Violence, arson in states over Agnipath scheme Upper age limit for Agnipath scheme raised to 23 yrs NEW DELHI/PATNA/ LU C K N OW, J U N 1 6 (PTI): Trains were set afire, public and police vehicles attacked and personnel injured as protests over ‘Agnipath’ snowballed and swept across several states on Thursday. As the violence spiralled, the gover nment raised the upper age limit to 23 years from 21 years for recruitment under the scheme for the year 2022, without making a reference to the turmoil. “Cognizant of the fact that it has not been possible to undertake the recruitment during the last two years, the government has decided that a one-time waiver shall be granted for the proposed

recruitment cycle for 2022,” a defence ministry spokesperson said, adding the upper-age limit for recruitment under Agnipath has been raised to 23 years. As violent protests against the new recruitment scheme Agnipath raged across several states, the government issued a clarification, asserting that the new model will not only bring in new capabilities to the armed forces but also open up avenues for youth

in the private sector and help them become entrepreneurs with the aid of the financial package they will get upon retirement. With many states in the grip of violence, partisan political voices emerged in favour and against the new recruitment scheme for the defence forces that has set off a firestorm. From Bihar’s Ara to Haryana’s Palwal, from Agra in UP to Gwalior and Indore in BJP-ruled Madhya

Pradesh, hundreds of young aspirants for jobs in the armed forces took to streets, pouring their anger on public and private property. Over 34 trains were cancelled and eight more partially cancelled due to the protests, railway sources said in New Delhi. They said 72 trains were also running late due to the agitation. Army aspirants, most of whom had cleared their medical and physical tests

for recruitment last year, were awaiting the written examination, which has now been cancelled. “We submitted our forms for the recruitment in the Army in February 2020 but the process started a year later due to COVID-19 outbreak. The written test was initially scheduled for April 25 last year but was postponed several times,” Munish Sharma, an army aspirant, said. (Cont’d on p-8)

The NTAGI’s Standing Technical Sub-Committee (STSC), which met on Thursday, also reviewed the findings of a study by the Christian Medical College (CMC) in Vellore on the feasibility of allowing as precaution dose a Covid vaccine different from the one used for primary vaccination. The panel members found a lack of uniformity in results upon mixing of jabs for booster shots and stated that no recommendation for it can be made as of now. The threat of monkeypox and the requirement of vaccination were also discussed in the meeting, the sources said. “However, the members were of the view that a strong surveillance is what is required as of now. No case of monkeypox has been detected in the country till now,” one of the sources told PTI. The panel also reviewed data on Covaxin and Corbevax vaccines for the 6-12 age group. “The members opined that data of Covid burden and mortality among children is not robust enough to take any decision to begin vaccination of those below 12 years,” the source stated.

NEW DELHI, JUN 16 (AGENCIES): The Supreme Court (SC) Thursday said that demolitions can only be carried out in accordance with the law, and not as a retaliatory exercise by the state. It made the observation while issuing notice to the Uttar Pradesh government on petitions challenging bulldozer action at Kanpur and Prayagraj in the aftermath of violence triggered

The procedure must be followed so that a sense prevails among citizens that the rule of law prevails in the country, a vacation bench of justices AS Bopanna and Vikram Nath said. The court was hearing applications filed by Jamiat Ulama-I-Hind — an organisation of Islamic scholars — seeking directions to the state to stop unauthorised demolitions. These fresh applications are part of a writ peti-

Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, who appeared for the UP government, sought to defend the demolitions, contending that they were carried out in accordance with the law after giving prior notice. He was joined by senior advocate Harish Salve, who made an online appearance to argue the matter. Representing the authorities that conducted the demolition drive, Salve denied the petitioners’ alle-

must be done according to procedure. “Everything should look fair, we expect the authorities to act only in accordance with law,” the court said, while granting the UP government three days to explain whether the recent demolitions were in compliance with procedural and municipal laws. The bench stressed on authorities following the rule of law, especially in the wake of media reports sug-

Jamiat Ulama-I-Hind cited other instances of similar demolition drives carried out earlier in UP and Madhya Pradesh where, it alleged, houses of Muslims accused of involvement in some sort of crime, particularly riots, were razed. It had then sought a blanket order from the court to stop all demolition drives, which the SC had turned down. However, the apex court had issued notices on the petition.

H&FW warns against complacency

Correspondent

KOHIMA, JUN 16 (NPN): With several states witnessing spike in Covid-19 cases, Health & Family Welfare (H&FW) principal director Dr K Vikato Kinimi said Nagaland was still safe. He, however, cautioned people not be complacent, but to follow Covid safety guidelines at all times. Addressing the media here on Thursday in the backdrop of the nationwide daily Covid-19 positivity rate of 2.35% and weekly rate of 2.38%, Dr. Kinimi appealed all to follow Covid appropriate behaviour and emphasised on vaccination, which had proved beyond doubt that it impacted the outcome of Covid infection. He said the department has also advised all

the districts to be prepared for any eventuality, adding that the department was fully prepared to handle any Covid wave. Though no new Covid variants had been detected other than the Omicron variants (B1, B2, B4 & B5) in circulation, Kinimi said the department was also monitoring the rise in cases in other states. Vaccination slow: Referring to the ongoing Covid vaccination, state immunisation officer Dr Ritu Thur admitted that the rate of vaccination was slow. He said though about 58% of the adult population and 49% in 15-17 years group had been covered so far, there was slow coverage in 12-14 years category with only about 23% being given the first dosage. Cabinet revokes June 3 notification, claims Azheto

Staff Reporter

DIMAPUR, JUN 16 (NPN): Azheto Zhimomi, MLA, who recently expressed dismay over the cabinet’s flip-flop on district boundary demarcation, Thursday claimed that the state cabinet has decided to revoke June 3 notification concerning the inter-district boundary between Peren and Chümoukedima (erstwhile Dimapur) districts. Speaking to Nagaland Post on the sidelines of an event here, Azheto said the cabinet meeting, which was convened on June 13, 2022,

decided to revoke the June 3 home department notification and take up the December 20, 2021 notification, which placed all villages under Dhansiripar Block under the jurisdiction of the newly created Chümoukedima. It may be noted that on June 8, Western Sumi Hoho had served a seven-day ultimatum on the State government to revoke the June 3, 2022 notification. The Home department, in a notification dated June 3, 2022, notified the inter-district boundary between Peren and Chümoukedima (erstwhile Dimapur) districts.

PNH still in incubation stage, no Prophet Row: IS wing Rio calls on Amit Shah, Sitharaman need for speculations: NSCN (I-M) threatens attacks in India State to get

DIMAPUR, JUN 16 (NPN): NSCN (I-M) has clarified that Pan Naga Hoho (PNH) was still in incubation stage and that no one should give panic reaction. Reacting to public reactions regarding the power of PNH chairman, the group in a statement assured that such subject of critical importance that concerned the Nagas was something that would not be processed in damning hurry, adding that it also did not warrant wild speculation. As conceived by the Central government and discussed and accepted by NSCN (I-M) taking into consideration the necessity to have such an umbrella set-up for the larger unity and welfare of Nagas

living in different regions, when PNH passed through the critical stage of political scrutiny, it would naturally come out in the open, the release stated. However, assuring that PNH did not undermine any democratic political institution as perceived by others, NSCN (I-M) said such widely diffused view was unfounded. Mentioning that the irony of the situation was apparent to everyone and that things were moving too slow, the group assured that when PNH would concretise, it would take into account the social, cultural, literature, identity and interests of the Nagas. Till then the less fuss made about it the better, it added.

