October 3, 2018. He said the School Education department had apprised NSF and ENSF representatives on September 10, 2020 about the status. The issue was also reviewed at the chief secretary’s level on September 14, 2020 and on October 6, 2020 on the actions taken by the department to fulfil the conditions stipulated in the cabinet decision. Sukhalu recalled that a meeting was also chaired by the chief secretary on September 9, 2020 with NSF and ENSF leaders where the position and the status of the issue was reiterated and the student leaders requested to re-consider and withdraw the proposed agitation scheduled from October (Cont’d on p-6) 12.

KOHIMA, OCT 11 (NPN): Against the backdrop of much speculation over signing of an agreement (between various Naga groups with the government of India) for solution to the protracted Naga political issue, expected within this year, the Joint Legislators’ Forum (JLF) on Naga issue has convened a consultative meeting with various apex Naga tribe hohos and NGOs on October 15. Close on the heels of Speaker of the Nagaland Legislative Assembly (NLA) Sharingain Longkumer informing media persons about the proposed consultative meeting, sources close to the 14 Apex Naga Tribal Hohos of Nagaland (14 ANTHN) said the tribe hohos have yet to decide whether to attend or not. It was learnt that NH, NMA, NSF, ENPO, ENWO and ENSF have confirmed to attend the October 15 meeting. It may be recalled, that the 14 apex Naga tribe hohos of Nagaland maintained that they “are the

stake holder of Nagas of Nagaland.” The 14 Naga tribe hohos of Nagaland on September 6 also clarified that they are not part of Naga Hoho but includes “Eastern Nagaland Peoples’ Organisation (ENPO), Central Nagaland Tribes Council (CNTC) and Tenyimi.” Western Sumi Hoho (WSH) had on October 8 issued a statement, expressing its “bewilderment” at the proposed October 15 meeting by the state government. Implying that the proposed meeting was an exercise in futility since the talks have concluded and only the final draft agreement yet to be signed, WSH said there was no logic in the proposal since even the 14 apex Naga tribes of Nagaland had “made their stand loud and clear.” WSH also reminded the ruling PDA coalition government that it should have instead prepared a proper roadmap with “concrete solution” by taking on board civil societies, mass-based organisations and churches when it was needed much earlier.

As of now, the legislators are split between PDA-led Joint Legislators’ Forum and the NPF-led Political Affairs Mission (PAM) further adding to the complication. It may also be mentioned that the Joint Legislators’ Forum that was constituted in 2012 with the objective of acting as facilitators for Naga political solution, has split down the middle with the opposition Naga People’s Front(NPF) legislators quitting the forum over differences with the ruling Progressive Democratic Alliance (PDA) coalition, notably the NDPP. The NPF has constituted its own forum- Political Affairs Mission (PAM)- with similar objective of facilitating a meeting ground for the main Naga stakeholdersNSCN (I-M) and 7-member NNPGs- towards one broadbased agreement. PAM had met representatives of NSCN (I-M) and Working Committee of the Naga National Political Groups (NNPGs) besides 14 Apex Naga tribe hohos of Nagaland and others in its effort to bring all on board.

KOHIMA, OCT 11 (NPN): Following the State Government’s alleged inaction on their demand to streamline Sarba Siksha Abhiyan and Rashtriya Madhyamik Siksha Abhiyan teachers of 2010 & 2013 batches into State Education Cadre, Naga Students’ Federation (NSF) and Eastern Naga Students’ Federation (ENSF) have resolved to go ahead with their first phase of agitation-State-wide ban on movement of government-registered vehicles from October 12. And this comes even after the State government’s assurance that it was doing its part and appealed to both the student unions to call off their proposed stir.

Addressing a press conference here on Sunday, NSF president Ninoto Awomi said the ban would commence from 6 am onwards and enforced by volunteers by following COVID-19 SOPs. He said keys of government-registered vehicles found moving during the ban would be taken away by the volunteers, while seized vehicles would be released only after the demands were met by the government. He added that the ban would be enforced for an indefinite period. Mentioning that a meeting was held between NSF and ENSF leaders on Sunday following the government’s letter, Awomi informed the media that the

NEW DELHI, OCT 11 (AGENCIES): Preparations already on for the festive season, Union health minister Dr Harsh Vardhan Sunday gave the people a reality check. “There is no need to congregate in large numbers to prove your faith or your religion... You can pray to your gods at your homes. I would suggest that all of you celebrate festivals with your families,” he said, pointing to coronavirus which is still on rampage. “No religious leaders of any religion say that festivals should be celebrated by putting lives in danger... no Gods say you need to go to big pandals to pray. If you know there is fire outside and you still go out in the fire in the name of religion -- what’s the point of such festivals,” the minister said in a strong message. With Durga Puja, Dussehra, Diwali and Chhath Puja around the corner, there is concern about Covid numbers spiking as people drop the use of all safety norms. On October 6, Health Secretary Rajesh Bhushan had told the media that there has been a “huge spike in cases in Kerala for several days and a lot of it has to do with the Onam festivities”.

(PTI): Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday launched the physical distribution of property cards under the ‘SVAMITVA’ (ownership) scheme via video conferencing, and asserted that it is a “historic move” that will transform rural India. This will pave the way for villagers to use property as a financial asset for taking loans and other financial benefits, and end disputes among villagers over land ownership, he said. On the occasion, Modi also interacted with several beneficiaries of the Survey of Villages and Mapping with Improvised Technology in Village Areas (SVAMITVA) scheme and said it is big step for the country towards becoming ‘aatmanirbhar’ (self-reliant). “Experts across the world have stressed that property ownership rights play a big role in a country’s

house was not satisfied with the government’s response. He said the meeting felt that the government would drag the issue indefinitely, hence leaders of both the organisations decided to go ahead with the first phase of agitation. ENSF president Sepili L Sangtam regretted that even after lapse of the 30-day ultimatum and another 10 days, the government failed to act on their demand. He said the two student bodies were not satisfied with the government’s assurance and appeal. Meanwhile, police, administration, medical and fire & emergency services have been exempted from the purview of the agitation. (Cont’d on p-6)

highlight the significance of the measure and noted that only one-third population globally has legal record of the properties they own. The youth living in villages now can avail of bank loans against their properties to start out on their own, he said, asserting it is necessary for a developing country like India to have clear land ownership rights. Property rights will give the youth self-confidence that can lead to their self-reliance, he said. The beneficiaries are from 763 villages across six states, including 346 from Uttar Pradesh, 221 from Haryana, 100 from Maharashtra, 44 from Madhya Pradesh, 50 from Uttarakhand and two from Karnataka. Modi said his government will try to give every household similar property cards over the next three-four years.

DIMAPUR, OCT 11 (NPN): Security forces arrested four persons, allegedly involved in the October 10 incident when two Chinesemade grenades were hurled inside the Assam Rifles Dhansiri transit camp near Purana Bazaar area, Dimapur. According to highly placed sources, Assam Rifles personnel initially arrested one suspect after which three more persons were apprehended. No further details were made known till the time of filing this report. It may be recalled that two hand grenades were lobbed inside the Assam Rifles Dhansiri transit camp on Saturday morning. One of the grenade exploded while the other failed to explode and was found by the police BDDS personnel. No one was injured in the incident.

