Omicron spreading at unprecedented rate: WHO
GENEVA/NEW DELHI, DEC 14 (AGENCIES): The World Health Organization warned Tuesday that the new coronavirus variant Omicron was spreading at an unprecedented rate and was likely already present in most countries around the world. “Seventy-seven countries have now reported cases of Omicron, and the reality is that Omicron is probably in most countries, even if it hasn’t been detected yet,” WHO chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus told reporters, adding that “Omicron is spreading at a rate we have not seen with any previous variant.” Tedros said the WHO is worried that countries are dismissing omicron as a mild variant. Though omicron is more contagious, it is not yet clear whether the variant causes more mild or severe disease than past strains of the virus. “We have learned by now that we underestimate this virus at our peril,” Tedros said. “Even if omi-
WHO expects increase in number of deaths, hospitalisations from Covid variant Omicron cron does cause less severe disease, the sheer number of cases could once again overwhelm unprepared health systems,” he said. Tedros warned that vaccines alone will not protect the nations of the world from omicron, emphasizing the importance of masks and social distancing. “It’s not vaccines instead of masks. It’s not vaccines instead of distancing. It’s not vaccines instead of ventilation or hand hygiene. Do it all. Do it consistently. Do it well,” Tedros said. WHO also said that it expects an increase in the
number of hospitalisations and fatalities related to the new Omicron coronavirus strain, reported Sputnik. “A s c a s e nu m b e r s linked to a variant of concern increase globally, we expect the number of hospitalized cases and even deaths to be reported,” the WHO said in a statement. Meanwhile, several countries are considering ramping up the rollout of booster shots after early studies show the Omicron variant can still impact double-vaccinated people, though it is too early to fully understand how severe the impacts might be.

Our vaccines may become ineffective in emerging situations, says VK Paul
PTI: Amid concerns over Omicron, India's COVID Task Force chief VK Paul on Tuesday said there is a potential scenario that “our vaccines may become ineffective in emerging situations” and emphasised the need to be ready to modify the vaccines as per requirement. He also hoped that COVID in India is possibly moving in the direction of endemicity, where there is a low or moderate level of transmission going on. “We have experienced Delta shock and now the Omicron shock... there is a potential scenario that our vaccines may become ineffective in emerging situations in the wake of the last three weeks of living with Omicron, we have seen how such doubts have come up, some of them may be genuine, we still don't have the final picture,” he said. Speaking at an event organised by CII, Paul also emphasised the need for having vaccine platforms that are adaptable quickly with the changing nature of the variants.

Cachar Superintendent of Police Ramandeep Kaur said the incident took place at the remote village of Samtila, just 500 metres away from the Assam-Manipur border, which at times is used as a transit route by the militants. “The villagers informed us that around 10 cadres of the NSCN(IM) came to them in the morning and demanded some support like accommodation. AGARTALA, DEC 14 (AGENCIES): The Maharaja Bir Bikram Airport (MBB) in Agartala, is all set to be administered commercially under a PPP model by the Adani Group from 2022, reports The Assam Sentinel. According to an AAI official, the Adani group would take over Agartala’s muchhyped completely unified terminal building (NITB) soon after the ceremonial opening. The Airport Authority of India (AAI) is trying to monetize 25 airports, including Bhubaneshwar, Varanasi, Amritsar, Trichy, Indore, Raipur, Calicut, Coimbatore, Nagpur, Patna, Madurai, Surat, Ranchi, Jodhpur, Chennai, Vijayawada, Vadodara, Bhopal, Tirupati, Hubli, Imphal, Arunachal Pradesh. According to a source in the Ministry of Civil Aviation, all 25 airports would be administered jointly under the PPP model starting in 2022 for the next four years, with the ambitious goal of attracting investment worth
more than Rs 20,000 crores. Despite the airport’s PPP status, the ministry stated that the airport’s ownership must remain completely with the government. With activities in Delhi, Mumbai, Ahmedabad, Lucknow, Mangaluru, Jaipur, Guwahati, and Thiruvananthapuram, the Adani Group, based in Ahemadabad, is a prominent private participant in airport and port building. In the midst of the COVID-19 outbreak, the port behemoth Adani firm joined the airport promotional sector in 2019 and has secretly taken over various Indian airports. Tripura’s rich cul-
tural legacy is reflected in the MBB airport in Agartala, which is brand new and elegantly adorned. Similarly, the modern airport terminal is not very ancient. Agartala’s much-hyped new integrated terminal building (NITB) is anxiously awaiting commissioning in the middle of Asset Monetization reverberation. The AAI estimates that the overall airport assets for monetisation account for 18% of total airport assets. According to an AAI source, the total value of assets under consideration for monetisation for the years 2022-25 is expected to be Rs 20,782 crore.

IMPHAL, DEC 14: Leaders of Joint Committee on Inner Permit System (JCILPS) on Tuesday engaged in a heated exchange of words with the police as the latter tried to disperse a sit-inprotest staged in Imphal’s Keishampat Junction. Leaders and members of the JCILPS staged the sitin-protest pressing the state government to implement the provisions of the Inner Line Permit (ILP) system effectively. At the beginning of the protest, a police team rushed to the spot and asked protesters to disperse while citing promulgation of section 144 of CrPC. The police also alleged that they were staging the protest without mandatory permission from the district administration. When some leaders went to obtain the necessary permission, the police ordered the protesters to disperse following which pro-
only for the protection of the indigenous people from the ever increasing domination by the outsiders. If it did not serve the purpose, there is no use of such a regulation, she said, while asking the purpose of introducing the regulation if it was to be enforced just for the namesake. Even after two years of the introduction of the regulation, the guidelines and provisions remained only on paper, she alleged. On Monday, the JCILPS, an apex body of various CSOs, had alleged that ILP system has been reduced to a “toothless tiger” as the pertinent authorities failed to translate into action provisions of the regulation while announcing a series of sit-in-protest from today (Tuesday). Among others, the JCILPS demanded publication of rules and regulations in the state gazette before the enforcement of Model Code of Conduct for elections and effective implementation of provisions of Section 20 of the regulation that deals with the penalization of offenders.

VA R A NA S I , D E C 1 4 (PTI): Prime Minister Narendra Modi, along with Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, ventured out on the streets of Varanasi in the early hours of Tuesday and visited the justinaugurated Kashi Vishwanath Dham and the Banaras railway station. I n a t we e t p o s t e d around 1 am, Modi said he inspected “key development works” in the temple town. Varanasi is the prime minister’s parliamentary constituency since 2014. He arrived here on a two-day visit on Monday. On Monday morning, Modi visited the Kal Bhairav Mandir. In the afternoon, he inaugurated the first phase of the ambitious Kashi Vishwanath Corridor project, being referred to as Kashi Vishwanath Dham, and in the evening, witnessed the spectacular Ganga “aarti” and a light-and-sound show

