NPFLP, SH call for total lockdown

D imapu r , M ay 1 0 (NPN): Close on the heels of the report carried by Nagaland Post on May 10, where voices from health workers said a lockdown for a limited period was necessary to break the transmission chain of rise in number of new Covid cases including death; both the NPF Legislature Party and Sumi Hoho (SH) have called for imposition of lockdown with varying degrees. While NPFLP had proposed for total lockdown for Dimapur and Kohima districts in view of “indifferent” attitude of public for Covid protocols; the Sumi Hoho, has called for imposition of State-wide total lockdown to break the chain of community spread of Covid-19. It was also reported that the matter was not discussed in a recent cabinet meeting as lockdown consideration was shot off by senior leaders. It may be noted that the state government had declared municipal areas under Kohima and Dimapur including nearby areas as containment areas with the objective of breaking the transmission of the virus.

H&FW appeals travellers, and Covid patients D I M A P U R , M AY 1 0 (NPN): Health & family welfare (H&FW) department has cautioned that any person testing positive for Covid-19 or found to be a close contact but not cooperating with the surveillance teams or not providing information or providing wrong/false information or found withholding information for the purpose of contact tracing or any person traced as close contact but refusing Covid-19 testing or indulging in any practices endangering the community would be liable for punishment as per provision of the Epidemic Disease Act, 1897 and other relevant provision of the laws. Observing that some people who already tested positive were seen running from one laboratory to another for a “retest/ confirmation” endangering the community in the process, Dr Imkongtemsu Longchar, deputy director of IEC bureau, Health & Family Welfare directorate, asserted that a positive by any Covid-19 test (RT-PCR, Truenat and RAT) was a 100% confirmed positive anywhere in the world. NPFLP through its spokesperson Imkong L. Imchen maintained that lockdown for Kohima and Dimapur was the only option left to protect the people in these two districts while adding that it should be as a last resort. NPFLP said it observed that the state government seemed to have learnt nothing from the first wave faced by all last year. NPFLP said the plea by the state government that other developed nations and Indian States were also finding it difficult to contain the virus, should no longer be parroted by the government to hide its own inefficiency. Stating the present situation as a “grim state of affairs in the State”, NPFLP expressed fear that people would soon be faced with a huge challenge to even provide basic amenities for Covid-19 patients. The party cited the instance at Dimapur, which has highest Covid cases but the two designated Covid hospitals were insufficient to meet the demand for beds with uninterrupted oxygen supply for patients who require hospitalisation. NPFLP wondered what could be the

NPF Legislature Party slams govt on Covid unpreparedness NPF Legislature Party (NPFLP) has hit out at the PDA government for mishandling and unpreparedness to tackle the Covid-19 crisis in the State. In a statement, NPFLP spokesperson Imkong L Imchenhas called upon the state government to ramp up the required infrastructure in all district designated Covid hospitals, emphasising that a government was for good functioning and well-being of the people and not otherwise. Recalling that governor RN Ravi, taking cognisance of the severity of the second wave, had convened a meeting of all political parties on April 21 during which leader of opposition TR Zeliang had pointed out that the second wave or third wave would not emanate

from within the State but rather from those entering in unmonitored from other States, NPFLP said it was therefore suggested that all inter-State entry points, railway station and airport should be well equipped to manage the incoming passengers while also insisting on Covid negative reports for entry into the State. Appreciating the efforts of the Central government in providing equipment for setting up of oxygen generating plants in the state and Indian Air Force for assisting in lifting it to the State, the party hoped that the supply of oxygen would be greatly augmented once these plants were set up. But, itsuggested designating more hospitals for taking care of Covid patients and also improving the infrastructure at a

greater pace. Though the Central government was magnanimously sanctioning funds in the name of Covid, the party alleged that there was still no significant improvement in the healthcare facilities in the State. It accused the State government of showing enthusiasm only in attaining more personal wealth by siphoning off and withdrawing funds from the State exchequer in the guise of additional funds for development, thus rapidly increasing the burden of fiscal deficit. During such trying times, NPFLP said the government should be more proactive in tending to the needs and listen to their cries rather than amassing (Cont’d on p-6) wealth.

India records over 3.66L fresh cases

PTI: After recording over four lakh fresh cases for four consecutive days, India witnessed a single-day rise of 3,66,161 COVID-19 cases on Monday, which pushed its tally to 2,26,62,575, according to the health ministry. The death toll due to the viral disease climbed to 2,46,116 with 3,754 more people succumbing to it, the ministry’s data updated at 8 am showed. The num-

ber of active cases of the coronavirus infection in the country has gone up to 37,45,237, accounting for 16.53 per cent of its total caseload, while the national COVID-19 recovery rate was recorded at 82.39%. The number of people who have recuperated from the disease has climbed to 1,86,71,222, while the case fatality rate was recorded at 1.09%

Petrol, diesel prices hiked again D I M A P U R , M AY 1 0 (NPN): After remaining unchanged for two consecutive days, oil manufacturing companies (OMCs) on Monday hiked petrol and diesel prices by 26 paise and 32 paise a litre respectively. After Monday’s rate revision, petrol price in Dimapur rose to Rs.90.38

per litre while diesel price climbed to Rs.84.15 per litre. In Kohima, a litre of petrol cost Rs.91.33 and diesel was priced at Rs.84.91 per litre. Across the country as well the petrol and diesel price increased on Monday but its quantum varied depending on the level of local levies in respective states.

Covid mutation in India ‘variant of concern’, says WHO GENEVA, MAY 10 (AFP): A Covid-19 variant spreading in India, which is facing an explosive outbreak, appears to be more contagious and has been classified as being “of concern”, the World Health Organization said Monday. The UN health agency said the B.1.617 variant of Covid-19 first found in India last October seemed to be transmitting more easily than the original version of the virus, and might possibly have some increased resistance to vaccine protections. “There is some available information to suggest increased transmissibility

of the B.1.617,” Maria Van Kerkove, the WHO’s lead on Covid-19, told reporters, also pointing to early studies “suggesting that there is some reduced neutralisation”. “As such we are classifying this as a variant of concern at the global level,” she said, adding that more details would be provided in the WHO’s weekly epidemiological update on Tuesday. The devastating wave has overwhelmed India’s healthcare system, and experts have said official figures for cases and fatalities are much lower than the actual numbers. It has for some time been

feared that B.1.617-- which counts several sub-lineages with slightly different mutations and characteristics — might be contributing to the alarming spread. But until now, WHO has listed it merely as a “variant of interest”. Now it will be added to the list containing three other variants of Covid-19 — those first detected in Britain, Brazil and South Africa — which the WHO has classified as being “of concern”. They are seen as more dangerous than the original version of the virus by being more transmissible, deadly or able to get past vaccine protections.

Indian mutant more contagious: Dr Soumya

WHO chief scientist Dr Soumya Swaminathan on Monday said a prelim data has showed that Indian variant is more contagious and transmissible, adding that there is heterogeneity in the country in terms of spread of the infection. Urging people to get the vaccines, she said inoculation is important as it will reduce the severity Dr S Swaminathan of coronavirus. In a exclusive interview to CNBC-TV18, Swaminathan said that the double mutation strain consists of variants found in Brazil and South Africa and it evades body’s immune response. “Surge in India increases chances of more dangerous variants emerging. WHO is concerned about number of cases and deaths in India. Globally, cases and deaths have plateaued, not in South Asia. South East Asia is seeing case rise owing to India. Overall numbers hide what is going on, need to go deeper in state, local level data,” she said.

was not aware of the development, clarifying there was no such order for closure of shops except the previous one that allowed shops to remain open between 6 a.m. and 2 p.m. The DC guessed that

the shopkeepers might have decided to close their shops as a preventive measure since there was a surge of Covid-19 positive cases even among the shopkeepers and street vendors. Asked whether District Task Force (DTF), Kohima would recommend total lockdown in the district, Thejawelie said this would be known only after the containment period got over. He explained that after the containment period ends on May 12, DTF would hold a meeting to analyse the situation and then submit recommendations/ report to the State government of the past seven days, after which the government would take a decision.

