ED summons Sonia, Rahul in NH case

NEW DELHI, JUN 1 (PTI): The Enforcement Directorate on Wednesday summoned Congress president Sonia Gandhi and her MP son Rahul Gandhi for questioning in a money laundering case linked to the National Herald newspaper, officials said. While Sonia Gandhi, 75, has been asked to depose before the federal agency at its headquarters in central Delhi on June 8, Rahul Gandhi has been asked to appear on Thursday (June 2). Congress leader Abhishek Manu Singhvi told at a press conference that Sonia Gandhi will comply with the summons. Rahul Gandhi, 51, has written to the probe agency to postpone the date to after June 5 as he is not in the country, Singhvi and another Congress leader Randeep Surjewala told reporters. “The Modi govern-

ment should know that by registering such fake and fabricated cases, they cannot succeed in their cowardly conspiracy,” Singhvi said. The case to probe alleged financial irregularities in the party-promoted Young Indian that owns the National Herald newspaper was registered recently. The agency, officials said, wants to record the statements of Sonia and Ra-

hul Gandhi under criminal sections of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA). The National Herald is published by Associated Journals Limited (AJL) and owned by Young Indian Pvt Limited. The agency recently questioned senior Congress leaders Mallikarjun Kharge and Pawan Bansal as part of the investigation. The questioning of the senior Congress leaders and

the Gandhis is part of ED’s investigation to understand the shareholding pattern, financial transactions and role of the promoters of Young Indian and AJL, officials said. The agency registered a fresh case under the criminal provisions of the PMLA after a trial court here took cognisance of an Income Tax Department probe against Young Indian Pvt Ltd on the basis of a private criminal complaint filed by BJP MP Subramanian Swamy in 2013. The members of the first family of the Congress party, including Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi, are among the promoters and shareholders of Young Indian. After the ED examined Kharge last month, the Congress’ whip in Lok Sabha Manickam Tagore accused the government of “harassing” him.

NPCC demands dismissal of UDA government Alleges role of facilitator assigned by NSCN (I-M) Correspondent

KOHIMA, JUN 1 (NPN): Nagaland Pradesh Congress Committee (NPCC) has urged upon the governor to immediately dismiss the UDA government in Nagaland since it has been playing the role as ‘facilitator’ to the Naga peace process as assigned to it by the NSCN (I-M) in violation of the constitution of India. Addressing the mediaat Congress Bhavan here on Wednesday, NPCC president K Therie explained his stand that the legislators have been acting the role as ‘facilitator’ for the past 17 years as assigned by NSCN (I-M). He asserted that the UDA government was no longer a people’s government, but acting under the

directive of NSCN (I-M) and playing the role of facilitator. To c h i e f m i n i s t e r Neiphiu Rio’s statement wherein he purportedly said that “as a facilitator I have nothing to say”; Therie opined that if Rio represented NSCN(I-M) and not the Naga people then he should be dismissed. Referring to NSCN (I-M)’s accusing legislators of “overstepping their role as facilitator” and going beyond their assigned role in making bewildering statements on Naga solution, Therie remarked that though the chief minister was expected to deny this accusa-

tion, he had not done so far. He said the NSCN (IM)’s accusation was an admission that the group was running the State government and instead, continued to fund the group through cuts from development funds and al-lowing extortion deliberately on all items, systematically impacting price hike. He said legislators were together (under UDA) for survival and this was the reason legislators had no concrete agenda for solution since the last 25 years but that their sole intent was to survive together without settlement. Therie also pointed out that ‘summons’ by the group was most feared by people and so they take all their disputes to NSCN (I-M) courts as the administration had long collapsed. He said all these were in total violation of the oath of allegiance to the Constitution of India as established by law, to uphold the sovereignty and integrity

of India. Therie reiterated that whatever was “give-able by the Centre and what was acceptable to the people were known” and therefore, in order to deliberately cause delay, statements were made for one solution. He alleged that Rio was still unable to grasp the situation despite the lapse of 25 years of negotiation, which proved that he was not fit to lead, adding “I don’t consider Rio to be an intelligent per-son”. Therie in sarcasm, said the State government should have said that the two agreements – Frame-work Agreement and Agreed Position – be implemented immediately and assure they will pave the way as soon as both were implemented. On the demand of NSCN (I-M) for separate flag and constitution, Therie claimed that the group had an “inner understanding” with the Centre and therefore there was no reason (Cont’d on p-8)

My role is limited, Sarma on Naga issue Six cases of illegal collection being probed: CS

GUWAHATI/DIMAPUR, JUN 1 (AGENCIES/NPN): After the much-hyped about role of Assam chief minister and North East Democratic Alliance (NEDA) convenor Himanta Biswa Sarma in the Naga political talks, Sarma he himself categorically stated that his role was “limited” and cannot mediate in such a big and complex issue. Talking to media persons in Guwahati, ahead of his meeting with the Core Committee on Naga Political Issue (CCoNPI) scheduled to be held at Dimapur on June 2, Sarma said: “I don’t think I can mediate in such a big issue (Naga political issue)”.

DIMAPUR, JUN 1 (NPN): NSCN (I-M) member collective leadership and caretaker kilo kilonser, Rh. Raising said that the Nagas were in the process of entering into a final agreement with the Government of India, “which will be a decisive battle for the Nagas”. Raising, however, said that “if we win, our national future is saved, but if we lose, everything of us will fall.” Mentioning that the group was “looking for an amicable and honorable solution without betraying our principle,” Raising said they were also fully aware of the fact that any kind of agreement that betrays the principle “is no solution”. Though, as per reports, Sarma has been tasked by Union Home minister Amit shah to build a ‘political’ way forward with the leaderships of Naga groups, however, Sarma said: “At the political level and with the political leadership of BJP, NDPP and NPF, we keep on talking because all are within the NEDA. So, my role is limited only to interacting with our NEDA partners and not beyond.”

Sarma is expected to arrive Dimapur by chopper on Thursday evening, and hold a closed-door meeting with the Core Committee members. He will halt for the night at Niathu Resort, and depart for Karbi Anglong the next day. Sarma said that the Naga political issue is a complex issue and must be left to the Government of India and NSCN (I-M) and all others must refrain from commenting on this issue. According to The Economic Times report, Sarma said, “The Naga political issue has been there since the days of independence.

KOHIMA, JUN 1 (NPN): Close to two weeks after the state government ordered removal of all police check gates, barring the interstate check gates, the state chief secretary J Alam Wednesday said the government has so far received eight complaints on illegal taxation and investigation has been initiated. Out of the eight complaints, he said two complaints were found to be “in-actionable” while six cases were under investigation. TJ Longkumer, at the Civil Secretariat here on Wednesday, the chief secretary J. Alam said out of the 34 check gates, 21 were closed and 13 inter-state check gates were operating. The press conference was held to give an overview of post-closing of check gates in the state. Alam informed that a

24x7 control room has been set up at PHQ while two mobile numbers were provided to the citizens and the complaints were received through those numbers and emails. absolutely clear on its parameters of negotiations with the understanding that was reached on October 31, 2019, NTC said it was incumbent on NSCN (I-M) to take a call without wasting anymore time. Noting that Core Committee on Naga Political Issue (CCoNPI) formed under UDA tended to misuse its role while projecting itself as the indispensable broker between the Centre and Naga negotiators, NTC said the CCoNPI was at best a facilitator as any other facilitator and therefore its members giving statements on any agenda of the negotiators

was uncalled for. NTC said this was not the season for any facilitator, including CCoNPI, to make claims for political mileage on the prevailing situation by misguiding the gullible public and said that such ambition had to be restrained. “Indeed, everyone’s effort, be it the negotiator or the facilitator, must be focussed on solution alone and not otherwise,” NTC said. Citing local news reports of May 29, 2022 that CCoNPI was also likely to apprise Assam chief minister and NEDA convenor Himanta Biswa Sarma on the outcome of Saturday’s meet-

ing so as to take this forward to the Centre; NTC said this implied that whatever was the outcome of the meeting between NSCN (I-M) and the committee at Chümoukedima had to be submitted to Sarma, who would then convey this to the Centre. NTC however pointed out that there were official Naga negotiators, viz., NSCN (I-M) and WC/ NNPGs, and a legitimate State government that has equal status as Assam. NTC rejected the modus operandi of CCoNPI of involving another personality, as though the Naga negotiators did not have

access to the Central government through their official emissaries and as though Nagaland was secondary to other States. It warned CCoNPI not to over indulge or expose the competencies on the negotiating table sacred to the Nagas. Hits out at UNC: NTC has also taken serious note of United Naga Council (UNC) over the latter’s resolutions on May 27, 2022 which asked, what was the hurry for a solution? NTC in-stead asked UNC as what dividend it expected from a longer period of negotiation which has already completed 25 years? (Cont’d on p-11)

amendment of service rules

DIMAPUR, JUN 1 (NPN): Nagaland Assembly Secretariat Staff Association (NASSA) clarified that their resentment and opposition to the service extension of Dr. P.J. Antony, a retired officer from Lok Sabha secretariat, was against the arbitrary exercise of amending the existing service rules by Antony himself and not against the effects of promotional avenues of the officers and staff of NLA Secretariat. In a statement, NASSA president Pagai Ndang and general secretary Talirenla alleged that Antony had

unilaterally amended the existing Service Rules to suit his interest of service extension by inserting a provision where a superannuated officer can be appointed on deputation in the Assembly Secretariat till the age of 65 years. NASSA said the whole exercise of amending the service rules was arbitrarily done without observing any procedural norms and guidelines issued for this purpose and without consulting any senior administrative officers or the S e r v i c e (Cont’d on p-8)

between the two can produce deeper earthquakes in the IBR and crustal ones in the Eastern Himalayas. The NE fringe of the Indian Plate in the Eastern Himalaya has been found to be seismically active up to a depth of about 40 km, while the seismicity in the Indo-Burma Ranges (IBR) is observed up to a depth of around 200 km. In a study published in

the Tectonophysics Journal, researchers suggested that this seismic structure forms complex tectonics which produced the great Assam earthquake of 1950. The great Assam earthquake was a magnitude 8.6 event that is the largest intracontinental earthquake ever recorded with its epicenter located at the India-China border near the Mishmi Hills

of Arunachal Himalaya. “After the great Assam earthquake, the region between upper Assam and Mishmi Block has not produced any large earthquakes and is considered as a seismic gap region. A previous study has suggested a locked zone in the Mishmi Thrust (MT) zone, which may suggest building up of stress for a future earthquake,” the Ministry of Science & Technology said in a statement. The study suggests that the IBR is more susceptible to deeper earthquakes and significant strain partitioning is anticipated from the variation of pressure indicating the effect of complex tectonics.

