and continued even during the election to Lok Sabha, Assembly by-elections and recent Rajya Sabha election. NDPP clarified that the decision to continue with the alliance on July 26 for future seat sharing was taken by the top leadership of BJP, including Shah, in consultation with BJP national president JP Nadda and Assam chief minister and NEDA convener Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma and in the presence of chief minister Neiphiu Rio, adding that it was the result of earlier meetings held in New Delhi and Guwahati. The party said that the September 6, 2021 meeting in Delhi was attended by Amit Shah, JP Nadda, Sarma, Rio, BJP national general secretary BL Santosh, BJP Nagaland in-charge Nalin Kohli, deputy CM Y. Patton, State BJP president Imna Along and ministers-- G Kaito Aye (NDPP) and S. Pangnyu Phom (BJP). The meeting held in Guwahati on May 9, 2022 was attended by Shah, Sarma, Rio, Patton, UDA chairperson TR Zeliang and Imna Along, it added. NDPP said that the agreement was

the result of meetings and consultations of the leadership of both the parties in a mature and responsible manner and not a sudden development. It said that the joint statement signed by the secretary general of NDPP was not on an individual capacity but on behalf of the party and the statement reflected the decision and stand of the party. NDPP said it was not averse to criticisms as, based on these criticisms, it could surge ahead on its policies and methods on how best to serve the people in whichever way was necessary. However, foggy allegations of the party “merging” with BJP and asking its members to leave the party based on a write-up of a journalist only showed political immaturity and did not warrant a response since, as a matured political party, it was well aware of its future and the roadmap was clear. Therefore, the party said statements of apprehensions by various organisations and political parties should be laid to rest as it was confident that the maturity and wisdom of the people would not be impacted in any manner by mere speculations. The party reaffirmed of continuing to follow the ideals of regionalism and uphold the banner of regional ideology and identity, while following its policy of having a national outlook with proactive action on aligning citizens and the State with international realities at the same time. It assured to continue remaining committed to work tirelessly for the welfare of all citizens of the State.

Union Finance minister Nirmala Sitharman, at the recently concluded Parliament session, informed the Lok Sabha that the total outstanding liabilities of Nagaland stood at a whopping Rs 15,620.8 crore as on March 2022. Further, during an all-party meeting held in July this year, the Finance ministry in its presentation on the financial health of states, disclosed that some states had large outstanding guarantees that could pose a threat if financial embargo was invoked. Citing data, the ministry said average committed expenditure to revenue receipt of all states was 56 per cent. The committed expenditure includes loan repayments, pension, salary and other wages while some states had almost no headroom to do anything new.

Assam-M’laya to hold border talks after Aug 15: Conrad

AIZAWL/ SHILLONG, AUG 9 (PTI): High-level delegations of Mizoram and Assam governments on Tuesday held border talks here and expressed hope to amicably resolve the decades-old boundary dispute between the two North-eastern neighbours. The delegations signed a joint statement that said both the states agreed to promote and maintain peace and prevent any untoward incident along the border. Deputy Commissioners of the border districts of both states will meet at least once in two months, the statement said. A violent clash between the police forces of Assam and Mizoram in July last year claimed the lives of six people, following which the two states formed committees to resolve the border dispute. Both sides on Tuesday also agreed that

economic activities, including cultivation and farming, which have been practised by the people on either side of the border, should be allowed to continue regardless of the administrative control exercised by the states. The Mizoram delegation was headed by Home Minister Lalchamliana while the Assam team was led by Border Protection and Development Minister Atul Bora. Speaking to reporters after the talks, Bora said that the chief ministers of both the states are sincere and taking positive roles in settling the vexed border dispute. Lalchamliana said that it will take time to have a lasting solution to the boundary problem. Both delegations agreed to hold the next round of talks in Assam’s capital Guwahati in October. To a question, the Assam minister said that

formation of a joint inspection team to conduct ground verification of the border areas will be discussed in the next meeting. He said a chief ministerial-level talk can be expected soon. Mizoram’s stand on the border issue will also be discussed in the next round of the talks, Lalchamliana said. Three Mizoram’s districts - Aizawl, Kolasib and Mamit - share a 164.6 km long boundary with Assam’s Hailakandi, Karimganj and Cachar districts. The border dispute between the two states is a long-standing issue, which stemmed from two colonial demarcations in 1875 and 1933. There is no proper ground demarcation between the two neighbouring states after Mizoram was carved out as a Union Territory from Assam in 1972.

KSDC reiterates demand for Kuki state

Correspondent

IMPHAL, AUG 9: Prime Minister Narendra Modi was urged to create Kuki state immediately, in a fresh memorandum submitted by Kuki State Demand Committee (KSDC) on Tuesday. KSDC, in the memorandum, claimed that Kukis’ demand for a separate state was a legitimate and a long overdue demand. It stated that Kukis were independent people before the British colonial state annexed their territory. They had struggled to shake the colonial yoke from the start which culminated into the great Kuki Rising of 1917-19. With great hope for freedom, the Kukis also participated in large numbers in the ranks and files of the Indian National Army (INA) during the Second World War (194344) in Northeastern India, it claimed. “We had supported the Indian freedom movement in whatever

ways we could in the hope of some special political entity after India got independence,” the KSDC claimed. It added that immediately after India got independence, they had demanded a separate “Kuki district” on the line of other tribal districts in the region. But when the concept of “district” changed in the new India, they also switched over to the idea of “state”. The Kuki National Assembly, India (KNA), which was formed in 1946 as the political front of the Kuki people, spearheaded the movement for “immediate establishment of Kuki State” since 1960. It submitted a memorandum to the Prime Minister of India Jawaharlal Nehru for the creation of Kuki state in northeast India by bringing together “all contiguous areas now under the habitation of the Kukis in India.” Unfortunately, the government of India (GoI) had given a deaf ear to the democratic

demand of the nationalist Kukis despite several other representations. However, even after seven years of SoO no political dialogue was initiated by the government despite several rounds of talk and an equal number of promises, the KSDC stated in the memorandum. Kuki people under the aegis of Kuki Inpi formed the Kuki State Demand Committee (KSDC) in 2010 in order to bring home to the notice of GoI and Indian public that Kukis demand for separate statehood is the genuine and legitimate rights and demand of the Kuki people of India, it added. Reiterating that the government must create a separate state for Kukis, the KSDC stated that the Kuki population is scattered across all the states of Northeast India with maximum concentration in the state of Manipur. It said Kukis continue to remain backward even after 60 years of Independence.

Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma on Tuesday said his government will hold talks with Assam to resolve the remaining six areas of dispute at the inter-state border after August 15. Regional committees will be formed by the two states to take the process forward for the second phase of the border talks, he said. The delegation sought the intervention of the chief minister to ensure 18 of 34 villages under Raid Nongtung in disputed block-II be retained in Meghalaya. “That is the reason why we have moved forward in six of the twelve areas in the first phase...” Sangma said.

