Dr. Jamir asks media to play futuristic role
Dr. SC Jamir (NP) Staff Reporter
D I M A P U R , N OV 1 6 (NPN): Veteran Naga politician and recent Padma Shree awardee Dr. SC Jamir has urged upon the media in the state to focus attention towards the welfare of the common people by highlighting their problems instead of focussing mostly on speeches of politicians. He called upon the media to remind people that they are living in 21stcentury and should prepare for 22nd century. “Nagas should have a forwardlooking attitude, vision and thinking,” and therefore urged Nagas to script a new history. The 90-year-old Dr. Jamir, the five-time chief minister of Nagaland and who had a prolonged stint
as governor of Goa, Maharashtra, Gujarat and Odisha from 2004 to 2018, and the only surviving member of the Naga People’s Convention (NPC) which negotiated the 16 Point Agreement with the government of India in 1960, also called for a harmonious relationship between the media and people. Dr. Jamir was speaking as guest speaker on the occasion of National Press Day organised by DPC at DBIDL Hall here on Tuesday. He also urged upon the press to be messengers of truth, reality and unity among Naga people even as rapid advances in the field of science and technology have made today’s society “information society”. He spoke of the role of Right To Information (RTI) Act that was paramount for society while reminding media about the Fundamental Rights (FR) enshrined in the Constitution of India. Dr. Jamir however pointed out that certain restrictions were being put on these rights in the name of security, decency, morality. He noted “Though there is freedom of press and freedom of expression, there are areas where we cannot go beyond.”
He also maintained that even though democracy provided citizens freedom and rights, these had to be complemented with certain obligation and responsibilities. He said unlimited freedom of speech and expression could become dangerous beyond a particular point. On his vision for Nagaland, Dr. Jamir held the belief that Nagas were living in a confused world. He explained that the peculiar feature of Nagaland was that “Though we speak about advancement in science and technology, Nagas are too much obsessed with the past.” Dr. Jamir also pointed out that Nagas generally only talk of politics and completely neglecting economic development, social reformation and cultural enlightenment. He said there was need to move away from this trend. He also mentioned that Nagas have two identities- a Naga identity and Christian identity. According to Dr. Jamir Naga identity was manifest in honesty, courage, bravery and endurance, while Christian identity was manifest in love, peace, goodwill and harmony.

16-Point Agreement not a hurdle: Jamir
The oldest living veteran Naga politician Dr SC Jamir reiterated that 16-Point Agreement was not a hurdle in the resolution of Naga problem. He said this while interacting with media at DBIDL Hall here on Tuesday on the occasion of National Press Day. Dr. Jamir said “We are already a part of Constitution of India due to the 16-Point Agreement” and underlined that the Government of India (GoI) had agreed to hold further negotiations to resolve the Naga political problem. Dr. Jamir said if at all the 16-Point Agreement was a hurdle, then the government of India would have refused to negotiate for solution to the Naga issue. He also narrated the chronology of events that ultimately led to creation of Nagaland. Jamir recalled that a draft was placed before representatives of 16 tribes at the third Naga National Convention held at Mokokchung in 1959. After five days of discussion, he said a unanimous resolution was passed wherein it was agreed to ne(Cont’d on p-8) gotiate with the government

of India and the outcome was the creation of Nagaland on the basis of 16-Point Agreement. Asked what would be solution the Nagas and whether they should leave the demand for sovereignty, Jamir said that neither the Framework Agreement of August 3, 2015 nor the Agreed Position of November 17, 2017 made any mention of sovereignty or integration. He remarked that those who were fighting for sovereignty and integration had perhaps realised that sovereignty was not possible under the present political context and hence signed the agreements without any mention of sovereignty. He also referred to the meeting of leaders of all Naga political groups held at Agri Expo on February 29, 2012 wherein late Khole Konyak had in his speech, lauded Th. Muivah “for his honesty and courage in declaring at the three-day meeting at Niathu Resort in 2011 that independence in the international context and integration of Naga areas in India and Myanmar was not possible”.

NU has grown quantitatively and qualitatively: Gov Mukhi D I M A P U R , N OV 1 6 (NPN): Governor of Assam and Nagaland, Prof. Jagdish Mukhi, who is also the chief rector of Nagaland University (NU), during his visit to the NU Headquarters at Lumami on Tuesday, said that NU has grown quantitatively and qualitatively ever since its inception in 1994 despite the challenges of geography, transport and communication. Speaking at the function, the governor said that the University stands for encouraging and empowering the young minds to be enlightened citizens to take care of the needs of society, a DIPR report stated. Mukhi expressed belief that the University has been providing quality education to the young minds to make them capable of protecting and preserving the traditional values of Nagaland in terms of honesty, simplicity, hard work, commitment, love, compassion and fraternity. The University campuses, the governor said were committed towards achieving a single goal of transforming the University into a centre of excellent and vibrant knowledge de-

spite being geographically dispersed. Underscoring India’s pledge to achieve net zero carbon emissions by 2070, Prof. Mukhi said that rainforest of North East and Nagaland would help in fulfilling the voluntary commitment in meeting global environment needs by achieving the objective of net zero and reducing the use of fossil fuel. He said that the need for rainforest, which provides fresh oxygen, was desperately felt during the second wave of the pandemic. He said that the University must strive towards protecting and preserving the sustainable lifestyle values for the present as well as future generation. Prof. Mukhi suggested that each campus
adopt five villages as model village. Further, touching upon the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, the governor stated the policy was designed with the will of the people by considering the needs and requirements and with an aim to creating innovative mind and a pool of job givers. He expressed hope that the NU, with determination and commitment, would be able to implement the NEP 2020 in the next academic session. He suggested short term skillbased programmes for that. Governor also emphasized on the importance of agriculture in the state considering the limitations of other industries. (Cont’d on p-8)
NH affirms to stand by ‘White Paper on Naga Integration’ DIMAPUR, NOV 16 (NPN): Naga Hoho (NH) Tuesday affirmed to stand by its “White Paper on Naga Integration”, which was published in 2002 and approved by the Federal Assembly, and continue to stand on the foundation of Naga history. In a press release, NH president HK Zhimomi and general secretary K Elu Ndang said that “White Paper on Naga Integration”, which was widely accepted by every Naga tribe, stands as the “testimony of who Nagas were, is and will be.” Seeking to place on record its standpoint with special reference to “Indo-Naga political issues visa-vis conflicting outlook of Naga society”, the NH said that since there was “not a single absolute mandated Naga organization” at
the moment, it was “illogical” to denounce each other based on “vested and regional interest leaving aside the larger Naga issues.” During the darkest period of Naga history where killings became the norm of the day, NH said the Naga elders and intellectuals, realizing the need for a collective effort to usher in peace and a voice for unified Naga Homeland without borders, came together and gave birth to Naga Hoho. Till today, NH said it stands firmly on the foundation of Nagas political and historical rights for self-determination and recognition of Naga homeland. Asserting that it was mandated to pursue and mediate for unity among various Naga political groups and early “Indo-Naga” political settlement, NH said that
any political solutions without inclusive of Naga ancestral land and its people were, therefore, not acceptable to the Nagas. “This has been endorsed by the Naga leaders from different tribes before the emergence of new organisations in recent times,” NH said. NH termed as “unfortunate” that there were “some groups of people” who claim to represent some sections of the society and “has been continuously spiting venom against the Naga Hoho.” However, the hoho said that Nagas’ struggle for self-determination for more than 70 years was for a common homeland under one administration and not based on the “artificial boundaries demarcated by British-India and Burma.” (Cont’d on p-8)

tary Tenyesinlo Bukh stated that many government colleges in the state were “functioning perilously” without lectures in all departments. Further, ANCSU also expressed dismay that Fazl Ali College and Mount Tiyi College were functioning without principal for more than months, which it said “directly invite chaos in the institution.” The union has, therefore, appealed to the responsible authority to immediately appoint principals in FAC and MTC.
DIMAPUR, NOV 16 (NPN): State government has decided to introduce the payment of salaries and wages through e-pay bill system. According to a DIPR report, the decision was made based on a comprehensive data on employees collected from all departments by the personal information management system (PIMS) Cell, personnel and administrative reforms (P&AR) department. Effective from the month
of November 2021, it said payment of salaries and wages under e- pay bill would be enabled only for government employees who have been registered in the PIMS database. The process of building up the PIMS database started in 2016 with the cooperation of all the departments and trainings have been imparted to all DDOs and bill assistants on the functioning of the e-Pay bill system. As such, the government said it was expected that remuneration
payment for employees on e-Pay bill system would be smooth and would also receive the necessary support and commitment from all concerned to make it successful. Difficulties, if any, could be brought to the notice of the PIMS Cell, P&AR and Finance department. All the departments have been directed to strictly adhere to the procedures and guidelines issued by the P&AR department for updating the employees’ details /data in the PIMS portal.
SARFAESI Act: CNCCI welcomes govt’s move to introduce Bill D I M A P U R , N OV 1 6 (NPN): Confederation of Nagaland Chambers of Commerce and Industry (CNCCI) has expressed its gratitude to the State government for its move to table a Bill in connection with implementation of SARFAESI Act during Winter Session of the Assembly (NLA). CNCCI chairman Dr Khekugha Muru and general secretary Dr Seyievilie Mor in a statement recalled that they had been demanding implementation of the Act for the past three years,
had written several letters to the chief minister and chief secretary, even imposed one-day State-wide shutterdown strike on September 16 this year, followed by submission of letters to chief secretary by all 12 district chambers of commerce & industry seeking immediate implementation of the Act. They said NLA’s Select Committee headed by chief minister Neiphiu Rio gave a public statement and assured that SARFAESI Act would be tabled in upcoming session.
Noting that implementation of the SARFAESI Act had been pending in Nagaland for almost last two decades and was to see its fruition, the CNCCI leaders appealed to all the legislators and political parties to support implementation of the Act as this would usher in enormous changes in the lives of Naga entrepreneurs, business community and economy of the State. Acknowledging Nagaland Bar Association for its valuable opinions and appreciating it for taking active
participation in the public debate, the duo pointed out that tribal States like Meghalaya had already successfully implemented the Act in tune with customary land holding practices of the tribal inhabitants of the State. Consequently, they said the Nagaland government too had made it clear that the Act would be implemented in consonance with Article 371 (A). Therefore, they appealed to everyone to give the Act a chance to be implemented. (Cont’d on p-8)