DIMAPUR, OCT 11 (NPN): NPF’s Political Affairs Mission (PAM) said it would reach out to all groups who are yet to join the peace process once tangible progress was made in its endeavour to bring NSCN (I-M) and seven NNPGs to a certain level of understanding. In a communiqué, PAM said both NSCN (I-M) and seven NNPGs too have agreed in principle to come together and discuss across the table as proposed by it in separate meetings with both the groups. Mentioning that its recent trip to Delhi had been quite encouraging as it had been briefed by representatives of Government of India (GoI) that the political dialogue had been put back on track despite some hitch for some time, PAM claimed that the collective leadership of NSCN (I-M) had assured of keeping their words by

participating in the efforts of the mission to bring the two negotiating groups sit across the table. PAM said it would figure out the date and venue very soon in consultation with both NSCN (I-M) and the NNPGs. In this regard, it appealed to every believer, Naga individual and organisations to uphold “us” in their prayer and extend their cooperation so as to make this particular event a stepping stone for Naga unity and reconciliation. Furthermore, during the course of interaction with various civil society organisations (CSOs), PAM said it was reconfirmed that every Naga wanted an early solution while also noting that past agreements and accord had brewed dissensions into the society instead of uniting “our people”. After having a series of consultations with various

CSOs, NGOs and the two Naga negotiating groups, the mission said it could conclude that all Nagas are united over i) an early solution that was acceptable, honourable and inclusive, ii) one solution, one accord and iii) that all Naga negotiating groups should come together and discuss across the table to make the reality of one solution and one accord. PAM said it had been relentlessly working to bring every Naga nationalist group on board so that no one was left out in the proposed accord. “The aspiration for an honourable, acceptable and inclusive solution has been the guiding spirit of NPF-PAM. It will continue to pursue reconciliation among the Naga nationalist groups in the true sense of term, which is a necessity if we are to survive as one people,” the communiqué asserted.

BJP district presidents question removal without notice Nagaland COVID tally crosses 7000-mark Correspondent

KOHIMA, Oct 11 (NPN): Internal dissension continued to rock BJP Nagaland unit as three district presidents have now alleged that they were removed unconstitutionally by State unit president, Temjen Imna Along and demanded that Along resign in order to restore the party’s image. Seyiekhrielie Nagi, Nucutso Ruho and T. Chongshen Chang who were removed as presidents of Kohima, Phek district and Tuensang district respectively on Sunday told the media that eight district presidents of Kohima, Tuensang, Peren, Wokha, Kiphire, Noklak , Phek and Mon and one (Aboi organisation) president had demanded the removal of Along. Seyiekhrielie Nagi said

the current crisis began in April this year, claiming that due to the hardship and challenges faced by party workers in the districts, the district presidents decided to share their grievances with the State president and work for betterment of the party workers. However, when an appointment was fixed on behalf of the district presidents on May 28 this year, Nagi alleged that Along refused to meet them, citing the

pandemic. Thereafter, they met deputy chief minister Y Patton to share the grievances of party workers, he added. “It was in his second tenure as president, that we came to know who he (Along) was, so we decided to start a movement seeking his removal from the post of party president,” he explained. However, in a short span of time, Phek district president was also removed,

followed by Tuensang and Kohima district presidents. Mentioning that he was removed as the district president on September 28, Nagi said they were not appointed by the State president but elected by election commission constitutionally. He alleged that new office-bearers were appointed without district president’s recommendation as per the party norms and out of his own will. Nucutso Ruho, who was also removed as Phek district president on June 23, questioned his removal without any official notification and alleged that he was unceremoniously removed by the State BJP president. Ruho also said that he was elected as district president as per the party’s constitution and elections conducted by the returning (Cont’d on p-6) officer.

COVID: Parents in Assam not ready to send kids to school

Parents have told teacher that they will not risk the lives of their children by sending them to schools. Guwahati, Oct 11 (PTI): Many parents in Assam are determined not to send their wards back to schools amid COVID-19 crisis even if the institutions reopen from next month, a cross-section of guardians said. Though no order has been issued, the state government is likely to consider reopening of schools for students of Class 6 onwards from November 1, a senior official of the education department said. Some of the parents along with teachers suggested that schools should remain shut for the entire year and the government should declare 2020 as “COVID-19 Year”. As per the Centre’s latest Standard Operating Procedure (SOP), the Centre has allowed states and

Union Territories to take a decision on reopening schools in a graded manner from October 15. Many school authorities are of the view that the government’s decision to reopen educational institutions is a “bit early” considering the rising number of infections and mounting fatalities. Already students of Class 9 to 12 are permitted to visit schools on a voluntary basis, with written consent of their parents, for seeking guidance from teachers. “I will not send my daughter until there is a vaccine or the situation improves. No parent wants to risk the life of children,” Anil Kumar Jha, former special DGP of Assam, told PTI. Jha, whose daughter studies in Class 2 of a private school in the state capital,

said, “Losing an academic year is not a big issue for school children. The central government can bring out a notification in this regard and can easily give age relaxations in job or retirement against loss of this particular year.” Expressing similar sentiments, Assam Public Service Commission member Sanjib Gohain Boruah, whose daughter is a Class 12 student, said opening of schools post the festive season is a matter of concern as COVID-19 positive cases are expected to go up. “After months of staying at home, the children will naturally be excited to meet their friends and may forget to maintain norms of social distancing, necessary for containing the spread of the infection,” he said. Boruah favoured continuation of online learning for a few more months till there is a visible decline in COVID-19 cases even though he agreed that benefits of classroom teaching cannot be denied. His daughter Anuragini Gohain Boruah said she is upset to miss the fun of the last year of her school life. “Initially, I was happy with it. But now at times, I suffer from headaches due to staring at the computer screen for long hours. I wish to go back to normal classes,” she added.

They will contest the by-elections from Wangoi AC in Imphal West district, Singhat (Churachandpur district), Saitu (Kangpokpi district) and Wangjing-Tentha (Thoubal district) respectively. bringing joy and peace to many. Further, he also pointed out several who have achieved tremendous success in music during the pandemic, and acknowledged them for bringing laurels to the state. Pelenuo making it to top 5 of Nexa Music, etc. He maintained that the pandemic was a moment of pride and productivity for Naga musicians, in brushing up their musical creativity and adding more skills to their music. 10 last. Except Md Abdul Nasir who vacated Lilong AC of Thoubal district, the remaining five later joined the BJP. There were reports that Nasir will contest the by-election as an independent candidate and the ruling party will support him. Workers and supporters of BJP in Lilong AC have however strongly demandd fielding a party candidate in the by-election well ahead of the announcement of the by-election schedules. The exclusion of the name of the party candidate to be contested from the Assembly irked the party workers of the segment. On Sunday, irked workers and supporters took to the streets at various places to denounce nondeclaration of the name of the party candidate for the Assembly segment. They lit up fires on the road to disturb normal vehicular movement on the highway and other inter-district roads. “Don’t look down upon minority” shouted the protesters gathered at Lilong Bazar located on the side of NH-2 (Imphal-Moreh road) and elsewhere, hundreds of youth workers and supporters among them. The protesters alleged leaders of the state unit behind non-

declaration of name of the party candidate for the Assembly segment by the Central leaders. They said that it was due to non-recommendation that the Central leader did not declare the name of the party candidate for the AC. Non-recommendation was nothing but looking down on by the minority community by the BJP, they went on to allege. Lilong AC is one of the Assembly segments dominated by minority Muslim community. The protesters demanded the state BJP president and chief minister to clarify on the matter and threatened to continue the protest unless the two leaders clarify on the matter. They further warned of boycotting the by-election if their demand is not considered by the ruling party. It may be mentioned that when when Md Abdul Nasir did not join the BJP even as other five joined the saffron fold, there were talks of reaching an agreement that BJP will back Nasir in the by-election by not fielding a party candidate. Nasir is likely to contest the by-election to retain the Assembly which remained vacant after he resigned.

necessary instructions to the district administration for the immediate and indefinite stoppage of the proposed construction,” the letter read. The Survey of India has been requested to facilitate a joint spot verification involving both the Mizoram and Tripura governments

to resolve the inter-state boundary issue at the earliest, it said. Sahu said he has received the letter and will look into the matter. Mizoram shares a 66km border with Tripura. Phuldungsei, which has a population of over 600, falls under Kanchanpur sub-division in North Tripura district. However, the eastern side of the village falls in Mizoram, according to the Mamit district administration. The Tripura government had in August claimed that the names of its 130

residents living in Phuldungsei were found in Mizoram’s electoral roll and they possessed ration cards of both the states. Mamit Deputy Commissioner Lalrozama had said those 130 people are residents of Mizoram who live on the eastern side mof the village, which is the traditional territory of Mizoram. He had said village election council elections were also held in Phuldungsei during the rural and urban body polls held in Mizoram in August but all the candidates in the village were elected unopposed.

