While seven new hospital admissions were recorded with no deaths, the department however said that hospitalizations and deaths follow only twothree weeks after increase in cases. Pointing out that vaccines were working very well against hospitalizations and deaths, it however said that effectiveness decreases over time. Therefore, H&FW has recommended 3rd dose for those at high risk-- 60 plus elderly with comorbidities and healthcare/frontline
workers after nine months of the second dose. The department also urged the unvaccinated to use the small window period before the peak of the wave. Citing data from across the globe, it said that vaccines were very effective against severe disease and hospitalization even against the Omicron variant. “The unvaccinated and those pending for second dose should use the limited time to get their vaccines,” H&FW reiterated. The department further urged all to avoid
crowded places and to compulsorily use mask (double masks, surgical, or N95 masks) while in public places and gatherings as it was critical to avoid super spreader events and avoid overwhelming the health system. State logs 59 fresh cases: Nagaland on Saturday recorded 59 fresh Covid-19 positive cases while no deaths were reported in the past 24 hours. Of the fresh cases, 51 were from Dimapur, five in Kohima, two in Peren and one Phek, taking the total
caseload to 32,834. Nearly 18k teens receive first dose of vax: Nearly 18000 teens between the 15-18 age group have received first dose of the Covid vaccine across the state. According to health department’s data, a total of 17925 received their first dose of Covaxin vaccine as on January 15. Further, a total of 13,65,587 persons have been inoculated against Covid-19-- 773771 first dose and 591816 second dose while 3806 beneficiaries (health care and frontline workers and 60 plus with comorbidities) received the ‘precautionary dose’. ADDC serves ultimatum on govt to declare Aboi district by Jan 23 DIMAPUR, JAN 15 (NPN): Aboi District Demand Committee (ADDC) has served an ultimatum on the state government to declare Aboi as district on or before January 23, 2022. Failing which, the committee warned that it would take up its own course of action. Stating this in an ultimatum served on the chief minister, ADDC convener Manpon Changkap and presidents of-Konyak Union Aboi unit Y. Pangao, KU Chen unit Pongyao Konyak and KU Longchang unit N. Chaohong Konyak therefore urged the concern authority to take the matter into serious consideration. A D D C u r ge d t h e chief minister to acknowledge the sentiments and resentment of the people of Aboi under the umbrella of Aboi District Demand Committee (ADDC), as the demand for Aboi district
HQ had been turned down by the state government. It pointed out that the demand for up-gradation of Aboi ADC HQ to district HQ was officially initiated in 2008 and was subsequently included in the cabinet memo of 2011. As the present government was well aware of the demand, ADDC said that the apex body-- Konyak Union, Mon had also submitted a representation to the state cabinet on July 19, 2021, for creation of Aboi district by bifurcating Mon district. For this, ADDC said that the No Objection Certificate (NOC) was also granted on July 21, 2008. T h e c o m m i t t e e, therefore, questioned the state government on what ground their demand was denied “despite fulfilling the criteria fit for a fullfledged district than any other districts which were declared recently.” ADDC said it was
shocked and saddened as the government chose to declare creation of three new districts on December 18, 2021, when the Konyak community was mourning and seeking for justice with regard to the recent incident of Oting massacre. It said “the government has added salt to the wounds by the declaration of other districts in the midst of our sorrowful period and also by back dropping our demand.” While reminding the chief minister that their demand had always been democratic, ADDC, however, said that it has reached its elastic limit and the public have turned impatient towards the “stone-deaf attitude of the government”. ADDC, therefore, warned that the “response/ retaliation of the citizens maybe undemocratic” and ultimately hold the government responsible for its consequences.

On the economic impact of conducting annual, biennial and triennial conferences at the village level, area/range level, district level and apex level, Kikheto expressed concern over huge expenditures to host such events He explained that these expenditures have huge impacts on parents, leaders, bureaucrats, politicians, business persons, etc. and affects the economy of the society and the people. Kikheto then urged the Naga society and the Sümi society in particular to limit these kinds of events. While explaining that most of the government
schemes are now routed through direct benefit schemes and banking, he said the state government is also seeking to approve and pass the Securitization and Reconstruction of Financial Assets and Enforcement of Security Interest Act, 2002 (SARFAESI Act, 2002) to enable young educated unemployed to avail schemes and loans etc. and become entrepreneurs for economic development and sustenance. Kikheto urged the young educated unemployed to not only strive to get government jobs alone, but to identify their own strengths and the schemes or opportunities available and suitable for them and work towards availing assistance from the government and become successful entrepreneurs.

BJP’s double engine govt failed: Mnp Cong Olympian Mirabai joins Mnp Police as ASP
Correspondent IMPHAL, JAN 15: Opposition Manipur Congress on Saturday took a dig at the ruling BJP, saying that its “double engine” government failed in Manipur. The state as well as national leaders of the BJP have been repeatedly claiming that the BJP was running a double engine government. Prime Minister Narendra Modi had on his recent visit in Manipur, made the same claim in his address after inaugurating a host of projects. “The double engine government is failing now. The BJP is running failed engines,” MPCC working president MLA K Meghachandra said, claiming that none of the promises made by the BJP-led coalition govern-
K Meghachandra ment converted into work. He said no government anywhere in the country or globe has lured people by making a host of promises and fooling them. Demanding an explanation from BJP, he said, “The BJP-led government had made a host of promises which they assured to translate into work in its five years tenure. But, the question is how many of
the promises they made have been converted into work. The Congress is asking and BJP must give the answer before the ensuing election,” He said that after the formation of a coalition government through backdoor in March 2017, the BJP-led coalition government in the state had made uncountable promises. Meghachandra pointed out that on July 20 of the same year, the state commerce and industries minister Th Bishwajit announced the government’s commitment to generate 1.5 lakh employment in its five years tenure and the Chief minister N Biren Singh reaffirmed the same later on October 6 of the same year. The five years tenure of the coalition government has completed, but,how
many jobs have been generated remains a big question mark, he added. The MLA accused the coalition government of misleaing the house of the state Assembly when it announced revival of the Loitang Khunou Spinning Mill as no work to revive the government undertaking was taken up till date. The MPCC president further said that he is still firm with his allegation of misappropriation of Rs 800 crore in the state works department which was recently refuted by the state works minister Th Bishwajit. Stating that the allegation was not made blindly, he claimed he has official documents to prove. He said that the clarification made by the works minister itself was also misleading.

Sources in the commission also indicated that they are keen to conduct the election in other municipalities at the end of February. Currently, elections in 107 municipalities and Howrah Municipal Corporation is likely to be held on February 22. Sources in the commission also indicated that the poll panel might speak to the Disaster Management Department to decide the modalities and other aspects related to the election.

Former Uttar Pradesh cabinet minister and prominent OBC leader Swami Prasad Maurya on Friday joined the Samajwadi Party along with another rebel minister Dharam Singh Saini. Five BJP MLAs and Apna Dal (Sonelal) legislator Amar Singh Chaudhary also joined the SP in the presence of Yadav. Yadav’s statements came after the BJP announced the names of 107 candidates for the Uttar Pradesh assembly polls and fielded Adityanath from the Gorakhpur (Urban) assembly constituency. The party has named candidates for the seats going to polls in the first two phases. The list was released by BJP’s Uttar Pradesh incharge and Union Minister Dharmendra Pradhan along with party general secretary Arun Singh during a press conference at the party’s headquarters in Delhi.