D I M A P U R : We s t e r n Sumi Hoho (WSH) president Shikaho Zhimomi has expressed appreciation to the Assam Rifles “for resolving the friction” during the sports meet organised by the Ato Area Sports Association, which falls under WSH umbrella. WSH said that Dimapur town and its suburb was a never-ending cooking pot of people from different ethnicity, tribes, occupations, religion, etc, and also the operating base of so many NGOs and political groups. Ensuring overall security and at the same time maintaining a robust public relationship mechanism was, in itself, a tight ropewalk, WSH said. However, WSH said it was commendable that the Assam Rifles have efficient and professional in being able to maintain a fine balance, adding that the force had been rendering invaluable service to the public within the WSH jurisdiction by identifying itself with the local population and helping in the socio-economic upliftment of the people. WSH said Assam Rifles, which has been functioning for over 185 years and being heralded as the “Sentinels of the North East” and “Friends of the Hill people”, have “truly lived up to its reputation as the premier and the oldest para military force of our country.” While lauding the professionalism of AR rank and file, WSH expressed gratitude and appreciation Rifles for always helping the people.

number of efficient, smart and capable officers and that the State government, policy makers and the implementers should give more focus to the department, Metha said. the rest of the media fraternity observed the National Press Day at Hotel Eastgate here on Tuesday, with renowned peace activist Niketu Iralu and associate editor of Morung Express Dr. Moalemba Jamir as the guest speakers. Deliberating on the topic “Who is not afraid of Media?”, Iralu said freedom of the press guaranteed in the constitution was now being subjected to crippling manipulations with impunity in different parts of the country. This, he said revealed “fear and wilful determination to put what I want first before what was right for all and the world.” Citing from World Press Freedom Index, 2021 where India ranked 142 out of 180 nations, Iralu said this gives a picture of where things in the country stands
and where it was headed. He added that India ranking lower than countries like Philippines (138) run by Duterte and just a few places higher than countries like Myanmar and Russia (150) had revealed the extent of damage done to the freedom of press. “We are seeing narcissistic autocrats of the Left and Right rejecting government by the free will of the people and for the people, based on the rule of law, no longer concealing their iron fists. This trend is spreading menacingly across the globe,” Iralu said. He observed that the geopolitical and racial location of “our homeland” was going to either be a curse or a nearunique exciting opportunity. Iralu said Nagaland was stuck between superpowers India and China
and that their growth would shape us in ways we would find extremely difficult to correctly cope with. However, he said our crisis would not impinge on them except the most ethnically sensitive and humanist among them. On that note he said, although Nagas were fragile they were fiercely self-conscious ethnic minority and therefore they would have to learn how to work out how to survive and grow properly instead of destroying themselves by their panicky responses to the challenges that may come. Associate editor of Morung Express, Dr. Moalemba Jamir in his speech said a person do not need to fear the media if they have not done anything wrong. He added that since media houses in Nagaland were dependent on the government advertisements to generate their revenue, he said government should clear the pending bills. He said the dependency of media houses on the government in the State was because there was no significant corporate sector. KPC president Alice Yhoshü delivered the keynote address and also announced the KPC Impact Journalism Award 2021 which was awarded to principal correspondent of Mo-

rung Express, Imkong Walling. She disclosed that after a thorough scrutiny by KPC, Walling was chosen for the award after his extensive works in highlighting problems in the energy sector in the State. Earlier, the programme was chaired by KPC general secretary, Atono Tsükrü Kense while invocation was pronounced by Rana Chetri. MPC: Mokokchung Press Club also observed the day by hosting a small programme at Hotel Metsüben with editor Ao Milen, Akangnungsang Jamir as the special guest. In a brief programme, MPC president, Limalenden Longkumer welcomed everyone and gave a short significance of the day. In his speech, the special guest said that the fourth estate has a big responsibility in voicing the opinions of the people. He also said that reporters and media persons should not merely be considered as photographers or event reporters but journalists should live upto their mark and work with zeal towards quality news. Concluding remarks of the event was given by MPC secretary, Sashimeren Jamir, which was followed by an open discussion on the day’s theme “Who is not afraid of Media?”

‘Racist’ comments by TV host sparks outrage GUWAHATI, NOV 16 (PTI): Purported racist comments by a host of a television reality show against a participant from Assam has sparked outrage, with Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Tuesday calling it a “shameful” incident and asserting that racism has no place in the country. In a video clip that has gone viral, Raghav Juyal, host of ‘Dance Deewane’ show aired on Colors channel, was seen introducing a young participant from Guwahati in a “Chinese” gibberish, using words like ‘momo’ and ‘chowmein’. Judges of the show, including actor Madhuri Dixit and choreographer Remo D’Souza, along with the audience were seen laughing at this. Juyal, however, later shared another video on Twitter where the participant, Gunjan Sinha, was seen telling Dixit that she likes to speak Chinese and then the host shares some light moments with the participant by conversing with her in the gibberish. “This is what happened
Raghav Juyal actually,” Juyal said in the post. Reacting to the controversy, Sarma tweeted, “It has come to my notice that a popular reality show host has used racist rhetoric against a young participant from Guwahati. This is shameful and totally unacceptable. Racism has no place in our country and we should all condemn it unequivocally.” TIPRA chairman Pradyot Bikram Manikya Deb Barma also condemned the incident and tweeted, “A third rate comedian making an insensitive audience laugh! Then these people justify and question us Northeastern people why we don’t feel like we are part
of mainstream India?” He said the fact that the audience laughed and clapped at this “terrible joke” is more saddening. Assam Police Special Director General L R Bishnoi has also urged the cyber cell of the state police to take cognisance. “HQ Cyber Cell team @assampolice pls look into it! Sheer ignorance on the part of those involved!” Bishnoi tweeted. All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) chief advisor Samujjal Kumar Bhattacharjya also expressed his anguish and tweeted, “We have time & again been treated as objects of ridicule for not looking ‘Indian’ enough. Discrimination based on racial profiling is tormenting.” “NE is not a repository of rich resources or exotic culture alone.@ColorsTV & @TheRaghav_Juyal’s racist slurs are condemned & punishable,” he added. Netizens have condemned the incident and demanded an unconditional apology as well as police action against the show and the host.

Rs 73.68 lakh withdrawn without construction of schools: AMSU Tripura row: Arrested journos are agents of a pol party, alleges state minister
Correspondent
IMPHAL, NOV 16: A student body in Manipur on Tuesday alleged misappropriation of funds in school development works under Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA) in the state. All Manipur Students’ Union (AMSU), one of the major students’ pressure groups of the state, alleged that a total amount of Rs 73.68 lakh sanctioned for construction of buildings of three primary schools under SSA in Thoubal district have been misappropriated. While exposing the
fund embezzlement at a news conference at its head office in Imphal, AMSU general secretary Bikramjit Thongam demanded the government initiate a proper inquiry into the matter so that culprit(s) can be punished as per law. While producing official documents related with the implementation of projects and fund utilization statements, the general secretary alleged that the funds were withdrawn without physical implementation of the projects. He said that the fund embezzlement came to light when members
of the student bodies went to inspect some schools in Thoubal district as a part of its ongoing ‘total education campaign’ recently. Thongam said that the documents available with the student body showed that the funds meant for the construction of three schools under ZEO-III of Thoubal education office under SSA scheme had already been withdrawn by the respective contractors. The funds for the construction of the buildings were sanctioned during 2012-13 and funds for construction of two primary
schools were withdrawn without constructing the new buildings and another one without completion of the building. He said that as per official documents available with the AMSU, the SSA authority sanctioned Rs 32.84 lakh each for the two primary schools - Ingalok Primary School and Malei Tampak Primary School. He revealed that when AMSU members visited the two campuses, the found no construction of buildings though the fund had been fully withdrawn. Another Rs 8 lakh meant for con-
struction of another school - Ingalok Achouba Primary School- had also already withdrawn but the building was found to be incomplete with only the pillars and roofing. The partially constructed building was being used as a cattle-shed. He demanded a proper inquiry into the misappropriation of the funds for school development and befitting actions against those involved in the fund embezzlement. The general secretary further demanded a statement from the pertinent authorities regarding the utilization of the funds.
Assam, M’laya to take steps ‘Credible media has key role in democracy’ to settle border disputes
GUWAHATI, NOV 16 (PTI): Assam and Meghalaya on Tuesday announced that they would take necessary measures to settle interstate border disputes in at least six areas by the end of this year. Addressing a joint press conference here, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and his Meghalaya counterpart Conrad Sangma said border committees set up earlier to hammer out solutions will submit their reports by November 30. The two chief
ministers visited a disputed site at Langpih in Kamrup district earlier in the day. “The committees will present reports before their respective state governments, which will then talk to the stakeholders. After that, a clear picture will emerge and a final statement will be issued,” Sangma said. Sarma further explained that the two states have formed three committees each to settle problems at six out of 12 disputed sites in Kamrup, Kamrup Metropolitan and Hailakandi districts.
GUWAHATI, NOV 16 (PTI): The importance of a credible media to hold those in power accountable to people, and the need for ensuring that causes of the masses are not pushed to the back by the growing influence of advertisers were stressed at the state-level National Press Day function in Assam on Tuesday. The need for soul searching and regulations for the media to maintain its credibility and trust among its readers and viewers was also highlighted at the event organised by the Directorate of Information and Pub-
lic Relations of the state government here. The keynote speaker, Dr. Chandan Kumar Sharma, professor of Sociology at Tezpur University, said trust is the most important tool for the media and society cannot afford for the media to lose its credibility. He said the media’s role as a watchdog is always crucial to keep those in charge, whether they are elected representatives or people with power to impact and influence others, in check and hold them accountable if they fail to discharge their duties. While journalists were
viewed as social workers in the past, technological and economic factors have contributed to a change in this view regarding the profession, he said. Liberalisation of the economy impacted all sectors in our country, including media, and private ownership and cross-ownership of media is leading to coverage of selective news or decreasing space for certain news, Sharma added. Sharma further said though media houses are heavily dependent on advertisements for revenue, it is not something new.
AGARTALA, NOV 16 (AGENCIES): Tripura minister Sushanta Chowdhury on Monday alleged that the two journalists who were arrested recently for their reportage on the anti-Muslim violence in the state had come to the state as agents of a political party, the Hindustan Times reported. Chowdhury made the remarks hours after a court granted them bail. He, however, did not name any particular political party. The journalists, Samriddhi Sakunia and Swarna Jha, have been charged under Indian Penal Code sections 120(B) (punishment for criminal conspiracy), 153(A) (offence of promoting disharmony, enmity or feelings of hatred between different groups on the grounds of religion) and 504 (intentional insult). Chowdhury, the information and cultural affairs minister in the Tripura government, claimed in a press conference that Sakunia and Jha came to Tripura “with an intention to affect communal peace and cause a riot-like situation”. He alleged that they sought to provoke people with fake footage. The minister claimed

