Covid booster dose can be taken after 9 months from 2nd jab: ICMR
The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) informed a Parliamentary committee that additional Covid dose should be taken after nine months of full vaccination. While in a recent study, a team of ICMR scientists suggested the use of the Covishield Covid-19 vaccine as a booster shot, noting a reduction in efficacy against the Delta derivatives. "Our findings suggest that Covishield vaccine was able to neutralize Delta derivatives and prevent serious disease and fatality among breakthrough cases. A booster dose vaccination of Covid-19 naïve vaccinees would achieve a protective immune response to fight against emerging SARS-CoV-2 variants," an excerpt from the paper reads. to 32. Maharashtra reported seven new cases of Omicron, three from Mumbai and four from Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation. Of the seven new Omicron patients, four were fully vaccinated and one had received a single dose of the coronavirus vaccine, the release said. One adult patient was not vaccinated, while another is a three-and-halfyear-old child and thus not eligible for inoculation. Four
of the new patients are asymptomatic while three have only mild symptoms. Further, the number of Omicron cases in Gujarat rose to three after two relatives of the infected 72-yearold man from Jamnagar tested positive on Friday. The 72-year-old had returned from Zimbabwe and tested positive for Omicron. The locality in which they live has already been declared a containment zone.

Eerie calm in Oting a week after killing by security forces OTING, DEC 10 (PTI): There is an eerie calm in Oting village in Mon district, where despite the approaching Christmas there are no buntings or traditional decorations. Visitors to this remote hilly place are instead greeted with the sight of a lone white banner flapping in the air in memory of the13 hapless young mine workers who fell victim to bullets sprayed at them by security forces a week ago in a botched counter insurgency operation. The calm speaks of the shock, sorrow and tension after the brutal killing and villagers, yet to come to grips with the tragedy, have put restrictions on accessing the site or visitors speaking to the bereaved families since the past two days. What strikes a visitor in this hour of grief is the famed Naga hospitality. A community kitchen has been opened since the incident and all visitors ranging from government officers, the police, tribes-
men and journalists are offered a meal. “It is a massive tragedy. We appreciate the concern shown by everyone. We hope we get justice for the bereaved families,” an elderly inhabitant of the village told PTI on Friday. He was, however, firm on visitors not being allowed to meet the victims’ families. “The people coming from outside insist on meeting them. They make the families recount the horror over and over again. We decided to put a stop to it as there is no point in making them relive the painful loss,” he said. Another villager, who identified himself at Kheatwang Konyak, tried to explain that the villagers were not against people coming to Oting at this time. “We are coordinating with the visitors and providing whatever information or help they need. Earlier, visitors moved around alone, now we are only streamlining it”. He adds, “We lost innocent lives in the incident.
Centre deliberately misinformed on Oting killing: KU CSOs SARFAESI Act comes into force DIMAPUR, DEC 10 (NPN): Konyak Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) have condemned the military intelligence agency(s) for allegedly having deliberately misinformed the Central government and misrepresenting facts pertaining to the December 4 Oting massacre. They have also demanded that the Government of India (GoI) and state’s Special Investigation Team (SIT) book person(s) responsible for the massacre and award befitting punishment. In a joint statement by Konyak Union president
S Howing; Konyak Students’ Union president Noklem Konyak and president of Konyak Nyupuh Sheko Khung Ponglem, appealed to chief ministers and student and youth organisations of the North-eastern States affected by Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA), 1958 to stand united for the cause of fighting the draconian law that was affecting peace in the region. The CSOs also clarified that restrictions on media fraternity from different parts of the country had been put in place owing to misinterpretation of facts and due to
politicisation of the incident. As the voice of the people, the CSOs urged upon the media not to misinform and politicise the tragedy, but to relay the truth to rest of the country and world. The CSOs also appealed to DC Mon for immediate allocation of a site for construction of a Genocide Memorial Park for victims of both Mon and Oting at Assam Rifles Camp, Mon. They also urged upon the SIT to conduct a fair investigation of the incident and submit the report to the government before December 25. The CSOs also expressed
the belief that Christmas will be celebrated with justice being delivered and pave the way for a peaceful atmosphere during celebrations and for future lives ahead. The CSOs informed that they will meet family members of the victims of December 4 and 5 incidents at Oting, Jakphang and Chi villages on Saturday. They have also invited media to the press conference scheduled on Saturday at 12 noon at KU office in order to disseminate clear information on the events that unfolded during that horrific incident.
DIMAPUR, DEC 10 (NPN): State government on Friday notified the implementation of the Securitisation and Reconstruction of Financial Assets and Enforcement of Security Interest (SARFAESI) Act, 2002 in Nagaland with effect from the date of this notification. The notification, issued by the Finance department (general branch), specified secured assets taken over by banks and financing institutions could be sold only to indigenous inhabitants of Nagaland in accordance with provisions of the Nagaland Land and Revenue Regulations (Amendment) Act, 2002. It may be mentioned that the Nagaland Assembly on November 26 last adopted a government resolution for streamlining the SARFAESI Act 2002 in the state which allows banks to auction properties of defaulters only to local people to recover loans. The resolution was moved by chief minister Neiphiu Rio, who also holds the finance portfolio.
Families have been shattered. God knows when we can move on from such a tragedy.” When asked, Apo and Alem, who are among the girls of the village who have volunteered to work at the kitchen, said: “We have been busy helping. The impact of our loss as a community is yet to sink in”. Later, Kheatwang, who accompanied this correspondent to the incident site, which is about 10 km from the village, said that the central government's claim that the youths were gunned down as their pickup van did not stop at check points and that they tried to flee is not acceptable to the villagers. He pointed to the road, which is practically a mud track connecting the village to the incident site and barely wide enough to allow the passage of a single vehicle. “You can see for yourself. It is not possible for any vehicle to go beyond 10-20 km per hour on this road.” (Cont’d on p-8)

ZLSU demands repeal of AFSPA
DIMAPUR: Expressing deep anguish over the Oting massacre on December 4, Zeliang Students Union Nagaland (ZLSU) has strongly demanded for repeal of Armed Force (Special Power) Act, 1958 (AFSPA). In a press release, ZLSU president Kingsalt Hegwang and general secretary, Sanlakbo Namdau condemned “the most despicable action of the Indian security personnel who targeted the innocent civilians in the most unprofessional manner.” It also condemned the “political leaders, some media houses, individuals and organisations who resorted to twisting the incident in favour of the armed forces without ascertaining the actual facts from the ground”. Appealing to the
centre and the state government to ensure speedy justice to the victims without fear and favour, ZLSU said it was more than obvious that AFSPA had been “a wicked tool for the many unrighteous officers and jawans” to unleash terror among the citizens of North East India. It stated that many more instances of human rights abuse had gone unreported and those reported “never saw the light of justice for the innocent victims, all under the suppression of AFSPA”. “AFSPA has done more damage than good to the image of the Indian armed forces and is a complete failure to control the so-called insurgent movements in the North East”, the union stated. While stating that it had alienated the people of the region “from
joining the mainstream and had been a factor for many affected youth to join the opposing forces”, the union said that the Nagas yearned to live in peace and progress “in the mainstream” like any other progressive society in other parts of world, “yet under the guise of AFSPA, the Indian armed forces had been pushing us back, time and again”. ZLSU demanded immediate removal of AFSPA which it said would also ensure justice to the victims of its Konyak Naga brethren who were killed with no rhyme and reason. “Under the regime of AFSPA, it is a matter of fact that justice will never be delivered as in the past many incidences of human rights violation in our land by the armed forces”, it further stated.

GUWAHATI, DEC 10 (PTI): The Gauhati High High Court has quashed all orders of the lower court in a case against Rajya Sabha MP Subramanian Swamy for an alleged hate speech in Assam in 2015. Justice Manish Choudhury in an order passed on Thursday quashed all orders of the lower court for criminal proceedings against Swamy, who had filed a petition seeking the same. The judge observed that as the complaint did not make out any offence either under Section 153, IPC (rioting) or under Section 298, IPC (wounding religious sentiments) the criminal proceeding is quashed.
Subramanian Swamy
“As the criminal prosecution against the petitioner for the offences under Section 153A (promoting disharmony) and Section 295A (outraging religious feelings) of the Penal Code has been launched without any sanction, such criminal prosecution is held to be illegal. The continuance of the criminal proceeding ... would amount to abuse of
the process of the Court,” he ruled. The case against Swamy was filed before the chief judicial magistrate at Karimganj on March 17, 2015 alleging that he had made some “derogatory, unconstitutional and provocative” statements against a particular religion while interacting with the media in Guwahati on March 14, 2015. Subsequently, the additional chief judicial magistrate of Karimganj took cognisance of the complaint and issued summons to Swamy on March 18 that year and subsequently a non-bailable warrant of arrest was issued against him on June 1, 2015.

The Prime Minister made the remarks while speaking at a programme, ‘Summit for Democracy’, hosted by US President Joe Biden. “The structural features like multi-party elections, independent judiciary, and free media - are important instruments of democracy. However, the basic strength of democracy is the spirit and ethos that lie within our citizens and our societies. Democracy is not only of the people, by the people, for the people but also with the people, within the people,” the Prime Minister said. Modi also pointed out
that “different parts of the world have followed different paths of democratic development and there is much we can learn from each other”. “We all need to constantly improve our democratic practices and systems. And, we all need to continuously enhance inclusion, transparency, human dignity, responsive grievance redressal and decentralisation of power,” he said. Modi also mentioned that “in this context, today’s assembly provides a timely platform for furthering cooperation among democracies”. “India would be happy to share its expertise in holding free and fair elections, and in enhancing transparency in all areas of governance through innovative digital solutions.
We must also jointly shape global norms for emerging technologies like social media and crypto-currencies, so that they are used to empower democracy, not to undermine it,” he said. He emphasised that by working together, democracies can meet the aspirations of our citizens and celebrate the democratic spirit of humanity and India stands ready to join fellow democracies in this noble endeavour. “It is a story of unprecedented socio-economic inclusion in all spheres. It is a story of constant improvements in health, education, and human well-being at an un-imaginable scale. The India story has one clear message to the world. That democracy can deliver, that democracy has delivered, and that democracy will continue to deliver,” he said.
‘Smiling Send-Off’: Courageous wife of crash victim Brigadier LS Lidder
NEW DELHI, DEC 10 ( AGENCIES): “We must give him a good farewell... a smiling send-off ” - Brigadier Lakhwinder Singh Lidder’s wife, Geetika Lidder, said this morning as she and her 16-year-old daughter, Aashna, said goodbye to the senior Army officer at Delhi’s Brar Square Crematorium, reports NDTV. Mournful visuals showed Mrs Lidder in tears kneeling by the head of her husband’s coffin, which was draped with the national flag and decked with flowers. Aashna was by her mother’s side, fighting back tears of her own as she let a handful of rose petals fall through her fingers and on to her father’s coffin. “He was larger than life... everybody knows that. You can see how many came to say goodbye. He had a wonderful personality... was loved by everyone,” Mrs Lidder, her voice wracked with grief, said. “ I a m a s o l d i e r ’s wife...” she said, displaying immeasurable bravery on so harrowing a day.

