She claimed that BJP was the only political party in the country to have 33% women representation in leadership and hoped that a time would come when Nagaland would have women representatives in the Assembly. Asked if BJP would field women candidates in the upcoming State Assembly election, Srinivasan re-
plied that State BJP Mahila Morcha president Phangnon Konyak affirmed that the party would field women candidates, provided they had desired qualities and calibre. She said the issue was discussed in party meetings too. “BJP is the only party that has given leadership role to women within the party and brought gender parity,” she added. Phangnon Konyak, who too addressed the media, remarked that this was a great opportunity for Naga women to come forward, adding that BJP was looking forward to put up women candidates. Asked if her visit was related to the upcoming elections, Srinivasan replied that visits of leaders was aimed at strengthening party base in the State. She said, apart from
strengthening the party, the aim of her visit was to interact with Mahila Morcha State office-bearers and encourage them. Srinivasan explained that her visit was part of an organisational tour and also to take part in the Mahila executive meeting. When asked about the opposition-less government in the State, the Mahila Morcha president remarked that the role of opposition was very important in democracy. She, however, mentioned that forming an opposition-less government was “purposeful”, pointing out that the elected representatives chose to come together as the “situation demanded” so. She said the situation was not in the hands of any political party. (Cont’d on p-8)

Meghalaya to facilitate goods train till Byrnihat: CM SHILLONG, NOV 18 (PTI): Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma said the state government will be engaging with all stakeholders to find a way forward for the introduction of goods train till Byrnihat in Khasi Hills region of the state. Several organisations in the Khasi Hills region of Meghalaya have been opposing the construction of the 20.5 km long TeteliaByrnihat railway line. The anti-railways groups have been protesting against the introduction of railways in the state in the absence of a foolproof mechanism to check influx of outsiders into the state. “We will be engaging with concerned stakeholders and at least find some way forward to get a goods train if not a passenger train immediately,” the chief minister told reporters on Wednesday. Sangma said the railway line issue is slightly complicated because it is linked with so many other factors with the different organizations demanding the implementation of the Inner Line Permit (ILP). “Our government and the Government of India is

many residents were falling ill with suspected symptoms of the disease, local leaders said that many were under home care. Vice-chair man of Chavangphai Administrative Committee Thangkhomang Khongsai said that poor families were avoiding hospitalization of their loved ones as they have no means to afford the medical cost. He said that most residents of the locality were falling ill and he drew attention of the district administration and state government to take up necessary measures to control the situation before it was too late. He observed that the ongoing fogging drive in the border town has no impact on controlling dengue causing mosquitoes. Manipur has a history of outbreak of dengue in recent years. However, for the current season, the outbreak of the disease was first reported in Imphal East district when a total of 22 persons from Chingmeirong area of the district were diagnosed with the disease in the last week of October. Few confirmed cases were also reported in six of 16 districts of the state. However, there were no reports of further spread of disease in these districts, except in Moreh town.

The chief minister said the state had witnessed during the COVID period that thousands of trucks coming in and there was a huge cost factor. “ I f we h ave t h e railways then we would have been able to get the goods at a much more economical rate and at the same we would not have the exposure to truck drivers coming in and going out - so all these factors are advantages,” he stated. When asked about the anti-railway groups’ protest against the project since Meghalaya does not have any mechanism to check influx, Sangma said the government is talking about goods trains and not the passenger train. “Obviously goods train means goods and products which will be for the people and that will help the people in general so there is no question of influx when it comes to goods train. “So can we have a meeting point where we can say at least the benefit of the goods can come to the common man and the citizens of the state, so maybe we could move in that while we discuss how we can check the infiltration

Meghalaya entered the railway map of India when the first passenger train linking Mendipathar in North Garo Hills district with Dudhnoi in Assam was flagged off by Prime Minister Narendra Modi via a video link from Railway Stadium at Maligaon, Assam on November 29, 2014. Of the total length of 19.75 km of the Mendipathar-Dudhnoi railway line, 10.26 km falls in Assam, and 9.49 km in Meghalaya’s North Garo Hills district. “In Mendipathar, we have already started the facilitation centre where if you go and see there is some kind of checking of individuals coming, so all those things are steps that are confidence building measures. “We are hopeful that we will be able to move this forward also as I said it is a complex issue but we are trying our best as I said we cannot resolve everything but I hope will be able to find some way forward especially when it comes to the goods train,” he added.

Banks, Modi said, need to shed the culture of they being an approver and the customer being an applicant, and adopt the model of partnership. “When the country is working so hard on financial inclusion, it is very important to unlock the productive potential of the citizens,” he said. Modi further said the reforms initiated by the government in the banking sector in the last six-seven years supported the banking sector in every way, due to which the sector is in a very strong position today. “We addressed the problem of NPAs, recapi-
talised banks and increased their strength. We brought reforms like Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code (IBC), reformed many laws and empowered Debt Recovery Tribunal,” he said. Modi also nudged bankers to offer “customised solutions” to businesses and micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs). “Don’t wait for customers to come to banks. You have to go to them,” he said, while assuring bankers that he will “stand by them like a wall” for every honest decision they take. Asking banks to move ahead with a “big thinking and innovative approach”, Modi said “we will become laggards if we delay adopting Fintech.” Setting a target for banks, he said by August 15, 2022, every bank branch should have at least 100 clients who conduct the entire business digitally. “Banking sector has to understand this that in India it is time for investing in ideas. It is time to support startups. Startup is an idea, there is no asset, it is just an idea. “You (banks) have no dearth of resources, data. The government will continue to do reforms, and
you (banks) have moved forward along with the nation’s commitment and target,” he said. The Prime Minister said steps taken in the recent years have created a strong capital base for the banks. Banks have sufficient liquidity and no backlog for provisioning of bad loans, while non-performing assets (NPAs) in public sector banks are at the lowest in the last five years. This has led to the upgrading of the outlook for the Indian banks by international agencies, he pointed out. The Prime Minister emphasised on the need to proactively serve the customers and asked banks to provide customised solutions to customers, companies and MSMEs after analysing their needs. He also praised the banking sector for its enthusiasm in implementing the Jan Dhan Scheme. The Prime Minister said banks should proactively get involved in the growth story. He gave the example of the Production Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme where the government is doing the same by giving Indian manufacturers an incentive on production.

NEW DELHI, NOV 18 (PTI): Congress leader Randeep Sur jewala on Thursday moved the Supreme Court challenging the Union government’s ordinances extending the tenures of Enforcement Directorate (ED) and Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) chiefs from two to up to five years. He has moved the plea against the Central Vigilance Commission (Amendment) Ordinance, 2021, and the Delhi Special Police Establishment (Amendment) Ordinance, 2021, of November 14 along with the Personnel Ministry’s November 15 notification amending the fundamental rules which enable the government to extend the tenures of ED, CBI chiefs, as also of the defence, home and foreign secretaries. These ordinances empower the Government of India to provide “piecemeal extensions” of one year each to the tenures of the directors of ED and CBI following the conclusion of the fixed terms provided in their statutes, Congress general secretary and chief spokesperson Surjewala claimed.
Narottam Mishra BHOPAL, NOV 18 (PTI): Madhya Pradesh Home Minister Narottam Mishra on Thursday said comedian Vir Das, who is facing police complaints over his monologue “I come from two Indias”, would not be allowed to perform in the state. Das, who is in the US right now, on Monday uploaded a six-minute video on YouTube titled “I come from two Indias”, which was a part of his recent performance at the John F Kennedy Centre in Washington DC. The Mumbai-based stand-up comic, who has also dabbled in cinema, had touched on various topics in the clip, including the farm protests, the battle against COVID-19, the duality in response to women, particularly rape, and the crackdown on comedians. “We won’t allow such
tenders an apology, we are going to think over it,” Mishra, who is also the MP government’s spokesman, told PTI when asked about the comedian’s monologue. Das, who has issued a statement saying his comments weren’t intended to insult the country, has found backing from TMC member Mahua Moitra as well as Congress leaders Kapil Sibal and Shashi Tharoor. Mishra said there are some jesters who try to “defame” India, and they have some supporters like Kapil Sibal and other Congress people. “Congress leader Rahul Gandhi also defames India on foreign land. MP Congress chief Kamal Nath also does it,” the minister alleged. “Such type of people like him, I call them ‘vidushak’ (jester) would not be allowed to perform in the state. If he (Das) apologises, we are going to think over it,” he said. Senior Congress leader Abhishek Manu Singhvi had criticised Das for “vilifying the nation” and actor Kangana Ranaut demand strict action against the comedian.

