Reduced GST rates on Covid meds extended till Mishra arrives today, will meet NSCN (I-M) on Sep 20 Dec; compensation to states to end in June 2022 Staff Reporter
LUCKNOW, SEP 17 (PTI): The GST Council on Friday extended concessional tax rates on COVID-19 medicines, cut tax on cancer drugs and waived GST on import of highly expensive medicines for muscular atrophy, but will continue to keep petrol and diesel out of the uniform national tax regime. The Council, which is headed by the union finance minister and includes representatives from all states and UTs, decided to charge services by cloud kitchens and food delivery platforms like Zomato and Swiggy a 5 per cent GST. From January 1, food delivery apps will have to collect and deposit 5 per cent GST with the government, in place of restaurants, for deliveries made by them. There would be no extra tax burden on the end consumer. In other major decisions, the regime of paying

However, the cess currently levied on top of the GST rate on certain luxury and sin goods to fund the compensation amount for states will continue to be levied till March 2026. The collections will be used to pay off the borrowings that had to be done since 2020-21 to pay for state compensation. Briefing reporters on
Council’s decisions, Sitharaman said COVID medicines such as Remdesivir and Tocilizumab will continue to be charged a concessional GST rate till Dec 31. More COVID-19 treatment drugs such as Favipiravir will be charged a reduced rate of 5 per cent till December 31, she said. However, concessional tax for medical equipment will end on Sept 30. The panel also decided to continue keeping petrol and diesel out of GST purview as subsuming the current excise duty and VAT into one national rate would impact revenues. Including petrol and diesel under GST would have resulted in a reduction in near record-high rates. All kinds of pens will be charged 18 per cent rate, while miscellaneous goods of paper like cards, catalogue and printed material will see GST increasing to 18 per cent from 12 per cent.

DIMAPUR, SEP 17 (NPN): Former special director of the Intelligence Bureau (IB), AK Mishra is scheduled to arrive Dimapur on September 18 and hold talks with the NSCN (I-M) leadership on September 20 at Police Complex, Chümoukedima. According to sources, NSCN (I-M) general secretary Th. Muivah, who is also the group’s chief negotiator, will be attending the meeting. It may be mentioned that in 2020, director Intelligence Bureau Arvind Kumar along with special direc-
tor AK Mishra were directed by the Prime Minister’s Office to get the NSCN (I-M) back on track for bringing out an all-encompassing agreement towards solution. PMO was reportedly “disturbed” when communications between then Nagaland Governor and interlocutor for Naga talks RN Ravi and the NSCN (I-M) were snapped and task to reconnect was given to the IB. Though Centre was yet to officially declare over appointment of a new interlocutor to replace R.N. Ravi, sources said talks between IB officials and NSCN (I-M) were going for over a year now. RN Ravi, as the inter-
locutor, had declared that all official talks were over with the Naga groups by October 31,2019, the Centre is not likely to appoint another interlocutor, sources added. It may be recalled, that Ravi in October 2019 had informed Nagaland Post that the time-frame for concluding official talks with all groups was October 31, 2019 as promised earlier by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Also, as reported on October 31, 2019, both government of India and NSCN (I-M) arrived at a consensus over the demand for a separate Naga national flag and constitution. A senior NSCN (I-M)
leader, who was part of the delegation, confirmed to Nagaland Post that at the meeting on October 31, 2019 both sides “finalised all contentious issues” and agreed to pursue it through “peaceful political process”. However, NSCN (I-M) leader said that they still had “to give competencies the final touch for final solution.” Earlier this year, NSCN (I-M) reiterated its position for separate Naga flag and constitution, asserting that the Naga national identity symbolised by the Naga flag and constitution cannot be sacrificed and put on the bargaining table in exchange for anything.

‘Adherence to SOPs during festive season key to prevent 3rd wave’ NEW DELHI, SEP 17 (PTI): The festive season and whether or not people adhere to COVID-19-appropriate behaviour/SOPs during this period will be key deciding factors behind a third wave of the pandemic, experts said on Friday and warned people against lowering their guard. Also, the emergence of a new variant may become the driving force for a third wave as it would have more chances of transmitting rapidly in super-spreader events like festive gatherings
and celebrations, they said. In the context of rapid immunisation and nonemergence of any new variant of SARC-CoV-2 in recent months, the biggest risk factor for a third wave would be people lowering their guards during the festive season, said Dr. N K Arora, chairman of the COVID-19 working group of the National Technical Advisory Group on Immunisation (NTAGI). “Social and religious gatherings may facilitate rapid spread of delta virus
among those who are still susceptible to infection. Therefore, it is strongly advisable that people religiously follow Covid-appropriate behaviour and the administration takes strict measures to discourage social gatherings,” Arora said. “Currently, there is a declining trend of COVID-19 cases and we are in a pretty good situation. However, the coming few weeks with the festive season ongoing and with that associated changes of decrease in Covid-appropriate

Addressing a press conference at the state BJP head office, here, on Friday, Chandrasekhar said now was an opportune time for the youth to start their own businesses in this post-covid world. He said he came to Nagaland to motivate the youth to avail the opportunity that were being presented by centre in the form of various programmes. The MoS added that the newly inaugurated STPI in Kohima and NIELIT in Mokokchung were important as they were the core in PM Modi’s visions of bringing technol-
ogy and technological opportunities to the youth in the North East. He said while networks of NIELIT that were being created in the region would impart training and skills to the youth, on the other hand the newly inaugurated STPI would provide opportunities for entrepreneurs and youth in the information technology businesses. Chandrasekhar disclosed that 5 lakh jobs were created in the IT sector this year alone and that 3 lakh new jobs would be created in electronics and manufacturing. He further said since internet connectivity was the raw material for working from home, he would explore every possibility to improve the network by increasing the bandwidth. Deaf community of Nagaland after their church service.
DIMAPUR: Along with the rest of the world, the deaf community in Nagaland would also be celebrating the “International Week of the Deaf People” (IWDP) from September 20-26 by creating awareness on the deaf and their ways to the general public. This year, the theme “celebrating the thriving deaf community” focuses on how the global deaf community is thriving in a predominantly hearing world. In a press release, audiologist & speech language pathologist, Dimapur, Christina WallingZhimomi said that deaf community of Nagaland also thrived wherever they were, be it in school, at home or at work. Informing that the deaf culture in Nagaland began in 1987 with the establishment of Deaf Biblical Ministry in Dimapur, Christina informed that it began with the education
of nine deaf children at a time when they were deemed unteachable and uneducable by society. “These children were the first Deaf in Nagaland to receive education, and with education came understanding, acceptance and a realisation of selfidentity”, she informed. It may be mentioned that over the last three decades, members of the deaf community in Nagaland have grown and presently they have over 200 members across Nagaland. While highlighting the derogatory terminologies used towards the community for decades, Christina said that a disability certificate issued from Mokokchung said “deaf and dumb”, one from Kohima said “mutism” and another issued from Dimapur said “deaf and dumb with bilateral profound hearing loss”. “Though the certifi-
cates of these different individuals have used different terminologies, all these individuals are in fact just Deaf ”, she stated. In this regard, the community urged the responsible department to come up with “a uniform procedure and nomenclature” to be used in all the districts. The release also requested the department to develop a standard assessment procedure and a uniform nomenclature for all 21 disabilities listed in RPwD Act 2016, following national guidelines and to create awareness among the medical fraternity in Nagaland. The state deaf community expressed hope that the issue would be taken up and that corrective measures would be put into action at the earliest, as they had “been subjected to these derogator y terminologies for decades.”

