NEW DELHI, APR 12 (PTI): The Nagaland government on Tuesday told the Supreme Court it has agreed to implement 33 per cent reservation for women in civic bodies. The state government told a bench of Justices S K Kaul and M Sundresh that a resolution has been adopted in this regard at a consultative meeting held on March 9 where all the stakeholders were present. “A resolution was passed affirmed by the chief minister and the others that we should go ahead with the 74th amendment giving reservation of 33 per cent to women,” the state counsel told the bench. The top court said

SC asks State govt to apprise schedule of elections on next date of hearing in July that with this there is no impediment in holding of elections providing reservation for women. “We have also pursued the affidavit of compliance in which it is stated that on March 16, 2022 a meeting was held in regard to elections for urban local bodies after taking into account the direction of

sion which will take place in two months,” the bench said while directing that it to apprise about the schedule of elections on next date of hearing in July. The apex court had earlier rapped the Nagaland government over the delay to enforce reservation for women in the state’s urban local bodies, saying an important aspect of gender equality seems to be getting postponed. It had taken note of the grievance made by the state election commission that the State Government is not responding to its request regarding changes in legislation to adopt the electoral rolls of Parliament in the assembly elec-

tion for use in local body elections. The State Election Commission had told the apex court that no response had been received in pursuance to the office letter to provide requisite additional fields in existing rolls to enable ward-wise segregation of voters. The top court was hearing a plea filed by People’s Union for Civil Liberties (PUCL) and others seeking to hold the elections for all municipalities and town councils in Nagaland forthwith in accordance with Section 23A of the Nagaland Municipal (First Amendment) Act, 2006 and the notification of the state government.

They insisted that NIDA’s demand was unique as it was not the association raising the issue but based on Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s announcement. They claimed the announcement was specific for government doctors only to meet the acute shortage of doctors. Therefore, they asserted that other service associations could not claim similar increase in superannuation age merely citing precedence. They also claimed in more than 25 States where it had been implemented, no such claim had been made by other services. On behalf of NIDA, they also expressed grati-

tude to Eastern Naga Students’ Federation (ENSF) for supporting their genuine demand during the consultative meet of stakeholders at the chief secretary’s conference hall, Kohima on March 1. Mentioning that Naga Students’ Federation did not object to increase in the superannuation age of doctors in Arunachal Pradesh, Assam and Manipur where it had a strong presence, the NIDA leaders wondered why Naga doctors of Nagaland could not get the benefits of the Naga doctors in Arunachal Pradesh, Assam and Manipur. They asked whether belonging to Nagaland was a disqualification to claim increase in superannuation age. (Cont’d on p-8)

DIMAPUR: A 40-day revival, that was unplanned and without budget support was held under Sinai Ministry at the inspiration from the Holy Spirit. The revival was participated by thousands of worshippers who believed in God’s message of unity of the body of Christ in Nagaland. There was mighty outpouring of revival spirit and came against the backdrop of the 150th year of

Christianity in Nagaland. The first 11 services starting from March 11 were held at The Lighthouse Church, where speakers from different denominations and background descended and preached. It was carried on and hosted at the Catholic Church of Holy Cross Higher Secondary School. The revival continued at Nagaland Christian Revival Church (Sumi),

We need to come together as a body of Christ, churches, so that growth may take place,” entreated Pastor Kenei Kiso of Life Square Church. “We need to be sensitive to the timely word that God releases upon our lives, upon our family, upon our land, upon our nation,” urged Tali Angh, The Lighthouse Church. “Your life, family, church, the government, business, career…; anything that is not founded in Christ will be shaken,” Pastor Wabang Longchari further cautioned. “Jesus is calling us to a deep lifestyle of following; of humility and of constantly dying to our

selfishness, selfish desires, to our ego, to our pride,” asserted Pastor Visasier Kevichusa, Kingdom Culture Church. Sensing the urgency for repentance, reconciliation and unity among the Nagas and in the body of Christ, the organisers of the revival meeting decided to make a clarion call on all believers in Nagaland from whichever denomination or background to “come together in unity and pray for the healing of the land”. Thus, a ‘Heal Nagaland’ will be held from April 1519 at the football ground of Don Bosco Higher Secondary School, Dimapur. Dignitaries from different offices and backgrounds, well-known artistes and influencers are stated to be part of the event, which will also be streamed live on the Facebook page and YouTube channel of Sinai Ministry, as well as from channels and pages of other accounts.

Waterways to help build business with neighbouring countries: Sonowal

Assam: Oil India Limited under major ‘cyberattack’ TINSUKIA, APR 12 (AGENCIES): The Oil India Limited has come under a “major” cyberattack, compelling the oil giant to shut down its entire IT set-up across the country to contain the attack, reports East Mojo. The attack came less than a week after reports emerged that hackers targeted the Power Grid facility near Ladakh for the past few months, including March this year. The reported “cyber attacks” near Ladakh were carried out by China-based hackers if reports are to be believed. Confirming the development, OIL spokesperson Tridiv Hazarika said, “Based on the advice of the IT division, all computers have been immediately withdrawn from LAN connectivity, and internet connectivity has been disabled since yesterday. On April 11, we witnessed some malfunction in some computers located at OIL headquarters in Dibrugarh.” “The online IT team identified it as a major cyberattack, detecting malware in the affected computers,” Hazarika said. He said an advisory was issued immediately to disable connectivity of all computers to stop the spread of the attack and save the server from further damage.

Union Minister of Development for North Eastern Region G Kishan Reddy, in his virtual address, said waterways would be significantly helpful in realising the potential of abundant natural resources in the region. Railways Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said an attempt must be made to achieve as high a share of the waterways sector as possible in the logistics mix, comprising rail,

road, and waterways in the country. Bangladesh State Minister of Shipping Khalid Mahmud Chowdhury said there are 700 rivers in his country, and out of which 54 are along the boundary between the two countries. Chowdhury, in his virtual address, said around 8,480 kilometres of navigable waterway of the neighbouring country could be utilised for transportation and distribution of goods between Bangladesh, India, Nepal and Bhutan. Bhutan’s Minister of Economic Affairs, Lyonpo Loknath Sharma, said the trade between India and the neighbouring country was increasing and invited stakeholders to work to-

AGARTALA, APR 12 (PTI): Tripura Tourism Minister Pranajit Singha Roy Tuesday said that a MoU will be inked between the state tourism department and Bangladesh tour operators to introduce conducted tours to the neighouring country during the second edition of Indo-Bangla Paryatan Utsav here. The three-day tourism event will begin on April 17 and a 75-member strong contingent from Bangladesh will be present, official said. The Bangladesh team will include MP Abidul Mukhtar Chowdhury, tour operators, hotel owners, cultural activists, intellectuals and political personalities, they said. Besides, tour operators from West Bengal and Assam will also take part in the Indo-Bangla Paryatan Utsav which will be inaugurated by Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb. During 2018-19 around 1.2 lakh foreign tourists visited the state’s tourist hotspots and 80 per cent of the foreign tourists came from Bangladesh. Tourists from the state on the other hand are keen to visit Chittagong due to nostalgia of a shared past, the minister said.

Over 40 per cent in Meghalaya and Nagaland do not have Aadhaar cards

C H E N NA I , A P R 1 2 (AGENCIES): In Meghalaya and Nagaland, over 40 per cent of the population do not have Aadhaar cards, according to latest Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) data. Aadhaar penetration in these States is just 58.61 per cent and 59.29 per cent. The saturation isn’t that great in Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur and Ladakh either, where only 79.29 per cent, 79.95 per cent and 77.79 per cent of the population have Aadhaar cards. On the contrary, four States and two union territories, including Delhi have a 100 per cent saturation. While Meghalaya’s position in this regard is the worst in the country, saturation is improving gradually. For instance, only 3.6 per cent of the State’s eligible population had an Aadhaar in 2016. The big jump happened between 2020 and 2021, when saturation percentage went up from 30.3 to 48.3. Sources close to the Meghalaya government told The Hindu that the government has initiatives underway and is aiming to get at least 70 per cent of the population registered by 2023.