Covid-19 situation in Assam alarming: Sarma GUWAHATI, MAY 10 (AGENCIES): Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Monday expressed serious concern that the Covid-19 situation in the State was “alarming”. “COVID situation in Assam is alarming. We have seen that our daily cases have crossed almost 5000. Tomorrow when we meet for the first time in the cabinet, we will discuss

Covid situation from all perspectives and we will take all measures required to contain Covid outbreak,” Sarma told media persons after being sworn in as the new Assam chief minister. Sarma, who is also the NEDA convenor, added that unless the situation in Assam is brought under control, the situation in the North East as a whole cannot be brought under control.

‘Covid likely spreading faster in Assam’ AP adds: With experts saying the Covid is likely spreading in Assam faster than anywhere else in the country, authorities are preparing for a surge in infections by converting a massive stadium and a university into hospitals. Cases in Assam started ticking upward a month ago and the official seven-day average of daily cases in the state on May 9 stood at over 4,700 cases. But a model run by the University of Michigan– which predicts the cur-

rent spread of cases before they are actually detected– says infections in Assam are likely occurring as fast as any other place in India. Add to that recent elections in the state– and the huge political rallies that accompanied them– and experts fear an uncontrolled surge is on the horizon. Officials in Assam were racing to prepare for a virus surge because similar onslaughts have overwhelmed hospitals in much richer Indian (Cont’d on p-3) states. K Y M C

Japan, UNDP to provide oxygen plants to NE states oxygen generation plants in the States of Meghalaya, Nagaland and Tripura in the North Eastern Region of India. The hospitals, with a capacity of approximately 1,300 beds in total, have been identified in the region for these oxygen generation plants. Excess oxygen will be distributed among other health facilities in the hospitals’ vicinity. The installation sites are being prepared so that the oxygen production can start at the earliest possible. “Japan stands with India, our friend and partner, in her efforts to fight against Covid-19 pandemic in this critical time. I am pleased that Japan is working with UNDP to provide vital oxygen generation plants for the people of India’s North East. India’s North East occupies a special place for Japan-India relations and I sincerely hope that the Oxygen generation plants will help those people in need in the North Eastern Region of India”, shared by His Excellency Mr. Satoshi Suzuki, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Japan to the

Republic of India. “I would like to thank the people of Japan for this critical support that will allow UNDP to ensure uninterrupted flow of oxygen in hospitals and health centres in the region, especially those in hard-toreach areas. The situation in India is devastating and the pandemic continues to threaten millions of lives. UNDP urgently needs additional support to ensure that we reach the last mile to leave no one behind,” mentioned by Ms. Shoko Noda, Resident Representative, UNDP India. In addition to this, UNDP has also been supporting the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare with digitization of supply chain of vaccines and tracking beneficiaries across states to ensure better access and coverage. It has also helped build capacities of 820,500 frontline workers across the country to support the ‘world’s largest vaccination drive’. The Government of Japan has also committed a sizable commitment of providing critical items to India, including ventilators and oxygen concentrators.

409 new Covid cases, 5 more deaths in M’laya

NEW DELHI, MAY 10 (AGENCIES): As the second wave of pandemic continues to spread in India at an unprecedented pace, the Government of Japan and United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) India have partnered to provide oxygen generation plants to the North Eastern Region in India. Since June last year, the Government of Japan and UNDP India have been jointly supporting the Government of India’s response to the Covid-19 pandemic through strengthening of health and social protection systems and reviving livelihoods to address the devastating impacts on the lives of the most vulnerable population. In the context of the ongoing pandemic overwhelming the health system across the country, one of the key challenges has been the acute shortage of medical oxygen. In light of the critical need to ensure uninterrupted oxygen supply, the support from the people of Japan has enabled UNDP in procuring and installing eight Pressure Swing Absorption (PSA)

Arms, ammunition and other items seized.

I M P H A L , M AY 1 0 (AGENCIES): In a major operation, joint team of Assam Rifles of Mantripukhri Battalion under the aegis of HQ IGAR (South) and Manipur police seized a huge cache of arms and ammunition and other warlike stores from Samurou of Imphal West district on Sunday. The operation was

carried out based on specific input during which the team setup mobile vehicles check post in Samurou. The recovered items include four pistols, PEK plastic explosives, rounds of various rifles and three radio sets. The seized items and warlike stores were handed to Wangoi police station for further legal action.

SHILLONG, MAY 10: Meghalaya recorded 409 new Covid infections on Monday, with a positivity rate of 15.21 per cent and pushing the number of active cases to 3062, while the death toll mounted to 233 with five more fatalities, health officials said. “We are now seeing cases across the state. The situation is grim. We are therefore advising people to stay indoors. Homes are the safest place,” Director Health Services (MI), Dr. Aman War told reporters on Monday. Meanwhile, four Covid-19 related deaths were registered in East Khasi Hills district and one death in Ri-Bhoi district, while East Khasi Hills district recorded the highest positive cases of 202 in the State.

‘Covid likely spreading faster in Assam’ (From p-1) “We are adding 1,000 beds a week to prepare ourselves in the event of cases spiralling,” said Dr Lakshmanan S, director of the National Health Mission in Assam. The state’s largest government-run hospital, the Guwahati Medical College Hospital, has more than doubled its number of intensive care beds to 220 and health officials are building space for another 200 in the hospital’s parking lot. A football and cricket stadium is being converted into a 430-bed COVID hospital. The private Royal Global University in the

main city of Guwahati has been converted into a 1,000bed hospital. There are 2,100 beds reserved in government centres for COVID-19 patients in Guwahati, with hundreds more planned. This is in addition to the existing 750 beds for patients at private hospitals in the state. Even as infections increased, vaccination rates have fallen in Assam and other states in the region since India expanded its coverage to include all adults on May 1. Adding to concerns is the confirmation that the virus has started spreading into more remote Himala-

yan villages with poor health infrastructure. These areas are home to Indigenous tribes, who already face some of the lowest access to healthcare in the nation. The region had been largely untouched by the virus but it now appears the virus was spreading in remote villages without people knowing until it was too late. The lack of awareness, resources and the remoteness of these villages is complicating contact tracing in such areas, said Dr Mite Linggi, the medical superintendent at the district hospital at Roing in Arunachal Pradesh state.

Meghalaya CM has to Himanta was sure of becoming CM quarantine: Health Min even in his college days, says wife Rinki Correspondent SHILLONG, MAY 10: Meghalaya Health and Family Welfare Minister, Alexander Laloo Hek on Monday said chief minister Conrad K Sangma, who had visited Guwahati for the swearing-in ceremony of Assam Chief Minister, Himanta Biswa Sarma, would have to get tested and stay in quarantine after his return to the State Capital. The Chief Minister, who has been fully vaccinated against Covid-19, cited revised protocols for entry, under which he and others who are vaccinated, except those coming from

COVID-19 hot-spot states are exempted from any test. Sangma was scheduled to hold a cabinet meeting this evening, but cancelled the meeting and rushed to Guwahati to attend the swearing in ceremony. The Cabinet meeting would be convened on Tuesday. “Anyone who comes from outside the state has to undergo RT-PCR test and would also have to mandatorily be under quarantine as per the health department’s guidelines,” Hek told after inspecting the COVID-19 treatment facilities at the Shillong Civil Hospital here.