The battle of Rezang La began at around 4 am on November 18, 1962, and lasted till around 10 pm during which the ‘C’ company of 13th battalion of the Kumaon Regiment led by Major Shaitan Singh not only stood their ground but inflicted heavy casualties on the Chinese despite being outnumbered by the adversary. Major Singh was later posthumously conferred with Param Vir Chakra, India’s highest military deco-
ration. Defence Minister Singh also met Brig (retd) R B Jatar who was part of the battle of Rezang La. “I am overwhelmed by the feeling of respect for him and I salute his courage. May God keep them healthy and live long,” Singh said. The revamped war memorial has been thrown open at a time India and China have been locked in a bitter border row in eastern Ladakh for nearly one-andhalf years. the Indian and Chinese militaries erupted on May 5 last year following a violent clash in the Pangong lake areas and both sides gradually enhanced their deployment by rushing in tens of thousands of soldiers as well as heavy weaponry. The tension escalated following a deadly clash in Galwan Valley on June 15 last year. As a result of a series of military and diplomatic talks, the two sides completed the disengagement process in the north and south banks of the Pangong lake in February and in the Gogra area in August. The last round of military talks on October 10 ended in a stalemate following which both sides blamed each other for the impasse. In a strong statement after the 13th round of talks, the Indian Army said the “constructive suggestions” made by it at the negotiations were neither agreeable to the Chinese side nor could Beijing provide any “forward-looking” proposals.

LAHORE/DER BABA NANAK (GURDASPUR), NOV 18 (PTI): Punjab Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi along with some of his Cabinet ministers on Thursday offered prayers at the Gurdwara Darbar Sahib in Pakistan after travelling through the visa-free Kartarpur corridor that reopened for pilgrims after a gap of 20 months. The over four-km long Kartarpur corridor links Gurdwara Darbar Sahib in Pakistan’s Kartarpur, the final resting place of Sikhism founder Guru Nanak Dev, to Dera Baba Nanak shrine in Gurdaspur district. Pilgrimage to the gurdwara was suspended in March 2020 due to the Covid pandemic. Evacuee Trust Property Board spokesperson Amir Hashmi said in Lahore that besides the group led by Channi, a delegation of BJP leaders also visited the Gurdwara Darbar Sahib.
judicial inquiry, calls admin probe ‘unfair’
SRINAGAR, NOV 18 (PTI): The People’s Alliance for Gupkar Declaration on Thursday demanded a judicial probe into the Hyderpora encounter, saying the magisterial inquiry ordered by the Jammu and Kashmir administration to investigate the incident cannot be fair. “We will be writing to President Ram Nath Kovind this evening, seeking a credible probe into the Hyderpora incident. In our view, only a judicial probe can be credible and fair,” CPI(M) leader Mohammad Yousuf Tarigami told reporters. A controversy had erupted over the encounter held on Monday in Srinagar following conflicting claims about the two deceased civilians as their family members contested the police’s charge that they were “terror associates”, prompting demands by various parties for an impartial probe. NEW DELHI, NOV 18 (PTI): Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Thursday inaugurated a revamped war memorial in eastern Ladakh’s Rezang La, the site of an epic battle at an altitude of 18,000 feet where over 100 Indian troops inflicted heavy casualties on the Chinese military 59 years ago displaying indomitable grit and bravery. The battle of Rezang La is largely considered as the finest moment for the Indian Army in the IndiaChina war six decades ago. Paying his tributes to the fallen heroes, Singh described the monument as an example of the determination and indomitable courage displayed by the Indian Army that he said is not “only immortal in the pages of history, but also beats in our hearts”. The defence minister said the “battle of Rezang La is considered one of the 10 greatest and most challenging military conflicts in the world. “The historic battle of Rezang La, fought at an altitude of 18,000 feet, is difficult to imagine even today. any in India remain perplexed as to why the Congress obstinately continues to harp on secularism and liberal pluralism versus Hindutva and theocraticism or of many people and one nation versus one people and one nation. Even for those who profess to be “neutral” in an unnatural, worrisome polarised environment in India; the issue has been devalued. The beauty of India is its varied race and culture, each having their own uniqueness. A small globe of small nations is what India is. If there are small nations that make up one big nation, then it can only be but possible when all exist in harmony. The Congress has been claiming that it stands for India’s secularism and accused the BJP of communalism. A majority of India’s dominant Hindu community are religiously pluralistic as they worship different gods across the nation. The British left behind a country of many religions and races including the scars of partition. The India that remained after partition took the path of secularism because the Congress leaders such as Mahatma Gandhi, Jawaharlal Nehru etc stood for democracy as against theocracy of Muhammad Ali Jinnah and the Muslim League. Secularism in India had met many challenges especially since the rule of late Indira Gandhi, known as the ‘Iron Lady of India.’ The Congress had been using the issue of secularism versus communalism against the BJP far too often, in the hope of winning the support of Hindus and especially religious minorities. However, power politics meant that the niceties and ideology have no place in order to win elections. During 1980, Indira Gandhi had taken to appealing to the Hindu sentiment when she returned to power in 1980, partly to recover lost ground in the Hindi heartland. This had only benefitted the Jan Sangh(later BJP). It is a fact that the myth of Indian politics has been the idea that the Congress party stood for secularism. To understand the decline of secularism in India, it needs to be understood that the Congress party, at least since 1984, has actually not stood up for secularism. The gates of the Babri Masjid were unlocked during Rajiv Gandhi’s rule , to win over the sentiments of the majority community. The second consecutive drubbing that the Congress received at the hands of the BJP since 2014 is also a reflection of the people’s rejection of the party’s claim of standing for secularism. Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, (heir to Sonia) who resigned as Congress president in 2019, in all likelihood, will again be crowned as party chief next year. Instead of debating the policies of the BJP, Rahul chooses to attack Modi and this has always backfired. Even Rahul’s favourite political topic ‘ Our Idea Of India’ vis-a-vis the BJP’s idea has grown stale. People want maturity in leadership and not one who speaks like a chief guest invited at a function. The recent controversy about Slam Khurshid’s book Sunrise over Ayodhya: Nationhood in Our Times’ also reflects how the narrative of secularism versus communalism continues to be the dud bullet that the Congress has been using . Today the BJP has changed the topic and the order to- nationalism versus terrorism. A confused leadership and an organisation under siege within itself has blinded the Congress to many issues facing the nation. The party needs to see beyond its nose in order to address and provide coherency and consistency, if it is really serious about projecting itself as a relevant alternative.
DailyDevotion Winning into Freedom
If the Son makes you free, you shall be free indeed. —John 8:36
If there is even a trace of individual self-satisfaction left in us, it always says, “I can’t surrender,” or “I can’t be free.” But the spiritual part of our being never says “I can’t”; it simply soaks up everything around it. Our spirit hungers for more and more. It is the way we are built. We are designed with a great capacity for God, but sin, our own individuality, and wrong thinking keep us from getting to Him. God delivers us from sin— we have to deliver ourselves from our individuality. This means offering our natural life to God and sacrificing it to Him, so He may transform it into spiritual life through our obedience. God pays no attention to our natural individuality in the development of our spiritual life. His plan runs right through our natural life. We must see to it that we aid and assist God, and not stand against Him by saying, “I can’t do that.” God will not discipline us; we must discipline ourselves. God will not bring our “arguments…and every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ” (2 Corinthians 10:5)— we have to do it. Don’t say, “Oh, Lord, I suffer from wandering thoughts.” Don’tsuffer from wandering thoughts. Stop listening to the tyranny of your individual natural life and win freedom into the spiritual life. “If the Son makes you free….” Do not substitute Savior for Son in this passage. The Savior has set us free from sin, but this is the freedom that comes from being set free from myself by the Son. It is what Paul meant in Galatians 2:20when he said, “I have been crucified with Christ….” His individuality had been broken and his spirit had been united with his Lord; not just merged into Him, but made one with Him. “…you shall be free indeed”— free to the very core of your being; free from the inside to the outside. We tend to rely on our own energy, instead of being energized by the power that comes from identification with Jesus.