Sunset on BJP from Goa, UP, Punjab: Mamata
B H O PA L , D E C 1 4 (IANS): A week after India’s first Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) General Bipin Rawat, his wife Madhulika Rawat and 11 other armed forces personnel died in a chopper crash near Coonoor in Tamil Nadu on December 8, his brother-inlaw (brother of Madhulika Rawat) Yash Vardhan Singh levelled some serious allegations against the Central government. Singh, who is a native of Madhya Pradesh’s Suhagpur town in Shahdol district, on Tuesday wrote in his Facebook account that a road was constructed on his land in his home town (Suhagpur) without consulting him. Singh alleged that for the road construction, the administration has bulldozed a ‘Samadhi Sthal’ of his ancestors and also cut down a number of trees. “While the funeral process of my JijaJi (brotherin-law Gen. Rawat) and
Didi (sister) was going on in Delhi, at the same time on the direction of the Centre, the construction of a national highway was carried out without consulting me. Besides this, an order has been issued to register a case against me if I object to this road construction,” Singh’s Facebook note read. However, Singh did not specifically mention which department has ordered the registration of a case against him if he objected. To ascertain the authenticity of the issue, IANS spoke to Shahdol district collector Vandana Vaidya. “Yes, Vardhan Singh had given a portion of his land for road (National Highway) construction in 2016. He has received a compensation of Rs 2,77,000 for his land. Further, during the widening of the road, another portion of land was required and a notification was issued to acquire 0.56 hectare land.”
PANAJI, DEC 14 (PTI): Trinamool Congress chairperson Mamata Banerjee on Tuesday claimed the “sun has started setting” for the BJP in states like Goa, Uttar Pradesh and Punjab, where assembly polls are due in early 2022, and this trend will continue and cover the entire country. She said the Congress should fight the BJP in right earnest instead of just making tall claims about taking on the saffron outfit. The West Bengal chief minister was speaking at a public meeting where she formally announced the TMC’s pre-poll alliance with the Maharashtrawadi Gomantak Party (MGP), which is the state’s oldest regional outfit, for the upcoming Goa elections. “You will have to work to protect Goa. Goa is India, don’t think that Goa is very small. Sunrise happens in Goa. When Goa smiles, India smiles,” she said at the meeting in Panaji on the second day of her tour to the coastal state. “There is also sunset in Goa. The BJP’s sunset has started from Goa, UP, Punjab... entire India. They have cheated the people a lot,” Banerjee said.
of his late-night visit to Kashi Vishwanath Dham, which he dedicated to the people a few hours ago. Clad in a grey kurta, white pyjama and a black jacket with a grey muffler thrown over it, Modi took the people walking on the streets by surprise, even as the security personnel tried to ensure that no one ventured close to him. Later, in another tweet, the prime minister said: “Next stop...Banaras station. We are working to enhance rail connectivity as well as ensure clean, modern and passenger friendly railway stations.” He also shared photos of his visit to the redeveloped station after 1 am. The Banaras railway station was earlier known as Manduadih and was renamed early this year. The Twitter handle of the Indian Railways had shared pictures of the deco-
rated station on Monday night. Amid chants of “Har Har Mahadev” and “Modi, Modi”, the prime minister was showered with rose petals and unbound adulation on Monday morning as he travelled through the streets of Varanasi, which have been plastered with huge posters bearing his image and greetings. After his visit to the Kal Bhairav Mandir, the prime minister’s convoy was moving through the narrow streets when a man sought to offer a pink “pagdi” and a scarf to him, but the security personnel pushed him away. Modi then motioned from inside the car and the man was allowed to offer the “pagdi” to him. The man, who was wearing a saffron robe, also offered a “pitambari” (saffron “angvastra”) to the prime minister, which he accepted with folded hands and a smile.

11 CMs of BJP-ruled states to visit at Ram Janmabhoomi AYODHYA (UP), DEC 14 (PTI): Eleven chief ministers of BJP-ruled states will offer prayers at the makeshift temple at Ram Janmabhoomi in Ayodhya on Wednesday. Protocol officials of the 11 chief ministers and three deputy chief ministers reached Ayodhya on Tuesday. The chief ministers were expected to arrive in Lucknow from Varanasi on Tuesday evening and after a night stay in the state capital, reach Ayodhya by 11 am on Wednesday, a senior district official said. They will visit the Hanumangarhi temple around 2 pm and then offer prayers at the Ram Janmabhoomi, where a temple in being constructed. Chief Ministers from Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Arunachal Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Assam,
Nagaland, Manipur, Tripura, Gujarat, Haryana and Goa, and two deputy chief ministers from Bihar and one from Arunachal Pradesh will be visiting the holy city, the official said. Official sources indicated that chief ministers of Sikkim, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Karnataka and Puducherry may also visit Ayodhya. The chief ministers are in Varanasi, where they attended the inauguration of the Kashi Vishwanath Dham by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday. They also took part in a conclave of chief ministers. The prime minister posted a picture with the chief ministers on Twitter, saying “Just concluded an extensive meeting in Kashi with @BJP4India Chief Ministers and Deputy Chief Ministers.”
Attack on police bus was planned: IGP Kashmir SRINAGAR, DEC 14 (PTI): The attack on a police bus here that claimed the lives of three cops was pre-planned as the armed police team was returning to camp at same time it usually did after performing routine duties, a senior police official said on Tuesday. Inspector General of Police (Kashmir) Vijay Kumar was speaking to reporters at the wreath-laying ceremony for one of the slain policemen. “The bus carrying 25 policemen was returning to the camp, as per routine, when three terrorists of Jaish-e-Mohammad opened fire on the vehicle,” he said. “This was a planned attack. They must have conducted recce and seen that the bus is coming back every day in routine after getting off duty,” the officer said said.
K’taka to pass anti-conversion bill as attacks on Christians increase
BENGALURU, DEC 14 (AGENCIES): Karnataka’s winter assembly session begins Monday, which will see the tabling of the controversial anti-conversion bill, at a time when there have been a spate of attacks on Christians and churches across the state, reports The Print. The latest of these attacks came over the weekend. On Saturday, a swordwielding man entered a church in Belagavi and threatened the pastor. The video of the incident, recorded on CCTV cameras, has gone viral. While church representatives filed a complaint with the local police, an arrest is yet to be made. “The accused seems to be of an unstable mind. A complaint has been filed by the church authorities. The accused seems to be a repeat offender. We are in the process of tracing the accused,” Dr Thiyagarajan, Commissioner, Belagavi Police, told The Print. On Sunday, a group of Hindutva activists disrupted a prayer meeting at Srinivasapura in Kolar alleging illegal religious conversion. Police had to intervene and calm tensions. Members of the Christian community have been
claiming that the attacks have been increasing ever since the government spoke of introducing the anticonversion bill. Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai and Home Minister Araga Jnanendra have, however, insisted that the law will strengthen already existing legislation against alleged forced conversions.
“The bill is only to prevent religious conversions by inducement,” Bommai told reporters in Hubballi Sunday, adding that the law department was studying similar legislation passed by Odisha. “The draft will be placed before the cabinet and if approved, then it will be tabled in the Belagavi session,” Bommai said.
Opposition parties, minorities up in arms
With the Bharatiya Janata Party-led Karnataka government pushing for the anti-conversion bill, opposition parties as well as minority communities, especially Christians, have opposed it. Karnataka Pradesh Congress committee chief D.K. Shivakumar has repeatedly stated that the bill is antiminority. “There is already a law to prevent unlawful conversions through force, allurement or inducement. What is the need for a new law? This is only to harass minorities and embolden attacks on them,” Shivakumar told reporters in Bengaluru Friday. The Christian community in Karnataka has alleged that ever since the chief minister spoke of introducing the anti-conversion law, attacks on religious minorities, churches, and prayer meetings have increased. “The issue of forced conversion is a highly exaggerated subject. Many of our BJP leaders have studied in Christian schools and they have also chosen Christian hospitals for the medical treatment. None of them were forcefully converted,” Rev. Dr Peter Machado, Archbishop of the Bengaluru Diocese and President of the Karnataka Regional Catholic Bishops’ Council, said in a press statement issued on 4 December. The statement comes in the backdrop of several BJP leaders alleging that Hindus were being lured to convert across the state.

Spate of attacks
In October, members of Vishva Hindu Parishad and Bajrang Dal barged into a church in Hubballi and sang Hindu prayer songs, bhajans during a prayer meeting. Then on 19 October, a pastor from Hubbali, Somu Avaradhi, was arrested on charges of converting a Dalit man, following protests led by BJP MLA Arvind Bellad. On 28 November, members of the Bajrang Dal stormed into a church in Belur of Hassan district alleging illegal conversions. A video of devotees, mostly women, fighting off the men went viral. Weeks since, the case has seen no FIRs or arrests. The matter has been dropped as “amicably settled”. Earlier on 7 November, members of the radical Hindutva outfit Sri Rama Sene Hindustan locked up a pastor and Christian devotees during a prayer meeting at Maratha colony in Belagavi district. An FIR, however, was filed against the pastor, while those who disrupted the prayer meeting faced no consequences, with the Christian community alleging that this was becoming the norm. “The pastor received bail soon after the FIR was filed but no complaint was received against the members who stalled the prayer meeting. Hence, no case has been filed against them,” Dr Thiyagarajan, Commissioner, Belagavi Police, told The Print. He also denied charges from the Christian community that the police had asked them to not hold prayer meetings until the legislative session in Belagavi concluded.

