Gopalkrishna Gandhi possible ED questions Rahul for over 8 hrs prez candidate for Opposition on second day; Cong, BJP spar
NEW DELHI, JUN 14 (PTI): With the Opposition seeking to put up a united fight in the presidential poll, some leaders have reached out to former West Bengal governor Gopalkrishna Gandhi as a possible choice, sources said on Tuesday. Gandhi was the consensus opposition candidate for the post of vice president of India in 2017, but had lost to M Venkaiah Naidu. Sources said some opposition leaders talked to Gandhi over phone and urged him to consider their request for being the joint opposition candidate for the post of President. Sources added that some other names are also being considered and the opposition leaders have reached out to them also to seek their consent. Gandhi, who was governor of West Bengal from 2004-2009, has sought some time from these leaders and

will get back to them by Wednesday, sources said. Leaders who talked to him said his initial response to their request was “positive”. The sources said if he accepts the request, he could emerge as the consensus opposition candidate for the top post. The 77-year-old former bureaucrat has also served as High Commissioner to South Africa and Sri Lanka. He is the grandson of Mahatma Gandhi and C Rajagopalachari. Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee has convened a meeting of opposition parties to deliberate on the opposition choice of presidential nominee.
NEW DELHI, JUN 14 (PTI): Congress leader Rahul Gandhi was questioned for over eight hours by the Enforcement Directorate for the second consecutive day in the National Herald money-laundering probe and was again summoned on Wednesday, even as the opposition party continued its protests and sparred with the BJP, accusing it of conspiring to defame the Gandhi family through the ‘’false’’ case. Gandhi, 51, who was quizzed for over 10 hours a day earlier, arrived on Tuesday at the ED headquarters accompanied by his sister and Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and his questioning began at 11:30 a.m. After a session of about four hours, Gandhi took a break for about an hour. He rejoined the questioning and was still at the ED office at 9 p.m.
NEW DELHI, JUN 14 (PTI): India on Tuesday unveiled a “transformative” scheme called “Agnipath” for the recruitment of soldiers into the Army, the Navy and the Air Force largely on a short-term contractual basis with an aim to cut the ballooning salary and pension bills and enable a youthful profile of the armed forces. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh provided details of the new initiative at a media briefing shortly after the Prime Minister-led Cabinet Committee on Security approved the scheme which the government said would allow “patriotic and moti-

KOHIMA, JUN 14 (NPN): Even as its “pen-down strike” entered 10th day on Tuesday, the Nagaland Assembly Secretariat Staff Association (NASSA) has declared to intensify its protest against the reappointment of Dr. PJ Antony as the principal sec-
retary and arbitrary framing of certain provisions in the service rules. Earlier, NASSA had warned that if the demands were not met by June 13, it would prevent Antony from entering the NLA Secretariat complex. It had also served an ultimatum on the NLA speaker and chief secretary
Earlier in the day, Gandhi joined senior party leaders at a “dharna” at the Congress headquarters, where the chief ministers of Rajasthan and Chhattisgarh, Ashok Gehlot and Bhupesh Baghel, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and party MPs were also present. BJP hit out at the Congress, saying it is blocking roads to show its “leaders are above the law” and termed the protests “drama”. “When lawful action is tak-
ing place in a case of corruption, Congress is doing this drama and blocking roads.... it shows the party considers its leaders above law,” BJP’s national spokesperson Sambit Patra said. Union minister Anurag Thakur also took a swipe at Rahul Gandhi over his questioning by the ED after the Congress leader criticised prime minister’s decision to provide 10 lakh government jobs in the next 18 months. This scheme has been brought to strengthen the security of the country. It is a transformative scheme,” Singh said in presence of the three
service chiefs. He said the infusion of disciplined, motivated and skilled ‘Agniveers’ back into society after military service, would be a great asset for the nation as it will be a “win-win proposition”. to revoke the appointment of Dr Antony. However, since its demand went unheard, the Joint Action Committee (JAC) decided to intensify its stir by adding a poster campaign to ongoing protest. Addressing media persons at the NLA secretariat main gate, JAC secretary, Sezoto Theyo alleged that
Antony had arbitrarily revised certain service rules basing on which his application for reappointment was recommended and approved. He said even after repeated representations and ultimatums, none of their pleas were heard. Therefore, he said NASSA resolved to intensify the protest until Antony’s appointment was revoked. NASSA vice president, Rocus Rino said they had gathered at the main gate in order to stop Antony from entering the office premises. Responding to a query on how the amendments were made to the service rules, NASSA members
said although there were provisions to revise rules under provisions, it was also clearly mentioned that in order to frame or amend the guidelines, a committee had to set-up look into it. NASSA, which had challenged the amendment in the court, is waiting for the court to pass a judgement. NASSA members said that some of their senior members had fulfilled all the criteria for promotion and would be able to handle the office(s). Therefore, the members said they were demanding that the authority and the post be given to them and not be handled by a retired person.
defence ministry said the scheme comes into immediate effect and will govern the enrolment for the three services, implying that existing framework of employment for soldiers will cease to exist. It said the armed forces will recruit 46,000 ‘Agniveers’ this year and the eligible age for selection will be in the range of 17.5 years to 21 years. The recruitment under the scheme is set to kick within 90 days. The monthly salary of an ‘Agniveer’ in the first year of employment would be Rs 30,000 and the inhand amount would be Rs 21,000 as Rs 9,000 would
go to a corpus with an equal contribution of the government. S u b s e q u e n t ly, t h e monthly salary in the second, third and fourth year will be Rs 33,000, Rs 36,500 and Rs 40,000. Each ‘Agniveer’ will get an amount of Rs 11.71 lakh as ‘Seva Nidhi Package’ and it will be exempted from income tax. There will be no entitlement to gratuity and pensionary benefits and the new recruits will be provided non-contributory life insurance cover of Rs 48 lakh for the duration of their engagement period in the armed forces. Will not accept economic package based piecemeal solution: NSF DIMAPUR, JUN 14 (NPN): Naga Students’ Federation (NSF) has reiterated its earlier stand that the Nagas would “never accept an economic package based piecemeal solution”. In a representation to the Prime Minister, NSF president Kegwayhun Tep and general secretary Süpuni Ng Philo stated that earlier Agreements and Accords, which were “imposed and superimposed” to bring in “so-called ‘peaceful solutions’”, only created more problems and conflicts, rather than solving the problems.
The federation said that the Nagas were looking forward to inherit the “inclusive, honorable and acceptable solution” basing on the unique history and situation of the Naga people as assured by the government of India. However, NSF said that the policy of the government of India to “undo everything achieved through hard earned political negotiations has created great distrust in each one of our minds as we strive to uphold our God given identity.” (Cont’d on p-8)

Zeliang, who recently merged with the NDPP, has denied the report that some of them (21 MLAs) were planning to re-join NPF again. Imchen, issued a rejoinder as-- ‘former spokesperson of NPF Legislative Party (NPFLP)’- while reacting to a report which he termed as a rumour. Imchen said he also suspected that the report was the “handiwork of some individuals who never ceased to amaze with their (Cont’d on p-8) wild and fairy tale imagina-
tions”. He also declared that the chapter of merger in Nagaland was closed when 21 NPF MLAs merged with NDPP. It may be noted that the report in this newspaper had sourced the information to a senior NPF office bearer who had admitted that there were efforts in that direction as reported. Another senior NPF legislator admitted to this Correspondent Tuesday, that some former party MLAs were “not comfortable being in the new party” and were exploring options of returning to NPF. The MLAs were reportedly even ensuring that their bridges were not cut after leaving
NPF. One of the MLAs said they were not going to make any negative comments against their former party since they were unsure of their future in the new party. Another NPF legislator also mentioned some names among 21 who left and joined NDPP. In his rejoinder, Imchen concluded that the merger of 21 NPF with NDPP came after much deliberations on whether NDPP should merge with NPF or NPF with NDPP. Therefore, he said NDPP planning to merge with NPF again at this point of time was nothing more than a wild goose chase. (Cont’d on p-8) K Y M C

