KO H I M A , AU G 1 6 (NPN): Barely a week after an all-party meeting comprising BJP, NDPP, NPF and two Independent legislators agreed in principle to form an all-party government under the nomenclature “Nagaland United Government”, decks have now been cleared for an opposition-less government after all the parties signed a resolution formalising a move to work together towards “achieving a common goal for an early Naga political solution.” Even though NPF legislators did not put any pre-condition in forming an opposition-less government, it has been learnt that in order to strike a balance, one cabinet post that fell vacant following the demise of senior NDPP member and minister CM Chang may be given to NPF with its leader TR Zeliang being

made deputy chief minister. Meanwhile, chief minister Neiphiu Rio in a tweet expressed joy that NDPP, BJP and NPF have come together “for an opposition-less government towards achieving our common goal for an early and peaceful solution to the ‘Naga Political Issue’.” From NDPP chief minister Neiphiu Rio, party president Chingwang Konyak and ministers Neiba Kronu and G Kaito Aye signed the resolution, while deputy chief minister Y Patton, party’s State unit president and minister Temjen Imna Along and ministers S Pangnyu Phom and P Paiwang Konyak signed on behalf of BJP. er of opposition TR Zeliang and MLAs Dr Chotisuh Sazo and Imkong L Imchen also signed the resolution on behalf of NPF. NNagaDAO, NNP+ file PIL against govt in HC

DIMAPUR, AUG 16 (NPN): Dismayed over the delay in appointing HIV and AIDS Ombudsman in the state, the Network of Nagaland NGOs on Drugs and AIDS Organisation (NNagaDAO) and Network of Naga People Living with HIV and AIDS (NNP+) have filed a public interest litigation (PIL) against the state government at the Gauhati High Court, Kohima bench seeking justice as per the HIV and AIDS Act and its rules. In a press release,

NNagaDAO president Abou Mere and NNP+ president Lanu Aier said that the state government was duty bound and had legal obligations to appoint an HIV and AIDS Ombudsman within 180 days from the commencement (notified) of the Nagaland Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) and Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS) (Ombudsman and Legal Proceeding) Rule 2019. However, the two stated that deadline for appointing the said

Ombudsman was already completed and long overdue. Stating that the state government was “fully aware” of the situation and the parameters of the said rules, the NNagaDAO and NNP+ said that the state gover nment must, therefore, not ignore, dilute or deviate from the “Nagaland State HIV Rules”. The two said that delay in appointing the HIV and AIDS Ombudsman and “trying to seek solutions” on own con-

venience and favour by state government was not acceptable. Fur ther, the two bodies said that if the PDA government was committed to equal justice, then it should not suppress the needs and rights of the marginalised people. They said that government must protect the right of every citizen regardless of wealth, race and status, and respect human rights and the law of the land. (Cont’d on p-8)

Mentioning that the t wo p e o p l e s h a d s e e n enough fighting, enough killing and enough hatred, Raising stated that they had lived too long in the illusion of false peace and false promises, which would lead to rise of people’s force. He, therefore, stressed that now was the time for negotiations and peace. “Like it or not, it is the time to live together in peace that is built on the foundation of mutual respect, mutual trust and mutual recognition of right or war will swallow us,” he said. SC says can’t compel ‘reluctant’ govt to file detailed affidavit

NEW DELHI, AUG 16 (PTI): The Centre on Monday asserted it had “nothing to hide” in the Pegasus snooping allegations and that a panel of experts will be set up to examine all issues raised even as the Supreme Court said the “reluctant” government cannot be compelled to file a detailed affidavit on pleas asking whether the spyware was used to snoop on certain citizens. A bench of the apex court headed by Chief Justice N V Ramana would on Tuesday deliberate on whether the Centre should file a detailed affidavit in the matter, after the short one on Monday in which it also submitted that the allegations were “based on conjectures and surmises or on other unsubstantiated

media reports or incomplete or uncorroborated material”. The batch of pleas also sought to know from the Centre if it took steps to probe the snooping allegations and wanted an independent probe into the alleged surveillance of certain eminent people in India through the use of the Israeli spyware. Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, appearing for the Centre, submitted during the hearing on the pleas that the matter, if gone into on the basis of unsubstantiated reports, may have “national security implications” and it cannot be handled by asking “furnish an affidavit etc”. The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology in a two-page affidavit told the bench that “to dispel any wrong narrative spread by certain vested interests” and with an object of examining the issues raised, the Centre will constitute a Committee of Experts in the field which will go into all aspects of the issue.

NEW DELHI, AUG 16 (PTI): Enforcement Directorate (ED) on Monday said it has attached assets worth Rs 6.88 crore of a close aide of top NSCN (I-M) leader T Muivah and others in a money laundering case. The ED has issued a provisional order under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) for attachment of bank balances, mutual funds and certain insurance products. These assets are held in the name of Rayilung Nsarangbe, a self-styled colonel and treasurer of the NSCN (I-M), his wife Ruth Chawang and Apam Muivah, who the ED said is a secretary to ‘’ato kilonser’’ (prime minister), Th. DIMAPUR: Department of land resources dispatched natural rubber sheets from Nagaland at Merapani (Marachu Yan) Wokha to Delhi, on August 16 with additional deputy commissioner (ADC) Bhandari, Tiameren Chang as special guest. According to a DIPR report, during the flagging off programme, Tiameren Chang lauded the efforts of the department for bringing recognition to Nagaland as a large scale, high quality natural rubber producing state. if the government set up a streamlined mechanism to check and regulate the outflow of products. Meanwhile, district project officer Wokha, Tepunol Yore said that the department supported rubber growers under pradhan mantri krishi sinchayee yojana watershed component (PMKSY-WDC), IWMP and NABARD funded RIDF tranches, achieving an area of 6,806 ha., and covering 4,135 households in Wokha district till 2020. DIMAPUR: Rising People’s Party (RPP), a newly floated political party in the state, has objected to the proposed consultative meeting convened by the state government on August 18, 2021, saying not a single woman has been invited to the “socalled” consultative meeting, which would, among other issues, discuss the women reservation in Urban Local Bodies (ULBs). In a press release, Dr. Abeny Khuvung and Amai Chingkhu of RPP stated that discussion on women reservation without women participation was “inconceivable”. Urging the PDA government to understand that women reservation was a complex subject, which po-

litical parties and CSOs were ill-equipped to handle, the RPP has suggested PDA government to host an allwomen consultative meet on the issue where the NMA, ENWO and their units, and professional and career women from different fields could also be invited. The party lamented that 14 Naga tribes along with chief minister, deputy chief minister, NLA speaker, ministers and advisors, and the chief secretary—all men or representing the menfolk—were “apparently deciding the fate of women in Naga politics” and yet, the manner in which the issue is being dealt with cannot be more chauvinistic.” Further, asserting that Naga woman in politics was

“perhaps the most important issue right now”, the RPP said the PDA government, given the background, should have addressed the issue more sensitively. It said that unless some of the best minds such as scholars, academicians, and think-tanks were involved in the discussion, any number of consultative meetings on reservation for women in Naga politics would not bear the desired results. “Or perhaps the whole purpose of the 18th August meeting is to ram through some PDA agenda?” RPP said. The par ty also expressed regret that the government “as usual” has “conveniently excluded both the Kuki and Kachari tribes”.

As per the FIR, at about 8.50 pm a Maruti car (ML-05W-3140), driven by Ferdison Mylliem Umlong, official driver of Mawphor Group of Publications, was “severely vandalized and the driver was grievously assaulted by a group of CRPF personnel” at Mawlai Umthlong main junction. “The victim was returning home along with his wife and mother-in-law after procuring medicine. Soon upon reaching the place of occurrence, the vehicle was stopped by the men in uniform who asked the driver to reverse to which he promptly obliged but instead they got irritated for unknown reasons and started lashing out at the car from behind, smashing the rear screen completely,” the FIR read. “A terrified wife and mother in law crawled

out of the car in utter fear and made a quick escape towards home to alert family members,” the FIR said, adding that the security men then asked Umlong to turn on the headlights and when he obeyed, “they went berserk shattering whatever glass piece of the already disintegrating car they could lay their batons and assault rifle muzzles upon and furiously denting all metal parts of the car to the moulds of their weapons of choice”. Children can be vulnerable to 3rd wave of Covid: Manipur health dept Correspondent IMPHAL, AUG 16: Children can be vulnerable to the third wave of Covid-19, Manipur health department cautioned on Monday. “It is imperative for parents to take utmost care of their children by strictly following Covid Appropriate Behaviours and other protocols,” state health director, Dr K Rajo said. Addressing a news conference, the director said that the state was also prepared to face the third wave with more focus on protecting the children. Steps for imparting special training to health officials of the state on protection of this vulnerable group (children) from COVID-19 has been taken up in the state, the director informed. The steps were being taken up in line with an instruction from the Union ministry of health service, he said.