Ideological bogey
here has been increased attacks on Christians in India since 2014 and most surprising, such incidents have by and large, are hardly reported in the media and gradually being relegated to the background. This is a clever strategy used and whether the media in general is part of it is a matter of debate and discussion. In recent months this year, the attacks resumed especially after the relaxation of lockdown in the pandemic. There were 305 incidents of violence in the 273 days of 2021 between January and September, stated a report by the Association for Protection of Civil Rights (APCR), titled “Christians Under Attack in India”. The report says that from January and September Uttar Pradesh recorded the highest monthly incidents with 66, followed by Chhattisgarh at 47; while Karnataka recorded 32 incidents. Attacks on Christians in India is nothing new. It has been going on for several decades. Those involved in targeting Christians are right wing extremists and self-acclaimed defenders of the Hindu faith. These elements allege that they are justified in targeting Christians because Hindus were being converted to Christianity through fraudulent means or coercion etc. Karnataka has come under limelight in recent months for the spate of attacks on Christians by right wing Hindu extremist groups owing allegiance to the Sangh and its political affiliate, the BJP. However, it must also be noted that all anti-Christian elements are those who share the common thread of hatred and intolerance against other religious minorities. Though the BJP espouses majoritarianism or a HInduised India, the Congress also has some elements harbouring the same mindset even if the party as a policy, swears by secularism. The accusation against Christians is that they resort to fraud and illegal means for conversion of people from other faiths into Christianity. Therefore, many states including previous Congress-ruled states had adopted the Anti-Conversion Act. The eight such states include - Arunachal Pradesh, Odisha, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Gujarat, Himachal Pradesh, Jharkhand, and Uttarakhand. The anti-conversion law is unconstitutional since it violates the Article 25 of the Indian constitution. The Article states that “all persons are equally entitled to freedom of conscience and the right to freely profess, practice, and propagate religion subject to public order, morality and health.” Further, Article 26 says that all denominations can manage their own affairs in matters of religion. The law is directed against other non-Hindu religions since it seeks to deprive citizens of their right to choose which faith to follow. There are enough laws to deal with fraud or force with regard to conversions, especially if this concern is directed solely against Christian missionaries. The anti-conversion law is by default, anti-Christian. Linking conversion to fraud and force, is in itself a lie that has no evidence nor substance. Christianity in India has dwindled from 2.34 percent of India’s population in 2001 to 2.30 percent in 2011. On the other hand, it is called ‘ghar wapsi’ (homecoming) when Christians or Muslims are reconverted to Hinduism. These reconversions are done through fraud and coercion by VHP and their ilk. However there is no rule or law against reconversion. These signs are clear- that India is gradually turning into a nation of one religion, one ideology and one flag unless the silent majority wake up and act.
DailyDevotion The Great Life
Peace I leave with you, My peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your heart be troubled… —John 14:27 Whenever we experience something difficult in our personal life, we are tempted to blame God. But we are the ones in the wrong, not God. Blaming God is evidence that we are refusing to let go of some disobedience somewhere in our lives. But as soon as we let go, everything becomes as clear as daylight to us. As long as we try to serve two masters, ourselves and God, there will be difficulties combined with doubt and confusion. Our attitude must be one of complete reliance on God. Once we get to that point, there is nothing easier than living the life of a saint. We encounter difficulties when we try to usurp the authority of the Holy Spirit for our own purposes. God’s mark of approval, whenever you obey Him, is peace. He sends an immeasurable, deep peace; not a natural peace, “as the world gives,” but the peace of Jesus. Whenever peace does not come, wait until it does, or seek to find out why it is not coming. If you are acting on your own impulse, or out of a sense of the heroic, to be seen by others, the peace of Jesus will not exhibit itself. This shows no unity with God or confidence in Him. The spirit of simplicity, clarity, and unity is born through the Holy Spirit, not through your decisions. God counters our self-willed decisions with an appeal for simplicity and unity. My questions arise whenever I cease to obey. When I do obey God, problems come, not between me and God, but as a means to keep my mind examining with amazement the revealed truth of God. But any problem that comes between God and myself is the result of disobedience. Any problem that comes while I obey God (and there will be many), increases my overjoyed delight, because I know that my Father knows and cares, and I can watch and anticipate how He will unravel my problems.

Benefits of prepaid metering
nergy Conservation: With the global drive to reduce energy consumption and especially during this power crisis in India and Nagaland in Particular. It is a big concern for all to think of conserving power. With Nagaland having a meager generating capacity of 27 MW there is no alternative but to conserve energy. Without Electricity one cannot think of surviving or moving ahead in any aspect. In Nagaland the domestic consumption accounts for approximately 80 % . Apart from indirect energy used in production of household items, energy is directly used for cooling and heating, refrigerating, cooking, laundry, lighting and operation of household appliances/gadgets, which is innumerable. The need for domestic energy conservation at all level with country’s increasingly dependency on electricity usage is the need of the hour. Revenue Improvement: With the present inefficient revenue collection and high customer debt burden in Nagaland due to illegal and rampant use of power by means of theft of energy in the form of hooking, tampering of Energy Meters and By-passing of Energy meters. There is another major factor affecting the Department of power and that is energy losses and growing customer dissatisfaction due to the erroneous meter reading or no meter reading, estimated/wrong billing and abysmal service delivery leading to heavy loss in the revenue collection. At this juncture, we have no options but adoption in the shift of metering policy to prepaid Meters. Reduced Power outages: With the energy conservation, The burden on the Distribution transformers will be greatly reduced hence power outages will be reduced due to fuse getting blown off and the need for frequent maintenance of your Distribution Transformers and the Distribution network which irritates the consumers will be reduced. Allows the consumers to budget: Transparent energy management services,
T
energy savings, elimination of estimated billing, reduced home visits. Ultimately, it is expected to put the consumer in control of energy consumption. With this energy consumption under your control the life of your Electrical appliances/ gadgets is expected to rise which will account for a great saving surpassing the cost of energy charges that has been paid. Pay-as-you-go system: It will allow customer to buy electricity as and when is required by him. Hence the consumers need not stay in long queues to pay your Electricity bills. Display of remaining Credit: The prepaid meters have the provision to display the actual remaining credit, money value as well as the total kWh consumption. This will put consumers in the position to manage their energy purchase to suit their requirements. Since the meter displays credit instead of energy units it’s easy for the consumer to co-relate the tariff with his expenditure. No more Tension: Consumers don’t have to worry for erroneous bill due to wrong meter reading or estimated /average bills hence increasing the life span of the consumers due to tension free life. Awareness on Electrical Hazards and Safety Measures In this era of fast developing and dependency on usage of Electricity, demand for Power is increasing at such a pace that it is difficult to maintain the stability and consistency, the pace at which the world is progressing and developing is immeasurable. Electrical hazards and safety measure awareness must be enhanced to save lives and property. Electricity helps to facilitate economic development and it is a well-known fact that electricity is essential to everyday life, without it life will be boring both at home and at the work place. As much as we depend on electricity so also the importance of electrical safety awareness for the electricity users must be adhered. Electrical accidents occur due to shear negligence and lack of
knowledge. The electric shock may likely occur when the body becomes part of an electric circuit leading to electric shocks under the following conditions. i) A person may have contact with both conductors in a circuit. ii) A person may provide a way between an ungrounded conductor and the ground. iii) A person may provide a way between the ground and a conducting material that is in contact with an ungrounded conductor. iv) The degree of shock an individual receive is dependent on several factors. Such as the Voltage level, the amount of current that is conducted through the body, the path of the current through the body, the duration of time a person is subjected to the current and the skin resistance. That is when the skin is wet or moist the degree of shock will be greater. Causes of Fire and Electrical Shocks: 1. The major causes of fire in buildings are arcing or sparking due to loose electrical connections, overheating of electrical equipment & appliances, lamp holder. 2. Underrated cable size during installation: - Many of the electrical consumers are in the habit of compromising with the quality of Electrical wires used at home for internal Electrification, thereby using underrated cable sizes, low and cheap quality of wires in order to reduce the cost involved 3. Overloading of socket due to lack of knowledge, where 5A sockets are connected to the appliances with more than 5 A thereby causing the sockets to be overheated leading to short circuit 4. Use of overrated fuse and MCB in which case the protective device will not respond as desired. 5. Improper earthing or no earthing at home and for Electrical appliances. Not installing lightning arrestors at home, completely exposing the safety of human lives as well as the Electrical
appliances at home. Proper earthing for equipment’s and lightning arrestors preferably with copper plates should be mandatory. 6. Self styled engineering, where the Electrical Engineers and technical experts are never consulted or engaged during the laying & estimation of Electrical wiring. Rather the owner of the building or the wireman is the Electrical Engineer in this regard. 7. The level of awareness and knowledge of basic rules of electrical hazards and safety measures among electricity users are not well informed. 8. Constr uction of buildings very near to the Electrical networks, we come across many buildings constructed so close to the live wires and other electrical networks, this practice is very hazardous. The main objective should be focused in safety of human lives and not space. Indian Electricity Rules 1956 clearly mentions the safe distance to be maintained as charted below. Non-adherence of these guidelines has caused a lot of hardship for the Department of Power as well as cost many precious lives.
installation or electrification. 2. Use only approved wires and cables of appropriate size according to the load requirement. 3. Use appropriate connection pins for the relevant equipment. 4. Check for cuts, joint or cracks in your cables 5. Follow electrical isolation procedures for handling any electrical equipment’s. 6. Assure yourself and make sure that there is proof of isolation before you touch or work in any circuit. 7. Repair electrical equipment’s only by authorized personnel’s. 8. Insulate all the junction joints and make sure there are no breaks 9. Wear electrically resistant gloves and equipment’s 10. E n s u r e p r o p e r grounding of all electrical equipment’s 11. Install Lightning arrestors in your buildings. 12. Ensure to inspect your electrical equipment’s and appliances regularly by qualified electrician. 13. Unplug your appliances from the socket when not in use.