NEW DELHI, JUN 16 (IANS): The Islamic State Khorasan Province (ISKP), an affiliate of the terror outfit Islamic State, has released a video threatening attacks in India targeting Hindus in connection with now-expelled BJP spokespersons Nupur Sharma’s remarks against Prophet Muhammad. Earlier, Al-Qaeda in the Indian Subcontinent (AQIS) had threatened to carry out attacks in India in connection with Sharma’s comments. The 10-minute video titled ‘The polytheists are the brothers of the polytheists’ shows Sharma as well as the demolition drive in Delhi’s Jahangirpuri. Independent news handle Khorasan Diary tweeted: “The video features@NupurSharmaBJP, national spokesperson of the @BJP4India and houses of Muslims bulldozed. AGARTALA, JUN 16 (AGENCIES): The Tripura unit of Congress Wednesday protested in front of the local Enforcement Directorate (ED) office for serving a notice and interrogating Congress leader Rahul Gandhi in the National Herald case and said the case was politically motivated. The protesters also locked the ED office from outside and also threw dirt at the office’s signboard to register their protest, reports The New Indian Express. . The protest comes two days after Congress staged a gherao of the local ED office when Gandhi was summoned for interrogation. The party had burnt an effigy of Prime Minister Narendra Modi earlier during the gherao and had alleged misuse of central investigation agencies for political brownie points.

The Congress party Wednesday alleged that the entire episode of charging Rahul Gandhi in the National Herald case is “politically motivated” and an attempt to divert people’s attention from the real issues. Speaking to reporters, Congress leader Sudip Roy Barman said, “This is nothing but to harass and malign him (Rahul Gandhi). Prime Minister Narendra Modi has nothing to show people whereas, Rahul Gandhi is speaking for people’s welfare. So, an attempt was made to divert people’s attention. The entire thing is politically motivated.” Among others, Congress national secretary and Tripura in-charge Szarita Laitphlang and Congress leader Asish Kumar Saha took part in the protest in front of the ED office Wednesday.

Assam Cong leaders detained during protest

Anticipating such a move by the opposition party, the Guwahati Police had already put up a strong contingent of personnel and erected barricades to prevent the protesters from proceeding towards the Raj Bhavan. When the Congress leaders tried to break the barricades and move ahead, police detained dozens of leaders and workers, but later released them, a senior police officer said. A health official informed that all the athletes were tested positive for Covid-19 during the screening process and all of them were asymptomatic. our workers who were just holding a democratic protest. But we are not scared of such tactics,” Borah told reporters when he was being whisked away. The BJP is using all agencies like CBI, ED, and state police as its tool to silence the opposition, which will not sit idle, he claimed. Later, Borah and other senior leaders met Governor Jagdish Mukhi and submitted a memorandum on behalf of the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC). “It is a matter of grave concern and shock that in the 75 years of independent India’s history, a ruling government has initiated action through police force inside the premises of the main opposition party of India - All India Congress Committee’s (AICC) headquarters in New Delhi yesterday,”

it said. The APCC also highlighted a similar incident of “unwarranted” entry of the police inside the premises of Assam Congress Headquarters on GS Road here. “…Police even pushed women members, who were injured in the process. Such action of the law enforcers inside the office premises of Assam Congress is highly condemnable and demands immediate action against the police,” the memorandum said. Slamming the Delhi Police for allegedly entering its national headquarters, the Assam Congress on Wednesday had announced a series of agitations over the next two days across the state. On Friday, protests will take place in front of the DC offices in all districts, Borah had said.

Good governance boosted India’s economic growth: Sonowal

Sarbananda Sonowal TINSUKIA (ASSAM), JUN 16 (PTI): Union minister Sarbananda Sonowal on Thursday asserted that good governance during the eight years of Prime Minister Narendra Modi has boosted India’s social welfare, economic growth and ease of living of its citizens. Interacting with the beneficiaries of Prime Minister’s Ujjwala Yojana and Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana, the minister for shipping, ports, waterways and Ayush said that the people of the country are realising the long-aspired goals of social welfare due to the prime minister’s “dynamic leadership”.

‘’The promise of c h a n ge wa s d e l ive r e d through peace agreements, revolutionary infrastructure development and most importantly adhering to the importance and role of the North East in the cause of nation-building. “We must take this wonderful opportunity provided by Modi-ji and give wings to our hopes and dreams for a peaceful, prosperous and progressive Assam and Northeast”, he said. Attacking the Congress for its alleged misgovernance, Sonowal claimed that North East and Assam suffered tremendously during the six decades of dynastic politics of that party. Altogether 28 projects of air connectivity were completed between 2016-17 and 2021-22 in the region while 15 ongoing projects will be completed by March 2023. The UDAN scheme resulted in the development of 15 operational airports while there were only nine in 2014, he said.

IMPHAL, JUN 16: Manipur Congress workers who held a demonstration in front of Imphal Raj Bhavan on Thursday were confronted the police who used force to disperse them. The state Congress workers led MPCC president K Meghachandra staged a vociferous protest against the repeated summoning of Rahul Gandhi by the Enforcement Directorate in connection with a money laundering case. During the brief demonstration in front of the Raj Bhavan, the Congress workers shouted various slogans against the BJP, alleging the party of misusing the ED to harass the AICC leader. They also displayed placards that read, “BJP, respect the rule of law,” “BJP, don’t convert police into a terrorist force,” “Stop vendetta politics,” “Congress stands for justice,” etc. The demonstrators confronted the police when the latter tried to snatch the placards. The police asked them disperse while alleging that they were staging the demonstration without prior permission from the competent authority. Earlier, hundreds of MPCC workers led by its

president K Meghachandra took out a protest rally on the streets in Imphal. The rally kicked off from Imphal Congress Bhavan and marched towards the Raj Bhavan. From the very beginning, the police attempted to foil the rally. However, they forcibly marched upto the Raj Bhavan from where they were driven away after a brief struggle. Talking to repor ters, MPCC president K Meghachandra said that the BJP in power misused the ED to harass leaders of opposition political parties, particularly the Congress by leveling baseless charges. Repeated summoning of Rahul Gandhi and Sonia Gandhi by the ED was an example. The Modiled BJP government at the Centre is misusing the ED. Prime Minister Nar-

endra Modi was misusing government agencies like the ED as if they were private agencies of the BJP. He strongly charged the Modi-led BJP government for misusing government agencies like ED as a tool to eliminate their political rivals and that the repeated summoning of Rahul Gandhi was nothing but an attempt to arrest AICC leaders in connection with the money laundering case. He alleged that ED officials succumbed to the BJP’s dictatorship while asserting that the country will regress as long as BJP exists. Congress MLA Th Lokeswar said that the Congress staged the demonstration calling the people to awaken and save democracy which is at stake under the BJP government.