Nitish habitual betrayer, alleges BJP

PATNA, AUG 9 (PTI): The BJP on Tuesday fumed at yet another volte face by its old ally, Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, accusing him of being a “habitual betrayer” who was pushing Bihar into the abyss of lawlessness and corruption by entering into a fresh alliance with the RJD. In a statement issued after core committee meeting at the state headquarters, the party announced that it will stage massive protests (mahadharnas) against the “betrayal” by the JD (U) leader across all districts on Wednesday which will be followed by agitations at the block level a day later. Reacting furiously to the development, senior leader Sushil Kumar Modi, who had served as Kumar’s deputy for more than a decade and is considered as his most trusted man in the BJP, accused the former boss of telling “blatant lie”. “It is a blatant lie that BJP had made RCP Singh a minister without the consent of Nitish ji. Another lie is that the BJP was trying to split the JD (U). He was looking for an excuse to

break ties. The BJP will return to power with a thumping majority in 2024,” Modi tweeted. Notably, Kumar had cited a “unanimous sentiment” in his JD (U) as the reason behind making the sudden move. His party’s ties with the BJP, though dating back to the 1990s, barring a four years hiatus that began with his first breaking away in 2013, have been chequered. However, in the re-

cent past the two parties squabbled on a whole range of issues though the tipping point, according to JD (U) sources, came with alleged attempts of RCP Singh, a former national president who has for some time come to be seen as “BJP’s man”, to split the party. At a press conference here soon after Kumar met the governor, along with RJD’s Tejashwi Yadav, former Union minister Ravi Shankar Prasad accused the

chief minister of inconsistency in his beliefs. “You talk about communalism but you aligned with us in the 1990s when the Ayodhya movement was at its peak. You fought with us against Lalu Prasad on the issue of his involvement in fodder scam. In 2013, your personal dislike for Narendra Modi made you leave us and join hands with the RJD president”, Prasad said. “You left the RJD in 2017 after Tejashwi Yadav’s

name cropped up in a corruption case. You are now pushing Bihar back into the era of lawlessness and corruption which you claimed credit for bringing the state out of,” alleged the Patna Sahib MP. Speaking at the same press conference, state BJP president Sanjay Jaiswal alleged that Kumar was a “habitual betrayer” (‘aadatan dhokhebaaz’) who will be punished by the people of Bihar for betraying the “mandates of 2019 (Lok Sabha polls) and 2020 (assembly elections)”. Kumar had, upon tendering his resignation before Governor Phagu Chauhan and staking claim to form a new government, spoken obliquely of the BJP’s role in propping up RCP Singh against him though he was blunt in criticising “the policy of social divisiveness”, an obvious reference to Hindutva. The 71-year-old had laughed off queries as to whether his move was aimed at realising prime ministerial ambitions, having in the past been seen as a potential rival to Narendra Modi.

Maharashtra cabinet expansion: no women member in 41-day-old ministry

Maharashtra Governor Bhagat Singh Koshyari, CM Eknath Shinde and Dy CM Devendra Fadnavis with newly sworn-in ministers, at a ceremony at Raj Bhavan in Mumbai. (PTI)

MUMBAI, AUG 9 (PTI): Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde on Tuesday expanded his two-member ministry 41 days after taking oath as the CM by inducting 18 ministers, nine each from his rebel Shiv Sena group and the BJP. The list doesn’t include women, a move being panned by politicians and women’s rights activists. The BJP has 12 women legislators in the state, including one from the Legislative Council. The Shinde group has two women legislators and also the backing of an Independent woman MLA.

There are 28 women legislators in Maharashtra, including three from the Legislative Council. “Maharashtra was the first state in the country to give reservation for women. When 50 per cent of India’s population is of women, they are not represented in the state cabinet,” NCP MP Supriya Sule said. “This shows the BJP’s mindset,” she added. Eighteen MLAs, including state BJP president Chandrakant Patil, were sworn in as cabinet ministers at Raj Bhavan in south Mumbai on Tuesday. The strength of Ma-

harashtra ministry has now gone up to 20, less than half the maximum allowed strength of 43. Governor B S Koshyari administered the oath of office to the ministers. On June 30, Shinde was sworn in as the chief minister and Devendra Fadnavis took oath as deputy CM. The new BJP ministers are Radhakrishna Vikhe Patil, Sudhir Mungantiwar, Chandrakant Patil, Vijaykumar Gavit, Girish Mahajan, Suresh Khade, Ravindra Chavan, Atul Save and Mangalprabhat Lodha.

ENPO reaffirms demand for ‘Frontier Nagaland’ (From p-1) Speaking at the rally, talk team convenor K Asungba Sangtam former MP mentioned that the present area of Eastern Nagaland was historically and geographically never under any foreign rule before the advent of independence of India. He said British colonial rulers had left ENPO area unconquered and unoccupied and therefore let it as an ‘excluded and un-administered area’. Sangtam also cited Article 37(A) Clause 2(B) of the constitution of India, under which the central g o ve r n m e n t p r o v i d e d separate funds to Tuensang district (from where the six districts were carved out of) through Nagaland state. S a n g t a m h ow e ve r lamented that this never took place since most of the representatives of erstwhile Tuensang district were “innocent and ignorant” and on the other hand, the governor did not discharge his constitutional obligation. “The public of this region has lost faith in any kind of development coming forth to them for 50 to 60 years,” he remarked. He also mentioned that the government of India and ENPO have had four “bilateral talks” and two tripartite talks along with the officials of Nagaland state representatives. He said the then union home

minister Rajnath Singh also met the ENPO delegation twice on August 24, 2015 and October 18, 2019. Updating on the statehood demand, ENPO vice president W Bendang Chang reiterated that ENPO was not sleeping and was always in talks with the central government. He said the interaction with the Government of India was consistent, but due to the outbreak of the pandemic no meeting could be made possible. He said On October 13, 2021, ENPO submitted a second reminder letter to the Prime Minister of India after which they were called upon and it was attended by all the ENPO, Eastern Nagaland tribal leaders and Talk Team members. Delivering solidary message on behalf of Tuensang public, United Sangtam Likhum Pumji president Aliba Sangtam, said that the demand for statehood was around 12 years and urged the people not to be disheartened. He said the journey was long and people need to stay united by remembering the pioneers who have paved the way for them. “ENPO is not dead, it is still alive,” he remarked. Speaking on behalf of the students and youth, Chang Wedoshi Setshang president C Pongsu, read out reports from all the sectors including employment sector and education sector.

Another SSLV flight soon: Space Commission member

A S Kiran Kumar

NEW DELHI, AUG 9 (PTI): The failure of India’s newest rocket to put small satellites in orbit was not a setback and the space agency will soon attempt another flight, Space Commission member A S Kiran Kumar has said. Kumar was commenting on the failure of the first demonstration flight of Small Satellite Launch Vehicle (SSLV) to put an earth observation satellite (EOS2) and AzaadiSat, built by girl students from across the country, into the desired orbit on Sunday. “No, no, no. It is not a setback. We were only marginally short in the end,” Kumar, a former Chairman of the Indian

Space Research Organisation (ISRO) told PTI on the sidelines of the KalaariIndian Space Association Networking Meet here. Kumar, who was present at the Sriharikota spaceport for the Sunday launch, said all the three stages of ISRO’s newest rocket performed well and the primary objectives of the launch vehicle were demonstrated well. “It is a question of tweaking certain parts, the way it is operated and the way decisions are made. Very soon they will be attempting the next flight,” he said. Kumar said the SSLV was significant because satellites were now becoming smaller and the new rocket could help India get a share of the small satellite launch market. “All the stages performed well. We were only marginally short in the end. The satellites were placed in an orbit of 350 km x 70 km instead of a circular orbit of 350 km. It is a marginal fault, but then it is a lesson for understanding,” Kumar said.

