appeal for statesmanship 1 killed in factional clash at Dimapur CM should blame himself WC from Nagaland government for appeasing CSOs: NPCC Staff Reporter
DIMAPUR, OCT 18 (NPN): Nagaland Pradesh Congress Committee (NPCC) implied that chief minister Neiphiu Rio in his speech, was indulging in doublespeak when he had wondered whether a constitutionally elected government should run the government or the civil society. NPCC said Rio “must only blame himself and nobody else”. It said since becoming chief minister for the first time in 2003, he “indulged in appeasing and empowering civil societies to such an extent, that the authority of the government has been severely compromised on countless occasions.” NPCC also cited the August 18 consultative meeting as a prime example, where the state government abdicated its responsibility to civil societies when it “empowered 14 tribes to settle the land dispute between two villages along
Dimapur-Peren boundary.” NPCC further termed as “a bundle of contradictions,” Rio’s justification in formation of opposition-less government under the United Democratic Alliance to pursue early Naga solution. NPCC said when government of India had announced that formal negotiations with all groups had officially ended on October 31, 2019, Rio’s “relentless attempt to keep the pot boiling is being watched by silent majority of the people of Nagaland”. It said the “biased approach of chief minister towards different groups is well known and this is the one of the major hindrances in hammering out a final agreement as peace continues to elude our state.” Further, NPCC threw a challenge on the 60 legislators who have come together under UDA that since they are professing sincerity for an early Naga solution by playing the role of fa-
representative on Indo-Naga parleys, A.K. Mishra had “reiterated strongly and reassured the Nagas that Government of India will respect ‘Agreed Position’ and subsequent negotiated points concluded with former interlocutor R.N Ravi. Without any deviation, his job will be to take the matter to logical conclusion.” Even as the state government had been playing the role of a facilitator in the Indo-Naga issue for many years, WC stated that the NNPGs have had fruitful deliberations with Nagaland chief minister and cabinet colleagues on many occasions since the political negotiations began in 2017. WC expressed confidence that the state government led by chief minister would play the perfect facilitator in letter and spirit. “At this crucial stage the people of Nagaland must pray for wisdom and statesmanship for the Naga political groups, GoI and Nagaland state govern-

cilitator, the 60 legislators “should also be prepared to be held fully responsible in the event of any delay or breakdown in achieving final solution.” NPCC reminded all legislators of past resolutions both within and outside the assembly, that they are committed to resign and pave the way for early solution is yet to be honoured despite the situation being ripe. NPCC also hit out at Rio who had hailed the tribal bodies for the recent unopposed election of his party candidate for the 58 Shamatore-Chessore constituency. It said Rio’s successful maneuvering with tons of promises and commitments will be tested in the days ahead. On its part, NPCC said the party not having fielded a candidate the bypoll had nothing to do with respecting the decision of the UDA government.

Further, KU demanded commencement of academic activities at Model College, Wakching with adequate human resource and fully functional institution immediately, besides setting up a working women hostel at Mon town under Planning &Coordination department. DIMAPUR, OCT 18 (NPN): Working Committee of the NNPGs has appealed for statesmanship from the state government vis-à-vis Naga political issue. While pointing out that the interlocutors may change but not the issue, WC said: “Talks starting afresh with a new chapter could mean different for different people. Every decision, every word of the state government counts at this hour. Naga leaders must instil hope in our people and built on the momentum achieved.”. Pointing out that the chief minister and all 60 members, under oath owe allegiance to the Indian constitution, WC said that the state government is a child of Indian constitution and “therefore it is always appropriate that the father and son should sing the same tune in the media on crucial matter between Government of India and Nagas.” It further stated that the new Government of India
age III & IV (MerangkongMon road) since the work had been abandoned by Manoranjan Brahma firm, besides putting pressure for constructing inter-State road connectivity between ZeroPoint (Nagaland)-Simulguri (Assam) via Naginimora. Recalling its requests to the State government several times to construct Pongma bridge in consultation with the Assam government since this was the only economic lifeline for Mon district, the union regretted that all
this fell on deaf ears of the government. It once again reminded the State government to initiate the move at the earliest. KU however appreciated and thanked the State government for the concern shown towards the people of Mon district by bringing various developmental works that were of huge importance considering the district’s geographical location and remoteness in comparison with other districts.

NAGALAND POST, DIMAPUR TUESDAY, OCTOBER 19, 2021
Lhousa said although Nagas were aware of the story of late Nagi, with the passing of time people had forgotten the location where he was shot. Lhousa added that in order to let future generations know the exact location, he thought it was his bounden duty to pinpoint the same so that the knowledge could be passed on. On that day, a silent procession was held at Kohima to protest against the grievous assault against a Sümi youth by the Assam
police in Dimapur. In the proceedings of that day one Indian Intelligent Officer by the name Captain Verick created a disturbance to the procession, Lhousa disclosed. He added that during the commotion that ensued, an Assam police officer by the name Dutta fired from his service pistol which critically shot Nagi in the abdomen who later succumbed to his injury at Naga Hospital Kohima on the same day. On hearing about the
news a multitude of people came to mourn late Nagi on October 19, 1952, who was later laid to rest at his native village Jotsoma. NNC leaders collectively set aside October 18 to be Naga National Martyrs’ Day and to be observed every year in memory of all those who laid down their lives for the Naga cause, Lhousa informed. It may be mentioned here that late Zasibito Nagi, born in the year 1921 was the son of Vizielhou Nagi from Jotsoma village. During the time of his demise, late Nagi was serving as the vice president of NNC, Western Angami Group and also a judicial member in the Kohima Central Court. Every year on October 18, the Naga national flag is flown at half-mast as a mark of respect to the Naga martyrs. Monday’s gathering was attended by family members of late Nagi, representatives from Angami Youth Organisation, Western Angami Public and Youth Organizations, Jotsoma Students’ Union, Naga National Workers and women representatives. The gathering observed a one-minute silent prayer followed by benediction from Lhousa.

of easy living and blind in greed. Opening the book with an ode to “To You Zakope”, Kopelo Krome dedicated the book to his family, relatives, friends, son and to all the Naga patriots. SILCHAR/ GUWAHATI, OCT 18 (PTI): A state government hoarding written in Assamese has been found smeared with black ink in the Bengali-majority Barak valley area of Assam triggering criticism from some parties. The incident, which took place at Silchar in Cachar district on Sunday, was allegedly carried out by members of two organisations demanding the use of Bengali in place of Assamese in the Barak valley region. Visuals showed the alleged activists climbing a ladder and defacing the hoarding in front of Silchar Railway station. They also wrote ‘ Bangla Likhun’ (write in Bengali) and the names of the two organisations below it. An official in Silchar said no complaint has been registered with the police regarding the incident, though the law enforcers are looking into the matter. The Assam Official Language Act, 1960, adopted Assamese as the official language of the state, though it included
routes. The ministry noted that flight connectivity along these routes has been a longpending demand of the natives of the regions. It added that with these new flights, travellers from Guwahati, Aizawl, and Shillong will get multiple options for onward connectivity to the rest of the country. Civil Aviation Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia said, “Mizoram is the gateway to North-East India. The city has an immense amount of importance for its tourism & economic sector. We are committed to giving wings to Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi’s vision of making it possible that every state’s uniqueness must be experienced by all citizens
provisions for use of Bengali for all administrative and official purposes in the Bengali-majority Barak Valley of the state, comprising Cachar, Karimganj, and Hailakandi districts. The use of the Bengali language for official purposes was authorised following a mass movement by the Bengali-speaking population, especially in Barak valley, which had also led to the death of 11 protestors at Silchar Railway Station on May 16, 1961. The smearing of the gover nment hoarding has led to condemnation from regional organisations of the state, with the All Assam Students Union (AASU) and Asom Jatiyatabadi Yuba Chatra Parishad (AJYCP) criticising the move to denounce the official language of the state. Barak Democratic Yuba Front (BDYF) and All Bengali Students Youth Organisation (ABSYO) had allegedly carried out the protest programme near the hoarding. Kalpar nob Gupta,
the convener of BDYF, maintained that the advertisement was against the government notification that allowed the use of Bengali as the official language in Barak Valley. “Some circles with vested interests are trying to impose Assamese here. The chief minister was celebrating Durga Puja in Barak Valley and at the same time, his government is indulging in such acts,” he said. All Bengali Students Youth Organisation Cachar district president Raju Deb said the government should refrain from indulging in any activity that could disrupt harmony, and concentrate on developmental projects. Reacting to the incident, All Assam Students Union general secretary Sankar Jyoti Boruah on Monday said it is unfortunate that the Assamese language has been insulted in Assam itself. “If the Assamese language is disrespected in Assam itself on the pretext of the Language Act, what will be the future of our

