Covid-19 still remains deadly: WHO warns amid new variants circulating
G E N E VA , A P R 1 3 (AGENCIES): Covid remains a major public health danger, World Health Organisation (WHO) emergency committee on Covid-19 on Wednesday unanimously affirmed. T h e wo r l d h e a l t h agency further insisted that countries must stop dropping their guard. Also, WHO chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus pointed out that the world is “still in the middle of the pandemic” and the fact that “Covid still remains deadly”. The committee meets every three months to discuss the pandemic and reports to World Health Organisation chief. Noting that many nations relaxing public health and social measures, and drastically reducing testing for the virus, WHO said, “Now is not the time to let our guard down -- on the contrary, and this is an
Make Model College functional, says KSU DIMAPUR, APR 13 (NPN): Konyak Students’ Union (KSU) has appealed to the state government to make Model College at Wakching under Mon District fully functional starting this academic session. KSU president T Noklem Konyak and general secretary A Pangnan stated that foundation stone of the Model College was laid on June 27, 2015 and inaugurated on February 3, 2019, but the college remained non-functional till date. KSU has expressed dismay at the “blatant negligence” on the part of the state government and the department. Even after submitting several representations by KSU and Eastern Nagaland College Students’ Union (ENCSU), the union said that the government has turned a blind eye to the issue. The union has, therefore, urged the government to immediately intervene and make the college functional.

extremely strong recommendation.” “The situation is far from over with regard to the Covid-19 pandemic, the circulation of the virus is still very active, mortality remains high and the virus is evolving in an unpredictable way,” committee chair Didier Houssin warned during a press conference. “Now is not the time for relaxation on this virus, nor weakness in surveillance, testing and reporting, nor laxity in public and social health measures and no resignation when it comes
to vaccination.” Globally, in the week to Sunday, the number of new Covid-19 cases and deaths continued to decline for a third consecutive week, with more than seven million cases and over 22,000 deaths reported. This was the lowest number of Covid deaths since the early days of the pandemic. But, some countries continue to report serious spikes in cases, which is putting pressure on hospitals, said Tedros, adding that the world is “still in the middle of the pandemic”. “This virus has over time become more transmissible and it remains deadly especially for the unprotected and unvaccinated that don’t have access to health care and antivirals,” he said. WHO chief urged all to get vaccinated and continue following COVID protocols.

DIMAPUR, APR 13 (NPN): A new transporter body in the name and style of All Nagaland Goods Movers Union (ANGMU) has been formed under the initiative of Dimapur Chamber of Commerce and Industry (DCCI). In a press release, DCCI vice president V Shikuto Achumi informed that the formation of the new transport union comes against the backdrop of the September 25, 2021 joint meeting wherein the then Dimapur transport union was banned and subsequently dissolved. The joint meet was convened by Confederation of Nagaland Chamber of Commerce & Industry (CNCCI) and DCCI. The chamber informed that formation of ANGMU was necessitated as there was an urgent need to have a transporter union to facilitate
smooth flow of goods and essential commodities into the state especially the commercial hub Dimapur. DCCI said that the new transport body would also act as a bridge between transporters, traders and various government agencies to ensure and streamline supply of goods and essential commodities. Besides, it would also check random illegal taxation that was responsible for price inflation. DCCI stated that it would strictly monitor the functioning of ANGMU and work collectively for welfare of transporters and business community keeping in mind the sentiments of the common public. The chamber has requested all registered transporters and business community of Dimapur to cooperate with ANGMU.

MoRTH dismisses false report on vehicle fitness fee
ASU not to cooperate with present NSF team; asks govt to resolve NIDA issue by April 17
DIMAPUR, APR 13 (NPN): The Ministry of Road Transport & Highways (MoRTH) on Wednesday dismissed some false/ misleading news items, which claimed that the penalty for delay in fitness of the vehicles has been increased drastically by the Central government. The ministr y, in a statement, stated that such news items were “totally false, misleading and beyond any truth.” It clarified that MoRTH had issued a notification vide GSR 714 (E) dt October 4, 2021 for revision of registration fee, fitness testing fee and fitness certification fee of vehicles. It said the notification was issued as a disincentive for vehicle owners who have vehicles more than 15 years old conforming to BS I/II/ III emission norms, which were comparatively more polluting as compared to vehicles conforming to BS IV/VI emission norms.
state government’s attention on this issue, if it is dictated by any party, that advocates unfair proposition.” ASU reminded that even as it had been championing the superannuation issue in line with the NSF in the past, it has reiterated that the case involving the demand of NIDA on the superannuation issue was “unique as compared to other service sectors” especially in the light of the declaration by prime minister Narendra Modi, “ to enhance the age of superannuation of medical doctors to 65 years on 26th May, 2016, followed by cabinet approval on 27th September, 2017 and amendment of the Fundamental Rules (Second Amendment) on 11th August 2018” and implementation of the age of superannuation for medical doctors by the rest of the states. ASU said it had categorically asserted to the NSF “to examine this need
DIMAPUR, APR 13 (NPN): Angami Students Union (ASU) has decided to “not cooperate with the incumbent NSF team, until such time the union (ASU) retrieve its faith on the federation and the matter is widely put to rest.” According to ASU president Bisevi Nakhro and general secretary Mhalevilie Medoze, the decision to not cooperate with NSF was because it (ASU) was “extremely perturbed by the biased stand of the Naga Students Federation (NSF)” over the federation’s stand on the doctors’ superannuation issue as reported in several local dailies on April 12. Further, ASU also directed any Angami leaders, “participating/involving in NSF or its subordinate bodies, to withdraw their support until further notice, and thereof, the ASU will be constrained to be vigilant about their functionings.” ASU cautioned that the (Cont’d on p-8) union “shall not tolerate the
India logs 1,088 new Covid cases NEW DELHI, APR 13 (PTI): India saw a single day rise of 1,088 new Covid infections taking the total tally of cases to 4,30,38,016, while the death toll climbed to 5,21,736 with 26 fresh fatalities, the Health ministry stated. NPN adds: Nagaland on Wednesday reported three fresh cases while no deaths were recorded. All three cases were reported from Dimapur, taking the State’s total caseload to 35487. The death toll remained unchanged at 759 (including 4 non-Covid deaths but with positivity).
through the 2nd federal assembly by tabling the issue, considering the requirement of more medical doctors to facilitate the number of doctors and also to help early commencement of medical colleges in Nagaland.” However, ASU said that despite its appeal, the NSF had “blatantly taken a biased decision by remaining silent on Naga doctors of other Naga homeland states, who are already availing the age of superannuation by opposing the same extension for the state of Nagaland.” ASU maintained it saw no logic in the NSF’s silence when the other Naga homeland states under the umbrella of NSF implemented the superannuation and availing it. Further, ASU said recent press statements by NSF called for maintaining status quo but at the same time, giving space for superannuation, “if the existing superannuation policy is reviewed”. Irani schools Maha minister after the latter implied ‘Nagaland is not a part of India’ NEW DELHI, APR 13 (AGENCIES): Congress leader who is also the Minister of Women and Child Development in Maharashtra, Yashomati Thakur was schooled by Union minister Smriti Irani after she implied that Nagaland is not a part of India, OpIndia report stated. While addressing the Zonal Conference of States and Union Territories and stakeholders of the Western region in Mumbai on April 12, Yashomati talked about deportation to and from Nagaland, and the union minister had to interject
and correct the Maharashtra Minister that Nagaland was very much part of India and there was no deportation within Indian states. In the video, which also went viral on social media, Yashomati was heard saying, “With some states and countries we do have an MoU but with the others, especially, children coming from Nagaland… woman coming from Nagaland…they…”, before the Congress leader completed her sentence, Union Minister Smriti Irani interjected to remind her that Naga-
land is very much part of the country. Yashomati, for a second, rectified her statement by replacing ‘Nagaland’ with ‘Thailand’, but again quickly went on to justify her statement by saying, “It is our own country I understand, but there are children coming to the states and again ‘deported’ to the states without any notification. So Nagaland is also one of the states from where children come over here and we ‘deport’ them without any notification as we do not have an MoU within the states (Cont’d on p-8) also”.

NCR schools to shut but experts allay fears
NEW DELHI, APR 13 (AGENCIES): People with schoolgoing kids are on tenterhooks again after a number of students tested positive for Covid in a few National Capital Region schools, forcing the institutions to shut down temporarily. But public health experts and epidemiologists say that unless the rising instances of Covid-19 cases result in growing hospitalisation numbers or severe dis(Cont’d on p-8) ease there should be little to
worry about. The cases may only be a sign that Covid-19 is reaching an endemic phase in the country, they add. Over the last two days, at least three schools in Ghaziabad and Noida, satellite towns of Delhi, have announced a complete halt in physical classes switching to online mode after many students and some teachers tested positive for Covid. In one of the schools in Ghaziabad, 13 cases of Covid-19, including students
as well as teachers, were reported following which the school announced a closure for a week. Schools in Delhi say that they want to avoid closing the whole school in case of such an eventuality and will focus on monitoring and isolation. Secretary, S&WC department, K. Libanthung Lotha along with officers of the department.
DIMAPUR: Department of Soil and Water Conservation (S&WC) secretary, K. Libanthung Lotha released a booklet titled, “Meteorological report of Nagaland 2021” in the secretary’s office chamber on Wednesday, in the presence of department officials.
In a press release, the department informed that in the opening remarks, joint director S&WC, Rongsenlemzung highlighted the importance of meteorological data for all agricultural related activities. He said that in the light of the climate and water
related threats and the fast pace at which climate is changing, it was of most pressing need not only to record but also document weather data. The booklet was published by the Soil Survey & Land Use planning Wing of the department.
NH-02: ALAU to disallow construction works
DIMAPUR: Reiterating the “unresolved issues still pending” with regard to payments of land/damaged compensation for 2-lane constructions from Doyang to Izheto under NH-02, Aggrieved Landowners Adhoc Union (ALAU) on Wednesday stated that unless the issues were resolved with aggrieved landowners, “no construction activities will be allowed” and responsible department officials would be held responsible for any delays or obstructions. In a press release, chairman Er. KT Hevito Labo and secretary & counsel Z. Abel Assumi stated that the deputy commissioner instead of “resolving the mess left behind by his predecessor” was “trying to force the village councils to issue NOCs” which it said was a futile exercise. Claiming that final survey was done (2016-17), ALAU said NH authority Mokokchung division along with district administration Zunheboto “carried out reassessment”
of the compensations “clandestinely between June-November 2020 without knowledge of affected landowners, except few influential/ handpicked individuals.” It alleged that DC Zunheboto without knowledge of landowners submitted damage assessment report to EE PWD, NH Div-11, Mokokchung “with different dates on signature and issue members”. After receiving the same from DC, ALAU claimed that EE PWD NH Div-11 forwarded the revised estimates to chief engineer, PWD, NH Nagaland Kohima “under suspicious signature.” The union stated that no further correspondence from CE PWD NH Kohima nor approval order for revised estimates was given by any authority. It questioned DC Zunheboto and EE PWD, NH Mokokchung as to who ordered for revised estimates after approval sanction was received from MORTH and why the landowners were kept in the dark.