Correspondent/Staff Reporter DIMAPUR: Nagaland joined the world Tuesday in celebrating “World Blood Donor Day (WBDD)” under World Health Organization (WHO) 2022 slogan, “Donating blood is an act of solidarity. Join the effort and save lives”. WHO said 2022 slogan aims to draw attention to the roles that to the roles that voluntary blood donations play in saving lives and enhancing solidarity within communities. WBDD is celebrated every year by countries with an objective to raise awareness of the need for safe blood and blood products and to thank voluntary, unpaid blood donors for their life-saving gifts of blood, said WHO. ‘Blood Donor App’ launched in Kohima Kohima based Voluntary Blood Donors Association Kohima (VBDAK) organised a blood donation drive at Red Cross Society Building, here on Tuesday. During the drive, a mobile application was launched which would help in centralising information
on blood donors and create awareness on the importance of blood donation in the state. The application, “Blood Donor App”, developed by NK Square, was launched by NSDMA joint CEO, Johnny Ruangmei during the drive. In his speech, Johnny said the app would be useful in event of mass casualties or major accident(s). He expressed hope that since all information would now be centralised through the app, anyone would access the directory and obtain blood immediately after an accident. Ruangmei urged upon everyone to take it as their responsibility to save more lives with the help of latest technologies in whichever way possible. VBDAK chairman, Bendang Imsong disclosed that more than 40 units of blood were received during the drive from donors mostly comprising of jawans from the 78th CRPF battalion, Zubza and other civilians. Imsong observed that the specific objective of this year’s campaign was to thank blood donors across
the world and to create wider public awareness on the need for regular voluntary blood donors. VDBAK celebrated its 10th year of existence in 2021 and in this regard, the association resolved to make a long-lasting impact on how blood donation was being carried out in the state and make efforts to reach out to more people. Taking all these into account the app was developed, Imsong informed. Imsong observed that people were “still reluctant to come forward while the demand for blood donation was high”. H e, h oweve r, ex pressed hope that with the launch of the app, the awareness would increase. In a brief remark, Indian Red Cross SocietyNagaland branch, general secretary, Dr Neiphi Kire said despite all the developments and modern scientific advancement in medical science, artificial blood could not be prepared in laboratories, factories or institutions. It could only come from a human body and passed on through blood donations, he said.
Sharing some benefits of donating blood, Dr Kire said regular blood donation was linked to low blood pressure and lower the risk of heart attacks at the same time helps in reducing cardiovascular risks. gathering about the society and Hemophilia disorder. Stating that there was less or no awareness on Hemophilia disorder in Nagaland, Ezung said hemophilia is a rare disorder in which the ability of the blood to clot is severely reduced, causing the sufferer to bleed severely from even a slight injury. He said hemophilia are classified into two types: type A and type B and that it affects one out of every 20,000 males born worldwide, and both types A and B can be mild, moderate, or severe, depending on the number of clotting factors in the blood. Highlighting the challenges faced by People with Hemophilia (PWH) in Nagaland, apart from other challenges, Ezung said it was difficult for PWH or families of PWH to obtain a hemophilia diagnosis report as it takes more than a week for the report to arrive as the test was sent out of the state. He said so far, the society has identified ten PWH in Nagaland and added there might be many more people suffering, however, they were yet
to be identified registered with HSNC due to lack of awareness, medical support and care facilities. Ezung said the society was making every effort to reach out, identify and register all PWH in Nagaland by creating awareness through print and social media campaigns, leaflet distribution, and other means. He said the effort was to ensure that no PWH become disabled or die due to lack of “factor injection”, proper treatment and management. Ezung stated that in India alone has over 70,000 registered patients with Hemophilia A and B (1 person in 10,000 males as per National data survey). He said Hemophilia Federation of India (HFI) was established in 1983 by families of PWH and other members of the medical fraternity. 4 killed as heavy rains lash Guwahati
Flood in Guwahati railway station due to heavy downpour. GUWAHATI, JUN 14 (PTI): Four people were killed in a massive landslide in Guwahati amid heavy rains that flooded the city, officials said on Tuesday. A huge mass of land buried a house, in which there were four people, on a hillside in Nijarapar in Boragaon area, an official of the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) told PTI. “The landslide happened around 1 am mainly due to incessant rains. No other person is trapped as of now,” ASDMA District Project Officer (Kamrup Metropolitan) Kaustav Talukdar said.
With this, the total number of persons losing their lives in this year’s flood and landslides has gone up to 42. Talukdar said that landslides have been reported from another half a dozen places in the city, including Kamakhya, Kharghuli, Hengerabari, Silpukhuri and Chandmari Colony, but there were no casualties. Incessant rains since Monday night led to kneedeep water on all major roads across the city, while at some places water levels have crossed the waist. The approach road of the Guwahati railway station was also submerged.
Scores of vehicles, including school buses, were stuck on the roads as their engines failed in the flood waters, which have also entered hundreds of houses in the ‘smart’ city. Massive traffic jams were reported from many areas with vehicles stranded for several hours. Flooding was reported from Zoo Road, RG Baruah Road, GS Road, Nabin Nagar, Anil Nagar, Hatigaon, Ganeshguri, Hedayetpur, MLA quarters in Dispur, Lachit Nagar, Tarun Nagar, Jyotikuchi, Ghoramara, VIP Road, Rajgarh Road, Jorabat and Chatribari, among others.
Residents of Nabin Nagar left their homes at night and came to the footpaths of Rajgarh in the heart of the city. They alleged that no one from the administration has reached out to them and all of them, including the kids, are without drinking water. The Kamrup Metropolitan district administration has issued an advisory, asking people “not to venture out unless absolutely essential” in view of the incessant rains. “If your residence is prone to water logging/ landslides, please consider shifting to a safer location or please contact District Administration at 1077/ 86381 12297,” it tweeted. The Regional Meteorological Centre in Guwahati on Monday issued ‘Red Alert’ for Assam and Meghalaya and predicted up to “isolated extremely heavy rainfall” from Tuesday to Thursday. “...widespread/widespread rainfall accompanied with thunderstorm/ lightning/heavy to very heavy with extremely heavy rainfall at isolated places is very likely to continue over Northeastern states during 13-17 June 2022,” the weather office said.

Cong leaders detained for protest as ED grills Rahul Bajrang Dal to hold nationwide protest
(From p-1) “I would only say to Rahul ji, you should first provide the right answers to the ED on the serious charges of corr uption made against you,” the BJP leader told reporters. The Congress, however, accused the BJP of conspiring to defame the Gandhi family and the party by destroying their credibility through a “false” money laundering case being pursued by the Enforcement Directorate. Congress general secretary and chief spokesperson Randeep Surjewala claimed that the Centre is scared of Gandhi’s politics as he is raising issues concerning the public. “This entire exercise is illegal, unconstitutional, malicious and an exercise by a prime minister burning in the fire of political vendetta,” Surjewala told a press conference here. The Congress had alleged that its leaders were manhandled by police during Monday’s protest as they tried to walk to the ED office. All approach roads leading to the agency office were made out of bounds on Tuesday for the public as prohibitory orders were imposed and barricades put up. A large posse of police personnel including from the central anti-riot police force RAF and Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) were deployed.