government down down” etc, while accusing Prime Minister Narendra Modi of making false promises of employment to youths of the country. Later, the youth Congress members, holding banners and placards, tried to carry out a rally on the streets even as the police present at the spot dissuaded them from doing so. When they were forced not to carry out the rally, a clash broke out. With additional force, the police pushed them back inside the bhavan after a brief clash. No major untoward incident occurred in the police action. However, MPYC
leaders strongly condemned the police for not allowing them to carry out the protest rally. He alleged that the Modi government came to power by making big promises of giving two crore jobs per year. But it has not been fulfilled as yet. If the promise was translated into action, 14 crore youths would have got jobs. However, the number of unemployed youths increased manifolds under the BJP’s seven years rule, he said. NAGALAND POST, DIMAPUR SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 18, 2021
PM calls for SCO template to fight radicalisation Cong wishes Modi on birthday but says
NEW DELHI, SEP 17 (PTI): Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday pitched for developing a common template by the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) to fight radicalisation, saying it is a challenge to peace, security and trust deficit in the region as reflected by recent developments in Afghanistan. In a virtual address at the annual SCO summit, Modi also called for enhancing connectivity between the landlocked Central Asian countries and India but at the same time noted that connectivity projects should be consultative, transparent and they should be implemented while respecting the territorial integrity of all countries. The prime minister talked about Sufism and the cultural heritage of Central Asia, and said on the basis of this historical heritage, the SCO should develop a common template to fight radicalisation and extremism. “The 20th anniversary of the SCO is also a suitable occasion to think about the future of the SCO. I believe that the biggest challenges in this area are related to peace, security and trust deficit and the root cause of
Narendra Modi these problems is increasing radicalisation,” the prime minister said. He said the recent developments in Afghanistan have made this challenge more apparent and the SCO should take an initiative on this issue. “If we look at history, we will find that the region of Central Asia has been a bastion of moderate and progressive cultures and values. Traditions like Sufism have flourished here over the centuries and spread throughout the region and the world,” the prime minister said. “We can still see their influence in the cultural heritage of this region. On the basis of this historical heritage of Central Asia, SCO should develop a common template to fight radicalisation and extremism,” he said. Modi said the SCO
should work to develop a strong network among moderate, tolerant and inclusive institutions and traditions associated with Islam. “In India, and almost in all SCO countries, there are moderate, tolerant and inclusive institutions and traditions associated with Islam. SCO should work to develop a strong network between them,” he said. “In this context, I appreciate the useful work being done by SCO-RATS. We expect our SCO partners to actively participate in the calendar of activities that has been built for India’s Presidency of SCORATS,” he added. India has shown keen interest in deepening its security-related cooperation with the SCO and its Regional Anti-Terrorism Structure (RATS), which specifically deals with issues relating to security and defence. The prime minister said that one of the main reasons for the success of SCO is that its core focus has been on the priorities of the region. “My suggestions on radicalisation, connectivity and people-to-people relations will further strengthen this role of SCO,” he said. The prime minister
said fighting radicalisation is not only necessary for regional security and mutual trust, but it is also necessary for the bright future of our younger generations. “To compete with the developed world, our region has to become a stakeholder in emerging technologies. For this we have to encourage our talented youth towards science and rational thinking,” he said. The prime minister said the vast economic potential of the region has also remained untapped due to radicalisation and insecurity. He said, to take full advantage of the potential, there was a need to enhance connectivity and that India is committed to increasing its connectivity with Central Asia. “We believe that landlocked Central Asian countries can benefit immensely by connecting with India’s vast market. Unfortunately, many connectivity options are not open to them today due to lack of mutual trust,” Modi said. “Our investment in Iran’s Chabahar port and our efforts towards the International North-South Corridor are driven by this reality,” he said. The prime minister said that any initiative on
connectivity cannot be a one-way street and that connectivity projects should be consultative, transparent and participatory to ensure mutual trust. His comments came in the backdrop of increasing criticism of China’s Belt and Road Initiative. “In this regard, respect for the territorial integrity of all countries should be implicit. Based on these principles, the SCO should develop suitable norms for connectivity projects in the region,” Modi said. “With this, we will be able to restore the traditional connectivity of this region and only then connectivity projects will work to connect us, not to increase the distance between us. For this effort, India is ready to make any contribution from its side,” he said. The SCO, seen as a counterweight to NATO, is an eight-member economic and security bloc and has emerged as one of the largest transregional international organisations. India and Pakistan became its permanent members in 2017. The SCO was founded at a summit in Shanghai in 2001 by the presidents of Russia, China, the Kyrgyz Republic, Kazakhstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan.
country paying price for his ‘failures’
NEW DELHI, SEP 17 (PTI): The Congress on Friday wished Prime Minister Narendra Modi on his 71st birthday but said the country is paying the price for his “failures” on several fronts and so the day is being observed as “unemployment day”, “anti-farmer day” and “high prices day”. Congress leader Rahul Gandhi extended his wishes to the prime minister on Twitter. “ H a p p y B i r t h d ay, Modi ji,” he said. For the Indian Youth Congress and the NSUI, it was “national unemployment day”. Congress spokesperson Supriya Shrinate said birthdays of former prime ministers are celebrated as different days, with Jawaharlal Nehru’s birthday as “Children’s Day”, Indira Gandhi’s as “National Integration Day”, Rajiv Gandhi’s as “Sadbhavna Day” and Atal Bihari Vajpayee’s as “Good Governance Day”. But Modi’s birthday is being observed as “unemployment day”, she added. She said she prays that God gives the prime minister the wisdom to realise what he has led the country to. “It is the prime minister’s birthday and from this
Rahul Gandhi platform, we wish him a happy birthday. We pray for his well being, but we do believe that this day is being celebrated in many parts of the country as unemployment day, anti-farmer day, high prices day, crippled economy day, as winning over your crony capitalists friends day, as ED, IT, CBI raid day, and the corona mismanagement day,” Shrinate told reporters. “We do believe that in the last seven years, you have failed on several fronts and we hope and pray that God gives you the wisdom to realise that this is what you have led the country to. This is where, you have failed and today as a result, India is paying a heavy price for it,” she also said. She claimed India has the maximum number of unemployed people despite Modi’s tall promises.
She alleged that every month, jobs are being lost and asked, “where are those two crore annual jobs, one would want to ask? Why are 61 lakh government jobs lying vacant?” Noting that farmers are protesting for nine long months without a solution in sight, Shrinate said high prices in gas, diesel, petrol, edible oil, pulses, daily essential items are making lives of people difficult. She claimed demonetisation and GST have crippled the economy and there has been shutdown of MSMEs and small businesses as a result, as investment in the consumption chain is completely broken. “Still, you have put India on sale for a few friends of yours and which is why, it is important that we are calling it the ‘punjipati poojan divas’ (crony capitalist friends day),” she said. Shrinate also alleged that during Covid crisis, the country faced shortage of vaccines, oxygen, essential drugs as the prime minister was too busy electioneering and the “red flags were being manipulated to suit his image”. She accused the prime minister of misuse of ED, IT, CBI, as frontal organisations.
Scrap farm laws, talk to farmers to find SAD protest against farm laws; Sukhbir, Harsimrat, others detained the way forward: Amarinder to Centre CHANDIGARH, SEP 17 (PTI): Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh on Friday demanded immediate scrapping of the Centre’s new farm laws, calling for detailed discussions with farmers to find a way forward. Pointing out that many farmers had died in the protests against these laws, which were passed by the parliament a year ago, he said the Centre should withdraw the legislations in the interests of farmers and the nation. Singh was speaking after inaugurating the third state-level virtual Kisan Mela organised by the Punjab Agricultural University (PAU), Ludhiana. “It is high time the central government realised its blunder and withdraw the legislations in the interest of farmers and the nation,” he said. The chief minister, who wore a ‘no farmers, no food’ badge, said, “Till date, the Constitution of India has been amended as many as 127 times, so why can it not be amended once again to scrap the farm laws and resolve the imbroglio resulting from them? “What is the problem in doing it a 128th time?” he sought to know from the
Amarinder Singh BJP-led central government. He also alleged that the Centre was out to “ruin the farmers”. The senior Congress leader further said what was happening with the farmers today was “extremely sad”, given the immense contribution made by them to India’s development and progress. The two-day Kisan mela is centred on the theme “Karie Parali Di Sambhal, Dharti Maa Hove Khushal” in line with the state government’s focus on eliminating stubble burning, an official statement said. Recalling that he was asked by the Centre to stop Punjab’s farmers from going to Delhi last November, Singh said he had outright refused to do so as protest is the democratic right of farmers. He made it clear that he
continues to stand with the farmers in their fight against the “draconian legislations”, with his government continuing to give compensation and jobs to families of deceased farmers. Noting the contribution of Punjab and its farmers to the country’s growth, the chief minister said the state, with only 1.53 per cent of total geographical area of India, produces about 18 per cent of the country’s wheat, 11 per cent paddy, 4.4 per cent cotton and 10 per cent milk. For the past many decades, Punjab has been contributing about 35-40 per cent of wheat and 25-30 per cent of rice to the central pool, he said, expressing pride in the achievements of the state’s farmers. The CM also pointed out that the state had attained a record wheat productivity (5,188 kg/hectare) and production (182.6 lakh tons) during 2018-19. It also achieved record rice productivity (4,366 kg/ hectare) and production (133.8 lakh tons) during 2017-18. Record cotton productivity was also achieved during 2019-20, he added. Singh urged farmers to take full advantage of PAU’s advancements in technologies, seeds, among others.