Nagaland, however, had 55 per cent saturation in 2017, which has moved up approximately 4 per cent since then. The saturation continued to be 57.2 per cent for two years, from 2018 to 2020, according to UIDAI. Multiple factors have affected Meghalaya’s Aadhaar saturation. Until recently, a lot of government schemes did not mandate the people of Assam and Meghalaya to have an Aadhaar. In 2017, when the Aadhaar saturation in the State was just 14 per cent, then Chief Minister Mukul Sangma, said that he had not applied for an Aadhaar card. It is unclear if Sangma has got a card now. However, George Lyngdoh, an AITC MLA from the State whom we spoke to said that he got his card only in 2020. At the same time, Lyn-

gdoh believes that numbers may improve soon. “When Aadhaar will be linked to subsidies, people will feel the requirement. When the need arises, people will pick it up. This also says that not a lot of people are availing central government subsidies and facilities,” he adds. In 2017, there was a huge opt-out campaign in the State, where people wrote to the UIDAI authorities, expressing their unwillingness to get an Aadhaar card, based on religious grounds. In Nagaland, there have been anti-Aadhaar campaigns about how it contradicts special provisions granted to the State under Article 371A of the Constitution. It exempts the State from the applicability of the Acts of Parliament in respect of the religious or social practices of the Nagas and their customary law and procedure.

MPYC president Adrian Chyne Mylliem said that they have come out to protest against the decision taken by the government. “We can see many people in the disputed areas have cried that whatever has happened is foul play and no consultation was carried out with the village heads or community to give away those areas …it is out right and it is necessary that we take a stand against this decision,” said Mylliem.

Lilabari will be amongst nine FTOs to be established in five airports in India by June 2022 which includes Belagavi and Kalaburagi in Karnataka, Jalgaon in Maharashtra and Khajuraho in Madhya Pradesh. With the establishment of these FTOs, India will aim to become a global hub for pilot training. Speaking on the occasion, Scindia said, “I consider myself blessed to be in Assam which is renowned internationally for its history and culture. Assam is becoming the growth engine of North East.” Scindia recalled that Lilabari airport was inaugurated by former Prime Minister late Atal Bihari Vajpayee in 2003-2004, and today the airport is being given due importance by opening the first FTO in Northeast.

that there were consultations with BJP Central leaders for expansion of his ministry. The chief minister visited the state Assembly to congratulate them. The chief minister who hoped to get the nod soon said,”Once we get the nod from the Central leaders, the ministry expansion will take place.” To another query, the chief minister hinted that the remaining six ministers are likely to be appointed from the BJP MLAs. However, induction of more ministers from the NPF, the only internal alliance of the BJP-led government will dependend on the the Central leaders of the party, Singh added. K’ata contractor’s death: suicide note blames Min CONG HURLS ‘40 PER CENT SARKAR’ BARB, GOVT PROMISES TRANSPARENT PROBE

BENGALURU, APR 12 (PTI): The death of a contractor who levelled corruption charges against a Karnataka Minister erupted into a major political row on Tuesday with the opposition Congress calling for the resignation or dismissal of the Minister concerned while the party’s top leader Rahul Gandhi launched a scathing attack on Prime Minister Narendra Modi and state Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai over the matter. While Bommai said the police will conduct a thorough and transparent investigation, a defiant K S Eshwarappa, who is facing the heat over the death of Santosh Patil, refused to resign from the cabinet, insisting he was not at fault and that he had even filed a defamation suit against the deceased after he had alleged the Rural Development and Panchayat Raj Minister (RDPR) had demanded 40 per cent commission for some works. Earlier, Patil’s body was found in a room of a

K S Eshwarappa and Santosh Patil

private lodge in the coastal town of Udupi. In his purported message on social media before the death, Patil, who hails from Belagavi district, allegedly held the Minister responsible for his death. “He was found dead. It is not a case of hanging. The room has been sealed. Next step will be taken after the arrival of forensic team from Mangaluru,” Udupi superintendent of police N Vishnuvardhana told reporters. Patil’s wife Jayashri told reporters in Belagavi: “My husband is not the one who can commit suicide.

It is a murder. A man who always advised people not to commit suicide cannot take such a drastic step. What does it mean that a man who happily spoke to me last evening is no more,” she asked. On March 30, Patil, who had claimed himself to be a BJP worker, alleged he had executed a work in the RDPR department and wanted the payment but that Eshwarappa demanded 40 per cent commission in the Rs four crore work, prompting a the rival Congress to dub the ruling BJP as “40 per cent sarkar.” The Minister had not

only rubbished his charge then, but also filed a defamation suit against him. On Tuesday, Eshwarappa ruled out his resignation, as demanded by the opposition. “There is no question of resigning. We have to wait for the verdict of the court in the case I had filed against Santosh Patil. I make it very clear that I am not at fault anywhere,” Eshwarappa said and reiterated that he did not know Patil. According to him, based on Patil’s allegation, the Union Ministry for Rural Development had written to the RDPR in Karnataka and accordingly, an answer was given. “It is very clear that I am not wrong. After I filed the defamation suit, a notice was sent to him. Now I have learnt through you that he has committed suicide. Other than that, I don’t know anything else,” Eshwarappa said. Launching a scathing attack, Rahul Gandhi accused the prime minister and the Karnataka chief

minister of being complicit in the contractor’s death, saying that the victim’s pleas to them went unanswered. “ B J P ’s 4 0 % C o m mission Government in Kar nataka has claimed t h e l i f e o f t h e i r ow n Karyakarta(worker). The victim’s pleas to the PM went unanswered. The PM and CM are complicit. #BJPCorruptionFiles (sic),” Gandhi said on Twitter. State Congress leader Siddaramaiah said, “Santosh K Patil, a BJP worker himself, has clearly said that Eshwarappa is directly responsible for his death. This comes under the ingredients (of offence) under Section 300 of the IPC warranting punishment under Section 302 (murder) of the IPC.” “Eshwarappa should be arrested immediately and he should be dismissed from the cabinet forthwith. Chief minister Basavaraj Bommai should not allow him to continue as minister in his cabinet since he is facing murder charge.”

Oppn slams Kejriwal for meeting INS Vikrant case: BJP leader moves Bombay High Court IAS officers without Mann

secretary (power) in Delhi, but not Mann. Former Punjab Congress chief Navjot Singh Sidhu tweeted: “Punjab’s IAS officers summoned by @ArvindKejriwal in CM @BhagwantMann’s absence. This exposes the Defacto CM & Delhi remote control. Clear breach of federalism, insult to Punjabi pride. Both must clarify.” Former chief minister Amarinder Singh said “Kejriwal had taken over Pun-

jab much before expected”. Singh tweeted: “Worst was feared, worst happened. @ArvindKejriwal has taken over Punjab much before it was expected to happen. That @ BhagwantMann is a rubber stamp was a foregone conclusion already, now Kejriwal has proved it right by chairing Punjab officers’ meetings in Delhi.” The AAP, however, is unfazed with this criticism. Spokesperson Malwinder Singh was reported saying: “Mr Kejriwal is our national convener. We always take his guidance… if constructive steps are taken for betterment for Punjab… then the Opposition should support.” AAP swept the Punjab Assembly polls last month with 92 of the 117seat Assembly. Ruling Congress got 18, Shiromani Akali Dal three, BJP two and BSP and Independents one each.

BJP wins in UP legislative council polls, loses Varanasi

NEW DELHI, APR 12 ( AGENCIES): The Bharatiya Janata Party has trounced the Opposition in the biennial elections to the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Council or the Upper House, reports The Print. The party, however, has lost Varanasi, the parliamentary constituency of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. BJP’s Dr Sudama Patel conceded it to independent candidate Annapurna Singh, wife of strongman Brijesh Kumar Singh.