Rahul Gandhi on his way to ED office. NEW DELHI, JUNE 16 (IANS): Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has told the Enforcement Directorate (ED) that all the decisions and transactions related to Young India’s (YI) acquisition of Associated Journal Ltd (AJL) were taken by late party leader Motilal Vora. The Gandhi scion, who was grilled for three straight days in connection with the National Herald case, denied having knowledge of any sort of loan taken by YI, according to ED sources. Infact, he was not aware of the accommodation entry of YI, Gandhi is said to have told ED. Gandhi said that the late Vora was engaged in all these sorts of af-

fairs. Vora held 12 per cent stakes in YI, while Rahul and Sonia had 76 per cent stakes. “Gandhi said he had no knowledge of YI-AJL deal as Vora was looking after it,” the sources claimed. Rahul Gandhi was taking time to review his statements hence his questioning was taking more time. As per the sources, Gandhis are major beneficiaries in the whole deal. Earlier, Pawan Bansal and Mallikarjuna Kharge were questioned by the central agency. Since Vora has passed away, the needle of suspicion pointed towards the Gandhis. Sonia Gandhi is scheduled to join the investigation on June 23.

Cong seeks action against ED officials over ‘selective leaks’

NEW DELHI, JUN 16 (PTI): The Congress has sought action against Enforcement Directorate officials who “selectively leaked” to some media houses information related to Rahul Gandhi’s questioning, as the party also served a legal notice on three Union ministers over the issue. In the notice to Home Minister Amit Shah, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman and Law Minister Kiren Rijiju, the Congress MP and legal cell head Vivek Tankha has asked them to stop using the ED as a tool to settle political scores, and desist from “spreading false narratives” about the former Congress chief. The notice comes in the wake of media reports claiming that Gandhi has told the ED that he has no knowledge about the dealings of Young India with

Ajay Maken, P Chidambaram and Sachin Pilot during a party briefing, at AICC headquarters in New Delhi. (PTI) Associated Journals, which publishes the National Herald, and that it was done by the late party treasurer Motilal Vora. The notice also calls upon the ministers to fix responsibility on such officers of the Enforcement Directorate who have resorted to such “illegalities”. “This is a judicial proceeding and selective leaks by the ED to malign Rahul Gandhi’s image is a criminal offence and an attempt to

interfere with an ongoing judicial proceeding which is a second crime,” Congress chief spokesperson Randeep Surjewala said. “We have demanded that the responsibility of the ED officers be fixed and if not, the Congress party will be constrained to prosecute ED officers for fixation of officers and crimes by them,” he told PTI. The notice asks them to ensure the Enforcement Directorate immediately

stops spreading “false narratives about Rahul Gandhi for ulterior political motives and as a tool to settle political scores”. “I also call upon you (the ministers) to fix responsibility on such officer of the Enforcement Directorate who has resorted to such illegalities by causing the leaks,” Tankha said in his notice. Explaining why he served the legal notice on the ministers, Tankha said the ED is clearly acting at the “behest of its political masters” and is carrying out political vendetta against Rahul Gandhi. “It is appropriate (then) that this letter be addressed to the finance minister, the minister of law and the home minister jointly,” he said. “It is deplorable that the Enforcement Directorate is being used as a tool of political vendetta against Rahul Gandhi, the former

president of the Congress, which happens to the principal opposition party to the BJP,” the notice said. He said the Congress and its leader Rahul Gandhi will never bow down to this kind of abuse of process and threats, and will fight to protect the constitution and the freedoms enshrined in it till the last breath. Political battles have to be fought between political parties and using the Enforcement Directorate to settle political scores and harass the opposition leadership is an assault on the Constitution, Tankha said in his notice. The entire country knows that Rahul Gandhi is being summoned at this juncture as he is the most vociferous and credible voice against the BJP, he noted, adding that “the case that has been foisted is utterly hopeless and has no basis in law”.

Earlier, mild tension prevailed near Raj Bhavan, after scores of Congress leaders and workers held a protest against the grilling of Rahul Gandhi. As a large number of Congress leaders and party workers marched towards the Raj Bhavan in an attempt to lay siege to it as part of a “Chalo Raj Bhavan” call given by Congress’ Telangana unit, police foiled their attempts and dispersed them even as the party said some of its leaders were injured due to lathi charge by police.

NEW DELHI, JUN 16 (PTI): India and the ASEAN on Thursday agreed to work towards a comprehensive strategic partnership that is meaningful, substantive and mutually-beneficial by further enhancing their strategic ties. This was stated in a statement by External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar and his Singaporean counterpart Vivian Balakrishnan at the India-ASEAN foreign ministerial meeting being hosted by New Delhi to mark the 30th anniversary of its relations with the 10-nation grouping. Jaishankar and Balakrishnan are the co-chairs of the two-day meeting that began on Thursday. It is understood that the meeting discussed the situation in the South China Sea, a resource-rich region that has been witnessing increasing Chinese muscleflexing. In their statement, the co-chairs said the meeting reaffirmed commitment to multilateralism founded on the principles of international laws including the Charter of the United Nations, the 1982 UN Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) and other relevant UN treaties and conventions. NEW DELHI, JUN 16 (PTI): Aspirational districts should be ‘inspirational districts’ of India, and the Aspirational District Programme should be extended to block and city levels, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on Thursday. Aspirational Districts Programme (ADP) launched in 2018 aims to transform 112 districts that have shown relatively lesser progress in key social areas. “Lauding the success of the Aspirational Districts Programme, the Prime Minister said the government should strive to make these the ‘inspirational districts’ of India and extend the programme to the block and city levels,” an official statement said quoting Modi. The prime minister was chairing the three-day national conference of chief secretaries, which is currently underway at Dharamshala, Himachal Pradesh. The conference began on June 15. The statement said the prime minister stressed that India’s best, young officers should be posted to the aspirational districts to bring

HYDERABAD, JUN 16 (PTI): Former Union Minister and senior Congress leader Renuka Chowdhury was on Thursday seen allegedly grabbing the collar of a police official during a protest here by the party against the grilling of top party leader Rahul Gandhi by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in connection with a money-laundering case pertaining to the National Herald-AJL deal. A video showing Chowdhury “arguing” with police officials who were trying to prevent her from going to Raj Bhavan and later she allegedly holding the collar of a police official, went viral. She was immediately taken away by women police personnel. Later, Chowdhury told TV channels that she had no intention of humiliating the police official and she merely caught hold of his shoulder as she was about to fall when being pushed. “We know how to respect the uniform. Police also have to learn to respect women. I have no intention of hitting policemen. That is not my intention at all. But I was being manhandled. I was losing my balance and