BARAMULLA (JK), SEP 17 (PTI): A Rs 40-crore transit camp will be constructed for accommodation of 336 Kashmiri Pandit migrant families here as part of efforts to rehabilitate them in the Kashmir Valley, Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal said on Friday. After laying the foundation stone for the transit camp, he said that it was a very significant step taken by the central government for Kashmiri Pandit migrant families who want to return
and live in Kashmir peacefully. “For the rehabilitation of the Kashmiri Pandits, a transit camp will be constructed at a cost of Rs 40 crore. president Sukhbir Singh Badal, former Union minister Harsimrat Kaur Badal along with 15 other party leaders have been detained at Parliament Street police station. According to the police, the leaders were detained for taking out the protest march in violation of COVID-19 guidelines. They were subsequently released. The protest march led to massive traffic snarls in several parts of the national capital, including Lutyens’ Delhi and ITO. Former Union minister Harsimrat Kaur Badal, who resigned from the government last year over the farm laws, said in a tweet that the massive participation in the
protest march shows the public anger. “Farmers have been protesting at the Delhi border for a year, but the Centre is keen on quashing them. We are proud to have quit the NDA. Akali Dal will continue to resist despotism,” she added. Alleging that the Delhi Police tried to stop their protest march, SAD spokesperson Daljit Singh Cheema said, “It is an undeclared emergency in New Delhi.” A section of farmers, mainly from Punjab, Haryana and western Uttar Pradesh, has been protesting at Delhi border points against the Centre’s three farm laws for over nine months now.

agaland sits on top of crude oil reserves estimated at around 600 million tonnes mainly in Wokha, Mokokchung,Mon, Peren, Dimapur districts. Besides crude oil, Nagaland also has abundance of gas and coal reserves. These certainly are a boon which should have transformed Nagaland. All other north eastern states barring Assam, do not possess such huge reserves of oil, gas and coal. The issue of oil exploration and exploitation has been dogged with the illogical stand taken vis-à-vis Article 371 A in the state while the Naga political issue has decreed these as being under sovereign rights and therefore, non-negotiable. It may be recalled that in 1973, the then NNO government in Nagaland permitted the Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) to conduct survey and investigation of crude oil and allowing a limited quantity to be extracted for the purpose. In between 1981 to 1994 the state government was given oil royalty of only Rs. 33.3 crores whereas ONGC owed five times the amount since it had extracted a huge amount under the pretext of trial basis. However, in 1994 NSF and other organisations forcibly stopped ONGC from carrying out its oil activities in Nagaland and mainly the ones at Changpang and Tssori under Wokha district from where it has been extracting crude oil. ONGC was made to stop extraction on account of these being considered as Naga national assets. Sadly, the infrastructure and seamless pipes which were created by the ONGC were destroyed and stolen on the ground that oil and its resources would be utilized after getting sovereignty and to enforce Article 371 (A). Villagers from Wokha district recalled how dozens of huge tankers transported oil daily from Nagaland to nearby oil pumping station at Jorhat to be moved to oil refineries either in Digboi or Numaligarh etc. Recently, Lok Sabha MP Tokheho has raised the issue of oil revenues which Nagaland is losing due to the unresolved issue of oil exploration and exploitation. Tokheho had cited figures to show how much Assam is earning as revenue from oil. He claimed that Assam collected Rs. 17,995.83 crores in the last ten years from 20112021. On the other hand, he said Nagaland is losing approximately Rs. 5 Crores daily or Rs. 1825 crores annually as oil revenue. Such a huge amount as revenue would have surely made Nagaland not only economically much better placed but also impacted the entire socio-economic scenario. Whilst Nagaland had stopped extraction of oil owing to various reasons, the ONGC has continued drilling in Assam and has already completed 39 oil fields of which 27 are operational. Geleki, Khoraghat, Nambor, Kasomarigaon, Suphyam, Dayalpur, Barholla and Mekrang oil fields are along the Assam-Nagaland border. Nagaland has been claiming these areas based on traditional ownership and historical accounts but royalty for these are being collected by Assam. Tokheho has also pointed out that Assam not only collects oil revenues from wells along disputed areas claimed by Nagaland but also Changlang and Khasam claimed by Arunachal Pradesh and Churamchanpur which is also claimed by Manipur. Nagaland’s attempt to extract oil the Nagaland Petroleum & Natural Gas (NPNG) Regulations and the NPNG Rules (both in 2012) under the powers of Article 371A was aborted after the Centre said parliament and not state legislatures had the constitutional powers to frame such rules under List-1 of the 7th Schedule of the Constitution of India, including Energy 53. Quite rightly, the MP said while the world is switching to renewable and clean energy from fossil fuel(oil), time and tide will not wait for Nagas.
DailyDevotion Is There Good in Temptation?
No temptation has overtaken you except such as is common to man… —1 Corinthians 10:13
The word temptation has come to mean something bad to us today, but we tend to use the word in the wrong way. Temptation itself is not sin; it is something we are bound to face simply by virtue of being human. Not to be tempted would mean that we were already so shameful that we would be beneath contempt. Yet many of us suffer from temptations we should never have to suffer, simply because we have refused to allow God to lift us to a higher level where we would face temptations of another kind. A person’s inner nature, what he possesses in the inner, spiritual part of his being, determines what he is tempted by on the outside. The temptation fits the true nature of the person being tempted and reveals the possibilities of his nature. Every person actually determines or sets the level of his own temptation, because temptation will come to him in accordance with the level of his controlling, inner nature. Temptation comes to me, suggesting a possible shortcut to the realization of my highest goal— it does not direct me toward what I understand to be evil, but toward what I understand to be good. Temptation is something that confuses me for a while, and I don’t know whether something is right or wrong. When I yield to it, I have made lust a god, and the temptation itself becomes the proof that it was only my own fear that prevented me from falling into the sin earlier. Temptation is not something we can escape; in fact, it is essential to the well-rounded life of a person. Beware of thinking that you are tempted as no one else— what you go through is the common inheritance of the human race, not something that no one has ever before endured. God does not save us from temptations— He sustains us in the midst of them (see Hebrews 2:18 and Hebrews 4:15-16).

NAGALAND POST, DIMAPUR SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 18, 2021
The role of societal platform thinking in educational leadership
I
t is no secret that the education system in India is in dire need of improvement; there is a long way to go until all students pass out with expected learning outcomes. For a long time the problem was seen in quantitative terms – more schools, more teachers, higher salaries, etc. – and while that is certainly part of the issue, there is a growing emphasis on educational quality, as evidenced by the National Educational Policy, 2020. As with any other kinds of reforms, this kind of meaningful change will require strong leadership at all levels, from statelevel officials to school principals to civil society. In order to support these leaders and ensure that their efforts are sustainable and long-lasting, it is vital to take a systemic approach that looks at the entire landscape of education. Societal platform thinking is one such approach that looks at the whole system and the interplay between stakeholders from society, governments, and the education ecosystem. It looks to create a conducive ecosystem around education leaders that maximizes the impact they can have on the system. It takes the platform thinking approach that enabled commercial platforms like YouTube and Uber to transform the world but imbues it with the purpose of solving societal problems. Societal platfor m thinking Addressing major societal issues like educa-
tion, will require a holistic and sustainable approach that functions at scale and with speed. The immense size and diversity of such problems need solutions to be designed for scale. There is a ticking clock with education – India currently has an overwhelmingly young population so it is necessary to improve the system while this demographic isn’t a burden on the economy. Societal platform thinking can achieve these goals by using an open technology infrastructure to create an environment for collaboration and co-creation. This approach also gives people a shared purpose where no individual ever works in isolation. Any efforts, successful or otherwise, adds to an ever-increasing knowledge base to be used by fellow reformers. Commercial platforms like YouTube and Uber are guided by stakeholder interests but societal platforms have societal transformation as their goal. Societal platform thinking is fundamentally guided by principles of agency and empowerment as enabling local communities to solve their problems offers many advantages. Local contextual knowledge is not only likely to lead to better solutions, but it also gives people agency and dignity in dealing with their own problems. This gives them a sense of empowerment and ownership that motivates them to sustain the effectiveness of their interventions. For example, teachers and prin-
cipals are most likely to know the difficulties faced by their students and their surrounding communities. More importantly, teachers will know the students and communities themselves, and these relationships are critical in solving the issues. Over time, these personal bonds deepen, enhancing the ability of educational leaders to improve educational outcomes. This phenomenon can be speedened and enhanced by the knowledge and tools provided on the platform. How societal platform thinking can benefit educational leaders In order to drive systemic transformation in education, building the capacity of education leaders is essential. Dynamic leaders possess the ability to observe, assess, and prioritise the needs of their school or district by continuously analysing insights. Even more importantly, they are always in a continuous state of learning whether it is through observations on the job, interviews and interactions with peers, or traditional knowledge building, and continuously strive to apply these learnings to drive improvements in their environment. It can thus be said that a leader needs to be capable of continuously performing four primary actions – to sense, to make sense, to learn and to improve. As is implied by the name, societal platform thinking enables these journeys by bringing educational leaders into a
community that catalyses interactions among them. Leaders can interact with their peers from across the country to learn about best practices. They can also collaborate on designing new solutions that can then be incorporated into the pantheon of best practices shared via the platform. A vibrant professional community with the ability to share learnings, best practices and technical knowledge has the potential to drive change. We are now living in a digital age where the scale of communities is no longer limited by physical distance. This could lead to a vibrant exchange of information across the country, or indeed even the globe. If data, solutions, best practices and all learnings are exchanged consistently and in real time, the overall system benefits as it becomes exponentially more adaptable and responsive to new challenges. Technology can be the multiplier This ability to evolve rapidly at a granular level is boosted considerably through the effective use of technology. A digital, online platform allows instant and continuous collaborations between people who may not have interacted as much in a solely physical paradigm. It is this characteristic of platforms like social media and YouTube that have enabled them to transform society. Societal platforms aim to leverage technology by bringing together different voices and empowering them to
alter the landscape of social issues like education, poverty, health, finance etc. Another benefit of digital infrastructure is that it facilitates a rich culture of data collection and analyses that can prove extremely beneficial to educational leaders. Reforms need to be based on evidence – traditional methods of relying on intuitive perception and gut feeling can sometimes have counterproductive effects. The ability of modern technology to collect and quickly process large amounts of data, especially with modern tools like Artificial Intelligence, can lead to insights that escape human perception. For example, performance analysis tools can be used by leaders to evaluate schools, teachers or principals and draw insights on what corrective measures are required. A digital platform also provides educational leaders with a host of tools that can make their job easier. For example, they can manage the implementation of projects using a programme that allows them to assign tasks and invite collaborators. These tools can ease the administrative and supervisory burden on leaders, allowing them to allocate more attention on critical, strategic tasks. All hands on deck Indian education stands at a precipice. There is an urgent need to educate young Indians so that they can find employment in an extremely turbulent job market and help boost the economy. On the other
hand, there has been an extremely positive shift in education leadership towards new and more modern ways of pedagogy. The disruptive effects of the pandemic and shift to e-learning has only accelerated this transition. Traditionally a slow-moving sector, circumstances have forced educational leaders to adapt and innovate. It is vital that this momentum not be lost, and that educational leaders continue to strive towards necessary improvements. This is no small task and educational leaders will need to be surrounded by a supportive system of peers and colleagues. Societal platforms can enable this kind of systemic collaboration – whether it is between educational leaders or between governments, civil societies and the educational sector – and will be crucial in driving growth and progress in the education sector. They allow for the free and open exchange of ideas and information, making it possible to deliver solutions that cater to the specific requirements of a region in a way that can also be scaled easily. The adoption of societal platforms will be crucial in setting up a robust movement to transform education that can be sustained by its own momentum and bring the country closer to the utopia of a perfect educational system. No longer would a mildly sick patient becomes a chronic one after they reach Dimapur because of the wild ride, striking thousands of potholes and disassembled blocks of rocks, during their transportation. Concerns over garbage burning
Sir,
Indiscriminate and unmindful burning of garbage, mainly plastic bags, on streets causes great concern. Incineration of plastic waste poses a great threat to humans and animals. Plastic waste on being burnt releases toxic gases such as dioxins, furans, mercury and polychlorinated biphenyls into the atmosphere and further liberates hazardous halogens and pollutes air. We share the same air and water with everyone in your community, what we can do is separate your metal, glass, plastic, and paper before we burn them. We must also educate our family and neighbours about the hazards of trash burning because it does more harm than we think we know. Nochet Ao, Dimapur. newspaper nor that of the Editor in any manner.