Of the 37 seats vacant in the 100-member House, 36 went for votes on Saturday. The BJP was way ahead in over 30 seats to get a majority — and is the first time in decades that it will have won both Houses in Uttar Pradesh. It has already won nine seats unopposed — a thumping endorsement of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath’s rising stature. The voters in these elections were MPs, MLAs, city councillors and village representatives like pradhans.

MUMBAI, APR 12 (PTI): BJP leader Kirit Somaiya on Tuesday approached the Bombay High Court challenging the order of a sessions court here that denied him anticipatory bail in a case of alleged misappropriation of over Rs 57 crore funds collected to save the decommissioned aircraft carrier INS Vikrant from dismantling in 2014. Somaiya, through his counsel Niranjan Mundargi, moved the HC claiming that the sessions court’s order issued on Monday was erroneous. In his plea in the high court, Kirit Somaiya has said that the complaint was delayed and filed after nine years. He said that similar donations had also been collected by other political parties including Shiv Sena and Congress. He further said that the drive was not conducted by him in an individual capacity but at the party level.

Dr Abhay Bang

NAGPUR, APR 12 (PTI): Renowned Gandhian and social activist Dr Abhay Bang has said the feeling of religious hatred that is getting filled in the minds of people at present will stay on for the next 70 years, with the youth getting more affected by it than elders. He was speaking on the subject ‘Sadhya Stithi aani Gandhi Vichaar’ on Sunday at a book release function at Sarvodaya Ashram and touched upon a wide range of issues, including capitalism, global warming and violence. “The feeling of religious hatred is being filled in the minds of people. The poison which is being spread now will stay on for the next 70 years. Its effect on the youth is much more than elders,” he said. He claimed fundamentalism increased in the country from 1980 and cited the rise of the BJP from a party with just two Lok Sabha seats in 1984 to its dominant position now on the back of the Babri Masjid-Ram Temple issue. He said the RSS moulds the minds of people by using educational institutions, literature, drama etc.

Cong expels ex-MLA after he called new Punjab chief ‘corrupt’ NEW DELHI, APR 12 ( AGENCIES): Former MLA Surjit Dhiman’s expulsion from the Congress Sunday for “anti-party activities” is apparently an attempt by the high command to warn dissenters, ThePrint has learnt, reports The Print. Dhiman was expelled a day after he questioned the appointment of Amarinder Singh Raja Warring as the new Punjab Congress president. While All India Congress Committee (AICC) in-charge for Punjab and Chandigarh Harish Chaudhary issued the expulsion order stating that indiscipline would not be tolerated at any cost, sources in the Congress said the move was a message to any dissenters who may be thinking of speaking out against the recent appointments, especially with the party’s organisational elections scheduled to begin in June. The elections will culminate in the appointment of a new national Congress president. At present, Sonia Gandhi is heading the party as interim chief. Dhiman, considered a close aide of Warring’s predecessor Navjot Singh Sidhu, had lashed out at the former state transport minister hours after he was named the new Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee (PPCC) chief Saturday. Speaking to reporters Saturday night, Dhiman had accused Warring of being a “novice” and an “opportunist”. He had also claimed that Warring faced allega-

tions of corruption when he was president of the Indian Youth Congress (IYC), the party’s youth wing. Dhiman had further alleged that Sidhu was not given a second term as PPCC chief due to “vested interests”. Dhiman’s explusion comes at a time when the Punjab Congress has seen months of infighting, especially among its top leaders, which is seen as one of the reasons for the party’s stunning defeat in the recently held assembly elections, due to which it was ousted from power in the state by the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP). Meanwhile, Warring and the other newly-appointed office bearers of Punjab Congress met Congress leader Rahul Gandhi at his residence in Delhi Monday. The new appointees are former food minister and two-time MLA Bharat Bhushan Ashu, who has been named the new PPCC working president, Qadian MLA Partap Singh Bajwa, who has been appointed the Congress’ Legislative Party (CLP) leader in the Punjab assembly, and Chabbewal MLA Dr Raj Kumar, who is the new deputy CLP leader.

As per the high court’s website, Somaiya’s plea is likely to be heard on April 19. Special Judge R K Rokade, while rejecting Somaiya’s anticipatory bail on Monday, had said that there was prima facie proof including photographs, which showed that funds were collected for the restoration of INS Vikrant. The court had said that some pictures showed that Somaiya had collected money and pointed out a letter saying that he was going to deposit the money with the (Maharashtra) governor, but the same was not deposited with the state governor’s office. An FIR was registered at Trombay police station following a complaint by an ex-Army man claiming that a donation drive was started by Somaiya in 2013 to prevent the decommissioned warship from being dismantled and scrapped.

AAP the ladder

re-poll surveys proved correct after results of five states that went to the polls in February were declared on March 10. The BJP romped home in UP, Manipur and held on to Goa and Uttarakhand. The AAP, as also predictably wrested Punjab from a faction-ridden Congress. Though the BJP retained all four states, what has made a tremendous impact on the non-BJP opposition parties is the spectacular victory of the Aam Admi Party (AAP) which won 92 of 117 seats in Punjab. The only time a single party has won about these many seats in Punjab since 1977 – the first year when the state elections were held on 117 seats – was in 1992, when Congress won 87. The AAP now joins the ranks of the Congress as being the only nonBJP and non-NDA party to rule in two states- Delhi and Punjab. Having savoured a magnificent victory and with two states under its belt, the AAP has positioned itself as the main contender to the BJP at state and national level. AAP is going all-out to give the BJP a run for its money in Gujarat as well as Himachal Pradesh, where elections are scheduled in December this year. Since decades, the BJP and Congress have been the dominating political forces in Gujarat, but according to political observers, like in Delhi, the AAP now has a good chance to take on the BJP in Modi and Shah’s own home state. The success of the AAP in sweeping yet another state has led to a growing number of opposition parties believe that the AAP is the possible ‘national and natural replacement for the Congress’. The AAP has not come this far since its maiden electoral fray in 2013 when it won the second largest vote and had to form an opportunistic post-poll alliance with Congress, the very party it targeted under it anti-corruption barrage against the Shiela Dikshit government. The AAP government fell and in 2015 it returned with a bang winning 60 out of 70 seats while the Congress, wracked by infighting, had to suffer an inglorious exit. In 2017, Modi recognised the threat that AAP’s ideology posed not only to his government but to the Hindu rashtra project, and tried his level best to destroy it, but failed. However, at times politics also bring foes together when AAP kept mum over the organised pogrom in north-east Delhi in January 2020 by right wing activists. This was a tactical coexistence between BJP with AAP in Delhi rather than the other way around. As the AAP’s political stock rises, the BJP has become nervous in Delhi where it has postponed civic polls in Delhi. The AAP is now aiming to push the ineffective and comatose Congress off its position as the main challenger to BJP. The AAP is snapping at Congress’s heels in Gujarat, Himachal Pradesh, Karnataka and beyond but the Congress continues to be focussed on the Gandhis. The AAP has also rebuffed the overtures of the TMC to come together to form an all-party alliance of non-BJP parties. Indeed, the AAP is not willing to play second fiddle either to the Congress, which it seeks to elbow out or the TMC which is ruling in only one state and seen more of a West Bengal party.

DailyDevotion Complete and Effective Dominion

Death no longer has dominion over Him.…the life that He lives, He lives to God. Likewise you also, reckon yourselves to be dead indeed to sin, but alive to God… —Romans 6:9-11

Co-Eternal Life. Eternal life is the life which Jesus Christ exhibited on the human level. And it is this same life, not simply a copy of it, which is made evident in our mortal flesh when we are born again. Eternal life is not a gift from God; eternal life is the gift of God. The energy and the power which was so very evident in Jesus will be exhibited in us by an act of the absolute sovereign grace of God, once we have made that complete and effective decision about sin. “You shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you…” (Acts 1:8)— not power as a gift from the Holy Spirit; the power is the Holy Spirit, not something that He gives us. The life that was in Jesus becomes ours because of His Cross, once we make the decision to be identified with Him. If it is difficult to get right with God, it is because we refuse to make this moral decision about sin. But once we do decide, the full life of God comes in immediately. Jesus came to give us an endless supply of life— “… that you may be filled with all the fullness of God” (Ephesians 3:19). Eternal life has nothing to do with time. It is the life which Jesus lived when He was down here, and the only Source of life is the Lord Jesus Christ. Even the weakest saint can experience the power of the deity of the Son of God, when he is willing to “let go.” But any effort to “hang on” to the least bit of our own power will only diminish the life of Jesus in us. We have to keep letting go, and slowly, but surely, the great full life of God will invade us, penetrating every part. Then Jesus will have complete and effective dominion in us, and people will take notice that we have been with Him.

