Renewed efforts on Naga solution Panel on Naga issue to meet PM next week

Spl. Correspondent

NEW DELHI, MAY 13 (NPN): With the long-expected solution to the Naga political issue now drawing closer to the Nagaland state assembly election scheduled by end of February 2023, the government of India has renewed its efforts to get all Naga Political Groups (NPGs) on board. Expectations for the long-awaited solution was raised after then government of India’s Interlocutor for Naga Peace Talk, R.N. Ravi announced that over 24 years of negotiations would officially conclude on October 31,2019. However, that has not happened as the NSCN (I-M) insisted that the Framework

UAE President Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed dies ABU DHABI, MAY 13 (PTI): The United Arab Emirates’ President and ruler of Sheikh Khalifa A b u D h a bi Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan passed away on Friday, local media reports quoting the Ministry of Presidential Affairs said. He was 73. Sheikh Khalifa served as the President of the UAE and ruler of Abu Dhabi since November 3, 2004. The Ministry of Presidential Affairs has announced 40 days of mourning, a report said. Born in 1948, Sheikh Khalifa was the second President of the UAE and the 16th Ruler of the Emirate of Abu Dhabi. He was the eldest son of Sheikh Zayed. India announces oneday state mourning: India announced one day of state mourning on Saturday. According to a communication issued by the Home Ministry to all states on Friday, as a mark of respect to the departed dignitary, the Government has decided to observe one-day state mourning on May 14 throughout the country, during which the national flag will be flown at halfmast and no official entertainment. Expressing grief, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that Sheikh Khalifa was a great statesman and visionary leader under whom relations between the two countries prospered.

Agreement was inclusive of Naga flag and constitution (Yehzabo), but which had been rejected outright by the government of India. Despite the prolonged delay for solution, union home minister Amit Shah has been urging upon the state government to have all NPGs on board at the earliest for Naga solution. While legislators maintain they are ready to resign en masse to pave way when solution is arrived; they have however put a rider that this won’t happen if they are elected to the new house. Though there is still much speculation about likely solution on whether it could be achieved before or after election, the focus has again shifted to New Delhi where the Centre’s representative for Naga political talks A.K. Mishra is meeting with a ten-member NSCN (I-M) delegation and also another delegation from the WC, NNPGs. Interestingly, the

state political parties who have formed the all-party Core Committee on Naga Political Issue headed by the chief minister Neiphiu Rio are scheduled to meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home minister Amit Shah and other leaders next week in Delhi. On Friday, a 10-member NSCN (I-M) delegation comprising its top leaders held a meeting with Mishra on pertinent issues concerning a final agreement to be inked. Unlike in the past, sources informed Nagaland Post that this time there is a sustained effort to resolve whatever issues so that solution before assembly election is possible. Sources said that the Government was clear that meetings cannot go off and on perennially as issues raised have to be resolved in a serious and sustained manner even if it takes days or weeks. The government of India has also made known

that it is eager to ink an early agreement for one solution with all Naga stakeholders. On the demand for flag and constitution, the sources said that these could be discussed post solution. As Nagas have been yearning for a final solution, sources said the primary concern for the Centre is to deliver the promise made by the Prime Minister. As reported, Centre has said on numerous occasions that the ball is in the court of the NPGs to agree on one solution acceptable to all, since there cannot be two solutions for one issue. Meanwhile, a delegation of WC, NNPGs led by its convenor and GPRN/ NSCN ato kilonser N. Kitovi Zhimomi have arrived in Delhi. It was learnt that they are scheduled to meet Mishra. tion of President’s Rule in the State. NDPP said that the allegations were baseless, misleading and cannot warrant invoking Article 365 of the Constitution of India. Ruling NDPP maintained that the Constitution of India, on which the “very fabrics of democracy of this great nation” were enshrined in, cannot be treated in “such a flippant manner!” It said that simply raising allegations of corruption and non-disbursement of salaries were “not reasons enough” to invite invoking Article 365. On RPP’s allegation that the present UDA government, an opposition-less government,

was an undemocratic one, NDPP said “Nowhere in the Constitution of India does it say that an opposition-less government/house is illegal or not permissible.” Asserting that members of the 13th NLA were neither self-styled leaders nor have they forced themselves to sit in the house of the people, NDPP said they were democratically elected by their respective constituents to represent them. NDPP therefore said that demand for dissolution of the NLA and imposition of PR was against the very tenets of a democracy. It said the demand was “in fact an insult” to not only

NDPP through its media and communication committee accused RPP of levelling several unfounded allegations against the democratically elected government in its demand for the imposi-

ANPSA welcomes notification to delink Hr Sec from degree colleges D I M A P U R , M AY 1 3 (NPN): All Nagaland Private Schools’ Association (ANPSA) has welcomed the State government’s notification delinking Classes 11 and 12 from degree colleges and hoped that it would be implemented in letter and spirit during this academic year. Appreciating the government notification, ANPSA president Nini Sekhose, vice-president Father Jacob Charale and general secretary PJ Nathan said the first such order came out in 2013. As the New Education Policy (NEP), 2020 had

recommended schooling to be 5+3+3+4, taking into account the pre-primary years of schooling too, the association explained that students from classes 9 to 12 were taken as a block, more or less requiring the same kind of teaching and learning in a school atmosphere. It stressed that degree college should be a whole new exciting experience for students where they step into a new world with different methodologies of teaching and learning, different expectations and assessment patterns.

NEW DELHI, MAY 13 (PTI): South-west monsoon, considered as the lifeline of India’s agri-based economy, is likely to bring first showers to Kerala by May 27, five days earlier than the normal onset date, the weather office announced on Friday. “This year, the onset of southwest monsoon over Kerala is likely to be earlier than the normal date of onset. The monsoon onset over Kerala is likely to be on May 27 with a model error of four days,” India Meteorological Department (ID) said. In 2009, the southwest monsoon had reached

Kerala on May 23. Weather scientists attribute the early onset of southwest monsoon over Kerala to the influence of the remnants of cyclone Asani that triggered the cross-equatorial flow, a key factor for the seasonal rains. The early arrival of the south-west monsoon comes at a time when parts of north-west India were experiencing extremely high maximum temperatures. O n T h u r s d ay, t h e weather office had forecast the onset of south-west monsoon over Andaman & Nicobar islands on May 15, nearly a week ahead of

schedule. “In association with enhanced cross equatorial winds, conditions are becoming favorable for the advance of Southwest Monsoon into South Andaman Sea, Nicobar Islands and some parts of southeast Bay of Bengal, around May 15,” IMD said in a statement. At the same time, the weather office made it clear that past data suggest that there is no association of the date of monsoon advance over the Andaman Sea either with the date of monsoon onset over Kerala or with the seasonal monsoon rainfall over the country.

slowly losing fauna species”. Encouraging the villagers to never lose hope, he said the initiative was not for short term benefit, but long-term investment. Tokaho said the government might not be able to remunerate their sacrifices, but their initiative will be priceless in the long run. He also said that this initiative was for their own benefit. Further, Tokaho called upon the volunteers, village leaders and CCA members to cooperate with one another. Speaking at the programme, Dr. Prabhat Kumar lauded the villagers for taking hardships in building the resting shed at the hill top. (Cont’d on p-8)

RSU celebrates platinum jubilee

Correspondent

KO H I M A , M AY 1 3 (NPN): Rengma Students’ Union (RSU) celebrated the platinum jubilee (75 years) on the theme “Beyond Mediocrity: Reviving Virtues, Unleashing Creativity”, at RSA ground, here, on Friday. Congratulating the student union and the Rengma community for attaining platinum jubilee, minister for Housing and Mechanical, Tongpang Ozukum urged upon the members of Rengma community to work harder in order to be at par with others. The speech was read out by chief information commissioner, I. Meyionen Jamir on behalf of the minister, who was to grace the occasion as honoured guest. The minister also paid respects to founding members of RSU who took the first step towards this accomplishment and urged upon RSU to treasure the contributions and sacrifices

of the past leaders. He said Rengmas contributed immensely for the cause of the Nagas and that their contributions were well documented in the Naga history. Meanwhile, I. Meyionen Jamir reminded the youth that government has banned appointment against retirement vacancies since March 2020 except certain posts in few departments to phase out unwanted posts in order to cut down expenditures on salaries and pension and

therefore employment opportunities in the government had become difficult. In this regard, he suggested RSU to conduct career counselling at Class IX and X which he said, was the right stage. Yo u t h S e c r e t a r y CRBC Zunpha Tseminyu Jonathan Mesen who was the theme speaker said the present generation has bartered away the rich and life-affirming virtues passed down by the elders in exchange for social acceptance.

He pointed out that if Nagas desired to thrive and flourish, there was a need to revive virtues and these virtues would guide one’s minds to breed and foster creativity. Jonathan also reminded that Naga society would not progress as long as blame game and accusation does not end. In his presidential address, RSU president Heiko Kent said attaining 75 years was an important step to continue building a lasting relationship

NBOCWWB to re-examine state expenditures

DIMAPUR: Nagaland Building & Other Construction Workers’ Welfare Board (NBOCWWB) chairman, Dr. Kekhrie Yhome on Friday, informed that they were initiating a re-examination of state expenditures for the past three financial years on a department by department basis. According to a DIPR report, Dr. Kekhrie Yhome was speaking at the consultative meeting of NBOCWWB and Finance department with engineering departments in the conference hall of the New Secretariat, Kohima. The chairman said NBOCWWB was a health and welfare-oriented board with enforcement powers and that the welfare fund was incorporated into the board where fund was chiefly derived from 1% workers’ welfare cess levied on “cost of construction”. He said cess was not a tax or revenue, but a “fee” which was constitutionally and legislatively enacted assessment and therefore the collection was strictly compulsory. Reiterating directives from the Supreme

Court of India, Dr. Kekhrie said the state’s department of Finance issued standing notifications in 2012 to various concerned departments for compulsory cess collection. He said many establishments, including ministries under the government of India, state departments, and government-run public sector undertakings operating in the state have not been dutifully remitting or reporting their cess payments to the board. In this regard, Dr. Kekhrie informed that delay in payment was another concern, and for a salaryeconomy state like Nagaland, the huge financial burden on public expenditure, he said, would immediately trigger economic collapse and the public would suffer economic depression for decades. He also said the board, on its part would enforce honesty in financial administration by various cesspayable agencies, and where erring officials were found, the board would initiate legal action and where lapses were detected, the board would decide further action.

