Shops, customers urged to follow Covid SOPs DIMAPUR, JAN 14 (NPN): Dimapur District Chamber of Commerce & Industry (DCCI) has directed all shops and business establishments within DCCI jurisdiction to once again adopt strict Covid-19 protocols, including compulsory wearing of masks by all shopkeepers and salespersons inside their shops and also to keep hand sanitizers on the counter or outside the shop. Extend-

ing New Year wishes to all citizens of Dimapur, DCCI however noted with concern that the rate of Covid-19 positive cases in Dimapur had shown a steady rise in the past few days, which required a collective effort to ensure the situation did not spiral out of control. The business body also appealed to unions, organisations and individuals not to undertake any kind of fund drive from the businesses community by selling calendars or souvenirs or through other forms of donation as these activities would not be entertained. DCCI also urged various Naga national political groups to desist from random checking and raids of

godowns and shops on the pretext of searching expired goods or maximum retail price (MRP). Pointing out that there were certain norms and procedures regarding expired or damaged goods and items as clarified on earlier occasions, he explained that traders and shopkeepers have to store expired or damaged goods in godowns in order to get refund for such goods from companies. Only after due process, these goods were either returned to the respective company or destroyed later, DCCI added. DCCI assured that punitive action would be taken against any trader or shopkeeper selling expired or damaged goods.

Gene that increases risk of dying from Covid identified MDGBA opposes NGBF tenure extension NEW DELHI, JAN 14 (AGENCIES): Polish scientists have discovered a gene that they say more than doubles the risk of falling severely ill with, or even dying from Covid-19. According to Bloomberg report, the Health Ministry in Warsaw expects the discovery to help identify people who are most at risk from the disease, which has already killed more than 100,000 people in Poland alone. It also plans to include genetic tests when it screens patients for potential Covid-19 infections as soon as the end of June.

The research from the Medical University of Bialystok estimates that the gene could be present in about 14% of the Polish population, compared with around 9% in Europe and 27% in India. It’s the fourth most important factor determining

the severity of the illness after age, weight and gender, it said. A genetic test “may help to better identify people who, in the event of an infection, may be at risk of an acute disease, even before the infection develops,” said Marcin Moniuszko, a professor in charge of the study, which was carried out with the participation of almost 1,500 Poles. The ministry didn’t say if the research had been peerreviewed. The discovery may explain one of the reasons-- other than vaccination hesitancy --behind the country’s high Covid-19 death toll.

WHO recommends two new drugs: Meanwhile, the World Health Organization (WHO) on Friday recommended the use of two new drugs for the treatment of Covid patients — baricitinib and casirivimab-imdevimab. The drug baricitinib (a type of drug known as a Janus kinase (JAK) inhibitor, also used to treat rheumatoid arthritis) is strongly recommended for patients with severe or critical covid-19 in combination with corticosteroids, a WHO Guideline Development Group of international experts said in the peer-reviewed journal, The BMJ.

DIMAPUR, JAN 14 (NPN): Mokokchung District GB Association (MDGBA) has strongly opposed the extension of the tenure of the office bearers of the Nagaland GB Federation (NGBF) till 2025. In a press note, MDGBA said that the decision made during the annual executive meeting of the NGBF on October 7, 2021 was completely against the NGBF constitution under Article 10 A. It also extended support to the decision of the Dimapur GB Union Sardar and All Angami GB Association, that had opposed the extension of the tenure

of the NGBF office bearers. MDGBA said that the decision of NGBF was undemocratic and unconstitutional, asserting that the NGBF executive body was not authorized to extend the tenure of the office bearers. It also pointed out that the office of the commissioner Nagaland had issue a letter informing that the GB’s corpus fund was kept on hold till NGBF resolve the issue. Therefore, MDGBA has urged NGBF to convene a general session for the best interest of the federation and resolve the pending issues at the earliest. K Y M C

Manipur polls under shadow of militant strikes

IMPHAL, JAN 13 (PTI) : Amidst a shadow cast by recent terror strikes, Manipur, the `jewel of the Northeast ‘is headed for elections to its 60-member state assembly, with the Congress attempting to wrest back power from the ruling BJP- led coalition, which seems to be falling apart with smaller coalition partners deciding to put up candidates against the saffron party. Besides law and order, the long standing demand for junking Armed Forces Special Powers Act, economic woes of the landlocked state which has hardly any industries, are expected to figure high on the agenda of the unfolding electoral battle between the two main parties with smaller local parties such as National People’s Party and the Naga People’s Front chipping in with their own demands. The Bhartiya Janata Party which managed to form a government in 2017 despite having just 21 seats compared to Congress’s 28 by joining hands with two local parties - NPP and NPF - says it is looking to win two-thirds of the seats in the elections to be held in two phases on February 27 and March 3.

CAMPAIGNS TO FOCUS ON UNEMPLOYMENT AND DEVELOPMENT

A protest at Heirok in Thobal to protest poll violence in Manipur. Ch Chidananda Vice President, Manipur Pradesh BJP told PTI, his party’s aim “is to get more than 40 seats in 60-member house” emphasizing for clarity “that is (a) BJP government . ” Indicative of the fissures within the coalition, Chidananda frankly admitted “in the hill area of ??the state (dominated by Naga tribes), the main fight will be between BJP and Naga People’s Front (current coalition partner of the BJP).” Despite differences with partners, both of whom have said they would field candidates against

BJP, the saffron par ty leader said there are about 160 party ticket claimants “including 31 MLAs or ex-MLAs of BJP” seeking nominations for 60 seats in Manipur State assembly, indicative of the popularity of his party. Analysts say dissensions within the BJP and unhappiness among the NPP and NPF partners over its harping on the Hindutva card has brought about a distance between the alliance partners and this may affect the saffron party’s chances at the hustings. H o w e v e r, P r a d i p

Phanjoubam, Manipurbased author and editor and an expert on Northeast said “though there are no pre-poll alliances… we may witness post-poll alliances in case they are needed to form a government.” The ‘grand old party’, Congress, too is beset with problems with several of its MLAs deserting the party for the ruling BJP in recent months. Five Congress legislators including the former state Congress unit chief Govindas Konthoujam joined the BJP in August last year. Another sitting Congress legislator Chaltonlien

Amo joined BJP on Sunday. Amo’s defection to the saffron fold comes in less than a week after his colleague D Korungthang left the party to join NPF. However, N Loken Singh MLA, President Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) is confident the Congress will stage a come-back. Criticizing the present BJP-led coalition government in Manipur for “corruption and financial scandal”, Singh told PTI “prices of essential commodities are sky high, so the people of Manipur are fed up of BJP-led governments in the center as well as in Manipur. ” Singh asserted the Congress will elect it’s candidate for the Chief Minister’s post at a meeting of the Congress Legislature party after the election, “but as on today we have CLP leader O Ibobi Singh (three-terms chief minister of the state). He claimed the mood of the people is changing as “the number of unemployed youth is increasing day by day ... Living conditions of poor people worsening. NE farmers up in arms against decision to allow US pork imports KO L K ATA , JA N 1 4 (PTI): Pig farmers across the northeast are up in arms over the Union government’s decision to allow import of US pork, contending it could destroy livelihoods of “lakhs” of people and deal a body blow to a success story from the region. Pig farmers in the northeast, which consumes about 70 per cent of the country’s pork production fear an uneven playing field and disruption to businesses once cheaper factory-scale US pork products are shipped into the country. United States Trade Representative Katherine Tai and Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack had recently announced that India is set to import pork and pork products for the first time, “removing a long-standing barrier to US agricultural trade”. “We will oppose this move tooth and nail, as it will hamper the livelihood of lakhs and sound the death knell for a growing sector,” the North East Progressive Pig Farmers’ Association (NEPPFA), which has over 1,000 members in its fold, said. NEPPFA president Monoj Kumar Basumatary

said the region accounts for almost 40 per cent of the country’s pig population, and produces nearly 1.3 lakh metric tonnes of pork annually. “It has to be kept in mind that the genetics and rearing process of US pigs are completely different. Allowing import of its pork products will not present a level playing field for us. “The central government should have, instead, focused on improving breeding and the quality of feed for pigs, and boosting credit availability for farmers back home,” Basumatary told PTI. The Assam-based pig farmer said the decision will lead to more losses for small and commercial farmers, who have been smarting under the detrimental impact of Covid lockdowns and the outbreak of the African Swine Fever. Assam rears 2.1 million pigs out of India’s 9.06 million, according to the 2019 livestock census. Other northeast states with sizable pig populations include Meghalaya and Nagaland. India also exports processed poultry products to a number of South East Asian detitanations.