OIL gets Rs 57cr ransom demand from cyber attacker GUWAHATI/DIBRUGARH, APR 13 (PTI): PSU major Oil India, which suffered a cyberattack disrupting its operations in Assam, has received a ransom demand of USD 75,00,000 (over Rs 57 crore) from the perpetrator, officials said on Wednesday. A case was registered under various sections of the Indian Penal Code and the Information Technology Act, 2000, after the company lodged a complaint with the police. The public sector undertaking OIL and the government exchequer have incurred a huge financial loss due to the cyberattack ransomware, as the business through the IT system has been seriously affected, OIL Manager (Security) Sachin Kumar said in the police complaint. The cyberattack took place on April 10 at OIL’s one of the workstations of the Geological and Reservoir department, but it was intimated by the IT department on Tuesday, he said. “After their preliminary investigation, it came to their notice that OIL’s network, server and clients’ PCs are facing network outage. “Further, it also came to their notice that cyberattacker has demanded USD 75,00,000 as a ransom
through a note from the infected PC,” Kumar said. The server, network and other related services of the company are affected, he added. A senior Assam Police official in Dibrugarh district said they registered a case under the various sections of the IPC and IT Act, and started an investigation into the matter. OIL Spokesperson Tridiv Hazarika told PTI from its field headquarters in Duliajan that the company is working on repairing the system in phases and “it will take time”. “Our online systems are down and we are working offline. The drilling and production work has been unaffected. The data are being saved offline now and it will be uploaded later when the IT system will run again,” he said. A senior official of the OIL’s pipeline headquarters at Narengi in Guwahati told PTI that they have shut down their entire network, although their system has not suffered any attack as of now. “Our work is badly affected as we are fully dependent on the internet network. Our IT engineers are constantly monitoring the situation and they are fully prepared to thwart any cyberattack,” the official said on condition of anonymity.

IMPHAL, APR 13: Manipur chief minister N Biren Singh on Wednesday pitched for organic farming during an interaction with local farmers at Farmers’ Meet cum Interaction Programme here. The state agriculture department hosted the programme in Imphal’s City Convention Centre. Singh, in his address, appealed to the farmers to gradually shift towards organic farming and move away from farming that required chemical fertilizers for a healthier society. In this regard, the chief minister urged state agriculture minister Th Bishwajit Singh present at the programme to look into the feasibility of providing incentives to the farmers switching to organic farming. The chief minister further said that a Farmers’ Cell should be set up by the department on the lines of “CM da haisi” with toll-free phone numbers, where a dedicated set of officials and staff will receive grievances from the farmers and act to resolve them. “This cell will help in narrowing the gap between the officials and the farmers,” he said. Highlighting the importance of the agriculture sector to bring forward development, Singh said that

the Prime Minister’s special focus on the agriculture sector is for it to become self-reliant. Hinting that there was a lack of transparency, coordination, and communication among the departments, the chief minister stressed that government departments were all correlated and required coordination among them. He said that a joint effort of the agriculture, forest, minor irrigation, CADA, horticulture, veterinary departments was necessary to develop agriculture in the state and to look into the grievances highlighted

In its second e-mail to Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma last week, the group had demanded the release of former Hynniewtrep National Liberation Council (HNLC) leader Julius K Dorphang by Sunday and threatened
to blow up an LP school if their demand was not fulfilled. The e-mail sent by the publicity secretary of the group, who said that he was a teacher before his contract was terminated, demanded that Dorphang should be released and left alone inside a bus at the ISBT platform at 10:00 pm sharp on 9th of April, 2022 (Sunday). Dorphang is currently serving a 25-year sentence after having been convicted of raping a minor girl in 2017. Without a proper market, their products will perish which will only discourage them,” he said. Stating that the e-marketing system has made it easier to sell products, he said the responsibility of the officials is to focus on that how to market the farmers’
products. State agriculture minister Thongam Biswajit Singh, commissioner of agriculture M Joy Singh, director of agriculture N Gojendro and experts attended the programme. approves Rs 5911 crore for Contractor’s death: K’taka Min refuses to quit Govt Rashtriya Gram Swaraj Abhiyan
BENGALURU, APR 13 (PTI): Senior Karnataka Minister R Eshwarappa has been booked for abetment of suicide in connection with the alleged suicide of a 37 year-old civil contractor who had accused him of corruption, but remained defiant in the face of mounting pressure for his ouster from the state Cabinet, saying there was no need for his resignation. Stepping up pressure, opposition Congress urged state Governor Thaawarchand Gehlot to dismiss Eshwarappa from the council of Ministers, even as the embattled BJP leader called for a probe into the ‘conspiracy’ behind the death of Santosh K Patil, who had levelled the bribery charges against him earlier. While Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai said he would speak to Eshwarappa on the issue to find out what actually happened, BJP general secretary and Karnataka in-charge Arun Singh maintained this was not a simple incident and that every aspect of it would be investigated. The family members of Patil refused to accept his

body until the accused in the case are not arrested. Earlier, the Udupi police filed an FIR against Eshwarappa, the Karnataka Rural Development and Panchayat Raj (RDPR) minister for abetment of suicide over the contractor’s death, based on a complaint from his brother Prashanth Patil. The FIR was registered on Tuesday night. Patil was earlier in the day found dead at a Udupi lodge. The complaint by Prashanth named Eshwarappa and his staff members Ramesh and Basavaraj as the accused. In the complaint, Prashanth Patil said in the year 2020-21 residents of Hindalaga village had called on Eshwarappa in Ben-
galuru and requested him to lay roads, construct storm water drain and pavement in the hamlet. He further said that Eshwarappa gave the nod to start work without worrying about the budget, following which Santosh Patil was awarded the contract. The complainant contended that his brother had undertaken works worth Rs four crore in the village. He had invested his money in the project and the bill for the work was pending. Santosh had visited minister Eshwarappa several times and pleaded him to release the amount. But his close aides Basavaraj and Ramesh were demanding 40 per cent commission, the complaint alleged. The Udupi police on Wednesday completed the inquest into the death of Patil. Meanwhile, in Shivamogga, Eshwarappa ruled out resigning from his post, even as he wondered if a Whatsapp message can be treated as a “death note,” referring to the purported Whatsapp message from Patil. “The question of my
House constructed under PMAY on govt land demolished in Khargone
KHARGONE (MP), APR 13 (PTI): A house constructed under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana on government land was demolished in Khargone city of Madhya Pradesh following violence on Ram Navami. The house was supposed to be built somewhere else and it was being used for other than residential purposes, an official claimed on Tuesday, following reports that a house under PMAY was demolished in the action against those involved in the violence. The house, located on Birla Marg in Khaskhaswadi area, belonged to Hasina Fakhroo (60). It was demolished on Monday by local authorities during a drive against `illegal’ properties allegedly belonging to those involved in the stone-pelting and other forms of violence that broke out during a Ram Navami procession the day before.
One of the houses which was demolished.
Chief Municipal Officer Priyanka Patel said the house was supposed to come up somewhere else. “Under PMAY, houses are meant for residential purposes, but when the municipal team went in, it found it was being used for some other purpose. Nobody was living there. “They constructed the house on government land while they had got approval under PMAY for house at a different place. A case of
encroachment was going on in the tehsil court. The tehsildar had issued orders for its removal,” Patel added. Fakhroo, the house owner, told reporters that her family was living on the same plot of land in a kuccha house before they became beneficiaries of PMAY. But when asked if the land belonged to her, she said, “No, it is government land, and we have been living on it for years.”
resignation does not arise at all. I will not bow to the opposition demand for my resignation,” Eshwarappa said in a press conference at his home town. Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai, speaking to reporters in Mangaluru, “an FIR has been filed.” “I am going to talk to him (Eshwarappa) now, and will collect information from him. Will talk to him on a few things over the phone and will summon him for a one-to-one discussion.” Accusing the opposition Congress of attempting to find fault in the case, he said the investigation will reveal the truth. The CM reiterated that there will not be any interference in the case and the inquiry will happen in accordance with the law. Bommai maintained that the BJP national leaders were aware of this entire issue. BJP Karnataka in charge Arun Singh said, “This is a very sad incident. I express my deepest sorrow over it. The Chief Minister is getting the entire case investigated. What are the angles behind it? Who are

