Sri Lanka declares state of emergency

President flees to DIMAPUR MLAS DEMAND EVICTION AND ACTION AGAINST ERRING OFFICERS Maldives; protesters Staff Reporter storm PM office D I M A P U R , J U LY 1 3 (NPN): Nagaland Post has been highlighting the causes and factors that have affected economic development of Dimapur for the past decade but the state government appears to have turned a blind eye. Dimapur railway station, which contributes the second highest revenue after Guwahati to the Northeast Frontier Railways(NFR), can no longer grow. Dimapur railway station cannot expand because lands are encroached and which has driven NFR to despair that the case is hopeless and so has set its eyes on other alternative points in nearby Karbi Anglong. Karbi Anglong could even steal a march over Dimapur when new railway development projects are implemented in Diphu, Dhansiri and Bokajan. Nagaland Post had recently reported how various development projects in Diphu, the district headquarter of Karbi Anglong district in Assam, was on full throttle. This is because land is ensured for development by the Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council (KAAC). It may be recalled that the Chief Public Relations Officer (CPRO), NFR Lumding Division, Sabyasachi De, told Nagaland Post recently that 30.283 hectares out of 53.806 hectares of railway lands have been encroached in Dimapur. Dey also lamented that no appreciable assistance has been provided by the state government or district authorities in Dimapur in demarcation of land boundaries, or re-

State logs 11 fresh cases of Covid-19 DIMAPUR, JUL 13 (NPN): Nagaland recorded 11 fresh positive cases of Covid-19 on Wednesday taking the total caseload to 35566, according to health department’s daily bulletin. Of the 11 cases, four were reported from Dimapur, three from Kohima, one from Longleng and three from Peren. With total of 90 total samples tested in the last 24 hours, today’s sample positivity rate stands at 12.22%. Currently, there are 42 active cases in the state. While two patients (one from Dimapur and one from Peren) have recuperated from the virus taking the recoveries to 33,260.

moval of encroachers from railway land. It may also be pointed out that the NFR has not uttered a word over encroachment of land by three mandirs within Dimapur railway station. These structures are at the centre of the railway station and not at the periphery. When Nagaland Post contacted MLAs of Dimapur- Moatoshi Longkumer (Dimapur-II) and Azheto Zhimomi (Dimapur-III),both legislators were firm that development cannot be allowed to be hijacked by encroachers in the larger interest of the people of Nagaland. The MLAs also maintained that the state government should not hesitate to evict all encroachers and action be taken against officials who have issued pattas on these encroached lands. Azheto Zhimomi: The veteran legislator from Dimapur-III, maintained that the district administration

should consult with elected representatives in handling grievances and complains of public. He suggested officials involved in issuing land pattas to encroachers without proper verification and examinations should be identified and summoned for questioning. “It is insincerity of the land resource department for issuing the patta without proper investigation”, Zhimomi added. Azheto also disclosed that he had succeeded in having five pattas cancelled that were issued by land revenue department when he was chairman of DPDB Dimapur district. Without naming the officers, Azheto revealed that the pattas were issued by the then EAC Chümoukedima and Revenue Officer without the administrative approval of the state government. Zhimomi, stated that he was ever ready to join hands with all three MLAs of Dimapur (I, II & III) to evict encroachers if allega-

tion made by NFR were proved in the court of law. He also demanded that all those involved in issuing the patta, without proper screening and investigation, should be penalised or suspended after being given show cause notice to explain why land pattas were issued without proper screening. “It is the duty of state government, district administration, land records and concerned department, not to issue pattas without proper screening and investigation”, Zhimomi said. On the other hand, Zhimomi said that state government or officials involved in issuing the illegal pattas should be the ones compensating the encroachers. Moatoshi: Meanwhile, MLA of Dimapur-II, Moatoshi Longkumer backed Azheto Zhimomi’s view that the rule of law should be applied with respect of encroachers of railway lands in Dimapur.

ACKNOWLEDGEMENT

Saying that we feel sad would be too shallow. Words just can’t explain how we’re feeling; so low, so empty. It hasn’t sunk in; no, not yet. We can’t believe you‘re gone, gone so soon. How we wish we’d never woken up to see this agonising day! But we know, we’ll have to move on. We know, we’ll have to let go of the pain, knowing sure that the heavens rejoices to embrace you for eternity. And rightly so, your life deserves to be celebrated again and again here in our hearts. Mom, this goodbye is going to be painfully hard and long. But knowing that we will reunite again in heaven, gives us the reason to smile and move on. Like you always have been; and constantly told us, ‘We will be Strong’. Rest In Peace, Our Beloved Mom

‘If elected, will ensure CAA is not implemented’

GUWAHATI, JUL 13 (PTI): Opposition presidential candidate Yashwant Sinha on Wednesday said that if he is elected, he will ensure that the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) is not implemented. Interacting with opposition lawmakers of Assam, Sinha said the BJP-led government has not been able to implement the CAA so far as it was “foolishly drafted” in a hurry. “Citizenship is a major issue for Assam, and the government wanted to bring in the Act across the country but has not been able to do so yet,” he said. “Earlier, the government gave the excuse of COVID, but even now they have not been able to implement it because it is an Act foolishly drafted in a hurry,” he added. Sinha alleged that the Constitution was in danger not from any outside force,

but from those in power. “This presidential election is of special significance as it is a fight to save Constitution,” he asserted. “If I am in Rashtrapati Bhavan, I will ensure that CAA is not implemented,” he said. Sinha said he was compelled to leave the BJP in 2018 after realising that the present leadership has taken “a completely wrong” path. Later, speaking to reporters, he alleged that every institution of the country is being subverted by the ruling party and its

government. “Agencies like the ED, CBI, Income Tax department and even the governor’s offices are being used to target opposition leaders, to engineer defections and topple opposition-run state governments,” he claimed. “The ruling party has embarked on an evil design to communally polarise India’s multi-faith society, and its agenda of one nation, one party, one ruler is meant to convert democratic India into an imitator of Communist China,” he said. Sinha said he was dismayed that NDA’s presidential candidate Droupadi Murmu has not addressed a press conference yet. “People do not know what she stands for. I have great personal regard for Droupadi Murmu, but this election is not about persons and their identities but about their commitment to Constitution,” he said.

