Correspondents

K O H I M A , M AY 1 7 (NPN): Incessant rains triggered a massive mudslide causing blockade on National Highway-29 at Chainage 155+245 major steel bridge around 22-23 km from the State capital, Kohima. On Tuesday, hundreds of vehicles plying the highway were stranded for several hours, while police had a difficult time trying to unlock the snarled-up traffic. When contacted, senior superintendent of police Kohima K Sophie informed Nagaland Post that continuous mudslide on the road affected movement of vehicles while Oasis Technocons Ltd workers were at the spot doing the job of clearing the mud. He said police were at the site directing traffic amid incessant rains to ensure that vehicles could pass through. Light vehicles were allowed to pass through

Core Committee to meet Shah today

Correspondent

K O H I M A , M AY 1 7 (NPN): Core Committee on Naga Political Issue led by chief minister Neiphiu Rio will be meeting Union Home minister Amit Shah on Wednesday and return to Nagaland on Thursday. Highly placed sources informed Nagaland Post that the Core Committee comprising of Rio, deputy CM Y. Patton, UDA chairperson T.R. Zeliang and UDA cochairman and NPF legislature party leader Kuzholuzo (Azo) Nienu also held separate meetings with Centre’s representative for Naga talks A.K Mishra and leaders of the Working Committee of the NNPGs in Delhi on Tuesday. When contacted, the Core Committee members who were currently in Delhi remained tight-lipped about their meeting with Mishra and the NNPGs, even as both the meetings were held for over an hour. Sources also informed that the Committee, without any delay, will be meeting the NSCN (I-M) leadership as soon as they return from Delhi. It was also learnt that the Core Committee members would also be meeting Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. Meanwhile, there were also rumours doing the rounds that some legislator(s) were contemplating to resign in order strengthen the demand for an early political solution to the decades old Naga issue before the State Assembly elections, slated to be held by February 2023.

while heavy vehicles were allowed only after 6 p.m. Sophie expressed ire at the indiscipline of some drivers who had only made matters worse during the traffic snarl. He said these drivers tried to forcefully drive past and ended up causing more problem by preventing vehicles to pass through in a single file. Due to the heavy traffic during the evening hours on this road, Sophie said

29 when an overloaded truck was stuck in the mudslide caused by incessant rains. The particular bottleneck was expected to be cleared by Wednesday morning after the truck is towed away on Tuesday night. The heavily loaded truck was on its way to Manipur, when it got stuck right crossing the steel girder bridge at Peducha, around 23 km from the State Capital

on Monday night. Sechü (Zubza) SDO (Civil) Tiayanger Jamir informed this correspondent that the truck would be towed around midnight Tuesday when traffic flow was less. He said the job of towing and clearing the point would be done midnight and take three to four hours, as the administration did not want to disrupt the heavy movement of vehicles.

CNSA says Patton’s remark was not ill intended

Rally against attempted rape in Jalukie

D I M A P U R , M AY 1 7 (NPN): Central Nagaland Students’ Association (CNSA) - Ao Students’ Conference (AKM), Lotha Students’ Union (LSU) and Sumi Kiphimi Kuqhakulu (SKK)- responded to the charge made against deputy chief minister Y. Patton by Chakhesang Students’ Union (CSU) which alleged that the remark was “an ill intent” to create division among Nagas on tribal lines. CNSA president Himato Yeptho and general secretary Lipemo M Tsopoe backed Patton and described that his speech at the CNTC meeting was “very positive manner and not intended

heavy machineries would be pressed into service only by midnight otherwise, the entire road would remain blocked for hours. He said opening of two-way traffic would depend on the weather condition as mud-slide was continuously happening. Traffic to be restored by today: Meanwhile, another traffic jam took place at another stretch of the NH-

to hurt the sentiments of the tribe”. CNSA said Patton had clearly stated that the reservation policy should be implemented in a pocketwise system in order to give equal opportunity to lower section of the society and give ample opportunity without any discrimination on tribal lines. It said Patton had also remarked that some parts of Ao area (Mangkolemba area), Lotha (Bhandari area) and Sumi (Satoi areas) were the most backward where reservation was needed. Hence, CNSA said it found Patton’s speech at the CNTC programme to have

had no ill-intention towards the Chakhesang tribe. It said Patton’s speech was only an expression of concern over the present system of reservation policy which should unite Nagaland to go handin-hand without any bias to build a new Nagaland. CNSA backed Patton’s statement and urged upon the government to review the reservation policy at the earliest. It also urged upon all right-thinking citizens not to misunderstand nor misinterpret Patton’s statement, but take things in a positive accord for future reformation in the government policies and work unitedly as brothers.

India aims to roll out 6G telecom network by end of decade: PM NEW DELHI, MAY 17 (PTI): India is targeting the rollout of 6G telecom network, which will provide ultra high speed internet connectivity, by the end of the decade, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on Tuesday. India currently has 3G and 4G telecom networks and companies are gearing up to launch 5G over the next few months. Speaking at the silver jubilee event of telecom sector regulator TRAI here, he said it is estimated that the 5G network rollout will add USD 450 billion to the Indian economy. “This is not just increasing internet speed but also the pace of development and creating jobs,” he said, adding the 5G technology will bring positive change in governance of the country, ease of living and ease of doing business.

Narendra Modi (PTI)

It will boost growth in agriculture, health, education, infrastructure and logistics, he said. Connectivity, Modi said, will decide the progress of the country in the 21st century and so modern day infrastructure needs to be rolled out. According to the prime minister, a task force has started work on rolling out the 6G network by the end of the decade. Taking potshots at the

previous Congress-led UPA government, Modi said the 2G era was symbolic of policy paralysis and corruption. The country, under his government, has moved transparently to 4G and is now going to 5G and TRAI has played a very important role in this transition, Modi said. Indigenous 5G test bed in telecom sector is an important step in India’s self-reliance, he added. Telecom minister Ashwani Vaishnaw said the country’s scientists and engineers have developed a complete 4G stack which is ready for deployment by the BSNL and the 5G stack is at an advanced stage of development. “By the end of this year, we should see our indigenously developed 5G technology stack,” Vaishnaw said.

TACMCA cautions G&M deptt on coal auction PDMGDVA threatens to resume indefinite stir

D I M A P U R , M AY 1 7 (NPN): Tuli Area Coal Mining Contractors’ Association (TACMCA) has termed as “nothing but just a mockery” over the explanation of the Geology & Mining (G&M) department that “Coal auctioning” was in the interest of stakeholders. Tuli Area Coal Mining Contractors’ Association president Olemmar and secretary Tento Lcr demanded that the Geology & Mining department “ascertain and justify” the word “stakeholders” since TACMCA was a part and parcel as stakeholders.

According to TACMCA, the department’s stand had “no taste of any factual conclusion on its entirety.” The contractors’ association cautioned that if the government went ahead with its proposal to auction Nagaland coal in spite of stakeholders’ strong resentment, it will, as resolved at its executive meeting on May 16, 2022, not allow a single punch of coal to be transported from Tuli sector as well as from its stockyard/depot to any firm, association and or individual through the said auction process.

Further, the association suggested that instead of pursuing the auction process against the wishes of stakeholder in particular and the coal mining laborers in general, the Geology & Mining department should revoke the impugned order of cancellation & invalidation of all No Objection Certificate (NOC) for Rake Outward booking of Nagaland Coal from various loading points. TACMCA demanded that fresh NOCs be reissued and allow indigenous people to conveniently “advocate their respective busi-

ness of coal activities”. The association also maintained that stakeholders have been regularly paying royalty and other leviable taxes to the government as determined by the Geology & Mining department, government of Nagaland. TACMA warned that in the event the department acted against the wishes and desire of the stakeholders, then it would resort to democratic protest against the move, within its sector and for which the department would be responsible for any untoward eventualities.

D I M A P U R , M AY 1 7 (NPN): Phek District Maytas-Gayatri Damaged Victim Association (PDMGDVA) Hq Chozuba town under Phek district has once again threatened to impose indefinite road blockade after May 25, 2022 if the state respondent failed to file the additional affidavit on or before May 25, 2022. In representation addressed to the state chief secretary through DC Phek, the PDMGDVA convenor Pushovoyi Nyekha and con-convenors Vepozoyi Theyo, Mudonyi Shijoh and Nehusa Cukhamu

Niki-led NSCN (K) meets Dimapur-based Southern Naga CSOs D I M A P U R , M AY 1 7 (NPN): Niki Sumi-led NSCN/GPRN (K) held a coordination meeting with a delegation of Dimapurbased Southern Naga civil society organisations (CSOs) comprising Southern Naga Union, Poumai Hoho, Tangkhul Naga Long, Mao Naga Union, Maram Naga Union, Lamkang Naga Union, Maring Naga Union, Moyon Naga Union, Thangal Naga Union and Anal Naga Union at the ato kilonser’s office Monday. According to MIP, NSCN/GPRN president Niki Sumi, in his speech stressed on unity among Nagas to achieve any goal. It said, Niki also gave a clarion

call to all Naga tribal leaders to be more committed and active in uniting all Naga political groups and the people at large, as no solution was likely to be achieved unless Nagas united for one common goal irrespective of boundary demarcation. Niki said it was the Naga tribal leaders who

could work and bring the Nagas together, which would further give more weightage to their voice for solution. Niki reaffirmed NSCN/GPRN’s stand on peace and unity among all sections of Naga society and reminded the tribal leadersthat the group stood for unity first and solution second.