He cited that the number of children exposed to the virus during the second wave was much more than that of the first wave and added that the possible third wave of COVID-19 was likely to affect children more than adults. He stressed the need for the parents to take utmost care for their wards during the third wave. “The best way to protect from exposure to the virus is strict adherence to the Covid Appropriate Behaviours,” he said. On the other hand, the director said that the rise in the COVID-19 infection in the state was due to certain changes in the pattern of testing. Despite the surge in the infection rate, steps were being taken up to reduce the fatality rate, he said. The director also informed that the mobile testing van with RT-PCR facility which was introduced in the state recently

started operational from Monday. On the first day, 47 individuals were tested, out of which five were found to have been infected by the virus, he said. The first ever mobile RT-PCR lab with CRISPR advanced facility that could be used for Covid-19 testing was launched on August 13. The director said that the facility can provide results of the test faster compared to the normal RT PCR test. The results can be provided within three to four hours of collection of the sample. He said that the facility is testing at an affordable charge of Rs 450 for each test and one can avail the facility at home with an additional charge of Rs 50. Home testing service was also launched on Monday and on the first day, where 96 persons were tested out of which 12 were found positive, the director said.

Tripura: Former Cong MP Sushmita Dev quits party, joins TMC GUWAHATI, AUG 16 (AGENCIES): All India Mahila Congress president and former MP from Silchar Sushmita Dev resigned from the Congress Sunday, and joined Trinamool Congress (TMC) in presence of TMC national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee. Inducting Dev into the party, TMC tweeted, “We warmly welcome the former President of All India Mahila Congress Sushmita Dev to our Trinamool family!” According to The Indian Express, the resignation of Dev — who is the daughter of seven-time parliamentarian Santosh Mohan Dev and considered the face of the Congress in Assam’s largely Bengali-speaking Barak Valley — comes as a big blow to the Congress. In the recently-concluded Assam Assembly elections in May, the Congress— which had partnered with Badruddin Ajmal’s All India United Democratic Front (AIDUF)

TMC leader Abhishek Banerjee welcomes Sushmita Dev as she joins the party in Kolkata. (PTI) — was defeated by the NDA alliance. Since then, at least two prominent Congress legislators (Rupjyoti Kurmi and Sushanta Borgohain) have jumped ship to the BJP. In a letter to Congress chief Sonia Gandhi, Dev did not mention why she was resigning but said that she cherished her “three-decadelong association” with the party. “May I take this opportunity to thank the party,

all its leaders, members, and workers who have been a part of my memorable journey,” Dev wrote in the letter, expressing gratitude to Sonia Gandhi for her “guidance.”Following Dev’s resignation, senior Congress leader Kapil Sibal tweeted: “Sushmita Dev Resigns from primary membership of our Party. While young leaders leave we ‘oldies’ are blamed for our efforts

to strengthen it The Party moves on with: Eyes Wide Shut.” Congress leader of the Opposition in Assam, Debabrata Saikia confirmed to The Indian Express that Dev had sent a letter to Sonia Gandhi on Friday night. On Saturday afternoon, the Congress high command — including Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi — had a meeting with the delegations of the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee in Delhi. “She was very much a part of the meeting…we were not aware she was going to quit,” said Saikia. However, rumours of Dev’s quitting surfaced in February, when she is said to have walked out of a party meeting in Guwahati unhappy over selection of candidates and seat-sharing with AIUDF in the three Barak Valley districts in south Assam. Later in an interview, she told The Indian Express that she “never wanted to resign” but was

“hurt”. “When we had a one-on-one conversation before the elections, she was mentioning that she did not prefer the Congress alliance with AIUDF. However, she worked for the party after that…I do not know what happened recently but the old reason was that she was against the AIUDF alliance,” Saikia said. Sources said that she was “disgruntled” with the party because she felt that her “political space was continuously being shrunk”. “Her Lok Sabha seat (Silchar) has about seven assembly segments… there were talks that that half of them would be given to the AIUDF or and some to Muslim candidates in the Congress in the Assembly elections. She felt that it would decimate the Congress in Barak Valley, alienate the Hindu voters further, and hurt her chances in 2024 elections as well,” a source close to her said.

Ministry grants permission Introspect what freedom means: Sonia Gandhi Aviation to use drones to 10 organisations Says sin to stay silent when fundamental rights, Constitution trampled upon

NEW DELHI, AUG 16 (PTI): As India enters the 75th year of independence, the Cong ress Monday said par ty chief Sonia Gandhi has urged people to introspect what freedom means and told them it is a “sin” to remain silent when fundamental rights and the Constitution are “trampled upon”. She also said the country’s democracy needs repairing. “When fundamental rights of people, guaranteed by the founding fathers of our Constitution are being trampled upon, it is a sin to stay silent,” Congress chief spokesperson Randee p Surjewala said, quoting Gandhi’s ar ticle in an English daily. He said that in the article, the party president has talked about what freedom means for people, with the country entering the 75th year of Independence. When the government “attacks” Parliament and “tramples upon” its t r a d i t i o n s, “ e n s l ave s ” democracy, attempts to

“violate” the Constitution and “shackles” institutional autonomy, the people of the country need to introspect what freedom means to them, she has said. Gandhi has alleged that currently journalists do not have the freedom to write, TV channels the freedom to show the truth, and writers and thinkers the freedom to express themselves. She also alleged parliamentarians don’t have the freedom to express their views, people affected by the oxygen shortage crisis and GST do not have the freedom to speak and the states, in a federal structure, do not have the freedom to demand their rights. In her article she argues that Indian democracy is in need of repair. “We must undo the damage.” She said the progress achieved in the last few decades has been reversed under the present government which indulges in “hollow slogans, event management and brandbuilding” at the cost of governance. “A f t e r d e c a d e s o f progress towards an India of our dreams, why is our democracy in danger? It is because tangible achievements have been

Sonia Gandhi

s u b s t i t u t e d b y h o l l ow slogans, event management and brand-building only to benefit those in power – at the expense of governance. “It is because symbolism has triumphed over meaningful action. It is because democracy is sought to be replaced by an autocracy. Today’s symbolism and reality is that Parliament House is being turned into a museum,” Gandhi said in the article shared by the Congress. “A s w e b e g i n independent India’s 75th year, we owe it to our freedom fighters to undo this damage to our Republic,” the Congress president said. She also called on the need to draw courage from them to take on those who would replace their inclusive, liberating idealism with a narrow, sectarian, worldview overflowing with prejudice

and discrimination. “ We mu s t n o t b e swayed by hollow attempts to appropriate our icons by those who made no contribution to our struggle for independence. They may borrow Gandhiji’s eyeglasses but their vision for our country remains Godse’s. Our founders r e j e c t e d t h a t d iv i s ive ideology 74 years ago, and we must reject it once again,” Gandhi said. She said in a world affected by the COVID-19 and climate change, India’s response to these challenges will be crucial to the world. “The recently concluded Monsoon session of Parliament displayed the disdain of the present [Modi] government towards parliamentary processes and building consensus,” Gandhi said. She claimed that the opposition was r e p e a t e d ly d e n i e d a n

Terrorism in last phase in Kashmir: Jitendra Singh JAMMU, AUG 16 (PTI): Union minister Jitendra Singh Monday said there is a visible change in the thinking of people in Jammu and Kashmir and terrorism in its “last p h a s e ” i n K a s h m i r, which witnessed largescale Independence Day celebrations Sunday. The Minister of State in the Prime Minister’s Office was in Kathua, part of his Udhampur parliamentary constituency, to inaugurate a high-efficiency oxygen generation plant at G ove r n m e n t M e d i c a l C o l l e g e, e s t a b l i s h e d through the PM-Cares Fund. “There is a change in the thinking of the people (in Kashmir). The residents of Srinagar who are moving around in lanes and bylanes want a change and be part of (Prime minister