Post-mortem
Integrated farming systems: Climate adaptation solution A “whole-farm” approach or integrated farming systems that supplement traditional crops with farming vegetables, fruits, poultry or fish is re-emerging as a nature-based solution to boosting productivity in climate-stressed regions. New research from the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) in India’s eastern Himalayas, where farming is turning increasingly risky due to climatic uncertainty, has shown that productivity and income of farmers “improved substantially” when they adopted a pond-based integrated farming system (IFS). Small and marginal farmers in the area lack resources and are unable to adopt new, improved technologies, the report by a team of ICAR scientists says. A whole-farm approach or pond-based IFS, however, helped increase production, employment and income by generating a mix of enterprises based on rice, vegetables, fruits, fish, pigs and poultry. The ICAR study, conducted on 11 farm pond-based IFS models, covering 22.5 hectares of 150 farmers’ fields in the South Garo Hills district of Meghalaya, from 2009 to 2014, showed a substantial improvement in the farmer’s livelihoods. The integrated farming system adopted, tapped into on-farm resources and reduced dependence on external inputs such as fertilisers and pesticides. The study found that the net returns under an integrated system that included ponds, rice, vegetables and pigs were eight times higher than the nor-
mal farmer practice of growing a single crop. Agronomist Anup Das, principal scientist at the ICAR research complex for the northeast hill region in Agartala, and of the authors of the study, told MongabayIndia that earlier, farmers had a small farm pond in the humid tropical and subtropical areas of the region. They used the pond for growing a few fish, for irrigation during dry times and for domestic uses. “However, most of these ponds are either underutilised or not renovated over a long time,” or used for some other purpose, Das says. But scientific fish farming and multiple uses of water for growing vegetables, livestock and irrigation can enhance productivity, income and employment; as well as resilience against climate change, he says. The integrated farming approach provides year-round production, employment and income, reducing farming risks during climate uncertainty, he adds. In water-stressed areas, such as semi-arid areas, rainwater harvesting is a proven technology, says Das. In such areas adoption of IFS models comprising multipurpose trees, livestock especially goats, crops with low water requirements such as millets and pulses, and adoption of micro-irrigation with harvested water may be a solution, he suggests. Ponds could require an additional inner lining to make them more durable, Das suggests. IFS promotes farmers’ knowledge, and efficient recycling of on-farm resources; and reduces dependence on external resources, says Das. It suits
small and marginal farmers, but they could require some initial support for constructing ponds, livestock units, compost units, and an irrigation system. A second report by a team that includes scientists from IIT, Kharagpur, and Ramakrishna Mission in coastal West Bengal, which looked at viable and sustainable farming, says that IFS can enhance farm sustainability in stressed ecosystems. The study assessed the sustainability of an integrated farming system in 140 smallscale farms in the Sundarbans region, using an indicatorbased approach. Farmers on the highly sustainable farms effectively collected and used sweet water, produced on-farm biomass, and used sustainable farming practices. The sustainability was influenced by farm size and soil fertility, and nonfarm factors such as remittances from migrant family members. “Future research may explore how these farms may be used to achieve ‘strong’ agricultural sustainability in the coastal agroecosystems,” the report says. Although the report did not specifically address climate change, “it is very likely that IFS will enhance the resilience of farms against climatic stresses,” says Rupak Goswami, a scientist from Ramakrishna Mission and one of the authors of the study. In coastal regions, water bodies on farms are used to capture sweet (non-saline) water that can be used to irrigate crops during water stress, says Goswami. Land shaping is a popular technique followed by Sundarban’s farmers, with thoughtful excavation to col-
Kevikienyü Peseyie: A brief sketch of my father’s life
A
(2nd January 1936—31st October 2021)
few days before my father died, he told us, “My journey may end today, it has been a good and enjoyable journey”. For a man of few words, those were precious. He lived for a few more days after that day and it was fascinating. It was almost as if he was moving back and forth between two dimensions – heavenly and earthly; spiritual and material. But his whole life, at least to us, was fascinating to say the least. He was the third child of Dr. Üzielie Peseyie, who was one of the first medical Doctors among the Angamis, with the likes of Dr Khosa (father of J.B. Jasokie), Dr Sevilie Iralu, et al. His father died when he was 14 years old. In his own last days, my father vividly remembered how he saw his father die. Kevikienyü married my mother Mrs Meno Khate in the year 1967. The same year he had an accident in his Jeep where his left leg was amputated from just below the knee. For the next 54 years until 2021, every single day, he had to engage in the laborious exercise of putting on and off his artificial prosthetic leg. In 1991, he was given just a few hours to relinquish his government job because of the superannuation issue. This was one of the most crushing events in his life. In 1997 he was diagnosed with thyroid cancer. Since then, every year, we saw how the cancer spread to the lungs, liver, bones and other parts of the body. This was his life! Hard, harsh and cruel! But he preferred to say that it was “good and enjoyable!” And I believe it was. I had never heard him complain about his personal tragedy in my life. I have childhood memories of him playing hide-and-seek with us by hiding his detachable artificial leg under the curtain. We would see the artificial limb sticking out from behind the curtain and shout - “He’s hiding behind the curtain”, and pull away the curtain to find only the artificial limb. He had hopped off in one leg to another place to hide. He drove us to choir practices and tuitions and taught us how to drive. That limb gave him extra protection, he would say, when dogs came attacking. He epitomized resilience, the power of the human spirit to thrive and overcome. But above all, his is a story of God’s faithfulness and grace that shines through the hard, harsh and cruel realities of life. Ask and it will be Given. Kevikienyü’s mother Mrs Puno Meru Peseyie, spent the last 16 years of her life in the Pentecostal Faith Home in Kohima, devoting herself to a life of prayer 24/7. She died in 1998, a year after my father was diagnosed with cancer in 1997. I came to learn that my grandmother devoted much of her last year to praying for my dad’s cancer recovery. My own mother Mrs Meno Peseyie who is no less a prayer warrior is a great embodiment of sacrificial and eternal love of Christ. She had always prayed that my father would not experience the pain of cancer. Even though the cancer had spread everywhere including the bones, my father died peacefully without any pain. Jesus said, “Ask and it will be given”. They asked and it was given. Three Generations of Medical Doctors. My father often proudly narrated the story of how the late Dr Setu Liegise took care of