the standoff between the Trinamool Congress and the Centre after elections in West Bengal. According to a source, five chief justices and 28 judges were recommended to be transferred. Justice Akil Qureshi, who is currently chief justice of the Tripura High Court, will be recommended to head Rajasthan High Court, while Rajasthan High Court chief justice Indrajit
Mahanty will go to Tripura High Court as chief justice. Five chief justices to be transfer red are: Arup Kumar Goswami from Andhra Pradesh to Chhattisgarh High Court; Mohd. Rafiq from Madhya Pradesh to Himachal Pradesh High Court; Akil Qureshi from Tripura to Rajasthan High Court; Indrajit Mahanty from Rajasthan to Tripura High Court; and Biswanath So-
madder from Meghalaya to Sikkim High Court. According to the source, the decisions were taken by the Supreme Court collegium Thursday evening. However, the collegium headed by Chief Justice N.V. Ramana and comprising justices U.U. Lalit and A.M. Khanwilkar -- has not formally notified these decisions. The collegium, on September 3, had made 68 recommendations including for 10 women judges, for appointment to high courts. However, the Centre has not acted on these names so far. Breaking a nearly twoyear deadlock, on August 18, the top court had published on its website names of nine persons recommended for appointment as judges to the top court. All nine names were cleared by the Centre within two weeks.
PM’s meeting with secys raises speculation of reshuffle in top bureaucracy NEW DELHI, SEP 17 (AGENCIES): After assigning additional charges of around a dozen departments to incumbent secretaries, the government is staring at another half a dozen secretary-level posts falling vacant by the end of this month. Now amid a lot of speculation among the bureaucracy of an imminent reshuffle of top bureaucrats, Prime Minister Narendra Modi is holding a meeting with all secretaries in the central government on Saturday (today). This is being seen as a crucial exercise before a likely mega reshuffle in top bureaucracy. Sources said there is no official agenda, but all top bureaucrats have been preparing for the meeting with all possible details considering the experience of the PM surprising them with some details and deep insight of issues related to their departments. Unlike the previous governments, the appointments of bureaucrats in the Centre in the current regime have been kept as top secret till the official orders are issued. “None gets any clue of appointments, transfers and extensions till you see the order,” admitted a senior bureaucrat. Senior bureaucracy has been playing a crucial role in the Modi administration and insiders say that in some cases the PM directly contacts some secretaries holding key posts.
India’s 61st software tech park inaugurated in Kohima (From p-1) The minister also encouraged the State government to hold monthly meetings and work closely with the Union ministry of electronics &information technology to explore job opportunities. Observing that post Covid-19 there had been a spike in demand for technology globally, he claimed that India recorded double digit growth in IT sector, adding that five lakh jobs are expected to be created in the sector in the current financial year. He said electronic manufacturing companies had created over three lakh jobs, adding that global demand would create a huge opportunity for India. He explained that the purpose of his visit to the North-eastern States was aimed at bringing about a change in the technology ecosystem in the region and deepening the extent and quality of opportunities that come from the ecosystem. Addressing the gathering, IT&C communication advisor Mmhonlumo Kikon claimed that the State government had invested lot of energy and resources in the IT sector, mentioning that STPI would not only give grants and identify entrepreneurs, but also do handholding through mentorship. He said the State government envisaged to create 5000 IT
and ITeS-related jobs in collaboration with STPI in the next two years and, with a changed scenario due to Covid-19, both STPI and IT department would create an ecosystem where internet would be made available in every nook and corner of Nagaland. The adviser urged the ITagencies in the State like NIELIT and National Informatics Centre (NIC) to collaborate and coordinate with the IT department in future. In his welcome address, STPI Northeast & West Bengal jurisdictional director Prabir Kumar Dassaid STPI had been set up at Kohima to cater to the needs of IT/ITeS/ESDM industry and boost entrepreneurship and IT exports from Nagaland. He said STPI has been working with focus on promotion of IT/ITES exports from the country by providing single window regulatory services under STP and EHTP schemes, plug play incubation facilities for start-up companies and young entrepreneurs and high-speed data communication services for a seamless access for offshore IT/ ITES exports. Mentioning that exports by STPI units jumped from Rs 52 crore in 1992-93 to more than Rs 4,66,926 crore in 2019-20, Das mentioned that 51 out of 60 STPI centres were located in Tier-II and Tier-Ill cities with the
objective of ensuring a uniform and overall development of IT/ ITES across the country. He said STPI at Kohima aimed to host a centre of entrepreneurship in IT applications in graphic design which startups, students and innovators could utilise for research and development of new innovative solutions. Das said STPI facility at Kohima would help promote the region as one of the preferred IT destinations and attract IT/ ITES/ESDM units to the State, promote export of IT software and services from the region thus contributing to Gross National Exports, provide statutory services under STP and Electronic Hardware Technology Park (EHTP) Scheme. “STPI also aims to provide state-of-the-art incubation facility, high speed data communication (HSDC) and other value-added services, encourage innovation, creation of IPR and product development, mentoring and promotional support, offer a vibrant ecosystem for creating a maker culture among technoentrepreneurs and start-ups and strive to create direct and indirect employment opportunities,” he specified. In his address, IT&C principal secretary KD Vizo recalled that an MoU was signed in 2015 for setting up STPI at Kohi-
maknowing its huge potential. He said the State government had a vision of making Nagaland the next IT hub of South East Asia and was slowly getting ready to embrace IT culture in a big way. Asserting that the State’s biggest strength was availability of highly-trained IT savvy youth who were willing to compete with rest of the world, he said the youth were awaiting infrastructure like STPI. He also referred to the awards received by State like the best-performing State in Northeast in 2015-16, Enterprise Applications Award in NE Tech Sabha in 2018, top State in the Northeast in e-Governance as per the National e-Governance Service Delivery Assessment conducted by the department of administrative reforms & public grievances, GoI, etc. Now, with the commissioning of STPI at Kohima, Vizo remarked that the day may not be too far off when Nagaland was rated as having the best STPI in the country, takingthe State to the next level and it “the land of eGovernance” through extensive use of e-Governance and ICTbased technologies. The Union minister also virtually inaugurated the permanent campus of NIELIT Chuchuyimlang and interacted live with the students.

