Protests flare across India over anti-Prophet comments
LUCKNOW/RANCHI, JUN 10 (PTI): Protests erupted in several parts of the country on Friday against the controversial remarks on Prophet Mohammad by two now-suspended BJP functionaries leaving a few policemen injured in stone pelting and forcing security forces to resort to lathi-charge, tear gas shelling and firing in the air at some places. Authorities in Jammu clamped curfew in few areas and parts of the Kashmir Valley observed a shutdown while prohibitory orders were imposed in parts of Ranchi as slogan shouting protesters carrying placards demanded the arrest of Nupur Sharma, a former BJP spokesperson, and Naveen Jindal, a former head of the Delhi BJP’s media unit. Most of the protests including at the historic Jama Masjid in Delhi broke out after the Friday prayers

and several arrests were also made by the police. Hundreds of protesters massed outside Jama Masjid and some of them gathered on the steps of the mosque. However, Shahi Imam of Jama Masjid, Syed Ahmed Bukhari, distanced himself from the protests saying “nobody knows who the protesters were” and demanded action against such people. Senior police officials said the protests were held peacefully and lasted for 15 to 20 minutes.
In Uttar Pradesh, stones were pelted at policemen in Prayagraj and Saharanpur during the protests which were also witnessed in Bijnor, Moradabad, Rampur and Lucknow. In Prayagraj, some motorcycles and carts were set on fire and an attempt made to set ablaze a police vehicle, a police official said. Police used tear gas and lathis to disperse mobs and peace was later restored, the official said, adding that one policeman was hurt in
Prayagraj. In Saharanpur, protesters demanded death sentence for Nupur Sharma. Prohibitor y orders were imposed in parts of Jharkhand capital Ranchi after some policemen and others were injured while trying to control an irate mob near Hanuman temple on the city’s Main Road, an official said. Police fired in the air besides resorting to lathicharge to control the mob which spilled out on the road after Friday prayers in
a mosque located close by. The protesters shouted slogans and pelted policemen with stones. Tension mounted in Jammu’s Bhaderwah and some areas of Kishtwar prompting authorities to impose curfew while parts of Kashmir observed a shutdown. Internet services were snapped in Bhaderwah and Kishtwar towns and Srinagar city as a precautionary measure. Mobile Internet was also suspended in parts
of Kashmir, an official said. In Srinagar, protests were held at Lal Chowk, Batamaloo, Tengpora and other places with the demonstrators holding placards. Jammu and Kashmir DGP Dilbag Singh appealed to people to behave responsibly and not get misled by provocation besides maintaining communal harmony. Hundreds of protesters blocked roads in different parts of Howrah district in West Bengal. Some agitators clashed with personnel
at Dhulagarh, Panchla and Uluberia when they tried to lift the blockade on National Highway-6. Police had to baton charge to disperse the crowd at Dhulagarh and Panchla, where the demonstrators pelted stones in retaliation, causing damage to nearby cars, police said. The protesters also blocked railway tracks between Fuleswar and Chengail stations in the HowrahKharagpur section from 1.22 pm, a South Eastern Railway official said, adding four trains were cancelled, while two were diverted due to the agitation. In Gujarat, protests were held in some areas of Ahmedabad and Vadodara. Shops and markets in Muslim-dominated Dariyapur and Karanj areas in Ahmedabad remained shut while in Dariyapur, several men and teenagers gathered on a main road with placards.
Protests were staged in several cities of Maharashtra though no untoward incident was reported from anywhere. In Panvel city in Navi Mumbai, at least 3,000 protesters including around 1,000 women took out a march, demanding the arrest of Sharma and Jindal. A protest was also held at Shivaji Chowk in Vashi, where a delegation submitted their demands to the Vashi Police Station. Similar protest gatherings or marches were held in Thane, Solapur, Nandurbar, Parbhani, Beed, Latur, Bhandara, Chandrapur and Pune. Protesters in Hyderabad were seen holding placards that read “Arrest Nupur Sharma.” Several students of Jamia Millia Islamia staged a demonstration on the varsity campus in Delhi and demanded arrest of Sharma.
RS: Cong, BJP bag 4 seats each; counting stalled in two States HC disposes PIL on ‘taxation’; urges govt to install CCTVs at check gates NEW DELHI, JUN 10 (AGENCIES): BJP and Congress won four seats each in the Rajya Sabha elections held on Friday in Karnataka and Rajasthan. Counting of votes for the Rajya Sabha elections were stalled due to alleged violation of rules, officials said. High drama unfolded in Haryana and Maharashtra as two Congress MLAs in Haryana, and three MLAs of ruling MVA in Maharashtra were accused of violating the norms as they showed their votes to someone other than the party election agent. Counting will resume after Election Commission gives its ruling. Karnataka: Union Fi-
nance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, BJP leaders Jaggesh and Lahar Singh, and Congress leader Jairam Ramesh won the polls from Karnataka. BJP managed to win the third seat despite lacking enough first preference votes. It is believed that the disagreement between Congress and JD(S) helped the BJP win an extra seat. A JD(S) legislator reportedly voted for BJP. Rajasthan: The ruling Congress on Friday won three of the four Rajya Sabha seats in Rajasthan, overcoming the challenge posed by BJPbacked independent candidate Subhash Chandra, according to the party. The BJP got the fourth seat. Congress

KOHIMA, JUN 10 (NPN): With no positive response from the State government, Nagaland Assembly Secretariat Staff Association (NASSA) on Friday decided to continue protesting indefinitely against the appointment of Dr PJ Antony to the post of principal secretary in the Nagaland Legislative Assembly (NLA) secretariat. Following a meeting of NASSA and Joint Action Committee (JAC), NASSA secretary Talirenla and JAC secretary Sezoto Theyo said the association reaffirmed and resolved to adhere to its earlier resolution and strive
candidates Randeep Surjewala, Mukul Wasnik and Pramod Tiwari were elected . Maharashtra: The counting was held up in Maharashtra after opposition BJP alleged three MLAs of the ruling Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA)--Cabinet ministers Jitendra Awhad (NCP) and Yashomati Thakur (Congress), besides Shiv Sena legislator Suhas Kande violated the model code for voting. BJP has alleged that Awhad and Thakur handed over their ballots to their party agents instead of only showing them the ballots, while Kande showed his ballot to two different agents. Haryana: The counting
to fight for the revocation of the appointment order of Antony. Both the bodies also served an ultimatum to Nagaland Legislative Assembly speaker Sharingain Longkümer demanding revocation of the appointment order latest by June 13 afternoon. They warned that if their demands were not met within the stipulated time then they would prevent the retired officer from entering the NLA secretariat complex, adding that any forceful entry by Anthony would be at his own risk and that they should not be held responsible for any undesirable situation arising out of this.
was put on hold in Haryana for identical reasons. The BJP and the Independent candidate backed by it have urged the ECI to cancel the votes of two Congress MLAs. BJP nominee Krishan Lal Panwar and Independent candidate Kartikeya Sharma shot off a missive to EC, alleging Congress MLAs Kiran Choudhary and BB Batra showed their ballot papers to unauthorised persons after marking them and that the episodes were “duly captured” on cameras. The counting has been put on hold in view of the complaint made to the Election Commission, sources said in Chandigarh.
DIMAPUR, JUN 10 (NPN): The Gauhati High Cour t (GHC) Kohima Bench has disposed of a Public Interest Litigation on collection of illegal taxes at various check gates
in Nagaland and also on double/dual taxation over the inter State goods. In an order, the twojudge bench of Justice S. Serto and Justice Kakheto Sema considering the May
19, 2022 notification issued by the Home department and November 16, 2021 notification issued by Municipal Affairs Department, stated that concerns raised by the petitioners have been
answered. The court also asked the state government to consider installing CCTVs in those inter-State gates. The PIL was filed by representatives of ACAUT, BAN and PAC.
In their representation to the speaker, the two bodies said despite several representations and agitation, the overstay of the retired officer beyond the date of superannuation had demotivated the officers and staff of the Assembly secretariat. They also accused the speaker of dodging the repercussions caused by his office by extending the service of the retired officer. It may be mentioned that NASSA, as part of its first phase agitation, observed a two-day pen down strike on June 3 and 4, which was later intensified with its members wearing black badges.