After passing out from the Indian Military Academy (IMA) in May 2002, he was commissioned in the 2 Kumaon Regiment of the Indian Army, the release said. “Today, as his name gets inscribed in golden letters with full military honours in the sacred Hut of Remembrance, his martyrdom will continue to inspire future generations of the NDA cadets. The NDA fraternity offers heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family in this hour of grief,” the release said. On Monday, the last rites of the colonel were held with full military and state honours in his hometown Raigarh in Chhattisgarh, while his wife and son were cremated and buried, respectively. The ‘Hut of Remembrance’ at the NDA is a sublime cenotaph that commemorates the sacrifice of ex-NDA officers of the armed forces who lay down their lives in the line of duty.
AIZAWL, NOV 16 (PTI): Mizoram’s COVID-19 tally surged to 1,29,386 as 611 more people tested positive for the infection while one new fatality pushed the death toll to 463, a statement issued by the Information and Public Relations department said on Tuesday. The single-day positivity rate dipped to 11.30 per cent from 15.90 per cent the previous day, as the 611 new cases were detected from 5,411 samples tested, it said. The new cases were reported from 11 districts including Aizawl (310), Lunglei (74), and Serchhip (55). A 78-year-old man in Aizawl district succumbed to the COVID-19 infection, the statement said. The state now has 5,185 active COVID-19 cases, while 1,23,738 people have recovered from the disease, including 849 in the last 24 hours, it said. The COVID-19 recovery rate now is 95.97 per cent and the fatality rate is 0.35 per cent. The northeastern state has so far tested 13.78 lakh samples for COVID-19.
GUWAHATI, NOV 16 (PTI): The Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC), in its bid to check “malpractices detrimental to a civic society”, has issued an order banning therapy or massage of customers by members of opposite sex in the city’s parlours, saloons and spas. The order, undersigned by the GMC commissioner, said that the corporation is guided by the principle of ‘Ease of Doing Business’ and has no objection to entrepreneurs setting up saloons, beauty parlours or spas. It, however, set conditions for granting trade licenses. “There shall not be any exclusive room or chamber within the premises of the parlour/spa/saloon... Therapy or massage cannot be provided by the opposite sex,” the order, dated November 13, said. It also underlined that provision of steam bath may be there in these salons but under no condition, a person of the opposite sex would be allowed to assist in any way. “Main doors should be transparent. There should be qualified therapists in spas
and unisex parlours,” the GMC order stated. The corporation further said that addresses and phone numbers of all the customers must be maintained in these trade establishments. Explaining the reason for issuing this first-of-its-kind order in Guwahati, the GMC said: “Umpteen complaints have been received from citizens alleging several malpractices in certain spas and unisex parlours which have been deemed detrimental to a civic society. “The corporation is bound to respect public morality and the laws which govern a civic society.” Rashmi Baishya, who runs two women’s parlours, has welcomed the notification. “It would be good if the elements running illegal activities, using the guise of this profession, are reined in,” Baidya noted. An entrepreneur, who owns two unisex spas in Sundarpur and Beltola, however, said on the condition of anonymity that the order will “destroy” businesses of many genuine parlours like his.
Sushanta Chowdhury that they did not co-operate with the police in connection with a case lodged against them at the Kakraban police station. The case at Kakraban in Gomati district is one of the two FIRs lodged against Sakunia and Jha, the other being lodged at the Fatikroy police station in Unakoti district. “They told the police that they will take a flight to New Delhi from Agartala,” Chowdhury claimed. “But then they escaped to Nilambazar in Assam without any intimation. If they are journalists, why did they need to escape?” Chowdhury alleged that Sakunia posted fake photos and footage on her Twitter handle showing that a mosque had been burnt in Tripura. He claimed that such posts instigated people to resort to violence
in Maharashtra’s Amravati district. “Whatever happened in Maharashtra…who did this?” Chowdhury said, according to The Indian Express. “A section of journalists, like Samriddhi Sakunia and Swarna Jha, who came to Tripura on behalf of a party, to create communal instigation and malign the state in front of the country.” He also said he has questions about whether they were journalists at all. The minister alleged that Sakunia and Jha were provoking people against the ruling party in Tripura. “They were trying to unite a particular religion,” he claimed. “That’s why the FIR was registered. The police wanted to talk to these people to know where they came from and why, since it is an issue of internal security.”
Tripura violence
Reports of communal violence first emerged from Tripura last month. Activists of the Vishwa Hindu Parishad had allegedly vandalised a mosque and properties of Muslims in North Tripura during a protest against the anti-Hindu violence in Bangladesh earlier in October.

RSS activist’s murder: BJP seeks NIA probe; meets Gov T H I RU VA N A N T H A PURAM, NOV 16 (PTI): A day after a young Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) activist was hacked to death in Palakkad district, the BJP in Kerala on Tuesday met Governor Arif Mohammad Khan here, with a request that the case be handed over to the National Investigation Agency (NIA). The saffron party alleged that the activists of Social Democratic Party of India (SDPI), the political offshoot of Islamist outfit Popular Front of India (PFI), was behind the broad daylight murder and they got the backing of the ruling dispensation. BJP state chief K Surendran met Governor Arif Mohammad Khan at Raj Bhavan here and gave a representation in this regard. Stating that the Governor’s intervention was inevitable to uphold the rule of law in the state and ensure the protection of life and property of the common man, Surendran wanted Khan to ensure a free and fair investigation in the case. “I urge Your Excellency to direct the state government to hand over this case to the National Investigation Agency (NIA),” he said in the representation.
A Sanjith
Twenty seven-year old Sanjith was hacked to death in front of his wife when he was taking her to her place of work in Mambaram in Palakkad on Monday morning, police said. Surendran, in the representation, charged that it was “very evident” from the autopsy report that “specially trained” assailants were behind the “planned murder”. Though the SDPI had targeted the deceased activist since 2020, the state police had “miserably” failed to provide adequate security to him and it was nothing but ‘criminal negligence’, he said. Targeting the ruling CPI(M), Surendan further alleged that it was an open secret that the Marxist party and the Islamic terror outfits were now hand in glove in the state and their common goal was to annihilate nationalist forces in the southern state.
TMC MLA triggers row with remarks against BSF KO L K ATA , N OV 1 6 (PTI): Senior TMC leader and MLA Udayan Guha courted controversy on Tuesday as he accused the BSF of “touching women inappropriately” in border areas under the garb of frisking operations. Guha’s remark drew a sharp reaction from the BJP, which termed it as an “insult to the security forces”. During a discussion in the Assembly on a resolution opposing the Centre’s decision to extend the BSF’s jurisdiction, Guha spoke about the “atrocities let loose by the BSF on people living in the border areas”. “We have seen the kind of atrocities that BSF perpetrates on people. A child who has witnessed his mother being touched inappropriately under the garb of frisking, when she returns from the field, can never be patriotic, no matter how many times you chant ‘Bharat Mata ki Jai’ in front of him. These incidents give birth to anti-social elements,” he said on the floor of the House. BJP MLAs demanded that his remark be expunged, but Speaker Biman Banerjee refused to do so.
Kartarpur Sahib corridor to be reopened from Wednesday
Kartarpur Sahib corridor (File photo)
NEW DELHI, NOV 16 (PTI): The Kartarpur Sahib corridor to the most revered shrines of Sikhs located in Pakistan will be reopened from Wednesday, Union Home Minister Amit Shah announced on Tuesday. The cor ridor links Gurdwara Darbar Sahib in Pakistan, the final resting place of Sikhism founder Guru Nanak Dev, to Dera Baba Nanak shrine in Punjab’s Gurdaspur district. The announcement to restart the pilgrimage that was suspended since March 2020 following the COVID-19 outbreak came three days before the birth anniversary of Guru Nanak Dev on Friday. Shah said the decision reflects the Modi government’s immense reverence for Guru Nanak Dev and the Sikh community.
“In a major decision, that will benefit large numbers of Sikh pilgrims, PM @Narendramodi govt has decided to reopen the Kartarpur Sahib Corridor from tomorrow, Nov 17. “This decision reflects the immense reverence of Modi govt towards Shri Guru Nanak Dev Ji and our Sikh community,” Shah tweeted. The home minister said the nation is all set to celebrate the Prakash Utsav of Shri Guru Nanak Dev ji on November 19 and he was confident that this move will further “boost the joy and happiness across the country”. Punjab Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi welcomed the Centre’s decision and said the state cabinet will be part of the “Jatha” that will visit the shrine in Pakistan on November 18.
Besides Channi, Punjab Congress chief Navjot Singh Sidhu, former CM Amarinder Singh, BJP national general secretary Tarun Chugh and Shiromani Akali Dal chief Sukhbir Singh Badal also hailed the Centre’s move. India signed the Kartarpur corridor agreement with Pakistan on October 24, 2019. Under the pact, Indian pilgrims of all faiths are allowed to undertake round the year visa-free travel through the 4.5-kmlong passage. In November 2019, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had inaugurated the dedicated corridor. Former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, his wife Gursharan Kaur, the then Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh and Union minister Hardeep Puri were part of the first group that visited the gurudwara in Pakistan in November 2019 through the corridor. Former Punjab chief minister Parkash Singh Badal, his son and SAD chief Sukhbir Singh Badal and the then Union minister Harsimrat Kaur Badal were also part of the delegation led by Akal Takht Jathedar Harpreet Singh.
patriotic if he witnesses his mother being inappropriately touched under the garb of body search by the BSF,” Guha said. BJP MLAs opposed the remark and demanded that it be expunged. Speaker Biman Banerjee, however, refrained from expunging Guha’s comment. Leader of the Opposition Suvendu Adhikari said the kind of language used against a force like the BSF is completely unacceptable. “When the Union government tries to withdraw central forces from Junglemahal, it is the state government that opposes the move. And now, the same government is opposing BSF activities. Under this new rule (jurisdiction extension), there is no question of conflict between the state police and the BSF,” Adhikari stated. The resolution was passed with 112 voting in favour of it and 63 opposing it.

