CM inaugurates ‘The People’s Bridge’ Correspondent

Farmers to hold daily tractor march during Parl Session

KOHIMA, NOV 9 (NPN): State chief minister Neiphiu Rio on Tuesday virtually inaugurated “The People’s Bridge” over Yijung river in Tuensang district. The 70-feet long metal hanging bridge, built at a cost of approximately Rs. 1.20 crore, was a joint initiative spearheaded by Eleutheros Christian Society (ECS) and supported by the villagers, various state departments, organizations including Assam Rifles, BRO and also the local legislator of the area. The bridge at Longphang connecting three villages will also serve as a lifeline to many other villagers. Speaking at the inaugural programme, Rio said that the initiative taken by ECS was a perfect example and a lesson for everyone– local communities, district administration and departments concerned– that if there was convergence of interest and they come together, many things could be achieved. Congratulating ECS and all the people involved on completing the bridge, Rio observed that the bridge was possible because of the

NEW DELHI, NOV 9 (PTI): To observe one year of the movement against the Centre’s three agri laws, 500 farmers will participate in a peaceful tractor march to Parliament every day during the Winter Session starting November 29, the Samyukta Kisan Morcha said. Farmers from Punjab, Haryana and Uttar Pradesh have been protesting against the laws, which were stayed by the Supreme Court in January, at the Delhi borders since November 26 last year. The SKM, an umbrella body of 40 farmer unions leading the stir, announced the tractor march after it held a meeting here. Farmer leaders, who were present in the meeting, said that those participating in the tractor march will sit wherever the police will stop them. In a statement, the amalgam said that it will observe one year of the movement on and after November 26 in a massive way all over India. “The SKM decided that from November 29 until the end of this Parliament session, 500 selected farmer volunteers will move every day to Parliament in tractor trollies...” it said.

visionary leadership, unity and coming together of people. He said unless stakeholders, the community, took ownership and participated in any project, nothing would be possible. Rio mentioned that the State government had seen the strength of community because of which communitisation was introduced in education, health, power and infrastructure sectors, especially in building village roads, but regretted that most of these remained on paper only. The chief minister urged the people to utilise community strength by taking ECS’s initiative as an example, adding that this should serve an eye-opener and that such initiatives should be taken in all districts.

Assuring to fully support ECS in all its endeavour, he hoped that the people’s bridge would improve interconnectivity, promote harmony and bring economic prosperity to the area. He observed that Nagas refused to pay taxes for upkeep of their own towns. Hence, as Nagaland did not implement the Urban Local Bodies Act, Rio said that the Finance Commission did not grant the municipal funds. Rio remarked that it was up to the people whether to develop their towns by paying minimal taxes or remain backward and continue blaming the government. Pointing out that women were more educated and enterprising today and their contribution to society was immense, Rio appealed to the people of Nagaland to

not oppose the implementation of the Nagaland Municipal Act. Though there has been stiff opposition to women reservation in ULBs, Rio clarified that the Urban Local Bodies Act did not exempt Nagaland and the issue was yet to be resolved. In his brief address on convergence as an approach for infrastructure development, principal secretary (Roads & Bridges) Menukhol John said the construction and completion of the people’s bridge was a perfect example of convergence. Narrating how Longphang primary health centre (PHC) was initially started, he said it was the only PHC in the country having AIDS hospice and where patients from other States also come for healthcare services. State lost Rs. 135 cr Central grant meant for ULBs, says Rio Correspondent

KOHIMA, NOV 9 (NPN): State government had lost about Rs. 135 crore during the 14th Finance Commission for failing to have the Urban Local Bodies (ULBs), while the State was deprived of funds under the 15th FC for not being able to hold the ULB elections. Interacting with media persons at Hotel Vivor here on the sideline of an event, Rio said during the recent meeting with apex civil society organisations, it was decided to set up a committee headed by chief secretary, with principal secretary as member secretary and nominees from ENPO, CNTC and TPO along with one woman to study the matter. While the panel was mulling its plan of action, he pointed out that it was the duty of an elected government to ensure that the local bodies were not run by administrators, thereby making it necessary to nominate people to run them. Rio said there would be reservation for women and assured that it would be only a stop-gap arrangement, adding that whenever the committee came up with its report, a

detailed formula would be worked out and that there would be elections. On the opposition to the nomination formula, Rio maintained that this was a democracy and everyone had the right to voice their opinion. Rio questioned why there cannot be a process of nomination to run municipal and town councils and challenged those opposing to give valid reasons. On the issue of women reservation, Rio explained that the 73rd Amendment of Panchayati Raj was applicable only to rural local bodies and hence Nagaland was exempted from it along with States like Meghalaya and Mizoram. Though people in the State believed that tradi-

tional system of administration was applicable in urban local bodies, he pointed out that election or nomination was required as per the 74th Amendment since urban areas were cosmopolitan. Rio cautioned that if one did not wish to follow the Municipal/Town Council Acts, such bodies would not receive any grant from the Centre and pressure would increase on the government to provide monetary help. NLTP Act: Asked whether the government was mulling to invite Nagaland Baptist Church Council to discuss the issue of partially lifting Nagaland Liquor Total Prohibition Act, Rio said that further discussions were necessary on the matter.

‘Nagaland will be a very special state’ Meanwhile, chief minister Neiphiu Rio said that in the event a final agreement to the Naga political issue is arrived at, Nagaland would become a “very special state”. “Many new things will be added to us and we will be a very special state if any agreement comes,” said Rio. Rio said that signing of the Framework Agreement and the Agreed Position meant that a system would be formulated in the Indian Union on how to protect the uniqueness of Naga history. On NSCN (I-M)’s firm stand on the demand for a separate Naga flag and constitution, Rio said that discussions were ongoing and hence it would not be wise on his part to comment on the issue.

DIMAPUR, NOV 9 (NPN): Nagaland on Tuesday recorded 13 fresh Covid-19 positive cases while no deaths were reported during the day. Of the fresh cases, nine were from Dimapur, two in Kohima and one each in Kiphire and Wokha, taking the total caseload to 31951. Further, the death toll remained unchanged at 689 (including 16 non-Covid deaths but with positivity). Meanwhile, a total of 1226953 persons have been inoculated against Covid-19 as on November 9, including 715411 first dose and 511542 second dose. PTI: India logged 10,126 new Covid-19 infections, the lowest in 266 days, pushing the total tally of cases to 3,43,77,113. The death toll climbed to 4,61,389 with 332 fresh fatalities, the Health ministry stated. The cumulative doses administered in the country so far under the nationwide COVID-19 vaccination drive has exceeded 109.08 crore.

DIMAPUR, NOV 9 (NPN): Core Committee of the Parliamentary Committee on Naga Political Issue would be meeting Naga political groups (NPGs)-NSCN (I-M) and WC, NNPGs next week to revisit what was shared in previous meetings “with new insights”. Informing this to a section of media after the committee’s meeting at the residential office of chief minister Neiphiu Rio at Sovima here, adviser Science & Technology, IT&C and NRE Mmhonlumo Kikon said the meeting was held to review the past meetings and the recent ones held in Delhi with NPGs and Government of India officials. The members also deliberated on the Naga political issue and the way forward, he added.

tors had come together under one umbrella (United Democratic Alliance) to strengthen the ongoing peace talks and “to ensure that the cry of people are put on the table when we talk to various entities, as we represent our people.” With that strength, he claimed that the committee had been going ahead with its discussions with the negotiating parties. Asked about the recent statement by NPGs seeking clarity from the State government on its role as facilitator, Kikon maintained that the matter was discussed at length at the meeting, adding that the committee had come across statements by NSCN (I-M) too. He assured that the committee would be addressing the

any issue that required further deliberation or clarification. Asked what was holding back the final solution, the adviser replied that it was not for the Government of Nagaland to comment, pointing out that it was between the negotiating parties. He however assured that the core committee as facilitators would listen, discuss and give suggestions. “In our role as facilitators, we will be listening and discussing and also give our suggestions,” he was categorical. Kikon sid that such negotiations would definitely take time, but said it was the Core Committee’s hope and prayed that Nagas would have an early solution. “With that hope, we are moving forward ahead with our role as facilitators,” he said.

