It said that 58% (631 out of 1079) of confirmed cases this week were traced contacts followed by selftest/random sampling at 36% (393 cases), travellers 24 and frontline workers 22 both at 2% and nine security personnel at 1%. Though Dimapur and Kohima currently have the highest number of active cases-- 1982 and 697 respectively, the weekly sample positivity rate of this two district have drastically come down to 8% (Dimapur) and 12% (Kohima). However, the weekly sample positivity rate in Mokokchung district recorded the highest in the state, as the district registered the most number of positive cases this week--

396 positive cases. Mokokchung district as on June 11 had 549 active cases. Lowest deaths: The Health department informed that the state reported 29 deaths from May 29 to June 11, the lowest fatalities recorded in the last 5 weeks. It however, expressed concern that 44% of deaths in the State had taken place within two days of admission in a hospital. This, the department once again pointed out was due to “very late arrival” at hospitals with critical symptoms.

“does not produce a shield” against the deadly virus, but helps reduce the severity of the infection and chances of death. They have also said that “no causal link has been established” yet between vaccination and the complications suffered thereafter by a person through any clinical or epidemiological studies. H&FW in this regard stressed on the need to get vaccinated against Covid-19. It said that a recent study done by Christian Medical College Vellore, submitted to Mayo Foundation for Medi-
cal Education and research, found very high effectiveness of the vaccine in preventing severe disease among 93.4% of the healthcare workers who had received the Covishield vaccine. H&FW further highlighted the protective effect by Covishield and Covaxin vaccine to-- prevent infection (65%), preventing hospitalization (77%), reducing need for oxygen (92%) and reducing ICU admission (94%).
State logs 96 fresh cases, 3 Covid deaths
Nagaland on Saturday recorded 96 fresh Covid-19 positive cases taking the total case load to 23,562. Of the fresh cases, 38 were from Kohima, Dimapur-26, Mokokchung-20, four each in Tuensang and Zunheboto and two each in Mon and Phek. ‘Save the Saviours’: Countrywide protest Karbi Accord: DPON appeals against assault on doctors on June 18 to Centre and Assam govt NEW DELHI, JUN 12 (PTI): The Indian Medical Association will hold a protest on June 18 against assault on doctors, with the slogan of ‘save the saviours’. In a statement, the apex medical body asked all its state and local branches across the country to observe the protest by wearing black badges, masks, ribbons, shirts and running awareness campaign against violence targeting healthcare professionals. The IMA said press conferences will also be organised and they will also meet local NGOs and voluntary service leaders. It termed “extremely disturbing” a series of violence
against doctors in the last two weeks in Assam, Bihar, West Bengal, Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Karnataka and other places. It demanded the implementation of central hospital and Health Care Professionals Protection Act with IPC and Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC), standardisation and augmentation of security in each hospital, and declaring hospitals as protected zones among others. “Action Committee of IMA, after considering all the aspects and to express our concern, anger and solidarity, has decided to observe the 18th June 2021 as IMA National Protest Day with demand to stop assault on
the profession and the professionals with the slogan ‘save the saviors’,” the medical body said. It further said that June 15 will be observed as a National Demand Day and Press Meets will held across the country by branches. On yoga guru Ramdev’s alleged recent disparaging remarks against allopathy, the IMA said the legal course is underway and it will be followed up. “Ramdev has now publicly issued the new statement saying that ‘DOCTROS ARE DEVDOOTS’ and he will personally also go for vaccination. But the mental agony/verbal violence inflected on us, is unforgettable,” it said.
DIMAPUR, JUN 12 (NPN): Welcoming the proposed move by the government of Assam and government of India to sign peace accord with six militant outfits in Karbi Anglong district, the Dimasa Public Organization, Nagaland (DPON) has, however, appealed to both the central and Assam government to take note of non-Karbi indigenous tribal in the hill district and ensure that their status remained equal in the matter of rights and privileges. In a press release, DPON president K Naben pointed out that Dimasa tribe with a population of about 60,000 live in 151 odd villages in Karbi Anglong district. DPON maintained
that Dimasa tribe had coexisted with Karbis and others from time immemorial, which it said should not be discounted. The organisation also stated that as per medieval history large portion of the district of Karbi Anglong was under the suzerainty of the Dimasa Kachari kingdom. Further, DPON stated that there exists large portion of land traditionally owned by the Dimasa in Karbi Anglong district, which should not be bifurcated. In the light of the above, DPON said Dimasas in Karbi Anglong should be made equal stakeholder in deciding the fate of Karbi Anglong in finding any political solutions.
States, hospitals must audit Covid deaths to ensure clarity: AIIMS chief NEW DELHI, JUN 12 (AGENCIES): A “mis-classification” of Covid-related deaths by hospitals and state governments can be unhelpful in India’s efforts to form strategies to fight the pandemic, one of the country’s top doctors has said. for instance, there seemed to be a mismatch between official figures and the number of last rites performed in April. “Let’s say a person dies of heart attack, and if he had Covid, then Covid may have caused the heart attack. So, you may have mis-classified this as a non-Covid death... as a cardiac problem, rather than directly linking it to Covid,” Dr Guleria told NDTV. “There is a need for all hospitals and states to do a death audit...because we have to know what are the causes of mortality and what
can be done to bring down our death rate. Unless we have clear data, we will not be able to develop a strategy to decrease our mortality,” the veteran doctor said, hinting at preparing for the next wave of Covid-19. Referring to breakthrough infections-- when someone contracts the disease even after receiving either dose of the vaccine, Dr. Guleria said the current data on the phenomenon was limited. “Our concern is that you may get infected but you should not get severe disease. The vaccine should
protect you against that... By and large, the vaccine is holding out by preventing severe disease,” he said. Since most aspects of Covid-19 and the vaccines against it are still relatively new, Dr Guleria said, the matter of duration of the gap between doses, especially for the AstraZenecadeveloped Covishield, was still being studied. Going by the medical community’s present understanding, he said, 12-13 weeks’ time was “good enough”, although this may change as new data emerges.