3.7 magnitude earthquake hits Nagaon, second tremor in a day GUWAHATI, MAY 10 (AGENCIES): An earthquake of magnitude 3.0 on the Richter scale hit Nagaon in Assam early on Monday, around 7 a.m., said the National Centre for Seismology (NCS). “Earthquake of Magnitude:3.0, Occurred on 10-05-2021, 07:05:52 IST, Lat: 26.49 & Long: 92.46, Depth: 23 Km , Location: Nagaon, Assam,” the NCS tweeted informing about the earthquake in the morning in Nagaon. (PTI) GUWAHATI, MAY 10 (PTI): “Tell your mother, I will be the chief minister one day”, Assam’s new chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma had told a young Riniki Bhuyan, who became his wife later, when he himself was a student of Cotton College here. He was completely focused even in his student days, and very sure of what he wanted to do in the future, the chief ministers wife told reporters after the swearing-in of her spouse as the 15th chief minister of Assam. “He was 22 and I was

17 when we first met and I had asked him what I would tell my mother about his future. He had replied- tell her that I will become the chief minister of Assam,” she said. The young girl was stunned but later realised that the man she would marry had definite goals, and dreams for the state, and rock-solid determination. “We got married when he was an MLA, then he became a minister and it has been politics all the way but when I was watching him take the oath as chief minister today, I could not

believe it,” she said “Even last night during our conversation he mentioned ‘Chief Minister designate’ and when I asked him ‘kun’(who), he replied ‘moi’(I am). It is always Himanta for me and I cannot relate to him as the chief minister. It will take time for me to come to terms with it,” she said with a smile. Riniki Bhuyan Sarma was all praise for her 52-yearold husband in the manner he tackled the Covid-19 pandemic in the state and “though it is far from over, he is trying to sincerely deal with the challenge”. He has a vision of an ideal Assam in his mind and works hard to achieve his goals even when there are several challenges along the way, the chief minister’s wife said. “We know that as a person in public life, he will face many challenges but I am confident he will resolve the issues as he is a person who thinks both with his heart and mind,” she said. Sarma’s wife is a media entrepreneur and the couple has two children-19-yearold Nandil Biswa Sarma and 17-year- old Sukanya Sarma.

Organisations condemn May 6 incident DIMAPUR: Various organizations have condemned the assault incident that took place on May 6 in Chümoukedima area. USLP: United Sangtam Likhüm Pümji (USLP) said it strongly condemned the unwarranted assault on Lotsangkhyong Alex and his brother by Chümoukedima Village Youth Society (CVYS) on May 6 night at their office premise in the presence of their father. In a press note, USLP president T. Seopi Sangtam and general secretary P. Achumse Sangtam said retrogression exhibited by the youth society was reprehensible in a civilized society. “Using violence and coercion to intimidate fellow citizens into submission cannot be a new normal,” it added. USLP said it took umbrage of the youth society “to terrorize and dehumanise fellow brothers’ in front of the victim’s father even after repeated plea for mercy to spare his children...” It said that when youths across the society were immensely contributing towards the advancement of society, hooliganism propagated by renegade youths has severely dented the goodwill between the fellow citizens. USLP called upon the competent authority and law enforcing agency to pursue the matter vigorously and to thoroughly investigate the matter so

that such incident should not be allowed to manifest again in future. It said that all perpetrators should be booked without any fear or favour to serve the end of justice. PYSP: Phelungre Yangdong Suro Pümji (PYSP) strongly condemn the alleged assault meted out on one Lotsangkhyong Alex and his brother, sons of John Tsülise Sangtam, secretary NPSC on May 6 evening by the some youths of Chümoukedima village. In a statement PYSP president Kyosukyu Sangtam and general secretary Benjungtemsu Sangtam said that such “barbaric act of mob attack on youngsters for no reason”, allegedly in the village youth official hall was unspeakable in this modern age of Christianity. PYSP said it took serious note of such act on bonafide members of the union and urged the authority concern that “no organization should be given the freedom to take the law into their own hand and attack people randomly for no valid reason”. The union fur ther urged the Chümoukedima Village Council to take immediate and proper action at before the situation aggravates and goes out of hand. P&LVJC: Phelungre and Lihtsaoung Village Joint Councils (P&LVJC) has condemned the assault on Alex Lotsangkhyong and Charles Kholi.

P&LVJC chairman Tongpise Sangtam and secretary T Muricho Sangtam termed the incident as uncalled for in the present Naga society and also condemned the alleged verbal abuse saying it was “open threat not only to a Sangtam citizen but also to minor tribes residing in Chumukidima area.” P&LVJC said it also opposed the alleged “forced signing of the undertaking” under duress, in order to release Alex Lotsangkhyong. The councils said that it will not stop or keep quite till justice was meted out to the victim. KASU: Kiphire Area Students Union (KASU) has also condemned the brutal attack in which a member KASU, Alex Lotsangkhyong and his brother was assaulted while the duo went to purchase drinking water. KASU president Trongdiba C. Sangtam and general secretary Tarsesh said the intent and barbarity was shocking against innocent civilians. While urging every citizen to condemn the incident, KASU said it was difficult to imagine such cruelty in democratic society, which flouts the rule of law and all norms of civilised conduct. KASU expressed confidence that the law enforcing agency will swiftly conduct a thorough investigation and book the perpetrators under appropriate sections of law to deliver

justice. DENSU: Dimapur Eastern Nagaland Students’ Union (DENSU) said it condemned the “ferocious act of Chümoukedima Village Youth Society” against a minor boy and his family on May 6 at Chümoukedima, Dimapur. DENSU through its media cell state that in a society no individual has the right to take law into their own hands and more specifically before ascertaining the facts of the case. DENSU alleged that the stand taken by CVYS even after the Chümoukedima Village Council (CVC) had admitted and conveyed its regret for the assault on minor, was “extremely unacceptable and preposterous”. It said that the CVYS justifying on the “so called undertaking” was nothing but a mockery to the statement issued by the CVC. DENSU said it also condemned the so “called amicable settlement/undertaking”. It said that signatures of the victims which were appended in the custody of CVYS, allegedly by applying force, was nothing but signatures given under duress as nothing could be read or seen in the so called undertaking letter; no condition, no reason and no point of agreement whatsoever. DENSU alleged that it was clear that the manner in which the undertaking was signed in a hasty man-

ner was to hush up the incident. DENSU reminded that “offices are established for ink and papers and not for kick, punch or to land some blows.” “...One cannot expect such ill act and standpoint from a society as CVYS,” it added. DENSU further mentioned that Chümoukedima was within the administrative jurisdiction of Dimapur district and “with second wave of the Covi19” it was a clear standing order from DC’s office of night curfew from 6 p.m. till 5 a.m., adding that CVYS was not exempted from the said order. DENSU also stated that “summoning a minor and family to their office at night and assembling crowd” was a clear violation of DC’s standing order, and therefore said the officials and volunteers of CVYS should be liable to be booked for the same. Stating that it regarded every society, association irrespective of Nagas or non-Nagas, DENSU however said it will “not tolerate any ill treatment/ elements in our society or against our people.” “Remember that we are all nagas irrespective of community or demarcations and remember that we are under the same sun, breathing the same air,” it said and maintained that “there can be no justice with amicable settlement and no amicable settlement without consent.”