When that happens, will our language be safe anymore?” Boruah asked. He also demanded strict action against the organisations that had indulged in the act of defacing the hoarding at Silchar. Palash Changmai, general secretary of AJYCP, alleged that a section of Bengali-speaking people was framing a design to make Bengali at par with the Assamese language in Assam. “Assamese speakers are confined to Assam and if the language is not protected here, our language will be in danger,” he said. AIZAWL, OCT 18 (PTI): Mizoram on Monday registered 249 new COVID-19 cases, the lowest in two months, raising the tally to 1,12,84, while three fresh fatalities pushed the toll to 386, a health department official said. On Sunday, the state had registered 948 new cases and the day before 932 infections. According to the official, the single-day tally is usually less on Mondays as several testing centres, including the RT-PCR laboratory at Zoram Medical College (ZMC), remain closed on Sundays. Mizoram, however, has been recording below-1000 single-day infections over the past four days, bringing some relief to the administration and people. As many as 1,389 people have recuperated from the disease since Sunday, taking the total number of recoveries to 1,00,829, the official said. ‘ONLY THE CHAKMAS’ is nothing but an act of racial profiling in clear violation of the Article 14 of the Constitution of India and International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination ratified by India,” stated Suhas Chakma, founder of the CDFI. Suhas Chakma added: “The Chakmas of Arunachal Pradesh are citizens of India even though because of the discriminatory policies and practices of the Government of Arunachal Pradesh, their citizenship applications have not been processed in
the last 25 years in contempt of the Supreme Court judgments while those who are citizens by birth under the Citizenship Act, 1955 are not included into the electoral rolls. There is no law or logic to conduct census of only one community.” CDFI stated that “if the State of Arunachal Pradesh wants to conduct a census, it must conduct for the entire State for all irrespective of caste, creed or religion. But, the decision to conduct census of ‘ONLY THE CHAKMAS’ is illegal and unconstitutional and amounts to racial profiling.”

There is 28.1 per cent anger against UP Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, but that is accounted for by the fact that Uttar Pradesh is a polarised state. “Yogi being a polarising figure, the number is not surprising,” said Deshmukh. He added that the arithmetic of 40 per cent support base ensures that BJP is in a strong position in Uttar Pradesh.
Dera chief Gurmeet Singh, 4 others get life term in 19-yr-old murder case
CHANDIGARH, OCT 18 (PTI): Dera Sacha Sauda chief Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh and four others were sentenced to life imprisonment by a special CBI court on Monday for the murder of sect manager Ranjit Singh in 2002. Ram Rahim Singh, who was in 2017 sentenced to 20 years imprisonment for raping two disciples, is currently lodged in Rohtak’s Sunaria jail. The Special Court in Haryana’s Panchkula had convicted him and four others - Krishan Lal, Jasbir Singh, Avtar Singh and Sabdil - in the murder case on October 8. “The court has given the life sentence to five,” CBI special prosecutor H P S Verma said after the hearing was held amid tight security. The CBI had sought capital punishment for them. Verma said the Dera chief was also fined Rs 31 lakh and half of the amount
BJP slams Cong for ‘vilification’ of Patel at CWC meet Oppn party dismisses claim as lies NEW DELHI, OCT 18 (PTI): The BJP on Monday accused the Congress of committing a “sin” over reports that a leader at the recent CWC meeting made critical remarks about Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel on the issue of Jammu and Kashmir and asked if the party leadership will take action against him. As BJP leaders attacked the Congress, the opposition party dismissed the reports with its chief spokesperson Randeep Singh Surjewala alleging that “spreading lies and canards” has become a norm for some. BJP spokesperson

Sambit Patra cited reports that Tariq Hameed Karra, a Kashmiri leader and a p e r m a n e n t i nv i t e e t o the Cong ress Working Committee, had credited Jawa h a r l a l N e h r u f o r Jammu and Kashmir’s integ ration with India and had alleged that Patel wanted to keep the Valley out. Cong slams govt over rising fuel prices, Rahul alleges ‘tax extortion’ NEW DELHI, OCT 18 (PTI): The Congress on Monday attacked the government over auto fuel costing more than the rate at which aviation turbine fuel (ATF) is sold to airlines, with former party chief Rahul Gandhi alleging that the Centre was resorting to “tax extortion”. Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra also took a dig at the gover nment, saying it promised to make those wearing ‘hawai chappals’ travel by air but it has hiked
U’khand rains: Shah speaks to Dhami, assures help NEW DELHI, OCT 18 (IANS): Amid continuous heavy rains in Uttrakhand, Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Monday spoke to Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami and took stock of the situation. Shah also enquired about the steps taken by the state government in the wake of the incessant rains and assured him of all possible central help. According to the state government officials, Dhami directed all district magistrates to update him on the situation on hourly basis. They also said that the CM has asked the Chardham Devasthanam B o a r d t o t e m p o r a r i ly suspend the ‘Char Dham Yatra’ because of the heavy downpour since Sunday and asked the pilgrims not to proceed further till the weather improves. Dhami on Monday also visited the state disaster control room at the secretariat and took the updates of the roads and highways, the officials added.
the prices of petrol and diesel so much that it has become difficult for the middle class to travel even by road. Tagging a media report on auto fuels costing a third more than the rate at which ATF is sold to airlines, Rahul Gandhi tweeted that this is a very serious issue -“simple needs of the people that are not being fulfilled today come before electionRahul Gandhi vote-politics”. “I am with the people and will continue to raise who are being cheated for their voices,” the former the benefit of Modi’s friends Congress chief said in a
tweet in Hindi and added “Stop #TaxExtortion”. Priyanka Gandhi, in a tweet in Hindi, said, “Had promised that those wearing ‘hawai chappals’ (slippers) will travel by air plane. But the BJP government has hiked the prices of petrol and diesel so much that now it has become difficult for those wearing ‘hawai chappals’ and the middle class to travel even by road.” She used the hashtag ‘BJP lai mehenge din (BJP has brought expensive
days)’ with her tweet. The Congress, from its official Twitter handle, alleged that auto fuels costing a more than the rate at which ATF is sold to airlines was a proof of the Modi government’s “loot”. Petrol and diesel prices on Sunday were hiked again by 35 paise a litre and after this hike the auto fuel was now costing a third more than the rate at which ATF is sold to airlines. The price of petrol in Delhi rose to its highestever level of Rs 105.84 a
litre and Rs 111.77 per litre in Mumbai, according to a price notification of stateowned fuel retailers. In Mumbai, diesel now comes for Rs 102.52 a litre; while in Delhi, it costs Rs 94.57. Petrol used in twowheelers and cars now costs 33 per cent more than the price at which aviation turbine fuel (ATF) is sold to airlines. ATF in Delhi costs Rs 79,020.16 per kilolitre or Rs 79 per litre. All the figures are as per Sunday’s hike.

will go to the victim’s family as compensation. Reacting to the verdict, Jagseer Singh, son of Ranjit Singh, said it was a big day for the family as they got justice after a long wait. Jagseer, who was eight years old when his father was murdered, said he was satisfied with the verdict, though his family was seeking death sentence for Ram Rahim Singh. The Dera chief, who enjoyed a large following, had frequently courted controversies and after his conviction in the rape case in 2017, violence had broken
out in Panchkula and Sirsa leaving over 40 dead. Police had tightened security in Panchkula and Sirsa, where the sect is headquartered, ahead of the hearing. In Panchkula, prohibitory orders under Section 144 were clamped. Former Dera manager Ranjit Singh, who was also a follower of the sect, was shot dead on July 10, 2002 at Khanpur Kolian village in Haryana’s Kurukshetra. According to the CBI charge sheet, the Dera chief believed that Ranjit Singh was behind the circulation of an anonymous letter and hatched a conspiracy to kill him. The letter narrated how women were allegedly being sexually exploited by the sect head at the Dera headquarters. The five were convicted under relevant sections, including 302 (murder), 120 B (criminal conspiracy) of the IPC.

with Pakistan’s founder M A Jinnah, the BJP spokesperson said citing reports. Patra asked whether Congress president Sonia Gandhi or Rahul Gandhi objected when Karra “vilified” Patel and presented India’s first home minister as a “villain” while praising Nehru. Slamming the reports, Surjewala claimed that they are aimed at giving cover fire to the Modi government to “justify lies-driven press conferences” while the BJP dispensation is “never” questioned. Seizing on the issue, Union Minister Dharmendra Pradhan took a swipe at the Congress, claiming that the Gandhi family cannot even unite the party, let alone uniting India.

The Congress, Patra alleged, is reduced to being a party of a family and works to advance the family’s rule. “What sort of mindset is this that one family has done everything and others have done nothing. What the CWC has done is a sin,” he said.