NHRC directs state chief secy to ensure human rights to villagers NEW DELHI, JUN 12 (AGENCIES): The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has directed the chief secretary of Nagaland to ensure basic human rights of more than one hundred villages of the state, ANI report stated. Acting on separate petitions filed by Supreme Court lawyer and noted human rights activist, Radhakanta Tripathy, the NHRC passed the order recently. Tripathy had alleged that all-weather road connectivity and non-availability of basic amenities like potable drinking water, primary health care and education facilities were not provided and villagers had livelihood problems. He further alleged that the social schemes introduced by the Central and the State governments were not being implemented properly. NHRC has been informed by the chief secretary and DGP that there is no injustice to the Refugees and no Private Tax in the State. The State also reported that the development of the State is in process. Tripathy in his rejoinder reiterated that the rights of the villagers are being violated. The NHRC considered the report of the Home Commissioner to the government of Nagaland and directed him to respond in light of the rejoinder filed
by Tripathy. Responding to the issue of denial of basic human rights of the refugees raised by Tripathy, the Home Commissioner to the Nagaland government stated that the provisions of the Bengal Eastern Regulation (BEFR) Act, 1873 is in force throughout Nagaland. “Anyone coming from outside requires a permit, known as Inner Line Permit (ILP) to enter and stay in Nagaland. A person is given ILP only after being satisfied about his/her identity and antecedents. In case of any report of injustice against him, appropriate action as per law is taken. It is further stated that there are no other refugees except registered Tibetan refugees in Nagaland,” he said. Tripathy, however, alleged that Naga refugees consist of Tibetan refugees and Bangladeshis in Nagaland. Immigration, undocumented in Nagaland unlike in Assam and Tripura, was being perceived as a potential threat to the tribal identity. While underscoring the Sumiya phenomenon, estimates of the total population of illegal immigrants in Nagaland is more than one lakh in number. Replying to another petition of Tripathy related to the collection of illegal tax, the Home Commissioner admitted the fact that there was private tax by some
insurgent groups, the same has been done away with except one group against action has been taken. Tripathy alleged that people of Nagaland have to pay taxes to the parallel governments run by five insurgent groups- NSCN (I-M), GPRN /NSCN, NSCN (K) and the two factions of Naga National Council (NNC) - apart from paying the government taxes. Illegal multiple taxes and threats by insurgent groups mixed with the inaction of the government amount to the denial of the right to life. The Home Commissioner stated that insurgent groups that were active in the State have entered into the ceasefire agreements with the Government of India and are refraining from indulging in armed confrontation with the security forces. Subsequently, Tripathy again pointed out illegal and unabated taxation imposed on the people of Nagaland forcing them to pay multiple taxes to underground groups and continuation of extortion on commercial vehicles un-checked along Highways and check-gates in Nagaland. After NHRC intervention, the chief secretary and DGP Nagaland informed that all possible efforts have been made to curb the illegal activities of insurgents in the state.
Fuel prices touch Core Committee on Naga issue historic highs should be inclusive, says NPP
DIMAPUR, JUN 12 (NPN): State-owned oil marketing companies (OMCs) increasd the prices of petrol and diesel for the second consecutive day on Saturday pushing the prices of the two auto fuels across the country to new historic highs. According to a price notification of state-owned OMCs, petrol price was hiked by 27 paise per litre and diesel by 23 paise. With the latest hike, petrol price in Dimapur rose to Rs.94.82 per litre and diesel price surged to Rs.89.09 per litre. Similarly, in the state capital Kohima, prices of petrol and diesel climbed to Rs.95.77 per litre and Rs.89.85 per litre respectively. The hike on Saturday was the 23rd increase in prices since May 4. In 23 increases, petrol price has risen by Rs 5.72 per litre and diesel by Rs 6.25 a litre. Fuel prices differ from state to state depending on the incidence of local taxes such as VAT and freight charges.
DIMAPUR, JUN 12 (NPN): Drawing attention on the formation of Core Committee on Naga Political Issue comprising of elected members from various political parties, the National People’s Party (NPP) expressed disappointment at “such exclusivity” and demanded to know why other political parties, apex Civil Society Organisations (CSO), irrespective of political affiliations were not included? NPP through its media cell said the above could play a big role for the future of Naga society if they were included in the Committee. NPP asked the “present ruling government “ whether all those who should have been included in the Committee were not Nagas? It reminded the state government to bear in mind the sensitivity of the matter and how the issue affect the people if due consideration was not taken into account. NPP said forming such a Committee for “ the ongo-
ing peace talk” between the government of India and NSCN(I-M) was not a matter that should be taken lightly which was akin to forming a political party only of likeminded whose to hear their views and opinions. NPP said since the cry of the Nagas was that all unite, there should be “no partiality involved” in bringing all together. It pointed out that the Naga struggle is not of one organization alone nor a struggle by the elected members of political parties only. NPP also cited a recent statement of the NSCN (I-M) that the historical reality of the Naga political issue should be reflected with great seriousness. The party said the issue was not about numbers and dates but the soul of Naga freedom that lay in its historical reality. NPP asserted that there can be no solution if the core problem was swept under the carpet for selfish ends through manipulation. (Cont’d on p-5)
Govt issues guidelines for public transport operators NH flays Along’s remarks on Naga issue DIMAPUR, JUN 12 (PN): With public transportation- taxis and autorickshaws- allowed to operate under odd-even basis, the state government has issued fresh guidelines to District Task Forces to streamline the system keeping in mind the safety of both the driver and the passenger(s). All drivers, who come into contact with the public, have been advised to get vaccinated at the earliest, and pending complete vaccination, drivers have been asked to carry Covid-19 negative test results valid for up to 15 days. However, a COVID-19 negative test result won’t be necessary if a driver has a full vaccination certificate. A driver may be exempted from the requirement of carrying a COVID-19 test report if he completely isolates himself by putting a plastic barrier/sheet in the vehicle between the driver
and the passenger. Mingling and overcrowding with other drivers and crowding at the taxi/ auto rickshaw stand(s) should be avoided. Any driver showing Covid-19 like symptoms such as fever, cough, cold, loss of smell/ taste, diarrhoea etc., should immediately self- isolate and get tested. Meanwhile, the deputy commissioners & chairmen of District Task Forces have been advised to immediately take steps for ensuring adherence to the above additional guidelines.
DIMAPUR, JUN 12 (NPN): Denouncing the remarks purportedly made by BJP Nagaland state unit president Temjen Imna Along during an interview with a regional new channel on June 10, 2021, the Naga Hoho (NH) Saturday asserted that Along’s remarks “totally negates the uniqueness of Naga Political history which is unacceptable to the Naga people.” In a press release, NH president HK Zhimomi and general secretary K Elu Ndang said that Along had “literally ignored the existence of Naga nationhood and her political rights and further undermined thousands of precious lives who have
fallen in the hands of occupationist” exhibiting his ignorance about his own identity. According to NH, Imna Along stated that “...any solution that would come should be under the constitution of India and it should be under the Indian union. So anything that is good for the Naga people under the constitution of India should be pursued and should be done with”. The hoho stated that Imna Along has “eroded” the leaders of different Naga political groups both past and present and the Naga intellectuals as if they were all “stoog(Cont’d on p-5) es.” K Y M C