behind this? Who abetted him? There will be a decision shortly on this,” Singh told reporters in Chikkodi in Belagavi district. Meanwhile, the opposition Congress sought to step up the pressure on the ruling BJP, with a party delegation led by Leader of Opposition Siddaramaiah and the party’s state chief D K Shivakumar calling on Governor Gehlot and demanding Eshwarappa’s dismissal from the cabinet. Congress workers and the Aam Aadmi Party activists staged a demonstration in the city demanding action against Eshwarappa. They demanded his sacking from the Cabinet. Meanwhile, Patil’s brother Prashanth demanded that the accused should be arrested before the postmortem of the body is conducted. “We will not allow shifting of the body to Manipal. We have already informed our stand to Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai. We are fighting for justice and the decision has been taken for the peace of Santhosh’s soul,” Patil told reporters in Udupi.
NEW DELHI, APR 13 (PTI): The government on Wednesday approved Rs 5,911 crore for the Rashtriya Gram Swaraj Abhiyan (RGSA) which will focus on empowering elected representatives of panchayati raj institutions for leadership roles and help 2.78 lakh rural local bodies achieve the sustainable development goals. Can’t issue direction to Parliament, says SC on plea for uniform law for trusts NEW DELHI, APR 13 (IANS): The Supreme Court on Wednesday declined to entertain a petition seeking a direction for a uniform law for trust and trustees, charities and charitable institutions, and religious endowments and institutions. A bench, headed by Justice D.Y. Chandrachud, told petitioner advocate Ashwini Kumar Upadhyay, that “it is a well settled principle that no court issues a mandamus to the Parliament, to pass a law”. The bench, also comprising Justice Surya Kant, told Upadhyay that he is saying there should be a common law for all trusts, but this matter is within the domain of the Parliament, and the court cannot pass any direction. As Upadhyay submitted there is an alternate prayer, Justice Surya Kant said: “The prayer itself is an interference with the
power of the legislature.” Justice Chandrachud said: “We do not want it to be a publicity stunt by making you read the petition here in court. We cannot direct Parliament in any case. We cannot issue a mandamus.” Upadhyay replied that he is challenging vires of the law, but Justice Chandrachud said: “How can you challenge this in abstract?” The bench told Upadhyay if he is aggrieved by provisions of law, then he can challenge it, and asked him to show the facts. Justice Surya Kant said: “If you have been evicted under the Act then we understand but in abstract as an academic exercise, how can we...” Upadhyay said he has filed a PIL in public interest. The bench replied, “Has your property been appropriated? we have to be very careful when we entertain a PIL to challenge the validity of a law passed by parlia-
ment, challenging malnutrition etc., is different.” The top court said: “Ashwini Kumar Upadhyay, who appears in person, seeks the permission of the court to withdraw the petition so as to enable him to pursue such remedies as are available in law. The petition is accordingly dismissed as withdrawn. No opinion has been expressed by this court on any aspect of the petition.” The plea said: “Petitioner is filing this writ petition as a PIL under Art 32 seeking appropriate writ/ order/direction/declaration that the state can enact only Uniform Law for Trust-Trustees, CharitiesCharitable Institutions and Religious EndowmentsInstitutions as enumerated in Item 10 and 28 of List-III, 7th Schedule in consonance with Art 14-15, and can’t make separate law for Waqf and Waqf properties.”
viding the balance Rs 2,211 crore, he said. The scheme will also converge capacity building initiatives of other ministries/ departments for attainment of SDGs, an official statement said. The total financial outlay of the scheme is Rs 5,911 crore with the central share of Rs 3,700 crore and that of the states Rs 2,211 crore, it said. “The approved scheme of RGSA will help more than 2.78 lakh rural local bodies including traditional bodies across the country to develop governance capabilities to deliver on SDGs through inclusive local governance with focus on optimum utilisation of available resources,” the statement said. The RGSA, a centrally sponsored scheme, was first approved by the Union Cabinet in 2018 for implementation from 2018-19 to 2021-22. The main central components of the scheme included incentiviasation of panchayats and mission mode project on e-Panchayat including other activities at central level.

Hate speech cases: United front of secular forces Stalin declares Ambedkar birth will win 2024 elections: Yechury Akbaruddin Owaisi acquitted anniversary as ‘Equality Day’
CPI(M) General Secretary Sitaram Yechury addresses a press conference at party headquarters, in New Delhi. (PTI)
NEW DELHI, APR 13 (PTI): CPI (M) general secretary Sitaram Yechury on Wednesday said bringing down the Narendra Modi government is the top priority for the party and claimed that a united front of secular forces will win the 2024 parliamentary elections. “Attacks are being carried out on the democratic rights of the people. Isolation and defeat of the BJP is absolutely imperative. It is essential that this government must go,” Yechury said at a press conference here. Replying to a query on efforts being made for creation of a united opposition front to take on the BJP in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, the CPI (M) leader said non-BJP parties would form an alliance, either directly or with some mutual understand-
ing, in states and then they would go for it at national level. “It will happen in every state, and there will be a united front of secular forces that will form government after 2024 elections,” he said. Yechury said that his party will strive to unite the Left and democratic forces and form a joint front. Citing incidents of violence and attacks on people, he alleged that the BJP-led government at the Centre is “aggressively” advancing the RSS’ “Hindutva communal agenda” in the country while practising “the worst form of authoritarianism”. While the central agencies are being used against the BJP’s rivals, dissent against the government is treated as “anti-national” and sedition charges are slapped, the
CPI (M) leader charged. The BJP government has mounted “a multipronged attack through the pursuit of rabid neo-liberal reforms strengthening the communal corporate nexus, looting of national assets, promoting crony capitalism, legalising political corruption and imposing full-fledged authoritarianism,” he alleged. The five-day party congress, which concluded in Kerala’s Kannur on Sunday, has identified its main task in a political resolution as being that of “isolating and defeating the BJP”, the CPI (M) leader said. To achieve this goal, Yechury said the party decided to adopt a multipronged strategy which included the task of “significantly” growing the independent strength of the CPI (M) enabling its political intervention capacities to be “more effective”. “Simultaneously, the party congress decided to strengthen the unity of the Left forces and to forge the Left and democratic front based on an alternative policy programme, alternative to the policies of the ruling classes, and on this basis to sharpen people’s struggles,” he said. He also said the party will work to forge “the broadest mobilisation” of the secular forces against “Hindutva communalism”.

O
n April 12, a lone gunman sent off smoke grenades in a crowded subway car and then fired at least 33 shots with a 9 mm handgun in injuring around a dozen commuters, five of them seriously. According to media reports, data of 2018 made available in 2021 by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention(CDCP) from National Center for Health Services revealed that 38,390 deaths by firearm of which, 24,432 were by suicide. Again, data in the USA reports that about 10,40,000 people have died from firearm between 1968 to 2011. In 2022 alone, from January to April 12, there have been 224 shootings throughout the USA where 173 were killed and many more injured. These killings have become almost unbridled in the USA mainly because the powerful gun lobby has effectively blocked all attempts to either strictly regulate sale of guns or impose severe penalties on carriage of use of unlicensed weapons. Gun culture was first coined by Richard Hofstadter in an American Heritage article critiquing the gun violence in the United States. As in the past, in the aftermath of such incidents, there have been immediate calls by politicians, victims, and advocates for reforms to America’s gun laws - but proposals to expand background checks or ban certain types of guns typically haven’t gotten very far. This is because the lawmakers in the USA are divided on the issue. The prominent supporters or pro-gun lobby( favouring unrestricted access and use ) such as former US president Donald Trump and his Republican party, maintain that the problem was not guns but mental health of those involved in shootings. Florida Republican Sen. Marco Rubio said assault weapons bans didn’t work in the past and wouldn’t work now because there are so many guns already on the street. However, research does not support a link between being diagnosed with a mental health disorder and an increased risk of committing a violent crime, according to experts in the field. The ordinary American citizen maintained that - “If a bad guy wants a gun, they’ll find a way to get it.” The USA boasts the highest number of civilian firearms per capita - 270 million, or 89 guns for every 100 residents, according to Small Arms Survey research published in 2011. In mass shootings in public places — so called “soft targets” , the conversation often turns to whether churches, schools, or other places where large groups of people gather need to increase security to prevent future incidents. The pro-gun lobby believes that schools and institutions or citizens have the option to arm themselves for protection. What has kept guns from being brought under government control is the USA’s Second Amendment which affirms that - “a well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.” Despite mounting pressure for gun control, a 5-4 decision in 2008 by the U.S. Supreme Court declared owning firearms an “individual right.” Though the Democratic Party is by and large in favour of gun control, yet the powerful gun lobby in the USA has its say. That freedom has turned gun shops in the USA as numerous as paan shops in India.
DailyDevotion What To Do When Your Burden Is Overwhelming Cast your burden on the Lord… —Psalm 55:22 We must recognize the difference between burdens that are right for us to bear and burdens that are wrong. We should never bear the burdens of sin or doubt, but there are some burdens placed on us by God which He does not intend to lift off. God wants us to roll them back on Him— to literally “cast your burden,” which He has given you, “on the Lord….” If we set out to serve God and do His work but get out of touch with Him, the sense of responsibility we feel will be overwhelming and defeating. But if we will only roll back on God the burdens He has placed on us, He will take away that immense feeling of responsibility, replacing it with an awareness and understanding of Himself and His presence. Many servants set out to serve God with great courage and with the right motives. But with no intimate fellowship with Jesus Christ, they are soon defeated. They do not know what to do with their burden, and it produces weariness in their lives. Others will see this and say, “What a sad end to something that had such a great beginning!” “Cast your burden on the Lord….” You have been bearing it all, but you need to deliberately place one end on God’s shoulder. “…the government will be upon His shoulder” (Isaiah 9:6). Commit to God whatever burden He has placed on you. Don’t just cast it aside, but put it over onto Him and place yourself there with it. You will see that your burden is then lightened by the sense of companionship. But you should never try to separate yourself from your burden.