DIMAPUR, JUN 1 (NPN): Nagaland Public Works Department (Road & Bridges) has reacted to the allegations made by Pochury organisations particularly the incident that purportedly occurred on April 29, 2022 in the office chamber of the chief engineer (R&B). Pochury Hoho and Pochury Hoho Kohima (PHK) had claimed that the public leaders had gone to lodge official complaint against the contractor for not executing the works, but the contractor attempted to manhandle the leaders and threatened with dire consequences in the presence of the chief engineer. In a press release, en-

gineer-in-chief NPWD, Er. Kahuli Sema, sought to present the sequential event that took place on April 29, 2022 in the office chamber of the chief engineer PWD (R&B). Er. Kahuli stated that on that day, the Kamaleah area village councils submitted ultimatum pertaining to construction of road from Lephori to Molhe Camp (130 Pillars) in the office chamber of the chief engineer PWD (R&B) during office hour. She said the ultimatum was submitted to chief engineer PWD (R&B) office by one individual on behalf of Kamaleah area village councils.

On that particular evening, engineer-in-chief said that she called the contractor Lhuosakuolie Metha (L Metha) to attend the office to discuss a matter pertaining to PMGSY works at around 7 p.m. since officers of the PMGSY cells were about to go out of station the next day. Coincidentally, Er. Kahuli said that Kamaleah area village council members came to the office of the chief engineer PWD (R&B) in the evening at around 7pm to deliberate on the ultimatum, saying they could not meet her the previous day since she was not present in the office. Dr. Nicky also said that people were slowly growing conscious on the need to maintain cleanliness. “It’s a good thing to become conscious but let us move beyond that and also get involved,” Dr Nicky said. He reminded the gathering that while performing a job, they should not boast of their achievement but look for contentment in the work they do. He commended the colony residents for displaying unity by organising the jubilee event which was not possible when there were differences. The advisor also stressed on the need for the people to start

Mnp Cong demands halt of Meghalaya govt’s project gets Over 1 lakh cases pending fencing in Myanmar border international recognition in Foreigners’ Tribunals Correspondent

A Foreigners’ Tribunal office in Barpeta, Assam. this trend continues, then it will take not less than eight years to solve the currently pending cases. Meanwhile, the number of cases will definitely increase as many people in Assam are receiving foreigners’ notice continuously. Senior advocate of Gauhati High court, Hafiz Rashid Ahmed Choudhury told IANS that an ample number of cases disposed of by FT members are appealed to the High court. He alleges that “there are many examples where judgments are deliberately made by the FT members to leave some legal loopholes”. “As a result, they returned to the foreigners’ tribunal from the court. Thus, the number of cases in FTs is constantly increasing. As the government hired the FT members on contract, they intentionally want to keep the number of pending cases high.” But, there are complaints of inadequate infrastructure in some FTs. Nath produced copies of the communications

received from the Deputy Commissioners of the various districts in Assam highlighting the measures taken by them so as to ensure that proper infrastructures for the Foreigner Tribunals in the different districts are in place. A perusal of the report submitted by the respective Deputy Commissioners indicates that while in some districts, significant steps have already been initiated to provide befitting infrastructures for operating the FTs, in certain districts, proper infrastructure is still not in place primarily due to the paucity of funds. He informed the court that the state government is looking into all aspects of the matter.

Chief Minister Sangma received the honour at an event held in Geneva. Chief Minister Sangma received the honour at an event held in Geneva. He said the MeghEA has benefitted departments in sanctioning and administrative approvals of schemes in a matter of days which earlier took months. “I congratulate Team Meghalaya for ensuring the implementation of this project,” the chief minister said in another tweet.

GUWAHATI, JUNE 1 (IANS): In the 100 Foreigners’ Tribunals (FTs) functioning in Assam, more than 1 lakh cases are pending which raises questions about the efficiency of the members working there. From April 1, 2021, to March 31, 2022, a mere number of 15,201 cases were disposed of in FTs, reads a status report submitted to the Gauhati High court by the state government. Besides, in those FTs, additional 173 members were attached in the last seven months for early disposal of the foreigners’ cases. But, the government status report raises eyebrows of many. The state government had recruited members in FTs with good salaries and additional facilities. But, the outcome is not encouraging. In an FT-related case in the High Court, government advocate D. Nath said a total of 1,19,164 foreigners’ cases are pending till March 31 this year. An average of only five cases are disposed of in each tribunal every month. If

IMPHAL, JUN 1: Manipur Congress on Wednesday demanded immediate halt to the border fencing work at the Manipur sector while slamming the BJP government for not being able to protect the state’s territorial boundary. It is unfortunate to learn about re-commencement of the border fencing work along Manipur sector of the Indo-Myanmar border despite objections from various civil society organizations, MPCC president K Meghachandra said. Reiterating Congress’s firm stand for the territorial boundary, the MPCC president demanded suspension of fencing work until the border dispute is settled. He was responding to queries from reporters on the recent report of re-commencement of border fencing work published in local media based on spot visit by media along with members of the United Committee Manipur (UCM). The UCM had demanded immediate halt of the fencing work while alleging that the fencing was being erected around one kilometer towards Manipur’s land from the actual international border pillars. Mention may be made here that the work for border

fencing remained suspended after strong protest from CSOs. They alleged that the fencing had left a large chunk of state’s land on Myanmar side. On the other hand, the MPCC president informed that the state Congress will join AICC’s nationwide two-day “Nav Sankalp Meeting”. He said that the programme was to be organized with a vision to bring Congress back to power in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. The brainstorming session which will be a part of the meeting will take up various agendas related to the re-strengthening of the party besides discussing the poll strategies. Such a session was in Rajasthan for the first time and after its success, AICC had decided to hold similar sessions across all the states of the country, he informed. He said that the brainstorming session will focus on charting out strategies to bring Congress back to power in the next Lok Sabha elections due by 2014. Former state chief minister Okram Ibobi Singh, senior state Congress leader and former MP Thokchom Meinya, CWC member, Gaikhangam will be the key resource persons of the brainstorming session, he said.

Ahead of by-polls, Tripura CM tells BJP’s youth brigade to refrain from violence

AG A RTA L A , J U N 1 (AGENCIES): Tripura Chief Minister Dr Manik Saha on Tuesday cautioned workers of Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha state unit and directed them to restrain from any kind of political violence in the forthcoming by-elections of four assembly constituencies, reports East Mojo. Saha’s strict warning came as the ruling party has been, time and again, accused of indulging in violence, jamming booths and intimidating the voters of opposition parties. “CM Dr Saha in his maiden meeting with Yuva Morcha state unit after assuming the charge of office has given a strict warning to the youth brigade and asked all of us to refrain from any kind of violent activities. He has rather stressed on the significant role the Yuva Mocrha can play in the elections to mobilize support for the

BJP,” a BJYM leader told EastMojo. Dr Saha chaired a crucial closed-door meeting of the BJYM at the state headquarters on Tuesday. “The objective of the meeting was to specify the role of the Yuva Mocrha in the by-elections. Separate responsibilities have been distributed among leaders to turn the party’s poll campaign a successful one,” said the BJYM leader. W h i l e exc h a n g i n g views with the youth leaders, the chief minister admitted the fact that due to internal misunderstanding, some youth activists have left the party and they should be brought back to the party fold. “Dr Saha recalled how some valued party workers of BJYM deser ted the party owing to unforeseen developments. He said that he would try his best to bring them back into the party fold,” he added. On being asked what

are the responsibilities of the BJYM for the by-polls, he said, “The Chief Minister has asked BJYM workers to lead from the front and reach out to more and more people to convey the message of Bharatiya Janata Party. The aspiring youth should know what efforts the central and state governments are undertaking to empower him, the women should know about their rights, likewise all the beneficiary groups should be made aware of the benefits they are entitled to or may have been enjoying unknowingly.” He has also advised us to once again revive the ‘one booth, ten youth’ concept to strengthen the BJP, he said. Pradesh BJP general secretaries Tinku Roy and Kishore Barman, BJYM president Nabadal Banik and others were present. According to Nabadal Banik, the purpose of the meeting was to strategize for the forthcoming elections.

esults of the 2022 High School Leaving Certificate (HSLC)examination and the Higher Secondary School Leaving Certificate (HSSLC) examination proved once again that girls continue to outshine boys in both examinations. In the HSLC examination out of a total of 28,938 candidates, 18,721 qualified with an overall pass percentage of 69.42%. The highest percentage was in 2017 at 70.19%. In the HSSLC examination 2022 a total of 14,443 appearing in arts, commerce and science streams passed. In arts stream the overall pass percentage (for both government and private HSS excluding repeaters was 85.04%. In commerce stream the overall pass percentage(for both government and private HSS excluding repeaters) was 87.25%. In science stream the overall pass percentage(for both government and private HSS excluding repeaters) was 89.82%. Notably, in HSLC examination 2022, a total of 10,021 girls qualified as against 8,700 boys. In addition, out of a total of 62 at the Top 20 positions, 44 were girls and 18 were boys. In the HSSLC examination 2022 girls scored an overall of 85.66% in arts stream as against 70.80% for boys. In commerce stream, 88.03% of girls passed as against 78.71 for boys. In science stream, while girls achieved 93.07% success, boys achieved 82.92% success. Among the Top 10 positions in arts, 15 were girls and 3 boys; while in commerce boys did better when eight were in the Top 10 as against five for girls. In science stream, there were nine girls and seven boys. Perhaps it may also be worth understanding some of the factors responsible for females doing better than males in competitive examinations. In a new study by OECD (Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development), the performances of 15-year-old boys and girls were examined in various subjects, including math and science. It was found that boys had an edge over girls in math and science, but the overall result was in the favour of girls. The study also revealed that boys struggled more than girls in academics and they were 50 percent more likely to fall short of basic standards in these areas. Girls outshine boys even in some countries such as Qatar, Jordan, and the United Arab Emirates, where there exist gender inequality. According to a report by UNESCO, girls had higher reading scores in every one of 43 countries surveyed. The report also suggests that boys are reading less fluently because of “a lack of engagement”. Statistically, 56 percent of the boys read only to get information, compared with 33 percent of the girls. However, nearly half of the girls said they read for at least 30 minutes a day, compared with less than one-third of the boys. Reading is a basis of learning proficiency and the lack of reading habit seems to be casting the boys dearly. The academic performances of girls in HSLC and HSSL examinations during the past decades have consistently shown that girls have been doing better than boys. Therefore, this assumes crucial importance on how to ‘reward hard work’ by acknowledging that Nagaland society must recognise the potential. Recognition should be evidenced by giving meritorious female students enhanced stipend especially for those form lower income groups. Female candidates should also be given priority for certain jobs in the government. Female students have proved, time and time again, that they have shown results for the investments made by their parents.