India’s covid preparedness

I

ndia on May 8 for the first time, registered more than 4,077 Covid-19 deaths in just 24 hours, and continued to maintain the 4 lakh infection graph when 403,405 new infections were recorded on the day. Such numbers have consistently remained above the 3000- mark each day reflects the tragedy that has befallen India during the past few months. Most of the deaths arose when hospitals could not admit covid patients due to lack of beds and even those admitted to hospitals could not be administered oxygen. The second wave was expected even as early as September 2020 when eminent health specialists had sounded warnings. However, the Centre, had practically ‘centralised’ all powers through various ordinances such as Disaster Management Act and Epidemic Diseases Act 1897 in tandem to tackle the coronavirus outbreak. These have practically rendered the BJP’s promise of “minimum government and maximum governance” to mere political rhetoric. Under the DMA, the Union home secretary, who is the chairman of the National Executive Committee, has powers to decide on enhancing the preparedness and containment of COVID-19. Even the Election Commission of India is to coordinate its activities under the ambit. There is no doubt that the Centre has been found wanting in the run up to the recent uncontrollable spike in the COVID-19 infections across the country because of the second wave. When covid cases were dropping down from November 2020 to February 2021, the Centre had ‘centralised’ credit but when the second deadly wave hit the nation, it decided to ‘decentralise’ responsibility to the state and local leadership. However, this is not to say that state governments have acquitted themselves well in taking independent action. What is of serious concern is the findings that a COVID-19 variant spreading in India is more contagious and may be dodging vaccine protections, contributing to the country’s explosive outbreak. This was revealed by the World Health Organization’s chief scientist Soumya Swaminathan, a paediatrician and clinical scientist. Soumya said the B.1.617 variant of Covid-19, which was first detected in October 2020, was clearly a contributing factor to the catastrophe unfolding in India. According to Soumya, the B 1.617 is likely to be a variant of concern because it has some mutations which increase transmission, and which also potentially could make (it) resistant to antibodies that are generated by vaccination or by natural infection. Vaccinations in India have almost come to a grinding halt with many states complaining of shortage of vaccines. Soumya also revealed as the virus is replicating and spreading and transmitting at a faster and deadlier rate. She said chances are that the mutations will develop and adapt since the variants, which accumulate a lot of mutations may ultimately become resistant to the current vaccines available. She painted a gloomy scenario that if that is to happen that it will certainly be a problem for the whole world. While there are some within the medical fraternity who do not foresee any such scenario mainly since they firmly hold the opinion that with around 4 lakh daily covid cases, India could likely achieve herd immunity. However, new reports of third wave of the coronavirus that is likely to hit India probably solidifies the warnings issued by various scientists and which the Centre needs to provide needed funds to strengthen health infrastructure across the nation.

DailyDevotion Take the Initiative

…add to your faith virtue… —2 Peter 1:5

Add means that we have to do something. We are in danger of forgetting that we cannot do what God does, and that God will not do what we can do. We cannot save nor sanctify ourselves— God does that. But God will not give us good habits or character, and He will not force us to walk correctly before Him. We have to do all that ourselves. We must “work out” our “own salvation” which God has worked in us (Philippians 2:12). Add means that we must get into the habit of doing things, and in the initial stages that is difficult. To take the initiative is to make a beginning— to instruct yourself in the way you must go. Beware of the tendency to ask the way when you know it perfectly well. Take the initiative— stop hesitating— take the first step. Be determined to act immediately in faith on what God says to you when He speaks, and never reconsider or change your initial decisions. If you hesitate when God tells you to do something, you are being careless, spurning the grace in which you stand. Take the initiative yourself, make a decision of your will right now, and make it impossible to go back. Burn your bridges behind you, saying, “I will write that letter,” or “I will pay that debt”; and then do it! Make it irrevocable. We have to get into the habit of carefully listening to God about everything, forming the habit of finding out what He says and heeding it. If, when a crisis comes, we instinctively turn to God, we will know that the habit has been formed in us. We have to take the initiative where we are, not where we have not yet been.

Post-mortem

Incorporation of Naga History, Cultures and Traditions

E

ducation is defined as the process of receiving or giving systematic instruction, the theory and practice of teaching, especially at a school or university. The term education has an immense implication on a person’s credential in today’s world and one’s pride solely lies within the peripheral of it. It is without a doubt that the forgone generation might not have the same decency and privileges millennials enjoy yet their zeal to give the best of knowledge to their offspring is far fetching and such endorsement itself defines the rising literates and intellects even in a very conservative society. What also intrigue the process is the passing down of knowledge, values and skills to the next generation keeping the culture alive beyond anything to be readily exposed and imitated. The evolution of a society trades its progress in the achievement one propound to its inhabitants and gradually triggering down the idea in adding a platform to many

unprivileged in attaining the code of living. The records are also enclosed in the manual for all to learn and practice There is also a high credibility of knowledge based linkage in any professional cognitive and logistic approach and maneuvering within the roots is where the focus has to be. The initiative to incorporate the need for self sustenance with the contemporary era is nonetheless the most apt requirement to predict where the roads may lead to. There is no denying that the past has given us enough to transform the present and it is for us to make use of it efficiently. How do we then acquire the maximum of knowledge in the least allotted time? The fact remains that the proportionality of a subject with the others has interlinked the growth of a child with better position of learning ingeniously and likewise for all educational laureates earning degrees with bookish knowledge is just too narrow to be termed a proper education but sadly con-

fining within the four corners of wall has been the traditional method of impartation. We are yet to see the changes of its outlook to influence the society in governance and the art of strengthening the stronghold of what has sustained us thus far. A real education will encapsulate the requisite quality in an individual to make a mark in the global front too which will inculcate discipline, ethical values, moral values, positive thinking, attitude of helping and giving to a society. A suffix to it may be acquiring the way of how the popular Nationalist propagate the ideology to thrive a Nation. Every student should be given the most convenient platform in its initial stage to overcome the fear and timidity that entangled the good virtue in ruining the prospect of a charismatic personality and the tools to hone them is right in front of us. For instance the recent implementation of NEP by the government of India is another device to transmit the message in a way pupils can assimilate and at the

same time implant the richness of its own traditions. It’s an astounding initiation and the outcome surely will instill the drive of patriotism the country is in need of. On its contrary, the lack of proper knowledge in ones existence will give rise to the trend of emulating other cultures and diminishing it’s pride even at the stake of letting them loose at their disposal. Its unalienable for the Nagas to diminish the stronghold of its uniqueness in the perspective of retaining our cultural heritage but the proud history of our existence is laid almost dormant to trod the declining path of a Nation’s downfall. The seed of an Indian education in aspect of incrementing the literacy rate has implanted the young to slowly emancipate themselves from the mainstream regulation and there is no hurry either but to prolong the negotiations alongside its agenda. These paradoxical approach is another way of liquidating the laymen of its indigenous abode for the protagonist to reap in the years

to come and there are no clear cut shield to currently prevent such intrusion. The sad irony of a revolutionary Government and activist is to burn themselves out and leave the public at the hands of our adversary. Mind you,the erstwhile tradition is gone if we ever had one. The reverberating ethos of the Colonialist is ever increasing to draw the card against the favor of our projection and very soon we will become a filial in our own soil. It is not far off for the Nagas to be within the fold of bondage lest we initiate the process of procuring the stand in sustaining us since its inception. The definition of Naga History is a cliché to the entire political world and WESEA in particular yet not a single phrase of it is inscribed in the prescribed text book of any National or state board. It’s a serious offences to ponder though the answer lies visibly within the purview of the oppressive legislator. Should we then let these contagious decline of our existing pride take the better of us or