Society adrift

wo recent incidents in Dimapur- the killing of a truck driver on September 22 and the bomb attack on a camp of the Assam Rifles on October 10- expose the dark underbelly of society, besieged by anti-social elements. These two incidents are not the only instances. There have been many similar instances in the past but which go largely unreported. The police itself has admitted that most crimes go unreported because no complaints are lodged. There has to be many reasons why victims don’t complain but the admittance, in itself calls for a serious introspection of why is there a passive resistance to such incidents. Probably one of the reasons, is that victims acknowledge they face a herculean task for justice when accused persons are let off only to hound them. Such elements make up a small proportion of individuals and groups but bring misery and despair to the larger community. Crimes cannot be solved simply by putting offenders inside the lock-up. Treating this syndrome cannot be done by police alone but requires an honest admission as well as conviction by society that it can no longer afford to be a passive onlooker but needs to actively get involved. Since the anti-social syndrome has been afflicting society for many decades; there is a serious need to acknowledge that there are factors that have contributed to it. It is easy to blame the government and in particular, the police for the malaise in society. To begin with, it is undeniable that criminalisation of politics is primarily responsible for the breakdown of social values and consequently, loss of constitutional authority. However, it would be naive to suggest that politics is the main culprit. Politics is also about people and it is they who elect those who have shown scant regard for the rule of law. It begins when there is a system of barter and exchange for votes which is continued to government formation. This is a common phenomenon throughout India. However, the difference is that in other states, people are not confused about what is legal and not legal. Similarly, in other states, the police is not confused about what constitutes crime as per IPC. In Nagaland, once a politician had thrown in his bizarre definition that politically -related crimes cannot be treated the same with ordinary crimes. People in general tend to hold everyonepoliticians, armed elements, bureaucrats, mafia dons- responsible for the rot. On the other hand, law enforcement agencies express grave concern that some elements and groups, masquerading as crusaders for justice are themselves not above board when it comes to sharing a major part of the blame. There has been too much compromises made to pressure lobbies under whatever banner because politicians and bureaucrats and those in authority want to be in their good books. This passive resistance by those supposed to protect the interests of those lacking patronage and influences has led to loss of direction coupled with loss of moral compass. The loss of trust in institutions of authority due to whatever factors can be explained by a word called ‘asociality’ afflicting society, where the voice of the few people is heard while those of the voiceless is never heard.

DailyDevotion God’s Silence— Then What?

When He heard that he was sick, He stayed two more days in the place where He was. —John 11:6 Has God trusted you with His silence— a silence that has great meaning? God’s silences are actually His answers. Just think of those days of absolute silence in the home at Bethany! Is there anything comparable to those days in your life? Can God trust you like that, or are you still asking Him for a visible answer? God will give you the very blessings you ask if you refuse to go any further without them, but His silence is the sign that He is bringing you into an even more wonderful understanding of Himself. Are you mourning before God because you have not had an audible response? When you cannot hear God, you will find that He has trusted you in the most intimate way possible— with absolute silence, not a silence of despair, but one of pleasure, because He saw that you could withstand an even bigger revelation. If God has given you a silence, then praise Him— He is bringing you into the mainstream of His purposes. The actual evidence of the answer in time is simply a matter of God’s sovereignty. Time is nothing to God. For a while you may have said, “I asked God to give me bread, but He gave me a stone instead” (see Matthew 7:9). He did not give you a stone, and today you find that He gave you the “bread of life” (John 6:35). A wonderful thing about God’s silence is that His stillness is contagious— it gets into you, causing you to become perfectly confident so that you can honestly say, “I know that God has heard me.” His silence is the very proof that He has. As long as you have the idea that God will always bless you in answer to prayer, He will do it, but He will never give you the grace of His silence. If Jesus Christ is bringing you into the understanding that prayer is for the glorifying of His Father, then He will give you the first sign of His intimacy— silence.

Rejuvenation may take longer as WB, ILO, bankers see blues

I

ndia is in dire crisis as economic recovery is slow; youth lose 41 lakh jobs during lockdown, employment uncertain, and global extreme poverty to engulf 150 million by 2021. The latest World Bank (WB) and International labour Organisation-Asian Development (ILO-ADB) separate reports have stated that the global situation is grim; the youth are severely challenged in Asia and Pacific due to pandemic. The worst hits are the construction and farm sector workers. ‘Tackling the COVID19 youth employment crisis in Asia and the Pacific’ by the ILO-ADB, calls on governments in the region to adopt urgent, large-scale and targeted measures to generate jobs for youth, keep education and training on track, and to minimize future scarring of more than 660 million (66 crore) young people in the region. The younger they are, 15-24 years are hit harder than their immediate seniors – 25 and older - in the immediate crisis and risk bearing higher longer-term economic and social costs, says the ADB report. The WB stating that

world has to evolve a “different economy” says it noted that “the lack of recent data for India severely hinders the ability to monitor global poverty. Absence of recent data on India, one of the economies with the largest population creates substantial uncertainty around the current estimates of global poverty”. The report says job disruptions are due to reduced working hours and earnings, job losses for paid workers and self-employed and difficulties in getting jobs for fresh graduates. The reports are mere tip of the iceberg. The job and wage losses have become the virtual norm of the economy. The unlock was supposed to improve the situation but job cuts continue. Recently Accenture, a leading IT solutions company as well as BPO provider, having over 5 lakh employees lays off 5 percent. It comes to 25,000 workers being sacked in India. Other IT companies have sacked a large force. The IT sector sacks thousand during lockdown and those jobs are not yet restored. The less is talked about the education sector. Thousands of private

schools closed down without paying any compensation. Private universities quietly dismiss faculty and staff or reduce their salaries by 30 to 80 percent. Some who have not done so have not paid their salaries since March, even in national capital itself. There is not a sector that is not hit. Automobile sector is yet to get back its sheen. The car maker MG looks for new contracts with M&M and Volkswagen. Overall the road transport sector, employing 60 lakh people, is not doing well as is indicated by decline in sales of diesel by minus 5.5 percent. It means Shivaji the sector whether trucks or passenger transport, is far below normal operations. India’s small and tiny sectors are yet to resume their work except sporadically. The hotel and tourism industry having about 5 crore workers and business of Rs 15 lakh crore suffered heavily. Except for small maintenance staff most has dismissed the employees. The Federation of Association in Indian Tourism and Hospitality (FAITH) estimated at initial lockdown a loss of Rs 5 lakh crore and later revised it to Rs 10

lakh crore. Many sold their establishments or have put it on sale block. The latest WB report is not encouraging. It says, “The slowdown in India is expected to depress manufacturing, exporting industries and the construction sectors, dependant on migrant workers, is also likely to experience a protracted slowdown due to a limited pipeline of public sector infrastructure projects”. It is a suggestion to the government to strengthen infrastructure and make more people-friendly policies. It says that even 2021 Indian GDP Sarkar is estimated to contract by 9.6 percent, a sharp cut from the June forecast of 3.2 percent due to the lockdown and income shocks. It also says that previous slowdowns were different from the forced lockdowns. Most previous ones were due to fall in investments. This time the lockdown has affected private consumption, backbone of demand in the Indian sub-continent and a core indicator of welfare. The consumption declined by 10 percent because of increased poverty. The remittances both national and international

declined accelerating loss of livelihoods. The WB has lauded some of the reliefs like free food grain and economic incentives but says that more universal social protection is needed to be done for the informal sectors. The job losses in small and informal businesses have been more brutal. Except in Bhutan, Bangladesh and Pakistan all others in the sub-continent have negative growth. In Indian context most reliefs were routed through banks since 2009 incentivisation. The Indian bankers say that they are to bear the maximum brunt of the lockdown reliefs. The banking operations have become more expensive with the introduction of Jandhan accounts and introduction of digital payments. More the freebie accounts are opening more the banking is crumbling. It is hurting their deposits, increasing their operational costs. The latest covid19 fiat from the government for extending interest waiver is to add heavy costs estimated at $ 1 billion. The balances sheets are to be hit further as the banks are saddled with $ 120 billion of bad loans.