On his part, ato kilonser Starson Lamkang appreciated the positive response from the Southern Naga CSOs. Starson said Nagas must do away with ego and work together in their own interest. He called upon the leaders to be ambassadors of peace and unity. Speaking on the occasion, representatives of Southern Nagas said Nagas had fought together for their rights and therefore must resolve their differences and remain united to achieve their dreams and aspirations. The delegates denounced all sorts of violence that was against peace and wellbeing of the people and said lack of sincerity and commitment

of the leaders and difference of ideas among them would confuse the people and prove a setback for the Nagas at large. Appreciating the stand and commitment of the group, the leaders expressed the hope that Almighty God would surely answer the prayers of Nagas for peace and unity to prevail and for long lasting solution to the Naga political movement. Chaired by GPRN secretary Inovi Naga, the meeting earlier commenced with an invocation prayer by Nihokhu Sumi, kilonser of PR and NGOs, while speaker of National Tatar Hoho Mhonbemo Tsanglao proposed the vote of thanks.

pointed out that when the Chakhesang Public Organisation (CPO)’s PIL pertaining to damaged compensation was “seemingly reaching” conclusion in the Gauhati High Court, the state respondent again pleaded the Court on April 6, 2022 for more time to file a ‘clarificatory affidavit’. PDMGDVA said the Court accordingly granted four-week time to the state respondent, and listed the matter on May 11, 2022 categorically stating that no further time would be granted for the said purpose. The association, however, said that when the

matter came before the Court on May 11, 2022, the State Respondent once again pleaded for more time on “flimsy ground.” It said the Court, in spite of last order not to grant further time, granted another two-week time to the state respondent and the matter was listed again on May 25, 2022. Stating that it was not unaware if payment for the damaged compensation was thrusted upon State Government alone, the association said it would become a burden beyond its capacity. (Cont’d on p-8)

India starts testing flu patients ‘selectively’ as Covid numbers plateau NEW DELHI, MAY 17 (AGENCIES): India has been reporting over 2,000 COVID-19 cases every day for a while now. And now the government has decided to widen the net by selectively conducting 6-8 lakh RT-PCR tests per day, as per a report by LiveMint. It will test people with flu-like symptoms of cold, cough and fever. “Now RTPCR testing is being done for those patients with symptoms like fever, cough and cold or with flu-like symptoms visiting at the sentinel sites such as hospitals,” said a government official who wished to remain anonymous.

After the third wave, a lot of people have rated the pandemic causing virus as ‘mild’; refusing to visit the hospitals or even test. This new strategy intends to keep a close watch on the virus and its patterns for scientists to study it closely. The government is also known to have expanded sewage sample surveillance. “Sewage samples let us know that if cases are going to increase in any particular area, the viral load in the sample increases,” said another official. Sewage testing involves surveillance and monitoring of the sewage water or the water that we flush down the toilets. K Y M C

Bridge swept away in Meghalaya Many more areas in Manipur flooded as heavy rains continue

Shymplong bridge. Correspondent SHILLONG, MAY 17: Incessant rains in Meghalaya for the past few days has caused major infrastructure damage across the state with several people remaining cut off and facing hardship. A bridge on SonapurBorghat road near Shymplong village in East Jaintia Hills district was washed away near the India-Bangla border. This bridge was the lifeline of six remote villages in the area to connect with the other parts of Meghalaya and the rest of the Country. The washing away of the bridge has affected over 8000 villagers residing in the six remote villages of Shymplong, Lejri, Huroi, Hingaria, Lahalein and Borsara.

Assistant headman of Umkiang village, Kynjaimon Amse said all the six villages are now cut off from the rest of the state after the RCC bridge at Shymplong was washed away on Tuesday morning. The villagers are now short on food and medical supplies, Amse said, adding the only alternative is to carry the essential supplies on foot trekking 40-50 Km, which might take a couple of days. These villages have no proper healthcare centre and the nearest Public Health Centre is at Umkiang village on National Highway 6. These villages are only 2-8 kms away from the Indo-Bangla border and 50-60 kms away from NH-6. East Jaintia Hills District Magistrate, Abhilash

Baranwal has imposed Section 144 Cr.P.C prohibiting any vehicular movement near the bridge and attempts to cross the stream on foot and boats. “Efforts are on to restore connectivity of the villages and PWD engineers have been engaged to find ways to do it. The district authorities are also trying to establish contact with the villagers. Efforts are already on to send essential commodities to the villages,” Baranwal said. Meanwhile, a vital road - Sonapur-Ratacherra stretch on the NH-6 - in East Jaintia Hills district remained closed due to landslides. The road connects Meghalaya with Mizoram, Tripura, Barak Valley (Assam) and parts of Manipur. There was heavy landslide in different stretches of the highway last week, but these were cleared on Monday, but the fresh landslide left hundreds of commuters and goods laden trucks stranded Officials said the National Highway Authority of India ( NHAI) and PWD are trying to clear the landslide to restore the road connectivity. No loss of life has been reported so far.

Correspondent IMPHAL, MAY 17: Nonstop heavy rains led to worsening of the flood situation in Manipur as more areas in Jiribam and twin capital districts have been affected. TURA (MEGHALAYA), MAY 17: Chief Minister Conrad Sangma on Tuesday inaugurated the waste-tofuel plant, the first of its kind in Meghalaya, in the presence of Ambassador of South Korea to India, Chang Jae-Bok. The plant situated at Tura Municipal Board landfill site at Rongkhon Songital in West Garo Hills district will be operated by a South Korean firm, Chamhana GW. Conrad Sangma at the inauguartion of waste to energy plant in Tura. the landfill site would take about 9 to 12 months to be converted since they first need to segregate the mud from the waste,” the Chief Minister said. Sangma said the project would be expanded to Shillong, Jowai, Nongstoin and other districts as well in the coming days.

Recalling his visit to the landfill site way back in 2019, the Chief Minister said the amount of garbage dumped at the site poses a great challenge on how to dispose of the waste and said that with the collaboration with the Chamhana Company, the fuel plant is expected to reduce waste

and revert and recover the environment as before. Moreover, he said the project has been envisioned as a working model demonstration (Proof of Concept), to manage the daily incoming municipal garbage of Tura town and its adjoining areas. Talking at length about the project, the Chief Minister informed that the project was conceptualised way back in 2019 but due to the pandemic it had to be put on hold. The currently installed waste to energy plant will work by converting all waste except recyclables like metals, glass wood and e-waste, construction waste into fuel briquettes. The fuel briquettes can then be used as a replacement for coal and charcoal.

this landmark project will be inter-connected with cross passage for evacuation in case of any emergency. The strategic multimodal transportation system intends to integrate the rail and highway network via the Jamurihat-Silghat axis towards North Assam, Tawang and the rest of Arunachal Pradesh. This can be used for civilian as well as strategic purposes. As per the estimate, the government’s total expenditure for these tunnels would amount to around Rs 7,000 crore. Earlier, National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL), a company under the Road Transport Ministry, had put forward a proposal for the construction of twin tunnels

specifically for vehicles and had estimated an expenditure of Rs 12,800 crore. Meanwhile, the tunnel will start about 9 km upstream of the existing Kaliabhomora (Tezpur) road bridge and it will connect Jakhlabandha railway station on the south bank and Dhaliabil railway station on the northern bank of Brahmaputra. The underwater tunnel project will be an engineering wonder which will prove to be strategically beneficial for the country by reducing travel time between Assam and Arunachal Pradesh. The proposed tunnels will be constructed using tunnel boring machines and may take around two to twoand-a-half years to complete after the work starts.

NEW DELHI, MAY 17 (PTI): Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Tuesday held three back-to-back meetings with top officials of the security establishment to assess the prevailing situation in Jammu and Kashmir, including the recent killings of civilians as well as reviewed arrangements for the forthcoming Amarnath Yatra for which the UT administration will provide RFID tags to every pilgrim. While Lt Governor of J&K Manoj Sinha was present in all the three meetings, National Security Advisor Ajit Doval and Army Chief Gen Manoj Pande attended the meetings to discuss the security situation in the UT. Senior officials from the centre, para-military forces and the UT administration were also in these meetings. Later in a statement, the Union Home Ministry said the J&K chief secretary informed the meeting that each pilgrim will be provided with a Radio Frequency

NAGALAND POST, DIMAPUR WEDNESDAY, MAY 18, 2022

This is the first Yatra after the COVID-19 pandemic, and due to the high altitude, adequate arrangements will have to be made for yatris who have any health-related problems, he said. The home minister asked for an adequate number of oxygen cylinders, medical beds at an altitude of more than 6,000 feet and deployment of ambulances and helicopters to deal with any emergency medical situation. All categories of transport services should be in-

creased during the Amarnath Yatra for the convenience of passengers. During the meeting, it was also decided to enable WiFi hotspots to ensure connectivity throughout the 39 km of the Yatra route from Pahalgam in South Kashmir. The other route is through Baltal in central Kashmir where a pilgrim treks for nearly 15 km. The Yatra, which presents a big security challenge for the government, could not take place in 2020 and 2021 due to the coronavirus pandemic and was cut short

in 2019 just before the abrogation of Article 370. About three lakh pilgrims are likely to take part in the pilgrimage, scheduled to begin on June 30 and expected to end on August 11. About 12,000 paramilitary personnel (120 companies) in addition to Jammu and Kashmir Police are expected to be deployed along the two pilgrimage routes, one from Pahalgam and the other via Baltal, officials said. Drone cameras will help the security forces to ensure the protection of the pilgrims. Besides the Amarnath pilgrimage, the meetings also reviewed the security arrangement especially in the wake of several targeted killings, including of Kashmiri Pandits, in Kashmir. There has been a spurt in attacks on non-Muslims and outsiders living in the Kashmir valley since the abrogation of Article 370 of the Constitution in August 2019 which accorded special status to Jammu and Kashmir.