Lalrinchhana will be replacing Zuali in Champai. Several transporter organisations and trade unions had urged Chief Minister Zoramthanga to transfer the deputy commissioner from the border

district, claiming that her regular interference disrupted their businesses. Among others, Kolasib deputy commissioner H Lalthangliana has been shifted to school and education department. He will

be replacing Lalrinchhana as the department director. Zuali had recently launched a crackdown on import of illegal items from Southeast Asian countries to India via Champhai.

in Manipur observed “Drivers’ Day” today. Except auto-rickshaws and short distance service taxis, other passenger service vehicles, including inter-state and inter-district

passenger service, stayed off the road. Commercial transport vehicles, including trucks transporting essential commodities along the national highways, and local trucks

and fuel tankers also suspended their service for the day. Drivers of almost all the commercial service vehicles joined in the observance of 33th “Drivers’ Day” hosted by driver unions at their

levels. The driver community in Manipur has been observing January 14 each year as Drivers’ Day since 1991 commemorating the day thousands of drivers staged

a continuous seven-day protest at Koirengei old airfield in Imphal highlighting their grievances in 1990. Also, in June 1994, Around 200 transport vehicles servicing in the state

took out a rally in Imphal city to protest against the brutal killing of one handyman named Noarem Tarun Singh of Kakching by unknown armed miscreants at Jubza in Nagaland.

Following the rally, around 1000 transport vehicles gathered at Koirengei airfield and staged a protest for nine days which strengthened the unity of the drivers of the state.

were given the SP membership at its office here. The resignation of state Labour Minister Maurya had come as a jolt to the ruling BJP in pollbound Uttar Pradesh. The developments appear to strengthen the SP’s influence among the nonYadav OBCs in the state, less than a month before the crucial elections that

Samajwadi Party president Akhilesh Yadav on Friday took a swipe at Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, saying by the “80 versus 20” assertion, he meant only 20 per cent of the population will back the BJP in the Uttar Pradesh elections, while the remaining 80 per cent will support his party. But after the arrival of Swami Prasad Maurya and others in the SP, the saffron party would lose even this 20 per cent, Yadav said in his speech after giving party membership to Maurya and others here. “Baba mukhya man-

tri (Adityanath) should engage a math teacher,” the SP president said, referring to the chief minister’s “80 vs 20” remarks. Adityanath had recently said that in the Uttar Pradesh elections, while 80 per cent supporters will be on one side, 20 per cent will be on the other, which many thought was alluding to the 20 per cent Muslim population in the state. Yadav also pooh-poohed the BJP’s claim of winning three-fourth seats in the 403-member Uttar Pradesh Assembly, saying, “they meant they will win three or four seats.”

Yogi eats at Dalit household, targets SP GORAKHPUR (UP), JAN 14 (PTI): Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath had a meal at a Dalit household here on Friday and said during the Samajwadi Party rule it was “social exploitation” and not “social justice”, whereas the BJP government was working for the development of every section of society without any discrimination. Adityanath’s visit to the Dalit family in Gorakhpur came a little before Swami Prasad Maurya, Dara Singh Chauhan and Dharam Singh Saini, who resigned from the government accusing it of being anti-Dalit, gathered at the Samajwadi Party office in Lucknow to take up its membership in the run-up to the assembly polls beginning February 10. Several BJP and Apna Dal legislators have also quit their respective parties to join the SP. He said 2.61 crore households got toilets and 1.36 crore families benefitted from the Ujjwala Yojana under the “double engine” government, referring to the BJP rule at the Centre and in the state. “Those in the grip of

dynastic politics cannot give justice to any section of society,” he added. “The SP government had committed dacoity on the rights of Dalits and the poor,” he said. Yadav was the chief minister of Uttar Pradesh from 2012 to 2017. Maurya, Chauhan and Saini as well as almost all rebel MLAs had cited the state government of not caring for the welfare of Dalits and the backward classes as prime reasons for leaving the saffron camp. Assembly polls in Uttar Pradesh will be held in seven phases beginning February 10 and the results will be announced on March 10.

The Channi-government has been under attack especially from the Aam Aadmi Party over the issues of schools. AAP leader and Delhi education minister Manish Sisodia had last month visited two government primary schools located in Chamkaur Sahib, alleging their pathetic condition.

PANAJI, JAN 14 (PTI): The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which currently rules Goa, has decided to contest 38 out of the total 40 Assembly seats in the state, where elections will be held next month, a senior party functionary said on Friday. Talking to PTI, the office-bearer said that in two constituencies - Benaulim and Nuvem - the party will not field any candidate on its symbol. Traditionally, people in Benaulim and Nuvem constituencies vote for nonBJP candidates. These two are Christian-dominated seats. Currently, Benaulim is represented by Churchill Alemao, who after getting elected on the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) ticket, shifted to the Mamata Banerjee-led Trin-

amool Congress (TMC) last month, while Nuvem constituency is represented by Wilfred D’Sa, who had won the last election as a Congress candidate, but later joined the ruling BJP. “A formal announcement about the candidates would be made after January 16 when the party’s parliamentary board approves the list,” he said. The BJP has been holding meetings of its core committee to finalise the names of the candidates. Former Maharashtra chief minister Devendra Fadanavis, who is the party’s in-charge for Goa elections, has been chairing meetings attended by BJP’s state unit president Sadanand Shet Tanavade, Chief Minister Pramod Sawant, among others.

Expression of Interest (EoI) for ToT of DRDO Developed "Granules for Bio-Degradable Bags" Polythene bags/bottles have become persistent threats to environment. The pollution caused by all pervasive polythene based packing material is having inadvertent impact on nature. Plastics and polyethylene takes about 200-300 years to decompose on its own. The efforts to recycle plastic by collection and segregation are tedious and costly. Keeping in view of ill effects of pervasive usage of plastics and polyethylene bags, various options are being researched to replace these hazardous materials. In such efforts, DRDO scientists have developed Granules for bio-degradable bags to replace single use polyethylene bags. The single use bags is based on a formulation developed using PBAT starch and food graded additives. The salient features of the Technology/product are:• A alternate to conventional single use plastic. • Eco friendly, Bio-degradable and Home compostable. • No harm to animals/ aquatic life by disposal/ consumption. • Bio-degradable within 60 days. • Home compostable in 90 days. • Fully tested and certified. • Printable in multiple colors based on user requirement. • Cost effective. OPINION/EDITORIAL

Nagaland Post

Post-mortem

VOL. XXXII NO. 39 DIMAPUR, SATURDAY, JANUARY 15, 2022

Justice beyond probes

B

y all accounts, the horrific killings at Oting-Tiru on December 4,2021 merits being termed as the ‘Oting Massacre’ the most shocking incident when a total of 13 innocent civilians were gunned down in cold blood without any rhyme or reason by a command unit of the 21 Paras(Special Forces). This unit is based in Jorhat( an area under the 4 Corps) and was used to set up an ambush in Otring-Tiru area ( an area under the 3 Corps) on December 4. The victims were working as labourers in coal mines at Tiru(Mon). The Oting Massacre comes as the worst infamy after many similar incidents that blotted Nagaland during the dark ages during the 50s to 60s. The lives of a total of 13 innocent and helpless civilians were snuffed out just as their families were preparing to celebrate Christmas in 2021. The state government instituted a Special Investigation Team(SIT) under the supervision of an ADG and headed by an IGP along with four other senior police officers. Later the SIT was increased by co-opting more officers and presently, has a total of 21 members. The SIT was to have submitted its report to the state government within one month- i.e. by January 5,2022. The report is still incomplete, according to the Police since forensic reports from Guwahati and Hyderabad were still awaited. The Civil Society Organisations(CSOs) have accepted the explanation given by the police and so the outcome will have to wait. On the other hand, the Chief of Army Staff Gen.M.M. Naravane , on January 12 , promised that if found guilty, those involved will not be spared. He also said that the Court of Inquiry(CoI) set up by the Army to probe the Oting Massacre, headed by an officer in the rank of Major General is to submit its report “in a day or two”. This means that the CoI report should be completed by January 14 or 15. As per accounts, the Army CoI is only a preliminary procedure where it(CoI) seeks to collect evidence, both oral and material. The next level is said to be summons on the accused based on evidence collected. If the charges stick then the next level would be a Summary General Court Martial (SGCM) where the final trial and sentencing takes place. However, according to the Army Act, army courts can try personnel for all kinds of offenses, except for murder and rape of a civilian, which are primarily tried by a civilian court of law. It remains to be known if those involved in the Oting Massacre are being tried on charges of murder. If the CoI has taken as long as one month, then it is plausible that the next level of submission of evidence will also take a month or two. Finally, if the charges stick, then the final level is the SGCM and which could take much longer. Again, if the Army Act does not provide for trial of personnel accused of rape and murder, then this clause alone should allow a civil court to take over the case. It will serve the ends of justice if there is a judicial inquiry into the incident so that the entire conspiracy, if there is one, is exposed and act as future deterrent.