DailyDevotion The Staggering Question He said to me, “Son of man, can these bones live?” —Ezekiel 37:3 Can a sinner be turned into a saint? Can a twisted life be made right? There is only one appropriate answer— “O Lord God, You know” (Ezekiel 37:3). Never forge ahead with your religious common sense and say, “Oh, yes, with just a little more Bible reading, devotional time, and prayer, I see how it can be done.” It is much easier to do something than to trust in God; we see the activity and mistake panic for inspiration. That is why we see so few fellow workers with God, yet so many people working for God. We would much rather work for God than believe in Him. Do I really believe that God will do in me what I cannot do? The degree of hopelessness I have for others comes from never realizing that God has done anything for me. Is my own personal experience such a wonderful realization of God’s power and might that I can never have a sense of hopelessness for anyone else I see? Has any spiritual work been accomplished in me at all? The degree of panic activity in my life is equal to the degree of my lack of personal spiritual experience. “Behold, O My people, I will open your graves…” (Ezekiel 37:12). When God wants to show you what human nature is like separated from Himself, He shows it to you in yourself. If the Spirit of God has ever given you a vision of what you are apart from the grace of God (and He will only do this when His Spirit is at work in you), then you know that in reality there is no criminal half as bad as you yourself could be without His grace. My “grave” has been opened by God and “I know that in me (that is, in my flesh) nothing good dwells” (Romans 7:18). God’s Spirit continually reveals to His children what human nature is like apart from His grace.

n the battle between the Philistines and the Israelites, Goliath, the champion of the Philistines said to the Israelites, “Choose a man for yourselves, and let him come down to me. If he is able to fight with me and kill me, then we will be your servants. But if I prevail against him, and kill him, then you shall be our servants, and serve us.”1 Sam 17:8 & 9. Today, the Nagas are in the process of entering into a final agreement with the Government of India, which will be a decisive battle for the Nagas. If we win, our national future is saved, but if we lose, everything of us will fall. We are looking for an amicable and honourable solution without betraying our principle. We are fully aware of the fact that any kind of agreement that betrays the principle is no solution. This is our

T

The battle to decide our future repeated reminder to the Naga people and the government of India as well. If the root of a tree is cut off, the tree, the branches, the leaves, the flowers and the fruits die naturally. Can we expect anything good if our national principle is murdered? If our principle is murdered everything of us – our sovereign right, our history, our politics, our culture, our identity, our territory, our religion and future will fall and nothing will stand to keep our national identity alive. Our national principle is the foundation and center of our resistance movement, the bases of political negotiation and solution. Our relations with others will also be founded on this solid ground. The Naga people are definitely for solution, a solution that can protect and safeguard their

August 1947. It was the right decision taken in the right time. In 1950, the Indian Constituent Assembly invited the Nagas to join Union of India, but the Naga people out rightly rejected the invitation. That historic decision saved the future of the Nagas. In 1960, a section of Nagas made an agreement with the government of India called the 16- point agreement, betraying the Naga national principle. But it was rejected and condemned by the Naga people. On 11th November, 1975, another agreement called ‘the Shillong Accord’ was made to sign within the parameter of Indian constitution. At that crucial point of time, a national assembly was convened by Messrs. Isak Chishi Swu and Th. Muivah, the then NNC vice President and General

Secretary on 16th August 1976.The National Assembly condemned the Shillong Accord as a sell out and reaffirmed the national principle. Had it not been condemned by the national assembly and saved the nation, the history and the future of the Nagas would have been murdered by that very accord of treason. The future of the Nagas is threatened every now and then by the aggressors. History speaks of how a colonial power used the native people to fight against the native people. In the case of the Nagas, all of us have witnessed how the aggressors used the Nagas to fight against the Nagas. What a diabolic policy it was and it is still being seen today with more divisive venom. Finally, the government of India and NSCN had signed the historic ‘Framework Agreement’

on 3rd of August, 2015, the content of which is self-explanatory. NSCN leaders have categorically stated time and again that they will uphold the Framework Agreement in letter and spirit. But the representatives of the government of India have started giving wrong interpretation in order to confuse the common people. We too feel apprehensive about the clandestine plot of imposing another accord on the Nagas or hijacking the issue through their surrogates. The Nagas are again placed at a critical juncture where they have to make a decision to save their national future or perish. This is going to be the turning point of history. And now is the time to decide our destiny. Rh. Raising, Member, Collective Leadership, Caretaker Kilo Kilonser

The Naga Solution: Public views and observations

he supposed Naga solution in public view is perceived differently from what was intended by the Naga Nationalist organization. Now the concept of the so-called Naga solution is tending to find it within the Union of India. The Naga solution from the perspective of India and the Nagas are pole apart. The Nagas’ struggle is basically for a free nation like India and any nations of the world. India attained her freedom from the British domination on 15th August 1947. Nagas were left to be as they were before, as per the demand of the Naga club of 1929. Nagas declared themselves Independent on 14th August 1947 a day ahead of India’s. India started to apply and imposed her policies; Military and political strategies on the Nagas and their land. Subsequently, the Indo-Naga conflict rooted deep to last even to this day. Observed that, the current pressure for early solution without Naga National constitution and flag is no solution at all but a delusion. It is a pressure measure of India upon the Nagas to merge in to the Union of India. The pressures spellbinding the Nagas in dilemma today is either to accept the planned solution of India or to drop the ceasefire made for Indo-Naga talk. Solution as currently viewed is controversial to the Nagas. Nagas are different from Indian by race, culture and traditional beliefs and by their ancestral domain. In the word of Jawaharlal Nehru in his article in Deccan Cronical on 11/8/1960 stated, “Naga area is a separate entity. This Naga area has been separated the entity for the last few years. It has been a completely separated entity” Despite the fact, India keeps insisting and imposing their rule on the Nagas. This is the most singular reason that has drag the Indo-Naga talk to this day and the talk is hanging in a

I

national future. Therefore, they condemned the past agreements that were made at the expense of the national principle. The future of a people is made by their decisions. All the nation-states today are the products of decisions made by the respective peoples and nations. In the march for their final destination, the Nagas have faced a number of crucial moments where they took national decision and thereby saved their future. The free existence of the Nagas was threatened by the intrusion of the British colonial forces in 1832 where they occupied a part of Naga territory. However, the rest remained as free as ever. On the eve of the British departure, the Naga people took a decisive decision and declared their independence on 14th

balance. Now many Nagas are expressing their desire to accept whatever solution India is ready and willing to give, because they feel that they are fed up of Naga Underground activities and that divided Nagas cannot make an inclusive Naga solution. Many Nagas are not concern about Nagas rights. They only want a solution not even realizing a far-flung repercussion that could sweep away the whole Naga race, identity and the future hope of generation. The grim scenario of the Naga society today is that, many Indian-Nagas and politicians have been long subjected to Indian political power and system. They speak and think in term of India and for India. Whereas, many Naga leaders and publics think and hope that the Naga solution, i.e. Independence will be realized out of the Indo-Naga talk in progress. Hope differs. Solution differs. Two parties; India and Nagas differ in their expectations. Nagas are made confused and tired by India and Nagas themselves. The Nagaland state Government and its assembly members and politicians speaks with double connotations; one for Nagas and the other for India. They call themselves as facilitators. They are seen as balancing the talk and never definite either for India or Nagas. they see more of the Indian way of solution and less for the Nagas. This is the state of current affairs of the Naga society. Further observes that, many civil society leaders are also outspokenly expressing their rhetoric version of opinionated ideologies not definite either for Nagas or India. The Present Naga representative leaders, both Naga nationalists and the professed Facilitators of the state government and legislative forum are of divided positions on the subject of issues. One for Na-

gas’ independent and the other for merging in to the union of India. The subject of the talk is over-turned and recoining the terms and tone of the Indo-Naga talk. Some Naga politicians and leaders including the state legislators are giving negatives impression to the Nagas in open medias saying that “Sovereignty, flag and constitution are impossible”, which is equal to signaling that Nagas’ merging in to the Union of India is the only possible solution. That Nagas’ national identity will merge to that of Indian national identity. It appears, that the proposed solution of India is the only best way possible to settle the Nagas issue. Many Nagas thinks that the Framework agreement or Agreed position is a better deal than the 16 Points Agreement of 1960. Many Naga leaders feel that the Naga cause is not worth fighting for and opting to admit the defeat; denouncing the Nagas cause and rights by accepting whatever India has planned to give to the Nagas. The fate of the Nagas will be determined by the current nature and progress of Indo-Naga solution talk. Naga publics observes that, the present Naga solution approach either by Frame-work Agreement or Agreed position are both Indian tempered policies like 9 Point agreement of 1947, 16 Points Agreement of 1960s, Shillong resolutions as Shillong Accord of 1975. All agreements made so far could not resolve or settle the Nagas’ case. Whereas, the history, the origin and the rights of the Nagas as a people distinct from the people of India remains strong and tall that India without military force and political logic cannot not settle. If India could settle Nagas’ case, it could only be done by force means against the Nagas’ rights or leave the Nagas case to the Nagas themselves. India asserts and holds that the only

possible settlement would be of force-union. Opine that Nagas should hold back the talk and refrain from the present offered solution and save the Nagas from the impending downfall. Despite some Nagas who works for India, to accept the offered solution, there are still many who remain strong as Non-Indian Nagas who will take up the torch of Naga national cause forward if the current talk failed. Reasoned that, the Nagas are divided by opinions and ideological differences on Naga Nationality. The Divided Nagas are good reasons and ground position for India to play their occupational politic, imposing their willful assertion upon the Nagas through the many subscribed Indian-Nagas. Many Nagas are spelling words of impatience and resentments in open spaces and medias; blaming the Naga nationalists for dragging the case for too long. But what and who are responsible for the matter to be blamed? The Naga Nationalists, Naga Indian politicians or Naga publics? Or India? Every civic Naga knows that, it is the divided Nagas at home that the rights of the Nagas could not be well-placed before India. The two Nagas; Indian Nagas and the true Nagas at war are the reasons to be blamed for the current level of hurdles that has dragged and drowned the Indo-Naga political issues. The Nagas who are party to India will continue to roar and roast louder with their oratory or rhetoric vocal to persuade the Nagas for early solution whatever India is ready to do it. The NSCN-K (Niki Sumi) group has yet to bring out their position on the possibility of Naga Solution. Their silence over the current talk may mean good for the Nagas. Let us reconsider the whole matter in the light of truth and for the next Naga generation before taking a further step ahead. The sooner or longer the Nagas’ case