The future of Left politics in India

he Communist Party of India (Marxist) had re-elected Sitaram Yechury as the party’s General Secretary for an unprecedented third successive term during its recently held 23rd Party Congress at Kannur, Kerala. The Kannur Congress of the CPI (M) came at the time when its most powerful fraternal ideological partner i.e. Communist Party of China (CPC) is preparing to hold its 20th Party Congress towards the end of this year where its paramount leader Xi Jinping too will be seeking during the Congress an unprecedented third term to remain at the top of the CPC’s power echelon, which would mean breaking the CPC’s tradition of two-terms limit for the party officials and leaders. While the CPC will hold its 20th Party Congress at the time the party keeps on consolidating its grip on power over China and the party and its ideology remain the only political force in the country, the CPI (M)’s Kannur Congress happened as India continues to witness a terminal decline of the Left-wing politics and its influence in the country. The Kannur Congress was thus more of a show of

E

strength by the party leaders and remnant of its followers to prove to the country that the Left party and the Left politics are still a force to reckon with, and that the Left still has lots to offer to the country. A significant political resolution adopted during the Congress, as part of its strategy to revive the party, include a call for “no alliance with the Indian National Congress (INC) at the national level”. This call for maintaining distance from the INC in the national politics is perhaps a course correction exercise from some of the historical electoral blunders committed by the party, which appears to be too little too late at this stage. It was indeed the mishandling of its relation with the INC in the recent past that had contributed significantly to its decline. It was in 1996 after the fall of the first BJP government at the center led by Atal Behari Vajpayee, which lasted for only 13 days, the Left was given a historic opportunity to form a government under the banner of the United Front which included the INC. The Left then under the veteran communist stal-

warts however decided to choose ideological commitment over political power in New Delhi, and refused the offer of power by the INC. Tragically in 2004, when the CPI (M) and its Left conglomerate secured the highest number of seats in Lok Sabha in the history of independent India, the new generation party leaders scripted the party’s decline by compromising its ideology by extending support to the INC-led UPA government just to keep BJP out of power, thereby failing the test of maintaining equidistance from both BJP and INC. The 2004 UPA-Left misadventure, the alliance which too did not last full five years term, marked the beginning of the end of the influence of left-wing politics in the country. The party, which has a proud history of providing the first political alternative to the nation during the heydays of INC, is today reduces itself to an insignificant political party. The Left-wing political phenomenon occupied a unique place in the history of post-Independent India and India’s electoral politics as its polity represents the conscience of the na-

tion without hitherto being part of any government at the center nor by constituting itself as a major opposition party. It was the Left during the last decades of pre-independent India and early decades of postindependent India that gave a unique political vision to India to look at politics beyond INC. This unique role of the Left in Indian politics eventually lost its significance, and the Left today has come to this point of decline because of the inability on the part of its new generation leaders to maintain equidistance from both the INC and BJP. The party never recovered from the historic blunder of 2004 where it had extended support to its ideologically opposite party INC just to keep the BJP out of power which was a tragic departure from its core ideology, and eventually losing the trust of its followers and the nation. Nearly two decades after the infamous INCLeft alliance, the Left is completely decimated from their traditional stronghold states of West Bengal and Tripura, leaving Kerala as the last political ground for the Left. If the past Left-INC alliance’s experiment had any lesson

 RESURRECTION POWER: Peter the betrayer could stand up to the powerful Sanhedrin council (composed of 70 religious leaders, plus the presiding high priest). The amazing miracle of the healing of the crippled man (Acts 3:1-10) provided Peter and John the occasion to witness to them boldly. “And with great power the apostles were giving their testimony to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus, and great grace was upon them all.” (Acts 4:33)  RESURRECTION GUARANTEED: “The Resurrection of Jesus and His assuring promises guarantees our resurrection. George Herbert rightly says, “Death used to be an executioner, but the resurrection of Christ makes him nothing but a gardener. When he tries to bury you, he’s really planting you, and you’re going to come up better than before.” Along with the Apostle Paul, we too can say, “Death is swallowed up in victory. O death, where is your victory? O death, where is your sting?” We have hope for this life and life after. (1 Cor. 15:19-23) “Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to men by which we must be saved.” (Acts 4:12) This was the message preached by Peter at Pentecost which brought 3,000 souls into the Kingdom! “He has risen” - three powerful words that would have been a good epitaph on Jesus’ tomb and because of which the power of sin and death have been broken. Easter is the earthshaking, spellbinding answer for all our fears, doubts, discouragements and disbeliefs. Come to Jesus as you are this season to receive forgiveness of sin and the eternal life He offers. Say this simple prayer and begin a new chapter in your life: “Dear Lord Jesus, I know that I am a sinner, and I ask for Your forgiveness. I believe You died for my sins and rose from the dead. I turn from my sins and invite You to come into my heart and life. I want to trust and follow You as my Lord and Savior.” Dr. Jose Managing Editor Forerunner magazine, Bangalore josetnithi@gmail.com

for the Left, then it is that the Left lending temporary and issue-based support for the INC did not make the Left stronger electorally nor does it prevent the inevitable rise of the BJP in India’s electoral politics. Any hope of revival of the Left party in India lies not only in its ability to fight against the saffron forces, ideologically and electorally but also in staying away from the politics of its historical and ideological rival – the INC. If there is one reason why the Left politics, despite its decline in electoral politics, is still needed in India today, it is because the Left can still represent the conscience of the nation at this time when the politics of the country is torn apart by a bi-polar political force of BJP and INC. If the Left can no longer represent the mandate of the people it can still represent the conscience of the people and nation. Left can still represent a unique political narrative, independent from the ruling dispensation and major opposition forces. It is also under the Left platform that the secular credentials of India can be defended and promoted in the country. Of course,

Secularism, which is one of the founding principles of India, can mean two things: hostility by the government towards religion and neutrality on the part of the government towards all religions. The people of the country definitely will want the Left forces to promote the latter, and take the lead in defending the right of all the citizens of the country to practice a religion of their choice without fear and coercion. The Left politics in India’s electoral politics may have already lost its relevance today, but it will continue to occupy a prominent place in Indian political discourse. When India’s two principal national political parties, BJP and INC, never look at politics beyond winning an election, and are permanently engaged in a relentless and dirty pursuit of power, the Left can provide a platform for its citizens to debate and discuss secularism, pluralism and diversity towards securing India and the need for giving good governance to the people of the country which is the real meaning of politics in a democracy. Russian invasion reveals what’s wrong-and right-with the U.N.