DailyDevotion Called By God

I heard the voice of the Lord, saying: “Whom shall I send, and who will go for Us?” Then I said, “Here am I! Send me.” —Isaiah 6:8

God did not direct His call to Isaiah— Isaiah overheard God saying, “…who will go for Us?” The call of God is not just for a select few but for everyone. Whether I hear God’s call or not depends on the condition of my ears, and exactly what I hear depends upon my spiritual attitude. “Many are called, but few are chosen” (Matthew 22:14). That is, few prove that they are the chosen ones. The chosen ones are those who have come into a relationship with God through Jesus Christ and have had their spiritual condition changed and their ears opened. Then they hear “the voice of the Lord” continually asking, “…who will go for Us?” However, God doesn’t single out someone and say, “Now, you go.” He did not force His will on Isaiah. Isaiah was in the presence of God, and he overheard the call. His response, performed in complete freedom, could only be to say, “Here am I! Send me.” Remove the thought from your mind of expecting God to come to force you or to plead with you. When our Lord called His disciples, He did it without irresistible pressure from the outside. The quiet, yet passionate, insistence of His “Follow Me” was spoken to men whose every sense was receptive (Matthew 4:19). If we will allow the Holy Spirit to bring us face to face with God, we too will hear what Isaiah heard— “the voice of the Lord.” In perfect freedom we too will say, “Here am I! Send me.”

NAGALAND POST, DIMAPUR SATURDAY, JANUARY 15, 2022

N

66 years of Naga political struggle

aga Political issue is not law and order but historical fact and human struggle. Here is the reproduction of historical document last 66 years of Naga political struggle. FEDERAL AUTHORITY OF GOVERNMENT OF NAGALAND. NAGA GOVERNMENT’ S ANNOUNCEMENT. Situation in Nagaland became terrible. Those who have not seen it with their own eyes cannot believe it. Here are the facts. During the last World War II, great battles were fought in various parts of Nagaland. And Nagas saw and knew what war is really like. War is horrible thing, but the present existing situation in Nagaland is much worse than a straight-shooting war which is internationally limited to the military combatants only. Whereas the Indian Amy consider the whole Naga population as marked Indian enemy, and they so treat the Naga people. THE PAST EIGHT YEARS For eight years, from 1947 onward, Nagas pleaded to the Government of Free India for a sweet understanding to allow Nagas to be free and Independent again as in the days before the advent of the British. Nagas really wanted India to get all the credits for Nagas becoming Independent again. It would have greatly enhanced India’ s untarnished statesmanship. Our Naga leaders also advocated and strictly followed Mahatma Gandhi’s doctrine of non-Violence. We tried our best to avoid misery, starvation and death. Yet, our complaisance and our humble pleadings to the Indian Government brought us to where we are now. The more We tried to tolerate, the worse we were treated. And Naga Government take the liberty of making it known full facts not to the Nagas alone, but particularly to the people India, and to all other people and Nations throughout Whole World. While doing so, we have the feeling that many good people will think about us in all seriousness, and some must have been praying and will continue to pray for us. With this in mind, we take great care to present the exact only and all what we stated here is true. NAGA TRADITION In keeping with our Naga tradition, it is to be explained our position that we failed to get the consent of the Government of India of today fora Sovereign State of Nagaland. Actually, the Indian Government had nothing to give us but we needed and we wanted India’s goodwill, and since it was not forth coming, except tears and blood. We established a federal Government of our own which came effect, as previously announced on March 22, 1956. This manumission came about through unusual force of unbear-

able inhuman circumstances. Nagas have been free and Independent since the beginning of time save 68 years, as British Colonial subject from 1879 to their year of evacuation in 1947 by those of our people in the historic “ Naga Hills Excluded Areas” who were conquered by the British, but not so with the free Nagas who never become a subject people. We want to forget all the past evil things the Indians did to our people during the last eight years. Yet, what are we to do? The present situation is tormenting. The whole country 1s in travail. It is too much for us to bear and just keep quiet. Our silence also, which is the best possible thing we could do and overlook the misdoings of our oppressor, is being misinterpreted as if agas are the Violators of the rules, laws, and against Indian Government in the land of our own birth place. If our Naga people have done wrong or committed anything against our own Nagas, we have to bear shame of it. But the Nagas should not be so accused, or make it appear so, for these crimes committed by the Indian Armed Forces, be the police or the military. INDIAN ARMY. The picked Indian Army moved in Nagaland to Kohima and Mokokchung divisions in the month of February last. They had been attacking our people ever since. The Indian Army also moved into the territory of Free Nagaland last year in March, 1956, the first batch already took position before the end of 1954. Fighting has been continuing ever since. INDIAN ARMY OPERATION AND ITS CONSEQUENCES Since the Indian Army started their military operations against the Nagas they already massacred many people. New order had been issued ten men to be killed in every Village. Full report from Free Nagas is being awaited. In Kohima and Mokokchung divisions alone, within a time less than three months; from the third week of March to first week of June, the Indians Army already over ran the whole country, leaving trails of blood wherever they go. They continue killing, and so far. MASSACRED BURNT DOWN 80 people of our common Villagers, and 11,700 houses and granaries containing over 4,000,000 mounds of rice (Paddy) reduced to ashes. Most of the people massacred were old men who could not or refused to run away, and many were women and children who fail to escape the mass houses being burnt down, much cash was stolen, property destroyed, looted and carried away which are valued Crores of rupees. OFFICIAL ENCOURAGMENT Long before the picked In-

dian Army were dispatched to Nagaland to fulfil their unhumanising for destruction killing to discipline and coerce the Nagas and parcel of the Indian territory, the Indian government passed a Bill to give a judicial appearance for subjugating our Naga people to be considered as Indians. Plants were made, and the situation was already prepared intolerable in the whole area of Nagaland. The Vile credit belong to the original schemes of high authorities in Shillong, Assam State, who encouraged the occupied authorities to carry out their regime of tyranny. When our Naga Women delegation went to Shillong to protest against Inhuman treatment of the Naga by the Indian authority, Assam’s Chief Minister Sri, Bishnuram Medhi laughed at their face hearing Naga Women’s shameful plight, and the cautioned him, “You are laughing but it is serious matter with us.” LOCAL OFFICERS. With the official encouragement from the higher ups, it is not surprising to see the inhuman policy shamelessly pursued by the calculated fiendish Indian Government 0fficers Stationed in Nagaland. Their set purpose aim is subjugation. They have no human feelings what so ever, men like 1. Sri. S.J.D. Carvalho, Indian Deputy Commissioners 2. Officer Sri, R. Singh, S.P. 3. Sri. B.S. Rao, S.D.O 4. Officer G. Phuken, S.I. And many others who prepares and created the situation in Nagaland and to their own design hoping for an easy conquest of our people to thrown blood-stained glory. They attacked our Villages 227 times before the beginning of this year 1956. They tortured and beaten more than 10,000 Nagas of all ages. Fires were thrown upon some tortured victims thousands of our people made crippled and many died and dying. Women were made naked and whipped publicly. Pregnant women were beaten and kick to death. Women and girls were raped as often as they can. Women’ s hair were shaved off, chili powder applied on them. Women were arrested together by hundred and herded them to camps and tied on posts and beaten detained them two and three days without giving them food or water. They were not allowed to sleep and prohibited to answer the call of nature. Whenever the starved babies cry, mothers were kicked and stepped. But things much worse than these were inflicted to our Women folks which were made known to the Indian Government more than once. Babies were thrown away from mother’s bosom. Men and Women with their babies caught and pushed down the cliffs. Beating and torture never cease in jails. Clothe are not al-