“There is more sadness than pride... life now is very long but... whatever. If this is what God wants, we will live with this loss. But this is not the way we wanted him back,” she said, choking back tears. “If it was not meant to be... I don’t know. But my child will miss him. He was a very good father.” Aashna Lidder, calm and composed in the face of this tragedy, was with her mother at the crematorium in Delhi Cantonment earlier today, where she comforted her mother as she grieved. “I am going to be 17. So he was with me for 17 years... we will go ahead with happy memories. It’s
a national loss. My father was a hero, my best friend. Maybe it was destined and better things will come our way. He was my biggest motivator,” she said then. Earlier Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, NSA Ajit Doval and Haryana Chief Minister ML Khattar were among those to pay their respects. A long line of military officials, including the Chiefs of Staff of the Army, Navy and Air Force, also paid tribute, marching in stoic sequence to lay a wreath at his feet. Brigadier Lidder, 52, was one of the 13 who died in Wednesday’s horrific chopper crash in Tamil Nadu’s Nilgiri Hills. The crash also claimed the lives of Chief of Defence Staff General Bipin Rawat, his wife, Madhulika Rawat, and nine other Air Force personnel. There is only one survivor from the chopper crash - Group Captain Varun Singh - is being treated for severe burn injuries at the Air Force’s Command Hospital in Bengaluru.
NEW DELHI, DEC 10 (IANS): Union Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya on Friday said out of the total 157 newly approved medical colleges in the country’s backward areas, only 70 institutes have become functional till date. “Health is a state subject, and primary responsibility to ensure availability of public health facilities lies with the state government. However, the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare administers a Centrally Sponsored Scheme for ‘Establishment of new Medical Colleges attached with existing district and referral hospitals’ with preference to under-served areas and aspirational districts where there is no existing government or private medical college,” he said in the Parliament. This step will help to improve the healthcare delivery system in these areas. In this scheme, the Central government has approved
India brings back 104 people from Afghanistan NEW DELHI, DEC 10 (PTI): India has evacuated 104 people, including 10 Indian nationals, from Kabul in a special charter aircraft on Friday. External Affairs Ministry Spokesperson Arindam Bagchi said the flight was arranged under India’s operation Devi Shakti. The operation was launched to evacuate Indians from Afghanistan after it fell to the Taliban on August 15. “Under Operation Devi Shakti, a special Kam Air flight arranged by India has arrived in New Delhi from Kabul,” Bagchi tweeted. “It has brought 10 Indians and 94 Afghans including members of the Afghan HinduSikh minority community. Among the evacuees are 9 children, including 3 infants,” he said. The flight is likely to fly back over 90 Afghan nationals stranded in India along with some medical supplies, officials said. The flight brought three copies of the Guru Granth Sahib and Hindu religious texts from the ancient Asamai Mandir in Kabul.
establishment of 157 new medical colleges in three phases. Out of these, 70 medical colleges have become functional till date. Answering another question on the steps taken by the Centre for making healthcare facilities affordable for patients, he said: “To provide affordable and quality tertiary health care facilities, the government is setting up new All India Institute of Medical Science (AIIMS) and upgrading Government Medical Colleges under the Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Suraksha Yojana. The state governments are also supported for setting up of new medical colleges as well as for increasing undergraduate and postgraduate medical seats.” “Further, under the NHM, technical and financial support is provided to states and union territories for strengthening their healthcare systems,” he said.
PANAJI, DEC 10 (PTI): Congress General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra on Friday promised 30 per cent reservation in jobs for women if her party is voted to power in the upcoming assembly polls in Goa and asked people to be aware of new parties coming in the state from “outside” in an apparent dig at the AAP. She criticised the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), which is seeking to play a major role in Goa’s electoral politics, holding it responsible for the air pollution in the national capital where the Arvind Kejriwal-led outfit is in power. Priyanka Gandhi, during her day-long tour to the coastal state, visited Morpirla village in the Quepem assembly segment where she interacted with tribal women. The Congress leader also joined the tribal women in performing their traditional dance.

“When you go to vote this time, first of all think about yourself, your state and your family. Vote for the party that will solve your issues,” she said in a brief address to the gathering. “Many parties will come from outside. These days new parties are coming,” she stated. The Congress leader asked people to check before voting what these respective parties have done in states where they are in power.
“Have they done development? I am from Delhi, the AAP is from Delhi. There is so much pollution in Delhi that you can’t even breathe,” she said. “It is only the Congress party that will work for you,” Priyanka Gandhi added. The Congress, when voted to power in the state, will reserve 30 per cent of the jobs “only for women”, she said. The Congress leader said a balance should be maintained between development and environmental protection. “You will have to save your environment, water, sea, farming. You will have to think which is the party that will work for you,” she said. She also assured to solve issues like water scarcity and unemployment in Goa, where assembly polls are due in early 2022.
Farmers hold ‘havan’ for Gen Rawat, other victims GHAZIABAD (UP), DEC 10 (PTI): Farmers at the Ghazipur border on Friday organised a ‘havan’ to pray for Chief of Defence Staff General Bipin Rawat, his wife and 11 other defence personnel who were killed in a helicopter crash in Tamil Nadu. Besides farmers, national spokesperson of the Bharatiya Kisan Union (BKU) Rakesh Tikait, BKU Uttar Pradesh president Rajbir Singh Jadaun and other office-bearers attended the ‘havan’, according to the state vice president of the farmers’ group Rajbir Singh. A Mi-17V5 helicopter carrying Gen Rawat, his wife and 11 other defence personnel crashed near Coonoor in Tamil Nadu on Wednesday. As India’s first Chief of Defence Staff, Gen Rawat was tasked with bringing in theatre command and jointness among the three services, and he was pushing it with a tough approach and specific timelines over the last two years. Known to be forthright, fearless, and blunt

at times, the 63-year-old strongly backed a policy of hot pursuit in dealing with cross-border terrorism and militancy in Jammu and Kashmir when he was the Army Chief between 2016 and 2019. Farmers were also busy dismantling the encampments they set up at the protest site over the past year as they got ready to head back home. Singh said the community kitchens will be operational till the protest site is completely cleared.
The Ghazipur border is most likely to be vacated by Saturday, he said. Meanwhile, a National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) official said National Highway 9 will be opened for commuters after a technical inspection of the stretch where the farmers were camping for over a year and its pillars is completed. Once the farmers vacate the highway, NHAI engineers will conduct an inspection and repair the damaged portions, if any,
Arvind Kumar, project director, NHAI, told PTI. The Samyukt Kisan Morcha (SKM), which spearheaded the farmers’ agitation against the Centre’s farm laws, on Thursday decided to suspend the movement and announced that farmers will go back home on Saturday from the protest sites on Delhi’s borders. The agitation, which began in November last year, mainly drew farmers from Punjab, Haryana and Uttar Pradesh.
Non-Punjabis of ‘khaas’ party trying to fool people: Channi IAF calls for avoiding uninformed MANSA (PB), DEC 10 (PTI): Punjab Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi on Friday called the AAP a party of “thugs and looters” and said its “non-Punjabis” are trying to fool people of the state with their “poll gimmicks”. Punning on the name of Aam Aadmi Party (Common Man’s Party, he called it the “khaas” (special) party. Addressing the gathering here, Channi also attacked the Badals for “looting” the state and former chief minister Amarinder Singh for his “misrule.” “The non-Punjabis of the ‘khaas party’ are trying to fool the people of Punjab with their poll gimmicks but the Punjabis are aware enough and will teach them