NEW DELHI, OCT 18 (IANS): Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel is the best performing Chief Minister in the country, facing the least anger of the electorate, as per the IANSCVoter Governance Index. Only 6 per cent of the respondents are angry with Baghel and want a change. Conversely, Baghel enjoys highest popularity ratings among all Chief Ministers, as per the tracker. In case of Chhattisgarh, anger is directed against the Central government and even state MLAs, but there is hardly any anger towards Baghel. As many as 44.7 per cent respondents in Chhattisgarh are angry with the Central government, while 36.6 per cent are angry with the state government. Baghel has introduced a slew of welfare schemes in Chhattisgarh, including providing free education to children studying in private schools, who have lost parents/guardians to Covid-19. Under the

OPINION/EDITORIAL
Nagaland Post VOL. XXXI NO. 314 DIMAPUR, TUESDAY, OCTOBER 19, 2021
Family party limited
E
ventually, the Congress Working Committee (CWC) did have its meeting on October 16,2021 which was a long pending demand made in August 2020 by the dissenting G23 Congress leaders who have been demanding revamp of the party organization and to elect a full time party president after Rahul, (who was “elected” as president in 2017), quit the post in 2019 following the second successive disastrous results in the two Lok Sabha elections. At such a time, when the party needed Rahul to lead and rebuild, he instead chose to run away and escaped to take another of his famous ‘sabbatical’ in a foreign country. After Rahul quit, Sonia came out of retirement to preserve the family chair as interim president till her son is persuaded to sit on the family throne. Veteran Congress leaders had thoughtfully written to Sonia to halt the slide and restore back normalcy within the party folds by revamping the set up and electing a full time president. The G23 leaders like veteran Congressmen Ghulam Nabi Azad, Kapil Sibal, Shashi Tharoor, Manish Tiwari, Anand Sharma, PJ Kurien, Renuka Chaudhary, Milind Deora, Mukul Wasnik, Jitin Prasada, Bhupendra Singh Hooda, Rajinder Kaur Bhattal, M Veerappa Moily, Prithviraj Chavan, Ajay Singh, Raj Babbar, Arvind Singh Lovely, Kaul Singh Thakur, Kuldeep Sharma, Yoganand Shastri, Sandeep Dixit and Vivek Tankha. Many of them have been union ministers, chief ministers or the party’s state unit chiefs. The CWC meeting was convened under the pretext of discussion about party strategy for the upcoming assembly elections in 2022 and the farmers issue that led to the Lakhimpur incident on October 3. The CWC meeting, if anything confirmed that the Congress is suffering from brain damage. Sonia’s attack against the party’s G23 was more biting than her charges against the BJP. The CWC comprising of ‘loyalists/yes persons’ resolved to appoint Rahul Gandhi as party president since it was felt that the remote controller of the super high command, who has consistently proved a failure in recent elections (even losing Kerala where he represents a parliamentary constituency) is now ready to reoccupy the chair. The CWC has set the date for elections by September 2022, so that Sonia continues as ‘interim president’ and giving sufficient time to prepare grounds for Rahul Gandhi’s return as party chief. A recent write up about the ways of the Congress, explained that the family may have retained its dynastic legacy but the party is on its way to extinction. According to media reports, BJP leaders, in private conversations, call Rahul as their ‘biggest asset.’ All media polls pit Rahul against Modi and this is one thing that the BJP likes best since it makes it easier for Modi to effect a win anytime. Though the Modi government has bungled badly in many areas and literally handed over opportunities to the Congress on a platter, yet Rahul has failed to exploit it. It is because Rahul is a very poor orator, a poor leader and worse, having limited capabilities. To the credit of Rahul, is honest that he is unfit to be the leader of India’s oldest party but is made to feel duty bound to his family to reoccupy the post of party chief. Many have said that the Congress cannot survive without the Gandhis but the moot point today is whether the party can survive even with the Gandhis?
DailyDevotion The Key to the Missionary’s Devotion
…they went forth for His name’s sake… —3 John 7 Our Lord told us how our love for Him is to exhibit itself when He asked, “Do you love Me?” (John 21:17). And then He said, “Feed My sheep.” In effect, He said, “Identify yourself with My interests in other people,” not, “Identify Me with your interests in other people.” 1 Corinthians 13:4-8 shows us the characteristics of this love— it is actually the love of God expressing itself. The true test of my love for Jesus is a very practical one, and all the rest is sentimental talk. Faithfulness to Jesus Christ is the supernatural work of redemption that has been performed in me by the Holy Spirit— “the love of God has been poured out in our hearts by the Holy Spirit…” (Romans 5:5). And it is that love in me that effectively works through me and comes in contact with everyone I meet. I remain faithful to His name, even though the commonsense view of my life may seemingly deny that, and may appear to be declaring that He has no more power than the morning mist. The key to the missionary’s devotion is that he is attached to nothing and to no one except our Lord Himself. It does not mean simply being detached from the external things surrounding us. Our Lord was amazingly in touch with the ordinary things of life, but He had an inner detachment except toward God. External detachment is often an actual indication of a secret, growing, inner attachment to the things we stay away from externally. The duty of a faithful missionary is to concentrate on keeping his soul completely and continually open to the nature of the Lord Jesus Christ. The men and women our Lord sends out on His endeavors are ordinary human people, but people who are controlled by their devotion to Him, which has been brought about through the work of the Holy Spirit.