Land of encroachments

K

ohima has one among the oldest health institutions of the north east- Kohima, civil hospital, Naga Hospital Kohima and presently Naga Hospital Authority Kohima(NHAK)- which was started as a ten-bedded dispensary in 1905-06. It is probably the second oldest institute after the Berry White Dispensary in Dibrugarh in 1870 which later became Berry White Medical College in 1900. The dispensary was upgraded to a 60-bedded hospital and named as Kohima civil hospital which was located where the Union Baptist Church stands today. During the war the hospital was badly damaged and had to be shifted to Mission Compound with number of beds reduced to 50. In 1945, the British government of India set aside 50 additional beds in January 1945 to Assam Relief Military Hospital as “Naga Ward” in recognition of the gallant and outstanding services rendered by Nagas to the Allied cause in the Battle of Kohima. Construction for the hospital began in 1946 at the present plot donated by T.Khel and in June 1949 the Kohima Civil Hospital was renamed as ‘Naga Hospital Kohima’. The Hospital has been instrumental in providing efficient health care services to the new state since 1963 and remained among the premier hospital in Nagaland. In 2003 the Naga Hospital Kohima was again renamed as Naga Hospital Authority Kohima(NHAK) and conferred an autonomous status by the State government vide the Naga Hospital Authority Bill, 2003 with the aim of developing it into a centre of excellence for providing the best healthcare facility at an affordable rate to the people. The NHAK has one of the best and well maintained 30-bedICU/ CCU, including 10-bed SNCU, which can match such facilities provided by any reputed medical college in the country. The doctors and technical staff at NHAK are second to none when it comes to performance. It may seem that destiny has been good to the Naga Hospital Authority Kohima(NHAK) as it was in 2014 fated to become a medical college after upgradation of its beds and facilities. While development has been going on through the decades, the entire around 12.7 acre campus of NHAK has also been experiencing negative development through systemic encroachments. The encroachers have constructed some hilltype structures on vacant places while another section comprising of numerous shops and pharmacies, have come up from the national highway below, to the compound of the main entrance to the NHAK. The shops and pharmacies and food stalls are around the perimeter of the front of the NHAK and have narrowed the space for vehicle parking as well as movement of ambulances to the emergency wards. This newspaper had published a front-paged report on the encroachment including one regarding the dilapidated Isolation ward for Under Trial Prisoners(UTP) and where male and female police personnel on duty had to share a room. The NHAK’s fate could be sealed if such matters are not resolved since the medical college is supposed to begin its academic year by 2023. Of course, the state government has constructed the academic office at Phriebagie some 6.5 Kms away and the 400-bedded facility there would eventually render NHAK only a vestigial part. Thus, the sobriquet Land of Festivals may also include Land of Encroachment which have grounded many projects meant for people.

DailyDevotion “Will You Lay Down Your Life?”

Greater love has no one than this, than to lay down one’s life for his friends….I have called you friends… —John 15:13, 15

Jesus does not ask me to die for Him, but to lay down my life for Him. Peter said to the Lord, “I will lay down my life for Your sake,” and he meant it (John 13:37). He had a magnificent sense of the heroic. For us to be incapable of making this same statement Peter made would be a bad thing— our sense of duty is only fully realized through our sense of heroism. Has the Lord ever asked you, “Will you lay down your life for My sake?” (John 13:38). It is much easier to die than to lay down your life day in and day out with the sense of the high calling of God. We are not made for the bright-shining moments of life, but we have to walk in the light of them in our everyday ways. There was only one bright-shining moment in the life of Jesus, and that was on the Mount of Transfiguration. It was there that He emptied Himself of His glory for the second time, and then came down into the demon-possessed valley (seeMark 9:1-29). For thirty-three years Jesus laid down His life to do the will of His Father. “By this we know love, because He laid down His life for us. And we also ought to lay down our lives for the brethren” (1 John 3:16). Yet it is contrary to our human nature to do so. If I am a friend of Jesus, I must deliberately and carefully lay down my life for Him. It is a difficult thing to do, and thank God that it is. Salvation is easy for us, because it cost God so much. But the exhibiting of salvation in my life is difficult. God saves a person, fills him with the Holy Spirit, and then says, in effect, “Now you work it out in your life, and be faithful to Me, even though the nature of everything around you is to cause you to be unfaithful.” And Jesus says to us, “…I have called you friends….” Remain faithful to your Friend, and remember that His honor is at stake in your bodily life.

Post-mortem

Bulldozer politics dents the rule of law

I

f an individual citizen violates law, the state is supposed to curb it and ensure justice. What if the state itself resorts to illegality? Where can the citizens go to get justice? These questions were posed prominently during the recent handling of the protests by Muslims in response to reckless public comments against Prophet Mohammad by BJP spokesperson Nupur Sharma. Even before such comments on a TV show evoked sharp international reaction, protests first broke out in Kanpur after prayers in a mosque on June 3, 2022. Again, in the backdrop of India’s growing diplomatic alienation on this issue, there was another wave of protests after Friday prayers by minorities, on June 10. Protests and some instances of stone-throwing met with police crackdown in six districts of Uttar Pradesh, with intense protests in Prayagraj, Lucknow and Saharanpur. Similar protests the same day in Jharkhand witnessed police firing, in which two protestors were killed. Kolkata was literally burning that day over the same issue. It looks like while the Kanpur protests were spontaneous on an emotive issue, the second wave appeared to be an organised and concerted one. Patently illegal move Having pioneered the “bulldozer politics,” of unleashing machines to demolish the houses of alleged “troublemakers”, the UP government promptly sent the bulldozers on June 11, 2022, to demolish the houses of alleged Muslim “masterminds” behind the June 3 protests in Kanpur. Likewise, the house of Mohammad Javed, a prominent leader of the Welfare Party in Prayagraj, was also demolished on June 12. UP Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath himself had gone on record saying, “I have sent the bulldozers for repair. Once they start working again after March 10, all those who are hot-headed now will be silenced on their own.” PUCL activists in Prayagraj argue that bulldozer demolition is pa-

T

tently illegal as there is no place for that in law. At best, Sections 81 to 84 CrPC provide for attachment of property of criminals who are absconding. There too the procedure for that has been laid down in Schedule V of CrPC which requires the law enforcement authorities to make a public proclamation first and subsequently to obtain a court order to attach and sell the property of the absconder. Otherwise, the right to property is inviolable and is a fundamental right under the Constitution and no law permits razing down of the property of anyone no matter how serious is the charge of criminality. Recently, the Lucknow bench of the Allahabad High Court reaffirmed that in another bulldozing case. PUCL leader in Prayagraj Seema Azad told The Federal, “On most people, FIRs under Sections 307 (attempt to murder), 120B (criminal conspiracy to commit an offence punishable with death), and 153A (absconding, within 24 hours after protests) have been filed, which is ridiculous. It is really strange that the very administration which has hitherto been using Javed’s house for holding peace meetings and inter-community harmony gatherings chose to demolish that very house under orders from above. Many of us were shocked at Javed being labelled the mastermind of the protests.” M o r e ove r, i n t h e Prayagraj case, the bulldozed house was registered in the name of Mohammad Javed’s wife, having been gifted to her by her father, and did not belong to Javed, pointed out another PUCL leader. Since Javed’s wife was in no way involved in any of the demonstrations, this rash act was nothing but bulldozing of the law. She and her younger daughter were picked up and held in illegal custody for a day before they were released even without producing them in court. No wonder, bulldozer politics poses larger con-