During the past three years it has seen several restructuring. Still the banking sector is on a razor’s edge. So the RBI preferred not to tinker with the interest rates at its Monetary Poclicy Committee meeting though ideally it should have raised it as inflation is galloping. Expecting distressed banks to come to the help of the sagging economy is a bit too much. As the government finances are tumbling more are the banks getting under stress. For an economy to take a turn over as expected by WB, ILO and ADB, innovative policies are required. So far the government has resorted to populist methods with an eye on popular support. Concrete steps are yet to be taken. The WB expects a rebound after two years that is only in 2021-22 provided all covid19 restrictions are lifted. The approach is cautious. But historically whatever comes down has to go up but it may take longer as most systems have to be rebuilt, banking protected and boosted, taxation system rationalized, state government finances put in order and household incomes come back to normal.

Post-mortem

C

Naga Nation’s covenant

ovenant is a deed of agreement, engagement or condition made between two or more people and the most common uses of covenant in the Bible are between God and His people. In the English Bible the word, covenant is first used in between God and Noah that there should not be another flood (Gen 9:12-16) however of such agreement or condition of obedience was first made between God and Adam when he was put in the garden of Eden (Gen 2: 16-17) . Throughout the Bible, God kept on renewing the covenant with people from time to time and entering into agreement or covenant with God, the choice is given between a blessing or a curse; if the people obey or keep the terms of agreement, covenant or commandment, God bless the people to be greater than any other Nations on the earth (Deut 28:1-14) including other blessing as fruits of obedience to the covenant but if they disobey or break the terms of covenant, all the disasters and evil things will happen to them and destroy them as consequences of disobedience to the covenant by bringing a Nation against them whose language they do not know (Duet 28:15-68). Once the people have entered into the covenant with God and have accepted its obligations or terms of the covenant, the Lord confirms them as His people and to be their God as He has promised to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob their descendants to come (Deut 28:12-15). As for our Naga Nation, it is reported that many years ago at the start of our Naga National movement, our Naga National leaders read out some Bible verses and raised the Naga National flag and made a covenant with God and therefore if we are not moving as per covenant, we need to repent and return to Him and faithfully begin to obey the terms of the covenant or the curses mentioned in the Bible will keep on happening in our land. Whether we like it or not we have to research our hearts over the meanings of the terms or conditions of the agreement that had been made with God to make our land to be a Christian Nation but our way of doing things are going away from the line of covenant. The situation in our land is like that of the situation that was prophesied by the prophet Micah that there is no an honest person in the land, no one is loyal to God....... everyone hunts down his fellow countrymen. They are all experts in doing evil.... the influential men tell them what he wants and so they scheme together. Even the best and most honest of them are as worthless as weeds. The day has come when

God will punish the people as He warned them through their prophets...... they are in confusion.....(Micah 7:1-5). It was reported that in the beginning of the Naga National movement, gun or any other weaponries to shed blood were not used but pleaded our Naga rights with Indian leaders for some years by peaceful means but it was not possible and so later on, our Naga leaders were compelled to raise the Naga Army to fight Indian Army with gun and other weaponries against the forceful occupation of our land by India Army. Till today, God is not given any revelation to any visioners or prophets to put to stop in pursuing the rights of the Naga Nations nor He does not tell any Christians to withdraw themselves from the services of Indian army, Israel army, American army, U.N.O. security forces but given many revelation to many believers that Nagas should not fight among themselves and further revealed that they will succeed not by might nor by power but by His spirit (Zach 4:6). In obedience of the Lord, Gideon reduced the size of his army from the strength of 30000 to 300 only, to fight the big sized army but he won the war (Judges 7 and 8) because he obeyed the voice of the Lord. We Nagas are also to obey the voice of the Lord as of the earlier people of God. We know that obedience is better than sacrifice (I Samuels 15:22) and moreover we learn from the New testament of the Bible that our enemies are not human being but evil forces (Eph 6:12) and therefore in our fight we cannot use world's weapons or man's weapons but God's mightiness (2 Cor. 10:4). Cursed be the name that trust in men and make flesh his arm and whose heart departs from the Lord ( Jer. 17:5) and blessed in the man who trust and hope are in the Lord (Jer. 17:7). The name of Jesus is above every name, there is no other name above the name of Jesus, all that has got the name now and name to come from heaven or earth will bow down to the name of Jesus (Phil. 2:9-10, Eph 1:21) and every tongue should confess that Jesus is Lord to the glory of God the Father (Phil. 2:11) therefore it is a commandment of God for us to take the Lordship of Jesus Christ and act upon His teachings to love our enemies and do good to them that hate us (Luke 6:27). As of in the time of Josiah, king of Judah searched the contents of the covenant, we Nagas are also to search the contents of the Naga Nation's covenant made many years ago. The king

, Josiah sent the court secretary, Shaphan to the high priest, Hilkiah and he told to the former that he had discovered the book of the law and it was delivered to the king Josiah when the Court Secretary read aloud the contents of the covenant to the king and when he heard the words of the covenant being read, he tore his clothes in dismay and told some of his officials and priests to go and consult the Lord for him and for all people of Judah about the teachings of the book, Huldah, a woman prophet revealed the following message of the Lord, ' I am going to punish Jerusalem and all its people as written in the book that the king has read...They have rejected me...... stirred up my anger by all they have done. My anger is aroused against Jerusalem and it will not die down. As for the king himself, this is what I the Lord God of Israel say: you listen to what is written in the book and repented and humbled yourself before me tearing your clothes and weeping, when you heard how I threatened to punish Jerusalem and its people, I will make it a terrifying sight, a place whose name people will use as a curse. But I have heard your prayer and your punishment which I am going to bring on Jerusalem will not come until after your death ( 2 King 22: 3-20). King Josiah summoned all the leaders of Judah and Jerusalem accompanied by the priest and the prophets and all the rest of the people, rich and poor alike. Before them all, the king read aloud the whole contents of the covenant book which was discovered in the temple. He stood by the royal column and made a covenant with Lord to obey Him, to keep his law and commands with all his heart, soul and to put into practice the demands attached to the covenant as written in the book. And all the people promised to keep the covenant ( 2 King 23:1-3). The king obeyed the laws and put the writings into actions. There had never been a king like him before who served the Lord with all his heart, mind and strength obeying all the laws of covenant, nor has there been a king like him before (2 King 23:25). Our Naga's covenant was also made as of the earlier people of God using the words of living God from the Bible and reported to have sworn in with the following Bible verses :(1).Mathew 6:33-First seek the Kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added unto you. ( 2).1Peter 2:9 - you are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, holy nation a peculiar people chosen to proclaim the

wonderful acts of God, who called you out of darkness into his own marvelous light (3).Romans10:8 - Is it true that they did not hear the message? Of course they did for the scripture says: the sound of their voice went out to all the world; their words reached the ends of the earth. (4).Isaiah 1:1-10 - The vision of Isaiah .... Cattle know who owned them donkey know where their master feeds them... but my people Israel do not understand... You are doomed...why do you keep on rebelling? While you look on foreigners take over your land and bring everything to ruin. If the Lord almighty had not let some of the people survive Jerusalem would have been totally destroyed... Jerusalem your rulers and your people are like those of Sodom and Gomorrah. Listen what the Lord is saying to you. Pay attention to what our God is teaching you. (5). John 14:14 - if you ask anything in my name, I will do it. After reading out the above Bible verses, the Naga National flag was raised and pledged to make Nagas a Christian Nation. Therefore, the above Bible verses are the contents of the covenant of our Naga nation as of Moses was asked to write down the words because on the basis of those words, God was making covenant with His people ( Exodus 34:27) whether we like

it or not or road is easy or hard, the living words have been kept as the National pledges or agreement with God therefore they are to be obeyed or followed as life and dead are in the power of the tongue ( Proverbs 18:21) and we are snared by the words of our mouth (Proverb 6 :2), we had sworn in by reading the Bible verses as covenant and if we turned away from them, the confusions, hatred or evil deed will continue to occur in our land because after making covenant with God, the people will be cursed if disobeyed or broke the covenant but blessings if we obey or follow the terms of the covenant. As our people want our land to be a Christian Nation standing on biblical words as covenant with God and summing up the contents of the covenant to "Nagaland for Christ", we as Naga Christian have to examine ourselves once again whether we are standing on the covenant or straying away from it. Heaven and earth will pass away but my words shall not pass away (Mt. 24:35) and we cannot rewrite the Bible but we have to stand on the word of God to seek first the kingdom of God and rest of the things will be added unto us (Mt. 6:33). We began the Naga National movement with Bible and we expect the ending with Bible to have victory. Dr. Kevesiei Chakhesang, Senior Pastor, Christian Worship Centre, Dimapur