The fight for truth shall go on,” he added. This is the second day of the Congress’s protests against the questioning of Rahul Gandhi by the ED in a money-laundering case related to the National Herald newspaper. The former Congress chief was questioned for over 10 hours on Monday. The Congress has said it will not be cowed down by intimidatory tactics of arrests or “false” cases against its top leaders.
against violence over Prophet remarks
NEW DELHI, JUN 14 (PTI): Bajrang Dal activists will hold a nationwide protest this week against the recent incidents of violence in parts of the country over remarks against Prophet Mohammad, the Vishva Hindu Parishad (VHP) announced on Tuesday. The RSS affiliate said its youth wing activists will hold a sit-in in district administration headquarters across the country on Thursday against the “growing extremist incidents by Islamic Jihadi fundamentalists”, and also submit a memorandum to President Ram Nath Kovind. Protests erupted in several parts of the country, including outside Delhi’s Jama Masjid, on June 10 against the controversial remarks on Prophet Mo-
hammad by now-sacked BJP functionaries Nupur Sharma and Naveen Jindal. In Jharkhand, some policemen were injured in a bid to control demonstrators, while authorities in Jammu imposed a curfew in a few areas. In parts of Uttar Pradesh, protesters pelted stones at the police, prompting the force to baton-charge them and use tear gas shells. “Against the growing extremist incidents by Islamic Jihadi fundamentalists in the country, the VHP’s youth wing Bajrang Dal will now take to the streets,” the saffron outfit’s Secretary General Milind Parande said in a statement. “Bajrang Dal activists will hold a sit-in across all district headquarters on Thursday against continuous attack on Hindus by the
Jihadi fundamentalists and submit a memorandum to the President,” he added. Parande demanded that a strict vigil be kept at the mosques from where the mobs allegedly came out after Friday prayers and carried out violence in parts of the country on June 10. “Those who instigated the mob should be arrested immediately and strict action be taken against them,” Parande demanded, adding, “Security of those being threatened be ensured. Those threatening be arrested and criminal cases be filed against them.” He demanded that authorities should also tighten the noose around Muslim outfits “like Jamiat Ulamai-Hind, mosques and people of jihadi mindset who are source of food and inspiration for such rioters”.

the ED summonses to Rahul Gandhi and Congress chief Sonia Gandhi and their questioning in the case, which he claimed has nothing in it and is part of “vendetta”. The veteran Congress leader said Prime Minister Narendra Modi should instead focus on governance and not target opposition leaders. Baghel described the ED action as a result of “political bias” and “malicious”. It is nothing but “political vendetta” and the case has no grounds for investigation, the Chhattisgarh chief minister said. “The BJP government at the Centre should say whether any action has been taken against a leader of any pro-BJP party in the last eight years. The moment someone joins the BJP, all the cases against him get hushed up. The ED,

Pliable probe agencies
A
case that has been hanging fire against the Gandhis- Sonia and Rahul- since 2012 when Subramaniam Swamy the maverick politician and close friend of late Rajiv Gandhi petitioned the court to order a probe on alleged fraud in acquisition of National Herald newspaper by Young India Ltd. The National Herald case involves loan given by the Congress to the party’s newspaper-National Herald- launched by Jawaharlal Nehru (in 1938). The newspaper ran aground due to debts totalling Rs.90 crore. In order to revive the NH newspaper, Young India Ltd (YIL) was set up in November 2010, in which Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi held a majority share of 76%. Motilal Vora held 24% and Oscar Fernandez held 12% of the shares in the company. The Congress who had originally lent money to AJL, assigned the debt to Young India Ltd which meant that AJL had to pay back Rs 90 crore to YIL. Since AJL was not in a position to repay the loans, the company transferred its shareholding to Gandhi-owned YIL for which they received Rs 50 lakh. Maverick politician Subramaniam Swami in his petition, accused the Gandhis with taking over a publicly-held company by merely paying Rs 50 lakh considering the company had real estate properties worth Rs 2000 crore. The timing of the summons on Sonia and Rahul is suspect as it comes at a time when the Modi government has taken a huge risk by drastically reducing recruitment of armed forces on the plea of saving on pensions. Sonia is undergoing treatment for her second Covid infection and issued with fresh summons. Rahul was grilled for nearly ten hours on Monday and again on Tuesday and will continue to be grilled on June 15. There are several ways with which the NH case can be viewed but what comes out is the conduct of central probe agencies notably the CBI, Narcotics Control Bureau(NCB), NIA, ECI and Enforcement Directorate (ED) in the recent years. There is no second opinion, that if the Gandhis are found guilty they should face the consequences. Many political parties have slammed the abuse of central probe teams by the Modi government during the past several years. It is also undeniable that the central probe agencies only work when it involves non-BJP opposition and incapable to exercise probe powers against offenders if they belong to BJP. Current chief justice of the Supreme Court of India N.V.Ramana had expressed the need for India to have an independent umbrella institution with an oversight over agencies such as the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), the Enforcement Directorate (ED) and the Serious Fraud Investigation Office (SFIO), as the image of the institutions has been tarnished by allegations of corruption, excesses, lack of impartiality, and a close nexus with the political class. In a telling remark, Justice Ramana asserted that investigative agencies should not allow authoritarian tendencies to creep in the democratic Indian society and officers must remember that their allegiance “must be to the constitution and the rule of law, and not to any person.” The CJI’s remark is a brutal truth about how these agencies are being abused and used for witch hunt. However, it is also hoped the Supreme Court will intervene in the matter to save the sanctity of the law.

Abide in Me… —John 15:4
In the matter of determination. The Spirit of Jesus is put into me by way of the atonement by the Cross of Christ. I then have to build my thinking patiently to bring it into perfect harmony with my Lord. God will not make me think like Jesus— I have to do it myself. I have to bring “every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ” (2 Corinthians 10:5). “Abide in Me”— in intellectual matters, in money matters, in every one of the matters that make human life what it is. Our lives are not made up of only one neatly confined area. Am I preventing God from doing things in my circumstances by saying that it will only serve to hinder my fellowship with Him? How irrelevant and disrespectful that is! It does not matter what my circumstances are. I can be as much assured of abiding in Jesus in any one of them as I am in any prayer meeting. It is unnecessary to change and arrange my circumstances myself. Our Lord’s inner abiding was pure and unblemished. He was at home with God wherever His body was. He never chose His own circumstances, but was meek, submitting to His Father’s plans and directions for Him. Just think of how amazingly relaxed our Lord’s life was! But we tend to keep God at a fever pitch in our lives. We have none of the serenity of the life which is “hidden with Christ in God” (Colossians 3:3). Think of the things that take you out of the position of abiding in Christ. You say, “Yes, Lord, just a minute— I still have this to do. Yes, I will abide as soon as this is finished, or as soon as this week is over. It will be all right, Lord. I will abide then.” Get moving— begin to abide now. In the initial stages it will be a continual effort to abide, but as you continue, it will become so much a part of your life that you will abide in Him without any conscious effort. Make the determination to abide in Jesus wherever you are now or wherever you may be placed in the future.