Located 50 km from Hyderabad, Pochampally in Yadadri Bhuvanagiri district is often referred to as the Silk City of India for the exquisite sarees that are
woven through a unique style called Ikat. This style, Pochampally Ikat, received a Geographical Indicator (GI Status) in 2004. Ikat is a MalaysianIndonesian word which means ‘tie and dye’. It involves the process of wrapping (or tying) and dyeing sections of bundled yarn to a predetermined colour pattern before they are woven. The dye penetrates into exposed sections while
the wrapped section remains undyed. This pattern formed by the yarn in this process is woven into fabric. Union Minister of Culture and Tourism, G. Kishan Reddy, congratulated the people of the village for the prestigious recognition, which will be presented on the occasion of the 24th session of the UNWTO General Assembly on December 2 in Madrid, Spain.
MP: Hindu Mahasabha to make Godse’s statue with Ambala jail soil
G WA L I O R , N OV 1 6 (PTI): The Hindu Mahasabha has said it will make a statue of Nathuram Godse with soil brought from Haryana’s Ambala Central Jail, where the assassin of Mahatma Gandhi was hanged to death in 1949. The right-wing organisation’s comments came on
Monday when it observed Godse’s death anniversary. “The Mahasabha activists last week brought the soil from the Ambala jail, where Godse and Narayan Apte were executed. This soil will be used to make the statues of Godse and Apte and they will be installed at the Mahasabha’s office
in Gwalior,” the outfit’s national vice president Dr Jaiveer Bharadwaj told reporters. The Mahasabha activists installed the statues of Godse and Apte at ‘Balidhan Dham’ in Meerut (Uttar Pradesh) on Monday, he said. “We will construct such Balidan Dham in every state,” he added.
He further said the Gwalior district administration had seized Godse’s bust (installed at the Mahasabha’s office here) in 2017, but it was not returned so far. Bharadwaj also alleged that the Congress was responsible for the country’s partition (in 1947) which resulted in killings of people
Govt extends ban on Zakir Naik’s Islamic Research Foundation for 5 yrs
NEW DELHI, NOV 16 (PTI): The Centre on Monday extended for five years the ban imposed on the Islamic Research Foundation (IRF), headed by India-born preacher Zakir Naik, currently based in Malaysia. The IRF was first declared an unlawful organisation under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, 1967 (37 of 1967) by the central government on November 17, 2016. In a notification, the Union Home Ministry said that the IRF has been indulging in activities which are prejudicial to the security of the country and have the potential of disturbing peace and communal harmony and disrupting the secular fabric of the country. GadgetFreeHour campaign on Nov 20 NEW DELHI, NOV 16 (PTI): An hour-long campaign to motivate people to disconnect from their electronic gadgets and connect with children around them amid the COVID-19 pandemic is slated to take place on November 20, organisers said on Tuesday. From the beginning of the pandemic, people of all ages have spent significantly more time using mobile phones and other gadgets. More screen time is not a choice anymore, but a necessity for families, they said. As part of the GadgetFreeHour Campaign for Change in 2020, a huge number of participants are “expected to disconnect from their electronic gadgets for one-hour on November 20 - World’s Children Day - to spend the time exclusively with their children,” according to a statement issued by Parent Circle, a parenting magazine. The family-connect initiative was a huge success last year, with “more than a million parents and over 41,635 schools participating in the event. ParentCirclehas invites everyone to celebrate the priceless parent-child bond by participating in the #GadgetFreeHour drive on November 20, between 7.30 pm and 8.30 pm, the statement said.

ment is of the opinion that the IRF and its members, particularly, the founder and president, Zakir Abdul Karim Naik alias Zakir Naik, has been encouraging and aiding its followers to promote or attempt to promote, on grounds of religion, disharmony or feelings of enmity, hatred or ill-will between different religious communities and groups which are prejudicial to the
integrity and security of the country, it said. The Home Ministry said the statements and speeches made by Naik are objectionable and subversive and through them he has been promoting enmity and hatred among religious groups and inspiring youths of a particular religion in India and abroad to commit terrorist acts. Naik also makes radical statements and speeches to millions of people worldwide through international satellite TV network, Internet, print and social media, it said. The central government is further of the opinion that if the unlawful activities of the IRF are not curbed and controlled immediately, it will take the opportunity to continue its subversive activities.
India set to seal USD 3 billion Predator drone deal with US
NEW DELHI, NOV 16 (PTI): India is set to finalise a long-conceived proposal to procure 30 multi-mission armed Predator drones from the US for the three services at an estimated cost of over USD 3 billion (around Rs 22,000 crore), official sources said on Tuesday. The proposal to acquire the MQ-9B long-endurance drones, armed with air-toground missiles, is likely to be cleared by the Defence Acquisition Council (DAC) in the next few weeks following which it will be placed before the PM-led Cabinet Committee on Security, they said. The sources said various key aspects of the procurement including the cost component and weapons package have already been finalised and the mega-deal is set to be sealed with the US by the current fiscal. Vice Chief of India Navy Vice Admiral said the proposal will be placed before the DAC in a “short while”. “The whole effort of the procurement process is that we take a very balanced decision and therefore inputs of all stakeholders are taken. The process is on and we have progressed quite a bit on this process. This
will move to DAC in a short while,” he told reporters at an event. The procurement proposal has been moved by the Indian Navy and all three services are likely to get 10 drones each. The remotely piloted drones, manufactured by US defence major General Atomics, are capable of remaining airborne for around 35 hours and can be deployed on a range of missions including surveillance, reconnaissance, intelligence gathering and destroying enemy targets. The medium-altitude long-endurance (MALE) Predator-B drone is the first hunter-killer UAV designed for long-endurance and high-altitude surveillance. Indian armed forces have been focusing on procuring unmanned platforms including armed drones following the eastern Ladakh standoff with China and a drone strike on the Jammu airbase. Explosives-laden drones were used to carry out the attack on the Jammu Air Force station in June in the first such instance of suspected Pakistan-based terrorists deploying unmanned aerial vehicles to strike at vital military installations in India.
on a large scale. Meanwhile, Gwalior’s Additional Superintendent of Police Satyendra Singh Tomar said there was no public programme of the Hindu Mahasabha here on Monday. No statue has been installed so far and the police are keeping an eye on the outfit’s activities, he said.

Bengal became the second state after Punjab where such a resolution has been tabled and passed. The resolution was moved by state parliamentary affairs minister Partha Chatterjee under Rule 169 of the Procedures of Conduct of Business of the House. “We demand that this decision be withdrawn immediately as enhancing the area of jurisdiction of the BSF is a direct attack on the country’s federal structure,” he said. The police allowed grocery shops to remain open between 2 pm and 4 pm but for five days now, residents are unable to buy vegetables. Suresh Jain, president of Mahanagar Chamber, an umbrella organisation of local commercial associations said, “Grocery shops and medicines were available for two hours but vegetables are still not available as the twohour window in the curfew is not good enough for retailers (vegetable vendors) to travel to buy vegetables from wholesalers and then return to local markets and sell them. Merit irrelevant
othing more can be said about the state government’s strange concept of development than the fact that it continues to ignore the merits of setting up projects in Dimapur. This is a total contra-vention of the principles of taking into account availability of various aspects. Projects are essentially meant to be self-sustaining after a limited period. Projects are established in certain areas which offer distinct advantages over others. The decision is made after due diligence by various experts in the field so that the project satisfies basic requirement such as location advantage, local market etc. Once set up, the projects are also expected to promote economic activity or provide sustaina-ble employment etc. In short, projects are not meant to be perpetually welfare-oriented even if they provide employment. There is absolutely no debate that Dimapur has huge advantage over other towns in Nagaland. By dint of advantages, most projects in the past were set up in Dimapur mainly due to convenience of location, availability of skilled and semi-skilled workers, connectivity by road, rail and air. Though other local or craft training institutes may be set up in other places hav-ing particular skill available locally; vital projects such as medium industry, food processing and agroindustries can only be viable in Dimapur. Over and above these advantages, Dimapur also merits the establishment of a good medical college. It is a shame that the regional party govern-ment in Nagaland has been overlooking Dimapur for whatever reasons with respect of establishing a medical college; facilitating the development of Dimapur airport and ensuring that train passen-gers of Dimapur are facilitated with adequate reservations by placing at least ten out of the 42 long distance trains from Tinsukia or Dibrugarh. On the issue of medical college, the state government has already gone ahead with setting up two medical colleges (after the amendment in 2014) where a hospital with 200-bed may be turned into a medical college to provide studies for 100 students. The first medical college was inaugurated at Naga Hospital Authority Kohima(NHAK) having 200-bedded capacity. The administrative, academic, hostel complex for students and residential com-plex for faculty and staff at Phriebagei while the teaching and hospital campus will be at some dis-tance at Naga Hospital Authority, Kohima (NHAK).The medical college at Kohima will have two campuses-the administrative, academic, hostel complex for students and residential complex of faculty and staff for the medical college will be at Phriebagie, while the teaching hospital campus at the Naga Hospital Authority Kohima (NKAH). The second medical college will come up in Mon where the district hospital will have the immense task of increasing its beds by 150 to attain the requirement. Dimapur has around a total of over 300 beds(with addition of 200 ACBH) at the CIHSR and 100 at District Hospital. The other beds are from 51 at Faith Hospital and Institute of Medical Sciences, 10 at Nikos Hospital, 25 at Eden Medical Centre, six at Zion Hospital. The huge advantage of having a medical college in Dimapur is well known. The proposed 500-bedded referral hospital was constructed in the late 80s with the goal of becoming a medical college. Today the CIHSR runs the hospital in the 100-plus acre plot under a tripartite agreement with the state, CMC Vellore and EHA. It is hoped the long cherished dreams of the state in having a truly viable medical college will be realised at Dimapur.

‘SARFAESI Act, 2002 would affect our land and essence of Art 371A’
I
n brief the Securitisation and Reconstruction of Financial Assets and Enforcement of Security Interest Act, 2002(SARFAESI) is an Indian law and it allows banks and other financial institution to auction residential or commercial properties of defaulters to recover loans. The Security Interest Enforcement Rules 2002 deals with the sale of both movable and immovable secured assets by way of holding public auction, etc. In exercise of the powers conferred by SARFAESI Act the Central Government hereby makes the following rules whereby the relevant portion is Rule 6 of the Security Interest Enforcement Rules, 2002 provides Sale of movable secured assets. Rule 6(1) The authorized officer may sell the movable secured assets taken possession under sub-rule (1) of rule 4 in one or more lots by adopting any of the following methods to secure maximum sale price