2007-17 and before that had served as India’s envoy to several countries including Iran, rejected this charge also and said that his work as ambassador to Iran was at all times within the knowledge of the government of the day. Rebutting the BJP’s claim of inviting Mirza, Ansari said it is a known fact that invitations to foreign dignitaries by the VicePresident of India are on the advice of the government generally through the Ministry of External Affairs. BJP spokesperson Bhatia also slammed the Congress, which was in power between 2004-14, and asked its leaders Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi to come

clean on the allegations. He claimed that Congress can go to any extent in its “petty and ugly politics and compromise” national interest. Hitting back, the Congress strongly condemned the “insinuations and innuendos” by the BJP against party president Sonia Gandhi and the former vice president, saying it amounts to “character assassination of the worst form”. Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh said in a statement that the levels that Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his party colleagues will stoop to debase public debate is staggering. “It reflects sickness of mind and lack of any form of integrity whatsoever,”

LU C K N OW, J U L 1 3 (PTI): BSP supremo Mayawati on Wednesday accused the BJP of confusing people on the issue of Population control and deviating from “real priority.” She was apparently referring to Uttar Pradesh C h i e f M i n i s t e r Yo g i Adityanath’s statement on Monday, who said that population “imbalance” in the country can lead to anarchy. “At a time, when the people are limiting their needs and are forced to lead a stressful life singed by extreme poverty and rising unemployment, is it wise of BJP to confuse people with long term issues like population control?” said Bahujan Samaj Party chief in a tweet in Hindi from her official handle. “Population control is a long-term policy issue, which needs more awareness than law, but instead of paying attention to the real priority of t h e c o u n t r y, t h e B J P governments are choosing devious and controversial issues. “In such a situation how can the best of public interest, the countr y’s interest be possible? People are sad and restless,” she said in another tweet.

MUMBAI, JUL 13 (AGENCIES): Cracks in Maharashtra’s erstwhile ruling coalition Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) became visible today with Congress’s senior leader Milind Deora taking a hard line over the coming civic elections in Mumbai. Accusing alliance partner Shiv Sena of gerrymandering -- redrawing wards to reap benefit in elections -- he indicated that the party has not maintained coalition dharma. The Congress, he added, is “ready to walk out” if its interests are not looked after. “If the Congress fighting for its rights is a risk to MVA, we are ready to take the risk... If someone has violated coalition dharma, the Congress is ready to walk out,” Deora said in an exclusive interview to

“There is no accountability in the BMC right now and democratic elections are needed. The redrawing of wards has been done to suit the interests of the Shiv Sena,” said Deora, who was recently appointed an observer for the assembly elections in Gujarat, due later this year.

NDTV. Deora -- who has been critical of the Shiv Sena even when the Congress was sharing power in the ruling alliance -- has written to the state’s new Chief Minister Eknath Shinde and his Deputy Devendra Fadnavis, accusing the Sena of gerrymandering wards. The Brihanmumbai Corporation, dominated by the Sena, is the country’s richest civic body.

AURANGABAD, JUL 13 (PTI): Amid a row over the national emblem installed atop the new Parliament building in Delhi, its sculptor Sunil Deore said the sculpture should be seen from a distance and from the same angle as the original version at Sarnath is viewed. The controversy over the national emblem atop the new Parliament building erupted on Tuesday with the opposition accusing the government of giving a “ferocious” look to the sculpture and insulting the symbol, while the BJP dismissed it as yet another “conspiracy” to target Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Modi had on Monday unveiled the cast of the national emblem on top of the new Parliament building. The new statue is an adaptation of an ancient sculpture ‘Lion Capital of Ashoka’ at Sarnath in Uttar Pradesh, dating back to 250 BC. Its sculptor Deore, who is based in Aurangabad, claimed that he has made the replica of the emblem

based on its original version, and added that the new sculpture should be viewed from a distance. “The original structure is 3.5 feet, while the height of the new one is seven meters. The photo (of the one atop Parliament) which has gone viral on social media is shot from the ground level angle. But if it is clicked in the manner that shows it parallel to the ground, we can see that it was copied from the national emblem,” he told a news channel. “I am an artist. What sort of expressions people look for I cannot tell...I studied the original model, made a small replica of it initially and a bigger one later. I have made the sculpture only after a detailed study and by following the routine methodology. I had no purpose to show any expressions. I did what is authentic,” Deore said. People should see the emblem atop the new Parliament from the same angle as the original sculpture of Sarnath is viewed, he said.

Jaswinder allegedly helped Jagjeet remove the tags on the bags which contained the firearms. The customs officers intercepted them while they were moving to the exit gate and found the guns. In his remarks, Bhatia said if Congress leaders Sonia and Rahul Gandhi besides the then vice president remain silent on the questions raised by the ruling party, it will amount to their admission to these “sins”. “He took the information from Ansari and it was used against India,” Bhatia alleged, adding that Mirza was also invited to a seminar on the issue of terrorism. “A person who is sharing information with the ISI is invited to come to India. Was this the Congress’ policy to end terrorism? “This is the party’s poisonous mindset. Our government has resolved to root out terrorism. On the other hand, this is the Congress mindset,” he said.

NEW DELHI, JUL (AGENCIES): The customs department at Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport arrested an Indian couple returning from Vietnam after they were found to be in possession of 45 handguns worth Rs 22.5 lakh. The accused were identified as Jagjeet Singh and his wife Jaswinder Kaur. The couple allegedly confessed to previously smuggling 25 guns from Turkey worth Rs 12.5 lakhs, the officials said. The officials handed over their infant daughter, who was travelling along with them, to her grandmother. Customs commissioner Zubair Kamili said that the family arrived from Vietnam on July 11. In a series of tweets, Sappal also referred to a video of Mirza in which he is heard saying that when he was invited to a seminar in 2010, Ansari was the ‘naib sadar’ (vice president). In his statement, Ansari said, “I had inaugurated the Conference on Terrorism, on December 11, 2010, the ‘International Conference of Jurists on International Terrorism and Human Rights’. As is the normal practice, the list of invitees would have been drawn by the organisers. I never invited him or met him.” On the BJP’s charge of having harmed the country’s interests when he was its envoy to Iran, the former vice president said his work as ambassador to Iran was at all times within the knowledge of the government of the day. He said he is bound by the commitment to national security in such matters and will refrain from commenting on them. “The Govern-