government employees, making it the state with the highest ratio of government employees per population in the country. At such a scenario, the advisor said the government was not in the position to employ all the educated unemployed into the government sector as it was already saturated. Asserting that skill development training would benefit the unemployed
population, Ayemi urged the youth to be skilled so that they not only become employable but also gain job satisfaction. Admitting that the state government alone would not be able to organise skill development programmes in large scales across the state, the advisor lauded organisations such as CAN Youth for coming forward to skill and empower youths.
45 women certified by Central Silk Board
Stressing on the importance of skilling youth at the grass-root level, the advisor also suggested leaders and GBs at the villages and towns to partner with organisations and conduct trainings for their respective youths. Addressing the gathering as the guest of honour, newly appointed Deputy Commissioner (DC) Dimapur, Sachin Jaiswal described skill as the most important trait and acknowledged the CAN Youth for coming up with such projects to empower youth through skill-oriented trainings. Correspondent KOHIMA, JUN 10 (NPN): A total of 48 women received their certificates from Central Silk Board, Ministry of Textiles, Government of India after completing a 45 days training course on spinning and weaving under the Department of Sericulture. The certificates were handed out to the trainees by director of Sericulture, T Sanny, Pongener, during a programme at AMK building, here on Friday. In his speech, Pongener highlighted about the Samarth Scheme 2021-2022, a capacity building program in the textile sector under which the training was conducted. He pointed out that textile was a very vast sector which covers jute, rubber, handloom, handicraft, nylon, polyester and sericulture. He informed that sericulture Nagaland had been requesting the Ministry of Textiles to allot training centres in the State which was finally granted after a span of two years. He said with the four newly opened training centres in Dimapur, Kohima,
Mokokchung and Wokha would train a total of 500 beneficiaries during 20212022. He said Samarth was a collaborative scheme of 50/50 basis here the State would provide infrastructure and manpower in the form of trainers’ half of its share while the ministry would provide financial assistance to meet its share of the other half. Pongener disclosed that during the course of the training, experts from National Skill Qualification Framework would come and make the final assessment of the trainees basing on which the certificates would be issued. The scheme’s primary aim is to promote traditional weaving and spinning practices at the same time guide the trainees to produce garments that would meet national and international standards, the director said. Shedding light on importance of the certificate, Pongener said since it was issued by a very standardised body, the same could be used to get employment in any part of the world where there was a textile sector.
He observed that no matter how qualified an individual may be, but if they do not possess specific skills which were supported by its respective certificates, they would not be employable anywhere. The whole duration of the training was strictly monitored by CCTVs at the centres coupled with attendance taken by a biometric device. Pongener urged the trainees to make the best use of their training and also the certificate they had earned. He said they were all now part of the Sericulture department and would be indirectly participating in all the departmental activities and promotion of sericulture in the State. Meanwhile Pongener also lauded the three trainers who were the main instructors during the course. DSO has informed that another batch of training was in progress and therefore any indigenous inhabitant of Nagaland interested undergo the training could register themselves at District Sericulture Office, Chandmari colony, Kohima during office hours.

It was fortunate that swift action of the police avoided a major tragedy that would have been created by the impact of the blast, it said. They will continue to
target the pharmacy, the release threatened. The release further clarified that the group has nothing to do with the blast at the gate of Little Flowers School, Imphal in the morning of May 6. It also refuted the police claim of nabbing a man behind the series of blasts in Imphal areas in recent time, including at Little Flowers School. The arrested man was not a cadre of the outfit. The explosives and other materials which the police recovered from his house, however, belonged to the group. Cadres of the group had deposited items to the house of the man to avoid arrest by security forces on their way to a mission. On June 7, the state police claimed NRFM was behind the recent series of bomb blasts in Imphal area, including at the gate of the Little Flowers School, while informing that an active cadre of the group was arrested by them during an operation at Kangla Sangomshang of Imphal East district.

Agartala-Kolkata bus service via Dhaka resumes after two years
AGARTALA, JUN 10 (PTI): The Agartala-Kolkata bus service via Dhaka resumed on Friday after a hiatus of over two years due to the COVID-19 pandemic, a Tripura minister said. State Transport Minister Pranajit Singha Roy flagged off the international bus service at the integrated checkpost at Akhaura. “The cross-border bus service will boost cooperation between India and Bangladesh,” the minister said during the programme. Altogether 28 passengers boarded the 40-seater bus for Kolkata via Dhaka, and the service will be available for six days a week. The bus will cover a distance of around 500 km from Agartala to Kolkata via Dhaka in around 19 hours. A train journey between the two destinations via Guwahati takes around 35 hours, an official said. The bus facility on this route was suspended in March 2020 after the pandemic struck. The fare from Agartala to Kolkata via Dhaka will be Rs 2,300 per passenger, including travel-

ling tax, while it will be Rs 1,000 from Tripura capital to Dhaka. “The direct bus service will be of help to people in view of cancellations of long-distance trains due to flood and landslide in neighboring Assam and high demand for flights resulting in a sharp increase in airfare,” the minister said. Roy said the number of passengers will increase in the days to come as they will be aware of the resumption of the bus service. He also appealed the authorities concerned to ensure smooth running of buses in the cross-border
route in strict adherence to foreign laws. He asserted that the state’s connectivity with rest of the country has improved during the BJP-led NDA regime at the Centre. Roy also said the state government has taken an initiative to increase the number of daily flights from the airport here. Currently, the count is 18. Agartala Mayor Deepak Majumder and Assistant High Commissioner of Bangladesh in Agartala Arif Mohammad, state’s Principal Secretary LH Darlong were present at the programme.
Congress files police complaint Tripura BJP leaders face public anger; police fire tear gas against Nupur, Naveen in Assam GUWAHATI, JUN 10 (PTI): The Congress on Friday lodged a police complaint against suspended BJP spokespersons Nupur Sharma and Navin Jindal in Guwahati for their controversial remarks against Prophet Mohammad. Police said they are looking into the matter and are yet to register a case on the basis of the complaint lodged at Bhangagarh police station. “We have received the complaint regarding the remarks made by the persons in question. We are yet to register a case and it is still in enquiry stage,” a police officer said. Sharma, who made an objectionable statement about the Prophet during a TV debate on the Gyanvapi controversy, and Jindal, who posted a derogatory remark on his Twitter handle, were suspended by the party. Senior spokesperson
Nupur Sharma and Naveen Jindal of Assam Congress Romen Chandra Borthakur, who filed the complaint on behalf of his party, alleged that the image of India has been tarnished, and age-old unity and integrity have been affected due to the statements by Sharma and Jindal. Talking to reporters, Borthakur maintained that India should not bow down to international pressure and apologise for the remarks made by the duo as their statements were not the country’s official stance.
A complaint was also filed against the Sharma, Jindal and AIMIM leader Akbaruddin Owaisi at the same police station in Guwahati on Tuesday by Dulu Ahmed, a leader of Assam Jatiya Parishad (AJP). Ahmed also demanded action against Owaisi, a Telangana MLA, for allegedly making “objectionable comments” against Hindus at a public meeting. Police are yet to register a case in connection with Ahmed’s complaint as well.
AGARTALA, JUN 10 ( AGENCIES): Tripura tribal welfare minister and BJP leader Ram Pada Jamatia was at the receiving end of public anger while attending an administrative camp in the West Tripura district on Friday, reports East Mojo. This is the third time in a row that Jamatia has faced public protests during his course of attending a government programme. Earlier, Jamatia’s vehicle was attacked at Jampuijala on Thursday and on Wednesday, protests broke out at Taidu during a joining programme. Speaking on the issue, SDPO Mohanpur Kamal Bikash Majumder said, “There was an administrative camp organized at Daragabari school of Shimna. Tribal Welfare Minister Ram Pada Jamatia and local BJP leader Mangal Debbarma were supposed to attend the event. But suddenly, several women protestors gathered at the spot and indulged in
sloganeering against the minister. Sensing trouble, the security arrangements had already been tightened, and the leaders were safely evacuated from the area.” Later, he said, to disperse the crowd, tear gas shells were fired, and a large contingent of the TSR and Police forces was deployed to take control of the situation. One cop sustained minor injuries during the scuffle with local women. “Ten people had been taken under police custody as preventive arrest. Three people were injured in the scuffle broke out between police and protestors including a police constable. A suo moto case is being lodged with the local police station,” SDPO Majumder told EastMojo over the phone. Non-submission of accounts by councils to be probed : Malik