for the assets, to be sold – (a) obtaining quotations from parties dealing in the secured assets or otherwise interested in buying such assets; or (b) inviting tenders from the public; or (c) holding public auction; or (d) by private treaty. Rule 8 deals with sale of immovable secured assets and Rule 8(5) Before affecting sale of immovable property referred to in subrule(1) of rule 9, the authorized officer shall obtain valuation of the property from an approved valuer and in consultation with the secured creditor, fix the reserve price of the property and may sell the whole or any part of such immovable secured asset by any of the following methods – (a)obtaining quotations from the persons or otherwise interested in buying such assets; or (b) inviting tenders from the public; or (c) holding public auc-
tion; or (d) by private treaty. As per SARFAESI Act and the Security Interest Enforcement Rule there is no provision where property both movable or immovable to be sold out to the indigenous people only. The Nagaland Legislative Assembly’s(NLA) Select Committee on SARFAESI Act, 2002 was of the opinion that when the banks confiscate the land of any individual unable to repay the loan, it should be sold out to indigenous people and not to ‘outsiders’, but in contrary to that the minister for planning & co-ordination, land revenue and parliamentary affairs Neiba Kronu had admitted that the SARFAESI Act being a central Act it cannot be amended by the State asked if the government would amend or add a clause on safeguarding the land and property. As per the Act there is no guarantee that the residential or commercial
properties can be sold to indigenous people only as the Rule provides that the sale would be by way of holding public auction, etc. Subsequently if property especially immovable was sold to non-indigenous or outsider by way of holding public auction, etc., then the essence of Article 371A would be badly affected. Article 371A of Indian Constitution is a special provision with respect to the State of Nagaland which was inserted in Part XXI of the Constitution of India and it is an outcome of an agreement between the Government of India and the Leaders of the Naga People’s Convention. In dealing with Article 371A (iv) ownership and transfer of land and its resources, the Nagaland Land and Revenue Regulation(Amendment Act) 1978 section 2 (2) provides Notwithstanding anything to the contrary in any law, usage, contract or agreement no person other
than the indigenous inhabitants of Nagaland shall acquire or possess by transfer , exchange, lease agreement or settlement of any land in any area or areas constituted into belts or block in contravention of the provisions of sub-section(1). The 16 Point Agreement was unanimously adopted by the representatives of 16(Sixteen) Naga tribes in the 3rd Naga Peoples’ Convention (NPC) held in Mokokchung town from 22nd to 26th October 1959, which was placed before the prime Minister of India is a matter of Naga historical and political record. It is observed that the bilateral 16 Point Agreement of 1960 and Article 371A is slowly fading and practically eroding by arbitrary dictates of the Government of India. It is very unfortunate that the reality is that the Government of India is overriding and destroying the so-called special provision ‘Article 371A’ at every turn on its own motion unilaterally.
Hence, earlier the Nagaland Voluntary Consumers’ Organisation (NVCO) submits a representation dated 4th Nov 2019 to the Hon’ble Government of India’s Interlocutor & Governor of Nagaland Shri. R.N. Ravi to strengthen the Article 371A of Indian Constitution and even restore the Resolution of the Nagaland State Legislative Assembly on 26th July, 2010 in respect of “ownership and transfer of land and its resources” including mineral oil. In a representation the NVCO asked the Interlocutor and also Governor of Nagaland Shri. R.N. Ravi to take this eroding of Article 371A and its related matters with the Government of India on a war footing to the extent that no Act of Parliament shall apply the State of Nagaland and the term “land and its resources” in Article 371A would include mineral oil and their resources. Thin line between depression and feeling depressed
T
hese days everywhere you look, you spot people talking about things not going right or how they feel stressed and “depressed”. Depression has hit society in the worst way ever - right from adults to kids being impacted by it at different intensities. Research shows that 1 in every 5 people goes through depression or mental health issues in any given year. Before we understand what depression is, let’s clarify at the outset what it isn’t. Depression is not feeling sad or feeling depressed momentarily. Unknowingly, we stereotypically portray depression as sadness with the extensive usage of the word. Dr. Chandni Tugnait, a psychotherapist, life and business coach, and founder-director of Gateway of Healing says, depression is not being unhappy; it is not anger, fear or loneliness - it is none of these individually and yet it is all of these and much more. Depression is being numb. It is nothingness. It is exhausting. It takes away all motivation and leaves a feeling of hopelessness. There is a lack of energy - it’s more like a void where nothing grows or changes, where time
Still Human!
…whatever you do, do all to the glory of God. —1 Corinthi-ans 10:31 In the Scriptures, the great miracle of the incarnation slips into the or-dinary life of a child; the great miracle of the transfiguration fades into the demonpossessed valley below; the glory of the resurrection de-scends into a breakfast on the seashore. This is not an anticlimax, but a great revelation of God. We have a tendency to look for wonder in our experience, and we mis-take heroic actions for real heroes. It’s one thing to go through a crisis grandly, yet quite another to go through every day glorifying God when there is no witness, no limelight, and no one paying even the remotest attention to us. If we are not looking for halos, we at least want something that will make people say, “What a wonderful man of prayer he is!” or, “What a great woman of devotion she is!” If you are properly devoted to the Lord Jesus, you have reached the lofty height where no one would ever notice you personally. All that is noticed is the power of God coming through you all the time. We want to be able to say, “Oh, I have had a wonderful call from God!” But to do even the most humbling tasks to the glory of God takes the Almighty God Incarnate working in us. To be utterly unnoticeable re-quires God’s Spirit in us making us absolutely humanly His. The true test of a saint’s life is not successfulness but faithfulness on the human level of life. We tend to set up success in Christian work as our pur-pose, but our purpose should be to display the glory of God in human life, to live a life “hidden with Christ in God” in our everyday human conditions (Colossians 3:3). Our human relationships are the very con-ditions in which the ideal life of God should be exhibited.
NAGALAND POST, DIMAPUR WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 17, 2021
W
does not exist, where there is nothing and no one. Of course, it is difficult for the person trying to cope with it as well as for the people around them. Sometimes depression is chronic and evident but a lot of times one isn’t aware of it and sometimes one is even able to camouflage it in the garb of routine & forced positivity - this last type, by the way, is the worst as sometimes we lose them to suicide - just like that - no warning, no sign, as per Dr. Tugnait. The line between clinical depression and feeling depressed is quite fragile and often we find inappropriate self-diagnosis in this regard. Clinical depression is accompanied by a feeling of impending doom without any reason, every day, for over two weeks continuously along with fatigue, loss of interest, insomnia, etc. However, one may feel depressed for a while due to a difficult event like losing a job/ loved one, etc. and may confuse it for depression and begin to pop pills. It’s important to be aware of the difference - the ability to get up and fight back against these feelings, instead of accepting them or thinking that they will simply go away
on their own or never go away. The deeper the roots of depression, the more time it takes for a person to heal. It keeps a person in the loop of being low’ and makes them self-damaging. The symptoms could range from crying all day to being unable to get up from the bed to work, bathe, or even eat. Then there are the happy and high functioning depressed people who have smiling depression. A high functioning depressed person appears energetic, carefree and cheery on the outside, most of the time and people close to them never get to know that on the inside they are being sucked into a black hole. Strangely, they would go out of their way to keep others happy, masking their own sadness. When alone, they cry, contemplate suicide and feel exhausted from all the pretending. Why do they pretend? Well, it’s funny that each time we ask someone, “How are you?”, we are looking at “I am fine, thank you” as the response because if someone starts sharing how they really are, we are quick to tell them not to sulk or look at the bright side. Sharing and sulking
are two different things. The fear of being judged is deeply ingrained in our beings and hence it seems like a better proposition to endure the depression in silence than to voice it out. Contrary to what most people feel, you can’t lose depression simply by ‘looking at the bright side’. You may be able to camouflage your feelings to save others from getting bothered (or to save yourself from the guilt of it all) but this is plain masking and not copying or healing. People suffering from depression can’t “cheer up” and that adds to more frustration. With every depressed person (and even those suffering from anxiety or other mental health issues) there is a constant ‘need’ to be themselves or be how they were earlier or be how their friends and family would like them to be. This chase to “be that person” is precisely why most people, despite all the efforts and therapy, are unable to snap out of it. Dr. Tugnait lists some ways to deal with depression ACCEPTANCE - Accept self and others (with or without depression) without asking for a change. This is the first step in healing. You can’t change
something if you resist it as the resistance keeps the energy flowing in that same direction that you wish to alter. Haven’t you fought enough already? Let’s change the dynamics and accept it, to release it. COMPASSION - Choose compassion. Choose the wholeness of being instead of viewing yourself as someone who needs ‘fixing’. ROUTINE - Fix a morning routine to take time to feel gratitude, meditate, read a few pages of a book while sipping tea, exercise, write a journal, sleep for 7-8 hours daily and take a cold shower. SEEK SUPPORT - Ask for help and seek professional support from a therapist in case the situation is extreme despite the self-help, positive lifestyles changes and support from family and friends. There’s no shame in seeking help to be healthy! Everyone should be more accepting of mental health issues without any judgments. Take the leap of faith when you feel ready. Until then, just breathe! You are doing fine. Depression is real but so is hope and recovery. (IANS Life)
The ‘Good’, the ‘Bad’ and the ‘Deobandi’ Taliban
hile an effort to classify the Taliban into good and bad is rather easy, the underlying reasons to classify them as Deobandi becomes a little tough and illogical. The seizure of Afghan capital, Kabul by the Taliban and their declaration to declare Afghanistan an Islamic Emirate has again raised the spectre of The Good, The Bad and The Deobandi Taliban. The Good and Bad Taliban I believe the distinction between the good and the bad Taliban, was first made by Shah Mahmood Qureshi during his first tenure as the Pakistani Foreign Minister from 2008-2011. Interpreting his statement led to the fact that Pakistan believed that the Taliban aligned to Pakistan were the good Taliban and those opposed to its policies and intervention in Afghanistan are bad Taliban. The western media took the categorisation a step forward and even American politicians like Condoleezza Rice and Hillary Clinton used the phrase to divide the Taliban into two different categories. While delving into the psyche of the ‘good’ and the ‘bad’ Taliban let’s be clear that the Taliban is not
a monolithic organisation, it has various factions and tribal and clannish rivalries. In the background of the traditional Afghan society we have to understand that the smallest functioning unit is the village and the local village headman or the local Imam holds sway over the vast multitude of uneducated Afghans, thus the message which they get from the local leader is the final order for them, added to their loyalty to the local militia or the Taliban unit. In addition, the local commanders wield a lot of clout and power. Moreover, when the uneducated rural folks are handed the latest automatic weapons, they become another power unit of their own, with no link to the tag with which they were attached. More recently, before the American withdrawal from Afghanistan, the chief of the US Central Command General Kenneth F. McKenzie called the Taliban “very pragmatic and very business like”. This sounded more like ‘good’ Taliban, as they were eager to gain legitimacy before the US withdrawal and were putting out their best behaviour. This shift is happening in the Taliban ranks too, and as per the rules set by the west and Pakistan, the fac-
tions who align with them will be the ‘good’ Taliban. And those who are still committed to the old or stubborn Taliban are termed as ‘bad’ Taliban. The Deobandi Taliban But perhaps the most damaging sobriquet attached to Taliban is describing them as Deobandi. It shows that the people who describe them so have no clue about the great Indian seminary of Darul Uloom, Deoband and the role, which it played in tempering the Muslims sentiments on secular lines in addition to its immense contributions to the freedom struggle of India. Barbara Daly Metcalf, an expert on the history of South Asia, especially the colonial period and the history of the Muslim population of India and Pakistan, in her book “Islamic Revival in British India, Deoband 1860-1900” (February 2002) describes Deoband at the turn of the millennium emerging into public consciousness because of the association of the leadership of the Afghan Taliban regime with the Deobandi Ulema of Pakistan. She is of the view that many of the Taliban, whose very name described them as madrasa ‘students’, had studied in Deobandi seminaries in the Pakistan
frontier provinces when, from the 1980s on, millions of Afghans had settled as refugees in that area. And based on this fact collectively calling all Taliban as Deobandi Taliban and casting aspersions on the Indian Deoband seminary is complete ignorance of Islam in the sub-continent. The surge in the number of madrasas coincided with the influx of some three million Afghan refugees, for whose boys these madrasas provided the only available education. One school in particular, the Madrasa Haqqaniya, in Akora Khatak near Peshawar, trained many of the top Taliban leaders. These sometime students were shaped by many of the amended Deobandi reformist causes, all of which were further encouraged with Wahabi interpretation by Arab volunteers in Afghanistan. These causes included rigorous concern with fulfilling rituals related to daily prayers and reciting the Holy Quran; opposition to custom laden ceremonies such as weddings and pilgrimage to shrines, along with practices associated with the Barelvi and Shi’a minority; and a focus on seclusion of women as a central symbol of a morally ordered society.
Theirs was, according to political analyst Ahmed Rashid, ‘an extreme form of Deobandism’, which was being preached by Pakistani Islamic parties in Afghan refugee camps in Pakistan. None of the Deobandi movements has a theoretical stance in relation to political life. They either expediently embrace the political culture of their time and place, or withdraw from politics completely. As happened in India after independence in 1947, when the leaders of Darul Uloom withdrew from the political scene completely and confined them to Deoband. Barbara further asserts that the Deobandi madrasas on the Pakistani frontier closed periodically to allow their students to support Taliban efforts. But the historical pattern launched by the Deobandi Ulema, had treated political life on a primarily secular basis, typically, de facto if not de jure, identifying religion with the private sphere, and in that sphere fostering Islamic teachings and interpretations that have proven widely influential. British historian and academic specialising on the history of South Asia and Islam, Francis Robinson, in an essay on the first edition of Barbara’s book, described the Deobandi
movement as “the most constructive and most important Islamic movement of the (19th) century”. He further says that aside from Deoband’s enduring influence, it exemplifies a patter-represented in general terms in a range of Islamic movements outside South Asia as well-of cultural renewal on the one hand and political adaptability on the other. We also need to be aware of the fact that the Pakistani madrassas, which were described as Deobandi, essentially followed the curriculum prescribed by the Indian Darul Uloom. Further some of the founders of these madrassas might have studied at the Darul Uloom, but they had no umbilical link with their alma mater, and just based on the fact that they followed a particular syllabus they were described as Deobandi, though in fact the psyche and practice of their leaders were completely different from the teachings of the Deobandi. Thus, it would be a misnomer to call the Taliban as ‘Deobandi’ Taliban. Asad Mirza (The writer is a political commentator based in New Delhi. Inaugurates Purvanchal Expressway; IAF displays capabilities for emergency operations SULTANPUR (UP), NOV 16 (PTI): Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday accused the previous Uttar Pradesh governments of letting poverty and the mafia take over the state’s eastern part, saying the BJP government is now writing a new chapter of development there. Modi was addressing a rally here after the launch of the 341-km Purvanchal Expressway, where he himself landed in a military transport aircraft on a 3.2km stretch developed as an emergency air strip for the Indian Air Force. Development was limited to places where the previous chief ministers had their homes or families, Modi said while not naming the Samajwadi Party, the Bahujan Party or the Congress which the ruling BJP faces in the as-
sembly polls just months away. The event ended with an air show performed by Mirage, Jaguar, Sukhoi and An-32 aircraft, before the prime minister headed back to Delhi on the C-130 Hercules which had brought him here. The inauguration of the Rs 22,500-crore sixlane road between Lucknow and Ghazipur followed a slugfest between the Bharatiya Janata Party and Akhilesh Yadav’s SP, which maintained that it was his state government that had begun the project. Hitting out at the rivals, Modi said development under the previous CMs was limited to their native places, but the government now is ensuring that it reaches the eastern as well as the western parts of the state.
Narendra Modi “The previous governments reduced the vital eastern part of the state to ‘mafiawaad’ and poverty, but the BJP government is now writing a new chapter of development,” he said. He said the expressway will serve as the lifeline of eastern UP and give a big push to the economic development of the region and the state. Omar Abdullah and Mehbooba Mufti SRINAGAR, NOV 16 (IANS): Former Chief Ministers, Omar Abdullah and Mehbooba Mufti, have demanded an impartial probe in the encounter at a house in Srinagars Hyderpora area. The gunfight took place on Monday in which four persons, including a foreign terrorist, a local militant and two persons were killed. The police said two of the four were overground workers of terrorist groups. “Using innocent ci-
vilians as human shields, getting them killed in cross firing and then conveniently labelling them as OGWs is a part of GOIs rulebook now. Imperative that a credible judicial enquiry is done to bring out the truth and put an end to this rampant culture of impunity,” Mufti tweeted. “An impartial and credible inquiry in to the recent encounter in Hyderpora is an absolute necessity. There are far too many questions being raised about the encounter and about
the people killed.” Omar tweeted. “There have been numerous instances of fake encounters in the past and the questions raised about this #hyderporaencounter need to be answered swiftly and in a credible manner.” Omar tweeted. Police said four persons were killed in an encounter at Hyderpora in Srinagar on Monday, including the foreign militant identified as Haider and his accomplice. Inspector General Police Vijay Kumar said in a press conference that an overground worker of the militants and the house owner were also killed during the encounter. He said that the house owner was killed in a crossfire while Gul, living on rent in the building, had provided shelter to Haider and his associate.
to the polls early next year. The PM recalled the development projects carried out under the “doubleengine” government – the BJP is in power both in Lucknow and at the Centre – while trashing the past governments. In Uttar Pradesh, they only showed dreams industrialisation without bothering about connectivity, Modi claimed. He said factories were thus forced to close down. “And, in these circumstances, it was unfortunate that both in Delhi and in Lucknow, there was a dominance of the dynasts. For years, this partnership of the dynasts continued to crush the aspirations of UP,” he said in a possible reference to the Congress and the SP. In an apparent reference to the Congress, he alluded to the removal of a Sultanpur-born leader from the chief minister’s post in the 1980’s. “The courtiers of a family had insulted Shripati Mishra, which people of
UP have not forgotten,” he said. In another attempt at connecting with his audience at the public meeting, Modi began his address in the local Awadhi dialect. The expressway begins from Chandsarai village on the outskirts of Lucknow and ends at Hadairia village on NH-31 in Ghazipur district. After the address, the prime minister, Uttar Pradesh Governor Anandiben Patel and Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath were among those who watched the air show put up around the emergency air strip. A Mirage-2000 was the first to land. Commandos emerged later from the belly of an An-32 plane. Another Mirage, two Jaguars and an Su-30MKI performed touch-and-go manoeuvres on the air strip. The aircraft also flew in formation and ended the show with a flypast. An announcer identified one of the Sukhoi pilots as a local, Sultanpur man.
Sheena Bora murder case: HC refuses bail to Indrani Mukerjea MUMBAI, NOV 16 (PTI): The Bombay High Court on Tuesday rejected the bail plea of Indrani Mukerjea, who is the prime accused in the Sheena Bora murder case. Muker jea’s lawyer Sana Khan said they will now move the Supreme Court for bail. Mukerjea is currently lodged at the Byculla women’s prison in Mumbai following her arrest in August 2015. This was her first attempt to seek bail from the high court on merits of the case. She had been denied bail on multiple occasions by a special CBI court, which is conducting the trial in the murder case. Mukerjea is facing trial for allegedly killing her daughter Sheena Bora. Bora (24) was allegedly strangled to death in a car by Mukerjea, her then driver
File photo of Indrani Mukerjea Shyamvar Rai and former husband Sanjeev Khanna in April 2012. The body was burnt in a forest in neighbouring Raigad district. Bora was born out of Mukerjea’s previous relationship. Former media baron Peter Mukerjea was also arrested for allegedly being part of the conspiracy. He was granted bail by the high court in February 2020. His marriage to Indrani Mukerjea ended during the period of incarceration.