I-T deptt conducts raids against ex-Maha minister Deshmukh
Anil Deshmukh
MUMBAI, SEP 17 (PTI): The Income Tax Department on Friday conducted searches at multiple premises linked to former Maharashtra home minister Anil Deshmukh in connection with a tax evasion investigation, official sources said. The raids are being carried out in Mumbai and Nagpur (Maharashtra) as well as Jaipur in Rajasthan, they said. The 71-year-old former minister is being probed by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and the Enforcement Directorate
(ED) too on charges of alleged money laundering and payment of purported kickbacks in the police establishment of Maharashtra. The ED case against Deshmukh, who was earlier the home minister in the Maha Vikas Aghadi government, and others came after the CBI booked him in the corruption case related to allegations of at least Rs 100 crore bribe made by former Mumbai Police commissioner Param Bir Singh. Deshmukh had said that Singh made the allegations against him after he was removed from the post of Mumbai Police Commissioner. He has refused to comply with at least five summons sent by the ED for questioning in the case and has instead suggested for the agency to interact with him over an online link saying he was a “law abiding citizen.”

The decision was taken after a probe of data irregularities allegedly due to pressure by some top bank officials to boost China’s ranking in 2017 came to light. “After reviewing all the information available to date on ‘Doing Business’, including the findings of past reviews, audits, and the report the bank released today on behalf of the board of executive directors, World Bank Group management has taken the decision to discontinue the Doing Business report,” the World Bank Group said in a statement on Thursday. The group remains firmly committed to advancing the role of the private sector in development and providing support to governments to design the regulatory environment that supports this, it said.

AUKUS aimed at securing Indo-Pacific: Aus
NEW DELHI, SEP 17 (PTI): Australia on Friday said its decision to join a security alliance with the US and UK is aimed at developing capabilities that can contribute along with India and other countries in deterring behaviour that threatens the peace and security in the Indo-Pacific. Australia’s High Commissioner to India Barry O’Farrell said China’s massive military modernisation programme, challenging strategic environment in the Indo-Pacific and intensification of great power competition in the region prompted Canberra to become part of the ambitious AUKUS partnership. The AUKUS (Australia, the UK and the US) partnership was unveiled by US President Joe Biden, Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison and British PM Boris Johnson on Thursday. “The decision reflects a much more challenging strategic environment, an environment we share with India, where great power

competition is intensifying, where territorial tensions in the South China Sea, Taiwan and elsewhere are becoming more challenging,” he said. The partnership, seen as an effort to counter China in the Indo-Pacific, will allow the US and UK to provide Australia with the technology to develop nuclear-powered submarines for the first time. The High Commissioner said strengthening Australia’s defence capabilities through nuclear-

powered submarines will form part of the country’s contribution to a secure and prosperous Indo-Pacific. He said the Australian prime minister, the foreign minister and the defence minister spoke to their counterparts in India to inform them of the decision before the announcement on the AUKUS partnership was made. O’Farrell said AUKUS will not affect the Quadrilateral Security Dialogue or Quad that
comprises India, the US, Australia and Japan. The envoy said the investment in the Indo-Pacific in expanding military capability is proceeding at an “unprecedented rate” and it is being driven by China, which has the largest military modernisation programme underway in the world. “So strengthening Australia’s defence capabilities through nuclearpowered submarines will form part of Australia’s contribution to a secure and prosperous Indo-Pacific, and that capability will increase Australia’s strategic weight and allow us to more effectively shape our region’s future trajectory,” he told reporters. The high commissioner said Australia is striving to retain an inclusive regional order where the rights of all states are respected, whether they are big states or small states. “We want to contribute to strategic reassurance measures that ensure no one country believes they
can advance their strategic ambitions through conflict,” he said in a clear reference to China. “It’s not about seeking to provoke any particular regional power, rather it’s about ensuring we have capabilities that contribute along with India and other countries to deterring the types of behaviour that threatens the peace and security in the Indo-Pacific today and in the future,” O’Farrell said. He said Australia has taken the decision after deep and serious thought. “It’s in response to those changing strategic circumstances but it’s also part of our relationship bilaterally, trilaterally and quadrilaterally across the region,” the envoy said. “These partnerships, including the partnerships that we’ve announced in relation to submarines with the US and the UK, reinforce existing regional structures, including our shared commitment to ASEAN centrality,” he said.
Taliban government not inclusive, but essential to work with it: Putin MOSCOW, SEP 17 (PTI): Russian President Vladimir Putin on Friday said that the Afghanistan government formed by the Taliban is not representative and inclusive, but it is essential to work with it as he stressed on the need to coordinate the stance of other countries on the issue of recognition. Putin, addressing the joint meeting of the leaders of the Collective Security Treaty Organisation (CSTO) and the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) via video link, said that the Taliban movement, having actually become the country’s sole master, formed its government, which assumed responsibility for Afghanistan’s future, Russia’s official TASS news agency reported. “This is an interim government, as the Taliban themselves say, and it cannot be really called representative or inclusive,” he said, adding that there are no members of other ethnic groups in it. “However, it

appears that it is necessary to work with it too. As for recognition, I believe, and I agree with those who spoke about it, that we need to coordinate our stance on the issue,” Putin said. The Taliban is banned in Russia. Though the Russian government has not yet formally announced its recognition to the interim government of the Taliban, it along with China and Pakistan, has kept its embassy open in Kabul. According to Putin, it would be optimal to foster the dialogue “through the mechanism of the extended troika on Afghanistan (Russia, China, Pakistan and the
US), this work is already in progress.” He also cited the previous Moscow format of consultations on Afghanistan that involved other countries of the SCO and the CSTO. “Its work can be revived if necessary and if all its member states agree,” Putin said as he mentioned his proposal to explore the possibility of resuming the activities of the SCO-Afghanistan Contact Group, “which was set up to work with Afghan partners.”. Founded in 1992, the CSTO groups six former Soviet republics of Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Russia and Tajikistan with the aim of safeguarding peace and stability in Eurasia. On Thursday, the CSTO military bloc led by Russia said that the situation in Afghanistan following the Taliban’s seizure of power last month is “alarming” and it is ready to “take effective measures” to ensure safety of its member states’ borders.

Chinese astronauts safely return to Earth BEIJING, SEP 17 (PTI): C h i n a o n Fr i d ay a n nounced that its manned mission to construct a space station was a complete success after three Chinese astronauts returned to Earth after concluding the country’s longest crewed space mission. The Shenzhou-12 manned spaceship carrying astronauts Nie Haisheng, Liu Boming and Tang Hongbo touched down at the Dongfeng landing site in north China’s Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, the China Manned Space Agency (CMSA) said. The mission to construct the space station was a complete success, it said. The three astronauts from the Shenzhou-12 manned spaceflight mission are in good condition after landing on Earth, official media reported. They spent 90 days at the Tianhe module on China’s space station, some 380km above Earth. E a r l i e r, t h e m a i n parachute of the re-entry capsule of Shenzhou-12

was deployed successfully ahead of the spacecraft’s landing in Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region. The three astronauts entered the space station module in June this year on a three-month mission to build many of its components. Billed as the most prestigious and strategically important space project for China after the country’s recent Mars and previous Moon missions, the low orbit space station would be the country’s eye
from the sky, providing round the clock bird’s-eye view for its astronauts on the rest of the world. The space station is expected to be ready by next year. This is China’s longest crewed space mission to date and the first in nearly five years. China previously sent the space station’s Tianhe core cabin module on April 29, and a cargo spacecraft with supplies on May 29. Once ready, the station is expected to be
opened for China’s close allies like Pakistan and other international space cooperation partners. Ji Qiming, an assistant to the China Manned Space Agency (CMSA) director, told the media on Wednesday that besides close cooperation with Russia, China is also having bilateral cooperation exchanges with countries including France, Italy, Pakistan and others focussing on space experiments in fundamental physics, space medicine and space autonomy on the space station. Se parately, China and Russia also unveiled a roadmap to build a lunar space station, official media reported. The station aims to develop research facilities on the surface of the moon, in orbit or both. Once ready, China will be the only country to own a space station while the ageing International Space Station (ISS) is now a collaborative project of several countries.