For this culture of startups to reach the far-flung parts of the country, it has been decided to celebrate January 16 as National Start-up Day,”, Modi said. Recalling the concept of the current decade as the ‘techade’ of India, he listed three important aspects of the massive changes that
PANAJI, JAN 15 (IANS): A Twitter war has broken out between Congress and Trinamool Congress leaders over the possibility of an alliance between the two parties for the Goa polls. While TMC Lok Sabha MP and Goa in-charge Mahua Moitra made the first overture to the Congress -- along with other non-BJP parties -- for a collective fight against the BJP, Congress Goa in-charge Dinesh Gundu Rao has now chided Moitra in response, ruling out any truck with the West Bengal-based party for the Goa polls. “I wonder who from amongst Delhi leaders response is @MahuaMoitra awaiting. And Trinamool’s brilliant strategy to defeat BJP in Goa is to weaken Congress and divide the anti BJP vote. Whom does that help Moitraji?” Rao tweeted on Saturday. NEW DELHI, JAN 15 (PTI): Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday called for innovating for India and from India to tackle challenges facing the country as he counted steps taken by the government in freeing entrepreneurs and innovation from bureaucratic silos. “Our startups are changing the rules of the game. I believe that startups are going to be the backbone of New India,” he said interacting with youngsters from the world of startups through video conference. “Let us innovate for India, innovate from India.” India, he said, has over 60,000 startups with 42 unicorns. The gover nment is focusing on three aspects -- first, to liberate entrepreneurship and innovation from the web of government processes, bureaucratic silos; second, creating an institutional mechanism to promote innovation; and third, handholding of young innovators and young enterprises, he said. NEW DELHI, JAN 15 (PTI): Prime Minister Narendra Modi will interact with BJP members from Uttar Pradesh’s Varanasi on January 18, the party said on Saturday. This will be Modi’s first political programme involving party workers after the Election Commission announced the schedule for the elections to five state assemblies, including Uttar Pradesh. Sources said it is likely to be a virtual interaction. The Twitter handle of the BJP’s Uttar Pradesh unit shared the programme’s schedule and asked people to share their ideas and suggestions for it through the NaMo app. Announcing the Assembly elections, the EC has banned public meetings and roadshows till January 15 because of the surging COVID-19 cases.
LU C K N OW, J A N 1 5 (IANS): Chandrashekhar Azad, president of the Azad Samaj Party (ASP), has dubbed Samajwadi Party (SP) chief Akhilesh Yadav as ‘anti-Dalit’ and made it clear that he is not going to form an alliance with the SP in the upcoming assembly polls. Chandrashekhar claimed that Akhilesh does not understand the meaning of social justice and accused the SP chief of humiliating him. “Akhilesh has insulted Dalits. He only needs Dalit votes, not leaders. It has become clear from his behaviour that he is similar to the BJP,” Chandrashekhar said while interacting with the media in Lucknow on Saturday. He also asserted that the BJP will not be allowed to come to power.
which he has represented in Lok Sabha for five consecutive terms. Asked about the issue, Pradhan said the chief minister was willing to contest from any of the 403 seats in the state. This is the first time Adityanath will contest Assembly polls. With the Jat-concentrated region going to the polls in the first two phases, the agrarian community, which was at the forefront of the agitation in western Uttar Pradesh against three contentious farm laws, has got 16 seats, sources said. Of the 43 seats from where general castes members have been fielded by the BJP, sources noted that 18 are Thakurs, 10 Brahmins and eight Vaishya. Among the 19 SC candidates in the BJP’s first list, 13 are Jatavs, who make up for more than half of the total Dalit population. The move is seen as a major push by the party to win the support of a section of the community which has been a traditional base of the Mayawati-led Bahujan Samaj Party.
“I have had a lot of meetings with Akhilesh Yadav in the last 6 months and we also had many positive conversations, but in the end I felt that Akhilesh does not need Dalits. He does not want Dalit leaders in his alliance. He only wants Dalits to vote for him,” Chandrashekhar told reporters. He said that all issues including reservation were discussed (with Akhilesh). “Akhilesh assured me he will respond by the evening (on the alliance issue). But he didn’t. Probably doesn’t want an alliance.” “For nine years, I have been gathering the ‘Bahujan’ (Dalit) community. Our aim is to stop the BJP. An attempt was made to stop my press conference. My fight is not to become an MLA, but to get social justice,” Chandrashekhar added.

Faith online
ith looming threat from the expected third wave of COVID-19 pandemic, the world grapples with re-lock options to thwart the spread of the virus. Not only economies and normal life, the covid-19 pandemic has adversely affected Christian religious practises such as cancellation of worship services and the closure of Sunday schools. Due to social-distancing guidelines, many churches needed to find alternatives to normal face-to-face church services and have turned to digital church. Indeed, the pandemic has shaken the church to become exceedingly quick to shift of religious services from in-person to online worship. In fact today, many churches of all Christian denominations have made church services available via radio, online livestreaming or television while others have offered drive-in services in their church parking lots. Traditionally, for Christians the place of worship is integral to the lives of the followers of the faith. The closure of churches during the COVID-19 outbreak and lockdown has forced Christian churches to ‘do’ church differently and to re-imagine the future of the church. However even in the midst of lockdown, many churches have resisted change and spoke against considering or even implementing different ideas of ‘being’ church today. The quest has been to maintain the traditional beliefs and ways of maintaining the practice of churches. The impact of the restrictions being re-imposed in view of threat from a third wave, has thrown into turmoil the concepts among the church about what the future -their lives, work, mission and theology. Some church denominations are firm on having regular fellowships on Sundays by enforcing use of hand sanitisers before entering a church meeting, maintaining safe distance, having 50% of capacity below 200 people, wearing of masks and discouraging handshakes etc. Many local churches throughout the world look into ways of digitizing church practices, though some debated how certain liturgical practices such as communion could or could not be performed online. What has emerged and yet to fully develop is the acceptance that digital age is here to stay and the church, like all other activities has to swim or sink. Some studies have highlighted an increased interest in watching and participating in online church services under lockdown. The interconnectivity promoted by digital technologies has helped promote the ability for individuals to participate in religious activities despite physical distance, including those who previously may have never set foot in a church. In other parts of India, where persecution and attacks on Christians and churches have witnessed a consistent rise especially in the post-2014 period; the restrictions have brought another element. One aspect is that Christians in states where they are prevented even from holding church meetings of Sunday gatherings especially by extremist elements of the Hindu right wing groups such as Bajrang Dal and VHP are active are coming together. The attacks against Christians and church meetings amid the covid-19 pandemic restrictions have not dampened nor destroyed their faith. Instead, the situation has done just the opposite. The attacks have made believers more committed and draw closer as denominational barriers have been broken. They have learnt to pray together wherever they are and find themselves in a situation never before thought of- unity in the midst of adversity.
DailyDevotion Do You Walk In White?
We were buried with Him…that just as Christ was raised from the dead…even so we also should walk in newness of life. —Romans 6:4 No one experiences complete sanctification without going through a “white funeral” — the burial of the old life. If there has never been this crucial moment of change through death, sanctification will never be more than an elusive dream. There must be a “white funeral,” a death with only one resurrection— a resurrection into the life of Jesus Christ. Nothing can defeat a life like this. It has oneness with God for only one purpose— to be a witness for Him. Have you really come to your last days? You have often come to them in your mind, but have you really experienced them? You cannot die or go to your funeral in a mood of excitement. Death means you stop being. You must agree with God and stop being the intensely striving kind of Christian you have been. We avoid the cemetery and continually refuse our own death. It will not happen by striving, but by yielding to death. It is dying— being “baptized into His death” (Romans 6:3). Have you had your “white funeral,” or are you piously deceiving your own soul? Has there been a point in your life which you now mark as your last day? Is there a place in your life to which you go back in memory with humility and overwhelming gratitude, so that you can honestly proclaim, “Yes, it was then, at my ‘white funeral,’ that I made an agreement with God.” “This is the will of God, your sanctification…” (1 Thessalonians 4:3). Once you truly realize this is God’s will, you will enter into the process of sanctification as a natural response. Are you willing to experience that “white funeral” now? Will you agree with Him that this is your last day on earth? The moment of agreement depends on you.

NAGALAND POST, DIMAPUR SUNDAY, JANUARY 16, 2022
66 years of Naga political struggle
(From previous issue) ssamese Battalion, 138 of them, raped two girls in Chari village from 10 A.M. to the following morning 8, A.M. The girls were 15 and 18 years of age. There had been too many instances of cases of raping and assault of women everywhere. GENERAL R.K. KOCHAR G.O.C General R. K. Ko char is the General 0fficer Commanding of the Indian Army now stationed in Nagaland of Kohima and Mokokchung divisions. He talks suavely to the Public. He issued thousands of pamphlets; telling the Nagas and the World that (1) His Army came to Nagaland to protect the villages and the “loyal Nagas” and restore law and order in the country. He instructed the Nagas (2) to throw up hands whenever they meet or go to meet the soldiers and (3) he called upon the Nagas to surrender their arms On 19th April, 1956 the village Chief of Lozaphehe and a group of his people went to meet Indian soldiers. He was immediately shot down. Others escaped. On 16th, June 1956, six people of Settsu village met Indian soldiers. They threw up their hands. All of them were caught and tied hands stretched in the Junction of road and one could escape with his wrist shot off. On April 22,1956 Khensa village 312 houses were burnt down. Five persons age 25,30, 45, 70, and one old woman, age 75, were killed before setting fi re to the village. On 6th June,1956, six men were burnt. 400 Indian Army came to Chungtia village on 18th May, 1956. Petrol’s were dumped from airplane and spread over and the village 380 houses were burned. Two old couples, husband 85, and wife 82, were burnt alive because they refused to move out from their pucca house. Colonel Gurhkish Singh, G.O of Sikhs Divisíon, burnt three men alive on 19th April at 52 and half mile post from Kohima. These Nagas were in the Indian Government service. They were tied together and burnt one mile and seven furlongs from their own 0ffice. Colonel went back to his Chakhaba Camp from Phek on the same day. This Sikhs Division caught twelve men in Chakhabama village on 16th April 1956made then line up in the middle of five machine-guns and shot. The Punjabi 0fficer in Yorubami village tortured and kill ed the prisoner with his Pistol on 18th April, 1956.