his father Dr Üzielie till his last day. Dr Setu came every day to their residence in Mission Compound to check on him and administer the medicine. One day his patient could not swallow three tablets. Dr Setu went away very sad that day. And a few hours later Dr Üzielie died. Then later Dr Setu Liegise’s son, Dr Puse Liegise became his son-in-law and very able doctor. From day one of the cancer diagnosis till the end, Dr Puse Liegise had personally monitored and approved every single decision taken and every single medicine administered. And in the final years, Dr Puse’s son, Dr Visede Liegise, finished his medical studies and came and cared for his grandfather, holding his body as he died. What an honor to be served by three generations of medical doctors from the Liegise family. This testimony of generational faithfulness and blessings will echo in eternity. Divine Calling. Office-Altars. Bribes. My father loved his profession. His office desk was his Altar where he worshipped God. That was his sacred space. For most of his service in the Government, he was placed in positions that invited a lot of bribes and favors from job-seekers and other companies. But he never compromised, at least to our knowledge. How he often shouted at those offering him bribes and favors was often an embarrassment at our home. As a young Bible College graduate, I often had to do the “dirty work” of returning “gifts, bribes” and bundles of cash back to those who had offered them. I remember how he shouted in foul and crude language at a person who had brought some “gifts”, or another time how he pushed away a man with a briefcase of cash down to our residence gate. He was rude and harsh. He was violent at times. Once after a Sunday church service where I preached, a fine gentleman of the church told me, “Good, Kedo, you are not like your father.” When I heard that I felt like a failure, and I said in my mind, “What the Hell! Billions of bloody blue blistering barnacles! (Don’t worry, no one heard me say that). In a society that had become so corrupted and numb and feeling sexy about it, perhaps this is what integrity and purity will look like – violent, rude and socially awkward. I want to be like my father when I finally grow up. On the Edge of Eternity. My father did not often talk about his faith openly. But he lived out his faith well. His assurance of salvation and hope was exemplary. During his last days, he could not swallow food, but he would often say, “there is plenty of food where Jesus is”, and “I am going to the place where there is no more hunger”. And he kept saying, “I am not afraid to go, Jesus is with me”. At one point he even asked my Mum, “Do I have both my legs working well now?” This reminded me of what Joni Erickson Tada said (the lady who was paralyzed from waist below), “The first thing I will do with my resurrected legs is to fall down on my knees in worship”. This is hope of the New Heaven and the New Earth, where we will together enjoy the material Earth recreated, and our resurrected physical bodies perfectly restored. My father is now resting in peace. He will rise in glory. We rejoice in Christ. And we wait in hope. Kedo Peseyie Lower Bayavu Hill, Kohima
lect water and enhance farm resilience and income. “Also, the high biodiversity in IFS mitigates climate risks,” says Goswami. The basic principles of integrated farming will work in both coastal and waterstressed areas, but the details would be different. In dry regions, livestock would enhance incomes, whereas, in coastal regions, water bodies help. “Our hypothesis (not examined in this paper) is that ‘integration’ in IFS is a manifestation of adaptation against external drivers, including climatic stress, and it is not necessary that it works in water affluent regions,” says Goswami. Goswami sees integrated farming as “multifunctional farming that also builds resilience against climatic challenges.” IFS is an evolved system, it adapts to climate change, market forces and many other bio-physical stresses, he says. While scientists have developed IFS models for different agroclimatic zones in India, their adoption has been problematic. “Promoting IFS as models may not work as such. It needs to be designed and crafted in participation with farmers,” says Goswami. Rekindled interest in integrated farming The attempts to find sustainable, nature-based solutions have intensified with the start of the UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration, beginning 2021. Researchers have created a guide for designing agricultural development projects that use solutions from nature. A report in Frontiers in Environmental Science, in August 2021, says that nature-based solutions
(NBS) “are at the forefront of the sustainability discourse” in this decade. These solutions are applied more frequently in urban, natural forest or wetland ecosystems, but are “underutilised in agricultural landscapes,” it says. The authors have proposed a technical framework to characterise NBS in agricultural systems, envisaged as “the use of natural processes or elements to improve ecosystem functions of environments and landscapes affected by agricultural practices, and to enhance livelihoods and other social and cultural functions, over various temporal and spatial scales.” The framework establishes four essential functions for NBS in agriculture: sustainable practices with a focus on production; green infrastructure, mainly for engineering purposes such as water and soil, and slope stabilisation; amelioration for restoration of conditions for plants, water, soil or air and climate change mitigation; and conservation with a focus on biodiversity and ecosystem connectivity. India is making some efforts on this front. For example, under the Revitalising Rainfed Agriculture Network (RRA Network) in India, has initiated integrated farming under a project in tribal areas of Odisha, which integrates the best practices of agriculture, livestock and fisheries. India’s efforts are in line with other countries’ attempts to improve productivity sustainably. For example, Chinese farmers are using ‘mulberry plot fish ponds’ in which combines fish farm-
ing with mulberry cultivation and sericulture. Here, mud or humus from fish ponds serves as nutrients for mulberry trees, and excreta from fish ponds as fertiliser. Similarly, in Kenya, simple farm ponds have helped small farmers in the drylands have helped them set up tree nurseries under a Drylands Development Programme under the World Agroforestry Centre, Nairobi. That said, the concept of integrated farming should not be limited to simply a mixture of rice and fish farming and growing vegetables, points out agricultural economist Rajeswari Raina, professor at Shiv Nadar’s University’s school of social sciences and humanities. The IFS is also evaluated solely in terms of increased production and income. “We need a different set of indicators,” says Raina. For example, productivity should be evaluated not just as yield per hectare, but also yield per hectare per cubic mm of water used, which presents the true picture of efficacy. Traditional knowledge systems have different methods of assessment, including traditional consumption patterns and food cultures, she adds. For example, women farmers in Andhra Pradesh assess grain not just by weight, but whether the grain is bolder, more full and of quality. The government should also divert part of funds spent on agriculture subsidies for chemical fertilisers towards IFS, Raina suggests. “We need public investment in IFS.” T.V Padma (As published on Mongabay India)