Land owners oppose plan to divest Doyang Hydro-Electric Plant Civic reception for Dr. Jamir today DIMAPUR, NOV 9 (NPN): Reacting to the state-r un NTPC drawing a Rs 15,000 crore divestment plan to list North Eastern Electric Power Corporation (NEEPCO) Limited, which runs Doyang Hydro-Electric Plant (DHEP), by March 2024, the Land Owners’ Union (LOU), DHEP has appealed to the state government to impress upon the Centre against selling/divestment of DHEP to any private

entities. PTI had recently reported that the Rs 15,000 crore divestment plan was as per agreed targets of performance set by the NTPC with the Ministry of Power. In a press release, LOU DHEP president Rhanbemo Odyuo and general secretary P Roland Ezung stated that NEEPCO Ltd., Government of Nagaland and the land owners of the area signed tripartite agreement for setting up Doy-

It said that the Centre’s “unilateral decision” clearly violated the agreement signed between the three parties (Government of Nagaland, NEEPCO LTD and the Land Owners’ Union, DHEP) for a period of 99 years lease. The union also pointed out that the state government and the land owners had a number of negotiations to arrive at setting up of DHEP and handed over to NEEPCO Ltd

by the 17 land affected villages through an agreement of land acquisition signed on February 28, 1984 with an area of 8,420.41 acres of land. It said that the land affected villages of DHEP had agreed to part with their cultivable land solely for the development of power project of NEEPCO Ltd, (Government of India enterprise) and not to any corporation or private agencies. KOHIMA, NOV 9 (NPN): After it was conceptualized as a one-day mega festival of all Naga festivals in 2000, the Hornbill Festival today, has undergone an endearing change, reflecting the need to entertain and enlighten domestic and foreign visitors and at the same time, promote tourism. One crucial aspect of the annual event is that there is no lack of ideas within the government and talents among the people, mostly

youth to put up an excellent show every year. In order to sustain the evolution of the Hornbill Festival, there have been numerous suggestions made in Nagaland Post since 2000 and still continuing. It was suggested to the government, that some of the events such as cultural items, food fest and handicrafts etc be held at the Agro Expo at Dimapur. Besides catering to more domestic tourists from nearby states, who can travel by road or train or even flight from Guwahati or Imphal,

Dimapur also has a sizeable population of other nonNaga communities. Sometime in 201 It was also mentioned that in order to make Nagaland as an allyear round festival-destination, there was urgent need for improving road condition, creating tourism infrastructures at districts having tourist attractions etc. Air connectivity to and from Dimapur should also be scheduled to facilitate easy travel of air passengers from home and abroad. Expansion and moderniza-

tion of Dimapur Airport has been long overdue. Train schedules to and from Dimapur work against easy travel because not even one long distance train starts from Dimapur. There are around 42 long distance passenger and express trains starting from either Tinsukia or Dibrugarh. Dimapur should have at least ten long distance trains by merit of being the second highest revenue earner for the NF Railway. According to a study titled “Economic Impact Assessment and Analysis of

Hornbill Festival 2019” conducted by the department of tourism in collaboration with M/S Indihut consultancy with MBA students from Nagaland University, several suggestions were also made to take the festival to a higher level in order to promote tourism and trade etc. Tourism in every sense of the term has a global meaning of free travel, trade and stay. Tourists visiting Kisama for Hornbill Festival loved local brew popularly known as ‘ Zutho’( or Naga rice beer). (Cont’d on p-) K Y M C

DIMAPUR: Citizens good road campaign, a Sumi Hoho (SH) initiative, was flagged off Tuesday at Zungti village junction by deputy commissioner (DC) Zunheboto, Peter Lichamo. According to a DIPR report, DC lauded Sumi Hoho for the “great initiative” and said that such campaign was “new” for him and others. Describing Zunheboto as a “land of roads”, Lichamo however lamented that roads were not maintained and expressed hope that the campaign would “go a long way” in bringing about a change.

He also called upon the people to “generously contribute” so as to make the campaign a success. He further hoped that not only Sumis but other Naga tribes would also emulate this example In a keynote address Sumi Hoho president Nikheto Jimomi said that through the campaign the hoho aims to set an example to Sumi community that it was possible to execute “big projects” through “little contributions” from the community. Jimomi said so far, the response has been “very encouraging” and that the

project aims to cover 60 kilometres and that the work has begaun from Kandiniu road. In a speech, Sumi Kukami Hoho president, Kashito Yepthomi lauded the Sumi Hoho team for taking up such a “challenging project”. He said the Kandiniu road was not just for Sumis but for all and urged every individual to come forward, join hands and support the project. The ceremony was chaired by Sumi Hoho general secretary, Dr Vihuto Asumi and prayer was said by SBAK Nito Mount executive secretary, Rev. Hukugha Zhimo.

He said that it has been his long-time dream to introduce quality civil service coaching for the students of the state free of cost, while expressing his heartfelt appreciation to ALS IAS Academy and its officials for making it possible. He said that youths of the state do not lack in talent and knowledge but they earlier did not have adequate opportunity and proper guidance. Ever since he became the chief minister of the state, he started applying his mind to tap and groom these talents, and worked in that line accordingly, he added. He also advised the students to be disciplined in whatever they endeavour, stating that “discipline is the foundation of success.” State education minister S Rajen Singh said that

apart from infrastructure development works, the incumbent government had done many unique things that the past governments did not do. Keep fighting ‘corrupt’ BJP govt: Rahul Gandhi on Rafale

NEW DELHI, NOV 9 (PTI): Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Tuesday asked his party colleagues to not stop or be afraid of fighting against the “corrupt” central government as truth was with them in every step. His remarks came a day after a French investigative journal Mediapart made fresh claims that alleged bogus invoices were used that enabled French aircraft maker Dassault Aviation to pay at least 7.5 million euros in secret commissions to a middleman to help it secure the Rafale deal with India. There was no reaction yet from the defence ministry or Dassault Aviation on the latest report “When the truth is with you in every step, then what is there to worry about? My Congress colleagues - keep fighting like this against the corrupt central government. Don’t stop, don’t get tired, don’t be afraid,” Gandhi

Rahul Gandhi

said in a tweet in Hindi, using the hashtag “#RafaleScam”. According to Mediapart’s investigation, Dassault Aviation paid the kickbacks to the intermediary in Mauritius between 2007 and 2012. Mediapart had reported in July that a French judge has been appointed to lead a “highly sensitive” judicial investigation into suspected corruption” and favouritism in the Rs 59,000-crore intergovernmental deal with India for the supply of 36 Rafale fighter jets. The NDA government had inked the deal on Sep-

tember 23, 2016, to procure 36 Rafale jets from Dassault Aviation after a nearly seven-year exercise to procure 126 Medium Multi-Role Combat Aircraft (MMRCA) for the Indian Air Force did not fructify during the UPA regime. The Congress had accused the government of massive irregularities in the deal, alleging that it was procuring each aircraft at a cost of over Rs 1,670 crore as against Rs 526 crore finalised by the UPA government during the negotiations for the MMRCA. Prior to the 2019 Lok Sabha election, the Congress had raised several questions about the deal and alleged corruption, but the government had rejected all the charges. Rafale manufacturer Dassault Aviation and India’s defence ministry have previously trashed allegations of any corruption in the contract.

NATIONAL INC should be renamed ‘I Need Commission’: BJP NEW DELHI, NOV 9 (PTI): Seizing on a French media report that commissions were paid between 2007 and 2012 for securing the Rafale deal with India, the BJP on Tuesday said the INC should be renamed as “I Need Commission” and alleged that the Congress’ dissatisfaction with the cut on offer was behind the failed negotiations when it was in power. BJP spokesperson Sambit Patra launched a scathing attack on the Congress leadership, especially Rahul Gandhi who has been alleging corruption in the purchase of the fighter aircraft by the Modi government, and accused him of spreading “canard, disinformation and lies”. Patra also sought Rahul Gandhi’s response to the fresh revelation by French investigative journal Mediapart. He should respond to this from Italy, Patra said, citing reports that the Congress leader is currently not in India.

