Too many cooks for solution
Spl. Correspondent
NEW DELHI, JUN 19 (NPN): With Government of India renewing its efforts to resolve the vexed Naga political issue, highly placed sources confided to this Correspondent that there were impediments which have placed “hurdles” against arriving at an early solution. These sources disclosed that the government of India has belatedly realised that years of going through the motion of consultations and negotiations without any tangible prospect for solution, was a lose-lose situation for both the Centre and the Naga people. Having realised this, the union home ministry has refused to be made as the eventual scapegoat and blamed for delay in solution by allowing the Nagaland government to have an extended free run as facilitator. Sources disclosed that the home ministry held the
view, that the series of consultative meetings convened by the state government over the years, with various Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) had little relevance for “early political solution.” The sources said the Centre has noted that the Nagaland government especially all legislators’ fora and the latest being Core Committee on Naga Political Issue (CCoNPI) have not achieved any breakthrough in having the NSCN(I-M) on board. The sources said, other than repeating and resolving on the same resolutions the government committees have consistently used the self-acclaimed role of “facilitator” as a red herring. Nagaland BJP leaders - minister H&TE Temjen Imna Along and deputy chief minister Y. Patton-have dared to call a spade a spade in revealing the stand of the Centre over demands for flag and constitution.
The BJP leaders have asked the state government both within the assembly and outside, to tell the truth to Nagas about what has been stalling solution as the UDA government’s core committee continues to parrot the appeal on all Naga groups to “resume peace talks” and not to set preconditions. The buzz around the corridors of North Block is that the Ministry of Home Affairs is no longer interested to listen to the same tune over and over again. This was evident in the recent meetings held between union home minister Amit Shah and official delegation from Nagaland led by chief minister Neiphiu Rio, UDA chairman T.R. Zeliang; deputy chief minister Y. Patton and UDA co-chairman Kuzholuzo (Azo) Neinu. In the meetings, sources said union home minister Amit Shah made no mention of the Naga political
issue but raised developmental issues with the Nagaland delegation. Adding to the state government’s discomfiture, the union home ministry has roped in Assam BJP chief minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma and convenor of BJPled North East Democratic Alliance (NEDA), to act as liaison between the Centre and the state. Some legislators from Nagaland told this Correspondent, that involvement of Himanta with the Naga issue appeared to be another signal that the Centre is sending to Rio and Co that its (BJP) North East trouble shooter will be around. Meanwhile, Centre’s representative for Naga political talks, AK Mishra recently held separate meetings with various Manipur and Arunachal Pradeshbased civil society organizations in Imphal and Guwahati.

Good steps taken by govt get caught in colour of politics: PM NEW DELHI, JUN 19 (PTI): It is the country’s “misfortune” that many good things brought with good intentions get trapped in politics, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on Sunday, as he cited development work undertaken by his government. M o d i ’s c o m m e n t s about “good things brought with good intentions” getting trapped in politics also come at a time when his government’s Agnipath scheme, a radical overhaul of the process of soldiers’ recruitment in the armed forces, has triggered protests in different parts of the country. Without mentioning the stir, Modi, during his speech after the inauguration of the Pragati Maidan main tunnel, said “it is the misfortune of our country that many good things, things done with good purpose, get caught in the color of

politics”. Modi cited a number of initiatives, including Eastern and Western Peripheral Expressways, more than doubling of metro tracks in Delhi-NCR and the DelhiMeerut highway among other projects, as steps taken by his government to solve the region’s problems. “It is our country’s misfortune that many good things brought with good intentions get trapped in political colours. Media also gets dragged into it due to its TRP compulsions,” Modi said, adding that the construction of the Central
Vista project and the new Parliament building is going on at a fast pace now. “India’s capital will be talked about in the coming days and every Indian will be proud,” he said. Modi was referring to last year’s inauguration of the defence complex, which he noted earlier operated out of dilapidated hutments spread across a vast stretch of land near Rashtrapati Bhavan. The central vista project, a massive revamp exercise in the heart of India’s seat of power, had drawn protests from a section of activists and opposition parties that went to court. The Pragati Maidan Integrated Transit Corridor had also faced some protests. Even as the Opposition parties are demanding the roll back of Agnipath scheme, the ruling BJP has been strongly defending it.