NAGALAND POST, DIMAPUR WEDNESDAY, JUNE 15, 2022
The most important lesson in life is to have values
S
ixty years ago, an American newspaper columnist wrote about how, as a child, he was terrified by thunder and lightning and would hide, trembling, in his bedroom wardrobe. But his mother would come for him and lead him by the hand down to the front porch, where the display of heavenly violence could be seen in full force. He wrote his masterpiece on the day his mother died. He captioned it “She Taught Me to Love the Storm.” There she described the glory of a firmament that could produce these things, and spoke of what a privilege it was for puny man to have his life enriched by this power, even if there was danger in it. Gradually the boy learned to love the storm. And all the things that make storms in life---controversy, reverses, criticism---no longer terrified him. In this thermonuclear age when man-made lightning dwarfs the thunderbolts of nature, what greater gift can a parent leave to his child than the gift of courage? And to teach your child to live with lightning. A modern child today has no assurances of any safe places, bombs or no bombs, yet he/she has, compared to previous decades, a much better chance of a longer lifespan. It is a time for vigorous and enthusiastic youth (not for sissies and whiners) for they will inherit and define the near future. Role of Parents A parent these days needs to give the child a balanced diet of security and struggles. The child must have love but not the surfeiting love that smothers self-reliance. The child must feel the whip and goad of struggle, but not to the point where he/she is shattered by insecurity. A good allowance, perhaps electronic gadgets like TV, PCs, Smartphone, motorbike/scooter even a Jeep or a car or SUV and the ever handy and simple mobile phone etc but more important is imbibing in the child a sense of values
like for example, the joy of earning, the great growingup lift of a reward for a job well done. This may include helping the family to resolve a problem, the understanding of work that would make him/her respect the fruits of the works of others. And of course, the inexpressible happiness that comes to a boy/girl who finds he/ she is being treated like a man/woman. Too many parents are quick to back off when kids object or complain. They bail them out of tough spots and make excuses or give in when the going gets tough. Kids are long term investments, and parents have to stop making short terms decisions about them. Children must be encouraged in the pursuit of knowledge and understanding and creativity above examination results and material success. A century ago, the first issue of Reader’s Digest, February 1922 featured in its lead article, American inventor of the telephone Alexander Graham Bell (1847-1920) and his belief that self-education is a lifelong affair: “The very first essential of any education is to observe. Observe! Remember! Compare! It is the foundation of all education.” For this, parents need to spend quality time with children at interesting places, use positive reinforcement to build self-esteem and foster love and togetherness. As novelist Phillip Pullman emphasized: “Children need art and stories and poems and music as much as they need food and fresh air and play.” It is also a fact that youth in general whether school-going or not, are keen to learn more about their customs, traditions, even the laws of nature like day and night, sunlight, rain, lightning, thunderstorms, floods, time for planting and harvesting, what kind of birds fly where and why and when and how. The seedling stage is the most important phase of a plant’s lifespan. Its process of growth takes
time and cannot be rushed. Then gradually one can see the tip of the plant peeping out and then after a while it sprouts. All the while, the gardener has to ensure it receives adequate water nourishment and plucking of weeds and pests that may hamper its growth and then weeks later it blooms. In similar way a child is nourished in its growth. So, “Discipline your children while they are young enough to learn. If you don’t you are helping them to destroy themselves.” (Proverbs 19:18). For character-building is the basis of every society. When it comes to the essential basics, Guy Wright wrote in the San Francisco Examiner: “If you are a happy parent, you give your son or daughter an invaluable legacy. It doesn’t matter very much whether you’re rich or poor---although, let’s not delude ourselves, rich is better. But if the choice is between happy-poor and unhappy rich, the children of a laughing pauper are the ones to envy. They will grow up with the expectation that life is good, that the world is a sunny and friendly place, that other people are as human and decent as they are, that it’s fun to be alive. And with that attitude, they can accomplish almost anything.” As Dutch painter (1853-1890) Vincent van Gogh (pronounced Gok) used to motivate, “What would life be if we had no courage to attempt anything?” And “Every great and commanding movement in the annals of the world is the triumph of enthusiasm.” --- Ralph Waldo Emerson (18031862), American poet, essayist and dramatist. Meeting trouble when it comes In his anthology “Courage And Confidence,” Norman Vincent Peale writes: “It is inadvisable to go out, as they say, looking for trouble. For when you make it a point of looking for trouble, you
are pretty likely to find it. It will flow to you if it finds you hospitable to it. “Trouble does come and sometimes it seems to come all at once and lots of it. So much and so true is that basic necessity of every human being is assuredly to know how to meet trouble if and when it comes. “Since much trouble in life is self-manufactured, caused not by conditions or by other people but by ourselves, it is wise to condition the mind to the non-production of trouble. Some people have more trouble than others simply because they do not shoot away from trouble. They think in terms of trouble, or they are careless, or their acts are not designed wisely, and they draw trouble to themselves. “Others think positively and conduct themselves around with fortuitous circumstances in such a manner that they hedge themselves and literally beat back trouble. But there is no assurance that trouble will not enter into the life of every man. He must then have resources built into him over long days when things were fortuitous, when favorable winds and smooth seas were kind to the craft of his life. “He who does not prepare for storms when no storms are indicated is lacking in the plain preparatory wisdom required by any rational person. The fact is that storms and troubles will come. They may be delayed, even long delayed, but ultimately they will come. So, therefore one must buttress oneself inwardly, prepare oneself in the spirit, condition oneself in the mind, so that when trouble finally comes he or she will have the equipment and the resources with which to handle it constructively.” Seven years ago in April 2015, Indian badminton player Saina Nehwal stated in YourStory.com, “Setbacks are part of life, you cannot wish them away. I think you have to deal with them so that you
The tyranny of the bulldozer
W
riting in ‘The Liberty of Man, Woman and Child’, Robert Ingersoll, the 19th century American lawyer and satirist, identified two kinds of tyrants through the ages– the king and the priest. “All the altars and all the thrones have united to arrest the forward march of the human race.” Two centuries later, in India, the altar and the throne have come together in one persona – that of Yogi Adityanath, the chief minister of Uttar Pradesh, who, as Ingersoll said, has made sport and prey of human beings, his tyranny feeding upon the liberties of the people. How else would one describe this use by ‘Maharaj-ji’ – his sobriquet -of bulldozers to raze the homes of so-called criminals in a democratic country where rule of law should prevail supreme? By elected leaders as well as the people in general. He has let loose a virtual reign of terror ungoverned by the diktats of democracy, the Constitution or the courts. And while this might seem as an ideal solution to contain crime in the eyes of the king and the priest, in the hands of people like Yogi Adityanath it might be safe to presume the bulldozer will be used only to terrorise political rivals or destroy those the regime does not like, particularly the Muslim minorities.
For so far, even presuming the bulldozer is a deterrent, we have not seen its use against those criminals who aid and abet this tyrannical regime. This new tendency has the potential of giving birth to a whole new genre of criminals who will be closely connected with the ruling party and rogue policemen who will use the bulldozer indiscriminately to settle their own scores. The common man will be a mere slave to their whims and subject to every injustice and brutality of those who wield such absolute power. The bulldozer is not just razing homes of criminals, it is also crushing democracy and pulping the hopes of all law-abiding citizens in this country. The return of Adityanath to Uttar Pradesh despite his multiple violations of democratic norms and running one of the cruellest regimes in the country, has now encouraged others to resort to such tyrannical measures to cover up their own failures in governance. Madhya Pradesh chief minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan recently unleashed bulldozers on those who had hurled stones at a Ramnavmi procession and in the process brought down even homes built under Narendra Modi’s own Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana.
Who is to say that other BJP chief ministers will not be encouraged by these examples and use their own bulldozers to crush political rivals in their states? Given that the BJP is ruling a majority of states in the country today the prospect is as monstrous and fearsome as it is alarming and disquieting for an India as we have always known it – we always had an honourable leadership, generous to a fault and respecting not just the masses but all the institutions and laws that made the nation, as Aristotle would say it, a generally happy place for all people. But the very same Aristotle had warned that democracies had the potential to degenerate into despotism and that is what seems to be happening in India today. The unwise choice of some people in one state has endangered the security of the whole nation and we must fight this tyranny of the despots with everything at our disposal, more particularly the creation of awareness among the people --that if the bulldozers have come for their neighbours today, they may well come for them tomorrow We cannot allow such tyranny of the democraticallyelected despots to destroy our basic freedoms and liberties. (As published in National Herald)
can come back stronger.” The Holy Bible says God does not keep His child immune from trouble, no matter how real or intense the adversities may be….“I will be with him in trouble.” (Psalm 91:15). Resilience of the human spirit In “Psychology Today” (Feb. 1972) by E.L. Quarantelli and Russell Dynes write: “Catastrophes has always been a basic ingredient of human dramas ranging from Old Testament epics to newspaper stories and secondrate films. Our strongest impressions of how people behave in the face of fire and flood come from such accounts……In the face of catastrophes, does man instinctively turn tail or stand his ground? Research reveals the reassuring truth……The reality of events suggests that human beings are amazingly controlled and resilient in the face of adversity. Perhaps heroism---not panic or shock---is the right word to describe their most common behaviour in time of disaster.” An article headlined “A Feeling For Priorities” in Newsweek magazine of May 08, 1995, by American pilot Arnold Benson who flew a B-26 Martin Marauder before the final spring of the Second World War described how after his first bomb run over a target in Germany, he started to shake and gave the controls to his co-pilot. He was 21 years old while his four other flight mates were even younger. “A few minutes later,” he wrote, “I was all right and took back the controls. Completing that mission taught me that, no matter how scared I am, I can handle anything while the crisis is right there, breathing on me. Afterwards I may blow sky-high---but that’s afterwards---and I learned one lesson: don’t panic.” He adds, “A feeling for priorities, a sense of what not to choke about. It gave the rationale of all agony; if you can live through this minute---or hour or day
or week---maybe the next hour will be better. Sometimes, one develops an antenna to find funny aspects in the grim. That’s essential for survival----awareness of the ludicrous gives your boat buoyancy in any of life’s stormy crossings. I developed an undying appreciation for that everyday ongoing miracle, the resilience of the human spirit.” Hope and courage “A community is not unlike an individual. Before it fully ripens and matures, it must drink deeply of the wine of life. It has to taste sorrow as well as joy, failure no less than success, and disappointment equally with rewards. It has to experience struggle and storm if it is fully to appreciate quiet and calm” --- Angus MacDonald, former Prime Minister of Nova Scotia. Hope and courage banish fear. Almost from the beginning of recorded history, mankind has recognized that the surest antidote for fear is religious faith. Belief---and trust---in a personal God makes a man/woman bigger than himself/herself and stronger than himself/herself. The life and times of many eminent men and women the world over are testimony to this. Whether our storms come as substantial obstacles in our lives, as emotional turmoil, or as mental stress, God will still our storms “to a whisper” and guide us to a place of worship (Psalm 107: 2930). But if you are weak in a crisis, you are weak indeed. Therefore, in the hour of adversity be not without hope for crystal rains fall from black clouds. When the storm ends you might even see a rainbow which is a symbol, a sign of peace after the storm. The mountain cedar is born in wind and sleet, and lives a long, long time, thanks to its tough core and clinging roots. Durable are the children who have been taught to love the storm. Happy are the parents of the young mountain cedars. Jack T. Chakhesang