NAGALAND POST, DIMAPUR THURSDAY, APRIL 14, 2022
“M
y God, My God, why have you forsaken me” was the last word of our Lord Jesus Christ on the cross. Leo Buscaglia says, “Death is a challenge. It tells us not to waste time … It tells us to tell each other right now that we love each other.” The last word is always painful, yet the most memorable one. The last word has transforming power. I do not know how many of us remember the last word of our loved ones. When my father died, his last word was “Take me home”. When the police officer knelt 9 minutes on George Floyd’s last word was, “I can’t breathe”. One of my friends told me that one fully drunk person was about to ride on his motorcycle during the previous Nagaland state election. Since he had lost his balance, they said to him that they would take him home. To their surprise, he threatened them, saying, `who are you? I will beat you!’ Then, he went away. Again, he returned within a few minutes and shouted at them, “Who are you? What do you want to tell me?” Then he left them again. After riding a few meters, he hit a stone, fell, and died instantly. For him, “Who are you? What do you want to tell me?” was the last word. Imagine what will be the last word of

a woman who is being raped and murdered! What would have been her last word? Imagine today thousands of innocent people dying in Ukraine, Palestine, Syria, and Myanmar because of war – what would have been their last word? Covid-19 has killed millions of people, not allowing them to say the last words to their loved ones because they were kept in an isolation ward. Jesus’ last word, “My God, My God, why have you forsaken me?” was the last word. In this word we see the feeling of hopelessness and rejection. But this last word has a transforming word even today. It is confronting evils with the truth. It is sacrificing and suffering one’s life for justice. It is a concrete expression of God’s love in action for reconciliation and peace in the world. To fight against unjust system is not an easy road. It is a struggle. We will face the situation of hopelessness. Jesus’ last word tells us that there is no peace and reconciliation without love and self-sacrifice. Indeed, not by money, not by the exercise of power, not by force, but by love and self-sacrifice can transform the world. Jesus Christ conquered the world of injustice, division, and inequalities by suffering, sacrificing, showing love, and doing justice to people

who have been denied justice and right. The Jews thought that Jerusalem was the only holy place on earth; they believed that no one could encounter God outside of Jerusalem; it is the center of the world, and it is from here that God would rule the world forever. Many wise people, wealthy people, and religious leaders resided in this magnificent city. The Ten Commandment of Moses was kept there. The King, Pharisees, and Sadducees were there to rule, teach, and interpret the laws. The people were proud of this great city of Jerusalem and the great Jerusalem Temple. But in this city, Jesus was betrayed, caught, beaten, tortured, and hanged on a cross. Jesus was taken to the outskirts of Jerusalem and crucified. On the Cross, Jesus cried out, “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?” Jesus cried in utter pain because the city was ruled by power mongers, money worshipers, and dishonest people. This city had full of violence because of arrogance and selfishness. Jesus’ last words on the cross expose the weaknesses of the power. It trampled down all political machinery that wanted to rule the people to fulfill their vested interest. The suffering of Jesus and crucifixion sym-
bolized defeat, mockery, shame, condemnation, and rejection for the Romans and Jewish collaborators. For them, inflicting suffering was an instrument of punishment for criminals, social outcasts, and rebels. It was an instrument of exhibiting the power and authority of the ruler. For Jews’ ruler, the cross was an instrument of silencing the subjects. It was the severest death penalty. The aim was to create fear among the people. It was meant to show that there is no authority above the empire. For the Jews ruler, it is a defeat and total annihilation. But the testimonies of the disciples of Jesus and the believing community in the subsequent years and centuries have testified that suffering for justice is the victory of truth. Military equipments like Tanks, F-16 fighter jets, missiles, and nuclear bombs are all useless weapons for those willing to suffer pain for truth as Jesus Christ did. The weapons can destroy buildings, roads, bridges, and infrastructures and kill and inflict injury to thousands of people, but if people are willing to sacrifice their lives for justice, no powerful weapon can defeat them. Any power and guns cannot crush the spirit of self-sacrifice. Mahatma Gandhi, and Martin

Luther King Jr. stood for non-violence and truth, and enemies could not defeat them. The Roman authority and army could not crush those disciples and armless women who went to the tomb because they were not afraid of suffering for truth. Many missionaries and pastors who dedicated themselves to proclaiming the good news of Jesus Christ were killed, but the power of self-sacrifice could not be defeated. The message of the power of the last words of those who gave their life cannot be suppressed by persecution and anti-conversion law in India, Nepal, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Myanmar, Indonesia, and Malaysia. The spirit of self-sacrifice stands as the symbol of undefeatable power even today. Jesus told his disciples, “If you want to be my disciple, deny yourself and pick up the cross and follow me”. Jesus’s last word on the cross symbolize denying oneself, sacrificing oneself in love for others. Jesus did not flee from the suffering. By embracing the suffering, Jesus showed that the most important prerequisite to bringing change in the world is self-denial. It means giving up one’s possessions and sacrificing one’s family, wealth, prestige, social status, and
greatness. True discipleship involves self-denial for the sake of justice for others. Today, nations spend large sums of money on security and defense - against whom? Yes, to protects the rich and rulers, but not the poor. We have seen no number of arms how powerful they are of use against Covid-19, a stark reality check to us all! Natural disasters, pandemics, and the dead remind us that the desire to accumulate more wealth, weapons, technologies, and power alone cannot protect life. We need to invest our resources in sustainable food security programs and health systems. Weapons cannot protect a community, but only love and care, solidarity, and helping hands can protect life. We must let justice roll like the living water in our society. Otherwise, we will cry one day, “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?” When people stand together in solidarity in love and deny themselves for the common good, no power can challenge and crush us. Good Friday is a great opportunity to retrospect our life in silence and a time to repent our sins that destroy lives. Let us choose life and protect the precious gift of body, but not destruction. A jaunt to Zapami
A
stupendous trip much beyond my expectation, was my visit to Zapami. This trip is a privilege never to be obliterated but to be acknowledged, much thanks to our college departmental trip. This one day trip to Zapami has been a wonderful learning experience for me where I was able to explore the rich cultural heritage of the village and the Naga culture in general. Zapami village is one of the Kuzhami Naga villages of Chakhesang tribe under Pfutsero sub-division of Phek district. It is about 53 kms via Kidima road from Kohima. Lush green valley and rice terrace surrounding the site stands as a captivation for the onlookers with its enchanting scenery. One striking feature of the village was the grand horn-like projection of the houses. According to the tradition, only those family which held the feast of merit can embellish their houses with such kind of decorations. Most of the houses have this horn-like structure which proves that in the past, the village was economically affluent. Much to my excitement, I could explore some olden household items like pounding table, wooden cot (carved out of a single wood), vats for brewing rice beer and big granaries for storing the grains. Of all the sites, what pulled me towards the edge of attraction was the Village Heritage Museum which serves as a repository for preserving the rich cultural heritage. The antiques in the museum ranges from ancient, probably hundreds if not few thousand years to recent times like that of the World War II remains. The items include weapons and shields of ancient warfare, instruments of war and friendship treaties in the form of spears and Bibles, agricultural implements, weaving tools, potteries of different sizes and utilities, metal vessels, bamboo baskets and mats, musical instruments and some remnants of World War ll like empty bomb shells, gas masks, metal water containers, fuel tanks, etc. The collection of these antiques gives us an opportunity to perceive and ponder the ambiance and the way of life of the olden times. I was privileged to meet and interact with the oldest lady in the village who is in her 90’s and learnt about the culture of making yarn for weaving from the sting nettle fibre, thebvo. It is learnt that the Zapami village is one of the early and the original traditional knowledge holders and producers of thebvo weavers. It is an indubitable verity that from the first impression itself, the village enthralled me with its scenic beauty and the exploration of the sites one after the other was quite an intriguing adventure. Moreover, the exploration of these relics and sites instigated my conceptualized knowledge into a practical viewpoint for the study of such historical concept. Overall, my visit to Zapami village has been a delightful and a lucrative experience. This experience has definitely served as a catalyst towards expanding the horizon of my curiosity and a broader perspective of preserving the rich cultural resources of my motherland such as the Zapami village. Ergo, if you are on for a fascinating and a lucrative experience, I would recommend you to visit Zapami Village, aptly alluded as one of the Naga Ancestral Home. UGC notifies guidelines for pursuing 2 Raj Thackeray doing BJP’s bidding: Pawar academic programmes simultaneously
Says his speech bereft of common man’s issues
MUMBAI, APR 13 (PTI): NCP chief Sharad Pawar on Wednesday alleged that Raj Thackeray is doing the BJP’s bidding, a day after the MNS president batted for the Uniform Civil Code and stressed the need for controlling population growth in the country. Queried about Raj Thackeray’s ultimatum to the state government to remove loudspeakers from mosques till May 3, Pawar said, “the government will think over it seriously”, but didn’t elaborate. He also dismissed Raj Thackeray’s allegation that he (Pawar) is an atheist. “I go to temples but don’t believe in showing off,” the NCP chief told reporters. Pawar said his ideals include activist Prabodhankar Thackeray (Raj Thackeray’s grandfather), who opposed the people trying to profit themselves in the name of gods and religions. “He (Prabodhankar Thackeray) did not disrespect (gods and religion), but he criticised those who took disadvantage of it. We people read the writings of