cerns about the state of rule of law and even for the fate of democracy in India. To add fuel to the fire, local newspapers and TV channels seem elated and have already started a vicious slander campaign against Javed and his family. Headlines are screaming that the “mastermind” has been booked and his elder daughter Afreen, another “mastermind” is on the radar. Democracies are based on the rule of law. There may be aberrations for a while and some personnel in governing the state too might take law into their hands and violate it. But the founding fathers of our Constitution have ensured adequate selfcorrecting devices within the constitutional scheme of things. Often, there is an inbuilt age-old tension between law and politics. But then the mechanisms of resolving that are also inbuilt. Democracy operates through the three state institutions of the executive, legislature, and judiciary acting as checksand-balances against each other. While legislature is supposed to be supreme, judiciary is the final arbiter having the last word on whether the due process of law has been abided by or not. Role of judiciary Some are disappointed that the Allahabad High Court did not act in time by not taking suo moto cognition of such illegal demolitions. Maybe the courts are a bit weary of being seen as intervening in day-to-day governance locked in perpetual conflict with the executive. Perhaps, the judiciary wants to give a long rope to the errant rulers. We have seen that the free market laissez-faire economy often leads to violations of rule of law — be it 3G or the Rafale deal. The same is true even of the heat of bitterly competitive electoral democracy where there are manageable transgressions of rule of law. But what we see in India, especially in Uttar Pradesh now, is an add-on of the vestiges of mediaeval Oriental Despotism enabling overzealous

rulers to corrode the rule of law and even trample upon the fundamental rights of citizens. Strangely, under the soft state milieu of India, the law gave ample space to a mathadheesh (chief of a religious mutt) to float a Hindu Yuva Vahini that indulged in plain lawlessness in the days of yore, to a man who was facing murder charges in the courts, to ascend to power as Chief Minister. The same law even offers large enough latitude for him to continue to rule in defiance of law with the same impunity blurring the difference between administering a feudalized religious mutt as his fiefdom and democratically governing a state as per rule of law. Ironically, the same strongman now pitches for autocratic rule often overriding the same law and the judiciary! Constitutionalism seems to be under trial! Some secular activists try to explain the above phenomenon in terms of majoritarian predilections of a section of the judiciary itself. That might not be entirely true. After all, the current chief ministerial incumbent in Uttar Pradesh is the one who perhaps faced maximum strictures from the higher judiciary. Perhaps, his is the case where the Allahabad High Court overturned the maximum number of executive decisions. Still, defying the judiciary comes as a child’s play for this CM. The problem is also the absence of proper checks-and-balances within the ruling party. The all-India leaderships of the BJP or RSS, the guiding parent body, do not seem to be having enough maturity to rein him in. Rather they also probably egg him on and get carried away in the same zeal of lawlessness. It is notewor thy that the RSS leader who asked their ranks why they look for Shivlings in every mosque to moderate a dangerously emerging communal polarisation over hundreds of religious shrines carefully chooses to

maintain a studied silence over bulldozer politics of governments under this outfit’s influence. But they can indulge in such indifference or even extend their wink of approval only at their own peril. International backlash The unprecedentedly adverse international diplomatic backlash was not entirely due to intemperate comments of a lowly spokesperson in the BJP hierarchy. It appears to be a measured and calculatedly concerted response coming from India’s friends and diplomatic detractors alike. The inter national opinion against India’s denominational authoritarian excesses has been building up for quite a while. From the New York Times to even the conservative Washington Post, from the left-liberal Telegraph UK to the otherwise dour Der Spiegel of Germany, many have carried editorials or op-eds against the Indian government’s transgression of minority rights in recent times. Foreign policy establishments of not only Islamic countries but even of developed liberal democracies have been closely tracking developments from the controversial Kashmir decisions to CAA protests, from Shaheen Bagh to the anti-hijab crackdown, from Jahangirpuris, to the mysterious cropping up of Shivlings in mosques, and now the bulldozer politics, with due concern about the fate of liberty and minority rights in the largest democracy in the world. The rulers can put up a brave face for a while in the context of such an international backlash. But it can have larger consequences than mere statements of condemnation. Speculation is already rife about the fate of Indian expatriate workers in the Gulf region and the remittance economy that is sustained by them. Moreover, which fund manager would choose to invest in a communally riven and tense Uttar Pradesh? The state might appear to be going strong for a while. But there is a

lurking danger. But what if some misguided youth are pushed beyond a point and hundreds of them opt for taking up arms? There can be any number of adventurers and militant outfits which can mislead them in that direction. Can bulldozers stop terror acts? As Lalu Prasad pointed out, it will be a civil war-like situation. Political moderation is the best defence against terror acts which can deprive terrorism of any legitimacy or justification; whereas state illegality and excesses can only work in the opposite direction. A section of the democratic opinion is also weary of Muslim youth resorting to senseless violence at this juncture. Senior journalist and editor of Hindi NewsClick Mukul Saral told The Federal: “We should stick to political and legal means of resolving issues and do it in a peaceful manner as in Shaheen Bagh or the Kisan movement instead of taking to streets on emotive issues in a violent manner. Moreover, minorities should give priority to addressing their educational, social, and economic conditions rather than taking to the streets on emotive religious issues.” More importantly, the state too should be principled in its handling of protests. Just as a woman cannot be part pregnant, a state — or, even a government, in specific — cannot be partly constitutional. Some organs of the government cannot take liberty with the law. The perceived gains for the rulers from such transgressions can only be temporary. The medium- and long-term consequences of such state illegality can be ominous. If anything, in the ultimate analysis, the courts will strike back. More importantly, a large minority running into a couple of hundreds of millions cannot be subdued with a few bulldozers. It is high time better sense prevailed among the ruling establishment. B Sivaraman is a senior journalist based in Allahabad (As published in The Federal)

he pension expenditure on six lakh defence widows and 20 lakh veterans is being seen as a burden, even as the Central Government is paying pension to 52 lakh Central civilian pensioners. In the financial year 2022-23, the defence budget stands at Rs 5.25 lakh crore, of which Rs 1.19 lakh crore or 22 per cent is earmarked for pensions. The defence pension budget includes the expenditure on six lakh current defence civilian pensioners, who retire at the age of 60 years vis-à-vis the much shorter retirement ages of the uniformed personnel, and draw much higher pensions than the latter. By excluding the defence pension expenditure on civilian employees, the pension budget of the uniformed personnel works out to approximately Rs 92,000 crore (18 per cent of the current defence budget, with the defence budget being at a low of 2 per cent of the GDP as against 3 per cent recommended consistently by various committees of Parliament). Rajnath Singh pays tributes to ‘heroes of Galwan’

Colonel Bikumalla Santosh Babu, the commanding officer of the 16 Bihar regiment, had led from the front against the Chinese aggression near Patrolling Point 14 in Galwan Valley. I n N ove m b e r l a s t year, he was posthumously awarded Mahavir Chakra, the second-highest military award for acts of gallantry

in the presence of the enemy. Months after the deadly confrontation, the Army built a memorial for the ‘Gallants of Galwan’ at Post 120 in eastern Ladakh. The memorial mentioned their heroics under operation ‘Snow Leopard’ and the way they evicted the PLA troops from the area while inflicting “heavy casualties” on them. The names of the 20 Army personnel were also inscribed on the National War Memorial in Delhi in January last year.