SHILLONG, JUNE 10: Meghalaya Governor Satya Pal Malik on Friday said an inquiry could be possibly instituted to probe non submission of accounts by the three autonomous district councils to the Comptroller and Auditor General of India. Malik said necessary action needs to be taken, if required a probe, on the reason behind the non-submission of accounts to the CAG for the past few years. The district councils have also not been tabling the CAG report in the council sessions. According to the Raj Bhavan, the Governor received a letter from the CAG on Wednesday re-
garding the non-submission of accounts. “Governor Satya Pal Malik received a letter on June 8, 2022 relating to the matter of non-submission of accounts by the district councils over a period of few successive years and nontabling of reports of CAG in the district councils,” Commissioner and Secretary to Governor, Pravin Bakshi said. Malik immediately took up the matter with Chief Minister Conrad Sangma the next day over the phone. Malik has also sent a Demi Official letter to the Chief Minister urging him to ensure timely and correct preparation of accounts by the concerned district councils.
In the letter to Malik, the CAG pointed out as many as ten accounts — two of Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) , three of Jaintia Hills Autonomous District Council (JHADC) and five of the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC) that are still pending for submission as on December 31, 2021. The GHADC has not submitted accounts from 2016-17 to 2020-21, the JHADC has not submitted accounts from 2018-19 to 2020-21 while the KHADC is yet to submit the accounts for 2019-20 and 2020-21. The CAG also revealed that the deficiencies in the autonomous district councils were communicated to Chief Secretary RV Suchi-
ang on March 17, 2022, the Chief Executive Members of the respective Councils on March 23, 2022 and Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma on March 30, but no action was taken by any of the authorities. Chief Minister Conrad Sangma said that the District Council Affairs Minister Lahkmen Rymbui himself had conducted a meeting and the department had instructed and written to the different ADCs to reply and give a detailed report on the matter. “But none of the replies have come yet from them. So we are awaiting a reply from them on this,” Sangma said. Over the recent past, there have been several al-
legations of corruption in the district councils. The BJP which is an ally in the ruling Meghalaya Democratic Alliance government has levelled allegations of corruption in the councils, especially in the Garo Hills and Jaintia Hills district councils. According to the BJP, funds amounting to crores have been embezzled under the Special Assistance Grants and the party has earlier sought a CBI probe into the allegations and also wanted a proper audit of the accounts from the period 2015 to 2020. “If required and upon consultation with the Chief Minister, an inquiry could also be conducted on the lapses in the district councils,” Malik said.

from Kangpokpi, Kamjong and Ukhrul districts who earlier depended on poppy cultivation for their liveli-
hood had been benefited with alternative arrangements under the war on drugs campaign.
He stressed on the need of concerned officials to visit various villages and meet the farmers, making them aware of the ill-effects of poppy cultivation and about the initiatives of the government towards providing alternative arrangements to earn their livelihood. He also suggested that concerned officials should conduct camps at different places for the timely provision of saplings and seeds for suitable alternative cropping. Terming the people’s unwavering support to the war on drugs campaign as

All the other officials came out of the venue in tight police security.” One person sustained serious injuries, and was referred to GBP hospital, Debbarma told EastMojo. Later, TIPRA MDC Rabindra Debbarma and MLA Brishaketu Debbarma held protests in Khowai Chowmuhani and Hejamara condemning the alleged police brutality on women.

Historians gave prominence to Mughals, little on Pandyas, Mauryas, Guptas: Shah
NEW DELHI, JUN 10 (PTI): Most of the historians in India have given prominence in recording the history of Mughals only, ignoring the glorious rules of many empires like Pandyas, Cholas, Mauryas, Guptas and Ahoms, Union Home Minister Amit Shah said on Friday. Releasing a book ‘Maharana: Sahastra Varsha Ka Dharma Yuddha’, Shah also said that the battle fought for the protection of the culture, language and religion for 1,000 years has not gone in vain as “India is again standing with respect before the world now and the country’s glory is recognised”. “I want to tell something to the historians. We have many empires but historians have concentrated only on the Mughals and wrote mostly about them. The Pandya empire ruled for 800 years. The Ahom empire ruled Assam for 650 years. They (Ahoms) had even defeated Bakhtiyar Khalji, Aurangzeb and kept Assam sovereign. The Pallava empire ruled for 600 years. The Cholas ruled for 600 years. “The Mauryas ruled

The Satvahanas ruled for 500 years. The Guptas ruled for 400 years and (Gupta emperor) Samudragupta had for the first time visioned a united India and established an empire with the whole country. But there is no reference book on them,” he said. The home minister said reference books should be written on these empires and if they are written, “the history which we believe wrong will gradually fade away and truth will emerge”.
For this, he said, there is a need to start work by many people. “By kee ping aside comments, our glorious history should be kept in front of the public. When we make big efforts, then automatically the attempt of falsehood becomes small. So, we should pay more attention to make our efforts bigger,” he said. Shah said history is not written on the basis of victory or defeat, but on the basis of the outcome of any event. History is not made on the basis of the government
and books, truth is made on the basis of events, he said. “No one can stop us from writing the truth. We are now independent. We can write our own history,” he said. The home minister said it is a fact that some people have written history in such a way that it generates disappointment. “But India is such a country where disappointment can’t survive”. “It may be decades, 50 years or a hundred year but at the end it is the truth which will emerge victorious,” he said. Shah said some historians have written some books on a small scale but no one has done any comprehensive work on the history of the whole country and there is limited reference books. He said the government is also taking initiatives but when the government takes the initiatives for writing history, many difficulties come up. “When independent historians write history, only truth comes up and that is why our people should write book with facts and without making any comments,” he said.

Army Chief reviews security situation along LAC in Himachal & Uttarakhand
NEW DELHI, JUN 10 (PTI): Army Chief Gen Manoj Pande has carried out a comprehensive review of India’s security preparedness along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand. This is the first visit of Gen Pande to the sector after taking over as the Chief of the Indian Army on April 30. The Indian Army has been maintaining a strict vigil along the entire stretch of the LAC since the eastern Ladakh border row erupted in May 2020. The Army said Gen Pande expressed his satisfaction with the “rapid improvement of defensive posture and operational readiness of formations.” “The Chief of Army Staff, General Manoj Pande is currently on a three-day forward area visit to the LAC in the states of Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand,” the Army said on Friday. In his visits to the forward posts, Gen Pande has been briefed by local commanders about the prevailing situation along the borders. “Taking a first-hand assessment of the operational

It said Gen Pande is also reviewing the ongoing infrastructure and development work and the Army-citizen connect in the forward areas. “While interacting with the Commanders during his visit, the Army Chief emphasised the need for vigil and alertness along the borders,” the Army said in a statement. It said he appreciated the absorption of modern technology in undertaking
persistent surveillance. “The Chief of Army Staff, during his interaction with the troops deployed on the forward posts, appreciated their high morale and exhorted them to maintain the high standards of professional excellence,” the Army said. He also complimented the excellent synergy between the Army, CAPF (Central Armed Police Forces), civil administration and police towards operational effectiveness and sustainable development in the border areas, the Army said. The border standoff between the Indian and Chinese militaries erupted on May 5, 2020, following a violent clash in the Pangong lake areas.