lowed and in the cold weather water is poured on the floor they sleep. Some are tied and wet cloth thrown on them, other were tied, dragged and thrown outside. House and schools were pulled down. Granaries were destroyed and pots and kitchen were smashed. Standing crops (rice) in the fields out down. Hidden stores of grains and food stuffs were searched and earth thrown in were burnt. People were forced at the point of bayonet and made to swear with their Bible or through ancient rites. THE REASON All the above and much more., our Naga people suffered from the hands of the Indian Government all because of the Reason our people stood on the inalienable human rights for Nations Independence of a Sovereign State of our own Nagaland. In spite of all these provocative tactics persistently pursued and directed against the mass population are country, our Naga people, remained passively silent and REFUSED TO GET ANGRY. Yet with all these “Naga have been accused again and again of “murder” arson, looting what not, we know that not a single Naga house was looted by Nagas. From the beginning, and over since, and ever will be. Nagas consider Nagaland as our own and Nobody else. We never treated our people badly and Naga Government is formed to protect and defend the Nagas. PULLED RIDDEN DEAD BODIES EXHIBITED When the Indian Army state pouring into Kohima town, who had been long awaited officer Sri.R. Singh S.P. Defiantly started killing Nagas and brought two ridden body of the dead to Kohima town market and, exhibited to the public on the 27th. February, 1956. The same barbarous performance were repeated on 19th and 21st March of man killed from different places. He warned the people that all the Nagas would meet the same fate (that is, if Nagas refused to accept the Indian Union). 0fficer R, Singh personally killed two Nagas who help him carry load by his command. The new tactics of brutality and dreadful terrorism, instead of frightening the Naga population, caused the whole country in spontaneous uproar to stand up The country Naturally became indignant. The Indian brutality made the Naga people ready to face any situation and Indian assault in die honourable instead of being killed wild beasts. Assam Chief Minister Sri. Bishnuram Medhi’s talk in the Assam Assembly to have no “SYMPATHY “and a “ FIRM POLICY “ to be followed and to get “through” with the Nagas produced the inevitable calamity in Nagaland and the natural sequence that was bound to rise as see now. A TRAGIC INCIDENT

We knew the Indian Amy as coming fully equipped with modern arms neither to be friend us nor for mere show of their Army to; that is what Army is for. The Massacre of our people and burning our houses and village could never have been camouflaged so long by the Indian Government had it not been for a very tragic incident happened in an insidious time, T. Sakhrie, one of the former Secretary of Naga National Council fell a victim into the hands of some assailants. The killing was exactly What authority needed to cover up the barrage of false reports they had to give. T. Sakhrie was styled as “liberal leader” and thus will concealed the technique of, the big lie. It is to be noted that certain sections of the Press in India, particularly in Assam, devoted more space in their widely circulated News Papers and publicised the killing of T. Sakhrie for a much longer time than they did for the killing of their father of the Indian Nation, Mahatma Gandhi, whose death astounded the whole world. The killing of the Naga National council for which one of the leaders refused to accept position in our present Government. “THE FIRM POLICY” The “ firm policy” of the Government of India against the Nagas took a devilish shape we never imagined in this age of “ Human rights “ century. We thought torture and kicking, men and women to death with nailed military boots were enough for any human being. But now what say in what our people have yet to bear? The Indian Army blew off baby’s head from the sling of the back of mother, and treated it as a good joke. Mother killed and her onemonth-old child was placed on the bosom suck her dead mother’s milk. Pregnant women were shoot, beaten and kicked to death. The whole company of the Indian Army seem to go about only to rape women and girls wherever they could catch them. We mention these not to defame Indians but their acts lay bare what are. Sikhs company caught one woman, age 35, and one 12-y ear old girl, who was tending cow, and the whole batch committed rape on them on 14th, May in Rukhroma village. The Indian Deputy Commissioner was reported to have said that rape was committed because the village gave food to Naga “ Gangsters”. In the month of March, one whole Bihars company raped two girls in Baimho village, 2 miles from Zunheboto. 600 Indian Amy went to burn Mangmetong village, 364 houses, and they burnt the whole village; caught two girls, age 17, and 19 years and they commited rape. experienced spatial disorientation: Bishop Mulakkal acquitted in rape case Pilot Court of Inquiry on IAF chopper crash

Nuns say they will file appeal

KOTTAYAM (KER), JAN 14 (PTI): A court in Kerala on Friday acquitted Roman Catholic Bishop Franco Mulakkal of the charges of raping a nun in a convent in the southern state, triggering emotional reactions from nuns who support the survivor, while the jubilant priest urged followers to “praise the lord and be happy”. As the prosecution failed to produce evidence against the accused, G Gopakumar, judge of the Additional District and Sessions Court I, Kottayam, acquitted the Bishop. Mulakkal, 57, was accused of raping the nun multiple times during his visit to a convent in this district between 2014 and 2016 when he was the Bishop of the Jalandhar diocese of the Roman Catholic church. The survivor is a member of

the Missionaries of Jesus, a diocesan congregation under the Jalandhar Diocese. A visibly relieved and emotional Mulakkal, who arrived in the court to hear the verdict, burst into tears, hugged his followers and lawyers, sharing his joy over the verdict. “Daivathinu Sthuthi (praise the Lord),” Mulakkal said when reporters repeatedly sought his reaction. Some of his followers were even seen crying out

of joy after hearing the acquittal of the bishop. In a brief Malayalam statement issued soon after the verdict, the Jalandhar diocese thanked those who believed in the innocence of the Bishop till date and provided him with the necessary legal assistance. A group of nuns of Kuravilangad Convent here, who have been standing with the survivor in her fight, were on the verge of tears when they said they were yet to believe such a

verdict came out from the court and they did not know what has happened. T h e s u r v ivo r a n d her supporters stay in the Kuravilangad convent in this south Kerala district. Sister Anupama, who was the face of the nun’s years-long fight for justice, said they would surely challenge the verdict in the higher court and take forward the fight of their hapless colleague. “We will continue our stay in the convent and take forward our fight till our sister gets justice. Police and prosecution showed justice to us but we did not get the expected justice from the judiciary,” the teary-eyed nun told reporters. Noted criminal lawyer B Raman Pillai, who led the Bishop’s legal team, said they have got the right to file the appeal against the verdict. “Even if they go for appeal, there is no tension as prosecution charges against the Bishop are false”, Pillai told PTI. Explaining the

factors that contributed to the verdict in his party’s favour, the lawyer said the prosecution case was very weak, investigation was very poor and statements of most of the witnesses came in favour of the accused because they were telling the truth. He claimed that the defence team could expose in the court the manipulation of a most important document by the investigation team. Investigators, lawyers and social activists who stood with the nun in her fight against Mulakkal expressed shock over the verdict, saying it was totally unexpected. Terming the verdict as “very, very unfortunate” and “unnatural’’, senior IPS officer S Harishankar, who had led the special investigation team in the rape case, said 100 per cent conviction was expected in the case and the verdict would be an “astonishment” for the entire legal system of the country.

NEW DELHI, JAN 14 (PTI): The IAF chopper crash on December 8 that killed Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) Gen Bipin Rawat and 13 others was due to an unexpected change in weather that led to spatial disorientation of the pilot, stated the preliminary findings submitted by the tri-services court of inquiry. “The tri-services court of inquiry into the Mi-17 V5 accident on December 8, 2021, has submitted its preliminary findings,” the Indian Air Force’s statement said on Friday. The court of inquiry has ruled out mechanical failure, sabotage or negligence as a cause of the accident, it said. “The accident was a result of entry into clouds due to unexpected change in weather conditions in the valley. This led to spatial disorientation of the pilot resulting in Controlled Flight into Terrain (CFIT),” it stated. According to US avia-

tion regulator FAA, CFIT is defined as an unintentional collision with terrain -- the ground, a mountain, a body of water, or an obstacle -- while an aircraft is under positive control. The IAF said that the inquiry team analysed flight data recorder and cockpit voice recorder besides questioning all available witnesses to determine the most probable cause of the accident. “Based on its (preliminary) findings, the court of inquiry has made certain recommendations which are

being reviewed,” the IAF mentioned. Gen Rawat, his wife Madhulika, his defence advisor Brigadier LS Lidder, staff officer to the Chief of Defence Staff, Lt Col Harjinder Singh and decorated pilot Group Captain Varun Singh were among 13 others killed in the crash near Coonoor in Tamil Nadu. The government is yet to appoint a new CDS. The court of inquiry into the crash was headed by Air Marshal Manavendra Singh.

