SIT prelim report can’t be made public: ADG

Correspondent

KOHIMA, JAN 13 (NPN): Amidst the growing clamour to make the Special Investigation Team’s (SIT) preliminary report on Oting-Tiru incident public, additional director general (law & order) Sandeep M Tamgadge has clarified that this was not legally tenable. Addressing a press conference at police headquarters (PHQ) here on Thursday, Tamgadge, who is also supervising the SIT, explained that once FIR was registered under Section 154 CrPC, it was submitted to the court of law and the result of the investigation, in any form, by an investigation agency was supposed to be shared only with the court. Therefore, he pointed out putting the preliminary report in public domain, especially when the investigation was incomplete, was not legally tenable. Giving details of the investigation process, the ADG said forensic samples

have been collected from the site and sent to Guwahati and Hyderabad forensic science laboratories (FSL) for tests, whose were results were awaited. Mentioning that it was difficult to say how much more time the FSLs would take to share their reports, he said one SP-ranked officer has been entrusted with the task of constantly following up with the labs. He claimed that special requests have been made to the labs to expedite their scientific analysis considering sensitive nature of the case. He said the SIT would prepare its final report after

the results of the forensic tests were received, adding that the final report would then be submitted to special court, Mon. “As soon as we receive these reports, which are very crucial reports, we will be in a position to start preparing the final report which will be submitted to the honorable competent special court,” he said. He mentioned that criminal investigation was a “technical-legal procedure” carried out under Chapter XII of CrPC. Claiming that the investigation by SIT was largely over, Tamgadge said only cyber forensic probe

was underway now. He mentioned that multiple call detail records (CDRs) have been collected of multiple phone numbers, adding that CDR analysis too was by and large over. He said that the SIT had worked overtime racing against time to complete the preliminary investigation. He said the team examined over 85 civilian witnesses, including those injured at Mon, Dimapur and Dibrugarh, villagers, government officials, drivers, etc. He mentioned that notices were issued to Indian Army under Sec. 91 seeking important documents, which were duly provided and from which the team got details of the personnel involved in the incident. Fur ther, summons were issued under Section 160 CrPC and 37 officers and other ranks of the army and Assam Rifles were examined, he added. He said the SIT examined the entire operating unit of December 4 that

7 killed, 45 injured as train derails in WB

KOLKATA/ NEW DELHI/GUWAHATI, JAN 13 (PTI): At least seven people were killed and more than 45 injured when 12 coaches of the Bikaner-Guwahati Express train derailed and some overturned near Domohani in West Bengal's Jalpaiguri district on Thursday, an official said. The accident occurred around 5 pm in an area under the Alipurduar division of Northeast Frontier Railway, an NFR spokesperson said in Guwahati. “Seven passengers have died so far. We recovered four bodies from the accident site while three people died in hospital,” Jalpaiguri District Magistrate Moumita Godara Basu said, adding at least 45 passengers were injured in the accident. “Since some of them are in a critical condition, the death toll may go up. We are now using cranes for removing the damaged compartments,” she said, adding rescuers thorough(Cont’d on p-8) ly searched each coach

was led by one Major-rank officer and included two JCOs and 31 personnel. He revealed that the 37 officials examined by the SIT included one CO-rank officer, one brigadier-rank officer and one major-rank officer. He mentioned that two statements of surviving victims too were recorded under Section 164. Tamgadge said the guiding principle of SIT was to conduct the investigation as professionally as possible so that the evidence could withstand intense legal scrutiny in any court of law. Considering that the SIT notification order had provision for co-opting more officers if required, he said more officers were co-opted and the team’s strength swelled to 21 officers from PHQ, including four officers from Konyak community. He further stated that the case registered at Tizit police station was later transferred to State Crime Police station in Kohima

for survivors and bodies through darkness and thick fog. The injured are being treated at hospitals in Maynaguri and Jalpaiguri. Commissioner, Railway Safety, will conduct an inquiry into the cause of the accident, a railway official said in New Delhi. NFR said in a statement in Guwahati that the rescue operations have been completed. There were 1,053 passengers on board the train at the time of the derail-

ment, it said, adding those stranded were provided drinking water and snacks. West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee briefed Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the tragedy when they were in the middle of an online meeting to review the Covid situation. Railways have announced an ex-gratia payment of Rs 5 lakh to the next of kin of those killed in the accident, Rs 1 lakh to the grievously injured and Rs 25,000 for passengers with simple injury.

‘Need to focus more on local containment’: Modi tells CMs Myanmar insurgents planning attacks in Manipur ahead of polls: Intel report Narendra Modi during the virtual interaction with chief ministers in New Delhi. (PTI)

NEW DELHI, JAN 13 (PTI): Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday interacted with chief ministers over the COVID-19 situation in the country and stressed on local containment of the virus spread as well as ensuring minimum damage to livelihood while making strategies to deal with the surge in cases due to the Omicron variant.

In his remarks at the meeting, the prime minister underlined the importance of vaccination and the need to further accelerate the 'Har Ghar Dastak' programme to achieve 100 per cent vaccina-tion coverage. “We have vaccinated nearly three crore adolescents within 10 days and this shows India's potential and our preparedness to

deal with this challenge,” Modi said. The prime minister said that vaccines made in India are proving their superiority all over the world. “It is a matter of pride for every Indian that today India has given the first dose to about 92 per cent of the adult population. The coverage of second dose has also reached around 70 per cent

in the country," he said. Modi said the central and state governments must continue with pre-emptive, pro-active and collective approach followed so far in fighting the pandemic. “The sooner we give precautionary dose to frontline workers and senior citizens, the stronger our healthcare system will become,” he said. Modi asserted that it is very important to safeguard the economy and livelihood of common people while framing Covid strategies. “There should be minimum damage to the livelihood of the common people, economic activities, and the momentum of the economy be maintained. It is very important to keep

these things in mind while making any (containment) strategy,” Modi said. “So it would be better to focus more on local containment,” he added. Modi said 130 crore people of India will surely emerge victorious from the coronavirus pandemic with their collective efforts. The doubts that were there earlier about Omicron are slowly getting cleared now, he noted. The Omicron variant is infecting the general public many times faster than the earlier variants, he added. "We have to be alert, be careful..," Modi said. Home Minister Amit Shah and Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya also attended the meeting.

NEW DELHI, JAN 13 (AGENCIES): With hardly a month left for Assembly polls in Manipur, security agencies have been alerted about a big security threat of insurgents from Myan-mar planning terror acts in the poll-bound state, The New Indian Express report stated. Highly placed sources said an insurgent group based in Myanmar was trying to carry out ter-ror attacks in Manipur in coordination with Northeastbased militant outfits. The sources also said insurgent groups such as NSCN K (YA) and PLA have been trying to set up

new bases in Myanmar and that they are trying to create disturbance in the Northeast just before the polls. According to intelligence inputs, insurgent groups, as part of their terror operations, are plan-ning to attack security forces in Manipur. Additionally, intelligence agencies believe a new batch of highly trained recruits belonging to ULFA(I) has infiltrated into Assam. “It was brought to our notice that senior leaders of NSCN (K-Y/A) held a high-level meeting in a nearby village in Myanmar to plan retaliatory attack on the forces, which carried out

a precision attack against the group in June 2018,” a senior security official said. There are active insurgent groups in Assam, Manipur, Arunachal Pradesh and Nagaland which have not yet entered into a ceasefire agreement with the Centre. These include ULFA (I) in Assam, NSCN-K (YA) in southern Arunachal Pradesh and Nagaland, and Imphal Valley-based insurgent groups like the People’s Liberation Army, People’s Revolutionary Party of Kangleipak, Kanglei Yawol Kanna Lup and the United National Liberation Front.

Gov Mukhi tests Covid Surge in fresh Covid-19 cases raises concern Forest cover in Nagaland positive, hospitalised declines: ISFR 2021 Staff Reporter

DIMAPUR/GUWAHATI, JAN 13 (NPN/IANS/ PTI): Assam and Nagaland Governor Prof. Jagdish Mukhi tested positive for Covid-19, Raj Bhavan officials said on Thursday. The Governor, after being tested positive for the infectious virus, was admitted at the Apollo Hospital in Guwahati on Wednesday evening. "Prof. Mukhi is now in a stable condition," they said, adding that his wife has tested negative and is staying at Raj Bhavan. Mukhi's medical parameters are within normal range and he is asymptomatic, the official said. Taking to twitter, Nagaland chief minister Neiphiu Rio wished Prof. Mukhi a speedy recovery. “My wishes for a speedy recovery of the Honourable Governor of Nagaland and Assam Prof. @ jagdishmukhi who tested positive for COVID-19. Prayers for your good health”, Rio said in a tweet. Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma also wished the Governor a speedy recovery.

DIMAPUR, JAN13 (NPN): In one of the biggest surprises of the new year in the covid front, some 172 air passengers on arrival at Dimapur airport on January 10 were initially tested positive for covid but the confirmed reports were expected in a day or two. Nagaland on January 12 recorded massive spike of 199 positive cases. A senior doctor, speaking to Nagaland Post, said there would be no surprise if most or all of the positive reports were due to Omicron. The doctor said Omicron is very infectious and spreads

very fast even without contact. However, he explained, that though very infectious, Omicron did not cause severe symptoms as the Delta variant. Though adherence to covid protocols continue to be the standard safeguard for protection with the larger objective of breaking the transmission chain; Omicron virus, which are much smaller can be airborne as they are reportedly smaller in size. New research has revealed that Omicron can evade the antibodies generated by vaccines or by treatments administered for Covid-19, however it is neutralised by a booster

vaccine. Reports of infection with the new variant have suggest Omicron symptoms are different to the other COVID-19 strains. A team of researchers in the UK found that the top symptoms for Omicron were a runny nose, a headache, fatigue, sneezing and a sore throat. As with all other Covid strains, the Omicron variant can still cause severe disease or death, particularly for those who are clinically vulnerable. State logs 86 fresh cases: Nagaland on Thursday recorded 86 fresh Covid-19 positive cases while no deaths were reported during the day. Of the fresh cases, 77 were

from Dimapur, six in Kohima and three in Peren, taking the total caseload to 32616.