Citing Mirza’s claims, Bhatia said, “People of India are giving you so much respect and you are betraying the country. Isn’t this treason? Sonia Gandhi, Rahul and Hamid Ansari should come out and reply to this.” Bhatia also claimed that Mirza in his interview had said that Ansari invited him five times to India during 2005-11. NEW DELHI, JUL 13 (PTI): The BJP on Wednesday accused former vice president Hamid Ansari of inviting to India a Pakistani journalist who has claimed to have spied for the ISI, but Ansari dismissed the charge as a “litany of falsehood” and said he never met or invited him. Addressing a press conference here, BJP spokesperson Gaurav Bhatia cited purported claims of the Pakistani journalist, Nusrat Mirza, to allege that Ansari shared many “sensitive and highly classified” information with him. Emerald turn red

ri Lanka, also known as the emerald island and rightly so because it was a paradise of tourism till a few weeks back was plunged into its worst ever crisis as hyper inflation turned it into an uninhabitable place. Every one likes a scapegoat rightly or wrongly and in this, mobs across Sri Lanka who appear to have taken over the island nation are blaming the Rajpakasa brothers for all the ills.It is true that Gotbaya Rajpaksas and his family members who were dominating political power in Sri Lanka have been largely responsible for the economic hardships faced by the island nation today. The problem with the island nation is that the civil war against the LTTE which had paralysed the nation, had cost the nation very dear in terms of scarce resources. The Rajpakas- Gortbaya and Mahinda- have dominated politics in Sri Lanka since 2005. Sri Lanka, with an economy valued at 80 billion, is holding a total external debt of 51 billion, of which it has to repay 7 billion every fiscal year for the next four years. It has already defaulted on 78 million external debt. With a meagre 50 million foreign currency reserve holding, it is unlikely to be able to meet its debt servicing obligations to foreign creditors.95% of government revenue will go towards only debt servicing. The problem is likely to be further aggravated as its import bill exceeds its exports by 3 billion annually, popular annual tax cuts have reduced revenue collection by 1.4 billion, tourism industry accounting for 1/10th of GDP is now down to under 1% of GDP, there’s 50% drop in food grain production, and earnings from tea and rubber exports are heavily reduced. Sri Lanka is one example of Chinese largesse that has only multiplied the problems. Even as Mahindda drove Sri Lanka towards triumph in the Eelam War, he initiated a giant programme to extricate his country from the economic morass engendered by years of conflict. The country’s traditional multilateral lenders had tightened norms since 1997, when Sri Lanka was deemed to have become a lower-middle income nation. Few private-sector investors were willing to risk their cash betting on a war-torn nation, either. Long before the new tide of Chinese investment washed over Sri Lanka under Mahinda, it was clear the projects he was promoting had weak foundations. To help its debt repayments, Sri Lanka found itself compelled to grant a 99-year lease on the port to China Merchants Port in 2017, in return for an $1.1 billion. Sri Lanka had borrowed over $3 billion from China but mismanagement and corruption and crony capitalism only added to the rising debt woes. The government used that money, until its recent bankruptcy, to service debts to China, and other lenders. With the island nation no longer able to repay loans and having exhausted its foreign exchange reserves there was foreign currency to buy fuel of import food items and as a result, prices shot up almost ten times. This only sparked mobocracy where the rioters are calling the shots. Since early part of June, people in Sri Lanka were left with no option but to take desperate measures even if they were futile. The mob violence directed against the Rajpaksas will not save Sri Lanka even if they resigned.

DailyDevotion The Price of the Vision In the year that King Uzziah died, I saw the Lord… —Isaiah 6:1 Our soul’s personal history with God is often an account of the death of our heroes. Over and over again God has to remove our friends to put Himself in their place, and that is when we falter, fail, and become discouraged. Let me think about this personally— when the person died who represented for me all that God was, did I give up on everything in life? Did I become ill or disheartened? Or did I do as Isaiah did and see the Lord? My vision of God is dependent upon the condition of my character. My character determines whether or not truth can even be revealed to me. Before I can say, “I saw the Lord,” there must be something in my character that conforms to the likeness of God. Until I am born again and really begin to see the kingdom of God, I only see from the perspective of my own biases. What I need is God’s surgical procedure— His use of external circumstances to bring about internal purification. Your priorities must be God first, God second, and God third, until your life is continually face to face with God and no one else is taken into account whatsoever. Your prayer will then be, “In all the world there is no one but You, dear God; there is no one but You.” Keep paying the price. Let God see that you are willing to live up to the vision.

Post-mortem

In Sri Lanka, India’s mantra should be ‘assist and publicise’

W

hile the Central Bank of Sri Lanka’s 7 percent increase in repo and reverse repo rates may appear spectacular when compared to the 25 to 50 basis point changes one may be accustomed to ordinarily, even this may prove too little, too late to curb the galloping inflation that the island nation is witnessing. Compounding worries include the acute fuel shortage, the costs of which would be mostly borne by the fishing community. From a purely textbook standpoint, the current economic distress is because of the depletion of foreign exchange reserves due to a balance of payments crisis. A closer inspection must, however, determine the causes and circumstances which have

led Sri Lanka’s economy to the proverbial brink. While broad-br ushed critiques based on economic mismanagement by successive regimes are often alluded to, specific reasons for the severe downturn in the country’s fortunes lie at the intersection of external debt-driven populism, the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, and the political ham-fistedness of the Rajapaksa clan. According to the country’s Finance Minister Ali Sabry, Sri Lanka requires US $3 billion in foreign assistance within half a year to restart essential supplies like food and medicines. For perspective, analysts at J.P. Morgan estimate Sri Lanka’s gross debt servicing at US $7 billion this year, with current account deficit at

Opinion of youth in improving quality of education

W

e study concepts but we seldom apply them in real-life. Think about this – we have all studied Economics in school but our sole purpose was to mug up the concepts and parrot it in order to get the most marks. That is the grim reality that has besieged Indian education today. Something that desperately requires change, and that takes me back to Economics and the basic concept we all were introduced to in school – “demand and supply”. Unless we demand something, no one will bother supplying it. Which is why, it is extremely important that the youth become more vocal about the education system. The reality may be quite different but we have all invariably become the silent consumers of the education system. Time and again, controversies erupt as one political party changes the narrative that is being taught to the students. And what do we the students do? We simply go back to class, mug up the changed concepts and hope to sail through the subject. Critical reasoning is at best absent and at worst, discouraged. Even when we buy inane things for ourselves, we pay attention to the quality, we read the labels. Why are we not demanding the same when it comes to education? Selecting the best or the most suitable teachers is not enough, it is important to keep investing in them. Our teachers need both time and resource to improve their craft. They need resources and funds to undertake research. In addition, they need a decent salary so that they don’t feel the need to earn money on the sides and can devote their time to skill-development and capacity-building. Our pedagogy is outdated. We are still relying on the lecture method without looking at the best-practices across the world. The education delivery system need innovation so that students feel engaged. There are multiple problems plaguing the system, but the biggest is we have a youth that is not demanding excellence from the very people who demand excellence from them! Mhayani Ngullie, Kohima