that all recruitment will be through the Agnipath scheme only. Lt Gen Puri was addressing a joint military briefing on the Agnipath recruitment scheme with Air Marshal SK Jha, Vice Admiral Dinesh Tripathi, and LG C Bansi Ponnappa. He also stated that the Agniveers would get the
same allowance in areas like Siachen and other areas which are applicable to the regular soldiers serving at present. “No discrimination against them in service conditions,” he added. “Coming to the rollback of the scheme. Why should it be rolled back? It is the only progressive step to making the country young. Why is it being made young? We are tinkering with Desh ki Raksha (national security). There is no space. I will give you an example. Do you know how many casualties are reported just for health purposes from high-altitude areas? Do read about it, then you would
come to know why being (sic) young is important,” the officer said. Calling this reform ‘long-pending’, Lt Gen Puri said, “We want a mix of josh and hosh and that is why we wanted to reduce the age profile. The average age is 32 years at present and we want to reduce it as per the recommendations of the Kargil review committee and Arun Singh committee report,” Lt Gen Puri said. Referring to the provisions of reservations in different ministries, Lt Gen Puri said that announcements were pre-planned and not in reaction to the arson and agitation which took
place after the Agnipath scheme announcement. He also clarified that all recruitment will be through the Agnipath scheme only. He said around 17,600 people from the three services are taking premature retirement from the three services every year. “No one ever tried to ask them what they will do after retirement,” he stated. No space for arson, vandalism in military: On the protests and acts of violence happening across the country, Lt General Puri said, “Indian Army’s foundation is discipline. No space for arson, vandalism.
stir from today; Tuensang bandh on June 21
DIMAPUR, JUN 19 (NPN): Chang Wedoshi Setshang (CWS) or Chang Students’ Conference has announced that it would continue with the indefinite agitation over relocation of District Institute for Education and Training (DIET) in Tuensang district. Informing this in a press release, Chang Wedoshi Setshang president C Pongsu and general secretary Ebou Naset said that the apex student body of the Chang community would begin its third phase (Cont’d on p-8) of agitation from June 20
whereby a programme would be held at Tower Clock, Tuensang town at 9 a.m., followed by staging of protest outside the residences of the elected members from 10 to 12 noon. Thereafter, entire business establishments would be forced to shut down completely from 1 p.m. On June 21, the student body said it would impose total bandh in Tuensang town from 8 a.m. till the government fulfilled its demand. CWS said that the first
phase of agitation began on June 13 and the second phase from June 15. Chang Wedoshi Setshang expressed regret that the State government had turned deaf ears towards the issue. Further, claiming that this was not the first time that Tuensang district had suffered or was suffering to obtain due rights since the creation of Nagaland, the CWS said that it would not remain silent over the matter of deprivation regarding developmental opportunities of the district.
NLSF calls for speedy redressal of NASSA issue Groups call for Bharat Bandh today against DIMAPUR, JUN 19 (NPN): As the Nagaland Assembly Secretariat Staff Association (NASSA) has been protesting against the reappointment of Dr. PJ Antony as the principal secretary and arbitrary framing of certain provisions in the service rules, Nagaland Law Students’ Federation (NLSF) expressed dismay for conferring benefits on the retired officer at the cost of several regular employees. NLSF demanded that justice should not only be done but should manifestly and undoubtedly be seen to be done as, in a vibrant, vigilant and vigorous de-
mocracy, there was no place for such miscarriage of justice. The federation therefore appealed to the authorities concerned for speedy redressal of the issue in hand in the larger interest of NLA secretarial staff in particular and the State in general. In a press note, NLSF said that creation/upgradation of the post in the State Assembly (NLA) Secretariat was devoid of reasonableness and a mere representation of undue anomalies, which had adversely misplaced regular serving employees of the department.
NLSF said the unwarranted accommodation of incumbent principal secretary was setting a bad precedent, adding that reasonable promotional opportunities should be available in every wing of public service. While stating that the right to be considered for promotion was a fundamental right, it alleged that this very right of the serving employees under the concerned establishment was being strangled at the cost of accommodating the incumbent principal secretary. In the backdrop of facts, NLSF noted that the
principal secretary was first brought on deputation for a period of five months to the post of secretary because of the indispensable situation which was “sine qua non” at that point of time. But the federation said it was unable to comprehend the unreasonable approach of upgrading the post of secretary to the post of commissioner & secretary, which was made personnel, when the regular serving cadre had already fulfilled the eligibility criteria to head the administration and there was no further need to accommodate extraneous arrangement.