FAQs on COVID-19 vaccine
hy is vaccination not provided to children who are usual target? COVID-19 affects all age groups, however, the morbidity & mortality is several times higher in adults particularly in those above the age of 50 years. Children are either asymptomatic or have mild infection. The general practice is to first evaluate any new vaccine in older population and then age reduction is done to assess the safety and effectiveness in paediatric population. The currently available vaccines in the country have not been evaluated in children so far. There are some clinical trials now underway to test the effectiveness and safety of the COVID 19 vaccines in children. Developing a vaccine takes years. But this time our scientists have developed a vaccine against the novel corona virus in such a short time. How was this possible? Developing a vaccine generally involves years of research. First, we need a vaccine candidate that is evaluated in animals for its safety and efficacy. After a vaccine candidate passes a pre-clinical trial, it enters the clinical trial phase. While scientists have worked round the clock in the laboratory, even regulatory approvals which used to take several months have been fasttracked. It helped eliminate all the time lapses between the preclinical and clinical trial stages. Earlier, the vaccine development involved a series of steps, but in the case of the coronavirus vaccine, the scientists and regulators worked in tandem, accelerating the whole process without compromises on any protocols and any step. How long I will remain protected after vaccination? The longevity of the immune response in vaccinated individuals is yet to be determined. Hence, continuing the use of masks, handwashing, maintaining physical distance and other COVID-19 appropriate behaviours is strongly recommended. D o e s va c c i n a t i o n protect me against newer strains / mutated virus of SARS-CoV2? The body responds to
vaccination by making more than one type of antibodies to virus parts including spike protein. Therefore, all vaccines are expected to provide reasonable amount of protection against the mutated virus also. Based on the available data, the mutations as reported are unlikely to make the vaccine ineffective. Which vaccine is better between Covishield® / Covaxin®/Sputnik V? There is no head-tohead comparison done between the vaccines being used in India, so one cannot choose one over another. All vaccines would work well in preventing the infection as well as prevent a person from going into severe state of the disease. As a longterm effect, it would be preventing death for elderly people or those who have comorbidities. In how many days will the vaccination create an adequate immune response and protection? A d e q u a t e i m mu n e response takes 2-3 weeks after completion of entire vaccination schedule i.e., after the second dose of COVISHIELD®, COVAXIN®, SPUTNIK V. Does this vaccine provide herd immunity? When an increasing number of people get vaccinated in the community, indirect protection through herd immunity develops. The percentage of people who need to be immune in order to achieve herd immunity varies with each disease. For example, its 95% for measles, however, the proportion of the population that must be vaccinated against COVID-19 to begin inducing herd immunity is not known. Which drug should be taken to minimize the adverse effects of this vaccine? In case of minor adverse effects such as injection site pain, tenderness, malaise, pyrexia, etc., paracetamol tablet may be used to alleviate the symptoms. Claims on social media suggested that COVID-19 vaccine could affect female fertility. Is it true? Rumours or social media posts suggesting that COVID-19 vaccines could cause infertility are not true and totally baseless. Such rumours were floated in the past against other vac-
cines too for e.g. polio and measles. None of the available vaccines affects fertility. All vaccines and their constituents are tested first on animals and later in humans to assess if they have any such side effects. Vaccines are authorized for use only after their safety and efficacy is assured. If I suffer from HTN/ DM/CKD/heart disease/ lipid disorders etc., can I safely take this vaccine? Overall, the vaccine is safe and efficacious in adults with co-morbidity. The maximum benefit of getting the COVID vaccine is for those who have such co-morbidities. However, if you are concerned for any specific reason, please consult your doctor. What medications should be avoided before taking COVID-19 vaccine and for how long? A person receiving aspirin, clopidogrel (both of these are anti-platelet agents) or other anticoagulants: The dose of that day should be taken after the vaccination. Patients on Vitamin K antagonist (VKA) should have an International Normalized Ratio (INR) less than 3 before administration of the vaccine. In all cases, application of firm pressure at the injection site for at least 5 minutes after the injection may be done to reduce the risk of haematoma formation. I had COVID infection and was treated, why should I receive vaccine? Development of immunity or duration of protection after COVID-19 exposure is not established therefore it is recommended to receive vaccine even after COVID-19 infection. Individuals who are yet to receive COVID vaccine or Persons having laboratory test proven SARS-CoV-2 illness should defer the COVID 19 vaccination till 12 weeks after recovery. Individuals who have received at least the first dose and develop SARS-CoV-2 infection before completion of the dosing schedule should wait for 12 weeks after clinical recovery from the COVID illness. quashes skin-to-skin verdict of Bombay HC China constructs new villages near Doklam SCTouching child’s body parts with ‘sexual intent’ Cong questions PM’s silence on ‘Chinese’ amounts to ‘sexual assault’ under POCSO Act: SC villages coming up near Dokalam plateau
Aerial images of four villages constructed near Doklam.
NEW DELHI, NOV 18 (IANS/PTI): China has constructed new villages in Bhutan territory near Doklam in the last one year, new satellite images have revealed. The images show that four villages were built by China’s People’s Liberation Army (PLA) in about 100 sq.km. area between May 2020 and November 2021. It seems that construction started at the same time when the PLA had ingressed into Indian territory at multiple locations in eastern Ladakh and the Sikkim sector. The Doklam plateau was in the limelight
in 2017 when the Indian Army and the China’s PLA were locked in the stand-off for over 70 days. The Chinese had to retreat from the area after the Indian troops contested the plateau. Doklam is an area of 100 sq.km comprising a plateau and a valley at the tri-junction between India, China and Bhutan. It is circled by the Chumbi Valley of Tibet, Bhutan’s Ha Valley and India’s Sikkim. In 2017, China was making infrastructural development work at Doklam to which India objected. China then claimed that there was boundary
dispute between Bhutan and China and to which India had no claims. However, India refuted and stood there matching the deployment of the Chinese troops for 73 days. Last month, China and Bhutan signed a pact on a three-step roadmap to resolve their boundary disputes. In response, India said that “it has noted the development”. Boundary negotiations between Bhutan and China began in 1984 and the two sides have held 24 rounds of boundary talks and 10 rounds of meeting at the expert group level.
The Congress accused the BJP-led government on Thursday of compromising national security and India’s territorial integrity, and questioned Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s silence on new Chinese villages coming up near the Dokalam plateau. Congress spokesperson Gourav Vallabh said latest satellite images show that China has built four villages in Bhutan, next to Dokalam, and has grabbed 100 square kilometres of land in the area through illegal incursions. “Why are we tolerating this all-round aggression from China and doing absolutely nothing about it? We urge the prime minister not to hide behind smokescreens and answer to the people,” he said at a press conference here. “The Modi government’s unpardonable, blatant and brazen compromise of national security and India’s territorial integrity stands exposed once again. The prime minister and the defence minister have undermined the astounding valour and insurmountable grit of our armed forces, who faced the Chinese incursions and aggressions with indomitable courage and sacrifice,” Vallabh said. Congress general secretary and chief spokesperson Randeep Surjewala also shared the satellite images on Twitter and said, “100 Square KMs of ‘land grab’ and illegal incursion and setting four new villages by China in Bhutan, next to Doklam is a blow to India’s national security. This happened between May-Nov 2021.” “Why is PM ‘mum’? Who will defend National Security?” he asked. Vallabh said the new satellite images on Chinese military development show the purported construction of Chinese villages in Bhutanese territory over the last year. These new villages lie near the Dokalam plateau where India and China had a face-off in 2017, after which the neighbouring country bypassed Indian defences to resume road construction activity in the region, he said.
NEW DELHI, NOV 18 (PTI): Touching sexual parts of a child’s body or any act involving physical contact with ‘sexual intent’ amounts to ‘sexual assault’ under Section 7 of the POCSO Act as the most important ingredient is sexual intent and not skin-to-skin contact, the Supreme Court said on Thursday. Quashing the controversial ‘skin-to-skin’ judgements of the Bombay High Court in two cases under the POCSO Act, the apex court said the high court erred in holding that there was no offence since there was no direct physical “skin to skin” contact with sexual intent. The high court had held that no offence of sexual assault under the POCSO Act was made out if there was no direct skin-to-skin contact between an accused and victim. The POCSO Act defines sexual assault as when someone “with sexual intent touches the vagina, penis, anus or breast of the child or makes the child touch the vagina, penis, anus or breast of such person or any other
person, or does any other act with sexual intent which involves physical contact without penetration is said to commit sexual assault”. The apex court said the act of touching any sexual part of the body of a child with “sexual intent or any other act” involving physical contact with sexual intent, could not be trivialised or held insignificant or peripheral so as to exclude such act from the purview of “sexual assault” under Section 7 of the POCSO Act. “The word ‘Touch’ has been used specifically with regard to the sexual parts of the body, whereas the word ‘physical contact’ has been used for any other act. Therefore, the act of touching the sexual part of body or any other act involving physical contact, if done with ‘sexual intent’ would amount to ‘sexual assault’ within the meaning of Section 7 of the POCSO Act,” the top court said in its 53page judgment said. A three-judge bench headed by Justice U U Lalit said any narrow and pedan-
tic interpretation of the provision which would defeat the object of the provision, cannot be accepted. “Restricting the interpretation of the words ‘touch’ or ‘physical contact’ to ‘skin to skin contact’ would not only be a narrow and pedantic interpretation of the provision contained in Section 7 of the POCSO Act, but it would lead to an absurd interpretation of the said provision. “Skin to skin contact” for constituting an offence of “sexual assault” could not have been intended or contemplated by the Legislature,” said Justice Bela M Trivedi, who wrote the judgement on her and Justice Lalit’s behalf. Justice Bhat, who wrote a separate concurring judgment, said Section 7 of POCSO has to be viewed having regard to the mischief rule, the background and history leading up to the enactment of the legislation. “The reasoning in the high court’s judgment quite insensitively trivializes - indeed legitimizes an entire range of unacceptable behaviour which undermines a child’s dignity and autonomy, through unwanted intrusions.