Post-mortem
Naga Hills: Tseminyu was the fifth Administrative Hq. T he Rengma Hills (now in Assam) was created on 18th April 1841. Later, the Naga Hills District was created in 1866 by incorporating Rengma Hills with Samaguting (Chumoukedima) as its headquarters. Tribes under Naga Hills District: The tribes under Naga Hills district were Angami, Zeliang, Rengma, Eastern Angami (now Chakhesang) , Eastern Rengma (now Pochury), Lotha, Sema (Sumi) Ao, Cachari, Garo and Kuki. After the creation of Mokokchung Sub-division (C), Ao, Sema and Lotha were placed under Mokokchung Subdivision, and the rest of the tribes were placed under Kohima Sadar and there was no other administrative headquarters in Naga Hills, besides Deputy Commissioner, Kohima and SDO (C) Mokokchung. Creation of Bench Court Chairman: In order to assist these two administrative headquarters – Kohima and Mokokchung, the Government of Assam created the post of Bench Court Chairman (equivalent to 2nd class magistrate) for the following Naga tribes. 1. Bench Court Chairman, Wokha - 1945 (now a district) 2. Bench Court Chairman, Zunheboto - 1 9 4 7 (now a district) 3. Bench Court Chairman, Tseminyu - 1948 (same
status) 4. Bench Court Chairman, Peren - 1949 (now a district) 5. S.D.O (civil) Mokokchung - 1890 (now a district) 6. Naga Hills district headquarters, Kohima 1878 (now Nagaland state Capital) In the early years, Tseminyu (Rengma) region was the 5th administrative headquarter to be set up but still it remains the same even after seventy four years. Rengma participation and contribution for common Naga causes: 1. Naga Club 1918: When the Naga Labor corps returned from France in June 1918 and formed the Naga Club in 1918 to protect and safeguard Naga interests, Mr. Nrilo Rengma, D.B., was one of the founder members of the Club. 2. Simon Commission 1929: When the Simon Commission came to Kohima and held a public meeting at the public ground on 10th January 1929, the members of Naga Club submitted a Memorandum to Sir John Simon where Mr. Resilo Rengma, D.B., was one of the signatories of the Memorandum. 3. Formation of Naga Hills District Tribal Council (NHDTC) 1945: When C.R. Pawsey Deputy Commissioner of Naga Hills, Kohima, advised Naga leaders to form Naga tribal council to protect and safeguard Naga interests, the Naga leaders, mostly Government
servants met at Kohima in April 1945 and formed the Naga Hills District Tribal Council (NHDTC) and Mr. P.Sentsi Rengma became the joint Secretary of NHDTC. The NHDTC was the second Naga organization to work for Naga common cause. 4. Formation of NNC 1946: NHDTC held its second meeting in June 1946 at Wokha and changed its nomenclature to Naga National Council with the same office-bearers of NHDTC retained except its president Mr. Mayangnokcha Ao who resigned and in his place Mr. T. Aliba was elected. In this meeting, Mr. Whenha Rengma was elected as one of the executive members of NNC who later became the first Ato Kilonser, Federal Government of Nagaland. 5. Sir Akbar Hydari Agreement 1947: Sir Akbar Hydari, the Governor of Assam came to Kohima and held discussions with NNC leaders from 26th to 28th June 1947 and he signed the 9- Point agreement with the NNC. Mr. Whenha Rengma was there in the talks as one of the NNC delegates from the Rengma tribe. 6. Naga delegation to Delhi 1947:- In July 1947, NNC held its meeting at Mokokchung and passed a resolution to send Naga delegation to Delhi to negotiate with Indian leaders regarding the Naga issue. The first Naga delegation led by A.Z Phizo and T.Sakhrie met Mahatma Gandhi on 19th
Speech of FGN Kedahge on the 70th Martyrs’ Day
July 1947 at Delhi. Again, the second Naga delegation with Longri Ao as their spokesman had a meeting with Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru on 2nd August 1947. Mr. P.Sentsi Rengma was there in the second Naga delegation as Rengma tribe representative. 7. Declaration of Naga Independence: When both Naga delegations returned home from Delhi, they held several consultative meetings with Naga leaders and elders at Kohima for a week. Nagas finally decided to declare Naga Independence a day ahead of India. On 14th August 1947, at sunrise, NNC leaders, Naga leaders and elders gathered at Mission Compound, Kohima, and declared Naga Independence by hoisting a symbolic Naga national flag. Rengma leaders including P.Sentsi, Whenha Rengma, Hophega Rengma, Nnolo Tep etc. took active part in the ceremony. 8. Naga Plebiscite 1951: Rengmas took active part and fully supported Naga sovereignty. 9. Declaration of Federal Government of Nagaland 1956: On 22nd March 1956, the Naga national flag was hoisted at Parashen in Rengma area by Mr. Thungdi Chang, Chief of the Naga Homeguards (now Naga Army). Immediately the 3rd Bihar Regiment of the Indian Army began its furious operation against the innocent villagers by burning villages, rice gra-
naries and killing the innocent public in Rengma area. Killings and burning of villages became everyday affairs, thereby, the villagers lived in the jungle for a year. 10. N a ga Pe o p l e ’s Convention (NPC) and Sixteen Point Agreement: N.P.C. proposed for formation of a separate administrative unit by merging Tuensang Division of NEFA with Naga Hills District which was agreed by the Govt. of India, and the new Administrative unit was called Naga Hills Tuensang Area (NHTA) with effect from 1st December 1957. Mr. Daniel Kent and Mr. P. Sentsi were Rengma tribe representatives to N.P.C. N.P.C. delegation led by its president Dr. Imkongliba Ao met Jawaharlal Nehru, the Prime Minister of India on 26th July 1960 at Delhi and placed their demand. They signed the agreement on 29th July 1960 for Nagaland Statehood. Mr. Sentsi Rengma was there in the N.P.C. delegation and signed the agreement as Rengma tribe representative. No provision in India can deny Tseminyu the status of a district: There’s no provision anywhere in India that a one Assembly seat Sub-division cannot be upgraded to a district. I would like to cite some districts having only one Assembly seat for our reference: 1. In Manipur state, Jiribam district has only
one Assembly seat (Jiribam A/C) and its population is 43,838 as per general census of India 2011. 2. In Arunachal Pradesh, Anjaw district has only one Assembly seat- Hayuliang A/C and its population is 21,089. 3. In Assam, Dima Hasao district, has only one Assembly seat- Halflong A/C and its population is 2,14,102. 4 . I n Te l a n g a n a , Wanaparthy district has only one Assembly seatWanaparthy A/C and its population is 57,549. 5. In Himachal Pradesh, Lahaul & Spiti district has only one Assembly seat-Lahaul and Spiti A/C (ST) and its population is 31,528. 6. In Gujarat, Dang district has only one Assembly seat-Dang A/C (ST) and its population is 2,26,769. 7. In Bihar, Sheohar district has only one Assembly seat-Sheohar A/C and its population is 6,556,246. Conclusion: From the formation of Naga Hills District in1866 till 1st December 1963, the Rengmas were there in the forefront. Regarding Tseminyu district demand, the Rengmas more than deserve a district as a matter of right. Since all the other districts in the state has been formed based purely on “tribal lines” there’s no reason that Tseminyu cannot be granted one. Nillo Rengma
Are you really in ketosis? And should you be?
T
he ketogenic diet or the keto diet is fast emerging as a popular Go-for it diet. It has gained immense popularity during the last decade. Multiple pinterest boards, instagram pages are zealously dedicated to it and it is heavily endorsed by popular celebrities. When you enter Google search - keto recipes, 24 hour personalized keto diet, keto supplement and more are making fast headway. Permutations of keto diets are burgeoning. Most people have joined on the keto diet bandwagon fueled with numerous positive glowing praises by fanatical keto diet followers. Although this trend diet appears new to your newsfeed, it has been clinically used as a treatment to reduce seizures in pediatric patients with epilepsy under the supervision of trained dietitians and physicians since the 1920s. This finding lead to examination of other therapeutic uses of ketogenic diet and in carefully monitored settings for some type of Cancer, Type 2 Diabetes, obesity, Polycystic Ovary Syndrome and Alzheimer’s disease, therapeutic ketogenic diet has been tested and applied. Seizure disorders: With the introduction of antiepileptic medication the use of ketogenic diet for epilepsy ceased, however for those with drug-resistant epilepsy can reduce seizure frequency by at least 50% with a ketogenic diet but long-term adherence is challenging as food choices are limited and adverse effects are common. Most studies have not been long-term nor conducted with adult participation hence, a need for more research. Cancer: A 2020 systematic review by RJ Klement et al, analyzed 13 studies of ketogenic diets as complementary therapy for standard treatments in a variety of cancers. 9 were prospective and 6 were controlled but just 2 were randomized and ketogenic diet prescriptions differed between studies. Adverse diet related events were uncommon and minor and the diet had a beneficial effect on body composition. Findings were mixed on both overall survival and progression-free survival, beneficial effects were seen in four studies. With the potential benefits for body composition, large-scale, welldesigned,
randomized clinical trials are needed to determine the safety and effectiveness of ketogenic diet in cancer treatment. Type 2 diabetes: Despite the evidence that ketogenic diets improve glucose control, few data are available about sustainability, safety and efficacy in the long term. A 2020 study by Batch et al revealed that comparison of different meta-analysis, review articles and interventional studies established no uniformity in reported results. Most studies were short duration of intervention, small sample size and high participant dropout rates and as a result cannot be considered applicable to general population. Obesity: A 2021 study by N Drabinska et al indicates that recently published clinical trials on ketogenic diet can be efficient for weight management without causing severe adverse effects but, many studies were conducted with very low calorie keto diet regime, where effect on body weight can be related to high caloric deficit, not nutritional composition. To recommend keto diet for weight management, more in-depth elucidation of safety and physiological effects of keto diet in obese individuals are needed. Based on 2020 review, within the first 6-12 months of initiating ketogenic diet, weight loss was observed. However, the effects were not seen generally after 12 months of therapy, as changes reported in the studies reviewed were not statistically significant. Similarly, ketogenic diet for Polycystic Ovary Syndrome despite demonstrating a positive impact due to small sample size, short intervention time interval it is rendered inadequate in terms of generalizability. Significant cognitive improvements in the intervention groups was found in a 2020 review of short term ketogenic diet in older adults for Alzheimer’s disease, however due to lack of long-term data, cognitive gains would be maintained after discontinuation remains unknown. It is crucial to know that ketogenic diet is not yet recognized as a first-line treatment for any of the above mentioned diseases or disorders. Ketogenic diet may indicate as promising but more, strong evidence and extensive studies on long-term and large-scale patients are required to deduce the effective-

Rajnath Singh launches a book of Integrated unmanned roadmap for Indian Navy, during the second edition of Naval Commanders’ Conference 2021 in New Delhi, Monday. (PTI)
NEW DELHI, OCT 18 (PTI): There is a greater need to maintain peace and stability within the Indian maritime zone in order to boost trade and other economic activities, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh said on Monday. Singh, while addressing the second edition of the Naval Commanders’ Conference, said India envisions the Indian Ocean region with universal values such as “rule-based freedom of navigation” and “free trade” in which the interests of all participating countries are protected. There have been mounting global concerns over China’s growing military assertiveness in the Indo-Pacific region. Last month, the Indian Navy’s anti-submarine warfare Corvette INS Kiltan had carried out a military exercise with Australian
frigate Anzac in the South China Sea, a region that has been witnessing growing Chinese military expansionism. The defence ministry in a statement on Monday said, “Speaking about the rapidly changing economic and political relations across the world, Singh said that these economic interests do cause some stress in the relations.” “Therefore, there is a greater need to maintain peace and stability within the Indian maritime zones in order to boost the trade and economic activities,” he said, according to the ministry’s statement. The India Navy’s role in ensuring maintenance of peace and stability in the Indian Ocean region is going to increase manifold in the times to come, Singh said. China claims sovereignty over all of the South
China Sea, a huge source of hydrocarbons. However, several ASEAN member countries, including Vietnam, the Philippines and Brunei, have counterclaims. According to the defence ministry, Singh stated that India supports consensus based principles and a peaceful, open, rule based and stable world order as a responsible maritime stakeholder. He said that only those countries whose navies are strong have been successful in gaining dominance across the world and “I am happy to say that our Navy is playing an important role in our maritime and national security”. The statement said that Singh expressed happiness that in the last five financial years, more than two-thirds of the Navy’s modernisation budget has been spent on indigenous procurement.