a lesson,” said Channi. Their “day dream” of capturing Punjab by installing the posters of “outsiders” everywhere will never turn into reality as Punjabis will throw these “blackhearted kaala angrez out”. He termed the AAP as a party of “thugs and looters.” Channi said these “outsiders” of the AAP are
Use a Godrej lock to keep your candidates safe: Goa BJP prez PANAJI, DEC 10 (IANS): Goa BJP president Sadanand Shet Tanavade on Friday chided the Maharashtrawadi Gomantak Party (MGP) leadership to keep their candidates under “lock and key”, amid allegations that the ruling party was trying to poach election candidates from the regional party. “BJP does not poach anybody’s candidates. If people want to safeguard their candidates, they should keep them safe by padlocking them with a big Godrej lock,” Tanavade told a press conference on Friday. The
state BJP president was responding to allegations levelled by MGP MLA and former Deputy Chief Minister Sudin Dhavalikar, who had alleged that the ruling BJP was trying to poach some of its candidates. “We are not interested in poaching (MGP) candidates. He should protect his own candidates,” Tanavade also said. The BJP over the last few weeks has inducted a steady stream of politicians from the Congress, MGP as well as the Goa Forward party. Since 2017, 14 Congress MLAs have quit the opposition party to join the BJP.
not even giving space to any leader from Punjab on their posters and hoardings which shows their “hidden agenda”. Earlier this month, Channi had dubbed the AAP a party of ‘kaale angrez’ (black Britishers) trying to win the 2022 state assembly elections, prompting his Delhi counterpart Arvind Kejriwal to retort that he may be dark-complexioned but his intention is fair. Lashing out at the Badals and Akali leader Bikram Singh Majithia, Channi on Friday alleged that they “looted the state’s exchequer to set up their own business empires.” Former chief minister Amarinder Singh had also
involved himself in such malpractice without paying any heed to the problems of the common people, he further charged. “These types of people will never understand the plight of common people as they belong to the elite class. Elites don’t have any caste or religion as their only motive is to fetch money to their pockets by any means,” said Channi. Further highlighting Amarinder Singh’s alleged misrule, Channi said his predecessor had hired an army of advisers and facilitated them with hundreds of police personnel to “unnecessarily harass” the public. Speaking on the occasion, Transport Minister Amarinder Singh Raja War-
ring said that though their party gave a free hand to the former chief minister to redress the problems of the people in Punjab despite taking oath of the holy ‘Gutka sahib’ (religious book), he did not fulfil promises made by him. “Now, the Captain (Amarinder Singh) has been changed and our new CM Channi has pressed all the means to fulfil the promises within the span of just a few months. Many of the promises such as cheaper power tariff, waiver of water and power bills and capping sand and gravel rates have been made a reality in just 70 days. Apart from these, the noose has been tightened around all types of mafia,” said Warring.
speculation on helicopter crash
NEW DELHI, DEC 10 (PTI): The Indian Air Force on Friday called for avoiding “uninformed” speculation on the chopper crash near Coonoor that killed CDS Gen Bipin Rawat, his wife and 11 armed forces personnel. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh said in Parliament on Thursday that a tri-services inquiry has been ordered into the crash and it is being headed by Marshal Manavendra Singh, the Air Officer Commanding-inChief of the IAF’s Training Command. In a tweet, the IAF said the inquiry would be completed expeditiously and the facts will be brought out. “IAF has constituted a
tri-service Court of Inquiry to investigate the cause of the tragic helicopter accident on 08 Dec 21,” it said. “The inquiry would be completed expeditiously & facts brought out. Till then, to respect the dignity of the deceased, uninformed speculation may be avoided,” it added. The IAF’s comments came amid speculation by a certain section about reasons for the crash on Wednesday including doubts about whether it was the result of a possible sabotage. Shiv Sena leader Sanjay Raut on Thursday said the death of Gen Rawat has raised doubts in the minds of people. Raut, a Rajya Sabha member, said Gen Rawat had played a
key role in formulating the nation’s military response against China and Pakistan in recent times. “So, when such an accident takes place, it raises doubts in the minds of the people,” he said, noting that the helicopter ferrying Gen Rawat was a modern machine powered by two engines. Raut claimed that the entire country and the leadership may have been confounded by this accident, and the defence minister or the prime minister should eliminate all doubts. Meanwhile, reacting to questions raised about a possible Chinese angle into the crash, Chinese state media dismissed any conspiracy theory.
Nawab Malik apologizes to HC for comments against Wankhede family
MUMBAI, DEC 10 (PTI): NCP leader and Maharashtra minister Nawab Malik on Friday tendered an unconditional apology to the Bombay High Court for making public comments about NCB official Sameer Wankhede and his family despite an assurance that he would not do so. Senior counsel Aspi Chinoy, who appeared for Malik, submitted an affidavit by the minister where he apologized for having violated the court’s November 29 order. It was not his intention to dishonor the court by breaching his own undertaking, Malik said in the affidavit. But he also
Nawab Malik
contended that he made the comments in question during an interview and they were not part of social media posts, or public comments. “I offer my unconditional apology to this court in terms of breaches of the
undertaking given on November 25 and November 29,” he said in the affidavit. He will not make any personal comments about the Wankhede family until the high court heard the defamation suit filed against him by Sameer Wankhede’s father Dnyandev, the minister said. “I, however, believe my statement will not prevent me from commenting on the political misuse of central agencies, and the conduct of their officers in the course of performance of their official duties hereafter,” the affidavit added. The high court accepted Malik’s apology. It also took note of the
objection raised by Dnyandev Wankhede’s lawyer, senior counsel Birendra Saraf, about Malik’s statement that he can still comment on the conduct of `officials of Central agencies’. Malik must not misuse this part of the affidavit to continue making defamatory statements against Sameer Wankhede (who is Mumbai zonal director of the Narcotics Control Bureau), advocate Saraf said. Advocate Chinoy said his client will not make any personal comments against the officer. “I (Malik) am not saying anything about his (Sameer Wankhede’s) personal life. His religion, caste, holidays... I am not
interested,” the lawyer said. The high court accepted Chinoy’s statement but also made it clear that Malik shall not make any comments on Sameer Wankhede’s past conduct in discharge of official duty. Any comments must be restricted to the present or future, the court said. The court also suggested that counsels of both the parties must advise them to “put an end to this.” Chinoy said he wished he could, but the issue was “very complex.” On November 29, the division bench had quashed the November 22 order of a single judge who had refused to restrain the minister from making defama-
tory statements against the Wankhedes while the defamation suit was heard. Malik then gave an undertaking that he will not make public statements or post anything on social media against the Wankhede family. The court also asked Dnyandev Wankhede to file a rejoinder (additional) affidavit by January 3, 2022. Dnyandev has filed a defamation suit against Malik and sought damages of Rs 1.25 crore, alleging that the NCP leader launched a smear campaign against his family after Malik’s sonin-law was arrested by the NCB in a drugs case earlier this year.

OPINION/EDITORIAL
Nagaland Post VOL. XXXII NO. 9 DIMAPUR, SATURDAY, DECEMBER 11, 2021
F
All for nothing
armers in India finally agreed to call off further protests against the farm bills on December 9, after parliament had earlier rolled back the contentious bills on November 30. All these came after prime minister Narendra Modi on November 19, did an unexpected U-turn by agreeing to roll back the three controversial farm laws. His government solidified his announcement by passing a bill in parliament to that effect. Modi’s sudden change of heart came after over a year of his government’s stoutly adamant stand against watering down even the guaranteed Minimum Support Price(MSP) and an assured procurement market. The government had proposed and passed the controversial farm bills without bothering to have them discuss or refer them to a parliament committee. The farm bills were tabled and passed without debate in the Lok Sabha on September 17, 2020 and the Rajya Sabha on September 20, 2020. The President of India, Ram Nath Kovind, gave his assent on September 27, 2020.Even when the farm laws were to be rolled back, as agreed by the Modi government, both houses of parliament gave their approval in quick succession amid an uproar on the first day of the Winter session without any discussion as demanded by the opposition. The government appear to treat parliament with disdain as it refused to have the bills discussed on both occasions by members when it was passed by brute majority and on November 30, rolled back again without debate and steamrolled by brute majority. The roll back of the farm laws mean that everything that the government sought to achieve in passing them, was wrong and in vain. The obstinacy of the government on farmers bills had left no room for negotiations and as a result thousands of farmers protested across India. The farmers unions claimed that at least 700 farmers died during violent confrontations with police forces. The farmers may have agreed to not hold anymore protests and also to go back home from the Singhu border, where they had been camped for over a year since 2020. The Modi government had erected concrete and iron barriers at Singhu to prevent farmers from marching to Delhi. The farmers will meet on January 15,2022 to review progress on the government’s assurances and decided whether the government fulfilled its assurances. The farmers bills will go down in history as black bills that had led to the deaths of so many farmers. How the Modi government treated farmers was amply shown when union minister of state for home, Ajay Mishra Teni’s motorcade ran over protesting farmers near Tikunia town in Uttar Pradesh’s Lakhimpur Kheri district on October 3, killing four of them.Ajay Mishra Teni’s son Ashish Mishra was seen driving the vehicle that ploughed through the procession of protesting farmers. Some reports said Ajay Mishra was also in the vehicle. After much hue and cry, the UP police finally filed charges against Ashish and took him to custody(not arrested like an accused). The demands for dropping Ajay Mishra from the union ministry has not been heeded though it was one of the demands of the opposition as well as farmers. However, what is clear is that any genuine future proposal for reform of Indian agriculture has been crushed under the weight of wealthy farmers, traders and middlemen for decades to come by a government which, decided that winning elections is everything.
DailyDevotion The Offering of the Natural
It is written that Abraham had two sons: the one by a bondwoman, the other by a freewoman. —Galatians 4:22
Paul was not dealing with sin in this chapter of Galatians, but with the relation of the natural to the spiritual. The natural can be turned into the spiritual only through sacrifice. Without this a person will lead a divided life. Why did God demand that the natural must be sacrificed? God did not demand it. It is not God’s perfect will, but His permissive will. God’s perfect will was for the natural to be changed into the spiritual through obedience. Sin is what made it necessary for the natural to be sacrificed. Abraham had to offer up Ishmael before he offered up Isaac (see Genesis 21:8-14). Some of us are trying to offer up spiritual sacrifices to God before we have sacrificed the natural. The only way we can offer a spiritual sacrifice to God is to “present [our] bodies a living sacrifice…” (Romans 12:1). Sanctification means more than being freed from sin. It means the deliberate commitment of myself to the God of my salvation, and being willing to pay whatever it may cost. If we do not sacrifice the natural to the spiritual, the natural life will resist and defy the life of the Son of God in us and will produce continual turmoil. This is always the result of an undisciplined spiritual nature. We go wrong because we stubbornly refuse to discipline ourselves physically, morally, or mentally. We excuse ourselves by saying, “Well, I wasn’t taught to be disciplined when I was a child.” Then discipline yourself now! If you don’t, you will ruin your entire personal life for God. God is not actively involved with our natural life as long as we continue to pamper and gratify it. But once we are willing to put it out in the desert and are determined to keep it under control, God will be with it. He will then provide wells and oases and fulfill all His promises for the natural (see Genesis 21:15-19).