U

krainian President Volodymyr Zelensky had strong words for the United Nations on April 7. Speaking via remote video conference to the Security Council a day after he visited the scene of Russian atrocities in Bucha, near Kyiv, Mr. Zelensky depicted Moscow’s war against his country as a failure of the entire U.N. system. “It is obvious that the key institution of the world designed to combat aggression and ensure peace cannot work effectively,” he said. And Mr. Zelensky certainly had a point: Through resolutions that have the character of international law, the Security Council is supposed to be able to deter and punish clear-cut violations of the U.N. charter, such as the invasion of Ukraine that began Feb. 24. This has proved impossible, however, since the invader — Russia — is one of five nations empowered with a Security Council veto. Catch-22. Does this evident failure support Mr. Zelensky’s broader indictment of the U.N. system? Yes and no. Plainly, obstruction by Russian President Vladimir Putin’s representatives on the Security Council has prevented globally enforceable economic sanctions against Moscow, like those imposed on Iraq for its invasion of Kuwait in 1990 and on Iran for unlawful nuclear weapons development in 2006. It is even less conceivable that the council would authorize the use of force to stop Russia, as it did in response to North Korean aggression against South Korea in 1950, or Iraqi aggression against Kuwait in 1990. This is not a new problem, however; as the North Korea and Iraq exceptions prove, the historical rule is that greatpower rivalry prevents Security Council consensus. Other features of the U.N. system nevertheless retain some useful-

ness, as the current crisis has shown. The first is the charter itself, which, even if not strictly enforced due to the Russian veto, provided Ukraine with an irrefutable legal standard of aggression around which to rally domestic and international support. That norm became the basis of a General Assembly resolution, supported by 141 nations, deploring the Russian attack, defining it, albeit nonbindingly, as illegal aggression, and demanding its cessation. The United Nations has an internationally selected permanent staff, whose titular head — Secretary General António Guterres — has added his voice and prestige to condemnations of Russia’s conduct. The United Nations, in short, provided a forum, of acknowledged international legitimacy, through which the foes of Moscow’s aggression could apply political pressure to it and, indeed, to all nations, which had to state their positions for the record, contemporary and historical. Crucially, this was a forum that the Russians could influence but not control, as they do their own state-dominated legislatures and media. The truth can at least be stated in Turtle Bay, as Mr. Zelensky himself did. Obviously, the United Nations did not, by itself, keep the peace in Ukraine, any more than it did in dozens of other cases over the past 77 years. It needs reform, and the U.S.-backed proposal to suspend Russia from the U.N. Human Rights Council, which passed the General Assembly on Thursday, was a step in that direction. For all its defects, though, the United Nations still offers potential advantages to the cause of peace and security — in Ukraine and elsewhere. (As published in The Washington Post)

Swimming pools in Dimapur Sir,

Waterlogging, which is caused due to poor drainage systems and littering has been exacerbating its effect on transportation systems in Dimapur. The public is also at fault because they throw the garbage wherever they feel like and anyone who passes by the heart of the city would see garbage accumulated along the roadside. One major concern is also construction wastes which should be addressed because every year, the garbage flows to the drains and chokes them during rains and causes waterlogging. The sale of polythene bags should be completely banned in Dimapur while the roads which get waterlogged every season should be identified and water pumps should be installed to clear the water. If the water in the potholes remain, they become a breeding ground for mosquitoes which puts the public heath at risk. Modern drainage systems should also be put in place along with dry wells on the roads (at the distance) which could be used for storing water. We cannot blame the municipal councils every time, because issues such as this requires collective effort. It is also the duty of residents to keep drains in and around their houses clean. We should not throw garbage into the drains which is the main cause blocked drains, leading to waterlogging. In 2019, the government passed a citizenship law that critics said undermined India’s secular constitution by excluding Muslim migrants from neighbouring countries. The law was meant to grant Indian nationality to Buddhists, Christians, Hindus, Jains, Parsis and Sikhs who fled Afghanistan, Bangladesh and Pakistan before 2015. In the same year, soon after his 2019 re-election win, Modi’s government revoked the special status of Kashmir in a bid to fully integrate the Muslim-majority region with the rest of the country. To keep a lid on protests, the administration detained many Kashmir political leaders and sent many more paramilitary police and soldiers to the Himalayan region also claimed by Pakistan. M o d i ’s B h a r a t i ya Janata Party (BJP) recently banned wearing the hijab in classrooms in Karnataka state. Hardline Hindu groups later demanded such restrictions in more Indian states.

Some 50 people have been rescued so far from cable cars which were left dangling mid-air after a malfunction of the ropeway which saw trolley cars colliding on Sunday 4 pm. Two persons have died so far including one on Monday who fell to his death during a botched helicopter rescue attempt, while 12 persons who were injured are being treated in hospitals. Rescue operations are on by the combined teams of Indian Air Force, Army, ITBP, NDRF and district administration. Meanwhile, Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren announced a high-

Mohua Moitra KO L K AT A , A P R 1 2 (PTI): Condemning the alleged gang rape of a girl who later died in West Bengal’s Nadia district, Trinamool Congress MP Mohua Moitra on Tuesday said even consensual sex with a minor is considered rape as per law and the ruling party will not shield anyone. The statement of Moitra, who visited the girl’s family at Hanskhali, came a day after Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said the minor and one of the arrested accused, the son of a local Trinamool Congress leader, were in love and wondered whether she was pregnant. “The case has been registered under POCSO

Act. We know that even consensual sexual relationship with a minor is a crime as per law. This is a criminal act and there is no question of shielding anyone. It is unfair to blame the party, as the accused has been arrested,” she said. The girl died after she was allegedly gang-raped at a birthday party in the residence of the local TMC leader on April 5. She was bleeding profusely when she returned home and died later that night, according to her parents who lodged a police complaint on April 10. “Whatever has happened is a condemnable incident. The police are investigating the matter, and already a few arrests have been made. The identity of those arrested is that they are accused. Their political identity does not matter,” the Krishnanagar MP said.

BIHAR SHARIF, APR 12 (PTI): A loud explosion took place on Tuesday merely a few metres away from where Bihar Chief Minister was addressing a gathering in his home district of Nalanda. No casualties were reported so far, as police suspected it was a firecracker. Nalanda Superintendent of Police Ashok Mishra said that the incident took place in a high school in Silao, around 20 km from the district headquarters here. The suspected carrier of the explosive, identified as Shubham Kumar, was arrested from the spot. “Prima facie, it seems to be a firecracker but further details regarding the exact nature of the explosive and the motive of the suspected carrier are being investigated,” he said.

NEW DELHI, APR 12 (PTI): Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya on Tuesday played down apprehensions about XE variant of the coronavirus saying it is just another form of Omicron, and asked people to maintain precautions as the pandemic is not over yet. Addressing a press conference at the BJP headquarters where he spoke in detail about the central government’s measures to deal with the pandemic since its outbreak in 2020, he also said that it is up to experts to decide as far as starting vaccination of children below 12 years are concerned. He, though, noted that very few countries have gone for administering the jabs to children in this age group. To a question about the government fixing the price of precaution dose at Rs 225, he said it is the maximum price, and this may still come down due to competition in future as more vaccine manufacturers enter the market. The precaution dose is being provided free of cost for those above 60 years of age at government centres but others will have to get them at private facilities. While the COVID-19 situation is under control, the government is continuously monitoring it and advising states accordingly, Mandaviya said.

gana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) launched an agitation over the issue. This came a day after Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao, his entire state Cabinet, TRS MPs, state legislators and other party leaders staged a protest in Delhi, demanding the Centre to procure paddy from Telangana as was done from other states. The chief minister has set a 24-hour deadline for the Narendra Modi government to take a decision over the state’s demand. The State Cabinet is scheduled to meet in Hyderabad later in the day. It is likely to chalk out a future course of action. For the last two weeks, the TRS has been staging protests across Telangana to press its demand. The BJP also staged a counter-protest in Hyderabad on Monday, blaming the TRS government for the current situation. It demanded that the chief minister either procure paddy from farmers or quit his post.

NEW DELHI, APRIL 12 (IANS): Prime Minister Narendra Modi and US President Joe Biden discussed Ukraine during the virtual meet on Monday. The two leaders had an extensive exchange of views on several regional and global issues, such as the Covid-19 pandemic, global economic recovery, climate action, recent developments in South Asia and the IndoPacific region, and the situation in Ukraine, the Ministry of External Affairs said in a statement. The ministry said they also took stock of the significant progress made in bilateral relations in recent years. Both leaders have agreed that further strengthen the India-US Comprehensive Global Strategic Partnership which would be of tremendous benefit to the two countries, and would also contribute to global peace, prosperity and stability. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and Minister of External Affairs S. Jaishankar, who are in Washington

who spoke after Blinken at the briefing, did not comment on the human rights issue. Blinken’s remarks came days after U.S. Representative Ilhan Omar questioned the alleged reluctance of the U.S. government to criticize Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government on human rights. “What does Modi need to do to India’s Muslim population before we will stop considering them a partner in peace?” Omar, who belongs to President Joe Biden’s Democratic Party, said last week. Modi’s critics say his Hindu nationalist ruling party has fostered religious polarization since coming to power in 2014. Since Modi came to power, right-wing Hindu groups have launched attacks on minorities claiming they are trying to prevent religious conversions. Several Indian states have passed or are considering anti-conversion laws that challenge the constitutionally protected right to freedom of belief.