‘Agnipath’ scheme; several states on high alert
NEW DELHI, JUN 19 (AGENCIES): As protests rage throughout the country, with rather lesser reported incidents on Sunday against the newly rolled out Agnipath recruitment scheme, several protestant groups have called for a Bharat Bandh on 20 June. Several states on Sunday tightened security in view of the reported call. Haryana: Authorities will be deploying over 2,000 policemen across several pockets around Faridabad to ensure law and order in the city. As many as 12 police (Cont’d on p-8) blocks have been put up, and
videography will be done to keep an eye on anti-social elements. Kerala: State police chief has said the entire force will be on duty to arrest anyone engaging in violence or destruction of public property. NSU announces ‘blanket ban’ on illegal timber operation, hunting
Sets June 30 deadline for village authority, loggers to end illegal activities
DIMAPUR, JUN 19 (NPN): Nkio Students’ Union (NSU) has announced a “blanket ban” on illegal timber operations and hunting of wildlife, especially for commercial purpose, within its territorial jurisdiction and set a deadline of June 30, 2022 for village authority and loggers to end all illegal activities in this regard. Pursuance to its memo-
randum to Peren divisional forest officer (DFO) on May 19 this year and the DFO’s subsequent reply on May 28, the union in a recent meeting resolved to strictly prohibit the illegal extraction of timber, which had been practised for long within its territory. According to NSU, the DFO in his reply had explicitly stated that there was no record of any person seeking permission for installation of sawmill nor at no point of time did it issue permit to anyone and that there was A saw-mill set up in the area. (Pics by NSU) no provision in Nagaland Tree Felling Regulation, Further, he had replied Nkio village, while the one 2017 for setting up a sawmill that there was no valid work- old working scheme in the in the name of a tree farm. ing scheme in operation at name Old Nkio Working
Scheme that was operational till 2018 had expired and no further extension had been issued from this office. Also, there was no valid tree farm in Nkio jurisdiction at present and the only tree farm that was registered in 2019 in the name of Cheulak had expired and no further extension of tree farm nor permission for felling was given after that. “The present status of the tree farm under Nkio village jurisdiction is nil and an update of the tree farm for verification and mapping is done. There is no question of tree harvesting to be done in Nkio village as there is no tree farm in existence since
2019-20,” the DFO had explicitly clarified. Therefore, in light of the aforementioned facts provided by the Forest Department, NSU said it was clear that every timber operation carried out under Nkio jurisdiction was undisputedly illegal. It appealed to all illegal timber operators to abstain from playing underhand activities by establishing or sending man force (labourers), animal draughts, heavy types of machinery like heavy-duty lorry, excavators, saw machines, etc, to Nkio to continue interdict activities and robe the invaluable natural resources.

Jharkhand: Police have also been put on high alert in Jharkhand while schools will remain shut on Monday in view of the bandh called over the Agnipath recruitment scheme, officials said. The ongoing exams of classes 9 and 11 have also been postponed.

Slight improvement in Tripura flood situation
The flood situation in Tripura improved marginally on Sunday with no fresh spell of heavy rainfall, even as one person was feared washed away in the gushing waters of river Katakhal, an official said. The water level of river Haora, which had crossed the danger mark of 10.80 metres, inundating low-
lying areas of Agartala Municipal Corporation and its neighbourhood on Saturday, is now flowing below the warning limit (9.02 metres), he said. Meanwhile, a person identified as Siraj Miah of Maylakhola under Sadar sub-division was reportedly washed away in the overflowing Katakhal river, a tributary of Haora, said the official of the State Disaster Management Authority (SDMA). “His body is yet to be recovered,” the official said. Around 12,000 people have been rendered homeless due to the flash floods caused by Friday’s torrential rain in three districts, West Tripura, Unakoti and North Tripura, he said, adding, 45 relief camps have been set up. In Sadar sub-division alone, over 11,000 people have been forced to take shelter in 42 camps, the SDMA official said. of the opposition to make issue out of no issue and instigate people to protest. He said, “It is the duty of the opposition to oppose any move of the government.” “No one will be forced to join the scheme. There is no reason for agitating
against the scheme. Those who want, they can join and those who don’t want, they can skip,” he added. Singh then alleged that those who were taking part in the protests and agitations did not know what the scheme was all about. The chief minister was responding to queries from reporters on the sideline of a roadshow of E-rickshaw flagging off function in Imphal. Singh flagged off the roadshow organized by ERickshaw Workers’ Union Manipur from Imphal’s Western gate of Kangla fort. The objective of the roadshow was to make Imphal City free from hazardous emission, particulate matter, and all forms of pollutants and mitigate climate change and global warming, according to the organizers.