India logs over 2.4L cases PTI: India logged 2,47,417 new coronavirus infections, the highest in 236 days, taking the total tally of COVID-19 cases to 3,63,17,927 which includes 5,488 cases of the Omicron variant, according to the Union Health Ministry data. The country saw a single day jump of 620 cases of the Omicron variant, the highest so far, taking the total tally of such cases to 5,488, out of which 2,162 people have recovered or migrated so far.

This is it! Covid-19: Which masks are most effective against Omicron?

“Voters don’t vote for the same party. So we need to move with their sentiments.” K Y M C

NEW DELHI, JAN 13 (AGENCIES): ‘Mask Up and Get Vaccinated.’ This has been the most said and heard sentence in the pandemic year and the one that followed. The end of 2021 marked the advent of a new variant, Omicron, a mischievous and highlyspreading one, which is now driving the third wave of the Covid-19 pandemic in the country. While people are clear and decisive about getting vaccines, there is a cloud of doubt surrounding masks.

Masking up is one of the most essential things to do to protect oneself. However, masking up would not work as expected if one is wearing the wrong masks. So, which mask would work against the new Omicron variant? Before we come to a conclusion regarding this pressing question, let us look at the types of masks that are currently prevalent amongst people, and while comparing them, you might stumble upon the right choice. Currently, if you go outside, you will see

Know your masks Cloth mask

Gaps around cheek and nose Good for only large particles -- 80-500 micrometers but ineffective against SARS-CoV-2 which is about 0.12 micrometers

Surgical mask

Gaps around cheek and nose Preferred with double mask, if at all

Cloth and Surgical mask together

Surgical mask under a cloth mask can get you over 91 per cent removal efficiency for air and dust particles

N95 mask

Without a valve Having filter efficiency of 95 per cent or more against particulate aerosols

Preferred mask for use against infections Omicron

How to best wear your mask?

Mask or masks should go over the bridge of your nose and under your chin. Masks should be cleaned and disposed properly. Surgical masks are only good for one-time use.

people wearing the most sophisticated N95 masks, the surgical masks, and the masks made by clothing

material. Now, given the high transmissibility of the variant, it is important to note a few things. The N95 masks are generally made by PPE manufacturers by keeping in mind the quality medical standards. The surgical masks, too, are made by PPE manufacturers; however, these masks offer only a single layer of protection, while the N95 masks offer three-layer protection, which is what is recommended by health experts and the World Health Organization.

T h e c l o t h m a s k s, which are equally popular as the other two alternatives, are not manufactured by keeping medical standards under consideration and are usually made by fashion retailers rather than medical equipment manufacturers. Having said that, the type of masks that you need to choose depends on the surroundings you are in. If in a crowded place, an N95 mask is highly recommended since it offers the best protection against the virus. (Cont’d on p-7)

On Wednesday, the state had registered 880 fresh infections, including 225 in Aizawl district. resentatives of Dalits and backwards were also being neglected. Both Maurya and Chauhan had also levelled similar allegations in their resignation letters. There is no word yet from the Raj Bhavan or the BJP if the resignations have been accepted. In his tweet, Yadav welcomed Saini into the SP fold. “With the arrival of Dr Dharam Singh Saini ji, another warrior of social justice, our positive and progressive politics has received more enthusiasm and strength. Greetings and a hearty welcome for him in SP,” he tweeted. A four-time MLA from

Nakud in Saharanpur district, Saini is considered close to Maurya. Earlier in the day, Shikohabad BJP MLA Mukesh Verma resigned from the primary membership of the party. He cited the Uttar Pradesh government’s “lack of respect” towards backward classes and Dalits as the reason behind his decision. Verma, who is also expected to join the SP, said he would continue the “fight for justice” under Maurya. The rollback of three contentious agriculture laws may have done some damage control, but the farmers in some of the seats in the Kumaon belt, including Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami’s Khatima constituency, have been able to keep the issue alive to a great extent, he added. Giving three chief ministers to the state within five years and bringing about political instability despite a big mandate is another factor that may eclipse the BJP’s chances. However, insiders in the saffron party said the move is going to work in its favour as it has offset the impact of antiincumbency that might have been there against the former chief ministers. Citing an example, they said there was discontent among the priest community against Trivendra Singh Rawat as he had set up the Chardham Devasthanam Board, but his removal as chief minister and the subsequent withdrawal of the Act that had led to the creation of the board have lured them back to the BJP. State BJP spokesperson Shadab Shams expressed confidence that the jinx of the party in power losing at the hustings every

five years will be broken this time in Uttarakhand. “We did it in the 2019 general election, in which we retained all the five Lok Sabha seats in the state, and we will do it again. It is not such a big deal,” he told PTI. Apart from the Modi magic, which the party feels is intact, another factor that will work in its favour is the “double-engine” government due to which the hill state has seen “unprecedented” development in terms of road, rail and air connectivity, despite prolonged Covid lockdowns, Shams said, in a reference to the BJP being in power both at the Centre and in the state. Routed at the hands of the BJP in the last Assembly polls and deserted by party heavyweights, a resurgent Congress on the other hand faces the uphill task of avenging its ignominious defeat in 2017. Former chief minister Harish Rawat, who had lost from both the seats he had contested in 2017, is spearheading the party’s poll campaign in the state. But the Congress had no other option as it has no bigger face than Harish Rawat, whose stature among the state party leaders remains unparalleled.

She said the party has fielded such candidates who have struggled for seeking justice in Uttar Pradesh and the party wants them to come to the forefront and be a part of power in the state. Uttar Pradesh is scheduled to have seven-phase polls beginning from February 10 to March 7 and the results will be out on March 10.

They agreed that both sides should follow “the guidance provided by the state leaders” and work for the resolution of the remaining issues at the earliest, it stated. “It was noted that this would help in restoration of peace and tranquility along the LAC in the Western Sector and enable progress in bilateral relations,” it mentioned. The two sides also agreed to consolidate on the previous outcomes and take effective efforts to maintain the security and stability on the ground in the Western Sector including during winter, it said. “The two sides agreed to stay in close contact and maintain dialogue via military and diplomatic channels and work out a mutually acceptable resolution of the remaining issues at the earliest,” it mentioned. The two sides agreed that the next round of the commanders’ talks should be held at the earliest, the statement said. The 13th round of talks had taken place on October 10 last year and it had ended in a stalemate.

Public should decide Punjab CM: Kejriwal CHANDIGARH, JAN 13 (PTI): Aam Aadmi Party national convener Arvind Kejriwal on Thursday said his party will be asking the general public as to who should be the party’s chief ministerial face in the Punjab Assembly polls even as he indicated that his own preference for the post was state unit president Bhagwant Mann. Kejriwal, however, ruled himself out in the race. The Delhi chief minister in the presence of AAP’s Punjab unit president and MP Mann and party senior leader Raghav Chadha launched a mobile number on which people can give their feedback by 5 pm till January 17 by recording their voice, sending SMS or WhatsApp as to who among the party leaders they want

Arvind Kejriwal to be declared as the chief ministerial candidate. “No, Arvind Kejriwal is not in this race, let me clarify I am not in it,” Kejriwal said. He had in June 2021 announced that the party’s chief ministerial face for the 2022 Punjab Assembly polls will be from the Sikh community, and said the entire Punjab will be proud of him. Kejriwal said though he wanted Mann be declared as CM face, but the

latter insisted that the people of Punjab should make this decision. “Bhagwant Mann is my younger brother, he is AAP’s tall leader. I said Bhagwant Mann should be made, but he said people should be asked first. He said the practice of deciding the name of the CM candidate behind closed doors should be stopped,” Kejriwal told reporters here. Mann said when he was told that his name will be declared as chief ministerial face then the Sangrur MP told Kejriwal that the “people should be asked whom they wish to see CM amongst the party leaders”. The Delhi chief minister said this may be for the first time in independent India that a party is asking people who should be the party’s CM face.

OPINION/EDITORIAL

Nagaland Post VOL. XXXII NO. 38 DIMAPUR, FRIDAY, JANUARY 14, 2022

Two pivotal areas

W

hen COVID-19 pandemic led to lockdown in March 2020 and went beyond 2021, for over a year, the gradual unlock was indeed a big relief. Despite all the restrictions Covid cases continued to rise and then variants of the virus began show up with the most dangerous being the Delta variant that claimed thousands of lives in 2021 in India. Even in Nagaland the Delta variant spelt death almost everywhere among people infected with the virus. As Delta variant cases begun to come down, there was a huge relief. From some 200 or even 300 cases per day during 2020-21, the cases came down to single digit in late 2021. However the cases during the first week of January 2022 has quadrupled. The highest reported infection was on January 10 when around 190 cases were reported. Besides health and life issues, rising fresh transmission cases in the state has also led to a reverse relaxations. Just when educational institutions were gradually reopening, the rise in covid cases has put a dampener. It is like a repeat of the pandemic lockout but the only difference and the worst one, is that people are totally fatigued with adherence to covid protocols. From 2020 to mid-2021 the covid situation had led to a dramatic loss of human life worldwide and presented an unprecedented challenge to public health, food systems and the world of work. Just when the world was gradually on unlock mode, the sudden surge in covid cases globally has cast a shadow of gloom. The economic and social disruption caused by the pandemic is devastating: tens of millions of people are still risk of falling into extreme poverty, while the number of undernourished people, currently estimated at nearly around 700 million, could increase further by the end of the year. The main factor of concern is the adverse affect on food. The pandemic has been affecting the entire food system and has laid bare its fragility. Farmers have been most affected during the two-year pandemic restrictions when there were ban on border movement, trade restrictions and confinement measures which prevented them from accessing markets, including for buying inputs and selling their produce, and agricultural workers from harvesting crops, thus disrupting domestic and international food supply chains and reducing access to healthy, safe and diverse diets. In addition, the world is still suffering from the huge impact of the pandemic due to decimated jobs and placing millions of livelihoods at risk. In the COVID-19 crisis food security, public health, and employment and labour issues, in particular workers’ health and safety, converge. The largest disruption of Covid in history has been on education, having already had a near universal impact on learners and teachers around the world, from pre-primary to secondary schools, technical and vocational education and training (TVET) institutions, universities, adult learning, and skills development establishments. As many as 40 million children worldwide have missed out on early childhood education in their critical pre-school year due to covid. Children also missed a stimulating and enriching environment, learning opportunities, social interaction and in some cases adequate nutrition. The adverse impact on education is likely to compromise the children’s longer-term healthy development, especially those from poor and disadvantaged families. Though there are many critical areas affected, yet the world have suffered most in agriculture and education.