Speaking to Nagaland Post, Railway Bazar GB Nading Haining alleged that water logging was a regular phenomenon in the area even during short spells of rain. He said the residents in the area had been facing untold hardships every year due to waterlogging and had even been raising the issue, but to no avail. He said help had been sought from DMC to clear the clogged drains in the area. He held poor drainage system and blockage as the main reasons for water remaining stagnant in the area, thereby leading to a spike in vector-borne diseases. Haining recalled that five colonies had seven years back launched an agitation by blocking railway services, demanding the railway authorities to clear the clogged drains following inundation in the area even after a light shower. But, even after so much hue and cry, he regretted that the situation did not improve and remained an annual phenomenon.

New York’s fire department told the BBC it originally received a call about smoke inside the station. But officials arrived to find several people shot and injured. Police have said there are no active explosive devices inside the station at this time.

So, as the law stands, Nawaz Sharif will have to go to jail and then try to get relief from the Pakistani courts,” he added. Abbasi also stated that one of the main focuses of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif will be to hold accountable the head of the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) over using the institution for politically motivated and targeted actions taken on orders of former Prime Minister Imran Khan. “The NAB needs to be shut down and its officials need to be held accountable for framing fake cases against political figures,

US professor refers to India as a s***hole; singles out Brahmins PHILADELPHIA, APR 12 (IANS): University of Pennsylvania law professor Amy Wax made more inflammatory comments on a national conservative talk show Friday, slamming immigrants who are critical of the US, Philadelphia Inquirer reported. “There is just a tremendous amount of resentment and shame of non-western peoples against western peoples for western peoples’ outsized achievements and contributions,” Wax told political commentator Tucker Carlson on Fox. “It’s really unbearable.” Wax criticised Asian and South Asian Indian doctors at Penn Medicine, who she said, “Are on the

Abbasi also lashed out at sitting President Arif Alvi for not administering the oath taking ceremony of Shehbaz Sharif. Taking a jibe at Alvi’s profession as a dentist, Abbasi said that the President can keep working as long as his tooth doesn’t hurt too often. “The President is welcome to continue working if his tooth doesn’t hurt often,” he said. Talking about Imran Khan’s call for public protests and resignations from the Parliament, Abbasi said that Khan can keep himself on the streets and keep his demands of early elections to himself.

WTO sees war weighing on global trade growth GENEVA, APR 12 (AP): The World Trade Organisation is predicting that trade in goods will grow much less than previously expected this year, saying prospects for the global economy have darkened since the onset of Russia’s war in Ukraine. The Geneva-based World Trade Organisation on Tuesday pointed to multiple uncertainties in its forecast over the next two years because Russian and Ukrainian exports of items like food, oil and fertilisers are under threat from the war. It also cited the lingering impact of the COVID-19 pandemic -- notably from lockdowns in China. Director-General Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala described a “double whammy” from the conflict and the coronavirus. She said the war has caused “immense human suffering” in the region and its effect has rippled around the world, notably in poorer countries. The World Trade Organisation said its projections for world trade take into account factors like the impact of the war, sanctions on Russia, and lower demand around the world from lower business and consumer confidence. It said world merchandise trade volume is expected to grow 3% this year, down from a forecast of 4.7% before the war began.

LONDON/ KIEV, APR 12 (REUTERS/IANS): All options would be on table in response to any use of chemical weapons in Ukraine by Russia, British armed forces minister James Heappey said on Tuesday. British Foreign Minister Liz Truss on Monday said Britain was working with its partners to verify the details of reports Russian forces may have used chemical agents in an attack on Mariupol, where thousands are believed to have died under a near-seven week siege. “There are some things that are beyond the pale, and the use of chemical weapons will get a response and all options are on the table for what that response could be,” Heappey told Sky News, adding that British defence intelligence so far had been unable to verify the reports. “If chemical weapons have been used, that is a very important moment for our prime minister and other heads of government around the world to consider how we would respond to that,” Heappey told BBC TV. “(Russian) President (Vladimir) Putin should be clear that the use of chemi-

Ukraine probes

Ukrainian military officials are currently confirming information regarding the use of chemical weapons by Russian forces in Mariupol. H a n n a M a l i a r, Ukraine’s Deputy Minister of Defence, said on the national joint news broadcast, “We are currently confirming this information, trying to understand what it was. According to preliminary information, we can say that it is possible -- that it was, rather, phosphorous munition. Official information will be finalised later.” Maliar stressed that the risk of Russia deploying chemical weapons remains, and is quite high, Ukrayinska Pravda reported.

On the evening of April 11, it was reported that Russian soldiers dropped a poisonous substance of unknown origin on Mariupol. According to Andrii Biletsky, leader of the Azov regiment, the army of the Russian Federation deployed chemical weapons on the Azovstal plant, which is held by Azov fighters, the report said. The victims of the poisonous substance of unknown origin spread by Russian forces in Mariupol are in a relatively satisfactory condition, Azov Regiment has claimed. Civilian contact with the substance was minimal, as the epicentre was at a certain distance from civilian areas. Servicemen were somewhat closer. In a video released by the Azov Regiment, the victims describe seeing something resembling smoke or fog. The main symptoms of the victims are facial flushing, high blood pressure, dryness and a burning sensation in the nasopharynx and mucous membranes of the eyes, tachycardia, tinnitus, shortness of breath, and dizziness, Ukrayinska Pravda reported.

Singh and Jaishankar, who spoke after Blinken at the briefing, did not comment on the human rights issue. Take Care

No matter what you’ve heard or how badly you want relief, talk with your doctor or pharmacist before trying any home remedy. This is even more important if you take prescription or over-the-counter medications, because some can affect how drugs work. And keep in mind that many don’t have any research to back them up. Peppermint

This natural sweetener may work just as well for a cough as over-the-counter medicines. That could be especially helpful for children who aren’t old enough to take those. But don’t give it to an infant or a toddler younger than 1. There’s a small risk of a rare but serious kind of food poisoning that could be dangerous for them. And while you may have heard that “local” honey can help with allergies, studies don’t back that up. Turmeric

can be good for a cold. Studies show it can ease symptoms and help you get rid of it sooner. It also curbs swelling and clears out nasal fluids. Neti Pot You put a salt and warm water mixture in something that looks like a little teapot. Then pour it through one nostril and let it drain out the other. You have to practice a little, but once you get the hang of it, it can ease allergy or cold symptoms and may even help you get rid of a cold quicker. Just make sure you use distilled or cooled boiled water and keep your neti pot clean. Cinnamon

You may have heard that it can help control blood sugar for people who have prediabetes or diabetes. But there’s no evidence that it does anything for any medical condition. ohima celebrated World Art Day on theme “Colours of Nagaland”, at Old NST Complex. The programme was an initiative of Task Force for Music and Arts (TaFMA) in collaboration with visual artists of Nagaland to promote the development, fusion and expansion of art with the state. Speaking on the occasion, director Art & Culture department, Adela Moa said artists had a free way of expressing themselves without any laid down regulations nor were they bound by any rules in comparison with the government and private

firms. While stating that art was a creative form of expression to the world through the aid of brushes and colours without uttering a word, Moa acknowledged TaFMA for providing a platform to the artists. She urged upon the participants to take advantage of such initiatives and at the same time expand their creativity. Art and Drama Educator, Cynthia Kolakhe informed that the twoday art festival was an opportunity to focus on the arts education in schools and also in cultural perspective to pave the way for equitable education.

