According to a statement released by the Ministr y of Home Affairs (MHA), the Disturbed Area Notification, which was in force in the whole of Nagaland from 1995, was being withdrawn from 15 police stations in seven districts in Nagaland with effect from April 1, 2022. of 72 police stations in total of 16 districts in the state of Nagaland. It was learnt that notification would be fully removed from Tuensang, Shamator and Tseminyu districts and partially from Kohima, Wokha, Longleng
and Mokokchung districts. Announcing the government’s decision, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, in a series of tweets, said: “In a significant step, GoI (Government of India) under the decisive leadership of PM Shri @Nar-
endraModi Ji has decided to reduce disturbed areas under Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) in the states of Nagaland, Assam and Manipur after decades.” The home minister said the reduction in ar-
eas under AFSPA is the result of the improved security situation and fasttracked development due to consistent efforts of the Modi government. He said several agreements were signed with militant groups to end insurgency and bring lasting peace to the Northeast. “Thanks to PM @NarendraModi Ji’s unwavering commitment, our North-Eastern region, which was neglected for decades is now witnessing a new era of peace, prosperity and unprecedented development. I congratulate the people of North East on this momentous occasion,” Shah said. SAPO temporarily suspends indefinite bandh
DIMAPUR, MAR 31 (NPN): Southern Angami Public Organization (SAPO) has decided to temporarily suspends the ongoing indefinite bandh with effect from 12pm march 31, 2022. In a press release, SAPO president Kevipodi Sophie and general secretary Swelul Pucho stated that the decision was taken unanimously after deliberation with its governing body and frontal organizations on March 31, 2022. SAPO said the decision arrived based on the Tenyimi Peoples’ Organization (TPO) “Ultimatum on Manipur to withdraw police forces from Kezoltsa and
request to SAPO to lift the blockade” and also request from Angami Public Organization (APO) to lift the indefinite bandh for upcoming 50 years Celebration of APO Golden Jubilee to be held on April 8, 2022. SAPO has, however, affirmed that lifting of indefinite bandh was “only temporary measures.” It warned that, if the Government of Manipur failed to adhere to the TPO ultimatum served on Manipur government, then SAPO would initiate its own course of action, and the Government of Manipur would be held responsible. On Wednesday, the TPO urged the Manipur government to withdraw its
armed personnel and stop all activities in the disputed area at the earliest, failing which the TPO and its constituent organizations would initiate “course of actions.” TPO also appealed to the SAPO to lift its ongoing indefinite bandh. NAPO suppor ts SAPO bandh: Northern Angami Public Organisation (NAPO) has extended support to the bandh imposed by SAPO against the Manipur government’s violation of status quo. In a press release, NAPO Zeneituo Yano and secretar y Lhousakuolie Metha maintained that it was the right of any party to express their resentment
in any non-violent manner when their “legitimate right is subdued by force.” Affirming to stand alongside the SAPO, the NAPO said it condemned the actions of the Manipur government for “unnecessarily creating fizzle” between the two friendly Tenyimia families. NAPO has, therefore, demanded that Manipur government to immediately withdraw armed personnel and dismantle permanent structure from the disputed site (Kezoltsa) so as to ease the situation. NAPO also appealed to the Tenyimia People’s Organisation to amicably settle dispute at the earliest.

The angry mob later torched a police vehicle parked inside the police station premises. On March 7, a young woman had gone missing from a tea garden area at Injan village. They bur ned down a police vehicle,” SP Gambo said. “We are investigating the incident and will initiate action as per the law,” he added. Throwing light on the crime, Gambo said the victim’s body has been recovered in a total decomposed state. “Based on leads from her mobile phone CDR, we detained a person who was using a mobile in which the victim’s sim was used. He led the police team to the person who had sold the mobile phone to him, who along with his accomplish had murdered the girl. They both have been arrested.” The accused have been identified as Dinesh Mardi, 22, and Arun Kisku, 20, both hailing from Assam, and were working at a tea factory in Kharsang. “The role of both the accused in the murder had been confirmed and the victim’s mobile phone has also been recovered from their possession,” said Gambo. “We are awaiting the post-mortem examination report to confirm whether it is a rape and murder case.” The victim’s elder sister had lodged a missing p e r s o n’s c o m p l a i n t following which the police had launched a search operation.

Boundary agreement signed on set principles, says M’laya CM Correspondent SHILLONG, MAR 31: Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma on Thursday said that the border agreement with Assam was signed based on set principles that were agreed by the two states and these principles can’t be changed. “We cannot change our principles as per our needs and desires. The principle was based mainly on the will of the people of a particular area and their ethnicity. A principle has to apply both for Meghalaya and Assam,” he said. Conrad’s statement is significant after the opposition Trinamool Congress (TMC) and Leader of Opposition Mukul Sangma said the piecemeal solution to the vexed boundary dispute will spell disaster for Meghalaya. “The agreement is dangerous, insensitive and in complete disregard to the concern of the people and the state,” Mukul had said. However, the Chief Minister dismissed the opposition TMC’s claim

Tripura BJP president Manik Saha elected to Rajya Sabha AGARTALA, MARCH 31 (IANS): Tripura BJP president Manik Saha on Thursday was elected to Rajya Sabha in the lone seat of the saffron partyruled northeastern state. After the counting of votes in the evening, Saha, a dental surgeon-turnedpolitician, secured 40 votes while his rival -- CPI-M candidate Bhanulal Saha, bagged 15 seats. Four seats were lying vacant in the 60-member Tripura assembly. Re t u r n i n g o f f i c e r of the Rajya Sabha poll, S. Mog communicated the result to the Election Commission, which would subsequently officially announce the result in Delhi. Of the 40 votes, 33 belonged to BJP and seven to BJP’s ally Indigenous People’s Front of Tripura (IPFT). I P F T M L A Brishaketu Debbar ma did not cast his vote on Thursday as he resigned from the Assembly in June last year and joined the TIPRA (Tipraha Indigenous Progressive Regional Alliance) headed
Manik Saha by Tripura’s royal scion, Pradyot Bikram Manikya Deb Barman. D e b b a r m a ’s resignation was, however, not yet accepted by the Assembly speaker Ratan Chakraborty due to some procedural reasons. The BJP for the first time in the electoral history of Tripura won the lone Rajya Sabha seat even as the party succeeded in the Lok Sabha elections in 2019 by winning all the two seats in the lower house of parliament. Saha’s win to the upper house of parliament was almost certain as the ruling party along with its ally -- IPFT -- has the strength of 41 MLAs in the 60-member house while the opposition CPI-M has 15
legislators after the death of the party legislator and former Assembly Speaker Ramendra Chandra Debnath. Dissident BJP legislators Sudip Roy Barman and Ashis Kumar Saha resigned from the assembly last month and joined the Congress. Tripura Assembly S p e a k e r i n Ja nu a r y disqualified another dissident BJP MLA Ashis Das after he joined the Tr i n a m o o l C o n g r e s s, openly criticising the party and top leaders. Congratulating the newly elected RS member Saha, Tripura Chief Minister Biplab Ku m a r D e b t we e t e d : “Heartiest congratulations to Dr Manik Saha for being elected as the first BJP Rajya Sabha MP from Tripura. I believe you will work sincerely in the Upper House of Parliament for the welfare of the people of Tripura under the guidance of PM Narendra Modi ji.” S a h a wa s e l e c t e d president of the BJP’s Tripura unit in January 2020, replacing Deb.