Post-mortem

Employers must prioritise employee wellness

T

he pandemic is revolutionising wellness among people and organisations. Covid-19 has changed the perception of health and fitness, both at home and in the workplace. It has presented us with opportunities to improve wellness and its parameters, such as mental health, financial stability, relationships and work-life balance, and take those to a higher level. Personal wellbeing is no longer the responsibility of only individuals and doctors, but also that of employers and HR leaders. Things that employers can do to prioritise the wellness agenda for employees in 2022: Teleconsultations In the world of technology, more doctors are using online healthcare platforms to connect with patients through video conference or phone calls. It saves time and money

as well as ensures social distancing. Employers can tie up with these teleconsultation apps to offer the workforce quick, free and real-time access to a team of healthcare professionals both on working and non-working days. Since the outbreak and especially during the second wave, teleconsultations came to the rescue of desperate patients, connecting them with doctors, hospitals and e-pharmacies. According to a report, the teleconsultation segment in India is expected to grow at a CAGR of 72% and valued at over $800 million by 2024. Hence, in 2022, we can expect more businesses, including SMEs and early-stage startups, to adopt teleconsultations for their employees. Wellness programmes In 2021, several organisations offered their employees routine health

check-ups and wellness programmes, which, apart from Covid-19, covered diabetes, stress, cardiac health, fitness, yoga and meditation, and nutrition among others. In the coming year, we can expect more corporates to unveil wellness programmes that serve the distinct needs of their employees, and accord equal priority to productivity and health in the workplace. With more and more young people falling ill, and even succumbing, to lifestyle-related diseases, it is imperative that companies give as much attention to employee wellbeing as to balance sheets. Relationship counselling Healthy personal and sound professional relationships are key to satisfaction in the workplace. Companies are integrating relationship counselling sessions into employee health

benefit plans to reduce stress levels and improve mental wellbeing, and by extension, performance. Employers can provide access to self-help apps and organise workshops that result in better employeremployee and employeeto-employee engagement. Health insurance Financial wellbeing is directly linked to employee wellbeing. Money, or the lack of it, is a major stress factor and often the cause of underperformance at work, resulting in health problems such as hypertension, cardiac and other illnesses. Employers can provide employees and their immediate families – usually parents, spouses and children – with adequate health insurance or increase the cover in the event they already have one in place. This can go a long way in mitigating the financial risks that employ-

ees face, particularly during a health crisis. Work-life balance Covid-19 has underscored the importance of work-life balance. In spite of work from home and the new hybrid model, a healthy work-life balance remains key to employee wellness and productivity. We saw how, during the WFH setup last year, many employees were stressed as they juggled their work obligations with household chores. I believe, in 2022, employers must adopt a hybrid work model where employees spend two or three days of the week in the office and for the rest, work remotely. This will do wonders for their mental and physical health. Alternate therapies The pandemic has only exacerbated problems that employees have been facing, whether it is a hectic lifestyle, peer

pressure, financial woes, health issues or the lack of opportunities. Given this rather dismal scenario, employers should make alternate therapies, including yoga and meditation, an integral part of the work culture. These and other stress-relieving techniques can help the workforce deal better with day-to-day problems at home or at work and improve their overall outlook on life. With a vast majority of employees in the formal sector reporting burnout from work or workplace-related stress, it is important that the corporate sector flags employee fatigue and go beyond traditional work and health-related benefits to ensure the occupational, mental, physical, emotional and social wellness of their employees. Year 2022 gives us a chance to start anew. Kaustov Kashyap Jail Road, Jorhat

The fitness sector will boom in the post Covid era On mandatory vaccination

P

eople have grown more aware of the need of having a healthy lifestyle since the coronavirus pandemic. The epidemic presented many challenges to the world, but it also made each individual more accountable for their own health. People are more aware of what they eat and drink, as well as what type of workout they should do and how to maintain a healthy diet. The ongoing Covid era with the importance on health and fitness, is making the industry witness rapid change as demands for health and well-being increase. A well-balanced diet is necessary, but many diets do not provide significant amounts of essential vitamins and minerals, which can help people who have insufficient dietary sources. As a result, people are now seeking personalised nutrition solutions tailored to their unique lifestyles. Consumers are looking for supplements, vitamins, and minerals to fill in the gaps and to combat the virus and build strong immunity,

indicating that they are looking for a well-focused solution for their inactive lifestyle. Consumers’ emphasis on preventative healthcare has also contributed to the sector’s rise. During the epidemic, it proved to be a vital line of defence, demonstrating that the dietary supplements industry is a solid economic partner to the people. Immunityboosting supplements have become popular, resulting in major changes in purchasing patterns and market behaviour. Aside from that, the rising prevalence of lifestyle disorders such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes, hyperlipidemia, obesity, and blood pressure is driving higher dietary supplement sales in the country. Furthermore, as the ageing population grows, there is a growing interest in preventive healthcare. Immunity boosters are likewise in high demand all around the world. According to a recent study, 75 percent of Indians believe that taking vitamins, minerals, and

supplements (VMS) on a daily basis aids their overall health and fitness. Furthermore, more than threequarters (76 percent) of Indian consumers feel that VMS can supply essential nutrition that is lacking in their diet, and that frequent use of VMS helps to avoid illnesses and diseases for 37 out of 50 Indians. Sports nutrition and supplements are essential for maintaining a healthy diet and improving athletic performance. Rapid growth in nutritional product consumption will accelerate market expansion as athletes become more aware of the benefits of supplements in maintaining fitness. People are taking supplements for a variety of reasons, including better sleep and improved mental health, as the pandemic was a life-changing experience that created stress and anxiety for many. Individuals’ disposable income is rising, and their awareness is rising, making it easier for them to consume dietary supplements to meet their daily nutritional needs. Further-

other hand, are what keep it going. It’s something that both parties should work on. Do you get up early to say your goodbyes before he goes for work? When he arrives home, do you get a kiss? Even after courtship, if you practice simple things, the spark will stay. It’s up to you both to keep it alive. The “nomeansyes” trope: This is a difficult one. It’s difficult because social media has discovered a technique to persuade us to believe in an idea that is neither pragmatic nor realistic. We have a tendency to believe that the one person with whom our timing was off, the one who slipped away, would someday return to us. Wouldn’t someone who is so ideal for you find a method to communicate with you? Yes, there are times when this genuinely works. However, it’s definitely better to let someone leave with no expectations for the future. Allow the last chapter to come to a close and look forward to the next. There’s a reason for everything. Perhaps the pages in your book that were set aside for the person have ran out. You should allow yourself to consider a re-read if the stars mysteriously align. The perfect person: Sorry to break it to you, but this is also a myth. Why?

Because there is no such thing as a flawless human. We see flawless portrayals of individuals in the media because a playwright has painstakingly crafted them. This could be their idealised version of what someone should be. There is a fact that you should quit looking for someone who is perfect in every way. Are you flawless? Look for someone whose goals and values align with yours. Most crucial, aim for a relationship where you can adore each other’s great as well as unfavorable aspects. Love is accepting each other’s flaws as well. For us, social media generates illusions. We cling to illusions that help us build our ideals and notions about what love should be like. Let go of those illusions. Love is more about acts than it is about the flawless picture. Perhaps we should take a different approach. Instead of waiting for them to make the first move, if you truly love someone, you should be bold enough to take action, to make the grand gesture at the end of the movie, and to profess your love. Instead of ideals, perhaps what we should take away from social media is the power to find answers and take control. Shahzeen Shivdasani, IANSlife

more, strong marketing and promotional techniques for the promotion of dietary supplements are likely to have a beneficial impact on the market’s growth. It’s true that the need for supplements arises from a desire to strengthen one’s immune system. According to a recent poll on dietary supplements in India, over 67 percent of respondents who take dietary supplements or nutraceuticals increased their frequency of use during the coronavirus epidemic. The pandemic undoubtedly highlighted the necessity of leading a healthy lifestyle and has altered the way we live today. Wellness is here to stay, as consumers aim to spend more on their own health, attractiveness, fitness, and other aspects of their lives. If the epidemic has taught us anything, it is that physical and mental health will continue to be a top issue for millions of people all over the world for a long time. he affidavit filed by the Central govt. in the Supreme Court made it clear that the order, GR, SOP, by Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, and other state govt./District Collector about vaccine mandates is illegal. The Supreme Court asked the petitioner to make all the states that are making such mandates as party respondent. The Central govt. said, in their counter affidavit dated 28th November 2021, that vaccines are not mandatory, and any services or benefits are not attached to vaccination. The Manipur High Court order on vaccination was passed in line with the Mizoram HC. And legally, if the judgement of a lower court order is not overruled by the Supreme Court of India, then the judgement applies to all the states and its citizens. If no authority, including the vaccine manufacturer, claims that the vaccine is safe and will not cause any complications and has foolproof guarantee that the said person will neither

get infected nor spread the virus, why is the state govt. making it mandatory for its citizens to take the vaccine, which is in violation of the court order and also the fundamental rights guaranteed under the Constitution of India? The state government has issued a directive dated 8th Jan 2022, directing all students of Class 9 and above who have completed 15 years of age to take the vaccine against Covid-19 in order to be able to take admission/attend regular normal classes. This should not be made mandatory by the state govt. or by schools and institutions as it is stripping a person’s fundamental right of freedom of choice, which has been enshrined in the Indian Constitution. It should be left to the individual concerned whether to take the vaccine or not. It is therefore requested that the state government withdraw the directive for mandatory vaccination and leave it for the individuals to decide on the matter. Temjen Longkumer Lower PR Hill, Kohima.