NEW DELHI, MAY 17 (PTI): India on Tuesday described as “farcical” a resolution passed by the National Assembly of Pakistan on the delimitation exercise in Jammu and Kashmir, saying the neighbouring country has no locus standi to interfere in internal matters of India. External Affairs Ministry Spokesperson Arindam Bagchi categorically rejected the resolution and asked Islamabad to stop cross-border terrorism and shut down its “infrastructure of terrorism”. “We categorically reject the farcical resolution passed by the National Assembly of Pakistan on the subject of the delimitation exercise in the Indian Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir,” he said. “Pakistan has no locus standi to pronounce on or interfere in matters that are

internal to India, including the Indian territories under Pakistan’s illegal and forcible occupation,” Bagchi added. The spokesperson was responding to media queries regarding the resolution passed by the Pakistan National Assembly. “It is regrettable that instead of putting their own house in order, the leadership in Pakistan continues to interfere in India’s internal affairs and engage in baseless and provocative anti-India propaganda,” he said. Bagchi said the entire territory of the union territories of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh “have been, is and shall always remain an integral part of India.” “The delimitation exercise in the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir is a democratic exercise based on principles of extensive stakeholder consultation and participation,” he said. Bagchi asked Pakistan to refrain from effecting any further material changes in the status of Pakistan occupied Jammu, Kashmir and Ladakh (PoJKL) and vacate the Indian territories that are under its “illegal and forcible occupation”.

PANAJI, MAY 17 (IANS): Citing lack of reservation of wards for OBC category, Leader of Opposition Michael Lobo on Tuesday demanded to postpone Panchayat elections in Goa by four months and reserve the wards as per data of OBC commission. Congress leader Lobo addressed a press conference and said that the government should respect the judgment of the SC to decide reservation upon data submitted by OBC commission and not by Block Development Officer’s. “Reservations should not take place as MLA’s (in power) want. It should be fair practice and OBC should get justice through the proper process,” he said adding OBC commission can assess correctness of data. He said that if the government goes against the judgment of the SC, then someone will go to court and bring it to the notice. Thus the process of election will be stopped. “OBC should get its 27 per cent reservation. For this, the government should seek data from the commission and submit it to the election commission for further process. OBCs should not be deprived of their rights,” Lobo said.

In the second phase, a total of 29,049 candidates had filed nominations for 12,648 posts -- 10,614 panchayat members, 872 mukhiyas, 1,059 panchayat committee members and 103 zilla parishad members. After the withdrawal and rejection of nominations, there were 26,965 candidates in the fray in 50 blocks across 16 districts. Among the seats decided uncontested are 4,975 panchayat member posts, six mukhiya posts, 111 panchayat samiti member posts and one zilla parishad member post, officials said. Now, 21,872 candidates will fight the polls for 7,029 seats -- 5,123 panchayat members, 866 mukhiyas, 938 panchayat committee members and 102 zilla parishad members, according

to the data provided by the State Election Commission. A total of 872 panchayats will go to the polls on May 19. The counting of votes will take place on May 22, officials said. More than 38.82 lakh voters, including 18.92 lakh women, are eligible to exercise their franchise at 10,614 polling booths in the second phase polls. A total of 4,451 polling stations have been declared sensitive, while 3,700 are hyper-sensitive. Meanwhile, the counting of votes for 1,127 panchayats that went to the polls in the first phase is underway since 8 am in 21 districts amid tight security, officials said. The first of the four-phase panchayat polls took place on May 14. Over 68 per cent of the 52 lakh voters exercised their franchise. Barring a few complaints, the counting is going peacefully across the districts, officials said. In Chatra College counting centre, candidates created an uproar, alleging that ballot papers of booth 66 were tampered with. Chatra District Election Officer (DEO) Anjali Yadav said they were looking into the allegation.

India and Africa must respond to uncertain world: Jaishankar

S Jaishankar

NEW DELHI, MAY 17 (PTI): India and Africa must respond to the “volatile and uncertain” world and important lessons can be learnt from the COVID-19 pandemic and knock-on effects of the Ukraine conflict, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar said on Tuesday. In an address at a book release event, Jaishankar said development partnership and capacity building is at the core of India’s relationship with the African continent and it speaks for New Delhi’s shared desire of developing together as “equals”. He said India was “very conscious” of the expanding threats of radicalism, fundamentalism and terrorism to African societies and both sides have been cooperating in dealing with the challenges. “Today, our ties too

must respond to the volatile and uncertain world that we confront,” he said. “There are important lessons to be learnt from the pandemic disruption. The stresses from the knock-on effects of the Ukraine conflict are also relevant,” Jaishankar said. Highlighting India’s development partnership with the African continent, he said the “difference that we have made to the hard and soft infrastructure is something of which we can be justifiably proud.” “To date, India has completed 189 projects in Africa, with 76 at the execution stage and 68 today at the pre-execution stage. Financed by lines of credit with an outlay of over USD 12 billion, they extend to over 41 countries,” he said. The external affairs minister said Prime Minister Narendra Modi has not only brought new thinking and energy into the ties but also devoted a much higher degree of attention, resources and capabilities to this account. Referring to IndiaAfrica trade cooperation, Jaishankar said the story on this front is also an encouraging one.

KOLKATA, MAY 17 (IANS): West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee on Tuesday expressed concern over growing incidents of miscreants from neighbouring Jharkhand and Bihar coming to West Bengal carrying firearms. Her remarks have come at a time when the Union Home Ministry has alerted the four eastern Indian states of West Bengal, Bihar, Jharkhand and Odisha over the possible resurgence of left-wing extremist (LWE) or Maoist activities in their erstwhile stronghold pockets in their four states. “Bihar has an illegal arms manufacturing unit. Miscreants from Bihar and Jharkhand are entering Bengal carrying

firearms through trains. They are hiding their arms under the vegetables to hoodwink the police. The GRP seems to be not much active in checking this,” the CM said at an administrative review meeting at West Midnapore district on Tuesday afternoon. At the review meeting, Banerjee expressed displeasure over reports on illegal wood smuggling rampant in the forest areas in the locality. “I have reports that certain panchayat members and certain employees of the local police and forest department are involved in this illegal trade. I direct the district administration to take strong actions against the offenders,” the chief minister said.

ASF re-emerges

onsoon also heralds the onset of various diseases related with the environment. Monsoon does reduce the body immunity and makes it susceptible to many diseases commonly associated with the weather. There have been some severe cases of viral fever and malaria while health authorities are working on various ways to combat threat from these diseases. What is also a matter of concern is the report that Swine flu or African Swine Flu (ASF)has remerged in parts of North East and also in Nagaland’s Mokokchung and Longleng districts, as per reports. Swine fever, according to medical science, is a respiratory disease, caused by influenza type A which infects pigs. There are several types and the infection is constantly changing. Medical science states that the virus contains genetic material that is typically found in strains of the virus that affect humans, birds and swine. According to WHO, the current strain of swine virus has become pandemic and contagious, spreading from human to human. The virus strand has mutated and is increasingly becoming adept at spreading to humans, a fact that has compelled the WHO in raising the alert level to Phase 4. Three states in the Northeast, namely Mizoram, Sikkim and Assam, are seeing an outbreak of African Swine Fever (ASF) cases – a highly contagious viral disease affecting pigs. ASF continues to wreak havoc in Mizoram as the dreaded swine disease has currently affected 31 villages and localities across six districts. With 25 deaths on Sunday, as many as 1,983 pigs have so far been killed since the fresh outbreak of the swine disease in February. In August 2021, over 25,000 pigs died due ASF in five months since late March 2021 in Mizoram, causing a huge loss to pig farmers. In Assam the animal husbandry and veterinary department has culled 70 pigs infected with ASF under Biswanath district. In Tripura, over 225 pigs and piglets were culled by the Tripura Animal Resource Department (ARD)at a farm in Sehahijala district. In Meghalaya, At least 259 pigs have died in Meghalaya’s Ri-Bhoi district this year due to African Swine Fever (ASF), a senior official of the Veterinary and Animal Husbandry Department informed.Sikkim has recorded many cases of ASF in various locations in Gangtok, Pakyong, Mangan and Namchi Districts. Northeastern states consume about 70 per cent of the country’s total domestic pork production. If ASF has already been reported in Nagaland’s inner districts, there is no guarantee that it has not infected pigs in Dimapur district. In Nagaland, pig rearing is popular and many people built pig sty within the premises. This heightens threat of ASF spreading to humans. It is also necessary that health authorities including veterinarians also watch out for possible outbreak of Japanese encephalitis. Japanese encephalitis is a mosquito-borne disease caused by the Japanese encephalitis virus and spread primarily by the Culex mosquito. In both swine fever and JE, pigs are the intermediate hosts from where humans are infected. Transmission of ASF is very rapid and quickly engulfs the entire pig population. It is very difficult to differentiate classical swine fever from ASF since clinical symptoms overlap. With no cure or vaccine for ASF, isolation or culling are the only ways to curb the spread of this highly contagious disease which transmits through direct contact with sick animals or from anything contaminated - water, soil, feed, objects like shoes, vehicles and farm equipment, live or dead pigs or even pork products.

DailyDevotion His Ascension and Our Access It came to pass, while He blessed them, that He was parted from them and carried up into heaven. — Luke 24:51 We have no experiences in our lives that correspond to the events in our Lord’s life after the transfiguration. From that moment forward His life was altogether substitutionary. Up to the time of the transfiguration, He had exhibited the normal, perfect life of a man. But from the transfiguration forward— Gethsemane, the Cross, the resurrection— everything is unfamiliar to us. His Cross is the door by which every member of the human race can enter into the life of God; by His resurrection He has the right to give eternal life to anyone, and by His ascension our Lord entered heaven, keeping the door open for humanity. The transfiguration was completed on the Mount of Ascension. If Jesus had gone to heaven directly from the Mount of Transfiguration, He would have gone alone. He would have been nothing more to us than a glorious Figure. But He turned His back on the glory, and came down from the mountain to identify Himself with fallen humanity. The ascension is the complete fulfillment of the transfiguration. Our Lord returned to His original glory, but not simply as the Son of God— He returned to His father as the Son of Man as well. There is now freedom of access for anyone straight to the very throne of God because of the ascension of the Son of Man. As the Son of Man, Jesus Christ deliberately limited His omnipotence, omnipresence, and omniscience. But now they are His in absolute, full power. As the Son of Man, Jesus Christ now has all the power at the throne of God. From His ascension forward He is the King of kings and Lord of lords.