Modi changed politics from graft to development: Nadda GORAKHPUR (UP), JUN 10 (PTI): BJP president J P Nadda on Friday said earlier dynasties, casteism and corruption were synonymous with politics but Prime Minister Narendra Modi has changed it to politics of development. Inaugurating a BJP regional party office in Gorakhpur on Friday, he said that under Modi the country made two Covid vaccines available to the people of India within a year of the pandemic. “Our party is proactive and pro-responsive. We don’t sit idle. While the country moves ahead under the leadership of Modi, Uttar Pradesh moves ahead under Yogi Adityanath,” Nadda said. “Prime Minister Modi has changed politics in the country. Earlier dynasts, casteism, and corruption were synonymous with politics. But Modi changed it to politics of development. That is why he gave the slogan of ‘Sabka Saaath, Sabka vikas’,” the BJP president said. Nadda recounted how important vaccines like
that against polio and encephalitis “took decades to come to India” but now under the leadership of PM Modi, the country “developed” two COVID-19 vaccines within a year. “The India of today develops its vaccines and provides it to other countries as well.” Hitting out at Samajwadi Party president Akhilesh Yadav, he said, “I want to remind you of an irresponsible leader. When vaccination started, Akhilesh Yadav termed the vaccine, ‘BJP ka tika’. He himself took the vaccine but advised you (the public) not to take it.” He said that of 72 BJP offices proposed to be built in Uttar Pradesh, 69 have already been completed. “It is the vision of the prime minister that the BJP must have a party office in every district of the country,” Nadda said. Remembering the BJP’s struggles in past, the party president urged young workers to “make use of libraries at BJP party offices and learn.”

Earlier, the NCPCR chief had asked the Uttar Pradesh Police to probe if children were engaged by “anti-social” elements in the recent communal violence in Kanpur.

agaland’s decision makers will have to take a call about charting the economic future of its people after much time has been wasted due to a penchant for emotive rhetoric which has clouded the vision for preparing a practical roadmap. Since 1992, this newspaper had commented on the issue of oil exploration and extraction on many occasions in this column and as news item. Nagaland has a substantial deposit of crude oil estimated at around 600 million tons besides natural gas. In 1972 the government of Nagaland permitted Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) Ltd. The ONGC had extracted at least ten times more than the quantity it ought to have done as trial basis which was around 1.5 million metric tonnes. Nagaland was paid Rs.33 crore as royalty in 1993. By 1994, all operations of ONGC were suspended after some Naga organisations opposed exploration of oil and natural resources on various grounds. Some however maintained that the consent of landowners was needed as they have the right as per Article 371(A)(a) clause(iv) ownership and transfer of land and its resources. The NPF government in 2012 took up the issue in the state assembly and adopted the Nagaland Petroleum and Natural Gas(NPNG) Regulation 2012. This was based on the premise that as people’s representatives, the members were empowered to decide as per Article 371(A). However, the UPA-II government shot down the attempt of the state to enact its own laws governing oil and natural gas operations. The Centre pointed out that parliament alone has authority to frame laws for oil operations as per the Entry 53 of List -1 of the Seventh Schedule and also the Mines and Minerals(Regulation and Development)Act 1957 which extensively invests mines and minerals as the occupied field of the union of India. The NPNG Rules 2012 as well as subsequent ‘selection’ of private oil firms for oil business courted more controversy. The Kohima Bench of Gauhati High Court issued a stay order on a PIL filed by the Lotha Hoho, against the permit awarded to Metropolitan Oil and Gas Private Limited (MoGPL),one of those awarded oil operating license. Much had been written in this newspaper about the issue and the controversial MoGPL which also figured in the assembly debates. Presently the state government appears to have accepted the BJP government’s stand over oil exploration when, in January this year Nagaland Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio said that Assam and Nagaland were ready for out court settlement over the several decades-old border dispute as well as share in royalty from petroleum from the disputed area. This was echoed in March this year, by Nagaland governor Prof Jagdish Mukhi, in his address to the 13th Nagaland Legislative Assembly. Mukhi, who is also Assam governor told members that Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma had positively indicated equal share of profits from proceeds of Petroleum and Oil exploration and extraction between the two states in sectors A, B & C in the Disputed Area Belt (DAB) area. The oil operations are to be carried out by the PSU, ONGC Ltd and this also attracts some attention. ONGC has its bases in Assam and has been in the news for ‘tapping oil’ from disputed borders claimed by Nagaland such as in Changpang etc and Geleki reserve forest. ONGC has an overwhelming number of officers and employees from Assam and acted against Nagaland’s interests. However, these have to be cleared after proper consultations with stakeholders and ensure the peace and prosperity go together.
DailyDevotion And After That What’s Next To Do?
…seek, and you will find… —Luke 11:9
Seek if you have not found. “You ask and do not receive, because you ask amiss…” (James 4:3). If you ask for things from life instead of from God, “you ask amiss”; that is, you ask out of your desire for self-fulfillment. The more you fulfill yourself the less you will seek God. “…seek, and you will find….” Get to work— narrow your focus and interests to this one thing. Have you ever sought God with your whole heart, or have you simply given Him a feeble cry after some emotionally painful experience? “… seek, [focus,] and you will find….” “Ho! Everyone who thirsts, come to the waters…” (Isaiah 55:1). Are you thirsty, or complacent and indifferent— so satisfied with your own experience that you want nothing more of God? Experience is a doorway, not a final goal. Beware of building your faith on experience, or your life will not ring true and will only sound the note of a critical spirit. Remember that you can never give another person what you have found, but you can cause him to have a desire for it. “…knock, and it will be opened to you” (Luke 11:9). “Draw near to God…” (James 4:8). Knock— the door is closed, and your heartbeat races as you knock. “Cleanse your hands…” (James 4:8). Knock a bit louder— you begin to find that you are dirty. “…purify your hearts…” (James 4:8). It is becoming even more personal— you are desperate and serious now— you will do anything. “Lament…” (James 4:9). Have you ever lamented, expressing your sorrow before God for the condition of your inner life? There is no thread of self-pity left, only the heart-rending difficulty and amazement which comes from seeing what kind of person you really are. “Humble yourselves…” (James 4:10). It is a humbling experience to knock at God’s door— you have to knock with the crucified thief. “…to him who knocks it will be opened” (Luke 11:10).