That’s why I am requesting again the Union environment minister to call a joint meeting of environment minister from NCR states and make a joint action plan. Responsibilities of each state should be fixed to implement that plan and reduce pollution,” Rai said. He also alleged that construction activities are going unabated in surrounding areas of Delhi, which is further worsening the air.

Calls EVMs ‘evil, vicious machines’
ISLAMABAD, NOV 18 (PTI): Pakistan’s Leader of the Opposition and PML-N President Shehbaz Sharif has described the electronic voting machines as “evil and vicious”, slamming a “fascist government” led by Prime Minister Imran Khan for introducing a system aimed at rigging the next general elections. Addressing a joint session of parliament, Opposition Leader of the National Assembly Sharif said the government and its allies wanted to bulldoze important bills on electoral reforms, terming it “illegal” and against the traditions of parliament. Sharif, President of the Pakistan Muslim League (Nawaz) said that there are always allegations of rigging during the elections but this is the first time in history

that there are allegations of rigging before the polls. The “selected government” wanted to introduce the electronic voting machines (EVMs) because it can no longer ask the people for votes, the younger brother of former prime minister Nawaz Sharif was quoted as saying by The Nation newspaper. Terming the EVMs “evil and vicious machines”, the former chief minister of Punjab province said a system was being introduced by the government to further its agenda to rig the next general elections. The general elections are scheduled to be held in Pakistan in 2023. “Never has Pakistan
Pak Parl approves chemical castration of habitual rapists
ISLAMABAD, NOV 18 (PTI): Sex offenders convicted of multiple rapes in Pakistan could face chemical castration after Parliament passed a new legislation that aims to speed up convictions and impose tougher sentences. The bill is a response to a public outcry against a recent spike in incidents of rape of women and children in the country and growing demands for effectively curbing the crime. The passage of the bill comes almost a year after President Arif Alvi approved the new antirape ordinance that was cleared by the Pakistan Cabinet, calling for the chemical castration of rapists with the consent of the convict and setting up of special courts for speedy trails. The Criminal Law (Amendment) Bill 2021 bill was passed along with 33 other bills by the joint session of parliament on Wednesday. It seeks to amend the Pakistan Penal Code, 1860, and the Code of Criminal Procedure,
1898, the Dawn newspaper reported. “Chemical castration is a process duly notified by rules framed by the prime minister, whereby a person is rendered incapable of performing sexual intercourse for any period of his life, as may be determined by the court through administration of drugs which shall be conducted through a notified medical board,” according to the bill. Jamaat-i-Islami Senator Mushtaq Ahmed protested over the bill and termed it un-Islamic and against Sharia. He said a rapist should be hanged publicly, but there was no mention of castration in Sharia. Chemical castration is the use of drugs to reduce sexual activity. It is a legal form of punishment in countries including South Korea, Poland, the Czech Republic and in some states in the US, according to media reports. Critics say fewer than 4 per cent of sexual assault or rape cases in Pakistan result in a conviction.
seen such a fascist government… How can these thieves be expected to conduct transparent elections?” The Friday Times quoted him as saying. Sharif also asked Speaker Asad Qaiser to defer the joint session so “comprehensive consultation” could take place on the matter of electoral reforms. “If you allow this black law to pass, Pakistan will suffer a great deal, and you will be responsible for it,” he told the Speaker. In response to Sharif ’s speech, Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi said the government did not want to introduce any “black law”, but was trying to undo the black laws introduced by the previous governments. He said there have been no general elections in Pakistan where rigging allegations were not made. “But the question is, when will we learn from history and correct the course,” he said, adding that it was time to introduce a fair system.

AzerbaijanArmenia clashes report casualties
BAKU/YEREVAN, NOV 18 (IANS): Azerbaijan and Armenia have separately announced that soldiers have died in clashes that broke out along the countries’ border. In a statement on Wednesday, Azerbaijan’s Defence Ministry said that seven soldiers were killed, and 10 others wounded in the clashes on Tuesday, reports Xinhua news agency. Meanwhile, the Armenian Defence Ministry said one soldier was killed, and 24 others were reportedly missing in the clashes, adding that troops were captured by Azerbaijani forces. Two Armenian military positions were taken by the Azerbaijani side, it further claimed. Both sides have accused each other of launching provocative attacks. Hours after the clashes, the two countries reached a Russia-brokered ceasefire agreement. Both confirmed on Wednesday that the clashes had stopped, and that the border situation was stable since the ceasefire.

On Wednesday, Secretary of State Antony Blinken asserted that the United States will not waiver in its commitment to advocate for freedom of religion or belief for all and in every country and said the challenges to religious freedom in the world today are structural, systemic, and deeply entrenched. “They exist in every country. They demand sustained global commitment from all who are unwilling to accept hatred, intolerance, and persecution as the status quo. They require the international community’s urgent attention,” he said. Refuting Blinken’s comments, Zhao said the US should do soul searching and stop using religious issues to interfere in other countries. “The spread of Islamophobia and other extremist ideologies in the US has caused a great deal of tragedy. Instead of doing some soul searching, the US frequently used religious issues to interfere in other countries internal affairs,” he said.