NAGALAND POST, DIMAPUR WEDNESDAY, MAY 18, 2022

Post-mortem

The Shepherd and the Pied Piper of Nagaland Politics

“A

politician thinks of the next election; a statesman of the next generation. A politician looks for the success of his party; a statesman for that of his country. The statesman wishes to steer, while the politician is satisfied to drift.”– James Freeman Clarke The recent political development in Nagaland was somehow on expected lines for some but to many the political transition came as a surprise. As a keen observer of activities of the General Assembly Election, NLA and Politicians; it appears that many MLAs are insecure about getting re-elected in the upcoming 2023 General Assembly Election based on their little to no performance, some are insecure financially while some, busy tailing around the ones who sponsored them. As such, many MLAs maybe under the impression that their decision was the right one taken under the given circumstances of the

B

present trend of electioneering. However, only time will tell, as the ball is now in the court of the electorates and 2023 General Assembly Election will be a litmus test of this political arrangement. Whereas, the present political equation carried out under the facade of vexed Naga political issue, is redundant as there already exists an opposition-less government arrangement in this regard. Wherefore, the present arrangement can either be a blessing in disguise for the NDPP or a blessing in disguise for the people of Nagaland, an opportunity–at last– accorded by themselves to get rid of all the ‘old wine in a new bottle’ politicians. Nagaland, today, is entangled in a cobweb of a system, that is suffering from everything that can go wrong with a democratic system. The present system works like a black hole; it sucks in anything that stands out and it allows none to spread its light.

Many a leader who once rallied against corruption, backdoor appointments etc. have mastered the art and became a paragon of corruptions and backdoor appointments. The system needs a holistic revamping with a ‘new wine in a new bottle’ set of statesman. It is time for young minds to take over the responsibility. Maybe the incumbent politicians inherited the current system from their predecessors but it does not in anyway exonerate them of their share of contribution nor does it mean, that the young Nagas should inherit the present system. It is unfortunate to see a bunch of septuagenarian and octogenarian politicians clinch on to public office without anything novel to contribute. Some leaders clinch on to public office in order to implement one’s unfinish vision, however, that is not the case in our State. Some of them clinch on to public office, in order to hide the skeletons in the closet.

During the time of election, candidates contest with the promises of the Stars, Moon and Earth, however, once they get elected and head for the NLA, they forget about their duties and responsibilities towards their constituency and the people of Nagaland and, instead of legislating laws, policies and governing the State–keeping in mind the welfare of the Citizenry– they keep themselves occupied with the politics of power, party politics and numbers game. Whatever the case maybe, party politics and politics of personal interest should never overshadow nor take precedence over the rights of the people of Nagaland. Nagaland is in urgent need of efficient legislators and the last thing we need is a politician in our midst. It is also a very disheartening state of affairs to see some Churches and Society give special treatment to such corrupt politicians and bureaucrats. Such practises intentionally or un-

intentionally validate their unscrupulous acts and that’s how the younger generation, having witnessed them held in such high regards, aspires to become like one of them. Our Society ridicules the honest political leaders and bureaucrats by tagging them as stupid, inexperience and incapable, and considers those notoriously venal politicians and bureaucrats as smart and clever, and shower them with praises and blessings wherever they go like a bunch of sycophants. How can our society progress and achieve an egalitarian state, when we live in such state of misconception and distorted reality. We have become a money oriented Society; money worshippers, to be precise. In every nook and corner of Nagaland, people of all ages, irrespective of tribe and gender, echoes concern about our sorry state of affairs and everyone seems to yearn for a change; though no one is willing to sacrifice for actualizing this dream, is

altogether a different matter. Writing about changing the system in Nagaland has remained a hashtag trend and reduced to a cliché. There is no point talking/writing about change in the system and Society, if you are going to become defensive, when it comes to you and your tribesmen or your elected leader(s). It is time we replace politicians by electing leaders with statesmanship quality. Thanks to the Shepherd and the Pied Piper duo of Nagaland politics for understanding the pulse of the people of Nagaland and doing the needful by rounding up the politicians under one banner. The road to slaughter house (2023 General Assembly Election) is not that far away. “Politics isn’t about big money or power games; it’s about the improvement of people’s lives.”–Paul Wellstone Tsali Sangtam, Dimapur, Nagaland, Member Core Committee, Young Nagas

‘Udaipur Nav Sankalp’ declaration of Congress

orn of the crucible of India’s freedom movement, the Indian National Congress stands tall on the legacy of immense resilience and sacrifice. The revolution to gain independence from British Rule was not only for self-rule and our own Constitution, but the elimination of all-round inequality, discrimination, bigotry, obscurantism, untouchability and parochialism. This epic struggle was led by crores of Indians under the leadership of the Indian National Congress. Steeped in the spirit of patriotism and sacrifice, the basis of the freedom movement, was ‘Justice for All’. During this period, innumerable Congressmen and Congresswomen endured the inhuman torture of jail and many were martyred. After a long struggle of sixty-two years, starting from the year 1885, India finally won freedom in 1947. This tradition of fighting for justice, the will to struggle and willingness to sacrifice, including martyrdom for the nation, paved the way for the unity, integrity and progress of India for the next seventy years after independence. The Indian National Congress and its leadership have always fought steadfastly against all those challenging India’s pluralistic and inclusive principles, especially those who took the path of violence and extremism, fundamentalism and naxalism. Mahatma Gandhi, Indira Gandhi, Rajiv Gandhi, and countless others laid down their lives to protect Indian values. India got political independence in 1947, but along with it inherited innumerable challenges in the form of a highly underdeveloped country. There was neither enough food grains nor industries. There were hardly any health facilities, educational institutions, irrigation, means of transport and communication, almost no electricity generation and inadequate arrangements for the security of the country. To free the country from the feudal tyranny of hundreds of princely states was a huge responsibility in itself. Through sheer determination, the leadership of the Indian National Congress converted all of these challenges into opportunities and laid the foundation of a strong, peaceful, inclusive and progressive India. The first Prime Minister of India, Jawaharlal Nehru, along with Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel and many worthy colleagues,

not only united the country, but through the Planning Commission and Five Year Plans laid the foundations for food grain production, dams, power stations, nuclear power, roads, rail, communication, security, educational institutions, research institutes, factories and infrastructure. Nehru established Public Sector Undertakings (PSUs), IITs, IIMs, universities, large irrigation dams and projects, large steel factories, space projects, Atomic Energy Commission, DRDO, and called them the temples of modern India. In the 1960s and 1970s, the Indian National Congress initiated the Green Revolution and made India selfsufficient in food. Through bank nationalisation, the Congress opened the doors of the banking system to the common people. The forces challenging the sovereignty of India were made to bite the dust and the Congress played a decisive role in the formation of Bangladesh. In the 1980s and the early 1990s, the Congress once again laid the foundation of the 21st century India. On the one hand, the telecom revolution took wings, and on the other hand, power was decentralised to the panchayats and urban local bodies by giving them Constitutional status. The computer and IT revolution played a very important role in the making of modern India, the profound impact of which is being seen even today. When non-Congress governments had severely mishandled the economy to such an extent that India had to pledge its sovereign gold, it is the Congress that once more gave a new direction to India’s progress through economic liberalization and reaped the benefits of globalization. The tenure of the Indian National Congress-led government from 2004 to 2014 will forever be remembered for establishing the milestones of inclusive development, unprecedented economic growth, and empowerment of every citizen through the rights-based approach. The courageous sacrifice of Sonia Gandhi to give up power and the economic expertise of Manmohan Singh took the country to new heights. The collective leadership and vision of Sonia Gandhi, Manmohan Singh and Rahul Gandhi shaped an inclusive and empowered India, in which every citizen has the ‘Right to information’ for transparency and accountability in governance, ‘Right to work’ un-

der MGNREGA, ‘Right to food’, ‘Right to education’, ‘Right to forests’ for Adivasis and forest-dwellers, and ‘Right to fair compensation and transparency in land acquisition’ for farmers. On the one hand, India crossed double-digit growth for the first time and on the other hand, 14 crore people were lifted above the poverty line along with the emergence of a large and progressive middle-class. Aspirations of the people rose and many touched new heights of progress. There was social harmony all around, there was peace and brotherhood, there was progress, and also a new ambition to keep moving forward. Many conspiratorial forces came together to unleash a vicious cycle of propaganda to acquire power and in the process derailed the forward march of India on the path of inclusive development, empowerment and social harmony. But in the last eight years, the aspirations and expectations for the country’s success, progress and social harmony, have been deliberately drowned in doom, gloom and darkness. In the name of demonetisation, jobs and trade were dealt a body blow. A high-handed and arbitrary GST brought small and medium industries to the brink of disaster. With the announcement of an unplanned nation-wide lockdown, lakhs of Indians were forced to abandon their homes and livelihoods in the cities, and walk hundreds and thousands of kilometres to their villages, without any income and staring at an uncertain future. The government’s abysmal failure in handling the Covid-19 pandemic led to lakhs of avoidable deaths. The heights of arrogance of the rulers became even more evident when they turned a blind eye to the terrible sight of corpses littering the banks of Ganga. Not only this, in the last eight years, the youth of the country are bearing the brunt of intolerable levels of unemployment. The fire of inflation has scorched every person and family. Buying a gas cylinder for the home is now out of reach. The skyrocketing prices of petrol, diesel, flour, edible oil, pulses, vegetables and daily essentials have made life difficult for most Indians. Unemployment and inflation have now become a curse for the citizens of the country. No section of the society has remained untouched by the apathy of the ruling government. When lakhs of