Religion: Essential or Redundant

n an age like ours we have come to point perhaps be described as ‘crisis of hope’. In such a setting, where do we base our belief and hope. Our dreams of realizing an authentic and integral humanity seem to be ebbing out. Will religion translate our desires, hopes and aspirations ‘here and now’? Religion promises a maze of things, but in reality, what we are witnessing is gradual decadence of religion in its claims and practices, words and actions. While on the other, science and technology are filling the vacuum/ space religion has occupied thus far. The speed at which science and technology are progressing instills and offers renewed hopes and realizable vision for human

futures, as though they are ‘our masters’ and ‘our gods/lords’. We live in such templates that prompts us to understand what religion is all about. Max Weber, an eminent social scientist viewed religion in line with scientific sense to human responses by offering meaning and thus deriving objectivity not succumbing to value judgments. In order to understand how religion responds to human pathos and pains such as death, aging, oppression, injustice, birth and suffering Weber spent years to understand all these in scientific manner. Max Weber viewed religion by proposing that religion enables people to pursue their interest. A classic example is that religion actually gave rise to the

modern capitalism – The Protestant Ethic and the Spirit of Capitalism. He showed that how religious beliefs steered the direction of the economic and technological forces already in motion. On the other side of the fence we come across Karl Marx, known for intellectual acumen and scholarly pursuits. In his analysis, he viewed humans make religion, religion does not make man (sic). In his scathing critique: “Religion is the sigh of the oppressed creature, the heart of the heartless world, and the soul of the soulless condition. It is the opium of the world.” Marx’s views regarding religion deserves reflection as he does appear to suggest a largely positive role that religion could play in an exploitative and alienating

society. Since human beings have unpredictable and distressing nature of killing one another because of religious differences and some of our most religious citizens wear the biggest blinders. In such a backdrop, Marx seems to be right that our society can use a “heart” and a “soul” wherever we might find it. As Paul Zacharia points out, “Thus”, Marx concludes that “the criticism of Heaven turns into the criticism of Earth, the criticism of theology into the criticism of politics.” In conclusion, Max Weber believed that religion could be a force for social change, while Karl Marx categorically viewed religion as a tool used by capitalist society to perpetuate inequality. Dr. John Mohan Razu

may take, the identity, the rights and the aspiration of the Nagas must not be compromised or bartered for settling the Naga Political issues. The current talk, bargaining on the issues of Naga flag and constitution is a needless creation put into the parley for diverting or complicating the progress of the talk. The issue is to be decided by the will of the Nagas after the solution. The issue is seen as the subtle art of R.N. Ravi, former Indo-Naga Interlocutor and Governor of Nagaland to puzzle and muzzle the Nagas. Reasoned and well understood that India has its own flag and constitution so also the Nagas without any external interference or question. Restricting the use of one’s own symbolic flag is nothing but a direct willful imposition of suppressive rule or a policy to destroy the peoples’ history and their political rights. The Indo-Naga case may take more time till India realize and quit the Nagas. When both India and Nagas resolve to co-exist with due respect and recognition of each other’s rights, position and identities. Nagas must stand on their position as AZ Phizo did in matter of dealing with India as a different national entity. The present Naga national leaders must remain true to the Nagas’ cause as did Jadonang who stood to his principle and the cause till his last. No power on earth can subdue the will of the people who stand their ground on the principle of truth. Abraham Lincoln proved the fact, “One man with the truth is majority” Nagas must not give up their hard-earned historical rights and value of their identity as a distinct people. It is better to close the Indo-Naga talk than for the Nagas to subscribe or succumb to Indian politics that will forever close the Naga chapter. Gwangphun Gangmei, A Social Research Activist

Suggestion for yearly calendar in NPSC and NSSB

Sir,

It would really be great if NPSC and NSSB members could come up with the yearly calendar when to declare result and when to conduct exam so that it will enable members to work systematically as per the time frame and also help the aspirant to prepare for their mains exam accordingly. Taking 5-6 months long even to declare prelims result affect those aspirants whose marks are in dilemma i.e (weather the mark he/she score will be selected for mains exam), so on behalf of all I appeal NPSC & NSSB members to come up with the yearly calendar. Secondly, like how technical post and lecturer post falls under NPSC but their exam are conducted different from that of Civil services exam, similarly teachers post should be included under NSSB same as that of the lecturer post which falls under NPSC so that meritocracy and transparency is practice. NAGALAND POST, DIMAPUR THURSDAY, JUNE 2, 2022

Police probe KK’s death; political blame game begins KOLKATA, JUN 1 (PTI): Kolkata Police has registered a case of unnatural death over the demise of renowned Bollywood singer Krishnakumar Kunnath, popularly known as KK, and started an investigation, even as opposition BJP blamed the West Bengal government for lapses, drawing a sharp retort from the ruling TMC which asked the saffron party not to politicise death. Post-mortem examination of the singer’s mortal remains was conducted and the report is awaited, police said. “Police has spoken with manager and other staffers of the hotel where KK had put up. A case of unnatural death has been registered with New Market Police Station, under whose jurisdiction the hotel falls where the singer felt unwell

before being taken to a hospital,” an officer told PTI. “We are scrutinising CCTV footage to understand what had happened before he was taken to the hospital,” the police officer said, adding that two persons have been questioned in connection with the case. An initial probe has revealed that the 53-year-

old singer, who was on a two-day tour to Kolkata to perform at two college programmes, was “almost mobbed” by fan followers at the hotel where he had returned to after performing at Nazrul Mancha auditorium in the southern part of the city, he said. “The singer had allowed a couple of fan follow-

ers to take snaps with him, but then he refused to carry on with the selfie session. He left the lobby and then went upstairs where he had reportedly stumbled and fallen on the floor. People who were with him informed the hotel authorities,” the officer said. KK was then rushed to a private hospital in the southern part of the city where he was declared “brought dead” by doctors, he said, adding that probably because of the fall, the singer had two injuries -- one on the left side of his forehead and another on his lips. “He was brought to the hospital around 10 pm. It’s unfortunate that we could not treat him,” a senior official of the hospital said. Doctors at the hospital said they suspected “cardiac arrest” to be the cause of the

death. “The autopsy report will throw light on the exact cause of death. We are waiting for it,” the police officer said. Meanwhile, West Bengal government paid last respect to KK with gun salute to his mortal remains. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, who supervised the proceedings, paid floral tributes to the late singer, whose body was kept at Rabindra Sadan for some time. Banerjee was seen consoling KK’s wife and other family members who were present at the venue. The singer’s body was brought to Rabindra Sadan after post-mortem examination was conducted at staterun SSKM Hospital earlier in the day, an official said. His mortal remains were taken to Netaji Subhas

Chandra Bose International Airport and handed over to his family, who will fly to Mumbai with the body, he said. Banerjee cut short her programme in Bankura district and reached Kolkata. “The sudden and untimely demise of the Bollywood playback singer KK shocks and saddens us. My colleagues have been working from last night to ensure that all requisite support is given for necessary formalities, his rites and to his family now. My deep condolences,” she tweeted. “KK was a youth icon. We have lost a great singer,” she said. The singer had performed at Nazrul Mancha Tuesday evening and also on Monday. He was scheduled to return to New Delhi on Wednesday.

7 BJP spokesperson booked for ‘objectionable’ remarks

Nupur Sharma

HYDERABAD, JUNE 1 (PTI): A case against BJP spokesperson Nupur Sharma has been registered for allegedly making objectionable remarks against Prophet Muhammad during a television news debate, police said. The Cyber Crime Police booked the case under sections 153A (promoting enmity between groups), 505(2) (statements conducing to public mischief) and other relevant IPC sections

based on a complaint of a sub-inspector. The complainant accused Sharma of intentionally insulting Prophet Muhammad by making abusive remarks and maliciously insulting Islam during the debate. “It has enraged and offended all Muslims as a community,” the complainant said. “She not only hurt the feelings of Muslims but also created enmity between different sections of society,” the complaint read.

Hindu litigant group removes Coast Guard apprehends Pak fishing boat father-son duo as its lawyers with 7 crew members off Gujarat coast

VARANASI (UP), JUN 1 (PTI): A Hindu right-wing group involved in litigation related to various high-profile matters like Gyanvapi mosque, Idgah mosque in Mathura and Taj Mahal has decided to remove lawyers Harishankar Jain and his son Vishnu Jain from its all cases, its president said. Jitendra Singh Visen, president of Vishwa Vaidik Sanatan Sangh (VVSS), however, refused to divulge the reason behind the decision. When asked about it, Vishnu Jain told PTI that they will continue to represent four of the petitioners in the Gyanvapi-Shringar Gauri case hearing in Varanasi. Visen said that they will move an application for the removal of the two

lawyers at the next hearing. “We have decided to remove the two lawyers from appearing in all our cases from the district court to the Supreme Court. We will file an application for cancellation of their name at the next court hearing in the Kashi VishwanathGyanvapi mosque case,” the VVSS chief told PTI. Apart from the Gyanvapi mosque case, the fatherson duo is representing the plaintiffs associated with VVSS in Krishna Janmabhoomi-Idgah mosque in Mathura, seeking restoration of 27 Hindu and Jain temples in Qutub Minar in Delhi, the one seeking a ‘‘fact-finding inquiry’‘ into the history of the Taj Mahal and the “opening of 22 rooms’‘ on the monument’s premises.

No contraband was found during the preliminary search of the boat in the sea but intensive rummaging will be undertaken after it is brought to Okha on June 2, they said. Speaking about the operation, the sources said that when the ICG ship directed the boat, moving suspiciously in the Indian waters close to the notional maritime boundary with Pakistan, to stop, it started evasive manoeuvring. “ICG ship Arinjay, despite very rough sea and challenging weather, manoeuvred and stopped the boat. On close examination, it was revealed to be a Pakistani boat,” they said. The preliminary investigation was conducted at the sea, however, due to the rough sea, the detailed joint investigation with the ATS will be conducted at the Okha harbour, they added.