Zakia Jafri ing the riots. The S-6 coach of Sabarmati Express was burnt at Godhra killing 59 people and triggering riots in Gujarat in 2002. Sibal told the bench that there are “glaring instances of collaboration” which are borne out from records but the SIT did not investigate on the alleged larger conspiracy in the riots. “So far as your grievance about collaboration of local police at the ground level, we can understand that and we will look into it. How can you say that about the SIT which was appointed by the court,” the bench, also comprising Justices Dinesh Maheshwari and C T Ravikumar, asked Sibal. The bench asked Sibal
whether the petitioner is “attacking” the manner of investigation done by the SIT. The senior advocate said, “Yes. That is something which troubles me.” The bench then observed, “How can you attribute motives to the SIT? It is the same SIT which filed charge sheets and people were convicted. No such grievance was made in such cases and you appreciated the work done by the SIT in those cases. “The expression ‘collaboration’ is a very strong term for an SIT constituted by this court.” Sibal said grievances were raised also in the cases where charge sheets were filed and the records show collaboration of the state machinery. “I will demonstrate that after that national tragedy on Sabarmati Express, what happened was that instead of investigating the perpetrators of the crime, the investigators actually became collaborators to the crime. It is not that the entire police machinery was collaborating,” Sibal said.
HM behind fall of Cong govt in MP, tried to do it in Rajasthan: Gehlot JAIPUR, NOV 16 (PTI): Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot on Tuesday accused Union Home Minister Amit Shah of being involved in the fall of Congress government in Madhya Pradesh and trying to do it in Rajasthan too last year. Gehlot made the allegation while referring to the crisis over the stability of his government in 2020 and said the Congress MLAs stayed in hotels for a long time but “the present government is in place only with the blessings of the people”. “The Home Minister could not do anything,” said Gehlot, without naming Shah. “He had a lot of arrogance over Madhya Pradesh
Ashok Gehlot but the people of Rajasthan shattered his arrogance,” asserted Gehlot. “Is it a way to act in a democracy -- bringing down governments?’ he asked. “In which direction the country is going? Nobody knows. Today the Constitution and democracy are in danger. The situation is very serious. Every person
will have to think,” the chief minister added. Gehlot made the remarks while addressing a state-level teacher award ceremony at Birla Auditorium here. The chief minister also targeted the Centre over the rising prices of petrol and diesel. He said when the Manmohan Singh-led UPA government was at the Centre, it did not allow the fuel prices to rise and kept its prices under check despite high crude oil prices in the international market. But under the current NDA government, the prices of oil and diesel have increased rapidly despite crude oil prices falling heavily in the international market.