Plight of an aggrieved pensioner
Sir,
Through this column I would like to bring to your notice about certain clarifications in regard to final payment of pension. That through an order dated 2nd June 2022 from the respected office of the Principal Accountant General (A&E), Indian Audit and Accounts Dept. I have been informed of procuring an HBA (loan) of Rs 20,000. But as per my knowledge, I have not acquired any kind of loans, be it service/ personal for that matter. Upon enquiry, it has come to my knowledge that the same issue is also faced by individuals especially from the Police dept. If I had acquired the same, it would reflect in the various accounts branch namely; accounts branch (7th NAP Bhandari), treasury department Dimapur, SBI Dimapur (main branch), personal bank account details and Housing department office, Kohima. For this matter, I personally request the concerned department to investigate for any of my signatures/initials for acquiring the HBA in my name. If no valid documents or details can be established regarding this, then it is probable that there were clerical mistakes from certain sections in the housing department. This is not a minor mistake since it concerns a whole lot numbering in hundreds. These kinds of clerical mistakes not only damage the credibility of the concerned department but also the individual’s faith in the department. I would like to make myself clear that if any contradicting evidence surfaces, I am personally willing to deduct an amount of Rs 2 lakh instead of the mentioned amount of Rs 20k. I would also like to mention that there are many families facing this same issue, and some of us have been waiting for our pensions since March 2020. It’s an endless struggle to meet our basic needs with no other source of income. From pending education fees of children to putting a halt on medical bills, it is really a disheartening state. Therefore, on grounds that Nagaland being a Christian state, it is my fervent appeal to the concerned department and fellow Nagas for that matter to kindly not repeat these kinds of errors in future so that people don’t have to suffer the same issue we are going through at present. Rtd. SI. OPL (NPTO) Rakhomo Lotha, (Rtd. from 7th NAP. Bn. Bhandari)