DailyDevotion Have You Ever Been Alone with God? (2) How social media effect perception of love Looks like the pandemic/Covid virus is When He was alone…the twelve asked Him about the parable. —Mark 4:10

His Solitude with Us. When God gets us alone through suffering, heartbreak, temptation, disappointment, sickness, or by thwarted desires, a broken friendship, or a new friendship— when He gets us absolutely alone, and we are totally speechless, unable to ask even one question, then He begins to teach us. Notice Jesus Christ’s training of the Twelve. It was the disciples, not the crowd outside, who were confused. His disciples constantly asked Him questions, and He constantly explained things to them, but they didn’t understand until after they received the Holy Spirit (see John 14:26). As you journey with God, the only thing He intends to be clear is the way He deals with your soul. The sorrows and difficulties in the lives of others will be absolutely confusing to you. We think we understand another person’s struggle until God reveals the same shortcomings in our lives. There are vast areas of stubbornness and ignorance the Holy Spirit has to reveal in each of us, but it can only be done when Jesus gets us alone. Are we alone with Him now? Or are we more concerned with our own ideas, friendships, and cares for our bodies? Jesus cannot teach us anything until we quiet all our intellectual questions and get alone with Him.

any of us don’t genuinely compare true love, but we draw similarities from films and television shows. Doesnt that make you think? Do you ever wonder why people seem to have bought into an idea of love, which is designed for amusement? Social media impacts our perceptions of true love and what it should look like. Let’s have a look at some of the tools it employs. High passion: This is defined as ensuring that your partnership is satisfied every day. It means that both partners are entirely satisfied with their relationship at all times. Each person is constantly filled with butterflies for the other. This is just one aspect of your union when you truly fall in love and are a member of a solid relationship. You’ll have off-days and days when you’d rather share something emotionally with each other than physically. You’ll have days when you don’t want to talk at all. True love is when you can sit in a room with someone and be at ease in silence. Romance: It’s all about the romance in the movies: the flowers, the fancy dinners, the mansion and valuing your life over his. It’s critical to value romance. Small things, on the

tarting from 2020, the virus learned where not to trea d. He knows why he should not rub people in the wrong way. Especially in places, where emotions are running high and public protest are vision focused, he knows, he better stay out. If not, he (the Covid virus) will be mocked and people will throw him out and the Pandemic will stop immediately. If you don’t believe it, look at the farmers protest, it happened in Delhi outskirts for nearly two years. No outbreak of the Pandemic, unlike it’s immediate neighborhood places where covid outbreak was happening at intervals!!! Coming back at Election Rallies, you see politicians wearing no mask and maintaining no social distance. Forget about the sea of human crowd, we all know it. But again, only after the last lap of political rally is done, the virus strike again. It’s like, scratch my back and I scratch yours, if it happens when political rally is at its peak, he knows he will be thrown out. So finally, when all is done, he gracefully comes in. In Afghanistan too, during the Taliban take

over, the virus - Pandemic, though it was suppose to peak during that time, it remained silent. Only after Afghanistan was taken over by Taliban, it showed up mildly. Nagaland too, Christmas time came, many churches fed up with the lockdown held crusade, conferences and many weddings were done and not forgetting the Hornbill, street carnival and Night Bazaar that happened with crowds attendance in thousands. No outbreak during those time’s, not even during the sad Oting incident. On 10 &11 January, 2022,in the Rally for Oting incident, with the crowd on the march from Dmp to Khma, winding up in khma Raj Bhavan, forget the social distancing or masking, emotions were high, to demand removal of AFSPA and justice for Oting victims. Which we should all support and self too am in support of it and joined it too for few kilometers. The picture and video going viral speaks for itself, none was bothered about social distancing and masking. My point is, the Virus doesn’t just Mutate, but it’s also very wise, it knows where not to strike,

especially when Public emotions are high and crowd are in no mood to entertain it. So, as two precious year’s of our school and college going children are destroyed and many business closed down, common men made to suffer economically, mentally, emotionally...., why not lose our patience for Covid and the Pandemic, why not throw it out. Wasim Rizvi alias Jitendra Narayan Tyagi is in custody in Haridwar on January 13, 2022 after his arrest in connection Haridwar hate speech case. (PTI).

DEHRADUN, JAN 13 (PTI): The Uttarakhand Police on Thursday made the first arrest in the Dharma Sansad hate speech case nabbing Waseem Rizvi who is now known as Jitendra Narayan Tyagi from Roorkee in Haridwar district, and issued notices to two other key accused Yati Narsimhananda and Sadhvi Annapurna for appearance before it. All the three are named along with others in the FIRs lodged in connection with the case. While Rizvi has been arrested, notices for appearance under Section 41 A of the CrPC have been sent to Yati Narasimhanand and Sadhvi Annapurna, Uttarakhand DGP Ashok Kumar told PTI.

Yati Narasimhanand is the controversial priest of the Dasna Temple in Ghaziabad who had organised the Dharma Sansad in Haridwar, while Sadhvi Annapurna was one of the speakers at the event where highly provocative speeches were allegedly made against Muslims. Waseem Rizvi was arrested from Narsan border in Roorkee, Haridwar Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Yogendra Rawat told PTI. Rizvi who changed his name to Jitendra Narayan Tyagi after converting to Hinduism is among more than 10 people named in the FIRs lodged in connection with the case. He was formerly the head of Uttar Pradesh Shia

Waqf Board. This is the first arrest in the case. When asked whether more arrests will follow, the SSP said it will depend on how the investigation progresses. The Uttarakhand government has been under tremendous pressure from different quarters to take action against those who had delivered the speeches at the event. Even the Supreme Court had pulled up the state government on Wednesday for not acting against the guilty though so many days have passed after the incident. Some participants at the Dharma Sansad held in Haridwar from December 17-19 have been accused of delivering highly provocative speeches.

AHMEDABAD, JAN 13 (PTI): Union Home Minister Amit Shah will visit Gujarat for two days during which he would launch a scheme pertaining to organic farming on Saturday, a state BJP leader said on Thursday. Shah is expected to arrive here on Thursday night and there are no public events planned during his visit, state BJP’s media coordinator Yagnesh Dave said. Though Shah celebrates ‘Uttarayan’ festival by flying kites with family members and party workers every year on January 14, the minister will stay away from the celebrations on Friday in the wake of the death of a close relative, he said. “Shah would mostly remain at his residence in the city on Friday. On January 15, he will launch an organic farming scheme at an event to be held at Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel’s official residence in Gandhinagar,” he said. Shah, who is a Member of Parliament from Gandhinagar, is also likely to review the progress of various developmental works and implementation of government schemes in his constituency, according to sources.

Karnataka Congress temporarily halts Mekedatu rally due to Covid concerns RAMANAGARA (K’TAKA), JAN 13 (PTI): Karnataka Congress has decided to temporarily halt its Mekedatu padayatra, due to COVID-19 concerns and in the interest of public health, Leader of Opposition in the state Assembly Siddaramaiah said on Thursday. Asserting that the Congress party was not halting its padayatra fearing cases being booked against its leaders or because of the BJP government’s orders prohibiting it, he said, they will continue their march once the COVID third wave declines and the curbs are relaxed. “We are concerned about the health of the people in Karnataka, it is our responsibility to see to it that the COVID doesn’t spread because of our padayatra, despite taking all the necessary measures we had concerns, so we discussed today. We don’t want people to feel that we are responsible for worsening COVID situation,” Siddaramaiah said. Speaking to reporters here after meeting with party leaders and legislators, he noted that the padayatra was to reach Bengaluru by tomorrow evening, where COVID cases are high. “...so we have decided to temporarily halt this padayatra here. Once the third wave declines and COVID-19 rules are relaxed, we will continue the remaining

distance of the padayatra from Ramanagara,” he said, as he appealed to party workers not to lose spirit and requested their cooperation. The Congress’ decision to halt the padayatra is following the High Court’s strong observations and government’s last night orders prohibiting inter-district and intra-district (within Ramanagara) movement of vehicles and persons for participating in it. Also, several party leaders including Leader of Opposition in Rajya Sabha Mallikarjun Kharge, who had attended the inaugural of the padayatra on January 9, have tested positive for COVID. The Karnataka High Court on Wednesday had questioned the state government as to why it allowed

the Congress’ padayatra, which is being held in violation of its COVID curbs, and why no appropriate action was taken by the authorities to restrain the march. It has also asked the Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) whether it had obtained permission for the padayatra and whether measures have been taken in compliance with Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) prescribed by the government to prevent the COVID-19 spread. The court has asked both the state government as well as the Congress to respond by Friday. Earlier on Thursday, Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai had appealed to Siddaramaiah and KPCC President D K Shivakumar to call off their padyatra.

However, N95 masks can be inconvenient during strenuous physical activities or prolonged wearing. Cloth masks can be coupled with surgical masks to offer in-creased protection with more comfortability than the N95 masks. The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare has said that N-95 mask/respirator have filter ef-ficiency of 95 per cent or more against particulate aerosols. The mask should be provided with expiration valve, should be disposable and fit for wide range of face sizes. It should accom-pany certification from National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) or equivalent certification. The Ministry’s revised guidelines for home isolation said a Covid-19 patient should, at all times, use triple layer medical mask. “They should discard mask after eight hours of use or earlier if the mask becomes wet or visibly soiled. In the event of caregiver entering the room, both caregiver and patient may preferably consider using N-95 mask. The mask should be dis-carded after cutting them to pieces and putting them in a paper bag for a minimum of 72 hours.”