The same Sikhs Division arrested Phek Field Christian Missionary, Mr. Pelesato, tortured him day and night and killed. His body has not yet been given to the family. 0n April 20th, 1956, one man from Chazouba village age 50, failed to escape from mass attack. The village, 300 houses, was burnt and the man was bayonetted to death. Colonel Naddapa, C.O of Bihars Division, formerly of Chakhesang now Camp Tsuminyo, killed the village Chief of Phenshunyo and one 16-year-old student on the 9th April. They were tortured, all the hairs were pulled out and killed. On 5th April two men along with their wives caught from Thenoketsu village. The men were tied on the tree and shot right in front of their wives. Four other men were massacred on the same day. They also shot their servant, a Naga, half paralysed, who was drawing water for them. Killing men and burning houses in villages continue daily. Wherever Indian Army go to burnt village. They often shell the village, from a distance half a mile or so. Whoever failed to escape always meet horrible torture and death. NAGA HOME GUARDS ATTACKED KOHIMA In 1952, a Naga leader was killed by an Indian Officer in Kohima. Naga kept quiet. An inquiry Commission was demanded. Twelve Nagas were sent to Indian jail and the Indian officer was reported to have been promoted. In 1953, mass arrest started by April after the visit of the Indian Prime Minister Mr. Jawaharlal Nehru, Khonoma village, was attacked (the first village to be attacked) on May 30, by Assam Rifles and A.P. Battalion reported to be a strength of 1200 or so. Houses were searched and people were beaten. Nagas kept quiet A New Regulation of “ FORCED LABOUR” was passed and introduced in Nagaland in the month of September. The Naga Headman (GBs) throughout the country where this system was functioning, resigned from their elective 73-yearold administrative agency. Written memorandum of resignation was presented to the Indian authority on September 29, 1953. They resigned in protest of the “FORCE LABOUR” as they could not represent the people or the government. Headman ship was introduced in the country by the British in 1880. The Indian Community Project Scheme was rejected before it was introduced in Nagaland, and letter was submitted to
the Authority concerned on 29, 1953. In 1954, more men and women were beaten and tortured than in previous year. Many villages were attacked in various parts of Nagaland. In 1955, seeing that arrest, beating and torture were not enough to make the Nagas submit, the Indian Armed Forces commenced attacking the villages, pulled down the houses and schools, beaten and tortured many people to death. Women became a target of assault because of their zeal in National Cause, and also, may be, to make the people what they will call “rebel” Mangmetong village 365 houses, was attacked 37 times. AoMokochung village was attacked 19 times. Property have been looted. Granaries have been destroyed People were not allowed to go to their field’s cultivation. If they go, they do so at their own risk. With all these persecutions and provocations, Nagas tolerate the free Indian Government, and appealed for reasonable understanding. Not a single Naga stood up, even for self-defence, against any Indian 0fficers or their government personnel’s. Man to man, we know who we are, we waited for Indian’s wisdom and for their human understanding. If any Indian (even a police or clerk) was killed, beaten or threatened by any Naga, Indian Government was bound to capitalised it and this would been done long ago. We never wanted our right to exchange for a wrong Nagas wanted peace, If the Indian Government will not harass the Nagas, peace is always there. Nagas never go about shouting slogans and make a walking demonstration against the Indian government. Nagas never consider the Indian government as an undesirable part of our life. We manage our own affairs. We do not depend upon, and we do not need, Indian Courts and police or military protections. Naga Community organisation made it possible for every Naga to live in peace without worry and without fear of any person or group of persons. Nagas leaders signed a pledge for peace with the Chief Minister of Assam Sri, Bishnuram Medhi on August 13, 1955.It was Clearly agreed that the pledge will not be twisted to one’s own favour. The agreement was not kept. The Indian Deputy Commissioner translated the pledge to his on design. He appeared that the troubles end chaos in the country were created by the Nagas themselves and not by the
Indian Armed Forces who were solely responsible and the root cause of present troubles. When the Indian Amy came in, they started their military operation of building houses and killing the people wherever they go. Kohima became the venomous Centre of military operations which effected the whole area. Our National Patriot forces of Home Guards had no other alternative left to save and defend our people. So, they were compelled to attack Kohima and block the supplying route; and also attack other supplying bases to prevent, as much as possible further destruction of human life and property. For this National emergency precautions, the highway between Imphal and Kuda (Dimapur) Via Kohima, a distance of 130 miles, had been locked, It will cause great inconvenience to our Manipur neighbours, but this is only for temporary measure. The road will be opened again for public throughfare. Except for those of our people men, women and children, who died through torture and cold-blooded massacre, how many people already died or did not die through machine gun and rifle bullets abs due to shelling our position and camps of the common people, cannot yet be revealed for national security reasons. Those of the causalities accrued to accounted here in the present announcement. Most of the population in Nagaland is now taking shelter in the fields in the jungles, forests, and by the river side. Wherever camps are observed or smoke is seen, and signs of human habitation is reported by airplanes, the place is shelled and fire machine guns all around. Kekerkie villages an instance. They took shelter in the forest, and when the Army observed at, 250 shells fell in their camp. The whole surrounding areas were spread with machine gun bullets. Shelling continued for days together. This is daily experience now and not a single person is saved even in the rice cultivation. How long our Naga people have yet to endure this man-created sufferings and has face tormented death, we do not know. It is in the hands of the honourable Prime Minister of India Mr. Jawaharlal Nehru. His mind is unfathomable for simple folks like us. But we defend upon his substance who will not recant his philosophy of life in his sincere convictions of human values. He wrote about the Kurds while giving the Glimpses of world history ‘in which he said
“It is strange how a defensive Nationalism develops into an aggressive one, and a fight for Freedom become one for dominion: Over others.” This is not a misquotation, for he made quite clear and said, but how can wone crush for ever a people who insist on freedom and are prepared to pay the price for it?” Our Naga people are entirely in the hand of this great men now who always stood on the side of the oppressed. He also enjoined upon the Government of the World to adopt the Gandhian approach of friendliness and understanding to the movements of the human minds in which he said in London on June 11, 1953. I beg of you to try to understand something of the vast movements of the human mind which are taking place in Asia in Africa. The pace is fast and unless one has sympathy end keep pace with it, it may lead to results which may be undesirable. We must view these developments with the inner eye of sympathy”. We ask ourself, are we wrong in defending our people, our life and property? the more we tried to please the Indian Government, and tolerate them, the worse we were being treated. The Indian’s Jails and camps in Nagaland became places of torment. Death hovers around the region where the Indians tread. Where is the Human Right for the Nagas? Our Naga people are being compelled to take oath of allegiance to the Indian Union at the point of bayonet; and they are being compelled to give their finger print as commanded to do or DIE. It was not out of “ loyalty to India” they do so. They cannot die just yet. In Imshunger area, the people were forced to drink liquid in taking oath diluted with BLOOD. Christian CHURCH and Church properties are being burnt down and still burning. Church rice stores were reduced to ashes. Houses built by the America Missionaries were burnt. Church floor timbers were used for military road constructions. Religious plans of other faith of Nagas were desecrated. Houses and Villages are being burnt and still burning. Grain stores have been burnt and still burning. Standing crops in the field were cut down and still cutting, Earth and sand are being thrown in the hidden stores, of grains and food STUFFS. Camps are being searched and burnt or pulled down, the houses of the
Nagas now in Jails were all burnt. ORDER HAVE BEEN MADE KNOWN that village will be wiped out, and also the families of Naga Home-Guards will be killed. NAGA HOME GUARD is a department in the Federal Government of Nagaland which had been established on 22nd March, 1956. NAGA GOVERNMENT had been set up not for the purpose of opposing the Indian Government, which we cannot, but for establishment of Naga right for National INDEPENDENCE. THE ANSWER WE NEED. If your wife is kicked to death, daughter raped, father and mother were burnt alive, houses and grain stores were burnt into ashes, and your brother is beaten and made crippled. WHAT WILL YOU DO? That answer is our answer who are yet alive. If Mahatma Gandhi were alive, who told the Naga delegation (NEW DELHI July 19th 1947) to ask the congress Government kill him first before they kill any Naga, certainly would have said “REVOLT “. I would risk violence a thousand times rather? than the emasculation of the race “I advised killing and being killed rather than shamefully fleeing from danger” “I must alive. I would not be a vassal to any Nation or body. I must have absolute Independence or parish. To seek to win in a class of arms would be pure bravado. Not so, if in defying the might of one who would deprive me of my Independence”, and this is, by the force of cruel circumstances, what the Naga also with the father of the Indian been a shame on our part to have the ambivalent feeling of wishing to be with India and yet complain for better treatment. In real meekness, and with our greatest respect to the great people in the Government of India, we say that we thank India. The British left, and it was no doubt through the great Mission of Mahatma Gandhi. We did not accept the Indian Government as the subrogation of the imperialist British and for this the Indian made clear to the Government of India from the very beginning of the emancipation of India. We did not demand for a self-Governing state within the Indian constitution. And we very humbly and honourably request India to leave us alone and allow the Naga to exist in this world as a distinct and Free Nation in the peoples Sovereign State of Nagaland. Time to hone vocational skills in students Sir,
With the resumption of online classes due to the pandemic, it has become critical to prepare our students for the future. The education department of the state and various organizations can take up the initiative here. Even as our students continue to be imparted theoretical knowledge, there is no harm in learning a new skill or honing latent talents or skills. I strongly believe this will keep constrictively engaged and help them grow into productive and independent citizens. Temjen Jamir, Dimapur. newspaper nor that of the Editor in any manner.