In the midst of adversity: A Christian’s response

A

s of now, a national epidemic appears to be sweeping our country. Closing markets, economic uncertainty, political constraints, health complications, and other almost insurmountable challenges have culminated in “corona-crazy,” leaving many people exhausted, depressed, and enraged. Tensions are that as Christians and nonChristians engage in politically charged debates. When do you think the nation would be ready to reopen? When will things start to feel normal again? Is the government acting in defiance of the law and the constitution? How do we get the best possible treatment for those who are at risk? As everybody seeks to make sense of what is going on in the world, these and countless other issues have emerged from the periphery. When placed in positions that challenge us in ways that are potentially uncomfortable, it is all-too-easy for Christians to “forget our preparation.” But, to be sure, God is concerned about how you react in the midst of this crisis. Although the Bible does not say, “Respond this way to the coronavirus,” there are several biblical values that should guide our feelings, sentences, and acts. Let’s take a look at a few of them together. 1. THANK GOD IN ALL SITUATIONS. Here’s an order we like to give our kids to get them to stop whining. Paul’s advice to the Thessalonians, on the other hand, goes far beyond Christian catchphrases and Thanksgiving prayers. “Give thanks in all

situations,” he writes, “for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus” (1 Thessalonians 5:18). Did you hear what I said? “Give thanks in all situations,” Paul says. A Christian’s attitude and response is to “give thanks,” to be filled with a divine gratitude that comes from understanding and being known by Christ (even in the midst of pandemic). To top it off, Paul says that having this mindset and responding in this way is entering God’s will. What do Christians do in light of recent events? Give thanks to God. 2. PERFORM ALL ACTIVITIES WITHOUT COMPLAINT. If there was ever a person who had license to complain, it was the Apostle Paul. His liberties and freedoms were forcefully taken by the powers at be on more than one occasion. In fact, several of the New Testament letters that he penned were composed during his time in prison. What a case of social distancing and isolation! What was Paul’s answer, though? “Do all things without grumbling or disputing,” he writes to the Philippians in the middle of one of his unjust imprisonments (Philippians 2:14). What a harsh rebuke for so many of us! Does he really mean what he says? In an age when it is alltoo-easy and all-too-tempting to vent frustrations/annoyances on social media, God’s Word encourages us to be grateful and resolve not to complain. 3. BE CAREFUL Of YOUR WORDS. I understand. Your “social outlets” have all been stripped away from you. It’s not always

possible to process all that’s going on in the company of those you consider mates. As a result, many of us have taken to social media to express our ideas, grievances, and views. Though this isn’t inherently a negative thing in and of itself, it does have the ability to take us down a road that God does not approve of. “When there are many sentences, transgression is not absent,” Proverbs 10:19 states, “but whoever restrains his lips is prudent.” Allow me to put it another way. You sin more the more you speak. I can’t tell you how real this has proved to be in my own life. The Bible also instructs us on how we can and should not use our language. It is, in reality, one of the most recurring themes in the book of Proverbs. The lesson is obvious. Instead of tearing down, dividing, or putting down, use your speech to build up, edify, and improve. What a timely reminder, especially in light of the current situation. 4. BE PATIENT. Many of us had expected the quarantine to last much longer. What began as a welcoming submission in order to “love our neighbour” has become stale for many. “Patience” reserves have been exhausted, and an insatiable desire for things to “return to normal” has gradually replaced them. In times of difficulty, a soul who loses composure becomes irritated and resentful. “Rejoice in faith, be patient in tribulation, be constant in prayer,” Paul writes in the book of Romans (Romans 12:12). In the midst of adversity, Christ-followers should react with patience, rooted in the

Resolve to be patient, always thanking God for the promise that resides within you. 5. STAY FOCUSED ON THE MISSION. Pandemics have a way of throwing our routines for a loop. Unfortunately, a disrupted routine is always accompanied by a disoriented mind that loses concentration on the “marching orders” that have been issued to all Christians...to go and make disciples of Jesus Christ. For the past few weeks, many of us have been in “survival mode,” holding our heads down to “make it through” whatever is going on. The ill-conceived divide between vocational ministers and regular church members has expanded as “online church” has become necessary. This is something that the Bible is really straightforward on. All Christians, at all times, are commanded to go and make disciples. Now, more than ever, we must strengthen our resolve to reflect on the mission that Christ has given us. There is no higher calling or greater intent. This list could go on indefinitely. However, the argument is still valid. In the midst of the coronavirus pandemic, our answer is not merely insignificant. It’s a topic on which all believers can pause and reflect. Regardless of what is going on in the world, may these five simple points stir and inspire you to be more faithful to Christ. By Tsutokha Swu, Pastor, Diphupar ‘B’

We, the Nagas, are not less capable in restraining the occupational and exploitative ideals of sowing a xenophobic attitudes towards its own people. Failure of educating the Nagas of its own history has long been their agenda but it should not back us down in promoting a parallel propaganda of fostering patriotism within our own jurisdiction. A time has befall where the might of strength has eclipse to give birth to the might of soft powers and endorsing a knowledge based patriotism will ultimately dictate a sign of nobility and virtue of the Naga Nation. he world is grappling with the COVID-19 pandemic and such kind of pandemic drains the resources of any Governments. Nagaland is no different and despite the Government’s efforts in using all resources at its disposal to fight the pandemic, there are rooms for institutions particularly the Church from whom much help can be derived from. Merely depending on the Government alone to tackle the entire crisis is not justifiable but we should all own collective responsibilities in such a situation. The ones affected by the virus are our own parents, brothers, sisters, relatives and most importantly “our Church member.” In such a situation, the Church, with all its resources should now open up its infrastructure and manpower to aid and assist the Government. If the Church is there for good times such as Weddings, celebrations of new births, celebrations of Anniversaries, disposing normal deaths etc, should it not be there for its people during such bad times? Being an active and bonafide member of the Church and having a close association with the Church, I am of the belief that the Church could do more commendable job. The Church needs to work out contingency plans such as voluntary services from its members to assist the health care workers, opening up its guest/rest houses, church buildings etc. for COVID care centres as an when required. We are seeing how religious groups from Gurudwaras, Temples and Churches in India are extending health care facilities such as providing oxygen and aiding in disposal of dead bodies that have died of COVID related complications. In Nagaland the Church is an epitome of our lives and it should not shy away from our responsibilities. It should also usher a change in the syllabus of being less of theoretical and more of practical from now on as we never know when this pandemic will be over. “No one is safe until everyone is safe” and therefore the need of the hour is a collective effort irrespective of our background, religion, political affiliations, tribe etc to keep the virus at bay. Let us discipline ourselves and fight this pandemic together. Y. Kikheto Sema (Ias)