VOL. XXXI NO. 336 DIMAPUR, WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 10, 2021

Demonetisation revisited

F

ive years after prime minister Narendra Modi delivered a massive blow on the entire economy of the nation with the avowed aim of breaking the grip of corruption and black money, the sad part of the report card says that it was like fighting a mirage as nothing was achieved. On the night of November 8, 2016 Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s surgical strike against black money and source of terror funding caught the entire nation, even including his own finance minister and cabinet by total surprise. Modi declared that his government has decided that five hundred rupee and thousand rupees currency notes in use, will no longer be legal tender Instead, the midnight swoop badly affected the economy and at least one hundred people died out of shock or while standing for hours under the sun to exchange their high denomination currency notes. The attempted denomination turned out to be a case of throwing the baby with the bathwater. Demonetization is necessary whenever there is a change of national currency. The old unit of currency must be retired and replaced with a new currency unit. This is not carried out like a cloak-and-dagger operation but after announcement and gradually. However, those involved in the demonetization believed that surprise and secrecy were necessary to catch black-money hoarders off guard to prevent them from getting rid of their illegal funds over the next four hours. However, thousands went on buying spree for jewellery and property. Some black money got converted into assets that could be monetised later on. The fatal flow in the understanding behind the policy is that black money is not just cash. There is a distinction between income and wealth. Black income generation is a process based on economic activity. On the other hand, wealth is held in a variety of forms like, in undervalued inventory or balances held in tax havens abroad. Just before demonetisation was announced, there was Rs 18 lakh crore of currency in circulation. Large denomination currency notes of Rs 1,000 and Rs 500 constituted 85% of that amount. With demonetisation, the denotified notes could not be used except for a few purposes such as to buy fuel at petrol pumps, groceries at Kendriya Bhandars and medicines. They could not be used even for trade and manufacturing. Worse, the suddenness resulted in thousands of SME units shutting down and lakhs of jobs were destroyed. A statement by RBI disclosed that based on the verification process when completed, the estimated value of Specified Bank Notes (SBNs) received as on June 30, 2017, is `15.28 trillion.” This means that just Rs 10,720 crore of the junked currency notes did not return to the banking system. It was estimated in June 2017 that by January 10, 2017, 99% of denotified high denomination notes had been returned to the banks. This was confirmed by the Reserve Bank of India in August 2017. In brief, demonetisation neither eliminated black money nor stopped black income from being generated. The government realised its mistake and changed the goalpost. It argued that the move would make the economy “cashless”. The government wants people to forget its failed demonetisation, failure to create 1 crore jobs within 2014, bringing back all black money from foreign banks and depositing Rs.15 lakh into every family’s bank account . The moot point is whether people are willing to forget them?

DailyDevotion Sacred Service I now rejoice in my sufferings for you, and fill up in my flesh what is lacking in the afflictions of Christ… —Colossians 1:24 The Christian worker has to be a sacred “gobetween.” He must be so closely identified with his Lord and the reality of His redemption that Christ can continually bring His creating life through him. I am not referring to the strength of one individual’s personality being superimposed on another, but the real presence of Christ coming through every aspect of the worker’s life. When we preach the historical facts of the life and death of our Lord as they are conveyed in the New Testament, our words are made sacred. God uses these words, on the basis of His redemption, to create something in those who listen which otherwise could never have been created. If we simply preach the effects of redemption in the human life instead of the revealed, divine truth regarding Jesus Himself, the result is not new birth in those who listen. The result is a refined religious lifestyle, and the Spirit of God cannot witness to it because such preaching is in a realm other than His. We must make sure that we are living in such harmony with God that as we proclaim His truth He can create in others those things which He alone can do. When we say, “What a wonderful personality, what a fascinating person, and what wonderful insight!” then what opportunity does the gospel of God have through all of that? It cannot get through, because the attraction is to the messenger and not the message. If a person attracts through his personality, that becomes his appeal. If, however, he is identified with the Lord Himself, then the appeal becomes what Jesus Christ can do. The danger is to glory in men, yet Jesus says we are to lift up only Him (see John 12:32).

R

What does the recent spate of violence in the Rohingya camps mean for the Rohingya crisis?

ising violence in the Ro h i n g ya c a m p s has added a new and alarming dimension to the Rohingya crisis. It has deeper security implications at the domestic and regional levels. Evidence shows that, although there had been occasional incidents of crime and violence in the past, the Rohingya camps had been relatively calm, defying many alarmists who had thought that the camps would become dens of terrorism and radicalization. However, the gruesome killing of Mohib Ullah, the chairman of the Arakan Rohingya Society for Peace and Human Rights, on September 29, 2021 in the Rohingya refugee camp of Lambashia, Kutupalong in Cox’s Bazar and the subsequent deaths of 7 others in the camps have caused a paradigm shift with regards to the Rohingya crisis. On October 22, 2021, attackers killed at least seven people in an assault on an Islamic seminary in the Balukhali refugee camp. The police could not confirm the exact number of total wounded during the incident but a Doctors Without Borders (MSF) physician who requested anonymity stated that 20 individuals were seriously injured. Reports show that the camps have become more dangerous, with armed gangs fighting for dominance, kidnapping opponents, and threatening women if they violate orthodox Islamic rules. Why have the relatively peaceful camps become violent? To address this question, we need to dig into the death of Mohib Ullah. Prior to his death, Mohib Ullah had been facing threats. He told Reuters in 2019: “If I die, I’m fine. I will give my life. If suddenly there’s an ‘ac-

C

cident,’ no problem. Every community worker gives his life in the end.” He documented various atrocities committed against the Rohingya by Myanmar’s military. Mohib Ullah was known as a teacher in the refugee community, and had come to prominence after going from hut to hut in the camps, collecting evidence of abuse, including mass killings and gang rapes. He had expressed his gratitude toward the Bangladesh government for sheltering the Rohingya and publicly pledged to return home with his fellow refugees as soon they received the rights they were demanding. Behind the plot: Facts and issues Evidence shows that the incident had been planned from before. It was cold-blooded murder and was carried out due to his growing influence as a leader of the Rohingya people. According to multiple fieldlevel officials, some terrorist and criminal organizations in the camps are actively working to hinder repatriation as they benefit from life at the camps. Mohib Ullah was in favour of repatriation. He encouraged ordinary Rohingya to return to their homeland and they listened to him. In addition, he had received several death threats in the past, especially following a gathering of more than 200,000 refugees in Cox’s Bazar to observe the Rohingya Genocide Remembrance Day on August 25, 2019 under the banner of his organization, the Arakan Rohingya Society for Peace and Human Rights (ARSPH). His organization claims that the threats were from the Arakan Rohingya Salvation Army (ARSA)

and other armed groups that contested his leadership. Multiple Reasons The rising crime and violence may have several causes. First, as Bangladesh has been emphasizing that the Rohingya crisis would turn into a regional problem due to linkages with transnational crime networks, the current context of violence attests to this reality. Asylum seekers, displaced people, and refugees are always vulnerable to the influence of criminal groups. The prolonged presence of the Rohingya in Bangladesh has created a conducive environment for different gangs and terrorist outfits to extend their activities and exploit these people. In this context, the name of the Arakan Rohingya Salvation Army (ARSA) is prominent. Habib Ullah, a brother of Mohib Ullah, blamed ARSA for the murder. He had recognized three of the attackers -they were Abdur Rokim, Murshid, and Lalu -- and claimed that Abdur Rokim was a member of ARSA. The most explosive evidence is one where Mohib Ullah states unequivocally that “they (ARSA) work hand in glove with the Myanmar government.” According to the police, Rokim and his gang have been controlling abduction, extortion, and drug trafficking in the area for a long time by holding the Rohingya hostage at different camps. Interestingly, ARSA has denied any responsibility and has condemned the murder, blaming “transnational border-based criminals” for it in a statement. Second, uncertainty about repatriation is a key reason behind the frustration among the Rohingya in the camps and a tool for the