JALPAIGURI/GUWAHATI, JAN 14 (PTI): Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw on Friday inspected the Bikaner-Guwahati Express train accident site in West Bengal’s Jalpaiguri district and said that there was some issue with the equipment of the locomotive. N i n e p e o p l e we r e killed and 36 injured after 12 coaches of the BikanerGuwahati Express train derailed, and some of them capsized near Domohani in Jalpaiguri district on Thursday. Vaishnaw said that the actual reason behind the ac-

He also met injured passengers at the hospital. “The issue was with the locomotive’s equipment, not with speed restrictions or tracks. There will be marks on the equipment. Only after dismantling it and studying those marks, the reason behind the accident can be ascertained,” he told reporters after inspecting the accident site. “The root cause (behind the accident) will soon come out. global challenges which may become unmanageable unless world leaders prioritize proactive collaboration and therefore the Davos Agenda will focus on driving concerted action among key global stakeholders, it added. Klaus Schwab, Founder and Executive Chairman of the World Economic Forum, said, “Everyone hopes that in 2022 the COVID-19 pandemic, and the crises that accompanied it, will finally begin to recede. But major global challenges await us, from climate change to rebuilding trust and social cohesion. “To address them, leaders will need to adopt new models, look long term, renew cooperation and act systemically. The Davos Agenda 2022 is the starting point for the dialogue needed for global cooperation in 2022.”

According to Tamgadge “Attachment to court of inquiry means they’re unavailable for any active operation as of now.” He mentioned that the SIT had examined army personnel who were part of the unit involved with the operation team that day. Asked why army personnel allegedly involved in the Oting incident accompanied the court of inquiry team that visited the site of incident, Tamgadge replied that he would not comment because that was beyond the purview of SIT. He reiterated that a senior officer has been assigned the task of coordinating and requesting forensic science laboratories (FSL) in Guwahati and Hyderabad to expedite the tests. Mentioning that police headquarters too had requested FSLs to share their report expeditiously, he however remarked that a timeline could not be fixed.

He pointed out that a second FIR was lodged at Mon police station over the December 5 incident at the district headquarters and that a separate district-level team had been constituted to investigate the offence that day. Research Chief Analytical Officer Suman Chowdhury said the double digit year-on-year print continues to reflect the inflationary pressures in the manufacturing and the services sector. The data indicates that the incremental price pressures in the primary article and the fuel segments have eased in the previous month although a fresh rise in global crude prices can make such a relief temporary. “Acuité never theless expects a further pass through of input costs in manufactured goods if demand continues to revive or additional supply chain challenges surface due to the new pandemic wave. We expect continuing supply side bottlenecks, raw material shortages and high commodity prices to hold the core inflation at high levels in the near term,” he added.

The duration of the current wave and the severity of restrictions will determine whether policy normalisation (change in stance to neutral along with hike in reverse repo rate) can commence in April 2022, or be delayed further to June 2022. “Once normalisation commences, we subsequently expect two repo rate hikes of 25 bps each, followed by a pause to reassess the durability of growth,” Nayar said. The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) is slated to announce its monetary policy on February 9. Acuité Ratings &

chemicals and chemical products, food products, textile and paper and paper products etc as compared to the corresponding month of the previous year,” the Commerce and Industry Ministry said in a statement. Inflation in manufactured items was lower at 10.62 per cent in December, against 11.92 per cent in the previous month. In fuel and power basket the rate of price rise was 32.30 per cent in December, against 39.81 per cent in November. Data released earlier this week showed, retail inflation based on Consumer Price Index (Combined) rose to 5.59 per cent in December, from 4.91 per cent a month ago as food prices inched up. Russia issues ultimatum on West

Demands US, NATO response next week on Ukraine

MOSCOW/KYIV, JAN 14 (AP): Russia on Friday strongly repeated its demand that NATO will not expand eastward, despite the rejection of that by the military alliance amid a Russian troop buildup near Ukraine. It added that it wouldn’t wait indefinitely for the Western response. Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov on Friday described Moscow’s demands that NATO will neither expand nor deploy forces to Ukraine and other ex-Soviet nations as essential for the progress of diplomatic efforts to defuse soaring tensions over Ukraine. He argued that the deployment of NATO forces and weapons near Russia’s borders poses a security challenge that must be addressed immediately. “We have run out of patience,” Lavrov said at a news conference. “The West has been driven by hubris and has exacerbated tensions in violation of its

bor but warned the West that NATO’s expansion to Ukraine and other ex-Soviet nations is a “red line” that mustn’t be crossed. Washington and its allies firmly rejected Moscow’s demand for security guarantees precluding NATO’s expansion, but Russia and the West agreed to leave the door open to possible further talks on arms control and confidencebuilding measures intended to reduce the potential for hostilities. The negotiations took place as an estimated 100,000 Russian troops with tanks and other heavy weapons are massed near Ukraine’s eastern border.

China expanding mass surveillance systems

NEW DELHI, JAN 14 (IANS): China devoted resources to expanding mass surveillance systems nationwide, in the absence of meaningful legal protections against unlawful or abusive government surveillance, the Human Rights Watch (HRW) said in its World Report 2022. Chinese companies with reported links to the government continue to draw global scrutiny for their data collection practices, the HRW report said. March 2021 marked the fifth anniversary of the landmark Anti-Domestic Violence Law, yet victims continued to face an uphill battle in seeking authorities’ protection and accountability for their abusers. In February, an article by former journalist

The U.S. and its allies urged Russia to deescalate by pulling troops back to their permanent bases, but Moscow has rebuffed the demand, saying it’s free to deploy forces on its territory wherever it deems necessary. Russian Defense Min-

istry said Friday that troops stationed in eastern Siberia and the far east region have been scrambled for movement across the country as part of snap drills to check their “readiness to perform their tasks after redeployment to a large distance.”

A huge cyberattack left a number of Ukrainian government websites temporarily unavailable on Friday, officials said. While it wasn’t immediately clear who was behind the cyberattack, the disruption came amid heightened tensions with Russia and after talks between Moscow and the West failed to yield any significant progress this week. Ukrainian Foreign Ministry spokesman Oleg Nikolenko told The Associated Press it was too soon to tell who could have been behind the attack. “But there is a long record of Russian cyber assaults against Ukraine in the past,” he said. Moscow had previously denied involvement in cyberattacks against Ukraine. The websites of the country’s Cabinet, seven ministries, the Treasury,

the National Emergency Service and the state services website, where Ukrainians’ electronic passports and vaccination certificates are stored, were temporarily unavailable Friday as a result of the hack. The websites contained a message in Ukrainian, Russian and Polish, saying that Ukrainians’ personal data has been leaked into the public domain. “Be afraid and expect the worst. This is for your past, present and future,” the message read, in part. Ukraine’s State Service of Communication and Information Protection said that no personal data has been leaked. The country’s minister for digital transformation, Mykhailo Fedorov, insisted that personal data was safe, since “the operability of the websites, not the registries,” was affected by the hack.