Time to forego religious hatred
or the past fortnight the largest minority in the country has been put at unease due to a controversy that is not political but religious in nature. The incident is related to controversial remarks made by some ambitious politicians, trying to get noticed by their party’s leadership for creating a surcharged and divisive atmosphere in the country on religious lines. The unpleasant remarks against the most venerated personality in the Islamic community affronted the Muslims not just in India but also globally. The establishment in a hurried response had to heed to the international outcry in a crisis mode. Instead of adopting a mature and sensible strategy to handle the crisis and assuage the hurt feelings of the largest minority community of the country, the media and politicians tried to portray these remarks as non-consequential and as a litmus test for the minority’s followers and refused to apologize till the courts stepped in. Common Muslim’s Unease Still worse, the controversy also exposed the common Muslim’s inability to explain their history in a logical and contextual manner. Everyone from the common Muslim to its reli-

gious leaders was mum, as they couldn’t counter the controversy in a contextual manner. Let’s try to analyse the controversy and what would have been a better strategy to handle the currently volatile situation and the response by the Muslim community. It all started by derogatory remarks made by two former spokespersons of the ruling-BJP party against Prophet Muhammad , the most venerated personality amongst Muslims, blaming that he married Hazrat Bibi Aisha (RA), who was only six-years old, when married and nine-years old when the marriage was consummated, while the Holy Prophet was in his 50s. Notwithstanding the age difference, as perceived by the current generation’s mindset, it is worth mentioning that when the marriage proposal was put forward to Hazrat Abu Bakr, by Hazrat Khoula, he pointed out that Aisha’s marriage was already fixed with the son of Muta’im bin Jubair. But when he talked to Muta’im bin Jubair, Muta’im said that since Abu Bakr has forsaken his ancestors’ religion, he couldn’t marry his son with Aisha. Abu Bakr then accepted the proposal brought by Hazrat Khoula. Historical context Before we analyse the response of the Muslim community and its leaders
ver the years, financial markets have grown used to expecting the unexpected. Almost any passage of time in the history of financial markets is replete with events which have taken market participants by surprise. However, it would be fair to say that 2020s have just taken this to an altogether different level. In a lighter vein, one could wonder how the first quarter of last few years has made it a habit of making a mockery of beginning-of-year forecasts. While 2020 was a year which began under the looming threat of geo-political tensions between US and Iran; by the end of the first quarter, the thing that had turned the world upside down was, after all, a virus. At the start of 2022, while all eyes were on the spread of Omicron; by the end of the first quarter, the event that actually shook everyone was a geopolitical one (Russia-Ukraine war). Indeed, one would want to turn back the clock or rather, the calendar, to the beginning of this year with a hope that diplomacy and good sense prevailed and the world avoided this human tragedy, still unfolding in Ukraine. While turning time back and forth can only be wishful thinking, it certainly does happen twice a year - in some countries. Yes, indeed, I am referring to ‘daylight saving time’, which basically involves the practice of setting ahead clock by an hour at the beginning of summer and setting it back by an hour at the beginning of winter in most western countries. Interestingly, while this idea was floated in the early twentieth century, it only took off during World War I as countries scrambled to save energy
W
to these remarks, let’s have a brief look at the current situation of girls and women in other religions and what is the minimum age prescribed in their scriptures. Myriam Francois-Cerrah in her article written for The Guardian in 2012 on the issue opines that western and now even India media base their criticism on a saying attributed to Bibi Aisha herself (Sahih Bukhari volume 5, book 58, number 3894), and the debate on this issue is further complicated by the fact that some Muslims believe this to be a historically accurate account, and indeed it is. But before leveling charges we should also analyse the reasoning or motive behind this action. She points out that, in seventh-century Arabia, adulthood was defined as the onset of puberty. (This much is true, and was also the case in Europe: five centuries after Prophet Muhammad’s, marriage to Aisha, 33-year-old King John of England married 12-year-old Isabella of Angouleme). Interestingly, of the many criticisms of Prophet Muhammad, made at the time by his opponents, none focused on Aisha’s age at marriage, as that was the norm during those days. At the age of 25 Prophet Muhammad married his first wife Khadija bint Khuwaylid, who was a widow
15 years older to him. This marriage lasted for 25 years. He married her to encourage widow remarriage and care for destitute women in the emerging Muslim society, which was not a usual practice in that age. After Bibi Khadija’s death in 619 CE, he married a total of 12 women over the remaining years of his life. All of Prophet Muhammad’s wives were widows, with the exception of Aisha. Italian Orientalist Laura Veccia Vaglieri in her book, “An Interpretation Of Islam” writes that Prophet Muhammad was a faithful husband to Bibi Khadija for 25 years, and did not marry another woman, except after her death. He at that time was 50 years old. He married each of his wives thereafter for a social or political purpose; such that he wanted to honour the pious women, or wanted the loyalty of certain tribes so that Islam would spread amongst them. All the wives Muhammad married were not virgin, nor were they young or beautiful. So how can anyone claim that he was a lustful man? Other religions’ views Hallett JP in her book “Fathers and daughters in Roman society in Rome” (1984), wrote that noble women in Rome or earlier Christianity were known to marry as young as 12 years
of age. The Encyclopaedia of Religion and Ethics mentions Manusmriti, in this regard explained by other authorities in (verses 9.8889), Gautama (18-21): “A girl should be given in marriage before puberty.” and Vasistha (17.70): “Out of fear of the appearance of the menses, let the father marry his daughter while she still runs about naked. For if she stays in the home after the age of puberty, sin falls on the father.” But this leads us to another issue to ponder. This relates to the physical and physiological status of our ancestors. Several scientific reports mention that our ancestors were much superior and stronger in physical health and structure to the current generation of Homo Sapiens, and thus the girls attained puberty much earlier than as of now. Even recently there were some medical reports mentioning that girls currently reach puberty at around 13, much earlier than our and previous generation. This whole episode teaches us to adopt a sincere and respectful attitude for different religions of the world in today’s global village based on tolerance and coexistence and respect for others’ religion, and avoid unfounded allegations. Instead these two people, though correctly

by making better use of daylight. This wasn’t the only new idea to take off in the aftermath of a war. For instance, widespread manufacturing of antibiotics, like penicillin in US, took off only during World War II. Stainless steel rose to prominence during World War I as the British military sought an alternative to other metals, which were prone to damage from heat and friction. While different forms of computers are used across all industries today, the world’s first large scale electronic computer was built during World War II. Rapid progress in radar technology during World War I paved the path for civil aviation industry to take off. This list goes on and on and includes wristwatches, synthetic rubber, Pilates etc. In fact, it is not just the military conflicts that have triggered innovations. The competitive spirit during the Cold War too led to rapid development of space technology which had a lasting impact on the world. Indeed, while wars do reflect the worst in humanity, the desperate circumstances surrounding them have historically triggered or kick-started many path-breaking innovations/developments, arising from ingenuity of the human mind. As the war drags on in Ukraine, there are jitters being felt across all walks of life. Scourge of inflation means that Central Banks have had to tighten monetary policies, even as global growth outlook is clouded by geo-political uncertainties. However, what’s worth remembering is that if one goes by history, the world will not only find a way to tide over this crisis but would also come up with game-
changing ideas along the way. Looking back at Covid and its repercussions, as things stand, next few years could actually define the course of history for a prolonged period of time. First few months of this ongoing conflict have already shown that going forward there could be less reliance on physical warfare and more on the economic one. This, in turn, could result in formation of newer economic blocs and change the course of globalisation as we know it. Supply chains disrupted due to the pandemic have been further strained owing to the conflict and countries around the world are increasingly averse to the idea of economic dependence on countries with divergent security interests and differing ideologies. In this regard, India stands out as one of the natural alternatives to fill the void left on the front of food security, by Russia and Ukraine, and in manufacturing, by the postpandemic China+1 tilt. Apart from the threat to food security, another major fallout from the war has been the threat to energy security. The sharp spike in energy prices has had a crippling effect on many economies. Consequently, this could compel everyone to rethink how energy is produced and consumed; and more importantly, lay emphasis on reduction of dependence on fossil fuels. This, in turn, could accelerate tailwinds for renewable energy at a time when concern over climate change is already making the world sweat. Goes without saying that this change will not happen overnight as the immediate focus will be on energy security instead of clean energy. For instance,
the recent power crisis has made India turn once again to coal. Notwithstanding the recent softening of commodity prices; years of underinvestment may keep prices structurally elevated. Higher commodity prices, energy transition, supply chain re-alignment, along with the political desire for higher defence spending, by almost every country, could trigger a significant capex push. In a side story of sorts, the fate of US dollar has become the cynosure of all eyes in the world of finance. Recent turn of events, coupled with the US’s declining share in global trade and changing geo-political equations have raised apprehension about dollar’s hegemony. However, the US dollar has benefitted from the apparent lack of alternative at this point in time. The relative preference of most countries to politically align with US, instead of an alternative like China, along with relative ease of access to American capital markets and a hawkish US Fed have aided the dollar’s cause. All said and done, one may have to “reserve” one’s judgement on the world’s reserve currency for now. India’s sizeable forex reserves should help stave off significant threat to rupee stability. While India won’t remain insulated from global developments, India continues to remain better positioned as compared to other emerging markets at this point. Rapid digitalisation, strong tax buoyancy (growth in tax collections nearly double that of Nominal GDP growth for FY22), Services exports at record high (FY22), healthy balance sheets of corporates and banking sector, policy reforms, formalisation of