As a result of a series of military and diplomatic talks, the two sides completed the disengagement process last year in the north and south banks of the Pangong lake and in the Gogra area. However, disengagement process is yet to be done in areas of Hot Springs, Depsang bulge and Demchok. Each side currently has around 50,000 to 60,000 troops along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in the sensitive sector. Gen Naravane said that the situ-
ation on the LoC (Line of Control) is better than the previous year but Pakistan is still harbouring terrorists. Nearly 300-400 terrorists in training camps across the border are waiting to intrude into India, he said, adding a total of 194 terrorists were killed in counteroperations in the last one year. “Attempts to smuggle arms across the border through drones continue,” he mentioned. In the interior areas of Jammu and Kashmir, there has been progressive improvement during the last two years, he noted. Therefore, terrorist organisations across the border have been trying to create hurdles on the path of the development and they have increased their attempts, the Army chief stated. “It is a part of their conspiracy to target nonlocals and poor labourers,” he added. The security situation in the Northeast has improved significantly in the last one year due to proactive military operations, he mentioned. Because of these operations, most of the ter-
rorist organisations in the Northeast have announced ceasefire, he said. The reduction in the number of troops to handle the internal security is a sign of improved situation, he added. India’s Myanmar border is very important in terms of security and Assam Rifles is giving proper attention to it, he said. The Army and Assam Rifles, along with the state governments in the Northeast, are jointly giving shape to the ‘Act East’ policy of the central government, Gen Naravane noted. He said the Indian Army is taking concrete steps to modernise itself so as to face current challenges and future dangers. “Along with top institutions such as IITs, the Army is speedily working on new technologies such as blockchain, artificial intelligence, quantum computing, unmanned systems, directed energy weapons and swarm drones,” he mentioned. Gen Naravane said the plan to creating joint theatre commands with the Indian Navy and the Indian Air Force is moving ahead in a time-bound manner.
Army Day parade: Indian Army unveils new combat uniform
A contingent of commandos of Parachute regiment, wearing the new uniforms, took part in the Army Day parade that was conducted at the Cariappa ground.
NEW DELHI, JAN 15 (PTI): The Indian Army on Saturday unveiled a new combat uniform that is comfortable, climate friendly and features a digital disruptive pattern. A contingent of commandos of Parachute regiment, wearing the new uniforms, took part in the Army Day parade that was conducted at the Cariappa ground here. The uniform, which features a mix of colours
including olive and earthen, has been designed taking into considerations aspects like areas of deployment of the troops and climatic conditions in which they operate. The new uniform has been designed after analysing combat uniforms of armies of various other countries, in association with National Institute of Fashion Technology, sources said. This uniform is more comfortable and it
would be worn in all types of terrains, they said. The digital disruptive pattern is designed with help of computer aid, they said. The shirt in the new uniform does not have to be tucked in the trouser, the sources said. The shirt in the old uniform had to be tucked in. The sources said the new uniforms would not be available in the open market.
Three lakh take holy dip in Ganga amid rising Covid cases Police plan to appeal against Bishop
PRAYAGRAJ (UP), JAN 15 (PTI): Around three lakh devotees took a dip in the Ganga here on Saturday in connection with Makar Sankranti despite the coronavirus threat. The Magh Mela area has been witnessing the arrival of devotees since morning and around three lakh people, including children and the elderly, had taken bath in the river by 2 pm, an official of the annual religious event said. On Friday, around 6.5 lakh people took a holy dip in the river in Prayagraj on the occasion of Makar Sankranti. Around 1,25,000 masks were distributed in the Mela area till 12 noon on Saturday, the official said, adding that awareness about compliance of the coronavirus protocol is being spread through 25 Covid help desks. Holding the event amid rising number of coronavirus cases has emerged as a major challenge before the fair administration. In fact, many on-duty police personnel were found infected with COVID-19 even before the start of the fair. The Praya-
Franco’s acquittal in nun rape case
KOTTAYAM (KERALA), JAN 15 (PTI): A day after a Sessions Court here acquitted Roman Catholic Bishop Franco Mulakkal of the charge of raping a nun in a convent in the State, Kerala police on Saturday sought legal advice to move an appeal against the verdict in the High Court. Kottayam SP D Shilpa told reporters that the police have sought legal opinion from the special public prosecutor to move an appeal against the judgment. “We got the detailed verdict late Friday. We have sought a Covid norms flouted as devotees take a dip in the Ganges.
graj district administration has already announced that it will be mandatory for visitors to the fair area to come with a negative RTPCR report, not older than 48 hours. They are also expected to mandatorily carry certificates of both doses of
vaccination and maintain Covid-appropriate behaviour. The mela administration has divided the fair area into five sectors. Five pontoon bridges have been erected so that devotees staying in more than 3,200
institutions and camps in all these sectors can have an easy access to 12 bathing ghats in the Mela area. Two 50-bed hospitals, named Ganga and Triveni, 12 health camps and 10 treatment centres have also been set up in the Mela area.

legal opinion to move the appeal,” she said. Meanwhile, Bishop visited various churches and met former MLA P C George, who had been backing Mulakkal since the issue came out. The Bishop, after a
brief meeting with George, left for other visits to churches nearby, but refused to comment before the media. George, who met the media after the meeting, said the case was an effort to target the Church. He said the case was part of a conspiracy to target the Church and the believers. Mulakkal, 57, was accused of raping the nun multiple times during his visit to a convent in this district between 2014 and 2016 when he was the Bishop of the Jalandhar Diocese of the Roman Catholic Church.

NEW DELHI, JAN 15 (PTI): The Indian Army’s message is clear that it will not let any attempt to unilaterally change the status quo along the country’s borders succeed, Army Chief Gen M M Naravane said on Saturday. In his address at the Army Day Parade here, he said last year was extremely challenging for the Army and cited the developments on the northern borders with China. Army Day is observed on January 15 to mark Field Marshall K M Cariappa taking over as the first Indian Commander-in-Chief of the Indian Army, replacing his British predecessor in 1949. Referring to the eastern Ladakh standoff, Gen Naravane said that to keep the situation under control, the 14th round military-level talks were held between India and China recently. He said joint efforts at various levels have led to disengagement in many areas which in itself is a constructive step. Gen Naravane said that on the basis of mutual and equal security, efforts would continue to find a solution to the current situ-

input credit against these materials, it said. It has also sought waiver of coal cess or refund of input tax credit (ITC) on GST compensation cess of Rs 400 per tonne of coal consumed for domestic steel sales. This assumes significance as the government had created the National Clean Energy Fund with contributions from the clean energy cess imposed on coal mined in India or imported. The cess rose from Rs 50 per tonne in 2010 to Rs 400 a tonne in 2016. However, with GST coming into effect, it became a part of the GST compensation cess. In another important suggestion submitted to the government, the industry body has also sought the removal of ‘Lesser Duty Rule’ or LDR, which was introduced over two decades ago in 1999. Incidentally, the ISA has highlighted the fact that even the Ministry of Commerce is in favour of removal of LDR. According to the industry body, the LDR has become ineffective since it is not binding upon WTO members and large economies including USA, China and Canada among others do not follow the rule even as import tariffs have been reduced to as low as zero under the various Free Trade Agreements and Regional

Trade Agreements. “ISA’s submission to the government ahead of the Union Budget has covered a wide spectrum of concerns of the Indian steel players. Our memorandum highlights the issues that need to be resolved for the steel sector to grow from the current installed capacity of 144 million tonnes to 300 million tonnes, as laid down by the National Steel Policy unveiled in 2017,” says said Alok Sahay, Secretary General, Indian Steel Association. “Reduction and rationalisation of certain duties along with certain policy measures will help create a level playing field in the global arena especially where 2/3rd of imports from countries having FTA with India arrive at zero basic customs duty...,” adds Sahay. Today, the company has enhanced prices across its models in the range of 0.1 per cent to 4.3 per cent owing to increase in various input costs. “The weighted average price increase in exshowroom Prices (Delhi) across models is 1.7 per cent”.
NEW DELHI, JAN 15 (AGENCIES): Steel industry, which plays an important role in the overall infrastructure development of the country, wants the government to review the customs duty levied on some of the raw materials used by the sector and also certain tax rules that will help create a level-playing field for Indian steel manufacturers in the global arena. Ahead of the Union Budget 2022-23, the Indian Steel Association (ISA), the industry body of steel manufacturers of the country, has submitted its wish list to the government, which, among other things, calls for reducing and rationalising various duties and taxes along with policy measures to boost the growth of the industry, Business Today reported. The ISA has requested the government to reduce the basic customs duty on coking coal, SS scrap, nickel to nil from the current 1 per cent plus 1.5 per cent agriculture cess since the availability of these input raw materials is very low. It has also sought the inclusion of petrol, oil, lubricants and natural gas under the purview of GST. Since these are currently outside the purview of GST, steel companies are not able to avail of any

effective from December 15, 2021. This looks like it is a signal for a start to the end of the low interest rate regime. That is because besides being a reference rate for borrowers, the base rate also works as an indicator of the direction of the overall interest rate in the economy. A rise in base rate indicates that the falling interest rate trend is finally reversing and going forward we may see a few more hikes in interest rates. Rising interest rate is good news for fixed deposit investors who have been earning one of lowest returns in the last two decades. Banks are slowly beginning to increase FD rates now. KOLKATA, JAN 15 (PTI): Engineering Export Promotion Council of India has expressed concern that the spread of Omicron, the new variant of coronavirus, may once again disrupt the global supply chain, which could lead to a slowdown in trading activities. Exports of engineering goods registered a 38 per cent year-on-year growth in December, 2021 to USD 38.4 billion. The sustained growth momentum demonstrates the sector is well on track to grow its market share in the global trade, EEPC India chairman Mahesh Desai said in a statement on Friday. “While the order pipeline has been remarkably good, we could see some slowdown if Omicron disrupts the global supply chain. In the recent weeks, we have seen some signs of volatility and uncertainty due to the ongoing pandemic wave across the world but by putting suitable policy measures in place, the government could provide cushion to trade and business,” Desai said. He called for urgent action on part of the government to reduce soaring raw material prices and logistics costs. “We hope that in the upcoming budget, the government will take appropriate measures to reduce the cost of primary steel, copper, aluminium and other raw materials. This will be a major relief for the sector which is dominated by micro, small and medium enterprises,” he said. Some policy push now would keep the industry ready to take challenges in future and set higher export targets next financial year, he added.