Covid-19: Kolkata records Cong, BJP main contestants in Goa; AAP, TMC will split non-BJP vote: Chidambaram 60.29 pc weekly positivity rate leaders, sarpanches, etc.,” he said. “In the early days, the TMC’s general secretary had declared that the TMC would contest in all the 40 seats and their aggressive approach seemed consistent with that objective. Some days ago, however, the TMC hinted that it would like to form an alliance with the P Chidambaram Congress and other parties. I think the AICC leadership TMC’s strategy of taking was aware of the TMC’s in Congress leaders and then recently hinting at an alliance with all Opposition parties including the Congress, Chidambaram refused to directly comment on their strategy but said the Congress was “dismayed” when the TMC “lured” its MLAs to its fold. “We received credible reports that the TMC was actively poaching our members including block-level

desire and the AICC leadership may have responded to TMC,” he said. “I have no official word or instruction from the AICC on the subject matter,” Chidambaram added. His remarks come days after TMC’s Goa in-charge Mahua Moitra’s tweet on Opposition unity set off speculation over a possible grand alliance including the Congress and the TMC in

Goa. However, the Congress has dismissed talk of alliance with the TMC with AICC general secretary (organisation) K C Venugopal tweeting on Monday, “The rumour in circulation that a possible alliance with TMC was discussed by Shri @RahulGandhi in today’s meeting is completely baseless & untrue.” “Let me assure that the Congress party is con-

fident- we will put Goa back on the path to progress soon,” he had said. Asked if he believes that it would be a Congress versus BJP fight in Goa and the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and the Trinamool Congress (TMC) would remain on the fringes, Chidmabaram said every observer of Goa will agree that the two main contestants in Goa are the Congress and the BJP.

Chidambaram, who is the Congress’ senior election observer for the Goa Assembly polls, also said that some days ago, the TMC hinted that it would like to form an alliance with the Congress and other parties and the AICC leadership was aware of the TMC’s desire and may have responded to it, but he has “no official word or instruction” from the AICC on the matter. In an interview with PTI, Chidambaram said there is a strong and intense “anti-BJP, anti-incumbency wind” blowing in Goa, and his party would appeal to the electorate that “Goa should be ruled by Goans”. New Chinese enclaves in Bhutan show 166 buildings and road NEW DELHI, JAN 13 (AGENCIES): High-resolution satellite imagery sourced by NDTV confirms that China may be constructing at least two large, interconnected villages well within the territory of Bhutan. These lie less than 30 km from the Doklam plateau where India and China had a tense stand-off in 2017 when Indian soldiers physically blocked Chinese road construction activity. Since then, China has bypassed Indian positions to resume road construction activity from another axis, just nine kilometres from the Doklam face-off site. It has also constructed at least one full-fledged village, first identified by NDTV, with satellite images in November 2020. According to Damien Symon, a leading GEOINT researcher at Intel Lab, who first identified the new sites in November last year, this is ‘’irrefutable evidence of ongoing construction and development activity in an area disputed

by China and Bhutan.’’ The images show “multiple ‘chalet-like’ struc-tures [which] are visible, with more under construction.’’ It is also clear that there is more construction underway. ‘’In addition, heavy machinery and earth moving equipment is observed preparing similar pockets of land for future use.’’ This is connected with a well-developed road network that connects the settlements. It remains unclear, at this stage, where these settlements are meant to station military forces or

are, essentially, a territorial grab of the land of a nation which is essentially defenceless against the might of China’s armed forces. Bhutan and China have been in border talks for over four decades and while the outcome of these has never been revealed, there has never been any international declaration by Thimpu handing over an inch of its territory to China. Bhutan has, historically, always relied on India, not just as a net-security provider but as an ally with

a say in its foreign policy. While Bhutan’s foreign policy decisions are now seen to be entirely inde-pendent, India and Bhutan remain extremely close allies, with Thimpu being well aware of New Delhi’s concerns on Chinese expansionism. Geo-strategist and author Brahma Chellaney said, “China’s ramping up of construction of milita-rised border villages, including inside Bhutanese territory, holds two-fold implications for Indian security. Firstly, China’s construction is opening a potential military axis against India’s so-called chicken-neck from a different direction than the one Indian forces blocked during the 2017 Doklam standoff. Secondly, India is Bhutan’s de facto security guarantor, and Chinese construction activity violating Bhutanese territorial sovereignty could be aimed at undermining the Bhutan-India rela-tionship and compelling Thimphu to accede to Chinese demands.”

Israel grants ID cards to 1,000 Palestinians in WB RAMALLAH, JAN 13 (IANS): Israeli authorities have granted identification cards to 1,000 Palestinians living in the West Bank (WB), allowing them to continue to stay without fear of being deported, a Minis-ter said. The move “came in light of the understandings on August 30, 2021 between the Palestinian and Israeli sides which allowed the resumption of work on these family reunification applications for Palestinians in the West Bank and Gaza Strip”, Xinhua news agency quoted Hussein al-Sheikh, Pal-estinian minister of civil affairs, as saying. The Minister said that his office could get Israel to approve the applications for citizenship and will continue to follow up on thousands of other names sent to the Israeli side. The applications included requests for identity cards and the issue of changing addresses between the West Bank and Gaza Strip, he said.

Hope ‘relevant people’ will refrain from making ‘unconstructive comments’: China BEIJING, JAN 13 (PTI): China said on Thursday that it hopes “relevant people” in India will refrain from making “unconstructive comments”, a day after Chief of Army Staff Gen M M Naravane stat-ed that threat in eastern Ladakh has “by no means reduced” and the Indian Army will continue to deal with the Chinese military in a “firm” and “resolute” manner. In his press conference on Wednesday ahead of the Army Day on January 15, Gen Naravane also said that war or conflict is always an “instrument of last resort” but if it is thrust upon India, then the country will come out victorious. His comments came on a day India and China held the 14th round of Corps Commander level talks to resolve the military standoff in eastern Ladakh. Asked for his reaction to Gen Naravane’s comments, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Wang Wenbin told a media briefing here on Thursday that “now China and India have

Wang Wenbin

been in communi-cation and dialogue through diplomatic and military channels to ease the border tension”. “We hope relevant people on the Indian side will refrain from making unconstructive remarks,” he said in response to a question from the Western media. About the Corps Commander-level talks, Wang said “regarding the 14th Commander level meet-ing, we will release information if there is any”. H ow e ve r, s o u r c e s in the security establishment in New Delhi said on Wednesday that India pressed for an early disengagement of troops in the remaining friction points in

eastern Ladakh at the 14th round of military talks with China which took place at the Chushul-Moldo border point on the Chinese side of the Line of Actual. The Indian side also insisted on disengagement as soon as possible in all the remaining friction points including resolution of issues in Depsang Bulge and Demchok. The 13th round of talks had taken place on October 10 and they ended in a stalemate. The eastern Ladakh border standoff between the Indian and Chinese militaries erupted on May 5, 2020, following a violent clash in the Pangong lake areas. Both sides gradually enhanced their de-ployment by rushing in tens of thousands of soldiers as well as heavy weaponry. As a result of a series of military and diplomatic talks, the two sides completed the disengagement process last year in the north and south banks of the Pangong lake and in the Gogra area.

AstraZeneca vaccine as third dose ‘US discourages India from acquiring Russian S-400 missile’ effective against Omicron: Study

LONDON, JAN 13 (PTI): The AstraZeneca Vaxzevaria vaccine showed an increased antibody re-sponse to the Omicron variant of COVID-19 after a third booster dose, preliminary data released by the AngloSwedish biopharma major said on Thursday. In an ongoing safety and immunogenicity trial of the vaccine, a formulation developed by Oxford University and administered in India as Covishield, it was found that given as a third dose increased the body’s immune response to Beta,

Delta, Alpha and Gamma SARS-CoV-2 variants. A separate analysis of samples from the trial showed increased antibody response to the Omicron variant. The results were observed among individuals previously vaccinated with either Vaxzevria or an mRNA vaccine. “Vaxzevria has protected hundreds of millions of people from COVID-19 around the world and these data show that it has an important role to play as a third dose booster, including when used after other vaccines,” said Sir Mene

Pangalos, Executive Vice President, BioPharmaceuticals R&D, AstraZeneca. “Given the ongoing urgency of the pandemic and Vaxzevria’s increased immune response to the Omicron variant, we will continue to progress regulatory submissions around the world for its use as a third dose booster,” he said. The company said it is submitting this additional data to health authorities around the world given the urgent need for third dose boosters. A separate Phase IV trial reported in a preprint with ‘The Lancet’ journal showed that a third dose of Vaxzevria substantially increased antibody levels following a primary vaccine series with Coro-naVac (Sinovac Biotech). AstraZeneca said this data adds to the growing body of evidence supporting Vaxzevria as a third dose booster, irrespective of the primary vaccination schedules tested.

