Cyprus detects new ‘Deltacron’ Covid variant Combination of at least 10 mutations of the Delta and Omicron variants N E W D E L H I , JA N 9 (IANS): Cyprus has detected a new variant dubbed as “Deltacron”, that has a similar genetic background to the Delta variant, coupled with 10 mutations from Omicron. The variant has already affected 25 people in Cyprus. According to Dr Leondios Kostrikis, the head of the laboratory of biotechnology and molecular virology at the University of Cyprus, of the 25 samples taken in Cyprus, 11 were hospitalised due to the virus, while 14 were from the general population, the Cyprus Mail reported. Kostrikis stated that the fact that the frequency

of the mutation among hospitalised patients was higher could point to a correlation between the new variant and hospitalisations. However, the new variant was not something to worry about at the moment, Cyprus’s Health Minister Michalis Hadjipandelas was quoted as saying. It is “quite possible” that the new strain has not been found elsewhere, and the sequences of the cases have been sent to GISAID, an open access database that tracks developments in the coronavirus, the Cyprus Mail reported. India records 1.59L new Covid cases in 24 hours

NEW DELHI, JAN 9 (PTI): In the biggest oneday spike in nine months, more than 1.59 lakh Covid-19 cases were recorded in India on Sunday that pushed the country's active caseload to 5.90 lakh, said the Health ministry, adding that the daily positivity rate has increased to 10.21%. Meanwhile, 327 deaths were reported in the last 24 hours. The country also saw a massive spike in its Omicron tally after it jumped to 3,623 from 3,071 on the previous day, as per the ministry's data which also said that 1,409 such patients have recovered from the infection. Maharashtra remains the worst-hit state with 1,009 Omicron cases, followed by Delhi- 513, Karnataka-441, Rajasthan-373, Kerala-333, Gujarat-204, Tamil Nadu-185, Haryana-123, Telangana-123 and Uttar Pradesh-113.

creases the chances of a new variant as a result of them trading genes. In line with this, France recently detected a variant with 46 mutations, and was dubbed as IHU. The new variant from the lineage named B.1.640.2 is believed to have infected 12 people in the country, according to the yet-to-be peer-reviewed study supported by the French government. While it may pose a greater risk than Omicron, touted as highly transmissible but mild in infections and less lethal than previous the Delta variant, researchers said, “it is too early to speculate on virological, epidemiological or clinical features of this IHU variant based on (just) 12 cases”. Cases of simultaneous flu and Covid-19 infections have also been detected - 2 in the US and 1 in Israel. While in the US, ‘Flurona’ was found in two young children, in Israel it was detected in a pregnant woman. National health experts feel that though Covid cases may peak in India very soon, the current wave driven by the Omicron variant of the virus may ebb equally fast. “Global data and our own experience during the past five weeks reveal that the infection caused by Omicron is mostly either asymptomatic or mild. Few seriously ill hospitalised patients either had other

co-morbidities and are over 60 years of age. The overall hospitalisation rate for people affected by Omicron is 1-2 per cent, which is much less to the rate of people requiring care in hospital during the Covid wave caused by the Delta,” Dr N K Arora, chairman of the Covid-19 working group of the National Technical Advisory Group on Immunization, told the Times of India.