The lawyer, Satish Uke, whose house located in Parvati Nagar area of Nagpur was searched, was later taken to the Enforcement Directorate’s (ED) office in the city along with his brother for interrogation by the the central agency officials, Uke’s close aide said. The ED began searching Uke’s house around 6 am amid tight security by the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF). Uke has filed several petitions in courts against BJP leaders, especially former Maharashtra chief minister Fadnavis. In one of his applications, he had sought criminal proceedings against Fadnavis for the “non-disclosure” of criminal cases in his election affidavit. Uke has alleged that the BJP leader filed a false affidavit in 2014 by hiding two criminal cases - of cheating and forgery - registered against him in 1996 and 1998.
Arvind Kejriwal power at the Centre, resorts to such hooliganism in the capital, it will spread a bad message among people. People will think this is the right way (to deal with anything),” he said at the event. Kejriwal also said the country cannot progress in such a scenario. People will have to work with love, then only the nation can prosper, he said. “We have already wasted 75 years by doing dirty politics, indulging in fighting and hooliganism. Now if we want to take our country forward, make it an India of 21st century, then we will have to work together with love,” Kejriwal said. Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia on Wednesday had lashed out at the BJP, alleging it was a “conspiracy to kill” Kejriwal as the saffron party is unable to defeat the Aam
Aadmi Party in the elections. The BJP has been targeting Kejriwal after he took a swipe at the saffron party for promoting the film. It has demanded an apology from the chief minister, saying he has insulted Kashmiri Hindus with his remarks about the movie. The BJYM protest outside the CM’s residence was being led by its national president and MP Tejasvi Surya. The BJP has accused the AAP of scripting a drama and playing the “victim card” after the ‘’public anger’’ against Kejriwal’s remarks “mocking” displaced Kashmiri Pandits. Surya had asserted that the “victims in this issue are Kashmiri Hindus and not the Aam Aadmi Party and Kejriwal’’. “It is a time-tested tactic of the urban Naxals. Our protest is not against any party and this is not merely regarding ‘The Kashmir Files’. This protest is against the inhuman mindset of Kejriwal who denies the Hindu genocide in Kashmir,” Surya had said. The Delhi Police on Thursday also arrested eight people in connection with alleged vandalism at Kejriwal’s residence here.

Indian leaders will hold discussion with Lavrov over the issue. India decided to upgrade its military infrastructure when the country was locked in a major face-off with China along the Line of Actual Control in July 2020. The threat of twofront war - from China and Pakistan - has made India go for large scale arms deals and Russia is still one of India’s largest arms suppliers. India’s defence ministry has recently reviewed the status of current deals with Russia and how the war is going to impact the military capabilities. In December 2021, India and Russia signed more than two dozen deals across a variety of sectors and had also inked a 10-year defence cooperation pact.
LUCKNOW, MAR 31 (PTI): Pragatisheel Samajwadi Party (Lohia) chief Shivpal Singh Yadav’s recent meeting with Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has triggered speculation he may quit the SP-led alliance to cross over to the BJP. The speculation gained strength after the sulking socialist leader Shivpal Yadav recently met Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath amid reports of strains in the SP-led alliance. A key leader of the opposition alliance Om Prakash Rajbhar, however, sought to downplay the issue saying there are “some issues” within their family and he was making all efforts to ensure that they remain together. Reports suggested that the distance between Shivpal Yadav and Akhilesh Yadav has been widening ever since the former was not invited to the meeting of newly elected SP MLAs on March 26. PSPL chief Shivpal Yadav had contested the recent state polls on the bicycle symbol of the SP. He had skipped the opposition alliance’s Monday meeting called by Akhilesh Yadav and also “delayed” taking oath as a member of the new assembly, indicating that all is not well between the
Shivpal Singh Yadav uncle-nephew duo. Besides Shivpal Yadav, the alliance’s other key leader Pallavi Patel of Apna Dal (Kamerwadi), who had humbled Deputy Chief Minister Keshav Prasad Maurya from Sirathu seat, had also not attended the meeting of the SP-led coalition partners on March 28. Shivpal Yadav took oath on Wednesday in the chamber of Speaker Satish Mahana and later went to 5, Kalidas Marg residence of the CM to meet Adityanath, fuelling speculation of his changing sides. The crossover, if materializes, would not surprise many as on many occasions, Akhilesh Yadav himself has accused his uncle of being in touch with Adityanath and soft towards the saffron party. Talks are doing the rounds in the political circles that as part of the plan, the BJP might send Shivpal Yadav to Rajya Sabha and give
his Jaswantnagar seat to his son Aditya Yadav. Akhilesh Yadav had denied a ticket to Aditya Yadav in the February-March elections. Eleven Rajya Sabha seats would be falling vacant from UP between April and July. Shivpal Yadav himself has not been speaking much. On Wednesday he had told the media persons that he would tell everything at the right time. But, Rajbhar is still optimistic that things would be sorted out and the speculation of Shivpal Yadav saying goodbye to them would prove wrong. Rajbhar, who heads Suheldev Bhartiya Samaj Party (SBSP), a constituent of the opposition grouping in UP, on Thursday said he was making all-out efforts to remove differences in the family. “It is a matter of the family, how much can we do in the tiff within the family? But it has been my effort that all should remain together and work together,” Rajbhar told PTI. “I will talk to both Shivpal ji and Akhilesh ji,” he said adding, “my effort is to placate Shivpal ji, we can only make efforts in this regard. I have also talked to Akhilesh ji and he has also agreed that I should talk to Shivpal Singh today itself.”

NEW DELHI, MAR 31 (PTI): NSA Ajit Doval on Thursday held talks with his Dutch counterpart Geoffrey Van Leeuwen focusing on bilateral defence and security cooperation as well as the crisis in Ukraine. The visit to India by Leeuwen, the Security and Foreign Policy Advisor to the prime minister of the Netherlands, comes ahead of a trip to that country by President Ram Nath Kovind. Official sources said Doval and Leeuwen had intensive discussion covering a wide range of bilateral issues as well as major regional and global developments. “Both of them underlined the importance for India and the Netherlands to remain engaged on these issues and intensify their