farmers took to the streets against the three black farm laws, the government brutally beat them up, put nails and thorns in their path and even declared them ‘terrorists’. India meanwhile is passing through a period of severe economic slowdown. Entire industries and businesses have collapsed but the government remains unconcerned. For the first time in seventy-five years, the country’s rupee has tumbled to ₹77.50 against a dollar. Every single public asset of the country built over the last seventy years is being sold arbitrarily by the BJP government. It seems that the government has put up a board that says ‘India for sale’. The indiscriminate privatization of public assets, which is our national wealth built over 70 years is dangerous in itself. This becomes even more serious when the BJP government ill-advisedly sells public sector companies at throwaway prices to their favourite crony capitalist friends. Not only is reservation for Dalits, Adivasis, and backward classes being finished, but efforts are being made to establish the monopoly of a few people on the Indian economy. To cover up its unforgivable failures, the BJP government is creating an atmosphere of communal disharmony in the country. Minorities, Dalits and the poor are being targeted. The BJP’s hunger for power is sowing the seeds of hatred on the basis of religion and caste. India’s pluralism, brotherhood and inclusive values are being attacked. There is a malicious conspiracy to divide India on the basis of caste, faith, food, dress, language, and region. The BJP’s relentless efforts to implement its ideological agenda of fundamentalism has pushed India’s economy to the margins. This is a serious alarm bell for the present and future of the country. In view of these extraordinary circumstances and challenges, the Indian National Congress has organized the “Nav Sankalp Chintan Shivir”. In the prevailing divisive environment, the BJP keeping the people ensnared in a web of religious and caste division to reap political benefit is a matter of deep concern. The party formed six groups to discuss and deliberate on six different issues. In every group, the delegates engaged in a frank and free-wheeling discussion, and many impactful ideas, suggestions and action points emerged. The disappointing results of

the recently held Assembly elections were acknowledged and analysed. There was an extensive brainstorming on the shortcomings of the organization and proposals to bring necessary reforms to strengthen the party’s connect at the grassroots. Deficiencies were deliberated upon with an open mind, divergent views were discussed, all perspectives on ideology and policy were minutely analysed and concrete suggestions for improvements were made. All the delegates of the Nav Sankalp Shivir wholeheartedly participated in this introspection. After this intensive exercise, the Indian National Congress has emerged with a new resolve, reaffirming its commitment to walk on the path of Indian nationalism and nation-building. On display was a commitment to live up to its legacy, to strive for ‘Justice for All’ under all circumstances, and to resolutely tackle the present challenges faced by the party. The deliberations held by the six groups culminated into some important conclusions. “Organization” and the workers at the grassroots are the real strength of the Indian National Congress. Extensive deliberations were held on the pivotal role of the party organisation, its functioning and performance. The summary of the brainstorming is as follows. All the vacant positions at the Block, District, State and National level will be filled in the next 90 to 180 days and accountability fixed. In order to make the

organization more effective, apart from the Block Congress Committees, Mandal Congress Committees will be constituted as well. Three new depar tments of the party will be created at the national level: i) Public Insight Department, responsible for gathering public feedback on different issues and evaluating policies in a scientific manner, to serve as an input to the party leadership. ii) National Training Institute, to train the party leaders and the workers on the policies, ideology and vision of the party, policies of the government, and other burning issues. The training institute can start at the Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Development Studies located in Kerala. iii) A I C C E l e c t i o n Management Department, to ensure preparedness well in advance for every election in an effective manner to achieve desired results. The General Secretary (Organization) is to assess the performance of the office bearers of All India Congress Committee, Pradesh Congress Committees and District Congress Committees. This will help in promoting or removing office bearers based on their performance. (To be concluded...) Exactly 80 years ago, in the year 1942, Mahatma Gandhi gave a call to the nation, “Quit India” i.e. “Bharat Chodo”! In the year, 2022, our call to the nation is “Unite India” i.e. “Bharat Jodo”! This is Udaipur’s Nav Sankalp!

Voters can change our deficit and unemployment Sir,

Be honest, when it comes to end their terms, they often start to care for the people, start to fight for the people and search of solution only at the end of five years, during their fresh power they will become deaf and blind. Nagas, take example from neighbor state Assam, providing enough facilities to the students and recently solve unemployment. But here in Nagaland, pending of salary even for employee, deficit year by year, unemployment youth increases, no people voice. Time to change our candidate who doesn’t stand for the people, time to remove corrupted leaders, time to change our leader who are blind and deaf to see our state situation, we can form govt ,we can dismiss govt with our vote, money is very important but let’s not accept from blind folded, it will regret generation to generation. If other states can do for the people then why not in Nagaland? M. Bonglang (Ngonyen), Chakhesang Walford colony Dimapur, mbonglangphom1234@gmail.com

Rajnath launches 2 indigenously built warships MUMBAI, MAY 17 (PTI): Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Tuesday launched two indigenously built warships ‘Surat’ and ‘Udaygiri’ at the Mazagon Docks in Mumbai, and said this will “add might” to the Navy’s arsenal and represent India’s strategic strength before the world. This is the first time that two indigenously built warships have been launched concurrently, the Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Ltd (MDL) said. The ‘Surat’ and ‘Udaygiri’ warships have been designed in-house by the Directorate of Naval Design (DND) and built at the Mumbai-based MDL, a premier ship and submarine building defence public sector undertaking. The launch of a ship marks the commencement of the next phase involving extensive outfitting activities by the shipyards readying these vessels for delivery. At the event, Singh said building of these two warships leaves no doubt that in the coming days, India will not only cater to its needs in the arena of shipbuilding, but will also take care of the requirements of others. “The two warships will add might to the Indian Navy’s arsenal and represent to the world India’s strategic

Frontline warship of Indian Navy ‘Udaygiri’, a Project 17A Frigate, during its launch at Mazgaon Docks Limited. (PTI) strength as well as the power of self-reliance,” he said. The defence minister further said the indigenous aircraft carrier ‘Vikrant’ is a major milestone in the Navy’s path of “Aatmanirbharta” (self-reliance), and expressed hope that this will increase the country’s reach from the Indian Ocean to the Pacific and the Atlantic Ocean. “The commissioning of Vikrant will be a golden moment in India’s defence history,” he said. As per the Navy, ‘Surat’ is the fourth ship of Project 15B Destroyers, which heralds a significant makeover of the P15A (Kolkata Class) destroyers, and is named after the commercial capital of Gujarat and also the second largest commer-

cial hub of western India after Mumbai. The Project 15B class of ships is the Navy’s next generation stealth guided missile destroyers being built at the MDL. ‘Udaygiri’, named after a mountain range in Andhra Pradesh, is the third ship of Project 17A Frigates. P17A Frigates are warships that are a follow-on class of the P17 (Shivalik Class) Frigates with improved stealth features, advanced weapons, sensors and platform management systems, the Navy said. The new warship is the reincarnation of the erstwhile ‘Udaygiri’, the Leander Class ASW Frigate, which saw numerous challenging operations in its illustrious service to the country, spanning over three de-

cades from February 1976 to August 2007, it said. Seven P17A Frigates are under various stages of construction at the MDL and Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers (GRSE), the Navy said. “It gives me immense pleasure to be present amongst all of you, at the launching ceremony of INS ‘Surat’ and INS ‘Udaygiri’. In such a historical land, which has been the karmabhoomi of heroes like Veer Shivaji, Sambhaji and Kanhoji, the launch of these warships becomes even more important,” Singh said. Noting that Gujarat’s Surat city is famous for diamonds, Singh said in the coming days, the ‘Surat’ warship will prove to be a ‘diamond’ for the Indian Navy. He said these warships are an embodiment of the government’s unwavering commitment to enhance the country’s maritime capability, with focus on achieving self-reliance, at a time when the world is witnessing disruption in global supply chain due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the Russia-Ukraine conflict. “The INS Udaygiri and INS Surat are shining examples of India’s growing indigenous capability. The warships will be among the most technologically ad-

vanced missile carriers in the world that will cater to the present as well as future requirements,” he said. Singh said the IndoPacific region is important for the economy of the whole world. “India is a responsible maritime stakeholder in the region. We support consensus-based principles and peaceful, open, rule-based and stable maritime order. Being an important country in this region, it is the primary objective of our Navy to keep the Indo-Pacific open, safe and secure,” he said. If a country wants to safeguard its national interests, it should project its military prowess in areas far beyond the mainland. If a country has aspirations to become a regional or global power, it is necessary to develop a strong naval force, Singh said. “The government is making all efforts in this direction. We want to make a strong, secure and prosperous India, which is recognised as a global power,” Singh said. Navy chief Admiral S Hari Kumar said both the warships - Surat and Udaygiri - will become versatile and powerful tools to move towards this endeavour and support a larger national vision.

Narasimha issued the notice on a plea filed by the Committee of Management Anjuman Intezamia Masajid Varanasi, against the Allahabad High Court’s April order, which dismissed a petition challenging a Varanasi court’s order to appoint an advocate as a Court Commissioner to inspect the Gyanvapi Masjid complex. The top court, which is likely to take up the matter for further hearing later this week, said that the Shivling found inside the mosque during the survey needs to be protected, but the restrictions on Muslims entering the mosque to offer namaz is not correct. It, however, did not entertain a plea for stay of proceedings before the trial court, which was scheduled to receive the Court Commissioner’s survey report. Senior advocate Huzefa Ahmadi, representing the

The Gyanvapi mosque after its survey by a commission, in Varanasi, Tuesday. (PTI) petitioner, contended that the trial court was not correct in ordering sealing of ‘wuzukhana’ - a place for

washing hands, feet, and face before offering prayers - where the ‘Shivling’ has been purportedly found.