Speakers of NE assemblies to take up racism issue
Shillong/ Itanagar, Jun 12 (PTI): Following the arrest of social media influencer Paras Singh for his alleged racial slur against an MLA of Arunachal Pradesh, Assembly Speakers of the eight Northeastern states have decided to write to Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla on the issue of racism faced by the people of the region outside it. Meghalaya Assembly Speaker Metbah Lyngdoh said on Saturday that they would also petition Prime Minister Narendra Modi to address the menace. “Assembly Speakers of the eight Northeastern states have decided to submit a memorandum to Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla to address issues of racism faced by citizens of Northeastern states living outside the region,” Lyngdoh told PTI. He said that the decision was made at a virtual meeting of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association held on Friday under the chairmanship of Arunachal Pradesh Speaker Pasang Dorjee. There were instances that people hailing from the eight NE states -- Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Sikkim and Tripura faced racial
YouTuber Paras gets bail in racial slur case
File photo of Paras Singh comments in various places in the country outside the region. In one of his YouTube channels dealing with mobile games, Paras Singh had allegedly described senior Arunachal Pradesh Congress MLA Ninong Ering as “a non-Indian” and the state as a part of China. The social influencer was arrested from Punjab’s Ludhiana on May 25 on the charges of inciting ill will and hatred towards the people of the Northeastern state. He was then brought to Arunachal Pradesh and an Itanagar court granted him bail on Saturday. According to police, the YouTuber was enraged after Ering wrote a letter to the PM seeking a ban on PUBG, as banning the online game would have meant a loss in income for him. His channels on the video-sharing website are monetised.
4 children killed in massive landslide in Mizoram Aizawl, Jun 12 (PTI: Four children were killed and two others injured as a massive landslide swept away a building in Aizawl in Mizoram, police said on Saturday. The incident happened around 9.30 pm on Friday at Thuampui neighbourhood in the Bawngkawn police station area in the northeastern part of the city, they said. An Assam-type building, in which a seven-member family lived, was swept away by the retaining wall that collapsed due to a landslip, triggered by rains, police said. Six of the seven family members were present in the house at the time of the incident, they said. Four children, aged between three and 16, died on the spot. The head of the family, Lalbiakzuala (75), escaped from the debris and another member was rescued alive, police said. The bodies were recovered from the debris during the rescue operation launched by police and local volunteers soon after the incident.
A court in Itanagar granted bail to social media influencer Paras Singh who was arrested last month for making a racial comment, targetting an Arunachal Pradesh lawmaker. The Chief Judicial Magistrate (CJM) court here granted bail to Singh on Friday. The court allowed Singh’s plea for bail on the execution of a personal bond of Rs 10,000 and a set of other conditions, including not permitting him to leave the country. The YouTuber was also asked to stay away from interfering into the investigation process. Public prosecutor Rotom Vijay said, “The bail was granted to Singh as the investigation was almost over and all necessary statements were recorded by the state police during his time in judicial custody here.” Singh being granted bail does not mean that the case is closed, he said, adding that the trial would continue after the submission of the charge sheet. He would have to come back to Arunachal Pradesh for the hearings of the case whenever the court summons him, the prosecutor said.

Assam forms 2,000 teams to vaccinate 3 lakh people daily
Guwahati, Jun 12 (PTI): Assam Health Minister Keshab Mahanta on Saturday said that the state government has formed 2,000 teams to vaccinate three lakh people every day provided an adequate number of doses are available. He said the state administration has an adequate stock of Covaxin for administering the second dose to people in the 18-44 years age group. “We have kept ready 2,000 teams who could vaccinate four lakh people every day. But, for now, we are targeting to inoculate three lakh people daily if we get the vaccines. We hope that the availability of vaccines will increase in the coming days,” he told reporters. Mahanta, in a tweet on Friday night, had said that the state has a total stock of 3,80,900 vaccines, including 2,43,460 for those above 45 years of age and 1,37,440 for the 18-44 years age group. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma had earlier said that the state had a capacity to inoculate 1 lakh people every day but it had to vaccinate less than half its capacity on most days since the beginning of the vaccination drive due to a shortage of supply. Mahanta said the Health Department is now focussing more on administering the second dose to
people in the 18-44 years category, while the drive for those above 45 years of age is also underway. “We had issues regarding the second dose of Covaxin due to short supply. We requested every district to let us know about their requirement for the second dose and are supplying them the vaccine accordingly,” he said. The health minister said that the government will be able to administer the second dose of Covaxin to 1.92 lakh people in the 18-44 years category within the stipulated time frame as it has received the required stock from the manufacturer. He said that 6.06 lakh people of the 12-lakh population of Guwahati have already been vaccinated. “We have launched a special vaccination drive in the city from today and hope to cross the seven lakh mark within the next two days. After that, only around three lakh eligible people will be remaining,” he said. After a gap of 13 days, Assam vaccinated more than 50,000 people on Tuesday, with 62,198 people getting the jabs. The number, however, fell again to 41,565 the next day, a National Health Mission bulletin said. On Thursday, the state saw the highest vaccination after 39 days at 93,514 jabs, which came down to 83,054 doses on Friday, it added.

Mnp CM warns stringent action if hospitals neglect Covid patients Correspondent IMPHAL, Jun 12: Manipur chief minister N Biren Singh on Saturday warned stringent action if any of the private hospitals and doctors intentionally neglected COVID-19 patients. “Saving peoples’ lives is the priority,” Singh said and warned that the government would take stringent action against those hospitals or staff if they were found to intentionally neglect in attending their patients and thereby putting their lives into risk. The state government may even cancel the license of the hospital and the doctor concerned, he added. The chief minister conveyed this after he inaugurated the newly set up Covid Intensive Care Unit (ICU) and Accident Trauma Centre at Jawaharlal
Nehru Institute of Medical Sciences (JNIMS). The ICU has a capacity of 100 beds equipped with advanced medical facilities which would be very useful for treatment of COVID-19 positive patients who need intensive care. He said that the newly inaugurated ICU Block would be of great relief to the JNIMS and the people of the state as supply of oxygen to COVID-19 infected patients had been a major concern. Setting up of such ICU beds with ventilators and other sophisticated equipment would be a huge input to the efforts of doctors and nurses in providing treatment and saving the lives of the people from the pandemic, he added. Asserting that every frontline
worker had been rendering their best possible services in many forms such as transportation of oxygen cylinders and implementation of Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), he appealed to the doctors and nurses to put their best efforts to save the lives of people. He also informed that the state government had assigned different teams consisting of three officers each to four major COVID hospitals - RIMS, JNIMS, Shija Hospital & Research Institute and Raj Medicity - to strengthen coordination between the hospital authorities, patients and the government. The chief minister also maintained that the state government had been putting in best efforts to flatten the curve of the pandemic by setting up dedicated COVID
hospitals, Covid care centres and oxygen plants among others at different places. Construction of a 200 bedded dedicated COVID hospital with 50 ICU beds was also in progress at Kyamgei in Imphal East district with the assistance of DRDO and the same would be ready for operation within a month, he added. He further informed that construction works for setting of oxygen plants in certain hill districts was in progress and added that the Central government had also given sanction for setting up of an oxygen plant capable of refilling 200 cylinders in the state. He assured that the state will have adequate supply of oxygen once these plants become operational.
facilities, State Surveillance officer Dr Lobsang Jampa said. Arunachal Pradesh now has 3,274 active COVID-19 cases, he said. As many as 288 patients recovered from the disease on Friday taking the total number of recoveries in the state to 27,438, Jampa said. The COVID-19 recovery rate in the state now is 88.94 per cent while the active percentage stands at 10.61 and the positivity rate at 6.31 per cent, he said.