The future of work is hybrid

OVID-19 has changed the way we work. Even before the pandemic, the U.S. workforce increasingly relied on remote collaboration technologies like videoconferencing and Slack. The global crisis accelerated the adoption of these work tools and practices in an unprecedented way. By April 2020, about half of companies reported that more than 80% of their employees worked from home because of COVID-19. That shift was made possible by decades of research into, and then development of, technologies that support remote work, but not everyone uses these technologies with the same ease. As early as 1987, groundbreaking research identified some of the challenges facing women working from home using technology. That included the difficulties of child care, work-home separation and employee growth opportunities. Since that time, we have learned much more about virtual collaboration. As an associate professor of information systems, I’m interested in what we can expect as we eagerly anticipate a post-pandemic future. One thing stands out: Hybrid work arrangements – that is, employees who do some tasks in the office and others virtually – is clearly going to be a big part of the picture. One survey from April 2021 shows 99% of human resources leaders expect employees to work in some kind of hybrid arrangement moving forward. Many have already begun. As just one example, Dropbox, the file hosting service, made a permanent shift during the pandemic, allowing employees to work from home and hold team meetings in the office. The definition of “hybrid” varies in other organizations. Some workers might be in the office a couple days a week or every other day. Other businesses may require only occasional faceto-face time, perhaps meeting in a centralized location once each quarter. Either way, research does

show many companies fail in their implementation of a virtual workforce. In-office work promotes structure and transparency, which may increase trust between management and workers. Developing an organizational culture happens naturally. Casual office conversations – a worker walking down the hall for a quick and unscheduled chat with a colleague, for instance – can lead to knowledge-sharing and collaborative problem-solving. That’s difficult to replicate in a virtual environment, which often relies on advance scheduling for online meetings – although that’s still feasible with enough planning and communication. But if you look at different metrics, in-office work loses out to working from home. My recent research discovered remote workers report more productivity and enjoy working from home because of the flexibility, the ability to wear casual clothes, and the shortened or nonexistent commute time. Remote work also saves money. There is a significant cost savings for office space, one of the largest budget line items for organizations. Hybrid arrangements attempt to combine the best of both worlds. It’s true that hybrid work faces many of the same obstacles of face-to-face work. Poor planning and communication, ineffective or unnecessary meetings and confusion about task responsibilities happen remotely as well as in-person. Perhaps the largest issue when working at home: technology and security concerns. Home networks, an easier target for cyberthreats, are typically more vulnerable than office networks. Remote workers are also more likely to share computers with someone else outside of their organization. Hybrid organizations must invest upfront to work through these complicated and often expensive issues. With hybrid work, managers cannot see the work taking place. That means they must measure employee performance based on outcomes with clear performance

criminal gangs to take advantage of. There is no denying the fact that repatriation is the only plausible solution to the Rohingya crisis. The Myanmar political regimes have been fighting counterinsurgency wars for more than seven decades only to add more bloodshed and violence from both sides. The failure of the international community and the Myanmar government to ensure the safe and dignified return of the Rohingya to their homeland provides the biggest impetus to the violent groups to perpetrate these crimes and become involved in violent extremism. ARSA and Harakah al-Yaqin are the two widely mentioned groups active in the camps. Third, the international community has also failed to channel adequate fund for the Rohingya. Although the different local and international humanitarian groups have been crying for funds to support the 1.1 million displaced Rohingya, the response from the donors have been unsatisfactory. Finally, the involvement of the Myanmar regime is also widely mentioned as a cause behind creating unrest and lawlessness in the camps with an aim to stalling the repatriation process. It is also to prove that the Rohingya are terrorists as the Myanmar government has repeatedly been claiming to the international community. How does it affect Bangladesh? Bangladesh has sheltered the Rohingya on humanitarian grounds despite the challenges associated with the crisis. Bangladesh has extended its resources abundantly in the interest of the Rohingya people. Forests have been destroyed

metrics rather than the traditional focus on employee behavior. Another potential pitfall: Fault lines can develop within hybrid teams – that is, misunderstandings or miscommunication between those in the office and those at home. These two groups may start to divide, potentially leading to tension and conflicts between them – an us-versus-them scenario. Numerous recommendations exist on the best way to develop a hybrid model. Here are a few of the best ideas. Meeting too often or with little purpose – that is, meeting for the sake of meeting – leads to fatigue and burnout. Not everyone needs to be at every meeting, yet finesse from management is required to make sure no one feels left out. And meeting-free days can help with productivity and allow employees a block of uninterrupted time to focus on complex projects. Listening to employees is critical to making sure the hybrid environment is working. Continually seeking feedback, through one-on-one conversations, focus groups or human resources surveys, is important too. So is recognizing and rewarding employees with in-person or virtual kudos for their achievements. Performance incentives, such as financial rewards or tokens of appreciation including food delivery, help develop a supportive culture that increases employee commitment. Finally: Both managers and employees must be transparent in their communication and understanding of hybrid plans. Policies must be in place to define what tasks happen in the office and remotely. Access to reliable communications is essential, particularly for remote work. All employees must receive the same information at the same time, and in a timely manner. After all, whether in the office or online, workers don’t want to feel they’re the last to know. (As published by The Conversation)

to construct camps, and the government has allocated funds and provided massive security and administrative services. Local host communities have also shared their resources. However, with time, the crisis has presented security challenges for Bangladesh on several fronts. First, growing crime in the camps has deteriorated social security and safety in the region. People around the region feel unsafe and often attacked by muggers. Yaba and other deadly drugs have become more widely available. Second, proliferation of small arms in the area and beyond is a major security challenge. Armed groups have allegedly been buying arms from local and international traffickers through sea routes, which could deteriorate the security situation in Cox’s Bazar drastically. They might even sell some of those arms to local Bangladeshi criminals. Third, the traditional drug trafficking/narco cartel problem has further deteriorated with their prolonged presence, particularly with such a large number of the Rohingya, much higher than the population of Bhutan. Fourth, factions among the Rohingya are continuously engaged in group rivalry and criminal activity. Radical groups have also kept their eyes in the camps for recruitment. ARSA and Harakh Al-Yaqin and a host of other violent outfits are reportedly active in the camp areas. F u r t h e r m o r e, t h e activities of the criminal gangs and factionalism in the camps are tarnishing the image of Bangladesh. Many powerful states and international governmental and non-governmental organiza-

tions and global civil society actors unjustly blame the Bangladesh government for the situations in the camps. It is an irony that when the problem has been created by the Myanmar regime and no great power came to shelter the perpetrated Rohingyas, they point their fingers at Bangladesh. Finally, the continuing instability and unrest in the Rohingya camps forces the government to remain engaged and allocate more resources. For example, the government of Bangladesh has constructed world class facilities for the displaced people in Bhasan Char from its own exchequer, at a cost of $310 million. In conclusion, the violence is part of a big plan. It is aimed at undermining the repatriation process on the one hand, and on the other, creating insecurity and instability in critically important geopolitical regions of Bangladesh. Some external powers have hatched conspiracies to reverse development and progress of Bangladesh as the country is enjoying the longest period of political stability and prosperity. Undoubtedly, these incidents signal the very danger of the existence of terror and violent groups in the camps that may create severe security threats to both Bangladesh and the Rohingya community. And beyond this, it also has ramifications for the regions of South Asia, Southeast Asia, and the Bay of Bengal. Tonmoy Chowdhury is an independent researcher and freelance writer. Career in science for development

P

romotion of science is essential for the progress of humanity and all other living organisms on earth. One of the days which have been observed for more than two decades is observance of World Science Day for Peace and Development on 10th November and the day highlights the significant role of science in society and the need to engage the wider public in debates on emerging scientific issues. It also underlines the importance and relevance of science in our daily lives. By linking science more closely with society, World Science Day for Peace and Development aims to ensure that citizens are kept informed of developments in science. It also underscores the role scientists play in broadening our understanding of the remarkable, fragile planet we call home and in making our societies more sustainable. The year 2021 marks 20th edition of World Science Day for Peace and Development. With climate change becoming a serious threat to the lives of billions of people and the planet, this year’s celebration will highlight the importance of “Building ClimateReady Communities”. Discussing about the day also encourages us to take up science as our career. When we talk about science as a career then the subjects which come to our mind include mathematics , physics , chemistry , zoology , botany , geology , environmental science , engineering , medical , etc . All those who are good in academics and love subjects like mathematics and science during school days may take up science as their future career. Many students feel that these subjects are tough but the fact is anyone may excel in science subjects for which they need to know their capacities and basic ideas. Any student may start their planning related to science from secondary level or from class IX onwards. One must know that we have to be familiar and friendly with subjects like Mathematics and Science from our school days. We can choose and take admission in science stream after Class X. There are many subjects in science stream

and they can be chosen according to our qualifications or interests. Students may choose to study specific subjects like Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, etc after their senior secondary level. There are other options apart from these subjects like epidemiologists who examine the causes of diseases to prevent them from transmitting and recurring, including investigating the triggers of an infection for a public health agency or collecting blood samples at an outpatient care center. These medical scientists might work in hospitals, laboratories or universities, or for pharmaceutical companies or health insurers and we have seen their demand as we have seen the recent pandemic. An epidemiologist, also known as a medical scientist, conducts infection surveillance – tracking infections, reading data, assessing where problems may reside and deciding where intervention is needed. Talbot says epidemiologists have the opportunity to provide thoughtful, scientific analysis to help improve the care of patients and the safety of health care workers. We shall publish more about careers in science for peace and development in our forthcoming editions. Exam Update: MAT: Management Aptitude Test (MAT) is a standardised test being administered since 1988 to facilitate Business Schools (BSchools) to screen candidates for admission to MBA and allied programmes. Bir Singh extortion case: 2 cops Malik bought land from underworld: Fadnavis Param remanded in CID custody for 7 days