Joe Biden wants to be seen as backing down before either domestic or foreign audiences. The refusal thus far by each side to climb down from what the other regards as unrealistic and maximalist demands has left the prospects for diplomacy in limbo, with the U.S. and its allies accusing Russia of stoking tensions for no legitimate reason and the Russians complaining again that the Americans are the aggressors. Some believe the situation will have to become even more dire before the impasse can be broken. “The gap in perceptions is so broad that a new and dangerous escalation could be necessary to make the parties open up their imagination and search for agreements,” Fyodor Lukyanov, the head of the Moscow-based Council for Foreign and Defense
‘Partygate’ pressure builds on Boris Johnson’s leadership LONDON, JAN 15 (PTI): The UK Opposition is leading the charge to pile pressure on British Prime Minister Boris Johnson on Saturday as a picture of a boozy culture at the heart of Downing Street emerges, with new reports of so-called “wine-time Fridays” by staff during the COVID-19 lockdown. Opposition Labour Party Leader, Sir Keir Starmer, used a major speech to say the so-called “partygate” scandal shows that Johnson is guilty of “deceit and deception” and unable to lead the country. Starmer’s latest salvo comes as a poll for the ‘The Times’ found that seven out of 10 British voters think Johnson has not been honest about his account of attending a lockdown breaking party in Downing Street. The YouGov survey found that 70 per cent of voters, including over half of those who voted for Conservative in the 2019 election, did not believe Johnson’s account to the Commons. Eight out of 10 said they did not think the gathering, as described by the prime minister in Parliament earlier this week as a work event, was accept-

able under lockdown rules. “We are witnessing the broken spectacle of a prime minister mired in deceit and deception, unable to lead,” Starmer said in an address to the Fabian Society conference. Besides the Opposition raising the pitch of its attacks on the UK PM, Johnson is said to have gone into hiding this weekend amid a near-mutiny from many of his own members of Parliament and activists. ‘Sky News’ says there are reports that he is plotting a fightback to save his premiership, which he is calling “Operation Save Big Dog”. Meanwhile, the ‘Daily Mirror’ claims Johnson encouraged his aides to “let off steam” despite being banned from socialising in big groups under his own lockdown rules at the peak of the pandemic.

Some think Putin’s focus on NATO, which has struggled for years with questions about its relevance, may have given the alliance a new lease on life. “This is an extremely uncertain and tense period without an obvious way out unless Putin backs down,” said Jeff Rathke, a Europe expert and former U.S. diplomat who is currently president of the American Institute for Contemporary German Studies at Johns Hopkins University. “He’s talked himself into a frenzy that is hard to walk away from if he doesn’t get the fundamental redrawing of the European security architecture that he claims to want. 6 people shot outside Oregon concert in US EUGENE (US), JAN 15 (AP): Six people were shot during a concert at an event hall in Oregon on Friday night, and the suspected shooter was not yet in custody, police said. Officers responded to the WOW Hall in Eugene after reports of a shooting around 9:30 pm, police said in a statement. “What law enforcement found when they came on scene is what you would exactly expect when six people just got shot,” Eugene Police Chief Chris Skinner said at a news conference. “People are just trying to get out of here, their friends are on the ground, they’re trying to help.” Six people were taken to the hospital, and at least one of them was in critical condition, Skinner said. The extent of the other injuries was not immediately clear. The shooting happened in a back parking lot outside the venue, police and WOW Hall leaders said. A concert featuring Lil Bean & Zay Bang, and other artists, was being held at the hall at the time. Police said no suspect was in custody. Skinner described “chaos” when officers arrived, and said investigators had not received much information from possible witnesses.

In an instruction to the political and legal work committee of the ruling Communist Party of China (CPC), Xi said efforts should be made to ensure fair access to justice for every individual, the staterun Xinhua news agency reported on Saturday. Calling on the political and legal work front to uphold the absolute leadership of the CPC and draw wisdom and strength from the party’s century-long struggle, Xi urged party officials to promote the ability to forestall and defuse major risks and improve law enforcement and judicial policies and measures. He also stressed on deepening the comprehensive reform of political and legal work and consolidating the achievement made in the education campaign of officers of the front. Party committees at all levels should study and resolve the prominent issues that restrain political and legal work in a timely manner and support political and legal organs to perform their duties in accordance with laws, Xi noted in the instruction. to provide a strong guarantee for advancing the ‘Peaceful China’ initiative and promoting the rule of law at a higher level, thus welcoming the 20th CPC National Congress with solid actions, he said. The second five-year term of 68-year-old Xi as the CPC General Secretary, the central authority of power, will end this year. He is widely expected to continue in the post for an unprecedented third term and perhaps for life after the once-in-five-year CPC Congress, scheduled to be held in the middle of this year, and re-appointed as president and head of the powerful Central Military Commission (CMC). All his predecessors, including Hu Jintao who handed over the reins to Xi in 2012, retired after
two terms in power as a widely-followed convention to encourage the new and collective leadership of the party. A major constitutional amendment in 2018 removed the two-term limit for president to enable Xi to continue in the post. Decks for Xi’s continuation as CPC General Secretary were cleared at the last year’s meeting of the party’s Plenum, a powerful conclave of the party, for his continuation in power, perhaps for life. Politically, the meeting is regarded as significant for Xi, who in the last nine years of his tenure in power, has emerged as the most powerful leader after party founder Mao Zedong. He was also made core leader of the party in 2016, a status enjoyed by Mao.
Volcano erupts near Tonga, islanders rush to escape waves
WELLINGTON, JAN 15 (AP): An undersea volcano erupted in spectacular fashion near the Pacific nation of Tonga on Saturday, sending large waves crashing across the shore and people rushing to higher ground. There were no immediate reports of injuries or the extent of the damage as communications with the small nation remained problematic. Video posted to social media showed large waves washing ashore in coastal areas, swirling around homes and buildings. New Zealand’s military said it was monitoring the situation and remained on standby, ready to assist if asked. Satellite images

N Korea says it test launched missiles from train SEOUL, JAN 15 (AP): North Korea on Saturday said it test-launched ballistic missiles from a train in what was seen as an apparent retaliation against fresh sanctions imposed by the Biden administration. The re por t by the North state media came a day after South Korea’s military said it detected the North firing two missiles into the sea in its third weapons launch this month. The launch came hours after Pyongyang’s Foreign Ministry issued a statement berating the United States for imposing new sanctions over the North’s previous tests and warned of stronger and more explicit action if Washington maintains its “confrontational stance.” North Korea in recent months has been ramping up tests of new missiles designed to overwhelm mis-
away from Russia’s main demands, adding that Moscow will focus on NATO non-expansion. And he insisted that it’s the U.S. that’s formulating the position in talks while other allies just march on its orders. “To be frank, everyone understands that the prospect for reaching a deal depends on the U.S.,” Lavrov said. He said whatever the U.S. says about the need to consult allies in negotiations “are just excuses and attempts to drag the process out.” Thus, the stalemate. The West’s approach has been to have “as much diplomatic effort as possible to de-escalate,” said Andrew Weiss, vice president for studies at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, where he oversees research in Washington and Moscow on Russia and Eurasia. “The problem we’ve got is that the Russians mean business, and they’ve shown us in a bunch of cases, in 2014, in 2008, that they’re prepared to go to war to get these things, and we’re not,” he said. “And that’s the challenge.” The tough and uncompromising Russian positions have led some to believe that Moscow will only up the ante after receiving what all sides expect will be formal, written refusals from the U.S. and NATO to accede to its demands.
missiles that accurately struck a sea target, the report said. The North’s Rodong Sinmun newspaper published photos of what appeared to be two different missiles soaring above from rail cars engulfed in smoke. Cheong Seong-Chang, an analyst at the private Sejong Institute in South Korea, said the North likely staged a launch that hadn’t been previously planned to demonstrate its opposition toward US sanctions. The missiles fired from rail cars appeared to be a solid-fuel short-range weapon the North has apparently modelled after Russia’s Iskander mobile ballistic system. First tested in 2019, the missile is designed to be maneuverable and fly at low altitudes, which potentially improve their chances of evading and defeating missile systems.
ficials had said they should be prioritised for health care workers. In updated guidance posted late Friday afternoon, CDC officials removed concerns related to supply shortages and more clearly said that properly fitted N95 and KN95 masks offer the most protection. However, agency officials noted some masks
are harder to tolerate than others, and urged people to choose good-fitting masks that they will wear consistently. “Our main message continues to be that any mask is better than no mask,” Kristen Nordlund, a CDC spokeswoman, said in a statement. The CDC has evolved its mask guidance throughout the pandemic.