Channel vision

eflection of the socio-political environment today does seem to indicate that Naga polity has been befuddled by those who propagate a myth of the past and then offering an opaque vision birthed by those, who seem to think that they’re forward looking when in fact they’re backward thinking. Such mindsets don’t meet the demand for a progressive and enlightened environment. One that is abundantly is not the voice of the enlightened and wise or those who love the people that plods society but the voice of those who see everything through the prism of tribe and politics. The emotive social and political narratives only create a cacophony of noises that drown the sane and rational voices. People need to ask themselves as to how long are they willing to remain muted under the present circumstances? The mindset of medieval concepts are today over riding factors that destroy the nutrients for a healthy growth of the society. One common feature in Nagaland has been rhetorical politics which has increasingly pushed socio-economic narrative into bedlam and where real issues so often get drowned out by the din of distraction and deprecation. Reams can be written on the pulls exerted on society, but what needs to be pondered is why have things have gone wrong and how to correct the total drift? The mass-based institutions like the church should play the role of mediator, provider of safe space for open dialogue, identifier of common ground, and promoter of truth-speaking. This is to enable that issues that are crucial to the interests of the people of Nagaland can be deliberated with an open mind so that a consensus and informed opinion is arrived at while looking at and planning the future road map. Standing up for what is right and what is true irrespective of the race or community of the other, will be testimony of the genuineness of the faith and bond of Christian lifestyle that helps bind various people together. Society is hurting and the environment exudes a fissiparous uncertainty which could prove disastrous in the near future. The bond is being removed and replaced by tribal hegemony. Today, affiliation to tribe or any organization is a password to so-called “free speech” and even ‘free action’. The polarized environment means ‘tribe, clan or followers’. The calls for peace and unity are mouthed with glaring regularity but which have gone unfulfilled and inactive. Peace and unity without truth and mutual respect will be reduced to pursuit of tyranny and only promoted fear and hatred that has enabled self-seekers to dominate the society. Meaningful development can only come when society understands the timestested and proven practical principle, that there is a time for everything under heaven. The commitment on the part of the government is directly proportional to the dictates of political interests or serving the interests of power brokers and lobbyists flooding the government corridor. Nagaland has had a quantum leap because of political circumstances but unfortunately society feeds on the past and people need to realize it is time for catching up. Societies across the world are proud of their unique identity or history and the pride is sustained by a sense of responsibility to build a strong foundation for sustenance. It is therefore, a time to accept there is a need to work for the culture of development and progress and not fixed on a culture of looking to the past.

DailyDevotion Prayer in the Father’s Hearing

Jesus lifted up His eyes and said, “Father, I thank You that You have heard Me.” —John 11:41 When the Son of God prays, He is mindful and consciously aware of only His Father. God always hears the prayers of His Son, and if the Son of God has been formed in me (see Galatians 4:19) the Father will always hear my prayers. But I must see to it that the Son of God is exhibited in my human flesh. “…your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit…” (1 Corinthians 6:19), that is, your body is the Bethlehem of God’s Son. Is the Son of God being given His opportunity to work in me? Is the direct simplicity of His life being worked out in me exactly as it was worked out in His life while here on earth? When I come into contact with the everyday occurrences of life as an ordinary human being, is the prayer of God’s eternal Son to His Father being prayed in me? Jesus says, “In that day you will ask in My name…” (John 16:26). What day does He mean? He is referring to the day when the Holy Spirit has come to me and made me one with my Lord. Is the Lord Jesus Christ being abundantly satisfied by your life, or are you exhibiting a walk of spiritual pride before Him? Never let your common sense become so prominent and forceful that it pushes the Son of God to one side. Common sense is a gift that God gave to our human nature— but common sense is not the gift of His Son. Supernatural sense is the gift of His Son, and we should never put our common sense on the throne. The Son always recognizes and identifies with the Father, but common sense has never yet done so and never will. Our ordinary abilities will never worship God unless they are transformed by the indwelling Son of God. We must make sure that our human flesh is kept in perfect submission to Him, allowing Him to work through it moment by moment. Are we living at such a level of human dependence upon Jesus Christ that His life is being exhibited moment by moment in us?

Wasted resources of South Asia

akistan and India, the two South Asian nations and the brainchildren of the igneous twonation theory leading to the infamous partition of India, will be celebrating their 75th Independence Day anniversary this August 14 and 15 respectively. Bangladesh, the third nation to be born in Modern South Asia under the same socio-political process and turmoil that had started after the partition of India in 1947, had already celebrated its 50th Independence Day anniversary last December. The past 75 years should be glorious years for South Asia and the people of this great region sharing common history and culture and shaping their common destiny together albeit with differences in terms of religious beliefs, not forgetting the fact that the region is blessed with an abundance of natural and human resources and social capital that has the potential of making the region as one of the political and economic powerhouses in the world. But reading the postcolonial history of South Asia will leave us with a sense of irreparable loss, grief, despair and anger as the mismanagement of history by leaders of the region had permanently spoiled the beautiful socio-political landscape of South Asia. The communal religious politics that had overtaken the politics of South Asia towards the end of the colo-

nial rule had suddenly pitted one religious community against another leading to the creation of the feeling of hatred, fear and suspicions among the different religious communities of the region. The result of this communal-religious politics turned out to be disastrous as people of the region began to see the idea of India through the lens of religion and resulting in the demand for a separate nation for different religious communities. The atmosphere surrounding the whole of India/South Asia at the time of partition/independence was best described by LK Advani, a Karachi-born India’s leading politician and statesman, who was forced to leave his beloved homeland, Sindh, and seek refuge in Delhi in September 1947: “Instead of the joy of freedom from the British rule, there were shrieks of communal killings and frantic migration of panicked families, hundreds of thousands of them, in both directions… Partition riots resulted in the slaughter of nearly one million Hindus, Sikhs and Muslims on both sides of the hurriedly drawn borders” (LK Advani. My Country, My Life. Rupa and Co., New Delhi, 2008). The fate that befell LK Advani in 1947 was the epitome of the story of millions of Indians in an undivided India who were all tragically uprooted from

their native place and had to seek a place in an unknown world as a result of the partition of India. The world’s worst population displacement in history followed along with the outbreak of the worst communal riots and violence in the modern history of South Asia that claimed millions of lives. For millions of innocent and ordinary Indians, the gory incident that had happened in the subcontinent in 1947 which was otherwise should be known in history as the attainment of freedom from foreign rule, was not a cause for joy and celebration, but a moment of fear, tension and uncertainty. As India and Pakistan evolved into two separate nations from the ashes of this partition’s tragedy, this calamity that befell the region in 1947 continued to haunt the life of the two nations, later three with the creation of Bangladesh in 1971, to this day. As a student of history and going through different social and political dynamics confronting Modern South Asia, I am still convinced that the 1947 Partition of India was not something unavoidable. Today Pakistan and Bangladesh may be Muslim-majority countries and India may be a Hindu-majority country. But before 1947 the Muslims and Hindus belonging to these three nations coexisted together in perfect harmony. In the whole of South Asia, there may be some areas