The chief secretary has appealed to the citizens to make use of the facility and share information so action could be initiated against unauthorized people collecting illegal taxation. He said that the state government was committed to good governance, adding that the initiative was in line with the commitment for good governance. DGP T John Longkumer said the six “actionable cases” included illegal taxation from vehicles and poultry in Dimapur and Assam and Chungtia. On receiving the information, DGP said patrolling team swung into action and, though nothing could be seen on the spot, investiga-

tions had been initiated. Further, DGP said the police also received a complaint about Kohima Municipal Council collecting tax from wholesalers. After the additional SP was informed about the matter, the KMC advisor was asked to take up the matter. Similar cases were also reported in Zunheboto district where Zunheboto Town Council allegedly collected entry gate taxes. Accordingly, he said the district and police administration were informed and ZTC was asked to discontinue the collection. On the appeal of various organizations under Dimapur district to relax some taxes under DMC, the chief secretary said that consultation was held with the department and the accordingly department was asked to work out alternative ways to collect revenue,

adding the exercise was on. Principal secretary home Abhijit Sinha informed that some departments were working out a proposal to set up a check gate. He said that the government, if found necessary, could take up the matter. On delay in disbursement of salary to the government employees, Alam said that trainings were conducted to DDOs and DDOs and asked to segregate the employees with Personal Information Management System (PIMS) and without PIMS. However, he said that instead of segregating, the entire bill was getting stuck since some have PIMS and some did not have. The chief secretary said that the finance department was, therefore, asked to issue fresh instructions

Oting SIT report... (From p-1) sent to Mon again on June 1, 2022. It may be mentioned that the Indian Army last month said that the force has completed the Court of Inquiry into the Oting firing incident in Mon district. Following the massacre of 13 civilians by 21 Paras on December 4, 2021, the state government formed an SIT to probe the incident on December 5, 2021 while the Indian under the 3 Corps ordered its Court of Inquiry (CoI) headed by a Major General to inquire into the incident.

Nagas were under threat and extortion by “our own people” and so they do not want such a struggle to remain any longer. He insisted that people should have the freedom to decide their own fate and others should not decide as Nagas would not involve in matters of others. With regard to the involvement of Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma with UDA government for Naga solution, Therie said Nagas respect all neighbouring States, but the latter too should not involve in Naga political issue as there was no need for the issue to be taken to another State. He declared that the ground reality of political solution was about Nagaland since stakeholders have accepted that sovereignty and integration have been ruled out by the Centre. He claimed that the Centre was trying to appoint a new governor and that his party might wait for the next incumbent to before submitting a representation.

except to amend the NLA service rules. As the Cabinet had already approved creation of the post principal secretary, NASSA said relying on the enforcement of the May 18, 2022 amendment notification, the retired officer was proposed to be appointed as principal secretary. However, NASSA said it strongly objected to it. Further, NASSA said that the operationalization of e-Vidhan application in the NLA by utilizing the expertise service of Antony did not necessarily warrant his extension of service as an administrative head of the NLA, since his service could be utilized as a resource person for the project as earlier. NASSA also clarified that the e-Vidhan project was initiated by former Speaker and former commissioner & secretary and not the incumbent.

(From p-1) why the group would back out from the negotiations. He said backing out after signing the Framework Agreement and later talking about the flag and constitution without sovereignty held no water as Nagas were not fools. Asked whether the final solution would be like the 16-Point Agreement or 9-Point Agreement, Therie pointed out that while the 16-Point Agreement was reached within a year; the 9-Point Agreement was reached within a month. However, he said no one was able to give a concrete suggestion of what “we want” even after 25 years of negotiations have passed. On whether the Naga issue would drag on as had happened despite signing of the 16-Point Agreement, Therie replied that now people were different and will not shelter anybody. Recalling that NNC and FGN fought without extorting, torturing, intimidating people but stood for the people, he said today

(From p-1) Rules Amendment Committee, constituted with a mandate to make recommendation for revision/amendment of the existing service rules. It pointed out that Antony, after retirement, was re-appointed as commissioner & secretary of NLA in 2020 “under exceptional circumstances”, for a contract period of two years (June 1, 2020May 31, 2022) which was necessitated at that time due to non-availability of the officers in the feeder cadre (required criteria) and other factors necessary to be promoted to the post of secretary. As his tenure was due to expire on May 31, NASSA said Antony hastily amended the service rules to accommodate himself as a superannuated officer since there was no more provision within the Government established process for re-appointment

(From p-1) The Government of India and Naga people are talking and meeting to the extent that durable and sustainable peace should be established in Nagaland.” He added, “So far as the accord or permanent solution is concerned it should be left to the Government of India and NSCN (I-M) as it is a very complex issue and no other person should comment on it as every comment has the potential or may have potential to complicate the issue. So one must stay away from commenting on this issue. We should only offer our good wishes and best wishes.” He added that his visit to Nagaland is with regard to BJP’s relationship with Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party (NDPP). “This visit is only to discharge my role as convenor of NEDA. I do not interfere in Naga peace talks unless I am asked to meet certain leadership to clarify certain issues. As of now AK Mishra is dealing with it. I am not associated with you in any way and I am not meeting any NSCN-IM leaders.”

uptick in selling prices, a monthly survey said on Wednesday. The seasonally adjusted S&P Global India Manufacturing Purchasing Managers’ Index (PMI) stood at 54.6 in May, little changed from 54.7 in April, pointing to a sustained recovery across the sector. “The Indian Rupee appreciated against the dollar on Wednesday even as slightly weak domestic GDP data may not pause RBI’s tightening which in turn may not plug activities,” said Sriram Iyer, Senior Research Analyst at Reliance Securities. Dollar sales by some banks also boosted the local currency, he added. The US Dollar Index traded flat to marginally higher in Asian trade lifted by higher Treasury yields as global inflation worries flared again. According to Jateen Trivedi, VP Research Analyst at LKP Securities, “Rupee can gain positive cues towards 77.25 which is the 20 DMA in daily charts.”

Moder n trade witnessed stabilisation in recent quarters, with volume growth increasing by 5.3 per cent and traditional trade saw degrowth of –4.9 per cent in volumes led by a shift towards smaller packs in the January-March quarter. E-commerce grew at 5.6 per cent in value compared to last year. “Consumers are scaling back more on discretionary spends within the nonfood categories. Overall, there is an evident shift by consumers to smaller pack sizes to manage external factors for both foods and non-foods. Keeping this in mind, manufacturers and retailers need to ensure the right assortment of pack sizes across brands to account for this consumption shift”, said Sonika Gupta, customer success lead (India), NielsenIQ said in the release.

tility remained low despite marginal weakness in domestic and global equities,” said Gaurang Somaiya, Forex & Bullion Analyst, Motilal Oswal Financial Services. On the domestic front, GDP and fiscal numbers came in mixed and had limited impact on the currency, Somaiya added. Dollar rose on Tuesday after a meeting between the US President and Fed Chairman suggested that policy focus will be on inflation. The BSE Sensex ended 185.24 points or 0.33 per cent lower at 55,381.17, while the broader NSE Nifty slipped 61.80 points or 0.37 per cent to 16,522.75. Foreign institutional investors were net sellers in the capital market on Tuesday as they offloaded shares worth Rs 1,003.56 crore, as per stock exchange data. Meanwhile, India’s manufacturing sector growth steadied in May as demand showed signs of resilience and improved further in spite of another

increase in the exit of small manufacturers in the quarter ended march due to high input cost pressures, and not being able to pass on the costs to the consumers. “In continuation from last year, macro-economic indicators are still guiding consumption patterns for the Indian consumer, and they are feeling the impact of the price increase -especially in the food and essentials categories”, Satish Pillai, managing director India, NielsenIQ said in the release. He added, “Although global macro factors persist, the impetus by the government if supported by the normal monsoon in the country, would be encouraging. Within this environment, retail trade continues to be optimistic, and traditional trade shopkeepers have maintained stock levels, as well as assortment.”

MUMBAI, JUN 1 (PTI): The rupee recovered from its record low to close 21 paise higher at 77.50 against the American currency on Wednesday as dollar sales by some banks offset the impact of elevated crude oil prices and persistent foreign fund outflows. At the interbank forex market, the rupee opened at 77.58 against the greenback and moved in a range of 77.51 to 77.62 in the day’s trade. The rupee finally ended at 77.50, higher by 21 paise over its previous close. On Tuesday, the rupee had declined by 17 paise to close at its all-time low of 77.71 as surging US bond yields dampened the appeal of riskier assets. The dollar index, which gauges the greenback’s strength against a basket of six currencies, rose 0.15 per cent to 101.90. Brent crude futures, the global oil benchmark, surged 1.84 per cent to USD 117.73 per barrel. “Rupee continued to trade in a narrow range and vola-

Within foods, impulse beats the slowdown (positive volume growth of 1.5 per cent) with consumers focusing on smaller packs in the category seen in salty snacks, chocolates, and confectionery. MUMBAI, JUN 1 (AGENCIES): India’s fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG) market grew 6 per cent in the January-March quarter over last year led by double-digit price growth, according to Nielsen IQ’s report. However, the sector’s volume stood at -4.1 per cent compared to last year due to a decline in consumption across all zones and town classes. “A decline in consumption is echoed across all zones and the town classes, but more prominent in rural markets, which saw a 5.3 per cent dip – the highest consumption slowdown in the last three quarters. The south and north zones witnessed more than 5 per cent volume decline,” Nielsen IQ said in its release. NAGALAND POST, DIMAPUR THURSDAY, JUNE 2, 2022

SAMBA (J-K), JUN 1 (PTI): Protests against the killing of a Hindu school teacher in Kulgam continued to rock several parts of Jammu, Samba and Kathua districts of Jammu and Kashmir on the second consecutive day on Wednesday. Rajni Bala (36) was shot dead by terrorists following which Kashmiri Pandits, employed under the PM package, had threatened to undertake mass migration from the Valley if they were not relocated to safe places within the next 24 hours. The protesters on Wednesday blocked the Jammu-Pathankot Highway in Samba and demanded dismissal of officers responsible for failing to transfer Bala to a safe place that resulted in her killing. Meanwhile, Samba, the district the victim belonged to, observed a complete shut down to protest against the killing. Posted at a government school in Gopalpora, Bala was shot in the head by terrorists on Tuesday. She succumbed to injuries at a hospital, according to police.

Calling the Valley’s Hindu population a “ s o f t t a r ge t ” , Ja m mu and Kashmir BJP chief R av i n d e r R a i n a , w h o visited the bereaved family in Samba and faced protest, said there is an urgent need to formulate a security plan for the safety of the community as Pakistani terrorists were targeting them constantly. Hundreds of protesters took out a rally toward the Jammu-Pathankot Highway and raised anti-government and anti-Pakistan slogans. They staged a sit-in on the highway, blocking the vehicular traffic and demanded dismissal of officers, especially that of

Kulgam CEO, for turning down repeated requests of the couple and delaying Bala’s transfer to Kulgam for months. The protestors also raised slogans against L i e u t e n a n t G o ve r n o r Manoj Sinha over the complete failure on the security front to protect the Hindus ser ving in government offices in the Valley and burnt an effigy of the administration. The administration led by Deputy commissioner Anuradha reached out to protesters to lift the blockade on the highway, but the agitated protesters continued their demonstration.

