Manipur Christian body discusses drug menace in State

GUWAHATI, APR 14 ( AGENCIES): Lok Sabha member Hema Malini apologised on Twitter on Friday regarding a previous post on the same website which had triggered an outrage among the Assamese people on social media, reports Sentinel Assam.

In a message aimed towards wishing people of multiple places of the country on the occasion of several important cultural and social-religious festivals organised during these days, the former Hindi film actress called the most important festival of Assam, to be the festival of Bihar.

“It is the Harvest season now. Tamizh Puthandu (New year), Baisakhi (Punjab), Bihu (Bihar) and Pohela Baisakh or Naba Barsha (Bengal) are some of the festivals celebrated. Wish you all a wonderful festival month.” Tweeted

Hema Malini on Thursday, which triggered a severe backlash for her ignorance about the people and their festival.

Notably, on the same day that the politician had made this comment on Twitter, the state of Assam set the world record for the largest Bihu dance group performing at a venue. Over 11100 boys and girls from different parts of the state of Assam displayed a very beautiful presentation of the traditional dance and music to set the world record in the presence of representatives from the Guinness World Records.

Even the Prime Minister of the country, Narendra Modi is scheduled to take part in another performance on Friday before he hands over the certificates of the World Record-making events to the participants of the Mega Bihu celebrations.

IMPHAL, APR 14: Church leaders in Manipur were sensitized on the evil impact of drugs and poppy cultivation during a discussion on “Drug Problems in Manipur: The Church Response (Impact, Strategy and Resolution”) hosted by All Manipur Christian Organization (AMCO) in Imphal on Friday. AMCO hosted the one-day consultation of Christian leaders, CSOs and various stakeholders on drug problem with an objective of creating awareness on the evil impact of drugs and poppy cultivation to Christian leaders, CSOs and stakeholders. The discussion was held in view of the undesirable colossal damaging impact of drugs and poppy cultivation on the youth, society, environment and ecosystem at large.

Various resource persons discussed and shared ideas and views on the impact of drugs and poppy in the state during the technical session of the consultation programme held in Imphal’s Hotel Imphal. The event was attended by several church leaders from across the state, particularly from hill districts.

The purpose of the consultation programme was to educate and engage church workers on sustainability issues in the hills, where large-scale poppy plantations persistently prevail to make a living, according to the organizers.