mentioned the fact, but they made the remarks in such a derogatory and foul language that the Muslims all across the world were bound to feel hurt and demand action against them. First, these people should have not adopted such an incourteous behaviour and secondly, the Muslims should have seen through their game that by using derogatory and foul language, these fringe elements were trying to provoke them and reap political benefit by unsettling them and gain political mileage, at their cost. Also these offenders didn’t anticipate the strong international condemnation. Additionally, since the day this controversy started no Muslim leader worth his salt has spoken candidly or correctly against these derogatory remarks. Even Muslim members of most political parties kept mum, except two regional political parties and one individual leader. This teaches us yet again the lesson to be proactive and logic-oriented in our response instead of just being emotional. Asad Mirza (The writer is a political commentator based in New Delhi. economy and push for privatisation & capex hold India in good stead. On the flipside, key risks to watch out for happen to be the spike in commodity prices (particularly oil), impact of tightening global liquidity and increase in food and fertiliser subsidy bill. For Indian equities, strong retail participation (63 per cent increase in demat accounts in FY22) and robust Mutual Fund flows have cushioned the downside from recent FPI selling spree. However, it’s equally noteworthy how last couple of years have been a baptism by fire for investors, as sharp gyrations in financial markets and numerous unforeseen events have kept investors on toes. Considering rapidly evolving geo-political landscape, change in course of globalisation; and with Central Banks retreating into their role of reining in inflationary expectations instead of doing ‘whatever it takes’ to support asset markets, volatility is likely to remain elevated. Investors’ equanimity and patience will continue to be tested in the foreseeable future but don’t we know from history that the formula for wealth creation equates sound investment + time + patience. In a world where new geo-political alliances are being formed and existing ones are being tested; sound financial plan and prudent asset allocation still continue to remain the best allies for investors to counter the formidable foe of volatility in financial markets. The efforts reflects on the health of women and children today. Health indicators continue to improve. Gujarat ranks first in the Policy Commission’s third sustainable goal list. “When I was the Chief Minister, we started the “Mukhyamantri Amrutam
Yojana” by which poor families get assistance of Rs 2 lakh. More than 40 lakh poor patients of Gujarat are benefited. We launched Ayushyaman Bharat on lines of “Amrutam Yojna”. It has helped the tribals, Dalits, the deprived as well as the women. They have received Rs 7,000 crore benefit so far.” In the last 20 years, Gujarat Health Centres has achieved many new milestones. Work has been done at every level. As many as 600 Din Dayal Aushadhalays have been set up in the cities and 14 lakh poor women benefitted from the “Chiranjeevi scheme”.
AHMEDABAD, JUN 10 (PTI): Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday inaugurated the headquarters of the Indian Space Promotion and Authorisation Centre (IN-SPACe) here, set up to promote private investment and innovation in the space sector. As in Information Technology, he hopes that Indian firms will emerge as leaders in the global space sector too, he said. Earlier, the space sector was closed to private companies as “they could only be vendors”, but his government opened it up by bringing in reforms, Modi said. “Big ideas can only make big winners. We have removed all restrictions by bringing reforms in the space sector,” he said. IN-SPACe will support private industry and begin the process of “making winners in the space sector,” the prime minister further said. “I am hopeful that like in the IT sector, our industry will also take the lead in the global space sector,” he said. “ To d ay o n s o c i a l media, if youths have to share something important, they will write `watch this space’. IN-SPACe has the
potential to revolutionise the space industry. So I would say ‘watch this space’. INSPACe is for space, pace and creating ace in space industry,” Modi said. The government is also working on a new space policy which will provide ease of doing business in the sector, he said. “India’s space programme has been, in a way, the biggest identity of `Atmanirbhar Bharat’. When this programme gets the strength of the Indian private sector, you can imagine how much it will increase its strength,” the prime minister said. In the past, the country’s youth did not get the opportunity to work in the space sector and it was our misfortune that “the difference between regulation and restriction was forgotten,” he said. “Indian youth carry with them innovation, energy and spirit....Their risktaking capacity is also very high. If any youth wants to innovate, can we say, this can only be done by government facilities?....But in our country, this was the situation in many sectors,” the prime minister said.
CHANDIGARH, JUN 10 ( AGENCIES): The first of the eight gunmen believed to have shot and killed Punjabi singer Sidhu Moose Wala has been arrested, the police said on Friday, reports NDTV. Harkamal Ranu, a resident of Bathinda, was handed over to the police, his family members claimed. This is the tenth arrest in the case. The last two arrests were that of a gangster identified as Siddhesh Hiraman Kamble alias Mahakal and a man who pretended to be a fan and took a selfie with Moose Wala before his killing. The suspects have been arrested for providing logistical support, conducting recce, and harbouring the singer’s killers. Among the other shooters identified are Sandeep Singh, alias Kekda, of Sirsa, Haryana; Manpreet Singh, alias Manna, of Talwandi Sabo, Bathinda; and Manpreet Bhau of Dhaipai, Faridkot. trict on May 29, a day after the Punjab government curtailed his security cover. His death shocked fans at home and in Punjabi communities from Canada to Britain. Moose Wala -- whose real name is Shubhdeep Singh Sidhu -- rose to fame with catchy songs that attacked rival rappers and politicians, portraying him as a man who fought for his community’s pride, delivered justice and gunned down enemies. Moose Wala was a big star not just in India but also abroad, especially in Canada and Britain -home to large Punjabiorigin communities. However, he was often
criticised for promoting gun culture through his music videos, in which he regularly posed with firearms. Moose Wala’s murder has also put the spotlight on the dark underbelly of Punjab, a major transit route for drugs entering India from Afghanistan and Pakistan. Many link the narcotics trade -- mostly heroin and opium -- to an uptick in gang-related violence and the use of illegal arms in the state. According to media reports, some of the dozens of gangs active in Punjab have been demanding protection money from rappers and even buying into music companies.