Prabodhankar, but some in his family may not be reading it,” Pawar said in a dig at the MNS chief. Pawar also alleged that attempts are being made to disturb the social unity in Maharashtra and communal ideology is being promoted in the state. Addressing a Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) rally in Thane on Tuesday night, Raj Thackeray had said that if the Shiv Sena-led state government did not remove the high-decibel loudspeakers from mosques before May 3, MNS workers will play the Hanuman Chalisa in front of mosques. “It is obvious that we got to hear through his (Raj Thackeray’s) speech what
the BJP guided him,” Pawar said. He said the MNS chief did not utter a single word about the BJP but targeted the Nationalist Congress Party- a key constituent in the tripartite Maha Vikas Aghadi government led by Shiv Sena. “He tried to discharge the responsibility which the BJP may have given him,” Pawar added. Pawar also termed “childish” Raj Thackeray’s claim that the Enforcement Directorate (ED) had raided the family members of Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar, but not the latter’s cousin Supriya Sule, who is the daughter of the Pawar senior. Ajit Pawar is the neph-
ew of Sharad Pawar. Hitting out at the MNS chief, Pawar said that people need not take seriously the statements of a person who makes a statement once in six months or a year. “An attempt is being made to disturb the social unity in Maharashtra and communal ideology is being encouraged. I appeal to people to not fall prey to such steps aimed at jeopardising peace,” Pawar said. In a swipe, Pawar said he didn’t know the exact nature of “understanding” between the MNS chief and the BJP. “He (Raj Thackeray) did not speak a single word about it (BJP). What does this mean? But the one who calls himself a politician didn’t speak on issues like price rise and unemployment. What does this mean?” he asked. Pawar was irked when asked about Raj Thackeray’s allegation that the ED had raided the family of Ajit Pawar but not Sule- the Baramati MP. “He delivered a childish speech. Why should it be talked about? If something happens in the family of Ajit Pawar, it means it happens to me. Do you think I and Ajit Pawar are different? Aren’t Supriya and Ajit
cousins? Is this a political allegation? It is a childish allegation,” he said. Raj Thackeray had hit out at NCP leaders who accused him of frequently changing his political stand. The MNS chief had also talked about Sharad Pawar walking out of Congress in 1999 raising the “foreign” origin of Sonia Gandhi and then aligning with the same party after forming NCP for power. “My opinion on whether Sonia Gandhi should become the prime minister or not is in the public domain. But I want to underline that Sonia Gandhi had said that she was not the prime ministerial candidate. So, the issue was over once she declared it,” Pawar said. Raj Thackeray would not have made the comments had he read about what happened at that time, the NCP chief added. Pawar dismissed Raj Thackeray’s comments that he plays caste politics and doesn’t take the name of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. The veteran leader also said that Raj Thackeray’s rallies attract large crowds because he uses abusive language and mimics others, which entertain people.
NEW DELHI, APR 13 (PTI): The University Grants Commission (UGC) on Wednesday notified guidelines for pursuing two academic programmes simultaneously in physical, online or distance learning mode. UGC chairman M Jagadesh Kumar on Tuesday announced that the commission has decided to allow students to pursue two fulltime and same-level degree programmes in physical mode simultaneously either at the same university or from different universities. The guidelines come into effect from Wednesday, and no retrospective benefit can be claimed by students who have already done two academic programmes simultaneously prior to the notification of these guidelines. “A student can pursue two full-time academic programmes in physical mode provided that in such cases, class timings for one programme do not overlap with the class timings of the other programme. A student can pursue two academic programmes, one in fulltime physical mode and another in Open and Distance Learning (ODL), online
mode or up to two ODL and online programmes simultaneously,” the guidelines read. “Degree or diploma programmes under ODL or online mode shall be pursued with only such HEIs (higher education institutions) which are recognised by the UGC, Statutory Council or the government of India for running such programmes,” it added. The UGC has informed that degree or diploma programmes under these guidelines shall be governed by the regulations notified by it and also the respective statutory and professional councils, wherever applicable. “The guidelines shall be applicable only to the students pursuing academic programmes other than PhD programme. Based on the guidelines, the universities can devise mechanisms, through their statutory bodies, for allowing
their students to pursue two academic programmes simultaneously,” the UGC said. The UGC has been planning such a move for a long time, but received the go-ahead for it in 2020. The commission had set up a committee in 2012 as well to examine the idea, and consultations were held, but ultimately, the idea was junked. “With the rapid increase in demand for higher education and limited availability of seats in regular stream, several higher education institutions have started a number of programmes in ODL mode to meet aspirations of students. It has also led to the emergence of online education programmes which a student can pursue within the comforts of their home,” the UGC said. “The issue of allowing students to pursue two academic programmes simultaneously has been examined by the commission keeping in view of the provisions envisaged in NEP which emphasises the need to facilitate multiple pathways to learning involving both formal and non-formal education modes,” it added.

BJP MP Tejasvi Surya stopped from visiting Karauli Calls Congress ‘modern-day Muslim League’ JAIPUR, APR 13 (PTI): Comparing Rajasthan CM Ashok Gehlot to Aurangzeb, BJP MP Tejasvi Surya accused the Congress–the “ m o d e r n - d ay M u s l i m League”–of committing atrocities on Hindus after he was stopped from visiting violence-hit Karauli town. Surya, BJP’s Rajasthan chief Satish Poonia and Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM) workers were
stopped near Mahua on the Jaipur-Agra highway, with the authorities citing law and order concerns. Surya and other leaders started a dharna on the spot. They were asked to get into a bus and taken away from the spot but they kept demanding that they be allowed to meet victims of the April 2 violence, which broke out after a bike rally being carried out to mark Hindu new year was pelted with stones. Over 30 people were injured in the violence. Surya, who is also the chief of the BJYM, the
BJP’s youth wing, later at a press conference said they oppose the “appeasement policy” of the ruling Congress in Rajasthan. He said, “This is Rajasthan and not Afghanistan. The state government should stop giving second grade treatment to Hindus. I condemn the anti-Hindu and anti-India policy of the state.” Today’s Congress is the “modern-day Muslim League”, he said. “The way Indian Muslim League was dividing Hindus and committing atrocities against them, today Sonia Gandhi and
Rahul Gandhi and Ashok Gehlot are continuing the same tradition,” Surya alleged. According to Surya, Hindus had brought idols from Mathura’s Madan Mohan temple to Karauli 300 years ago when Mughal ruler Aurangzeb launched an attack. They had hoped that they would get protection in Karauli, he said. “Today, Aurangzeb’s place has been taken by people like Gehlot,” he said. “shattered” by Gehlot, said Surya who called the CM Aurangzeb. Surya alleged the law and order has completely collapsed in Rajasthan and there is a jungle raj prevailing in the state. “The atrocities against the Hindus in the state are increasing. Here, victims are prosecuted and the guilty are set free,” he alleged. Earlier in the day, BJYM workers took out a “Nyay Rally” to meet victims of the violence in Karauli. They were stopped near Mahua on the JaipurAgra highway while on their way to Karauli.
11 booked under ‘No riots, not even tu-tu, main-main in PSA in J&K’s Bandipora UP during Ram Navami’: Adityanath
S R I NAG A R , A P R 1 3 (IANS): Eleven persons allegedly involved in unlawful and subversive activities were booked under the Public Safety Act(PSA) on Wednesday in J&K’s Bandipora district. Police sources said 11 people involved in unlawful and subversive activities in Bandipora district were slapped with PSA and subsequently shifted to different jails. Those booked include some separatist leaders like Abdul Samad Malla alias Inquilabi, Kaiser Ahmad
Parray and others. “A f t e r t h e y w e r e booked under the PSA, these 11 persons were shifted to different jails”, the sources said. PSA is a harsh law under which a person can be booked for two years without any judicial intervention. Such detentions can only be challenged in the high court. Introduced in 1978, the act was meant to deal with timber smuggling. Over the years, the law has been used against anti-national and subversive elements.
LU C K N OW, A P R 1 3 (PTI): Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has said there is no place for riots in Uttar Pradesh, stressing that the Ram Navami celebrations coinciding with Ramzan went off without any incident of violence -- not even an altercation or “tu-tu, main-main”. His remark at an event Tuesday came against the backdrop of recent cases of communal violence in Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, West Bengal and Gujarat. Adityanath said the sit-
uation during Ram Navami reflected the “new thinking of development” in UP. He said Ram Navamirelated processions were taken out at 800 places in the state that has a population of 25 crore. It is also the month of Ramzan and “roza-iftar” programmes are also being held, he added. “Nowhere has there been any ‘tu-tu, main-main’ (altercation), leave alone rioting.” “There is no place for ‘danga-phasad’ (rioting),” he said, adding that the state
also has no room for anarchy, goodaism and rumourmongering. “Uttar Pradesh has proved this on the occasion of Ram Navami, the pious ‘jayanti’ of ‘Maryada Purshottam Shri Ram’,” he said. No communal riot was reported during Ram Navami in the state. However, the opposition Samajwadi Party has targeted the BJP government over “inaction” after a hate speech against Muslims by a seer, Bajrang Muni Das.
‘love jihad’. “Love Jihad is a term used by the RSS and Sangh forces to attack religious minorities. The CPI(M) has already made its stand clear on the topic. Marriage is the choice of individuals and the legal system of the country permits adults to get married according to their choice,” he told reporters here. He said Thomas’ controversial remark supporting the ‘love jihad’ charges should be seen as a slip of the tongue and the former MLA was also convinced of the mistake now. Mohanan also said the
DYFI leader could have informed the party leadership about the marriage plan and avoided unwanted controversy. Meanwhile, the newlymarried couple denied the allegations by Jyotsna’s relatives. Addressing reporters in Alappuzha, where the couple is presently staying, Jyotsna said she has all the freedom to stick to her religion till her death. Shejin clarified that the marriage is a natural culmination of their love affair and the controversy was ‘unnecessary.’ Retracting his earlier
stance, George M Thomas told media today that his words were conveniently twisted by communal forces to suit their version of interreligious marriage as ‘love jihad’. He maintained that he endorsed his party’s stand on love marriages. However, the marriage has hurt the sentiments of the Christian community, the left leader claimed. The CPI(M) district leadership is organising an explanation meeting at Kodencherry this evening as the controversy over the wedding refused to die down despite the couple denying ‘love jihad’ charges. Meanwhile, Muraleedharan said in New Delhi that the CPI(M) leaders and workers, who had insulted Pala Bishop Joseph Kallarangatt over his ‘love jihad’ remark recently, is now remaining silent over their own party man’s comments on the issue, which reveals the Marxist Party’s hypocrisy.