U.S. officials from Biden, Secretary of State Antony Blinken and national security adviser Jake Sullivan to chief negotiator Wendy Sherman have said it is Russia that faces a “stark choice.” De-escalate or face punishing sanctions and the opposite of what it wants: an increased NATO presence in Eastern Europe and a more well-armed Ukraine. Yet in Russia, officials say the shoe is on the other foot. They have cast their demands as an “absolute imperative” and have argued that the Western failure to meet them makes talks on other issues irrelevant. Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said Friday that Russia had vainly tried for years to persuade the U.S. and its allies to engage in talks on the non-deployment of intermediate-range missiles to Europe, limits on war games and rules to avoid dangerously close encounters between Russian and allied warships and aircraft until the U.S. and NATO expressed willingness to discuss those issues this week. He attributed the change in approach to a U.S. desire to shift attention

WASHINGTON, JAN 15 (AGENCIES): The failure of last week’s highstakes diplomatic meetings to resolve escalating tensions over Ukraine has put Russia, the United States and its European allies in uncharted post-Cold War territory, posing significant challenges for the main players to avoid an outright and potentially disastrous confrontation. Unlike previous disagreements that have arisen since the collapse of the Soviet Union, the current Ukraine crisis and seemingly insurmountable differences between Washington and Moscow carry real risks of debilitating economic warfare and military conflict that are exacerbated by the dangers of miscalculation and overreaction. For the U.S. and its NATO and other European allies, nothing less than a vast pullback of the roughly 100,000 Russian troops now deployed near the Ukrainian border will prove that Russian President Vladimir Putin has any intention of negotiating in good faith. For the Russians, the West’s absolute refusal to consider a ban on NATO expansion and the withdrawal of troops from Eastern Europe is proof of its perfidy. Potential concessions are complicated by the fact neither Putin nor President

No trace of life in meteorite from Mars: Study Kamjila crowned Miss Chang 2022
A
4 billion-year-old meteorite from Mars that caused a splash here on Earth decades ago contains no evidence of ancient, primitive Martian life after all, scientists reported Thursday. In 1996, a NASAled team announced that organic compounds in the rock appeared to have been left by living creatures. Other scientists were skeptical and researchers chipped away at that premise over the decades, most recently by a team led by the Carnegie Institution for Science’s Andrew Steele. Tiny samples from the meteorite show the carbon-rich compounds are actually the result of water — most likely salty, or briny, water — flowing over the rock for a prolonged period, Steele said. The findings appear in the journal Science. During Mars’ wet and early past, at least two impacts occurred near the rock, heating the planet’s

surrounding surface, before a third impact bounced it off the red planet and into space millions of years ago. The 4-pound (2-kilogram) rock was found in Antarctica in 1984.
Groundwater moving through the cracks in the rock, while it was still on Mars, formed the tiny globs of carbon that are present, according to the researchers. The same thing can
happen on Earth and could help explain the presence of methane in Mars’ atmosphere, they said. But two scientists who took part in the original study took issue with these latest findings, calling them “disappointing.” In a shared email, they said they stand by their 1996 observations. “While the data presented incrementally adds to our knowledge of (the meteorite), the interpretation is hardly novel, nor is it supported by the research,” wrote Kathie ThomasKeprta and Simon Clemett, astromaterial researchers at NASA’s Johnson Space Center in Houston. “Unsupported speculation does nothing to resolve the conundrum surrounding the origin of organic matter” in the meteorite, they added. According to Steele, advances in technology made his team’s new findings possible. He commended the measurements by the origi-
nal researchers and noted that their life-claiming hypothesis “was a reasonable interpretation” at the time. He said he and his team — which includes NASA, German and British scientists — took care to present their results “for what they are, which is a very exciting discovery about Mars and not a study to disprove” the original premise. This finding “is huge for our understanding of how life started on this planet and helps refine the techniques we need to find life elsewhere on Mars, or Enceladus and Europa,” Steele said in an email, referring to Saturn and Jupiter’s moons with subsurface oceans. The only way to prove whether Mars ever had or still has microbial life, according to Steele, is to bring samples to Earth for analysis. NASA’s Perseverance Mars rover already has collected six samples for return to Earth in a decade or so; three dozen samples are desired.

enzel Washington comes across like the consummate Shakespeare disciple. He played Othello in college, first gained notice in an offBroadway performance of Coriolanus, starred as Richard III at the Public Theater in 1990, co-starred in Kenneth Branagh’s 1993 film adaption Much Ado About Nothing and headlined Julius Caesar on Broadway in 2005. Now he’s on the brink of landing a ninth Oscar nomination for taking on one of the Bard’s most tragic figures, the lead in Joel Coen’s The Tragedy of Macbeth. The 67-year-old actor made a surprising admission, however, in a new interview with Yahoo Entertainment. “I’ve never seen anybody else’s Macbeth,” said Washington (watch above), who’s landing

I’d never seen the play. … There was one movie [he likely means 2015’s Macbeth with Michael Fassbender]. I saw a little bit of that. So I didn’t have a preconceived notion of what it should be, which is the way I prefer it, actually. “I wouldn’t want to see other interpretations because then you start thinking about what you wouldn’t do,
he continues. “You’re starting off in it with a negative. ... It messes up your whole game.” The Tragedy of Macbeth also stars Frances McDormand, Corey Hawkins, Brendan Gleeson, Harry Melling, Bertie Carvel, Alex Hassell, Kathryn Hunter, Moses Ingram and Sean Patrick Thomas — an multicultural ensemble that Hawkins (Straight Outta Compton, In the Heights) points out is the most diverse he has seen a Shakespeare performance.

roduction on ‘Black Panther: Wakanda Forever’ is restarting after star Letitia Wright recovered from injuries she sustained last year. Shooting resumes in Atlanta next week for a four-week shoot. Wright plays Shuri, the sister of King T’Challa, who provides the Black Panther and his allies with state-of-the-art Wakandan technology. Late last summer, Wright injured herself performing a stunt on location in Boston. The production shot as much as they could without her and shut down in November to give the star time to recover. At the time of Wright’s injury, the studio said the injury wouldn’t impact the production schedule. “Letitia has been recovering in London since
the October 21 incident, when Baldwin (allegedly unaware) fired a live round during the set-up for a scene from ‘Rust’, killing Halyna Hutchins and wounding director Joel Souza. Aaron Dyer, who is Baldwin’s civil attorney, said in a statement quoted by ‘Variety’: “Alec voluntarily provided his phone to the authorities this morning so that they can finish their investigation. But this matter isn’t about his phone, and there are no answers on his phone.” He added: “Alec did nothing wrong. It is clear that he was told it was a cold gun, and was following instructions when this tragic accident occurred.
The real question that needs to be answered is how live rounds got on the set in the first place.” The investigators from Santa Fe had asked Baldwin to surrender his phone voluntarily, but his attorney advised them to get a warrant, according to the search warrant affidavit. iffany Haddish was arrested on suspicion of DUI in Georgia early Friday mor ning, PEOPLE has confirmed. The 42-year-old comedian was arrested by Peachtree City police officers for a suspected DUI and improper stopping on a roadway, authorities tell PEOPLE. According to police, officers received a 911 call around 2:30 a.m. about a driver who had allegedly fallen asleep at the wheel on Highway 74. While en route, officers located a car that matched the description from the 911 call and conducted a traffic stop. “Subsequent investigation led to Ms. Tiffany Haddish being arrested for Driving Under the Influence,” police told PEOPLE. “She was transported to the Fayette County Jail
without incident.” TMZ was first to report the news of Haddish’s arrest. The outlet reports that Haddish posted a bond and left jail at about 6:30 a.m. Authorities alleged to TMZ that the actress had been smoking marijuana. Repre-
sentatives for Haddish did not immediately respond to PEOPLE’s request for comment. This comes as the Girls Trip actress has experienced a difficult last few weeks with four deaths in her personal life: her grandmother (who raised her), her pet dog, and close friends Bob Saget and Carl Craig. Speaking with Extra in an interview published Friday, Haddish added that she is “just sad because I’ve had some losses.”
Ocean heat hit record high in 2021 as Earth warms, says NOAA
E
arth had one of its warmest years on record last year, continuing an alarmingly steady trend where each of the past four decades has ranked hotter than the one before it, government science agencies announced Thursday. The global average surface temperature in 2021 was the sixth-highest in recorded history, coming in 1.51 degrees Fahrenheit warmer than the 20th century average, according to officials at NASA and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. The newly announced figures are based on independent analyses done yearly by both agencies. K Y M C
The report’s findings are an important indicator of the planet’s long-term health and provide a gauge of how Earth’s climate has changed from year to year since record-keeping began in 1880. NASA said global average surface temperatures last year tied with 2018 as the sixth-warmest on record, but noted that the past eight years have collectively been the warmest years in recorded history. “Science leaves no room for doubt: Climate change is the existential threat of our time,” NASA Administrator Bill Nelson said in a statement. Ocean heat content, which is a measure of the amount of heat stored in the up-
per levels of the ocean, hit a record high in 2021, according to the NOAA report. Russell Vose, chief of climate monitoring at NOAA’s National Centers for Environmental Information, said the warmth of the world’s oceans last year was “the highest since records began six decades ago.” “The point is, the oceans are storing a heck of a lot of heat,” he added. Though oceans naturally absorb and store heat, the pace of ocean warming is a concern because increasing temperatures in these bodies of water can contribute to ocean acidification, sea-level rise and extreme weather.