NEW DELHI, JUNE 10 (IANS): Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Friday said that Minister Satyendar Jain was taken to a hospital the previous day after a picture of the arrested Minister went viral. Kejriwal, however, refused to make any comment on Jain. In the viral picture that went viral on Thursday, Satyendar Jain can be seen in a car with what appears to be blood on his face. He is currently in the custody of the Enforcement Directorate in a money laundering case. “He is in ED custody and I cannot say much since we have no direct contact. I am in no position to make any comment on
this. He was taken to hospital yesterday. Whatever happened in the hospital... when he was a little better, he was taken back,” Delhi Chief Minister said. Kejriwal was inspecting the trees transplanted at a site in Mayur Vihar. He said that the government’s tree transplantation policy has helped prevent a dip in the national capital’s green cover despite a large number of development projects being undertaken in the city. “Delhi’s green cover should have decreased to 15-16 per cent considering the development works being undertaken, but the Tree Transplantation Policy brought in October 2020 prevented it,” he said after the inspection.
and its agencies, including the police and Narcotics Department should therefore be on high alert, it emphasised. NPP warned that Nagaland would become the next drug capital of the country soon if the government, police, civil city organisations, church bodies and common people did not open their eyes to the menace and take drastic measures against these notorious activities. It suggested that the colonies, wards and villages of various districts should devise their own strategies for curbing such illegal activities by setting up local vigilance committees. It said the state government should also conduct regular awareness camps on this pertinent issue in all the districts so that the public was made aware about their roles and responsibilities.
AHMEDABAD, JUN 10 (PTI): Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday inaugurated the headquarters of the Indian Space Promotion and Authorisation Centre (IN-SPACe), set up to promote private investment and innovation in the space sector. The party said it was high time to give it a serious thought and mete out harshest punishment possible to those individuals and organisations that were destroying the society and next generation for easy money. Despite concrete and sufficient evidences against these kingpins, the party alleged that they were able to escape the clutches of law as they had multifarious connections. The State government

DIMAPUR, JUN 10 (NPN): NPP State unit has expressed deep concern over the rising cases of drugs and tobacco addiction, especially among the youngsters, in Nagaland. Claiming that the State had become a haven for drug peddlers and addicts like Punjab in the past, the party, in a press release , said many youth had either ruined their lives or were on the verge of complete addiction due to this menace, which had remained unchecked for many years despite numerous concerns expressed by NGOs and other forums, including Kripa Foundation and Federation of Indian NGOs for Prevention of Drugs Abuse – Nagaland Chapter. I have come here to give my statement,” said Singh who was accompanied by a number of party colleagues, including state minister Ram Surat Rai, Vaishali MP Veena Devi and former state minister Suresh Sharma. Altogether 23 BJP leaders, named in the case, appeared before the court of judge Vikas Mishra. Notably, on Wednesday, Kumar was asked about his views on a religious conversion law, which the BJP has been in favor of. Kumar, whose JD(U) is currently the largest ally of the BJP in the country, had asserted that such a law was not required in Bihar where people of all religious communities co-existed in peace. Singh’s views, diametri-
cally opposite to that of the Bihar CM who has remained true to his socialist roots notwithstanding decadesold ties with the BJP, were echoed by Rakesh Sinha, BJP’s Rajya Sabha MP and RSS thinker who was asked about religious conversions in Patna. “There is no doubt that people get pressurised, financially and psychologically, to give up their faith and convert to another religion. This goes against the constitutional right to freedom of religion. The Narendra Modi government must not let this go on and bring in an anti-proselytisation law,” Sinha told reporters. The academic-turnedpolitician also said that Hindus be declared a “global minority” by the United Nations, since the community was not in a majority anywhere except India and Nepal. “If the UN does not agree to do so, it will be construed that the international body has double standards,” said Sinha, alluding to the resolution on Islamophobia Day passed earlier this year which was opposed by India.

MUZAFFARPUR/PATNA, JUNE 10 (PTI): Union minister Giriraj Singh on Friday asserted that there was a need for an anti-conversion law that was applicable to the entire country. The firebrand BJP leader, who is also considered a detractor of Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, expressed his views barely a couple of days after the latter had ruled out the need for any such legislation in the state. “There should be a law against ‘dharmantaran’ (religious proselytisation) across the country,” quipped Singh when he was approached by journalists with a query on the need for an anti-conversion legislation. The Union minister, who represents Begusarai in the Lok Sabha, was in the north Bihar town of Muzaffarpur in connection with a case filed against him way back in 2014, before the BJP had come to power at the Centre. During a ‘Bharat bandh’ called by the BJP, Singh, in addition to many BJP leaders, was booked for blocking railway traffic. “The false case has been transferred from the

The hospital has been built in memory of Nirali, the granddaughter of L&T Group chairman Anil Nayak, who died of cancer at the age of two-and-a-half years. “Three years ago, I had the opportunity of laying the foundation stone for a cancer hospital here. It is being inaugurated today. This is a sentimental tribute to Nirali, whom we lost much before time. The hospital shows the determination of Nirali’s family that no one should face a similar trauma. People of Navsari and surrounding districts will have an access to emergency treatment.” To empower the poor, it was necessary to make health care accessible, he said adding: “We have been working with a holistic approach to improve the health sector for the last eight years. We have emphasised on good nutrition, clean life-

Putin given ‘urgent medical help’ after Trump accused of ‘attempted coup’ falling ill while talking to military chiefs
WASHINGTON, JUN 10 (AP): The House panel investigating the January 6 insurrection at the US Capitol laid the blame firmly on Donald Trump on Thursday night, saying the assault was hardly spontaneous but an “attempted coup” and a direct result of the defeated president’s effort to overturn the 2020 election. With a never-beforeseen 12-minute video of extremist groups leading the deadly siege and startling testimony from Trump’s most inner circle, the 1/6 committee provided gripping detail in contending that Trump’s repeated lies about election fraud and his public effort to stop Joe Biden’s victory led to the attack and imperiled American democracy. “Democracy remains in danger,” said Rep. Bennie Thompson, D-Miss., chairman of the panel, during the hearing, timed for prime time to reach as many Americans as possible. “January 6 was the culmination of an attempted coup, a brazen attempt, as one rioter put it shortly after January 6, to overthrow the
Video of former President Donald Trump is shown at the House committee public hearing in Washington on Thursday. government,” Thompson said. “The violence was no accident.” The hearings may not change Americans’ views on the Capitol attack, but the panel’s investigation is intended to stand as its public record. Ahead of this fall’s midterm elections, and with Trump considering another White House run, the com-
mittee’s final report aims to account for the most violent attack on the Capitol since 1814, and to ensure such an attack never happens again. Testimony showed on Thursday how Trump desperately clung to his own false claims of election fraud, beckoning supporters to the Capitol on January 6 when Congress would cer-
tify the results, despite those around him insisting Biden had won the election. In a previously unseen video clip, the panel played a quip from former Attorney General Bill Barr who testified that he told Trump the claims of a rigged election were “bull——.” In another, the former president’s daughter, Ivanka
Trump, testified to the committee that she respected Barr’s view that there was no election fraud. “I accepted what he said.” Others showed leaders of the extremist Oath Keepers and Proud Boys preparing to storm the Capitol to stand up for Trump. One rioter after another told the committee they came to the Capitol because Trump asked them to. “ P r e s i d e n t Tr u m p summoned a violent mob,” said Rep. Liz Cheney, RWyo., the panel’s vice chair who took the lead for much of the hearing. “When a president fails to take the steps necessary to preserve our union — or worse, causes a constitutional crisis — we’re in a moment of maximum danger for our republic.” There was an audible gasp in the hearing room when Cheney read an account that said when Trump was told the Capitol mob was chanting for Vice President Mike Pence to be hanged for refusing to block the election results.Trump responded that maybe they were right, that he “deserves it”.

Straw dolls with Putin’s face found nailed on sacred tree in Japan
Dolls made of straw that bear the face of Russian President Vladimir Putin along with notes calling for his execution have been found hammered into a sacred castanopsis tree with two long nails in Japan’s Chiba prefecture, east of Tokyo. In Japanese these dolls are called “wara ningyo” dolls and are culturally used to ward off evil. They also have been used as part of supernatural rituals, with the dolls themselves representing the curse. A police investigation has been launched to figure out who these people are
who have stuck these dolls onto a sacred tree. According to Newsweek, one straw doll was found at Mikazuki Shrine in Matsudo hammered with two long nails through the areas representing the doll’s chest and head. It carried a note that read: “Vladimir Putin, born 7 October 1952. Pray for his extermination.” According to a report in Japanese daily newspaper The Mainichi, locals are not happy about the desecration of sacred trees. According to the publication, local residents stated that they wanted “the sacred trees to be treated with respect,” and also pointing out that “shrines are not a place to put curses on people.”