obligations and common sense.” Lavrov said that Russia expects Washington and NATO to provide a written response to its demands next week. Amid the tensions, Ukraine sustained a massive cyberattack Friday, which hit websites of multiple government agencies. This week’s negotiations in Geneva and a related NATO-Russia meeting in Brussels were held amid a significant Russian troop buildup near Ukraine that the West fears might be a prelude to an invasion. North Korea fires likely missile in third launch this month SEOUL, JAN 14 (AP): North Korea on Friday fired at least one possible ballistic missile in its third weapons launch this month, officials in South Korea and Japan said, in an apparent reprisal for fresh sanctions imposed by the Biden administration for its continuing test launches. South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff said the weapon was fired toward the east but did not immediately say where it landed or provided other details. Japan’s Prime Minister’s Office and the Defense Ministry also said they detected the North Korean launch and said it was possibly a ballistic missile. The Japanese coast guard issued a safety advisory, saying an object had possibly landed already. It urged vessels between the Korean Peninsula and Japan, as well as the East China Sea and the North Pacific, to “pay attention to further information and to keep clear when recognizing falling object.” The Biden administration on Wednesday imposed sanctions on five North Koreans over their roles in obtaining equipment and

technology for the North’s missile programs in its response to the North’s missile test this week. It also said it would seek new U.N. sanctions. The announcement by the Treasury Department came just hours after North Korea said leader Kim Jong Un oversaw a successful test of a hypersonic missile on Tuesday that he claimed would greatly increase the country’s nuclear “war deterrent.” Tuesday’s test was North Korea’s second demonstration of its purported hypersonic missile in a week. The country in recent months has been ramping up tests of new, potentially nuclear-capable missiles designed to overwhelm missile defense systems in the

region, as it continues to expand its military capabilities amid a freeze in diplomacy with the United States. In a statement carried by North Korea’s official Korean Central News Agency, an unidentified Foreign Ministry spokesperson defended the North’s launches of purported hypersonic missiles as a righteous exercise of self-defense. The spokesperson said the new sanctions underscore hostile U.S. intent aimed at “isolating and stifling” the North despite Washington’s repeated calls for Pyongyang to resume diplomacy that has stalled over disagreements about sanctions relief and nuclear disarmament steps.

Ethiopia accuses WHO chief Tedros of misconduct GENEVA, JAN 14 (AP): The government of Ethiopia has sent a letter to the World Health Organization, accusing its Ethiopian director-general of “misconduct” after his sharp criticism of the war and humanitarian crisis in the country. Ethiopia nominated Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus to be the head of the UN health agency four years ago, but says he has “not lived up to the integrity and professional expectations required from his office,” accusing him of interfering in Ethiopia’s internal affairs, according to a press release issued late Thursday. “Through his acts, (Tedros) spread harmful misinformation and compromised WHO’s reputation, independence and

credibility,” Ethiopia’s ministry of foreign affairs said. WHO had no immediate response to the claims. Tedros, an ethnic Tigrayan, has repeatedly deplored the situation in his home country and called for humanitarian access to the conflict-ridden region of Ethiopia. “Nowhere in the world are we witnessing hell like Tigray,” said Tedros at a media briefing Wednesday. He cited a missive WHO had received recently from a physician in the region, who said health authorities had run out of basic medicines for diseases including diabetes in June and were now using expired stocks and intravenous fluids. Tedros condemned Ethiopia’s blockade of in-

ternational access to Tigray, saying that WHO had not been allowed to send any supplies to the region since July, noting the UN agency had access to Syria and Yemen even during their worst conflicts. He said there should be “unfettered” humanitarian access to Tigray and said that “just respecting the constitutional order “would bring this problem into a peaceful conclusion.”

PM Imran Khan launches Pakistan’s first-ever National Security Policy

JERUSALEM, JAN 14 (AGENCIES): Thousands of Israeli nationalists staged a protest Thursday outside the parliament building in Jerusalem, urging the government not to demolish a West Bank settlement outpost. The demonstration came a month after a Palestinian gunman fired on a car filled with seminary students at the Homesh outpost, near the West Bank city of Nablus, killing 25-year-old Yehuda Dimentman and wounding two people. The Homesh outpost is considered illegal by the Israeli government. It is the site of a former settlement evacuated as part of Israel’s withdrawal from the

Gaza Strip in 2005. But in recent years, settlers have re-established an unauthorized outpost at the site, one of dozens of outposts in the West Bank that are considered illegal but tolerated by

the government. The protesters voiced opposition to the government’s West Bank settlement policies, shouted chants against Prime Minister Naftali Bennett and

waved Israeli flags. Bennett’s government was formed last year from a coalition of disparate parties, ranging from ultranationalists to dovish factions and a small Islamist party. The coalition has agreed not to address divisive issues, but disagreements, particularly over Israel’s 54year occupation of the West Bank, have repeatedly come to the fore. Israel captured the West Bank in the 1967 Mideast war, and in the decades since has established dozens of settlements now home to hundreds of thousands of Israelis. Most of the international community considers settlements illegal and an obstacle to peace.

The epicentre, with a depth of 37.19 km, was initially determined to be at 6.9291 degrees south latitude and 105.2513 degrees east longitude. Strong tremors were also felt in the capital Jakarta.

UN chief warns millions of Afghans are on ‘verge of death’

U N I T E D NAT I O N S, JAN 14 (AGENCIES): The United Nations chief warned Thursday that millions of Afghans are on the “verge of death,” urging the international community to fund the U.N.’s $5 billion humanitarian appeal, release Afghanistan’s frozen assets and jump-start its banking system to avert economic and social collapse. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres told reporters that “freezing temperatures and frozen assets are a lethal combination for the people of Afghanistan,” and “rules and conditions that prevent money from being used to save lives and the economy must be suspended in this K Y M C

emergency situation.” Afghanistan’s aid-dependent economy was already stumbling when the Taliban seized power in mid-August amid the chaotic departure of U.S. and NATO troops

after 20 years. The international community froze Afghanistan’s assets abroad and halted economic support, unwilling to work with the Taliban, given their reputation for brutality dur-

ing their 1996-2001 rule and refusal to educate girls and allow women to work. The U.N. says 8.7 million Afghans are on the brink of starvation and Guterres said it’s critical to rapidly inject liquidity into the Afghan economy “and avoid a meltdown that would lead to poverty, hunger and destitution for millions.” It’s “absolutely essential” to avoid a breakdown, he stressed, “because with the present situation you have Afghans on the verge of death.” The secretary-general said the United States has “a very important role to play because most of the financial system in the world

operates in dollars” and the United States has frozen $7 billion in Afghan foreign reserves, mainly held in the U.S. U.N. humanitarian chief Martin Griffiths and Peter Maurer, president of the International Committee of the Red Cross, are scheduled to hold a virtual meeting Friday with U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken. Guterres said one reason for the meeting is to try and create “mechanisms that allow for an effective injection of funds into the Afghan economy and, at the same time, create the conditions for the financial system in Afghanistan to be able to operate in the local currency.”

Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus

ISLAMABAD, JAN 14 (PTI): Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan on Friday launched the country’s first-ever National Security Policy, which articulates a citizen-centric framework, placing economic security at its core unlike the previous one-dimensional security policy where the focus was on the military. Unveiling the public version of the policy, which was separately endorsed by the National Security Committee and the Cabinet last month, Prime Minister Khan said that the previous governments had failed to strengthen Pakistan’s economy. The national security has been clearly explained in the new original 100-page document, he said, adding that the policy articulates a citizen-centric framework, placing economic security at its core and seeking a secure and economically resilient Pakistan. Khan said that Pakistan, since its evolution, has had a one-dimensional security policy where the focus was on the military. “For the first time, the National Security Division has developed a consensus document which defines national security in a proper way,” he added. The powerful army, which has ruled Pakistan for more than half of its 70 plus years of existence, has hitherto wielded considerable power in the matters of security and foreign policy. he Critics Choice Association has announced that it will hold the 2022 Critics Choice Awards ceremony on March 13, the same day as the British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) Awards, reports ‘Variety’. T h e final round of voting for this year’s Critics Choice Awards will take place on March 9-11. Steven Spielberg’s ‘West Side Story’ and Kenneth Branagh’s ‘Belfast’ dominated this year’s batch of nominees. In late December, the Critics Choice Association announced it would delay its 2022 awards ceremony because of concerns over the surge in Covid-19 cases and the Omicron variant. The event was originally set to take place on January 9. “Following the science and tracking the course of the Omicron variant, we believe that March 13 will be the right day to properly honour the finest achievements in film and television during the past year,” ‘Variety’ quoted the organisation’s CEO Joey

Berlin as saying. He added: “We could have proceeded with our original date with limited attendance or switched to a virtual awards show like we did last year, but we decided to wait until we could safely gather in person and truly celebrate with the creative c o m munity, industry leaders and our CCA members all together in one beautiful setting for all the world to see.” The reason why the Critics Choice Awards are now set to take place on the same evening as the BAFTAs is because, reports ‘Variety’, they faced an onslaught of busy Sundays for television networks and the city of Los Angeles in looking for a date to reschedule. Super Bowl LVI, the NBA All-Star Game and SAG Awards all take place on consecutive Sundays in February. Additionally, the Academy Awards is hosting its annual luncheon for nominees on March 7, while the Los Angeles marathon will take place in Century City on March 20. (IANS)

Heart Health: Time for a diet change?