Jitendra Singh

Narendra) Modi’s New India like the people in other parts of the country,” Singh told reporters after dedicating the oxygen plant to the public. However, he said there is a “veil of fear” which is stopping the public from expressing themselves openly. “I feel it is the last phase of terrorism there,” the minister said, responding to a question about the large scale Independence Day

celebrations in the valley. Flag hoisting ceremonies were held at many places in the valley Sunday. Referring to the setting up of the fourth oxygen plant at GMC Kathua within a short span during the coronavirus pandemic, the minister said the prime minister has a special concern for Jammu and Kashmir, especially the gateway district of Kathua. “The prime minister in his independence day speech of 90 minutes from the Red Fort deliberated in detail about J&K and northeastern states. He talked about the delimitation commission in J&K and assembly elections in the coming months,” Singh said. The BJP government set up District Development Councils (DDC) for the

first time and completed the elections to Panchayats in the past two years despite “hurdles”, the minister said without elaborating, but referring apparently to regional parties including National Conference and PDP which boycotted the panch and sarpanch elections besides the local bodies polls. Asked about t h e d e ve l o p m e n t s i n Afghanistan, the union minister said the “External Affairs Ministry is taking note of such things”. “I am not supposed to comment on the issue but the concerned ministry has taken note of the happenings there,” he said. The minister reached Kathua, which falls in his home constituency of Udhampur, and attended several functions in the district.

opportunity to raise issues of national importance. “Increasingly over the past 7 years, laws have been passed without debate in the House or scrutiny by a Committee, effectively turning Parliament into a rubber stamp,” she alleged. She also alleged democratically-elected state governments have been toppled, disrespecting people’s mandates. She also criticised the gover nment’s handling of the coronavirus crisis. “Decades of progress in improving health care have been reversed by the mismanagement of the COVID-19 pandemic.” Refer ring to the farmers’ agitation, she alleged the government has refused to heed to their legitimate concerns. “We must ensure that those who feed us do not themselves starve. We have to make agriculture more sustainable, economically and ecologically,” she said. She also alleged the misuse of laws and g ove r n m e n t a g e n c i e s. “Doctored videos, planted evidence, and fake toolkits are all becoming weapons of intimidation and disinformation to suppress dissent,” she alleged.

Union Health Minister lauds COVID-19 prevention steps in Kerala

THIRUVANANTHA PURAM, AUG 16 (PTI): Union Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya, who arrived in Kerala with a central team on Monday to review the COVID-19 situation in the state, lauded the coronavirus prevention steps taken by the Left government. The state Public Relations Department, in a release, said that Mandaviya, after his meeting with Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan and Health Minister Veena George, stated that the healthcare system here was excellent and assured availability of more vaccines for Kerala. The Union Minister praised the lack of vaccine wastage by the state, saying that it has set an example with regard to administration of doses. Union Health Secretary Rajesh Bhushan also said that Kerala was ahead of the national average in vaccination and the death rate here was low, the PRD statement said.

Mansukh Mandaviya

Mandaviya and the central team visited Kerala at a time when it was accounting for more than half of the nation’s daily fresh infection caseload. Kerala on Sunday reported 18,582 new COVID-19 cases, which was more than half of the national total of 32,937 fresh coronavirus cases. On Sunday, the Test Positivity Rate was 15.11 per cent in the state.

Chennai-based Tractors and Far m Equipment Limited has got the per mission to conduct “drone-based aerial spraying” to assess crop health and prevent crop disease. The ministry said Pune-based Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology to conduct atmospheric research at five different locations in the country. The ministry said it has granted conditional exemption to the aforementioned 10 organisations from the Unmanned Aircraft System (UAS) Rules, 2021, and it is ‘valid for a period of one year from the date of approval or until further orders’.

Vistara’s Delhi-London flights stop using Afghanistan airspace NEW DELHI, AUG 16 (PTI): Vistara’s flights from Delhi to London have stopped using Afghanistan airspace as the country faces an uncertain future after Kabul fell into the hands of the Taliban on Sunday. The Afghanistan airspace on Monday was declared “uncontrolled” by the Kabul airport and transit flights have been asked to avoid it. Vistara spokesperson said on Monday, “We have stopped using Afghanistan airspace and are taking an alternate route for our flights to and from London Heathrow.” “We are closely working with the relevant authorities to monitor and assess the situation and taking necessary steps to ensure the safety of our passengers, staff and aircraft,” the spokesperson added. Vistara is not going to reduce the number of its Delhi-London flights. The full-service carrier currently operates four weekly flights on Delhi-LondonDelhi route.

Post-mortem

VOL. XXXI NO. 252 DIMAPUR, TUESDAY, AUGUST 17, 2021

Talibans are back

T

here are perhaps many factors that led to the unexpected and express capitulation of Afghanistan’s U.S.-trained forces, who appeared more intent on avoiding any confrontation with the rag tag Talibans. One of the factors that led to rapid collapse of the three to four lakh strong Afghan military against hardly seventy thousand rag tag Talibans, is the lack of will and purpose to fight and the absence of ground and air support from the US military. After US president Joe Biden ordered total withdrawal of all US personnel, the Afghan army was deprived of ground support, the most vital fighting component. The Afghan army was trained, armed and funded by the US. The Aghan army personnel even begun to adopt the American fighting –style that is most unsuited in Afghanistan. Also, those who joined the Afghan army were motivated by the handsome salary earned while Afghans who joined the Talibans were driven by a sense of nationalism to drive the foreign invaders out. The majority of Afghans, who have been beneficiaries of twenty years of American and western aid and development, are the biggest losers and will have to live on hopes that their fates under the Taliban will not be as terrible as in the past. The Taliban have gained a reputation for brutality and enforcement of a harsh brand of Islamic justice in the five years they ruled until being toppled by invading U.S.-led forces in 2001. Of all, the Taliban of the past were infamous for denying education to women, carrying out public executions of their opponents, abduction of teenage girls for forced marriages with Taliban fighters, persecuting minorities, such as the Shiite Hazaras, and destroying priceless ancient giant stone Buddhas at Bamiyan. Even though the Talibans now are trying to project themselves as slightly more restrained; yet in the areas of the country where they have regained control, they have been executing people summarily, lashing women, shutting down schools and blowing up hospitals and infrastructure. The Talibans are worst face of conservative Islam; they are blood thirsty terrorists who have no human compunction to carry out atrocities in the name of their religion. Therefore, there’s no guarantee that Afghanistan wouldn’t once again become a safe haven for terrorists- either those intent on doing harm to the U.S. or other foreign powers even including India. With the Talibans now in control of Afghanistan, Pakistan’s Inter-Services Intelligence, or ISI- the country’s equivalent of the CIA-will be very much in the thick of things. ISI is widely believed to have helped the Taliban by deputing senior Pakistani army officers to command Taliban units or provide guidance for the takeover in Afghanistan. Pakistan’s military, in particular, has long viewed an ideologically and religiously like-minded Afghanistan as a necessary bulwark against its traditional rival, India. Afghanistan under the Talibans this time could be different because both Russia and China are more than willing to do deals for trade. China in particular, has reportedly promised big investments in energy and infrastructure projects, including the building of a road network in Afghanistan and is also eyeing the country’s vast, untapped, rare-earth mineral deposits. Also Beijing was already reportedly preparing to formally recognize the Taliban before the group seized control of the country. India should be concerned about the Pakistan-China nexus in Afghanistan since it will have a global impact on geo-politics in the region.

DailyDevotion Does He Know Me?

He calls his own…by name… —John 10:3 When I have sadly misunderstood Him? (see John 20:11-18). It is possible to know all about doctrine and still not know Jesus. A person’s soul is in grave danger when the knowledge of doctrine surpasses Jesus, avoiding intimate touch with Him. Why was Mary weeping? Doctrine meant no more to her than the grass under her feet. In fact, any Pharisee could have made a fool of Mary doctrinally, but one thing they could never ridicule was the fact that Jesus had cast seven demons out of her (see Luke 8:2); yet His blessings were nothing to her in comparison with knowing Jesus Himself. “…she turned around and saw Jesus standing there, and did not know that it was Jesus….Jesus said to her, ‘Mary!’ ” (John 20:14, 16). Once He called Mary by her name, she immediately knew that she had a personal history with the One who spoke. “She turned and said to Him, ‘Rabboni!’ ” (John 20:16). When I have stubbornly doubted? (see John 20:2429). Have I been doubting something about Jesus— maybe an experience to which others testify, but which I have not yet experienced? The other disciples said to Thomas, “We have seen the Lord” (John 20:25). But Thomas doubted, saying, “Unless I see…I will not believe” (John 20:25). Thomas needed the personal touch of Jesus. When His touches will come we never know, but when they do come they are indescribably precious. “Thomas…said to Him, ‘My Lord and my God!’ ” (John 20:28). When I have selfishly denied Him? (see John 21:1517). Peter denied Jesus Christ with oaths and curses (see Matthew 26:69-75), and yet after His resurrection Jesus appeared to Peter alone. Jesus restored Peter in private, and then He restored him publicly before the others. And Peter said to Him, “Lord…You know that I love You” (John 21:17). Do I have a personal history with Jesus Christ? The one true sign of discipleship is intimate oneness with Him— a knowledge of Jesus that nothing can shake.