Court removes Ajay Mishra as Advocate Commissioner

The Varanasi court, hearing the Gyanvapi mosque survey matter, on Tuesday removed Ajay Mishra from the post of Advocate Commissioner, reportedly for leaking information about the video survey to the media. Vishal Singh has been elevated to the post of Advocate Commissioner. Meanwhile, the court has granted two days’ time to the advocate commissioner to file the report on the video survey. In a related development, the Hindu petitioners have filed a new petition in a Varanasi court, seeking demolition of a wall located between the ‘Nandi’ statue and the ‘Shivling’ that they claim to have found during the video survey. The petitioners said that a wall and debris surrounding the ‘shivling’ should be demolished and a fresh survey should be held to verify the facts. The wall is located on the eastern side of the mosque. The court has admitted the petition for hearing.

Haridwar Sansad case: Accused Gujarat ATS nabs granted 3-months interim bail 4 in 1993 Mumbai NEW DELHI, MAY 17 (PTI): The Supreme Court on Tuesday granted three months of interim bail to Jitendra Narayan Tyagi on medical grounds in connection with the Haridwar Dharma Sansad case involving alleged inflammatory speeches made against Muslims. A bench comprising Justices Ajay Rastogi and Vikram Nath directed Tyagi, formerly known as Wasim Rizvi, to give an undertaking that he would not indulge in hate speech and not give any statement on electronic or digital, or social media. Tyagi had approached the top court after the Uttarakhand High Court dismissed his bail plea in March this year. The case against him and others had been lodged on the complaint of Nadeem Ali, a resident of Jwalapur Haridwar at Haridwar Kotwali on January 2, 2022. He had alleged in his complaint that Dharma Sansad or religious Parliament was organised in Haridwar by Hindu sages from December 17 to 19 last

year and in the garb of this event, the participants were instigated to wage a war against Muslims. Objectionable words were used against the holy Quran and Prophet Mohammad, Ali had said in his complaint, adding these provocative statements had later gone viral on social media. These videos were circulated by Wasim Rizvi alias Jitendra Narayan Tyagi, Yati Narsinghanand, and others, he had alleged. The FIR also alleged that an attempt was made by Prabodhanand Giri to spread violence against the people living in Haridwar’s mosques. On Nadeem Ali’s complaint, Narsindhanand Giri, Sagar Sindhu Maharaj, Dharamdas Maharaj, Parmanand Maharaj, Sadhvi Annapurna, Swami Anand Swaroop, Aswani Upadhyay, Suresh Chavan along with Swami Prabodhanand Giri, Jitendra Narayan were booked under Sections 153A, 295 and other relevant sections of the IPC for allegedly delivering hate speeches in the name of religion at the conclave.

serial blasts case

AHMEDABAD, MAY 17 (PTI): The Gujarat AntiTerrorist Squad (ATS) has arrested four persons wanted in the 1993 Mumbai serial blasts case, who were on the run for 29 years, officials said on Tuesday. The four accused have been identified as Abu Bakar, Saiyad Qureshi, Mohammad Shoeb Qureshi and Mohammad Yusuf Ismail, all residents of Mumbai, they said. They were nabbed from Sardarnagar area of Ahmedabad on May 12, following a specific tip-off on their whereabouts, Additional Director General of Police Amit Vishwakarma told reporters. “To hide their real identity, they had prepared passports using forged documents. A preliminary probe established that these four are wanted in the 1993 Mumbai serial blast case,” he said. “As requested by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), which is probing the serial blasts case, the Interpol had also issued a Red Corner Notice against them,” the official said.

Sushil Kumar Modi har have realised that it is better for them to catch the bus rather than missing it. The idea would be to at least claim before the people of the state that they were not against the pro-

cess, a political expert said. “The saffron party never opposed caste-based census in Bihar or in any other state. When the all-party delegation met with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, a senior state minister from BJP quota Janak Ram was a part of it. Similarly, when the all-party delegation of Jharkhand went to Delhi to meet PM Modi on the same issue, our leader of opposition in Jharkhand Deepak Prakash also participated. “Had we been against

it, we would not have been a part of the delegation. These delegations put a demand before PM Modi that the Centre would conduct a caste-based census in the country. The Centre had said that it is not possible for it to conduct caste census in the country but tha state governments are independent to conduct the same in their respective states,” Modi had said. “The caste-based census was passed twice in the Bihar Legislative Assembly

and Bihar Legislative Council and BJP supported it all along,” Modi said. “Even we were not against the socioeconomic census passed in Parliament in 2010. On that occasion, Gopinath Munde and Hukumdev Prasad Yadav during their speech in the House had supported it. Even when caste-based census was held in Karnataka (Sarva Kukumb Surve in Karnataka) and Telangana (2015), BJP did not oppose it,” Modi said.

NEW DELHI, MAY 17 (PTI): The Congress on Tuesday accused the BJP of conspiring to “break” India by dividing people on religious lines and said the grand old party will undertake ‘yatras’ across the country to unite the people. The party has given the “Bharat jodo” slogan to unite India and a 75-km yatra will be undertaken after August 9 during the 75th year of India’s Independence, senior spokesperson Ajay Maken told reporters here, after AICC general secretaries and in-charges held a meeting to give shape to the recommendations of the just-concluded three-day ‘Chintan Shivir’ at Udaipur in Rajasthan. He said the ‘Bharat Jodo’ is not a unification of land masses of India but is about uniting the people of India. Congress leader Rahul Gandhi also made a call to people to unite India and defeat BJP’s politics of hatred. “People’s issues -- earnings, inflation; BJP’s issues

However, he claimed that the complainants did not have any details on misuse of Rs 4.79 crore and only levelled allegations that were unverifiable. policy reviews and September action will depend on the direction of the war and its impact on the commodity prices. Earlier in the day, the agency, in a report, said its business activity monitor stood at 115.7 in April, which is the second highest in 13 months and low base exaggerated growth to 16.1 per cent. The index stood at 123.7 in March compared to 107.8 in February. Accordingly, he said it was ensured that seven out of 14 members in the VC were from the complainants’ side, besides ensuring equal representation for the complainants so that they could check the work that was being carried out by the VC/VDB. Thavaseelan claimed that the entire villagers of Longzang had appreciated and thanked the Mon district administration for ensuring equal representation for them in VC. In October 2021, the Rural Development Department had written a letter requesting for release of funds to Longzang village as it was affecting the performance of the entire block and would lead to a situation where funds for other villages would not be released or will be delayed for a very long time. Citing rising inflation worries, she said the consumer price index is expected to average at 6.3-6.5 per cent this fiscal. The biggest upside risks to inflation and growth come from the runaway fuel prices and the impact of the war in Ukraine. If the war does not de-escalate in the near term, the impact will be much farther than anticipated, she said. This is also the primary reason for maintaining low GDP growth forecast at 7.2 per cent for the full year and higher one on a low base effect. On the interest rate front, Nayar said the central bank is expected to hike rates by 25 basis points each in the June and August

KOHIMA/DIMAPUR, MAY 17 (NPN): Deputy commissioner (DC) Mon Thavaseelan K has denied the claim made by Longzang villagers in a press release that they had met on May 3 with a plea not to release MGNREGA funds. Clarifying that none had met him that day with the request, he told Nagaland Post that the lie was tantamount to defamation and that he had warned them that he could file a case against them for this. On the allegation that no action was taken because politics was involved, the DC claimed that upon receiving a letter from the complainants that funds were misused, he had immediately stopped all fund release that were routed through Village Council (VC) and Village Development Board (VDB) through an order passed in February 2021. CAIRO, MAY 17 (AP): An attempt by one of Libya’s rival prime ministers to seat his government in the capital of Tripoli triggered clashes Tuesday between competing militias, forcing the newly appointed premier to leave the city. The development underscored the fragility of the situation in the warwracked country while the two rival prime ministers traded accusations for the escalation. Prime Minister Fathi Bashagha’s office said he had arrived in Tripoli with a number of Cabinet ministers early Tuesday — three months after his appointment to lead an interim government. The move was likely to fuel more tensions between Libya’s rival administrations and in the morning, local media reported clashes between different militias and rival forces in central Tripoli and elsewhere in the city. The Tripoli-based government of embattled Prime Minister Abdul Hamid Dbeibah slammed his rival, describing Tuesday’s

SEOUL, MAY 17 ( AGENCIES): North Korea stands on the brink of a Covid-19 catastrophe unless swift action is taken to provide vaccines and drug treatments, experts have said, as the number of people reported to have fallen ill rose to almost 1.5 million, reports The Guardian. The isolated country reported another big rise in new cases of what it continues to refer to as “fever” on Tuesday, days after it admitted it had identified Covid-19 infections for the first time since the start of the global pandemic. It recorded 269,510 additional cases and six more deaths, bringing the total number killed to 56 since late last month. About 1.48 million people have become ill with the virus since the first case was reported last Thursday and at least 663,910 people were in quarantine, according to official figures. The outbreak is almost certainly greater than the official tally, given a lack of tests and resources to monitor and treat the sick. A significant Covid-19 outbreak could unleash a humanitarian crisis in North Korea, where the economy has been battered by the pandemic-enforced closure of its border with China – its main trading partner – natural disasters, and years of international sanctions imposed in response to ballistic missile tests. The regime is not thought to have vaccinated any of its population and does not have access to antiviral drugs that have been used to treat Covid-19 in other countries. Its hospitals have few intensive-care resources to treat severe cases, and widespread malnourishment has made the population of 26 million more susceptible to serious illness. “It looks really bad,” said Owen Miller, a lecturer in Korean studies at the School of Oriental and African Studies, London University. “They are facing the rampant spread of Omicron without protection from vaccines, without much – if any – immunity in the population and without access to most of the drugs that have been used to treat Covid elsewhere.”