Meanwhile, NBOCWWB CEO, T. Chubayanger said the welfare board was constituted to register construction workers in the state and provide them social security by providing certain benefits. In order to provide these benefits, Chubayanger said the central government created the Building and Other Construction Workers (Regulation of Employment and Conditions of Service) Act, 1996. The CEO also informed they were trying to streamline payment of cess and renewal of registration through online process that was available on their official website, which would help create a public domain through their online portal. Later, commissioner & secretary (Finance), V. Kezo said all responsible departments should comply with the Act and should fully implement it. He said the board would be applying “a common yardstick for every department” and that it would try to work out a mechanism that would sensitise everyone about the Act.

Eye on 2023 assembly polls, BJP rejigs Tripura unit AGARTALA, MAY 13 (PTI): The ruling BJP in Tripura announced a rejig in the ranks of the party and its frontal organisations with an eye on the 2023 assembly elections. Senior tribal leader Bikash Debbarma was made the president of the party’s ST Morcha. He replaced MP Rebati Tripura. Rampada Jamatia was made the observer of the ST Morcha. The party also appointed 12 district observers and co-observers. It also appointed eight observers for the party’s frontal organisations such as Janajati Morcha, Mohila Morcha, OBC Morcha,

Yuva Morcha and Minority Morcha. “This is routine exercise to distribute work among the party leaders. Obviously, it’s being done keeping in mind the next year’s assembly elections,” BJP state president Manik Saha told PTI on Friday. On being removed as the president of the ST Morcha, Tripura said she wanted to focus more on the party’s organisation after being made the vicepresident. Saha said, “There is no question of removing any particular leader. The responsibilities keep changing for the betterment of the organisation.”

Varma’s son got into a brawl in an inebriated state and misbehaved with parliamentarians. The people of Tripura are ashamed of the Deputy Chief Minister’s son’s activities and it is absolutely appalling how he has behaved in front of the senior parliamentarians, Banerjee said in a statement. Bhowmik said that the state Police is numb on this incident and it looks like as he is the son of the Deputy Chief Minister, the law of the state is not applicable for him. “It is indeed a matter of extreme shame and disgrace for us. Such behaviour in a drunken state by the son of a senior minister is not only unexpected but absolutely unacceptable,” he said.

Mizoram records 50 new Covid cases, tally at 2,27,899 AIZAWL, MAY 13 (PTI): Mizoram on Friday reported 50 fresh COVID-19 cases, raising the tally to 2,27,899, a health department official said. The death toll stood at 697 as no new fatality was reported since May 3. The daily positivity rate stood at 14.24 per cent and the recovery rate at 99.59 per cent, he said. According to State Immunisation Officer Lalmuanawma Jongte, over 8.53 lakh people have been inoculated till Thursday.

Mukul Sangma leader in the state Assembly, Mukul Sangma and 11 others of the 17 Congress legislators in Meghalaya had joined the TMC. As a result, TMC became the principal opposition party in the northeastern state. However, even before six months have passed since then, the alleged reports of five TMC MLAs quitting the party have upset the party leadership, a TMC source said. “In fact, before his Guwahati visit on May 11, our National General Secretary was supposed to visit Meghalaya on May 3. However, at that point of time, the party leadership received reports that a number of party functionaries in Meghalaya have become defunct. A party diktat was sent to the Meghalaya leadership to set things in order before the National General Secretary’s next scheduled visit there,” the Trinamool source said.

He said that a crucial floor test will be conducted within 30 days after the appointment of a chairman by the governor as per the council rules. He said that the governor is likely to appoint a chairman by May 18. Vanlakhmuaka expressed hope that at least a member or two from other two parties - Mizo National Front (MNF) and Congress will join the BJP before the floor test. Meanwhile, the first sitting of the council was convened on Friday under the chairmanship of protem chairman K Hrahmo, a BJP member from Chakhei constituency, an official said.

schools concentrated in the Laitumkrah area, it said, adding that, however, a low level of response has been received to the proposal. It may do well for an official of the state government to persuade parents to avail the school buses for

their children, allaying their apprehensions as to security and delay, the court said. The court also asked the state government to explore whether staggering the inflow and outflow of students in each school and staggering their timings may ease the congestion. The ultimate relief in easing the traffic situation in Shillong may only come if alternative systems are put in place, the court said. During the hearing, the advocate general said that there is a recommendation by experts for the construction of ropeways for regular commuting, rather than restricted only for tourism. The advocate general also said that construction of the Western Bypass and other roads are underway.

Amid protests, Assam clears tea garden land for greenfield airport in Cachar SILCHAR, MAY 13 (PTI): The process of clearing a tea garden was underway in Assam’s Cachar district on Friday for setting up a greenfield airport amid protests. More than a hundred excavators were clearing the plantation of Doloo tea estate in Lalbagh division since Thursday, officials said. A huge contingent of police was deployed at the spot with the garden area cordoned off, they said. A flag march was conducted in the area before the land clearing process started, police said, adding that no untoward incident has so far been reported. The process of acquiring the land for the airport

project is being done as per the memorandum signed by the stakeholders concerned, Superintendent of Police Ramandeep Kaur said. “If any person or group has any grievance, then it should be addressed through proper channels and they should not create a law and order situation here,” she said. The tea garden workers have been protesting the acquisition, stating that they fear loss of livelihood. The state government has announced a compensation of Rs 50 crore for the acquisition of the land at Doloo and Mainagarh tea gardens and has already JCBs at the proposed site for greenfield airport. released Rs 2.37 crore as The Doloo tea garden ited Rs 1.57 crore in the the first installment, officials said it has already depos- workers’ Provident Fund said.

Ease traffic congestion in Shillong: HC to M’laya govt SHILLONG, MAY 13 (PTI): The Meghalaya High Court has directed the state government to draw plans for easing the traffic congestion in Shillong. Hearing a PIL, a bench comprising Chief Justice Sanjib Banerjee and Justice W Diengdoh said on Thursday that several suggestions have been given by the petitioners and it hopes that the state government considers those. “Though the matter has been pending for a considerable period of time and new ideas are bandied each time, there have to be long-term and short-term plans on a more detailed basis than what has been presented thus far,” the court said. “Funds may be a problem, but there are national

BJP’s Silchar MP Rajdeep Roy said, “I would like to reiterate that the government is committed to the welfare of the tea workers as well as the industry and we are looking forward to an early settlement to the grievances.” TMC’s Rajya Sabha MP Sushmita Dev claimed that the administration has completely mishandled the situation. “We want the airport but the way the land acquisition and eviction began, it is problematic. The administration is insensitive and we demand proper compensation and rehabilitation for

the workers,” she said. State Congress president Bhupen Bora accused Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma of not considering the plight of the workers but acting in the interest of a few industrialists. He demanded that the eviction drive be immediately stopped as it was “undemocratic and reflected the anti-labour policies of the government”. A memorandum of understanding (MoU) was signed in March between Doloo Tea Company Pvt Ltd and various trade unions to protect the jobs of the tea garden workers. Around 2,500 bighas of land will be provided by the tea estate for construction of the airport.

SHILLONG, MAY 13 (PTI): The Hill State People’s Democratic Party (HSPDP), an alliance partner in the Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA) government, has asked Chief Minister Conrad Sangma to keep in abeyance the implementation of the Meghalaya Regulation of Gaming Act, 2021 in the state. HSPDP chief KP Pangniang said the matter was raised on Thursday during the MDA coalition meeting where he had aired the views of his party in this regard. “As a party, we feel that unless and until we see the whole picture clause by clause of this act, it is better to keep the implementation of this act in abeyance,” Pangniang told PTI. “I on behalf of the party feel

that it is not appropriate to implement this act immediately in our state,” he said. Admitting that he has not read all the clauses of the act, the HSPDP chief said, “....to my understanding, if this gaming act is implemented in our state, it will affect the so called sentiment of the people since the majority of the citizen of the state are Christians, so we cannot deny the fact that gambling is one of the factor that we feel is not appropriate to encourage in our state.” After interacting with the Chief Minister, he said, “At the same time through the media report, we have seen that even casino will be put in place in our state but after the chief minister brief us the whole purpose of this Act.

SHILLONG, MAY 13 (PTI): Heavy rains lashed Meghalaya on Friday, causing landslides in different areas with most rivers flowing above the danger mark, officials said. The rains, which began on Thursday night, caused landslides in different parts of the state, leading to traffic disruptions, they said. Work is underway to clear the debris, they added. The heavy rains, caused by moisture incursion from the Bay of Bengal, will continue for the next 24 hours, the weather office said. People were advised to stay away from vulnerable areas that are prone to landslides, officials said. Mawsynram town in East Khasi Hills district recorded 483.2 mm of rainfall in the last 24 hours. Sohra received 104 mm rainfall, while Shillong and Mawkyrwat received 111.5 mm and 184 mm rainfall, respectively.