NAGALAND POST, DIMAPUR SATURDAY, DECEMBER 11, 2021
Post-mortem AIFF&SO requests PM and NSBB on biodiversity conservation
T President to revoke AFSPA A
t the outset, I would like to state that we condemned the killing of the innocent and unarmed fourteen laborers of Oting Village, Mon district, Nagaland by 21st Para Special Forces as well as on retaliatory killing of a para military personnel on 4th &5th December 2021. We convey our deepest condolences to the bereaved families for those killed in the unfortunate incident. We pray to our Almighty God for their souls to rest in peace. We also pray for speedy recovery of those injured. In this connection, we will not be able to bring back the life of those killed but army have to realize their mistake for murdering of innocent and unarmed brethren. It is not time to argue among ourselves but to learn the lessons and to prepare for protecting our homeland from the external forces. It may be mentioned here that North East States are the corridors and required special attention for the whole Nation and not a state. If a part of this country suffers, it will affect the whole country. Therefore, in this critical juncture, it is not the right time to argue among the leaders but to collectively and judiciously resolve our differences so that we can unitedly withstand
the external forces. It is to inform you that it is not only the present incident of the 4 December 2021 at Oting but in the past also thousands of innocent people of Nagaland were murdered, many villages were burnt down to ashes, uncountable mothers and sisters were shamelessly raped by the Indian army, to name few; by mis-using the aforesaid Act and caused untold misery to the people of the Nagaland and North East. When this part of people protests against killing of the innocent and unarmed people, the Government of India declares them as anti-national or terrorists. But when the Indian Armed Forces randomly murdered or raped the women of Nagaland and North East, we asked for justice, it 1s a known fact that no single action was taken against any army officer nor any army personnel till today because of this draconian Act, and intentionally murdered democracy and justice. I may be allowed to express my opinion that if some senior citizens do not like to repeal the said law, kindly apply the same law to the whole citizens in the country uniformly so that they will feel the pinch of what we the people of North East.
It may be pertinent to inform you that the Commandant (CO) of 46 Assam Rifles Col. Viplav Tripathi, his wife and his son and four other jawans including our Naga Rifleman Khatnei Konyak, were killed unfortunately by the insurgents in the ambush near Sialsi village under Behiang Police Station, Charachandpur district, Imphal in the morning on 13 November, 2021; photocopy of the daily newspaper of Nagaland Post dated November 14, 2021 issue is attached herewith for ready reference vide Annexure-A. As we are all human beings from a country as well as to keep up the unity and protect our motherland, the Government of India needs to address to the genuine demand of the people of the Nagaland and North East States so that the final peace solution between the Naga underground groups and the Government of India can be solved early and amicably Therefore, I earnestly request the Government of India to take early action to revoke the draconian law of Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act, 1942 (1958) from the NE States as early as possible. President AIFF&SO, Zeliezhu Angami.
he survival of human beings and animals, both directly as well as indirectly, depends on biodiversity; as their basic needs in the form of food, water, and shelter are met from biodiversity. In addition to these tangible benefits, biodiversity plays a key role in carbon sequestration, amelioration of environment and climate change. The Convention on Biodiversity (CBD) was signed by the world leaders in the Earth Summit at the Rio de Janerio in June 1992 by having realized the importance of biodiversity for survival and development of human beings. Different countries of the world enacted Acts and framed rules for conservation of biodiversity, its sustainable use and equitable distribution of benefits accruing of its use and associated traditional knowledge. In our country, the Biodiversity Act was passed in 2002 and the Biodiversity Rules were framed in 2004 for achieving the aforementioned objectives. The Biodiversity Act had been ratified by the State Legislators and the Nagaland Biodiversity Rules, 2012 had been made for biodiversity conservation. With the active support of the Forest Department / District Administration/ Rural Development Department, Biodiversity Management Committees (BMCs) have been constituted in the State in 1266 villages out of 1285 villages for achieving the objectives of the Convention on Biodiversity (CBD). The constitution
of BMC in remaining villages of the State is under progress. The content of the Section 7 of the Biological Diversity Act, 2002 is as under: “No person, who is a citizen of India or a body corporate, association or organisation which is registered in India shall obtain any biological resources for commercial utilisation, or bio-survey and bioutilisation for commercial utilisation except after giving prior intimation to the State Biodiversity Board concerned: Provided that the provision of this section shall not apply to the local people and communities of the area, including growers and cultivators of biodiversity, and vaids and hakims, who have been practicing indigenous medicine. Advisory to parents and teachers on children’s safe online gaming
I
n the new era of technology, online gaming is very popular with children because of the challenges it brings to the players which excite them and making them play more which can lead to addiction. Online games can either be played on the internet itself or from another computer network. Online games can almost be found anywhere on any gaming platforms such as PC’s, consoles, and mobile devices. Online gaming can be accessed with the use of a phone or a tablet which is a common factor in online game addiction because children can easily play games anywhere anytime affecting their time for their school and social life. Furthermore, the closure of schools due to pandemic has increased use of mobile and internet by children. However, online gaming has many downsides. Playing online games leads to a serious gaming addiction which has been considered as a gaming disorder. The game is designed in a way that each level is more complicated and complex than the previous one. This causes a player to push themselves to the limit in order to progress in the game. Therefore, playing online games with no restriction and self-limits leads many
players to become addicted and are eventually diagnosed with gaming disorder. The gaming companies also emotionally compel the child to buy more levels and almost force in-app purchases. In view of the same, advisory to parents and teachers has been recommended for wider circulation and educating them for necessary action ensuring effective use in overcoming all online gaming downsides with the associated mental and physical stress to children. Don’ts Do not allow in-game purchases without parental consent. To avoid in app purchases; OTP based payment methods may be adopted as per RBI’s guidelines. Avoid credit/debit cards registration on apps for subscriptions. Place an upper limit on expenditure per transaction. Do not let children buy directly from the laptop or mobile they use for gaming. Advise children not to download software and games from unknown websites. Tell them to be beware of clicking links, images and pop-ups in the websites as they may contain a virus and harm the computer, and may contain age-inappropriate
content. Advise them not to give personal information over the Internet while downloading games. They should never share personal information with people in games and on gaming profile. Advise them not to communicate with strangers, including adults, through web cam, private messaging or online chat, as it increases the risk of contact from online abusers, or bullying from other players. Advise them against engaging in game for long hours without taking a break considering health aspects and addiction. Do’s While playing online games, if something wrong happened, stop immediately and take a screenshot (using the “print screen” button on the keyboard) and report it. Help your child to protect their privacy online, get them to use a screen name (avatar) that does not reveal their real name. Use antivirus/spyware programs and configure web browsers securely using firewall. Activate parental controls and safety features on the device or in the app or browser as it helps restrict access to certain content and limit spending on in-game
purchases. Notify if a stranger tries to start a conversation about something inappropriate or requests personal information. Check the age rating of any games your child is playing. In case of a bullying, encourage not to respond and keep a record of the harassing messages and report the behaviour to the game site administrator/block, mute or ‘unfriend’ that person from their players list, or turn off the in-game chat function. Play alongside your child to get a better sense of how they are handling their personal information and who they are communicating with. Help your child understand that some features in online games are used to encourage more play and spending. Talk to them about gambling, what it is and its consequences both online and in the physical world. Always ensure that your child accesses internet from a computer placed in the family space. India and her classic case of misconduct on the Nagas via AFSPA
I
magine a situation w h e r e, a n i n t r u d e r from God knows where comes into your house and molests your wife and do unimaginable things to her, then you retaliate as a natural human impulse without a care of what the consequence may be and say there are three probable situations that followsSituation A- the intruder escapes Situation B- the Husband kills the intruder Situation C- the intruder kills the husband Before we dive into the analysis let’s be clear on this metaphor, the intruder is the one we all know even without having to mention it. The wife is our civil liberty and human rights and the husband is all of us-the sons and daughters of the soil. In situation ‘A’, the intruder escapes under the guise of AFSPA every time it commits a blunder- giving no time to themselves to review and repent for their mistakes and due to which they keep intruding time and again under the mad name of a special law that keeps them immune to guilt, regardless of how heinous their act may be. Irony is they are the same force that go for peace missions abroad as Peace Keeping Forces and yet, create havoc among their fellow country folks at home. In Situation B- the in-
truder is neutralized and the sponsor of the intruder makes large hue and cry shedding a sea of crocodile tears and then calls the husband a terrorist- A terrorist for what? For protecting his home and family built on land inherited from his ancestors long before the ancestors of those sitting in the power seats of Delhi were aware of the existence of the proud Nagas living in the Naga hills. As though that is not enough the intruder neutralized in the act suddenly becomes a Martyr- the dictionary defines martyr as one who suffers for the sake of principle or one who voluntarily suffers death as the penalty for refusing to renounce their religion. Now in what twisted angle did the intruder attain martyrdom? That is a puzzle of which the answer lies with the sponsor of the intruder. The recent incident at Oting Village, under Mon district of Nagaland where more than a dozen of innocent and unarmed Naga youths were ambushed and killed in cold blood in broad daylight by the Intruders and then calling the slain youths as terrorist/insurgents and the lone casualty from the intruder as a martyr is just another pixel in the big screen of the Indian mainstream media, most of which are a mere puppy
fed by the government of the day. In situation C- the intruder kills the husband and the plain explanation given by the uncle of the intruder is that, the intrudersorry, now he is a hero with bravery awards on his chest- made the action of killing the husband purely out of self-defense. Well, it looks like the resident has no right to self defense in his own house and that’s sadly how it is and has been for so long that one can barely remember if self defense is an inherent right anymore for us Nagas’. In any of the given situations above, the intruder has all to gain and the resident has all to lose and the saddest part of the story is the resident being held like a captive in his own land and that is the story of us- the Nagas, ever since the devil in the form of AFSPA (Armed Forces Special Powers Act) descended upon the land in 1958. By all accounts, 63 years is a good enough year to review and repeal this draconian Act given the fact that India herself is only 74 years old as an independent nation. The endless extension of the ‘disturbed area’ tag every 6 months is sickening beyond comprehension. Let’s face it, which part or State of India is not disturbed? Delhi NCR is in fact the most disturbed area of
the country, the staggering amount of crime that takes place in Delhi in a calendar year is renowned worldwide and so is the pollution of all types and kinds. Let’s take a look at the crime statistics of recent years, as per the rate of violent crimes during 2010, Delhi scored 30.4 and was placed All India fourth position in violent crime tally and then Nagaland had the lowest and the safest in the country with a score of 10.1. Again in 2016, Delhi was adjudged the least safe State/UT with the highest cognizable crime rate of 160.4 (per 100,000 persons) and Nagaland had the lowest incidence of crime based on the percentage of share. Even at the latest crime rate statistics of 2020, Delhi is only second to Chennai but our focus is on Delhi at the moment, why? Because Delhi NCR is the power capital where all the Netas and Babus live and if they can’t even control their vicinity then why in the world are they sitting there and endlessly extending the ‘Disturbed Area’ tag in Nagaland- one among the most peaceful states of the country. It sure makes one wonder, if the people sitting in air-conditioned offices in Delhi and extending the “Disturbed Area” tag are more disturbed than the tag itself. One may read ‘Walk-
ing with the comrades’ by Arundhati Roy where she talks about India, a country ruled on the principle of Hindu majoritarianism by the Hindu majority and any evidence of resentment by anyone beyond the community is taken as a threat and they will take any step/ measure to suppress it. Hence, in order to achieve this crazy goal of being at the top come what may, they will send Kashmiris to fight in Manipur, Nagas to Chhattisgarh, Mizos to Jammu and Kashmir and et al.- all in the name of maintaining law and order. And that is how the ethnic and cultural minorities of the country are used as pawns and made to fight each other for the benefit of the majority- the master. Let me say without any doubt that, India today is a world power by all standards in terms of technology and weaponry but what is the point of propagating human rights at the international platform, when the basic human rights of its own citizens are being curtailed and suppressed? Yes your military might silence a few bodies but remember, you may kill the body but never the will nor the spirit and the resonance that finds rhythm among the Naga brethren by this latest blunder of yours is not something that will die with time but rather it’s
a calling to unite our spirit to a common platform of brotherhood- to stand for our people and for our land and its rich history, that come what may, we will not relent to the imperialist designs of the Indian government which they inherited from the British and are experimenting on the Nagas to this day. I sincerely believe that, we all consider ourselves as a Naga first and then an Indian, Naga Indian in short and so people from all class and category be it underground, over-ground or mid-ground should come together and put in our thoughts together and push forward the demand for repealing AFSPA from our land once and for all because our enchanting State is as peaceful as it should be and the only disturbance we have is the one they brought upon us without we asking for it. In conclusion, I stagger to imagine what the spirit of Khatnei Konyak, who gave his blood for India and martyred on November 13, 2021 along with Col. Viplav Tripathy in the Manipur ambush would be feeling at meeting his blood brothers at the gates of Heaven; them who were martyred by the very force that he served his life with, until the very end. NAGALAND POST, DIMAPUR SATURDAY, DECEMBER 11, 2021
Explain PM’s surprise ‘Net Zero’ Farmers plan protest monuments in villages announcement at Glasgow: Oppn in LS
NEW DELHI, DEC 10 (PTI): For over a year, a 2,400-square-foot tent at the Singhu border was home to Gurinder Singh, Butta Singh Shadipur and their fellow villagers who were protesting the contentious farm laws. On Friday, the two friends pulled down this pavilion of protest but said they intend to rebuild it at their village in Punjab’s Bhatinda district to keep the memories of the movement alive. As the farmers prepare to leave their protest sites on Delhi’s borders on Saturday after the government repealed the farm laws and acceded to their other demands, many say they will reinstall their tents in their villages as a symbol of their long, arduous struggle. When Gurinder Singh, Butta Singh Shadipur and 500 others from their Ram Nawas village reached the Singhu border on November 26 last year, they had to unroll their mattresses on the floor and sleep under the open skies. Over the next few months, the two built a makeshift structure that has three rooms, a bathroom and a meeting area together