CHANDIGARH, JUNE 16 (IANS): A small clue seized from a vehicle used in the crime helped Punjab Police unveil a trail of events related to the sensational murder of Punjabi singer Shubhdeep Singh, popularly known as Sidhu Moosewala, that led to the arrest of 10 people, including main conspirator Lawrence Bishnoi, investigators said on Thursday. The police have identified four shooters behind the crime, an official statement said. Moosewala, who left his house at around 5 p.m. on May 29 along with two persons -- Gurwinder Singh and Gurpreet Singh (cousin) -- was shot dead by unidentified people. Acting swiftly, Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann constituted a Special Investigation Team (SIT) under the supervision of the ADGP (Anti-Gangster Task ForceAGTF) to bring his killers to justice. One of the important leads in the case was the recovery of a receipt of May 25 of a petrol pump in Fatehabad in Haryana. It was recovered from a Balero car, which is believed to be used in the crime. It was later found abandoned near Khayala village, some 13 km from the crime scene, said the ADGP AGTF, adding a police team was sent to the petrol station in Fatehabad to gather the

Similarly, the owner of the vehicle was traced. The police have recovered all vehicles, including Mahindra Bolero, Toyota Corolla, and White Alto car, used in the crime. The assailants in Toyota Corolla had stopped and snatched a White Alto car at gunpoint, leaving behind Toyota Corolla, which got damaged during the incident and escaped towards Khara Barnala village followed by the white Bolero Jeep. The white Alto was also found abandoned on May 30 near Dharamkot in Moga district and the route taken by the accused was identified from the CCTV footage. Apart from arresting gangster Lawrence Bishnoi, who was brought on pro-

duction warrant from Tihar Jail in Delhi to Punjab, the other nine arrested accused have been identified as Charanjit Singh of Bathinda; Sandeep Singh alias Kekda of Sirsa, Manpreet Singh of Talwandi Sabo in Bathinda; Manpreet Bhau of Faridkot; Saraj Mintu of Amritsar; Prabhdeep Sidhu of Haryana; Monu Dagar of Sonipat; and Pawan Bishnoi and Naseeb, both residents of Fatehabad. They have been arrested for hatching conspiracy, providing logistic support, conducting recce and harbouring the shooters. The ADGP said the registration number of the Corolla vehicle was found to be genuine and the owner was identified. However, the person on whose name an affidavit of purchase was recovered was not the actual owner but had given his Aadhaar card to Manpreet Manna, the gangster linked to Goldy Brar, who is lodged in Ferozepur jail.

NEW DELHI, JUN 16 (IANS): Shares of Hindustan Motors have swum against the tide in the past one month and managed to accumulate healthy returns for its investors. The shares of the automobile company more than doubled in the past 30 days. To be precise, it rose 103 per cent. Notably, it reportedly hit upper circuits for 15 consecutive sessions in a row. At 2.28 pm, the shares were at Rs 23, as against Rs 11 same time previous month. During the same period, domestic benchmark indices declined about 5 per cent over concerns of high inflation as well as inflationary expectations and the subsequent raise in policy rates, which in turn may hurt growth.

said the stated objective of savings on the pension bill is a weak argument and has not been established beyond doubt. The Left parties demanded that the scheme be scrapped and be taken up in Parliament for discussion, alleging that it does a “disservice” to India’s national interests. Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal appealed to the central government to give the youth the chance to serve the country throughout their life, not just four years. BSP supremo Mayawati hit out at the Union government over the scheme, terming it “unfair towards rural youth”. She urged the Centre to “reconsider” its decision immediately. Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas) chief, Chirag Paswan, said he has written to the defence minister seeking reconsideration of the scheme. BJP Lok Sabha member Varun Gandhi said a government is elected for five years then why are youths being given four years to serve the nation.

Rahul Gandhi urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to listen to the voice of unemployed youths and not take ‘agnipareeksha’ (trial by fire) of their patience by making them walk on ‘Agnipath’, Samajwadi Party president Akhilesh Yadav called the move “negligent” and potentially “fatal” for the country’s future. Significantly, BJP ally JD(U) sought a rethink on the scheme. “…the central government should immediately reconsider the Agniveer scheme because this decision is also related to the defence and security of the country,” JD(U) president Rajiv Ranjan Singh said in a tweet in Hindi. Congress urged the government to keep the scheme in abeyance, hold wide consultations with serving and retired officers, and address the issues of quality, efficiency and economy without compromising on any of the three considerations. As a corrective measure, the article suggested that the state governments must restrict their revenue expenses by cutting down expenditure on non-merit goods in the near term. In the medium term, it added the states need to put efforts towards stabilising debt levels. It also recommended large scale reforms in power distribution sector would enable the discoms (power distribution companies) to reduce losses and make them financially sustainable and operationally efficient. In the long term, increasing the share of capital outlays in the total expenditure will help create longterm assets, generate revenue and boost operational efficiency. Alongside, state governments need to conduct fiscal risk analyses and stress test their debt profiles regularly to be able to put in place provisioning and other specific risk mitigation strategies to manage fiscal risks efficiently.

MUMBAI,JUN 16 (PTI): Referring to economic crisis in Sri Lanka, a Reserve Bank article on Thursday said states are showing warning signs of building stress, and the 5 most indebted ones -- Punjab, Rajasthan, Bihar, Kerala and West Bengal -- need to take corrective measures by cutting down expenditure on non-merit goods. State finances are vulnerable to a variety of unexpected shocks that might alter their fiscal outcomes, causing slippages relative to their budgets and expectations, said the RBI article prepared by a team of economist under the guidance of deputy governor Michael Debabrata Patra. “The recent economic crisis in neighbouring Sri Lanka is a reminder of the critical importance of public debt sustainability. provide an update later. Meanwhile, the Opposition parties renewed their partygate attack on the government over this latest development. “The Prime Minister has now driven both of his own handpicked ethics advisers to resign in despair. If even they can’t defend his conduct in office, how can anyone believe he is fit to govern,” said Labour’s Deputy Leader Angela Rayner. “When both of Boris Johnson’s own ethics advisers have quit, it is obvious that he is the one who needs to go,” questioned Liberal Democrat chief whip Wendy Chamberlain. Last month, in an annual report on ministerial interests, Geidt had noted that a “legitimate question” has arisen as to the fixed penalty notice issued by the Metropolitan Police over a COVID lockdownbreaching birthday party at Downing Street in June 2020. His report called on Johnson to set out his “case in public”.