US $3 billion. And it is indeed ironical that as India attempts to bail Sri Lanka out from its economic quagmire, the Lankan government is requesting for a further US $1 billion in aid from China, the same country whose debttrap diplomacy Sri Lanka finds itself a victim of. China has thus far expressed no interest whatsoever in assisting Sri Lanka escape its predicament. Not only has China declined any compromise in debt repayment or restructuring, its state-run media has mocked the country by blaming Sri Lanka’s dollar dependence and pro-India policies for the dire situation. As per Zhang Xiaoyu, a research fellow at Communication University of China, the Sri Lankan government has failed to

grasp the opportunity to “restructure Sri Lanka’s economy and put forward large-scale reforms. Growth has been driven by construction and domestic retail, neither of which can be traded on the global market”. India, in contrast, has been generous and brotherly in its attitude toward its southern maritime neighbour. There is ample rationale for New Delhi to attach terms involving “unfriendly third parties” to any provision of credit, aid, or assistance in terms of prying Sri Lanka loose from China’s embrace, and yet New Delhi has displayed unfettered commitment toward unconditionally supporting the Lankan people in their hour of need. India’s External Af-

fairs Minister S. Jaishankar, for instance, committed to exporting food without undue advantage. Despite there being bureaucratic difficulties in implementation, the Indian High Commissioner to the nation, Gopal Baglay, stated that India has already provided assistance amounting to US $2.5 billion to Sri Lanka with focus on currency—currency swap and credit for food, fuel, and energy. As forthcoming as India has been, its humanitarian assistance shall not suffice to extricate Sri Lanka from its current crisis. Therefore, there is merit in the latter’s outreach to the International Monetary Fund (IMF). It is encouraging that the IMF is closely monitoring political and economic developments in Sri Lanka.

India’s currency could keep falling; the rupee is under a test

T

he rupee is under a test and there are no textbook answers as global conditions as well as our vulnerabilities to external shocks differ from past episodes of sharp currency depreciation. The Indian rupee has historically weakened against the US dollar, but bouts of volatility never fail to set alarm bells ringing. This time, they are particularly loud. The rupee plumbed 79.3 per dollar on 6 July, depreciating more than 5% in this fiscal year so far. The pace of depreciation, always a key concern, depends on the extent of the economy’s vulnerabilities and the potency of the external shock it faces, along with the timing and nature of policy action. External vulnerability is mainly measured by the size of our current account deficit (CAD), short-term external debt and foreign exchange cover. A ‘shock’ could take the form of sharp interest rate increases by systemically important central banks, such as the US Federal Reserve, geopolitical developments, oil price volatility, or a financial crisis—all of which create a risk-off scenario, leading to capital flight from (and currency volatility in) emerging markets. In the past two decades, we have seen three major shocks: the Global Financial Crisis (GFC) of 2008, the ‘taper tantrum’ of 2013, and the highly complex global turmoil currently underway. What does the vulnerabilityshock framework tell us in each of these events? During the GFC, the Indian economy was less vulnerable—four years prior to it, India had strong economic

growth averaging 7.9%. In the year-ago period (fiscal 2007-08), we had a low CAD of 1.3% of gross domestic product (GDP), even if inflation was somewhat high at 6.2%. But given the large shock, the rupee slid by an average of 14% in 2008-09. In contrast, India’s domestic vulnerability was much higher during the taper tantrum, when the Fed’s mere signal of tapering its asset purchases triggered a run on the rupee. Inflation was surging (9.3% in 2013-14), import cover was low, and the CAD touched a high of 4.8% of GDP in the year ago-period, making India part of the ‘fragile five’ group of economies. These, together with a strengthening of the dollar index, caused a 11.1% depreciation in the rupee-dollar exchange rate in 2013-14. The external shocks facing the rupee today are piling up. The Fed’s aggressive rate hikes, to tackle multi-decade high inflation, has led to a reduced interest differential between the US and emerging markets such as India, prompting foreign fund outflows. Crude oil prices remain volatile above $100 per barrel, hiking the import bill and importing inflation into India. To top off this risk-off scenario, geopolitical shifts, sanctions and commodity price volatility amid the Russia-Ukraine crisis are changing trade and supply chain dynamics, even as we navigate the after-effects of a global pandemic that is down but not out. On the vulnerability front, India is slightly better off than during the taper tantrum. The economy is re-

covering from covid, our forex reserves and import cover are relatively comfortable, external debt is lower and the CAD was still benign (at 1.2% of GDP) last fiscal. So, despite the uniqueness and size of the global shock, our lower vulnerability going into the crisis and the Reserve Bank of India’s (RBI) interventions have warded off a sharper depreciation of our currency so far. And the real effective exchange rate—a measure of the competitiveness of the currency—is still overvalued: it actually appreciated in May (over April) because our major trading partners had sharper currency depreciation and higher inflation. That said, our vulnerability is on the rise. India’s CAD is expected to more than double to 3% of GDP in 2022-23, owing to high crude prices amid sticky imports, a pick up in gold imports, and the effects of a global slowdown on exports. To ease pressure on the current account and rupee, India’s government recently announced higher customs duty on gold in a bid to curb domestic demand for its imports. This is reminiscent of action taken in 2013. Monetary policy, too, has stepped in. RBI has frontloaded interest rate hikes to combat inflation, which should help slow the speed at which the interest rate differential between the US and India was narrowing. It has also been intervening in spot and forward markets to support the rupee. Apart from the interest rate channel and direct forex market interventions, RBI an-