MUMBAI, NOV 9 (PTI): Leader of Opposition in the Maharashtra Assembly Devendra Fadnavis on Tuesday alleged that state minister Nawab Malik and his family members entered into land deals with people associated with the underworld. Speaking to reporters here, Fadnavis also claimed he did not have this information earlier (when he was the state’s chief minister). The BJP leader said had he found this previously, he would have exposed NCP leader Malik earlier. Notably, Malik earlier this month sought to link the BJP with an alleged narcotics dealer by tweeting the latter’s photograph with the former chief minister’s wife Amruta Fadnavis. Malik had also posted a similar photograph of Devendra

Land owners oppose plan to... (From p-1) The union said that “such drastic and adverse policy of disinvestment and privatization” of NEEPCO Ltd by NTPC Limited would directly impinge on the rights, privileges, employment opportunities and other benefits that were offered to the land affected populace in lieu of the thousands of acres of land handed over by the affected land owners for the construction of power project. Fur ther, the union pointed out that currently the appointment and engagement of local employees of the DHEP were mainly as a compensatory appointment against the loss of their cultivable land for construction and establishment of Doyang project. It said that the land and its resources were the inalienable rights of the local people as envisaged under Article 371 A. The union has, therefore, asserted that the disinvestment policy enunciated by the NTPC Ltd would impinge on the rights as guaranteed by Article 371 A. In order to safeguard the signed agreement and the ‘rights’ and ‘welfare’ of the land affected villages, the union has strongly demanded withdrawal of the disinvestment/privatization of DHEP to any private entities by NTPC Ltd., which it said was against the interest and breach of trust with 17 land affected villages of DHEP by NEEPCO Ltd. and government of Nagaland.

Fadnavis with alleged the drug dealer. The former CM had then said he will make revelations about Malik’s “underworld links” after Diwali and also share the same with NCP president Sharad Pawar. On Tuesday, Fadnavis said, “Nawab Malik and his family members were part of a company which purchased land in Kurla (area of Mumbai) at a very low rate by making some fictitious documents. There

are four such land purchase deals where I can firmly say that Malik has entered into land deals with the underworld.” He claimed the land was purchased from Sardar Shahwali Khan and Saleem Ishaq Patel, who were convicted in the 1993 Mumbai serial blasts case. “Why did you do business with the killers of Mumbaikars?” the BJP leader asked. “Another question arises that why did these

two accused persons sell their land to Malik? They were about to get convicted under then TADA (Terrorist and Disruptive Activities Prevention Act). As per that legal provision, all the properties of convicts get attached and come under government control. Did Malik help them to avoid such land on prime location from getting attached?” he asked. The LoP claimed Nawab Malik’s son Faraz Malik had signed the agreement documents of the Kurla land deal with Sardar Shahwali Khan and Saleem Ishaq Patel. “I did not have this information earlier (during chief ministerial tenure). Had I found it, I would have exposed him (Nawab Malik) earlier. I will submit these documents to appropriate authorities like

the CBI, ED or NIA. I will also share a copy of it with NCP chief Sharad Pawar,” he said. N awa b M a l i k h a s since last month levelled a series of allegations against Narcotics Control Bureau’s (NCB) Mumbai zonal director Sameer Wankhede after he led a raid on a cruise ship, following which actor Shah Rukh Khan’s son Aryan Khan and some others were arrested. The NCP leader’s sonin-law Sameer Khan was also arrested by the NCB earlier this year in an alleged drugs case and was later granted bail by a court. On November 1, Devendra Fadnavis had said Malik’s attack on the NCB was an attempt to put pressure on officials of the antidrugs agency so that the case against his son-in-law is weakened.

MUMBAI, NOV 9 (PTI): A Mumbai court on Tuesday remanded two police officers in the custody of the Maharashtra Criminal Investigation Department (CID) custody for seven days in connection with an extortion case registered at Marine Drive police station here against them and former city police commissioner Param Bir Singh. The two cops - inspectors Nandkumar Gopale and Asha Korke - who were previously posted in the Mumbai crime branch, were arrested by the CID on Monday. Gopale was currently posted at the Khandala police training centre, and Korke in the Naigaon local arms unit. The duo was arrested following a complaint filed by real estate developer Shyamsunder Agrawal at the

Nandkumar Gopale

Marine Drive police station on July 22 this year on the charge of extortion. On Tuesday, the two accused were produced before additional chief metropolitan magistrate R M Nerlikar. The court remanded them in the CID’s custody for further probe into the case. The FIR names Param Bir Singh and seven others, including five police officers. Besides Korke and Gopale, the other police officers named in the FIR are DCP (crime branch) Akbar

Pathan, Assistant Commissioner of Police Shrikant Shinde and ACP Sanjay Patil. During the investigation into the case, police had arrested Agarwal’s former business partner Sanjay Punamia and his associate Sunil Jain. The CID was also entrusted with the investigation of a case registered against Shyamsunder Agrawal under the Maharashtra Control of Organised Crimes Act (MCOCA) at Juhu police station for his alleged links with underworld gangster Chhota Shakeel. Agrawal had alleged that based on this “false” case, Param Bir Singh and other police officers extorted money from him at the behest of his former business partner Sanjay Punamiya, as per the FIR.

‘Free spraying of bio-decomposer in Punjab Cruise case: Prabhakar appears before NCB for 2nd day to stop stubble burning if AAP forms govt’

NEW DELHI, NOV 9 (PTI): AAP leader and Delhi Environment Minister Gopal Rai on Tuesday said free spraying of bio-decomposer will be ensured in Punjab to curb crop residue burning if his party forms government in the state. The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) is the main opposition party in Punjab, where assembly elections are slated for next year. Farmers cannot be blamed for unrestrained crop residue burning in neighbouring states

as it is the governments there which have failed to provide an alternative, Rai said. The share of farm fires in Delhi’s pollution rose to a three-year high of 48 per cent on Sunday, and on Monday, government agencies reported 5,450 farm fires, the highest this season, in neighboring states of the national capital. “Farmers are not at fault. Any statement against them does not make any sense. The governments had to provide a solution. We have shown (how stubble

burning can be curbed) in Delhi. Other states lack the will to do it,” he said. “We will ensure free spraying of bio-decomposer in every field in Punjab if we form a government in the state... like we did in Delhi,” Rai said in response to a question. He had earlier told PTI that Punjab, which generates around 20 million tons of paddy straw annually, will become free from crop stubble burning if the AAP forms government in the state.

MUMBAI, NOV 9 (PTI): Prabhakar Sail, an independent witness, appeared before the Narcotics Control Bureau’s Delhi vigilance team here for the second day on Tuesday in connection with its probe into the pay-off allegations in the cruise drugs case in which Bollywood actor Shah Rukh Khan’s son Aryan Khan is an accused, an NCB official said. Sail was on Monday questioned by the NCB for over 10 hours. NCB’s Deputy Director General (northern re-

gion) Gyaneshwar Singh, who is heading the vigilance team, earlier said Sail was called again on Tuesday for questioning. A c c o r d i n g ly, S a i l reached the Central Reserve Police Force’s (CRPF) mess in suburban Bandra around 11.55 am along with his lawyer Tushar Khandare, an NCB official said. The NCB’s vigilance team, headed by Singh, who is also chief vigilance officer (CVO) of the federal anti-narcotics agency, had reached here from Delhi on Monday morning.

Civilian killings Pak conspiracy to disturb peace: J&K BJP chief JAMMU, NOV 9 (PTI): Jammu and Kashmir BJP president Ravinder Raina on Tuesday said the targeted killing of innocent civilians by terrorists in the valley is a conspiracy of Pakistan to disturb peace in the Union Territory. He said Pakistan is the biggest enemy of Kashmiri Muslims and Islam. Condemning the killing of a salesman, Mohammad Ibrahim Khan, at Bohri Kadal locality of downtown Srinagar on Monday evening, Raina said Pakistani cowards have committed another grave sin by shedding the blood of an innocent who was out to earn a livelihood for his family. “The killing of civil-

ians shows the frustration of Pakistan which is a murderer of Kashmiri Muslims and enemy of Islam. Pakistani terrorists are frustrated by the successful counter-insurgency operations by our police, paramilitary forces and army and have hence resorted to the killings of unarmed civilians under the cover of darkness to disturb the peaceful atmosphere,” Raina said. He said the Pakistani terrorists have killed thousands of innocents over the past 30 years but “our forces are determined to finish them along with their supporters and sympathisers”.