Sir,

Social stigma faster than the virus

It is understandable that there is confusion, anxiety, and fear among the public. Unfortunately, these factors are also fuelling harmful stereotypes. The outbreak of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has created social stigma and discriminatory behavior towards individuals who are perceived to have any contact with the disease. This is one of the most large-scale outbreaks known to the modern world. Incidents of social stigmatization towards those who are affected with COVID-19, including their family members, have been rampant. The outbreak of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has created social stigma and discriminatory behavior towards individuals who are perceived to have any contact with the disease. Ironically, social stigma has spread faster than the virus itself. The stigma is directed not only towards those who have recovered from COVID-19, those who are undergoing treatment, or who are presumed to be affected or who have succumbed to it or their families. The brunt of social stigma is also faced by frontline workers, medical practitioners, nurses, police personnel, etc. They have been forced to leave the neighborhood and denied access to their houses and the families have been threatened. The insurmountable atrocities that they have been undergoing to win this race against the virus have been ignored. Instead, social stigma has overpowered the goodwill of those for whom they are fighting. Social stigma towards different stakeholders during a pandemic like COVID-19 might play a significant role in undermining social cohesiveness, enforcing social segregation. New Delhi, May 10 (IANS): In her opening remark in the CWC meeting, Congress interim president Sonia Gandhi said the Covid-19 situation has become even more catastrophic and alleged that wilful patronage of super-spreader events were allowed for partisan gains and the government has priority like the Central Vista. “Governance failures have become even more stark and scientific advice has been wilfully ignored and the country is paying a horrendous price for the Modi government’s neglect of the pandemic, indeed its wilful patronage of superspreader events that were allowed for partisan gains,” Sonia Gandhi alleged while indicating the Kumbh was allowed and Prime Minister

held big rallies during the pandemic. She said far deadlier second wave has now overwhelmed us. Some scientists have now cautioned about a third wave overtaking us soon. Some states have already announced a complete lockdown. She alleged that the public health system across the country has all but collapsed. Vaccination coverage is woefully short of need and not expanding at the rate at which it must. “The Modi government has abdicated its responsibility. It has obliged the states to bear the cost of vaccinating the hundreds of millions in the 18 to 45 age group. Every expert has said that it would have made more sense and it would have been financially more equitable for the Centre to

Cong brainstorming over poor poll show begins at CWC meet

NEW DELHI, MAY 10 (PTI): Top Congress leaders, led by Sonia Gandhi, started a brainstorming session on Monday on the possible reasons for the party’s defeat in the recent Assembly polls at a meeting of the Congress Working Committee (CWC). Chairing the meeting, Congress president Gandhi expressed concern over a possible third wave of COVID-19 and accused the Narendra Modi government of having completely abdicated its duty and leaving the responsibility of vaccinating people against the viral disease to the states. “CWC meeting begins. Smt Sonia Gandhi

expresses concern about a possible third Covid wave and says that the Modi Government has abdicated its responsibility and left vaccination to States,” Congress’s chief spokesperson Randeep Surjewala wrote on Twitter. “She says it would have been financially more equitable for the Centre to provide a free vaccine to all,” he said. The CWC meet was convened to assess the party’s losses in the recentlyconcluded Assembly polls in four states and a Union Territory, amid demands from its leaders for a serious introspection over its poor performance at the hustings.

So, these are being carried out by court orders. This means the (central) government is falling short of discharging its duty,” the NCP leader alleged. Maharashtra Revenue Minister and senior Congress leader Balasaheb Thorat targeted the Centre over its vaccination programme, saying it has unfortunately been proved that the Modi government “does not have” any proper policy and planning to inoculate people. “The Centre earlier talked about successfully tackling the first wave (of COVID-19)...(but) the way elections were held, the way Kumbh Mela was organised...the entire country is suffering consequences of the same,” Thorat told reporters here. “The central government, its leadership, Prime Minister Narendra Modi ji are completely responsible for it, he claimed. The SC had to intervene and form the task force, Thorat noted, and asked

Most Backward Caste quota has resulted in other castes and communities shifting their allegiance from the AIADMK. Panneerselvam and those close to him had put the blame squarely on Edappadi Palaniswami on this matter. However, the overall acceptability EPS has had in the party and his public image has done him good in the selection for the post of opposition leader. Earlier, the meeting of the AIADMK legislators held at the party headquarters on Friday had failed to arrive at a consensus with both Palaniswami (EPS) and O. Panneerselvam (OPS) staking claim for the post. The Tamil Nadu assembly will convene on May 11 and the newly elected legislators will take the oath of office at 10 a.m. on Tuesday. The election of Speaker and Deputy Speaker will take place at 10 am on May 12. The new Speaker will be escorted to his seat by both the Chief Minister and Leader of Opposition and hence pressure was mounting on the party to select the leader of opposition.

MP gears up for 3rd COVID-19 wave; to set up ICU beds for kids

BHOPAL, MAY 10 (PTI): The Madhya Pradesh government will set up 360 ICU beds for children in hospitals across the state as part of its preparations for the third wave of COVID-19, minister Vishwas Kailash Sarang said on Monday. Health experts recently warned of a third wave of the coronavirus infection in the country, which could also affect children. On Sunday, state medical education minister Sarang held a meeting via video conference with deans and hospital superintendents of various government medical colleges and other senior officials to review the preparations to be made

NCP calls for ‘one nation, one policy’ to tackle COVID-19 MUMBAI, MAY 10 (PTI): The ruling NCP and Congress in Maharashtra on Monday hit out at the Centre over its handling of the COVID-19 situation in the country and called for “one nation, one policy” to fight the pandemic. State Minority Affairs Minister and NCP leader Nawab Malik also demanded that the Narendra Modi government convene an allparty meeting to chalk out the policy. “ T h e c o r o n av i r u s cannot be eradicated only through advertisements at a time when there is a need to work out ‘one nation, one policy’ considering the current COVID-19 situation in the country,” a statement said quoting Malik. He claimed the situation in Uttar Pradesh and Bihar was such that the last rites of COVID-19 victims were being performed in rivers instead of crematoriums. “The COVID-19 pandemic cannot be tackled until there is one policy for the country. The Modi government should call an all-party meeting to decide the policy,” he said. There is no doubt in anyone’s mind that “the Centre is not able to handle the COVID-19 situation,” he claimed. The meeting held at the party headquarters on Monday has reached a conclusion to elect EPS as the next opposition leader of Tamil Nadu. Sources in the AIADMK told IANS that EPS has got the support of 61 of the 66 party legislators. EPS got the edge as he was considered instrumental in the party’s win in Western Tamil Nadu and Northern Tamil Nadu while in South Tamil Nadu, which is the turf of the Thevar community and thereby OPS, did not yield the necessary results for the party. In the Cumbum district of South Tamil Nadu, OPS was the lone winner from Bodinayakanur constituency while all the other AIADMK candidates had to bite the dust. On the other hand, EPS won comfortably with more than 90,000 votes from his sitting constituency of Edappady in Salem district and also paved the way for the victory of 10 out of the 11 AIADMK candidates in the district. Thorat also claimed that adequate number of vaccine doses were not being made available to states to inoculate people in the age group of 18 to 44 years. He charged the Centre with not giving permission to foreign players willing to provide vaccines to India. Thorat also demanded that the Centre allow states to develop their own apps for people to register for vaccination. The Shiv Sena, which shares power in Maharashtra with the NCP and Congress, also hit out at the Centre, saying the SC took the step of forming the task force considering the COVID-19 situation, but “those ruling the country are engaged in politics”. As part of the plan, a 50-bed dedicated ICU (Intensive Care Unit) for children will be set up in Bhopal’s Hamidia Hospital, which is associated with the Government Gandhi Medical College, the minister said. He also directed officials to make available sufficient stock of medicines, injections and consumables

BJP hits out at Kejriwal govt over COVID-19 crisis

NEW DELHI, MAY 10 (PTI): The BJP on Monday slammed Delhi’s Arvind Kejriwal government over the COVID-19 crisis, claiming the chief minister has been busy spending crores on publicity and “misleading” people while washing his hands of responsibility and leaving everything to the Centre. Addressing a virtual press conference, BJP spokesperson Sambit Patra cited a RTI reply to say that the Kejriwal government has spent around Rs 805 crore on advertisements since 2015 but not opened a single new hospital in the city. He has been making daily appearances on the TV, “misleading” people and “lying”, Patra said, attacking the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader. “You keep advertising, claiming there will not be any lockdown, no shortage of oxygen and that people will be delivered oxygen at home. When you saw that you cannot control the situation, then you pointed fingers at the Centre and washed your hands of your responsibility,” he said. Patra noted that Kejriwal had claimed on April 26 that his government will order 1.34 crore vaccines, which is worth nearly Rs 1,400 crore.

in these ICUs. The minister also said 1,000 oxygen concentrators will be made available in 13 government medical colleges of MP. During the meeting, it was also decided to add 1,267 beds, including 767 ICU/HDU (high dependency units) beds, in staterun hospitals in the first phase of preparation for the third wave of COVID-19, he said. The minister directed officials to immediately procure all necessary equipment for setting up these facilities. Funds for purchasing these items will be provided to the medical colleges soon, he added.