India’s double trouble
I
ndia’s socio-economy is reeling under the impact of over a year of covid pandemic where, officially 2.94 crore were infected and 3.67 lakh lost their lives. These figures are changing daily as the second wave of the pandemic continues to cause more new infections, deaths and sufferings. In 2020, the number of people thrown out of job, especially the migrant labourers including skilled workers touched a huge figure of 12.2 crore people, according to Centre for Monitoring Indian Economy. The report said 75% of the affected were daily wage labourers. Despite the hugely adverse impact of the pandemic and subsequent lockdown that virtually brought India’s rising economy to a near-grinding halt; the government adopted a dichotomic approach on the terrible situation. While the economy has taken a big hit, crores of people are out of job, prices of various commodities have jumped. This is mainly because industrial activity has been paralysed due to unavailability of raw materials and transport. The other is crippling cost of rising transportation costs due to almost daily rise in price of petrol and diesel. A string of 43 hikes this year as compared to just four cuts has seen prices of petrol and diesel break all records in India this year. Petrol prices have now broken the psychological Rs 100 per litre mark in as many as 135 districts in the country, including all the cities in states like Rajasthan, Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh. Retail prices of petrol have gone up by Rs 10.78 per litre in this year so far, while diesel prices are up by Rs 11.51 per litre. As a result, economic activity suffered, and unsurprisingly, India’s GDP growth reduced by 23.9 percent in the first quarter of FY 2020-21. The fuel price hike has led to cost escalation at both wholesale and retail markets, which are affecting people, whose economy have taken a severe beating. With the entire world struggling to cope with Covid-19 and India being no exception, rising vegetable prices has impacted consumers’ kitchen budget during the ongoing lockdown period. However, prices of almost all items have not come down. Retailers, however, blame the sharp rise in vegetable prices on a steep increase in transportation costs. After the steep rise during COVID pandemic lockdown, vegetables in retail markets of major cities have become costlier by 30-40 per cent during ue to a sharp increase in transportation cost. The transportation charges went up four times higher than the usual rate. Due to this vegetables and other commodities have also become costlier. It is important to note that high petrol and diesel prices was one of the biggest issues the BJP had raised when it came into power in 2014 and promised to bring it down. In the middle of 2008 during the UPA-II rule, the global price of a barrel of crude was $147.02 per barrel. Today it’s around $ 67 a barrel, but users have not benefited. In 2014, the excise duty per litre on diesel was Rs 3.56 and Rs 9.40 on petrol. By March 2021 excise duty per litre on petrol is Rs.32.9 per litre and diesel is Rs.31.8. In May 2012, when petrol prices were hiked by Rs 7.54 a litre, Narendra Modi had called it a failure of UPA government. Today, petrol price in India has gone through the roof and is the costliest in all of South Asia.
DailyDevotion Getting There (2)
They said to Him, “Rabbi…where are You staying?” He said to them, “Come and see.” —John 1:38-39 Where our self-interest sleeps and the real interest is awakened. “They…remained with Him that day….” That is about all some of us ever do. We stay with Him a short time, only to wake up to our own realities of life. Our self-interest rises up and our abiding with Him is past. Yet there is no circumstance of life in which we cannot abide in Jesus. “You are Simon….You shall be called Cephas” (John 1:42). God writes our new name only on those places in our lives where He has erased our pride, self-sufficiency, and self-interest. Some of us have our new name written only in certain spots, like spiritual measles. And in those areas of our lives we look all right. When we are in our best spiritual mood, you would think we were the highest quality saints. But don’t dare look at us when we are not in that mood. A true disciple is one who has his new name written all over him— self-interest, pride, and self-sufficiency have been completely erased. Pride is the sin of making “self” our god. And some of us today do this, not like the Pharisee, but like the tax collector (see Luke 18:9-14). For you to say, “Oh, I’m no saint,” is acceptable by human standards of pride, but it is unconscious blasphemy against God. You defy God to make you a saint, as if to say, “I am too weak and hopeless and outside the reach of the atonement by the Cross of Christ.” Why aren’t you a saint? It is either that you do not want to be a saint, or that you do not believe that God can make you into one. You say it would be all right if God saved you and took you straight to heaven. That is exactly what He will do! And not only do we make our home with Him, but Jesus said of His Father and Himself, “…We will come to him and make Our home with him” (John 14:23). Put no conditions on your life— let Jesus be everything to you, and He will take you home with Him not only for a day, but for eternity.