measuring 2,400 square feet. They used bamboo for partitions and tinshed for roof. Around 70-80 people would sleep in the meeting area and the three rooms every night. They then brought television, cooler, gas stove, a small fridge -- everything they needed for a comfortable stay at what would be their home till the government conceded their demands of repeal of the three contentious farm laws and a panel on legal guarantee for minimum support price for crops among others. Now, the two friends plan to rebuild the structure in their village to keep the
memories of the movement alive. “We spent around Rs 4.50 lakh on this structure. We had everything we needed. Now, we plan to shift it to our village and rebuild it,” Gurvinder Singh said. Butta Singh Shadipur said the structure will also serve as a memorial to those who died during the farm movement. “We will also keep some of our pictures in it to remind us of the time spent here,” he added, recalling the initial days of the movement when they faced tear gas shells, water cannons and batons. Bakshish Singh, who
managed a 10-bed ‘Kisan Mazdoor Ekta Hospital’ at the protest site, rode a wave of conflicting emotions as the protest draws to an end. The smiles and hugs hide the pain of parting, Bakshish said. The 30-year-old man from Patiala said the Life Care Foundation-run makeshift hospital started with one stool and medicines to control sugar and blood pressure. “We scaled it up seeing that a large number of farmers, especially the elderly, had some health issues or other,” Bakshish said. The hospital recorded over a lakh OPD visits in the last one year and local residents accounted for more than 50 per cent of them, doctors said. Free diagnostic tests were conducted at the facility for dengue, malaria, chikungunya, typhoid, etc. “We got a lot of cases of heart attack and seizure. I can say the number of deaths during the protest would have been higher had the hospital not been there,” the supervisor said. The Life Care Foundation now plans to shift
the hospital to a place near Jalandhar to provide free medical treatment to the needy there. “We will take it down and reassemble it again. A part of the hospital will be converted into a museum having pictures and records of persons treated during the protest,” Bakshish said. The Samyukta Kisan Morcha, a forum of 40 farmer unions, Thursday announced that the stir will be suspended and the farmers would go back home in a victory march on December 11. The announcement came after the Centre accepted most of the their other demands, including withdrawal of “fake case” against farmer protesters. Jarnail Singh from Mohali said they had built two temporary structures with bamboo and tarpaulin for around 500 people from 12 villages. “It cost us Rs 4 lakh -- Rs 2 lakh for each structure. Everybody contributed something. Inverter battery, air conditioners, television we had everything,” he said climbing a ladder to take the tarpaulin off.
NEW DELHI, DEC 10 (PTI): Opposition members on Friday alleged that Prime Minister Narendra Modi did a “volte-face” by setting a ‘Net Zero’ target of 2070 at the climate summit in Glasgow and questioned the rationale behind it. “Even a week before the COP 26, the government of India did not show any inclination to announce Net Zero target. Actually, the Environment Secretary had ruled it out in the media,” Trinamool member Saugata Roy said, continuing the discussion on climate change in Lok Sabha. The discussion on climate change was initiated by DMK member Kanimozhi on Wednesday. “What prompted and under what pressure the prime minister did a volteface in Glasgow and announced Net Zero target in 2070? Is there any credible research available to vindicate the 2070 Net Zero target? Was any discussion carried out on the Net Zero target,” Roy asked. N K Premachandran (RSP) accused the developed nations of diluting their climate
commitments over the past three decades since the 1992 Rio conference. “The principle of equity has been diluted and lost over the last 30 years. ‘Common but differentiated responsibility’ has become an insignificant part of the Glasgow declaration,” he said referring to the concept first accepted at the UN Conference on Environment and Development in 1992 at Rio de Janeiro. He rued that even the concept of developed and developing countries had been changed at the COP 26 climate summit at Glagow and accused the rich coun-
tries of hiding behind poor countries in tackling the challenges posed by climate change. Ramesh Bidhuri (BJP) lauded the prime minister’s initiatives to popularise use of energy efficient LED bulbs as an alternative to traditional lighting solutions and offer LPG subsidies which, he claimed, has reduced the dependence on firewood for cooking. Bidhuri accused the Congress of “playing politics” with Mahatma Gandhi’s ideals of cleanliness and sustainable living and the “failure” to enact a law to ensure clean air in the country.

The report assessed the prevailing status of 100 emergency and injury care centres in government and private hospital settings in 28 states and 2 union territories of India, in addition to 34 district hospitals. Amongst the critical infra-related quality parameters assessed in the emergency departments (EDs), the following were important deficiencies: absence of point of care lab (73%), demarcated triage area (65%), police control room (56%), separate access for ambulance (55%) and adequate spacing for emergency department (52%). The report said, emergency and injury cases annually accounted for 9-13% of all patients presenting to a health facility and 19-24% of admissions in government hospitals and 31-39% admissions in private hos-
JAIPUR, DEC 10 (PTI): The Rajasthan gover nment’s decision to change the colour of its school uniform has stoked a controversy with the opposition BJP calling it a move to please the Congress high command. The earlier BJP government led by Vasundhara Raje had in 2017 changed the uniform colours to shades of brown. The Congress back then had alleged these colours resembled the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh’s uniform. Nearly three years after coming to power in December 2018, the Ashok Gehlotled Congress government has now issued orders to revise the colours from the next academic year. As per the school education department’s order
on December 8, boys will be seen in surf blue shirts and dark grey trousers while the girl students will wear surf blue kurtas or shirts and dark grey salwars or skirts. Former education minister Vasudev Devnani said the previous government had changed the school uniform colour to give a new look and a proud experience and that the change was introduced after discussions with students and teachers. Calling the Gehlot government’s decision “very shameful”, he said it was to please the party high command. The decision will put a financial burden on 98 lakh parents, Devnani pointed out. “There is no rule of law in the state. Serious

due to: high patient load, lack of in-house specialists in the ED, need for multiple cross referrals, with an overarching lack of a dedicated department for emergency services, it added. While 91% of hospitals had in-house ambulances, the report said trained paramedics needed to assist ambulance services were present only in 34%. The report pointed out that only 19% hospitals had a mobile stroke/STEMI (for heart attack) program, with only 4% having a mobile stroke unit. Specifically, equipment deficiencies pertained largely to the category of pediatric-care (75%), equipment pertaining to Airway, breathing, circulation and general categories had deficiencies pertaining to a few sets of specific equipment (10-72%), it said.

criterion. According to the report, many government medical colleges lacked common HDU (55%), Cardiac ICU (55%) and Neuro ICU (55%). In addition, they also lacked facilities for Coronary Artery By-pass Graft (55%), Cardiac Cath Labs (30%) and interventional radiology (40%), it said. The report pointed out that most of the hospitals did not have a dedicated blood bank in the emergency department nor an existing standard protocol for massive blood transfusion. It also said that the patient disposition time for the sickest group (red zone) was high at government medical colleges (90 minutes) visa-vis private hospitals (15 minutes). The reasons for this delay amongst others were
against SHO Mishra after intervention of Additional DG (Kanpur Zone), Bhanu Bhaskar, who instructed the district officials to conduct a proper inquiry. Police said the SHO has been suspended with immediate effect so that the incident can be probed in an unbiased manner. Additional SP (Kanpur Dehat), Ghanshyam, has been asked to conduct the inquiry into the matter and submit his report, the SP said.