KIEV, JUN 10 (IANS): An aide to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has said that the country is losing upto 200 troops a day while fighting on the front line with Russian forces. According to the aide Mykhaylo Podolyak, hundreds of Ukrainian troops are under relentless bombardment as Russian forces attempt to take control of the whole of eastern Donbas region, the BBC reported on Friday. While reiterating that Ukraine still requires Western artillery, he said: “The Russian forces have thrown pretty much everything non-nuclear at the front and that includes heavy artillery, multiple rocket launch systems and aviation.” Podolyak said “complete lack of parity” between the two rival armies was the reason for Ukraine’s heavy casualty rate. He also stressed that peace talks between Kiev and Moscow can resume if Russia surrendered the territory it has gained since it launched the invasion on February 24.

TS have released their anthology album ‘Proof ’, including the new single ‘Yet To Come (The Most Beautiful Moment)’. The K-Pop megastars - comprising RM, Jin, JHope, V, Suga, Jimin and Jungkook - have consolidated the past nine years of their career into a 48-track, three-disc compilation, including all their hits and previously unheard demo versions of their tracks as a group and solo. The likes of ‘ON’, ‘Boy with Luv’ featuring
Halsey, ‘Butter’ and ‘Dynamite’ are all included, plus three new songs, ‘Yet To Come’, ‘For Youth’ and ‘Run BTS’. The septet paid careful consideration to the order of the tracks as it runs like a biography. RM said: “I always get nervous when we release a new song for the first time. I hope many people like it. Jin said: “Because ‘Proof ’ is an album that encapsulates BTS’ history, it keeps bringing to mind different memories from the past nine years. I myself
will be listening to it often. Suga commented: “Because it’s an album that encapsulates BTS’s history, we paid careful attention to how the songs were organised on the album. If you listen to the album starting from the first track, there’ll be a certain fun in listening to it [in order]. J-Hope said: “Because it’s our first time releasing an album in a long while, I’m excited and overjoyed. I want to enjoy [the album] together with our fans as quickly as possible”. (Contactmusic)
eart Attack’ hitmaker Demi Lovato has released a brutally honest new single titled ‘Skin of My Teeth’, which sees the Grammynominated singer embracing a pop-punk sound and opening up about their struggle with addiction, reports ‘Variety’. The guitar-heavy track bears some sonic resemblance to Hole’s ‘Celebrity Skin’ and gives a grunge twist to the new era of poppunk that has bubbled up in recent years, with Lovato’s powerhouse vocals urgently conveying their most upfront lyricism yet. Speaking about the experience of working on the track, Lovato said in a statement accessed by ‘Variety’, “The process of making this album has been the most fulfilling yet, and I’m grateful to my fans and collaborators for being on this journey with me.” “Never have I been more sure of myself and my music, and this record speaks that for itself. To my Lovatics who have been

rocking out with me since the beginning and those who are just now coming along for the ride, thank you. This record is for you,” she added. Lovato experienced a near-fatal opioid overdose in July 2018, which they discussed at length in the 2021 YouTube docuseries ‘Demi Lovato: Dancing With the Devil’. In the documentary, Lovato explained that they had become “California sober”, which means still using certain substances -typically alcohol and weed -- in moderation. (IANS)
uitarist Jeff Beck and Hollywood star Johnny Depp have announced a joint album that’s on the way, after Beck unofficially put word of it out to a concert audience last week, and the pair are heralding it with a video that was released Thursday, for a Depp-penned original song, ‘This Is a Song for Miss Hedy Lamarr’. The homage to the screen siren Lamarr (who died in 2000 at age 85) is one of two songs written by Depp for the project, the other one being ‘Sad Motherf****n’ Parade’, reports ‘Variety’. These freshly penned originals are the outliers on ‘18’, an album otherwise made up of cover songs, some of them sung by Depp, some in fully instrumental form. It’ll be out via the Rhino label on CD and digital platforms July 15. The lyrics for the new song are bound to undergo scrutiny in light of Depp’s successful lawsuit against
former wife Amber Heard, although the composition is said to be several years old. Beck said in a statement that he was “blown away” when Depp first played the ‘Hedy Lamarr’ song for him prior to their starting in on recording the project three years ago. “That song is one of the reasons I asked him to
make an album with me,” said Beck. Among Depp’s lyrics for the song, which seem to paint the screen star of the ‘30s, ‘40s and ‘50s as a victim of fame and expectations: “This is a song for Miss Hedy Lamarr / Erased by the world that made her a star, I won’t believe in humans anymore.” (IANS)

Kubo and Ritsu Doan created space with a quickfire passing exchange, and right back Yamane swept the ball home with a leftfoot shot. Ghana defender Andrew Kyere Yiadom had a lucky escape from injury when Japan’s Hiroki Ito sent him flying upside down with a wayward challenge. Ghana equalised against the run of play in the 44th minute when Yamane gave the ball away to Crystal Palace striker Jordan Ayew, who drilled it past goalkeeper Eiji Kawashima. Japan made sure the visitors’ lead was shortlived, however, as Mitoma struck in first-half injury time with a cross that made it all the way in for a goal. Kubo made the game safe for Japan in the second half, before substitute Maeda added a fourth goal with a close-range finish.

FIFA rules in Ecuador’s favour ECUADOR TO PLAY IN QATAR AFTER FIFA DISMISSES CHILE COMPLAINT
G E N E VA , J U N 1 0 (AGENCIES): Ecuador kept its place at the World Cup on Friday when a FIFA legal ruling rejected a complaint by Chile about an alleged ineligible player. FIFA said its disciplinary committee closed the proceedings in the claim that Ecuador defender Byron Castillo, who played in eight qualifying games, was ineligible. Chile’s soccer federation claimed to have documents proving Castillo is actually Colombian. Ecuador risked forfeiting all eight games as 3-0 losses and dropping from fourth place in the South American qualifying group that ended in March. Chile would have risen to fourth in the standings and claimed the last automatic qualification place. “After analyzing the submissions of all parties concerned and considering all elements brought before it, the FIFA disciplinary committee has decided to close the proceedings initiated against the (Ecuador soccer federation),” FIFA

The legal process could take at least several weeks, pushing the uncertainty closer to the tournament being played in Qatar from Nov. 21 to Dec. 18. The World Cup draw
was made April 1 and Ecuador was drawn in a group with host Qatar, the Netherlands and Senegal. Ecuador and Chile both last played at the World Cup in 2014 hosted by Brazil. LO N D O N, J U N 1 0 (AGENCIES): Liverpool forward Mohamed Salah and Chelsea women’s striker Sam Kerr both achieved a notable double on Thursday as they were named the player of the year by England’s Professional Footballers Association after they each won corresponding awards from sportswriters.
Salah topped a poll of his fellow players ahead of Belgian star Kevin De Bruyne, who had won for the previous two years and was again a key member of the Manchester City team which took the Premier League title ahead of Liverpool by just a single point. Salah was named PFA player of the year for a sec-
ond time, having previously won in 2018, after a season where Liverpool lifted both the League Cup and FA Cup, while also getting to the Champions League final where they lost to Real Madrid. Egypt striker Salah finished as the Premier League’s joint top-scorer alongside Tottenham’s Son Heung-min with 23 goals. “It’s a great honour to win a trophy, individual or collective,” Salah said. The 29-year-old, who has confirmed he will see out his contract at Liverpool next season while remaining non-committal on his future at Anfield beyond 2023, added: “This one is a really good one to win, especially because it’s voted by players.”