PM Modi directs recruitment of 10 lakh people in next 1.5 years: PMO
Narendra Modi by the end of 18 months from now. “PM Narendra Modi reviewed the status of Human Resources in all departments and ministries and instructed that recruitment of 10 lakh people be done by the Government in mission mode in next 1.5 years,” the PMO said in a tweet. According to the latest annual report of the Department of Expenditure on Pay and Allowances, the total number of regular central government civilian employees in position (including in the Union territories) as on March 1, 2020 was 31.91 lakh as against the sanctioned strength of 40.78 lakh and approximately 21.75 per cent of the posts were vacant. The report said almost
92 per cent of the total manpower is covered by five major ministries or departments -- railways, defence (civil), home affairs, posts and revenue. Of the total strength of 31.33 lakh (excluding the Union territories), the percentage share of the railways is 40.55, home affairs 30.5, defence (civil) 12.31, posts 5.66, revenue 3.26 and all other ministries and departments 7.72. The total expenditure on pay and allowances (excluding productivity-linked bonus or ad-hoc bonus, honorarium, encashment of earned leave and travelling allowance) for the regular central government civilian employees, including the
employees of the Union territories and missions, was Rs 2,25,744.7 crore in 2019-20 as compared to Rs 2,08,960.17 crore in 2018-19. According to the report, against the sanctioned strength of 10.16 lakh in central police forces, 9.05 lakh employees were in position as on March 1, 2020. Government sources said various departments and ministries were asked to prepare the details of vacancies following Modi’s direction to this effect and the decision to recruit 10 lakh people was taken following an overall review. During various Assembly polls, opposition parties have tried to corner the BJP over the issue of unemployment, but the saffron party has been successful in neutralising the criticism with its planks of welfarism, development and Hindutva. It has also consistently refuted the opposition’s charge on unemployment, arguing that its various programmes have led to a rise in entrepreneurship and overall employment generation.
Process for appointment of CDS underway: Rajnath NEW DELHI, JUN 14 (PTI): Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Tuesday said the appointment of the new Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) will be made soon and that the process for it is underway. The post of CDS has been lying vacant since General Bipin Rawat’s death in a helicopter crash on December 8 last year. “The appointment of the CDS will be made soon. The process for it is underway,” the defence minister said during a media briefing here on the rollout of the “Agnipath” recruitment scheme for the armed forces. Earlier this month, the government issued notifications, widening the selection pool for the top position. According to the new rules, any serving or retired lieutenant general, air marshal and vice-admiral under the age of 62 years will be eligible for appointment to the post of CDS. The three-star officers are now eligible to become the CDS, along with the serving chiefs of the three services, according to the changes made to the Army, Air Force and Navy Acts.
Agnipath scheme for armed forces evokes mixed response from veterans
NEW DELHI, JUN 14 (PTI): Armed forces veterans have expressed mixed reaction to the Agnipath scheme under which soldiers will be recruited in the Army, the Navy and the Air Force, largely on a short-term contractual basis, with an aim to cut the ballooning salary and pensions bill. “The disastrous performance of the largely conscript Russian army in the Ukraine war reveals the pitfalls in having a partially or inadequately trained force fighting a determined enemy,” said Brig Rahul Bhonsle (retired) of the Security Risks consultancy in New Delhi. Besides Russia, he cautioned, can choose which wars it wants to fight and how it wants to fight them, but India cannot. It needs a ‘dedicated’ and well-trained army to deal with palpable threats from Pakistan and China in inhospitable terrain. Lieutenant General (retired) Vinod Bhatia said the Agnipath scheme -also called the Tour of Duty scheme -- will sound the death knell for the armed forces. “ToD (Tour of Duty)
not tested, no pilot project, straight implementation. Will also lead to militarization of society, nearly 40,000 (75%) youth yearon-year back rejected and dejected without a job, semi trained in arms exAgniveers. Not a good idea. No one gains,” Bhatia wrote on Twitter. The soldiers employed under the Agnipath scheme will be called Agniveers. The government said the Agniveers will serve in the armed forces for four years initially and 75 per cent of them will be retired at the end of the time period. Group Captain (retired) Nitin Welde, who served in the Indian Air Force (IAF) for 22 years, said it is too early to criticise or appreciate the scheme. Major General (retired) B S Dhanoa said while the scheme has been conceived and implemented with cost cutting in mind, it may turn out to be a catalyst to larger reforms needed in a 21st-century military. “If our top brass and political leaders are capable of looking beyond
short term gains, we may still achieve a lot,” he wrote on Twitter. Major General (retired) Yash Mor criticised the Agnipath scheme, stating that more than anything else, he feels for the lakhs of youngsters who had lost all hope of recruitment in the last two years. “Service headquarters too appear to be reluctant to implement this,” Mor said in a tweet. Major General (retired) Satbir Singh said the Agnipath scheme for the armed forces is not in keeping with the erstwhile military tradition, ethos, morals and values. “It will adversely effect efficiency and effectiveness of military,” he added. In his blog, Lieutenant General (retired) P R Shankar said, “Many senior veterans have written with the wisdom of their experience. A common voice has emerged. The tour of duty does not seem to be a good idea. Proceed with caution.” Shankar said the Tour of Duty proposal expects a superman from a kindergarten student.

NEW DELHI, JUN 14 (PTI): Prime Minister Narendra Modi has asked various government departments and ministries to undertake the recruitment of 10 lakh people on a “mission mode” in the next year and a half, his office said on Tuesday. The direction from Modi came following a review of the status of human resources in all government departments and ministries, the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) said. The government’s decision comes amid the opposition’s frequent criticism of it on the issue of unemployment. A large number of vacant posts in different government sectors has often been flagged. The decision to fill up 10 lakh posts in the next 18 months means that the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) will have something solid to counter the opposition’s criticism of its government on the issue of unemployment in the 2024 Lok Sabha polls. The country will be gearing up for the next general election, expected to be held in April-May in 2024,

It said the applications will be considered in a centralised manner based on objective criteria including performance during their four-year engagement period and up to 25 of each specific batch of ‘Agniveers’ will be enrolled in regular cadres of the armed forces. It said the selection will be the exclusive jurisdiction of the armed forces. Currently, the Army recruits young people under the short service commission for an initial tenure of 10 years which is extendable up to 14 years. The scheme is aimed at slashing the salary and pension bills of the three services which have been increasing rapidly. (From p-1) He said the merger of 21 NPF (out of 25) with NDPP on April 29, took place with foreknowledge of legal and political consequences after which the strength of NDPP has shot up to 42. Imchen claimed that the erstwhile NPF legislators in the true spirit of Naga regionalism were seriously pondering how the State’s regional forces could be brought together to facilitate the ongoing Naga peace process. He claimed that after the merger, there was no further discussion of plans for merger of NDPP with NPF as reported. Alleging that certain individuals with vested interests were at play to bring about discord and confusion among the 42 NDPP MLAs, he said that this would not yield their desired result as the question of merging with did not arise.

ever, added that the recruitment of women under the scheme will depend on the needs of the respective services. Air Chief Marshal V R Chaudhari said the IAF is looking to tap into the source of dynamic young people and it will train and expose them to the high-tech environment and hone their skills for future employment. “The new scheme therefore gives the IAF an opportunity to draw from the vast pool of talent available in the country,” he said. In a statement, the defence ministry said the scheme will enhance the youthful profile of the Armed Forces and provide a fresh lease of ‘Josh’ and ‘Jazba’ whilst at the same time bringing about a transformational shift towards a more tech savvy armed forces which it said is the need of the hour. It said the Agniveers would form a distinct rank in the armed forces, different from any other existing ranks. (From p-1) Upon the completion of four years of service, based on organisational requirement and policies promulgated by the armed forces from time-to-time, ‘Agniveers’ will be offered an opportunity to apply for permanent enrolment in the armed forces. “The new process will herald a paradigm shift in our recruitment process and will necessitate changes in the way we impart training to our recruits and soldiers, in enhancing their combat potential,” Army Chief Gen Manoj Pande said at the joint press briefing. He said there will be “no compromise” on physical, medical and professional standards and parameters that were in place for recruitment of soldiers in the Army. “I want to assure you that during the implementation and stabilisation of the Agnipath scheme, the Army’s operational capabilities and preparedness along the borders and the ability to deal with internal security challenges will be fully maintained,” he said. sertion of ours,” NSF said. NSF stated that the younger generation of the Nagas trust in the Prime Minister’s statesmanship to ensure that lasting peace and justice was brought about in Naga homeland through his “strong political will of solving the protracted Indo-Naga political issue.” NSF said Nagas also have the highest faith in him and hold on to his declaration to the international communities that the South-East Asia’s longest running conflict was brought to its logical conclusion. The federation has, therefore, appealed to the Prime Minister to translate the declaration into reality. Claiming that various agencies of the government of India were playing “divisive role”, the NSF has appealed to the Prime Minister to “stop such elements from deepening the crisis which will only lead to a fall-out in the ongoing peace process”. NSF urged the Prime Minister to take direct control of the situation in letter and in spirit.