Man City extend Premier League lead De Bruyne fires Man City 13 points clear of Chelsea
MANCHESTER, JAN 15 (AGENCIES): Manchester City took another huge step towards retaining the Premier League title as one moment of inspiration from Kevin De Bruyne saw off Chelsea 1-0 to open up a 13-point lead at the top of the table. A game of few chances was brought to life by the Belgian 20 minutes from time as he curled home the only goal from outside the box to seal a 12th consecutive league win for the champions. Chelsea got the better of Pep Guardiola’s men in last season’s Champions League final, but securing their place in Europe’s top club competition next season now looks like the height of their ambitions for the rest of the Premier League season. The Blues remain second but have won just one of their last six league games. Four of the five meet-

ings between the sides since Thomas Tuchel took charge of Chelsea have been won by a single goal and another cagey encounter ensued. City dominated possession but struggled to open up a makeshift Chelsea defence featuring secondchoice goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga and Malang Sarr on just his second Premier League appearance. Indeed City’s one clear chance before the break came from a Chelsea mistake. Mateo Kovacic’s pass
deflected off De Bruyne into the path of Jack Grealish, but the most expensive English player of all-time missed the chance to mark his biggest moment yet as a City player as his shot was turned behind by Arrizabalaga. Chelsea’s own record signing Romelu Lukaku has had a similar underwhelming impact to Grealish. The Belgian started for the fourth consecutive game since being dropped for a crucial clash against Liver-
pool earlier in the month for voicing his unhappiness at Stamford Bridge to Italian media. Lukaku also had a huge chance to silence his critics early in the second half when he was picked out by Kovacic, but Ederson raced from his goal and made a fine save to low to his right. Chelsea’s title challenge has faltered since losing the threat of wing-backs Ben Chilwell and Reece James to long-term injuries. Chilwell’s understudy

PUNE, JAN 15 (IANS): Tata Open Maharashtra, South Asia’s only ATP Tour tournament, is all set to make a return at Balewadi Stadium, here with its 4th edition and will be played from January 31 to February 6. The prestigious tournament, owned by IMG and operated by RISE Worldwide in India, organised by Maharashtra State Lawn Tennis Association, which couldn’t take place last year due to COVID-19 Pandemic, is one of the oldest tournaments in Indian sporting history. The singles main draw of Tata Open Maharashtra 2022 will begin from February 1 while the qualifying round will be played on January 30 and 31. Like previous seasons, this year’s edition too promises a week packed with exciting tennis action in the presence of some of the most prominent names from the tennis world. With players from across the world fighting for the prestigious title, here are the top 5 singles players to look out for at the upcoming edition.
Marcos Alonso was given a torrid time by Raheem Sterling, but the England international lacked the finishing touch as he pulled a shot just wide after jinking past the Spaniard. A top-of-the-table clash lacked the accompanying atmosphere for most of the match at a subdued Etihad. However, the crowd were brought to their feet by the game’s outstanding moment as De Bruyne delivered what could be the knock out blow in the title race. He held off the challenge of N’Golo Kante to spin onto Joao Cancelo’s pass before picking out the bottom left-hand corner of Arrizabalaga’s net. Chelsea were unable to offer any response as they chased City shadows and could have lost by a more comprehensive scoreline. Phil Foden shot over from Sterling’s cut-back, but one goal was all they needed to tighten their grip on a fourth league title in five years. A Winter Olympic emblem is seen in Chongli, Zhangjiakou, Hebei Province, January 12, 2022.
Here’s how the Games will work. Do athletes have to be vaccinated? Yes, athletes and other participants including team staff and news media need to be fully vaccinated to be allowed in the designated Olympic areas without completing a 21-day quarantine. Those areas will consist of the Olympic Village, game venues, other select spots and dedicated transport. Upon arrival at the airport in Beijing, participants will have their temperatures taken and be tested with throat and nasal swabs.
An Olympics official who recently arrived on site said at a press briefing the process took him 45 minutes, though organizers note times might vary. A bus will then take people to their designated lodging, where they’ll wait up to six hours for test results to clear them to move about in approved areas. Restrictions on movement within that “closed loop” are intended to seal off any potential contact between Olympic participants and the local population. Throat swabs for testing will be required daily for all par-
ticipants. What happens if an athlete tests positive?: In Tokyo, organizers say 33 athletes tested positive during the Games. Of those, 22 were withdrawn from from competition. Even with the tightened precautions in Beijing, experts say some positive tests are likely, especially with omicron in play. Will there be fans?: Spectators from overseas won’t be allowed. As for local fans, Beijing organizers say they’re finalizing rules for their attendance. It’s not clear how the recent outbreaks around China will factor into the decisions. But organizers of the Tokyo Games had also planned to allow some domestic fans, before scrapping the idea because a surge in local cases. The result was surreal scenes of athletes competing in empty stadiums. Even if some fans are allowed in Beijing, their presence will be muted. Everyone is being asked to clap instead of shouting or singing, as had been the plan in Tokyo. Can it work?: Despite the omicron-fueled surge hitting many parts of the world including China, organizers may still be able to pull off the Olympics without as much disruption as some fear.

Kriechmayr wins Switzerland’s classic downhill
Vincent Kriechmayr of Austria in action at the Alpine Skiing FIS Ski World Cup in Wengen, Switzerland, Jan. 15.
WENGEN (SWITZERLAND), JAN 15 (AGENCIES): It is never easy for Switzerland to watch an Austrian downhiller win its signature ski race that is part of the Alpine nation’s culture. It was even harder to take Saturday as Vincent Kriechmayr won the classic Lauberhorn race that Swiss team officials said this week
he should not have been allowed to start. Kriechmayr’s victory in a sun-splashed World Cup downhill beside the Eiger mountain came despite missing midweek training runs that are typically mandatory in skiing’s marquee event. He had been kept in quarantine in Austria after testing positive for COVID-19. He had arrived in Wen-
Clap, don’t chant: China aims for ‘Zero COVID’ Olympics Ludwig wins World Cup luge BEIJING, JAN 15 (AP): Athletes will need to be vaccinated — or face a long quarantine — take tests daily and wear masks when not competing or training. Clapping is OK to cheer on teammates, not chanting. Anyone who tests positive for COVID-19 will be sent into isolation and unable to compete until cleared for discharge. Welcome to the Beijing Olympics, where strict containment measures will aim to create a virus-proof “bubble” for thousands of international visitors at a time when omicron is fueling infections globally. The prevention protocols will be similar to those at the Tokyo Games this summer, but much tighter. That won’t be a stretch in Beijing, with China having maintained a “Zero COVID” policy since early in the pandemic. Still, China’s ability to stick to its zero-tolerance approach nationally is already being tested by the highly transmissible omicron variant, which is more contagious than earlier variants of the virus and better able to evade protection from vaccines. With just weeks to go before the Feb. 4 start of the Games, more than 20 million people in six cities are under lockdown after recent outbreaks.

race, clinches season title
Johannes Ludwig from Germany cheers at the finish line of the men’s single-seater event in Oberhof, Jan.15, 2022.
OBERHOF (GERMANY), JAN 15 (AGENCIES): Johannes Ludwig of Germany clinched his first World Cup men’s overall season championship Saturday, becoming the fourth different slider to win the crown in the last four seasons. Ludwig won the nextto-last race of the season to lead a German sweep of the medals, with Max Langenhan second and Felix Loch third. Austria took the next four spots, led by Nico Gleirscher in fourth and Wolfgang Kindl in fifth. But that wasn’t enough to keep Kindl in the title chase, and he wound up falling 146 points behind Ludwig with one race —
and a maximum of 100 points — remaining. Ludwig’s season title means this is the first time there have been four different World Cup champions in the four seasons between Olympic races. Semen Pavlichenko of Russia won in 2018-19, Roman Repilov of Russia won in 2019-20 and Loch won the title last season. “The importance of the overall World Cup is very, very high,” Ludwig said. “I never had the title in my career.” Tucker West led the Americans with a 19thplace finish. Chris Mazdzer was 21st and Jonny Gustafson was 24th. All three have already qualified for next month’s Beijing Games.
gen late Wednesday, after the two training runs, but was cleared by race officials who insisted Kriechmayr — the reigning world champion in downhill — had not been given special treatment under International Ski Federation (FIS) rules. “For me, it’s not important what the Swiss team is saying. For me, it’s important what the athletes are
saying,” said Kriechmayr, who asked his biggest rivals for approval, including Beat Feuz and Marco Odermatt of Switzerland. “They think it’s a good decision for the athletes. That’s the only important thing for me,” he told The Associated Press. In a fur ther twist, Kriechmayr’s winning run denied Swiss favorite Feuz a record fourth win in the storied race that has been a World Cup fixture since the circuit started 55 years ago. The Lauberhorn race was first run in 1930. The Austrian winner finished 0.34 seconds ahead of runner-up Feuz in the longest race on the World Cup circuit he also won three years ago. The key to victory this time was Kriechmayr’s flawless run through the slower, twisting middle section of the tiring 4.27 kilometer (2 2/3-mile) course. Kriechmayr’s winning time at just over 2 minutes, 26 seconds was 0.44 faster than third-placed Dominik Paris of Italy, who now leads the season-long downhill standings.