NEW DELHI, NOV 16 (PTI): On National Press Day, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi attacked the government Tuesday, saying when there is punishment for speaking the truth, it is clear that “falsehood is in power”. National Press Day is observed annually on November 16 to honour the establishment of the Press Council of India (PCI). “When there’s punishment for speaking the truth, it’s clear that falsehood is in power,” Gandhi tweeted, using the hashtag ‘National Press Day’. The former Congress chief had lashed out at the BJP on Sunday, alleg-
NEW DELHI, NOV 16 (PTI): There was a “stark collaboration” between the political class, bureaucracy, investigators and others during the 2002 Gujarat riots after the “national tragedy” of Sabarmati Express incident at Godhra and the SIT did not investigate these aspects, Zakia Jafri told the Supreme Court on Tuesday. The apex court asked Zakia Jafri’s counsel Kapil Sibal as to whether he was attributing motives to the SIT and said the term “collaboration” is a very strong term for a Special Investigation Team (SIT) constituted by the top court. A bench headed by Justice A M Khanwilkar said the same SIT had filed charge sheets in the riots cases in which accused were convicted. Zakia Jafri, the wife of slain Congress leader Ehsan Jafri who was killed at Gulberg society in Ahmedabad on February 28, 2002 during the violence, has challenged the SIT’s clean chit to 64 people including Narendra Modi, the then Gujarat chief minister dur-
NEW DELHI, NOV 16 (PTI): The Press Council of India (PCI) on Tuesday celebrated the National Press Day, with eminent personalities recalling the media’s contribution and evolution in the country. The PCI organised a seminar on the topic, ‘Who is not afraid of media?’, to mark the occasion. Addressing the seminar, Swaminathan Gurumurthy, editor of Tamil language Thuglak magazine, traced the changes media has undergone from the pre-Independence era to the present day. Talking about social media, he dubbed it as “anarchic” and suggested that a complete ban should be imposed on it as it poses a risk to “everybody’s image, national security and national interest”. Some of the participants in the seminar, however, differed from Gurumurthy’s suggestion, saying while measures need to be taken to check the circulation of unverified information, a complete ban on social media would not be an appropriate step to check the spread of misinformation. Underlining the positive aspects of social media, one of the participants said it has offered individuals a platform to freely express their views on any topic. Gurumurty was invited as a guest of honour at the event hosted by the media watchdog which is headed by Justice (retd) Chandramauli Kumar Prasad.

should also factor in the available liquidity and also the kind of interest rate structures they are providing. These decisions should be taken based on prudent principles, he said. The gover nor said irrespective of the fact that liquidity is in surplus, the risk pricing of various loans being extended by banks has to be done diligently by banks themselves. “The mere fact that there is excess liquidity should not lead to any mispricing of loans because this excessive liquidity is not going to be a permanent feature,” Das said. At a particular time last year, the economy needed liquidity because the financial markets were
freezing up and there were episodes of mutual funds suddenly collapsing, and the RBI had to step in with massive liquidity support, he added. The liquidity support ensured the orderly functioning of the financial markets. The RBI is now moving towards a rebalancing of liquidity. It is making efforts to provide only that much liquidity which the system requires, Das noted. “Let me make it very clear that there will always be adequate liquidity to meet the requirements of the productive sectors of the economy. But slowly we want to rebalance the economy in a manner that banks are left with that much liquidity which they need and not excess,” he added. Earlier in his speech, the governor said banks should ensure that their business models and business strategies are conscious choices, following a robust strategic discussion in the Board, instead of being driven by a mechanical ‘follow the market’ approach.

He opined that decades of negotiations had exposed the Naga leaders to present situation for which they have come to terms with realities of contemporary politics and economy.

Xi talks tough at summit with Biden WARNS OF ‘PLAYING WITH FIRE’ OVER TAIWAN
Determined to uphold commitments to ensure ‘free & open’ Indo-Pacific: Biden WA S H I N G TO N / B E I JING, NOV 16 (PTI): US President Joe Biden discussed with his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping the importance of a “free and open” Indo-Pacific, and communicated Washington’s continued determination to uphold its commitments in the region, including the importance of freedom of navigation and safe overflight to the region’s prosperity, the White House said on Tuesday. During his much-anticipated virtual summit with Xi that lasted for about three and a half hours, President Biden welcomed the opportunity to speak candidly and straightforwardly to President Xi about America’s intentions and priorities across a range of issues. President Biden underscored that the United States will “continue to stand up for its interests and values and, together with our allies and partners, ensure the rules of the road for the 21st century advance an international system that is free, open, and fair,” the White House said in a readout of the meeting. He also discussed the importance of a free and open IndoPacific, and communicated the continued determination of the United States to
Over the last five years China has rapidly built artificial islands housing significant military infrastructure on what had been low-lying reefs. The United States has criticised China for militarising the islands by constructing long runways used by jet fighters and deploying anti-aircraft missiles. The US insists that freedom of navigation has to be maintained in the South China Sea and has been sending military flights, naval patrols and training missions around the strategically vital region. The Biden-Xi summit took place two months after the US, the UK and Australia announced a historic security pact in the Asia-Pacific, in what’s seen as an effort to counter China. The pact will let Australia build nuclear-powered submarines for the first time, using technology provided by the US. China has condemned the Aukus pact as “extremely irresponsible”. Prior to the formation of the Aukus alliance, President Biden declared in March that the US is “committed to a free, open, secure and prosperous Indo-Pacific region” in a rare op-ed penned with the leaders of India, Australia and Japan.
tion is an aspiration shared by all sons and daughters of the Chinese nation. We have patience and will strive for the prospect of peaceful reunification with utmost sincerity and efforts. That said, should the separatist forces for Taiwan independence provoke us, force our hands or even cross the red line, we will be compelled to take resolute measures,” he said. Significantly, Xi in his talks with Biden has referred to the just-concluded meeting of the CPC Plenum, which has reinforced his powers hailing him as “helmsman”, an honorific title reserved for party founder Mao Zedong. The Plenum took stock of the major achievements and historical experience
of the CPC in the past 100 years, Xi said. “Over the past century, the CPC has kept to its founding aspiration and mission of striving for the happiness of the Chinese people and rejuvenation of the Chinese nation,” he said. “A lot has been accomplished in this direction, but that is far from enough. More needs to be done.” Xi said since he took over power in 2012 he had stated “publicly that the Chinese people’s aspiration for a better life is the goal to strive for…” “Any attempt to stop this historical trend will be rejected by the Chinese people, and will by no means succeed,” he said in an apparent reference to the US attempts to contain China’s rise. “As China’s leader, serving the 1.4 billion Chinese people and working with them for a better life is a great challenge and a great responsibility. I shall put aside my own well-being and live up to people’s expectations,” he said. Asking Biden to seize “political leadership” to bring the bilateral ties back on track from the path of confrontation, Xi said man-
aging differences and sensitive issues in a constructive way is the way out to prevent China-US relations from getting “derailed or out of control”. “It is only natural for the two countries to have differences. The key is to manage them constructively so that they don’t magnify or exacerbate,” he said. But at the same time, he said, “China will certainly defend its sovereignty, security and development interests. It is important that the US properly handle the relevant issues with prudence”. “History is a fair judge. What a statesman does, be it right or wrong, be it an accomplishment or a failure, will all be recorded by history. It is hoped that President Biden will demonstrate political leadership and steer America’s China policy back on the track of reason and pragmatism,” he said. He said the two countries need to respect each other’s social systems and development paths, respect each other’s core interests and major concerns, and respect each other’s right to development

ISLAMABAD, NOV 16 (AGENCIES): Pakistan on Tuesday reaffirmed its strong opposition to the drive by the Group of Four – India, Brazil, Germany and Japan – for permanent seats on the United Nations Security Council (UNSC), Express Tribune reported. Pakistan’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Ambassador Munir Akram took part in a debate and stated that there is no justification for creating new centres of privilege within the UN. “Any country seeking a more frequent presence on the Security Council should do so by subjecting itself to the democratic process of periodic election by the General Assembly,” Munir maintained, as per the report. Referring to the Italy/Pakistan-led Uniting for Consensus (UfC) group’s bid for expansion of the 15-member council in the two-year non-permanent category, Munir stated that the group remains staunchly opposed to proposals for permanent membership for individual member states, the report said.

It also detained members of the old commission, and, according to reports in independent Myanmar media, pressured them to state there had been election fraud. The new commission declared last year’s election’s results invalid. The new notice from the commission said Suu Kyi, former President Win Myint, other leading figures in her party and the commission’s former chairman were “involved in electoral processes, election fraud and lawless actions” related to the polls. It accused 16 people of carrying out illegal actions, including compelling local election officials to obstruct military polling booths, threatening such officials in connection with advance voting for voters over 60 years old, forcing local officials to approve voting lists that included ineligible voters and interfering in campaigning to favour Suu Kyi’s party.
WASHINGTON, NOV 16 (PTI): The US has issued a level two and three travel advisories for India and Pakistan, saying while American citizens are urged to reconsider travel to Pakistan due to terrorism and sectarian violence, those going to India must exercise increased caution due to crime and terrorism. BA N G KO K , N OV 1 6 (AP): Myanmar’s state election commission announced it is prosecuting the country’s ousted leader, Aung San Suu Kyi, and 15 other senior political figures for alleged fraud in last November’s general election. The announcement was published Tuesday in the state-run Global New Light of Myanmar newspaper and other official media. Allegations of widespread electoral fraud were the main reason cited by the military for its Feb 1 seizure of power that toppled Suu Kyi’s government. Her National League for Democracy party was about to begin a second five-year term in office after its landslide victory in the polls. The army-backed Union Solidarity and Development Party suffered unexpectedly heavy losses. Independent observers, such as the Asian Network for Free Elections, found no evidence of substantive irregularities in the polls, though they criticised some aspects. The action by the Union Election Commission could potentially result
Joe Biden and Xi Jinping during the virtual summit.