where certain religious communities were the majority and some were a minority but there were never such official designated areas meant for either Muslims or Hindus as well as for other religious communities. And there was never a period in the history of the last millennia of South Asia where different religious communities were not in a position to live together. It was only during the period leading to 1947 when a few leaders of different religious communities started defining the nation in terms of religion that the concept of Hindu Rashtra and demand for a separate homeland for Muslims unfortunately emerged that permanently sowed the seed of enmity between different religious communities in the region. Despite causing turmoil in the region after 1947, however, over the last two centuries South Asia together had achieved a unique distinction of producing some of the finest human beings the world had ever known: humanists, statesmen, economists, scientists, philosophers and social leaders that were produced in the region in the last two centuries were among the finest and most revered from the world around. Unfortunately, these plethoras of human talents found in the region could not be utilized for the common good of South Asia: Mahatma Gandhi was assassinated in

resource in the world). And along with the abundance of natural resources in the region blessed by Providence, the brain of billions of talented South Asians would be used to make the region as one of the largest, most powerful, richest and vibrant regions/nations in the world. This entire great South Asian prospect was tragically shattered by the dirty partition’s politics, dividing and ruining the whole region. Nevertheless, going by the historical trend of the region, South Asia as a whole is still capable of producing many more human talents that can lead the region towards resolving all the past 70 years’ man-made crisis and take the region on the path of peace, progress and prosperity. The wound of partition may have continued to afflict the region, but if the people and leaders of the region can muster enough courage to put history behind them, unite together and settle their differences then many opportunities too still await the region. Can the people of this great India’s subcontinent put their past bitterness behind and instead embrace the wonderful promises that are offered by the region for reshaping the common glorious South Asian destiny? Our stars from Northeast

S

tarting off, I have a confession to make: I never wanted to be a weightlifter. In fact, I had no interest in taking up the sport as I always wanted to become an archer. I became interested in weightlifting only after I read about Kunjarani Devi, a legend from my home state Manipur, and one of India’s greatest weightlifters. I came to know about her when I was in the eighth standard. What an inspiring story! I was surprised to know she had to sometimes walk many kilometres and at times she cycled — and if I am right, she also stood during bus rides — to reach her training centre. Just like me, she came from a humble family. Despite all odds, she won countless medals for the country. She became my inspiration and it is because of her that my interest grew in the sport of weightlifting. I wanted to do something similar to achieve success! The state weightlifting centre was over 24 km away from my house. It was a daily grind, but one that had to be done. The centre had four platforms for hundreds of trainees; it lagged

behind in facilities. We had to compete against each other and wait for our turns. But it was the only way forward. Our state, like the other Northeastern states, has a history of producing sporting talents. It is not due to great infrastructure, but good coaches. Above all, our families encourage us to pursue our interests. The culture in the Northeast is different, too. Women are independent and empowered. Growing up, I was never told to stay indoors or to concentrate on household stuff because of my gender. While my initial coaches, including Anita Chanu, played an important role in my development early on, it was the support of my family and my mother that helped me realise my potential. I cannot explain how much they had to sacrifice so that I could get all the essentials to survive in my initial years. Athletes from the Northeast have been doing very well for a long time. At the 1948 London Olympics, the flagbearer for the Indian contingent was the legendary Dr Talimeren Ao, the captain of the football team, who was born in present-day Nagaland.

We’ve had top-class sportspersons from the Northeast who have done very well for the country — from older times, you would remember names such as Thoiba Singh, Dingko Singh, Dipankar Bhattacharjee, Monalisa Barua and, of course, Kunjarani Devi. In the last 20-odd years, Northeastern sportspersons have gained greater prominence. One reason is that boxing and weightlifting started having World Championships for women, and we had great role models like Kunjarani Devi, Mary Kom and Sarita Devi. Women have competed in the Olympics in weightlifting since 2000 and in boxing since 2012, and we have done well there. New coaching centres have come up and the infrastructure is improving. I never felt like an outsider in any part of India. I had heard how people from Northeast states had to face ridicule. ‘Chinese’ or ‘Chinky’ were some of the words that were used to discriminate against them, but I have never faced any such discrimination. The only thing people asked me was: ‘Kahan se ho?’ The only problem I faced early on was that

Overpopulation and its impact on the Indian economy

O

1948, Mohammad Ali Jinnah did not live long enough to see his dream nation and died in 1948, Liaquat Ali Khan, the first premier of Pakistan was assassinated in 1951, Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, the founding president of Bangladesh, was assassinated in 1975, Zulfikar Ali Bhutto was hanged in 1979, Indira Gandhi was killed by her own bodyguards in 1984, Gen. Zia ul-Haq was killed in an air crash in 1988, Rajiv Gandhi was assassinated in 1991 and Benazir Bhutto was assassinated in 2007. These departed South Asian leaders may have their own share of wrongdoings but their act of transgressions was committed while handling the crisis and issues that were not their making. By and large, they were the victims of the tragic South Asian crisis that was caused directly or indirectly by the wounds of the Partition of 1947. Had these leaders worked together in an atmosphere of peaceful South Asia, instead of being entangled themselves within the web of the region’s crisis, how powerful and prosperous region they would have created. Just imagine that the three South Asian nations – India, Pakistan and Bangladesh are one unified country today. It would be the world’s largest country in terms of population (Remember human resource is the best and most valuable

verpopulation can be defined as a situation where the total number of the existing human population exceeds the actual carrying capacity. Overpopulation is also the major cause which is affecting the Economy of all the problems and natural calamities faced by the environment. The global population touched the 7th Billion on 31st October 2011. The world has been growing by 1 billion every 10 to 12 years recently standing alone with almost 7.5th billion in 2016. India’s share alone is more than 1.2 billion in the population and currently India’s population is 1.39 crores. There are many economic and social factors leading to the population growth rate and some factors are low mortality rate, high birth rate, illiteracy, lack of family planning, large-scale migration, etc. Also, depletion of natural resources in one place results in overpopulation at some other place where the resources are abandoned. Some of the problems related to overpopulation include: 1. Resources depletion: One of the major causes of overpopulation is the depletion of resources over a population area, the more people using specific resources increases results in fast consump-

tion covering the rapid depletion of resources. Vital resources like food and water are scarce in case of overpopulation even the basic health and transport facilities become rare. 2. Unemployment: One of the major problems of the world today is unemployment and is one of the most severe consequences of overpopulation. The more the number of people in an area the lesser the job opportunity. Thus, unemployment becomes a significant ill effect of overpopulation. 3. Poverty: The greater the unemployment issue the higher will be the chances of increasing the poverty level which can be regarded as the need consequence of unemployment caused by overpopulation. However, poverty is also connected to scarcity of resources and basic needs of health and education arising out of Overpopulation. Thus we can say that a crowded place will always have poor unemployment opportunities, leading to poverty. 4. Poor law and order: Economic problems like poverty unemployment, and depletion, of natural resources arising out of overpopulation results in poor law and order conditions which will force people to take up the illegal profession of robbery, and other criminal activities increas-