226 oxygen cylinders seized from Bihar’s Katihar district

PATNA, MAY 10 (IANS): The district administration on Monday morning seized 226 oxygen cylinders in Bihar’s Katihar district. Shankar Sharan Omi, the SDM Katihar said: “The raid was conducted on the tip-off of local informers. “The cylinders are booked from Mumbai in the luggage compartment of the train bound to Katihar. We are trying to verify persons who booked cylinders from Mumbai and the receiver in Katihar,” the officer said. “Prima facie, it appeared to be a case of black marketing as no one came forward to claim the cylinders so far. We have also cross-checked with the district civil surgeon of Katihar whether any government or private hospital purchased the cylinders but he has also denied the same. We have asked railway police to conduct a thorough inquiry into the matter and submit a report with district administration Katihar,” Omi said. Meanwhile, a joint

team of the Economic Offences Wing (EOW) of Bihar police and Delhi Police managed to arrest two persons on the charge of duping a person on the pretext of providing an oxygen cylinder. The accused have been identified as Kishan Kumar and Samir Khan, residents of Takiyapar locality under Danapur sub-division in Patna district. “The accused lured a

person from Delhi to provide an oxygen cylinder at a cheap price. They asked the victim to deposit money online. During investigation, the mobile tower of the accused appeared in Danapur. Accordingly, a joint raid was conducted and arrested both the accused,” said V Dayal, ASP of EOW Patna. “We are trying to identify the other accused who are involved in the crime,” Dayal said.

Gujarat: Fake call centre targeting US citizens busted

T HI R U V A N A N THAPURAM, MAY 10 (IANS): Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan on Monday told Prime Minister Narendra Modi that with the Covid case load surging, his state will no longer be able to supply oxygen to Tamil Nadu and Karnataka, as was being done till now. In a letter to Modi, Vijayan said the state produces 219 metric tonnes of oxygen and given its huge daily requirement, it is in no position to give this outside the state any more, and hence, it should be allowed to use it for its own needs. T h e r e s e r ve s t o c k of 450 tonnes of oxygen has now come down to 86 tonnes and with cases continuing to rise, Kerala should be given exemption with regards to oxygen supplies, he demanded. Kerala presently has 4.23 lakh active Covid cases, and the daily test positivity rate is also at its peak of 28 per cent and given the spike, the total number of active cases is likely to cross five lakh very soon.

Army’s Western Command Decomposed bodies pile up on banks of Ganga sets up three 100-bed

CHANDIGARH, MAY 10 (PTI): To assist state governments in the fight against coronavirus, the Army’s Western Command has set up three 100-bed hospitals in Chandigarh, Faridabad and Patiala. These hospitals have been set up under the Indian Army’s “Operation Namaste”, launched in March this year to insulate the 1.3 million-strong force from coronavirus and extend all possible assistance in containing the pandemic. Lieutenant General R P Singh, General Officer Commanding-in-Chief , Wester n Command, on Monday announced the operationalisation of the first 100-bedded COVID Hospital at a hostel for international students in Panjab University. Punjab Governor and Chandigarh Administrator V P Singh

Bandore was present on the occasion. The other 100-bed facilities have been set up at Atal Bihari Vajpayee Government Medical College in Haryana’s Faridabad and Government Rajindra Hospital, Patiala, Punjab. These will be made operational on May 11 and 12, respectively, a defence release said here. Lieutenant General R P Singh highlighted the efforts put in by both the Indian Army and the civil administration in the early operationalisation of these hospitals. He assured governments of both states and the Chandigarh Administration of support in the fight against COVID 19. These hospitals have been set up on a war footing, having the capacity to accommodate and treat mild to moderate patients, the release said.

PATNA, MAY 10 (AGENCIES): Dozens of decomposed bodies were seen floating in Ganga river in Bihar’s Buxar district on Monday mor ning. The bloated bodies later piled up on the banks of the river in Chausa, a village located about 11 km from Buxar city, on Bihar’s border with Uttar Pradesh. While some reports said there were around 10 to 12 bodies, others said there were 40-45 bodies. Some reports placed the number even higher, at 150 bodies. Villagers and officials suspect these are Covid fatalities who were thrown into the river, leading to massive panic and worry that residents will contract the coronavirus infection. “They are bloated and have been in the water for at least five to seven days,” Chausa district official KK Upadhyay told NDTV. “We

As expected, Amit Mitra was given the responsibility of Finance but his other department Commerce and Industries was given to former Education Minister Partha Chatterjee. Chatterjee will also hold the portfolio of IT and Parliamentary Affairs.

On the other hand, Bratya Basu who was handling IT is now given the responsibility of the School and Higher Education Department. Mitra is physically not well and didn’t contest the election but he was brought back by the chief minister so that he could continue to handle finance. Though most of the former ministers retain their department but former Urban Development minister and former Mayor Firhad Hakim will be holding the portfolio of Transport and Housing. Earlier the state Transport Department was with Suvendu Adhikari who left TMC and joined BJP before the election. Adhikari who won from Nandigram defeating the chief minister in a closely fought battle will be the Leader of Opposition in the Assembly.

Over 300 hurt in Jerusalem clash

Jerusalem, MAY 10 (AGENCIES): Palestinian protesters threw rocks and Israeli police fired stun grenades and rubber bullets in clashes outside al-Aqsa mosque in Jerusalem on Monday, as Israel marked the anniversary of its capture of parts of the city in the 1967 Arab-Israeli war. The Palestinian Red Crescent Society said at least 305 Palestinians were injured in the violence, and 228 of them were taken to hospital. Several of the Palestinians were in critical condition and police said 21 officers were injured. Al-Aqsa, which is Islam’s third-holiest site, has been a focal point of violence in Jerusalem throughout the Muslim holy month of Ramadan, and the clashes have raised inter national concer n about wider conflict. The White House had called on Israel to ensure calm during “Jerusalem Day”, its annual celebration of the capture of East Jerusalem and the walled Old City that is home to Muslim, Jewish and Christian holy sites. In an effort to ease

the situation, Israeli police banned Jewish groups from paying Jerusalem Day visits to the holy plaza that houses al-Aqsa, and which Jews revere as the site of biblical Jewish temples. But a traditional Jerusalem Day march in which thousands of Israeli flagwaving Jewish youth walk through the Old City’s Damascus Gate and the

Muslim Quarter looked set to go ahead. At al-Aqsa, police fired tear gas, stun grenades and rubber bullets at hundreds of Palestinians who hurled rocks at them in the morning, witnesses said. The violence at the holy compound abated several hours later and witnesses said Israeli police pulled back and began

allowing Palestinians over the age of 40, deemed less likely to take part in confrontations, to enter. LAW AND ORDER In public remarks, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Israel was determined to uphold law and order in Jerusalem while preserving “freedom of worship and tolerance for all”.