WASHINGTON, JAN 13 (PTI): The US is “discouraging” India from acquiring S-400 missile defence systems from Russia but Washington will have to weigh “important geostrategic considerations” on growing calls for a presidential CAATSA waiver to New Delhi, President Joe Biden’s nominee for Coordinator for Sanctions Policy has told lawmakers. The US has already imposed sanctions on Turkey under the CAATSA for the purchase of a batch of S-400 missile defence systems from Russia. In October 2018, India signed a USD 5 billion deal with Russia to buy five units of the S-400 air de-fence missile systems, despite a warning from the then Trump administration that going ahead with the contract may invite US sanctions. The Biden administration has not yet clarified whether it will impose sanctions on India under the provisions of the Countering America’s Adversaries

Through Sanctions Act (CAATSA) for procuring the S-400 missile systems. CAATSA is a tough US law that was brought in 2017 and authorises the US administration to impose sanctions on countries that purchase major defence hardware from Russia. James O’Brien, President Biden’s nominee for the US State Department’s coordinator for sanctions policy was asked at his confirmation hearing on Wednesday if the US experience with Turkey provided any warning or les-

sons on how to proceed with India. Following the US sanctions on Turkey over the procurement of S-400 missile systems, there were apprehensions that Washington may impose similar punitive measures on India. Russia has been one of India’s key major suppliers of arms and ammunition. “I believe they are very different circumstances, and, of course, different security partnerships -- but how do you believe we should think about the possibility of sanctioning our

Pakistani passport 4th worst in the world NEW DELHI, JAN 13 (IANS): The Pakistani passport has been ranked as the fourth worst for interna-tional travel for the third consecutive year, with visa-free or visa-onarrival access to 31 destinations around the world, according to the Henley Passport Index 2022. The Henley Passport Index, which is a ranking of all the world’s passports according to the number of destinations their holders can access without a prior visa, placed Pakistan on the 108th position, The News International reported. Henley & Partners firm’s “Henley Passport Index” has been regularly

monitoring the world’s most travel-friendly passports since 2006. The increasing travel barriers that have been introduced over the course of the Covid-19 pandemic have resulted in the widest global mobility gap in the index’s 16-year history, said the report. The index doesn’t take temporary restrictions into account, so leaving actual current travel access aside, holders of the passports

at the top of its ranking -Japan and Singapore -- are able, in theo-ry, to travel visa-free to 192 destinations. That’s 166 more destinations than Afghan nationals, who sit at the bottom of the index of 199 passports, and can access just 26 countries without requiring a visa in advance. Further down the top 10, the rankings remain virtually unchanged as we enter the first quarter of 2022. South Korea is tied with Germany in second place (with a score of 190) and Finland, Italy, Luxembourg and Spain are all together in third place (with a score of 189), the report said.

The US holds no official position on who owns what features in the sea, but maintains the absolute right to operate in what it insists are international waters. That includes sailing Navy warships past Chinese-held features, including artificial islands equipped with airstrips and other military facilities. The US report said Beijing’s claim “has no legal basis and is asserted by (China) without speci-

ficity as to the nature or geographic extent of the historic rights’ claimed.” The US study also said that China’s claim to sovereignty covering more than 100 features sub-merged at high tide were inconsistent with international law; that its enclosure of vast areas of the sea was unsupported by international law; and that its practice of claiming maritime zones based on labelling each island group as a whole was “not permitted by international law.” China’s “expansive maritime claims in the South China Sea are incon-

sistent with international law as reflected in the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea,” the study said. “The overall effect of these maritime claims is that (China) unlawfully claims sovereignty or some form of exclusive jurisdiction over most of the South China Sea,” it said. In his response, Wang said the US “arbitrarily misinterprets the convention, engages in political manipulation with multiple standards for its own selfish interests, and undermines the internation-al rule of law.”

The S-400 is known as Russia’s most advanced long-range surface-to-air missile defence system. Senator Young said India was currently taking delivery of the Russian S-400 system and was also in the process of acquiring new frigate ships from Russia. “Both are important systems for the Indians,” he said. “India is a vital ally in our competition against China, and thus, I believe we should resist taking any actions that might drive them away from us and the Quad. I am therefore strongly supportive of waiving CAATSA sanctions against India, given our shared foreign policy interests,” he said.

BEIJING, JAN 13 (AP): China on Thursday defended its “historical rights” to virtually the entire South China Sea, following a new US government report saying Beijing’s claims are almost entirely invalid. Fo r e i g n M i n i s t r y spokesperson Wang Wenbin called the State Department report “Limits in the Seas,” issued this month, an attempt to “distort international law, confuse the public, sow discord and disrupt the regional situation.” “China has historical rights in the South China Sea. China’s sovereignty

friends and not just threats?” Senator Todd Young asked O’Brien, a former career employee of the State Depart-ment. In response, O’Brien said it was difficult to compare the two situations, with a NATO ally that is breaking with legacy defence procurement systems, and then with India, a partner of growing im-portance, but that has legacy relationships with Russia. “The administration has made clear that it is discouraging India from proceeding with the acquisitions of Russian equipment, and there are important geostrategic considerations, particularly with (unintelligible) relationship to China. So, I think we have to look at what the balance is,” he said. “And, of course, India’s got some decisions in front of it, so it would be premature to say more. But this is something I look forward to working with you and other interested members,” O’Brien said. India pursues an independent foreign policy and

SAG Awards noms: ‘Squid Game’ makes history, ‘Yellowstone’ finally gets nod

N

etflix’s blockbuster original show ‘Squid Game’ has made history at the 2022 Screen Actors Guild (SAG) Awards by becoming the first non-English-language (and first Korean) series to score a nomination, reports ‘Variety’. The awards will be announced on February 27. Another headlinemaker in the nominations announced on Wednesday was ‘Yellowstone’, the Kevin Costner-led blockbuster series now in its fourth season. After being ignored by all major awards events in its three previous seasons, ‘Yellowstone’ picked up a nomination in the company of ‘Succession’, ‘The Morning Show’ and ‘The Handmaid’s Tale’. One of the biggest shows on television, streaming on Prime Video in India, Paramount Network’s ‘Yellowstone’ is set for a fifth season. The series follows the conflicts along the shared borders of a large cattle ranch, an Indian reservation, and land developers. Among films, Ridley Scott’s ‘House of Gucci’, and Jane Campion’s ‘Power of the Dog’ led all films with three nominations each.

‘Power of the Dog’, which has benefited from a big awards push from Netflix, according to Variety’, failed to capture a best ensemble nomination. Nominees for that prize, considered to be the most prestigious handed out by the guild, included ‘House of Gucci’, as well as ‘Belfast’, ‘CODA’,’Don’t Look Up’ and ‘King Richard’. Stars such Will Smith (‘King Richard’), Lady Gaga (‘House of Gucci’),

Olivia Colman (‘The Lost Daughter’), Jeremy Strong (‘Succession’) and Jennifer Anniston (‘The Morning Show’) find themselves among the nominations. On the OTT/television front, ‘Succession’, a boardroom drama about the family behind a media conglomerate, and ‘Ted Lasso’, a feel-good soccer comedy, scored a leading five nominations. ‘Mare of Easttown’, ‘The Morning Show’, and

‘Squid Game’ landed four nominations apiece. Described by ‘Variety’ as a water-cooler phenomenon, ‘Squid Game’, in a first for a foreign-language production, picked up nominations for actor in a drama series (Lee Jung-jae), actress in a drama series (Jung Hoyeon), and also stunt ensemble. Since premiering on Netflix in September 2021, according to ‘Variety’, the series has emerged as a global phenomenon. The

drama garnered 1.65 billion hours of viewing during its first four weeks of release, surpassing ‘Bridgerton’ as the most-watched Netflix original series in history. The show landed three Golden Globe Awards, including best television drama, and earned O Yeong-su a supporting actor prize. ‘Squid Game’ also boasts of three Critics Choice Awards nominations and a Gotham Award win for breakthrough series. While the pandemic affected people from all walks of life, children were the most affected. Several studies have shown that the pandemic has not only robbed kids their playtime and social interactions, it has also affected their motor and communication skills, Nature reported. A team of researchers at the NewYork-Presbyterian Morgan Stanley Children’s Hospital along with those from Columbia University in New York City analysed neuro-developmental differences between babies born before and during the pandemic. While most newborn babies at the hospital exposed to Covid-19 seemed to do just fine, the study findings showed that the infants born during the pandemic scored lower, on average, on tests of gross motor, fine motor and communication skills compared with those born before it (both groups were assessed by their parents using an established questionnaire). Importantly, it didn’t matter whether their parents had been infected with the virus or not; there seemed to be

something about the environment of the pandemic itself, the report said. The pandemic induced lockdowns isolated many young families, robbing them of playtime and social interactions. Another study led by researchers at Brown University’s Advanced Baby Imaging Lab, found that babies motor, visual and language skills dipped during the pandemic. The findings, posted on a preprint server and which may soon appear in JAMA Pediatrics, showed that the pandemic-born babies scored almost two standard deviations lower than those born before it on a suite of tests that measure development in a similar way to IQ tests. The team also found that babies from low-income families experienced the largest drops, that boys

were more affected than girls, and that gross motor skills were affected the most. The longer the pandemic has continued, the more deficits children have accumulated. “The magnitude is massive - it’s just astonishing,” Sean Deoni, a medical biophysicist from the lab was quoted as saying. Although children have generally fared well when infected with SARSCoV-2, preliminary research also suggests that pandemic-related stress during pregnancy could be negatively affecting foetal brain development in some children. A team from the University of Calgary in Canada surveyed more than 8,000 pregnant people during the pandemic. The study posted preprint showed that babies born to people who reported more prenatal distress - more anxiety or depression symptoms - showed different structural connections between their amygdala a brain region involved in emotional processing, and their prefrontal cortex - an area responsible for executive functioning skills, the report said. Chelsea ease past Spurs into League Cup final LO N D O N, JA N 1 3 (AGENCIES): Chelsea beat London rivals Tottenham Hotspur 1-0 thanks to Antonio Rudiger’s firsthalf goal to complete an emphatic 3-0 aggregate triumph in the League Cup semi-final on Wednesday. Leading 2-0 from last week’s one-sided first leg at Stamford Bridge, defender Rudiger gave Tottenham a mountain to climb when he bundled home from Mason Mount’s corner in the 18th minute. Tottenham battled hard in search of a route back into the tie but it was not to be their night as two penalties awarded either side of halftime by Andre Marriner were both overturned after VAR interventions. To rub salt into their wounds Harry Kane also had a goal ruled out for offside after yet another VAR check. Chelsea, who face Manchester City in the Premier League on Saturday, eased off in the second half but were comfortable enough in the end and will try to claim the League Cup for a sixth time in the final against Liverpool or Arsenal. Liverpool host Arsenal in the first leg of their semi-final on Thursday.