NEW DELHI, MAR 31 (PTI): Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Thursday said he can lay down his life for the country, a day after members of the BJP’s youth wing vandalised property outside his residence and the AAP alleged that a conspiracy was being hatched to “assassinate” its national convenor. Without naming the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Kejriwal further said such “hooliganism” by a party in power at the Centre will not help in the progress of the nation and send out a wrong message to the people. The BJP’s youth wing Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM) allegedly damaged property outside Kejriwal’s residence in Civil Lines on Wednesday during their protest against the chief minister’s remarks on ‘The Kashmir Files’ film. “Arvind Kejriwal is not important but the country is. I am a very small person and a common man. I can lay down my life for the nation. India will not progress through such hooliganism,” Kejriwal said at an event to flag off e-autos at IP Depot here. “If the biggest party of the world, which is in
NEW DELHI, MARCH 31 (IANS): Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov landed in New Delhi on Thursday evening to hold talks with Indian counterpart S. Jaishankar over crude oil offer, rupee-ruble payment and arms deals. It is the first high-level visit from Russia after the country went to war with Ukraine. Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov arrived in Delhi at 6 pm. Lavrov would be meeting Jaishankar on Friday afternoon and by 5.50 p.m. he would be flying for Moscow. As the US-led sanctions and a few Russian banks being removed from the SWIFT messaging system, Lavrov will deliberate upon the rupee-ruble denominated payment method for crude oil which Russia has offered to India. New Delhi is not averse to buying Russian oil at a discounted rate. It is also stated that the Reserve Bank of India senior officers are meeting their Russian counterparts to discuss the rupee-ruble payment. Since the start of war, India has been facing pressure from the West and its allies to take a stronger stand against Russia. uel prices continue to soar as the state-owned oil companies increased the rates for the ninth time in the last 10 days and as a result of which, petrol and diesel rates soared higher heightening fears of a cascading effect on all items in the market. According to the latest price notification, the petrol and diesel prices have been increased by 80 paise, taking the overall increase to Rs. 6.40 per litre. The prices of petrol, diesel and cooking gas rose immediately after elections to five state assemblies concluded. Fuel prices remained frozen for nearly four and half months during the election season. Even the price of cooking gas has also been increased by Rs 50. A 14.2-kg non-subsidised LPG cylinder will now cost Rs 949.50 in the national capital. In Assam price of petrol on March 15 was Rs. 95.58 and gradually rose to Rs.99.89 and presently the price of a litre is Rs.101.67. After the series of hikes, in Dimapur petrol is Rs.103.66; in Kohima it is Rs.104.77 and highest at Tuensang at Rs.107.23. Ten days earlier, petrol was priced at Rs.96.92 and touched Rs.100.28 on March 26 . Similarly diesel has touched Rs.90.12 in Dimapur from the previous Rs.84.49 on March 22. The price of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) has also been raised by Rs 50 per 14.2 kg cylinder in the first hike since October, as international crude prices have surged due to the war in Ukraine. The main factor for the rising prices has been the government’s disinclination against lowering taxes. In May 2014 when UPA left office and Modi took power, the cost of the Indian basket of crude oil stood at $113 per barrel. However, within six months by January 2015, the crude oil price fell to $50 per barrel. It also further crashed to $29 in January 2016. However, the Modi government did not slash prices to help customers. It may also be recalled, that while the COVID-19 pandemic pushed several into penury, the Modi government between March and May 2020 raised excise duty on petrol by Rs 13 per litre and diesel by Rs 15 per litre. In fact, due to the pandemic, the price of India’s crude basket crashed to $19 in April 2020. Although oil marketing companies are allowed to fix their own prices based on the international scenario, the major reason for skyrocketing prices is due to taxes levied by the Union government and states. The price of a litre of petrol or diesel is almost half the price being sold. This is because of various taxes imposed by the Centre as well as the states. This had led to many economists and opposition leaders asking the government to bring oil and gas under GST. The government suffices most of its revenue requirements by levies on fuel items. Under GST, the petrol and diesel prices under the present circumstances will become substantially cheaper. The GST regime provides five different taxation rates of 0, 5, 12, 18 and 28 per cent. Petrol and diesel can’t be expected to be taxed below/more than 28 per cent in the current scenario as it is major revenue part of Government. This incidence may not give any chance for price relaxation as the tax scenario would become equal to what is currently applicable. Also, the Centre will tend to lose Rs. 20,000 crore input tax credit earning by keeping fuels and oils out of the GST.Prices of almost every item in the market is showing an upward trend and if this is not arrested, it would spark serious economic problems.
DailyDevotion Heedfulness or Hypocrisy in Ourselves?
If anyone sees his brother sinning a sin which does not lead to death, he will ask, and He will give him life for those who commit sin not leading to death. —1 John 5:16
If we are not heedful and pay no attention to the way the Spirit of God works in us, we will become spiritual hypocrites. We see where other people are failing, and then we take our discernment and turn it into comments of ridicule and criticism, instead of turning it into intercession on their behalf. God reveals this truth about others to us not through the sharpness of our minds but through the direct penetration of His Spirit. If we are not attentive, we will be completely unaware of the source of the discernment God has given us, becoming critical of others and forgetting that God says, “…he will ask, and He will give him life for those who commit sin not leading to death.” Be careful that you don’t become a hypocrite by spending all your time trying to get others right with God before you worship Him yourself. One of the most subtle and illusive burdens God ever places on us as saints is this burden of discernment concerning others. He gives us discernment so that we may accept the responsibility for those souls before Him and form the mind of Christ about them (see Philippians 2:5). We should intercede in accordance with what God says He will give us, namely, “life for those who commit sin not leading to death.” It is not that we are able to bring God into contact with our minds, but that we awaken ourselves to the point where God is able to convey His mind to us regarding the people for whom we intercede. Can Jesus Christ see the agony of His soul in us? He can’t unless we are so closely identified with Him that we have His view concerning the people for whom we pray. May we learn to intercede so wholeheartedly that Jesus Christ will be completely and overwhelmingly satisfied with us as intercessors.