KO L K ATA , M AY 1 3 (IANS): As rumours float that five Trinamool Cong ress (TMC) MLAs in Meghalaya may join the United Democratic Party (UDP), the former’s National General Secretary Abhishek Banerjee has summoned Meghalaya party president Charles Pyngrope and TMC’s legislative party leader in the Meghalaya Assembly, Mukul Sangma to Kolkata. The rumours about the five TMC MLAs in Meghalaya have come as a major embarrassment for the party, specially after Abhishek Banerjee, at a public meeting in Guwahati on Wednesday had claimed that his party will form the government in Meghalaya within a year. The five MLAs rumoured to be quitting the TMC include Shitlang Pale, Jimmy D. Sangma, Himalaya Shangpliang, Marthon Sangma and Geroge B. Lyngdoh. Confirming this political development, a senior TMC leader requesting anonymity said although the date of the emergency meeting in Kolkata is yet to be finalised, it will be held in May. Sonia calls for urgent reforms at ‘Chintan Shivir’ SLAMS PM FOR ‘BRUTALISING MINORITIES’, KEEPING COUNTRY IN POLARISATION STATE

UDAIPUR, MAY 13 (PTI): Congress president Sonia Gandhi on Friday called for urgent reforms in the party as “extraordinary situations demand extraordinary action” and also launched a blistering attack on Prime Minister Narendra Modi accusing him of keeping the country in a state of permanent polarisation, “brutalising” minorities and “threatening” political opponents. Sending out a clear message to Congress ranks while launching the threeday brainstorming conclave, she said the party will have to change its style of functioning and urged them to keep the organisation above their personal ambitions and pay back their debt to the party as it had given a lot to everyone. She urged around 450 delegates to deliberate with an open mind but send out a single message of a strong organisation, resolve and unity. “In one way this (Congress transformation) is the most fundamental issue. Our revival is only possible through collective efforts. Such collective efforts will not be deferred. This Shivir is the start of the journey,”

NAGALAND POST, DIMAPUR SATURDAY, MAY 14, 2022

Sonia Gandhi addresses party leaders during the party’s ‘Nav Sankalp Chintan Shivir’, in Udaipur. (PTI)

Gandhi said. “The circumstances before our organisation are unprecedented. Extraordinary situations demand extraordinary action. I am fully alert to this. The organisation has to bring changes within itself, not just to stay alive but to move forward. We are in dire need of improvement and changing strategy,” she also said. She stressed that the Congress’s revival would only happen with grand collective efforts and those cannot be put off. Noting that this shivir in this journey is an important step, she noted, “We are not oblivious to the recent failures nor are we oblivious

to the struggle we have to undertake to win. We are not unaware of the expectations of the people.” The Congress president asserted that all have gathered to take a collective and individual resolve to bring the party in the same position it once had and play the role that people expected it to play in these “deteriorating circumstances”. Taking on the government, she said, it has become “painfully clear” what Modi and his colleagues really mean by their frequently-used slogan ‘maximum governance minimum government’. “It means keeping the country in a state of per-

manent polarisation, compelling people to live in a constant state of fear and insecurity. It means viciously targeting, victimising and often brutalising of minorities who are an integral part of our society and equal citizens of our republic,” she noted. “It means using our society’s age-old pluralities to divide us and subverting the carefully nurtured idea of unity and diversity. It means threatening and intimidating political opponents, maligning their reputation, jailing them on flimsy pretexts and misusing investigative agencies,” Gandhi said. She said it means eroding the independence and professionalism of all institutions of democracy. Gandhi also accused the BJP-led government of “wholesale reinvention of history”, constant denigration of its leaders, especially Jawaharlal Nehru and the systematic move to distort, deny and destroy their contributions, their achievements and their sacrifices. “It means glorifying the killers of Mahatma Gandhi,” the Congress chief said. She also accused the

Centre of “blatant undermining” of the principles the Constitution and its pillars of justice, liberty, equality, fraternity and secularism. Gandhi alleged that the government was turning a blind eye to continued atrocities across the country on weaker sections, especially Dalits, Adivasis and women. She also charged that the Centre was using fear to make the bureaucracy, corporate India, sections of the civil society and the media fall in line. She said diversionary tactics were being used and questioned the “utter silence” on the part of the “ever so eloquent prime minister when the healing touch is most needed”. Urging leaders to air their views frankly and openly during discussions at the three-day Chintan Shivir, she said, “I urge you to openly put forward your views, but only one message should go out and that is of a strong organisation, resolve and unity.” She said the meet is also an occasion to deliberate on the many challenges ahead of us and bring organisational changes.

Those travelling abroad can take precaution dose 3 months after 2nd jab

NEW DELHI, MAY 13 (PTI): Those travelling abroad for jobs, education and business purposes can take the precaution dose of COVID-19 vaccine anytime after three months from the second dose as required by the destination country, the Centre said on Friday, a day after it relaxed the stipulated nine-month waiting period for international travel. In a letter to states and union territories, the Centre said necessary provisions have been made on the Co-WIN portal to enable updation of the precaution dose so administered and citizens will not be required to upload documents such as visa. The Health Ministry received several requests for the early administration of precaution dose to those who need to undertake international travel for educational purpose, employment opportunities, participation in sports tournaments, attending bilateral and multilateral meetings as part of India’s official delegation, and business commitments, Additional Secretary in the ministry Manohar Agnani said. In this context, to facilitate international travel

for such genuine reasons, the necessary provision of early administration of precaution dose for these travellers has been done on the Co-WIN portal under the National COVID-19 Vaccination Programme, Agnani said in the guidelines shared by him. Based on the recommendations of experts, the competent authority has approved early administration of precaution dose as required by the destination country for these overseas travellers, subject to a minimum period of 90 days between the second dose and the precaution dose. “The necessary provisions for the same have been made on Co-WIN,” Agnani stated. “It is requested that the guidelines may be widely publicised to all government and private CVCs and for

general public and all necessary measures be taken immediately for the implementation of the same,” he said. Currently, healthcare workers, frontline workers and citizens aged 60 years and above who are fully vaccinated (with two doses) and have completed nine months (39 weeks) after the second dose are eligible to take the precaution dose at any of the government or private COVID-19 Vaccination Centres (CVCs). Citizens aged 18 years and more but less than 60 years are allowed to take the precaution dose only at private CVCs on a payment basis. It can be also availed at government CVCs in a few states, based on the respective state’s notification, the letter mentioned. The vaccine administered as a precaution dose is a homologous vaccine that is the same which has been administered as first and second doses. All technical protocols as prescribed in the guidelines regarding vaccination centres and adverse event following immunisation (AEFI) management will have to be followed, the guidelines added.

Shiv Sena, MNS, BJP slam AIMIM Population not sole criteria for J&K delimitation: CEC Chandra leader’s visit to Aurangzeb’s tomb

AURANGABAD, MAY 13 (IANS): A political row was ignited in Maharashtra after AIMIM leader Akbaruddin Owaisi paid homage at the tomb of Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb and later attacked state politicians, here on Friday. Referring to the ongoing ‘azan’ versus ‘Hanuman Chalisa’ controversy at a political meeting, without taking names, Owaisi targeted Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) President Raj Thackeray and urged his supporters to maintain restraint. “Dog will continue to bark. You keep quiet, ignore them. I am not going to abuse anyone. We

have a MP here and you people have been rendered homeless,” Owaisi said on Thursday. Owaisi was referring to the court-ordered demolition of around 340 illegal structures in the Labour Colony area of the city, and now the eligible homeless shall be rehabilitated under the Prime Minister Awas Yojana scheme in the same area to be renamed as ‘Vishwasnagar’. Taking strong umbrage at the oblique references, MNS’ leader Gajanan Kale demanded strong action from the Maharashtra government against Owaisi for praying at the Aurangzeb tomb. “If they don’t take

action, then we will do it... We shall dig his grave right beside Aurangzeb’s tomb,” warned Kale. One of the tourist circuit highlights of Aurangabad, Aurangzeb’s simple memorial is situated in Khuldabad, and Owaisi was accompanied by All India Majlis-E-Ittehadul Muslimeen MP from the city, Syed Imtiaz Jaleel and exMLA Waris Pathan among others. Jaleel wondered what the entire fracas was about as there are many dargahs of spiritual leaders in Khuldabad and all those who come there also visit the final resting place of Aurangzeb.

NEW DELHI, MAY 13 (PTI): Population was an important but not the sole criteria while carrying out the delimitation exercise in Jammu and Kashmir, Chief Election Commissioner Sushil Chandra said on Friday and asserted that the union territory has to be seen as “one unit” where the entire population has to be given representation in 90 assembly constituencies. Chandra, who was an ex-officio member of the delimitation panel which gave its final order on restructuring the assembly seats in Jammu and Kashmir earlier this month, also said there were “lots of problems” with the earlier delimitation and those have been corrected now.

He was responding to questions on criticism from certain quarters that going by the population ratio, Kashmir Division got a lesser number of seats as compared to Jammu. “Population is only one of the criteria of the delimitation. Besides population, there are four other criteria as per provisions of the Delimitation Act and the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation Act which say that consideration will also have to be given to the physical conditions, and communication facilities, public conveniences and the administrative units of that area. So these are four other criteria that have to be looked into. It (population) is one of the important cri-

TN minister takes a jibe at claims that ‘Hindi will fetch job’

COIMBATORE, MAY 13 (PTI): Tamil Nadu Higher Education Minister K Ponmudy on Friday asserted that the state government will continue with the two-language formula as its policy, and decried any attempts of alleged Hindi imposition and questioned claims that learning the language will fetch jobs. Taking a dig at those who insist jobs will be available for those who learn Hindi, the minister asked who are selling ‘pani puri’ in the city now, an obvious reference to the predominantly Hindi-speaking vendors involved in the trade. His comments came at the 37th convocation of Bharathiar University here, presided over by state Governor R N Ravi, also the varsity Chancellor, where the minister reiterated the ruling DMK’s stand against ‘imposition’ of Hindi, a claim which Ravi sought to dismiss by saying “there is no question of imposition of Hindi or any other language on anyone.” Ponmudy said he used the platform to highlight Tamil Nadu’s sentiments over the language issue as the Governor would convey them

K Ponmudy to the Centre. He recalled that English and Tamil have been in vogue in Tamil Nadu for long and that the same will continue while students were not against learning other languages, including Hindi. “Many said you will get jobs if you learn Hindi. Is it so...look here in Coimbatore, who is selling pani puri. It is them (Hindi-speaking individuals),” he said. “If a cat can go through a hole, can’t a rat,” he asked cryptically. Ponmudy said students of the state were ready to learn any language and that they were not against other languages including Hindi.