STOCKHOLM, MAY 17 (AP): Sweden on Tuesday signed a formal request to join NATO, a day after the country announced it would seek membership in the 30-member military alliance. In neighbouring Finland, lawmakers are expected later in the day to formally endorse Finnish leaders’ decision also to join. The moves by the two Nordic countries, ending Sweden’s more than 200 years of military nonalignment and Finland’s nonalignment after World War II, have provoked the ire of the Kremlin. While most NATO members are keen to welcome the two countries as quickly as possible, Turkey has potentially complicated their accession by saying it cannot allow them to become members because of their perceived inaction against exiled Kurdish militants. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Monday doubled down on comments last week indicating that the two Nordic countries´ path to NATO would be anything but smooth. All 30 current NATO countries must agree to open the door to new members. He accused the two Nordic countries of refusing to extradite “terrorists” wanted by his country. A crippling shortage of foreign reserves has led to long queues for fuel, cooking gas and other essentials while power cuts and soaring food prices heaped misery on the people. The economic uncertainty also triggered a political crisis in Sri Lanka and a demand for the resignation of the powerful Rajapaksas. President Gotabaya Rajapaksa sacked his Cabinet and appointed a younger Cabinet as a response to the demand for his resignation. A continuous protest opposite his secretariat has now gone on for well over a month. On May 9, Gotabaya Rajapaksa’s elder brother Mahinda Rajapaksa resigned as the prime minister to make way for the president to appoint an interim all political party government. Wickremesinghe was appointed the country’s new prime minister on Thursday.

ders. The Speaker then ordered a vote on the question of suspending the standing orders. The government won the vote and forced the adjournment motion moved on the violence suffered by the ruling party politicians since May 9. The police on Monday said that some 78 ruling party politicians had suffered damage to properties. The Opposition said the motion of displeasure could be moved on Friday. Sri Lanka is witnessing an unprecedented economic crisis. The Rajapaksa government had taken some arbitrary decisions like banning chemical fertiliser imports in favour of organic farming and resisting turning to the International Monetary Fund which led to the country’s worst economic crisis since its independence from Britain in 1948.

COLOMBO, MAY 17 (PTI): A no-confidence motion tabled by the Opposition against Sri Lankan President Gotabaya Rajapaksa was defeated in Parliament on Tuesday, in a comfortable win for the embattled President amidst nationwide protests demanding his resignation due to the country’s worstever economic crisis. 7 Drinks for Lowering Blood Pressure

hen blood pressure goes unchecked, it can lead to complications such as heart disease and stroke. One of your first lines of defense against high blood pressure (hypertension) is your diet. Adopting a blood pressure-friendly diet may help keep your blood pressure within a healthy range without the side effects caused by medications. In addition to certain foods that may help lower your blood pressure, some types of drinks may also be helpful. In this article, we’ll take a deeper dive into 7 different types of drinks that may help lower your blood pressure. 1. Tomato juice Growing evidence suggests that drinking one glass of tomato juice per day may promote heart health. In a 2019 studyTrusted Source, Japanese researchers evaluated the effects of drinking an average of one cup of tomato juice per day among participants with risk factors for heart disease. They concluded that tomato juice improved both systolic and diastolic blood pressure, as well as LDL cholesterol. Other recent studies have reported similar results among people with stage 1 hypertension and pregnant women. To avoid unnecessary

sodium, which can have the opposite effect on blood pressure, make sure to buy unsalted tomato juice. 2. Beet juice Not only do these colorful, low-calorie vegetables contain a host of health-promoting vitamins, minerals, and plant compounds, but they may also help lower blood pressure. A randomized pilot study from 2016Trusted Source found that the juice of both raw and cooked beets improved blood pressure. However, raw beet juice had a greater impact on blood pressure. Beets are rich in dietary nitrates, a compound known to have blood pressure-lowering effects. In a 2017 reviewTrusted Source, researchers found that these benefits were greater than the effects of nitrates alone. In other words, other heart-friendly compounds are likely at play as well. Try this simple beetroot juice recipe to lower blood pressure. 3. Prune juice Prune juice has long been known to help alleviate constipation. But one of prune juice’s lesser-known health benefits is that it also lowers blood pressure. This effect was reported in a 2010 studyTrusted Source. Researchers compared three groups: one group ate three prunes per day, a second group ate six

prunes per day, and a third group didn’t eat any prunes. The researchers reported a significant reduction in blood pressure among people who ate a single dose of three prunes per day. People who ate six prunes per day experienced an additional reduction in systolic blood pressure. Moreover, both threeand six-prune doses were found to also lower LDL cholesterol. To take advantage of these effects, drink a glass of 100-percent prune juice or make your own by blending soaked prunes. 4. Pomegranate juice Not only are pomegranates rich in nutrients such as folate and vitamin C, they also boast potent anti-inflammatory effects. It may come as no surprise, then, that pomegranate juice can contribute to a hearthealthy diet. A 2016 literature review of eight randomized, controlled trials found that

consuming pomegranate juice may help lower both systolic and diastolic blood pressure. The effects on systolic blood pressure were independent of how long participants consumed pomegranate juice for and how much. The researchers recommend a dose of at least 240 milliliters to reduce diastolic blood pressure. If you decide to add pomegranate juice to your diet, make sure it’s 100-percent juice with no added sugar. 5. Berry juice Like pomegranates, berries — especially blueberries — are known for their antioxidant properties. However, less is known about their heart benefits. A 2020 review reported that drinking cranberry or cherry juice may improve blood pressure. Another reviewTrusted Source published in Nature in 2016 found that consuming berries lowered both

systolic blood pressure and LDL cholesterol. In both cases, the researchers concluded that berries likely have cardiovascular benefits, but more research needs to be done to clarify their role in preventing and controlling heart disease. If you opt for storebought berry juice, make sure it doesn’t contain any added sugar. 6. Skim milk Low-fat dairy products such as skim milk and yogurt are a key component of Dietary Strategies to Stop Hypertension, a sciencebased set of recommendations for preventing and treating high blood pressure. In a 2011 literature review involving 45,000 adults, researchers examined the intake of low- and high-fat dairy products and how each affected blood pressure. They concluded that the consumption of low-fat milk was associated with a lower risk of high blood pressure. Try to get two to three servings of low-fat milk products per day. You can drink a glass with your meals, or add it to cereal or a smoothie. Steamed skim milk also makes a great addition to coffee. 7. Tea When it comes to blood pressure, not all teas are created equal. A 2014 literature reviewTrusted

Source of randomized controlled trials compared the effects of black and green tea consumption on blood pressure. The researchers reported that long-term intake of both types of tea lowered both systolic and diastolic blood pressure. However, the reduction in blood pressure was more significant for green tea. What about coffee and alcohol? Both coffee and alcohol can have varied effects on blood pressure. Coffee The effect of coffee on blood pressure has been a longstanding source of controversy in the scientific community. Caffeine appears to create a temporary spike in

blood pressure. But this effect may be less pronounced among regular coffee drinkers. Some past research has suggested that long-term coffee consumption is associated with an increased risk of hypertension. But according to a 2017 literature review of 34 studies, moderate coffee consumption is safe, and perhaps even beneficial for both healthy people and those with high blood pressure. If you’ve been diagnosed with hypertension, you probably don’t need to cut out coffee. With that said, it might not be the best time to start drinking coffee if you don’t already. Alcohol As with coffee, alco-

hol’s effect on blood pressure is complicated. Moderate alcohol consumption — that’s one drink per day for women and two per day for men — was once thought to lower blood pressure. But recent research suggests that even moderate drinking may poses risks to heart health. In addition, blood pressure medications and alcohol don’t mix. When it comes to alcohol consumption, the recommendation likely isn’t the same for everyone. If you have high blood pressure, talk to your doctor to find out what’s considered a safe level of alcohol consumption for you. Medically reviewed by Jenneh Rishe

Tamim soon brought up his 32nd Test half-century and continued to dominate the Sri Lankan bowlers. Mahmudul too followed suit and completed his second Test fifty. The Lankans were poor in the field, failing to grab the chances that came their way. Both openers

Pacer Vishwa Fernando following a blow on his helmet off Shoriful Islam’s short delivery in the afternoon session of Day 2, continued to bowl in the morning session of Day 3 but was later ruled out of the Test and medium-pacer Kasun Rajitha came in as a concussion substitute for him. The afternoon session went in Sri Lanka’s favour

as they managed to make a comeback by scalping three wickets in the session. First to depart was Mahmudul, who was undone by a short delivery from Asitha Fernando and edged it to the wicketkeeper for 58. Tamim, on the other hand, soon brought up his 10th Test ton. Tamim and Mushfiqur made sure Bangladesh did not lose any more wickets as they went for Tea at 220/3. Post tea-break, it was all about rebuilding the innings for Bangladesh. After batting through the opening and the afternoon sessions, Tamim struggled because of the heat and had to retire hurt. With three wickets down and their top batter in the pavilion, the job of stabilising the Bangladesh innings fell on Mushfiqur and Liton Das. Bangladesh finally finished their day on 318/3, with both Liton and Musfiqur solid at the crease. Brief scores: Sri Lanka 397 lead Bangladesh 318/3 (Tamim Iqbal 133 retd hurt, Liton Das 54 not out; Kasun Rajitha 2-17) by 79 runs.