ing the crime rate, as those people will require the basic needs for living. There are many other impacts on the economy of a particular country that may arise due to overpopulation leading to social, economic, and development issues. So it is very important to make the people aware of the ill effects of overpopulation in the most insignificant method to eliminate it, which can be removed through awareness operating proper education in school, colleges, seminars or workshops in villages, etc., or by advertising through different modes of communication which include Social media as an important tool to make such awareness about overpopulation. When people understand that the quality of life depends on the number of family members and the lesser the member the better and the higher it will be. The fight against overpopulation will not be much easy but it is necessary, unless the population of the world is kept under control it would not be possible to achieve the development that the world socks. I struggled to understand Hindi. My first national camp callup came in 2010-11 and it was held in Bengaluru. Forget Hindi, I would struggle to understand the locals there. Thankfully, I was lucky as most of the senior weightlifters in that camp were from Manipur and acted as my interpreters initially. I am comfortable in Hindi now. Coaches only converse in Hindi and it helps to know the language. I can understand some Punjabi as well. After all, I have stayed in Patiala for a number of years. I still can’t speak it, but can understand some of it. I have always felt ‘Indian’. I have been given a lot of love from everyone. Yes, the people from my state adore me, but I can confidently say that I have been loved by all people across India. One of the reasons, I feel, is that unlike 10 years back, our results are now splashed all over social media. Be it any national or international meet, the public now knows about our achievements, good or bad. They read about us more, they get to know our backgrounds and I think they relate to us ath-

letes. People are accepting us as Indians more and more as they genuinely feel that we are winning medals representing our country, not just the Northeast. Like all good things, there is a dark aspect when it comes to social media. ‘Who is Sushila Devi?’ was trending on social media on the day she won a silver medal in judo at the Commonwealth Games earlier this week. It is not as if she was making her debut this time or that she is an unknown athlete — she had represented India at the previous Commonwealth Games and was part of India’s Olympics contingent in Tokyo last year. Representing our country at the Olympics is a great honour and people should respect that. Though I have no problem with social media, I keep away as I am mostly concentrating on my training. But I do post things on social media from time to time. It is good to interact with fans. Quit India anniv: Sonia exhorts people to defend freedom with ‘all might’ CONG ALLEGES RSS SUPPORTED BRITISH AMID BRUTAL REPRESSION

NEW DELHI, AUG 9 (PTI): On the Quit India movement anniversary, Congress chief Sonia Gandhi on Tuesday exhorted countrymen to defend the country’s freedom with “all our might”, while the opposition party also hit out at the RSS, alleging that it supported the British amid brutal repression at that time. In her message on the occasion, Gandhi said that on this historic day, Aruna Asif Ali held aloft the National flag when lakhs and lakhs of Congress workers were beaten and jailed. Her act of courage became the symbol of our quest for freedom, Sonia Gandhi said. “As we commemorate the Quit India movement led by Mahatma Gandhi, let us not forget the price that millions of our countrymen and women paid for India’s freedom. Let us renew our resolve to defend it and protect it with all our might,” she said.

NAGALAND POST, DIMAPUR WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 10, 2022

Sonia Gandhi “When the country under the Congress leadership was engaged in a decisive struggle against the British, the RSS not only boycotted the movement but also actively supported the British,” the Congress said in Hindi on its official Twitter handle. Attacking the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh asked what the organisation was doing 80 years ago on this historic day when Mahatma launched Quit India. “It was on the sidelines dissociating itself from the mass movement. Shyama Prasad Mookherjee took no

part while Gandhi,Nehru, Patel, Azad, Prasad, Pant and many others were jailed,” he said in a tweet. In a message in Hindi on the 80th anniversary of the Quit India Movement, Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra also slammed the RSS, saying when the whole country was fighting unitedly, the RSS appealed to Indians to give up on the movement and supported the British during the period of brutal repression. During the Quit India movement, people of every class, caste, religion, region and age unitedly raised a battle cry which said, “Britishers Quit India”, she noted in her message. “Gandhi ji, Nehru ji, Sardar Patel ji and Maulana Azad were arrested as soon as the movement was announced. Then, Aruna Asaf Ali ji hoisted the tricolor at the Azad Kranti Maidan (Gowalia Tank Maidan) to keep the flame of the movement burning,” Priyanka

Gandhi said. “Repression increased. The offices of the Indian National Congress were demolished. People were arrested all over the country. But, the slogan of the Quit India Movement was adopted by the people. The battle cry of the august revolution drove the Britishers out of India and on August 15, 1947, we got freedom,” she said. Paying homage to the fighters and martyrs of the movement, Priyanka Gandhi urged people to take a pledge that they will give their all to keep alive the ideals of the freedom movement. In a tweet, she said that on this day, with the slogan of Quit India, Indians unitedly started a ‘do or die’ struggle against the brutal British rule. Unity is our greatest strength, she added. “Let us take a pledge to ‘Unite India (Bharat Jodo)’ and add new dimensions of development in India, raising the flag of unity in diversity,” Priyanka Gandhi said.

Terrorist arrested in UP for planing I-Day attack

LU C K N OW, AU G 9 (PTI): The Uttar Pradesh Police on Tuesday arrested an alleged terrorists with Islamic State links who was planning a terror attack on Independence Day, an official said here. The Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) of the police arrested Sabauddin Azmi, a member of the Asaduddin Owaisi-led AIMIM, after questioning him at its Lucknow headquarters, Additional Director General of Police (ADG), Law and Order, Prashant Kumar said in a statement. The suspect, a resident of the of Amilo area of Azamgarh district, also goes by the names Dilawar Khan and Bairam Khan, the statement said. A case has been registered against Azmi, who was in direct contact with an ISIS recruiter, under sections of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act and the Arms Act, it added. The ATS has seized materials used in making bombs, an illegal weapon and cartridges from the accused, the statement said.

Absconding politician Shrikant Tyagi arrested from Meerut; 3 aides also held

NOIDA, AUG 9 (PTI): Absconding politician Shrikant Tyagi was arrested Tuesday from Meerut, officials said, days after he was seen in a social media video abusing and assaulting a woman for objecting to his alleged illegal constructions at a housing society here. “Tyagi’s three associates were also held along with him,” a senior Noida police officer told PTI. Before the arrests, Tyagi’s wife was once again detained for questioning Tuesday morning in the case lodged at the Phase 2 police station here, according to officials. Tyagi, who was at large since Friday evening, had Monday moved a court in the Gautam Buddh Nagar district with a plea for surrender-related procedures. The hearing in the matter has been listed for August 10. He moved the court plea soon after the Noida Police declared him “absconding” and announced a reward of Rs 25,000 on his arrest. Until he went underground Friday night, Tyagi