On Sunday evening, Punjab Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi held a meeting with Sidhu. Minister Pargat Singh, considered close to Sidhu, was among those present there. Interacting with reporters on Sunday, Channi said, “Be it 13-point, 18-point, 21-point or 24-point, whatever the agenda is will be implemented. agenda: Nadda
NEW DELHI, OCT 18 (PTI): Accusing opposition parties of trying to put hurdles in the government’s agenda of development, BJP president J P Nadda said on Monday that his party members have worked for the nation keeping in mind not only “political indicators” but also “social indicators”. In his address at the BJP’s national office bearers meeting, Nadda cited its welfare measures during the COVID-19 pandemic coupled with the Modi government’s agenda of development and pro-poor programmes like free grains and asserted that the ruling party has worked to change the definition of politics, official sources said. Briefing reporters, party vice president and former Chhattisgarh chief minister Raman Singh said the meeting of the office bearers will put in place the party’s agenda for the next few months, and noted that it comes against the backdrop of Prime Minister Narendra Modi engaging in extensive deliberations with BJP’s organisational leaders over the last few months.
On October 16, rescuers had recovered bodies of a man and a woman who were travelling in a car which was swept away in the flood waters in Kanjar area of Idukki district. “Till now, we have found the bodies of 11 people. One person is still missing. The search by Navy

All issues will be resolved,” he replied when asked about Sidhu’s letter. Sidhu has sought a meeting with party president Sonia Gandhi, flagging in a letter issues which the government “must deliver upon” and saying it is the poll-bound state’s “last chance for resurrection and redemption”. In the letter to the Congress president on October 15, a day after he had meetings with senior party leaders in Delhi, Sidhu pitched for a “Punjab Model with a 13-Point Agenda to be part of the Congress manifesto for the 2022 Assembly Elections”. Days after resigning as Punjab Congress chief, Sidhu had on October 15 said his concerns had been resolved and the party asserted that he would continue as the head of the state unit. Sidhu reminded Sonia Gandhi of the party’s 18-point agenda “given to the last chief minister” of Punjab and said that those were “equally relevant today”. He had raised several issues including justice in the 2015 sacrilege cases, arrest of “big fish” in drug racket, and scrapping power purchase pacts.

The prices won’t come down till the time the diesel prices are lowered,” Holkar told IANS on phone. The Centre’s Department of Consumer Affairs has said, it has taken up a “calibrated and targeted release of onions” from its buffer stock guided by the twin objectives of moderating prices and ensuring minimal storage loss. Onion buffer has been maintained by the Department of Consumer Affairs under the Price Stabilization Fund (PSF) with the objective of effective market intervention to moderate prices. In 2021-22, against the target of building 2 lakh metric tonnes (LMT) onion buffer a total of 2.08 LMT was procured from Rabi-2021 crop during April to July, 2021, the Centre had said on Sunday.

This has had a cascading effect on retail rates in Delhi. Around navaratri time, the rates were stable, tomatoes cost Rs 50 per kg but days after Dussehra, on Monday, the rates had soared to Rs 80 per kg. Onions are currently being sold at Rs 60 per kg in most areas, with rates in south Delhi tad higher. Vegetable rates rarely soar in just one area or one metro. The price rise is almost all the time pan-India, especially for the metro cities. NEW DELHI, OCT 18 (IANS): The delayed withdrawal of monsoon, coupled with flood situation in various parts of the country, soaring fuel prices and the festive season demand have all set the prices of vegetables, especially essentials such as onion and tomato, to shoot up within a week or so. The Centre has claimed it is keeping tab on the prices and even announced that it has maintained a buffer stock to moderate prices and ensuring minimal storage loss. The prices were relatively stable till about last month and the rates were comparable to that of the same time last year. First Black secy of state, Gen. Colin Powell dies WASHINGTON, OCT 18 (AP): Colin Powell, who ser ved Democratic and Republican presidents in war and peace but whose sterling reputation was forever stained when he went before the UN and made faulty claims to justify the US war in Iraq, has died of COVID-19 complications. He was 84. A veteran of the Vietnam War, Powell rose to the rank of four-star general and in 1989 became the first Black chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. In that role he oversaw the US invasion of Panama and later the US invasion of Kuwait to oust the Iraqi army in 1991. But his legacy was marred when, in 2003, he went before the UN Security Council as secretary of state and made the case for US war against Iraq at a moment of great international skepticism. He cited faulty information claiming Saddam Hussein had secretly stashed away weapons of mass destruction. Iraq’s claims that it had no such weapons represented “a web of lies,” he told the world body. In announcing his death on social media, Powell’s family said he had been fully vaccinated. “We have lost a re-

Gen. Colin Powell
markable and loving husband, father and grandfather and a great American,” the family said. Powell had been treated at Walter Reed National Medical Center in Bethesda, Maryland. Powell was the first American official to publicly lay the blame for the 9/11 terrorist attacks on Osama bin Laden’s al-Qaida network and made a lightning trip to Pakistan in October, 2001 to demand that thenPakistani President Pervez Musharraf cooperate with the United States in going after the Afghanistan-based group, which also had a presence in Pakistan, where bin Laden was later killed. As President George W. Bush’s first secretary of state, Powell led a State Department that was dubious of the military and intelligence communities’ conviction that Saddam
Hussein possessed or was developing weapons of mass destruction. And yet, despite his reservations, he presented the administration’s case that Saddam indeed posed a major regional and global threat in a speech to the UN Security Council in the runup to the war. That speech, replete with his display of a vial of what he said could have been a biological weapon, was later derided as a low-point in Powell’s career, although he had removed some elements that he deemed to have been based on poor intelligence assessments. Bush said Monday that he and former first lady Laura Bush were “deeply saddened” by Powell’s death. “He was a great public servant” and “widely respected at home and abroad,” Bush said.
“And most important, Colin was a family man and a friend. Laura and I send Alma and their children our sincere condolences as they remember the life of a great man.” Powell rose to national prominence under Republican presidents and considered a presidential bid of his own, but ultimately moved away from the party. He endorsed Democrats in the last four presidential elections, starting with for mer President Barack Obama. He emerged as a vocal Donald Trump critic in recent years, describing Trump as “a national disgrace” who should have been removed from office through impeachment. Following the January 6 storming of the US Capitol, Powell said he no longer considers himself a Republican. Powell rose from a childhood in a fraying New York neighbourhood to become the nation’s chief diplomat. “Mine is the story of a black kid of no early promise from an immigrant family of limited means who was raised in the South Bronx,” he wrote in his 1995 autobiography “My American Journey.” At City College, Powell discovered the ROTC.
When he put on his first uniform, “I liked what I saw,” he wrote. He joined the Army and in 1962 he was one of more than 16,000 military advisers sent to South Vietnam by President John F. Kennedy. A series of promotions led to the Pentagon and assignment as a military assistant to Secretary of Defense Caspar Weinberger, who became his unofficial sponsor. He later became commander of the Army’s 5th Corps in Germany and later was national security assistant to President Ronald Reagan. During his term as Joint Chiefs chairman, his approach to war became known as the Powell Doctrine, which held that the United States should only commit forces in a conflict if it has clear and achievable objectives with public support, sufficient firepower and a strategy for ending the war. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin, a retired Army general, said the news of Powell’s death left “a hole in my heart.” “The world lost one of the greatest leaders that we have ever witnessed,” Austin said while traveling in Europe.
Russia suspends its mission to NATO, foreign minister says MOSCOW, OCT 18 (AP): Russia’s foreign minister said Monday that the country is suspending its mission to NATO. Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said that the move is in response to last week’s expulsion by NATO of eight members of Russia’s mission to the military alliance. NATO said that they were secretly working as intelligence officers and halved the size of Moscow’s team able to work at its headquarters. Lavrov also announced that NATO’s military liaison and information offices in Moscow would be closed. “As a result of NATO’s deliberate moves, we have practically no conditions for elementary diplomatic work and in response to NATO’s actions we suspend the work of our permanent mission to NATO, including the work of the chief military envoy, probably from Nov. 1. Or it may take several more days,” Lavrov said. The Foreign Ministry said in a separate statement that NATO’s actions “confirm that they are not interested in an equal dialogue and joint work to deescalate military-political tensions. The alliance’s line

towards our country is becoming more and more aggressive. The Russian threat’ is inflated in order to strengthen the internal unity of the alliance, to create the appearance of its relevance’ in modern geopolitical conditions.” Lavrov said that contact between the Western alliance and Moscow could be done through the Russian embassy in Belgium. The Russian mission isn’t based at NATO’s headquarters, but in a leafy neighborhood in the south of the Belgian capital, Brussels. NATO suspended practical cooperation with Russia in 2014 after it annexed Ukraine’s Crimean Peninsula, but has kept channels open for highlevel meetings and for military-to-military cooperation. But the NATO-Russia Council, their preferred foraum, has only met sporadically since then.
Palestinian Prez calls to end Israeli occupation RAMALLAH, OCT 18 (IANS): Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas warned that the situation in the territories “has become unbearable due to the Israeli violations”. He called on the US to turn its words on the cause of Palestine into deeds, and urged the international community to move quickly to end the Israeli occupation of the Palestinian territories, reports Xinhua news agency. Abbas made the remarks during a meeting with Palestinian business people at his office in the West Bank city of Ramallah. The President said that “Israel should stop all its measures against our people in the West Bank, East Jerusalem, and the Gaza Strip”, warning that if Israel rejects the two-state solution “the Palestinians will be obliged to go for other political choices”. On October 2, Abbas had said that one of the choices is to implement the UN Security Council’s resolution passed in 1947, or go to the one democratic state on the land of historic Palestine in which full political and civil rights of the Palestinians are gained.
India, Israel agree to resume Arsonists vandalise 66 houses, torch 20 homes of Hindus in B’desh negotiations on FTA from next month
JERUSALEM, OCT 18 (PTI): India and Israel on Monday agreed to resume negotiations on a Free Trade Agreement (FTA) from next month as the two sides are confident to conclude the long pending deal by June next year. “It will be concluded by June of next year,” External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar announced after he met Alternate Prime Minister and Foreign Min-