Recognising the rights of people with autism APRIL 2 IS WORLD AUTISM AWARENESS DAY
O
ver the past decade, major progress has been made towards increasing access to education generally, as well as for persons with autism specifically. Sustainable Development Goal 4 – Quality Education The 17 Sustainable Development Goals adopted by world leaders at the United Nations in 2015 provide a blueprint for addressing the major challenges facing the world, including inequality. Sustainable Development Goal 4 (SDG 4) focuses on ensuring inclusive and equitable quality education and promoting lifelong learning opportunities for all, as the foundation for improving people’s lives and reducing inequalities. The specific targets for SDG 4 refer to the need to ensure “equal access to all levels of education and vocational training” for persons with disabilities and building and upgrading education facilities that are disability sensitive and that provide “inclusive and effective learning environments for all.” In this respect, the SDGs echo the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities. Article 24 of the Convention recognizes that persons with disabilities have the right to inclusive, quality
education on an equal basis with others and that reasonable accommodation of the individual’s requirements should be provided. The 2022 World Autism Awareness Day observance This year‘s observance will address inclusive education in the context of SDG 4 - the promise and reality - through a virtual event that will include a moderated panel discussion, along with brief presentations by self-advocates, educators and other experts. The theme of inclusive education is intrinsically linked with the focus of last year’s WAAD observance, “Inclusion in the Workplace”. Panelists in last year’s event emphasized how crucial it is to foster inclusive quality education for people on the autism spectrum so that they can fulfill their potential and achieve sustainable success in the labour market. In this respect, inclusive education is the key to the transformative promise of the Sustainable Development Goals, to leave no one behind. The event is organized by the UN Department of Global Communications and UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs, with the support of civil society partners including the Autistic Self Advocacy Network, the Global
Autism Project and the Specialisterne Foundation. Throughout its history, the United Nations family has celebrated diversity and promoted the rights and well-being of persons with disabilities, including learning differences and developmental disabilities. In 2008, the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities entered into force, reaffirming the fundamental principle of universal human rights for all. Its purpose is to promote, protect and ensure the full and equal enjoyment of all human rights and fundamental freedoms by all persons with disabilities, and to promote respect for their inherent dignity. It is a vital tool to foster an inclusive and caring society for all and to ensure that all children and adults with autism can lead full and meaningful lives. The United Nations General Assembly unanimously declared 2 April as World Autism Awareness Day to highlight the need to help improve the quality of life of those with autism so they can lead full and meaningful lives as an integral part of society. Autism is a lifelong neurological condition that manifests during early childhood, irrespective of gender, race or socio-economic status. The term Autism Spectrum refers to a range
of characteristics. Appropriate support, accommodation and acceptance of this neurological variation allow those on the Spectrum to enjoy equal opportunity, and full and effective participation in society. Autism is mainly characterized by its unique social interactions, non-standard ways of learning, keen interests in specific subjects, inclination to routines, challenges in typical communications and particular ways of processing sensory information. The rate of autism in all regions of the world is high and the lack of understanding has a tremendous impact on the individuals, their families and communities. The stigmatization and discrimination associated with neurological differences remain substantial obstacles to diagnosis and therapies, an issue that must be addressed by both public policy-makers in developing nations, as well as donor countries. History of World Autism Awareness Day Autism Spectrum Disorder is a developmental disorder characterized by behavioral and communicational affections that impact a person’s ability to navigate social interactions and also causes repetitive and restricted behavior.
The first historical appearance of the word “Autism” was made in 1911 by the psychiatrist Eugen Bleuler, who used the term to describe a specific cluster of symptoms that were considered simple symptoms of schizophrenia as an extreme social withdrawal. In that order, it was in 1943, when pediatric psychiatrist Dr. Leo Kanner characterized Autism as a social and emotional disorder in his article “Autistic Disturbances of Affective Contact”, and in 1944 Hans Asperger published his “Autism Psychopathology Article” where he described autism as a disorder of normal intelligence children who have difficulties with social and communication skills. These articles were an important contribution to the studies that helped to classified Autism as a disorder separate from schizophrenia in 1980. With the continuous investigation and research on autism, World Autism Awareness Day was set to April 2 of each year by the “United Nations General Assembly” on “Resolution 62/139” and adopted on December 18 of 2007, to encourage member states to take action in raising awareness about people with autism spectrum disorder and support the research finding new ways to improve
wellness and inclusion. Finally, the notion of autism as a spectrum was developed in 2013 by the “American Psychiatric Association” in the fifth edition of the “Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders” by combining all subcategories of autism and related conditions into one unified category, including varied characteristics, severity, and presentation of the symptoms. World Autism Awareness Day (WAAD) aims to put a spotlight on the hurdles that people with autism and others living with autism face every day. As a growing global health issue owing to its increasing exposure in the press and common knowledge, autism is an issue that is only gaining more understanding and WAAD activities are planned every year to further increase and develop world knowledge of children and adults who have autism spectrum disorder (ASD). What’s more, World Autism Awareness Day goes one step further to celebrate the unique talents of those with autism, while putting a huge focus on the warm embrace and welcome that these skills deserve through community events around the globe. T
he Naga political movement was conceived with the ideology to work for the rights of Nagas, inclusive of all Naga inhabited areas. The NSCN/GPRN, since its inception have stood firm on the belief and principle of a unified Naga Nation, with the publicly stated commitment of defending our inherent political rights. NSCN/GPRN (K) led by Gen. Niki Sumi and Ino Startson Lamkang is not under any illusion or confusion as to our objective of attaining an inclusive political goal spanning across the Naga inhabited areas. Our collective leadership has always maintained the stance of NSCN/GPRN that we heed to the clarion call of the Nagas for an inclusive political settlement, discarding the artificial boundaries imposed against our will by the colonialist. It’s a sad state of affair to learn of the divisive and disintegrating policy of some misguided groups such as ZUF who have started to divide the Nagas lands with jurisdictional divisions based on so called Indian states of Assam, Arunachal, Manipur and
Nagaland. The ZUF making frivolous statements mentioning ‘Nagaland based faction’ and along thesame lines using ‘jurisdiction’ and ‘infiltration’ reeks of Indian policy of divide and rule. What is the modus operandi of the ZUF? Is the ZUF challenging the wishes and aspiration of the Naga people? Their approach to Naga people’s aspiration is subtly inclined towards the divisive policy of the adversaries that have created artificial boundary demarcation which geographically andphysically divide our people; adamantly making attempts to disintegrate our people andlands. How will Naga people attain its political glory, if Nagas remain divided? All section of Naga society should seriously ponder on the ZUF’s jurisdictional view of the Nagas and our lands; when all people desire to live as one people with one common goal toachieve. Naga Political Groups must not encourage the notion of maintaining its jurisdiction of operation or function. The NSCN/ GPRN has made immense
sacrifices and contributions in our quest to ascertain and achieve inherent and inalienable political rights, not for a particular Naga tribe or aparticular jurisdiction but for the entire Naga people across all Naga inhabited lands. Creation of self claimed jurisdictions and areas for self-benefit with vested motives will not do anygood towards building a nation of Unified Nagas, but will only lead to fragmentation of Naga people. Most NPGs have wrong impression that “yours is ours and mine is mine”. The NSCN/GPRN shall not succumb to the motives of the adversaries which are hell bent to sow discord among the Nagas but will steadfastly follow the common ideology of the Naga people of attaining a common unified Naga nation for Christ. Reiterating our commitment to defend and serve our people, NSCN/GPRN once again pledge our sacrosanct commitment to God and our people for a Nation dedicated to Christ. fter the launch of a long-awaited Anti Corruption Helpline number (95012-00200) in Punjab on the occasion of the Martyrs Day, more than 1.5 lakh complaints were received within a week at its Mohali headquarters through video and audio mode. Just imagine how much the state has been suffering from corrupt practices. The state is deeply immersed in debt, and this situation has been created by its own people. Way back in 2008, I had heard somewhere that in Punjab, if someone wanted to get a project approved, a certain part of the profit was required to be shared with the political bigwigs. The situation kept worsening even after that period. The new government is expected to change the trend, to bring the state economy on the right track. The decision to allow only one pension to the former MLAs of Punjab is also commendable. Otherwise most of the leaders were leaving no stone unturned to loot the government treasury by claiming multiple pensions. The Punjab government is also being hailed for pulling strings on arbitrarily fee hikes by private schools. No school will be allowed to force the parents to buy children’s books and uniforms from a particular shop. The government has set a good example, which should be followed by other states as well. There was no check on corruption in the field of education, which made guardians helpless and no one was listening to their plight. Now the people of Punjab will be able to buy their children’s books and uniforms from any store of their choice. It is another matter that the school may find
some other way to cheat. Haryana is also suffering from the termites of corruption. Ashok Khemka, a senior IAS officer known for his strict decisions, has pointed to bribery of more than Rs 300 crore value, in his letter to the Haryana CM. The letter hints about an alleged bribe of Rs 200 to 500 per square yard. Irregularities have been found in more than 64 thousand registries. More than 50% of these cases are reported from Karnal, Gurgaon and Faridabad districts. If the size of the plot is assumed to be an average of 250 square yards and the bribe amount is at least Rs 200 per square yard, then this amount becomes Rs 300 crore. According to a research by Dr. Kulwinder Singh of University Business School (UBS) of Panjab University, 71% of those going abroad from Punjab are those who take the illegal route. Less educated or semi-skilled Punjabi youth, when not able to migrate in a legal manner, i.e. whose application is rejected, mostly opt for illegal or irregular migration. Of these, 57% migrate to European countries in search of jobs. About 18% go to Arab countries and 11% to Southeast Asian countries like Singapore or Malaysia. Most of them are below 40 years of age and 95% are educated till 12th standard or below. Meanwhile, the US Embassy in New Delhi released its open dose report and revealed that in the 2020-21 session, 9.14 lakh foreign students from 200 countries were studying in the US, of which 20% or about 1.67 lakh students were from India alone. Indian banks can’t ignore persons with disabilities. RBI guidelines exist for a reason
I
n ‘Digital India’, anyone can get a bank account — except people with disabilities. Vidya Anand, mother of a 21-year-old son with autism who lives in Bengaluru, recently approached the Canara Bank to open an account for him. But the bank officials refused her request, saying her son is ‘not normal’. The bank manager told Vidya about a Reserve Bank of India guideline, which he claimed prohibits people with autism to have a bank account. When Vidya asked for more information, the official rudely told her that they open accounts only for ‘Divyang’, which the bank meant for blind people and not others. It was only after local journalists and activists intervened that the bank manager tendered an apology and took steps to open an account for Vidya’s son. This is not an isolated incident. People with disabilities face problems at every step of the way — from opening an account to getting an ATM card or a cheque
book. They have to face physical/ infrastructural barriers at the banks as well as digital barriers because of the inaccessible mobile banking apps and internet banking. Most importantly, attitudes of banking officials who often harass them is a major barrier. RBI guidelines make it very clear that banks should provide doorstep services to people with disabilities and senior citizens, but the reality is grim. Section 13 of the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act, 2016 makes it clear that the government must ensure that the disabled have equal rights as others to own or inherit property, movable or immovable, control their financial affairs and have access to bank loans, mortgages and other forms of financial credit. But the banking officials presume people with disability are incapable of taking any financial decision on their own, even as basic as holding an account. Accessibility in banking
facilities is crucial for financial inclusion of people with disabilities. The government’s laudable objective of striving for a digital economy and going cashless cannot be achieved when banks refuse to issue ATM cards and cheque books to people with disabilities. It is now imperative to make banking accessible because most of the states transfer the funds directly to the beneficiary’s account. Inclusivity is crucial This perennial problem could be solved only if banks start following RBI guidelines scrupulously. There should be widespread awareness campaigns and sensitisation training for banking officials about these guidelines and to bring about attitudinal changes. Every branch and ATM centre must be made accessible with ramps wherever possible for wheelchair users. Time and again, the chief commissioner for persons with disabilities, a post that
falls under the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, has recommended banks to provide facilities including ATM cards/ cheque books/locker facilities, etc. to visually impaired who are predominantly denied access over claims that these could be misused by others. Banks are also advised by the RBI to provide talking ATMs with braille keypads. For people with cerebral palsy, autism or mental illness, a legal guardianship certificate issued by the competent authority is given for opening/operating bank accounts. But bank officials, without any application of mind, mechanically started insisting on appointing a guardian for all mentally ill persons irrespective of mental capacity. The RBI again clarified that “it would be necessary for banks to seek appointment of a guardian only in such cases where they are convinced on their own or based on documentary evidence available, that the concerned person
is mentally ill and is not able to enter into a valid and legally binding contract”. Further, the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act, 2016 provides only for a limited guardianship and encourages a person with disability to be more autonomous. Apart from the already existing customer service committee, which usually does not have a person with disability, every bank should have a small team comprising the bank manager, one banking official and a person with disability who holds an account with the branch to monitor implementation of these guidelines, conduct access audits of the branch and to make banking service inclusive and accessible for all. This small group can also undertake feedback from its customers on accessibility issues and improve to provide better customer services. PM tells retiring RS MPs to share experiences
pen down their experiences and contributions. “... I would want you to put in words the memories gained here to help serve as a reference point for coming generations,” the prime minister said. “We want the members to come again. As the Chairman said, some retiring members have long experience... That means the repository of experience lies with these members.” Sometimes experience has more power than knowledge, he said, noting that academic knowledge has
its limits. “It comes in use in seminars but things gained through experience help find easy solutions to problems,” Modi said. Therefore, he asserted, experience has its own importance. When experienced colleagues retire, the House and the nation feel the loss and some shortcomings are felt in decision-making for coming generations, the prime minister said. “When experienced people retire, a lot would be said about them in the
House but the responsibility of those remaining increases. The tales of experience left behind by those retiring, remaining members have to take that forward,” he noted. According to Modi, MPs may feel they have contributed a lot to the House but the House has also contributed to their lives. “We take back more from the House than we give. We experience India’s diversity in its social structure in the house.” Everybody sitting on either side of the aisle has in some way or the other contributed to give direction to the country. “If we conserve it, this priceless treasure will help people in the future...,” he observed. This is the 75th year of Independence and India is celebrating the ‘Azadi ka Amrit Mohatsav’, he said, adding that great men have contributed a lot for the country and now it is our responsibility to do so.