Post-mortem
Will we need a yearly COVID Booster Vaccine? A s the number of people fully immunized against COVID-19 rises into the hundreds of millions, immunologists and infectious disease experts now are pondering a new question in the unfolding pandemic. Namely, how long will vaccine immunity last, and will people who’ve gotten the jab need booster shots to maintain their protection? It’s an important question, as waning immunity in the face of more powerful COVID-19 variants could cause future infection surges and, in worstcase scenarios, a full-blown return of quarantines and lockdowns, experts say. A person’s immunity always drops to some degree following immunization or natural infection, said Dr. Greg Poland, director of the Vaccine Research Group at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn. But will your immunity against COVID fade quickly, as it does with the flu or the common cold, or will it last longer as it does in diseases like measles or whooping cough? “Antibody levels fall over time. That is true for every single vaccine that we give,” Poland said. “We’ve never immunized against
coronaviruses before, so that question is really openended.” People’s immunity against seasonal coronaviruses -- those that cause the common cold -- fades quickly. That’s why you can catch a cold again and again. But the vaccines developed against the SARSCoV-2 virus, which causes COVID, appear to be creating high levels of antibodies that protect even as they wane. In one recent study of 3,900 health care workers tested weekly for COVID, about 5% tested positive between December and April, Poland said. But of 204 who fell ill, only 16 had been fully vaccinated against COVID-19. “You’re talking about a 0.3% rate” of infection in fully immunized people, Poland said. “And if they were vaccinated, and if they had breakthrough infections, they had viral loads that were 40% to 50% lower and were almost 60% less likely to have any fever. If they were sick enough to be in bed, they spent two fewer days in bed than the unvaccinated.” And that’s the major factor in deciding whether boosters will ever be needed: Are vaccines succeeding at their most important
job?
“The goal of this vaccine is to keep you out of the hospital and out of the ICU and out of the morgue, said Dr. Paul Offit, director of the Vaccine Education Center at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia and an advisor to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. By that measure, experts like Poland and Offit now think it’s unlikely that boosters will be needed any time soon for most or maybe all those who have been vaccinated. Even in the face of newer and more infectious variants like the Delta variant that emerged in India, the existing vaccines have been able to prevent severe illness among the fully vaccinated, Poland said. Offit made a similar point. “It’s much easier to prevent severe critical disease, and I think you’re much more likely to have longer lasting protection against severe critical disease,” he said. “If that’s the goal, then I would imagine that vaccines would last for years.” If this sort of lasting protection proves out, you might still get the sniffles from COVID, but it won’t land you in the emergency room.
“When you get a vaccine and you’re not wearing a mask, the virus still enters your nose and throat. It still begins to reproduce itself. And it still might cause some symptoms before your immune system gets activated,” Offit said. Experts tracking COVID hospitalization rates are keeping in mind two factors as they assess whether boosters are needed -- the health of each person’s immune system and the development of new coronavirus variants. People with compromised immune systems -- smokers, diabetics, the obese, the elderly -- might need booster shots sooner if statistics show them landing in the hospital at increasing rates, Poland said. On the other hand, yo u n g e r p e o p l e w i t h healthy immune systems might have protection that lasts years and years. It’s simply too soon to tell, experts say. “Once you see significant numbers of people who have been fully vaccinated who are developing disease that’s severe enough to cause them to be hospitalized, that would certainly be a signal indicating that boosters are going to be required,” said Dr. Dial Hewlett, medical director of disease control
at the Westchester County Department of Health, in White Plains, N.Y. Dr. Anthony Fauci, the federal government’s leading infectious disease expert, has said protection would not be infinite. “I would imagine we will need, at some time, a booster,” he told a U.S. Senate subcommittee recently. “What we’re figuring out right now is what that interval is going to be.” The main fear now is that a new variant will emerge that is “different enough from the wildtype virus that you are not protected, and yet close enough that your body thinks it’s what it’s already seen and allows you to get infected unchecked,” Poland said. That’s why public health experts are pushing for as many people to get vaccinated as quickly as possible. The United States just passed the halfway point, with more than 50% of people aged 12 and older fully vaccinated against COVID-19, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. President Joe Biden’s goal is for 70% of the nation to have at least one shot by July 4. But the rate of new vaccinations has slowed recently and is
now fewer than 600,000 a day. “The phase we’re in right now is very much a desperate race between vaccine and variant,” Poland said. “If we can get everybody immunized very quickly and don’t allow the Delta variant to gain a stronghold, I think we’ll be home free.” Poland pointed to an encouraging model. “There’s a model out showing that if we can achieve 50% vaccine coverage of the entire population, we will prevent about 6 million additional COVID cases,” he said. “This is really important, because if the virus can’t infect, it can’t replicate. If it can’t replicate, it can’t mutate.” The question of booster shots might become moot if, as some pharmaceutical companies are investigating, the COVID vaccine winds up included in your annual flu shot as a two-for-one, Poland said. “Well, we have to give an annual flu vaccine. What if we wrapped the two together? So, you may not need the coronavirus component, but we’re going to boost the immunity anyway as long as you’re getting the flu vaccine,” he said. For adoption, the centrality of due process
T
he second wave of the Covid-19 pandemic in India has created unprecedented chaos, upended health systems, and claimed an inordinate number of lives. The trajectory of new infections may be ebbing, but it has taken a severe toll on the most vulnerable cohort — children. All children have the right to protection, to survive, to belong, be heard and receive care in a safe and healthy environment. Their parents are their first line of protection. Today, thousands of children have been orphaned with the virus claiming the lives of their parents. Many of them have no family and, therefore, no protection. According to figures given out by the National Commission for Protec-
tion of Child Rights, 3,621 children were orphaned and 274 abandoned between April 1, 2021 to June 5, 2021. Many among them may not have close relatives or their extended families may be unwilling or incapable of taking them in. Almost anyone who has a smartphone has received WhatsApp messages, describing horror stories of young children orphaned by Covid-19, seeking their “adoption”. Such messages, howsoever well-intentioned, are both irresponsible and illegal. These orphaned children are more susceptible than ever and vulnerable to traffickers or criminals, thanks to people trying to help without following due process. There is a lack of knowledge about legal
adoption procedures among the public. Pop culture narratives from popular media vehicles erroneously suggest that one can go into an orphanage and pick up a child. The proper procedure entails that these children enter the legal adoption pool, which is critical not only for their well-being but also for the legal protection of the family unit formed through adoption. If the process is not completed legally, the child could be separated from the adoptive parents, and the parents could even be imprisoned for child trafficking. There is a solid legal route for adoption in India. To help a child get to an adoptive family, concerned citizens can call Childline at 1098, or contact the local police to report a child who has been abandoned
or orphaned. They can also take the child to the nearest Specialised Adoption Agency (SAA), which is a children’s shelter authorised to carry out the adoption process. One can locate the nearest SAA by going to the website of the Central Adoption Resource Authority (CARA). It is a common misperception that child shelters not linked with CARA are a better option for an orphaned child. All children shelters are not authorised to carry out adoptions, but as per the Juvenile Justice Act (2015), they must necessarily facilitate these. Many child shelters do a good job of taking care of their wards but several do not assess them for adoption. A recent study conducted by child welfare NGO, Where Are India’s
Children? , revealed that most shelters keep the children indefinitely, surviving on donations from the public until they are old enough to fend for themselves. While this may be better than being abandoned on the streets, the child does not receive the same care, education, a chance for a stable future, and a sense of belonging that adoptive parents can give. So, it is imperative that children in shelters are assessed for legal adoption within one month of admission. Therefore, the importance of children reaching an SAA cannot be emphasised enough. After a child reaches an SAA, the child welfare committee steps in to enquire if the child has any relatives willing to take care of her before declaring her legally free for adoption.
There are currently more than 30,000 parents willing and waiting to adopt children of any age, siblings, and children with special needs, who have been vetted and found suitable by CARA. Orphaned children must be adopted by these approved families. Let us restore the right to protection for our children who have lost their caregivers to Covid. ost of us may not have come across this term but it has bought issues for people living with it. We might have seen people who are affected due to albinism. Albinism is a rare, noncontagious, genetically inherited difference present at birth. In almost all types of albinism, both parents must carry the gene for it to be passed on, even if they do not have albinism themselves. The condition is found in both sexes regardless of ethnicity and in all countries of the world. It results in a lack of pigmentation (melanin) in the hair, skin and eyes, causing vulnerability to the sun and bright light. As a result, almost all people with albinism are visually impaired and are prone to developing skin cancer. There is no cure for the absence of melanin that is central to albinism. While numbers vary, it is estimated that in North America and Europe 1 in every 17,000 to 20,000 people have some form of albinism. The condition is much more prevalent in sub-Saharan Africa, with estimates of
13th June is International Albinism Awareness Day 1 in 1,400 people being affected in Tanzania and prevalence as high as 1 in 1,000 reported for select populations in Zimbabwe and for other specific ethnic groups in Southern Africa. If we look at India then we shall find around 1 Lakh people with this health challenge and most of the people are not aware on the issue. Globally people face different discrimination and stigma due to same. It is profoundly misunderstood, socially and medically. The physical appearance of persons with albinism is often the object of erroneous beliefs and myths influenced by superstition, which foster their marginalization and social exclusion due to which problem occurs. In some communities, erroneous beliefs and myths, heavily influenced by superstition, put the security and lives of persons with albinism at constant risk. The worst expression of discrimination against persons with albinism is their dehumanization, which lays the foundation for horrifying physical attacks against them.
Because some believe that they are magical beings or ghosts, they mutilate or even kill them, so their body parts can be used for witchcraft rituals. The United Nations Human Rights Council adopted a resolution in 2013 (A/HRC/RES/23/13) calling for the prevention of attacks and discrimination against persons with albinism. The United Nations had declared 13th June is International Albinism Awareness Day which is observed in different parts of the world. “Strength Beyond All Odds” is the theme for this year’s International Albinism Awareness Day. The theme was chosen to highlight the achievements of people with albinism around the world; show that people with albinism can defy all odds; celebrate how people with albinism worldwide meet and exceed expectations in all domains of life and encourage everyone during this time of a global pandemic to join the global effort to build back better. António Guterres, Secretary-General of the
United Nations in his message said that “It reflects the resilience, perseverance and achievements of people with albinism in the face of pervasive misconceptions, discrimination and violence. Despite these obstacles to well-being and security, leaders of organizations representing persons with albinism continue to work hard to support the most vulnerable.” “I am encouraged that persons with albinism are
increasingly taking their rightful place in decisionmaking platforms around the world, leading to meaningful commitments, such as the Plan of Action on Albinism in Africa”, he added . Many of us are not aware on albinism as we don’t see such challenged people often. They too have all the rights and there should not any stigma or discrimination anywhere on earth. There is no doubt
that they have many heath challenges apart from social challenges. Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) cannot be achieved if they do not get their rights and together we can make a sustainable future for all of us where human right of each and everyone is defended. Materialistic society Sir,
The inherited qualities such as Honesty, morality, sharing, Hospitality, kindness, are fading away at pace. We may act “All is well” but the truth reveal itself in a way no one can hide or deny. Unemployment, quality education , gender equality, equality in wealth, corruption, lack of health infrastructure and resources are some of the few visible unheeded problems, which we never intended to seek solutions. The pandemic has reveal the lapsed in our existing society, the realm of materialistic view contrary to spiritual indoctrination, Time has come for us to choose the society we seek. Is it the one that excludes the poor and speak the language of few individuals, or the one that strive to give equal opportunity to voice. The one that solely sees people on the basis of wealth and entitlements or the one that treat equal despite with no dinero or entitlements. Let’s introspect and change things for better, The day might not be far when the details available in job card does exist. SAD, BSP form alliance for 2022 Punjab polls say will rout ‘non-performing’ Congress
CHANDIGARH, JUN 12 (PTI): The Shiromani Akali Dal and the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) formed an alliance on Saturday for the 2022 Punjab Assembly election, with SAD chief Sukhbir Singh Badal heralding the tie-up as a “new day” in the state politics. Announcing the tie-up at a joint press conference with BSP’s general secretary Satish Chandra Mishra, Badal said, “Today is a new day in Punjab’s politics, a historic day...a day of big turn in Punjab’s politics.” He said the SAD and the BSP will jointly fight the 2022 polls and future elections together. The BSP led by former Uttar Pradesh chief minister Mayawati will fight 20 of the 117 Assembly seats in Punjab, while the rest will be contested by the SAD, he said. The BSP will contest seven seats in Malwa, five in Majha and eight in Doaba region of Punjab, said Badal, adding the two parties will