Noting that the state government was ready to adopt good schemes in the New Education Policy (NEP 2020), the minister said there should not be any imposition of Hindi and students can prefer any language as the third option, but the state will follow the system prevailing now. Alleging Hindi imposition through NEP 2020, the Tamil Nadu government has already said the two-language policy, comprising Tamil and English, will continue to remain in practice. “We don’t want to agitate against the good things in NEP. We are ready to follow them. But at the same time, in Tamil Nadu we should have our own language. India is a land of unity in diversity. In Tamil Nadu we should follow our own education system...we should follow certain good policies from the NEP,” Ponmudy added. There was a time when society barred education to women. However, the ‘Dravidian Model’ has created a system, where education was for all and women students outnumber their male counterparts in higher education, as this is social

reformer Periyar’s land, he said. Chief Minister M K Stalin has formed a committee to formulate an education policy and based on its recommendations a policy will formulated, he said. Ravi, in his address, denied Ponmudy’s claims of Hindi imposition and highlighted Tamil’s richness and wealth which he wanted to be spread across the country by enabling more people learn the language. “An impression is created by some people that the Central government is imposing a language on Tamil Nadu or anyone. I think that is far from the truth. That is not correct,” he said. In fact, the whole thrust of NEP was to do the learning and teaching in mother tongue, the regional language. In the recent conference of the Chief Justices and Chief Ministers, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had insisted and raised the issue-- to make the regional language the state language and that of the judiciary. “People who go to get to justice must get the justice in a language they understand,” Ravi said.

Chandra, who demits the office of CEC on Saturday, said Jammu and Kashmir should be seen as one unit. “It cannot be (seen) in different parts. It is one single union territory. The whole population will have to be given representation in 90 constituencies. The

(Kashmir) valley has been given less or Jammu (division) has been given less -- it is one whole unit comprising 20 districts and 207 tehsils. We will have to see it as one whole unit.” The Delimitation Commission on Jammu and Kashmir, formed in March 2020, notified its final report on May 5 giving six additional assembly seats to the Jammu region and one to Kashmir Valley and bringing areas of Rajouri and Poonch under the Anantnag

parliamentary seat. Jammu Division will now have 43 assembly seats and Kashmir 47 in the 90-member house. The changes will come into effect from the date to be notified by the central government. Earlier, the erstwhile assembly had 87 seats -- 46 in Kashmir, 37 in Jammu 37 and four in Ladakh. Ladakh, in the reorganisation of the erstwhile state, was declared as a union territory without an assembly.

Fresh ‘death threat’ to Pawar on Twitter; NCP complains to police

M U M B A I , M AY 1 3 (IANS): Maharashtra’s Maha Vikas Aghadi government went into a tizzy as Nationalist Congress Party President Sharad Pawar got what is perceived as a “death threat’ on social media. The NCP lodged a complaint with the Mumbai Police’s Cyber Cell on Friday. The camouflaged t h r e a t s o f M ay 1 1 i n Marathi, referring to the NCP supremo says: “The time has come for the ‘Gandhi’ of Baramati And for Baramati to prepare a Nathuram Godse.”

Sharad Pawar The tweet posted by @ NikhilBhamre8 also exhorts Pawar: “Baramati Uncle, apologise”, though the context in which the threats were issued is unclear, but it was liked and tweeted by

many in the past couple of days. Taking serious cognisance, NCP’s Housing Minister Dr. Jitendra Awhad lamented over the depths to which the situation has plummeted and asked the police to take strong action against the deranged person tweeting the threats. He also drew the attention of the Maharashtra Director General of Police, and Commissioners of Police of Mumbai, Thane, and Pune. Expressing concern, Shiv Sena Spokesperson Dr. Manisha Kayande said

there’s no need to guess which team is behind the threats to kill Pawar as “everyone knows who worships Godse”, and urged Home Minister Dilip Walse-Patil to take serious note. “This is a clear threat to murder and shows their ideological levels. Those issuing it must be dealt with most severely. In the past, Dr. Narendra Dabholkar, Prof. M.M. Kalburgi and Govind Pansare were assassinated by these very likeminded elements,” she said. Congress state General Secretary Sachin Sawant said its time for people to

reflect “where the efforts of the Bharatiya Janata Party and the Sangh Parivar to make the society violent and pervert, have pushed the country”. “Hatred and contempt are making the young people of today the future killers and I urge the government to act stringently against these perverts,” he said. Sena MoS Kishore Tiwari said that exactly a month ago, a violent attack was carried out on the home of Pawar (April 8) by the hostile forces and sections of the police who are still loyal to the BJP.

OPINION/EDITORIAL

Nagaland Post VOL. XXXII NO. 157 DIMAPUR, SATURDAY, MAY 14, 2022

‘Religious freedom’ interpreted

O

n May 12,2022 Karnataka became the 10th state in India to implement an anti-conversion statute after the state cabinet promulgated the Karnataka Protection of Right to Freedom of Religion Bill,2021. The Karnataka Protection of Right to Freedom of Religion Bill was passed in the Legislative Assembly in December last year. It is pending passage in the Legislative Council, where the ruling BJP is one short of majority. The almost simultaneous impetus to these laws in various states does not augur well for the religious minorities, who are already suffering the onslaught of rightwing ascendancy in the political sphere. Prior to the Karnataka Bill, there have been state-level “freedom of religion” statutes, known as anti-conversion laws, in nine states – Uttar Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh, Gujarat, Chhattisgarh, Odisha, Madhya Pradesh, Arunachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand and Jharkhand. Odisha was the first state to enact such a law in 1967, followed by Madhya Pradesh in 1968. In the heightened anti-minority environment, there may be other states waiting to follow suit. The innocuous sounding “Right to Freedom of Religion Bill”is anything but such. This bill like all other similar sounding bills, is clearly meant to prevent conversions from Hinduism to any other religion, in particular, to Christianity. Any Hindu who seeks to become a Christian has to face far too many hurdles and harassment from authorities. If he or she crosses the hurdles, the Christian missionary or evangelist who was instrumental, becomes the target. Hypocritically, on the other hand, ‘re-conversion’ from Christianity is permitted as the anti-conversion laws do not speak on the use of fraudulent means, coercion or allurement to achieve ‘re-conversion’ of either Christians, Muslims, animists or pagans to Hinduism. Bajrang Dal and VHP have “reconverted “several hundred Christian Dalits to Hinduism under the ‘Ghar Wapsi”(homecoming) programmes. The rise of muscular Hindutva means anyone not with it, is anti-national. As the political arm of the RSS, the BJP has been pushing for the ‘anticonversion law’ in states ruled by it. Even Venkaiah Naidu when he was BJP president, had strongly advocated for enactment of anti-conversion laws. There is no central anti-conversion law. This could eventually happen after 2024. While several States have laws that criminalise conversion on the basis of force, fraud or inducement/allurement, the trend has been to include ‘marriage’ as an illegal means of conversion. This is included in the Karnataka religion bill that has made ‘a promise of marriage’ a means of unlawful conversion. It is needless to say that the idea of presuming that a conversion has or is about to take place alongside an inter-faith marriage is patently unconstitutional as it interferes with the right to privacy, marital freedom and freedom of belief. Noted Supreme Court advocate Sanjay Hegde had said that “these laws try to control women, rather than marriage, and assume that the women don’t have any agency of their own”. After BJP won 12 seats in the 2018 polls in Nagaland, the highest among Christian majority states such as Meghalaya(1 seat) and Mizoram(nil), it took Nagaland as example that Naga Christians accept the BJP and its ideology. Not only state BJP but the UDA have to voice out concerns about anti-religious minority acts blatantly taking place. When politics intrude into the realm of religion, it does no good to the country and worse for that particular religion which is being propagated. Religion then becomes the real enemy of religion and the combination of politics and religion only gives birth to communalism, totalitarian extremism, religious terrorism etc.

DailyDevotion The Habit of Keeping a Clear Conscience

…strive to have a conscience without offense toward God and men. —Acts 24:16 God’s commands to us are actually given to the life of His Son in us. Consequently, to our human nature in which God’s Son has been formed (see Galatians 4:19), His commands are difficult. But they become divinely easy once we obey. Conscience is that ability within me that attaches itself to the highest standard I know, and then continually reminds me of what that standard demands that I do. It is the eye of the soul which looks out either toward God or toward what we regard as the highest standard. This explains why conscience is different in different people. If I am in the habit of continually holding God’s standard in front of me, my conscience will always direct me to God’s perfect law and indicate what I should do. The question is, will I obey? I have to make an effort to keep my conscience so sensitive that I can live without any offense toward anyone. I should be living in such perfect harmony with God’s Son that the spirit of my mind is being renewed through every circumstance of life, and that I may be able to quickly “prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God” (Romans 12:2 ; also see Ephesians 4:23). God always instructs us down to the last detail. Is my ear sensitive enough to hear even the softest whisper of the Spirit, so that I know what I should do? “Do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God…” (Ephesians 4:30). He does not speak with a voice like thunder— His voice is so gentle that it is easy for us to ignore. And the only thing that keeps our conscience sensitive to Him is the habit of being open to God on the inside. When you begin to debate, stop immediately. Don’t ask, “Why can’t I do this?” You are on the wrong track. There is no debating possible once your conscience speaks. Whatever it is— drop it, and see that you keep your inner vision clear.