“We’re happy with the result. In the first half we were the better team and we deserved to be up,” Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel said. “We lost concentration and lost focus in the last 15 minutes of the first half and again in the second half. “We were almost punished for lack of focus.” Tottenham’s fans were in full voice early on, believing in a repeat of the night 20 years ago when their team crushed Chel-

sea 5-1 in the League Cup semi-final second leg having lost the opener 2-1. There was to be no repeat though as Tuchel’s Chelsea are far more robust than Claudio Ranieri’s version and after settling into their rhythm the gulf in class acknowledged by Spurs manager Antonio Conte last week was evident again. They were too quick for Tottenham and Romelu Lukaku forced a fine save from Spurs keeper Pierluigi Gollini after

chesting down a long pass before Malang Sarr then had a shot blocked by a sliding Giovani Lo Celso. Chelsea did not have to wait long to take complete control. A corner was swung in by Mount and Gollini, surprisingly selected instead of Hugo Lloris, got nowhere near it, and the ball went into the back of the net off Rudiger. Tottenham barely got a kick for the next 20 minutes but did finish the half

strongly with Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg having a shot deflected wide before Tottenham thought they had been awarded a penalty as Rudiger chopped down Hojbjerg. Even that potential lifeline was snatched away though as referee Marriner was over-ruled by VAR, with the offence having taken place just outside the area. Incredibly Marriner awarded Tottenham another penalty in the 54th minute when Chelsea keeper Kepa Arrizabalaga came out to block Lucas Moura who had been played through by Kane. This time, after checking a pitchside monitor, he changed his mind as Arrizabalaga had clearly won the ball first before Moura tumbled over his leg. To their credit Tottenham showed more passion in the second half with Chelsea becoming a little sloppy and Arrizabalaga made a flying save to claw away Emerson Royal’s header. Tottenham realised the game was up though when Kane lashed home in the 63rd minute but once again VAR rescued Chelsea with the England striker adjudged marginally offside.

Valverde’s extra-time strike gives Real 3-2 victory over Barcelona R I YA D H , J A N 1 3 (AGENCIES): Federico Valverde finished off a stunning move in extra time to give Real Madrid a 3-2 victory over arch-rivals Barcelona in an exhilarating Spanish Super Cup semi-final on Wednesday. Real advanced to Sunday’s final against the winners of Thursday’s clash between holders Athletic Bilbao and LaLiga champions Atletico Madrid in the Saudi Arabian capital Riyadh. Vinicius Jr. opened the scoring for Real from a counter-attack early in the first half, but Luuk de Jong equalised shortly before halftime following a mistake by Real defender Eder Militao. Karim Benzema put Real back in front 25 minutes into the second half, striking home on the rebound from inside the area, but a header by substitute Ansu Fati, who was making his first appearance since November, took the game into extra time. Real claimed the winner from another counter-attack, with Rodrygo firing a low cross to the edge of the area. Vinicius dummied to shoot, which

eliminated the entire Barca defence and left Valverde all alone to tap the ball into an empty net. Real Madrid were huge favourites entering the match, but struggling Barcelona gave the LaLiga leaders a tough game. The King Fahd Stadium was supposed to be at 50% capacity due to COVID-19 concerns, but it looked almost full of excited fans thrilled to witness the first ‘Clasico’ played outside of Spain. “We were very effective in the counter-attack

and scored three spectacular goals,” Real coach Carlo Ancelotti told a news conference. Real Madrid sat back patiently and tried to set up counter-attacks for Vinicius and Benzema, but they allowed Barca to get too close to their area. Xavi Her nandez’s much improved team dominated the second half and extra-time, and Ousmane Dembele was a constant threat down the left for a Real defence missing David Alaba who was injured in the warm-up.

LO N D O N, JA N 1 3 (IANS): The English Premier League club Aston Villa confirmed the signing of France international Lucas Digne from Everton on Thursday. Julius Randle (17 points, 12 rebounds) and Mitchell Robinson (19 points, 10 rebounds) each had double-doubles for the Knicks, who have won four of five to improve to 21-21. for AFC Women’s Asian Cup

MUMBAI, JAN 13 (IANS): After camping in Kochi for more than a month since returning from their tour of Brazil, the Indian Women’s Team has now shifted base to Mumbai, where they are set to compete in the AFC Women’s Asian Cup India 2022. Looking forward to the tournament ahead, head coach Thomas Dennerby said that it’s time to implement all the things that we have been working on. “This is the moment we’ve been preparing for over the past six months. We’ve had over 200 sessions, a number of matches against quality opponents across four countries, and now it’s time to implement all the things that we have been working on,” said Dennerby. The 62-year-old Swede, who had also previously coached the Swedish and the Nigerian National Teams, revealed that a peptalk with the players before departure to Mumbai, has helped put everyone in the correct mindset. “We had a small meet with the players and we

explained to them how important the coming few weeks are in their lives. I think this has really struck a few chords, and you can now see the determination in their eyes,” he revealed. The Indian squad is a rather young one with as many as 15 players under the age of 25, with a collective average age of 23.13. The youngest members of the squad are four girls who have come in from the U-19 squad - Shilky Hemam, Priyangka Devi, Sumati Kumari, and Mariyammal Balamurugan. Winger Sumati believes that the togetherness and bonding between the players have grown over the last six months, with the more experienced bunch helping the younger ones in various aspects.

“I think we have all grown together as a squad. We had started with our camp in Jharkhand, and also played a number of matches abroad against some tough opponents, before moving base to Kerala. We’ve all been training with one goal in mind, and the entire squad is now focused on the job ahead,” said Sumati. “We have had a lot of help from the more experienced players, who have shown us the way in a lot of things, especially in various off-the-field aspects that could later help us,” she added. India begin their campaign at the DY Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai against IR Iran on January 20, before facing Chinese Taipei (January 23) at the same venue. K Y M C

IND v SA Test: SA need 111 runs to win

CAPE TOWN, JAN 13 (AGENCIES): Rishabh Pant scored a brilliant unbeaten 100 from 139 balls as India were bowled out for 198 in their second innings on the stroke of tea, to set hosts South Africa a victory target of 212 on day three of the decisive third and final test at Newlands. Pant took the attack to the home bowlers after lunch and smashed four sixes in an innings of high quality on a difficult wicket for batting. Captain Virat Kohli (29) was the only other player to score more than 10 in India’s second innings. With the series on the line, South Africa will have to chase their target on a pitch with prodigious seam movement and against a high-quality Indian pace attack. A fourth innings target of over 200 has been successfully chased only three times in 133 years at Newlands as India seek to claim a first ever series win in South Africa. But one of those was when South Africa chased 211 for the loss of five wickets against India in 2007 to win the test. Pant showed superb skill at first to weather a storm from the home

seamers, and then play an array of attacking strokes that showed his full repertoire of shots. He looked far more in control than any batsman in the test so far and could well have played India into a winning position. South Africa bowled without much luck, beating the bat with regularity, but it is the first time in test history that all 20 wickets to fall in a match for one team were caught.

Lungi Ngidi (3-21), Kagiso Rabada (3-53) and Marco Jansen (4-36) were among the wickets, Ngidi claiming the key scalp of Kohli to open up an end for South Africa to attack. Kohli chased a wide deliver y and was well caught at second slip by Aiden Markram, a mirror image of his two dismissals in the first test for which he received criticism. Djokovic in Australian Open draw but may still be kicked out M E L B O U R N E , JA N 13 (REUTERS) : Tennis world No.1 Novak Djokovic was included in the Australian Open draw as top seed on Thursday though uncertainty hung over his participation with the government considering whether to revoke his visa for a second time. Immigration Minister Alex Hawke could exercise discretionary power to cancel the visa over concern about the Serbian’s medical exemption from Australia’s COVID-19 inoculation rules. The unvaccinated defending champion, who practiced at the Rod Laver Arena on Thursday, drew unseeded fellow Serb Miomir Kecmanovic for his opening match, probably on Monday or Tuesday. The saga has intensified global debate over rights of choice for vaccines and become a tricky issue for Prime Minister Scott Morrison as he campaigns for re-election. Australia is due to hold an election by May, and while Morrison’s government has won support at home for its tough stance on border security,

it has not escaped criticism over the botched handling of Djokovic’s visa. Djokovic, 34, fuelled widespread anger in Australia when he announced he was heading to Melbourne with a medical exemption from requirements for visitors to be inoculated against COVID-19. On arrival, Australian Border Force decided his exemption was invalid and put him in an immigration detention hotel alongside asylum-seekers at for several days. A court on Monday allowed him to stay on grounds that officials had been “unreasonable” dur-

ing the seven-hour interview process in the middle of the night. The government must now decide whether to let Djokovic remain and bid for a record men’s 21st major title. Australia has endured some of the world’s longest lockdowns, has a 90% vaccination rate among adults, and has seen a runaway Omicron outbreak bring nearly a million cases in the last two weeks. Djokovic’s cause was not helped by a wrong entry declaration, where a box was ticked stating he had not travelled abroad in the two weeks before leaving for Australia.

Bumrah is world’s best bowler in all formats: Vaughan

NEW DELHI, JAN 13 (IANS): Former England cricket captain Michael Vaughan lavished praise on India’s fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah, saying the 28-yearold pacer is the best in the world at the moment across all formats. Vaughan’s remark came after Bumrah took 5/42, registering his seventh five-wicket haul in Test cricket at the place of his debut in 2018 as South Africa was bowled out for 210, giving India a narrow 13-run lead at the Newlands. “How good is @Jaspritbumrah93!!! I reckon across all formats he is the best in the World at the moment .. #SAvIND,” tweeted Vaughan. Before Vaughan, former South African pace bowler Eric Simons had given Bumrah’s bowling a huge thumbs up, saying he is one of the “sharpest I have come across”. Simons had said that not many people realise the “maturity” and “cricketing nuance” Bumrah brings to a game, adding that he has very clear thinking. “He is one of the sharpest bowlers I have come across. When we play against him in the IPL, I try and have a chat with him. I don’t think people realise the maturity and cricketing nuance of someone like Bumrah,” he said.