NEW DELHI, MAR 31 (PTI): Bidding farewell to 72 MPs retiring from the Rajya Sabha, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday urged them to take the experience gained within the four walls of the House to four directions in the best interests of the country and to help inspire coming generations. Addressing the Upper House, the prime minister emphasised that experience has more power than knowledge, and the MPs should take it forward in the service of the nation. “We may be moving out of these four walls, but we should take this experience from here to all four directions in the best interests of the country. (‘Char deewaron mein paya hua, char dishaon mein le jayein, ye hum sabka sankalp rahe’),” Modi said. Giving his best wishes to those retiring, he told them to “come again” to the House. NEW DELHI, MAR 31 (PTI): The National Students’ Union of India and the All India Mahila Congress staged protests on Thursday against the government over the steep hike in fuel prices. While the Congress-affiliated NSUI held a protest outside the Union Petroleum Ministry, the AIMC held a demonstration in front of the Parliament gate. Around 20 protestors were detained during the protest outside the parliament and were taken to the police station in two buses, according to a senior police officer. Holding placards and banners, the student activists of NSUI staged a demonstration outside the petroleum ministry. The NSUI said the students’ fraternity protested “in a unique way” by singing songs against inflation and rising fuel prices. Some students were seen sitting outside the petroleum ministry and singing popular number ‘Mehangai Daayan’, while

The prices of petrol and diesel are increasing continuously for the last several days. “It is very unfortunate that due to the corona pandemic, the country’s economy is at a standstill but the government is constantly putting the burden of inflation on the pockets of people. it will never be tolerated,” said Nitish Gaur NSUI National Secretary. MANGALURU, MAR 31 (PTI): India is the most secular country in the world and a land of peace and harmony, senior RSS leader Kalladka Prabhakar Bhat said. Criticising students who refuse to wear uniform prescribed by educational institutions, he said they should leave the country if they cannot follow the rules here. He was addressing a gathering after inaugurating the post-graduate students’ council of Mangalore University at Mangalagangotri campus on Wednesday evening. India offered religious freedom to all and it has accepted people of all faiths, he said. He said India has a rich history and that the Mughal kings were not part of that history. He also made some critical remarks against Mughal king Akbar. Meanwhile, members of Campus Front of India (CFI) and Students Federation of India (SFI) staged protests against the university for inviting Bhat to the campus to inaugurate the council.
NEW DELHI, MAR 31 (PTI): India has emerged as a “strong voice” of developing nations on climate change issues that can neither be suppressed not ignored, Environment Minister Bhupender Yadav asserted on Thursday. Replying to a discussion on climate change in the Lok Sabha, Yadav said when it comes to environment, India has always been a solution provider to the world. He said India, under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership, was among the few countries that not only set Nationally Determined Contributions in 2015 but achieved them before time, setting an example for others. Underlining that the prime minister has often talked about climate justice, Yadav said developed nations who are chiefly responsible for carbon emission must take responsibility. The developed countries have acknowledged this
“Since you would have more time now, I would urge you to make use of this Amrit Mohatsav to inspire the coming generations. If you contribute in this endeavour, I feel the country will gain a lot and will be strengthened. I wish all of you the best,” the prime minister said. A total of 72 members, including seven nominated members, are retiring between March and July this year, which is one-third the strength of the House. The retiring members represent 19 states and some of them have experience of five terms. Those retiring from the Rajya Sabha include A K Antony, Ambika Soni, P Chidambaram, Anand Sharma, Jairam Ramesh, Suresh Prabhu, Praful Patel, Subramanian Swamy, Prasanna Acharya, Sanjay Raut, Naresh Gujral, Satish Chandra Mishra, M C Mary Kom, Swapan Dasgupta and Narendra Jadhav.

NEW DELHI, MAR 31 (PTI): India and France on Wednesday began a five-day mega naval wargame in the Arabian Sea in reflection of growing congruence in their maritime security cooperation. The Indian Navy said various platforms including ships, submarines, maritime patrol aircraft, fighter aircraft and helicopters of the two navies are participating in the Varuna exercise. “These units will endeavour to enhance and hone their operational skills in maritime theatre, augment inter-operability to undertake maritime security operations and demonstrate their commitment to promote peace, security and stability in the region as an integrated force,” it said in a statement. India’s lifestyle can teach the world how to live in harmony with environment, he asserted. Noting that climate change affects everyone transcending borders, Yadav said the new cyclones hitting India’s coastal areas in the last few years show that “we are also vulnerable”. Listing out the achievements of the Modi government in the field of climate change, he said due to the efforts it made in the last seven years, India has become a leader in environment policy and action. Under Modi, India has not only come up with an environment policy that gives direction to the world but it is the only country that has taken big steps in achieving the goals set at climate summits, Yadav said.

NEW DELHI, MAR 31 (PTI): Investors’ wealth jumped over Rs 59.75 lakh crore in the 2021-22 fiscal, helped by a largely buoyant trend in domestic stocks with benchmark index Sensex surging over 18 per cent during the period. Braving many headwinds in the latter part of the current fiscal, Sensex closed the 2021-22 financial year with a gain of 9,059.36 points or 18.29 per cent. Mirroring optimism in equities despite worries related to geopolitical tension, inflation concerns, FII selling, the market capitalisation of BSE-listed firms rallied by Rs 59,75,686.84 crore to Rs 2,64,06,501.38 crore in the entire 2021-22 fiscal. “The positive sentiment continued for most of the year led by strong economic and earnings recovery on the back of easing COVID waves. “However, equity markets lost their sheen in the last quarter, owing to geopolitical tensions and inflation concerns, especially in developed economies. Nonetheless, it has been a
good year for the markets and managed to end with healthy gains in FY22,” Ajit Mishra, VP-Research, Religare Broking, said. The market capitalisation of BSE-listed companies had jumped to an all-time high of over Rs 280 lakh crore on January 17 this year. Analysts said that easing of restrictions, strong vaccination drives and less severe COVID waves abated concerns regarding the pandemic. “Moreover, strong support from the government and central bank (keeping interest rates low & adequate liquidity) to revive the economic growth helped markets inch higher,” Mishra added. The BSE Sensex reached its all-time high of 62,245.43 on October 19 last year. Sunil Nyati, Managing Director of Swastika Investmart Ltd, said. “FY22 remains good for the Indian equity market despite lots of headwinds. The first half was very good while the market entered into consolidation in the second half combined with high volatility.

addition of capital flow management measures and macro prudential policies that can be applied preemptively. “But when used appropriately, these measures reduce the likelihood of a financial crisis in the event of a sudden reversal of capital inputs. This change builds on the integrated policy framework, a research effort by the IMF to build a systematic framework to analyze policy options and tradeoffs in response to shocks given country specific characteristics,” she said. The latest IMF report, she said, highlights the risks to financial stability that can arise from a gradual buildup of external debt liabilities, especially when these generate currency mismatches, and narrow and exceptional cases from foreign debt denominated in local currency. “Preemptive capital flow management measures and macro prudential policy to restrict inflows can mitigate risks from external debt,” Gopinath said.