How climate smart agriculture help mitigate climate change

I

n light of India’s 2070 carbon neutrality goal planned at the CoP26 in Glasgow, the Union Budget for 202223 includes “climate policy” and “energy revolution” as one of the Amrit Kaal’s four priority areas. Agriculture accounts for 73% of the nation’s methane emissions. Despite becoming a world’s 3rd largest emitter of methane, India has opted out of the new EU-US agreement to reduce methane emissions by at least 30 percent by 2030. Farming, in particular, emits significant amounts of nitrous oxide and methane, two potent greenhouse gases. As a result, climate-smart agriculture (CSA) is gaining popularity all over the world in order to meet the set of climate challenges while further generating food and energy in an environmentally and socially sustainable manner. Climate smart agriculture, as described by Food and Agricultural Organizations (FAO), is identified as raising agricultural production in a sustainable manner, having to adapt to and construct resilience to climate, and reducing greenhouse gas emissions. CSA is a strategy for increasing technical, policy, and investment in the environment in order to achieve sustainable agricultural growth and food security in the face of climate change. Experts believe that a range of techniques can be used to meet the goals of climate smart farming. For instance,

While Sri Lanka’s crisis is certainly not of India’s making, the country is India’s neighbour and there should be no space thereof for hesitation in doing what is possible to assist in the country’s recovery. Yet, Chinese propaganda attempting to tarnish India’s image both globally and before the Sri Lankan masses needs to be proactively guarded against, and India’s humanitarian efforts must be publicised both in Sri Lanka and internationally. Therefore, instead of the age-old “neki kar, dariya mein daal” (do good and forget about it), India’s mantra should be “neki kar, danka baja” (do good and publicise it). Dr. Aditya Bhan is a quantitative economist (As published in Observer Research Foundation)

the use of inclusive renewable energy sources for agriculture such as windmills, solar panels, pyrolysis units, and bio energy-powered water pumps is critical for energy-efficient food systems. Resource-conserving technologies: zero tillage allow farmers to grow wheat fairly shortly after paddy or cotton produce to prevent warmer temperatures that are detrimental to grain development. Improving food security through moderate climate change, using natural resources sustainably, using all goods more competently, and having less inconsistency and better reliability in their outputs. More effective and versatile agriculture prompts a significant transformation in the management of land, water, soil nutrients, and genetic resources via climate smart agriculture methods. Climate-smart agriculture explicitly seeks efficiencies and trade-offs between food security, modification, and mitigation. Several farming methods contribute to both of these goals at the same time. Farmers who plant trees to avoid soil degradation also help to mitigate climate change by wanting to remove atmospheric co2. There are initiatives for whom the main goal is to reduce emissions by stopping deforestation and forest degradation. These, however, can benefit indigenous communities as well. As a result, one component of climate-smart agroecosystems is the handling of farms, crops, livestock, aquacul-

ture, and gathering fisheries to maintain near-term food security and survival needs with adaptation and mitigation priorities. Ecosystem and landscape governance for the conservation of ecological systems critical to food security, agricultural development, adaptation, and mitigation. When comparing climate-smart agriculture and organic farming, the former is defined by its desired outcomes—resilient, productive, and low-emission agricultural systems. The method of production defines organic agriculture (no use of synthetic pesticides or fertilisers). Many organic farming practices, on the other hand, are climate-smart. When comparing climate-smart agriculture and organic farming, the former is characterised by its preferred outputs, productive, and low-emission agricultural structures. The technique of production defines organic agriculture (no use of synthetic pesticides or fertilisers). Many organic farming practices, on the other hand, are climate-smart. Organic agriculture, according to experts, improves natural nutrient cycling and increases organic matter in the soil, which can help with climate change resilience and carbon sequestration in soils. We can conclude that climate-smart agriculture can be more efficient and useful. Zoya Hussain (As published in India Times)

nounced measures to attract foreign investor funds, exempting foreign currency deposits from statutory reserve requirements, easing provisions for remittances, allowing more short-term foreign portfolio investments in government securities and raising investment limits for external commercial borrowings. These changes are aimed at improving our supply of dollars. This, at a time when RBI’s direct market interventions have shaved a part of its sizeable forex buffers (from $631.5 billion on 25 February to $593.3 billion on 24 June). Indeed, the measures announced are prudent. The experience of other currency crises shows that forex reserves can quickly burn through in case of a run on the currency, and hence, alternative channels are required to shore them up. Thus, we expect that RBI will allow an orderly depreciation of the rupee in line with evolving fundamentals, even as it will continue to intervene in forex markets to limit volatility. The past two episodes of sharp depreciation tell us that while the rupee took a dive versus the dollar below its long-term trend, it also corrected once the risks subsided. However, the situation today is far more complex and evolving. Until the underlying factors stabilize, further volatility and depreciation can be expected. Gujarat cop arrests former IPS officer Sanjiv Bhatt from jail in 2002 riots related case AHMEDABAD, JUL 13 (AGENCIES): A Special Investigation Team of the Gujarat Police has arrested former IPS officer Sanjiv Bhatt through transfer warrant in a case of conspiring to falsely implicate innocent persons in connection with the 2002 communal riots, an official said. Bhatt is the third accused arrested in the case after social activist Teesta Setalvad and former Director General of Police of Gujarat R B Sreekumar. He has been lodged in Palanpur jail in Banaskantha district since 2018 in a 27-year-old case in which he is accused of planting narcotics to frame a Rajasthan-based

lawyer. During that trial, he was also convicted to life in a custodial death case in Jamnagar. “ We t o o k S a n j i v Bhatt’s custody from Palanpur jail on transfer warrant and formally arrested him on Tuesday evening,” Deputy Commissioner of Police, Ahmedabad Crime

Branch, Chaitanya Mandlik said later in the day. Mandlik is one of the members of the SIT formed by the state government last month to probe the roles of Bhatt, Sreekumar and Setalvad in a case of fabricating evidence in various cases related to the post-Godhra riots of 2002. Setalvad and Sreekumar were arrested by the crime branch last month and they are currently behind bars. The two were arrested after the Supreme Court upheld the clean chit given by a Special Investigation Team to the then Gujarat chief minister Narendra Modi in the 2002 riots cases.