The couple was transferred on Monday, just a day before the attack. Tuesday was supposed to be Bala’s last day at her old school. Kumar said Hindus are soft targets in Kashmir and the administration should relocate them in view of the fear psychosis triggered in the wake of the selective killings by terrorists. M e a n w h i l e, t h e protesters told Raina that their government led by L-G Sinha has totally failed to protect Hindus in Kashmir. The protesters also tried to heckle him, but several BJP activists and cops intervened. “Hindus are being killed in Muslim majority Kashmir under the BJP r ule. BJP steps up attack on Kejriwal for defending AAP minister

NEW DELHI, JUN 1 (PTI): Intensifying its attack on Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal over his defence of Satyendar Jain, the BJP on Wednesday cited a host of details linked to the money laundering case allegedly involving the city health minister and asked why he has been “protecting” him. Union Minister Smriti Irani noted that Kejriwal had said on Tuesday that corruption was tantamount to “gaddari” (betrayal) with the country. She asked why the AAP national convener was giving protection to a “gaddar” (traitor) who allegedly deceived the treasury and the people. Irani fired off a number of questions at Kejriwal, who has slammed the Enforcement Directorate case of money laundering against Jain as forged and politically motivated as she shared details of allegations against the latter to ask the chief minister if they were true or not. Mocking Kejriwal, she said the chief minister has given a clean chit to a “corrupt man” by assuming the role of a judge. Naming four shell companies allegedly owned by Jain and his family m e m b e r s, I r a n i a s k e d Kejriwal if it was true that Jain laundered over Rs 16.39 crore with the help of hawala operators. T h e I n c o m e Ta x department had rejected Jain’s contention that it was his associates’ money, and held that the “ill-gotten” money belonged to him, Irani said. A division bench of the Delhi High Court in 2019 agreed with the IT department’s findings, she noted, asking Kejriwal why he hadn’t acted against Jain since then. “He (Jain) is under his direct protection,” she said. Hitting back at Kejriwal over his charge that the case against Jain was

Smriti Irani

politically motivated, Irani asked him if he believed that the court was a political party. Under the Income Disclosure Scheme of 2016, she claimed, Jain had himself admitted that Rs 16.39 crore was laundered and his firm had offered to pay tax on it. She asked the AAP supremo if such a person should continue to be a minister in his government. Jain, who holds various portfolios, including health, home and power, in the Kejriwal government, was arrested by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in a case of money laundering on Monday. Seeking to put Kejriwal in the dock, the Union minister cited the allegation that the shell firms owned by Jain bought 200 bighas of land in the vicinity of some unauthorised colonies in Delhi with the laundered money, and asked the chief minister to explain if the charge was true or not. She also asked if the Delhi government’s move to regularise these colonies was linked to Jain’s investment. The money was laundered during 201016, Irani said, trashing Jain’s claim that it was his architecture consultancy firm’s consultancy fee. No structure has come upon the land for which the purported consultation was offered, she added. The Union minister also referred to a CBI charge sheet against Jain in a disproportionate assets case.

NEW DELHI, JUN 1 (PTI): The ED has attached at least 33 bank accounts of Islamist organisation PFI and a linked organisation called Rehab India Foundation as part of an anti-money laundering investigation against them, officials said on Wednesday. The accounts hold more than Rs 68 lakh. The orders have been issued under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA), the officials said. They said 23 accounts of the Popular Front of India (PFI) having Rs 59,12,051 and 10 of Rehab India Foundation having Rs 9,50,030 have been attached. The Islamist organisation was formed in 2006 in Kerala and is headquartered in Delhi. K Y M C

Moosewala murder: police to question gangster Bishnoi

CHANDIGARH, JUN 1 (PTI): The Punjab police on Wednesday said it will question jailed gangster Lawrence Bishnoi after bringing him to the state in connection with the murder of Punjabi singer Sidhu Moosewala. According to the police, Bishnoi’s gang was behind the killing. At present, Bishnoi is in custody of the Delhi Police’s Special Cell in a case under the Arms Act and other sections related to assault on a public servant. Famous Punjabi singer and Congress leader Moosewala was shot dead on Sunday by unidentified assailants in Punjab’s Mansa district, a day after the state government curtailed his security cover. Talking to reporters in Mansa on Wednesday, Senior Superintendent of Police Gaurav Toora said the police have got important leads and they are working on it. On whether Mansa police will bring Bishnoi on remand, the SSP said, “ D e f i n i t e ly. We h ave information that the Delhi Police has taken the remand of Bishnoi. After that we will make him join

Lawrence Bishnoi

the investigation in this case as per the law.” Meanwhile, Bishnoi had filed a plea before the Delhi High Court, claiming apprehension of a fake encounter by the Punjab Police. He had sought direction to the Tihar Jail authority and the Delhi Police to ensure that necessar y safeguards, including videography, are taken for his safety before giving his custody to any other state police, including the Punjab Police. O n We d n e s d a y, however, he withdrew the plea. His counsel submitted before Justice Swarana Kanta Sharma that he wished to withdraw the petition and wanted to file it before the Punjab and Haryana High Court. The Punjab Police has described Moosewala’s

murder as a case of an inter-gang rivalry. Canadabased Goldy Brar, who is a member of the Bishnoi gang, has claimed responsibility of the murder. SSP Toora further said the police have traced the route the criminals involved in the murder took. “From where they came, how they conducted a recce and how they escaped – we have cleared this all,” he said. He said different police teams, including the cyber cell, were involved in the investigation. “We have got important leads and we are working on that,” he added. Refer ring to the murder, the SSP said it was the work of organised criminals and gangsters. He said two gangsters were brought here on production warrants from prisons. One person has already been arrested in this case, he said. “They are being questioned,” the SSP added. The police on Tuesday said they had arrested Manpreet Singh in the Moosewala murder case. Singh has been accused of supplying vehicles to the assailants who were involved in the killing.

(From p-1) It also asked UNC whether it could ensure retention of the indefinite ceasefire between the Centre and Naga negotiators under which environment such dialogues took place?. NTC maintained that such senseless resolutions exposed the ground reality that the loss and sufferings of the Nagas of Nagaland was a gain and enjoyment for Nagas in Manipur. NTC said that people of Nagaland were tired of multiple taxations and whoever –facilitators or negotiators – was using delaying tactics to thwart the political solution , were exploiters of bona fide citizens of Nagaland and therefore it totally disagreed with UNC. Opposes bid to suppress freedom of expression: NTC asserted that Nagas are basically democratic people and that Naga democracy was one of the purest forms of democracies in the world which Nagas inherited this culture of democracy from their forefathers. NTC pointed out that dissent was the quintessence of democracy and that it remained an inalienable part of the culture and tradition of the bona fide Nagas in whatever they had to be transparent in expressing their true feelings for the wellbeing of all. Therefore, NTC said it detested the attempt of political groups to curtail or intimidate Nagas from expressing their opinion or observations as such attempts were “alien to our culture”.

LAKHIMPUR KHERI (UP), JUN 1 (PTI): BKU leader Dilbag Singh, a witness in the Lakhimpur Kheri violence case, was allegedly attacked by two unidentified men here, police said on Wednesday. The attack took place Tuesday night when the Bhar tiya Kisan Union (Tikait) district president was returning home from Aliganj- Muda road in Gola kotwali area in his SUV when the bike-borne miscreants opened fire on him. S i n g h , h o w e v e r, sustained no injuries in the attack. Singh is among the witnesses in Tikunia violence of October 3, 2021 in which eight people, including four farmers and a journalist, died. Union minister Ajay Mishra’s son Ashish Mishra was arrested in connection with the incident. Talking to PTI over phone, the BKU leader said the miscreants punctured a tyre of his SUV owing to which he had to stop the vehicle. “The assailants attempted to open the gates and windows of the SUV. When failed, they fired two shots at the window pane of the driver side,” he said. Singh said he was driving the SUV and was alone.

Bullet marks on Dilbagh Singh’s car.

He said sensing the intentions of the attackers, he folded the driver seat and bent down towards the floor. As the vehicle windows were covered with dark film, the attackers could not decide the BKU leader’s status in the SUV and fled away on their bikes. Singh said he had sent his official gunman (provided to him by the district administration) on leave owing to his son’s sudden sickness on the day. He lodged a complaint with Gola kotwali police soon after the attack. He added that he had also informed BKU-Tikait spokesperson Rakesh Tikait about the incident. Meanwhile, Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP) Ar un Kumar

Singh told PTI that on the complaint of Dilbag Singh, an FIR under appropriate sections of IPC had been lodged. He said forensic teams had been sent to the spot to examine the vehicle and the crime scene and collect evidences. He further said police were investigating the case and efforts were on to identify the attackers. The ASP added that the BKU-Tikait district president sent his gunman on leave on his own without intimating the senior police authorities. “If the matter of leave to his gunman had been intimated to us, we would have provided him another gunman as an alternative arrangement,” he said.

New Australian govt includes record 13 women ministers

Women ministers with Australian PM Anthony Albanese.

CANBERRA, JUN 1 (AP): A record 13 women, including the first female Muslim, were sworn in as ministers in Australia’s new government on Wednesday. The ceremony conducted by Governor-General David Hurley in the capital, Canberra, came 11 days after new Prime Minister Anthony Albanese led the center-left Labor Party to an election victory over the incumbent conservatives. “Proud to lead an inclusive government that is as diverse as Australia itself,” Albanese wrote on Twitter. “Welcome to all these new Labor members.” Anne Aly was sworn in as Australia’s first female Muslim minister while Ed Husic became the first Muslim to serve in Cabinet. Linda Burney became the first woman, and only the second Indigenous person, to serve as Indigenous Affairs minister. Albanese and Foreign

Minister Penny Wong were sworn in early last week so they could fly to Tokyo for a summit with President Joe Biden, Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Of the 30 ministers appointed to the new government, nearly half are women. Women also hold a record 10 spots out of 23 in core Cabinet roles. With some votes still to be counted from last month’s election, the Labor Party has secured enough seats to hold an outright majority in the 150-seat House. Albanese’s Cabinet includes some new faces as well as some lawmakers who served in the previous Labor government that last held power nine years ago. “We have an overflow of talent on our side of the parliament,” Albanese said, adding that “it’s the most experienced incoming Labor government in our history since federation.”