Ukraine are stark reminders of how volatile capital flows can be and the impact this can have on economies,” Gopinath said. In the aftermath of the great financial crisis, where interest rates were low for a long time in advanced economies, capital flow to emerging markets in search of high returns, she said. In some countries, this led to a gradual buildup of their external debt in foreign currency, which was not offset by foreign currency assets or hedges, she noted. “Then when the taper tantrum struck and there was a sudden loss of appetite for emerging market debt, it led to severe financial distress in some markets. Now the lessons learned from such episodes and from a large body of research is that in some circumstances, countries should have the option of preemptively curbing debt inflows to safeguard macroeconomic and financial stability,” Gopinath said. Accordingly, the main update to the policy toolkit released by the IMF is the

Gita Gopinath aging the associated risks in a way that preserves macroeconomic and financial stability and does not generate significant negative outward spillovers. The Review introduces important changes that expand the toolkit for policymakers, such as allowing the pre-emptive use of capital flow measures on inflows if financial vulnerabilities exist. In response to a question, Gopinath noted that there are other kinds of financial risks associated with having large amounts of capital inflows. “In the case of India, there are a large number of capital restrictions already in place. The Indian government uses these restrictions quite proactively in
dealing when the external environment changes. So, by putting restrictions on the amount of external borrowing the corporates can do, that is an instrument that they use. And they use it in response to changing external circumstances. “So, there are quite a few safeguards that the Indian economy has in terms of capital flows. But of course, it is still in the process of liberalizing its capital accounts. And as its financial markets deepen, it’s financial institutions deepen, it could move towards more, allowing for more forms of capital flows,” Gopinath said. The top IMF official, an Indian American said, capital flows are desirable because they can bring substantial benefits to recipient countries. But they can also result in macro-economic challenges and financial stability risks, she said. “The dramatic capital outflows we witnessed at the start of the global pandemic, and the recent turbulence and capital flows to some emerging markets following the war in

WASHINGTON, MAR 31 (PTI): India, which has received a record number of foreign direct investment during the last few years despite COVID-19 crisis, has quite a few safeguards in place to mitigate the risks from capital flows, the International Monetary Fund said Wednesday. “Capital flows have several benefits. They finance needed investments. They help insure against some kinds of risks. There are many benefits to countries from having capital flows in India and also benefits from receiving those capital flows,” IMF’s First Deputy Managing Director, Gita Gopinath, told reporters here. The IMF on Wednesday released a paper on the Review of the Institutional View (IV) on the Liberalization and Management of Capital Flows. The IV was adopted in 2012 and provides the basis for consistent Fund advice on policies related to capital flows. The IV aims to help countries reap the benefits of capital flows while man-

nationwide daily power cuts from seven hours to 10 due to the non-availability of fuel to generate hydroelectricity. In a bid to reduce the power cuts, the government has directed the state fuel entity, Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB), to purchase diesel from LIOC, the Lankan subsidiary of IOC. The CEB officials said the LIOC has agreed to release 6,000 MT of diesel to generate thermal power so that the power cuts could be reduced by two hours. Sri Lanka has been facing a seven-hour power outage since the beginning
of the month. A sudden rise in prices of key commodities and fuel shortage forced tens of thousands of people to queue for hours outside petrol filling stations. All essentials are in short supply due to import restrictions forced by the forex crisis. India recently announced to extend a USD 1 billion line of credit to Sri Lanka as part of its financial assistance to the country to deal with the economic crisis following a previous USD 500 billion line of credit in February to help it purchase petroleum products. Economic relief package from India has provided temporary solace. “A shipment under the Indian credit line will be coming tomorrow (Friday) night. The Ceylon Electricity Board will get fuel from April 2. We can reduce power cuts to some extent after that,” Power Minister Pavithra Wanniarachchi told reporters.

WASHINGTON, MAR 31 (PTI): President Vladimir Putin’s war in Ukraine has been a “strategic blunder” that has weakened Russia and left it “increasingly isolated” on the world stage, according to the White House. At a press conference on Wednesday, White House Press Secretary Kate Bedingfield said the US has information that Putin felt misled by the Russian military, which has resulted in persistent tension between the president and his military leadership. “We believe that Putin is being misinformed by his advisors about how badly the Russian military is performing and how the Russian economy is being crippled by sanctions because his senior advisors are too afraid to tell him the truth,” she said. “So, it is increasingly clear that Putin’s war has been a strategic blunder that has left Russia weaker over the long term, and increas-

lawmakers, the session is being adjourned till Sunday — almost 10 minutes after it had started, Geo News reported. PM Imran Khan has seemingly lost the majority in the lower house after PTI’s allies — MQM-P, BAP, JWP, independent MNA from Balochistan Aslam Bhootani — decided to side with the Opposition. The prime minister, after the allies started leaving the government’s camp, has time and again repeated that he will not resign and “fight till the last ball”.
With Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan virtually losing the majority in the 342-member National Assembly after defection of two key allies, backdoor efforts are underway to reach a deal between the premier and the joint opposition to dissolve the lower house, according to a highly placed source. The highly placed source in the federal government told PTI on Thursday that backdoor talks between the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf government and the joint opposition are underway on the issue of no-confidence motion against Khan. “Talks are focused on one-point – the joint opposition withdraws the notrust motion against Khan and in return he dissolves the National Assembly calling for fresh elections,” the source said.

LONDON, MAR 31 (AP): Britain has imposed sanctions on more than a dozen Russian media figures and organisations accused of spreading propaganda and disinformation about the war in Ukraine. The latest group subjected to asset freezes and travel bans includes Rossiya television anchor Sergey Brilev, who previously lived in the UK, Gazprom-Media chief executive Aleksandr Zharov and Alexey Nikolov, managing director of Kremlin-backed broadcaster RT. Sanctions have also been slapped on media organisations TV-Novosti, which owns RT, and Rossiya Segodnya, which controls the Sputnik news agency. British Foreign Secretary Liz Truss said Thursday’s sanctions would hit “the shameless propagandists who push out Putin’s fake news and narratives.”

NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg says Russia does not appear to be scaling back its military operations in Ukraine but is instead redeploying forces to the eastern Donbas region. Russia promised during talks in Istanbul on Tuesday that it would de-escalate operations near Kyiv and Chernihiv to “increase mutual trust and create conditions for further negotiations.” Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and the West were skeptical. Stoltenberg told reporters Thursday that “Russia has repeatedly lied about its intentions,” and must be judged on its actions alone, not the word of its leaders. “According to our intelligence, Russian units are not withdrawing but repositioning. Russia is trying to regroup, resupply and reinforce its offensive in the Donbas region,” he said.