Post-mortem

Shrinking middle classes and its impact & a call for free and fair election

E

ssentially Upper elite class and lower class make up human society. Middle class contribution is the doorway to robust economy and they are the source of economic growth. Strong middle class provides a stable consumer base that drivesproductive investment. A key player and a major factor in encouraging other national and societal conditions that bring higher economic growth. A robust middle class plays a crucial role for successful economy and cohesive society. They sustain consumption, drives much of the investment in education, healthand housing and plays a vital role in supporting social protection system through their tax contribution. They create a stable source of demand for goods and services and incubates the next generation of entrepreneurs. It also supports inclusive political and economic institutions underpinning economic growth. Today, the middle class is almost on the verge of extinction and this is one reason for having less economic growth and thus a vacuum is created. The lower class begins to suffer due to the decline in the percentage of middle class in our state. We now seem tohave only the upper and lower class. Corruption has hampered the growth and prosperity level of the middle class and the escalating cost of education, health care and housing has only added to their ever growing miseries and Covid

pandemic is another factor that further contributed to the deteriorating condition of the middle class. We are aware of the fact that disposal income for them have not yet been moved or grown a bit while income for the elite upper class are hitting astronomical increase. It stands stagnant today. India’s middle class is recorded to have shrunk by 32 million in2020 as a consequence of the downturn, compared with the number it may have reached had there been no pandemic. It is important to understand that a strong and sustainable economy of the state needs a strong middle class. It is a shame that they have not been allowed to grow. As a result of increasing income inequality they have begun to shrink. Some household have fallen into poverty, others to affluence. Large section of the population depends on the middle class for survival and in the absence of them the poor have become poorer and rich got richer. A stagnant middle class or absence of strong middle class means a weak state economy. Nagaland is in danger of falling into a vacuum trap where lower class cannot make it to a bare minimum of survival as the middle class shrinks. The disparity is by any measure set to get wider between the rich and the poor. I agree with one article which states “while a wealth tax may not be the best solution, an effective income

distribution system need to be implemented to support the shrinking middle class group. Greater emphasis on manufacturing, advance farming techniques and ease of doing “small and micro” business which directly employs a large percent of total population will help in growth revival”. As many intellect says, beyond the political aspect, it is well established that economic growth is stronger in any countries or state that has a strong middle class. The shrinkage of middle class is worrisome, according to some eminent scholars who hold the opinion that among the middle class households there is now a growing discontent with the economic conditions. In this context, the stagnation of the middle class living standards has resulted in the emergence of new forms of nationalism, isolationism, populism, protectionism and anti- government sentiments. It is likely to produce disillusionment and damage political engagement or turns voters towards anti —establishment and protectionist policies as observed by various political scholars. Political instability is an important channel through which the squeezed middle class may upset economic investment and growth according to 2019 OECD book titled “ under pressure: squeezed middle class”. Middle class may have been squeezed to grow as economically strong middle class is more likely to hold

a government accountable which would in turn ensure the rule of law, protection and property rights and demands continued economic reforms according to sociopolitical analyst. In the absence of strong middle class in any society there is no challenger to raise concern about government anti-poo, anti-people legislation. What I am trying to address here is simple. Allow the middle class to grow. There should not be any fear of the middle class rising above the ruling elites. They will only help the state economy to grow and provide jobs in large numbers. For without a strong middle class there is that danger of disconnect with those surviving on a mere single meal a day. To help the under privileged I strongly advocate that government should encourage upcoming entrepreneurs who are job providers by giving all possible help including bank loans for workable projects. Adding to what is being said above, I wish to highlight one pressing need the youth of Nagaland so deserves and are longing for. We have a whole lot of national and upcoming political parties in our state. Should we not occupy a space to exhibit our worth? Why not push them up and see a different breed of governance. It is time to givea whole new meaning to state electoral system and governance by trying to occupy space in political arena for visible changes. I

would encourage us all to really get directly involved. I believe leaders can work together to bring drastic change in the system of governance that will benefit the unloved and unreached. Young leaders can do a whole lot of good. Our people need healing, getting their trust is your priority both in words and actions. Reaching out the people with Sincerity, Genuineness, Pro- people attitude, being sensible to their needs and demands can help erase the mistrust on politicians which in turn will cut the trust deficits. Do believe in something and not to work on it is our drawback. Take the opportunity to spread positive impact of free and fair election. The speed of development in grand scale can only be possible only when elections is held without the power of money. There is really no satisfaction and true happiness in winning through the power of money. What good is a government if it is brought down by another coalition after spending crores of rupees or to sit down as mere MLA? Essentially, I am trying to reach out to the young generation, young political parties and young voters with a message, that if your representative is elected through money power, I would not hesitate a moment to say expect no development in your respective areas. Expect no jobs as you all have sold yourself. We are committing a big blun-

der by indulging in the first stage of corruption. When we all call our leaders corrupt we are no less a saint. It is us who sow the seeds of corruption in the first place by selling yourself/ ourselves. But this does not mean I am encouraging the elected leaders to go on a rampant corruption spree for recovering the amount spent during the period of electoral process. I am just trying to place before us a mirror to see our own past and present misadventures of buying and selling votes. I have witnessed many who give free votes. And it is disheartening that those honest individuals are either forgotten or unidentified. In the midst of corruption at all levels, I am comforted by the fact that there still exist God fearing men and women who have never indulged themselves in selling their single but precious votes in exchange of earthly comforts. Now that I have penned my thoughts on the shrinking middle class and its negative impacts I, would like to sum it by fervently urging the visionary young generation having political ambitions to come together and also the new political parties for concerted effort to arrive at some kind of meeting point to build a new vibrant Nagaland. I am looking forward for some positive response and ch !es o’ the political Vanthungo Odyuo President NCP, Nagaland.

Light pollution: The importance of this year’s theme

W

orld Migratory Bird Day is an annual awarenessraising campaign highlighting the need for the conservation of migratory birds and their habitats. It has a global outreach and is an effective tool to help raise global awareness of the threats faced by migratory birds, their ecological importance, and the need for international cooperation to conserve them. The day seeks to raise awareness about migratory birds. Migratory birds are those who migrate to different regions either to avoid harsh weather or to breed. This migration is not only important for their survival, but it is also important for our society. Migratory birds are responsible for spreading seeds, pollinating flowers, and acting as pest control. This day aims to educate us about the threats migratory birds face as well as the importance of protecting them. World Migratory Bird Day was started in 2006 as part of a collaboration between the Conservations of African-Eurasian Migratory Waterbirds (AEWA) and the Species of Wild Animals (CMS). In the US and Canada, it is observed annually on the second Saturday in May. In the Southern Hemisphere, it is typically observed on the 2nd Saturday of October to better coincide with the migratory bird seasons there. In other words, birds are nature’s ambassadors. So, it becomes imperative to restore the ecological connectivity and integrity to boost the natural movements of the migratory birds. These are important to ensure migratory birds’ survival and well-being. As a part of this endeavor, every year bird

walks, nature-based festivals, bird-watching excursions, bird festivals, education programmes, and exhibitions are conducted to drive home the knowledge about migratory bird protection. These educational programs talk about bird biology, their nesting habitats, how to identify them, and reveal the fascinating mysteries of migration. Light Pollution will be the focus of the World Migratory Bird Day 2022 campaign. Artificial light is increasing globally by at least 2 per cent per year and it is known to adversely affect many bird species. Light pollution is a significant threat to migratory birds, causing disorientation when they fly at night, leading to collisions with buildings, perturbing their internal clocks, or interfering with their ability to undertake long-distance migrations. Solutions to light pollution are readily available. For instance, more and more cities in the world are taking measures to dim building lights during migration phases in spring and autumn. Best practice guidelines are also being developed under the Convention on Migratory Species to address this growing issue and ensure that action is taken globally to help birds migrate safely. Patna HC directs DGP to produce Sahara chief Subrata

PATNA, MAY 13 (PTI): The Patna High Court on Friday directed the DGP Bihar to produce Sahara chief Subrata Roy physically before the court at 10.30 am on May 16 and asked the UP Police chief and the Delhi police commissioner to cooperate in the matter. The bench of Justice Sandeep Kumar, while hearing several anticipatory bail applications filed in cheating cases committed by nonbanking finance companies, issued the order after Roy failed to turn up despite the court’s instruction for his physical appearance. Roy was expected to appear before the court on Thursday to explain how he would return crores of

rupees of investors from Bihar. Over 2,000 cases of investors, including lawyers, have been filed in the Patna High Court for return of matured amount accruing from deposits by small investors. HC in its order said, “It seems that Subrata Roy has no respect for the orders of this Court and he thinks that he is above this Court”.

put under house arrest as the fact that Kashmiri Muslims and Pandits empathise with each other’s pain doesn’t fit into their vicious communal narrative,” the PDP chief said. Police officials, however, refused to comment over Mufti’s claim. Later, in a video message, Mufti said the situation in Kashmir was getting from bad to worse. She also urged the majority community in the valley to stand by the minorities. “While the central government is playing a game of pitting Hindus against Muslims to hide its failures and presenting them as the biggest enemies of each other, Jammu and Kashmir is the only state where Hindus, Muslims, Sikhs, Christians and Buddhists are living together as one,” Mufti said.