LONDON, JUN 16 (PTI): British Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s independent ethics adviser has resigned from his post as Independent Adviser on Ministers’ Interests in the wake of the partygate scandal of COVID lockdown-breaching parties at Downing Street. Lord Christopher Geidt, the Independent Adviser on Ministers’ Interests who reported directly to the Prime Minister in an advisory capacity, handed in his resignation to Johnson on Wednesday evening. His resignation statement does not specify a reason for his departure and Downing Street is yet to elaborate on that. “With regret, I feel that it is right that I am resigning from my post as Independent Adviser on Ministers’ Interests,” Geidt said in a brief statement. The resignation has taken Downing Street by surprise and follows the 2020 exit of Sir Alex Allan, his predecessor in the role, and the resignation of the British Prime Minister’s

A number of other European leaders have already made the long trip overland to show solidarity with a nation under attack, even in times when the fighting raged closer to the capital than it does now. On Thursday, NATO defense ministers met in Brussels to consider more military aid for Ukraine, and many hoped in Ukraine that the leaders’ visit could mark a turning point by opening the way to sig-

President Klaus Iohannis of Romania - which borders Ukraine and has been a key destination for Ukrainian refugees - arrived on a separate train. After viewing Irpin, he wrote on Twitter that there are “no words to describe the unimaginable human tragedy and horrible destruction” and called for “all Russian perpetrators to be held responsible by the international criminal justice” system. The Russian forces are pressing their offensive in the eastern Donbas region, slowly but steadily gaining ground on the badly outmanned and outgunned Ukrainian forces, who are pleading for more arms from Western allies. Several air raid sirens rang out while the European leaders were in their hotel preparing for the rest of their visit, and Kyiv authorities urged people to seek shelter. Such alerts are a frequent occurrence.

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, carries heavy symbolic weight since the three Western European powers have faced criticism for continuing to engage with Russian President Vladimir Putin - and failing to provide Ukraine with the scale of weaponry that it has said is necessary to fend off the Russians. Western arms were key to Ukraine’s surprising success in preventing the Russians from taking the capital - but officials have said much more will be needed if they are to drive

nificant new arms supplies - particularly as the officials surveyed the war’s devastation. Ahead of the meeting with Zelenskyy, the leader German Chancellor Olaf Scholz observed that officials must keep the destruction in mind in all their decisions. “Innocent civilians have been hit, houses have been destroyed; a whole town has been destroyed in which there was no military infrastructure at all,” Scholz said. “And that says a great deal about the brutality of the Russian war of aggression, which is simply out for destruction and conquest. We must bear that in mind in everything that we decide.” Italian Premier Mario Draghi said during the tour of Irpin that Ukraine’s backers will rebuild “everything” with European help. “They destroyed the nurseries, the playgrounds, and everything will be rebuilt,” Draghi said. IRPIN (UKRAINE), JUN 16 (AP): Four European leaders made a high-profile visit to show their support for Ukraine on Thursday, denouncing the brutality of the Russian invasion as they surveyed the ruins of a Kyiv suburb that was the scene of intense fighting early in the war and where many civilians were killed. After arriving in Kyiv to the sound of air raid sirens, the leaders of France, Germany, Italy and Romania headed to Irpin, which was seized and briefly held by Russian troops along with other areas near the capital. Mass graves have been unearthed in the area, most notably in Bucha, and French President Emmanuel Macron decried the massacres and said there were signs of war crimes. He denounced the “barbarism” of the attacks that devastated Irpin, and praised the courage of its residents and others in the region who helped thwart Russia’s attempt to overrun the capital. ‘Enemy of the people’ Noel Gallagher banned from China

O

asis legend Noel Gallagher was deemed an “enemy of the people” and has been banned from setting foot in China. The 55-year-old singer has been banned from China after upsetting authorities in 1997 when he joined the likes of U2, Radiohead, Alanis Morissette, Foo Fighters and Beastie Boys for performing at a two-day Tibetan Freedom Concert in New York, reports femalefirst. co.uk. Noel only found out about his ban in 2009 when his then-band Oasis were due to tour Beijing and Shanghai and he was told he wouldn’t be welcome as he was “unsuitable” to perform. He is quoted by the Daily Star newspaper as saying: “I only found out I was banned when Oasis got invited to go to China a good 20 years ago. We’d agreed to go and all the paperwork came and you

had to send through a list of your songs and the Chinese government sent you back a list of songs that weren’t appropriate and we’d agreed to do all that. “About a month before we were about to leave I got a letter saying you lot can come but you can’t because of this thing you did for the Tibetan people. I’d forgot I’d even done it. “The reason that they didn’t want you there was in case you started spouting off some pro-Tibetan s***. I was like, ‘Mate, I’m not even interested in Tibet, I’m not a**** just let me go.’ “They we’re like no. I’ve got a letter somewhere from the Minister of The Interior saying, ‘You are an enemy of the people’ .or something like that. The rest were invited with open arms.” To m a k e m a t t e r s worse, the ‘Holy Mountain’ hitmaker didn’t even enjoy being part of the concert. (IANS)

Ranji Trophy Semis: Mumbai dominates UP Halle Open: Kyrgios beats Tsitsipas

BENGALURU, JUN 16 (IANS): Mumbai continued their domination over Uttar Pradesh while Madhya Pradesh were also in a strong position against Bengal on the third day of their respective Ranji Trophy semifinal matches, here on Thursday. Mumbai were 133/1 in their second innings at stumps on Day, leading UP by 346 runs. Skipper Prithvi Shaw led from the front and scored 64 in 71 balls. He scored 64 off the 66 runs in the opening stand with his partner Yashasvi Jaiswal staying put on 0 right through. BERLIN, JUN 16 (IANS): Thomas Muller is known for his refreshing straightforwardness. No matter if there is a reason to celebrate or setbacks need to be dealt with, the Bavarian footballer likes to put things bluntly. Statistics don’t seem to bother the Bayern striker overwhelmingly after his side crushed the 2020 European Champion Italy 5-2 in a Nations League encounter. Just 161 days ahead of the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar, Germany might have secured the highest victory against Italy in 83 years. turned things to better for a German team seeking stability. Muller talked about a pleasant evening in the Moenchengladbach arena but neglected any informative value. “Most important is to enter our vacation with a good feeling after a stressful season and recover,” the forward said. “It doesn’t mean a lot regarding the World Cup despite everyone ask-

ing for it.” Germany managed to remain unbeaten in 13 games under coach Hansi Flick and accomplished their mission to beat one of football’s great nations, reports Xinhua. Despite coach Hansi Flick having found his bearing axis in Manuel Neuer, Antonio Rudiger, Kimmich, and Muller, the 2014 World Champion are far from what you call a tournament favourite. “We know we can beat everyone on a good day, but things can still go in both directions. The Nations League games don’t deliver answers but only hints,” Muller said. Germany remain a magic bag regarding the Qatar tournament in the striker’s opinion.

