Protests flare across India over anti-Prophet comments

LUCKNOW/RANCHI, JUN 10 (PTI): Protests erupted in several parts of the country on Friday against the controversial remarks on Prophet Mohammad by two now-suspended BJP functionaries leaving a few policemen injured in stone pelting and forcing security forces to resort to lathi-charge, tear gas shelling and firing in the air at some places. Authorities in Jammu clamped curfew in few areas and parts of the Kashmir Valley observed a shutdown while prohibitory orders were imposed in parts of Ranchi as slogan shouting protesters carrying placards demanded the arrest of Nupur Sharma, a former BJP spokesperson, and Naveen Jindal, a former head of the Delhi BJP’s media unit. and several arrests were also made by the police. Hundreds of protesters massed outside Jama Masjid and some of them gathered on the steps of the mosque. However, Shahi Imam of Jama Masjid, Syed Ahmed Bukhari, distanced himself from the protests saying “nobody knows who the protesters were” and demanded action against such people. Senior police officials said the protests were held peacefully and lasted for 15 to 20 minutes.

In Uttar Pradesh, stones were pelted at policemen in Prayagraj and Saharanpur during the protests which were also witnessed in Bijnor, Moradabad, Rampur and Lucknow. In Prayagraj, some motorcycles and carts were set on fire and an attempt made to set ablaze a police vehicle, a police official said. Police used tear gas and lathis to disperse mobs and peace was later restored, the official said, adding that one policeman was hurt in

of Kashmir, an official said. In Srinagar, protests were held at Lal Chowk, Batamaloo, Tengpora and other places with the demonstrators holding placards. Jammu and Kashmir DGP Dilbag Singh appealed to people to behave responsibly and not get misled by provocation besides maintaining communal harmony. Hundreds of protesters blocked roads in different parts of Howrah district in West Bengal. Some agitators clashed with personnel

at Dhulagarh, Panchla and Uluberia when they tried to lift the blockade on National Highway-6. Police had to baton charge to disperse the crowd at Dhulagarh and Panchla, where the demonstrators pelted stones in retaliation, causing damage to nearby cars, police said. The protesters also blocked railway tracks between Fuleswar and Chengail stations in the HowrahKharagpur section from 1.22 pm, a South Eastern Railway official said, adding four trains were cancelled, while two were diverted due to the agitation. In Gujarat, protests were held in some areas of Ahmedabad and Vadodara. Shops and markets in Muslim-dominated Dariyapur and Karanj areas in Ahmedabad remained shut while in Dariyapur, several men and teenagers gathered on a main road with placards.

Protests were staged in several cities of Maharashtra though no untoward incident was reported from anywhere. In Panvel city in Navi Mumbai, at least 3,000 protesters including around 1,000 women took out a march, demanding the arrest of Sharma and Jindal. A protest was also held at Shivaji Chowk in Vashi, where a delegation submitted their demands to the Vashi Police Station. Similar protest gatherings or marches were held in Thane, Solapur, Nandurbar, Parbhani, Beed, Latur, Bhandara, Chandrapur and Pune. Protesters in Hyderabad were seen holding placards that read “Arrest Nupur Sharma.” Several students of Jamia Millia Islamia staged a demonstration on the varsity campus in Delhi and demanded arrest of Sharma.

DIMAPUR, JUN 10 (NPN): The Home department has asked all parties to maintain status quo in the matter regarding dissolution of the Lotha Baptist Church Association (LBCA) administration and replacing it with an interim administration by the Lotha Hoho. Office of the Commissioner Nagaland, in a letter to DC Wokha, dated June 10, 2022, observed that the steps taken by the Lotha Hoho and consequent action, if any, at this juncture could be construed as interference in the Court proceedings and also considered as obstruction on the administration of justice, as the matter was subjudice. 19, 2022 notification issued by the Home department and November 16, 2021 notification issued by Municipal Affairs Department, stated that concerns raised by the petitioners have been

answered. The court also asked the state government to consider installing CCTVs in those inter-State gates. The PIL was filed by representatives of ACAUT, BAN and PAC.

In their representation to the speaker, the two bodies said despite several representations and agitation, the overstay of the retired officer beyond the date of superannuation had demotivated the officers and staff of the Assembly secretariat. They also accused the speaker of dodging the repercussions caused by his office by extending the service of the retired officer. It may be mentioned that NASSA, as part of its first phase agitation, observed a two-day pen down strike on June 3 and 4, which was later intensified with its members wearing black badges.

NFHRCC identifies hiccups in some sectors DIMAPUR, JUN 10 (NPN): Nagaland Foothills Road Coordination Committee (NFHRCC), which held a meeting on June 8, 2022, said some hiccups have been identified in some sectors and accordingly resolved to write to respective villages/areas, where some overlapping of works arose, for an amicable settlement. In a press note, NFHRCC convenor Supu Jamir, coconvenor Hokiye Yepthomi, general secretary W Lemba Chang and assistant general secretary Chenithung Humtsoe said that the meeting deliberated on the ongoing motorable road foothills road constructions at sector wise.

They said the committee has also identified “some vital points” with regard to additional constructions of bridges/culverts in certain sectors particularity along the Niuland-Huvekhu-Old Ralan stretch. NFHRCC recommended immediate repair of hanging bridge over Dikhu river in Naganimora sectors. In order to ascertain clear picture of the ongoing motorable road construction, the committee also resolved to hold meeting with all the affected divisional EEs/ SDOs, PWD(R&B) along with respective contractor firms with due permission from CE, PWD(R&B) preferably on June 17, 2022.

Further, the committee re-affirmed to appeal to the competent authority to judiciously utilize the remaining amount of Rs.3 crore out of Rs. 20 crore within the foothills road constructions. After obser ving the “pathetic road conditions” particularity from AhthibungKhelma during its visit to Peren district on April 22 & 23, 2022, the committee has reiterated appeal to the state government and PWD (R&B) to make the road pliable “in the greater interest of the public.” The committee further appealed to all the contractors dealing with logs/mining and stone (Cont’d on p-8) K Y M C