At least 10 people, including a ruling party MP, were killed in the May 9 clashes triggered by a pro-government group attacking anti-government protesters, who were demanding resignation of President Gotabaya Rajapaksa over the country’s worst economic crisis that led to acute shortages of staple food, fuel and power. Johnston Fernando,

a former senior minister who was seen making an inflammatory speech addressing the Mahinda Rajapaksa supporters before they went about attacking the unarmed protesters, has been named a suspect. Police had earlier recorded a statement from him. At least two of his parliamentary colleagues, state ministers are currently under custody. The backlash from the attack saw personal properties of over 70 parliamentarians of the ruling party facing arson attacks. Over 1,700 people have been arrested for the attacks. He added that such supplies would not encourage Ukraine’s leadership to resume stalled peace talks. Ukrainian officials have been asking allies for longer-range missile systems that can fire a barrage of rockets hundreds of miles away, in the hopes of turning the tide of the war. One official noted that the advanced rocket systems will give Ukrainian forces greater precision in targeting Russian assets inside Ukraine. U.S. President Joe Biden has agreed to provide Ukraine with rockets that can strike with precision at long-range Russian targets as part of a new U.S. package to help Kyiv defend itself in the three-month-old war that began with Russia’s Feb. 24 invasion. President Joe Biden confirmed that he’s decided to “provide the Ukrainians with more advanced rocket systems and munitions that will enable them to more precisely strike key targets on the battlefield in Ukraine.” Biden had said Monday that the US would not send Ukraine “rocket systems that can strike into Russia.” Any weapons system can shoot into Russia if it’s close enough to the border. The aid package expected to be unveiled Wednesday would send what the US considers medium-range rockets — they generally can travel about 45 miles (70 kilometers), the

nomic assistance recently passed by Congress. The rocket systems would be part of Pentagon drawdown authority, so would involve taking weapons from U.S. inventory and getting them into Ukraine quickly. Ukrainian troops would also need training on the new systems, which could take at least a week or two. Officials said the plan is to send Ukraine the High Mobility Artillery Rocket System, or HIMARS, which is mounted on a truck and can carry a container with six rockets. The system can launch a medium-range rocket, which is the current plan, but is also capable of firing a longerrange missile, the Army Tactical Missile System, which has a range of about 190 miles (300 kilometers) and is not part of the plan. Since the war began in February, the U.S. and its allies have tried to walk a narrow line: send Ukraine weapons needed to fight off Russia, but stop short of providing aid that will inflame Russian President Vladimir Putin and trigger a broader conflict that could spill over into other parts of Europe.

Joe Biden

“In order to trust (someone), you need to have experience with situations when such promises were kept. Regretfully, there is no such experience whatsoever,” Peskov said. The expectation is that Ukraine could use the rockets in the eastern Donbas region, where they could both intercept Russian artillery and take out Russian positions in towns where fighting is intense, such as Sievierodonetsk. Sievierodonetsk is important to Russian efforts to capture the Donbas before more Western arms arrive to bolster Ukraine’s defense. WASHINGTON, JUN 1 (AP): The Biden administration says it will send Ukraine a small number of high-tech, medium-range rocket systems, a critical weapon that Ukrainian leaders have been begging for as they struggle to stall Russian progress in the Donbas region. The rocket systems are part of a new $700 million tranche of security assistance for Ukraine from the US that will include helicopters, Javelin anti-tank weapon systems, tactical vehicles, spare parts and more, two senior administration officials said Tuesday. The officials spoke on the condition of anonymity to preview the weapons package that will be formally unveiled on Wednesday. The US decision to provide the advance rocket systems tries to strike a balance between the desire to help Ukraine battle ferocious Russian artillery barrages while not providing arms that could allow Ukraine to hit targets deep inside Russia and trigger an escalation in the war. NAGALAND POST, DIMAPUR THURSDAY, JUNE 2, 2022

UK PM forced to explain 4 killed, 14 injured as 6.1-magnitude Rumblings within Lanka actions in fresh partygate row earthquake hits China’s Sichuan province govt over 21st Amendment COLOMBO, JUN 1 (PTI): Sri Lankan Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe’s plan to introduce the 21st Amendment to the Constitution to empower Parliament over the executive president has met with resistance within the ruling SLPP coalition, party sources said on Wednesday. Wickremesinghe on Sunday batted for the 21st Amendment to the Constitution, saying it will curb the president’s unlimited powers while enhancing the role of Parliament in governing the debt-ridden country which is also facing an unprecedented political turmoil. The 21st Amendment is expected to annul the 20A to the Constitution, which gives unfettered powers to President Gotabaya Rajapaksa after abolishing the 19th Amendment that will strengthen Parliament. The proposal met with opposition from the loyalists of the Rajapaksa family, particularly from the sup-

porters of Basil Rajapaksa, the former finance minister. Basil Rajapaksa, the younger brother of President Gotabaya Rajapaksa and former prime minister Mahinda Rajapaksa, is a dual American and Sri Lankan citizen and the 21A seeks to bar dual citizens from holding any top public office. At the meeting held on Monday evening, President Gotabaya Rajapaksa told ruling Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) parliamentarians that he was fully backing the 21A. Some parliamentarians, who are believed to be Basil Rajapaksa’s support-

ers, told Wickremesinghe that granting economic relief to people in the worstever economic crisis was more important than constitutional reforms, according to sources. H owe ve r, a n o t h e r group of MPs had felt that constitutional reforms too were necessary for the government’s bid to win international support to tackle the economic crisis. Wickremesinghe was appointed Sri Lanka’s prime minister by President Gotabaya Rajapaksa after the resignation of his elder brother Mahinda Rajapaksa. Wickremesinghe told the ruling coalition parliamentarians that they were free to talk to him on the clarification over the 21st Amendment. With the current economic crisis snowballing into a political crisis in April, over 50 parliamentarians of the ruling SLPP coalition broke ranks to remain independent.

Boris Johnson

LONDON, JUN 1 (PTI): British Prime Minister Boris Johnson has been forced to explain, by his own independent ethics adviser, why he believed that the partygate fine issued to him by Scotland Yard did not breach the country’s Ministerial Code. Lord Christopher Geidt, who reports directly to the Prime Minister in an advisory capacity, said in an annual report on ministerial interests released on Tuesday that a “legitimate question” has arisen as to the fixed penalty notice issued by the Metropolitan Police over a COVID lockdownbreaching birthday party at the Downing Street in June 2020. The report notes that Johnson must set out his “case in public”.

“I did not consider that the circumstances in which I received a fixed-penalty notice were contrary to the regulations,” Johnson said in a letter of explanation to Geidt, which has been made public. “I have accepted the outcome and paid it in compliance with legal requirements. Paying a fixed-penalty notice is not a criminal conviction,” he said. Geidt was also critical in his report about having repeatedly counselled the Prime Minister’s advisers that he must offer a public comment on his obligations under “his own” Ministerial Code, a breach of which usually leads to a minister’s resignation. “That advice has not been heeded and, in relation to the allegations about unlawful gatherings in the Downing Street, the Prime Minister has made not a single public reference to the Ministerial Code,” said the ethics adviser, who, according to “The Times”, was on the verge of resigning over the issue.

A medical rescue team is ready to set out in Chengdu, southwest China’s Sichuan Province, June 1, 2022.

BEIJING/CHENGDU, JUN 1 (PTI): Four people were killed and 14 others injured after a powerful earthquake of 6.1-magnitude jolted the city of Ya’an in southwest China’s Sichuan province on Wednesday afternoon, according to the city’s earthquake relief headquarters. The quake rattled Lushan County of Ya’an in Sichuan at 5:00 pm local time, according to the China Earthquake Networks Centre (CENC). The epicentre, with a depth of 17 km, was monitored at 30.4 degrees north latitude and 102.9

degrees east longitude, the CENC said. Sichuan province suffered China’s deadliest 7.9-magnitude earthquake in 2008 in which 90,000 people were killed Wednesday’s earthquake was followed by another 4.5-magnitude jolt in Baoxing County, also under the city of Ya’an. Four people were killed and 14 others injured in the quake, the state-run People’s Daily reported. All the casualties were reported from Baoxing County, the state-run Xinhua news agency reported,

quoting Ya’an city’s earthquake relief headquarters. Ya’an has activated the second-highest level of emergency response for the earthquake and is conducting damage assessments. More than 800 personnel from emergency rescue, the armed police, the fire department, the medical sector and the public security bureau were immediately dispatched to the earthquakehit areas to search for and rescue the injured, repair roads and relocate affected residents. The Ministry of Emergency Management said an A level-III national emergency response has been activated to conduct the relief operations. A work team has been dispatched to guide and assist the local emergency rescue efforts, the ministry said. Local firefighters have reached the epicentre, while quake rescue teams of Sichuan and other neighbouring regions are on standby for relief operations, the ministry added.

Krishnakumar Kunnath, popularly known as ‘KK’ during his performance, at Nazrul Mancha in Kolkata, Tuesday. (PTI)

PM Modi mourns

Prime Minister Narendra Modi led the vast number of people who condoled the death of popular singer KK at the age of 53 after a concert in Kolkata on Tuesday evening. “Saddened by the u n t i m e ly d e m i s e o f n o t e d singer Krishnakumar Kunnath, popularly known as KK,” Modi tweeted. “His songs reflected a wide range of emotions that struck a chord with people of all age groups. My deepest condolences to his family and fans. Om Shanti Shanti.” Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla spoke for KK’s countless fans when he tweeted: “His soulful voice gave life to songs in every genre.”

Preliminary PM report states cause of death ‘normal’

The preliminary postmor tem re por t of popular playback singer Krishnakumar Kunnath (KK), who died on late Tuesday evening in the city, after a stage performance, has cited the cause of death to be “normal”, without any trace of foul play. H oweve r, t h e d e t a i l e d post-mor tem re por t, along with chemical analysis, will be available only after 72 hours, said sources in Kolkata Police, which received the preliminary post mortem report on late Wednesday afternoon from the state-run SSKM Medical College & Hospital, where a team of doctors conducted the autopsy. According to the preliminary post-mortem report, following the contracted arteries, it can be assumed that the cause of death was massive myocardial infarction. However, the exact cause of death can be ascertained only after the final report is available. On Tuesday after completing his stage performance at Nazrul Mach in south Kolkata, KK returned to his hotel in central

Kolkata. After retur ning to the hotel, he vomited and became seriously sick. He was immediately rushed to a local hospital where he was declared as “brought dead.” Now, here the question is being raised by a section of the city- based physicians on why KK was not rushed to the hospital directly from Nazrul Manch, especially after he complained of uneasiness while performing at the dais there. During the show, KK asked for switching off the high-voltage spotlights and also took a rest for some time in between going backstage. Questions are also being raised about the mismanagement in crowd handling at Nazrul Manch on Tuesday evening, where over crowd of double the capacity of the venue entered, that might have created suffocation. Already a political slugfest has started over this issue. KK came to Kolkata on Monday and on the same day, he performed at the same Nazrul Manch for another city college.