Observation of World Engineering Day on 4th March

Sir,

The Federation of Nagaland State Engineering Service Associations (FONSESA) would like to draw your kind attention to the following. We learn that the World Federation of Engineering Organizations (WFEO) under the auspices of UNESCO, has proposed 4th March as World Engineering Day, the FONSESA has deliberated on the matter and decided to give our support for the same. The UNESCO, in its 40th General Conference held in Paris, France on 27th November 2019 has adopted the resolution to proclaim the 4th March of every year as a World Engineering Day for Sustainable Development. This proposal was put up by the WFEO and has so far, reportedly received support from 80+ Engineering Organizations from more than 40+ nations around the world. The FONSESA feels that the Engineering fraternity of INDEF can also join with the rest of the world to universally celebrate the contributions made by engineers towards the development of the nation. More details about WED are attached IN Annexure-I, impetus for WED in Annexure-II. We propose that if not already done so, INDEF may also formally extend its support to WFEO to commemorate 4th March every year, as World Engineering Day for Sustainable Development. Andhra Pradesh CM complains to CJI against sitting SC judge AMARAVATI, OCT 11 (AGENCIES): In an unprecedented move, Andhra Pradesh government has complained to Chief Justice SA Bobde, about the alleged intervention of a sitting Supreme Court judge to protect the interests of opposition Telugu Desam Party (TDP). Ajeya Kallam, principal advisor to Chief Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy, said the government placed material before the CJI citing the proximity of the judge with N Chandrababu Naidu and his interventions to protect the interests of TDP and its party men. He said the government informed Bobde about the alleged judicial impropriety of the judge, while he was the judge of the High Court in passing orders favouring Dammalapati Srinivas, advocate general during the TDP regime. “Government placed material before the CJI about the recent happenings and orders passed by the High Court”, he added, citing the direct influence exerted by the judge over the proceedings of the High Court. The state government has also apprised Bobde about the recent High Court orders with respect to the alleged Amaravati land scam. In the details and an-

an alarm. The notification issued by the centre on the request of the state government had asked the CBI to probe rape, murder and atrocity and “any attempt, abetment and/or conspiracy, in relation to or in connection with such offence(s) and/or for any other offence committed in the course of the same transaction or arising out of the same facts”. “The complainant had

alleged that on September 14, 2020 the accused tried to strangulate his sister in the millet field. The case has been registered by CBI on the request of Uttar Pradesh Government and further Notification from Government of India,” CBI Spokesperson RK Gaur said. M e a n w h i l e, C o n gress leader Rahul Gandhi sharpened his attack on the Yogi Adityanath dispensation over the alleged rape and murder of the Dalit woman. In a tweet, he said, “The CM & his police say no one was raped because for them, and many other Indians, she was NO ONE”. The former Congress chief also said the “shameful truth” was that many Indians do not consider Dalits, Muslims and tribals to be human. He also tagged a media report which asked why police was denying rape when the woman had repeatedly reported that she was raped.

nexures placed before the CJI, the state government redacted the FIR information lodged on Srinivas, his family members and others, obeying the High Court`s order, mandating no discussion on it anywhere. “In respectful compliance with the orders passed by the High Court in WP No. 16468/2020 dated September 15. However, all material concerning the said issue has been placed before the CJI,” said Kallam. Government furnished the material before Bobde on Thursday, along with a covering letter from Reddy. “The government shall undertake such compliances, including in the form of affidavits before the Supreme Court in regard to the above and proceed further in the matter,” he observed. The principal advisor said that the covering letter written by Reddy itself demonstrates the enormous reverence the chief minister and the state government have towards the judiciary. “The effort is only to sensitise the Supreme Court about the acts of a few individual judges. The CM and the government seek to reiterate its abiding compliance with the laws, the Constitution and the respectful deference to all the institutions of the state,” Kallam added.

sider Dalits, Muslims and tribals to be human. “The CM & his police say no one was raped because for them, and many other Indians, she was NO ONE,” the former Congress chief tweeted. He also tagged a media report which asked why police was denying rape when the woman repeatedly reported rape. The Yogi Adityanath government is fighting severe criticism for its han-

dling of the case, particularly after the local police burnt the woman’s body at night without the family’s approval. However, officials said the cremation was done “as per the wishes of the family”. The state government has said that some people were trying to foment caste tensions in the aftermath of the incident. Quoting an FSL (forensic science laboratory) report, it has denied the rape charge.

‘Secure the leadership of Bihar with Nitish’ GAYA/ PATNA, OCT 11 (PTI): BJP chief JP Nadda said on Sunday that the Nitish Kumar government took care of the people of Bihar amid the COVID-19 pandemic, asserting that it is important that the leadership of the state is secured with him. Addressing an election rally at the historic Gandhi Maidan in Gaya, Nadda listed the development works done by the NDA government at the Centre in the last six years in the state. “Nitish Kumar took care of the people during the COVID-19 pandemic. Financial assistance was also provided by his government to those outside the state,” he said. “Leadership of India is secured in the hands of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and it is important that the leadership of Bihar is secured with Nitish Kumar,” he added. Nadda said that only four medical colleges were there in Bihar, but in the last six years, the state got 14 medical colleges and work is going on for 11 others. “New dimensions of development are being written in Bihar and it is our responsibility to drive this development,” he said. Nadda is on a day-long visit to the state to strategise the BJP’s poll campaign. He arrived on a special plane in Patna where he was given a rousing welcome by party workers outside the airport. Nadda then visited the renowned Hanuman temple in the city and offered prayers.

PM attacks rivals for opposing farm laws Says middlemen powered their politics NEW DELHI, OCT 11 (PTI): Asserting that his government has done more for villages in the past six years than what was done in the preceding six decades, Prime Minister Narendra Modi Sunday flayed those opposing the new farm laws, saying their politics was powered by brokers and middlemen, and accused them of using “foul language” and spreading “lies” in attacking the Centre. Farmers are not going with those who have opposed the “historic” reforms enacted by his government, Modi said in a reference to the three contentious agriculture laws, which have been opposed by the Congress and other parties, and asserted the country will not waver from this path. Speaking at a programme to launch the physical distribution of property cards under the ‘SVAMITVA’ (ownership) scheme via video conferencing, he referred to a number of projects, including opening of bank accounts, building toilets and houses, cooking gas scheme and electrification, to highlight his government’s measures to develop villages and improving the living standards of the residents therein. While it was always said that the nation’s soul lives in its villages, the rural India was left to fend for itself by those who ruled the country earlier, Modi said in a swipe at the Congress. Many people don’t