NAGALAND POST, DIMAPUR TUESDAY, AUGUST 17, 2021

S

mall and a hilly landlocked country it may be, Nagalim is blessed with rich natural and mineral resources. It is a fertile land. Apart from perpetual flow of rivers and streams, we have another source of water supply from regular rainfall. There is no dearth of water and no desert in Nagalim. It is covered with green forest with varieties of fruits and a home to biodiversity. Some renowned geologists and scientists who surveyed the earth through satellites from above, on and below the surface said, “Nagas are sitting on the mount of gold.” They said there is an extensive mineral belt in Naga country. It is an important commercial corridor between the Indian sub-continent and the Southeast Asian countries. On top of that, the Nagas are endowed with added blessings of physical, mental and spiritual potentialities to grow in all fields. The Nagas are also rich in culture and legendary stories of the revolutionary heroes and heroines who championed the cause of the people. Deeply moved by the love of motherland, our fathers fought back the Indian and the Burmese expansionist forces with determination and a great zeal of nationalism when they invaded our country after the departure of the British. They did so because land is everything

W

Stand firm or perish

and it is priceless for them. Land is the foundation of our history, our culture, our politics, our economy, and our nationhood, and that, if our land is lost to the invaders, we lost everything. If we do not honour our motherland, she will also dishonour us. If we sell out our motherland to the invaders, we will become their tenants or become beggars in our own land. When our land, falls everything of us will fall. Therefore, we must stand firm on the issue of land or we perish. The past generations spearheaded by the revolutionary patriots stood firm on the issues of land and national principle with one mind, one decision and one faith in every event of aggression by the enemies. Stirred by the spirit of nationalism all people without exception of age, sex and status joined the revolutionary patriots in the forefront to fight the enemies in defence of our land, our sovereign right, our identity, our culture, our history and future. The Indian leaders, applying carrot and stick policy came forward with a sugarcoated political bait in the form of an autonomous state under Indian constitution with a view to win over the heart of those corrupt and spineless opportunists and to divide the Nagas, but it was rejected by the revolutionary Naga people. Indeed, our fathers stood

their ground in the face of the enemies’ onslaught to save the future of the Nagas and leave the legacy of a living history to their posterities. As God was with the Israelites in their long march of the great exodus so He is with the Nagas today. As He was with our past leadership so is He with our present leadership too. Inspired and guided by the spirit of free ‘Nagalim for Christ,’ thousands of the present Naga youngsters joined NSCN rallying around the present leadership. NSCN cadres are proven fighting force to be reckoned with. They fought the enemies’ forces in the east, in the west, in the jungles, in the highways, in the towns and everywhere. In the diplomatic field too, taking all necessary risks and troubles, NSCN leaders spoke on the Naga issue to the world political leaders, international community, international human right organizations and the church leaders. The world is now well informed of the Naga political issue and situation in Nagalim. Mr Boutros Boutros-Ghali, the then General Secretary of the United Nations acknowledged, “There is a serious human right situation in Nagaland (Nagalim).” We do not believe enemies can distort the recognized unique history of the Naga nationhood however strong and crafty they may be.

The identity of man or animal runs in his/its blood. The identity of the Nagas too runs in their blood; our identity is also revealed in our culture, our history, our politics and faith. Law makers cannot create natural identity of a people; they cannot give it to a people or take it away from them. It is a gift of the sovereign God only to be recognized. After a long fight the Government of India and the National Socialist Council of Nagalim agreed the term two entities in the talk held at Bangkok on the 31st July, 2000. It was also reaffirmed in the subsequent talks and by the historic Framework Agreement of August 3, 2015. The recognized Naga national entity must be upheld at all costs and at all times or we perish. Every learned Naga or Indian understands that sovereignty is about power to make and unmake things except man; it is about power to make decision on all matters of a people by the people themselves, not by others; it is about power to create a state for developing a country, not about development of a country on the debris of a state; it is about power to raise human resources to subdue nature and the world, not to be subdued by them; it is about power to bring peace on earth, not war; it is about power to build and rebuild relationship among peoples and

nations, not about merger of one into the other; it is about power to protect the future of a people, not to murder it; it is about power to orientate a people to the living God, not the idol. Our land and people, our sovereignty and politics, our unique history and identity, our culture and religion are the ingredients of our sovereign nation. The Framework Agreement recognizes our sovereignty. We must hold it fast or we perish. History says there are aggressors all around in every generation at all times. It is they who start war. War destroys cities and states; war divides people and land; war destroys peace and progress on earth and war destroys harmonious interdependent relationship among peoples and nations. War must be stopped, but it cannot be stopped with weapons, it is to be stopped only by man; fighting may kill thousands of people, but killing cannot stop war rather it fuels war. War cannot bring peace on earth; War can be stopped only by man through agreement. Peace is brought by man through agreement. The Nagas believe that the Indo-Naga war can be stopped only by the two peoples through mutual agreement. The long-cherished solution of the Indo-Naga political problem can be arrived at only through mutual agreement; harmonious in-

terdependent relationship of the two peoples can be institutionalized by agreement; and a lasting peace between the two peoples can be brought about by agreement. This problem can never be solved by might; it cannot be left to be solved by time or left to the next generations; it must be solved now, but by the right authorities of the two peoples through political talks and agreement. We need peace in the land; we need peace not only for the present generation, but also for all generations of the two peoples. We need peace to walk together and live together in all fields. Both the aggressors and the aggrieved need peace. All of us need peace because peace is the will of God. The two peoples have seen enough fighting, enough killing and enough hatred between them. They have lived too long in the illusion of false peace and false promises, which will conceivably bring the rise of people’s force on the stage again. It is now the time of negotiation and the time of peace. Like it or not, it is the time to live together in peace that is built on the foundation of mutual respect, mutual trust and mutual recognition of right or war will swallow us. Rh. Raising, Member, Collective Leadership, National Socialist Council of Nagalim

Core committee: Just another political gimmick

e, the Nagas, seem to deliberately want to suffer from short memory. Otherwise, we ought to recall that not long in the recent past, both FNR and ACAUT had earnestly tried their very best to establish some sanity by trying to bring the warring Factions together in their own respective ways: the former through Christian spirit of forgiveness and reconciliation; the latter through public pressure for streamlining the insane ‘National taxation’ norms by projecting “one Government, one tax”. FNR’s effort was laudable in that it managed to halt the trigger happy Factions to control their itching fingers on their AK47, for the first time and thereby eased the pressure on the masses from desperate fear psychosis of being in harm’s way on a daily basis. However, if we were to pause for a moment and ask a simple question: what were the Factions killing each other for? It was not for any high sounding political ideology but purely for absolute ‘greed tax’ control over territories. The unintended side effect however was that the Factions stopped fighting each other and instead agreed to share the taxing rights on the beasts of burden (i.e. the masses) without hindering one another. Today most of the Factions sit together in all the State entry gates along with our policemen, all happily collecting tax with total abandon and causing severe cost escalation of all the essential commodities in Nagaland. Further drama displayed by NSCN (IM) was their absolute sense of insecurity in forging unity with other factions. They therefore intricately fabricated a complex web of their stand on the so-called ‘national principle’, based on which they perfunctorily asked for forgiveness from all the Factions even as they too forgave others for all the past omissions and commissions, but in the same breath made the whole exercise redundant and meaningless when they asked all Factions to come and join ‘their mainstream’. They violated the very spirit of Christian forgiveness by not acknowledging the status of equality of all involved in the aftermath scenario of forgiveness. The under current here had a great deal to do with egocentric inabilities within the upper echelons of NSCN (IM) cadre unwilling to put their leadership

position at risk. This equation is not about to change come what may! Today, the problem has further been compounded with NSCN (IM) having shifted the goalpost at the final hour after having concluded the negotiation…by uncompromisingly coming up with the subject of Flag and Yehzabo afresh…which, along with the issue of integration, had already been agreed in principle to be addressed in the future through due democratic process. In all honesty, this ‘due democratic process’… stick and carrot policy of the GoI… leaves much to be desired by way of past experiences. The 16 Point agreement had the issue of “integration” that was also kept suspended to be sorted out through ‘due democratic process’ that, after all these years, has still not happened. Honor in the court of the GoI is highly suspect and therefore NSCN (IM), as indeed the Nagas, has every reason to question its sincerity. NSCN (IM) has therefore deliberately and understandably left no space for compromise and reconciliation with GoI on this issue. “What must be salvaged must be salvaged before the final settlement” is a rational sentiment, considering the trust deficit factor on the part of the adversary. The time tested stubbornness of NSCN (IM) under the leadership of Mr. Th. Muivah is therefore understandable. He has generated a severe log jam that has vitiated the atmosphere of uncertainty to the otherwise concluded negotiation of the Indo-Naga political settlement. Having said this however, we ought to broaden our horizon and analyze the other unchartered chapter as to why NSCN (IM) has adopted this unwavering stance. Mr. Th. Muivah must be given credit where credit is due. For better or for worse, he has definitely sacrificed his entire life for the National cause and this much must respectfully be acknowledged. However, the stark truth lies in the fact that there is no relevant platform for Mr. Th. Muivah to occupy after the final Indo-Naga political settlement is arrived at. In the absence of integration he cannot claim the chair of Chief Minister of Nagaland. At best he can be the Chief Executive Councilor of the Regional Autonomous Council of the Naga territory in Manipur, far removed from an aspiration as “the Father