Nabil Abu Rudeineh, a spokesman for Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, accused “Israeli occupation forces” of conducting a “brutal raid” at al-Aqsa. Israel views all of Jerusalem as its capital, including the eastern part that it annexed in a move that has not won international recognition. Palestinians want East Jerusalem to be the capital of a state they seek in the occupied West Bank and Gaza. Tensions have also been fuelled by the planned evictions of several Palestinian families from the Sheikh Jarrah neighbourhood in East Jerusalem. Israel’s attorney-general secured a deferment on Sunday of a Supreme Court hearing on Monday in the long-running evictions case that had threatened to stoke more violence. A lower court had found in favour of Jewish settlers’ claim to the land on which the Palestinians’ homes are located, a decision seen by Palestinians as an attempt by Israel to drive them out of contested Jerusalem.

Thousands suspended at Myanmar universities as junta targets education

MANDALAY, MAY 10 (AGENCIES): More than 11,000 academics and other university staff opposed to Myanmar’s ruling junta have been suspended after going on strike in protest against military rule, a teachers’ group told Reuters. The suspensions come as the resumption of universities after a year closed due to the coronavirus epidemic prompts a new confrontation between the army and the staff and students who are calling for boycotts over the Feb. 1 coup. “I feel upset to give up a job that I adored so much, but I feel proud to stand against injustice,” said one 37-year-old university rector, who gave her name only as Thandar for fear of reprisals. “My department summoned me today. I’m not going. We shouldn’t follow the orders of the military council.” A professor on a fellowship in the United States said she was told she would have to declare opposition to the strikes or lose her job. Her university authorities had told her every scholar would be tracked down and forced to choose, she told Reuters.

Students hold a banner and flash the three-finger salute in a protest against Myanmar’s junta, in Mandalay.

As of Monday, more than 11,100 academic and other staff had been suspended from colleges and universities offering degrees, an official of the Myanmar Teachers’ Federation told Reuters, declining to be identified for fear of reprisals. Reuters was not immediately able to ascertain exactly what proportion of total staff that figure represents. Myanmar had more than 26,000 teachers in universities and other tertiary education institutions in 2018, according to the most recent World Bank data. Students and teachers were at the forefront of op-

position during nearly half a century of military rule and have been prominent in the protests since the army detained elected leader Aung San Suu Kyi and halted a decade of tentative democratic reforms. Many teachers, like medics and other government workers, have stopped work as part of a civil disobedience movement that has paralysed Myanmar. As protests flared after the coup, security forces occupied campuses in the biggest city, Yangon, and elsewhere. A spokesman for the junta did not respond to phone calls seeking comment on the suspensions.

15 dead in Afghanistan as Taliban announces Eid ceasefire Nepal Prime Minister Oli loses vote of confidence

KABUL, MAY 10 (IANS): At least 15 people, mainly civilians, were killed in Afghanistan on Monday, the same day Taliban militants announced a nationwide three-day ceasefire for the upcoming Eid-al-Fitr holidays. The holidays are due to start either on Wednesday or Thursday depending on the sighting of the new moon, but the latest violence cast a pall over the news of any short-lived reduction in violence, reports dpa news agency. All Taliban fighters are instructed to cease offensive operations across the country from the first to the third day of Eid-al Fitr, the

Muslim holiday marking the end of Ramadan, a Taliban statement published late Sunday read. Taliban fighters are prohibited from visiting government-controlled areas or giving “enemy personnel” access to areas controlled by the Islamists. A response from the government in Kabul is still pending. The Taliban has declared ceasefires to mark the end of Ramadan in the past. There have been growing concerns about the security situation in Afghanistan since May 1, the date that international troops officially began their withdrawal. The process is due to be com-

The Committee has resolved to identify any negligence leading up to the attack, and may seek technical assistance from foreign experts. Meanwhile, President Ibrahim Solih has ordered an audit on the Maldives Police Service (MPS) and Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) in order to ascertain the reason for security failures leading to the attack which took place in Male on May 6. Nasheed was critically injured when a remotely-

There were conflicting reports about the casualty figures. Provincial governor Taj Mohammad Jahid told dpa that two soldiers were killed and five others were wounded in a checkpoint. ISLAMABAD, MAY 10 (PTI): Pakistan, keen to exit from the grey list of the FATF, is set to introduce new rules relating to anti-money laundering cases and change the prosecution process to meet its remaining tough conditions, a media report said on Monday. Pakistan was put on the grey list by the Paris-based Financial Action Task Force (FATF), the global watchdog for money laundering and terror financing in June 2018 and the country has been struggling to come out of it. The Dawn newspaper reported that the changes being made also include the transfer of investigations and prosecution of antimoney laundering (AML) cases from police, provincial anti-corruption establishments (ACEs) and other similar agencies to specialised agencies. This is part of two sets of rules including the AML (Forfeited Properties Management) Rules K Y M C

Imran Khan

2021 and the AML (Referral) Rules 2021 under the National Policy Statement on Follow the Money approved by the federal Cabinet meeting a few days ago, the report said. These rules and related notifications for certain changes in the existing schedule of Anti-Money Laundering Act 2010 (AMLA) would come into force immediately to be followed by the appointment of administrators and special public prosecutors for implementation.

Based on these measures, the FATF would conclude if Pakistan has complied with three outstanding benchmarks, out of 27, that blocked its exit from the grey list in February this year. Several review meetings of the FATF are scheduled to begin in the second week of June, culminating in the next FATF plenary on June 21-25. The three outstanding action points (out of a total of 27) include (i) demonstrating that terrorist financing (TF) investigations and prosecutions target persons and entities acting on behalf or at the directive of the designated persons or entities. Demonstrating that TF prosecutions result in effective, proportionate, and dissuasive sanctions; and (iii) demonstrating effective implementation of targeted financial sanctions against all designated terrorists, particularly those acting for them or on their behalf.

M A D R I D, M AY 1 0 (AGENCIES): A late Eden Hazard goal earned a point for Real Madrid against Sevilla as the defending champions were denied top spot in La Liga. Toni Kroos’ shot in

He earned $1.458 million for Sunday’s victory in the $8.1-million tournament, which was played in front of significant numbers of spectators, as 30 percent capacity was allowed in Charlotte. “It’s just awesome to play in front of these people again,” McIlroy said. “You know when we came back from the pandemic, I thought I’d enjoy the peace and quiet a little bit, but I soon realized that to bring the best out of myself I needed this. “I feel off the energy so much -- maybe here more so than anywhere else just because it’s the first place I’ve won three times, so the crowd has just been awesome all week and they really carried me through today.”

Germany’s Zverev, conqueror of claycourt specialists Rafa Nadal and Dominic Thiem en route to the final, dropped his first set of the tournament. However, he fought back under a closed roof at the Manolo Santana stadium to lift his first claycourt title since 2019. “ I fe e l awe so m e,” Zverev said at a courtside interview. “It’s great. This is definitely a special win. I just want to enjoy it. I didn’t play too many guys who can serve like him, so it was a difficult match.” Berrettini showed no sign of nerves in his maiden

ATP 1000 final and landed the first blow, taking a seesawing opening set in a tiebreak, where he initially let slip a 5-0 advantage and then saved a set point. But Zverev, who was champion in Madrid in 2018, hit back strongly in the second set, breaking the 25-

year-old Italian in the ninth game to force a decider. With unforced errors creeping into Berrettini’s game, the Italian squandered a break point at 2-2 and then proceeded to drop his own serve as Zverev inched closer to victory.