NEW DELHI, APR 13 (PTI): The Central Public Works Department will transplant 487 trees for the construction of an ‘Executive Enclave’ (EE) as part of the Central Vista redevelopment plan, according to official documents. The Executive Enclave will house the new Prime Minister’s Office, Cabinet Secretariat, India House and National Security Council Secretariat. According to a revised proposal for grant of environmental clearance to the Rs 1,381-crore project, the Central Public Works Department (CPWD) will maintain 1,022 trees at the site, so as to have a tree per 80 square metre of plot area as per the guidelines of the Union environment ministry. It said there are 807 trees at the site as compared to the earlier estimate of 784. In a meeting held on April 9, the Delhi State Expert Appraisal Committee (SEAC) recommended the revised proposal to the State Environment Impact Assessment Authority (SEIAA) for grant of environmental clearance. The SEAC had earlier raised concern over CPWD’s proposal to “remove and transplant” 630 trees from the site.

KOZHIKODE(KER), APR 13 (PTI): A recent interfaith marriage of a Muslim activist of the ruling CPI(M)’s youth wing DYFI, has stirred up a political storm after the relatives of the Christian bride alleged “love jihad”, with a senior left party leader supporting the charge, only to retract his statement later. As the issue snowballed into a major controversy, the Marxist party on Wednesday made it clear that there was nothing unnatural in interfaith marriages and the campaign of ‘love jihad’ was a creation of RSS and Sangh Parivar. Attacking the CPI(M) over the ‘love jihad’ issue, senior BJP leader and union minister V Muraleedhaaran said the Left party’s hypocrisy on the matter was exposed once again. that the Prime Minister had given the go-ahead to the National Educational Policy only after Hindi was made an optional language. The BJP Tamil Nadu unit president has lashed out against the Congress and said that the party had politicised the issue for the past 40 to 45 years and added that P. Chidambaram as Union Minister had stressed the need to give importance to Hindi language during a function at Hindi diwas during the UPA- II regime. He said that the DMK was part and parcel of the UPA government and had the ministers representing the party when Chidambaram as Union minister had mooted the idea to give importance to the Hindi language. Annamalai had also welcomed the suggestion of musician A.R. Rahman that Tamil could be the link language of the nation and added that stress must be given to develop the language.

Putin vows to pursue war as talks hit dead lock
Vladimir Putin with top Russian state officials.
M O S C OW, A P R 1 3 (AGENCIES): President Vladimir Putin said peace talks with Ukraine are “at a dead end” and vowed to continue Russia’s invasion as Kyiv accused Moscow of sabotaging the negotiations, reports Bloomberg. There’s been no word of progress for days in video-link peace talks after Ukraine accused Russian troops of carrying out war crimes including killing unarmed civilians in Bucha and other towns in the north. Western leaders have called for international investigations of the deaths. In his first public com-
ments on the alleged atrocities, Putin first compared them to U.S. attacks on cities like Raqqa in Syria and then called the Bucha claims “fake.” Russia’s almost sevenweek offensive is going “according to plan,” Putin said Tuesday at a joint press conference at the Vostochny Cosmodrome in the Russian Far East with Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko. Dialog continued between the two sides by video link after the last inperson meeting in Istanbul on Mar. 29. There’s been no public confirmation of
talks this week. Putin accused Ukraine of backing off earlier concessions, but Kyiv’s public position has not changed and it blames Russia for the lack of progress. ‘Difficult’ Talks “The talks are extremely difficult,” said the chief Ukrainian negotiator Mykhailo Podolyak, adding that Russia is “sticking to its traditional practice of publicly pressing on the negotiating process.” Putin said that without a peace deal, “the military operation will continue until its final completion and the tasks that were set at the start of the operation are achieved.” He told workers at the cosmodrome conflict with Ukraine was “inevitable” because of its close ties with the West. But while the Kremlin originally justified the offensive as needed to “de-militarize” and “de-Nazify” Ukraine by ousting its pro-Western democratically elected government, Putin said Tuesday the main goal is to “help” the people of Donbas.

Putin’s ‘ideologist’ placed New Pak govt directs interior ministry under house arrest in Moscow to renew Nawaz, Ishaq Dar’s passports
Vladislav Surkov
LOND ON, APRIL 13 (IANS): The man who ‘invented Putinism’ has been detained in Russia and is under house arrest, say reports in Moscow, Daily Mail reported. If confirmed, the move against Vladislav Surkov appears to show Vladimir Putin is turning on his inner circle, and also deep splits among his closest henchmen. Unconfirmed accounts say Putin’s ‘ideologist’ is being held in a wide-ranging criminal probe that has also seen the arrest of 150 FSB agents. The case evidently involves the alleged embezzlement of $5 billion by the secret services to create an undercover and intelligence network in Ukraine, Daily Mail reported. The shadowy Surkov, seen as crucial to Putin’s long-running electoral suc-
cess, was the man who encouraged him to believe Ukraine is not a real country. The 57-year-old is a former Kremlin insider, more recently a Putin point man in Ukraine. Before Putin sent troops into Ukraine, Surkov called for Ukraine, Belarus and the Baltic states to be annexed. The detention of senior FSB figure Col-General Sergei Beseda, 68, now held in grim Lefortovo jail, is seen as a linked case. Putin is said to be furious at intelligence failings in Ukraine after huge investment over many years to ensure Russian support in key places. Russian outlet Buninskaya Alleya reported: ‘More and more sources report that Vladislav Surkov is under house arrest. ‘Investigative measures have been carried out allegedly in the case of embezzlement in the Donbas since 2014... ‘It was Surkov who was the representative of the Russian President in Ukraine.’ Te l e g r a m c h a n n e l Druid reported: ‘According to our sources, Vladislav Surkov is under house arrest’, Daily Mail reported.
ISLAMABAD, APR 13 (PTI): Pakistan’s new government has directed the interior ministry to renew the passports of deposed ex-prime minister Nawaz Sharif and former finance minister Ishaq Dar, according to a media report on Wednesday. The development comes as a debate in the ruling Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) has begun on the return of the party supremo and the three-time prime minister Sharif ’s expected return from London after his younger brother Shehbaz Sharif became the new prime minister of the country. Quoting sources, Geo TV reported that the Pakistani High Commission in London has also been directed to start work on the renewal of the passports of the PML-N leaders. Several cor r uption cases had been launched by the previous government led by Imran Khan against the 72-year-old supremo of Pakistan Muslim League (Nawaz) since his ouster from office by the Supreme Court in July 2017 in the Panama Papers case.
Nawaz Sharif and Ishaq Dar
Nawaz Sharif left for London in 2019 after the Lahore High Court granted him four-week permission to go abroad for his treatment. He had given an undertaking to the Lahore High Court to return to Pakistan, citing his record to face the process of law and justice within four weeks or as soon as he is declared healthy and fit to travel by doctors. The previous Khan-led government had refused to renew Nawaz Sharif ’s passport after it expired in February last year, but theninterior minister Sheikh Rasheed had said if the PML-N supremo wanted to return, he could be issued a special certificate. Nawaz Sharif was given bail in the Al-Azizia Mills corruption case in
which he was serving sevenyear imprisonment in Lahore’s Kot Lakhpat jail. The court has declared him a proclaimed offender (PO) in the Toshakhana case. In December last year amid escalated political activities, a debate erupted over the rumours of the PML-N supremo’s possible return to Pakistan, but his party maintained that Nawaz would return after he has fully recovered. Although PML-N parliamentarian Javed Latif on Monday has claimed that Nawaz Sharif will return to the country after Eid which will be celebrated in the first week of May, the party spokesperson has asserted that nothing is final on his comeback till he is declared fit to travel by his doctors.

1 Palestinian killed, 31 injured by Israeli soldiers in West Bank
Israeli army forces stormed Nablus and three villages around the city to arrest Palestinians.
RAMALLAH, APRIL 13 (IANS): Israeli soldiers killed a Palestinian and injured 31 others on Wednesday morning during clashes near the northern West Bank city of Nablus, said medics and eyewitnesses. The Palestinian Ministry of Health said in a press statement that Mohammed Assaf, a 34-yearold lawyer, was killed after he had been shot in the chest, while 31 others were injured, including 11 by live ammunition. Eyewitnesses said that Israeli army forces stormed Nablus and three villages around the city to arrest Palestinians, who are wanted by the Israeli security forces, as fierce clashes broke out with dozens of Palestinian protestors, Xinhua news agency reported. Meanwhile, the Palestinian Red Crescent Society said that 17 were injured by Israeli soldiers, including 11 by live ammunition and six by rubber bullets, while
dozens suffered suffocation after inhaling teargas fired by the soldiers. The eyewitnesses said that the clashes came as Israeli soldiers conducted arrest raids and secured the restoration of a shrine in Nablus after it was vandalised twice by Palestinians in recent days. There has been no immediate Israeli army comment on the incidents in Nablus. However, Palestinian security sources said that the Israeli army conducts daily raids in cities, towns, and villages in the West Bank to arrest Palestinian activists. Tension between Israel and the Palestinians has been flaring in the West Bank and East Jerusalem over the past three weeks. On Monday, Palestinian presidential spokesman Nabil Abu Rudeineh warned that the Israeli escalation measures in the Palestinian territories would push the matters to “an uncontrollable situation.”