Heart symptoms you shouldn’t ignore Loud Snoring
Chest Pain
Coughing and Wheezing
This is the most common sign of a heart attack, but it’s not always a crushing, sudden pain. It could be more of an uncomfortable feeling -- like squeezing or heaviness. You might mistake it for heartburn. It may last for more than a few minutes or go away and come back
Arm or Back Pain Men typically feel it in the left arm, but women may hurt in both. Your arms could feel heavy or “useless.” It could be a sign of angina or a heart attack. Pain may start in your chest, then move to your upper or lower back. Be suspicious if the pain comes out of nowhere or wakes you up at night and doesn’t seem linked to a particular joint or muscle.
If it’s happening every night, you could have sleep apnea. That’s a condition which causes pauses in your breathing while you sleep. It’s linked to atrial fibrillation and may raise your risk of high blood pressure and type 2 diabetes. If you don’t get treatment for your sleep apnea, you may have a higher chance of life-threatening heart trouble.
Neck or Jaw Pain
Shortness of breath with a regular cough and wheeze can be signs of heart failure. That’s when your heart doesn’t pump well enough to supply your body with all the blood and oxygen it needs. When you have heart failure, blood and fluids can back up into your lungs. You may have a hard time breathing or hear a rattling sound when you inhale. You might cough up pinkish mucus.
Swelling You could have it in your feet, ankles, legs, or stomach if you have heart failure. You may notice that your shoes feel tight. As blood flow out of your heart slows down, blood going back to it through the veins can back up. That causes fluid to collect in spots that it shouldn’t. Your kidneys can’t get rid of water and salt, which leads to more swelling.
Trouble Getting Around
You can feel pain above the shoulders when you’re having a heart attack. Your lower jaw on one or both sides may hurt or feel tight. Your neck may ache, or you could have a choking or burning feeling in your throat.
When you have heart failure, your body moves blood and the oxygen it carries away from areas that aren’t as important, like your limbs, and sends it to the brain and heart. That makes moving around harder. Regular activities, like walking the dog or going up and down stairs, may be hard to do. As your heart gets weaker, simply getting dressed or walking across the room can tire you out.
Unusual Fatigue Everybody’s busy, so it’s normal to feel tired once in a while. But it’s a red flag for heart attack if you suddenly get wiped out at times you usually wouldn’t. Maybe you’re extra worn out after your typical exercise routine or you’re exhausted just walking to the bathroom. You also might feel drained but still find it hard to sleep.
Fainting and Nausea
Rapid Heart Rate With heart failure, your ticker may beat fast to make up for its lack of pumping power. You may feel like your heart is racing.
(WebMD Feature) When to Get Emergency Help
You may feel like you’re going to pass out. Fainting happens when your blood pressure is low and your heart isn’t pumping the right amount of oxygen to your brain. It might be because you’re overheating, but heart conditions could also be the culprit. Nausea and lack of appetite can also be signs of trouble with your ticker.
Sweating and Trouble Breathing If you’re having a heart attack, you may break out in a sweat even if you’re not pushing yourself hard. You could feel cold and clammy. You may be short of breath, like you’ve run a marathon, even if you haven’t moved off your couch. When you lie down, it may be even harder to breathe.
Get medical help right away if you think that you or someone you’re with has any of the symptoms of a heart attack. Quick treatment can cut down the chances of damage to your heart. Call 911 if you have: • Pain, pressure, or squeezing in your chest • Pain or discomfort that spreads to your shoulders, back, neck, or arms • Shortness of breath • Lightheadedness, dizziness, or fainting • Sweating and nausea
10 ways to control your eating programming, research shows.
Use blue plates
Believe it or not, the color of your dishes might make a difference in how much food you serve yourself. The more the food blends in with the plate color, the more chow you’re likely to take, research shows. So consider using plates in a different hue.
Use smaller bowls and plates
The size of your dishes and utensils gives your brain cues about how much you’re “supposed” to eat -- and a bigger dish means more food. In one study, people at a Chinese buffet who got a large plate served themselves 52% more food, and ate 45% more, than those with smaller plates.
Chew gum in the grocery store
Hit the pause button before giving in to
Irregular Heartbeat A heart rhythm disorder like atrial fibrillation (AFib) can cause your ticker to beat fast and out of sync. Some people describe the feeling as a flutter or like a fish is flopping around inside their chest. AFib can lead to blood clots and stroke if you don’t treat it. It’s possible you might not notice anything unusual about the way your heart beats but you might feel short of breath, tired, or lightheaded.
Erectile Dysfunction (ED) If you have this problem often, it could be a sign that you have heart disease. Blood vessels in your penis may be clogged with plaque, just like vessels around your heart can get blocked. Without good blood flow, it’s hard to get and keep an erection. Talk to your doctor if you have ED to figure out what’s going on.

It was last higher than on the latest list just one week earlier, when it placed at No. 25, its peak. ‘Gold’ was released in 1993 in the U.S. and has spent 186 weeks on the chart in total. “We took a break in the spring of 1982 and now we’ve decided it’s time to end it,” ABBA said in a statement. Luxembourg Open: Sania and Durand Cup: Army Green enter quarters Zhang crashed out in quarter-finals
KO L K ATA , S E P 1 7 (IANS): Former champions Army Green beat I-league side Sudeva Delhi FC 1-0 to enter the quarterfinals of the 130th Durand Cup here on Friday. Deepak Singh, their two-goal hero from their 3-1 win against Jamshedpur FC (JFC) earlier in the tournament, was on target again to see the Greens through. The two sides clashed at the Mohun Bagan ground in the final game of Group B, with both of them as well as JFC, also playing their final game simultaneously against FC Goa at the Vivekananda Yuba Bharati Krirangan (VYBK), having a shot at the knockout stages. JFC, however, went down 0-5 in that game, allowing Army Green to go through along with group toppers FC Goa, who had three wins out of three. In the initial quarter of the first half, both Army Green and Sudeva created opportunities but it was all Greens after that. In the 9th minute, the Greens had their

Shubham Rana took another shot at goal on the rebound, but Sachin came up with another brilliant save. T h e b a l l h ove r e d around the Sudeva goal for most of the first half. Thirty minutes into the game, two back-to-back corners almost got the Greens on the board, but Sachin made sure it was
goalless at halftime. Sudeva looked all charged up in the second half, however. In the 46th minute, William Pauliankhum had the ball just a few yards away from the goal but failed to score. Army Green came back strong and in the 51st minute courtesy of a nice setup and a wonderful assist by Dip Mazumdar, Deepak tapped the ball into the net. The Delhi side did
have a few chances to equalize but they could not go past Army Green’s defense to end the campaign with three losses. In the day’s second game, FC Goa authored a dominating performance to blitz JFC 5-0 to finish on top with nine points and push their ISL rivals out of the 130th Durand Cup. It was an incident-free first quarter of an hour, with Goa keeping the likes of Glan Martins and
Makan Chote on the bench and giving Brandon a start along with a third keeper in the tournament in Hrithik Tiwari. They were looking to take control and eventually Devendra got a free header off a corner in the 20th minute and nodded home from close to give Goa their first of the game. Then six minutes later, Princeton Rebello got two bites of the cherry inside the JFC box and blasted the second one home past a hapless Vishal Yadav under the JFC bar. Murgaokar then tapped in a third, his second of the game and third of the tournament, a minute before a break to make it 3-0 for the Goans at halftime. The talented Muhammed Nemil then made the second half his own with a double strike. The IndoChinese pair, seeded second in the tournament, lost 3-6, 6-3, 10-8 in the quarter-finals to the unseeded Belgian team of Greet Minnen and Alison Van Uytvanck on Thursday. The match lasted 1 hour and 11 minutes, as per olympics.com. Sania Mirza is a six-time Grand Slam doubles champion while Shuai Zhang recently won her second Grand Slam title at the 2021 US Open, partnering Australia’s Samantha Stosur. Sania Mirza and Shuai Zhang had beaten the Morderger twins -- Tayisiya and Yana -- in straight sets in their opening round of 16 match on Wednesday. The duo seemed to have picked up right from where they left off in the last match and eased past the Belgians 6-3 in the opening set, courtesy a break point in

the sixth game. Another break point followed in the first game of the second set as Sania Mirza - Shuai Zhang looked favourites to wrap up the match in straight sets. Greet Minnen and Alison Van Uytvanck, however, mounted a fantastic comeback. Riding on backto-back break points in the second and fourth games, the Belgians roared back to win the second set and forced the decider. The tie-breaker was a nerve-wracking affair, with both teams going toe-to-toe till the score was 7-7. The
Belgians managed to break away at the crucial juncture to win the next two points. Facing a match point, Sania Mirza and Shuai Zhang managed to save one but eventually fell 10-8. Greet Minnen and Alison Van Uytvanck will now play the third-seeded Japanese pair of Eri Hozumi and Makoto Ninomiya in the Luxembourg Open semifinals. Since her first round exit at the Tokyo Olympics, the 34-year-old Sania Mirza exited the Cincinnati Open and the US Open in their respective opening rounds.
Fed up with injuries, Swapna mulls retirement Indian cricketers could take NEW DELHI, SEP 17 (PTI): Battling depression due to a nagging back injury, Asian Games gold medal winning athlete Swapna Barman has decided to call it quits, a formal announcement of which will be made in a few days. The decision comes less than 24 hours after Swapna, a North East Frontier Railway athlete, won a gold medal in high jump at the 60th National Open Athletics Championships in Warangal. “My body is not taking the toll anymore. Mentally, I’m very depressed and it’s not easy,” Swapna told PTI from Warangal. “I’m a bit confused, but I’ve mentally prepared 80-90 per cent to call it quits. I will make the ‘big’ announcement after reaching Kolkata. “I never wanted to par-