One special feature this year was including young kids to participate, as the inspiration has to start from the grass-root levels, Cynthia mentioned. TaFMA project director, Dr. Hovithal Sothu delivered the welcome note and informed that the prizes were sponsored by Tejo weaves. Over 10 visual artists have brought their works and 30 artists for the painting competition. The painting would be on display for the public and would be up for sale on April 13. ‘Stranger Things’ Season 4 Trailer Released by Netflix

N

etflix has released the first trailer for the long-awaited fourth season of Stranger Things. The trailer (below) shows the town of Hawkins facing a demonic threat with Eleven (Millie Bobby Brown) being told, “Without you, we can’t win this war.” The video is set to Journey’s 1983 classic “Separate Ways.” Creators Matt and Ross Duffer recently called season four their “Game of Thrones season,” since they’re telling a sprawling story with a large number of characters in different locations and it all adds up to their longest season (nine episodes). Here’s the official description of season four: “It’s been six months since the Battle of Starcourt, which brought terror and destruction to Hawkins. Struggling with the aftermath, our group of friends are separated for the first time — and navigating the complexities

of high school hasn’t made things any easier. In this most vulnerable time, a new and horrifying supernatural threat surfaces, presenting a gruesome mystery that, if solved, might finally put an end to the horrors of the Upside Down.” The season is being split into two parts. “Volume 1” of season four will debut May 27 (three years after season three aired). While the second half of the fourth

season, “Volume 2,” will debut July 1. The streamer also recently announced that the show’s fifth season will be its last. “Seven years ago, we planned out the complete story arc for Stranger Things,” creators Matt and Ross Duffer wrote in an open letter to fans last month. “At the time, we predicted the story would last four to five seasons. It proved too large to tell in four but — as you’ll see for

yourselves — we are now hurtling toward our finale. … It’s been a little while. With nine scripts, over eighthundred pages, almost two years of filming, thousands of visual effects shots and a runtime nearly twice the length of any previous season, Stranger Things 4 was the most challenging season yet, but also the most rewarding one. Everyone involved is incredibly proud of the results, and we can’t wait to share it with you. Given the unprecedented length, and to get it to you as soon as possible, Season 4 will be released in two volumes.” (The Hollywood Reporter)

NEW DELHI, APR 12 (PTI): Saina Nehwal’s chances of defending her title at the Commonwealth Games looks bleak as she has decided to skip the selection trials for the upcoming multi-sport events. The big-ticket events include the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham and the Hangzhou Asian Games. The selection trials are scheduled here from April 15 to 20. The 32-year-old Hisar-born shuttler, a twotime CWG gold medallist and 2012 London Olympics bronze medallist, has informed the Badminton Association of India (BAI) about her decision to skip the trials. “Saina has written to BAI, informing her decision to not play in the trials which will be the only

tournament to pick players for CWG, Asiad and Thomas and Uber Cup,” a BAI source told PTI. The CWG squad will consist of 10 members with equal number of men and women, while the Asian Games and Thomas & Uber Cup contingents will have 20 members each, including 10 men and 10 women. The BAI has made it clear that players inside the top 15 in the BWF rankings will be picked directly, while the rest will be chosen from the trials which will see participation of shuttlers ranked between 16 to 50 in the latest world rankings, released on March 29. The national governing body will also be “finalising probables for the senior core group for the 2024 Olympic Games” during the trials. Mumbai FC becomes first CSK beat RCB; register first win of the season Indian club to win in AFC CL

NAVI MUMBAI, APR 12 (PTI): Shivam Dube and Robin Uthappa’s scintillating strokeplay was complemented by a stellar performance from the spinners as Chennai Super Kings notched up a 23-run win over Royal Challengers Bangalore to open their account in the IPL here on Tuesday. Invited to bat, Dube (95 not out) and Uthappa (88 off 50 balls) conjured up commanding unbeaten half-centuries, smashing 17 sixes and 9 fours between them en route to a 165-run stand -- the overall highest for the third wicket and the highest of this season -- to take CSK to an imposing 216 for 4. In reply, RCB was restricted to 193 for nine, with young spinner Maheesh Theekshana (4/33) and skipper Ravindra Jadeja (3/39) running riot with seven wickets between them in CSK’s 200th IPL game. With this win, the defending champions finally snapped their four match losing streak, while for Bangalore, it was just their second loss in five matches. Chasing an improbable 217, RCB lost skipper Faf du Plessis (8), who

(PTI) became Theekshana’s first victim and star-batter Virat Kohli (1), who was removed by Mukesh Choudhary, inside the first five overs. In-form Anuj Rawat (12) too fell inside the power-play after being trapped in front of the wicket by Theekshana. The 21-year-old spinner from Sri Lanka, who was picked for Rs 70 lakh in the mega auction, then cleaned up debutant Suyash Prabhudessai (34)

and Shahbaz Ahmed (41), who tried to take the game deep with their quick 60run stand off 33 balls. Theekshana castled Prabhudessai, after the ball beat the inside edge and crashed into the middle stump and then used the carrom ball to dismiss Ahmed and cap off a match-winning spell under the lights. Dinesh Karthik did create a scare with his 14ball 34, but that was too little and too late as CSK

heaved a sigh of relief with their first points on the board. At the start, Dube and Uthappa feasted on the RCB attack, smashing scintillating half-centuries. Earlier, invited to bat, Uthappa and Dube showed their six hitting prowess as they rallied the innings after CSK was reeling at 36 for 2. W h i l e U t h a p p a ’s knock was studded with nine sixes and four boundaries, Dube also hit eight

sixes and five fours in his unbeaten 46-ball knock. Both Dube and Uthappa posted their highest IPL scores to set up the match for defending champions CSK. Uthappa missed a deserving hundred as he fell in the penultimate over which yielded 14 runs and then Dube compounded the bowling team’s woes by hitting two sixes in the final over to finish the innings in style. RCB badly missed the services of Harshal Patel, who had left the bio-bubble following the death of his sister on Saturday. The RCB players wore black armbands in the match to show solidarity with Patel and his family. BRIEF SCORE: Chennai Super Kings: 216 for 4 in 20 overs (Robin Uthappa 88, Shivam Dube 95 not out; Wanindu Hasaranga de Silva 2/35). Royal Challengers Bangalore: 193 for 9 in 20 overs (Shahbaz Ahmed 41, Maheesh Theekshana 4/34, Ravindra Jadeja 3/39). WEDNESDAY’S MATCH

Mumbai Indians Vs Punjab Kings: 7:30 pm

RIYADH, APR 12 (PTI): Mumbai City FC scripted history as they fought back from a goal down to stun Iraqi giants Air Force Club 2-1 and become the first Indian club to win a game at the top-tier AFC Asian Champions League. After conceding in the 59th minute of the group B fixture, Mumbai City, who won the Indian Super League Shield and trophy in the 2020-21 season, drew level with a penalty by Diego Mauricio in the 70th minute after he was brought down in the box. Defender Rahul Bheke scored his team’s crucial winning goal, with a header in the 75th minute following a corner on Monday night. Mumbai had lost their opening match to Al Shabab 0-3. After a goalless first half, substitute Hammadi Ahmad gave three-time AFC Cup champions Air Force Club the lead before Mumbai City rallied with goals from Maurcio and Bheke to seal the historic win at the King Fahd International Stadium in Riyadh. Air Force Club’s Alaa Abbas was causing all sorts of problems for Mumbai City but the forward should have done better in the ninth minute when his tame effort was easily collected by goalkeeper Phurba Lachenpa. Mumbai City had their first look at goal just before the half-hour mark, Ahmed Jahouh finding space before setting up for Lallianzuala Chhangte, who blasted his long-range effort wide. At the other end, Air Force Club missed a chance after Abbas headed

a Dhurgham Ismail delivery high above the bar before the latter tried to force his shot from a tight angle. H a k e e m S h a k i r ’s side were almost caught off guard in the 31st minute when Mumbai City’s Ahmed Jahouh sent an inviting cross into the danger area but Diego Maurcio couldn’t keep his headed effort on target. The best chance of the half fell to Air Force Club in the 34th minute but Hussein Jabbar struggled to guide Ismail’s effort into the back of net from close range while Lachenpa was forced into a fingertip save three minutes later, denying Abbas’ effort.