The Summit for Democracy
he summit hosted by the US president, instead of bringing together democratic voices at a common international platform, gave birth to many controversies. A US sponsored twoday virtual democracy summit wrapped up last week. It was promised by President Joe Biden during his election campaign last year, as he wanted to show that the US has departed from the “America First’ philosophy of Donald Trump and instead will focus on an event that was more about starting a global conversation about how best to halt backsliding than producing immediate results or expanding democracy’s reach. Biden and fellow leaders announced initiatives to stem autocracies from misusing big tech to stifle dissent, enhance election integrity, bolster independent media and other modest efforts that the president said would “seed fertile ground for democracies to bloom around the world.” But he also acknowledged that he path ahead was difficult for democracies amid a rise of authoritarianism around the globe. We know how hard the work is that’s going to be ahead of us, but we also know that we are up to the challenge, he said in remarks to close the virtual meeting. However, Biden has been criticised over the guest list of the summit as well as that the summit was targeted at China and Russia and not other autocratic governments and it also
missed out on inviting the middle-eastern leaders. Chinese and Russian Criticism Both China and Russia fiercely criticised the summit, with their ambassadors writing a joint essay ahead of the gathering. They wrote the Biden administration’s decision to hold the summit reflected a ‘Cold-War mentality’ that may stoke up ideological confrontation and cause rift globally. China, irate over Taiwanese participation, produced a long white paper on the advantages of the Chinese model of democracy. It extoled that there is no fixed model of democracy; it manifests itself in many forms. But the West propagate the principles of One Person, One Vote and party competition underlying the western electoral system as the sole criterion for democracy. The White House also faced scrutiny over nations invited to the summit. According to CIVICUS Monitor, a group that monitors civic freedoms across the globe, only 5% of the population of the 111 countries represented at the summit live in countries where the right to free speech, right to protest and other core civic rights are fully respected. Several countries identified due to concerns raised by civil society groups and the US State Department for their serious anti-democratic trends or human rights concerns — including India, Iraq, Pakistan, Poland, Ukraine and the
Philippines — were invited. In its 2021 report on political freedoms, Freedom House lists Washington’s duplicity on the issue more clearly. The report gives Hungary a score of sixty-nine, putting it in the “partially free” category. But Ukraine receives an even more insipid score of sixty—continuing its steady decline over the past several years. India’s score is sixtyseven; the Philippines - fiftysix; Kosovo - fifty-four; and Pakistan, a dismal thirtyseven—barely keeping that country out of the “unfree” category. Critics say that the tactic for smaller countries with highly questionable democratic credentials to get Washington’s invite for the democracy summit was to obediently follow the US lead on important international issues. Jen Psaki, the White House press secretary described the invitations as not intended as a ‘stamp of approval’ but the administration’s desire to seek a diverse range of voices and faces and representatives at the discussion. The US stance As per the protagonists of The Summit for Democracy, it had a larger geopolitical ambition. It reflects a prominent view within the Biden administration that assembling a global coalition of democracies can counter China’s rise and continued Russian aggression. Biden has repeatedly made a case that the like-minded allies and US need to show the world that democracies are a far better
vehicle for societies than autocracies. It is a central tenet of Biden’s foreign policy outlook. But his first year in office has been a period that he says has been marked by a “backward slide” for democracy around the globe. The initiative, also called for establishing a voluntary written code of conduct meant to guide government and tech companies on human rights criteria for export and licensing policy. Under the global charter for digital public goods, governments, civil society groups, software engineers and tech companies would declare principles for open source tech products. Biden also pledged that the US would spend up to $424 million in the next year around the world to support independent media, anti-corruption work and more. However, the choice of panellists to reflect US’s views also courted controversy. Brad Smith, president of Microsoft, spoke on how to use ‘technology for democracy.’ John Brothers, president of the billionaire investment giant T. Rowe Price, which holds a massive portion of Venezuelan debt, moderated a discussion on ‘responsible investment.’ Kent Walker, president of Global Affairs for Google, which has publicly admitted to censoring the World Socialist Web Site, spoke of how private enterprises can aid ‘democracy.’ Critics assert that the people who could be described as holding a completely contrary position on these issues were
invited to speak on how to tackle them, which seems quite farcical. Biden said it was also a moment for the United States to look inward about shoring up its own democratic institutions, he said, that the sacred right to vote, to vote freely, the right to have your vote counted is the threshold liberty for democracy. But this dos not match with what is really happening in the US, movements like Black Lives Matter raised the issue of racial and colour discrimination, on which the Summit was completely silent. The overall conclusion seems to be that the Summit for Democracy would have been more effective had it remained focused on strengthening and defending democracy rather than highlighting contradictions between democracies and authoritarian rules.
As some critics pointed out behind the pretences of defending democracy against meddling autocrats, lies Washington’s drive to maintain its global economic hegemony. The case for democracy is simple: Democracy is the only political vehicle, which could protect minority voices while also protecting the rights of journalists, citizens, and opposition leaders to criticise their government. It also underlined the continuous efforts by President Biden to leave a political legacy. Asad Mirza is a political commentator based in New Delhi. Plight of rickshaw pullers Sir,
Due to the high number of auto rickshaws and car in Dimapur city, administration was bound to impose traffic rules restricting entry of rickshaw puller on the main roads of the city. The rickshaw pullers in Dimapur have been badly affected and due to that they are leaving their profession for their livelihood, which will definitely affect the poor people. On October 3, eight people, including four protesting farmers, died after being mowed down by a SUV belonging to Union Minister Ajay Mishra Teni’s son Ashish Mishra. A local journalist was also killed in the violence. The SIT has so far arrested Ashish Mishra, Luvkush, Ashish Pandey, Shekhar Bharti, Ankit Das, Latif, Sishupal, Nandan Singh, Satyam Tripathi, Sumit Jaiswal, Dharmendra Banjara, Rinku Rana and Ullas Trivedi. They are lodged in the Lakhimpur Kheri district jail. Meanwhile, the Lucknow bench of the Allahabad High Court has given two weeks’ time to the state government to file a counteraffidavit on Ashish Mishra’s bail application. During the hearing of the case, additional advocate general Vinod Shahi apprised the court about the ongoing investigation. Shahi said that statements of a large number of witnesses were still to be recorded.