NEW DELHI, MAY 13 (PTI): The Supreme Court on Friday sought a response from the Centre, Jammu, and Kashmir administration, and Election Commission of India (ECI) on a plea of two Kashmir residents challenging the government’s decision to constitute the delimitation commission for redrawing the assembly and Lok Sabha constituencies in the Union Territory. A bench of Justices Sanjay Kishan Kaul and MM Sundresh issued notice to the Centre and Election Commission of India and sought their responses within six weeks and said that the rejoinder affidavit shall be filed in two weeks thereafter. At the outset, counsel appearing for two Srinagar residents Haji Ab-

dul Gani Khan and Dr. Mohammad Ayub Mattoo, said that contrary to the scheme of the constitution, this delimitation exercise was carried out and alteration of boundaries and inclusion of extended areas could not be done. The bench said that the delimitation commission was formed sometime back and asked the petitioners, where were they during that time and why did not they challenge the constitution of the commission. The counsel said that as per the delimitation order, it is the election commission that is empowered to do any changes. The bench said that it is asking a specific question under Article 32 of the constitution why you have not challenged the formation of

types of delimitations. One is geography which is conducted by the delimitation commission and the second is by election commission with regard to reservation of seats”, he said. Mehta said that the petitioners’ case is that once Article 370 is gone, the census will only take place in 2026. The bench then noted that the petitioners have not challenged the abrogation of Article 370 of the Constitution and therefore pleadings concerning Article 370 are to be ignored. It said that the challenge is about the delimitation pursuant to the notifications of March 6, 2020, and March 3, 2021, and directed the Centre and ECI to file their replies.

The bench told the counsel, who was making objectionable submissions, to choose his words properly and said that Kashmir was always part of India and just a special provision was removed. SRINAGAR, MAY 13 (PTI): The Jammu and Kashmir Police on Friday resorted to baton charge and firing of tear gas shells to disperse Kashmiri Pandit community members marching towards Srinagar airport to protest the killing of Rahut Bhat by terrorists in Budgam a day back, officials said. The protesters first assembled at the Sheikhpora area of Budgam district, in central Kashmir, and then tried to proceed towards the airport but were stopped by a posse of police personnel, they said. They were requested to disperse but they refused to budge and insisted on marching ahead, following which the police used batons and fired some tear smoke shells, the officials said. B H O PA L , M A Y 1 3 (IANS): Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan on Friday hailed Prime Minister Narendra Modi and called him a “man of ideas”. Speaking at the launch of the first-ever technical training programme for rural tribals in Bhopal, Chouhan said, “Prime Minister Naredra Modi is a man of ideas. Fortunately, this country has a visionary prime minister. He has not only visions, but also ideas to execute them on ground.” Chouhan said the state needs around two lakh skilled youth for 51,000 villages in the state. The Madhya Pradesh government has started technical training programmes for tribal youths on an experimental basis. Chouhan pointed out that on one hand, people are migrating from the rural areas and on the other hand, there is a shortage of skilled hands in the villages. “This deficit can be fulfilled by only making the people in rural areas skillful,” he said. “There is a bike in every home in villages. Who would repair them? Every field has electric pumps. Who will rewind them if they get burnt? Numerous mechanical equipment are used in farming. Who will keep them in working order?” Chouhan said.

NEW DELHI, MAY 13 (PTI): The Supreme Court on Friday refused to postpone the NEET-PG-22 examination on a plea of doctors, saying the delay would seriously affect patient care and would create “chaos and uncertainty”. A bench of Justices DY Chandrachud and Surya Kant said the postponement of the examination would create “chaos and uncertainty” and would affect the larger section of students, who have registered for the examination. The top court said, “Over two lakh students have registered for the ensuing examination and their schedule will be seriously affected if a further postponement is granted under the direction of this court which will result in chaos and uncertainty”. It said, “These are mat-

Family Welfare to adhere to the time schedule must be accepted. The bench said that while considering the rival submissions, it must be noted at the outset, that the academic session has already been delayed by a period of four months, in terms of the schedule which has been prescribed by this court by order dated January 18, 2016. It said that the schedule was revised due to the exigencies caused by the impact of the pandemic during 2020-21. It noted that the petitioners as well as similarly placed doctors who have participated in the counselling process of NEETPG-2021 were not barred from registering for NEETPG-22. “The registration for the NEET-PG-22 have been closed on March 25, 2022, and as many two lakh, six thousand five hundred fortyone doctors have registered for the ensuing examination”, it noted.

Hence in our considered view, the relief which has been sought in these proceedings cannot be granted. The petition is accordingly dismissed”, the bench said. The top court said an important consideration that has weighed with the court not to postpone the NEET-PG-22 examination is that any delay in conducting the examination would lead to a fewer number of

resident doctors in hospitals. It said that this year only two batches are currently available because of the delay in holding the examination resulting in a serious deficiency in the required strength of doctors in hospitals. “In this backdrop, while the request which has been made by the petitioner for further postponement of the examination weighed from their perspective seems innocuous, cannot be entertained for the reason that it will seriously impact upon the availability of patient care and qualified Post Graduate doctors and likely to have a cascading effect in terms of the patient care as well as the careers of doctors who have already registered in large number for the ensuing examination”, it said. It said that as the country gets back on the rail after the dislocation which was caused due to the COVID-19 pandemic, it is necessary that the decision which has been taken by the Union Ministry of Health and

At the interbank forex market, the rupee opened at 77.35 against the greenback and moved in a range of 77.26 to 77.55 in the day’s trade. mara Dissanayake said the decision taken by President Gotabaya Rajapaksa to appoint Wickremesinghe as Prime Minister, is one that was made with zero regard to the voice of the people. The JVP leader ridiculed the decision, saying the appointment has no legitimacy and has no democratic value. “Wickremesinghe is a person who held the post of Prime Minister, formed governments, and yet could not even win a single seat at the last General Election. He did not even have the required number of votes to enter parliament. If an election is used to measure the consent of the people, elections have shown that

he has no mandate, and that is why the people sent him packing,” he said. The interim government idea was mooted by the powerful Buddhist clergy and civil society as a means to find a solution for the ongoing economic crisis. With Mahinda Rajapaksa’s resignation on Monday, President Gotabaya Rajapaksa said he was talking to political parties to set up an interim government. Wickremesinghe, who had been sworn in as the prime minister of Sri Lanka on five occasions before, said his primary task was to tackle the worst economic crisis with assistance from all parties.

The killing occurred in the early days of the war, when Russian tanks advancing on Kyiv were unexpectedly routed and tank crew retreated. Shyshimarin, a member of a tank unit that was

captured by Ukrainian forces, admitted that he shot the civilian in a video posted by the Security Service of Ukraine. “I was ordered to shoot,” said Shyshimarin, of the killing on Feb. 28. “I shot one (round) at him. He falls. And we kept on going.” Shyshimarin’s video statement is “one of the first confessions of the enemy invaders,” according to the Ukrainian security service. The trial comes as Russia’s campaign to take Ukraine’s east slowly grinds on — but its invasion has resulted in widespread repercussions beyond the battlefield. “If not for that, we would not have known about this until someone would have found any sign or received reports from people that their loved ones are missing,” Castrodad said. “They found them early enough that we were able to coordinate a response.” The boat was spotted more than 11 miles (18 kilometres) north of the uninhabited island of Desecheo, which is off Puerto Rico’s west coast. The US Coast Guard said those rescued were 20 men and 11 women. The capsizing comes less than a week after the US Coast Guard and Dominican navy on Saturday rescued 68 migrants in the Mona Passage, a treacherous area between Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic.

OCCUPIED EAST JERUSALEM, MAY 13 (AGENCIES): Israeli forces forcibly prevented a funeral march for Shireen Abu Akleh, the Al Jazeera journalist who was killed by Israeli forces this week while reporting in the occupied West Bank, by attacking mourners carrying her casket outside of a hospital in her hometown of Jerusalem, reports Al Jazeera. Israeli forces hit mourners holding the casket with batons, almost causing it to drop, before eventually allowing it to be moved in a hearse. Friday’s events were expected to begin with a procession from the St Louis French Hospital in occupied East Jerusalem’s Sheikh Jarrah neighbourhood, where Abu Akleh’s body remained overnight, to the Jaffa Gate in Jerusalem’s Old City, where a funeral service is being held at the Cathedral of the Annunciation of the Virgin. Abu Akleh, who was killed at the age of 51, will then be buried next to her parents at the nearby Mount Zion Protestant Cemetery. Israeli police closed roads leading to the hospital in Sheikh Jarrah at noon on Friday, as Palestinians began to gather ahead of the procession. Earlier on Friday, police also attempted to prevent Palestinians from placing posters of Abu Akleh outside the church. Thousands are expected to turn out for the funeral of the veteran reporter,

Israeli police raided Abu Akleh’s family home on Thursday, forcibly removing the Palestinian flag from the residence. Anton Abu Akleh, Shireen’s brother, was also summoned by Israeli police on Thursday evening. According to Israeli media reports, police warned him they would disperse the funeral proceedings if there was an “escalation”. Separately on Friday, Israeli forces conducted a raid at dawn in Jenin, injuring at least 13 Palestinians, including two in difficult condition, according to the Palestinian health ministry. Local media said Israeli forces shelled parts of

The Israeli army said one of its ‘Yamam’ special unit soldiers has been seriously injured during armed confrontations with Palestinian fighters. Three-day funeral procession Abu Akleh’s killing has sent shockwaves throughout the Arab world and led to an outpouring of emotion across the West Bank and Gaza. The reporter was honoured in several Palestinian cities – from Jenin in the northern West Bank, where she was killed on Wednesday, to Jerusalem, in a lengthy procession. Al Jazeera’s Palestine bureau chief, Walid al-Omari, described Abu Akleh’s three-day funeral procession as “one of the longest in Palestinian history”.