India is willing to commit up to another $2 billion in financial assistance to Sri Lanka while also supporting the island nation with food and fuel, five sources told Reuters, as New Delhi tries to regain ground lost to China in recent years. “We are definitely looking to help them out and are willing to offer more swap lines and loans,” said an Indian source aware of various discussions with Sri Lanka. A senior government source in New Delhi said Sri Lanka’s warning on Tuesday of defaulting on debt payments was a worry, but that “we can still give them up to $2 billion in swaps and support”.
Japan, US hold navy drills off Koreas B’desh sentences militants to gallows Tokyo, Apr 13 (AP): U.S. and Japanese warships, led by the USS Abraham Lincoln carrier strike group, are conducting their joint naval exercise in waters between Japan and the Korean Peninsula for the first time in five years, in a show of their close military alliance amid growing speculation of North Korea’s missile or nuclear testing later this week. The U.S. 7th Fleet and Japan’s Maritime Self-Defense Force said Wednesday they conducted a joint naval exercise at the Sea of Japan on Tuesday and Wednesday. It was the first time the U.S. aircraft carrier held the exercise in the area since 2017 and is seen as an apparent attempt to deter North Korea’s provocation. Defense experts have warned that North Korea may launch another missile or even conduct a nuclear test as early as this week when Pyongyang marks the birth anniversary of its founding leader Kim Il Sung. Tension is rising in the region ahead of an annual joint military exercise between the United States and South Korea. Japan has also stepped up joint military exercises with its closest ally, the United States, as well as regional partners in recent years amid rising concern over China’s increasingly assertive military actions in the regional seas. Japan’s Chief Cabinet Secretary Hirokazu Matsuno told reporters that the

ongoing joint exercise is “aimed at strengthening military cooperation between Japan and the United States, and is not keeping in mind a specific country. … We will continue to strengthen deterrence and response capability of the Japan-U.S. alliance and to do utmost for the defense of our country.” Details of the exercise will be released by the Japanese Defense Ministry “when the situation allows a disclosure.” Japan’s Maritime Self-Defense Force said its destroyer JS Kongo and JS Inazuma, as well as Japanese F-2 fighters joined USS Abraham Lincoln carrier strike group “in order to strengthen the capability of Japan-US alliance for effective deterrence and response.” “Our works contribute to the regional peace and stability,” the Japanese navy tweeted. A Japanese Maritime Self-Defense official said they cannot provide specific dates and locations of the ongoing joint exercise until it’s finished. Tension has risen in the area over North Korea’s spate of missile tests this
year, including its first intercontinental ballistic missile launch in more than four years.

The Government is taking the “emergency measures”, pending full discussions with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) from whom it has sought help, only to prevent a further deterioration of the country’s financial position, the Finance Ministry said. A comprehensive debt restructuring programme was now “inescapable”, it noted in a statement. The decision comes on the heels of two other key policy changes. Sri Lanka floated the rupee early March, allowing for a stark depreciation of its value — it was nearly 320 against a US dollar on Tuesday. More recently, the Cen-

Korda upsets Alcaraz in 3-hr Monte Carlo battle
Sebastian Korda MONTE CARLO, APR 13 (REUTERS): Unseeded American Sebastian Korda mastered the windy conditions in Monte Carlo to topple Miami Open champion Carlos Alcaraz 7-6(2) 6-7(5) 6-3 on Wednesday and advance to the last 16 of the Masters tournament. World number 11 Alcaraz, 18, suffered his third defeat of the year in an entertaining battle with Korda that lasted just over three hours, with both players struggling for rhythm. The 21-year-old Kor-
da raced to a 4-2 lead in the opening set before Alcaraz fought back and twice served for the set, but was broken both times and was outplayed in the tiebreak. Alcaraz pinched the second set on tiebreak and forced the decider, where Korda rallied from a break down and moved 5-3 ahead before serving for the win. “After losing to a Spaniard in Indian Wells and serving for it, it was nice to get a victory today,” said Korda, who pushed Rafa Nadal to a third-set
tiebreak at the California tournament. “I had to just stay calm and believe in my returning... Every time you’d throw up the ball, it would move around. It was super tough to serve today but I’m super happy with the way I handled myself. “I did get a lot of good practice on my return, but I don’t know what to say. It was a crazy match!” Korda will face the winner of the tie between Indian Wells winner Taylor Fritz and Croatian Marin Cilic, which will be played later on Wednesday. World number three Alexander Zverev will take on Federico Delbonis while other top 10 seeds including Andrey Rublev, Casper Ruud and Felix Auger-Aliassime are also in action. KO H I M A , A P R 1 3 (NPN): Renowned Tenyidie scholar, writer, teacher and retired bureaucrat, Vizonyü Liezietsu has urged youths to preserve their mother tongue as most of the local dialects even in Nagaland faced the threat of going extinct. Addressing footballers of team Kohima district, comprising mostly of players from Tenyidie speaking villages, at their coaching camp, Tsiesema, during a skill training programme organised by Kohima District Football Association (KDFA), Liezietsu urged the players to give importance to their mother tongue. He said vernacular of every region were the actual wealth and treasure of people of that region
and likewise 10 Naga tribes having a common ancestry speak Tenyidie. Liezietsu pointed out that despite Tenyidie being the mother language of those Tenyimi tribes, they all have their respective dialects which varies widely and often have little to no resemblance with Tenyidie. While encouraging the players to respect their own local dialects he advocated on the need to speak and learn the standardized Tenyidie language which has the capability to provide more scopes in the long run besides preserving it for posterity. He said like any other language Tenyidie also has its own share of limitations and so there was a need to preserve it. Notably, all Naga languages have been listed as endangered language
Saina Nehwal NBA: Irving shines as Nets advance deserved better
Kyrie Irving tries to shoot against Cleveland Cavaliers. NEW YORK, APR 13 (AFP): Kyrie Irving produced a near-flawless display of shooting to fire the Brooklyn Nets into the NBA playoffs on Tuesday with a 115-108 victory over the Cleveland Cavaliers. Irving drained 12 of 15 from the field to finish with 34 points and 12 assists for a victory that sees Brooklyn into a best-of-seven series against the second-seeded Boston Celtics, starting Sunday. On the evidence of Tuesday’s performance, Irving will be brimming with confidence as he prepares to face his former club in Boston this weekend. The 30-year-old seventime All-Star was perfect from the field through the first three quarters, only missing his first shot early in K Y M C
the fourth quarter. It was the latest in a series of impressive displays from the unvaccinated Irving, who was ruled out of the vast majority of Brooklyn’s home games this season due to Covid-19 regulations in New York. “We only speak positivity on this entire journey thus far,” Irving said after Tuesday’s win. “It’s been ups and it’s been downs, but we’ve stayed together, remained resilient. “We’ve been through a lot of changes and we’ve evolved since we came out of the All-Star break. It feels good but we know that the job isn’t finished.” Irving was backed by another commanding display from Kevin Durant, who finished with 25 points, 11 assists and five rebounds.
Durant was a composed presence throughout, notably helping Brooklyn reestablish a 10-point cushion with back-to-back buckets after Cleveland -- who at one stage had trailed by 22 points -- cut the Nets’ lead to just six points late in the fourth quarter. “That’s as advertised,” Brooklyn coach Steve Nash said of Durant and Irving’s performances. “They’re superstars. That’s what top, top players do.” Brooklyn led from start to finish, exploding out of the blocks to score 40 points in the first quarter to open up a 20-point lead that Cleveland never managed to recover from. Nash however was satisfied that Brooklyn had been able to close out the win as Cleveland chipped
away at the lead. “You have to be prepared for that in basketball,” said Nash. “Anxiety is part of the game, stress is part of the game. You have to embrace that and continue to compete and continue to find clarity and conviction. “We’ll find lots of positives and also lots of room for improvement... Every day is a day for us to learn about ourselves and how we can improve on both ends of the floor.” While the Nets look forward to the playoffs, the Cavaliers will face the winner of the other Eastern Conference play-in game between the Charlotte Hornets and Atlanta Hawks for a place in the first round of the postseason. In Tuesday’s other play-in game, Anthony Edwards and D’Angelo Russell led the Minnesota Timberwolves to a hard-fought victory over the Los Angeles Clippers to clinch the seventh seed in the Western Conference. Edwards scored 30 points and Russell added 29 as the Wolves won 109-104 to set up a first round playoff series against the secondseeded Memphis Grizzlies. A pulsating clash at Minneapolis’s Target Center was briefly interrupted in the second quarter after a woman reported to be an animal rights activist attempted to glue herself to the court in protest. Security staff removed the woman after a few minutes.
deal: Kashyap
NEW DELHI, APR 13 (AGENCIES): India’s star shuttler Saina Nehwal is still one of the strongest contenders for a medal in the major events including Commonwealth Games (CWG) and the Asian Games, said Par upalli Kashyap, Saina’s husband and occasional travelling coach for her. “Definitely, she is targeting qualification for the next Paris Olympics,” he said. “It is disappointing that a wrong impression is being given about her decision to not take part in the selection trials from April 15 to 20 for the CWG, Asiad, Thomas and Uber Cups. She felt she needed at least four weeks time to prepare after the recent European tour to return to the competitive circuit and she is very keen to avoid any injury scare,” explained Kashyap in a chat with Sportstar. “It is sad that though she has written to the BAI (Badminton Association of India) on April 1, immediately after the selection trials schedule was announced, she is yet to get any response from anyone,” Kashyap said. “No one bothered even to talk to her. Certainly, not the way to treat someone like Saina, who deserved a better deal,” he added.
by the United Nations Education, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). He further called on all educated people from the Tenyidie speaking communities to learn the vernacular language. According to him, reading the Tenyidie Bible, books published by the Ura Academy (UA) -a Tenyidie literary society established in 1971, and participation at cultural and social gatherings would greatly help speakers to learn and preserve the language. H e o b s e r ve d t h a t while it was important to learn the language at any point of time, he highlighted that learning the language the right way and at an early age was paramount. With the National Education Policy (NEP) set to
be rolled out soon, Liezietsu said that one’s own language would be made a compulsory subject. He exuded confidence that Tenyidie as a language would also soon be recognized by the government. About 20 players are currently camping at the KDFA coaching camp since Monday. Besides