Bhutan. Iran, Pakistan and Afghanistan scored worse than India. South Asia (62.3 per cent) has the largest gender gap of all regions, with low scores across all measured gender gaps and little progress made in most countries since 2021. At its current pace, it will take 197 years to close the gender gap in the region. The economic gender gap has closed by 1.8 per cent with increases in the share of women in professional and technical roles in countries including Bangladesh and India as well as Nepal. The WEF said that of the 146 economies surveyed, just one in five has managed to close the gender gap by at least 1 per cent in the past year. “The cost of living crisis is impacting women disproportionately after the shock of labour market losses during the pandemic and the continued inadequacy of care infrastructure,” WEF Managing Di-

rector Saadia Zahidi said. “In face of a weak recovery, government and business must make two sets of efforts: targeted policies to support women’s return to the workforce and women’s talent development in the industries of the future. Otherwise, we risk eroding the gains of the last decades permanently and losing out on the future economic returns of diversity,” she added. At the current rates of progress, it will take 155 years to close the political empowerment gender gap -- 11 more than predicted in 2021 -- and 151 years for the economic participation and opportunity gender gap. Although 29 countries have reached full parity, it will still take 22 years to close the educational attainment gender gap. And while more than 140 countries have closed at least 95 per cent of their health gaps, overall backsliding in health and survival means there may be a reversal.

MUMBAI, JUL 13 (PTI): The Shiv Sena apparently supported Droupadi Murmu for the Presidential polls because she is a tribal and not as a National Democratic Alliance (NDA) candidate, a Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) leader said. The Shiv Sena, NCP, and Congress are constituents of the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA), which was in power till the last month before the rebellion by Shiv Sena’s Eknath Shinde and most of the Sena MLAs led to its collapse. Maharashtra NCP president Jayant Patil told reporters on Wednesday that the Sena had not discussed with NCP before

As she belongs to an Adivasi community, the Sena must have extended the support,” he added. The Shiv Sena had backed United Progressive Alliance’s (UPA’s) nominees Pratibha Patil and Pranab Mukherjee in the Presidential polls held in 2007 and 2012 respectively, even though the Sena was a constituent of the BJP-led NDA at that time. Seeking to scotch the perception that the Sena broke Opposition ranks to support the NDA nominee, Patil said parties take several decisions independently and allies should not interfere. Shiv Sena chief Uddhav Thackeray on Tuesday announced his party’s support for Murmu for the July 18 presidential election.

said that Covid-19 has set gender parity back by a generation and a weak recovery was making it worse globally. On India, the WEF said its gender gap score recorded its seventh-highest level in the last 16 years, but it continues to rank among the worst performers on various parameters. “With a female population of approximately 662 million, India’s level of attainment weighs heavily on regional rankings,” it said. Recovering ground since 2021, India regis-

income improved; while values for both men and women diminished, they declined more for men. However, in the area of political empowerment, the subindex where India ranks relatively higher at 48th place, showed a declining score due to the diminishing share of years women have served as head of state for the past 50 years. On the health and survival subindex, India ranked the lowest at 146th place and figured among the five countries with gender gaps larger than 5 per cent -- the other four being Qatar, Pakistan, Azerbaijan and China. However, India was ranked the top globally in terms of gender parity for primary education enrolment and tertiary education enrolment and at the eighth place for the position of head of state. slaps Rs 4,389 cr notice SCF should have positive outcome Indian economy to grow onIndia Oppo for import duty evasion in education system: CS 7.1%- 7.6% : Deloitte report

NEW DELHI, JUL 13 (PTI): Indian economy is projected to grow 7.1–7.6 per cent in the current financial year despite shifting geopolitical realities across the world, a report said on Wednesday. In its India’s economic outlook - July 2022 report, leading consultancy Deloitte India said that as 2021 was coming to a close, there was optimism in the air but the optimism received a jolt early this year as a wave of Omicron infections swept through the country and Russia’s invasion of Ukraine happened in February. “These events aggravated the pre-existing challenges such as surging inflation, supply shortages, and shifting geopolitical realities across the world with no definite end in sight. “And the subsequent confluence of headwinds such as surging commodity prices and disruption in trade and financial transactions quickly deteriorated economic fundamentals that were trending up a few months back,’’ the re-

port said. Rising commodity prices, surging inflation, supply shortages, and shifting geopolitical realities across the world weigh on the growth outlook. Still, India will likely reign as the world’s fastest-growing economy, it noted. “India is expected to grow by 7.1–7.6 per cent in 2022–23 and 6–6.7 per cent in 2023–24. This will ensure that India reigns as the world’s fastest-growing economy over the next few years, driving world growth,’’ the report said. Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has projected a GDP growth of 7.2 per cent for the current fiscal ending March 2023. Deloitte India said that it expects inflation and supply chain disrup-

tions to remain entrenched for some time. The domestic currency will likely recover some lost ground against the US dollar, but not before early next year. India’s relatively strong recovery and the global slowdown will improve INR’s strength, it added. The rupee depreciated by 3 paise to close at a record low of 79.62 (provisional) against the US currency on Wednesday. “The desire of global businesses to look for more resilient and cost-effective investment and export destinations during difficult times, among other factors, could work in India’s favour,’’ Rumki Majumdar, Economist at Deloitte India, said.

NEW DELHI, JUL 13 (PTI): Chinese phone maker Oppo’s India unit has been slapped with a notice for alleged Rs 4,389 crore import duty evasion, the Finance Ministry said on Wednesday. A show-cause notice has been slapped on Oppo India on July 8 after recovery of documents during searches on its premises that indicated wilful misdeclaration in the description of some imports and remittance of royalty and license fee to various MNCs, including those based in China. During an investigation of Oppo Mobiles India Pvt Ltd, a subsidiary of Guangdong Oppo Mobile Telecommunications Corporation Ltd, the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) has detected Customs duty evasion of around Rs 4,389 crore, the ministry said in a statement. Oppo did not immediately respond to queries sent to the company regarding the story. Oppo India is engaged in the business of manufacturing, assembling, wholesale trading, distribution of mobile handsets and accessories thereof across

India. It deals in various brands of mobile phones, including Oppo, OnePlus and Realme. During the investigation, searches were conducted by the DRI at the office premises of Oppo India and residences of its key management employees, which led to the recovery of “incriminating evidence, indicating wilful misdeclaration in the description of certain items imported for use in the manufacture of mobile phones”. This misdeclaration resulted in wrongful availment of ineligible duty exemption benefits by Oppo India, amounting to Rs 2,981 crore. Senior management employees and domestic suppliers of Oppo India questioned by the DRI officers accepted the submission of wrongful description before the customs authorities at the time of import, the ministry said. T h e i nve s t i g a t i o n also revealed that Oppo India had remitted/made provisions for payment of ‘royalty’ and ‘licence fee’ to various multinational companies, including those based in China, in lieu of the use of proprietary technology/brand/IPR license etc.