Moscow says it is scaling back its offensives near the capital and the north and now focusing on “liberating” Donbas. Mariupol, once a city of 400,000 people, has been destroyed by four weeks of relentless bombardment and siege. The United Nations believes thousands of
people have died there. Previous attempts to bring aid into besieged parts of the city have failed and civilians have only been able to escape if they have cars. Ukraine said 45 buses were on their way on Thursday and the ICRC said it would evacuate civilians from Friday if the warring parties agreed on safe passage. “It’s desperately important that this operation takes place. The lives of tens of thousands of people in Mariupol depend on it,” said ICRC spokesperson Ewan Watson in Geneva. In a part of Mariupol now held by Russia, people climbed out of cellars to appear, ghostlike, among the ruins. The letter states “Mr. Rock, we apologise to you for what you experienced on our stage and thank you for your resilience in that moment. We also apologise to our nominees, guests and viewers for what trans-
pired during what should have been a celebratory event.” Monday evening, a letter from Academy President David Rubin and Academy CEO Dawn Hudson went out to the entire membership. The leadership shared their “outrage” regarding Smith’s actions and how it “overshadowed” the evening where films such as ‘CODA’ and ‘Dune’ walked away with the most awards. Likely to go down as one of the craziest moments in the 94year history of the Academy, it’s not the only “crazy” moment during a telecast. At the 1973 ceremony, Sacheen Littlefeather accepted the best actor Oscar on behalf of Marlon Brando for ‘The Godfather’ (1972) to speak about the mistreatment of Native Americans in the Hollywood industry. This was on the heels of the standoff between law enforcement officials and Native Americans at Wounded Knee. After receiving a mixture of applause and audible boos from the audience, Littlefeather claimed in a 2021 interview with The Guardian that John Wayne had to be restrained by six security men to prevent him from forcibly removing her from the stage. Two-time director winner Clint Eastwood took the stage afterward to present best picture and grotesquely said, “I don’t know if I should present this award on behalf of all the cowboys shot in all the John Ford Westerns over the years.” (IANS)

they have been previously found in human feces. A study from Dec. 2021 determined that people with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) had more microplastics in their stool than those without the disease. Researchers noted in the paper that these recent findings spur additional questions about how dangerous microplastic exposure may be. They wrote, “If plastic particles present in the bloodstream are indeed being carried by immune cells, the question also arises, can such exposures potentially affect immune regulation or the predisposition to diseases with an immunological base?” (By Lindsay Kalter)

ust few days after Hollywood star Will Smith slapped comedian Chris Rock during the 94th Oscars telecast, the Board of Governors held an emergency meeting to discuss the consequences for the best actor winner. He now faces “suspension, expulsion, or other sanctions permitted,” reports ‘Variety’. The statement from the Academy is highly damning, citing the standards of conduct and Smith’s violations of “inappropriate physical contact, abusive or threatening behaviour, and compromising the integrity of the Academy”. Smith, who won the Oscar for best actor for ‘King Richard’ not long after the slap, has been given 15 days notice of a vote regarding his violations and sanctions, and has the opportunity to provide a written response. The next board meeting is scheduled for April 18, when the Academy may take disciplinary action. One notable new bit of information is the Academy stating they asked Will Smith to leave the Dolby Theatre but Smith refused to do so. One of the biggest bits of scrutiny regarding the handling of the moment was Smith not being removed from the auditorium. The Academy has offered clarification saying Smith was asked to leave but refused. “We also recognise we could have handled the situation differently,” the Academy statement read. The organisation

Women’s WC: England reach final
C H R I S TC H U RC H , MAR 31 (IANS): On the back of a magnificent 129 from opener Danni Wyatt and a career-best 6/36 by left-arm spinner Sophie Ecclestone, defending champions England on Thursday reached the final of ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup with a superb 137-win over South Africa at Hagley Oval. It continues the remarkable upward swing of England, who began their title defence with three losses but fought back to win next five matches in a row, including Thursday’s semi-final, to storm into their second straight World Cup final. They will now meet Australia in the final at the venue of their semifinal win on Sunday. Chasing a mammoth 294 in a high-pressure knockout match, South Africa were never in the chase from the word go. Pacer Anya Shrubsole removed both openers, Laura Wolvaardt and Lizelle Lee, cheaply in her first two overs. Wolvaardt, the leading run-scorer in the tournament, departed without troubling the scorers, chipping a Shrubsole inswinger straight back to her. Lee, in a lean run throughout the tournament, chipped another inswinger from Shrubsole straight to midwicket. Lara Goodall and

captain Sune Luus tried to resurrect the South Africa innings. But England struck back as Kate Cross cleaned up Luus while Goodall tried to scoop against Charlie Dean, but the ball shattered her stumps. From 67 for 4, Ecclestone ran through the rest of the batting lineup with all six wickets as South Africa crumbled to 156 all out in 38 overs. Earlier, England posted an imposing 293/8, thanks to Wyatt’s knock laced with 12 boundaries. She had plenty of luck on her side as she was dropped five times in the innings (22, 36, 77, 116 and 117), including twice in an Ayabonga Khaka over. The reprieves meant Wyatt took the attack to South Africa’s bowlers and put their usually tight

fielders under pressure in a rematch of a thrilling 2017 World Cup semi-final. Wyatt also stitched handy partnerships with Sophia Dunkley (60) and Amy Jones (28) during the middle overs as England gained the upper hand in a match which will decide who will meet Australia in the final on Sunday. For South Africa, their experienced pacers Shabnim Ismail (3/46) and Marizanne Kapp (2/52) did well. But England and Wyatt in particular scored big against South Africa’s other bowling options. Kapp provided South Africa the best start when she dismissed opener Tammy Beaumont (7) with the score on 10, before skipper Heather Knight joined Wyatt and the duo set about resurrecting England’s innings.
While Knight was overly cautious at the crease, Wyatt attempted to attack and Kapp provided her with a lifeline when she dropped an easy chance in the field. Khaka (1/66) trapped Knight lbw for one after taking a late review to add to England’s woes and it was 77/3 shortly after when Nat Sciver fell to Ismail for just 15. Wyatt and Jones then put on 49 for the fourth wicket, until Kapp was introduced back into the attack and picked up her second when Chloe Tryon hung on to send Jones back to the pavilion. Dunkley, with her second successive fifty in as many matches in the World Cup, proved to be the perfect partner for Wyatt as the duo combined for a 116-run stand that set England on course for a big score to set up a stiff chase for South Africa, which eventually was enough in the end to reach their sixth Women’s Cricket World Cup final. Brief Scores: England 293/8 in 50 overs (Danni Wyatt 129, Sophia Dunkley 60; Shabnim Ismail 3/46, Marizanne Kapp 2/52) beat South Africa 156 all out in 38 overs (Mignon du Preez 30, Lara Goodall 28; Sophie Ecclestone 6/36, Anya Shrubsole 2/27) by 137 runs