Premier League to start on August 5; Prannoy storms into Indonesia Open quarters Crystal Palace to face Arsenal in opener

J A K A RTA , J U N 1 6 (PTI): One of the heroes of India’s epic Thomas Cup triumph, HS Prannoy continued his rich vein of form as he stormed into the quarterfinals of the Indonesia Open Super 1000 tournament with a straight-game win over Hong Kong’s Ng Ka Long Angus here on Thursday. The 29-year-old from Kerala, who is desperately looking to break his five year title drought, dished out another impressive performance to outwit Ng Long 21-11 21-18 in a second round match that lasted 41 minutes. I t wa s P r a n n oy ’s f o u r t h w i n o ve r t h e 27-year-old, who is currently ranked 12th in the world. A former top 10 player, Prannoy will next face either Denmark’s Rasmus Gemke or France’s Brice Leverdez.

HS Prannoy

Among other Indians in the fray, Sameer Verma ended his campaign with a 10-21 13-21 loss to world number five Lee Zii Jia of Malaysia in the second round. This was Sameer’s fifth loss to Lee in seven meetings. Ashwini Ponnappa and N Sikki Reddy also bowed out of the tournament after losing 16-21 1321 to top seeds Chen Qing Chen and Jia Yi Fan of

China in women’s doubles competition. The men’s doubles pairing of MR Arjun and Dhruv Kapila also went down 19-21 15-21 to China’s Liu Yu Chen and Ou Xuan Yi. In the men’s singles contest, it was all Prannoy in the first half of the opening game as he simply dominated the proceedings, grabbing the initiative early to lead 11-3 with a sensational cross court

jump smash. Prannoy was, however, erratic after the interval and his unforced errors allowed Ng Long to collect a few points before the Indian unleashed another cross court smash and made some sound judgements at the baseline to keep moving ahead. Prannoy’s movement was smooth as he mixed up the shots and varied the speed well and with his opponent committing errors, he had no issues in closing out the match comfortably. He moved to nine game point opportunities with a precise smash and sealed it when his rival went to net. For mer Commonwealth Games bronze medallist RMV Gurusaidutt’s presence at the coach’s chair also helped Prannoy as he was seen chatting with the player during the mid-game interval. Gurusaidutt is on his first as-

signment with the Indian team after retiring from the game. Ng Long gave a better display in the second game as his movements improved and he managed to stay on the rallies but Prannoy did well to keep his nose ahead at 9-7 with a return on his opponent’s back hand corner. He had a two-point cushion at the mid-game interval after the Hong Kong player went wide again. The Indian extended his lead to 16-11. Ng Long produced occasional winners but he was too erratic, while Prannoy unleashed another jump smash to again wriggle out. In the end, a precise return on the baseline gave Prannoy four match points. He squandered two before converting the third chance with a booming smash following a superb rally.

LO N D O N, J U N 1 6 (IANS): The 2022-23 Premier League season will kick off with Crystal Palace taking on Arsenal on the opening day, on August 5, before Manchester City begin their title defence at West Ham on August 7 as the top English football league announced the schedule on Thursday. City’s arch-rivals Manchester United, under new manager Erik ten Hag and also with Cristiano Ronaldo in their side, will face Brighton on the same day, August 7 as well. The two table-toppers of the 2021-22 season Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City and Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool will lock horns at Anfield on October 15 with their second match scheduled at the Etihad Stadium on April 1. Both games will be on weekends.

This will be the first time in the history of the English Premier League (EPL) that the season will be paused for 43 days. There will be no matches after the weekend of November 12-13 until December 26 because of the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar. Dani Alves leaves Barca, Real Sociedad sign Mohamed Ali Cho

Dani Alves

Mohamed Ali Cho

MADRID, JUN 16 (IANS): FC Barcelona defender Dani Alves has confirmed that he will not continue at the Camp Nou Stadium next season after the club opted against taking up the option of another year on his contract. The 39-year-old Alves returned to the club for the second half of last season and played an important role in the improved form following the arrival of Xavi Hernandez, making 14 appearances and scoring one goal in La Liga to add to the nearly 250 appearances in his first spell at the club. However, he was left out of Barca’s squad for the Europa League and the return to fitness of Sergi Roberto, who has just signed a new one-year contract, and Sergino Dest are two factors

in his second departure. In an emotional letter, Alves confirmed he would be leaving Barcelona, thanking the club for his second chance to play in the Camp Nou and saying he hoped the players who “remain can change the history of this beautiful club.” Alves will now look for another club where he can play minutes to try and earn a place in the Brazil squad for the World Cup finals, reports Xinhua. There was more transfer news on Wednesday, with Real Sociedad confirming the signing of forward Mohamed Ali Cho from the French side, Angers. The French under-21 international has agreed on a contract until June 2027 and will cost 11 million euros and a percentage of any future sale.

L O N D O N, J U N 1 6 (AGENCIES): Inter Milan are hoping to secure the return of Belgium striker Romelu Lukaku from Chelsea. Lukaku is so keen to go back to Inter after a difficult season with the Blues that he would take a hefty wage cut. Chelsea still want a loan fee for the 29-yearold, who they signed for £97.5m from the Serie A side in August 2021. Inter are trying to limit their outgoings as they get their finances under control and there is no agreement yet on the size of the loan fee. It is thought a deal will eventually be struck given Lukaku’s eagerness to get back to Italy. Lukaku, who left Chelsea to join Everton for £28m in 2014, returned to the Stamford Bridge side on a five-year deal from Inter last summer. The fee for him was just short of the British transfer record of £100m paid by Manchester City for Jack Grealish. But Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel never gave the impression that Lukaku - who moved having helped the Italian club win the Serie A title in 2020-21 - suited his preferred style of play. The forward scored 15 goals in all competitions for the Blues, with eight in 26 Premier League appearances.

K.L Rahul to fly to Germany for groin treatment; to miss England tour

India opening batter K.L Rahul is all set to miss the entire tour of England as he will be flying to Germany for the treatment of his groin injury. Earlier, the right groin injury had resulted in Rahul being ruled out of India’s ongoing T20I series against South Africa on the eve of the opening match in New Delhi. “That is correct, the board is working on his fitness and he will be going to Germany soon,” BCCI secretary Jay Shah was quoted as saying in a report by Cricbuzz on Thursday. K.L Rahul

in early July. It means that Rahul will miss the England tour entirely, where India are to play the Edgbaston Test from July 1 to 5 and three T20Is, followed by as many ODIs. He was named vicecaptain under Rohit Shar-

ma for the Edgbaston Test but now, the Indian selection committee will have to name another deputy in place of Rahul. Previously, on Thursday morning, some key players of the Test squad like batters Virat Kohli,

Cheteshwar Pujara, opener Shubman Gill, all-rounders Shardul Thakur and Ravindra Jadeja, pacers Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj left for England after assembling in Mumbai The report further said that there is no plan for calling a replacement of Rahul unless the team management requested for the same. “In that case, Mayank Agarwal would have been named to the squad. The selectors, however, will have to announce a vice-captain for the tour as the chances of Rahul taking part in any of the seven games are virtually ruled out.”