State Assam. The 22 -year-old winger have also played for Minerva Punjab and Kerela Blasters. He is the youngest footballer in Indian history to have made it into the senior category in January 2017 when he was selected to be part of team Chennaiyin FC. Bodo Jr is currently part of U-19 India team and he had also previously captained the U-17 na-

tional team. Although Wolves XI, a team made up of young players all under- 19, could not score any goal against their mighty opponent, they displayed great skill and prowess in the field. Earlier, A-Yhome defeated United Brothers FC 6-1 and secured a slot in the next round. Johnson scored three goals in the 61st, 77th and 86th minutes and became the second player to score

a hat-trick in the ongoing cup. Fellow teammates Vilhoubeituo, Ringham Jigdung and Punuru each contributed a goal in the 9th, 29th and 47th minutes. Mhalezotuo Dzüvichü scored the lone goal for United Brothers. Nadal ready for Roland Garros despite injury issues MADRID, MAY 17 (REUTERS): Rafael Nadal has moved to ease concerns about his injury problems ahead of the French Open, posting a picture of himself training in full flow at his academy in Mallorca with the caption: “See you on Wednesday, Paris.” The 13-time Roland Garros champion had said last week that daily training was a challenge and he would take a doctor with him to Paris after a chronic foot injury flared up during his defeat by Denis Shapovalov at the Italian Open. Nadal, 35, who only recently returned from a stress fracture in the ribs, struggled towards the end of his match against the Canadian as he went down 1-6 7-5 6-2 in the last-16. But the world number five looks poised to launch another bid for a Grand Slam title at his favourite hunting ground, having won his 21st major at the Australian Open earlier this year. That victory followed a difficult 2021 during which he missed Wimbledon, the Tokyo Olympics and the U.S. Open.

Naga wrestlers and NWA officials with Rev. Dr. Kevekhalo Lasuh.

DIMAPUR, MAY 17 (NPN): Four Naga wrestlers on Tuesday have left for Osh, Kyrgyzstan to compete in the United World Wrestling (UWW) Asian Belt Wrestling & Kazakh Kuresi Championship 2022 from May 21 to 23. The wrestlers Venuzo Dawhuo, Keduovilie Zumu, Er.Mhasilhusie

Nagi and Nlumrai Hegwang are among the nine wrestlers of Team India for the championship. They will be accompanied by Nagaland Wrestling Association (NWA) president Dr. Hiabe Zeliang and general secretary Vilekho Bio as team coaches and NWA treasurer Vezuhu Keyho as team manager. NWA advisor Neivikuo-

lie Nicholas Khatsu and Khrievotuo Sekhose are also part of the team, who will be attending referee clinic and training scheduled for May 20 and 21. Earlier, Chakhesang Baptist Church Kohima senior pastor Rev. Dr. Kevekhalo Lasuh invoked God’s blessing for the team in a brief programme before their departure.

NEW DELHI, MAY 17 (PTI): In an unprecedented incident, Services’ wrestler Satender Malik launched a physical assault on referee Jagbir Singh after losing the 125kg final during the Commonwealth Games trials, prompting the national federation to impose a life ban on him, here on Tuesday. The Air Force wrestler was leading 3-0 with just a 18 seconds left in the deciding bout when Mohit effected a ‘take-down’ move and also pushed Satender out of the mat for another point. However, referee Virender Malik did not award two points to Mohit for the ‘takedown’ move and gave only one point for the pushout. The decision upset Mohit, who requested for a challenge. Satyadev Malik, the jury for the bout, excused himself from the decision for the sake of impartiality, since he belonged to the Mokhra village from where Satender also comes. Senior referee Jagbir Singh was requested to

Newcastle dent Arsenal’s top four hopes L O N D O N , M AY 1 7 (AGENCIES): Arsenal’s hopes of finishing in the Premier League top four were dealt a huge blow as they were well beaten by Newcastle at St James’ Park. Mikel Arteta’s side needed a win to move above Tottenham into fourth and put them in the driving seat to secure a Champions League spot heading into the final weekend of the season. But they were second best throughout and fell behind early in the second half when Ben White turned the ball into his own net under pressure from Callum Wilson, who was making his first start since 27 December. Bruno Guimaraes, who has become a cult hero since joining Newcastle at the start of this year, then rounded off the impressive win when he drove into the net as Arsenal struggled to clear. Arsenal offered next to nothing, with Martin Dubravka only really tested once, with a 25-yard Mohamed Elneny shot in the second half. Indeed, Newcastle could have won by more with Wilson coming so close to capping a dream return from injury with a stunning long-range effort that

dropped just wide of the goal. The result, which also confirmed Chelsea’s finish in the top four, means Arsenal must beat Everton in their final game of the season on Sunday (16:00 BST) and hope Tottenham lose at relegated Norwich. Newcastle, meanwhile, round off a season that provides encouragement for the future with a trip to Burnley. Arsenal needed a big performance if they were to give their fans hope of finishing in the top four, particuarly after they were well beaten by their fierce rivals

Tottenham in last Thursday’s north London derby. Unfortunately, Arteta’s side wilted when it mattered most as they were outplayed by Newcastle. The Gunners were poor throughout the first half as they repeatedly gave the ball away and were having to repel a stream of Newcastle attacks while struggling to build their own opportunities. They managed to get to get to half-time level but did not heed the warning signs and fell behind just before the hour mark. Wilson had been a

menace throughout as he showed no signs of rustiness on his return to the first team. It was no surprise he was involved in the opener as White turned the ball into his own net as he attempted to prevent the Newcastle forward from getting a shot off. Arteta was unable to hide his frustrations with the officiating against Spurs - a match in which his team conceded a penalty and had defender Rob Holding sent off - but he can have no complaints here as they were undone by a side who simply showed more hunger and quality.

look into the challenge and with the help of TV replays, he ruled that Mohit should be given three points. The score became 3-3 and remained like that till the end, and eventually Mohit was declared winner on criteria since he had scored the last point of the bout. 2022 Asian Para Games postponed due to Covid-19 HANGZHOU (CHINA), MAY 17 (IANS): The Hangzhou 2022 Asian Para Games organising committee (HAPGOC) and the Asian Paralympic Committee (APC) on Tuesday announced the postponement of the 2022 Asian Para Games, originally scheduled to take place from October 9-15 this year. The announcement follows the decision taken by the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA) and the HAGOC, the games organising committee, to postpone the Hangzhou 2022 Asian Games due to the size of the Games and the continuing impact of the Covid-19 pandemic. “A taskforce comprising of the APC, the Chinese Paralympic Committee and HAPGOC will now work on rescheduling the Games to take place in 2023. A further announcement on this is expected in the near future,” said a statement from the Asian Paralympic Committee. The emblem, slogan and year of the Games will remain unchanged.

57kg final, went straight to Jagbir, and began to assault him. He first abused Jagbir and then slapped him, who lost his balance and fell on the ground. The 57kg bout was stopped as the incident created a furore inside the KD Jadhav hall at the IG stadium. Hundreds of fans, officials and participants were shocked to witness a scene like that. Wrestling Federation

of India (WFI) officials managed to send Satender out of the hall and restarted the bout. Everything was happening right before the eyes of WFI President Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, who was sitting on the dias. “We have imposed life ban on Satender Malik. The decision was taken by WFI President,” WFI’s assistant secretary Vinod Tomar told PTI. “The referees officiating that bout will also be

called for an explanation that why points were not awarded to Mohit when it was clear that the takedown move was clean. Why did they let the situation go out of hand.” A visibly shaken Jagbir Singh said, “I had no inkling that he would do something like that.” A Class One referee since 2013, Jagbir added, “I had nothing to do with this bout. I had officiated the 97kg and 65kg finals and gave the ruling only after I was asked to do it.” “It’s up to WFI what action it wants to take against him.” Satyadev Malik told PTI, “I wanted to stay away from the decision making since we live close by. In international wrestling also, if the wrestler is from India, a jury from India can’t officiate that bout.” “So to avoid any situation where I am accused of bias, I stayed away. This is really unexpected because Satender is usually a very calm guy,” Satyadev, who was also jury of appeal for the tournament, said.

Ravi Dahiya, Bajrang, Deepak earn Indian wrestling CWG berths

Ravi Kumar Dahiya

NEW DELHI, MAY 17 (AGENCIES): Olympics medalists Ravi Kumar Dahiya and Bajrang Punia and Olympian Deepak Punia were the leading wrestlers who won the selection trials to make it to the Indian men’s wrestling squad for the upcoming Commonwealth Games. According to Sportstar, in the trials held in Delhi on Tuesday, Ravi defeated Vijay Patil and Aman (10-0 in the final) to take the 57kg slot. Bajrang beat Sujeet and Vishal (2-1 in the final) in low-scoring bouts to stake his claim in 65kg. Deepak Punia got the

better of Vicky and Sanjeet (6-0 in the final) for the 86kg spot. Naveen got past formidable opponents such as Jitender Kumar and Sagar Jaglan before beating Asian silver medallist Gourav Baliyan, who ousted former Worlds medallist Narsingh Yadav in the semifinals, 12-2 in the final to book his place in 74kg. World junior bronze medallist Deepak upset Commonwealth Games and Asian medallist Satyawart Kadian 5-2 in the semifinals and Sahil 10-0 in the final to win the 97kg trials. Mohit Grewal rallied

Bajrang Punia

to beat Satyender Malik 3-3 on criteria in the 125kg final. According to an eye witness, an angry Satyender assaulted referee Jagbir Singh following a contentious decision on a video challenge. The Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) called the police and lodged an FIR. WFI assistant secretary Vinod Tomar said Satyender was handed a life ban for his conduct. The squad: 57kg: Ravi Kumar Dahiya; 65kg: Bajrang Punia; 74kg: Naveen; 86kg: Deepak Punia; 97lg: Deepak; 125kg: Mohit Grewal.