The US on Wednesday designated several nations, including China, Pakistan, Iran, Nor th Korea and Myanmar, as “countries of particular concern for having engaged in or tolerated systematic, ongoing, and egregious violations of religious freedom.” China firmly opposes groundless accusations as it smears the country’s religious freedom, Foreign Ministry spokesman Zhao Lijian told the media here. Vizo, in a brief speech said it was a great joy and pride for the parish and the Diocese as the music video was screened worldwide. He congratulated the crew behind the music video and said that the theme of the global event
was interesting and also touching as the world was living in despair and fear following the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic. He said that the younger generation had been psychologically impacted as the pandemic
had forced the world into a series of lockdowns. Vizo added that the challenges faced by the younger generation was something totally different which also made the elders unable to comprehend. In this regard, he
urged young people not to be afraid as there was still hope in the world. He advised the youth to remain natural and focused in the midst of all the confusion. As DBGYFF provided an opportunity for people between 18-30 years, he said that this period in life was a crucial phase. He therefore advised the youth to live life productively. Meanwhile, Thenupfü Rüli, which roughly translates as “Plight of a Mother” in Tenyidie language, was among 110 entries shortlisted for screening out of 1686 entries in different categories from 114 countries. It is also the only entry to be selected for screening out of 13 entries from the Salesian province of Dimapur that covers Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, Nagaland and Upper Assam. The best exercises for heart health
W
• Playing soccer • Hiking uphill It’s also OK to do a mix of moderate and vigorous-intensity aerobics during the week if you prefer. As a rule of thumb, one minute of vigorous-intensity exercise is about equal to two minutes of moderate-intensity aerobics. Don’t feel pressure to push yourself too hard, though. If you want to meet your weekly aerobics requirements strictly from walking, that’s perfectly fine. Walking is a great low-impact exercise that will give you all of the health benefits of a more intense workout, without overexerting yourself. Strength training Strength training (sometimes called resistance training) is another great way to improve your heart health. When combined with aerobics, strength training will help to raise good cholesterol and lower bad cholesterol. It can also reduce your risk of having a heart attack or stroke. Both the CDC and the American Heart Association Trusted Source suggest you
participate in strength training exercises at least twice a week (on nonconsecutive days). Ideally, these strength training sessions should work all of your major muscle groups: arms, legs, hips, chest, shoulders, abs, and back. Although this might sound intimidating, it’s far from the weightlifting and bodybuilding you see on TV. Some examples of strength training exercise include: • Lifting free weights • Using resistance bands • Doing pushups • Doing situps • Doing squats Strength training exercises should be done in sets. Each set should consist of 8 to 12 repetitions, or until it becomes difficult for you to perform another repetition without help. Flexibility Although they may not influence your heart health directly, flexibility and stretching exercises can contribute a lot to your workout. Activities like yoga, tai chi, and Pilates will not only improve your flexibility and balance, but also decrease your chances of getting cramps, joint aches, and muscle pain while working out. Flexibility exercises make it easier to do the other types of physical activities that are necessary for a healthy heart. The great thing about flexibility training is that you can do it anytime, anywhere. Whether it’s warming up before a workout, taking a hot yoga class, or just doing some stretches in your living room, improving your flexibility is always a good idea if you’re serious about heart health. For more information about the exercises to keep your heart healthy, consult (Marina Basina, M.D.) your doctor.

hen considering the benefits of exercising, losing weight and “getting ripped” might be the first things to come to mind. But there’s a benefit that is way more crucial: keeping a healthy heart. Your heart is the most important muscle in your body, so it deserves some attention too, right? Let’s take a look at some of the best exercises to keep your heart strong and reduce your risk of heart disease and stroke. Aerobics Aerobic exercises, also known as cardio, are designed to raise your heart rate and make you break a sweat. Aerobics help to improve your circulation and lower your blood pressure. If you have diabetes, they can also help you control your blood sugar level. The Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)Trusted Source recommends that every adult should get at least two hours and 30 minutes of moderateintensity aerobic exercise a week, at intervals of 10 minutes or more. Some examples of moderate-intensity aerobics are: • Going for a brisk walk • Biking on flat terrain • Taking a leisurely swim • Gardening • Dancing If you’re big on working out but short on time, you can meet the CDC’s guidelines with one hour and 15 minutes of vigorousintensity aerobic exercise. These strenuous workouts are meant to get you breathing hard and increase your heart rate significantly. Examples of vigorous-intensity aerobics include: • Jogging • Biking 10 mph or faster • Swimming laps

WTA doubts Shuai’s email denying sexual allegations
NEW DELHI, NOV 18 (IANS): Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) Chairman and CEO, Steve Simon has raised doubts on an email released by Chinese state media attributed to tennis player Peng Shuai in which she purportedly denies allegations she made about being sexually assaulted by a former top politician of her country. Peng, a doubles champion at Wimbledon and
the French Open, accused China’s former Vice Premier Zhang Gaoli of sexual assault. Now in a fresh mail that appeared in the Chinese media, Peng purportedly says the allegations are “not true”. Steve Simon, chairman of the WTA, said the message “only raises” his concerns about Peng’s safety. “I have a hard time believing that Peng Shuai actually wrote the email we

Labour System Qatar’s hosting of the World Cup has been controversial. As recently as April last year, organisers strongly denied allegations from the U.S. Department of Justice that bribes were paid to secure votes when the hosting rights were awarded in 2010. The feasibility of playing a tournament in the searing Middle Eastern summer heat led to the event being shunted out of its traditional timeslot and played later in the year, while Qatar’s labour system has been strongly criticised. The government of Qatar said on Tuesday its labour system is still a work in progress but denied accusations in a report by Amnesty International that thousands of migrant workers were being exploited. A 48-page report by Amnesty, Reality Check 2021, said that practices such as withholding salaries and charging workers to change jobs were still rife. Qatar’s Government Communication Office rejected the allegations.

L O N D O N, N OV 1 8 (AGENCIES): Novak Djokovic, the world number one ranked men’s player, has reiterated his stand about freedom of choice over taking the COVID-19 vaccine as suspense grows over his participation at the Australian Open in January. Serbian Djokovic has repeatedly declined to disclose his vaccination status and said last month that he was unsure if he would defend his title at Melbourne Park, “things being as they are”. Government officials of the state of Victoria, where the major takes place in Melbourne, have said unvaccinated players will be barred from the tournament. Tennis maverick Nick Kyrgios said on his podcast this week that he was “double-vaxxed” but did not think it was right to force anyone, let alone athletes, to get vaccinated. LUSAIL, NOV 18 (AGENCIES): Sunday marks the point where it is one year to go until the opening match of the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, with the tournament, played for the first time in a northern hemisphere winter, rapidly taking shape. The opening match will take place on Nov. 21 in the 60,000 capacity Al Bayt Stadium. Kickoff will no doubt come as some relief to organisers as the football takes centre stage, shifting the limelight away from the numerous off-pitch issues, such as labour rights for migrant workers, that have surrounded the event. Given Qatar is the smallest country in size (11,600 km2) to host a World Cup, and, as all the stadiums are situated in and around the capital Doha, supporters can attend multiple games on the same day. Fans around the globe watching on TV can tune in to an unprecedented four back-to-back matches in one day. Indonesia Masters: Prannoy, Sindhu, Srikanth advance to quarterfinals
BALI (INDONESIA), NOV 18 (IANS): Ace Indian shuttlers PV Sindhu, Kidambi Srikanth and HS Prannoy advanced to the quarterfinals of the 2021 Indonesia Masters badminton tournament after registering hard-fought victories in their respective events, here on Thursday. Pulling the biggest upset of the day, the 2014 Indonesia Masters winner Prannoy beat Tokyo Olympics gold medallist Viktor Axelsen of Denmark 1421, 21-19, 21-16 in an intense one hour 11 minutes men’s singles second round match. Down and out in the first game, the Indian shuttler made a stunning comeback to defeat the World no 2. It was Prannoy’s first victory in six attempts against Axelsen. He will now face compatriot and former world No 1 Kidambi Srikanth in the quarterfinals. Former World no.1 Srikanth also came from a game down to beat 2018 Asian Games gold medallist Jonatan Christie of Indonesia 13-21, 21-18, 21-15 in the men’s singles second round fixture, which lasted for one hour and two minutes.