Emergency care can be defined as the delivery of time-sensitive interventions needed to avert death and disability and for which delays of hours can worsen prognosis or render care less effective. The report noted that while compliance with availability of overall recommended biomedical equipment and critical equipment were largely found satisfactory at all private hospitals (86-93%) and government medical college hospitals (68%), deficiencies were found largely in smaller government hospitals (45-60%). Noting that since it is essential to have the complete list of all recommended emergency medicines 24*7 in the emergency departments, the report said assessment done for this aspect revealed that only 9% of all hospitals fulfilled this

MUMBAI, DEC 10 (PTI): The Bombay High Court on Friday said the Enforcement Directorate’s adjudicating authority can hear and pass final orders on the provisional attachment of assets of Maharashtra’s former home minister Anil Deshmukh and his wife Aarti in a money laundering case, but no coercive action shall be taken with regard to these properties till January 10. A division bench of Justices Gautam Patel and Madhav Jamdar directed the ED to submit its affidavit in reply to a petition filed by Aarti Deshmukh challenging the provisional attachment of their assets by the agency in connection with the money laundering case. Anil Deshmukh, an NCP leader, was arrested in the case last month and is presently in judicial custody. Aarti Deshmukh, in the plea, claimed that while she was not opposed to the authority hearing the issue of provisional attachment of assets, the said body was not functioning as mandated by law. Her counsel Vikram Chaudhri had argued earlier that as per the provisions of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA), the adjudicating authority under the legislation should be a three-member panel comprising a chairperson and two members, one of whom should have law background. “Presently, the authority comprises merely a single member who does not even have a law background,” Chaudhri had argued.
KANPUR (UP) DEC 10 (PTI): A Station House Officer (SHO) of the Uttar Pradesh Police was suspended on Friday after a purported video surfaced on social media showing him cane-charging a youth while he was holding a child in his arms. The incident took place outside the district hospital in Akbarpur where the hospital’s fourth class employees staged a dharna by putting locks on the OPD on Thursday, Kanpur
crimes are being committed against girls in government schools and the level of education is deteriorating. But, the attention of the government is maliciously focused only on the change of colour of the cycle, uniform and curriculum,” he said. Devnani also alleged that the enrolment in government schools was on the decline. Another BJP leader, who did not wish to be named, said that Congress government’s decision was illogical and that it would further burden the parents who are reeling under financial distress due to COVID-19. Rejecting the BJP’s allegations, School Education Minister BD Kalla said the change should not be seen in political light.
NEW DELHI, DEC 10 (PTI): The number of beds available at emergency departments accounted for only 3-5% of total hospital beds in the country, says a report that accessed the prevailing status of 100 emergency and injury care centres in government and private hospital settings. The report titled ‘Emergency and Injury Care at Secondary and Tertiary Level Centres in India’, prepared by the Department of Emergency Medicine, AIIMS was submitted to Niti Aayog. As per the report, most of the hospitals lacked presence of general doctors, specialists and nursing staff dedicated for emergency departments vis-a-vis the average footfall of patients, even though the hospitals as such, had sufficient overall numbers of required human

NEW DELHI, DEC 10 (PTI): Disinvestment of some public sector units is a continuous process and the Container Corporation of India Ltd (CONCOR) is one such unit, the government informed the Rajya Sabha on Friday. Replying to supplementaries during the Question Hour, Railways Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said the process of CONCOR disinvestment started during the Congress regime in 1994-95. “Disinvestment of some of the public sector units has been a continuous process. CONCOR today is an industry which already has over 15 container train operators in the country,” he said. Local villagers give company to the policemen to ensure that there is no attempt to tamper with any evidence by any person. Besides the six villagers in the pickup van who were killed in the firing on December 4, another seven were killed by the Army in violence involving irate locals at the incident site later that day. One Army personnel was also killed in the melee. Another civilian was killed when a mob attacked an Assam Rifles camp at Mon town on Sunday.

NEW DELHI, DEC 10 (IANS): Beijing is intervening to prevent a disorderly collapse of indebted real estate group Evergrande, which could wreak havoc on the world’s second biggest economy, CNN reported. Fitch Ratings had declared on Thursday that the embattled property developer has entered “restricted default”, reflecting the company’s inability to pay overdue interest earlier this week on two dollar bonds. The payments were due a month ago, and the grace periods lapsed on Monday. Evergrande’s apparent failure to pay that interest has revived fears about the future of the company, which is reeling under more than $300 billion of total liabilities, the report said. Evergrande is massive -- it has about 200,000 employees, raked in more than $110 billion in sales last year, and owns more than 1,300 developments in more than 280 cities -- the report said. Analysts have long been concerned that a collapse could trigger wider

53 die in truck crash smuggling migrants in Mexico
TUXTLA GUTIERREZ (MEXICO), DEC 10 (AP): Rescue workers rushing to a highway accident found a horrific scene of death and injury after a freight truck jammed with as many as 200 migrants tipped over and crashed into the base of a steel pedestrian bridge in southern Mexico. The migrants inside the cargo trailer were flipped, tossed and crushed into a pile that mingled the living and the dead. By late Thursday, the death toll stood at 53, and authorities said at least 54 people had been injured. It was one of the worst single-day death tolls for migrants in Mexico since the 2010 massacre of 72 migrants by the Zetas drug cartel in the northern state of Tamaulipas. Volunteer rescuers hauled bodies off the pile by their arms and legs, while some migrants scrambled and limped to extract themselves from the twisted steel sheets of the collapsed container. One young man, pinned in a heap of unmoving bodies, wriggled to free the lower half of his frame from the weight of the dead

piled atop him, his face wrenched into a grimace of life extracting itself from the clutches of death. Nearby, a man blinked his eyes, unable to move as he lay on the shoulder of the road. Next to him was a fellow migrant, stouter and older, whose eyes no longer needed shading — they stared, startled and lifeless, unblinking, into the setting sun. At the Vatican, Pope Francis, who visited Chiapas in 2015 and has made the plight of migrants a hallmark of his papacy, sent a telegram of condolences Friday to the archbishop of Tuxtla Gutierrez.
In the note, he offered prayers for the victims, their families and for the injured. While the Mexican government is trying to appease the United States by stopping caravans of walking migrants and allowing the reinstatement of the “Remain in Mexico” policy, it hasn’t been able to stop the flood of migrants stuffed hundreds at a time into freight trucks operated by smugglers who charge thousands of dollars to take them to the US border — trips that all too often lead them only to their deaths. The most severely injured, many streaming blood, were carried by their arms and legs to plastic
Nationwide ‘silent strike’ in Myanmar protests military rule

BA N G KO K ( T H A I LAND), DEC 10 (AP): Opponents of military rule in Myanmar on Friday held one of their biggest nationally coordinated protests in months, successfully calling on people across the country to shut their businesses and stay at home on International Human Rights Day. The “silent strike” was staged in cities and towns from 10 am to 4 pm, and came at a time of increasing violence in the political crisis triggered by the army’s seizure of power in February and ouster of
the elected government of Aung San Suu Kyi. On Tuesday, there was a widely reported massacre in the country’s northwestern Sagaing region in which soldiers were accused of rounding up and killing 11 civilians whose charred bodies were later discovered by fellow villagers. The military-installed government has denied its soldiers were involved, but it is staging an offensive in northwestern Myanmar against persistent resistance from anti-military militias. In Yangon, the country’s largest city, and else-
where, photos on social media showed normally busy streets empty of traffic on Friday. Usually crowded markets and plazas were quiet hours before the official start of the strike, which reaffirmed the widespread opposition to the army’s rule and its disregard for human rights. Min Han Htet, cofounder and spokesperson of the Alliance of Student Unions Yangon, said the strike by itself might not make a significant difference. “But by showing their unity, the strike is a success for the people who are waging psychological warfare against the military dictatorship,” he said. Solidarity appeared strong among operators of even the smallest shops in Yangon, but at least a few apparently paid a price for their defiance, as photos posted on social media showed fittings such as tables and chairs confiscated by security forces from some.
sheets set on the road. The walking wounded were led, stunned and uncomprehending, to the same sheets. Ambulances, cars and pickup trucks were dragooned into service, ferrying the injured to hospitals. Later, the dead were laid in rows of white sheets, side by side, on the highway. Rescue workers who first arrived said that even more migrants had been aboard the truck when it crashed and had fled for fear of being detained by immigration agents. One paramedic said some of those who hurried into surrounding neighbourhoods were bloodied or bruised, but still limped away in their desperation to escape. About 200 migrants may have been packed into the truck, said Guatemala’s top human rights official, Jordán Rodas. While shocking, that number is not unusual for migrant smuggling operations in Mexico, and the sheer weight of the load — combined with speed and a nearby curve — may have been enough to throw the truck off balance, authorities said.
Luis Manuel Moreno, head of the Chiapas state civil defense office, said about 21 of the injured had serious wounds and were taken to local hospitals. The federal Attorney General’s Office said three were critically injured in the crash on a highway leading from the Guatemalan border toward the Chiapas state capital. Sitting on the pavement beside the overturned trailer, survivor Celso Pacheco of Guatemala said the truck felt like it was speeding and then seemed to lose control under the weight of the migrants inside. Pacheco said there were migrants mostly from Guatemala and Honduras aboard and estimated there were eight to 10 young children. He said he was trying to reach the United States, but now expected to be deported to Guatemala. Marco Antonio Sánchez, director of the Chiapas Firefighter Institute, said ambulances raced victims to three hospitals, carrying three to four injured each. When there weren’t enough ambulances they loaded them into pickup trucks, he said.

J A K A RT A , D E C 1 0 (IANS): The death toll in the eruption of Mount Semeru in Indonesia’s Java island has increased to 43, with 104 people injured, the National Disaster Management Agency said. Thursday’s evacuation process was stopped, as the search and rescue location was covered by dark and overcast clouds, to avoid flooding of volcanic ash, according to agency spokesperson Abdul Muhari. “Based on a visual report, thick smoke was also sliding from the peak of Semeru up to 1,000 metres to the west to southwest direction this morning,” Xinhua news agency quoted Muhari as saying. More than 6,000 people remain in 121 evacuation points as their homes were swept away by volcanic ash or their settlements are located in the danger zone. The eruption killed thousands of livestock, while dozens of public facilities, including a bridge connecting districts, were damaged.
Russia, Ukraine trade blame as CF push breaks down
KYIV/MOSCOW, DEC 10 (AGENCIES): Ukraine and Russia blamed each other after a push to agree a new ceasefire (CF) in eastern Ukraine broke down late on Thursday as tensions over a Russian troop buildup near its southern neighbour persisted. Ukraine said Moscow had rejected a series of its proposals, including prisoner swaps, reopening a checkpoint and expanding a joint communications centre. Ukrainian troops have battled Russian-backed forces in its east since 2014. “Unfortunately, all initiatives of the Ukrai-

eral Contact Group (TCG), which also includes Russia and the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE), said.
Russia said late on Thursday that Kyiv had submitted “absolutely absurd” proposals and accused it of imitating negotiations at the talks. Moscow singled out a proposal to add Germany and France to the Joint Centre for Control and Coordination, a group tasked with implementing ceasefire agreements. “In such conditions, the Donetsk, Lugansk (separatist authorities) and the OSCE considered it impossible to continue talks. We are understanding of this decision,” said Boris Gryzlov, Russia’s envoy in the contact group.