of the Nation” and would perhaps not be considered by him as commensurate to the sacrifice he has made. Now consider the present reality: Mr. Th. Muivah commands a very strong clandestine presence in all the Naga territories of Arunachal, Manipur and Nagaland and would prefer to die in harness, maintaining this unquestioned ironclad authority rather than be reduced to only a small base in Manipur at the end of his life’s journey. It is apparent that this problem of placement of Mr. Miuvah in the aftermath of the solution is far more significant than meets the eyes. It is no wonder therefore that a fervent attempt is being made to recreate a similar overreaching platform called the Pan Naga Hoho defined as a ‘statuary cultural body’ but with an overriding “mandatory authority” over statuary governments in all the Naga territories of Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur and Nagaland as intended in their undisclosed “competency clauses”, with Mr. Muivah as its Chairman perhaps, who would want to continue imposing his will on all the Naga territories, integrated or not. Unless the Nagas of Nagaland is totally devoid of grey matter, such a bizarre set up is something that is absolutely unacceptable and unpalatable. It must strongly be opposed. The GoI ought to observe a modicum of honor, for a change, in not enacting an Act of Parliament to create a statuary cultural body such as Pan Naga Hoho by violating the very basic foundry of Article 371A where customs, tradition, culture etc. is clearly a State Subject. The above narration represents the overall reality canvas. It would therefore appear that our very own ‘responsible’ elected political fraternity has consciously and willingly compromised all their ethical sense of dignity, honor, credibility and legitimacy of their existence. In any given democracy a strong opposition is a mandatory requirement to ensure fair and transparent governance. Therefore, no matter how eloquent the hype concerning the so-called “Opposition-less” Government, it is woefully apparent that the bottom line is MONEY as the only driving force that dictates all the thinking process in the minds of all the Ali Babas in the Assembly. The very backbone of democracy has

been mortally fractured over and over again in Nagaland by the very people we elect …term after term…with corruption becoming a way of life…but the worst part of the story is that our people will still continue selling their votes to them yet again, come election, no matter how damning and crippling their performances has been, in trampling upon the well being of the common man. Now that the general election is around the corner, we are being made to suffer the comedy of an ‘opposition-less’ State Legislative Assembly yet again in an exclusive Nagaland style democracy… and the reason being crafted for the murder of democracy is to ‘show solidarity’ of our elected Members of Legislative Assembly to achieve an early Indo-Naga political solution. This useless show of comical solidarity could have very well been achieved with the opposition bench remaining in opposition but agreeing to full heartedly participate in the Core Committee without strangling the democratic structure of governance. At this juncture, the whole population has been wondering what this Core Committee is really attempting to achieve in this uncompromising landscape… and one can’t help wondering whether the members of this Committee themselves have a clear vision as to what their real agenda is… other than of course the clarity of

joining the ruling government to claim their share of the remaining booty before the election. To cut the long story short, if the Core Committee, as a facilitator, really want to be useful they should perhaps spend quality time with Mr. Muivah and seriously try and ascertain what status he envisions for himself after the settlement. Without doubt, his initial prompt response would be that he would rather ‘die in harness’ than to submit to our adversary. It will be a challenging task to say the least but it is an educated guess that finding an honest answer to this question will ease the deadlock. If the Core committee cannot perceive this reality and explore the unchartered possibilities then it is a waste of time making efforts to try and bring the Factions together under the same roof. It won’t work and it will not happen…EVER. The opposition-less government for show solidarity will remain a very poor unconvincing excuse and the formation of a Core Committee just another political gimmick. At the end of the day, we, the voting population, condemn ourselves to suffer the consequences of all the ruthless corruption being perpetuated by our ‘standup comedians’ in the Assembly… as long as we continue to sell our votes to the highest bidder. Sir,

Keeping mosquitoes at bay

With pest control being an essential part of a healthy home, pesky ones like mosquitoes can cause several diseases and in Dimapur, breeding grounds for mosquitoes can be seen everywhere. The standing water, yard debris, clogged gutters and drains. Come the rainy season and it’s not surprising to see them resurface in huge numbers. It should be the duty of every citizen to ensure that the city is healthy and clean. One handy tip for the rainy season is to drop a little oil in puddles around your home because it hampers the life cycle of mosquitoes by not allowing eggs to hatch. We must also remove waste from our house regularly and make sure our neighborhood stays clean as well. If you see trash lying around for more than a couple of days, ensure that it is picked up and disposed of properly. Remember that each year nearly 700 million people contract mosquito-borne illnesses such as Dengue, Malaria, Chikungunya, Zika Fever and various types of Encephalitis. As responsible citizens, protecting the health of the city as well as ours is important. India reviews Afghanistan’s worsening situation Use of force by marshals during ruckus NEW DELHI, AUG 16 (PTI): India’s defence top brass, the foreign policy establishment and senior intelligence officials are understood to have reviewed the fast-paced developments in Afghanistan on Monday, a day after the Taliban seized control of the country 20 years after it was ousted by a US-led military coalition. People familiar with the meetings said the immediate priority of the government is to evacuate nearly 200 Indians, including Indian embassy staffers and security personnel from Kabul as the situation in the Afghan capital was fast deteriorating after the Taliban captured it on Sunday night. Capping its month-long rapid advances, the Taliban took positions in Kabul hours after Afghan President Ashraf Ghani left the country on Sunday for an unknown

On Monday, thousands of desperate people converged at the Kabul international airport in hopes of getting on an evacuation flight and leave the country. The airport has al-

Man, woman set themselves on fire in front of Supreme Court NEW DELHI, AUG 16 (IANS): A man and a woman set themselves ablaze in front of the Supreme Court complex on Monday, but were rescued by police and bystanders and rushed to hospital. Their motive was yet unclear. Panic broke out outside gate number D at around 12.20 p.m. after the duo tried to get into the top court premises. Spotting that the duo had set themselves

ablaze, Delhi Police personnel rushed to their rescue. Water was poured on the woman who was engulfed in flames and she fell on the ground. A group of persons, along with the police personnel, then rushed to rescue the man. The police immediately rushed the duo to Ram Manohar Lohia hospital for treatment. The man appears to have sustained burn injuries on his leg.

ready been shut for commercial flights and subsequently, the US military has taken control of the airport security to facilitate the evacuation of foreign diplomats and citizens. The chaos and panic at the Kabul airport was delaying a decision on sending evacuation flights to the Afghan capital though

a number of heavy-lift C-17 Globemaster military transport aircraft of the Indian Air Force is kept on standby for the last two days, people familiar with these deliberations said. According to unconfirmed reports, India sent a C-17 Globemaster aircraft to Afghanistan and it returned on Monday. There were also security concerns over bringing the Indians from the Indian embassy and other places to the airport in view of the deteriorating security situation in the capital city. The government is also looking at bringing back hundreds of Indian citizens and facilitate the evacuation of the members of the Hindu and Sikh minorities as well as Afghan nationals who have applied for visas from the Indian embassy, officials said. “The situation is evolving very fast and we

are monitoring it closely,” said one of the persons involved in preparations for evacuating the stranded Indians in Kabul. India along with so many other countries were surprised at the lightning advances made by the Taliban across Afghanistan in capturing power after the US began pulling out its troops on May 1 from the country, ahead of the 20th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks. “Definitely, we did not expect Kabul to fall so soon,” said an official on condition of anonymity. India has been a key stakeholder in Afghanistan and it has invested nearly USD 3 billion in carrying out nearly 500 projects across Afghanistan. The Taliban takeover of Afghanistan is largely seen as a setback for India as the militant outfit has strongly been backed by Pakistan’s powerful military.