Prabhakar Sail

Sail, who claims to be the bodyguard of NCB witness KP Gosavi, last month alleged in an affidavit that he had heard Gosavi discussing a Rs 25 crore payoff deal after Aryan Khan was arrested by the NCB.

Sail claimed that Gosavi had said Rs 8 crore of the deal money was to be given to NCB’s Mumbai zonal director Sameer Wankhede. Following Sail’s allegations, the NCB had ordered a vigilance inquiry against the anti-drugs agency officials and others. Wankhede had denied the allegations against him. Last month, a vigilance team led by Singh came to Mumbai to probe the allegations of extortion, but had then failed to record Sail’s statement.

ECS was instrumental in mobilising funds and the construction was initiated in convergence with PWD, RD, PHED, local MLAs, individuals and friends, while Hans Foundation supported almost 60% of the cost. The youth also helped in painting the bridge and many Churches came to help in constructing wooden culverts on the link road. A wooden bridge was also constructed on the link road and, after 17 months, a 70-feet tall bridge was constructed and a 10km link road completed.

The international rock competition is also a huge attraction for music fans from the region and other parts of India. There are many local entrepreneurs, qualified and experienced and who are running eateries, bakeries, catering and manufacturing food items. There are also scores of young sound engineers doing business besides videographers. It would therefore, be of immense help to the entrepreneurs if tenders are floated to for the of the deserving entrepreneurs.

Raising the bar on Nagaland’s annual...

According to the latest Reserve Bank data, the notes in circulation in value terms soared from Rs 17.74 lakh crore on November 4, 2016, to Rs 29.17 lakh crore on October 29, 2021. Highlighting benefits of demonetisation, sources said, it has increased the trend towards greater formalisation of the economy and towards increased digitisation of payments. Similarly, some of the reports pointed out that the number of counterfeit notes in the economy has decreased by 1.1 lakh between FY’19 to FY’21, thereby attaining another important goal of demonetisation. In view of the above, sources said, it is clear that demonetisation was primarily intended to remove black money and counterfeit notes from circulation and increase digitalisation with the ultimate aim to replace cash with digital payment systems.

sources said, the precautionary demand generated by the public during 2020-21 due to the COVID-19 pandemic induced uncertainties is also an important factor in currency demand. The current increase in Currency-in-Circulation (CiC) during 2020-21 has been 17.2 per cent in value terms, which is in line with past trends, when viewed in conjunction with the COVID-19 pandemic induced demand, sources said. The long-term average increase in CiC during the last 20 years has been 15 per cent. As a percentage of GDP, sources said, CiC has remained between 11-12 per cent during the last decade, but a combination of greater public demand for cash and a huge contraction in GDP, has led to an increase in CiC as a percentage of GDP, from 12 per cent during 2019-20 to 14.5 per cent during 2020-21.

transactions in value terms stood at over Rs 7.71 lakh crore or over USD 100 billion. A total of 421 crore transactions were done through UPI in October. Sources also pointed out that even in the US, total currency in circulation soared to USD 2.07 trillion by the end of 2020 - a 16 per cent gain from a year earlier, and was also the biggest oneyear percentage increase since 1945. Demand for liquidity always increases during periods of economic uncertainty and since cash is the most liquid form of asset, the increase in cash during the period of enormous uncertainty is expected, sources said, adding, the larger holding of cash in the pandemic year has been a world-wide phenomenon. Observing that demand for currency depends upon several macro-economic factors, including economic growth and level of interest rates,

NEW DELHI, NOV 9 (PTI): Uncertainties on account of COVID-19 pandemic have increased the demand for currency notes not only in India but across the globe, official sources said, dismissing the criticism that demonetisation has failed to reduce cash in the economy. Government sources said that growth of the digital payments system postdemonetisation will ultimately curb the dependence on cash. Official data points out a jump in digital payments through different modes, including plastic cards, net banking and Unified Payments Interface (UPI). UPI of the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) is fast emerging as a major medium of payment in the country. UPI was launched in 2016, and the transactions have been growing month-on-month barring a few blips. In October 2021, the

China delivers largest warship to Pak

NEW DELHI, NOV 9 (IANS): China has delivered to Pakistan the largest and most advanced warship that Beijing has ever exported, in a move that highlights the friendship between the two countries, The Global Times reported. Designed and built by China State Shipbuilding Corporation Limited (CSSC), the frigate was delivered to the Pakistan Navy in a commissioning ceremony in Shanghai, CSSC announced in a statement on Monday. The Type 054A/P frigate was named the PNS Tughril, The Global Times quoted a statement issued by the Pakistan Navy as saying. The PNS Tughril is the first hull of four Type 054 frigates being constructed for the Pakistan Navy, it said, noting that the ship is a technologically advanced and highly capable platform with enormous surface-to-

surface, surface-to-air and underwater firepower, besides extensive surveillance potentials. Being equipped with state-of-the-art combat management and an electronic warfare system along with modern self-defence capabilities, the Type 054A/P frigate can simultaneously execute a number of naval warfare missions in a highly intense multi-threat environ-

ment, the Pakistani statement said. The frigate is the largest and most advanced warship China has ever exported, the CSSC said. “The completion and the delivery of the vessel is another major achievement of China-Pakistan friendship, and will further enhance the all-weather strategic cooperative partnership between the two countries,” the Chinese shipbuilding

company said in the statement. Pakistani Ambassador to China Moin ul Haque said that the commissioning of the PNS Tughril ushers in a new chapter in PakistanChina friendship that has matured through the test of time and remained steadfast in all domains, according to the statement from the Pakistan Navy, the report said. In the context of the overall security paradigm of the region, Tughril-class frigates will strengthen Pakistan Navy’s capabilities to respond to maritime challenges to ensure seaward defence, maintain peace, stability and balance of power in the Indian Ocean region, the ambassador said, who also praised the concerted efforts made by China for the landmark achievement by the timely delivery of the well-equipped and potent frigate despite the global pandemic.

Israeli military downs alleged Hamas drone TEL AVIV, NOV 9 (IANS): The Israeli military announced that it had downed a drone “allegedly belonging to the Hamas militant organisation” which controls the Gaza Strip. Israel’s Iron Dome air defense system intercepted the unarmed aerial vehicle (UAV), which was downed off the coast of the Gaza Strip after being monitored, Xinhua news agency quoted the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) as saying in a statement late Monday. “The IDF will continue to protect Israel’s airspace and its civilians,” the statement added. Last week, the Israelo Defense Ministry announced it will deploy an advanced aerial surveillance balloon to boost its air defense capabilities.

Facebook whistleblower fears the metaverse BRUSSELS, NOV 9 (AP): Facebook whistleblower Frances Haugen said she fears the impact of the metaverse that the social media giant has rebranded to focus on delivering, saying the futuristic virtual reality world would force people to give up more of their personal information, be addicting and give the embattled company another monopoly in the online world. In an interview with The Associated Press on Tuesday as she makes a series of appearances before European lawmakers drawing up rules for social media companies, Haugen said her former employer

Frances Haugen

has rushed to prioritise the metaverse because “if you don’t like the conversation, you try to change the conversation”. “Facebook should have a transparency plan for the metaverse before they start building all this stuff, because they can hide behind a wall, they keep making unforced errors, they keep making things that prioritise their own profits

before safety,” she said. The metaverse is sort of the internet brought to life, or at least rendered in 3D. CEO Mark Zuckerberg has described it as a “virtual environment” you can go inside of — instead of just looking at on a screen — and refocused the company’s business model on the futuristic virtual reality world, including renaming the company Meta. People can meet, work and play, using virtual reality headsets, augmented reality glasses, smartphone apps or other devices. Haugen is a former product manager at Facebook turned whistleblower whose revelations about

the company’s practices have drawn global attention. Documents she has turned over to authorities and her testimony to lawmakers on both sides of the Atlantic have revealed deep-seated problems at the company and energised legislative and regulatory efforts around the world to crack down on big tech companies. She says the social media giant prioritises engagement and user growth over online safety. Haugen, who also provided a vast trove of redacted internal documents to a group of news organisations, alleges that Facebook’s systems amplify online hate and

extremism, fail to protect young people from harmful content and the company lacks any incentive to fix the problems. Haugen’s documents have exposed an internal crisis at the social media giant, which provides free services to 3 billion people. Zuckerberg has dismissed Haugen’s claims as a “coordinated effort” to paint a false picture of the company. Officials in Washington and European capitals are taking her claims seriously. European Union lawmakers questioned her intensely Monday, before applauding her at the end of the 2 1/2 hour hearing.

