Ready to implement 33 pc reservation for women in civic bodies: Nagaland Govt
NEW DELHI, APR 12 (PTI): The Nagaland government on Tuesday told the Supreme Court it has agreed to implement 33 per cent reservation for women in civic bodies. The state government told a bench of Justices S K Kaul and M Sundresh that a resolution has been adopted in this regard at a consultative meeting held on March 9 where all the stakeholders were present. “A resolution was passed affirmed by the chief minister and the others that we should go ahead with the 74th amendment giving reservation of 33 per cent to women,” the state counsel told the bench. The top court said
SC asks State govt to apprise schedule of elections on next date of hearing in July that with this there is no impediment in holding of elections providing reservation for women. “We have also pursued the affidavit of compliance in which it is stated that on March 16, 2022 a meeting was held in regard to elections for urban local bodies after taking into account the direction of
this court the state election commission was intimated to use state assembly electoral rolls as the basis for municipal elections and intensively update the same on account of large gap since the last elections. “The state election commission submits that they have already initiated a process of summary revi-

sion which will take place in two months,” the bench said while directing that it to apprise about the schedule of elections on next date of hearing in July. The apex court had earlier rapped the Nagaland government over the delay to enforce reservation for women in the state’s urban local bodies, saying an important aspect of gender equality seems to be getting postponed. It had taken note of the grievance made by the state election commission that the State Government is not responding to its request regarding changes in legislation to adopt the electoral rolls of Parliament in the assembly elec-
tion for use in local body elections. The State Election Commission had told the apex court that no response had been received in pursuance to the office letter to provide requisite additional fields in existing rolls to enable ward-wise segregation of voters. The top court was hearing a plea filed by People’s Union for Civil Liberties (PUCL) and others seeking to hold the elections for all municipalities and town councils in Nagaland forthwith in accordance with Section 23A of the Nagaland Municipal (First Amendment) Act, 2006 and the notification of the state government.

maintain uniformity and smooth practical implementation. They insisted that NIDA’s demand was unique as it was not the association raising the issue but based on Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s announcement. They claimed the announcement was specific for government doctors only to meet the acute shortage of doctors. Therefore, they asserted that other service associations could not claim similar increase in superannuation age merely citing precedence. They also claimed in more than 25 States where it had been implemented, no such claim had been made by other services. On behalf of NIDA, they also expressed grati-
tude to Eastern Naga Students’ Federation (ENSF) for supporting their genuine demand during the consultative meet of stakeholders at the chief secretary’s conference hall, Kohima on March 1. Mentioning that Naga Students’ Federation did not object to increase in the superannuation age of doctors in Arunachal Pradesh, Assam and Manipur where it had a strong presence, the NIDA leaders wondered why Naga doctors of Nagaland could not get the benefits of the Naga doctors in Arunachal Pradesh, Assam and Manipur. They asked whether belonging to Nagaland was a disqualification to claim increase in superannuation age. (Cont’d on p-8)

Nagaland’s rank improves in SDG Index DIMAPUR, APR 12 (NPN): With its score in Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) Index improving from 57 in 2019 to 61 in 2021, Nagaland is now ranked 19th among the 28 States and eight Union Territories. Kohima on Tuesday claimed that Nagaland was making consistent progress in SDG Index, which focused on State-level performance. Going by the NER District SDG Index, he noted that some districts of Nagaland were doing fairly well in certain goals like zero hunger, clean water and sanitation, quality education and gender equality. However, he acknowledged that more works were needed to be done for bottom-ranked districts and on some indicators at the State level. Imnatiba also claimed that the Nagaland SDG Vision 2030 launched by
chief minister Neiphiu Rio in August last year provided specific targets with measurable indicators and strategies to meet the aspirations of the people. With technical support of UNDP and active collaboration from various State departments, he said the SDG Coordination Centre (SDGCC) of Planning Department was already making rapid strides towards achieving the goals.