Murray beats Goffin to reach semis in Sydney

Hyderabad FC spoil Chennaiyin’s top-four hopes with a 1-1 draw

SYDNEY, JAN 13 (IANS): Britain’s Andy Murray reached the Sydney Tennis Classic semi-finals after his opponent David Goffin was forced to retire in the middle of their last-eight match, here on Thursday. Former World No 1 won the opening set 6-2 against the former world No 7 before Goffin pulled out of the match, just a game after receiving treatment to the back of his knee. It is the first time that Murray has reached a tourlevel semi-final since Antwerp in 2019. The Scot went on to win the title in Belgium three years ago, defeating former World No. 3 Stan Wawrinka in the final. The wild card will now play American Reilly Opelka in the semi-finals following the fourth seed’s 7-6(4), 6-2 victory over countryman Brandon Nakashima in a 83-minute clash. Meanwhile, top-seeded Russian Aslan Karatsev overcame Italy’s Lorenzo Sonego 6-2, 3-6, 6-2 to reach the semi-finals. The World No 20, who was voted 2021 Most Improved Player of the Year, triumphed after two hours and 49 minutes in a hard-fought encounter.

FAT O R DA , J A N 1 3 (AGENCIES): Chennaiyin FC’s aspirations of breaking into the top-four went up in smoke as they were held to a 1-1 draw by Hyderabad FC in a tense Indian Super League game that ended in a stalemate at the PJN Stadium in Fatorda on Thursday. C h e n n a i y i n we n t ahead through Mohd Sajid Dhot in the 13th minute but could not hold on to their slender lead till halftime as Javier Siverio (45th) continued his scoring spree with a goal on the cusp of halftime. As Debjit Majumder made a string of saves in Chennaiyin goal and the home side put pressure in six minutes of added time for the winner but in the end, it ended all square. Hyderabad missed talisman Bartholomew Ogbeche, lacking teeth upfront as the league’s topscorer served his suspension after picking up four yellow cards. The result means Hyderabad moved third in the table with 17 points from 11 games while Chennaiyin remained sixth having 15 points from 11 matches.

Chennaiyin nosed ahead early through an unlikely source when young defender Mohd Sajid Dhot headed in Anirudh Thapa’s inch-perfect free-kick leaving Laxmikant Kattimani with no chance. Stung by the early goal, Hyderabad got their act together and started bossing possession, also creating chances in the final third. The industry paid off just before halftime as Siverio atoned for his miss just a minute before with a calm and composed finish after Asish Rai sent in a delightful cross inside the box for Siviero to leap highest and head the ball in past Debjit Majumder.

Just after the restart, Debjit was forced into making two crucial saves to deny Siverio and Edu Garcia. Both teams made a flurry of chances to get that goal but clear-cut chances were few and far between before Ninthoinganba Meetel’s thunderbolt of a shot ricocheted off the bar and his rebound was a meek one. Chennaiyin upped the ante in the latter stages of the second half with the introduction of Rahim Ali injecting pace. But in the end, Hyderabad held firm to eke out a point. Inter beat Juve to claim 6th Supercoppa title

ROME, JAN 13 (IANS): Alexis Sanchez became the hero for Inter Milan, as his last-gasp winner in the extra time helped the Nerazzurri come from behind to beat Juventus 2-1 and claim their sixth Supercoppa title in history. The Supercoppa is a traditional clash between the previous season’s Serie A and Coppa Italia champions. Juve are the winner of the last edition, while Inter’s last victory in this competition came in 2010. With Matthijs de Ligt and Juan Cuadrado being suspended, Juve also had to play without an injured Federico Chiesa, and Mattia Perin got the nod to stand between the sticks as Wojciech Szczesny failed to get a green pass, while Inter was at relatively full strength. Inter had a more aggressive start but it was the Bianconeri that broke the deadlock in the 25th minute when Alvaro Morata floated a cross from the byline and Weston McKennie steered his header into the net undisturbed. The defending champion of Serie A got back on level terms 10 minutes later, as Lautaro Martinez turned up to convert the penalty after De Sciglio

kicked down Edin Dzeko in the box. The game was dragged into extra time after the two sides played out a goalless second half despite some genuine chances. In the extra time, Sanchez’s header following Hakan Calhanoglu’s corner went wide while Paulo Dybala blasted it over, reports Xinhua. As the game seemed

to be heading to a penalty shoot-out, Sanchez showed up to hog the limelight in the dying seconds, as Alex Sandro’s poor clearance went up into the air, which was tapped by Matteo Darmian for the Chilean to tap in before Daniele Rugani. “They didn’t make it particularly difficult for us. I’ve seen the stats and I think we deserved the win,

but we were up against a top side,” said Inter coach Simone Inzaghi. “I’ve got a good record against Juve in the Supercoppa and we’ve now won our first trophy of the season in front of our fans so I’m thrilled. We have to keep it up. We wanted this trophy because Inter hadn’t won it since 2010 and that’s too long,” he added.

India Open: Sindhu advances, Saina out, Srikanth tests Covid +ve 2022 edition of Indian Premier League could be held in South Africa, says report

NEW DELHI, JAN 13 (IANS): Two-time Olympic medallist PV Sindhu advanced while former winner Saina Nehwal crashed out of the India Open badminton championship that is reeling from withdrawals after seven players had to pull out after testing positive for Covid-19. With men’s singles top seed Kidambi Srikanth forced to pull out along with six other players after they returned a positive test in RT-PCR tests conducted on Tuesday, Sindhu kept the home hopes alive by reaching the quarter-finals with a comfortable straight games win against compatriot Ira Sharma in the second round on Thursday. There was more setback for India when women’s fourth seed Saina Nehwal was sent packing by compatriot Malvika Bansod in straight games. The Hyderabad shuttler, who won a silver medal in Rio de Janeiro Olympics in 2016 and followed it up by bagging a bronze in Tokyo Games in September 2021, broke away from 7-7 in the first game and surged to a 12-7 lead. She bagged five more consecutive points to take her score to 17 and went on to win the game 21-10. Sindhu opened a 10-1 lead in the second game, winning the match with ease to set up a last-eight

clash with compatriot Ashmita Chalha, who defeated Yaelle Hoyaux of France 21-17, 21-14 in the second round on Thursday. Ashmita had started her campaign in the India Open by upsetting fifth seed Evgeniyua Kosetskaya of Russia in the opening round. Saina, who is making a comeback to the circuit after missing out on a few events towards the end of the 2021 season, found Malavika a tough nut to crack on Thursday and lost 2117, 21-9 in a second-round encounter. The 31-year-old from

Haryana had progressed to the second round after her opponent Tereza Svabikova of the Czech Republic withdrew with an injury after losing the first game 22-20. But on Thursday, Saina could not make a good start as the 20-yearold Malvika maintained a stronghold on the match and did not give her senior opponent many chances. Malavika established an early lead and was leading 10-6 at the midway stage. Saina did win five consecutive points in the first game but could not catch Malvika. The second game was one-sided as Malvika opened up a lead from 2-2 onwards to make it 10-3. Though Saina reduced the margin to 7-9, Malvika could not be denied on Thursday as she widened the gap by winning five successive points and maintained her upper hand. Meanwhile, India suffered another setback in

men’s singles when sixth seed Sameer Verma had to withdraw from his match against Brian Yang of Singapore with a calf strain on Thursday. Earlier, the tournament plunged into chaos as seven players including men’s top seed Srikanth tested positive for Covid-19 and had to withdraw from the event. The others who tested positive for Covid-19 were doubles specialist Ashwini Ponappa, Ritika Rahul Thaker, Treesa Jolly, Mithun Manjunath, Simran Singhi, and Khushi Gupta. All have been asked to isolate themselves as per Covid-19 protocol. They will be allowed to leave New Delhi only after returning a negative RT-PCR test. The players had undergone the RT-PCR tests on Tuesday as per the testing protocol for the event and the Badminton World Federation (BWF) announced the results early on Thursday morning.

NEW DELHI, JAN 13 (IANS): South Africa could be in the fray to host the 2022 edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL), according to a newspaper report on Thursday. The report said that Sri Lanka could be a backup venue option if the third wave of the Covid-19 pandemic in India doesn’t end by early April. In 2021, the 14th edition of the IPL in India was suspended after May 4 due to the second wave of the Covid-19 pandemic breaching the bio-bubbles of various teams. The remainder of the tournament was then played in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), with Chennai Super Kings winning the final on October 15 in Dubai. “We can”t be dependent on UAE all the time so we decided to explore more options, South Africa’s time difference also works out well for the players,” a BCCI official was quoted as saying in The Indian Express.

With the addition of two new IPL teams in Lucknow and Ahmedabad, the 2022 edition of the IPL will be very long. If the move happens, it will be the second time South Africa would host the IPL after the 2009 edition was shifted there due to the general elections in India. What has helped build South Africa’s case is that they gave the Indian team, currently in the country for a three-match Test series followed by an ODI series of as many matches, good hotels and resorts where they are staying in a bio-secure

bubble environment. The Indian team stayed at the Irene Country Lodge for the first two Test matches and are currently living in The Taj Hotel in Cape Town. “The place where the team was staying for the second Test is spread over several acres. There were walking tracks and even a pond on the property and that has made things easier for the players who for the last couple of years or so have been confined to their rooms on several overseas tours,” further said an official. Incidentally, India’s tour to South Africa was under huge uncertainty due to the Omicron variant causing a surge in cases in the Rainbow Nation. Eventually, the tour dates were rescheduled and the T20I leg shifted to a later date. But with cases coming down in South Africa, it could be an ideal destination for IPL to take place if the third wave in India continues into April 2022.