soon form a coordination committee to jointly chalk out various programmes ahead of the polls. The leaders of the two outfits said that the alliance will “sweep” the 2022 polls and oust the “non-performing” Congress from power. The SAD earlier had a tie-up with the BJP and the Badal-led party walked out of the NDA over the farm laws issue last year. The BJP used to contest 23 seats under its alliance with the SAD. About the new alliance, Mishra said, “Today is

a historic day. BSP, which is a national party, has entered into an alliance with Punjab’s strongest party SAD.” The parties are joining hands after a gap of 25 years. The SAD-BSP alliance had contested the 1996 Lok Sabha polls together and won 11 out of 13 seats in Punjab. “This alliance will continue forever now,” Mishra added. “Each BSP worker supports and welcomes this alliance. SAD and BSP are pro-farmers parties, who have worked for upliftment of Dalits, labourers, weaker
sections...,” Mishra said. This alliance will form the next government, Mishra said. Badal said he wants to thank Mayawati for playing “an instrumental role in stitching of this alliance”. “It is a historic day for both parties. The two parties share similar ideologies as both have always fought to upheld the rights of poor, Dalits and weaker sections,” Badal said. The Akali leader said SAD patriarch and former chief minister Parkash Singh Badal had always worked towards ensuring peace and harmony and brotherhood in the state and worked towards upliftment of farmers, Dalits and backward classes. He spelled out several schemes and initiatives which were started for the Scheduled Castes and other weaker sections when the Badal senior remained the chief minister for five terms. He also touched upon the
warm relations which the SAD patriarch and BSP founder late Kanshi Ram shared. Badal lashed out at the ruling Congress, alleging people want to get rid of this regime, which has “looted Punjab”. “Mission of our alliance is to get rid of this non-performing regime. Our alliance will form the next government and once again ensure peace, brotherhood, communal harmony and overall development of Punjab,” he said. Hitting out at Chief Minister Amarinder Singh, he said, “We don’t need to say anything about this chief minister, who has lost trust of his own cabinet colleagues, who are now speaking against him.” Mishra said three “black farm laws is a conspiracy being hatched to snatch land of farmers. We have strongly raised this issue even in the Parliament.”
Etela Rajender resigns, attacks Telangana CM HYDERABAD, JUN 12 (IANS): Former Telangana Health Minister and Huzurabad MLA Etela Rajender tendered his resignation on Saturday and immediately after this he started attacking Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao (KCR). “I thought of tendering my resignation after brainstorming all aspects but I did not get that opportunity. I thought of talking to the Speaker (Pocharam Srinivas Reddy) and then directly submitting the resignation to him but could not do it as the Speaker used Covid as a ruse,” said Rajender addressing the press. Amid this backdrop, Rajender said he submitted the resignation to Assembly secretary after paying respects to Telangana martyrs at the Gun Park pylon. Rajender complained that none of his associates were allowed into the Assembly premises and alleged that this treatment is autocratic as traditions were disregarded.
Farmers to protest at Raj Bhavans on June 26 NEW DELHI, JUN 12 (AGENCIES): Protesting farmer unions will be organising dharnas at Raj Bhavans across the country on June 26 to mark the completion of seven months of their agitation against the three new central agri-marketing laws. “Save Agriculture, Save Democracy’’ will be the main message of the day, and sit-ins will be organised at Raj Bhavans in all states and memoranda will be submitted. Detailed action plan for Mission UP and Uttarakhand will also be taken up soon within SKM,” it said. According to farmer leaders, on June 26, former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi had imposed Emergency in the country. “Even today, the Modi government has also imposed an undeclared emergency in the country,” they submitted. Meanwhile, Samyukt Kisan Morcha, an umbrella body of over 40 farmer
unions, on Saturday formed committees to address complaints and issues raised by women farmers at the protest sites in the backdrop of alleged sexual assault of a woman activist. The committees formed at all the protest sites on Delhi borders will “look into redressal of any complaints”, the farmers’ body said in a statement. Thousands of farmers, mainly from Punjab, Haryana and western Uttar Pradesh, have been camping at Delhi’s borders for more than six months now in protest against the three laws that they say will leave them at the mercy of big corporates and end the MSP regime. The government has said all these concerns are baseless and that the new laws are pro-farmer. The Supreme Court has put on hold the implementation of the laws till further orders and set up a committee to examine the issues.

NEW DELHI, JUN 12 (AGENCIES): Indicating a possible massive undercounting in COVID-19 deaths in Madhya Pradesh, the number of reported deaths in the state during the second wave of the pandemic was over three times more than the average number of deaths reported during these months in pre-Covid times.
been raised about Madhya Pradesh’s Covid deaths data. NDTV earlier reported that in April this year, in Bhopal district alone, figures compiled from crematoriums and cemeteries showed that 3,811 people with Covid had died. However, government data showed only 104 Covid deaths in the district in April. The Madhya Pradesh government did not immediately respond to requests for a comment. On Thursday, Bihar’s massive revision in its Covid deaths figure to over 9,000 became controversial with a 72 per cent jump, raising more questions. Because of Bihar’s update, India reported 6,148 new deaths that day, the highest single-day spike.