Platini to Jr. Hockey WC: India loses to England in bronze match Fokina stuns Djokovic in Monte Carlo Blatter, face corruption

Novak Djokovic, left, hugs Alejandro Davidovich Fokina after their second round match, Tuesday. (AP) M O N T E C A R L O, APE 12 (REUTERS): World number one Novak Djokovic crashed to a three-set defeat in only his fourth match of the season, falling 6-3 6-7(5) 6-1 to unseeded Alejandro Davidovich Fokina in the second round of the Monte Carlo Masters on Tuesday. The 20-times Grand Slam champion endured a tough start to the year as he was unable to defend

his Australian Open title in January after being deported from the country for being unvaccinated against Covid-19. Djokovic, who only played three matches in Dubai ahead of the Masters 1000 event in Monaco, struggled to find his range early in the contest as Spaniard Davidovich Fokina raced to a 4-1 lead before taking the opening set on Court Rainier III.

The world number 46 grabbed an early break in the second set to go up 3-0 but Djokovic battled back before overcoming issues with a wobbly serve to level the contest following a tight tiebreak. Fokina then raised his game in the decider, preying on mistakes made by a tiring Djokovic and completed the victory as the Serb found the net. “This win is so special to me because I grew up watching Nole (Djokovic) and I’m a big fan of his,” Davidovich Fokina said in his post-match interview. “I knew Nole didn’t have the confidence because he didn’t play a lot this season... I had my chances in the beginning of the match and I took them. “When he won the second set it was tough mentally, but I work hard to be focused. I had to be prepared for the war.” Stefanos Tsitsipas will begin the defence of his title at the event with a second-round clash against 2019 champion Fabio Fognini while Grigor Dimitrov plays Dusan Lajovic for a spot in the round of 16.

trial in June

ZURICH, APR 12 (REUTERS): Former FIFA President Sepp Blatter and ex-UEFA President Michel Platini will go on trial in June to face Swiss corruption charges over a $2 million payment that world soccer’s governing body made to Platini, the court announced on Tuesday. Both Blatter and Platini have repeatedly denied wrongdoing in the past over the incident, for which Swiss prosecutors indicted them in November. Prosecutors allege Blatter improperly arranged the payment to Platini, who captained France to victory in the 1984 European Championship, in 2011 for consulting work. Blatter and Platini said the payment was for backdated salary. Both are suspected of fraud and other charges amid what became part of the biggest corruption scandal to shake FIFA. The trial before the Swiss Federal Criminal Court is due to start on June 8 and last until June 22, the court said on its website.

P OTC H E F S T RO O M , APR 12 (PTI): Mumtaz Khan’s brace went in vain as the Indian women’s hockey team’s dream of reclaiming a bronze medal from the FIH Junior World Cup went up in smoke, losing 0-3 in the shoot-out to England after both the teams were locked 2-2 at the end of regulation time here on Tuesday. Mumtaz, India’s highest scorer in the tournament with eight strikes, scored two field goals in the 21st and 47th minutes, but those were cancelled by Millie Giglio (18th) and Claudia Swain (58th) to take the third-fourth play-off match to shoot-out. The Indians cut a sorry figure in the shoot-out as Olympian Sharmila Devi, skipper Salima Tete and Sangita Kumari faltered, while England’s Katie Curtis, Swain and Maddie Axford found the back of the Indian net to avenge their loss at the same stage in the 2013 edition. Contrary to the final result, it was India which had the better statistics in the match in all aspects, be it possession, circle penetra-

The Indians, though, started the match on a positive note, securing two penalty corners in quick time just after the start but the English defence was up to the task to deny their opponents. Lalrindiki then had an excellent chance to put India ahead but she fired wide from close range with only the English goalkeeper to beat. England took the lead three minutes into the second quarter through a lucky goal.

Giglio’s weak shot on goal from inside the circle bobbled towards India goalkeeper Bichu Devi Kharibam, who mistimed her kick as the ball went past between her legs inside the post. England’s joy lasted just three minutes as India equalised through, who else, than Mumtaz. Mumtaz scored her seventh goal of the tournament by beautifully controlling a pass from the right flank with one touch and then slotted the ball into the English goal to draw parity. Both the teams tried hard to take the initiative thereafter but failed to cre-

ate any real scoring opportunity to go into the halfway break locked at 1-1. It was a disappointing display by both India and England after the change of ends, dishing out frustrating and cagey hockey for most part of the next 15 minutes. Just 11 minutes into the fourth quarter, England won a penalty corner but Bichu Devi made an excellent save to deny Maddie Axford. India made the scoreline 2-1 in the 47th minute, yet again through Mumtaz, who cooly lifted over the English goalkeeper following a goal-mouth melee. Trailing by a goal, a desperate England pulled off their goalkeeper for an extra player six minutes from the final hooter, and mounted numerous raids on the Indian citadel, which resulted in two penalty corners but the Indian defence stood firm till then. But two minutes from full time, the Indian defence finally wilted under pressure when Swain scored the equaliser with a slap shot past Bichu Devi after receiving a pass from the right flank.

Victoria to host 2026 CWG across cities Shooting, wrestling not in initial list of sports LONDON, APR 12 (PTI): Victoria will host the 2026 Commonwealth Games with the Australian state’s regional centres organising the majority of events in a break from the traditional single host city model. The Games will be staged in March 2026 across multiple cities and regional hubs including Melbourne, Geelong, Bendigo, Ballarat and Gippsland, each with its own athletes’ village. The opening ceremony will take place at the iconic 100,000-capacity Melbourne Cricket Ground, the Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) announced on Tuesday. The announcement follows an exclusive dialogue period between the CGF, Commonwealth Games Australia (CGAus) and Victoria. An initial list of 16 sports, including Twenty20 cricket, have been put forward for the Games, with further sports to be added later this year. The initial list, however, does not feature disciplines such as shooting and wrestling, sports in which

Archery also does not feature in the list. Premier of Victoria Daniel Andrews said: “It’s a great honour to have Victoria chosen as the host venue for the 2026 Commonwealth Games - we can’t wait to welcome the world to all of our state. “The Commonwealth Games in regional Victoria is great for jobs, hospitality and our economy.” Australia has staged the Commonwealth Games on five occasions, with Victoria playing host to the Melbourne 2006 Games; widely considered one of the most successful editions of the event in history. The country

has also staged the Games in Sydney in 1938, Perth in 1962, Brisbane in 1982 and most recently Gold Coast in 2018. Victoria has also hosted the Commonwealth Youth Games in Bendigo in 2004. CGF President Dame Louise Martin said: “The Commonwealth Games Federation is absolutely delighted to award the 2026 Commonwealth Games to Victoria. “Commonwealth Games Australia and the Victorian Government have set out a bold and innovative vision for hosting our major multi-sport event. In Victoria, we believe we have found the perfect partner for the next stage of our journey.” As per the CGF’s new “strategic

roadmap” unveiled at its 2021 General Assembly on October 11, athletics and swimming will be the only compulsory sports in the CWG from the 2026 edition, allowing host cities greater freedom to include disciplines of their choice from a proposed core list of 22 sports. The proposed core list of the Commonwealth Games Federation after a review includes shooting, wrestling and archery. Disciplines that have previously been listed as optional sports such as T20 cricket, beach volleyball and 3x3 basketball were also brought under the proposed core list of sports. The roadmap was approved at the CGF’s General Assembly, which was held virtually last year. The 2026 Games will be the 23rd edition of the major multisport competition, which first began in Hamilton, Canada in 1930. Victoria is a worldleading major events and tourism destination. The state has a strong track record for staging high profile sporting competitions including The Australian Open tennis grand slam, the Melbourne Formula 1 Grand Prix and the Melbourne Cup.