The revised rates of interest shall be made applicable to fresh deposits and renewals of maturing deposits,” SBI said. The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) had last week hiked the repo rate by 0.50 per cent to 4.90 per cent. Repo is the short term lending rate RBI charges to the banks. SBI has also revised by up to 0.20 per cent the marginal cost of fund based lending rates (MCLR) with effect from June 15, 2022.
(From p-1) Further, the federation expressed apprehension that the “worst will happen” if the government of India failed to honour its commitment and exhibit its utmost sincerity by ensuring that the rights and dignity of the Naga People were upheld. NSF cautioned that the lack of commitment to “solve the problem in hand” would definitely prove counterproductive. The federation has, therefore, reiterated its earlier stand that the Naga youth and students would “never accept an economic package based piecemeal solution”. NSF said Naga youth and students were “convinced that it is just another burnt cake with some fancy yet superficial icing on it.” It stated that “such exercise will only eventually deepen the protracted Indo-Naga problem” rather than being the solution that the Naga people had long desired. “The failed agreements and accords of the past bear testimony to this as-

Congo military accuses Rwanda of invasion
File photo of M23 rebels
GOMA, JUN 14 (AP): Congo’s military accused Rwanda of “no less than an invasion” after M23 rebels captured a key town on Monday. The military vowed that Congolese forces would defend their homeland, marking a dramatic escalation in tensions between the two Central African neighbors. The statement from Gen Sylvain Ekenge, spokesman for the military governor of North Kivu province, came hours after the town of Bunagana fell into the hands of the M23. “The Rwandan defense forces have this time decided to violate ... our territorial integrity by occupying the border town of Bunagana,” the military said in a statement, adding that it constituted “no less than invasion of the Democratic Republic of Congo.” There was no immediate reaction from the gov-
ernment of Rwanda, but the government there has strongly denied accusations over the years that is supports the Congolese rebel group. Many of the M23 fighters are Congolese ethnic Tutsis and Rwanda’s president is of Rwandan Tutsi descent. In a statement Monday, a spokesman for the rebel group called on Congolese President Felix Tshisekedi to open direct negotiations with them and said they seized the town only to make it safe enough for civilians to return after they fled recent violence. “In the event of a new threat against our positions or the civilian population, our movement’s troops have received the order to follow and annihilate the threat no matter where it comes from,” M23 spokesman Willy Ngoma said in the statement.

Complete information about the number of bodies in mass graves or elsewhere isn’t known, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy told the American Jewish Committee on Sunday. He cited the killings of two children who died with their parents in the basement of an apartment building in Mariupol in a Russian bombing. Zelenskyy, who is Jewish and lost relatives in the Holocaust, asked: “Why is this happening in 2022? This is not the 1940s. How could mass killings, torture, burned cities, and filtration camps set up by the Russian military in the occupied territories resembling Nazi concentration camps come true?”
LAHORE, JUN 14 (PTI): Pakistan’s ex-military dictator General Pervez Musharraf, who is in a UAE hospital in a critical condition with no possibility of recovery, may be brought back to the country in an air ambulance as the Army stands by its former chief, a media report said on Tuesday. Gen. Musharraf, 78, who ruled Pakistan from 1999 to 2008, was charged with high treason and given a death sentence in 2019 for suspending the Constitution. His death sentence was later suspended. The powerful military establishment has offered the family of the former president that it can facilitate the return of Gen. Musharraf if it wishes, Dunya TV reported. “The military contacted the family of Gen. Musharraf and offered

A member of an extraction crew works during an exhumation at a mass grave near Bucha, Ukraine.
The horrors of Bucha shocked the world after Russian troops left. The mass grave that reporters saw Monday was just behind a trench dug out for a military vehicle. The bodies of seven civilians were retrieved. Two of the bodies were found with their hands tied and gunshot wounds to the knees and the head, Nebytov said. National police chief Igor Klimenko told the Interfax-Ukraine news agency on Monday that criminal investigations into the deaths of more than 12,000 Ukrainians included some found in mass graves. He said the mass killings of people also took place from snipers firing from tanks and armored personnel carriers. Bodies were found lying on streets and in their homes, as well as in mass graves. BUCHA, JUN 14 (AP): The lush green beauty of a pine forest with singing birds contrasted with the violent deaths of newly discovered victims of Russia’s war in Ukraine, as workers exhumed bodies from another mass grave near the town of Bucha on Kyiv’s outskirts. The hands of several victims were tied behind their backs. The gruesome work of digging up the remains coincided with the Ukrainian police chief ’s report that authorities have opened criminal investigations into the killings of more than 12,000 people since Russia’ invaded Ukraine on February 24. Workers wearing white hazmat suits and masks used shovels to exhume bodies from the soil of the forest, marking each section with small yellow numbered

olling Stones singer Mick Jagger is in quarantine in the Netherlands after testing positive for COVID-19, a spokesperson told Reuters on Tuesday, adding the band will miss a second show on its “Stones Sixty” European tour. Jagger experienced symptoms after arriving at Amsterdam’s Johan Cruyff Arena and Monday’s performance was cancelled at the last minute. A concert scheduled for Friday in Bern, Switzerland has been postponed to a later date, the band said in a statement. A spokesperson said that Jagger, 78, was adhering to a 5-day quarantining period in the Netherlands. Amsterdam was the fourth stop in the tour and followed an appearance in Liverpool on Thursday. “The Stones Milan show on Tuesday, June 21 at San Siro Stadium goes ahead and will take place as scheduled,” a statement said. Joaquin Phoenix won best actor for his performance as Joker, aka Arthur Fleck; he’s also expected to reprise his performance, though his deal is not settled yet. According to ‘Variety’, all other details about ‘Folie A Deux’ remain under wraps, so it’s unclear whether Gaga would also contribute any music to the project, but it’s a safe bet that it’s at least on the table. he Joaquin Phoenixstarrer ‘Joker 2’ - a sequel to the runaway 2019 hit film -- will be a musical for which singer Lady Gaga is in early talks. She will be seen portraying Harley Quinn - Joker’s love interest and partner in madness, in the film, reports ‘Variety’. Speculation that Harley Quinn would appear in the movie first bubbled to the surface after Phillips posted the cover of the screenplay to Instagram on June 7. ‘Variety’ states that the subtitle for the film, ‘Folie A Deux’, refers to a shared delusional disorder, and Joker’s only real companion -- other than Batman, anyway -- has been Quinn, a character first created for ‘Batman: The Animated Series’ in the early 1990s. Making ‘Joker 2’ a musical is another bold stroke by director Todd Phillips, who struck gold -- at the box office (with $1 billion in worldwide grosses) and the Oscars (with 12 nominations and two wins) -- when he reframed the Dark Knight’s number one villain as a loner anti-hero.

LONDON, JUN 14 (REUTERS): Former world number one Andy Murray has been forced to withdraw from the Queen’s Club Championship in London after picking up an abdominal injury, the tournament’s organisers said on Monday. Murray, a five-times champion at Queen’s who last won the title in 2016, suffered an abdominal injury during Sunday’s Stuttgart Open final loss to Italian Matteo Berrettini. The 35-year-old Scot’s movements were restricted in the deciding set when he called for the physiotherapist twice and received treatment at court-side before finishing the match. “The (Queen’s Club) tournament means a lot to me and it’s disappointing not to compete, especially after playing some good matches on grass already,” Murray said in a statement. He last won a title on grass at Wimbledon in 2016 while his last ATP Tour triumph came in Antwerp in 2019. He has two weeks to recover before Wimbledon gets underway on June 27.
NBA Finals: Warriors beat Boston 104-94; go 3-2 up
SAN FRANCISCO, JUN 14 (AGENCIES): The Golden State Warriors are one win away from a seventh NBA title after Andrew Wiggins inspired his team to a 104-94 win over the Boston Celtics. The Warriors lead the series 3-2 and can claim a fourth title in eight years with victory in game six of the best-of-seven contest in Boston on Thursday. Wiggins led Golden State with 26 points while Klay Thompson added a further 21. But Stephen Curry, who starred with 43 points in game four, missed all nine of his three-point attempts on Tuesday. Curry had never before gone without a threepointer in 133 career playoff games, but Warriors head coach Steve Kerr said the player was “probably due a game like this”. Wiggins’ performance comes 36 years after his father, Mitchell, came off the bench to lead the Houston Rockets to victory against the same opponents in game five of the 1986 NBA Finals. “It’s an opportunity of a lifetime,” Wiggins