Earlier in the day, reigning world champion Sindhu reached the women’s singles quarter-finals after beating Spain’s Clara Azurmendi in three sets. The 26-year-old lost the first game but powered back to win the next two to beat Azurmendi 17-21, 21-7, 21-12 in a 47-minute encounter. Sindhu, the two-time Olympic medallist, will now take on Turkey’s Neslihan Yigit for a place in the semis. Meanwhile, promising youngster Lakshya Sen was knocked out of the Indonesia Masters after losing 13-21 19-21 to the top seed and two-time world champion Kento Momota of Japan in a 46-minute
clash. In the mixed doubles, Dhruv Kapila and N Sikki Reddy also bowed out after losing 15-21, 23-21, 18-21 to Thai team Supak Jomkoh and Supissara Paewsampran. The Indian pair had beaten second seeds and home favourites Praveen Jordan and Melati Oktavianti in the previous round but could not sustain that winning run despite a tough fight. N Sikki Reddy also bowed out of the women’s doubles alongside twotime Olympian Ashwini Ponnappa as the pair went down 18-21, 12-21 to Thai third seeds Jongkolphan Kititharakul and Rawinda Prajongjai.
Spain’s Muguruza bests Kontaveit to win WTA Finals title GUADALAJARA (MEXICO), NOV 18 (IANS): Spain’s Garbiñe Muguruza fought back from a break down in the second set, winning the last four games of the match to defeat No.8 seed Anett Kontaveit of Estonia, 6-3, 7-5 and win her first WTA Finals Championship, in the process bagging a milestone 10th career WTA singles title. The biggest title of Garbiñe’s career was her third title of the year and it came on Wednesday night in front of an excited crowd in Guadalajara. Garbiñe is the first Spaniard to win the WTA Finals singles title in the event’s history. Former World No.1 Arantxa Sanchez Vicario was the only other player from Spain to reach the WTA Finals singles championship match, finishing as runner-up to Stefanie Graf in 1993. The Spaniard started well and survived a wobble in the second set to earn a hard-fought win.
Two relatively close sets went the way of Garbiñe due to her greater effectiveness in returning second serves. Anett only won 38 percent of the Spaniard’s second-service points, while Muguruza claimed nearly 60 percent of points off the Estonian’s second delivery. Garbiñe and Anett were nearly evenly matched in winners during the clash, with 16 for the Spaniard and 15 for Anett. But Garbiñe played the cleaner match overall, with 14 fewer unforced errors than Anett. Former World No.1 Garbiñe Muguruza thus became the only player to defeat Anett Kontaveit within the last month - and she did it twice this week. Garbiñe ended ‘he Estonian’s 12-match winning streak in the round-robin portion of the competition and repeated the feat in the singles final. It was a fitting finale to the last WTA tour-level match of the sea-
son, as Anett and Garbiñe rank first and second in hard-court wins this season, with 39 and 35 titles respectively. But Garbiñe was able to prevail in an hour and 38 minutes this time around, improving to 4-2 overall against Anett. With this victory, twotime Grand Slam champion Garbine Muguruza is

R A N C H I , N OV 1 8 (IANS): After managing to hold their nerve in winning the first T20I in Jaipur, India will be looking to seal the three-match T20I series against New Zealand at the JSCA International Stadium here on Friday. The five-wicket win in Jaipur on Wednesday kickstarted the Rohit SharmaRahul Dravid combination though there were some nervous moments in closing the chase of 165. The hosts can take many positives from the first match in Jaipur. Apart from Sharma’s stroke-filled 48 and Ravichandran Ashwin’s 2/23, Suryakumar Yadav made great use of the opportunity of batting at number three with a solid 62 off 40 balls while Bhuvneshwar Kumar did well in picking 2/24 in his four overs. The one point where India would like some more improvement is in applying the finishing touches with the bat. With 23 runs needed off the last four overs, one would have expected India to reach home early. But the New Zealand pace trio of captain Tim Southee, Trent Boult, and Lockie Ferguson conceded just 13 runs

146-145 in an intense final that went down to the wire, taking the top spot on the podium. It was India’s first gold medal at the ongoing Championships. However, Abhishek had to settle for a silver this time after going down to South Korea’s Kim Jongho by one point in the final, losing 149-148. This was his second medal of the event after he won a bronze with the men’s compound team on Wednesday. Earlier, Jyothi Su-
rekha Vennam and Rishabh Yadav also had to settle for a silver in the compound mixed team, losing 155154 to South Korea’s Choi Yonghee and Kim Yunhee. India have a chance to add three more medals to their tally when the recurve archers take the field on Friday. The men’s and women’s recurve teams have reached their respective finals while the mixed team will contest for the bronze medal.

in 17th, 18th, and 19th overs to bring the equation to 10 runs needed off the final over. It took a four each from debutant Venkatesh Iyer and Rishabh Pant to seal the deal for India despite Daryl Mitchell taking out the former. Though New Zealand will be happy with the performances of pacers at the back-end apart from knocks by Martin Guptill (70 off 42 balls) and Mark Chapman (63 off 50 balls), they realise that the middle-order needs to step up. After Guptill and Chapman’s 109-run stand, the rest of the bat-
ters couldn’t give the score the required impetus in the last five overs. That resulted in them finishing at a total that was 15-20 runs short of what was expected of them. New Zealand will also like for the bowlers to have more control in the Power-play. There could be a forced change for India as pacer Mohammed Siraj got stitches on his left hand after being hit by Mitchell Santner in the final over of the innings. It is yet to know if Siraj is available for Friday’s match or not. Squads: India: Rohit Sharma

NEW DELHI, NOV 18 (IANS): Former Australia skipper Ricky Ponting has revealed that he was approached for the Team India coach’s job but he had to turn it down as he give the job that much time. Ponting said on the Grade Cricketers Podcast that he had a conversation with some people about it during the IPL. “The People I spoke to were very keen to find a way to make it work, but the first thing I said, ‘I can’t give that much of time’. That means, I can’t coach in the IPL,” said Ponting who is currently the head coach of Delhi Capitals. Ponting is surprised that Rahul Dravid took the head coach job of Team India. “I’m very surprised that Dravid has taken this job. I’m not sure about his family life but I’m sure he has young kids. So I’m surprised that he took it but as I said, the people I spoke to were sure they got the right person so they were probably able to get Dravid to do it,” Ponting said. the pair exchange breaks early before Anett Kontaveit dropped a backhand into the net to give Garbine a 4-3 lead. Garbiñe eased through the opening set from there, winning the last four games as she sealed the one-set lead with a deft lob winner. It was Anett, though, who grabbed the early lead in the second set as Garbiñe’s miscues, particularly from the forehand side, started to mount. A forehand error resulted in the Spaniard losing her serve and Anett used her powerful play to consolidate and build a 5-3 lead. However, with Kontaveit serving for the set, Garbiñe pulled back level at 5-5 after playing a forehand winner down the line on the breakpoint. Garbiñe dominated from there on, winning the final four games for the second set in a row. Garbiñe broke Anett at love to wrap up the win and take home the year-end crown.
Manik Saha. Alaknanda Ashok, who is the President of Uttarakhand Badminton Association, will receive the Women and Gender Equity Award. She has been associated with badminton administration for many years now. “We are delighted to see BWF celebrating legendary Prakash Padukone’s contribution to the sport with this award. His contribution is massive in taking Indian badminton to where it is today. When it comes to developing the sport, a strong backbone of administrators, officials and corporate play key roles and it’s great to see they are also being recognised and praised for their support and contribution to the game. On behalf of BAI, I congratulate all the winners and hope with their continued support we will be able to take Indian badminton to greater heights,” BAI general secretary Ajay Singhania said in a statement. The certificates and plaques will be given during the India Open 2021 to all the awardees.