Israeli police arrest 65 Arabs over illegal arms dealing JERUSALEM, NOV 9 (AGENCIES): Israeli police have arrested 65 Israeli Arabs on suspicion of illegal arms dealing in what they say was the biggest ever operation of its kind, reports BBC. The suspects were primarily from northern Israel but also from the occupied West Bank and East Jerusalem. A former criminal recruited as an undercover agent bought dozens of weapons, including 25 M16 rifles, a machine gun and an anti-tank missile. The government has promised to tackle a deadly crime wave in the community. At least 106 Israeli Arabs, including women and children, have been murdered in the past year, according to a tally by the

Virus deaths in Russia rise MOSCOW, NOV 9 (AP): Coronavirus deaths in Russia hit a new record Tuesday and new confirmed cases remained high two days after a nine-day nonworking period ended in most of the country’s regions. The state coronavirus task force reported 1,211 COVID-19 deaths, the highest daily death toll in the pandemic, and 39,160 new cases. The task force has reported around 40,000 cases and over 1,100 deaths every day since late October. Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered many Russians last month to stay off work between Oct 30 and Nov 7.

The officer in charge of the overnight operation warned that illegal weapons dealing in the Arab community had “gone way out of proportion and become monstrous”. “ We d r i e d u p t h e swamp a little, but this is not enough,” Northern District Commander Shimon Lavi was quoted as saying by the

Haaretz newspaper. He expressed hope that the arrests would serve as a deterrent, but added that there was “a big demand for arms in the Arab community, partly because there is a lack of feeling of personal safety and easy access to weapons”. The operation was welcomed by Public Security Minister Omer Bar-Lev and Israeli Arab members of parliament.

the neighbourhood, the four took a spin around the space station, taking pictures. This was a first for SpaceX; NASA’s shuttles used to do it all the time before their retirement a decade ago. The last Russian capsule fly-around was three years ago. It wasn’t the most comfortable ride back. The toilet in their capsule was broken, and so the astronauts needed to rely on diapers for the eight-hour trip home. They shrugged it off late last week as just one more challenge in their mission. The first issue arose shortly after their April liftoff; Mission Control warned a piece of

space junk was threatening to collide with their capsule. It turned out to be a false alarm. Then in July, thrusters on a newly arrived Russian lab inadvertently fired and sent the station into a spin. The four astronauts took shelter in their docked SpaceX capsule, ready to make a hasty departure if necessary. Among the upbeat milestones: four spacewalks to enhance the station’s solar power, a movie-making visit by a Russian film crew and the first-ever space harvest of chile peppers. The next crew will also spend six months up there, welcoming back-to-back groups of tourists. A Japanese tycoon and his personal assistant will get a lift from the Russian Space Agency in December, followed by three businessmen arriving via SpaceX in February. SpaceX’s first privately chartered flight, in September, bypassed the space station. (AP)

our astronauts returned to Earth on Monday, riding home with SpaceX to end a 200day space station mission that began last spring. Their capsule parachuted into the Gulf of Mexico off the coast of Pensacola, Florida, in darkness. Recovery boats quickly moved in with spotlights. Their homecoming — coming just eight hours after leaving the International Space Station — paved the way for SpaceX’s launch of their four replacements as early as Wednesday night. The newcomers were scheduled to launch first, but NASA switched the order because of bad weather and an astronaut’s undisclosed medical condition. The welcoming duties will now fall to the lone American and two Russians left behind at the space station. Before Monday afternoon’s undocking, German astronaut Matthias Maurer, who’s waiting to launch at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center, tweeted it was a shame the two crews wouldn’t overlap at the space station but “we trust you’ll leave everything nice and tidy.” His will be SpaceX’s fourth crew flight for NASA in just 1 1/2 years. Ozukum also encouraged the players to be dedicated and disciplined while having the determination to

go beyond Loyem trophy or other local tournaments and try to excel and bring laurels to the state. “We have to respect and make football a culture amongst the Nagas and one day make Nagaland a nursery of football talents in India”, he added. With Virat Kohli relinquishing the T20I captaincy, the Chetan Sharma-led National Selection Committee appointed Rohit as the captain of the squad while KL Rahul is the designated vice-captain. This will also be the first assignment for the new head coach Rahul Dravid, who takes over the reins from Ravi Shastri. Many multi-format regulars including Kohli, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Shami, and Ravindra Jadeja have been given a break after the T20 World Cup, which followed the completion of the Indian Premier League 2021. Shreyas Iyer, Deepak Chahar, and Axar Patel, who were all part of the travelling reserves at the T20 World Cup, have been included in this squad, which also sees the return of Yuzvendra Chahal and Mohammed Siraj. Among those picked for their fantastic performances in IPL 2021 is Or-

ange Cap winner Gaikwad, who played two T20Is for India on the tour of Sri Lanka earlier this year. Meanwhile, Avesh, Venkatesh and Harshal, were part of the India bubble at the World Cup and helped assist the team in its preparations. India will look to start building towards the next T20 World Cup in Australia after a disap-

pointing performance in the UAE which saw them losing their opening two games to Pakistan and New Zealand. Despite winning their last three games handsomely, India failed to qualify for the semi-finals. The three T20Is will be played in Jaipur (November 17), Ranchi (Nov 19), and Kolkata (Nov 21). The squad for the two subsequent Tests, at Kanpur

(Nov 25-29) and Mumbai (December 3-7), will be announced later. The selection committee also picked the India ‘A’ squad for the South Africa tour with J&K fast bowler Umran Malik and Karnataka opener Devdutt Padikkal finding a place. President’s Cup: Indian shooters bag five medals, Rahi wins silver on final day NEW DELHI, NOV 9 (IANS): Indian shooter Rahi Sarnobat clinched silver medal in women’s 25m pistol at ISSF Presidents Cup, which ended in the Polish city of Wroclaw, on Tuesday. That effort along with Manu Bhaker’s second gold, which she won on the final day partnering Turkey’s Ozgur Varlik in the 25m Rapid Fire pistol Mixed Team competition, meant that the Indians won a total of five medals in the prestigious year ending event. Manu had earlier partnered Iran’s Javad Foroughi to clinch the 10m Air Pistol Mixed Team title, on day two of competitions. The seasoned Rahi Sarnobat, who has quite the reputation as a strong finals shooter, was in her elements again on Tuesday in the women’s 25m pistol final. She shot 3s and 4s consistently to climb from fifth place initially to second after the fifth five-shot series. She maintained that position from there on and was three points behind the gold-winning German Doreen Veenekamp, going into the 10th and final series. She managed two hits to the German’s one to end

Rahi Sarnobat

with 31 -- just two behind Veenekamp. It was a classy field featuring Rio Olympic champion Anna Korakaki of Greece and Tokyo 2020 bronze medallist Xiao Jiaruixuan of China among others. Manu Bhaker, the second Indian in this field finished sixth with a score of 17. But Manu was not to be denied on the day, as she came back later to partner Turkey’s Varlik and win the 25m Rapid Fire pistol Mixed Team event by a margin of 9-7 over the Chinese/Estonian pair of

Xiao and Peeter Olesk. The Indo-Turkish pair opened up a healthy lead of 6-2 in the early stages but Xiao and Peeter fought back to level the match at 6-6. Manu and Ozgur then went ahead 8-6 before tying the final series at 5-5 to earn the crucial ninth point and seal the deal. Besides Manu’s two gold medals and Rahi’s silver on the final day, Saurabh Chaudhary also won an individual silver and Abhishek Verma, an individual bronze, in the Men’s 10m Air Pistol competition.