Israel has also joined the International Solar Alliance, a global initiative that India has spearheaded, with Jaishankar and Israel’s Energy Minister Karine Elharrar signing on the agreement. damaged and 20 burnt during the attack, the officer said. As many as 52 suspects have been arrested while a manhunt was launched for more suspects under a “combing operation” in collaboration with other security forces, he added. As the police stood guard around the man’s home, the attackers set fire to other homes nearby, the report said. The Fire Service Control Room said that their report from the scene indicates that 29 residential houses, two kitchens, two barns and 20 haystacks belonging to 15 different owners
were torched in Pirganj’s Majhipara, it said, adding that an ‘unruly crowd’ has been identified as the cause of fire. The fire service received a report of the fire at 8:45 PM and finally put it out by 4:10 AM, the report said. The arson incident occurred amid rising communal tension over an alleged blasphemy incident at a Durga Puja venue in Cumilla which led to attacks on Hindu temples and clashes between vandals and the police in Cumilla, Chandpur, Chattogram, Cox’s Bazar, Bandarban, Moulvibazar, Gazipur, Chapainawabganj,
Feni and other districts. Dozens of people have been arrested over the attacks and the spread of communal hatred on social media, the report said. Four assumed Muslim bigots were killed in Haziganj, the worst scene of the violence, on Wednesday and Thursday, while the body of a Hindu devotee was found at a pond in nearby Begumbanj of Noakhali district. Muslim and Hindu protestors took to the streets at different areas of the country, including the capital Dhaka in the past several days. The Bangladesh Hindu-Buddhist-Christial Unity Council said at least 70 puja pavilions and temples were attacked in the previous three days of violence. The council alleges that at least four Hindu devotees have died in the attacks in Chandpur and Noakhali. Meanwhile, the elite anti-crime force Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) has arrested two more men in connection with the looting and vandalism of temples and shops belonging to the
China says it tested hypersonic ‘vehicle’ not ‘missile’ S.Korean, US, Japanese intel
Asked for his reaction to the report, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Zhao Lijian told a media briefing here that a test of a hypersonic vehicle was carried out. “It is a vehicle not a missile,” Zhao said. “As we understand this test, it is just a routine space vehicle test to verify the repeated use of technology of the vehicle. “This is of great significance to reducing the cost and can also provide an affordable and cheap return means for the peaceful use of space for humanity,” he said. Zhao said that many other countries and companies are conducting similar tests. “The remains of the burnt vehicle have fallen into the waters of the high
sea. China will work with the rest of the world to make efforts for the peaceful use of the space,” the Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman said. He reiterated that the test, which was carried out in August, involved a vehicle, not a missile. “My answer is a big yes,” Zhao said when asked if it was a vehicle, not a missile. The US, Russia and China are all developing hypersonic weapons, including glide vehicles that are launched into space on a rocket but orbit the earth under their own momentum, according to the FT report. The missile flies at five times the speed of sound, slower than a ballistic missile. But they do not follow
the fixed parabolic trajectory of a ballistic missile and are manoeuvrable, making them harder to track, the report said. US military officials in recent months have warned about China’s growing nuclear capabilities, particularly after the release of satellite imagery that showed it was building more than 200 intercontinental missile silos. China is not bound by any arms-control deals and has been unwilling to engage the US in talks about its nuclear arsenal and policy, the report added. Meanwhile, the staterun Global Times, in an editorial, said that it was meaningless to discuss the credibility of the FT report. “But it is important to note the unstoppable trend that China is narrowing the gap with the US in some key military technologies as China is continuously developing its economic and technological strength. “China doesn’t need to engage in an “arms race” with the US - it is capable of weakening the US’ overall advantages over China by developing military power at its own pace,” the Global Times editorial said.

BEIJING, OCT 18 (PTI): China on Monday said it recently tested a hypersonic “vehicle” and not a nuclearcapable hypersonic “missile” as reported by a leading British newspaper which also said that the missile missed its target by about two-dozen miles. The Financial Times reported on Sunday that China tested a nuclear-capable hypersonic missile in August that circled the globe before speeding towards its target, demonstrating an advanced space capability that caught US intelligence by surprise. Five people familiar with the test said that the Chinese military launched a rocket that carried a hypersonic glide vehicle which flew through low-orbit space before cruising down towards its target, the FT report said. The missile missed its target by about two-dozen miles, the report said, quoting three people who briefed it on the intelligence. But two said the test showed that China had made astounding progress on hypersonic weapons and was far more advanced than US officials realised, according to the report.

They were handed over to the local police station,” said Imran Khan, assistant director of the paramilitary force’s Legal and Media Wing. Earlier on Saturday, one person was arrested in connection with the attack which took place when the Feni Puja celebration committee and its supporters were preparing to protest against the communal violence in the country. The assailants also vandalised and looted several temples and a number of shops owned by Hindus and torched vehicles. They clashed with the police for about seven hours. Authorities deployed additional police forces and the paramilitary force -Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB), after several temples and businesses owned by Hindus were vandalised and robbed during clashes.

SEOUL, OCT 18 (IANS): The intelligence chiefs of South Korea, the US and Japan will meet in Seoul on Monday behind closed doors for talks on North Korea and other pending issues, according to a source. Park Jie-won, the head of South Korea’s National Intelligence Service (NIS), will meet Avril Haines, the US director of national intelligence, and Hiroaki Takizawa, Japan’s Cabinet intelligence director, Yonhap News Agency quoted the source as saying. The three will meet for the first time since May in Tokyo and are expected to share the assessments of the security situations on the Korean Peninsula, following Pyongyang’s recent series of
missile launches. Pyongyang has remained unresponsive to Washington’s overtures for dialogue, with denuclearization talks having stalled since the no-deal summit between then US President Donald Trump and the North’s leader Kim Jong-un in 2019. The top spy agency officials may also touch on South Korean President Moon Jae-in’s recent proposal to declare a formal end to the 1950-53 Korean War as Seoul ramps up diplomacy to revitalize its drive for lasting peace on the peninsula. The chief nuclear envoys of the three regional powers are scheduled to meet in Washington on Tuesday.

t seems to make sense: Eat fewer calories, and you’ll lose weight. But not all calories are equal. Your body burns them differently, depending on the kind of food you eat, your metabolism, and even the type of organisms living in your gut. A more sustainable plan for a healthy weight: quality foods, exercise, good sleep, and a doctor’s guidance.
urns out you can overclean your body. Washing with soap every day can strip your skin of protective oils, leaving it dry and more prone to infection. And if you’re using antibacterial soap, that risk goes up further -- you can kill off the “good” bacteria on your skin and lower your immunity. Switch to three to four showers a week instead.
ow-fat doesn’t always mean healthy. Often when you subtract fat, you also cut fiber, protein, or amino acids from your diet while adding a lot of carbs. A better plan is to cut trans fats and saturated fats while keeping good fats from foods such as avocados, nuts and seeds, olive oil, and salmon in your diet.
here’s no doubt vitamin C is great for you. It’s an antioxidant; builds skin, blood vessels, and bone; and helps wounds heal. But when it comes to treating colds, there’s no proof it cures symptoms. Keep it in your diet, but take it off your cold remedy list.