want villages, the poor, the farmer and the labourer to be ‘aatmanirbhar’ (selfreliant), the prime minister said and added that his government’s measures to empower them, including by directly transferring money to farmers and others, has hit the middleman hard by wiping out their source of illegitimate earnings. Without naming the opposition, he said it is upset not for farmers but for itself as it was for long strengthened by the power of middlemen, brokers and commission agents. People of the country have begun destroying the Opposition’s web of deception, Modi said. The Congress has been opposing the farm laws enacted by the government last month. Parliament had passed The Farmers Produce Trade and Commerce (Promotion and Facilitation) Bill, 2020, The Farmers (Empowerment and Protection) Agreement of Price Assurance and Farm Services Bill, 2020 and The Essential Commodities (Amendment) Bill 2020 during the Monsoon Session. The prime minister said his government is undertaking development without any discrimination and with full transparency, and everyone is getting benefit of schemes. Keeping people in villages deprived has been the basis of some people’s politics, Modi said, adding they wanted problems of villages and people there to continue so that their purpose gets served. “People now know those who have looted the

country. That is why they are indulging in opposition, bad-mouthing (government) and using foul language. They are not bothered about the poor, villages or the country. They are troubled by all the good work. They want to stop the development march of the country,” the prime minister said. For over six decades, a huge number of rural poor did not have bank accounts and they were not getting electricity, which his government has done now, Modi said. For decades, crores in villages did not have their own house and now this government has built about two crore houses for poor families in villages and is working to ensure that others get it too, he said. For decades, households in villages could not even think of receiving piped water and the womenfolk had to walk for kilometers to fetch drinking water but the NDA government has under its Jal Jeevan Mission started work to take piped drinking water to 15 crore households, the prime minister said. A massive exercise has also begun to take optical fiber to all villages, he said. Targeting the opposition, he said keeping people in villages deprived had been the basis of its politics as it thought if people were empowered nobody will plead and bend before these parties. “They wanted problems of villages and its people to persist so that their purpose is served. That is why they tried to keep things in limbo,” he said.

NEW DELHI, OCT 11 (PTI): The CBI registered an FIR early Sunday morning and took over investigation into the alleged gangrape and murder of a Dalit woman last month in Hathras district of Uttar Pradesh, officials said. The central probe agency registered the FIR under Indian Penal Code (IPC) sections related to gang rape and murder among others, and the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act. It assigned the case to its Ghaziabad unit with a special team to investigate the ghastly crime, they said. The 19-year old woman was allegedly raped by four men on September 14. She succumbed to severe assault injuries at a Delhi hospital a fortnight later which was followed by a hushed up cremation at night allegedly forced by the district administration. The brutal injuries suffered by the woman and the administration’s move to cremate her body late at night triggered massive outrage among people resulting in a pitched political battle from Delhi to Hathras, a city known for its satire and asafoetida. The political slugfest was further perpetuated after the state police’s statement that it had not found any evidence of rape. Faced with public anger and the opposition’s protests over the Dalit teenager’s alleged rape and murder by upper caste men, the state government had finally decided to hand

Congress expels two leaders over Deoria ‘manhandling’ incident

NEW DELHI/LUCKNOW, OCT 11 (IANS): A day after a woman leader was allegedly manhandled by party workers in Uttar Pradesh’s Deoria, the Congress on Sunday expelled two state leaders Deendayal Yadav and Ajay Kumar Sainthwar for “indiscipline”. State unit President Ajay Kumar Lallu has constituted a three-member team to probe the matter, and submit a report within

three days. The Congress has also alleged that this incident was staged to give the party a bad name. As per reports, a group of men alleged to be Congress workers thrashed a woman party leader in Uttar Pradesh for questioning the candidature of a man, she accused of being a rapist, for the upcoming bypolls. According to sources, the woman identified as Tara Yadav protested over the ticket given to Congress

She said that when she told party’s Secretary Sachin Naik that he has given the ticket to the wrong man and “this will spoil the image of the party in the society. Give it to someone with a good character”, she was beaten up. National Commission for Women (NCW) Chairperson Rekha Sharma said that she will be taking cognizance of the issue.

School Education Advisor appeals

These two batches of SSA and RMSA teachers were recruited through the respective district selection boards and it took the department time to undertake massive exercise to crosscheck records. Meanwhile, the adviser said comments of personnel & administrative reforms (P&AR) and finance departments had been received, adding the school education department was in the process of submitting the issue to the cabinet. Pointing out that the chief secretary too had issued a clarification on October 10, 2020 on the matter and as can be understood from the above, Sukhalu claimed that the department was taking all due action required. He therefore appealed to NSF and ENSF and the teachers concerned not to take the extreme step of agitation, especially at a time when the people were suffering from the effects of pandemic.

BJP district presidents question removal without notice (From p1) Asserting that the party’s image would be damaged if Along continued to be the State president and suggested that he should gracefully resign from his position. T Chongshen Chang alleged that he was removed from the post verbally without any information on August 27 by Along. He explained that as per norms of the party’s constitution, there should be a committee to take disciplinary action and

serve show cause notice, after which the committee decides whether to remove or retain an individual. But he alleged that the State president removed him out of his own free will. As state president, Chang suggested that Along should go through the BJP’s constitution. Meanwhile, a delegation from BJP’s Central headquarters is likely to meet the district party leaders on Monday to resolve the party’s internal crisis.

last month, Yediyurappa had dismissed them as “baseless” and challenged the Congress leader to prove the charges. Citing media reports, Congress spokesperson Abhishek Singhvi on Sunday alleged that the BJP government in Karnataka is “engulfed in the clutches of corruption with dented, tainted leaders ruling the roost”. “If the chief minister has the slightest sense of shame, he must resign or be sacked,” Singhvi said. He also questioned the “silence” of Prime Minis-

ter Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah and BJP president J P Nadda over the reported allegations of corruption and kickbacks against the son, son-in-law, and grandson of Yediyurappa. The matter relates to a Rs 662-crore construction of an apartment project in Bengaluru, Singhvi said and claimed media reports have “disclosed direct involvement of close relatives like son, son-in-law and grandson in corruption and bribery in connection with the project”.

The Karnataka government has said it is in no hurry to reopen schools and will take a call on the issue after evaluating all aspects. “Neither our government nor the Department of Education is rushing to open schools under any circumstances. Mamata Banerjee has said a decision on reopening of schools will be taken only after mid-November. The education ministry released guidelines last week for the reopening of schools, including for thorough cleaning and disinfection of the premises, flexibility in attendance, no assessment for up to three weeks and ensuring a smooth transition from home-based schooling during the coronavirusinduced lockdown to formal schooling. It also asked the states and Union territories to frame their own standard operating procedures (SOPs) for health and safety precautions, based on their local requirements. According to Education Minister Lahkmen Rymbui, the state government has decided that upper primary schools will be reopened only for clearing studies-related doubts of students of classes 6, 7, and 8, as is being done for the secondary and higher secondary school students from October 15. The Puducherry government has announced that students from grade 9 to 12 will have classes from October 8. According to Puducherry’s Director of Education Rudra Goud, classes would be held only for half a day on all six days in a week until further orders. While students of grades 9 and 11 will have classes on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, those in classes 10 and 12 will have them on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays. The attendance would not be compulsory and classes are meant for doubt clarification and guidance only. While the Haryana government is contemplating reopening schools for classes 6 to 9 to enable the students to take guidance from teachers, no final decision has been taken yet. NEW DELHI, OCT 11 (PTI): While the Central government has given a go ahead for graded reopening of schools from October 15, many states including Delhi, Karnataka and Chhattisgarh have deciding against it while others such as Haryana and Meghalaya are still unsure and are assessing the situation in view of the rising number of COVID-19 cases. Universities and schools across the country were ordered shut on March 16 to contain the spread of the novel coronavirus. On March 25, the Centre announced a nationwide lockdown. While several restrictions have been eased gradually in different phases of the ‘unlock’ since June 8, educational institutions continue to remain closed. However, according to the latest unlock guidelines, schools, colleges and other educational institutions outside COVID-19 containment zones can reopen after October 15. The final decision on reopening the institutions has been left with the states and Union territories. Delhi government has decided to maintain the status quo on schools’ closure till October 31 following which a review of the situation will be done. The Uttar Pradesh government has announced that schools outside containment

is leaving us a ‘K-shaped’ recession, where those at the top keep going up, while everyone in the middle and below are seeing things get worse,” Biden said. “It means that while the top 100 billionaires in America have done pretty well, they’re up more than USD 300 billion this year -- you get the bottom half of that K-shape. The downward slide. Because the fact is, President Trump can only see the world from Park Avenue. I see the world from Scranton. From Erie. And that’s who my Build Back Better agenda is for,” he said. The Democratic presidential candidate’s campaign does not allow a large gathering because of COVID-19 restrictions, with at the most a score of people sitting at a distance. On the other hand, Trump’s first public event at the White House was full of enthusiasm and energy with his black and Hispanic supporters chanting “We Love You” and “Four More Years”.