in RS indirect attack on MPs: Pawar

MUMBAI, AUG 16 (PTI): NCP chief Sharad Pawar on Monday claimed the use of force by mashals during ruckus in the Rajya Sabha last week was an “indirect attack on parliamentarians”, and if seven Union ministers come together before media to justify the government, it shows they are on a “weak wicket”. Addressing a press conference here, the Rajya Sabha member said in his 54 years of parliamentary life, he had never seen 40 marshals entering the House during session. Pawar further said a probe was needed into the allegations that “outsiders” entered the House when it was in session. He also said any Congress leader from among Abhishek Manu Singhvi, P Chidambaram and Kapil Sibal should be part of a parliamentary committee on the Pegasus snooping issue. B e f o r e t h e R a j ya Sabha was adjourned sine die last Wednesday, it witnessed ugly scenes of Opposition members jostling with marshals as they tore papers, entered the Well of the Upper House and attempted to go near the presiding officer’s chair. After a peaceful debate and the smooth passage of a bill to restore the states’ powers to identify and notify their own lists of OBCs, all hell broke loose when the insurance amendment bill to privatise the state-run

general insurance companies was taken up. Calling it a sell-off, the Opposition MPs stormed into the Well of the House shouting anti-government slogans. They were, however, prevented from going anywhere near the table of the House or the chair by a wall of about 50 security staff that sort of cordoned off what Chairman M Venkaiah Naidu referred to as the “sanctum sanctorum”. Referring to the din in the House, Pawar said, “We were told some bills are about constitutional amendment. The opposition said there is no mention of the Pegasus (snooping) issue to be discussed. Whatever happened, happened in front of me since my seat is in the front. Some members did go into the Well.” “As many as 40 marshals were called who physically pushed the MPs,

which included two women. Many rushed to help them. The marshals used force which was an indirect attack on the parliamentarians,” said Pawar, whose party shares power with the Shiv Sena and Congress in Maharashtra. He said Sanjay Raut (Shiv Sena’s leader in the Rajya Sabha) was physically lifted by marshals. On Sunday, seven Union ministers met Vice President and Rajya Sabha Chairman M Venkaiah Naidu and demanded action against some Opposition members for their alleged unruly acts in the House on August 11. Pawar said, “If seven Union ministers come together before media to justify the government, it shows they are on a weak wicket. The government may take action against the Opposition members, but this is very dangerous for democracy.”

AI cancels its flight to Kabul

NEW DELHI, AUG 16 (PTI): Air India cancelled its Delhi-Kabul-Delhi flight that was scheduled to be operated on Monday and carriers running flight services between India and the western countries avoided the Afghan airspace after it was declared “uncontrolled” by the Kabul airport authorities, senior officials said. The Air India flight was the only commercial service scheduled to be operated between India and Afghanistan on Monday. The national carrier is the only airline that has been operating flights between the two countries. Afghanistan stares at an uncertain future as President Ashraf Ghani left the country just before Kabul fell into the hands of the Taliban on Sunday. According to a NOTAM (notice to airmen)

issued by the Kabul airport authorities on Monday, the Afghan airspace has been released to the military and any aircraft transit through it “will be uncontrolled”. In another NOTAM, it was stated that the civilian side of the Kabul airport has been shut down until further notice. Therefore, all carriers operating flights between India and the wester n countries such as Air India, United Airlines and Terra Avia had to reroute their flights on Monday so as to avoid the Afghan airspace. Two Air India flights -- one from San Francisco to Delhi and another from Chicago to Delhi -- were diverted to Shar jah to avoid the Afghan airspace, senior officials stated. Both the planes were refuelled at the Sharjah airport before they departed for Delhi.

Ramesh contended that the Act is purportedly passed with the objective of reducing the financial burden on the exchequer as several tribunals have not resulted in faster adjudication as observed from data collected over the last three years. He added, however, the transfer of cases from such tribunals to the high courts, which also suffer from a huge pendency, defeats the purpose of tribunalisation.

This was supported by the Muslim League later, it said, adding that even a staunch “Hindutvawadi” like Veer Savarkar propagated the two-nation theory. The editorial said among the many reasons the Congress leaders supported the partition was that it could resolve the HinduMuslim conflict. “But that didn’t happen. The partition wasn’t part of any politics or agreed upon happily. The partition was due to the divide and rule policy of the British and unavoidable to secure freedom from the British rule,” it said. MUMBAI, AUG 16 (PTI): The Shiv Sena on Monday said the pain of partition will not go away by mere symbolism, days after Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced that August 14 will be observed as Partition Horrors Remembrance Day. “The present day rulers must take care that seeds of another partition should not be sown from the earlier pain,” an editorial in the Sena mouthpiece ‘Saamana’ said. It said the pain of partition remains even after 75 years, and BJP’s L K Advani is the only leader who is a witness to it. “The pain of partition will not go away by mere symbolism, but a definite action is needed,” the Marathi publication said. It said if Kashmiri Pandits were given their rights and homes in the Kashmir Valley, a lot could be achieved. “Just like the two countries were divided, hearts were also divided. nent company says, these offers are not a new phenomenon. Joining bonus up to Rs 6 lakh is common in the IT industry. “If a professional gets Rs 6 lakh as retaining bonus, he will have to pay around Rs 1 lakh as tax. The development has reversed the trend in the IT industry. The software professionals who once only focused on large companies are now keen on joining startups. Ta l k i n g t o I A N S, Subramanyam S, Founder, President and CEO of AscentHR explained, there is huge flow of capital into the IT ecosystem. Startups which do not have to really demonstrate profits and revenue and profitability, have started throwing in more money towards candidates.

The startups are suddenly throwing higher costs than larger industries are doing. Earlier, people were not joining startups because they were not comfortable and secure. Today, start-up ecosystems have become very attractive for talented people. They pay 1.75 to 2 times what larger industries are paying,” Subramanyam notes. Covid drew up the IT curve in the industry on how processes can be managed even when there is a calamity of not being able to put all workforces together, he adds. “We are seeing an upward trend in the industry. Muhyiddin Yassin

KUALA LUMPUR, AUG 16 (IANS): Malaysian Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin announced his resignation on Monday after losing majority support in the lower house of Parliament. In a televised speech, Muhyiddin said he and his cabinet had resigned as demanded by the federal constitution as he no longer enjoyed the support of the majority of MPs, reports Xinhua news agency. He explained that although he had initially sought to test his support in Parliament, the withdrawal of support by a dozen of MPs from his own coalition and the rejection of crossparty cooperation by the opposition had left him with no alternative. “With that, I have lost the support of the majority. So, there is no need for my legitimacy as prime minister to be determined in the parliament,” he said following a meeting with Malaysia’s King Sultan Abdullah Sultan Ahmad Shah. In a separate announcement, the National Palace confirmed that Sultan Abdullah has accepted Muhyiddin’s resignation. “His majesty accepted the letter of resignation from the most honourable Muhyiddin Yassin as prime minister and the posts of the entire cabinet with immediate effect today (Monday),” said the statement. “ W h e n yo u a d o p t someone’s culture you believe it to be superior and you end up becoming a slave to it,” he said, adding that it creates a system of mental salves that is worse than the actual slavery. In the same breath, he indirectly likened the ongoing upheaval in Afghanistan with the people of the country breaking the “shackles of slavery”. Khan said becoming a mental slave was worse than being an actual slave, adding that subjugated minds can never make big decisions. Pakistan is accused of facilitating the Taliban rebellion which ultimately resulted in the capturing of the country after being ousted about 20 years ago.

The Taliban Monday declared an end to the 20-year-long war in Afghanistan and claimed victory following the takeover of the presidential palace in Kabul and nearly all major cities, including Mazar-e-Sharif, Herat and Kandahar, amid the exit of the US-led forces. At the helm of this ‘win’ is the probable new Afghanistan president — the insurgent group’s leader Mullah Abdul Ghani Baradar. Baradar, a co-founder of the Taliban movement, is the group’s most public face and also its political chief, who oversaw the signing of the agreement for the US

ISLAMABAD, AUG 16 (PTI): Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan on Monday seemed to endorse the Taliban taking over Kabul by saying that Afghanistan has broken the “shackles of slavery” in the neighbouring war-torn country. US troops fired shots in the air at the Hamid Karzai International Airport to prevent hundreds of civilians running onto the tarmac after they took over Afghanistan’s air traffic control. Witnesses said it was not clear whether the victims were killed by gunshots or in a stampede. Footage published by Asvaka showed three stowaways falling to the deaths after clinging on to the wheels of a military plane as it took off from Kabul airport. Panicked Afghans were also seen climbing up the outside of an airbridge in a bid to get onboard planes and chasing a US military C-17 down the runway. How Covid affects the heart, according to a cardiologist