few more tips to make sure you get the most benefit from your supplements... 1. Take it at the right time. Standard advice is to take your DHA first thing in the morning. I disagree. I suggest taking it with your meal that has the most amount of healthy fats. This increases absorption. 2. Store your soft gels in the freezer. By the time the supplement starts to break down and release its liquid, it’s further down in the gastrointestinal tract, which helps absorption. 3. Take your omega-3 with vitamin E. Taking vitamin E protects the oil from undergoing potentially damaging oxidation in the body. 4. Add some astaxanthin. ne of my staff, Anne D., came to my office to talk to me. I could tell right away she was upset. Her mother had recently suffered a severe stroke. Anne had been giving her mom omega-3 supplements for weeks. She knew that fatty acids fight brain inflammation and help protect memories. But now her family was telling her to stop. They had read a few articles about a new omega-3 study. One stated that “omega-3 fatty acid supplementation was associated with a significantly increased risk for atrial fibrillation.” Another said supplementing with fish oil increased your risk of atrial fibrillation (AF) by 37%.1,2 It’s true that AF can increase your risk of stroke. So I understood why Anne’s family was worried after reading something like that. But as I told Anne, supplementing with omega-3 – specifically with high doses of the fatty acid DHA – provides the foundation for your brain to repair itself, whether it’s been damaged by a stroke, dementia, or aging. You see, our brains shrink by almost 1% each year. And we lose 500 million brain cells each year. Most of the loss is in the hippocampus, the region of the brain where we process memory, learning, and recognition. This is why we get “senior moments,” brain fog, age-related memory loss, confusion, and changes in mood. Here’s how the DHA in omega-3 works to protect an injured brain... As soon as it detects cell damage, DHA converts into a compound called neuroprotectin D1 (NPD1). This is one of the first lines of defense your body activates when brain cells are threatened.3 NPD1 increases the production and availability of a protein called iduna. This protein accelerates DNA repair and protects against programmed cell death.4 A second 2020 study by the same team of researchers found that using DHA after a stroke: 5 • Enhances neurogenesis (formation of new brain cells) • Increases neurological function • Shrinks the size of damaged brain area

Norrie, Badosa win Indian Wells titles
INDIAN WELLS, OCT 18 (AGENCIES): Great Britain’s world No. 26, Cameron Norrie, became the first male tennis player ranked outside the top25 since Ivan Ljubicic of Croatia (2010) to clinch the BNP Paribas Open title, defeating Nikoloz Basilashvili of Georgia 3-6, 6-4, 6-1 at Indian Wells on Monday . Meanwhile, Paula Badosa survived a stiff challenge from Victoria Azarenka to produce a gutsy 7-6(5) 2-6 7-6(2) win in an epic women’s final match. Norrie’s win over the 29th seed came on the back of 10 winners and 25 unforced errors and handed him a second title this season from his sixth final. Norrie became the first British man to win in Indian Wells. Before this year, he had not won a match in two prior maindraw appearances. He will leave Indian Wells at a career-high No. 16 in the ATP rankings and as the new British No. 1. “I was a little bit uncomfortable. It was

quite windy and… for a stage he went through, he hit so many winners and it was tough for me to get some confidence on my rally balls because the rallies were really short,” Norrie said. “He (Basilashvili) was just blasting winners, so when I made a couple of those big shots at that 5-4 game in the second set it gave me a lot of confidence. “I was able to find my feet and start moving again. I made the rallies physical like I’d been doing all tournament and it worked in my favour,” added Norrie. “ I ’ve b e e n r e a l ly

enjoying my tennis and been enjoying being out on court and competing in the big moments,” Norrie said. E a r l i e r, S p a i n’ s No.21 seed Paula Badosa overcame No.27 Victoria Azarenka of Belarus in a three-set thriller to claim the biggest title of her career. In the first meeting between the two players, Badosa denied the former world No.1 Azarenka in what would have been her third BNP Paribas Open title, the most by any player. Instead, it was the Spaniard who won the second WTA singles title of her season and her career.
The three-hour, fourminute match is this year’s longest WTA singles final. It caps off a career-best week for Badosa, who defeated four top 20 players in a row en route to the championship match, where she beat Azarenka to improve to 2-0 in WTA singles finals. “I think it was a really tough match,” Badosa told wtatennis.com. “I think it was a really good one as well, because she played an amazing level. I think I had to rise (to a) high level every set. At the third set, I think I played my best. It was the only option if I wanted to win, so I’m really proud of it.

Dhoni is the only one who can make me calm: Hardik
MUMBAI, OCT 18 (IANS): The top three Indian snooker players, National champion Aditya Mehta, runner-up Pankaj Advani and losing semifinalist Laxman Rawat, are on a roll as they registered successive victories in their respective first two roundrobin ‘Y Camp (1st leg) matches of World Snooker Qualifiers, a BSFI National Selection Tournament here. Mehta, Advani, and Rawat are representing Petroleum Sports Promotion Board (PSPB). India No. 1 one Mehta started in a rousing manner as he uncorked a break of 94 in the first frame and went on to outshine Neeraj Kumar (RSPB) 4-0 (114(94)14, 60-53, 67-22, 61-09) in his opening best-of-7-frame match late Sunday night. In the second e n c o u n t e r, t h e l a n k y Mumbai-based Mehta faced some resistance from Telegana’s Himanshu Jain before managing to script a tight 4-3 win to complete his second success on Monday afternoon. The 35-year-old Mehta produced another impressive performance and rolled in efforts of 53 (1st

The 36-yearold Advani, who recently won the Asian Snooker Championship, produced another solid performance and compiled breaks of 51 and 70 in the second and third frames to waltz past Neeraj Kumar 4-0 (77-40, 117(54)-00, 83(70)-13 and 59-46).
M e a n w h i l e, P S P B teammate Laxman Rawat, the youngest of the three, was equally impressive as he demolished compatriot Dhvaj Haria (PSPB) 4-1 (74-00, 116(54,58)-00, 6300, 14-61, 71-00) in the first round encounter. DUBAI, OCT 18 (IANS): Star Indian all-rounder Hardik Pandya has lavished praise on MS Dhoni while sharing his close relationship with the former captain and the current mentor of the national team. Pandya explained how and when Dhoni provided him the kind of support which was required at certain stages during his career. “He knows what kind of an individual I am. He knows me quite deep. I am very close to him. He is the only person who can make me calm. When all this happened, he knew that I needed support. I just needed a shoulder, which he provided multiple times in my cricketing career,” Pandya told ESPNcricinfo. com. “I never saw him as MS Dhoni the greatest. For me, Mahi is my brother. I respect and admire the fact that he was there when I needed him the most,” he added. This would be India’s first World Cup campaign since Dhoni retired in 2020 and the side will open its campaign against Pakistan on October 24 here.
Denmark Open: Sindhu eyes good outing on return ODENSE, OCT 18 (PTI): Double Olympic medallist and reigning world champion P V Sindhu will look for a good outing as she returns to competitive action after a break, at the Denmark Open World Tour Super 1000 tournament beginning on Tuesday. Sindhu, a bronze medallist at the Tokyo Olympics, had taken a break due to the hectic schedule during the Games, but she would be itching to make a winning return to the USD 850,000 event, which will also restart the BWF World Tour following a suspension due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Also in action will be London Olympics bronze medallist Saina Nehwal, who has recovered from her groin injury, which had forced her to retire midway through her first match at the Uber Cup Final last week. While Sindhu, seeded fourth, will look for a rampaging start when she opens against Turkey’s Neslihan Yigit, Saina will have to work hard to get past Japan’s Aya Ohori in her opening round. All eyes will also be on Chirag Shetty and Satwiksairaj Rankireddy as the seventh seeded Indian pair open its campaign against English combination of Callum Hemming and Steven Stallwood. The duo has been in impressive form, having won all its four matches at the Thomas Cup final in Aarhus, Denmark. In the men’s singles, young Lakshya Sen, who
finished second best at Dutch Open on Sunday, will look to continue his good run when he faces compatriot Sourabh Verma in his campaign opener. Lakshya had failed to make the Indian team for the Sudirman Cup and Thomas Cup Final after losing his only match in the trials and would be eager to prove a point. Senior pros Kidambi Srikanth and B Sai Praneeth have looked awfully short of confidence during the Sudirman Cup and Thomas Cup Final and they will look to outwit each other as they face off in the opening round. It will only get harder for the winner, who is
expected to square off against world No. 1 and top seed Kento Momota of Japan in the next round. Sameer Verma, who had a decent outing at Thomas Cup, will eye a good campaign when he opens against Thailand’s Kunlavut Vitidsarn, while former world No. 10 H S Prannoy will look to quickly get into rhythm as he takes on sixth seed Jonatan Christie of Indonesia. F o r m e r Commonwealth Games champion Par upalli Kashyap will have his task cut out against fourth seed Chou Tien Chen of Chinese Taipei. Among other Indians, MR Ar jun and Dhr uv Kapila will look to put up a better show, while Manu Attri and B Sumeeth Reddy too will be seen in action. The women’s doubles pair of N Sikki Reddy and Ashwini Ponnappa and Meghana Jakkampudi and S Ram Poorvisha are also in the fray. Ashwini will pair up with Satwik in the mixed doubles category to face China’s Feng Yan Zhe and Du Yue.