NATIONAL 4 more Omicron cases detected in Delhi: Satyendar NEW DELHI, DEC 14 (PTI): Delhi Health Minister Satyendar Jain on Tuesday said four more cases of the new COVID-19 variant, Omicron, have been detected in Delhi and all have a travel history to foreign countries. The Omicron variant of the coronavirus has not spread in the community so far and the situation is under control, he added. “So far, six people have been found Omicron positive in the capital. One of them has been discharged. All of them had travelled to foreign countries and were transferred to the Lok Nayak Jai Prakash Narayan (LNJP) hospital from the (Indira Gandhi International) airport,” Jain told reporters. The condition of the remaining five Omicronpositive patients is stable, he said. So far, 74 travellers have been sent from the airport to the hospital, where a special ward has been set up for isolating and treating suspected cases of Omicron. Thirty-six of them have been discharged and 38 are admitted to the hospital. Jain said the government is fully prepared to tackle the spread of any variant of the coronavirus.
Tenure of CBI chief now extended to 5 years
NEW DELHI, DEC 14 (PTI): Parliament has passed a bill to extend the tenure of the director of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to a maximum of five years from the present two years. Minister of State for Personnel Jitendra Singh moved ‘The Delhi Special Police Establishment (Amendment) Bill, 2021’ for consideration in Rajya Sabha on Tuesday amidst a walkout by the opposition over the suspension of their 12 members. The bill was later passed in the Upper House by a voice vote. Lok Sabha had already cleared the bill on December 3, 2021. While moving the Bill, Singh said the government is working to check corruption and to ensure and enhance transparency. In recent years, he said, the nation is faced with the triple menace of corruption, black money and international crime that is linked to drug trafficking, terrorism and criminal offences and all these are a threat to the security and financial structure of the country. The methodology of crime has changed and is highly sophisticated and structured which makes crime investigation a far
more difficult task, he said, stressing that the bill will help maintain the pace of probe. “These amendments have been brought in also because the financial action task force, which India is a member country, also expects us to improve the resources for financial crime investigation and the international crime,” he said. In India, the tenure of the director CBI was fixed for two years. “I think, contrary to the popular impression that has gone to certain quarters, the amendment does not seek to increase the tenure rather it seeks to put an embargo on the tenure of five years. The existing law under the DSP Act provides for tenure not more than two years,” Singh said. The government is suggesting a tenure of not more than five years, making it more institutionalised and streamlined and democratised, Singh added. The minister underscored that each one-year extension of tenure will have a reason put on record and “we will go through the same selection process’’. During his speech, Singh was interrupted by the opposition members, who were protesting against the
LAKHIMPUR KHERI, DEC 14 (IANS): The Special Investigation Team (SIT) probing the October 3 Lakhimpur Kheri violence, has filed an application before the Chief Judicial Magistrate (CJM) to include new sections against the 13 accused to make their offence punishable under attempt to murder charges. Vidhyaram Diwakar, the SIT investigating officer, filed the application last week in the CJM’s court for adding new sections in the warrant, replacing sections 279, 338 and 304A of the IPC.
In his application, the investigating officer pointed out that the incident was well-planned and a deliberate act, and not of negligence or callousness. The investigating officer has requested to add Sections 307 (attempt to murder), 326 (Voluntarily causing grievous hurt by dangerous weapons or means), 34 (Acts done by several persons in furtherance of common intention) of the Indian Penal Code after replacing sections 279 (Rash driving or riding on a public way), 338 (Whoever causes grievous hurt to any

Most wanted Pakistani terrorist Abu Zarar ‘Unholy alliance’ of MVA killed in Kashmir’s Poonch: Indian Army rejected in MLC polls: BJP
NEW DELHI, DEC 14 (PTI): Over 55 per cent of India’s adult population has received both the doses of COVID-19 vaccine, Union Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya said on Tuesday. According to Health Ministry officials, 55.52 per cent of the eligible population has been fully vaccinated with 87 per cent people receiving the first dose of the vaccine. In a tweet, Mandaviya said that with over 55 per cent of the eligible population fully vaccinated now, India has achieved another milestone in its fight against Covid. PM Narendra Modii’s ‘Har Ghar Dastak’ campaign has further strengthened the nation’s collective fight against COVID-19. With the administration of 66,98,601 vaccine doses in the last 24 hours, India’s COVID-19 vaccination coverage has exceeded 133.88 crore, according to provisional reports till 7 am.
SRINAGAR, DEC 14 (AGENCIES): Security forces claimed to have killed the most wanted Pakistani terrorists Abu Zarar in the Surankot area of Poonch. In an ongoing operation, the Indian army claimed to have killed the most wanted Pakistani terrorist in the ongoing encounter near Bufliyaz in the Surankot area of Poonch district. According to the army handout, “The terrorists attempted to get away by opening fire on Security Forces, but this Foreign Terrorist was eliminated in return fire by the Security Forces, while his accomplice is on the run. The recovery from the terrorist incl AK- 47, four magazines (filled), one grenade and some Indian currency. The recovered items clearly reveal Pak complicity with this terrorist.” In this particular case,
Abu Zarar the Pak- trained and sponsored foreign terrorist was first detected in August this year. He is probably part of Pak efforts to revive terrorism in the South of Pir Panjal region, said the army. While the terrorist and his accomplice have been on the run, taking shelter in deep jungles for the past few months, their need for food, clothing & communication (mobile) forced them to contact the civilian population. Indian Army in a joint effort with the JKP, monitored this mobile communication on
a near real-time basis while the locals provided crucial information on the move of suspects. This enabled the security forces to corner the terrorists, force them to get away to higher reaches of Pir Panjal ranges despite the onset of winters. As the terrorists got isolated & moved away from civilian-populated areas, the Indian army & JKP launched clinical operations on receiving specific input from locals in the Behramgala area. Army official added “Joint efforts of India army & Jammu Kashmir police continue to show positive results in Rajouri, Poonch region due to unwavering support of locals. He added This is the eighth terrorist to be eliminated this year. Recently Haji Arif, a dreaded terrorist guide was also eliminated on the line of control in the Rajouri sector.
NEW DELHI, DEC 14 (IANS): Riding high on the party’s victory in the Maharashtra Legislative Council polls, the BJP on Tuesday said that the ‘unholy alliance’ of the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) in the state has been rejected. The saffron party has won four out of the six seats in the Council polls for which elections were held last week. Bharatiya Janata Party national general secretary and Maharashtra in-charge C T Ravi told IANS that the message is loud and clear that people and elected representatives of the local bodies are against the MVA. “It’s a strong message to the MVA leadership that no one in Maharashtra accepts their ‘unholy alliance’ of three parties, Shiv Sena, Congress and NCP. Unholy alliance of MVA has been rejected in the Legislative Council polls,” Ravi said. Ravi claimed that the
MVA is trying to present a strong mathematical position in the elections but the results show a different picture. “The MVA partners did everything to win the Maharashtra Legislative Council election. But despite being three parties coming together, the MVA was not able to defend Dhule where the mathematics was in their favour. They are concentrating on mathematics but the BJP is focusing on winning people’s support through its developmental agenda,” Ravi said. He claimed that there is strong resentment within the cadres of the MVA partners and the results are a reflection of that resentment. “Leaders of Shiv Sena, Congress and NCP joined hands to form the MVA government in the state while the cadre is against the unethical alliance formed for the sake of power,” he said.

These people from Delhi never spared any tactics to weaken us. Mushrooming of some individual-based parties from every street of Kashmir is only aimed to divide our voice. The Centre has, time and again, tried to weaken our voice. We were divided and they succeeded in fulfilling their plot. Our voice weakened and they snatched from us our identity,” he said. He was also supported by other opposition leaders including DMK’s Tiruchi Siva. However, it was not allowed following which most of the opposition members walked out of the upper house. Initiating the debate, D P Vats of the BJP praised the government’s performance in tackling corruption and said India’s world ranking has also improved in this regard. He said that the gover nment’s proposal for extension of tenure is for stability and proper regulation. Across the world, the tenures of chiefs of such agencies are also quite long, he contended.