Shrikant Tyagi

claimed to be the national executive member of the BJP’s Kisan Morcha and the national co-coordinator of its Yuva Samiti, even as the ruling party denied any links with him. The Opposition has also mounted an attack on the BJP over the issue, sharing purported pictures of Tyagi with senior saffron party leaders, including its national president J P Nadda. Tyagi had allegedly hurled expletives and assaulted the woman co-resident of Grand Omaxe who had objected to him planting trees in the common area of the society in Noida Sector 93B last Friday. Tyagi had claimed he was well within

his rights to do so. As videos of the episode went viral on social media and drew condemnation, an FIR was lodged and Tyagi booked under Indian Penal Code section 354 (assault or use of criminal force on any woman, intending to outrage or knowing it to be likely that he will thereby outrage her modesty). Later, charges under IPC sections 323 (voluntarily causing hurt), 504 (intentional insult to provoke breach of public peace), 506 (criminal intimidation), 447 (criminal trespass) were also added in the case, officials said. During the probe, the police also impounded two vehicles of Tyagi which were found in violation of the Motor Vehicles Act. One of his SUVs, the officials said, had a symbol of the Uttar Pradesh government on it but it was unauthorised. Subsequently, another FIR was lodged under IPC sections 419 (cheating by impersonation), 420 (cheating) and 482 (using false property mark), the officials added.

on board for the Vice Presidential election. Congress spokesperson and deputy leader in Lok Sabha Gaurav Gogoi said the government knew about the holidays beforehand and asked why it did not plan accordingly. “We have exposed the real face of the BJP government during the session. They talk of productivity, but there is zero accountability on their part,” he said. Terming the Monsoon session as “extremely disappointing”, Ramesh said, “There was no enthusiasm or appetite on part of the government to get bills passed. Normally the opposition says the House should be adjourned but this

time the government had no appetite to run the house”. He said the reason cited for curtailing the session “was that BJP MPs don’t want to return after Raksha Bandhan on August 11” and added that the houses could have sat on August 10. “The government had no business in its agenda. The floor management was not good. Earlier the prime minister used to ignore Parliament and now even the ministers are doing so,” Ramesh charged. He referred to the absence of Education minister Dharmendra Pradhan when the Central University Bill was being piloted in Rajya Sabha on Monday.

He also noted that “cadre mobilisation of the Congress on people’s issues and ED high-handedness” was a “great benefit of the Monsoon session for the party and the August 5 antiED protest put the government and even Home Minister Amit Shah on the backfoot.” “We are agitating not only in Parliament, but, there are limits to agitation in Parliament because our job in Parliament is to allow Parliament to run, not to disrupt Parliament,” Ramesh said. He, however, said it was a matter of some disappointment that they could not get one opposition party

Heavy security arrangements were put in place at Chandni Chowk area which was decked up with tricolours and flower on the occasion. A cultural programme was organised at the Town Hall there where children from various schools performed. “I’m glad that a large number of students turned up for this cultural programme. He said the government had listed 32 bills at the start of the session but managed to pass only seven in the Lok Sabha and five in the Rajya Sabha. “It was also extraordinary that one-and-a-half days of proceedings were disrupted by treasury benches which kept insisting on an apology from Congress president Sonia Gandhi for remarks made by the leader of the party in Lok Sabha who had already apologised for his statement both verbally as well as in writing,” Ramesh said. He said the coming together of opposition parties to demand a review of the Supreme Court’s order on PMLA is a “huge step towards strengthening democracy”. “It is a matter of great satisfaction that all opposition parties, 16 opposition parties came together to raise serious concerns on the Supreme Court judgment on the PMLA amendments that were carried out between 2014 and 2018 and have called for a review of that judgment and that statement has already been circulated,” Ramesh noted.

NEW DELHI, AUG 9 (PTI): Hundreds of people with national flags gathered at the Red Fort on Tuesday to take part in the ‘Tiranga Yatra’ which will pass through eight locations that were visited by Mahatma Gandhi here during the freedom struggle. NEW DELHI, AUG 9 (PTI): The Congress on Tuesday termed the Monsoon session of Parliament as “highly disappointing” and claimed the government did not have an appetite to run proceedings even though the Opposition was willing to sit till the very end to debate and pass bills. The Monsoon session ended on Monday, four days ahead of schedule, after continued disruptions during the last three weeks over issues like price rise, suspension of 27 MPs, the controversial “Rashtrapatni” remark and the Enforcement Directorate’s action. The principal opposition party questioned the decision to curtail the session and alleged that after the prime minister, his ministers too were “ignoring” Parliament. The Opposition was ready to sit on August 10 and 12 to discuss and pass bills but the government was in a rush to curtail the session, AICC general secretary, communication, and party’s chief whip in Rajya Sabha Jairam Ramesh said at a press conference.

C H E N NA I , AU G 9 (IANS): The Indian tractor industry sold 59,586 units last month down from 80,980 units sold during July 2021, said Tractor Junction, a digital marketplace for tractors and farm equipment. According to Tractor Junction, five states Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Maharashtra, Karnataka and Gujarat- accounted for the majority of tractor sales last month. The decline is largely due to a high base of the previous year and an uneven spread of the monsoon season. The month of July witnessed floods, water logging, and heavy rains throwing normal life out of gear. The sales figures do not include the sales data from the states of Madhya Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, Tractor Junction said.

N E W D E L H I , AU G 9 (PTI): Home and Cooperation Minister Amit Shah on Tuesday pitched for reforms in cooperative societies, saying the same person cannot be elected year after year and the election process has to become more transparent. by securing a pan-India footprint of 3.5 GHz and 26 GHz bands and select purchase of radiowaves in the low and mid-band spectrum for a total consideration of Rs 43,040 crore. Vittal said the company’s capital expenditure will remain around the existing levels and played down the need for buying premium spectrum in the 700 megahertz band, which requires less number of mobile towers for coverage compared to other bands that telecom operators currently have. “Our competition

Finally, the last advantage of NSA is around experience it will allow for a faster call connect time on Voice. In addition, it allows us to provide a faster uplink than anyone else given our massive spectrum holdings in the mid band,” Vittal said. The country’s largest telecom player Jio claims to have completed 5G coverage planning in the top 1,000 cities and conducted field trials of its home-grown 5G telecom gears. It is the only player that has purchased premium 700 Mhz spectrum. Vittal said that Airtel has recorded industr yleading average revenue per user of Rs 183 and expects it to soon touch Rs 200

Do remember that if we did not have this large chunk of precious mid-band spectrum we would have had no choice but to buy expensive 700 Mhz spectrum. “And once we had bought it we would have had to deploy large power guzzling radios on this band. Not only would the cost have been higher, but it would also have led to more carbon emissions,” Vittal said. He said that the network deployment in the 700 Mhz band gives no additional coverage compared to the 900 Mhz spectrum band that the company has. Vittal said nonstandalone (NSA) 5G networks have more benefits compared to standalone 5G networks because of wider coverage and more devices available to access the network. Netaji’s ‘Delhi Chalo’ site becomes Taiwan holds military drills to counter China Singapore’s 75th national monument