The lockdown triggered by the COVID-19 pandemic meant that Swapna could not take part in any competition in 2020 and while in 2021 she aimed for the Tokyo Games qualifying mark but again injuries and a second wave of the pandemic derailed all her plans. This year, she took part only in the Federation Cup and at the ongoing Open Nationals.
MACKAY, SEP 17 (IANS): Indian cricketers could take part in this year’s Women’s Big Bash League (WBBL) despite no current player having signed up for the league yet. The Indian team is currently in Mackay, preparing for the multi-format series against Australia with the first ODI from September 21. Previously, opener Shafali Verma and left-arm spinner Radha Yadav were strongly linked to have signed up with Sydney Sixers but nothing happened. “I know there’s been lots of exciting conversations going on (between clubs and India players). They’re such a popular team, and popular players in their own right, that if we were able to see some of those players in the WBBL
that’d be really exciting. All our clubs are having lots of conversation, so we’ll wait and see,” said Alistair Dobson, Cricket Australia’s General Manager of Big Bash Leagues to cricket. com.au. Harmanpreet Kaur (Syndey Thunder), Smriti Mandhana (Brisbane Heat and Hobart Hurricanes) and Veda Krishnamurthy (Hobart Hurricanes) were the Indian cricketers who featured in the tournament in previous seasons. it makes no difference. She wants to score goals.” Lloyd’s scoring outburst was reminiscent of the 2015 World Cup final, when she scored three goals in the first 16 minutes against Japan. She announced she plans to retire from soccer after the team’s four post-Olympic games. It was Lloyd’s first career five-goal game. She has nine career hat tricks, one fewer than Mia Hamm. The five goals matched the U.S. record for a single game, a milestone most recently reached by Alex Morgan against Thailand during the 2019 World Cup. No player has had six. Andi Sullivan scored 25th before Lynn Williams’ blast from distance in the 30th made it 4-0. Sullivan added a second goal early in the second half, before Lloyd’s fifth. Tobin Heath scored the final goal in the 86th. The United States is in the midst of a four-game post Olympics tour. The Americans won the bronze medal in Tokyo, a somewhat disappointing finish for the defending World Cup champions. It is the first time that the United States has faced Paraguay, which has never played in the Olympics or the World Cup.

NEW YORK, SEP 17 (AP): No Carli Lloyd isn’t reconsidering her retirement — even after a five-goal game. Lloyd hit a career high for goals in the U.S. national team’s 9-0 rout of Paraguay on Thursday night. The 39-year-old forward has just three more games with the team before she walks away from the game. “Maybe for a split second,” Lloyd said when asked if performances like that make her want to stick around. “And then I go back to reality.” Lloyd scored a pair of goals in the opening five minutes, and added her third and fourth before halftime as the United States built a 6-0 lead. She added her final goal in the 61st. Lloyd has 133 international goals in 313 appearances with the national team. She moved in front of Kristine Lilly for third on the career list. “She’s an absolute legend, just being on the field, she’s a threat, no matter who we play, when we play, where we play,” U.S. coach Vlatko Andonovski said. “Her mentality is something that’s unseen. She’s just hungry for scoring goals, just hungry to get better, and whether we play for a medal or we play Paraguay,

Europa League: Napoli hold Leicester, Lyon win
LONDON, SEP 17 (REUTERS): Striker Victor Osimhen scored a secondhalf brace as Napoli fought back to earn a 2-2 draw at Leicester City in a pulsating Europa League Group C clash on Thursday. Scottish champions Rangers suffered a 2-0 home defeat by Olympique Lyonnais in Group A after city rivals Celtic, the 1967 European Cup winners, were beaten 4-3 at Real Betis in the early kick-off in Group G. Ayoze Perez fired Leicester into a ninth-minute lead when he side-footed home a perfect Harvey Barnes cross and Leicester soaked up pressure with goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel making several fine saves before they doubled their lead. Napoli pressed but were caught cold in the 64th minute as Barnes took a defence-splitting pass by Kelechi Iheanacho in his stride and drilled a crisp low shot through keeper David Ospina’s legs. Nigerian Osimhen pulled one back five minutes later with a predator’s finish as he

Karl Toko Ekambi curled in a delightful shot from 25 metres to give Lyon the lead at Rangers and visiting keeper Anthony Lopes denied Joe Arbo an equaliser with a superb reflex save. Lyon sealed the win with a James Tavernier own goal as the ball ricocheted
off the defender after a frantic goal-mouth scramble in the 55th minute. In the other Group A match, Denmark’s Brondby were held to a 0-0 home draw by Slavia Prague. In Group B, 1988 European Cup winners PSV Eindhoven came from behind to force a 2-2 home draw with Real Sociedad and a Krepin
Pankaj defends Asian Snooker title
Legends CL being planned with former cricketers
NEW DELHI, SEP 17 (AGENCIES): India’s Pankaj Advani successfully defended the Asian Snooker Championship at the Al Messila, a luxury collection resort & spa, in Doha, Qatar on Thursday evening outplaying Amir Sarkhosh of Iran 6-3 (72-42, 72-0, 70-49, 41-66, 70-17, 30-68, 74-34, 12-50, 64-44) in the best of 11 frames final. According to The Indian Express, the 36-yearold triumphed in 2019 but in 2017 he was the runnerup. In 2019, Pankaj also became the only player who won the titles in all forms of billiards, snooker, 6Reds, and 10Reds competitions. Yasin Merchant (1989, 2001), Alok Kumar (2004), Aditya Mehta (2012) were the other Indians who won the championship. In 2018, Pankaj, a calendar grand slam winner and 23-time world champion, defeated the same Iranian rival 8-2 to win the 15-frame IBSF World Snooker Championship also in Doha. On Thursday’s final, Pankaj began with 50-plus break in the first (55) and second (50) but in the ninth and the final frame he posted 63 for a convincing win. For all his efforts, Pankaj also went home richer by $7,000. “I’m happy to de-

fend the title and pick up from where I left off before the onset of the (Covid-19) pandemic. The gap only increased the drive and hunger to compete and do well on return,” Pankaj was quoted by Indian news agency PTI. The 2020 edition was not held due to the pandemic. Earlier in the semifinals, the Indian legendary cueist overcame Cheung Ka Wai of Hong Kong 5-3 117(53)-9, 6517, 0-136(136), 42-88, 791, 0-113(113), 64(61)-37, 68-14 in the best of nine frames. Cheung set a record of sorts when his century score of 136 in the third frame surpassed the previous record of 126 by Alijalil Ali of Iraq. Amir, meanwhile, ended the hopes of Haris Tahir from Pakistan with an identical margin of 5-3 (112 (84)-11, 55-66,
80-0, 46-65, 63-25, 45-69, 66-17, 67-30). On Wednesday, in the quarterfinals, Pankaj who is based in Bengaluru brushed aside the challenge of Alijalil Ali 5-3 (11-64, 84-76, 12-70, 6432, 78-1, 80(64)-0, 54-68, 57-4) and in the pre-quarterfinals, Alijalil blanked Laxman Rawat, another Indian in the fray, 71-12, 66-44, 75-29, 72-61 while Pankaj showed the exit door to fancied Tam Yun Fung of Hong Kong 33-70, 90-01, 74-60, 119(80)-08, 13-65, 55-24. Earlier in the group matches, both the Indians pocketed a century break each. Laxman, a 2019 World 6Reds champion, in Group ‘F’ scored one against Omar Alajlani of Saudi Arabia while Pankaj had one against Ali Hussein of Iraq in the last Group ‘A’ match.
NEW DELHI, SEP 17 (PTI): Some former international cricketers, including Indians, will be in action in a T20 tournament called the Legends League Cricket to be held in March next year in the UAE, the event’s organisers stated on Friday. Although the organisers did not divulge details of the players who have signed up for the tourney, they claimed that the list includes some top former internationals from India, South Africa, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Australia, and England, among others. “The League would be played twice every year. In the first season, the league would be played in Tri-series format, with Indian team, Asian Team and a Rest of the World Team playing against each other. “This would mean six league stage matches before the final match,” they stated in a press release. Vivek Khushalani, cofounder and promoter, promised a grand show. “The brainstorming sessions gave us huge excitement, the thought of seeing Legends playing for team India once again gave a different high.
Academic & sporting excellence achievable: Suhas NEW DELHI, SEP 17 (IANS): Suhas Yathiraj lives by the philosophy of ‘sports helps you conquer your own self ’. And he lived by his own words by clinching a silver medal in badminton at the Tokyo Paralympics. Significantly, his achievement also helped break a common stereotype in India that does not equate sporting excellence with academics. Yathiraj is an officer in the Indian Administrative Service (IAS), having achieved success in one of the toughest examinations in the country at the very first attempt. It was only in 2015/16 that he turned into a professional para-badminton player and has since then been managing his duty as the District Magistrate of Gautam Buddha Nagar and his training as a sportsperson to good effect. “I think this (Tokyo Paralympics) medal was celebrated by everyone in the country. The amount of reception that we got in New Delhi airport (shows that),” Yathiraj told Olympics.com. “I think the myth that studies and sports can’t
Suhas Yathiraj
be pursued together has been broken. Many are surprised that a person can be good in both studies and sports. “Parents also want their children to be good in studies and sports. They look at studies as the more stable option. I think many of the youth can at least get the confidence to pursue both,” he added. The celebration at home around his achievement at the Paralympics medal also makes him believe that the Tokyo Olympics and Paralympics was a watershed moment for India as it helped to develop a sporting culture. “The amount of support, love that everyone is showing is great. There was
a time when celebrities in the country used to be film stars and only cricketers,” Yathiraj said. “But I think now, the Tokyo Olympics and Paralympics would be a watershed moment in the history of India, because of the amount of adulation and recognition the Olympians and Paralympians are getting. I think it’s definitely heart-warming,” he added. And badminton remains a spiritual experience for him. He, however, is extremely methodical in his approach towards the sport and likes to work on its crucial details. “Badminton is meditation for me. I am extremely methodical, I develop my
attack skills, defense skills, my reach. I work minutely on that part and also how I would cope up in the match. I visualize matches in my head. So yeah, I do have methods that give me comfort while playing,” Yathiraj explained. Moreover, he is not active on social media and stays away from it, in part because of his professional role and because he believes that it doesn’t add value to his life. “I am not at all a reserved person. Because of the administrative job that I hold, I have intentionally kept myself away from social media because I don’t see any value addition through it. I have always believed that we should not go behind fame or money or anything,” Yathiraj said. Yathiraj, 38, also considers the silver medal at Tokyo Paralympics will motivate him to go one better at Paris Paralympics in 2024. Yathiraj, who has an impairment to his ankle, overcame the challenges thrown at him to excel in badminton. And he has several international achievements to his name.
Diatta goal gave Monaco a 1-0 win over visiting Sturm Graz. Emerging talent Cody Gakpo salvaged a point for PSV after Adnan Januzaj and Alexander Isak cancelled out Mario Goetze’s opener for the home side in a see-saw contest. In Group D, Mesut Ozil gave Fenerbahce an early lead at Eintracht Frankfurt before Sam Lammers turned in a Filip Kostic cross to ensure a share of the spoils while Olympiakos Piraeus eked out a last-gasp 2-1 home win over Antwerp. Earlier on Thursday, goals from Michail Antonio and Declan Rice gave West Ham United a 2-0 Group H win at Dinamo Zagreb while 1991 European Cup winners Red Star Belgrade beat Portugal’s Braga 2-1 in Group F. Early goals from Albian Ajeti and Josip Juranovic gave Celtic a 2-0 lead at Betis but a Juanmi brace and goals by Juan Miranda and Borja Iglesias turned the match on its head before Anthony Ralston set up a tense finish.