SRINAGAR, DEC 14 (AGENCIES): The Jammu and Kashmir National Conference Vice President Omar Abdullah on Tuesday (December 14) said that peace in Kashmir remains as elusive as ever with the footprints of security personnel increasing and new security bunkers being constructed across Srinagar. While addressing a workers’ convention at the district headquarters of the party in central Kashmir’s Ganderbal district he said, “Post abrogation of Article 370, we were told that peace will return to J&K. However, the situation on the ground completely belies that claim. In the last 24 hours, we witnessed an encounter in Rangreth, an ambush on J&K police personnel which resulted in the unfortunate killing of three policemen and injuries to scores.” He said that the incumbent administration has failed to give a sense of security to the people. “Let alone pulling up the projected dawn of development, employment extravaganza and investment, the GoI has failed to give a sense of security to our people,” he said. Praising party President Farooq Abdullah for
suspension of 12 members. Earlier, the Minister of State of Parliamentary Affairs V Muraleedharan proposed for a joint debate on The Delhi Special Police Establishment (Amendment) Bill, 2021 and The Central Vigilance Commission (Amendment) Bill, 2021. “We may combine the two and have a discussion together,” Muraleedharan. However, it was opposed by several members following which Rajya Sabha Deputy Chairman Harivansh Narayan Singh decided to take them separately. Days before the winter session of Parliament, the government had last month issued two ordinances extending the tenures of the chief of the CBI and ED and has now brought bills to replace them.

Real GDP in the second quarter of FY202122 has grown by 8.4 per cent YoY, recovering more than 100 per cent of the pre-pandemic output in the corresponding quarter of FY2019-20, said the monthly Economic Review prepared by the Finance Ministry. “India is among the few countries that have recorded four consecutive quarters of growth amid Covid-19 (Q3, Q4 of FY21 and Q1, Q2 of FY22) reflecting the resilience of the Indian economy. The recovery was driven by a revival in services, full-recovery in manufacturing and sustained growth in agriculture sectors,” it said. The recovery suggests kick-starting of the investment cycle, supported by surging vaccination coverage and efficient economic management activating the macro and micro drivers of growth, the report said.

Data released on Monday showed, retail inflation based on Consumer Price Index (Combined) rose to three months high of 4.91 per cent in November, from 4.48 per cent a month ago, as food prices inched up. The Consumer Price Index (CPI) based inflation, however, remained within the comfort zone of the Reserve Bank of India. The government has mandated the central bank to keep inflation at 4 per cent (+/- 2 per cent). The Monetary Policy Committee in its recent assessment retained its retail inflation forecast at 5.3 per cent for the current fiscal. RBI Governor Shaktikanta Das last week while unveiling bi-monthly monetary policy review said the headline inflation would peak in the fourth quarter of the current fiscal.

Terming the spike in the WPI inflation to a high of 14.2 per cent as a shock, ICRA Chief Economist Aditi Nayar said most noncore categories have exhibited an inflation rate much steeper than expected. The unseasonal surge in vegetable prices, as well as a rise in the inflation for egg, meat and fish, and condiments and spices underpinned the turnaround in the primary food inflation to a 13-month high of 4.9 per cent in November 2021, from a disinflation of 1.7 per cent in the previous month, she said. The 2030 Roadmap for stronger UK-India strategic ties was signed by Johnson and Prime Minister Narendra Modi during a virtual summit in May this year. “With our shared culture of innovation and our entrepreneurial spirit, the UK and India are natural partners. and telecom to the UK startups who are working with India giants,” the prime minister said. “Working side-byside, we will not only make breakthroughs that will transform people’s lives, but we’ll help shape a new technology based on the principles of freedom, openness and peace,” Johnson said in his special address to the 6th annual Global Technology Summit. The summit was cohosted by the non-governmental organisation Carnegie India along with the Ministry of External Affairs on the theme of Global Meets Local.
“We know that a huge advantage awaits us with Artificial Intelligence and quantum computing and with technology poised to help us find answers to some of humanity’s biggest challenges. “That’s why I was so pleased earlier this year when my friend Prime Minister Narendra Modi and I agreed that our two countries should work closer than ever before on technology and the roles that will help us shape the coming age,” the British prime minister said. Addressing the summit via video link, UK foreign secretary Liz Truss said that hostile forces use
technology to gain the upper hand. “That’s why freedomloving democracies need to step-up to shape global technologies and champion our interest,” she said. Truss also said that India and the UK are natural partners. “Every time I visit India or meet Indian businesses, I am reminded of what natural partners we are. We’re open to the world as outward looking nations, which is why the UK is India’s 2nd largest investment destination,” she said. Across Britain, Indian giants from Infosys to Tata are growing their businesses. Meanwhile British brands are selling India high-quality goods and services like fintech, clean technologies, she said. “Such openness to business and opportunity is why we are able to tackle the greatest challenges of our time. For example, we saw the peak of the pandemic… teamed up with our NHS to create a tele-medicine trial system. It was a bold step, we saved
hundreds of lives,” Truss said. “Our openness to enterprises and tech businesses are flourishing that are based in our nations,” she said. The UK is home to the third largest tech unicorns in the world while India has the third largest number of tech firms, according to Truss. “By harnessing the full potential of free enterprise and technology, we drive forward economic recovery and human progress,” she added. Johnson’s remarks at the summit came over a month after he met Prime Minister Modi in Glasgow on the sidelines of the COP26 climate summit and discussed ways to enhance bilateral cooperation in areas like green hydrogen, renewables and clean technology, economy and defence. That was the first inperson meeting between Modi and Johnson following the British Prime Minister’s twice cancelled visit to India earlier this year due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Indonesian quake rattles residents but only one hurt and minor damage J A K A RT A , D E C 1 4 (AGENCIES): A powerful 7.4-magnitude earthquake struck eastern Indonesia on Tuesday triggering a tsunami warning and sending residents fleeing from their homes but causing only minor damage and injuring one person, authorities said. The tsunami warning was lifted about two hours after the quake struck at 0320 GMT in the Flores Sea, about 112 km (70 miles) northwest of the town of Larantuka, in the eastern part of Flores island. “Everyone ran out into the street,” Agustinus Florianus, a resident of Maumere town on Flores, told Reuters. Maumere was badly damaged by a quake of a similar magnitude in 1992. Tsunami war nings were issued for the areas of Maluku, East Nusa Tenggara, West Nusa Tenggara and Southeast and South Sulawesi. The U.S. Geological Survey said the quake, had a magnitude of 7.3. It struck at the shallow depth of 12 km. “It felt like a wave, up and down,” Zacharias Gen-

tana Keranz, a resident of Larantuka told Reuters. The disaster mitigation agency said one person was injured in Manggarai, on Flores, and a school building and several homes were damaged on Selayar island, in South Sulawesi. The quake, from an active fault in the Flores Sea, was followed by at least 15 aftershocks with the biggest registering magnitude 5.6, the meteorological agency said. But the quake caused no significant increase in sea levels. Indonesian earthquakes have triggered many deadly tsunamis, most notably in 2004 when a 9.1 mag-
nitude quake off Sumatra island in the north produced tsunami waves that killed more than 230,000 people in Indonesia, Sri Lanka, India, Thailand and nine other countries. The U.S-based Pacific Tsunami Warning Center had earlier warned that based on preliminary earthquake parameters, hazardous tsunami waves were possible for coasts located within 1,000 km (621.37 miles) of the earthquake’s epicentre. in what officials described as the first step toward restoring pre-pandemic normalcy. In allowing larger gatherings, longer indoor dining hours and fully reopening schools, officials had predicted that improving vaccination rates will suppress hospitalisations and deaths even if the virus continues to spread. But there has been a surge in hospital admissions among people in their 60s or older, who weren’t fully vaccinated or whose immunities have waned after being inoculated in February. Even as infections grew this month, the government has been hesitant in reimposing stronger restrictions, citing public fatigue, and even President Moon Jae-in had declared that the country will not “retreat to the past.” Officials waited until last week to modestly sharpen social distancing, banning private gatherings of seven or more people in the greater capital region and requiring adults to verify their vaccination status to use restaurants and other indoor venues.

istration of booster shots by shortening the interval between second and third shots from four or five months to three months starting this week. As of Tuesday, more than 81 per cent in a population of more than 51 million were fully vaccinated, but only 13 per cent were administered booster shots. Officials may decide to further strengthen restrictions this week, depending on the numbers of infections and hospitalisation, Park said during a briefing. Exper ts say South Korea’s devastating surge underscores the risk of putting economic concerns before public health when the highly contagious delta variant has reduced the effectiveness of vaccines and most people are still waiting for their booster shots. The country reported around 6,000 new cases a day last week, including three consecutive days of over 7,000. MANILA, DEC 14 (IANS): Outgoing Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte on Tuesday formally dropped out of the Senate race in the May 2022 elections. Duterte, 76, went to the Commission on Elections to formally withdraw his candidacy for a Senate seat, reports Xinhua news agency. Local media reported that Duterte signed the statement of withdrawal from the race. A spokesperson for the poll body also released a picture of the President when he filed the certificate of withdrawal. The presidential office is yet to issue an official statement. Duterte filed his certificate of candidacy on November 15, the last day for making candidate substitutions. The outgoing leader’s withdrawal came just a few hours after his long-time aide, Senator Christopher Go formally notified the poll body that he was dropping out of the race for the May 2022 presidential election. Go was elected Senator in 2019. In October, Duterte said that he was retiring from politics and will not run in next May’s elections. The Philippine constitution only permits Presidents to serve a single sixyear term. Duterte was elected President in 2016, and his term ends on June 30, 2022.