BEIJING/TAIPEI, AUG 9 (PTI): Beleaguered Taiwan turned belligerent on Tuesday and conducted its own military drills to counter China’s unprecedented war games around the breakaway island which entered its fifth day with no respite in sight. Launching its own military live-fire drills, Taiwan has accused Beijing of using US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s visit to Taipei last week to prepare for the invasion of the self-ruled island which China claims as part of the mainland under its one-China policy. The Taiwanese military has launched its firing target flares and artillery for several hours, Lou Woei-jye, the spokesman for Taiwan’s Eighth Army Corps told the media in Taipei. Taiwan’s military said the drills would once again take place on Thursday which will include the deployment of hundreds of troops and 40 howitzers. The Eastern Theatre Command of the Chinese People’s Liberation Army (PLA) announced that it

continues to organise joint combat exercises and training in the waters and airspace around Taiwan Island on August 9, with emphasis on the joint blockade and joint support operations. Reacting to Taiwan’s military drills, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Wang Wenbin told a media briefing in Beijing on Tuesday that the root cause of the current tensions across the Taiwan Strait is that the DPP (ruling Democratic Progressive Party) authori-

ties have been colluding with foreign forces to seek independence and make provocations. They refuse to recognise the one-China principle and attempt to change the status quo that both sides of the Taiwan Strait belong to one and the same China, he said. “We want to make it clear to the Taiwan authorities that any attempt to go against the trend of history or to resist reunification with military force is bound

to be rejected by all Chinese people and become futile. Such attempts are doomed to fail,” he said. The PLA initially announced the unprecedented military drills in Taiwan Strait involving all arms of its military from August 4-7 but continued beyond the schedule with no end in sight. China’s official media reports said the continuation of the drills will be a new normal around Taiwan aimed at crippling the island which broke away from

China in 1949 opting to be a democracy opposing the Chinese Communist Party rule. Recent polls show an overwhelming majority of Taiwanese oppose any sort of unification with China, and a large and growing majority consider themselves “Taiwanese” and not “Chinese”, the BBC reported. In Taipei, the Taiwanese Foreign Minister Joseph Wu in his address to the international media on Tuesday alleged that “China has used the drills in its military play-book to prepare for the invasion of Taiwan”, using Pelosi’s visit as a pretext. “It is conducting largescale military exercises and missile launches, as well as cyberattacks, disinformation, and economic coercion, in an attempt to weaken public morale in Taiwan,” he said, according to the text of his remarks released by the Taiwanese Foreign Ministry. Wu said, “China has openly declared its ownership over the Taiwan Strait” separating China and Taiwan.

SINGAPORE, AUG 9 (PTI): Singapore on Tuesday declared its iconic green site Padang, from where Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose gave the slogan of ‘Delhi Chalo’ in July 1943, as its 75th national monument as the city-state celebrates its 57th National Day. The large field, popular for sporting events such as cricket, football, hockey, tennis and lawn bowling, is one of the oldest open spaces continuously used since the 1800s. The Padang was gazetted on Tuesday as Singapore celebrated its 57th National Day amid a parade by uniform groups and colourful display of local culture and dances by schools and civic groups. In view of its strong national, historical and social significance, the Padang is now preserved and accorded the highest level of protection in Singapore under the Preservation of Monuments Act, said the National Heritage

Nagasaki marks 77th A-bombing anniversary

TOKYO, AUG 9 (AP): Nagasaki paid tribute to the victims of the US atomic bombing 77 years ago on August 9, with the mayor saying Russia’s war on Ukraine showed the world that another nuclear attack is not just a worry but “a tangible and present crisis.” Mayor Tomihisa Taue, in his speech Tuesday at the Nagasaki Peace Park, said nuclear weapons can be used as long as they exist, and their elimination is the only way to save the future of humankind. Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and threat of nuclear weapons use came only a month after it and four other nuclear powers pledged in a statement that nuclear war should never be fought, Taue noted. “This has shown the world that the use of nuclear weapons is not a groundless fear but a tangible and present crisis,” he said. The belief that nuclear weapons can

Rishi Sunak promises financial aid for poor

LONDON, AUG 9 (PTI): Former Chancellor Rishi Sunak on Tuesday promised to provide more money to help people cope with soaring household energy bills if he is elected Britain’s Prime Minister next month. The 42-year-old Indian-origin finalist in the Conservative Party leadership election pledged government “efficiency savings” to fund the support, while limiting borrowing. His pledge came as energy consultancy Cornwall Insight issued a forecast to say that household heating bills are expected to rise even further this winter than previously predicted. “There is no doubt in my mind that more support will be needed,” Mr Sunak said.

be possessed not for actual use but for deterrence “is a fantasy, nothing more than a mere hope.” As in Hiroshima, Russia and its ally Belarus were not invited to the memorial event in Nagasaki. The United States dropped the world’s first atomic bomb on Hiroshima on Aug. 6, 1945, destroying the city and killing 140,000 people. It dropped a second bomb three days later on Nagasaki, killing another 70,000. Japan surrendered

on Aug. 15, ending World War II and Japan’s nearly half-century of aggression in Asia. Participants, including diplomats from nuclear states, observed a moment of silence at 11:02 a.m., the moment the bomb exploded above the southern Japanese city on Aug 9, 1945. Although Russia last week tried to roll back on Putin’s warning, fears of a third atomic bombing have grown amid Russia’s threats of nuclear attack since its war on Ukraine began in

February. Russia last week shelled a Ukrainian city close to Europe’s largest nuclear plant. Prime Minister Fumio Kishida said, “Even though we face a severe security environment, we must pursue the history of non-nuclear use and make Nagasaki the last place of nuclear attack.” Japanese officials worry that the conflict may embolden China to be even more assertive in East Asia, and the government is pushing to further step up its military capability and spending. Japan renounces its own possession, production or hosting of nuclear weapons, but as a U.S. ally Japan hosts 50,000 American troops and is protected by the U.S. nuclear umbrella. Still, Russia’s nuclear threat has prompted some hawkish lawmakers in the governing party have also proposed a possibility of nuclear sharing with the United States.

WASHINGTON, AUG 9 (PTI): The FBI has raided Donald Trump’s private club and residence in Florida and broke open a safe as part of a reported probe into the handling of presidential documents, including classified materials, triggering an angry outburst from the former US president who called it an attempt to block his 2024 White House bid. “These are dark times for our nation, as my beautiful home, Mar-A-Lago in Palm Beach, Florida, is currently under siege, raided, and occupied by a large group of FBI agents. Nothing like this has ever happened to a President of the United States before, Trump said in a statement Monday evening. The FBI search was related to the 15 boxes of documents that Trump took to Mar-a-Lago when he departed the White House in January 2021 -some of which the National Archives has said were marked classified, according to US media reports.