Former players back Rohit to replace Kohli as T20 captain NEW DELHI, SEP 17 (AGENCIES): Opener Rohit Sharma has demonstrated his leadership qualities in the Indian Premier League (IPL) and is an obvious choice to succeed Virat Kohli as India’s Twenty20 captain, according to several former players. According to Supersport, Kohli, who has led India across formats, has decided to relinquish Twenty20 captaincy after the 20-overs World Cup scheduled in the United Arab Emirates and Oman from October 17. Kohli has a 27-14 win-loss ratio as India’s Twenty20 captain, while his Royal Challengers Bangalore team continue to chase their maiden IPL title. While the Indian cricket board is not in any hurry to name a successor now, Rohit, IPL’s most successful captain, is likely to be elevated as India’s Twenty20 skipper. For former India captain Dilip Vengsarkar, it is a

no-brainer. “Rohit deserves to be India’s next T20 captain because he has done well whenever he’s been given an opportunity to lead India,” Vengsarkar told Times of India newspaper on Friday. “In 2018, India won the Asia Cup under his captaincy. Beside that, he’s been an exceptional captain for the Mumbai Indians, having led them to five IPL titles.” Former player Sandeep Patil also backed IPL’s most successful captain for the job. “Rohit has proved his mettle,” Patil, part of India’s
1983 World Cup winning squad, told the same newspaper. Kohli cited his “immense” workload as the reason behind his decision but Indian cricket board president Sourav Ganguly said the decision was made “keeping in mind the future roadmap.” Former captain Sunil Gavaskar said while Rohit was the best man to lead in 20-overs cricket, India should groom KL Rahul, who leads Kings XI Punjab in IPL, as a future white-ball captain.
NZ abandon tour of Pakistan citing security threat This was New Zealand’s first tour of Pakistan in 18 years and the series was to comprise three ODIs and five T20 Internationals. New Zealand Cricket Players Association chief executive Heath Mills said the decision to withdraw is in the best interest of the players. “The players are in New Zealand’s Henry Nicholls and Tom Latham during good hands; they’re safe a practice session in Rawalpindi on Thursday. – and everyone’s acting in RAWALPINDI/NEW DELHI, SEP 17 (PTI/ AGENCIES): The New Zealand cricket team on Friday abandoned its ongoing tour of Pakistan before the start of the first ODI here, citing a security threat which the host board insisted did not exist while declaring the pull-out a unilateral move. Trouble began when the first ODI of the white ball series could not begin on time at the Rawalpindi stadium on Friday with both teams remaining in their hotel rooms. New Zealand Cricket chief executive David White eventually issued a statement to say that it was simply not possible to continue with the tour given the advice he was receiving from his government. “I understand this will be a blow for the PCB,
who have been wonderful hosts, but player safety is paramount and we believe this is the only responsible option,” he stated. The Pakistan Cricket Board, on its part, said that New Zealand had unilaterally decided to postpone the series. “Pakistan Cricket Board and Pakistan Government made foolproof security arrangements for all visiting teams. We have assured New Zealand Cricket of the same. “The Pakistan Prime Minister (Imran Khan) spoke personally to the Prime Minister of New Zealand (Jacinda Ardern) and informed her that we have one of the best intelligence systems in the world and that no security threat of any kind exists for the visiting team,” the PCB said in its statement.
Sharath named chairman of BCCI jr. selection panel NEW DELHI, SEP 17 (IANS): The Indian cricket board (BCCI) on Friday appointed the national junior selection committee with former Tamil Nadu batsman Sridharan Sharath as its chairman. While S. Sharath is the representative selector from South Zone, former Gujarat wicketkeeper-batsman Pathik Patel is the selector from West Zone and former Bengal medium-pacer Ranadeb Bose is from East Zone. Former Punjab batsman Krishan Mohan, who is now with Himachal Pradesh in coaching capacity, is the North Zone selector while ex-Madhya Pradesh pacer Harvinder Singh Sodhi is the selector from Central Zone. “Former Tamil Nadu captain Mr Sharath Sridharan will head the committee,” said a statement from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). The first cricketer to play 100 Ranji Trophy matches for Tamil Nadu, Sharath scored 8700 runs, including 27 centuries and 42 half-centuries in 139 first-class matches with an impressive average of 51.17, during his 15-year-long domestic career. He also played 116 List A games scoring 3366 runs. He has also been a BCCI match referee. The committee is as follows: 1. Sharath Sridharan (South Zone) - Chairman 2. Pathik Patel (West Zone) 3. Ranadeb Bose (East Zone) 4. Krishan Mohan (North Zone) 5. Harvinder Singh Sodhi (Central Zone)
their best interests,” Mills said. NZC also made it clear that it will not comment on the details of the security threat nor the updated arrangements for the departing squad. The PCB said that the security officials with the New Zealand team have been satisfied with the arrangements made by the hosts throughout their stay here.
‘NZ just killed Pakistan cricket’: Akhtar, Ramiz react to NZ abandoning Pak tour A report by Hindustan Times states that, Pakistan fast bowling legend Shoaib Akhtar came down hard on New Zealand Cricket’s decision to pull out of tour of Pakistan and said that they ‘killed’ Pakistan Cricket. NZC announced their decision to abandon the tour on Friday following a security alert issued by their government minutes before the toss of the first ODI between the two countries in Rawalpindi. Akhtar took to Twitter to react on NZC’s decision to pull out of the series. “NZ just killed Pakistan cricket,” he wrote with two angry-faced smileys. He went on to add: “Following points for New Zealand to remember: 9
Pakistanis were killed in the Christchurch attack. Pakistan stood strong with New Zealand. Pakistan toured New Zealand in the worst of Covid circumstances regardless of the crude treatment by NZ authorities on that tour. Meanwhile, newly-elected Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chairman Ramiz Raja also lashed out at New Zealand Cricket and said that they will take the matter to the ICC. “Crazy day it has been! Feel so sorry for the fans and our players. Walking out of the tour by taking a unilateral approach on a security threat is very frustrating. Especially when it’s not shared!! Which world is NZ living in??NZ will hear us at ICC,” Raja tweeted.

BELLARY (KARNATAKA), SEP 17 (IANS): Haryana boxer Sachin made a spectacular start to his campaign at the 5th Elite Men’s National Boxing Championships as he defeated World Championships bronze medalist Gaurav Bidhuri at the Inspire Institute of Sports in Bellary, Karnataka, on Friday. Meanwhile, Telangana’s Savio Dominic Michael (54kg) and Goa’s Ashok Patil (67kg) too progressed into the last-eight stage with identical 4-1 victories.