SEOUL, DEC 14 (AP): South Korea on Tuesday marked its deadliest day of the pandemic as an unrelenting, delta-driven spread stretched thin hospitals and left people dying while waiting for beds. Health experts warn that the country’s medical system is quickly approaching its limits and that fatalities could worsen if the government continues to be slow and hesitant in tightening social distancing. The Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency said Tuesday that 94 virus patients died in the past 24 hours while a record 906 were in serious or critical condition. The 5,567 new infections were the highest yet — daily tallies are usually smaller at the start of the week because of fewer tests on weekends – indicating the virus has continued to gain speed after the government moderately tightened social distancing last week. Park Hyang, a senior Health Ministry official, said medical resources are quickly running out in densely populated capital Seoul and nearby metropolitan areas, where around 86 per cent of intensive care units designated for COVID-19 treatment were already occupied and more than 800 patients were still waiting to be admitted. The KDCA said at least 17 patients died last week at home or at facilities while waiting for beds. Officials have been squeezing hospitals to set aside more beds for COVID-19 patients and scrambling to speed up the admin-

When You Think You’re Hungry You might really be thirsty. Most people don’t realize they’re actually thirsty when hunger seems to strike. The brain recognizes these triggers as the same. So before you hit the pantry, drink some water first. Then give it a few minutes to see if it satisfies the urge to eat. When You Wake Up First thing in the morning is one of the best times to hydrate. Your body has gone through a long fast. For a simple jump start, squirt half a lemon in your first glass of a.m. water for a bright boost of antioxidant phytonutrients, vitamin C, and potassium. Whenever You Sweat Anything that makes you sweat -- a sauna or a hot tub, time outside on a hot, muggy day -- will cause your body to lose fluid. Ditto with exercise. As your muscles warm up, your body perspires to cast off heat. You’ll need to cool down with lots of water. Before, During, and After Exercise You need lots of water to replace what you sweat out. How much? Before you work out or spend time outside, fill up your bottle with 16 to 20 ounces of H2O. Drink 6 to 12 ounces about every

Talking about the highly anticipated awards, event host Salman Khan said, “I have always enjoyed being a part of the IIFA Family and travelling to some great destinations but this year I am super happy that we are headed to one of my personal favorites, Yas Island, Abu Dhabi.” Salman continued, “IIFA is always a memorable time and this year it will be an even bigger celebration as we celebrate the 75th year of India’s
independence and UAE’s 50th Anniversary-Golden Jubilee celebration.” “Over the last 21 years, IIFA has not only given Indian cinema an international platform, but it has created a wonderful opportunity to take us to our fans and connect millions of people globally. I am proud and excited to get ready to host the 2022 IIFA Weekend & Awards Yas Island, Abu Dhabi as we unite the world through cinema & celebration”, he added. Saood Abdulaziz Al
Best Times to Drink Water
10-15 minutes while you’re active. Afterward, drink up again -- another 16 to 24 ounces. When You’re Sick Hydration is key to healing when you’re sick. Symptoms such as diarrhea, vomiting, and fever can cause extreme water loss. At the first sign of illness, drink lots of water, especially if you’re not hungry. Stay away from alcohol and caffeinated drinks. They’ll dry out your system even more. When You’re on a Plane Ever wonder why you get so parched and thirsty when you fly? It’s all about
altitude. The higher the plane goes, the drier the cabin air becomes -- and around half the air in your cabin flows in from outside. To combat the superlow humidity level, carry on an empty water bottle to fill up as needed during your flight. When You Get a Massage Your massage therapist will thank you if you drink water before you hit the table. Your muscles will be softer and more supple, which makes it easier for them to manipulate the tender tissue. This body work releases substances you should flush out after-
ward with plenty of water, too. This is extra important if you have a deep tissue or other heavy-duty massage. Before Your Period You can ease premenstrual discomfort and reduce bloating by drinking lots of water before your period, as well as during. One of the biggest causes of cramps or headaches is dehydration. A recent study of young women with dysmenorrhea -- very painful menstruation -- found that drinking more water shortened their cycles, eased pelvic pain, and lessened their need for pain relief. When You’re in a Midday Slump It’s midafternoon and your energy has left the building. Don’t start a new pot of coffee, though. Instead, have a tall glass of water -- maybe sparkling to add some pizzazz -- with lemon or other flavoring to bump up your mood. Your hydration state directly affects your mood, memory, and visual perception, the British Journal of Nutrition reports. When You Have a Headache One of the top migraine triggers is dehydration. Some people report that even a slight dip in fluid intake can bring on an intense headache. It also can make you feel fuzzy, and in some cases even require medical treat-
ment. Especially if you’re migraine-prone, keep a water bottle handy at all times and track your intake. If you feel a twinge coming on, a glass can save your day. Before Eating a Meal Drinking water before a meal -- aka “preloading” -- might help you lose weight. A small study tested people who drank 500 milliliters -- that’s a little over 16 ounces -- of tap or bottled water about 30 minutes before mealtimes and throughout the day as they wished. Over 12 weeks, the preloaders lost almost 3 pounds more than those who didn’t fol-
low the protocol. When You Want to Lose Weight Water is more than a calorie-free way to help yourself feel full. It may also rev up your metabolism. In one study, 50 girls with extra weight drank about 2 cups of water half an hour before breakfast, lunch, and dinner with no other changes in their diet. After 8 weeks, they lost weight and lowered their body mass index and body composition scores. Water also speeds up lipolysis, your body’s process of burning fat for energy. ACT Hockey: India held to 2-2 draw by Korea
DHAKA, DEC 14 (PTI): Defending champions and Olympic bronze-medallists India were held to a 2-2 draw by a fighting Korea in their opening match of the Hero Asian Champions Trophy men’s hockey tournament here on Tuesday. Playing their first tournament after the historic Tokyo Olympics campaign, India started brightly and scored in the fourth minute through Lalit Upadhyay before vice-captain Harmanpreet Singh converted a penalty corner in the 18th minute to double their lead. Trailing 0-2, Korea fought back after the change of ends and scored through Jonghyun Jang in the 41st minute and Sunghyun Kim in the 46th minute to stun the favourites and draw level. Korea grew in confidence as the match progressed and pressed the Indian defence hard. The Manpreet Singhled side also had numerous chances, including penalty

corners, but failed to utilise the opportunities as the match ended in a stalemate. Jaehyeon Kim in front of the Korea goal was the difference between the two sides as he produced numerous brilliant saves to help his side steal a point from the game. The last encounter between the two sides ended in a 1-1 draw in the last edition
of the tournament. India will next play hosts Bangladesh on Wednesday. It did not take long for India to surge ahead through Lalit, who elegantly controlled the ball just outside the circle and dodged past three Korean defenders to slot it into the net past Kim. While the Indians played their natural game of attacking hockey from the
onset, the Koreans preferred to sit back and defend deep and rely mostly on counterattacks. India continued their dominance in the second quarter and secured back-toback penalty corners. While the first effort from Varun Kumar was brilliantly saved by Korean goalkeeper Kim, Harmanpreet beautifully converted
the next attempt to double India’s lead in the 18th minute. Down by two goals, the Koreans tried to force their way back into the game in the remaining minutes of the second quarter but India defended doggedly. But the picture was completely different after cross-over as Korea looked more purposeful in their attacks and secured three consecutive penalty corners in the 41st minute and Jang was bang on target with the last try. Minutes later, Gursahibjit Singh’s shot from top of the circle was wide off the target. The Koreans continued to put pressure on the Indian defence in search of the equaliser and they succeeded in their efforts when Sunghyun Kim tapped in a drive at the near post from a drive from the left flank. A shocked India had their chances in the form of three more penalty corners but they failed to cash in on the opportunities to split point with Korea.