(From p-1) He said the approach in NEP 2020 was a bottomup approach where subject experts contribute based on which a state curriculum framework would be designed. This he said will then be used for the national curriculum framework and the national curriculum framework will be developed by the Centre. Another big challenge, he pointed out was the accessibility to education as there were first-generation learners, children from poor economic background and issue of denial of education to girl child, stressing that all of them had to be brought under the education system. Meanwhile, addressing the seminar, commissioner & secretary School Education & SCERT, Kevileno Angami stated that the inputs given by the people involved in the curriculum framework were critical as they would form the basis on which SCERT will develop textbooks for the students to be studying in schools. While stating that education was at the threshold of change, transiting from

the old to the new with NEP 2020, Kevileno said that under the new policy, it will be a 5+3+3+4 system, where 5 years will be the foundational stage, 3 years in the preparatory stage, 3 years in the middle stage, and 4 years in the secondary stage. She underlined the need to recalibrate and restructure the education system as envisaged in NEP, 2020. Stressing the need for change, Kevileno said there was a need to provide a curriculum to the students where they can study and adapt to the changing times. In her keynote address, SCERT director NC Kikon stated that NEP 2020 was to develop citizens capable of rational thought and action, possessing compassion and empathy, courage and resilience, scientific temper and creative imagination with sound ethical morals and values. She said that policy aims at producing engaged, productive, and contributing citizens for building an equitable inclusive, and plural society. Kikon also said that the policy envisions an education system that contributes directly

to transforming India into an equitable and vibrant society, thereby making India a global knowledge superpower. She said SCERTs in the country have been entrusted as the state nodal agency for the development of state curriculum framework and have been directed to set up 25 state focus groups to work on 25 identified curricular areas. She stated that the Nagaland state focus group for 25 subject areas worked to bring out a draft curriculum framework guided by the visions and principles of the NEP, 2020 to integrate and infuse traditional knowledge, cultural values, and indigenous education in all the subject areas of the state curriculum framework. She added the draft was prepared considering the difficulties faced in the present system of education and looking at the challenges ahead. During the seminar, sessions on curriculum framework for school education, teacher education, adult education, issues and challenges, and future courses of action were also taken up.

When asked whether Dimapur MLAs should fight the encroachment menace together, Longkumer replied, “There should be no partisan views on such matters of public importance”. On those officers

On whether compensation should be made to the encroachers, Longkumer maintained that it was duty of the court of law to decide. It can be noted that Ministry of Railways, earlier this year, selected Dimapur Railway station to be developed into a world class station, with several sanctioned developmental works ready for execution. NAGALAND POST, DIMAPUR THURSDAY, JULY 14, 2022

Rishi Sunak 3 in fray for next SL Prez I will run the economy like Margaret Thatcher: Eight contenders in race to

Sajith Premadasa

C O L O M B O, J U L 1 3 (IANS): A three-pronged battle is set to take place for the selection of the next Sri Lankan President by approval of Parliament on July 20, state media reported. Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe, Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) MP Dalles Alahapperuma and Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa mull the submission of nomination papers to run for presidency in the secret ballot. The Presidential post fell vacant prematurely in Sri Lankan history on one occasion -- the assassination

of President R. Premadasa on May 1, 1993 . It is now slated to be vacant after the resignation of President Gotabaya Rajapaksa as already announced by him, the Daily Mirror reported. Parliament will take a secret ballot on July 20 to elect the new President. According to Daily Mirror sources, Wickremesinghe will contest for the post to serve the rest of the current presidential term. A section of the SLPP is planning to back him while another faction of the SLPP, including the 10-party alliance supports Alahapperuma.

Earlier, the Samagi Jana Balawegaya announced that Sajith Premadasa will be its presidential candidate, the Daily Mirror reported. The candidates who get more than 50% of valid votes will become the President. Unless any of the contestants cross the 50% mark, the preferential votes marked by the MPs will be counted. According to informed sources, the Janatha Vimukthi Peramun (JVP) has taken up the position that a neutral MP with no future electoral ambitions should be appointed the next President, the Daily Mirror reported.

of a serious cost of living crisis gripping Britain, with a recession feared by economists. This has catapulted the UK’s economy as the main issue in the ballots to determine who will be the next leader of the ruling Conservative party and therefore the prime minister. She is a revered figure in Conservatives circles; but generally reviled in the now opposition Labour and Liberal Democrat parties. As chancellor of the

Cash-strapped Pak may face economic crisis amid fast-depleting forex reserves ISLAMABAD, JUL 13 (PTI): Cash-starved Pakistan could face a serious economic problem as its foreign exchange reserves are depleting fast amid rising external debt servicing, according to a media report on Wednesday. The country’s external debt servicing rose to USD 10.886 billion in the first three quarters of 2021-22 compared to USD 13.38 billion in the entire FY21. It was just USD 1.653 billion in 1QFY22 against USD 3.51 billion in the first quarter of 2020-21, but it jumped to USD 4.357 billion in 2QFY22 and to USD 4.875 billion in 3QFY22. The country has been facing a serious threat from its external front as the State Bank of Pakistan’s foreign exchange reserves fell to sin-

gle digits despite a USD 2.3 billion inflow from China late last month, the Dawn newspaper reported. “The increasing size of the external debt servicing in each quarter indicates the government has been borrowing dollars at higher commercial rates to meet its foreign debt repayment obligations,” the report said. The current coalition government led by Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) did not disclose the rate at which it had borrowed USD 2.3 billion from China. Initially, Beijing had agreed to roll over the syndicated loans before the ouster of the previous PTI government. However, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif ’s administration had to wait for two months to secure the

Chinese loan. The financial sector and other stakeholders of the economy are still not satisfied with the hidden cost of the Chinese loan. The market is full of speculation that Chinese loans were taken at a very high rate. Finance Minister Miftah Ismail has been assuring Pakistanis that the release of the USD 1 billion tranche is expected in a few days but three months have gone without a satisfactory reply from the IMF. Bankers believe that the fund is dictating the government like Washington to do more., the report said. Since the IMF has stopped funding, the country is not getting project funding from the World Bank and Asian Development Bank.