M

edically Reviewed by Brunilda Nazario, MD on January 23, 2020 There’s a lot you can do to keep your heart well. Exercise done regularly is key. So are stress relief and not smoking. But many cardiologists and health experts say diet is especially important for heart health. “If I could pick one thing for people to do to reduce their risk of heart disease and heart diseaserelated death, it would be changing how they eat,” says Kim Williams Sr., MD, chief of cardiology at Rush University Medical Center in Chicago and a past president of the American College of Cardiology. Adjusting your diet may sound like a tall order. But small changes add up. “That’s especially true when you make them part of your everyday lifestyle,” says Suzanne Steinbaum, DO, a preventive cardiologist in New York and a longtime volunteer expert for the American Heart Association’s Go Red for Women movement. Here are three simple but powerful changes to make today.

Eat More Whole Foods at Every Meal

that’s rich in vegetables and healthier fat sources, like olive oil, but also allows for fatty fish, dairy, and lean protein like chicken. The American Heart Association recommends mostly eating whole fruits, vegetables, legumes (like beans and chickpeas), nuts, whole grains (think oatmeal or whole grain rice), and lean vegetable or animal protein, especially fish. These foods are high in vitamins and other nutrients, like fiber, and free of additives like sugar. “They can help lower LDL [aka “bad”] cholesterol, which is a major driver of heart disease and heart attacks,” says Sean P. Heffron, MD, a cardiologist and assistant professor of medicine at NYU Langone Health.

Skip Foods That Have Added Sugar

The good news: Whole foods are naturally free of added sugar. So if you’re loading up on them, you’re already getting less sugar than most people. It still helps to check the label of any processed food you eat for ingredients like sugar, fructose, corn syrup, and high-fructose corn

syrup, Steinbaum says. A 2014 JAMA Internal Medicine study found that people who got 25% or more of their calories from added sugar were more than twice as likely to die of heart disease, compared to those whose diets were less than 10% added sugar (by calories). Researchers aren’t sure exactly why this is. But sugar-sweetened beverages, like soda, raise blood pressure. Sugar also increases the amount of insulin your pancreas makes and can contribute to weight gain and inflammation, which make you more likely to have diabetes. And both weight gain and diabetes increase your risk of having heart disease. The American Heart Association recommends women get no more than 100 calories from added sugar a day, and men get no more than 150 calories from added sugar daily. But when it comes to sugar, “the less you eat, the better,” Steinbaum says.

Reaching a healthy weight takes stress off your cardiovascular system and reduces inflammation. But while some high-fat plans (like the keto diet) may promise fast weight loss, that doesn’t mean they’re heart-smart. In fact, every expert we interviewed for this story stressed the importance of cutting down on saturated fat (which mainly comes from animal sources like red meat, high-fat dairy, and pork, but is also in coconut oil, palm oil, and palm kernel oil). “I tell patients to ask themselves, does it walk on land? If so, try to reduce how much of it you’re eating,” Heffron says. Williams points out that multiple studies show that eating animal protein raises the risk of early death from heart attack and other causes. And he notes that those studies also show that substituting plant protein for animal protein reduces the risk of heart-related death. You may have heard coconut oil touted as a weight loss aid and health booster. But those benefits aren’t proven. Coconut oil is one of the few plant sources of saturated fat. If you choose to eat it, opt for very small amounts. Most of the time, it’s best to choose unsaturated fats, which lower cholesterol instead of raising it. These include polyunsaturated

fats, which are found in foods like fish, flaxseed, walnuts, and soybean oil. They also include monounsaturated fats, such as avocado, avocado oil, and olive oil.

Track Yourself

The quality of your food is important, but so is the quantity. Limiting your portion sizes and sticking to no more than one healthful snack between meals can keep your weight in check, Steinbaum says. That lowers your risk of heart disease and heart attack. One simple way to make sure you’re not overdoing it is to keep track of what you eat and drink. “You can use a paper journal or an app on your phone or computer,” Steinbaum says. “It’s so easy to say, ‘I don’t know why I’m gaining weight,’ or ‘I can’t remember what I ate.’ Tracking can provide answers and keep you mindful.” Not seeing the changes you’d like? Consider sharing your food journal with your doctor or a dietitian. “Knowing where you’re at can help you and your health care team figure out your next steps,” Steinbaum says. Dietitians can make sure you’re meeting all your nutritional needs, and they can give you tips on making the transition to a heart-healthy diet something you can stick with for life.

Mero defends KKTWA title; Head’s ton lifts Aus from 12-3 to 241-6 vs Eng Reka Neiche Tepfo secures U-16 title

HOBART, JAN 14 (AP): Travis Head spoiled a promising start for England in the Ashes on Friday with his second century of the series as Australia recovered from 12-3 to reach 241-6 at stumps on a rainhit first day of the fifth Test. Head, who scored 152 in the opening test at Brisbane, counterpunched England’s early success with an aggressive 101 off 113 balls in the day-night test as Australia came back strongly after losing the toss. Cameron Green contributed an authoritative 74 and Marnus Labuschagne scored a rapid 44 before rain arrived around half an hour after tea and prevented further play. Head entered with Australia in serious trouble after a brilliant spell of swing and seam bowling from Ollie Robinson (224), one of the five changes England made, and Stuart Broad (2-48) on a lively green wicket. Head, who missed the Sydney Test due to the coronavirus, first put the innings back on track with a 71-run stand with Labuschagne, but not before

Zak Crawley had dropped Labuschagne at second slip before the batter had scored. That drop proved costly for England which has already lost the Ashes after losing the first three test matches at Brisbane, Adelaide and Melbourne before the draw in Sydney. “Nice to be back and contributing,” Head told Channel 7. “I was really conscious of making the right decisions -- attacking the right balls, defending the right ones, being hard to get out. I felt like I came into this test ready to go.”

Labuschagne counterpunched the pace of Chris Woakes (1-50) and Mark Wood (1-79) by clobbering nine boundaries before getting dismissed in a bizarre fashion just before the first session. L a b u s c h a g n e wa s clean bowled in an unusual style when he appeared to slip in the crease and Broad had the middle stump knocked back with the batsman falling over on his knees while going way across his stumps. Broad troubled openers David Warner and Usman Khawaja as he bowled three successive maiden overs before Warner edged Robinson to Crawley and fell for a 22-ball duck. Khawaja, the twin century-maker in Sydney, also couldn’t negotiate the seam of Broad and edged to slip after scoring six runs before Robinson found the thick outside edge of Steve Smith (0) as Australia slipped to 12-3 in its first innings inside the first 10 overs. England’s wholesale changes included Jonny Bairstow, who sustained a thumb injury while helping England salvage a draw in Sydney, and wicketkeeper Jos Buttler (broken finger). NAGALAND POST, DIMAPUR SATURDAY, JANUARY 15, 2022

Double-fault: Visa revoked again, SA beat India by 7 wkts; win series 2-1 Novak Djokovic faces deportation CAPE TOWN, JAN 14 (PTI): A South African team going through one of its toughest transition phases embarrassed a starstudded Indian team with a clinical seven-wicket victory in the third Test to clinch a memorable 2-1 series triumph here on Friday. The target of 212 wasn’t a tough ask and starting the day at 101 for two, young pretender Keegan Petersen (82, 113 balls) along with Rassie van Der Dussen (41 not out) added 54 runs for the third wicket to seal the match before Temba Bavuma (32 not out) helped in putting the final touches. Petersen walked away with both the player of the match as well as player of the series honours. Sunil Gavaskar termed it as a “Nightmare for India” as they were not even close to competing in the last two Tests and Dean Elgar’s ear to ear grin and the bear hugs that he shared with his teammates said it all. It was especially sweet for the hosts

who lost premier pacer Anrich Nortje to injury before the series and were then hit by Quinton de Kock’s sudden mid-series retirement. The Indian team, meanwhile, lost it in their mind after the contentious DRS review of Elgar that went wrong on Thursday and their focus on using stump microphone more to take digs at broadcaster Supersport instead of focussing on getting Petersen out spelt their doom. “It’s a great spectacle of Tests for