Badminton Worlds: Sindhu starts with ISL: Stewart hat-trick scripts Jamshedpur win facile win; Lakshya, Srikanth too progress
VASCO, DEC 14 (PTI): Greg Stewart produced a spectacular first-half hattrick as Jamshedpur FC breezed past Odisha FC 4-0 to climb to the second place in the points table of the Indian Super League, here on Tuesday. Stewart scored three very different yet stunning goals in the 4th, 21st and 35th minutes after Peter Hartley’s strike gave the lead in the third minute. The result means Jamshedpur leapfrogged from fifth to second in the points table with 11 points from six games. Odisha are in fourth position having nine points from five games. Odisha were rocked inside the first four minutes. Hartley turned in a delightful Stewart corner into the right bottom corner, out jumping Vinit Rai after winning the flag-kick himself. One minute later, Stewart made it 2-0 pouncing on a mistake from
defenders and fired past the keeper at the far post. The only downside in a perfect half for Owen Coyle’s men was the injury to Alexandre Lima who beat a charging defender to shoot straight at the keeper but injured himself in the process. The second half could not match up to the sizzling first period as Odisha players tried to create chances and open their goal account and narrow down the margin. The Kiko Ramirezcoached side rang in the change bringing the likes of Nikhil Raj and Liridon Krasniqi to change their fortunes but in the end, it proved to be a horror Aridai Cabrera Suarez (R) of Odisha FC and Len Doungel of Jamshedpur FC in action night for them and one that found them wanting in during the ISL football match at the Tilak Maidan Stadium, in Goa, Tuesday. Repiska tried to make a comeback with two points, but the fancied Indian did not let her go ahead, leading 11-4 at the mid-break. She continued her dominance and kept accumulating points to widen the lead, eventually pocketing the first game in only
10 minutes. The script remained the same in the second game as well, with Sindhu maintaining her firm grip over the proceedings to race to a 6-0 lead in just two minutes. At midpoint, Sindhu was leading 11-1 and she completed the for mality with a dominant performance. Kohli to miss India start SAFF U-19 Women’s C’ship with win Premier League has record 42 Virat South Africa ODI positive COVID cases in past week series: Report L O N D O N, D E C 1 4 (AGENCIES): The Premier League found a record 42 cases of COVID-19 among players and staff at various clubs over the past week, it said on Monday just hours after Manchester United’s fixture against Brentford was thrown into doubt due to an outbreak at the club. The 42 positive tests from over 3,800 individuals is more than the tally from the previous seven weeks combined and a record in the English top flight in a single week. “The League has reverted to its Emergency Measures, and will increase the frequency of both Lateral Flow and PCR COVID-19 testing of players and staff,” it said in a statement. United said they had closed down their training complex following positive COVID-19 tests in the first team. United are scheduled to play at Brentford on Tuesday but the club said they had approached the Premier League to discuss whether the match should
go ahead. The Old Trafford club did not say how many individuals had tested positive for the novel coronavirus. “ I n d iv i d u a l s w h o tested positive are isolating per Premier League protocols,” the club said in a statement. “Given cancellation of training and disruption to the squad, and with the health of players and staff the priority, the club is in discussion with the Premier League whether it is safe for Tuesday’s fixture against Brentford to continue. “Team and staff travel to London will be deferred pending the result of that
discussion.” Aston Villa manager Steven Gerrard and Brighton & Hove Albion coach Graham Potter also said they had players who had tested positive for COVID-19. “We re-tested this morning and we have got a couple of staff and a couple of players missing for the foreseeable future,” Gerrard said. Potter said Brighton had “three or four” cases. “Now we’re just checking and making sure it’s at that number.” Last week Tottenham Hotspur had two matches called off due to a COVID-19 outbreak at the club affecting players and staff -- their final Europa Conference League group game against Rennes and the weekend’s league trip to Brighton. While the Brighton game has been postponed, UEFA said the Conference League tie will not be played due to a lack of available days on the calendar, with Spurs risking an exit from the competition if they are forced to forfeit.
NEW DELHI, DEC 14 (IANS): India’s star batter Virat Kohli may skip the forthcoming ODI series against South Africa, report said. While injured Rohit Sharma will miss the Tests in South Africa, the ODIs after that will see Kohli being unavailable for the Indian team. It is learnt that Kohli has already informed the BCCI about his decision. India and South Africa will play three ODIs after the Test series. As per a TOI report, “Kohli is going to miss the ODIs as he is taking time off to celebrate his daughter Vamika’s first birthday. Vamika was born on January 11 last year and Kohli is planning a holiday with his family after the conclusion of the Test series.” Last year, when Vamika was born, Kohli had gone on paternity leave after the first Test in Australia in Adelaide. India had lost that game before the stand-in captain Ajinkya Rahane led the side to a historic series win against Australia. The final Test of the tour will be begin on January 11 with the ODIs set to commence from 19.
DHAKA, DEC 14 (IANS): The India U-19 women’s team got off to a flying start in the SAFF U-19 Women’s Championship here, crushing Sri Lanka by 5-0 to log their first points in the tournament. Nitu Linda scored two goals for the Alex Ambrose-coached outfit, while Santosh, Karen Estrocio, and Priyanka Devi netted one each to complete the rout for India in a late Monday evening game. India started off on the front foot right from the start, and got the lead in the second minute itself when Santosh put it in the net. The midfielder had gotten off a shot that was saved by Sri Lanka keeper TJN Dewage. However, Santosh managed to latch on to the rebound and smashed it into the net. Karen Estrocio doubled the lead three minutes later when she nodded the ball into an empty net after it came over the goalkeeper in her direction. Karen and Anju NA combined well on the left flank to create another chance that was blocked. However, the stray balls kept falling at Indian feet before being blocked again

and again before Nitu Linda finally jinked past her marker to slot it in. With a three-goal lead, the Indian girls settled nicely into the match, keeping long bouts of possession and looking for opportunities to pry the Sri Lankan defence open. Nitu and Karen came close on a couple of occasions but it was the former who got the fourth goal in the 41st minute after she produced a shot from outside the box that trickled
into the bottom corner, past the keeper’s gloves. India picked up from where they left off in the second half, and captain Shilky soon had a direct free kick thwarted by the keeper, before Karen’s shot off the rebound was parried away. Lynda Kom Ser to came close to scoring the fifth goal for India in the 76th minute after a wellworked move that saw the midfielder’s shot bounce back off the post. Five min-
utes later, Nitu Linda was also denied by the woodwork when her header thudded off the inside of the post. However, a minute later, substitute Priyanka Devi powered a shot from outside the box, to hand India the fifth and final goal. captaincy after disciplinary breach
L O N D O N, D E C 1 4 (IANS): Premier League club Arsenal on Tuesday stripped Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang of the team captaincy following his latest disciplinary breach. The striker, who was dropped for Saturday’s 3-0 Premier League win over Southampton, will not be considered for Wednesday’s game against West Ham. “We expect all our players, particularly our captain, to work to the rules and standards we have all set and agreed,” Arsenal said in a statement. “We are fully focused on tomorrow’s match,” it added. Earlier, Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta had said in an interview that the decision to leave out the striker was “unfortunately due to a disciplinary breach”. However, he had not disclosed how Aubameyang broke the rules, but The Athletic reported that the footballer returned late from an authorised trip abroad. “We have been very consistent, that we have certain non-negotiables in

the team that we have set ourselves as a club,” said Arteta after the Southampton match.Whatever happens in the dressing room, I cannot share. From my side, I will never say what the breach was,’’ the manager had said. Notably, it is not the first time Arteta has dropped Aubameyang for disciplinary reasons. In March, the Gabon international also missed the win over rivals Tottenham for a “breach of
pre-match protocol”. The 32-year old Aubameyang took over as Arsenal captain in November 2019 after midfielder Granit Xhaka was relieved of the job by then boss Unai Emery. Aubameyang, who joined Arsenal from German side Borussia Dortmund in January 2018, has just four goals in 14 Premier League games this season, with the last coming in October against Aston Villa.