Trump, 74, and First Lady Melania, 50, tested positive for COVID-19 last week. The president was taken to a military hospital for treatment. After spending four days there, he came back to the White House on Monday. His White House address on Saturday to “Peaceful Protest for Law and Order” was described as an official event, but had all the inklings of an election campaign. “We’re starting very, very big with our rallies and with our everything, because we cannot allow our country to become a socialist nation. We cannot let that happen,” Trump said. “Black and Latino Americans are rejecting the radical socialist left, and they’re embracing our projobs, pro-worker, pro-police -- we want law and order; we have to have law and order -- and pro-American agenda.” he said. Trump alleged the agenda of the Democrats was “much beyond socialism” and they had been “shipping jobs to China for half a century”. “Sleepy Joe Biden has betrayed black and Latino Americans. If you think he can run this country, you’re wrong... For half a century shipping your jobs to China. That’s what they’ve been doing. We are bringing the jobs back. We have been charging China a lot of money too, with the tariffs. Billions and billions of dollars,” Trump added.

Korea unveiled weapons including what was suspected to be a new longrange ballistic missile.” A ministry statement demanded North Korea abide by 2018 inter-Korean deals aimed at lowering animosities. South Korea’s Foreign Ministry issued a separate statement urging North Korea to return to talks to produce progress in its past commitment to achieving denuclearization and peace on the Korean Peninsula. After an emergency National Security Council meeting, council members in South Korea said they’ll continue to analyze the strategic significance of the North Korean weapons systems disclosed Saturday and review South Korea’s defense capabilities. Ties between the Koreas remain strained amid the deadlocked nuclear diplomacy between Pyongyang and Washington. During a speech at the military parade, North Korean leader Kim Jong Un warned he would fully mobilize his nuclear force if threatened but avoided direct criticism of Washington.

BAKU (AZERBAIJAN), OCT 11 (AP): Azerbaijan has accused Armenia of attacking large cities overnight in violation of the cease-fire deal brokered by Russia that seeks to end the worst outbreak of hostilities in the separatist NagornoKarabakh region. The Azerbaijani authorities said Sunday that nine civilians have been killed and over 30 wounded after Armenian forces fired missiles overnight on Ganja, Azerbaijan’s secondlargest city, and hit a residential building. According to Azerbaijan’s Prosecutor General’s office, the city of Mingachevir also came under missile attacks early Sunday. Nagorno-Karabakh’s military officials on Sunday denied attacking Ganja and said the territory’s army is observing the cease-fire. They added that Azerbaijani forces shelled Stepanakert, the region’s capital, and other towns during the night in violation of the truce. The recent bout of fighting between Azerbaijani and Armenian forces started September 27 and left hundreds of people dead in the biggest escalation of the decades-old conflict

over Nagorno-Karabakh since a separatist war there ended in 1994. The region lies in Azerbaijan but has been under control of ethnic Armenian forces backed by Armenia. The foreign ministers of Armenia and Azerbaijan signed a truce in Moscow after Russian President Vladimir Putin had brokered it in a series of calls with President Ilham Aliyev of Azerbaijan and Armenia’s Prime Minister Nikol Pashinian. The cease-fire deal was announced in early Saturday, after 10 hours of talks in the Russian capital sponsored by Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, and took ef-

fect at noon Saturday. The deal stipulated that the ceasefire should pave the way for talks on settling the conflict. If the truce had held, it would mark a major diplomatic coup for Russia, which has a security pact with Armenia but also cultivated warm ties with Azerbaijan. However, minutes after the cease-fire took force, both sides accused each other of continuing attacks in violation of the deal. The situation in the region was “relatively calm” on Sunday morning, according to Nagorno-Karabakh leader Arayik Harutyunyan, with only minor hostilities along the frontline.

WASHINGTON, OCT 11 (PTI): US President Donald Trump has alleged that Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden in his previous capacities as Senator and vice president was busy shipping jobs to China, prompting the latter to hit back. Biden said Trump will be the first president in modern American history to “leave office with fewer jobs than when it began”. Making his first public address from Blue Room Balcony of the White House after being discharged from hospital where he was treated for COVID-19 infection, Trump charged Biden and his campaign of taking the country on the path of socialism, which he vowed would not let him do. “The Democrats’ is a socialist program and platform -- and it really is more than socialist. It’s not just socialist; it’s beyond socialism,” he said. As one member from the audience screamed “communist”, Trump said, “Communist. That’s about right.” Biden, who was campaigning in Erie city in the battleground state of Pennsylvania, on the other hand alleged that Trump was only protecting the interests of the rich and billionaires. “The Trump presidency will be the first presidency in modern American history to leave office with fewer jobs than when it began. SEOUL, OCT 11 (AP): South Korea on Sunday urged North Korea to commit to its past disarmament pledges while expressing concerns over the North’s unveiling of a suspected new long-range missile during a military parade. During celebrations marking the 75th birthday of its ruling party in Pyongyang on Saturday, North Korea paraded a variety of weapons systems, including two missiles that were disclosed for the first time to a foreign audience. One is what appeared to be an intercontinental ballistic missile that is larger than any of the North’s known ICBMs, and the other would likely be an upgraded version of a missile that can be fired from submarines. While some experts say they could be mock-ups of missiles under development, their disclosures suggest North Korea has been continuously pushing to boost its weapons capability amid a stalemate in nuclear diplomacy with the United States. South Korea’s Defense Ministry said Sunday it was expressing concerns about the fact that “North

IPL: MI beat DC by 5 wickets; RR beat SRH by 5 wickets

ABU DHABI, OCT 11 (PTI/IANS): Fluent and fiery half centuries by Quinton de Kock and Suryakumar Yadav shaped Mumbai Indians’ five-wicket win over Delhi Capitals in the clash between the two most consistent IPL sides of the season, here on Sunday. Chasing 163, the defending champions overhauled the target with two balls to spare and claimed the top spot in the points table with five wins from seven matches so far. S h i k h a r D h aw a n scored his first half-century of the season and shared a 85-run stand with skipper Shreyas Iyer (42) to help DC post 162 for four. DC’s competitivelooking total proved insufficient in the face of some confident batting by the Mumbai Indians batsmen. Kieron Pollard (11 not out) and Krunal Pandya (12 not out) took MI past the finish line after De Kock and Suryakumar laid the foundation with their knocks and Ishan Kishan (28 off 15 balls) chipped in with a useful cameo. De Kock’s 53 came off 36 balls with three sixes and four shots to the fence,

while Suryakumar took 32 balls for his 53 that was studded with six fours and a six. After losing Suryakumar and Hardik Pandya (0) in quick succession, MI also lost Kishan towards the end but there was no twist in the tale. To their credit, Kagiso Rabada (2/28) and Anrich Nortje dragged it to the

last over with their incisive bowling. DC’s spin all-rounder Axar Patel, who has made an impact since replacing Amit Mishra, got the big fish when he sent back dangerous Rohit Sharma just when he was looking to break the shackles. Rohit was already struggling and it was De Kock, who was doing the

bulk of scoring. The South African was in tremendous touch and in no time raised his fifty with a boundary off Harshal Patel. Suryakumar, who replaced Rohit at the crease, also struck the ball hard and clean from the word go. However, Ravichandran Ashwin applied some breaks by inducing a top-