In January, Trump handed over the documents to the National Archives, and attorneys for Trump said they were searching for any more records they may have. Govt files review application in Supreme Court after FIFA threat

NEW DELHI, AUG 9 (IANS): Succumbing to the pressure from the international football federation (FIFA) and the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) threatening to ban the All India Football Federation (AIFF) if it does not start the election process by August 15 and conclude it by Sept 15, the Government of India through the Sports Ministry has filed an application with the Supreme Court seeking modification of the top court’s order dated August 3, 2022, so that the process could be concluded before the deadline set by FIFA-AFC. On August 5, FIFAAFC had warned that if it finds the AIFF governance is not under democratic administration on or before September 15, there is a likelihood of stringent action being taken against AIFF, which would result in the withdrawal of host-

ing rights of the Women’s U-17 World Cup. In the prayer, the ministry has requested the apex court that in light of the exigency of the situation, the order dated August 3 be modified “to the extent of stating that interim arrangement of Elections to the Executive Committee of AIFF be held as per the time schedule already indicated in the tabulated statement set out in the said order, on the basis of the pre-existing membership structure of the AIFF.” The ministry stated that in view of the unresolved status of objections submitted by various stakeholders, the finalisation of the AIFF draft constitution would take time, adding that the elections were necessary to avoid any adverse action on the part of FIFAAFC, “to whom the AIFF is affiliated.” The ministry urged the

Supreme Court to modify its August 3 order to the extent that the election process be allowed, and assured that the objections of all relevant stakeholders will be addressed by the new elected body in the draft constitution. While making the prayer, the sports ministry made several observations to cite that the draft constitution that was submitted by the Committee of Administrators (CoA) to the Supreme Court on July 15, 2022, suffers from deficiency of inaccurate crosslinkage and referencing of various article in the document, as well as deficiencies in properly numbering of articles and sub-articles. The ministry added that, from a collective reading of the aforesaid correspondence, it emerges that the FIFA-AFC have strong reservations in the membership structure of AIFF.

Coach Minichiello banned for Kohli, Rahul back for Asia Cup; Bumrah out injured life over inappropriate conduct

LONDON, AUG 9 (REUTERS): Toni Minichiello, who guided Britain’s Jessica Ennis-Hill to the heptathlon gold at London 2012, has been banned for life after a disciplinary panel appointed by the UK Athletics (UKA) Board found him to have engaged in sexually inappropriate behaviour. Minichiello was provisionally suspended last year pending an investigation into complaints from female athletes. The panel on Tuesday announced Minichiello had made inappropriate sexual references and gestures to athletes. Reuters has requested comment from Minichiello, who has always denied any wrongdoing. The panel added that he also failed to respect the athletes right to a private life by making intrusive enquiries and personal comments about their personal lives

and engaged in sexually physical behaviour -- the unwanted touching of athletes. He engaged in inappropriate and sometimes aggressive behaviour, bullying as well as emotional abuse, the panel said. “UKA has considered the matter and decided that these findings are of the utmost seriousness,” the governing body

said in a statement. “They amount to a large number of breaches of the UKA Coach Licence Terms over a 15-year period. “They constitute gross breaches of trust by Minichiello which have had severe consequences for the mental health and mental wellbeing of the athletes under his charge. “It is noted that during the process of these disciplinary matters, Minichiello’s coaching licence expired and therefore cannot be suspended/subject to a sanction. Therefore, UKA has decided it will not entertain any future application made by Minichiello for a UKA Coach Licence in perpetuity.”

NEW DELHI, AUG 9 (AGENCIES): Virat Kohli and K.L. Rahul returned to the Indian team for the Asia Cup, while a back injury ruled out Jasprit Bumrah from the six-team event in the United Arab Emirates from August 27. There was suspense over Rahul’s inclusion. He missed India’s tour of West Indies and Zimbabwe due to COVID-19, but the Chetan Sharma-led national selection committee named him as the vice-captain, Sportstar reported. With the T20 World Cup in Australia just a couple of months away, the selectors chose to exercise caution with Bumrah, who has been suffering from back spasm for some

time. He last played an ODI against England on July 14 and was rested for the limited overs series against the West Indies. Along with Bumrah, pacer Harshal Patel, too missed out due to a side strain. Both are currently undergoing rehabilitation at the National Cricket

Academy in Bengaluru. In Bumrah’s absence, Bhuvneshwar Kumar will spearhead the pace department with Arshdeep Singh and Avesh Khan. However, former national selection committee chairman Krishnamachari Srikkanth said on Star Sports’ Follow the

Blues show that he would have liked to see Mohammed Shami in the squad. The presence of Hardik Pandya gives India a fourth pace bowling option. Given Pandya’s form, the team management has high expectations from him. Deepak Chahar, who is recovering from an injury, has been kept as a stand-by along with Shreyas Iyer and Axar Patel. Despite trying out Iyer for the West Indies series, the selectors decided to go ahead with Deepak Hooda and Suryakumar Yadav in the middle-order. Dinesh Karthik - who has been in red-hot form since the IPL earlier this year - has been picked as a ‘finisher’.

So, there was pop music, British Jamaican reggae, Punjabi Bhangra, Asian crossover music, Apache Indian, and local bands presenting their hit numbers producing sounds that are part of a multi-cultural society like Birmingham, at the closing ceremony on Monday evening. The athletes walked in a random parade to music. The Indian contingent, comprising mostly of officials and some athletes like members of the TT squad, was led by flagbearers boxer Nikhat Zareen and top shuttler Sharad Kamal. NAGALAND POST, DIMAPUR WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 10, 2022

India’s ends with 61 medals N E W D E L H I , AU G 9 (AGENCIES): India ended its Commonwealth Games 2022 campaign in Birmingham with 61 medals, which included 22 Gold, 16 Silver and 23 Bronze Medals. India also managed to top the medal table in four different events at CWG 2022 — weightlifting, table tennis/para table tennis, badminton and wrestling. What’s more, India’s boxing medal haul was the second best in the sport. However, one event that was absent at the Games was shooting, a sport India has dominated over the years, with the last edition of the Games having 16 medallists from India (seven gold, four silver, five bronze). This was only the second Commonwealth Games without shooting since the event’s inception in 1966, the other being in 1970. Sportstar compares India’s performance in the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham to that over the years, without shooting since 1966. Tyson Fury and Derek Chisora in one of the bout.

LO N D O N, AU G 9 (AGENCIES): Tyson Fury has urged Derek Chisora to accept his offer to fight him in a trilogy bout. T h e W B C h e av y weight champion, 33, said he was retiring after his last win over Dillian Whyte in April, BBC reported. But speaking on Instagram, Fury revealed he had made an offer to veteran heavyweight Chisora, whom he has beaten twice. “You’re running, Derek, from the trilogy,” Fury said. “You call yourself war, you should call yourself chicken.” Chisora, 38, defeated Kubrat Pulev on points in

July and has resisted calls for him to retire. The victory over Pulev ended a three-fight losing streak and Chisora said after that win he would like to fight Deontay Wilder or Fury. “I’ve decided to come back to boxing because I can be the first heavyweight world champion in history to have two trilogies,” added Fury, confirming reports he was seriously considering fighting again. “I’d always say I’d fight Derek Chisora at the end of my career.” Fur y beat Chisora on points in 2011 before defeating him in their re-

match three years later. Chisora’s promoter Eddie Hearn confirmed last week Chisora had received an offer from Fury’s camp, but had turned it down as it “wasn’t enough money”. Fury also claimed on social media he has hired a new trainer, his long-time friend and fellow fighter Isaac Lowe. American SugarHill Steward has trained him since 2019, helping Fury overcome Wilder in their trilogy. Briton Lowe, still active as a featherweight pro fighter at 28, has no previous training experience.