O

ur understanding of how Covid causes heart inflammation and injury to the heart muscle is becoming clearer. As the pandemic has progressed, researchers have begun to understand how COVID-19 impacts our bodies. Early in the pandemic, risk factors such as heart disease, high blood pressure and diabetes were quickly associated with an increased risk of severe illness and death from COVID. We now know that, among the myriad ways it can damage our health, the virus can affect the heart and directly cause a range of heart complications. Also, mRNA COVID vaccines like those from Pfizer and Moderna have been linked with heart inflammation. But this is very rare, and you’re much more likely to get heart inflammation from COVID infection than the vaccines. How does COVID affect the heart? The SARS-CoV-2 virus can directly invade the body causing inflammation. This can impact the heart, causing myocarditis and pericarditis — inflammation of the heart muscle or

outer lining of the heart. Inflammation from COVID can also cause blood clotting, which can block a heart or brain artery causing a heart attack or stroke. COVID can also cause abnormal heart rhythms, blood clots in the legs and lungs, and heart failure. Our understanding of how COVID causes heart inflammation and injury to the heart muscle is becoming clearer, though there’s more to learn. Persistent symptoms from the virus, called “long COVID”, have been reported in about 10-30% of people who’ve contracted COVID. One study on long COVID, published in July, found common cardiovascular symptoms include heart palpitations, fast heart rate, slow heart rate, chest

pain, visible bulging veins, and fainting. Of roughly 3,700 study participants, over 90% reported their recovery lasted more than eight months. The Delta variant, first identified in India in October 2020, is highly transmissible. It’s the variant responsible for lockdowns in New South Wales, Victoria and Queensland. Although data is still emerging, it may cause more severe disease, and anecdotally may increase the chances of heart complications. A Scottish study found the risk of hospital admission from COVID was around double in those with Delta variant compared to the Alpha variant (which originated in the UK). It also found Delta was spreading most com-

monly in younger people. The good news is two doses of either the Pfizer or AstraZeneca vaccines remains effective in preventing Delta complications. Belief in ‘herd immunity’ was biggest illusion, paved way for 2nd Covid wave, experts say COVID vaccines and the heart Scientists have discovered a link between the Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine and a rare blood clotting syndrome. There’s also a link between mRNA COVID vaccines and a rare side effect of heart inflammation (myocarditis and pericarditis). This seems to be most common in males under 30 and after the second vaccine dose. But this is very rare. Of the 5.6 million Pfizer vaccine doses administered to Australians so far, there have only been 111 cases of suspected (not confirmed) heart inflammation reported up to August 1. There have been no reported deaths associated with this vaccine side effect in Australia. Recovery from this heart inflammation is generally good. The benefits of vaccination against COVID

far outweigh the potential risks of these generally mild conditions. Nevertheless, if you experience any change in symptoms after having a COVID vaccine, including chest pain, an irregular heartbeat, fainting or shortness of breath, you should seek prompt medical attention. The vast majority of people with heart conditions are safe to get vaccinated. But if you have had myocarditis or pericarditis in the past six months then speak with your doctor or cardiologist. Don’t delay getting your heart checked Many people have been reluctant to seek medical attention amid the pandemic. This includes for both urgent and routine care of heart disease. Longer delays between the onset of the symptoms and hospital treatment are being reported in countries including England, Italy and China. This makes long-term heart damage more likely. Medvedev, Giorgi win Canada titles TO RO N TO, AU G 1 6 ( AG E N C I E S ) : D a n i i l Medvedev and Camila Giorgi capped impressive weeks in Canada - and laid down markers for the coming weeks on US hard courts - by taking the titles in Toronto and Montreal respectively. Medvedev reinforced his status as one of the sport’s premier hard-court players, as well as one of the biggest favourites for the US Open, with victory at the ATP Toronto Masters. A l s o o n S u n d a y, Giorgi reminded everyone of her elite-level abilities with a stunning victory at the WTA 1000 event in Montreal. The Italian beat No.4 seed Karolina Pliskova 6-3 7-5 to win the biggest title of her career, completing a giant-killing week with the loss of just one set. Medvedev was similarly dominant in Toronto, beating Reilly Opelka for the fourth time in five meetings thanks to a 6-4 6-3 triumph. It came a day after he dismantled a similarly tall, big-serving American in John Isner, a match during

Daniil Medvedev

which he surrendered just four games and completed in a brisk 54 minutes. T h e wo r l d N o. 2 continues to produce his best during the Nor th American summer hardcourt season. He reached the final of the last edition of the C a n a d i a n M a s t e r s, i n Montreal in 2019, before going on to win the Cincinnati Masters and the US Open final that same year. In 2020, he returned to the US Open semifinals, and has now claimed his fourth ATP Masters title – all of which have come on hard courts – with his latest success in Canada.

Camila Giorgi

“With Masters, with Novak and Rafael playing, it seemed like an untouchable achievement. Now I have four wins in five finals, which is a good score,” said Medvedev, who committed only 13 unforced errors to Opelka’s 34. “I’m just happy. I want to achieve more, I want to play better.” Despite the loss it was an impressive week for Opelka, who beat Nick Kyrgios, Grigor Dimitrov, Lloyd Har ris, Rober to Bautista Agut and Stefanos Tsitsipas to reach his first ATP Masters final. Giorgi, meanwhile, has been a player on tennis fans’ radar for years, dating back

to when she stunned world No.8 Caroline Wozniacki in the third round of the 2013 US Open as a qualifier ranked outside the top 100. Since then she has increased her tally of victories against top-10 opponents to 12, and been ranked as high as 26th, but had never displayed consistency to match her powerful, high-risk ball striking. She dropped her only set of the tour nament to Jessica Pegula in the semifinals, and beat seeds E l i s e M e r t e n s, Pe t r a Kvitova, Coco Gauff and Pliskova to win just the third title of her career – and by far the biggest.

with Seales to see the West Indies home on 168-9. Roach said his unbeaten 30 was the most important innings of his 66test career “by far, by far.” He was full of praise for the batting and bowling efforts of the 19-year-old Seales, who became the youngest West Indies bowler to take a five-wicket haul in a test innings. “He is a star for the future,” Roach said. “His five wickets speaks wonders about our cricket.” Shaheen Afridi (4-

50) and Hasan Ali (3-37) bowled almost 34 overs for Pakistan on the last day and shared seven wickets. Hasan produced an outstanding allround performance, scoring 28 from 26 balls at No. 9 to help Pakistan go past 200 in the second innings before he was the last man out. He then dismissed Blackwood for 55 to deal a major blow to the home team’s hopes and bowled Holder (16). But Hasan was also involved in one of the pivotal moments of the match when he dropped

Hasan still had a part to play by dismissing Jomel Warrican to leave the West Indies on 151-9, some 17 runs from victory and with only Roach and Seales remaining. Warrican tried to pull a short delivery and the ball flew from the top edge. Wicketkeeper Mohammad Rizwan turned and dashed backward, almost to the boundary where he took a diving catch as the ball came over his shoulder. Roach batted on with unbreakable determination to eke out ever y r un. With six runs needed, he edged a ball between the wicketkeeper and first slip which just eluded Rizwan’s despairing dive. He then confidently struck a ball from Shaheen, wide of off stump, through cover for the winning runs.

Seales earlier took 5-55, his first five-wicket haul in Tests, as the West Indies dismissed Pakistan for 203 in its second innings, a lead of 167. The home team then slumped to 16-3 before a half-century by Jermaine Blackwood helped it advance to 111-6. The match was in the balance when Jason Holder was out to the last ball before the tea interval with the West Indies on 114-7, still 54 runs from victory. 2nd Test: India beat Eng by 151 runs at Lord’s

LO N D O N, AU G 1 6 (PTI): India’s world class pace attack pulled off an incredible heist with the bat and then a magnificent performance with the ball to decimate England by 151 runs in the second Test here on Monday. The fifth day at the hallowed Lord’s was as good an exhibition of Test cricket with India bowling out England for 120 as they tried to bat it out without going for a chase of 272 in 60 overs. Mohammed Shami (56 no & 1/13 in 10 overs) and Jasprit Bumrah (34 & 3/33 in 15 overs) played innings of their lives and then rocked the England top-order, before Ishant Sharma (2/13 in 10 overs) and Mohammed Siraj (4/32) played their part to perfection to give the visitors a 1-0 lead in the five-match series. This is India’s third Test match win at Lord’s having won earlier in 1986 and 2014 series and they now have six points in the World Test Championship. It could have been six down soon had Virat Kohli held onto the catch provided by Jos Buttler at first sip but it evaded his reverse cupped palms and Moeen Ali’s edge didn’t matter as Ravindra Jadeja over-stepped. But then Siraj bowled couple of superb successive outgoing deliveries to get Moeen (13) and Sam Curran (0) to make it 90 for 7 before picking up the final wicket of James Anderson. Earlier, from a situation where a defeat looked imminent after Rishabh