The Inter national Atomic Energy Agency, the UN’s nuclear watchdog, reported last month that Iran has 43 kilograms of uranium enriched to 60 per cent purity — a short step to 90 per cent. Nonproliferation experts warn that’s enough fissile material for one nuclear weapon if Iran chose to pursue it. However, Iran still would need to design a bomb and a delivery system for it, which could likely need months. Iran insists its nuclear program is for peaceful purposes. Tehran’s escalating nuclear work has raised alarms, and transparency is rapidly diminishing over its nuclear program. Last month Iran shut off more than two dozen IAEA monitoring cameras from nuclear-related sites across the country.

KYIV, JUL 13 (AP): Renewed Russian artillery barrages across Ukraine killed at least five civilians and wounded another 18 in the past day, the office of Ukraine’s president reported on Wednesday as Moscow attempted to expand and consolidate its gains in the country’s east. Most of the deaths occurred in Donetsk province, which is part of a region where pro-Russia separatists have fought for eight years and the Kremlin is intent on capturing. The city of Bakhmut faced particularly heavy shelling as the current focus of Russia’s offensive, Donetsk administrative chief Pavlo Kyrylenko said. Office of the

LO N D O N, J U L 1 3 (IANS): Eight candidates have been nominated to enter the race to be the leader of the Conservative Party and replace outgoing Boris Johnson as the UK Prime Minister, the party’s backbench 1922 Committee said. The eight contenders who successfully enlisted the required backing of at least 20 Conservative lawmakers are: Former Chancellor of the Exchequer Rishi Sunak; Foreign Secretary Liz Truss; International Trade Minister Penny Mordaunt; backbench lawmaker Tom Tugendhat; Attorney General Suella Braverman; newly appointed Chancellor Nadhim Zahawi; former Equalities Minister Kemi Badenoch; and former Foreign Secretary Jeremy Hunt. The first round of vot-

The number of contenders will be whittled down to two through more rounds of secret ballot, before British parliamentarians break up for the summer recess on July 21, Xinhua news agency reported. The final two contenders will then go through a postal ballot of all the Conservative members, numbering around 200,000, over the summer and the winner will be announced on September 5, becoming the new Tory leader and the UK’s next Prime Minister.

NASA’s James Webb telescope detects water on distant planet N ASA’s James Webb Space Telescope has detected signs of water, along with evidence for clouds and haze, in the atmosphere of a hot, puffy gas giant planet orbiting a Sun-like star over a thousand light years away, the US space agency said on Wednesday. The observation is the most detailed of its kind to date, demonstrating Webb’s unprecedented ability to analyse distant atmospheres, according to NASA. WASP96 b is one of more than 5,000 confirmed exoplanets in the Milky Way. Located roughly 1,150 light-years away in the southern-sky constellation Phoenix, it represents a type of gas giant that has no direct analogue in our solar system, it said in a statement. With a mass less than

half that of Jupiter and a diameter 1.2 times greater, WASP-96 b is much puffier than any planet orbiting our

Sun. With a temperature WASP-96 b orbits greater than 538 degrees extremely close to its SunCelsius, it is significantly like star, just one-ninth of the hotter. distance between Mercury

and the Sun, completing one circuit every three-anda-half Earth-days, according to NASA. The combination of large size, short orbital period, puffy atmosphere, and lack of contaminating light from objects nearby in the sky makes WASP96 b an ideal target for atmospheric observations. While the Hubble S p a c e Te l e s c o p e h a s analysed numerous exoplanet atmospheres over the past two decades, capturing the first clear detection of water in 2013, Webb’s immediate and more detailed observation marks a giant leap forward in the quest to characterise potentially habitable planets beyond Earth. On June 21, Webb’s Near-Infrared Imager and Slitless Spectrograph (NIRISS) measured light

from the WASP-96 system for 6.4 hours as the planet moved across the star. This resulted in a light curve showing the overall dimming of starlight during the transit, and a transmission spectr um revealing the brightness change of individual wavelengths of infrared light between 0.6 and 2.8 microns. The light cur ve confirmed properties of the planet that had already been determined from other observations - the existence, size, and orbit of the planet. The transmission spectr um revealed the previously hidden details of the atmosphere: the unambiguous signature of water, indications of haze, and evidence of clouds that were thought not to exist based on prior observations. A transmission

spectrum is made by comparing starlight filtered through a planet’s atmosphere as it moves across the star to the unfiltered starlight detected when the planet is beside the star. Researchers are able to detect and measure the abundances of key gases in a planet’s atmosphere based on the absorption pattern the locations and heights of peaks on the graph. In the same way that people have distinctive finger prints and DNA s e q u e n c e s, a t o m s a n d molecules have characteristic patterns of wavelengths that they absorb. The spectrum of WASP-96 b is not only the most detailed near-infrared transmission spectrum of an exoplanet atmosphere captured to date, but it also covers a remarkably

wide range of wavelengths, including visible red light and a portion of the spectr um that has not previously been accessible from other telescopes, NASA said. This part of the spectrum is particularly sensitive to water as well as other key molecules like oxygen, methane, and carbon dioxide. Researchers will be able to use the spectrum to measure the amount of water vapour in the atmosphere, constrain the abundance of various elements like carbon and oxygen, and estimate the temperature of the atmosphere with depth. They can then use this information to make inferences about the overall make-up of the planet, as well as how, when, and where it formed. (PTI)

BANGKOK, JUL 13 (AP): New Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag oversaw a 4-0 win over archrival Liverpool on Tuesday in his first game in charge as European pre-season friendlies returned to Asia after a twoyear break. The Dutch coach was quick to downplay the significance of the result, however, against a Liverpool side that made a total of 21 substitutions. “I think our team played brave, played proactive. We have to work really hard to cut out the mistakes but of course we are happy with the first game. I know we have good players,” Ten Hag told the club’s in-house

But, still, I have seen some really good things and I think what you see is we have a lot of creativity and speed up front, so we have potential.” More than 50,000 fans packed into Bangkok’s iconic Rajamangala Stadium for a first chance to see Premier League stars since before the COVID-19 pandemic. Top European teams have been coming to Asia for preseason tours for decades — this was Liverpool’s seventh visit to Bangkok — but those trips were called off in 2020 and 2021. Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp wasn’t bothered by the result, having left stars such as Mohamed Salah and Virgil van Dijk on the bench at the start of the game. “The game obviously came a bit too early for us, for a few of our players.,” Klopp said. “You can see that as well.
