3rd wave: Next 100 days crucial, warns Govt NEW DELHI, JUL 16 (AGENCIES): Niti Aayog member (health) VK Paul on Friday said the warning about the third wave of the Covid-19 pandemic which the World Health Organization has recently issued is for the global situation, which indeed is reflecting the impact of the third wave. “Leaving North and South American regions of WHO, all other WHO regions are moving from good to bad and bad to worse. The world is moving towards a third wave and this is a fact. Prime Minister Narendra Modi too has asked us to take this as a red flag... the PM has given us the target to stall the third wave and it is possible,” Dr Paul said during the press briefing of the Union health ministry. Spain has seen a 64% hike in weekly Covid-19 cases while the Netherlands has recorded a 300% spike in Covid-19 cases. The situation was stable in Thailand for a long time but now it is also reporting a spike. Africa too has clocked a 50%
‘India likely to see 1 lakh cases daily’ It is likely that India will see almost 1 lakh cases every single day with the onset of the third wave of the viral infection in August, “sometime towards the end”, a senior scientist at the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) has said. “In the current situation, if the virus doesn’t mutate to lead to more transmissibility, the situation will be similar to the first wave,” Prof. Samiran Panda told India Today TV. He however added that if the virus mutates further, then the situation could be worse. Professor Panda is head of the division of epidemiology and communicable diseases at the ICMR. He said mathematical modelling done by the ICMR and the Imperial College London has indicated that low vaccination rates and easing restrictions will lead to a possible surge in Covid-19 case. However, this may not be as severe as the second wave. increase in Covid-19 cases, the ministry said. Myanmar, Malaysia, Indonesia, Bangladesh too are now seeing an unprecedented spike, the ministry said. Far away from herd immunity: “Our population is still vulnerable. We have not reached herd immunity-not even through infection; Not that we want to achieve herd immunity through natural infection. We are making continuous progress in vac-
cination. At least 50 per cent of our vulnerable population is vaccinated. So we are still vulnerable. But the situation as of now is under control and we will have to maintain this situation,” Dr Paul said adding that the next 100 days will be crucial to understand whether the 3rd wave has arrived in India or not. “Waves are a post-facto evaluation of how we are managing the situation. The intensity of the waves is more
important than the number of the wave. So it does not matter whether it is the 3rd wave or the 4th wave, as this is the natural interaction between virus and human being,” Health ministry joint secretary Lav Agarwal said. Mask usage will go down: The Health ministry has cautioned against the declining usage of masks among people and said that the second wave, though limited in a few pockets, is not yet over. With the resumption of activities, mask usage is declining, joint secretary of the Health ministry Lav Agarwal said during the weekly press meet of the ministry. In a graph, which projected the decline in mask usage, it was revealed that mask usage spiked during MarchApril and reached its peak in May, which witnessed the peak of the second wave, but now the trend has been on a steady decline in June and July. As projected, the usage of masks will decline further, against which the government warned.

He said time for preparation had been given and a decision would be taken later. 25% vaccination in Civil Sectt: Considering the poor vaccination coverage in Nagaland Civil secretariat here and directorate offices, HPC decided that attendance of employees and staffs would be based on their vaccination status. registration of societies and debar those found to be collecting money from public. Therie said the PDA government was supporting collections through its policy to facilitate and support the peace process. He said as per the constitution, no society is allowed to collect money from public unless approved by the elected members. Therie slammed DC Kohima, for not giving permission to his party to hold the protest rally in Kohima even after an undertaking to follow covid protocols. He said the DC Dimapur had allowed holding of the protest rally in Dimapur under strict covid protocols. Therie said what is being highlighted (fuel hikes) is not a Congress issue but people’s issue and whether
DC Kohima was trying to please “somebody”? Meanwhile, responding to a query on Congress’ activities, Therie said the agitation was not for the party alone. Since price rise was affecting everyone, people should come out and voice their opposition together against it. Earlier, NPCC submitted a memorandum to the governor through commissioner & secretary. The memorandum stated that in the last two months alone Government of India had hiked fuel prices 35 times in more than 200 cities, which led to petrol prices touching more that Rs 100 per litre. Even in Nagaland, petrol prices crossed Rs 100 per litre in all the 12 districts, it claimed. (Cont’d on p-6)

I have discussed it with my Assam counterpart Hemanta Biswa Sarma and we have agreed to go for an out-of-court solution to all issues related to our boundaries. “In fact, we have already started working on the ground. If everything goes well in the next few months, we may see some concrete results towards instilling peace permanently along our boundaries,” the CMO official said quoting the chief minister. Inter-state boundary disputes between Assam, Mizoram, Nagaland, Tripura, Meghalaya, Manipur and Arunachal Pradesh during the past several years have witnessed many violent activities and skirmishes among security forces and the people living along the boundaries of these states.

Italy bid to host Euro 2028 or World Cup 2030
KOHIMA, JUL 16 (NPN): Nagaland Pradesh Congress Committee (NPCC) has accused the PDA coalition government of trying to delay solution by setting up the Core Committee on Naga political issue to facilitate “ongoing peace talks” when the Interlocutor had in 2019, announced that “all negotiations have officially concluded on October 31,2019”. The Interlocutor who is also Governor of Nagaland
R.N. Ravi had in his speech at the inaugural session of the state assembly in February 2021 also repeated the same. Talking to media persons, NPCC president K. Therie asked what was the point in constituting the Core Committee when talks concluded for Nagaland? He also asked why was the PDA government including the legislative assembly wasting people’s time and money for a redundant purpose? He said since both the government of India and the
governor of Nagaland have reiterated that talks have concluded, then the chief minister ought to have stood in line towards solution. Therie said formation of Core Committee and earlier the JLF, were delay tactics to “please Muivah and NSCN (I-M)”. By doing so, he said the state government was ignoring the entire people of Nagaland- the GBs Federation, tribal hohos, political parties and all those who want early solution. Therie asked whether
the government was afraid of Nagas or NSCN (I-M) as by delaying solution Nagas of Nagaland are suffering. In an emotionally charged voice, Therie said people of Nagaland will have to come to terms one day, that even after 24 years of negotiation solution still eludes them. He said it was a shame that after 24 years of negotiation there is still no solution. In comparison, he said the 16 Point Agreement was settled after only three meetings and the 9 Point