during these two months this year, which also marked the peak of the second wave, 2.3 lakh deaths were reported in the state. This marks a 290 per cent increase compared to the average deaths in these months during preCovid times. Most of these 1.74 lakh excess deaths were reported in May (1.3 lakh deaths). However, the government’s data on Covid deaths for April and May show that only 4,100 people died of Covid in Madhya Pradesh in these two months. This is only a fraction of the excess deaths reported during this time, raising the question of whether Madhya Pradesh is possibly undercounting Covid deaths. after a possible romantic escapade with his rumoured girlfriend. Choksi’s lawyers had filed a habeas corpus petition calling his arrest illegal and alleging that he was abducted, tortured and handed over to Dominica authority to deny him rights available to him in Antigua and Barbuda as a citizen. The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and the External Affairs Ministry have sought to implead in the habeas corpus petition by filing two affidavits in the Dominica High Court, officials said here. The central agency will focus on establishing criminal culpability of Choksi, fugitive status, pending warrants against him, Red Notice and charge sheets, while the External Affairs
Ministry will argue that Choksi continues to be an Indian citizen, they said. The affidavits, if admitted, will pave way for noted lawyer Harish Salve to plead Indian case in Dominica, they said. Choksi, promoter of Geetanjali Gems and other famous diamond brands in India, had fled the country weeks before Rs 13,500 crore fraud in Punjab National Bank (PNB) allegedly involving him and his nephew Nirav Modi surfaced. His lawyers alleged that he was kidnapped from Jolly Harbour in Antigua by policemen looking like Antiguan and Indian and brought to Dominica on a boat. Choksi was also brought before a Roseau magistrate, on the orders of High Court Judge Bernie Stephenson, hearing the habeas corpus matter, to answer charges of illegal entry where he pleaded not guilty but was denied bail. His lawyer in London Michael Polak has filed a complaint with Scotland Yard seeking a probe into alleged abduction and torture of his client.

Good governance in a crisis is about confronting the truth, seizing responsibility, and taking action, she said. “Unfortunately, the Modi government did none of these. She hit out at the prime minister, saying that he exported millions of doses of life-saving drugs without ensuring provisions for Indian lives first. “Had the Prime Minister prioritized the people of India above his own PR and image building, we would not have the shortage of vaccines we have today,” Priyanka Gandhi said. “Had he woken up from his slumber and ordered vaccines in the summer of 2020 instead of waiting till January 2021, he could have saved countless lives,” she claimed. Instead of distributing free vaccines across the world to boost his own image, had he paused for a moment and protected his countrymen first, the people would not be standing in line today grappling with a convoluted registration system designed to slow down the vaccine process, she said.

NEW DELHI, JUN 12 (PTI): The Dominica High Court has denied bail to fugitive diamantaire Mehul Choksi in the case of illegal entry into the island country after his mysterious disappearance from neighbouring Antigua and Barbuda where he is staying as a citizen since 2018, local Caribbean media reported. The high court on Friday (local time) gave the ruling by concluding that Choksi was a “flight risk”, did not have any ties with Dominica and the court could not impose any conditions which will stop him from leaving the country, news outlet AntiguaNewsroom said. Choksi had approached the high court after the magistrate had rejected his bail petition. The 62-year old diamantaire, who has an Interpol Red Notice against him, had mysteriously gone missing on May 23 from Antigua and Barbuda where he has been staying since 2018 as a citizen after fleeing from India. NEW DELHI, JUN 12 (PTI): Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi on Saturday launched a scathing attack on Prime Minister Narendra Modi over his handling of the COVID-19 pandemic, alleging that Indians do not come first for the PM, politics does and that truth does not concern him, propaganda does. As part of her “Zimmedaar Kaun (who is responsible)” campaign, in which she has been asking questions of the government over its handling of the pandemic, the Congress general secretary focused on the “crisis of leadership” and claimed that the whole world has witnessed the prime minister’s “incompetence at governance” during the pandemic. “He (the prime minister) simply retreated and waited for the worst to pass. The Prime Minister of India has behaved like a coward. He has let our country down,” Priyanka Gandhi said in her statement posted on her Facebook, Twitter and Instagram accounts. The prime minister’s

Daw Miemie Winn Byrd, a retired US Army lieutenant colonel, Naw May Oo, a tactical adviser to Karen State-based ethnic armed group the Karen National Union, and former Myanmar military captains Nyi Thuta and Lin Htet Aung took part in the discussion. Nyi Thuta blamed the Tatmadaw (military) leadership for dividing the people and

Of the Myanmar military’s some 400,000 troops, only around 20 per cent are committing violence against the people, the former captain claimed. Afghan forces repel Taliban attack, 27 militants dead
Heavy fighting started when hundreds of heavily armed Taliban militants stormed Khan Abad district.
KABUL, JUN 12 (IANS) : Afghan security forces have repelled an overnight attack by Taliban on two districts in Kunduz province, killing at least 27 militants and injuring 15 others, the police confirmed on Saturday. One member of the security forces was also killed in the operation, Xinhua news agency reported. Heavy fighting started when hundreds of heavily armed Taliban militants stormed Khan Abad district, 25 km east of provincial capital Kunduz city and neighbouring Ali Abad
district, 15 km south of the city, the police said in a statement. “The security forces repelled the militants from Ali Abad and efforts are underway to clear Khan Abad from the enemies,” the statement said. Sporadic clashes continued on Saturday morning in Khan Abad as the militants were using civilian properties as shields during the counter-attack, deputy district chief Qudratullah Safi told Xinhua. “The militants tried to take control of Khan Abad
as they advanced to the central areas of the district early Saturday when security forces were responding to the assailants,” he said. Since the official withdrawal of the US and other NATO troops in Afghanistan on May 1, the Taliban have intensified attacks on provincial capitals, districts, bases and checkpoints. Tens of thousands of Afghans have been displaced in the past few weeks. The withdrawal of international troops is due to be completed by September 11 at the latest.

We will be able to achieve victory with minimal losses if military personnel side with the people. So, the channels should be kept open to allow military personnel to join hands with the public,” Thuta said. Calls to shun military personnel and their families have been growing as part of a social punishment movement against the regime, which has killed more than 800 people since February. Nyi Thuta said rankand-file members of the military and their families are subject to oppression by the higher-ups and their families, and the majority do not have the option of walking away from their high-ranking bullies. His fellow former captain Lin Htet Aung said many military
13 hurt in downtown Austin shooting
AUSTIN (US), JUN 12 (AP): A shooting in a busy entertainment district in downtown Austin, Texas injured 13 people early Saturday, and police said the suspected shooter was not in custody. Two of the injured people were in critical condition but as of the news conference at 4 am local time, no one had died, interim Austin Police Chief Joseph Chacon said. Gunfire erupted just before 1:30 am along 6th Street, a popular area filled with bars and restaurants. The street was barricaded to keep out vehicle traffic at the time of the shooting, Chacon said. It was unclear what sparked the shooting. Eleven of the injured people were taken to one local hospital, another person was taken to a different hospital, and the other person went to an urgent care facility with gunshot wounds, Chacon said. “Our officers responded very quickly,” the interim chief said. “They were able to immediately begin lifesaving measures for many of these patients, including applications of tourniquets; applications of chest seals.” Chacon also said some officers transported patients to hospitals in their police cruisers due to the nature of the scene, where it was hard to contain the crowd and get ambulances to those who were injured.