O

scar-winning music composer A.R. Rahman, who was in the news for his spirited responses to Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s stand that Hindi should replace English as the link language between different linguistic groups, emphasised the importance of English at an event here on Thursday. English, he said, is a global language and helps break barriers. He was speaking at the unveiling of the second season of Nexa Music, which identifies emerging talent in English music. When asked if he would like to come up with a similar talent sourcing and identification series like Nexa Music in India’s regional languages, the composer gave a categorical response. “The movie industry is doing great with music in Indian languages,” said the man who has been hailed as the ‘Mozart of Madras’. “This initiative is focused on making our artistes global so that they

can compete for Grammys and be on international platforms.” The world of music is “out of ideas,” the maestro said. “The rest of the world is waiting for India in terms of music,” he added. On an altogether different but heartfelt note, Rahman said that sometimes pressure extracts the best out of people. As he put it: “It’s good to put people on the edge, it gives amazing results.” Earlier, during the language controversy, the composer had shared a post about ‘Beloved Tamil’ along with an illustration of ‘Thamizhanangu’ of ‘Goddess Tamil’, which is a word from the Tamil anthem penned by Manonmaniam Sundaram Pillai. The anthem includes a line penned by Bharathidasan, a Tamil poet of the 20th century, in ‘Thamilyakkam’, an anthology of Tamil poetry. The line reads: “Beloved Tamil is the root of our existence.” (IANS)

‘The Sopranos’ actor Bruce MacVittie has died, aged 65

A

ctor Bruce MacVittie, known for roles in The Sopranos and Law & Order, has died aged 65. The actor passed away in a Manhattan hospital on Saturday (May 7), as confirmed by his wife Carol Ochs to The New York Times. A cause of death has not yet been determined. MacVittie is perhaps best known for playing juror Danny Scalercio in the fourth season of HBO series The Sopranos. From 1991, he also had numerous roles in the Law & Order franchise, including spin-offs Law & Order: Criminal Intent and Law & Order: Special Victims Unit. He made his Broadway debut in 1983 opposite Al Pacino in a production of David Mamet’s American Buffalo, a role he continued

in London’s West End. He went on to have numerous guest roles in television, including Barney Miller, Miami Vice, The Equalizer, Sex And The City, Oz, The Stand, The Street, and Spenser: For Hire. After taking a break from acting in 2011 to train as a nurse, MacVittie returned to the profession with roles in Blue Bloods, Chicago Med, The Deuce and acclaimed Netflix series When They See Us,

where he played Detective Hartigan. Paying tribute in The New York Times, Pacino wrote: “I loved Bruce MacVittie. His performances were always glistening and crackling; a heart and a joy to watch. He was the embodiment of the struggling actor in New York City, and he made it work. We will miss him.” Vincent D’Onofrio also paid tribute on Twitter, writing: “Bruce MacVittie and I worked together many times over the years. He was an amazing and unique actor. Always a pleasure to work with and this is very sad news to hear. He will be missed.” He’s survived by his wife Carol and their daughter, Sophia Oliva Ochs MacVittie. (NME)

Brain Supplements That Do and Don’t Work

drink green tea: It naturally contains both L-theanine and caffeine, as well as antioxidants that may help your mental and physical well-being in other ways. Omega-3s The traditional Mediterranean diet, which includes omega 3-rich-fish, is linked to a lower risk of dementia. But can omega-3 supplements help? So far, large studies (including one sponsored by the National Institutes of Health) haven’t proved that. One possible exception: People with the APOE4 gene mutation, which is tied to Alzheimer’s, might benefit if they start taking the supplements early enough, a 2017 review shows. Vitamin E This antioxidant combats free radicals, including those that may damage brain cells. But large studies aimed at finding out whether vitamin E supplements can protect against dementia haven’t yielded great results, though at least one study found that they might slow the worsening of Alzheimer’s in people who already have it. For now, experts say most healthy people should stick with food sources like nuts, seeds, and vegetable oils. Ginkgo Biloba Although it’s a staple in traditional Chinese medicine, modern research has found that ginkgo supplements probably won’t protect your memory. Although some studies have suggested there might be benefits, the most well-designed trials -- notably the Ginkgo Evaluation Memory study that included 3,000 older adults -- showed that ginkgo doesn’t prevent or slow dementia. Ginseng Often used along with ginkgo, ginseng is another popular supplement that hails from Asia. As with ginkgo, some studies have suggested that ginseng might be a potent brain booster. But the evidence didn’t hold up when scientists homed in on the best-quality research: A review of several trials concluded there’s

Food First While certain supplements might help in some cases, most healthy people don’t need pills to stay sharp. Eating a diet that’s rich in vegetables, berries, whole grains, and fish (key parts of the so-called MIND diet) is a way to support brain health as you age. Staying physically active, getting enough sleep, taking care of any medical conditions you have, keeping up your social connections, and challenging your mind by being a life-long learner can make a big difference, too. And it’s good for the rest of your body!

“no convincing evidence” that ginseng will protect your mental skills. Curcumin Found in turmeric (an ingredient in curry powder), curcumin has been hailed for its antioxidant powers. Does it help explain why Alzheimer’s rates are lower in India? A UCLA study found that people who took curcumin fared better on memory tests and had less buildup of abnormal proteins in their brains. But this study only included 40 people, and other research hasn’t found this result, so more studies are needed. CDP-choline In Europe, CDP-choline isn’t sold as a dietary supplement. Instead, it’s a prescription drug. According to researchers who reviewed 14 studies, there’s decent evidence that it can benefit memory in elderly people who already have memory problems. But whether it can prevent them in healthy people isn’t clear. Ask your doctor if you’re thinking of trying it. What About Combos? Many memory supplements aren’t sold as single ingredients. Though some ingredients might work well together, combined supplements are harder to study and could be risky. Supplements may cause side effects, and the risk rises with the number you take. Mixing them with prescription drugs can be risky, too. Review all the drugs and supplements you’re taking (or considering) with your doctor or pharmacist, so they can tell you what’s safe.

Do these products work? It’s often unclear, as the FDA doesn’t require makers to prove the supplements are effective, as long they don’t make any claims about specific diseases. Here’s what experts do -- and don’t -- know about some of these popular items. B Vitamins B vitamins like B6, B12, and B9 (folic acid) all play a role in brain health. But unless you’re low on them or pregnant (folic acid is a must to prevent birth defects), a supplement is unlikely to help. If you’re at high risk for Alzheimer’s, ask your doctor. The research into the use of vitamin B supplements to boost cognitive ability is inconclusive. You should stick with food sources like leafy greens to stay sharp. Caffeine Caffeine pills and powders aren’t a good idea, because of the risks if you overdose. But you can enjoy coffee guilt-free, as long as it doesn’t worsen your sleep or make you jittery. Some might be good for your brain. It’s a stimulant that helps perk you up, plus it promotes energy by blocking brain receptors for a chemical called adenosine. L-theanine A natural amino acid, L-theanine seems to have potential for improving mental performance, especially when combined with caffeine. That said, most studies have been small, such as one in 2019 that included 30 people. Until there’s more research, a safe bet is to

Rob Holding sent off for a second yellow card 10 minutes later, both for clumsy fouls on Son Heung-min. Kane’s diving header made it 2-0 in the 37th minute to send Tottenham’s fans into delirium. Tottenham could even have won by more yet despite the celebrations from the home fans they remain

With so much riding on the derby and the atmosphere electric, the opening exchanges were unsurprisingly frenetic with neither side able to settle into any kind of rhythm. But that all changed when Dejan Kulusevski directed a cross towards Son and he fell under challenge from Cedric Soares and referee Paul Tierney pointed to the spot. There was only going to be one winner as Kane stepped up to plant his spot kick low into the corner.

Benzema equals Raul as Real’s second-highest goal scorer

MADRID, MAY 13 (AP): Karim Benzema continues to add his name to Real Madrid’s record books, scoring his 323rd goal on Thursday to draw level with Raul Gonzalez as the club’s second-highest scorer behind Cristiano Ronaldo. Benzema netted in the first half of the team’s 6-0 rout of last-place Levante in the Spanish league, with Madrid having secured the title a few rounds ago. The result sealed Levante’s relegation after five consecutive years in the first division. Vinicius Junior, Benzema’s trusted attacking partner all season, scored a hattrick for Madrid as they continue to prepare for the Champions League final against Liverpool in Paris on May 28, when they will try to win a record-extending 14th European title. Benzema is now 128 goals shy of the 451 scored by Ronaldo, who played at the club until 2018. Raul, the coach of Madrid’s “B” squad, played for the club in the 1990s and 2000s.

Karim Benzema celebrates after scoring a goal.

B e n z e m a ’s c l o s e range header in the 19th minute off a cross by Vinicius gave the French striker his league-leading 27th goal, which is nine better than any other player in the competition this season. He has scored more than a third of Madrid’s 79 league goals so far. It was the 20th goal in the last 15 matches in all competitions for Benzema, who has been key in the team’s run to the Champions League final, scoring decisive goals in

every knockout round of the European tournament — including two hat tricks. He could have added another goal on Thursday but unselfishly fed Vinícius the ball for the team’s fifth after clearing the goalkeeper inside the area. “The connection with Benzema has been very good all season long,” said Vinícius, who now is the league’s third-best scorer with 17 goals. “Karim has had a great season and hopefully he can finish it by winning the Ballon d’Or (award for best player).”