Newcastle confirm India’s paddlers Reeth, Manush win in Ecuador Curry puts up 50 in Warriors’ win Eddie Howe as new

Reeth Tennison

M U M BA I , N OV 9 (IANS): Reeth Tennison and Manush Shah bagged the women’s and men’s singles titles respectively as India completed a grand double in the ITTF Ecuador International Open 2021 played at Cuenca, Ecuador, on Sunday. Reeth clinched the gold medal by defeating compatriot Ankita Das 4-2 in the women’s singles final while Manush Shah defeated Juan Jesus Gomez of Mexico 4-1 in the m’n’s singles final. India also won silver medals in men’s and women’s doubles in a successful outing for the squad in Ecuador. In the women’s singles final, the 26-year-old Reeth, a Mumbai-based

Manush Shah

TSTTA player, was engaged in a close tussle for Supremacy with 28-yearold Ankita, who started on a positive note by winning the opening game at the Complejo Deportivo Totoracocha, Cuenca. But, Reeth showed plenty of determination and fought back strongly to win the second and third games to take a slender 2-1 lead, according to information received here. Ankita drew level by snatching a tense fourth game in extra points before Reeth once again found her attacking form and knocked the fight out of her teammate Ankita by winning the next two games, thus wrapping up the contest with a 6-11,

11-4, 11-6, 16-18, 11-1 and 11-6 win. India completed a grand double when Manush Shah defeated Juan Jesus Gomez of Mexico 4-1 in the men’s singles final. The 20-year-old Gujarat paddler Manush was in control as he dictated the rallies against his 18-yearold Mexican rival and went on to close out the match with a creditable 11-7, 11-9, 11-13, 11-7, and 11-9 victory and claimed the country’s second gold medal. However, Reeth and Shah were both denied from adding another gold medal to their kitty. The Indian pair of Reeth and Ankita suffered a 1-3 (4-11, 11-6, 7-11, 13-15) defeat at the hands of the Mexican duo of Clio Barce-

nas Arantxa Cossio in the women’s doubles final. Later, in the men’s doubles summit clash, Shah along with Sanil Shetty were unable to combine effectively and went down fighting to the Mexican combination of Juan Jesus Gomez and Dario Acre in a 5-game thriller. Juan and Dario held their nerves to carve out a deserving 3-2 (11-7, 4-11, 3-11, 11-9, and 11-8) victory. Earlier in the women’s singles penultimate round encounters, Reeth brushed aside Ecuador’s 20-year-old challenger Nathaly Paredes 4-1 (11-5, 11-8, 8-11, 11-7, 11-4) and Ankita blanked Mexico’s 19-year-old Clio Barcenas 4-0 (13-11, 11-2, 11-6, 13-11). In the men’s singles semi-finals, Shah encountered a strong challenge from Mexico’s 19-year-old Dario Arce and was taken the distance before he managed to pull through by a tight 4-3 (11-6, 9-11, 9-11, 11-9, 11-4, 11-13 and 113) scores, while Juan also faced tough fight from Ecuador’s 27-year-old Rodrigo Tapia before snatching a hard-fought 4-3 (7-11, 14-12, 8-11, 11-8, 6-11, 1311 and 11-9) verdict.

SAN FRANCISCO, NOV 9 (AGENCIES): Stephen Curry scored 18 of his NBA season-high 50 points in a third-quarter flurry Monday night that rallied the Warriors past the Atlanta Hawks 127-113 in San Francisco, Golden State’s fifth straight win. Curry, who had been held to 20 or fewer points in four consecutive games, finished 14-for-28 from the field, 9-for-19 on 3-point attempts and 13-for-13 at the foul line. He also found time for 10 assists, giving him the first double-double in a 50-point game of his career. Trae Young scored 28 points and John Collins added 19 for the Hawks, who lost their fourth game in a row. Lakers 126, Hornets 123 (OT) Anthony Davis scored six of his 32 points in overtime and added 12 rebounds as Los Angeles ended a two-game losing streak with an overtime victory against visiting

LO N D O N, N OV 9 (IANS): Newcastle United have confirmed former Bournemouth coach Eddie Howe as the long-term replacement for Steve Bruce, who was sacked in October in the wake of the Saudi Arabian-backed takeover of the club. Howe’s appointment had been an open secret after he was seen in the directors’ box watching the club’s 1-1 draw away to Brighton on Saturday evening (November 6). “It is a great honour to become head coach of a club with the stature and history of Newcastle United,” said Howe, who has not worked since stepping down as Bournemouth coach in the wake of their relegation from the Premier League in 2020. He has signed a contract to keep him at St James’ Park until the end of June 2024. “This is a wonderful opportunity, but there is also a lot of work ahead of us and I am eager to get onto the training ground to start working with the players.”

Standing to be allowed at Premier Tripura set to score big with bamboo-made cricket bats League matches for first time in 30 yrs

LONDON, NOV 9 (IANS): Standing at Premier League matches in England, banned following the country’s worst-ever tragedy, is to be allowed for the first time in nearly 30 years, it was announced. The match between Chelsea and Liverpool on January 2 will be the first to allow fans to stand during the match. Standing on the main terraces of matches in Britain was a key feature of the games until 97 Liverpool fans were crushed to death at the Hillsborough Stadium in 1989. Since then, top-flight clubs

have been ordered to introduce all-seater stadiums. Manchester United, Manchester City, Tottenham and Chelsea and Championship side Cardiff have, like Chelsea, also had their applications to be part of a safe standing trial approved. In a statement on Monday night, Chelsea FC said its application to be an early adopter of licensed safe standing from January 1, 2022 has been approved by the Sports Grounds Safety Authority (SGSA) and the Government Sports Minister, Xinhua reports. “This is a historic change

of policy to allow standing in topflight football grounds in England and Wales for the first time in nearly 30 years,” read a statement released by the club. “The introduction of licensed standing areas is based on evidence of a safety risk for fans who persistently stand in seated areas. In addition, many fans want the choice to stand and, with the advent of new engineering solutions, research has shown this can be managed safely.” Chelsea FC has already installed rail seating to areas at Stamford Bridge to facilitate safe standing. “We are very pleased that we have been approved to operate licensed safe standing areas and that our club will be an early adopter of this historic change in policy,” said Chelsea CEO Guy Laurence. Sports Minister Nigel Huddleston said fans deserve different options on how they can enjoy a live match and “I will be watching the progress of these trials with interest.”

AGARTALA, NOV 9 (PTI): Tripura has emerged as the front-runner in manufacturing cricket bats made of bamboo, which, some experts believe, is a more sustainable option than the traditional willows. With the new alternative having caught the fancy of the cricketing world, the northeastern state, which grows the grass in abundance, is planning to cash in on the opportunity with bamboo bats manufactured indigenously, by means of a unique glue-board technology. A research institute in Agartala, which is a part of the Centre-affiliated Bamboo and Cane Development Institute (BCDI), has recently made bamboo bats, taking a cue from a study conducted by scientists at the University of Cambridge, and presented samples to H G Cricket Company in Meerut and Virender Sehwag Cricket Academy in Delhi. Arun Sharma, the director of the Agartala-based North East Centre for Technology Application and Research

(NECTAR), along with a team of BCDI officials, also met Tripura Chief Minister Biplab Deb to showcase the product the institute has manufactured. Deb took to Twitter and said, “Greetings to BCDI & NECTAR team for providing a platform to #Tripura’s artisans, for creating cricket bats, & cookies made from #Bamboo. Such initiatives will further our efforts to achieve PM Shri Narendra Modi Ji’s vision of optimising the #GreenGold for #AatmanirbharBharat.” According to Sharma, the

Meerut firm has also maintained that bamboo bats are better than willow plates in more ways than one. “We manufactured the bat in Tripura as bamboo grows in abundance in this region. If these bats could capture the domestic market, the economy of the region would receive a boost and the local artisans would be immensely benefitted. “The process to manufacture these bats involves crushing of bamboo slices, mixing the crushed bamboo with glue

and some other materials to form a block, which then is given the shape of a cricket bat,” he told PTI. The new bat is stiffer, heavier, and has a bigger sweet spot, Sharma claimed It is 38% superior to willow bat, which has no uniform density, he explained. The sweet spot is the point on a cricket bat from where the ball receives maximum acceleration. “The stumps, too, could be made from a special variety of bamboo called kanak kaich, which has a hollow lumen inside. It won’t be difficult to make stumps,” Sharma added. Secretary of Cricket Association of Tripura Timir Chanda, when contacted, said the bamboo bat concept “sounds good” but it would not be right to make a comment as “I have never quite seen it”. According to the laws of the cricket, bats need to be solely made of wood. Therefore, in order for bats manufactured from bamboo to get international acceptance, regulations will have to be amended.