T20: India beat South Africa India rout Hong Kong 4-0; qualify for Asian Cup 3rd by 48 runs; stay alive in series KO L K ATA , J U N 1 4 (PTI): Told to hang up his boots after a medical condition, Anwar Ali’s persistence and optimism in the face of seemingly insurmountable odds paid rich dividends here on Tuesday. Thanks to goals from Anwar, Sunil Chhetri -- he does that almost every other day -- Manvir Singh and Ishan Pandita, India capped off their historic AFC Asian Cup qualification campaign in style, sweeping aside a strong Hong Kong side 4-0 under heavy rains at the Salt Lake Stadium. Igor Stimac’s side brought out its A game on a stormy night and started off with a blitz as Anwar (2nd) and Chhetri (45’) gave India a 2-0 lead. It was then a tale of super subs as Manvir (85th) and Pandita (90+3rd) came off the bench to complete the rout and help India (nine points) top group D with three wins on the trot, ahead of Hong Kong (six). The Blue Tigers raced to a 1-0 lead with the 21-year-old centreback Anwar scoring his maiden international goal four years after his career nearly ended on health grounds. V I S A K H A PAT NA M , JUN 14 (IANS): Harshal Patel’s impressive bowling (4/25) helped India (179/5) thrash South Africa by 48 runs in the third T20I and stay alive in the five-match series at the Dr. Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy stadium, here on Tuesday. Quickfire fifties by Ruturaj Gaikwad (57 off 35) and Ishan Kishan (54 off 35) propelled India to 179/5 in 20 overs. Apart from Gaikwad and Kishan, Hardik Pandya (31 not out off 21) gave final flourish to Indian innings, after be-
ing invited to bat first. On the other hand, Dwaine Pretorius (2/29) was most successful bowler for Proteas while Keshav Maharaj (1/24), Kagiso Rabada (1/31) and Tabraiz Shamsi (1/36) also chipped in with one wicket each. In reply, four Proteas batters -- Reeza Hendricks (23), Dwaine Pretorius (20), Heinrich Klaasen (29), Wayne Parnell (22 not out) got starts but couldn’t convert them to big innings. Indian bowlers kept picking wickets at regular intervals and eventually
bowled out South Africa for 131/10 in 19.1 overs, winning by 48 runs. After Harshal, Yuzvendra Chahal (3/20) was India’s most successful bowler while Axar Patel (1/28) and Bhuvneshwar Kumar (1/21) also contributed well with the ball. Brief scores: India 179/5 in 20 Overs (Ruturaj Gaikwad 57, Ishan Kishan 54; Dwaine Pretorius 2/29) won to South Africa 131/10 in 19.1 Overs (Heinrich Klaasen 29, Reeza Hendricks 23; Harshal Patel 4/25) by 48 runs.
Australia edge Peru on penalties to qualify for World Cup QATAR, JUN 14 (AP): Australia qualified for a fifth straight World Cup after a 5-4 penalty shootout win over Peru in their intercontinental playoff on Monday. The teams failed to score in regulation and extra time at Ahmad bin Ali Stadium, and goalkeeper Andrew Redmayne, sent on as a substitute for captain Mat Ryan in the dying seconds of extra time, proved to be the star for Australia by saving the last penalty from Alex Valera. “I’m not a hero,” Redmayne said. “I just played my role like everyone else did tonight. I’m not going to take credit for this.” Taking off established No. 1 Ryan for Redmayne, who had made just two previous international appearances, was a major gamble from Socceroos coach Graham Arnold. Redmayne’s unconventional dancing and jumping along the goal-line with his aims and legs flailing as the Peru players stepped up, however, worked. “Andrew Redmayne is a very good penalty saver,” an emotional Arnold said in a post-match

More than eight hours before their face-off, both the teams confirmed the Asian Cup Finals berth, courtesy Palestine’s 4-0 win over Philippines who were eliminated after finishing as the worst runners-up from the six groups. Playing without any pressure, Stimac’s side made two bold changes by bringing in Sahal Abdul Samad and Udanta Singh in the starting XI in place of Liston Colaco and Manvir.

Prior to that, Sony Pictures Network had the TV media rights for a period of 10 years since the inception of the tournament with a bid of Rs 8200 crore.

of qualifying and then beating United Arab Emirates in the Asian playoff last week. “I’m just so proud of the players,” Arnold said. “Really, no one knows what these boys have been through to get here. It was so hard, the whole campaign. The way they’ve stuck at it. The way they’ve committed themselves to it … incredible. Twenty World Cup
Serena gets wildcard entry for Wimbledon singles
Croatia end France’s Nations League hopes
LONDON, JUN 14 (AP): Serena Williams is going to play at Wimbledon this year, after all. The All England Club announced on Tuesday that Williams was awarded a wild-card entry for singles. Williams has not competed anywhere since getting injured during the first set of her first-round match at the All England Club a year ago. And her name did not appear on the women’s singles entry list released by the grass-court Grand Slam tournament earlier this month. But Williams was among six women given a spot in the singles draw on Tuesday, along with five British players: Katie Boulter, Jodie Burrage, Sonay Kartal, Yuriko Miyazaki and Katie Swan. Two other women will get invitations “in due course,” the All England Club said. Seven of the eight men’s wildcard berths were also announced, including one for three-time major champion Stan Wawrinka.
qualifiers, 16 away from home. It’s been tough, but we did it.” The dramatic end followed two hours of little action. Australia finished regulation as the only team creating chances. Ajdin Hrustic, who scored the winning goal against the United Arab Emirates in the Asian playoff, had the first shot on target after 82 min-
utes, and went close again shortly after. Peru substitute Edison Flores headed against the foot of Australia’s post early in the second period of extra time, but that was as close as 12,000 Peruvian fans in the stadium came to celebrating a goal and as close as either team went to breaking the deadlock. “This is a very hard moment,” Peru goalkeeper Pedro Gallese said. “I had the dream of seeing our flag once again in the World Cup. “I am still proud of this team. Now we have to give them support, some teammates are really struggling now. “Australia did its part and deserved it.” The game drifted towards a shootout, where G a l l e s e s ave d M a r t i n Boyle’s opening spot kick. Australia drew level when Luis Advincula hit the post. Redmayne, with his distracting dance routine along the goal-line, saved from Valera, and the Socceroos clinched a spot in Qatar in November for their sixth overall World Cup appearance.

L O N D O N, J U N 1 4 (AGENCIES): France’s hopes of retaining the Nations League title are over after a home defeat by Croatia which means they cannot reach next year’s finals. Luka Modric’s fifthminute penalty after Ibrahima Konate fouled Ante Budimir was the game’s only goal. In Karim Benzema, Kylian Mbappe and Christopher Nkunku, France had three of the top four
scorers in Europe’s major leagues - but failed to find the net. Didier Deschamps’ side are bottom of Group A1 on two points from four games. “It was a difficult month of June in terms of results. We did not have the energy and the strength against teams who had more than us,” said Deschamps. “We lost a bit of self-confidence along the way but it’s mostly freshness that we lacked. When
you play so many games it is very very hard.” Denmark top the group on nine points - two points above Croatia - after a 2-0 win over Austria. Jonas Wind scored from Joakim Maehle’s cutback and then set up Andreas Skov Olsen to slot home their second. The final two rounds of games will be played in September with France hoping to avoid relegation to League B.