Things soon got even worse for Arsenal as Son’s corner was met by Rodrigo Bentancur whose header was diverted in by a diving Kane at the far post. Eddie Nketiah nearly gave Arsenal a lifeline before halftime when his curled effort forced Hugo Lloris to tip over. But Arsenal could not cope with Son and Kane. The second half had barely begun when Kane tried to wriggle through and the ball broke for Son to calmly find the corner. Ramsdale made a superb save to keep out Emerson Royal’s header and Son missed an open goal before being substituted to a rapturous ovation from the Tottenham fans. Martin Odegaard forced Lloris into a fine save late on but by that time most of the Arsenal fans had seen enough and were on their way home.

and tie up their series at 3-3. The decisive game seven will take place in Phoenix on Sunday. All six games so far have been won by the team playing at home. Slovenian star Doncic

Punjab Kings beat RCB by 54 India reach maiden Thomas Cup final IPL: runs to keep play-off hopes alive

BA N G KO K ( T H A I LAND), MAY 13 (PTI): HS Prannoy produced a lion-hearted effort in the decisive fifth match as the Indian men’s badminton team scripted history by reaching the title clash of the Thomas Cup Final for the first time ever with a 3-2 victory over Denmark in an edge-of-the-seat semifinal in Bangkok. Indian team, which never went past the semifinals after 1979, showed tremendous fighting spirit as it came from a match down to outwit the 2016 champions. While world championships silver medallist Kidambi Srikanth and world number 8 doubles pair of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty kept India in the hunt, it was once again left to Prannoy to take the team home when the tie was locked 2-2. Up against world number 13 Rasmus Gemke, Prannoy suffered an ankle injury after slipping on the front court while going for a return but the Indian continued after taking a medical timeout. He looked in pain and his on-court movement also looked restricted but despite all odds, he produced a sensational performance to

come up trumps 13-21, 21-9, 21-12 to etch India’s name in the history books. India will now take on 14-time champion Indonesia, the most successful team in the history. Indonesia edged out Japan 3-2 in its semifinal. It was a creditable performance from the Indian team, which on Thursday had snapped a 43-year long wait by reaching the semifinals with a 3-2 win over fivetime champions Malaysia, a feat last achieved in 1979. It was always going to be an uphill task for India to tame the formidable Den-

mark, which had become the first European country in history to secure the title in 2016. A lot rode on world championship bronze medallist Lakshya Sen, given his recent win over Viktor Axelsen at the German Open Super 300 but he couldn’t replicate his performance as the world number one scripted a comfortable 13-21, 13-21 win to hand Denmark a 1-0 lead. Denmark decided to split its world number 9 pair of Kim Astrup and Anders Skaarup Rasmussen into two halves with Astrup part-

nering Mathias Christiansen in the first doubles. However, Rankireddy and Shetty dished out a gritty performance, holding their nerves in the final stages to beat Astrup and Christiansen 21-18, 21-23, 22-20 to bring India back in the contest. The Indian pair wasted five match points -- two in the second game and three in third game -- before converting one to bring joy back to the Indian camp. With the tie locked 1-1, world number 11 Srikanth and world number 3

Anders Antonsen engaged in a battle of supremacy in the second singles with the former coming out on top with a gritty 21-18, 12-21, 21-15 result to give India a 2-1 lead. India’s second doubles combination of Krishna Prasad Garaga and Vishnuvardhan Goud Panjala, however, was no match for Anders Skaarup Rasmussen and Frederik Sogaard, losing 14-21, 13-21 as the tie was tentatively poised at 2-2 after the fourth match. The experienced Prannoy then lost the opening game but, quite incredibly, led 11-1 in the second game, despite injury. He depended more on his attack to gather points even as Gemke failed to create pressure on the Indian. Prannoy, ranked 13th, stamped his authority with his trademark smashes as Gemke’s defence lay in tatters. The Indian was up 11-4 up at the interval and continued to dominate the proceedings. With the Impact Arena reberberating with chants of “HSP”, Prannoy grabbed nine match points with a straight down the line smash and sealed it on the second opportunity as his teammates huddled together in celebration.

MUMBAI, MAY 13 (PTI): Punjab Kings rode on Jonny Bairstow (66 off 29 balls) and Liam Livingstone’s (70 off 42 balls) pyrotechnics to defeat Royal Challengers Bangalore by 54 runs here on Friday and keep their play-off hopes alive. Invited to bat, Bairstow smashed four boundaries and seven sixes in his knock to start the Punjab Kings innings on an explosive note. His compatriot Livingstone then hammered five fours and four maximums at the back end to take Punjab Kings to 209 for 9. The Kings bowlers then rallied to limit RCB to 155 for nine to stay alive in the competition. While Punjab remain in the mix with 12 points from as many games, the margin of victory considerably improved their net runrate to +0.210 and RCB despite having 14 points from 13 games are at a -0.323. RCB will have to win their final game and move to 16 points but also now need to have some rub of the green with a few favourable results going their way. It was another day and another failure for Virat Kohli (20), who got a faint

under-edge tickle on his gloves before it hit his thigh pad and bobbed up to short fine leg off a Kagiso Rabada (4-0-21-3) delivery. Rishi Dhawan (4-0-362), perhaps the weakest link in Punjab attack, then made up for his lack of pace by hitting immaculate length as Faf du Plessis edged one to Jitesh Sharma behind stumps and Mahipal Lomror’s rasping pull shot was taken by Shikhar Dhawan. Rajat Patidar (26) and Glenn Maxwell (35) did add 64 runs but they were never in the game with both departing in quick succession. And when Dinesh Karthik (11) was snuffed out by the brilliant Arshdeep Singh (4-0-27-1) with a wide

yorker and a catch by short third-man on the circle, RCB fizzled out in a jiffy. Kagiso Rabada (3/21) snared three wickets, while Rahul Chahar (2/37) and Rishi Dhawan (2/36) accounted for two RCB batters each. For RCB, death over specialist Harshal Patel (4/34) and spinner Wanindu Hasaranga (2/15) were the top bowlers. BRIEF SCORE: Punjab Kings 209 for 9 in 20 overs (Liam Livingstone 70, Jonny Bairstow 66; Harshal Patel 4/34 ,Wanindu Hasaranga 2/15) Royal Challengers Bangalore 155 for 9 in 20 overs (Glenn Maxwell 35, Rajat Pitidar 26; Kagiso Rabada 3/21)

L O N D O N , M AY 1 3 (AGENCIES): For mer world champion Amir Khan has announced his retirement from boxing after a 17-year professional career. The Briton, 35, is a former unified light-welterweight world champion and won silver at the 2004 Athens Olympics. His final bout was a sixth-round knockout loss against rival Kell Brook who also retired last week. “It’s time to hang up

my gloves,” Khan posted on social media. “I feel blessed to have had such an amazing career that has spanned over 27 years.” Khan finishes his career with 34 professional wins and six losses, having turned professional in 2005. “I want to say a heartfelt thanks to the incredible teams I have worked with and to my family, friends and fans for the love and support they have shown me,” he added.

Khan burst on to the scene as a 17-year-old at the 2004 Olympics. He was the only boxing representative for Team GB at the Games. A silver medal in Athens generated additional funding for Team GB and paved the way for future Olympic stars such as Anthony Joshua and Nicola Adams. It also thrust Khan into the limelight and his transition into professional boxing came amid huge fanfare. NAVI MUMBAI, MAY 13 (AGENCIES): There was no Decision Review System (DRS) available at the start of the Indian Premier League match between Chennai Super Kings and Mumbai Indians until the fourth over due to a power issue at Wankhede Stadium. The toss was delayed by a few minutes as well

as one of the floodlight towers couldn’t get enough electricity. “Before the toss there was a short circuit and there was an issue in the system. Because of this, the toss was delayed. One floodlight tower wasn’t getting enough power supply. Also, power supply to the broadcast production got affected, after which

the officials worked to restore the system,” a Mumbai Cricket Association official told The Indian Express. It is understood that there was a fault with the diesel generator that was providing power to the broadcast production setup. The broadcasters had to use back-up power sup-

ply from the MCA instead, which took some time to become operational. Meanwhile, CSK lost Devon Conway lbw for a golden duck in the very first over from Daniel Sams. But Conway was unable to review what looked like a tight call at best with the ball angled in and hitting Conway in front of leg stump.

KTC to organise Kohima Super Cup from May 16 Correspondent

KOHIMA, MAY 13 (NPN): Kohima Town Club (KTC) will be organising Kohima Super Cup (KSC) from May 16-31 at Indira Gandhi Stadium, Kohima. Informing this at a press conference at Where’s The Food restaurant, here on Friday, organising committee convenor, Zedikuolie Kire said KTC had rechristened erstwhile Kohima Super League to now KSC in order to accommodate more players and teams from all across the State. He disclosed that KTC, with 40 members strong, was formed in 2017 to promote football in the district with a vision to help players reach higher levels through this event. He said with the recent relaxation in the Covid-19 SOPs KTC has decided to organise the event. A total of 17 teams have registered to participate out of which a team of best players would be shortlisted and they will get a chance to play with Indian Super League players from Manipur on June 4, Kire said. The winner will receive a cash prize of Rs 1.80 lakh while the first runner-up would receive Rs 1.20 lakh and the other two semifinalists would each recieve Rs 30,000. Apart from the individual prizes awarded in the earlier editions, Kire said the organisers has now added three more individual prizes including player of the tournament. Ticket for entry will be Rs 50 which would be enhanced to Rs 100 from

quarter finals onwards. KTC president, Dr Viketoulie Pienyü, pointed out the need to seriously work for the upliftment of players from the grass root level. He opined that KTC was working to ensure the growth of fanbase for local players as this would help in revenue generation and self-sustenance of players. With the aim to encourage the players and more importantly to expose them to players from bigger arenas like Indian Super League and other national level clubs, Dr Pienyü said they had roped in players from neighbouring Manipur to play with local players in an exhibition match. He disclosed that one of the core objectives of the club was to initiate football revolution in the State which was evident as after its earlier editions similar events had also popped up even in the other districts. He also shared about the future

plans of the club which was to make events televised nationally, which he said, was a possibility with more participation from the people. Answering to a query on how the teams were preparing for the tournament, a representative of Secretariat United said the team was solely made up of government employees and that they have many senior players including a 50 year old, the team was excited to be part of the event since they love the game and wishes to see it grow. Answering to another query on the inclusion of non-local players, he said bringing such players from neighbouring States or even other States was a win-win situation as it would give more exposures to the local teams and attract viewers from other parts of the country. The inaugural to the event would be held on May 16 with senior SP, Kohima, Kevithuto Sophie as the guest.