LAS VEGAS, MAR 31 (IANS): The world-famous neon lights of Las Vegas will provide the backdrop to Formula 1’s newest race when the American city hosts a night event from 2023, organisers confirmed in a statement. The news was announced at a glittering event in Las Vegas on Wednesday (IST) evening, with F1 President and CEO Stefano Domenicali and Liberty Media President and CEO Greg Maffei in attendance. “This is an incredible moment for Formula 1 that demonstrates the huge appeal and growth of our sport with a third race in the US. Barcelona break women’s crowd record in Champions League win over Real Madrid
FC Barcelona players celebrate after the match against Real Madrid.
BARCELONA, MAR 31 (AGENCIES): Barcelona broke the women’s attendance record as 91,553 fans watched them come from behind to beat bitter rivals Real Madrid 5-2 at Camp Nou on Wednesday and reach the Champions League semi-finals with an 8-3 aggregate win. The new record surpassed both the previous club mark of 60,739 fans set in 2019 at Atletico Madrid’s Metropolitano stadium, where the hosts beat Barca 2-0 in a league match, and the official attendance record for a women’s game. That was set at the 1999 World Cup final be-
tween the United States and China, when 90,195 fans were in attendance at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena. All 99,354 tickets for Wednesday’s match had been sold out since January after a huge engagement campaign by the club. Yet expectations that the record would be broken were shaken after heavy rain fell all day in Barcelona and the match started with the stadium only half full. But as the game progressed, fans slowly arrived and ended up almost filling the iconic Camp Nou, Europe’s largest stadium, creating a fantastic atmosphere. There was an enor-
mous mosaic in the stands with the slogan ‘More than empowerment’. Barcelona, who won the quarter-final first leg 3-1 in Madrid, took the lead eight minutes into the first half with a brilliant curling shot from long range by Mapi Leon but Real fought back to lead 2-1 with goals from Olga Carmona and Claudia Zornoza. Yet Barca recovered early in the second half with Aitana Bonmati, Claudia Pina and Alexia Putellas putting the hosts back in front with three goals in 10 minutes. Caroline Hansen rounded off the scoring in what was an electrifying match.
Er. Zale Neikha and dignitaries during the inauguration of Khelo India Centre at Loyola Hr. Sec. School Jakhama. (DIPR)
DIMAPUR, MAR 31 (NPN): Advisor for Youth Resources and Sports, Zale Neikha on Thursday inaugurated the Khelo India Centre (KIC) for Hockey at Loyola Higher Secondary School, Jakhama. This is the only school in the entire Nagaland which has a proper Hockey ground and the students have been representing the State at various levels of competitions. The Physical Teacher of Loyala School, Walter D’souza first introduced Hockey to its students and after undergoing NIS training became a full time Coach. Thereby, Hockey as a sports discipline was set up in Nagaland in the early 1980s. Addressing the faculty and students at the inaugural function, Advisor Neikha said in order to promote sports and tap budding sportspersons, the present United Democratic Alliance Government in the State is initiating policy reforms and emphasising on development of sports infrastructure. Sports as a discipline has a lot to offer in this present era and it has rightly been remarked as
‘A multi-million industry’, he said. There is scope for excellent sportspersons to take up sports as one’s profession and earn one’s livelihood, he said while encouraging sportspersons to choose their sports discipline wisely, be focused and never give up on failures or become complacent on small achievements, rather aim for the stars and become role models for others to follow suit. Neikha expressed gratitude to Loyola School for being the pioneer of Hockey and tactfully bringing the game this far in the state. As requested by the Principal of the Loyola HSS Rev Fr William Pinto to help in laying astro-turf at the only hockey ground in the State, the advisor said that he would take it up on priority at the government level. It is worthwhile to mention that, to this present day, Loyola School is the only place where Hockey is played in our state. In the past, under the sponsorship of the Youth Resources & Sports Department, Loyola Boys represented the state and participated at the “Nehru Hockey Cup and many
students have also availed scholarships and participated at National Games and International level, he said. Elaborating on KICs, he said the Union Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports introduced the scheme of KIC at the district level on June 29, 2020, with a vision to infuse sports culture and achieve sporting excellence in the country and thereby nurture and tap young talented sports persons at the grassroots and also provide effective sports training opportunities, he said. The Ministry has identified 14 sports disciplines for excellence in Olympics such as Archery, Athletics, Boxing, Badminton, Cycling, Fencing, Hockey, Judo, Rowing, Shooting, Swimming, Table Tennis, Weightlifting, Wrestling, Football and Traditional sports, he said. Under the KIC Scheme, each centre will be extended with grant-in-aid for remuneration of past champion athlete (Coach), Support staff, purchase of sport kits and equipment and participation in competitions and events, he said. Neikha also unveiled the KIC Hockey plaque and witnessed an exhibition match. Kohima Deputy Commissioner Gregory Thejawelie Sote, an alumni of the school, said Loyola HSS has been the cradle of Hockey in the State and encouraged them to continue the efforts in promoting the game and also participating in higher level of competitions. He also appealed to them to make the best use of the facility created.

De Kock, Lewis shine as Super Giants beat CSK an otherwise insipid performance by the Super Giants’ bowling unit. Andrew Tye (2/41) managed to pick two wickets in his final over. Put in to bat, Uthappa looked like a man on a mission as he slammed Avesh Khan (2/38) for back-to-back boundaries off the first two balls of the innings. With the ball coming nicely onto the bat, he smashed it all over the park. CSK were dealt a blow when a direct hit by Bishnoi from backward point marked the end of Gaikwad (1), who was well short of the crease in the third over. But Uthappa, and new man Moeen Ali (35), continued the assault by dealing only in fours and sixes. The Super Giants bowlers had no answer for the duo as CSK raced to 73 for one at the end of the Powerplay. In all, Uthappa slammed eight fours and one maximum, while Moeen hit four boundaries and two sixes during his 22-ball stay. It was Bishnoi again who gave the
second breakthrough when he trapped Uthappa leg before with a quick delivery, soon after the batter reached his fifty. Dube picked up from where Uthappa left, cracking three boundaries off Dushmantha Chameera (0/49), who struggled with his line, in the ninth over. It was a bad day for the Sri Lankan as he repeatedly fumbled with the ball in the field, giving away easy boundaries. With the bowlers struggling after getting nothing from the wicket, sloppy fielding made matters worse for LSG. Dube and Ambati Rayudu (27), then, shared a 60-run stand to keep CSK on course for a big total. Brief scores: Chennai Super Kings 210/7 in 20 overs (Robin Uthappa 50, Moeen Ali 35, Shivam Dube 49; Bishnoi 2/24, Andrew Tye 2/41, Avesh Khan 2/38) lost to Lucknow Super Giants 211/4 in 19.3 overs (KL Rahul 40, Quinton de Kock 61, Evin Lewis 55 not out; Dwaine Pretorius 2/31) by six wickets.

Swiatek marches into Miami semis, Ruud upsets Zverev
MIAMI, MAR 31 (AGENCIES): Poland’s Iga Swiatek continued her terrific run with a 6-3 6-3 win over Petra Kvitova on Wednesday to reach the Miami Open semi-finals, while Norway’s Casper Ruud upset men’s second seed Alexander Zverev in their quarter-final clash. Swiatek, who came to Miami full of confidence after claiming back-to-back titles at Doha and Indian Wells, pressured twice Wimbledon champion Kvitova’s serve throughout the 77-minute match and never faced a break point. The Polish second seed, who will take over the world number one ranking next week, has now won 15 consecutive matches dating back to Qatar and will
next face 16th seed Jessica Pegula. “I want to use the confidence that I built since the beginning of Doha,” said Swiatek. “I’m on a roll and I want to use that. Having that kind of streak got pretty tricky, but I’m pretty glad that I could play well, that I’m healthy, and that I can compete against players like Petra. She’s a legend.” Pegula advanced after Spanish fifth seed Paula Badosa retired with a viral illness while trailing 4-1. “Been struggling with illness since the last match the other day,” Badosa wrote on Twitter. “Tried everything to recover but wasn’t enough. I’ll take some days to recover well and prepare for clay court

season.” For Pegula, it marked the second consecutive abrupt ending to a match as unseeded Ukrainian Anhelina Kalinin retired while down 6-0 in their fourth-round clash. Norwegian sixth seed Ruud secured the biggest win of his career with a 6-3 1-6 6-3 triumph over world number four Zverev.
Casper Ruud
After Zverev levelled the match, it was Ruud who was the aggressor in the decider as he frequently approached the net with great success, held tough during baseline rallies and limited his unforced errors. Ruud had failed to win a set in two previous meetings against Zverev. “I feel a little bit good. I mean, it’s obviously an
exciting night and the biggest win of my career so far,” Ruud told reporters. “ T h i s i s n ow t h e fourth time I’m reaching a semi-final in a Masters 1000 event and ... the first time on hard court so that means it’s a little bit extra special for me.” Ruud lost the three Masters semi-finals he previously played in Rome,
Monte Carlo and Madrid -all claycourt tournaments. “Let’s see if I can take what I have learned from the three previous semifinals where unfortunately I lost all of them and see if I can turn it around and make the fourth time the lucky charm,” he added. Up next for Ruud will be Argentine Francisco Cerundolo, whose dream run in his ATP Masters 1000 debut continued after Italian ninth seed Jannik Sinner was forced to retire from their match with foot blisters. Cerundolo, who is ranked 103rd, was leading 4-1 when Sinner decided to call the match and becomes the lowest-ranked men’s singles semi-finalist in the tournament’s history.
