NSDMA predicts heavy rainfall D I M A P U R , M AY 1 2 (NPN): With the onset of monsoon and prevailing weather conditions, Nagaland State Disaster Management Authority (NSDMA) has predicted that heavy rainfall accompanied with lightning was expected in the coming days and that pre-monsoon activity was expected to pick up during this period. A press release issued by the authority said lowland and foothill areas the State such as Dimapur, Nuiland, Chumukedima, Bhandari, Pangti, Tizit and Tuli were likely to experience waterlogging and flash floods because of the heavy precipitation in the hill sector. It was therefore important to take necessary precautionary measures during this time and exercise caution from lightning strikes and gale winds which could cause disruption to communication and connectivity, it added. NSDMA urged the public to be vigilant during this pre-monsoon period and not to take shelter under large trees and near river banks to prevent unnecessary risk to life from lightning and flash floods. It also requested all District Disaster Management Authorities (DDMAs) and other line departments responsible to attend to any emergencies caused by natural calamities to be on alert to save lives and properties during this period.

NDPP more surprised by defection of 21 MLAs Correspondent
KOHIMA, MAY 12 (NPN): After 21 NPF legislators decamped and joined/merged with the ruling NDPP, leaving NPF party with only four legislators, president Dr. Shürhozelie Liezietsu said the action of the 21 was not a surprise for the party but was more of a surprise for the NDPP. After the desertion of the 21 former NPF legislators, Dr.Liezietsu said the NPF has now become a “disease-free party” and that henceforth, with numerical accuracy (remaining MLAs), they will be an asset for the party to be able to move forward step by step. Commending tr ust won by the loyal legislators, he exuded confidence that
Dr. Shürhozelie Liezietsu
the NPF will move ahead and will not criticise nor blame other political parties. Terming the exodus of 21 MLAs to a football game, he said the “defected NPF MLAs have been doing the round blaming the party organisation and the President”. Dr.Liezietsu said explanation given by the 21 MLAs for leaving NPF had no justification as they were
merely blaming the NPF president as a “face saving device” since history proved that defection mark cannot be erased. He said defection was always the result of ambition but will not criticise or blame anybody. However Dr Liezietsu, he’d prefer to live in a Naga thatch house built on rock rather than a mansion built on shifting sand. He lauded the remaining for MLAs for having proved their leadership and congratulated them on their firm stand and commitment to the regional political party. He also congratulated the five elected NPF legislators from Manipur State of which two have been inducted as ministers. (Cont’d on p-8)

Retail inflation hits 8-year high of 7.79pc NEW DELHI, MAY 12 (PTI): Driven by rising food and fuel prices, retail inflation soared to an eight-year high of 7.79 per cent in April this year, which may prompt the Reserve Bank to go in for another interest rate hike in the next month policy review to tame price rise. Worried over the rising inflation, the RBI in a surprise move raised the repo rate by 40 basis points to 4.40 per cent last week. Inflation has remained above the RBI’s comfort zone of 6 per cent for four months in a row mainly due to the Russia-Ukraine war which has impacted the prices of commodities across the globe. The previous high in the consumer price index (CPI)-based retail inflation was recorded at 8.33 per cent in May 2014. CPI inflation was 6.95 per cent in March this year and 4.23 per cent in April 2021. Inflation in the food basket rose to 8.38 per cent
in April from 7.68 per cent in the preceding month and 1.96 per cent in the yearago month, showed the data released by National Statistical Office (NSO) on Thursday. The rate of price rise in ‘fuel and light’ category in the retail inflation basket quickened to 10.80 per cent in April this year from 7.52 per cent in the preceding
month. In the ‘oils and fats’ category, inflation remained at an elevated level of 17.28 per cent (18.79 per cent in March 2022) during the month, as Ukraine is one of the major sunflower oil producers in the world and India imports a major portion of the commodity from the war-ravaged country. Besides, Ukraine is a key supplier of fertiliser to
India. Vegetables witnessed an inflation print of 15.41 per cent during the month as against 11.64 per cent in March, the data showed. Notably, retail inflation has remained above 6 per cent since January 2022. The Reserve Bank of India has been mandated by the government to ensure that inflation remains at 4 per cent with a margin of 2 per cent on either side. After the off-cycle Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) meeting of RBI last week, RBI Governor Shaktikanta Das had said the adverse effects of the unprecedented high global food prices due to the ongoing geopolitical situation are reflecting in the domestic market as well, and going forward inflationary pressures are likely to continue. Meanwhile, according to sources, the central bank is likely to raise inflation projections in the MPC meeting due next month.

Impose PR to save people from unabated corruption: RPP D I M A P U R , M AY 1 2 (NPN): Rising People Party (RPP) submitted its memorandum to the Governor of Nagaland on --- over the issue of inordinate delay in release of salaries to government servants and systemic corruption that has ensured deficit budgets for the last 20 years, the multi-crore fuel adulteration racket busted on April 23,2022; failure to release post matric scholarship to 40,000 students including misappropriation at various levels of the government as highlighted in the CAG report. According to Rising People Party(RPP) president Joel Naga and general
secretary Amai Chingkhu, the party in its memorandum, stated that unabated corruption has resulted in non-payment of salaries to 90% of the entire government workforce and annual regularity in presenting deficit budgets since past 20 years with the current deficit being Rs.2212.74 crore, “ the highest till date”. On the fuel adulteration scam, RPP pointed out that Nagaland’s monthly quota of kerosene(SKO) of around 4.8 lakh litres issued through various PDS for the poor was instead diverted to racketeers. The diverted oil is used for adulterating oil for fuel stations even across
to Manipur and Assam. It said “most shockingly, all files related to SK Oil is handed by the Chief Minster’s Office.” Stating that the unending list of corruption needed not further elucidation, RPP said the “opposition-less” government was against the very idea of parliamentary democracy by default against the constitution of India. It said there are no checks and balances for a robust democracy and instead the existence of “ an autocratic government.” Even money bills involving crores of rupees of public money were moved without
discussion or debate in the assembly. RPP maintained that without opposition in the assembly, the present UDA government in Nagaland has absolute power that has led to absolute corruption that has landed the state in a severe financial crunch. Further, reminding that legislators have time and again promised to step down in order to facilitate Naga solution, RPP said the opposition-less government was still aggressively pursuing Naga political issue through its Core Committee on Naga political issue comprising of NDPP,BJP, NPF and Independent MLA.
It even cited that present veteran NDPP legislator Imkong L.Imchen had even suggested on the floor of the house on March this year, that invoking Article 365 of the Indian constitution “may be the right answer to the cries of the Naga people” . In the light of the above stated facts and in the light of the unanimity among MLAs to step down so as to pave way for Naga solution, RPP said the wisdom of the members of the 13th NLA cannot be discarded and therefore, urged upon the Governor to impose President’s Rule in Nagaland, as the only way forward.