Rawat’s death has an eerie parallel with the helicopter crash in early 2020 that killed Taiwan’s chief of general staff, Gen. Shen Yi-ming, and seven others, including two major generals. Each helicopter crash eliminated a key figure
in the defense against PRC’s aggression.” “The strange parallel doesn’t mean there was any connection between the two helicopter crashes or an outside hand. If anything, each crash has raised important internal questions, especially about maintenance of military helicopters transporting top generals.” The Global Times report went on to say that “Chellaney’s thread cannot be more ridiculous. Rawat was not on a Chinese aircraft. The helicopter did not crash anywhere near the China-India border, but in
southern India. Chellaney, however, wasted no time in spinning his conspiracy theory”. The crash immediately caused shockwaves not only in India but also in the world, as it is rare to witness such a grave accident which claimed the life of a top military officer, it said. Attacking Indian military prowess, the Global Times said. “The capability of India’s military equipment is not as impressive as the country has been boasting. “India’ defence manufacturing sector has very limited capability. Vows to resume attacks ISLAMABAD, DEC 10 (PTI): The banned Tehreeki-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) will not extend the monthlong ceasefire deal negotiated with the Pakistan government, the militant group has announced, in a major setback to Prime Minister Imran Khan’s efforts to secure a peace agreement with the dreaded outfit waging war against the state for decades. The Pakistani Taliban has been behind many major attacks on Pakistani security forces and civilians over the last 14 years, including the attack on an Army school in Peshawar in 2014 that killed over 150 people, mostly children. A statement issued by the TTP on Thursday accusing the Pakistan government of failing to honour the decisions, including the release of their fighters. It gave out details of the six-point agreement reached with the government under the aegis of
the “Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan” (IEA) on October 25, 2021, the Dawn newspaper reported. The two sides, according to the agreement, had accepted that the IEA would play the role of a mediator and that both sides would form five-member committees each which, under the supervision of the mediator, would discuss the next course of action and demands of each side. Both sides, it said, had also agreed to observe a month-long ceasefire from November 1 to November 30, 2021, and that the government would release 102 “imprisoned mujahideen” and hand them over to the TTP through the “IEA and that both sides would issue a joint statement regarding the ceasefire on November 1, 2021”, the report said.
According to the statement, the government not only failed to implement the decisions reached between the two sides but on the contrary, the security forces conducted raids in Dera Ismail Khan, Lakki Marwat, Swat, Bajaur, Swabi and North Waziristan and killed and detained militants. “Under these circumstances, it is not possible to extend the ceasefire,” the TTP said. Earlier in an audio message, TTP chief Mufti Noor Wali Mahsud announced an end to the ceasefire and asked his fighters to resume attacks past 12 am. The ceasefire had come into effect on November 9, the report added. In the message, Mufti Noor can be heard as saying that since the TTP has not heard back from the me-

China slams conspiracy theory over CDS chopper crash
NEW DELHI, DEC 10 (IANS): Chinese state media has slammed a conspiracy theory over the helicopter crash that killed India’s Chief of Defence Staff General Bipin Rawat and 12 others. “The crash of a helicopter with General Bipin Rawat, India’s highestranking military officer, on board was unfortunate. But Brahma Chellaney, a socalled scholar in India, took advantage of this misfortune, despicably, by attempting to cause new tensions in China-India ties,” the Global Times said in a re-
Guatemalan President Alejandro Giammattei wrote on Twitter: “I deeply regret the tragedy in Chiapas state, and I express my solidarity for the victims’ families, to whom we will offer all the necessary consular assistance, including repatriation.” The truck had originally been a closed freight module of the kind used to transport perishable goods. The container was smashed open by the force of the impact. It was unclear if the driver survived. Those who spoke to survivors said the migrants told of boarding the truck in Mexico, near the border with Guatemala, and of paying between $2,500 and $3,500 to be transported to Mexico’s central state of Puebla. Once there, they would presumably have contracted with another set of migrant smugglers to take them to the US border. I n r e c e n t m o n t h s, Mexican authorities have tried to block migrants from walking in large groups toward the US border, but the clandestine and illicit flow of migrant smuggling has continued.

The United States appealed, challenging the notion that Assange’s mental health made him too vulnerable to withstand the U.S. judicial system. diators or the government, therefore, past midnight, his fighters reserve the right to resume attacks wherever they were. The TTP decision to end the ceasefire is a big setback to the government’s efforts to secure a peace agreement with the militants waging war against the state for decades. A lot of informal discussions had taken place between the two sides before and during the ceasefire and certain confidence-building steps had been agreed upon to reassure each other, the sources were quoted as saying by the Dawn. Afghan Taliban are playing the role of principal mediator between Pakistan and the outlawed militant conglomerate comprising several factions. Under the deal, the government has agreed to release close to one hundred militants being held at ‘deradicalisation centers’. The first batch of around 12 has already been released. The second batch is expected to be freed in the next few days, to be followed by more in the days and weeks to come, the report said.

Experimental mRNA HIV vaccine safe, shows promise in animals
A
n experimental HIV vaccine based on mRNA -- the same platform technology used in two highly effective Covid-19 vaccines -has shown promise in mice and non-human primates, according to scientists at the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), part of the US National Institutes of Health. The results, published in the journal Nature Medicine, show that the novel vaccine was safe and prompted desired antibody and cellular immune responses against an HIV-like virus. Rhesus macaques receiving a priming vaccine followed by multiple booster inoculations had a 79 per cent lower perexposure risk of infection by simian-human immunodeficiency virus (SHIV) compared
to unvaccinated animals. “Despite nearly four decades of effort by the global research community, an effective vaccine to prevent HIV remains an elusive goal,” said co-author and NIAID Director Anthony S. Fauci. “This experimental mRNA vaccine combines several features that may overcome shortcomings of other experimental HIV vaccines and thus represents a promising approach,” he added. The experimental vaccine works like mRNA Covid-19 vaccines. However, instead of carrying mRNA instructions for the coronavirus spike protein, the vaccine delivers coded instructions for making two key HIV proteins, Env and Gag. In studies with mice, two injections of the VLP-forming mRNA vaccine induced neutral-

ising antibodies in all animals. The Env proteins produced in the mice from the mRNA instructions closely resembled those in the whole virus, an improvement over previous experimental HIV vaccines. The team then tested the Env-Gag VLP mRNA vaccine in macaques. Besides the prime vaccine, the boost vaccines, delivered over the course of a year, contained Gag mRNA and Env mRNA from two HIV clades other than the one used in the prime vaccine. Although the doses of mRNA delivered were high, the vaccine was well tolerated and produced only mild, temporary adverse effects in the macaques, such as loss of appetite. By week 58, all vaccinated macaques had developed measurable levels of neutralising antibodies directed against most
strains in a test panel of 12 diverse HIV strains. In addition, the VLP mRNA vaccine also induced a robust helper T-cell response. Beginning at week 60, immunised animals and a control group of unimmunised macaques were exposed weekly, via the rectal mucosa, to SHIV. Because non-human primates are not susceptible to HIV1, scientists use a chimeric SHIV in experimental settings because that virus replicates in macaques. After 13 weekly inoculations, two out of seven immunised macaques remained uninfected. The other immunised animals had an overall delay in infection, which occurred, on average, after eight weeks. In contrast, unimmunised animals became infected on average after three weeks. (IANS)

BBA’s new album, ‘Voyage’, has already gone Platinum. The album, which debuted at number one on album charts in 18 countries – including the UK – broke multiple chart records and sold over one million copies during its first week. To date, the album has already received over 275 million combined streams. The album has now ear ned Platinum status within just the first month of its release. Speaking on the early success of Voyage, the group said: “We are so happy that our fans seem to have enjoyed our new album as much as we enjoyed making

Taken from the group’s new album, ‘Voyage’, the festive single is described as “a gentle reflection on the joy of Christmas morning and family time around this special time of year.” Speaking about the new track, all the proceeds of which are going to Unicef ’s Global Child Protection Fund, ABBA said: “We think it is impossible to eradicate poverty without the empowerment of women. That’s why we support
Unicef in protecting girls from sexual violence and empowering them through the Global Child Protection Fund. “We have done so for many years with our song ‘Chiquitita’ and now we have decided to give Unicef a Christmas gift in the form of a second song: ‘Little Things’ from our album ‘Voyage!’”. Stating that the ceasefire monitoring committee headed by convenor ceasefire monitoring cell was in place and that the peace talks was also ongoing, SAWO said that the massacre of 14 innocent Konyak brethren was a genocidal act against human rights committed by the repeated offenders of the Indian Assam Rifles. Extending its solidarity with its Konyak brethren of Oting Village especially the grieving families, the association strongly demanded the centre take stringent action against the convener, ceasefire monitoring committee and responsible guilty officers/ personnel of the concerned Assam Rifle and the action taken be made known to the world immediately. It also appealed to the peace-loving citizens of India and the world community to strongly condemn this heinous crime and stand in solidarity with the aggrieved Nagas. “The matter should

be taken up seriously at the highest level as this can happen again to any one of us at any moment” SAWO stated. It also pointed out that centre, media and security forces claimed the Naga insurgent groups as terrorists and asked who was “the real terrorist here?” It demanded that the AFSPA be repealed immediately to show that human rights to live was being protected. M Y U : M o n Ye n Union has expressed deep anguish and strongly condemned the act. It appealed to the government to deliver justice for its innocent brothers and stated that the whole incident showed that “the existence of the draconian Armed Force Special Power Act (1958)” had “time and again caused irremediable damage to our
Naga society”. “Even though several witnesses and survivors of the fateful evening of December 4 have shared their testimonies, the mainstream news channels and politicians have not left any chance at calling the genocide an act of self-defence”, it stated. While pointing out that it was a shame that this was happening in the world’s biggest democracy, MY said that rather than feeling safe and secure under law and order, the people were rather feeling alienated and threatened. Due to the sensitivity of the situation and people, MY felt that the Indian forces “should not move in and around the area of Singphan, Lower Tiru, Upper Tiru, Namtai, Hotahoti, Oting and Pongkong village areas without proper