Kohli quits Test captaincy, a day Ashes: Eng collapse puts Aus on top in Hobart Virat after series defeat against Proteas Australia leads England by 152 as 17 wickets tumble on Day 2
H O B A R T, J A N 1 5 (AGENCIES): Australia yet again rolled over England in the Ashes for a below-par score of 188 as 17 wickets tumbled against pace on the second day of the fifth test on Saturday. Australia, which was bowled out for 303 before lunch, did not require the offspin of Nathan Lyon to grab a 115-run first-innings lead as captain Pat Cummins led the charge with 4-45 and Mitchell Starc grabbed 3-53. Scott Boland was unlucky after Chris Woakes (36) got twice dropped in the slip cordon to finish with 1-33 and Cameroon Green (1-45) got the wicket of debutant Sam Billings, who made 29. England fast bowlers Stuart Broad and Mark Wood bowled with similar intensity of the Australian pace quartet as the home team stuttered to 37-3 at stumps at the day-night test for an overall lead of 152 with seven wickets in hand. Steve Smith was unbeaten on 17 while nightwatchman Boland braved the barrage of short-pitched

deliveries to stay not out on 3 off 25 balls. David Warner got a pair in a test match when Broad had him caught at point off the third ball and Marnus Labuschagne also fell cheaply for 5 to Woakes before Wood undid Usman Khawaja (11) with a brutal short ball on a day when fast bowlers entirely dominated batters with the pink ball. The endless batting woes of England in the Ashes saw its top order yet again struggle against the seam and swing of Cummins and Starc, who both beat the batsmen outside
the off stump in a superb display of fast bowling. Joe Root (34) and Dawid Malan (35) tried to resurrect the innings with a 49-run third-wicket stand after both openers fell cheaply before dinner break. Rory Burns, recalled for the final test, was runout for a duck while going for a needless run and Travis Head took a sharp catch from Zak Crawley (18) at forward short leg as England reached 34-2 at the dinner break on the second day. But Cummins struck in quick succession after
the break, getting Malan caught behind down the legside and then brought one back sharply to pin down Root leg before wicket. Ben Stokes (4) was brilliantly caught low down at point by Lyon off Starc before Boland could have got two-in-two balls. Ollie Pope (14) got an edge of tall Boland but the very next delivery saw Warner dropping a sitter off Woakes’ thick outside edge. Starc and Cummins, however, ended England’s poor show by sharing the last three wickets before England challenged Aus-
tralia in a tough hour-anda-half. Lyon (31) had earlier scored half of the runs Australia added in the afternoon after resuming at 241-6. Wood (3-115) took two quick wickets of Starc (3) and Cummins (2) but Lyon hit the fast bowler for three sixes and a square driven boundary much to the frustration of England. Alex Carey played onto his stumps from Woakes (2-64) after scoring 24 off 60 balls, but Lyon added 23 runs for the last wicket with Boland (10 not out). Broad wrapped up the innings when he clipped the bail to bowl Lyon and finish with 3-59, but England sorely missed Ollie Robinson (2-24), who had back spasms and couldn’t bowl after delivering eight overs on Day 1. Robinson had Australia on the mat at 12-3 inside the first 10 overs, including an opening spell that removed David Warner and Steve Smith for ducks on Friday, before Head’s second century of the series and an invaluable 74 by Cameron Green rescued Australia’s innings. England has already lost the Ashes after dropping the first three test matches and drawing at Sydney.
CAPE TOWN, JAN 15 (PTI): The inevitable came a bit early as Virat Kohli on Saturday quit as India’s Test captain, saying he did his job with “absolute honesty” and time was right to quit the leadership role. Kohli’s announcement came a day after India suffered an embarrassing Test series defeat against South Africa. Kohli was dealing with one controversy after another as he was recently removed as ODI captain by the BCCI after he decided to step down at Twenty20 captain. His decision to quit as Test skipper has come at a time when his relation with the BCCI is so strained that he preferred to announce his decision on social media. Kohli was appointed Test captain back in 2014 when M S Dhoni stepped down in the middle of the series against Australia. “Every thing has to come to a halt at some stage and for me as Test captain of India, it’s now,” Kohli wrote in a statement which he posted on Twitter, taking everyone by surprise. “ T h e r e h ave b e e n many ups and also some downs along the journey but there has never been lack of effort or lack of belief.” Interestingly, when Kohli had quit T20 captaincy, he had

also posted his message on social media. “It’s been seven years of hard work, toil and relentless perseverance everyday to take the team in the right direction. I have done the job with absolute honesty and left nothing out there,” he wrote in his statement. Kohli led India to the top of world rankings and during his tenure, the team recorded a memorable series win in Australia. He is the third most successful captain in history of Test cricket (who have led in at least 20 Tests) in terms of Test wins behind Steve Waugh (41 wins in 57 games) and Ricky Ponting (48 in 77 games). Kohli has 40 wins in 68 Tests in which he led India. The 33-year-old said that perhaps he is now spent and
no longer able to give 120 percent to the job. “I have always believed in giving my 120 percent in everything I do, and if I can’t do that, I know it’s not the right thing to do. I have absolute clarity in my heart and I cannot be dishonest to my team.” He hasn’t had the best of relationship with BCCI of late but took the opportunity to thank the establishment in his statement. “I want to thank the BCCI for giving me the opportunity to lead my country for such a long period of time and more importantly to all the teammates who bought into the vision, I had for the team from day one and never gave up in any situation,” he said. He didn’t forget to thank Ravi Shastri and MS Dhoni for their contribution. “You guys have made this journey so memorable and beautiful. To Ravi bhai and the support group who were the engine behind this vehicle that moved us upwards in Test cricket consistently, you all have played a massive role in bringing this vision to life.” “Lastly, a big thank you to MS Dhoni who believed in me as a captain and found me to be an able individual who could take Indian cricket forward,” he signed off.

MELBOURNE, JAN 15 (AP): Novak Djokovic was reported to be back in immigration detention Saturday after his legal challenge to avoid being deported from Australia for being unvaccinated for COVID-19 was moved to three judges of a higher court. Murray’s title drought continues with loss in Sydney S Y D N E Y, J A N 1 5 (AGENCIES): Andy Murray’s title drought continues. Murray bid for his first men’s singles championship in more than two years was thwarted by Russia’s Aslan Karatsev in the final of the Sydney Tennis Classic on Saturday. The top-seeded Karatsev cruised to a 6-3, 6-3 victory for his third title on the ATP Tour. Despite the loss, it was Murray’s best week since earning his 46th career singles title in Antwerp in October 2019 and gives him plenty of reasons to be optimistic ahead of the Australian Open, which begins Monday. Murray will face Nikoloz Basilashvili — whom he beat in the round of 16 in this event — in the opening round. “I’d like to thank my team for all of their help this week,” Murray said, via Sky Sports. “First time back in the finals for three years. Badosa will play Ajla Tomljanovic in the first round, while Krejcikova faces Andrea Petkovic. Keys takes title in Adelaide: Madison Keys defeated Coco Gauff in a thrilling three-set women’s semifinal at the WTA tournament in Adelaide. Her title match wasn’t as difficult. Keys cruised to a 6-1, 6-2 victory over another American, Alison Riske, on Saturday to capture her sixth WTA title. Keys’ attention will now turn to the Australian Open, where she faces world No. 12 Sofia Kenin in the first round. On the men’s side, Thanasi Kokkinakis won his first ATP title with a 6-7, 7-6, 6-3 victory over Arthur Rinderknech.
India drops to 5th in WTC standings after Newlands loss
NEW DELHI, JAN 15 (PTI): India’s seven-wicket loss to South Africa in the series-deciding third Test has cost them a top four spot as Virat Kohli and his men slipped to the fifth position in the World Test Championship standings. India, the runners up of the inaugural edition of the WTC, are currently placed fifth in second cycle with a 49.07 percentage of points won (PCT), which is taken into account rather than the points earned. India have played nine Tests in the second cycle of WTC, winning four, losing three and drawing two. They have 53 points, the highest among all teams so far. After the second Test India were in fourth position with 55.21 PCT and South Africa were one slot behind with a PCT of 50. But the win in the Newlands Test has helped South Africa (66.66 PCT) rise to the fourth spot.
that Djokovic was back in detention. He spent four nights confined to a hotel near downtown Melbourne before being released last Monday when he won a court challenge on procedural grounds against his
first visa cancellation. Immigration Minister Alex Hawke on Friday blocked the 34-year-old Serb’s visa, which was originally revoked when he landed at a Melbourne airport on Jan. 5. Deportation from Australia can lead to a threeyear ban on returning to the country, although that may be waived, depending on the circumstances. Djokovic has acknowledged that his travel declaration was incorrect because it failed to indicate that he had been in multiple countries over the two weeks before his arrival in Australia. But the incorrect travel information is not why Hawke decided that deporting Djokovic was in
the public interest. His lawyers filed documents in court on Saturday that revealed Hawke had stated that “Djokovic is perceived by some as a talisman of a community of anti-vaccination sentiment.” Australia is one of the most highly vaccinated populations in the world, with 89% of people aged 16 and older fully inoculated for COVID-19. But the minister said that Djokovic’s presence in Australia may be a risk to the health and “good order” of the Australian public. His presence “may be counterproductive to efforts at vaccination by others in Australia,” the minister said.
Warriors roll to most lopsided win, beat Chicago Bulls 138-96 C H I C AG O, JA N 1 5 (AGENCIES): The Golden State Warriors were in a rut and in need of a breather. They sure got one. Andrew Wiggins scored 21 points, Stephen Curry added 19 and the Warriors rolled to their most lopsided win of the season, dominating the Chicago Bulls 138-96 on Friday night. Ro o k i e Jo n a t h a n Kuminga finished with 25 points and Jordan Poole scored 22. The Warriors broke out of their slump in a huge way, pulling away early after dropping four of five. It was just the sort of easy win they were seeking coming off a lopsided loss at defending champion Milwaukee the previous night. “We came out pretty determined,” Coach Steve Kerr said. “Obviously, they were behind the 8-ball almost immediately when Zach (LaVine) got injured.” The Bulls lost LaVine to a left knee injury in the opening minutes. They got booed off the court trailing 78-47 at halftime and wound up with their worst loss this season. Wiggins scored 20 in the first half and shot 8 of 11 in the game while making three 3-pointers.