everyone to watch; hardfought series. Great first game but SA did amazingly well. In both Tests they won, they were clinical with the ball in crunch moments,” India skipper Virat Kohli admitted after the game. With this series defeat, India’s record of never having won a Test series in the Rainbow Nation for three decades, remained intact. Mahendra Singh Dhoni is the only India captain to have managed a drawn series back in 2010. It was

one of the strongest Indian teams on paper against one of the weakest South African teams on paper. However, the operative word here was “on paper” as Elgar’s unheralded bunch showed a lot of character in punching above their weight and also getting heavily rewarded for their relentless efforts. “The way our bowling unit delivered throughout the series is brilliant. I threw down the challenge after the first game and the guys responded brilliantly,” said an elated Elgar. The mindless chatter and incessant sledging didn’t bother the likes of Petersen and Van der Dussen as they went about their job in a thoroughly professional manner. India’s batters were far too dependant on bowlers to bail them out for the past few years but this series showed that this attack is human too even though they put their best foot forward, which wasn’t complemented at all by the willow wielders. The only hope for India

was the first spell from Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Shami in sultry conditions with the semi-new ball and they did their bit with all sincerity. Petersen was beaten time and again but, in between, scored his runs to keep the scoreboard ticking. Their strategy was to see off the first spell and capitalise when Umesh Yadav, who is known to bowl boundary balls, was brought into the attack. Bumrah, in his second spell, did get one to straighten but Cheteshwar Pujara, enduring a poor series with the bat, dropped a crucial regulation slip catch with the batter on 59. If one remembers, it was Ross Taylor, who had got a ‘life’ when Pujara dropped a sitter during World Test Championship final and the bowler at the receiving was again, Bumrah. It was Shardul Thakur who finally had the young man played on but by then Petersen had ensured a series win for his team.

Novak Djokovic practices on Margaret Court Arena ahead of Australian Open in Melbourne on Jan. 13, 2022. AP/PTI

MELBOURNE, JAN 14 (AP): Novak Djokovic faces deportation again after the Australian government revoked his visa for a second time, the latest twist in the ongoing saga over whether the No 1-ranked tennis player will be allowed to compete in the Australian Open despite being unvaccinated for COVID-19. Immigration Minister Alex Hawke said Friday he used his ministerial discretion to cancel the 34-year-

old Serb’s visa on public interest grounds — just three days before play begins at the Australian Open, where Djokovic has won a record nine of his 20 Grand Slam titles. Djokovic’s lawyers were expected to appeal at the Federal Circuit and Family Court, which they already successfully did last week on procedural grounds after his visa was first canceled when he landed at a Melbourne airport.

A hearing was scheduled for Friday night. Deportation from Australia can lead to a three-year ban on returning to the country, although that may be waived, depending on the circumstances. Hawke said he cancelled the visa on “health and good order grounds, on the basis that it was in the public interest to do so.” His statement added that Prime Minister Scott Morrison’s government “is firmly committed to protecting Australia’s borders, particularly in relation to the COVID-19 pandemic.” Morrison himself welcomed Djokovic’s pending deportation. The whole episode has touched a nerve in Australia, and particularly in Victoria state, where locals went through hundreds of days of lockdowns during the worst of the pandemic and there is a vaccination rate among adults of more than 90%.

13 points from 11 games while NorthEast United remained 10th with nine points from 11 games. Nor thEast United were off to a flying start courtesy of Santana’s individual brilliance. The 31year old Spaniard curled in a delectable free-kick at the near post leaving Dheeraj Moirangthem with no chance as the ball pinged in off the crossbar. It was a frantic start to the game and just the early push Nor thEast Airam Cabrera (C) of FC Goa celebrates with teammates after scoring a goal at the United needed. Goa tried GMC Athletic Stadium, in Goa, Friday (ISL/PTI)

to settle down by playing more passes in midfield but NorthEast were not ready to rest on the slender lead as Deshorn Brown missed the target after beating two defenders. Goa relied on the excellent Jorge Ortiz to deliver the goods and the Spaniard got past Provat Lakra to send a teasing ball inside the box but Mirshad Michu was alert to avert the danger at the right time. NorthEast looked in fine touch when Brown and Suhair Vadakkepee-

dika combined for the latter to see his effort deflect off a few Goa shirts for a corner. Goa slowly started growing into the game and got the equaliser moments before the half time whistle when Cabrera nodded in a Alberto Noguera corner with no one marking him. In the second period, Goa looked the more threatening side with Ortiz and Cabrera combining brilliantly to keep NorthEast United defence on tenterhooks. There were chances

few and far between for the Highlanders and Goa could not make the most of their attacking display as they had to share the spoils in the end with their rivals. Meanwhile, with both ATK Mohun Bagan and Bengaluru FC unable to train on Thursday because they were hit by Covid-19, their game on Saturday hangs in the balance.

Malaysia’s Ng Tze Yong in the semifinals. In the other women’s semifinal, Aakarshi Kashyap will face second seeded Thai Busanan Ongbamrungphan after the Indian notched up a 21-12 21-15 win over compatriot Malvika Bansod on Friday. Busanan trounced USA’s Lauren Lam 21-12 21-8 in another last-eight clash. Second seeded men’s doubles pair of Satwiksairaj

Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty also entered the semifinals with a 21-18 21-18 win over Singapore’s Hee Yong Kai Terry and Loh Kean Hean. Haritha Manazhiyil Harinarayan and Ashna Roy also made it to the last four in women’s doubles after beating Rudrani Jaiswal and Jamaludeen Anees Kowsar 21-16 21-16 in the quarterfinals. The last time Sindhu was up against Chaliha,

at the 83rd Yonex-Sunrise Senior National Championship in 2019, the youngster from Assam had produced a spirited performance. On Friday, Chaliha took time to get into the groove and put up a good fight in the second game but couldn’t stop Sindhu from walking away with the match. Sindhu came out all guns blazing in the opening game, jumping to a 11-5 lead at the interval and then reeled off the last 10 points to earn the bragging rights. Chaliha gave a better account of herself in the second game as she tied 9-9 before Sindhu managed a slender one-point advantage at the break. Sindhu zoomed to 15-11 but Chaliha again clawed her way back to 15-15. Thereafter, Sindhu switched gears and grabbed four match points. Chaliha saved two match points before Sindhu closed out the tie.

Liverpool held by 10-man Arsenal in League Cup semi

ANFIELD (ENGLAND), JAN 14 (AGENCIES): Arsenal held out for over an hour a man down to leave their League Cup semi-final with Liverpool delicately poised after the first leg ended 0-0 at Anfield on Thursday. The Gunners looked set to pay for another moment of madness from former captain Granit Xhaka when he was sent off for chopping down Diogo Jota after just 24 minutes. However, Liverpool badly

missed the firepower of Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane as they laboured to even create chances against the 10 men. Chelsea already await the winners at Wembley next month after the first leg, originally scheduled to be played at the Emirates last week, was called off due to a coronavirus outbreak among the Liverpool squad. The Reds were missing Salah and Mane due to their international duties at the

Africa Cup of Nations. However, Liverpool otherwise had a clean bill of health and Jurgen Klopp named the strongest side available to him. The home side had the better of a cagey opening quarter with Ben White’s miscued clearance from Takumi Minamino’s cross that skewed just wide the closest either side came before the red card. Xhaka has remained a key player for Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta despite his disciplinary issues. But he will miss Sunday’s north London derby against Tottenham and the second leg next Thursday after being sent off for the second time this season. Jota was played through on goal by Andy Robertson’s pinpoint long ball and the Portuguese was brutally brought down by Xhaka’s lunge. Arteta responded by sacrificing Eddie Nketiah for an extra centre-back in Rob Holding and the visi-

tors’ back five held up well despite Liverpool dominating possession. Minamino’s mishit cross that sailed inches wide was the closest Klopp’s men came to making the breakthrough before the German turned to his bench for the final half hour. The Japanese had all of Liverpool’s best chances as he dragged his shot wide from a narrow angle midway through the second half. Moments later a rare Arsenal foray forward nearly resulted in the winner as Kieran Tierney picked out Bukayo Saka, but he could not beat Alisson Becker from close range. There was further concern for Arteta when Saka limped off in the final stages. And all his side’s good work was nearly undone at the death as Aaron Ramsdale flapped at a cross, but Minamino sliced high and wide with the goal gaping to leave it all to play for in the second leg at the Emirates on January 20.