KVCU, MVDVA: The Konyak Village Councils’ Union and Mon District V.D.B.’s Association of Mon district has strongly condemned the cold-blooded murder of 14 innocent civilians and injuring several others at Oting village and Mon respectively. In the joint commendation note, the bodies stated that “the security force has deployed to protect the innocent civilian and to safeguard the welfare of the nation, but not to provoke the atmosphere and to kill and injure the innocent citizens of the country”. While stating that all the deceased and victims were neither involved with any insurgent groups nor the enemy of Indian army or any security force, the bodies said that they were innocent civilians and daily wagers. Therefore, they appealed to all the armed forces to “stop killing, harassing and torturing the innocent public of Mon district and Eastern Nagaland in particular and Nagaland state in general”. The bodies appealed to the centre to repeal AFSPA from Naga soil and high-level special investigation team (SIT) be set-up for immediate investigation of the incident for conveyance of justice as per the law of the land. They conveyed deepest condolences to all the bereaved families and wished for a speedy recovery to all the injured. Wangtin-led NSCN (R): Wangtin-led NSCN (Reformation) has strongly condemned the atrocious and ghastly act of the security forces against the innocent Nagas at Oting and Mon town. The group through its MIP said that it was too saddening and painful to see its Naga brothers soaked with blood, killed and maimed by the Indian Army. “This incident has once again brought to fore the real face of the Indian jawans and their high-handedness and how AFSPA has been misused to harass and batter the life of the Nagas” it stated. The eight playoff winners will advance to the last-16 stage. On Thursday, Napoli held off a spirited comeback bid by English club Leicester City to win 3-2 and progress as Group C runners-up, sending the third-placed Foxes into the UEFA Europa Conference League. Adam Ounas and Elif Elmas gave the home side a two-goal cushion by the 24th minute, but Leicester were level before the break, through Jonny Evans and Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall only for Elmas to score his second of the night, and Napoli’s decisive third, eight minutes after half-time. Meanwhile, Mikel Oyarzabal scored twice as Real Sociedad beat PSV Eindhoven 3-0 and leapfrogged their opponents to claim second place in Group B. Bruma clipped the crossbar for the visitors early on, but the crucial first goal came at the other end, Oyarzabal converting from the spot after Phillipp Mwene had blocked Adnan

In another match, Scotland’s Rangers denied French side Lyon a perfect record in Group A as they

Already cer tain of qualifying, Germany’s Eintracht Frankfurt, held 1-1 by Fenerbahce of Turkey,
were confirmed as Group D winners, thanks in part to Olympiacos’s 1-0 defeat at Antwerp. Lokomotiv Moscow to third place in Group E with a 1-0 win. Arkadiusz Milik scored the only goal with a well-placed header from a superb Cengiz Under corner in the 35th minute, the home side holding on despite losing Valentin Rongier to a second booking ten minutes from time. Both Braga and Crvena Zvezda progressed from Group F after their 1-1 draw in Portugal, Crvena Zvezda holding on for the point that
took them into the round of 16 as section winners. Both goals came from the penalty spot, Marko Gobeljic’s handball giving Galeno the chance to give the home side the advantage in the 52nd minute before Aleksandar Katai struck back after Radovan Pankov had been fouled by Diogo Leite. English club West Ham, already assured of the top spot in the group, went down 0-1 to Dinamo Zagreb. A stunning early strike
from Mislav Oršic secured Zagreb second place in Group H. Oršic blasted in an audacious effort just four minutes in, giving Alphonse Areola in the West Ham goal no chance. With the home side already through as group winners, chances were at a premium, and Dinamo held out in comfort to make sure of joining the London club in the knockout stage. Belgian club Genk lost 0-1 to Rapid Vienna of Austria on Thursday night. With this defeat, not only did Genk miss out on the chance to snatch second place in Group H, they found themselves out of Europe altogether as Rapid snatched the UEFA Europa Conference League spot with victory in Belgium. The visitors began brighter and had already tested the Belgian club’s goalkeeper Maarten Vandevoordt more than once by the time Robert Ljubicic rounded off a superb counterattack by firing into the top corner on 29 minutes. Genk pushed for a leveller in the second half, but substitute Paul Onuachu was unable to convert an addedtime header.

Jeremy Lalrinnunga wins gold at Odisha FC jump to 2nd spot with win over NE Utd Commonwealth Championships
VASCO, DEC 10 (AGENCIES): Jonathas Cristian scored a second-half goal to help Odisha FC jump to second place in the points table with a 1-0 win over NorthEast United FC in the 2021-22 Hero Indian Super League (ISL) at the Tilak Maidan Stadium in Vasco on Friday. Odisha now have nine points from four matches, three behind league leaders Mumbai City FC who have 12 points from five games. Nor thEast, meanwhile, dropped to eighth with four points from five games. Nor thEast United started on the front foot with Deshorn Brown dribbling past two defenders early on and firing wide from an acute angle. It was all about the Highlanders in the opening exchanges barring an Aridai Suarez curler that skimmed the crossbar and went out. Brown was at it
target after being fed by a lovely through ball from Aridai. Frenchman Mathias Coureur then failed to make the most of a free header, nodding wide from close range. The deadlock was finally broken in the 81st minute when two substitutes Thoiba Singh and Jonathas combined for a well-drilled goal. Thoiba, who came in place of Isaac Chhakchhuak in the 62nd minute, did well to cross for Jonathas whose drop header left a diving Mirshad with no chance. TASHKENT, DEC 10 (PTI): India’s teenage weightlifting sensation Jeremy Lalrinnunga could not breach his personal best mark but the effort of 305kg was enough to win the gold medal in the men’s 67kg category at the Commonwealth Championships, here on Friday. The 2018 Youth Olympics gold medallist lifter finished with a best effort of 305kg (141kg+164kg) in the men’s 67kg event. His personal best stands at 306kg (140kg+166kg) which came in 2019. The World Para Athletics Championships is set to be the biggest parasport event to take place in the French capital before the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games. The competition will be held at the Charlety Stadium which is a famil-

SYDNEY, DEC 10 (REUTERS): World number one Ash Barty will kick off her 2022 season at the Adelaide International Australian Open warm-up in the first week of January, tournament organisers said on Friday. The Wimbledon champion, who won the tournament in its inaugural year in 2020, last played competitively at the U.S. Open in early September before returning home to Australia. Barty, who was named WTA Player of the Year this week after winning five titles in 2021, will be joined at Memorial Drive by defending champion Iga Swiatek
Naomi Osaka, Emma Raducanu and Ash Barty
and former world number ones Garbine Muguruza and Karolina Pliskova. Australian Open champion Naomi Osaka and U.S. Open winner Emma Raducanu will headline the two women’s warm-up tourna-
ments taking place over two weeks at Melbourne Park, which have been dubbed the ‘Melbourne Summer Set’. Osaka, now ranked 13th in the world, also cut short her 2021 season after her exit from the U.S. Open
in a year when she withdrew from the French Open and skipped Wimbledon citing mental health issues. British teenager Raducanu will use the tournament to acclimatise to Australian conditions on her first visit to Melbourne Park as she looks to build on her sensational run to the title at Flushing Meadows. World number two Aryna Sabalenka and last year’s U.S. Open runner up Leylah Fernandez will also play in Adelaide, which will host nine out of the top 10 players in the women’s world rankings. Rafael Nadal, who has decided not to take part in the ATP Cup in Sydney in the first week
of the year, headlines the ATP 250 tournament in Melbourne from January 4-9, while Gael Monfils will be the big draw in the men’s tournament in Adelaide. World number one Novak Djokovic was listed as part of the Serbia team for the ATP Cup but his involvement in the Australian tennis season remains uncertain because of the vaccination requirements. Roger Federer, who shares the record of 20 Grand Slam titles with Djokovic and Nadal, has already confirmed that he will not be travelling to Australia as he recovers from knee surgeries.

In a match postponed from Wednesday night due to heavy snow in Bergamo, Villarreal survived some anxious moments as the Italians came back from 0-3 down to make it 2-3 but in the end, their fightback on Thursday fell short and the Spanish club progressed to the knockout rounds of the top-tier European club competition. a draw to finish second behind Manchester United in Group F and seal their place in the UEFA Champions League Round of 16. They started the match with seven points from five games with Atalanta on six both trailing United, who were at 11 after a draw with Young Boys Wednesday. But Unai Emery’s men won 2-3 against a hard-working Atalanta side, who even at 0-3 down were still in the match. Arnaut Danjuma (3, 51), with a double, and Étienne Capoue (42) scored Villarreal’s goals while Atalanta replied through Ruslan Malinovskyi (71) and Duvan Zapata (80). The match went Villarreal’s way from the
start and they came out firing on all cylinders. In the third minute, Dani Parejo sent a fantastic pass to Danjuma, who was clinical and finished calmly through goalkeeper Juan Musso’s legs to score the first goal of the tie. Atalanta continued to push forward despite going behind and were fired on by their fans. Villarreal goalkeeper Gero Rulli had to make a great save to deny Swiss midfielder Remo Freuler from the edge of the box. Villarreal were holding up well in defence and creating danger up front with Gerard Moreno getting involved in the middle of the pitch and Danjuma causing problems from long balls.

GENEVA, DEC 10 (AP): Boxing, weightlifting and modern pentathlon were set a target of about 18 months to make changes in order to keep their status as Olympic sports for the 2028 Los Angeles Games. The governing bodies of boxing and weightlifting were described as problem children by International Olympic Committee president Thomas Bach, who has long voiced concerns with the leadership of those sports and issues with corruption and doping. Modern pentathlon
has effectively been told by the IOC to remove equestrian jumping from the event, provoking a backlash from angry athletes. The high-profile incident of a coach striking a horse at the Tokyo Olympics has undermined modern pentathlon’s reputation despite more than 100 years in the Games since being created by IOC founder Pierre de Coubertin. All three sports have been left off the initial list of 28 on the 2028 program, which will be put to IOC
members for approval in February. The list of approved sports includes skateboarding, surfing and sports climbing. All three made successful Olympic debuts in Tokyo and look to be locked in for the future as the IOC chases younger audiences. It also sets them to receive a share of future Olympic broadcasting income, which is currently worth at least $15 million to each sport. The three sports left isolated Thursday still have a “pathway for inclusion” at the 2023 annual meeting of the IOC membership, Bach said. They need to “demonstrate to the satisfaction” of the IOC executive board they have made changes variously to the governance and organizational culture of the sports. Modern pentathlon also needs to replace horse riding with a more inclusive discipline accessible to young people worldwide.