BTS speaks with President Joe Biden about anti-Asian hate crimes

In total, over a quartermillion people tuned in to see the band speak on the White House’s YouTube livestream. Amid last year’s spike of anti-Asian hate crimes in the US, BTS spoke out about their own experience with discrimination via Twitter saying: “We cannot put into words the pain of becoming the subject of hatred and violence for such a reason. Our ow n e x p e r i e n c e s a r e inconsequential compared to the events that have occurred over the past few weeks. But these experiences were enough to make us feel powerless and chip away our selfesteem.” In May of 2021, Biden signed a bipartisan bill geared at addressing the rise in anti-Asian hate crimes into law in May 2021. The bill was introduced to aid the reporting of hate crimes, making them more easily accessible at the local and state levels by boosting public outreach. As a part of this year’s AANHPI Heritage Month, Biden issued a proclamation late last month about the contributions of Asian Americans, Native Hawaiians, and Pacific Islanders to the country’s history and culture. He and Vice President Kamala Harris - who is half Indian - also hosted a White House reception earlier in the month that included US Trade Representative Katherine Tai. Two days later, the White House lauded the passage of legislation to establish a commission to study the possible creation of a National Museum of Asian Pacific American History and Culture. In recent months the President has welcomed several perfor mers, including Olivia Rodrigo and the Jonas Brothers, to the White House, most often as part of vaccination efforts. (IANS)

WBO asks Charlo to defend super Pak start new IWC campaign with win over SL welterweight crown against Tszyu

KARACHI, JUN 1 (IANS): Pakistan begun their ICC Women’s Championship campaign on a high with an eight-wicket win against Sri Lanka in the first ODI of the three-match series at the Southend Cricket Club Stadium here on Wednesday. For Pakistan, Ghulam Fatima was the star in the match, returning with impressive figures of 4 for 21 from her 10-over spell. Sri Lanka looked pale from the very start as they struggled to put up runs on the board. A horrible mix-up in the fourth over resulted in the wicket of Hasini Perera, and though their captain Chamari Athapaththu managed to play some beautiful shots, she too perished before the end of the 15th over.

Pakistan women cricket players celebrate. A third wicket followed soon after as the visitors slipped to 46/3. It is then that Nilakshi de Silva and Prasadani Weerakkody took on the task of rebuilding. The duo made slow progress, but their efforts ensured

the Lankans did not lose further wickets. Steadily they rebuilt the innings, pushing the score towards 100. However, soon after their half-century stand in the 30th over, Pakistan struck back. It was all down-

hill from there for Sri Lanka as the hosts picked up three quick wickets in the space of four deliveries. If not for Kavisha Dilhari’s resilient 49*, the visitors would have been in a more troublesome state. With Pakistan keeping things tight at the other end, Sri Lanka were bowled out for a sub-par 169 in the 48th over. Ghulam Fatima picked up four wickets, while Fatima Sana and Sadia Iqbal claimed two each. Pakistan were cautious at the beginning of their chase of 170. Achini Kulasuriya provided the first breakthrough for Sri Lanka, dismissing opener Muneeba Ali for 14 in the eighth over. U n f o r t u n a t e ly f o r the visitors, that was the only scalp they managed to

get. Bismah arrived at the crease and, along with Sidra Ameen, got the hosts going. Both batters controlled the innings superbly. They knew when to slow down and when to accelerate, and Pakistan chipped away at the low total. The duo was rarely troubled as Sri Lanka failed to create any chances. The visitors’ woes in the field also meant that Pakistan took advantage of misfields. The batters brought up their respective half-centuries. With two runs needed to win, Sidra chopped one onto the stumps to fall for 76. But her massive 143-run stand with Bismah (62 not out) ensured that Pakistan secured a comfortable eightwicket win in the 42nd over.

Both camps have been given 20 days to reach an agreement before the WBO orders a purse bid. “The WBO World Championship Committee hereby orders the ... commencement of negotiations for the above-mentioned WBO Jr. middleweight mandatory championship contest,” the governing body said in a statement on Tuesday.

Tim Tszyu and Jermell Charlo. American Charlo, who also holds the WBC, IBF and WBA belts, became the undisputed champion when he knocked out Brian Castano two weeks ago, while Tszyu beat Terrell Gausha by unanimous decision in his last fight in March.

JA K A RTA , J U N 1 (IANS): Korea dashed Malaysia’s hopes of a maiden Hero Asia Cup trophy as they reigned supreme with a thrilling 2-1 final victory here at the GBK Sports Arena on Wednesday. This is the fifth time the Korean side have lifted the prestigious trophy. They have won the title in 1994, 1999, 2009 and 2013. Having won the Hero Asian Champions Trophy in December last year, Korea looked like a confident bunch going into the final, a place they earned by pipping India in a 3-3 draw on Tuesday. The team, with experienced players, recovered well in time to put up a grand fight against the Malaysian unit who looked poised to win the title race, not having lost a single match in the tournament. After a goalless first quarter, Korea put Malaysia under the pump with a splendid field goal in the 17th minute. LO N D O N, J U N 1 (IANS): Paul Pogba will leave Manchester United when his contract expires at the end of the month, the Premier League club have announced on Wednesday. “Everyone at the club would like to congratulate Paul on his successful career, and thank him for his contributions to Manchester United,” the club said at the start of a lengthy send-off statement on the club website. “We wish him all the best for the next steps on a remarkable journey.” Pogba scored 39 goals in 233 first-team appearances for United, who he first joined from French club Le Havre in 2009. The 29-year-old - a World Cup winner with France in 2018 - is now leaving United on a free transfer for the second occasion, with a return to Juve potentially on the cards. Paris St Germain, Real Madrid, Barcelona and Manchester City are other clubs to have been linked with him in recent months. The Old Trafford

Paul Pogba academy graduate Pogba joined Juventus as a free agent in 2012, only to return four years later for a then world-record fee of 105 million (89 million). The Frenchman has enjoyed a long association with United, having joined the club’s Academy from Le Havre at the age of just 16. Pogba quickly progressed through the ranks, first impressing in the Under-18 and then

swiftly moving upwards to the Reserves. Spain’s Rafael Nadal shakes hands with Serbia’s Novak Djokovic after winning their quarter final match. (Reuters) PARIS, JUN 1 (AGENCIES): Talks of an end to Rafael Nadal’s reign proved premature once again as the claycourt king stayed on course for a record-extending men’s 22nd Grand Slam title by beating arch rival Novak Djokovic 6-2 4-6 6-2 7-6(4) in a vintage French Open quarterfinal clash on Tuesday. The 13-time Roland Garros champion, beaten by the world number one in the semi-finals here last year, arrived in Paris on the back of two injuries that had hampered his preparations. Having already sur-

vived a five-set thriller against Felix Auger Aliassime in the previous round, the Spaniard, who has only lost three times at the French Open since his first campaign in 2005, knows every inch of the immense court Philippe Chatrier and Djokovic paid for the reminder. The Serbian is still stuck at 20 Grand Slam titles after being barred from taking part in the Australian Open by local authorities over his refusal to get vaccinated against COVID-19 - a major that Nadal won. On the day teenager

Carlos Alcaraz, who has been widely tipped as his successor, was knocked out, Nadal threw the punches and had defending champion Djokovic on the ropes in a high octane start under the spotlights. Djokovic fought back in an 88-minute second set but the 35-year-old Nadal, backed by a partisan crowd, found the resources to end it in four sets despite being a break down in the fourth and set up a meeting with German third seed Alexander Zverev for a place in Sunday’s final. Zverev beat Alcaraz in four sets earlier.

World No.1 Iga Swiatek’s unbeaten run extended to 33 straight matches with a victory over No.11 seed Jessica Pegula in the quarterfinals of the French Open here on Wednesday. The 21-year-old Swiatek moved into the French Open semifinals for the second time in her career with a 6-3, 6-2 victory over American Jessica Pegula in Paris. Swiatek’s win also puts her in sole possession of third in the list of longest WTA winning streaks this century; she shared 32 with Justine Henin’s effort between 2007-08. Swiatek was tested by Pegula in the 89-minute quarterfinal. The pair traded serviced breaks to start the match, and the American saved three match points

in the second set before succumbing to defeat. In between, though, Swiatek won seven of eight games played to lead 6-3, 4-1. Swiatek totaled 30 winners to 28 unforced errors and broke Pegula five times on her 11 chances. Standing between 2020 champion Swiatek and a second appearance in the championship match in Paris is No.20 seed Daria Kasatkina, who was victorious over Veronika Kudermetova to start the day. Swiatek leads their overall head-tohead, 3-1, with all three of those wins coming this year. In six sets played between the two on hard courts this year at the Australian Open, Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships and Qatar Total Open, Swiatek lost 11 games combined.

LO N D O N, J U N 1 (AGENCIES): Manchester City’s Phil Foden has been nominated for the Professional Footballers’ Association men’s young player of the year award. The 22-year-old, who won last season’s PFA young player award, is joined by Arsenal pair Bukayo Saka and Emile Smith Rowe in an all-English line-up. Chelsea midfielder Conor Gallagher, defender Reece James from Chelsea and Aston Villa midfielder Jacob Ramsey complete the shortlist. The winner will be revealed on 9 June. Despite missing the first month of the season with an injury he picked up with England at Euro 2020, Foden registered nine goals and five assists for Pep Guardiola’s Premier League-winning side. With 11 goals, Saka was Arsenal’s top scorer in the Premier League this season and also provided the joint-highest number of assists for them - tying with Alexandre Lacazette on seven. Meanwhile, Saka’s team-mate Emile Smith Rowe, who won his first England caps this season, was second on the Gunners’ league goalscoring list with 10. Gallagher, who has

Phil Foden just completed a season’s loan at Crystal Palace from Chelsea, scored eight goals for Patrick Vieira’s side and made his England debut in November. Chelsea defender James completes a family double with his nomination - as sister is on the women’s young player shortlist. He scored five goals and provided nine assists this season, while offering

defensive solidity in a side who conceded fewer goals in this season’s Premier League than every other side bar Manchester City and Liverpool. Aston Villa’s Ramsey has flourished under the management of Steven Gerrard and established himself as a first-team regular this season, picking up the club’s players’ player of the season award.