Punjab beat Mumbai Indians by 12 runs
PUNE, APR 13 (PTI): Mumbai Indians inched closer towards elimination after setting themselves up for their first win, only to slump to their fifth defeat on trot as Punjab Kings won a high-scoring IPL thriller by 12 runs here on Wednesday. A target of 199 looked imminently chaseable when teenagers Dewald Brevis (49 off 25 balls) and NT Tilak Varma (36 off 20 balls) were at the crease but Punjab bowlers did well enough to restrict MI to 186 for nine at the end of 20 overs. Odean Smith (4/30 in 4 overs) redeemed himself after the horror last two balls against Gujarat Titans as he got two wickets in the final over for Punjab. For Mumbai, eight wins in nine games with this kind of bowling attack looks near impossible. However, if there was one positive, it was Brevis’s batting. It took eight balls before Brevis could get going as he unleashed a cover drive and a straight drive off Arshdeep Singh to tee off.
Shikhar Dhawan and Mayank Agarwal play a shots. (PTI) He was finally out one short of his maiden IPL fifty but not before leaving everyone yearning for more. At the other end was Tilak, who had already made an impression, showed great game sense by
letting Brevis do the heavy lifting before he himself hit some marvellous sixes including an audacious slash over point off Smith. Suryakumar Yadav (43 off 30 balls) wasn’t in best rhythm and Kieron Pollard (10, 11 balls) season just got
Legendary boxer Estelle Mossely becomes ambassador for IBA Women’s World Boxing LAUSANNE (SWITZERLAND), APR 13 (IANS): 2016 World Boxing Champion Estelle Mossely will be the ambassador of the upcoming IBA Women’s World Boxing Championships 2022 in Istanbul, Turkey. The French boxer will be present at the opening ceremony of the event. In 2016, Mossely was crowned AIBA Women’s World Boxing Champion and then went on to win the coveted Olympic gold medal in Rio a few months later. She has been at the top of the sport for a number of years and has beaten the best in her division consistently, proving that she is one of the best female fighters in recent memory. “I am really looking forward to being ringside at the Women’s World Boxing Championships in Istanbul,” said Mossely. “As a champion of this event, I know the sacrifices that need to be made to win. This year, the level of competition is very high in all 12 weight categories, which shows the tremendous growth of women’s boxing over the last few years. I would like to thank the IBA for inviting me to be a part of this major event. Winning this competition in 2016 is a memory I will never forget, so to return as
an ambassador is an amazing feeling.” Chairwoman of the IBA Women’s Committee Amanda Coulson said, “We are delighted to have Estelle Mossely as an Ambassador for the upcoming Women’s World Boxing Championships. She has elevated the level of women’s boxing to heights not seen before. Fans of our beloved sport will always hold a special
place in their hearts for Estelle. Her accomplishments speak for themselves, she has won all there is to win whilst carrying herself with class and grace throughout her illustrious career. We are looking forward
to seeing the evolution of women’s boxing as we seek to promote the sport globally.” As with the Men’s Boxing World Championships last year, for the first time ever, this year’s IBA Women’s World Boxing Championships will have prize money. The prize money will be equal to that of the men’s competition. IBA has made it a priority to promote gender equality and the development of women’s boxing. It is vital to make sure that world-class athletes who fight to not only entertain the fans, but also to make their dreams a reality, are fairly rewarded for their efforts and have the stability required to train at the highe s t level.

from bad to worse. Finally, it was Surya, who took matters in his own hands with a six over extra cover off Vaibhav Arora and then opened the face to slash it over backward point for a six as 33 were required off
last three overs. However it was Kagiso Rabada, who removed Surya in the 19th over, caught by Smith in the deep after which there wasn’t much resistance left from MI. Earlier, skipper Mayank Agarwal and veteran Shikhar Dhawan struck their first half-centuries of the season as Punjab Kings rode on a fine start from the openers to post a challenging 198 for five. Bumrah’s toe-crusher which yorked the dangerous Liam Livingstone helped MI to keep things under check with 99 runs coming of the last 10 overs. Agarwal, who wasn’t having a great run before this game, brought his customary square off the wicket shots on the off-side and straight lofts of spinners to score 52 off 32 balls. Dhawan took his own time while playing the second fiddle but still kept up the tempo letting Agarwal go for the whole hog during their stand. But he did accelerate after that before getting out for 70 off 50 balls.

IPL 2022: MS Dhoni plots Kohli’s dismissal; Twitter calls him ‘GOAT’
NEW DELHI, APR 13 (AGENCIES): Defending champions Chennai Super Kings won their first match of IPL 2022, when they beat Royal Challengers Bangalore by 23 runs on Tuesday. CSK posted a mammoth 216/4 on the board and RCB needed its star batters, Faf du Plessis and Virat Kohli, to get a big score and lay the foundation for the chase. But that didn’t happen as captain du Plessis was sent back in the third over itself, NDTV reported. This brought Virat Kohli to the middle and former CSK captain MS Dhoni, who has been aiding new skipper Ravindra Jadeja with field placements from time to time, immedi- ately swung into action. Dhoni has played very closely with Kohli for more than a decade now and knows how the batter responds to certain deliveries. Keeping this in mind, Dhoni put a fielder at deep square leg for the attempted pull shot, something Virat deploys quite often against the short delivery. As it turned out, Kohli played the pull shot on the first delivery of the fifth over bowled by Mukesh Choudhary and was duly caught at deep mid wicket by Shivam Dube. The entire process of Dhoni setting the field for Kohli was explained
in commentary later. The loss of two quick wickets jolted RCB and they never found their way into the chase, although the middle order did well to take the team closer to the target and saved the net run rate. MS Dhoni fans have since taken to twitter to laud him. Dhoni has captained CSK to four IPL titles and is the only international captain ever to have won all three global ICC titles. Here are some of the tweets Heisenberg @internetumpire Apr 12, 2022 “Can’t think of anyone more safe than Jadeja to be under the catch of Dinesh Karthik. To be under the catch of a guy who’s been batting at 34(13) and take it safely is no easy at all. Just the sheer pressure makes one tremble. Moment of the match for me.” Neeche Se Topper @NeecheSeTopper: “that field placement was even more brilliant. not an inch of error.” “that field placement was even more brilliant. not an inch of error.” ThatBrahminGuy (@DrAtul1968): “This is why Dhoni is the GOAT. He also set perfect field for Virat.”
UEFA CL: Villarreal shock Bayern; Real beat Chelsea B E R L I N / M A D R I D, APRIL 13 (IANS): A late equaliser from substitute Samuel Chukwueze helped Villarreal draw 1-1 with Bayern Munich and book the semifinals after moving 2-1 on aggregate in the Champions League quarterfinals on Tuesday night. Real Madrid also qualified for the semifinals despite having one foot out of the door after a brave Chelsea fightback in the second leg of their quarterfinal. The German giants started highly motivated, knowing that they had to overturn a 1-0 deficit from the first leg, while Villarreal defended deep and lurked for their counterattack opportunities. Bayern controlled the proceedings on the pitch but lacked accuracy in front of the target as only Jamal Musiala’s header forced Villarreal goalkeeper Geronimo Rulli into action once at the half-hour mark, Xinhua reports. The German champions lived dangerously as the visitors from Spain were a menace on a fast break and Gerard Moreno sent the first warning before the break after rattling the side netting from a tight angle. Julian Nagelsmann’s men came out with their guns blazing after the restart as Dayot Upamecano pulled over the target from
a promising position before Robert Lewandowski eventually opened the scoring after slotting home a loose ball from the edge of the box in the 52nd minute. Even though the Bavarians gained momentum, they had to wait until the 72nd minute to produce their next chance as unmarked Thomas Muller headed narrowly wide from a central position. Villarreal’s counterattack strategy paid off in the closing stages as Gerard Moreno’s pass into the path allowed Chukwueze to stun Bayern goalkeeper Manuel Neuer from close range against the run of the Villarreal players celebrate their victory over Real Madrid. Real hold on after brave Chelsea fightback Chelsea led 3-0 on the night and were 10 minutes away from going through after losing the first leg 3-1 before Rodrygo took the game into extra-time where Karim Benzema scored the goal that took Real Madrid through on a dramatic night in the Santiago Bernabeu. Chelsea coach Thomas Tuchel said after his side’s 3-1 defeat in Stamford Bridge a week ago that his side had no chance of getting back into the tie, but it seems the coach was bluffing as his side tore into Real Madrid.
Seventeen minutes into the game Mason Mount ran onto Timo Wer ner’s through ball before running into the Madrid area and beating Thibaut Courtois with a confident finish, Xinhua reports. With no away goals rule, that opened the tie up completely and Chelsea looked increasingly confident, pushing Real Madrid deeper and deeper as the half progressed. The reigning champions’ second goal came four minutes into the second half when Antonio Rudiger climbed highest
to head Mount’s corner beyond Courtois’ reach to level the tie. Real Madrid had done little in attack, but just after the goal, Reece James made a timely challenge to block Karim Benzema. Benzema then set up Fede Valverde, who fired just wide, before Marcos Alonso had the ball in the net only for the VAR to rule it out for handball. Werner did make it 3-0 on the night in the 75th minute, latching onto Matteo Kovacic’s pass before beating Casemiro and David Alaba and unleashing
a shot that took a deflection on its way into the goal. That made it 4-3 to Chelsea on aggregate, but Rodrygo frustrated their comeback with a cool finish after a move involving Marcelo and Luka Modric in the 80th minute to take the tie into extra time. Six minutes into the first period of extra time, Vinicius Jr and Benzema finally combined effectively with Vinicius after Chelsea gave the ball away allowing the winger to cross for the striker to score his 12th European goal of the campaign.