edge from De Kock, who tried a sweep and was holed out to Prithvi Shaw at deep square leg. Sur yakumar was watching the ball nicely but did not give enough respect to Rabada and paid the price. Similarly, young Kishan should have finished off the game himself but lost his wicket by being over aggressive against Rabada. Earlier, Dhawan’s unbeaten 69-run knock came off 52 balls with six fours and a six, while Iyer’s 33ball 42 had five shots to the fence. Dhawan gave himself enough time to play the sheet anchor’s role even as MI bowlers did a decent job in the slog overs to not let the batsmen play too many big shots. After Shaw (4) was snared early by Trent Boult and Ajinkya Rahane too following him back in the dug out soon, there were no free runs for the Capitals in the beginning after electing to bat. Rahane, playing his first game of the season, was trapped in front of the wicket by Krunal Pandya, introduced timely by MI skipper Rohit, considering

that the India Test vicecaptain struggles against left-arm spinners. With in-form Iyer and Dhawan at the crease, the boundaries came here and there. It kept the scoreboard ticking at a decent run-rate. Iyer’s trademark along the ground-strokes, played with straight bat, were effective and a treat to watch. Dhawan chugged along nicely as the two batsmen formed a substantial partnership. Krunal broke the stand by getting rid of Iyer, who was holed out to Boult at deep mid-wicket. It brought Marcus Stonis (13) to the crease. The Australian hit two cracking boundaries but was run out in a mix up with Dhawan. Rohit smartly used his spinners in the middle overs and and kept Jasprit Bumrah’s quota for the slog overs. Spin duo of Krunal (2/26) and Rahul Chahar conceded only 53 runs in their eight overs.

the bat and received good support from Riyan Parag (42 not out off 26 balls) as they helped Rajasthan Royals (RR) snatch an exciting win against SunRisers Hyderabad (SRH) with one ball to spare here on Sunday. Chasing a modest 159-run target, half of the RR side, including Sanju Samson, was back in the dug-out with just 78 runs on board. However, Tewatia (4 boundaries and 2 sixes) and Parag (2 boundaries and 2 sixes) shared a match-winning 85-run partnership for the sixth wicket to drive their team home in 19.5 overs. SunRisers had scored 158/4 wickets in 20 overs after winning the toss. Defending the total, SRH rode Rashid Khan (2/25) and Khaleel Ahmed’s (2/37) brilliant effort to reduce their opponents to 78/5 with RR’s top guns -- Jos Buttler (16), Ben Stokes (5), Steve Smith (5), Sanju Samson (26) and Robin Uthappa (18) -- back hut. any further onslaughts and slowly helped RR approach the target without any further hiccups. Tewatia’s unbeaten 45 contained four boundaries and two sixes while Parag’s innings was laced with two fours and as many sixes. With eight needed off the final over, Parag slashed a Khaleel delivery over deep point for six to seal RR’s third win of the season. Earlier, opting to bat, SRH was able to post a fighting total in the allotted 20 overs, thanks to Manish Pandey’s scintillating 54 along with valuable contributions from skipper David Warner and Kane Williamson. While the SRH skipper contributed with a 38-ball 48, Williamson remained unbeaten on 22 runs. For RR, Kartik Tyagi, Jaydev Unadkat and Jofra Archer picked a wicket apiece. Brief scores: RR 163/5 in 19.5 overs (Rahul Tewatia 45 not out, Riyan Parag 42 not out; Rashid Khan 2/25) beat SRH 158/4 in 20 overs (Manish Pandey 54, David Warner 48; Jofra Archer 1/25) by 5 wickets.

Nadal ties Federer at 20 Slams Hamilton wins his 91st F1 race by beating Djokovic in Paris to match Schumacher’s record

Rafael Nadal celebrates winning the final match against Serbia’s Novak Djokovic in three sets, 6-0, 6-2, 7-5. (AP/PTI)

Paris, Oct 11 (AP): Rafael Nadal tied Roger Federer with 20 Grand Slam titles by producing a nearly perfect performance against Novak Djokovic in the French Open final. Nadal equalled longtime rival Federer for the most major singles tennis championships won by a man and added to his own record at Roland Garros with No 13 on the red clay, courtesty of a surprisingly dominant 6-0 6-2 7-5 victory over the No 1-ranked Djokovic on Sunday. When Nadal ended it with an ace, he dropped to his knees,

smiled widely and pumped his arms. He did not cede a set in his favorite tournament this year. Nadal, No 2 in the rankings, improved to 100-2 at the French Open, including a combined 26-0 in semifinals and finals, and picked up his fourth consecutive title in Paris. The 34-year-old left-hander from Spain previously put together streaks of four French Open championships from 2005-08, then five in a row from 2010-14, to go alongside his four trophies at the US Open, two at Wimbledon and one at the Australian Open.

Nadal is now even with Federer for the first time since each man had zero Slams to his name in 2003. Federer’s first arrived at Wimbledon that year; Nadal, naturally, earned his first in France in 2005, by which point he trailed 4-0. Djokovic’s loss left him at 17 majors; had he won, the trio’s standings would have read 20-19-18. Nadal is the oldest French Open champion since 1972 and the more than 15 years between his first and most recent Grand Slam titles is the longest such span for a man. This was the 56th installment of Nadal vs Djokovic, the most meetings between any pair of men in the professional era, and their ninth in a Grand Slam final, equalling Nadal vs Federer for the most. Djokovic had won 14 of the last 18 matchups against Nadal, and led 29-26 overall, including a 6-3 6-2 6-3 win at the 2019 Australian Open final.

Lewis Hamilton

Nurburg, Oct 11 (AP): Even Lewis Hamilton once saw Michael Schumacher’s record of 91 wins as unbeatable. Now he’s matched it. Schumacher’s son Mick presented Hamilton with one of his father’s old helmets after the British driver took a record-equaling 91st win at the Eifel Grand Prix. “Seeing his dominance, I don’t think anyone, and especially me, didn’t imagine that I’d be anywhere near Michael in terms of records so it’s an incredible honor and it’s going to take some time to get used to,” Hamilton said, adding that he used to choose Schumacher as his character in a video game. Schumacher has required constant care

since he sustained severe head injuries in an accident while skiing in 2013. Hamilton took a big step closer to matching Schumacher’s record of seven titles too after his teammate Valtteri Bottas failed to finish with an engine problem. Hamilton now leads championship by 69 points with six races to go. Hamilton took the win by nearly five seconds from Red Bull’s Max Verstappen, with third for Daniel Ricciardo in Renault’s first podium finish since 2011. Hamilton started faster than Bottas and had the inside line into the hairpin bend at turn one. He forced Bottas wide over a runoff area, but the Finn held on to take the lead back from Hamilton on the inside of the second corner. Hamilton took the lead back on lap 13 when Bottas braked late and ran wide. The Finn’s race was soon over when he complained of having “no power” and stopped in the pits with what the team said was a problem with his hybrid power unit.

Hassan breaks women’s 10,000m European record

The 27-year-old Dutchwoman clocked 29 minutes, 36.67 seconds.

The Hague, Oct 11 (IANS): Reigning world champion Sifan Hassan shrugged off cold and rainy conditions to break the women’s 10,000-metre European record at the FBK After Summer Competition in Hengelo, the Netherlands, on Saturday. The 27-year-old Dutchwoman clocked 29 minutes, 36.67 seconds to win the 25-lap race, chopping almost 25 seconds off the previous European record of 30:01.09 set by Britain’s Paula Radcliffe in 2002. “I am so happy to have run a new European record, especially a record that has stood for so long by such a strong athlete as Paula,” she said, Xinhua

news agency reported. “It was a very difficult race today as it was so cold and wet. I was feeling really strong today and wished for a bit better conditions, but this record gives me a lot of confidence.” Hassan’s winning mark is also the fourth fastest in history for the distance, falling some 19 seconds short of the world record of 29:17.45 set by Ethiopia’s Almaz Ayana at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio. As the reigning 1,500m and 10,000m world champion, Hassan now holds world records at one mile and one hour, and European records at 1,500m, 3,000m, 5,000m and 10,000m, as well as the half marathon.