NEW YORK, JUN 12 (IANS): Indian-origin journalist Megha Rajagopalan has won the US’ top journalism award, the Pulitzer Prize, for innovative investigative reports harnessing satellite technology that exposed China’s mass detention camps for Muslim Uighurs and other minority ethnicities. The award in the international reporting category that she shared with two colleagues from an internet media, BuzzFeed News, was announced on Friday by the Pulitzer Board. Another journalist of Indian-origin, Neil Bedi, won a Pulitzer in the local reporting category for investigative stories he wrote with an editor at the Tampa Bay Times exposing the misuse of authority by a law enforcement official in Florida to track children. Prizes awarded by a board at Columbia University’s Graduate School of Journalism in New York recognising the outstanding work. In recognition of the proliferation of citizen journalism in the internet age, teenaged non-journalist, Darnella Frazier, was awarded a Pulitzer Special Citation for her courage in filming the killing of George Floyd, the African-American who died in police custody in Minneapolis last year. The video clip made on her smartphone went
viral and set off prolonged nationwide protests against police brutality and led to measures in many states and cities to reform policing. The sight of a policeman kneeling on the neck of dying Floyd as he repeated, “I can’t breathe”, appealed to America’s conscience and led to a broader consideration of the problems faced by African-Americans. The Board said her that her video “spurred protests against police brutality around the world, highlighting the crucial role of citizens in journalists’ quest for truth and justice”. Rajagopalan and her colleagues used satellite imagery and 3D architectural simulations to buttress her interviews with two dozen former prisoners from the detention camps where as many as a million Muslims from Uighur and other minority ethnicities were interned.

FA L M O U T H ( E N G LAND), JUN 12 (AP): British Prime Minister Boris Johnson has held meetings with German Chancellor Angela Merkel and French President Emmanuel Macron on the sidelines of a G-7 summit, as post-Brexit turbulence strains relations between Britain and the EU. Johnson also met the bloc’s leaders, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and European Council President Charles Michel, on Saturday at the Carbis Bay resort where G-7 leaders are gathering. The two sides are locked in an escalating diplomatic feud over Northern Ireland, the only part of the UK that has a land border with the bloc. The EU is angry at British delay in implementing new checks on some goods coming into Northern Ireland from the rest of the UK, while Britain says the checks are imposing a big burden on businesses and destabilizing Northern Ireland’s hard-won peace. The spat has drawn in US President Joe Biden, concerned about the potential threat to Northern Ireland’s peace accord.

The CDM was made possible by the support of the people, and many more military personnel are expected to leave their barracks if people continue to support those wishing to join, he said. Miemie Winn Byrd, who served in the US Army for 28 years, said the sole duty of the armed forces is to protect the people. “Their duty is to protect the people. They should train to fight wars and defend their country, but not do business and politics. If they do, things will end up in chaos,” Miemie Winn Byrd, who is of Burmese origin, said.

Denmark players form ring as Christian Eriksen receives medical attention after collapse during the Euro 2020 match against Finland.
Copenhagen, Jun 12 (AGENCIES): Denmark midfielder Christian Eriksen collapsed while playing and was given CPR by medics during his side’s Euro 2020 soccer match with Finland on Saturday, and was later conscious in hospital. The game was initially suspended and later postponed. Eriksen collapsed suddenly in the 42nd minute of the match while running near the left touchline after a Denmark throw-in. Teammates Martin Braithwaite and Thomas Dela-
ney rushed to assist him, with Delaney beckoning furiously for medical assistance. As a hush fell over the 16,000-strong crowd, Eriksen’s teammates formed a ring around him as medics pumped his chest just before halftime in their Group B clash. A Reuters photographer at the game saw Eriksen raise his hand as he was carried from the pitch on a stretcher, and the stadium announcer later told the crowd that he had been taken to the nearby Rigshospitalet.
The Danish DBU football association tweeted that the 29-year-old was “awake and at Rigshospitalet for further examinations”. The news that Eriksen had been taken to hospital was greeted by the crowd chanting his name. Both teams subsequently left the field with officials holding up sheets to hide the stricken player from view, and the stadium announcer told fans that the game had been suspended due to a medical emergency and to stay in their seats.

Amosov dethrones Lima to capture welterweight title
Yaroslav Amosov and Douglas Lima
UN C A S V I L L E , J UN 12 (AGENCIES): Undefeated Yaroslav Amosov became the first Ukrainian to capture a major MMA world title as he dethroned three-time Bellator welterweight champion Douglas Lima in the main event of Bellator 260. On Friday night in Uncasville, Connecticut, Amosov, 27, used his superior wrestling to nullify Lima’s knockout power as he took down the champion in each of the five rounds and dominated the Brazilian en
route to a landslide win on the scorecards at the Mohegan Sun Arena. Lima, 33, came into the fight with a well-earned reputation as a dangerous knockout artist, but he barely connected with a clean shot throughout the five-round championship bout as Amosov waited patiently out of range, then closed the distance, forced the action up against the fence, and wrestled the champion to the mat. It was a tactic that worked time after time, as
Amosov managed to take the champion to the mat in each of the five rounds to secure scores of 50-45, 49-46 and 49-46 from the three cage-side judges as he captured the 170-pound title. Amosov’s victory extended his perfect professional record to 26-0 to leave him just three wins behind the mark set by Russia’s former UFC lightweight champion KhabibNurmagomedov, who retired undefeated at 29-0 last year.
After the final bell sounded, an emotional Amosov wept with joy in the middle of the cage before the official verdict was announced. “I’m happy, because it’s my life. I’ve been training a long time, and this is the result. I’m happy,” he said, before sharing the news that he is set to become a father to a son next month. Amosov’s first title defence is likely to be against England’s Michael Page, who is currently the next highest contender in the Bellator welterweight rankings. The Londoner, who was working on the broadcast desk for the event, said he wasn’t surprised by what he saw from the Ukrainian, but admitted he was taken aback by Lima’s performance. “I didn’t really learn anything that I didn’t expect in terms of his takedown ability,” Page explained. “But I was just very shocked at Douglas Lima in terms of the lack of urgency to stand back up, the lack of urgency to land your formidable kicks, to putting combinations together.
Paris, Jun 12 (IANS): Unseeded Barbora Krejcikova on Saturday became the first Czech Republic woman in 40 years to win the French Open title as she defeated No.31 seed Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova of Russia 6-1, 2-6, 6-4 in the final match. Barbora, the world No. 33, needed one hour and 58 minutes to beat 29year-old Anastasia, who too was in her maiden Grand Slam final. Hana Mandlikova was the last Czech Republic player to win the French Open title, in 1981. The 25-year-old Barbora, who has won two Grand Slam women’s doubles and three mixed doubles titles and was ranked

the No.1 doubles player in 2018, had an easy first set. She dropped serve in the opening game of the contest before racing to take the next six games and claim a one-set lead inside 30 minutes. Anastasia jumped into contention, opening up a 5-1 lead in the second set before closing it at 6-2. But after two contrasting sets, Barbora found the perfect rhythm in the decider at 3-3. It helped that Anastasia was struggling
with a leg injury, which necessitated a medical timeout in the second set. Barbora could make a clean sweep of the titles here, as she is also in the women’s doubles final. On Sunday, Barbora could become the first woman since Mary Pierce of France in 2000 to clinch both the singles and doubles French Open titles as she and compatriot Katerina Siniakova are set to play Poland’s Iga and American BethanieMattek-Sands for
the title. Though Barbora has been dominating the doubles circuit for long, her singles surge been phenomenal this year. She broke into the top 100 in singles in September last year and this was just her fifth major main draw after 15 qualifying losses between 2014 and 2019. Remarkably, Barbora, who is now on a 12-match winning streak, had won her maiden WTA singles title two weeks ago in Strasbourg.