Protest held at Winter Olympics lightning L O N D O N, O C T 1 8 (AGENCIES): The flame for the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics was lit on Monday in a ceremony as human rights activists protested nearby. Several protesters with banners managed to get into the event being held at Greece’s ancient Olympia before being stopped by security. A number of others were reportedly detained by police outside. It is the latest demonstration around the games, which has seen boycott calls by some human rights groups. Some US lawmakers h av e a l s o u r g e d t h e Inter national Olympic Committee (IOC) to postpone and relocate the event from Beijing because of China’s reported human rights abuses. Monday’s ceremony, trailing the start of the games in February, was attended by senior IOC figures including the body’s president, Thomas Bach. Bach expressed confidence the games would go ahead as planned. Speaking at the ceremony on Monday, he

said the event could be an “important moment to bring the world together in a spirit of peace, friendship and solidarity”. The protesters who got access to the ancient site on Monday were seen brandishing a Tibetan flag and a banner that said: “No genocide games.” China has long been accused of suppressing cultural and religious freedom in Tibet, a remote a n d m a i n ly B u d d h i s t region. The government denies the accusations and says Tibet has developed considerably under its rule. The Associated Press
news agency says the protesters climbed over a fence to enter the grounds of the event, which was being held under heavy security. The ceremony itself was not interrupted by the demonstration. The event was being held with a limited audience, including Greek President Katerina Sakellaropoulou, because of the coronavirus pandemic. The f lame will be handed over to a delegation from Beijing 2022 on Tuesday and is expected to arrive in the Chinese capital on Wednesday.

Lewandowski made it 2-0 at the half-hour mark when a Bayern counterattack allowed left back Alphonso Davies to dribble his way into the box towards the Polish striker, who simply stuck a leg out to tap the ball into the net. Bayern then scored three goals in three minutes with Thomas Mueller scoring from close range before Gnabry scored twice, benefiting from a Mueller

Leverkusen substitute Lucas Alario also had the ball in the net in the dying stages but the goal was ruled out for offside. “The first goal and the seven minutes after that destroyed us,” Hradecky said. “ E ve r yo n e h a s t o look in the mirror and ask themselves if they worked enough for the team today. LAHORE, OCT 18 (IANS): Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Chairman Ramiz Raja has, after meeting with Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) President Sourav Ganguly and Secretary Jay Shah, said that a cricketing bond needs to be created between the two countries. He added that lots of work will be needed in reinvigorating cricket between Pakistan and India. Raja had met Ganguly and Shah on the sidelines of the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) Executive Board meeting on Friday in Dubai. “I met with BCCI President Sourav Ganguly and secretary Jay Shah on the sidelines of the ACC meetings. We need to create a cricketing bond, while I have also believed that politics should stay away from sport as much as possible and this has always been our stance. A lot of work needs to be done to revitalise Pakistan-India cricket but there needs to be some comfort level between the two boards and then we can see how far we can go. So overall, we had a good

discussion,” said Raja in a statement issued by PCB on Monday. Raja informed that the 2023 Asia Cup in Pakistan will be a 50-over competition. “The ACC has agreed and approved that the 2023 event in Pakistan will be a 50-over competition and will be held in September. This aligns very nicely with the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023, which will be held in October and November. We are looking forward to hosting this tournament in Pakistan and I am confident it will be a well-organised event because this is what the fans want.” “The ACC has also c o n f i r m e d n ex t ye a r ’s

Ta l k i n g a b o u t t h e ACC, Raja said, “The ACC was set up to create a unified approach and collective stance so that we had one voice and if there was a situation, all stood together. I would like to see our relationship with other boards and the ACC be strong so that if there is an issue like we had with the withdrawal of a couple of sides, a strong and joint statement could come out from the ACC platform.” K Y M C

T20 WC: Ireland beat Netherlands by 7 wickets Sri Lanka thrash Namibia by 7 wkts Campher claims four wickets in four balls
ABU DHABI, OCT 18 (PTI): Johannesburg-born seamer Curtis Campher became only the third b ow l e r t o c l a i m f o u r wickets in four balls in T20Is as a superior Ireland beat Netherlands by seven wickets in their first round Group A T20 World Cup match here on Monday. Thanks to Campher’s exploits with the white ball, Ireland bundled out Netherlands for 106 after the Dutch had decided to bat. Ireland chased down the target with as many as 29 balls to spare at the Sheikh Zayed Stadium. Gareth Delany (44) and Paul Stirling (30 not out) were the significant contributors with the bat for the Irish team that had lost its T20 World Cup games to the same opponents in 2014 and 2016. He was bowling his second over for the day, having gone for 12 runs first up. Ackermann was out caught behind on review, having played an attempted

The seasoned Te n D o e s c h a t e, b e s t remembered for his incredible century against England in the 2011 World Cup, was out for a duck, trapped in front by a full and straight one. Netherlands were in all sorts of trouble at 51 for six after Campher’s multiple blows but opener Max ODowd (51) battled on amid the slide at the other end. During his 51ball knock, ODowd hit seven boundaries. The day, however, belonged to Campher who had started poorly in his spell, got a lucky breakthrough down the
leg side before claiming his hat-trick, only the second player after former Australia speedster Brett Lee to achieve the feat in a T20 World Cup. I n t h e n ex t b a l l , Campher did what only two people could do before him in T20 international cricket before him, joining Lasith Malinga and Rashid Khan to take four wickets in successive balls. ABU DHABI, OCT 18 (PTI): Former champions Sri Lanka overcame initial hiccups to subdue an inexperienced yet spirited Namibia by seven wickets, beginning their quest to make the Super 12 stage of the T20 World Cup in right earnest, here on Monday. Sri Lankan bowlers dominated the inexperienced Namibian line-up to bundle them out for a paltry 96 after inviting them to bat and then overhauled the target with 6.3 overs to spare in a Group A match of the first round. The Namibian created a few ripples when they got rid of Pathum Nissanka (5), Kusal Perra (11) and explosive Dinesh Chandimal (5) inside Powerplay overs. H oweve r, Av i s h k a Fernando (30) and talented Bhanuka Rajapakse (42) steered the 2014 champions through with their confident knocks. While Fernando relied more on placement and timing, Rajapaksa was all brawn, striking with great power as the duo put paid to any hopes the Namibian would have entertained after the early strikes. E a r l i e r, s p i n n e r s Mahesh Theekshana (3/25) and Wanindu Hasaranga (2/24), one of world’s top spinners, proved too hot for the Namibian batters, who struggled to find a way past the Lankan attack. Only three Namibian batters reached double-digit figures after they were sent into bat. Craig Williams (29 off 36 balls) and skipper
Gerhard Erasmus (20 off 19 balls) steadied the ship with a 39-run partnership for the third wicket. However, the fall of Erasmus to pacer Lahiru Kumara sparked a collapse. The uproar to opt out of the match comes on the heels of the targeted killings of Army personnel and civilians in Jammu and Kashmir in the last few days. Pakistan has been constantly fighting battles with India at the border and keeping this in mind the Indian fans are asking the team to not play the contest and set an example. Netizens are tagging the Indian cricket board

Now. Union minister Giriraj Singh also said the match to be held in Dubai on October 24 should be reconsidered as the ties between both countries are “not good”. In 2019, a similar situation had risen ahead of India’s match against Pakistan in the ODI World Cup. After the Pulwama attack that witnessed the death of 40 Indian CRPF personnel, there were several demands to cancel the match. BCCI president Sourav Ganguly had said back then, “I agree that after this attack, India should not only stop playing cricket, hockey or football with Pakistan but should cut all ties with them.”

The 18-year-old Fati made his first start for Barcelona after a long injury layoff on Sunday, scoring a goal and earning his team a penalty as the Catalan club halted its losing streak by rallying to beat Valencia 3-1 in the Spanish league. Memphis Depay and Philippe Coutinho also scored for Barcelona as it moved to seventh place, five points behind leader Real Sociedad and with a game in hand. Fati returned to action last month after being sidelined for more than 10 months because of a knee injury, coming off the bench in three straight matches before getting his first start on Sunday and

giving fans more hope that the club can rebuild around him after Messi’s departure to Paris SaintGermain. He had already
scored a few minutes after entering the game against Levante. Barcelona was coming off two defeats before the
international break _ 2-0 at Atletico Madrid in the league and 3-0 at Benfica in the Champions League. It had won only once in
its last six matches in all competitions. Barcelona has begun a three-game home stint that Koeman called key to getting the team back on track. It will next play a critical Champions League game against Dynamo Kyiv on Wednesday and then the first “clasico” of the season against Real Madrid. The loss extended Valencia’s winless streak to five matches. It dropped to ninth place in the league. Jose Luis Gaya opened the scoring for the visitors with a powerful long-range shot five minutes into the match at the Camp Nou Stadium, but Fati equalized from outside the area in the 13th and won the penalty kick converted by Depay in the 41st. Valencia complained about the penalty call, saying Gaya touched the
ball before Fati fell inside the area. Coutinho, marred by injuries since returning to Barcelona, sealed the victory from close range in the 85th for his first goal with the Catalan club in nearly a year. American defender Sergino Dest made the pass for the Brazilian. Dest came off in the final minutes to allow the debut of Sergio Aguero, who was signed by Barcelona from Manchester City for this season but was yet to play as he had been recovering from injury. Barcelona is two points behind Madrid, S ev i l l a , O s a s u n a a n d defending champion Atletico Madrid. Madrid and Atletico had their weekend games postponed because some players were on international duty with their national teams.