BEIJING/WASHINGTON, NOV 16 (PTI): Striking a tough posture at the much-awaited virtual summit with his US counterpart Joe Biden on Tuesday, President Xi Jinping said that China will “certainly defend” its sovereignty and security interests as he warned that whoever plays with fire over Taiwan will “get burnt”. In a lengthy speech touching a host of issues at the over three-hour-long summit, Xi, fresh from last week’s ruling Communist Party of China Plenum meet endorsing an unprecedented third term for him from next year and perhaps for life, pointed Beijing’s “red lines” on a host of issues, including Taiwan, and said China’s rise is an “inevitable trend of history” and cannot be stopped. On Taiwan, where China has pressed over 200 military jets into the estranged islands air defence zone ratcheting tensions, 68-yearold Xi ascribed the tensions to the repeated attempts by the Taiwan authorities to look for US support for their independence agenda as well as the intention of some Americans to use Taiwan to

Neymar to miss Argentina-Brazil qualifier Kohli’s role as batter will remain the same: Rohit
BUENOS AIRES, NOV 16 (IANS): Brazil forward Neymar will miss his team’s 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifier against Argentina because of a leg muscle injury, the Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) has said. The 29-year-old was ruled out of Tuesday’s (Wednesday, Nov 17 IST) clash in the central-western Argentine city of San Juan after feeling pain in the adductor area of his left thigh. “Neymar Jr said he felt insecure about the situation and, as there is not enough time to carry out complementary exams, the technical commission decided to rest the player who will not travel with the team,” a CBF statement read. Meanwhile, Argentina manager Lionel Scaloni confirmed that Lionel Messi would play, playing down concerns about the 34-year-old’s fitness, Xinhua reports. The Paris Saint-Germain forward made a 14-minute cameo appearance off the bench in Argentina’s 1-0 win over Uruguay on November 12, having missed Paris Saint-Germain’s last two games because of knee and hamstring problems. “He was physically fit the other day and in the end we decided that the

best thing was for him to play a few minutes so that he could get a feel for it and he is confirmed to play against Brazil,” Scaloni said. Brazil head the 10-team South American zone standings with 34 points from 12 matches, six points ahead of second-placed Argentina. The Selecao secured their place at next year’s World Cup in Qatar with a 1-0 win over Colombia in Sao Paulo on November 11. The top four teams in the group will automatically qualify for football’s showpiece tournament while the fifthranked side will advance to an intercontinental playoff.
JAIPUR, NOV 16 (PTI): India’s new T20 captain Rohit Sharma doesn’t foresee any change in Virat Kohli’s role as a batter in the new set-up and expects his predecessor to continue dishing out impactful performances. Kohli has relinquished his T20 captaincy and from Wednesday’s opening T20 International against New Zealand, Rohit will be the full-time skipper in the
shortest format going into next year’s World Cup. When asked how he perceives the former captain’s role, Rohit was precise in his reply. “It’s very simple. Whatever he has been doing till now, his role in this team remains the same,” the Indian captain said ahead of the first T20 International against the Black Caps. “He is a very important player for the team
and whenever he plays, he creates an impact. From team’s perspective, he is an important player and when you play each game, the roles are different.” The roles of each player change as per match conditions and all players, including Kohli, are open to that, insisted the new captain. “When you are batting first, the role is different compared to when you are
batting second. Based on games that we are playing, roles will keep changing and everyone is open to that.” The kind of experience that Kohli brings into the T20 set-up will only add to their strength. “I am sure when Virat comes back, it will only strengthen our team because of the experience and the kind of batsman he is, it’s only going to add up to our squad.”

FIFA WC Qualifiers: Italy miss out; Kane confirms England’s ticket
PARIS, NOV 16 (AGENCIES): European champions Italy missed out on automatic qualification for next year’s World Cup after being held to a goalless draw by Northern Ireland in Belfast on Monday, ceding top spot in Group C to Switzerland who beat Bulgaria 4-0. The Italians needed to match Switzerland’s result to qualify directly but while Roberto Mancini’s side could only stutter to a stalemate, the Swiss went on the rampage in Lucerne to book their ticket for Qatar. There they will find England, the team the Italians beat in the Euro 2020 final in July, who clinched their qualification with a rampant Harry Kane bagging four goals in 15 minutes in a 10-0 win in San Marino. “The qualification was earned away in Budapest, in Warsaw, in Albania and I’ve got to credit all of our players and staff on a really good year,” said England manager Gareth Southgate.
England’s Harry Kane with manager Gareth Southgate and assistant manager Steve Northern Ireland’s Craig Cathcart and Italy’s Leonardo Holland after being substituted. Bonucci after the FIFA World Cup Qualifying match.
“The mentality, even in a game like tonight, we can’t do anything about the level of the opposition but the way we played was terrific.” Germany, Denmark, France, Belgium, Croatia, Spain and Serbia have also qualified directly from Europe. One more place
will go to one of Netherlands, Norway or Turkey on Tuesday with the remaining spots to be settled through the play-offs in March. The same fate befell Italy in 2018 when they famously failed to qualify for the World Cup after a miserable aggregate defeat
to Sweden. “Right now it is what it is, we struggle to score goals, we always have control of the play... It’s a shame because the group should have been finished before this match,” Mancini told RAI. “I have faith, let’s see in March, but we might even win it.”
The Italians rarely troubled the home side, only coming to life when news trickled through of Switzerland’s goal-scoring in Lucerne. Noah Okafor’s strike put the Swiss ahead three minutes into the second half and after Xherdan Shaqiri hit the post, Ruben
Vargas doubled the score. The Swiss then had two goals ruled out for offside but when Cedric Itten headed in for 3-0 after 72 minutes, it meant Italy needed to win by two in Belfast. As the Italians grew more frantic and almost gave away a goal to Conor Washington, who
had a shot scrambled off the line, the Swiss nailed the outcome with Remo Freuler making it 4-0 in added time. Hurry-Kane hits San Marino England needed just a point from their trip to San Marino, the lowest-ranked of FIFA’s 210 competing nations. San Marino had lost 36 of their 37 previous home World Cup qualifiers, losing the last 35 in a row by an aggregate score of 146-7. The one nondefeat came in a 0-0 draw with Turkey in 1993. This time they were unfortunate to come up against a hungry Kane who scored four goals in the space of 15 minutes in the first half. The outcome was never in doubt once Harry Maguire headed in the opener after five minutes. A Filippo Fabbri own goal made matters worse but that set the stage for Kane. His first came from the penalty spot in the 27th minute and he netted again
with a scuffed effort five minutes later. His second penalty in the 39th minute completed his fourth international hat-trick and his second in four days, having also put three past Albania on Friday. Two minutes later he produced the best of the lot with some neat control inside the box to bag his fourth which took him to 48 goals for England, level with Gary Lineker and behind only Bobby Charlton (49) and Wayne Rooney (53). “Every time I wear an England shirt I am proud and when I score goals it is one of the nicest feelings I can have in my career. Nice to be among those names,” said Kane. Emile Smith Rowe, Tyrone Mings and Tammy Abraham and Bukayo Saka all found the net in the second half as England closed their qualifying campaign in style, finishing six points clear of Poland who go into the play-offs after losing 2-1 at home to Hungary.
Andrey Rublev storms back into form, Novak Djokovic is the Sindhu and Lakshya advance to overcomes Tsitsipas in Nitto ATP Finals ‘GOAT’ for Sampras second round of Indonesia Masters
Andrey Rublev
TURIN, NOV 16 (IANS): Russia’s world No. 5 Andrey Rublev stormed back to his winning ways, defeating Greece’s world No. 4 Stefanos Tsitsipas 6-4, 6-4 in the ‘Green Group’ of the elite year-end Nitto ATP Finals here. Rublev, who arrived for the year-end tournament in Turin struggling to regain his form in recent weeks, was at his heavyhitting best as he didn’t face a break point on way to defeating Tsitsipas in an hour and 30 minutes. “I think these are the moments that we are practicing for, that we are living for: to be here and to enjoy this atmosphere, to
play great tennis and for the spectators to enjoy,” Rublev told atptour.com on Monday evening. “(All) I could do my best today, I did and I’m really happy.” Rublev dominated the contest with his strong serves, winning 90 per cent of points behind his first delivery. Thanks to his booming first serves, the Russian rarely allowed the Greek opponent a look at his vulnerable second serve. “When you ser ve good, it’s always the key,” Rublev said. “But it was not even just the serve. I was returning really aggressive, from the baseline I was also really aggressive. Today I
played a great match and I’m really happy.” The victory for Rublev ties Serbian world No. 1 Novak Djokovic at the top of the Green Group, with each player level at a win apiece. Meanwhile, Djokovic was awarded the year-end ATP Tour No. 1 trophy here following his opening win at the Nitto ATP Finals against Casper Ruud. This is the seventh time the Serbian has earned the honour, passing Pete Sampras for the most yearend No. 1 finishes in the history of the ATP Rankings (since 1973). Djokovic has also achieved the feat in 2011-12, 2014-15, 2018 and 2020. “It feels amazing and it feels even better when you win a match and then get your hands on the trophy that I have been blessed to lift seven times. (I have won) one more than Pete Sampras, who was my childhood hero. He was the one that got me into tennis. He was also an inspiration to me and I dreamt of being a Wimbledon champion and World No. 1 like he was,” Djokovic said.
Novak Djokovic
L O N D O N , N OV 1 6 (AGENCIES): The debate over the Greatest of All Time (GOAT) in men’s tennis has divided opinions for years but American Pete Sampras has no doubt that Serbian Novak Djokovic is the one. Djokovic, Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal are currently tied at 20 major singles titles each and fans and pundits have continued to argue over who should be considered the ‘GOAT’ Djokovic, at 34, the youngest of the triumvirate, has been unmatched in consistency and success in recent years and has already claimed Federer’s longstanding record for holding the men’s world number one ranking for most weeks. This month the Serbian broke a tie with his childhood idol Sampras by clinching the year-end
world number one ranking for a record seven times. “Seven years, for him, I’m sure he sees it as a bonus to all the majors that he’s won,” Sampras, who won 14 major singles titles before retiring after the 2002 U.S. Open, was quoted as saying by the ATP Tour website. “But I think he’ll appreciate it more as he gets older. He did it at a time where he dominated two of the greats, in Roger and Rafael, and he handled the next generation of players very well – all at the same time. “I do think what Novak’s done over the past 10 years, winning the majors, being consistent, finishing number one for seven years, to me it’s a clear sign that he is the greatest of all time.” Djokovic, who also won a record 37th ATP Masters title in Paris this month, was presented with the year-end world number one trophy on Monday in Turin, Italy, after his victory over Norway’s Casper Ruud in the season-ending ATP Finals. “I was ‘The Man’ for those number of years, and he’s been ‘The Man’ even more so,” Sampras said.

Sindhu, who was last seen in action at the French Open semifinals, beat Thailand’s Supanida Katethong 21-15, 21-19 in a women’s singles match, which lasted 43 minutes. Up against the world No 33 Supanida in the round of 32, the ace Indian shuttler started well and
Lakshya Sen
raced to an 11-5 lead. The Thai shuttler then fought back and clawed the score back to 16-13, however, Sindhu used her experience to close out the first game 21-15. In the second game, Sindhu faced a stiff challenge. With Supanida fighting tooth and nail for every point, the Indian needed to be on her toes in order to edge it 21-19. Reigning world champion Sindhu will now face world No 47 Clara Azurmendi of Spain in the round of 16. Azurmendi defeated Indonesia’s Fitri-
ani Fitriani 21-18, 21-14 in her first round clash. I n m e n’s s i n g l e s, Lakshya Sen edged out world No 10 Japan’s Kanta Tsuneyama in the.firstround clash.