Pant’s (22) early dismissal, Shami and Bumrah displayed never before seen resolve in a record stand with Ishant (16) also making a nice little contribution. The tail-enders between themselves accumulated 106 runs. Wi t h M a r k Wo o d bowling with deep point and deep mid-wicket, the singles came easily and both of them showed copybook forward defence to Moeen, someone who has troubled the top-order regularly. Manchester City start title defence with defeat LONDON, AUG 16 (AP): Son Heung-min made up for the absence of Harry Kane by scoring a second-half winner to give Tottenham a 1-0 win over defending champion Manchester City on Sunday in their opening game of the Premier League season. With Kane left out of Tottenham’s team altogether amid continued speculation about a pending move to City, Son led the attack instead and showed that Spurs still have a top-class scorer to count on. Son finished off a quick counterattack in the 55th minute and Tottenham effectively neutralized City’s many attacking threats to give new manager Nuno Espirito Santo a statement victory on his debut. Kane’s absence was the big pregame talking point, although Nuno insisted the decision was made solely because the England striker only returned to full training on Friday after his holiday. Kane has reportedly told Tottenham he wants to leave, with City manager Pep Guardiola previously acknowledging that his

club is “very interested” in buying him. Based on this performance, City’s expensively assembled squad could use a finisher — especially after letting Sergio Aguero leave on a free transfer this summer. City dominated possession but struggled to break down a disciplined Tottenham side, which was content to sit back and wait for opportunities to counter. City’s record signing Jack Grealish showed early flashes of his abilities — breaking forward in the

opening minutes to draw a free kick just outside the area — but missed his best chance to score when his shot from a tight angle was easily saved by Hugo Lloris in the 75th. Riyad Mahrez had City’s best chance of the game in the 35th when he met a cross from Raheem Sterling but shot wide after failing to cleanly connect with the ball. Son had already threatened on a couple of counters by the time he put Spurs ahead. The

South Korea international collected the ball down the right flank, drove at defender Nathan Ake and then cut inside to bend a low shot inside the far post. Steven Bergwijn had a great chance to double the lead on another counterattack just before the hour mark, but shot wide. Guardiola brought Kevin de Bruyne off the bench in search of an equalizer and the Belgian forced a save from Lloris with a dipping shot from distance in the 84th.

the helmet by Wood but he manfully carried on concentrating even more. But by then, Bumrah’s defence and Shami’s attack had piled on England frustrations which led to some on-field altercation between the two Indians and rival skipper Root and his premier pacer Anderson. Robinson also had a lot to say to Indian batsmen and when it was his turn to bat, the Indian captain was at his ears giving him a mouthful, calling him a “big mouth” and someone who is “only fit to play in England”. Finally Bumrah got him with a straight delivery and Siraj came back to wrap up a Test that would be remembered in times to come. BRIEF SCORES: India 364 and 298/8 in 109.3 overs (Ajinkya Rahane 61, Mohammed Shami 56 not out, Cheteshwar Pujara 45, Jasprit Bumrah 34 not out, Mark Wood 3/51, Ollie Robinson 2/45, Moeen Ali 2/84) vs England 391 and 120 all out in 51.5 overs (Joe Root 33; Siraj 4/32 Bumrah 3/33).

We now know the power of sports science: IOA vice-president Mittal NEW DELHI, AUG 16 (IANS): Indian Olympic Association (IOA) vicepresident Sudhanshu Mittal on Monday showered praise on Indian athletes, who won medals in Tokyo, saying he had tears of joy in his eyes when he watched javelin star Neeraj Chopra on the podium at the main stadium of the Olympics. Indian athletes returned from Tokyo with a haul of seven medals, including javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra’s historic gold in track and field. It was the country’s best-ever show at the Olympics. The men’s hockey team also ended a long 41-year wait for an Olympic medal by winning bronze while PV Sindhu became the first Indian female athlete to win back-to-back medals at the Games. Neeraj, Lovlina, Ravi and Bajrang managed to get medals in their maiden appearance at the Olympics. Speaking to IANS, Mittal said, “There was a time when hockey was the only sport which was ruling

the nation. Then came cricket, but now other sports too are gaining popularity. Shooting, wrestling, and boxing also came into the limelight.” “My eyes got wet when after 125 years, the Indian flag got hoisted high at the main stadium of the Olympics. I felt so proud when Neeraj clinched gold. 1896 was when the Olympics started but to date never it happened that our national anthem was played at the main stadium in the Olympics. We won in hockey; the ceremony was held in a hockey stadium. We won in the shooting;

the ceremony took place in the shooting arena. But this was the first time that the main stadium witnessed our success.” The Indian Olympic Association vice-president further said that in the coming 25 years, India will gather more speed and success in sports. “India now knows the reason why they were failing...sports science. I think the critical difference between excellence and podium is sports science. It plays an important role in athletes’ performance. Players movements, muscle, dietician, psychologist, these are the things which will help athletes in major events. Now that India is aware of all this, I am sure in the next 25 years India will be a huge power in sports,” he said. “We have no shortage of talent. After 75 years of Independence, India got a record (haul) of seven medals in Tokyo. I believe that it will keep growing in the coming years. The government is supporting in all manner,” he added.

Federer pulls out of US Open

AFC Cup: Bengaluru FC beat Club Eagles; advance to group stage

ZURICH, AUG 16 (IANS): Swiss tennis legend Roger Federer has announced on Instagram that he will miss the US Open, beginning August 30, and “many months” after undergoing knee surgery. “I just wanted to give you a bit of an update [on] what’s been going on since Wimbledon. As you can imagine, it’s not been simple. I’ve been doing a lot of checks with the doctors as well on my knee, getting all the information as I hurt myself further during the grass-court season and Wimbledon,” Federer said in a video posted late on Sunday, which was also put up on atptour.com. “That’s just not the way to go forward, so unfortunately they told me for the medium to long term to feel better, I will need surgery. I decided to do it,” said the winner of 20 Grand Slam titles. The Swiss star, who turned 40 on August 8, underwent arthroscopic right knee surgeries in February 2020 and May 2020.

MALE (MALDIVES), AUG 16 (IANS): Indian Super League (ISL) club Bengaluru FC qualified for the AFC Cup (Group D, South Zone) after registering a 1-0 win over Club Eagles of Maldives at the National Stadium here on Sunday evening. New signing Jayesh Rane scored the winner in the 26th minute. The Sunil Chhetri-led Bengaluru FC now join fellow ISL side ATK Mohun Bagan ( AT K M B ) , M a l d i v e s ’ Maziya Sports & Recreation and Bangladesh’s Bashundhara Kings in Group D, which kicks off on August 18 with their match against (ATKMB). The first real threat from Bengaluru FC came in the 11th minute when Cleiton Silva whipped a nice ball in from a corner and Alan Costa nodded it to a dangerous area where Yrondu MusavuKing headed it goal-wards only to find the Maldivian goalkeeper Mohamed Faisal. The very next minute,

The members of the India men’s hockey team that won a bronze after 41 also chatted with the PM, who was seen examining a h o c k e y s t i c k . A l s o, present was the wrestling contingent, which returned from the Olympics with two medals. Ravi Dahiya won a silver and Bajrang Punia a bronze medal. Vinesh Phogat who has been suspended by the WFI for indiscipline was also present along with young Anshu Malik, Seema

Bisla and coach Jagmander Singh. The other medallist included weightlifter M i r a b a i C h a nu , w h o opened India’s account at the Games on the first day competitions with a silver medal and bronze winning boxer Lovlina Borgohain. The women’s hockey team that exceeded all expectation by reaching its maiden Olympic semifinal was also present alongside the boxing, shooting and athletics contingents.

Bengaluru FC made another good move. Skipper Chhetri ran in from the left and put the ball in deftly from the edge of the box. Silva stretched himself aerially and managed to meet the ball but he wasn’t in control of his effort and the ball sailed over the crossbar. The 2018/19 ISL champions broke the deadlock in the 26th minute. A throw-in from Sarthak Golui into the box came off the head of a Maldivian player and the ball fell to an unmarked Rane who made no mistake and beat the goalkeeper to put Bengaluru FC ahead.

In the second half, Bengaluru FC controlled the game and didn’t give any opportunity whatsoever for the Maldivians to come back. All this until the 67th minute when the Eagles came dangerously close to scoring: after dodging successfully two Bengaluru FC defenders, a Maldivian attacker failed to finish to perfection as his shot went off target. In the 84th minute, Bengaluru FC got close to scoring their second goal. Chhetri found substitute Augustine in the box but the latter’s curler narrowly went over the crossbar.