Speaking after flagging off the roadshow, the chief minister highlighted the importance of the programme and emphasized that mitigating climate change and global warming was the need of the hour. He stressed on the need for voluntary involvement of everyone in conserving the environment by planting trees and using e-vehicles, among others. He said that many people in the state had started using e-vehicles to control air and noise pollution and assured that the government would provide every possible support to e-rickshaw workers. Agniveers as security guards, drivers: BJP leaders
NEW DELHI, JUN 19 (AGENCIES/PTI): Amid, nationwide protests against the ‘Agnipath’ scheme for the armed forces, senior BJP leader Kailash Vijayvargiya on Sunday said he would prefer recruiting ‘Agniveers’ as security guards at the party office, reports Times Now. Talking to reporters, the BJP leader said discipline and following orders are important parts of the armed forces. “Suppose ‘Agniveer’ joins the armed forces at the age of 21 then he will still be 25 by the time he leaves the forces. He will have Rs. 11 lakh cash in his hand and will proudly flaunt the ‘Agniveer’ medal on his chest. If I have to hire someone for the security for the BJP office here, I will give a preference to him,” the senior BJP leader said. After his statement went viral, the BJP leader in a tweet blamed the “toolkit gang” for twisting and dis-

torting his remarks. People associated with the toolkit are trying to insult the ‘Agniveer’ by distorting my statement and the nation is well aware of the conspiracies hatched by them, he added. Reacting to his statement, Shiv Sena leader Priyanka Chaturvedi said “our armed forces will also train for Agniveers to become security guards. This is trivialising the importance of our men in uniform.” Earlier, Union Minister G Kishan Reddy had reportedly said that those who
will be recruited under the scheme will be trained with the skills of drivers, electricians, barbers and other professionals. H i s r e m a r k i nv i t ed sharp reactions with AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi saying that serving in the army is a prestigious profession with no parallel. “These men are willing to kill or get killed for India. If they wanted to be drivers, etc why would they spend 4 years in the army? It’s clear that BJP sees ‘Agniveers’ as nothing but chowkidaars on hire,” Owaisi tweeted.
The Congress on Sunday took a dig at the BJP over its leader Kailash Vijayvargiya’s remarks suggesting that he will give priority to ‘agniveers’ for security jobs at his party’s office, saying now “we know” what the BJP really meant when it launched the ‘Main Bhi Chowkidaar’ campaign in 2019. Amid protests over the Agnipath scheme for recruitment into the armed forces, BJP general secretary Vijayvargiya said if he has to hire the services of professionals to arrange security at the party office, he would give priority to those who have served as Agniveer soldiers. Tagging the screenshot of a media report on Vijayvargiya’s remarks, Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh said, “Now we know what the BJP really meant when they launched the
campaign in 2019, ‘Main Bhi Chowkidaar’...” On its officical Twitter handle, the Madhya Congress said, “BJP general secretary insulting soldiers. Agniveer will become a watchman outside the BJP office. Mr. Modi, this was the mentality we were afraid of - shameless government.” Earlier, in another tweet, Ramesh took a dig at Prime Minister Narendra Modi over the Agnipath scheme, posting five mantras of ‘Modi path’. He said the angr y farmers and angry soldiers had become India’s new identity. Ramesh also said the government first announces a measure and then gets into a huddle to resolve issues arising out of it. He also accused the government of selling the country’s prized possessions.
Understand our frustration: Army job aspirants in Bihar
PATNA, JUN 19 (PTI): Angry job aspirants, who have hit the streets in Bihar to protest against the Centre’s newly introduced ‘Agnipath’ scheme, said their dreams of joining the armed forces have been shattered with the announcement of the short-term contractual recruitment programme and urged the government to realise why job seekers are frustrated with it. The Centre must understand the pain that the unemployed youths of the country are going through, said Vikas Ranjan, one of the hundreds of job aspirants who have been demonstrating against the scheme. Ranjan, a graduate of Patna College, also alleged that the short-term contractual employment programme is “nothing but a design to destroy permanent jobs in the armed forces”. “When Prime Minister Narendra Modi talks about ‘Atma Nirbhar Bharat’ (self
reliant India), will this Agnipath help army job aspirants to become self-reliant? Protests are taking place not only in Bihar but almost in all states of the country,” Ranjan, who has been preparing for the competitive exams for the last seven months, told PTI. The government had on June 14 unveiled the “transformative” scheme --’Agnipath’-- for the recruitment of soldiers in the Army, Navy and the Air Force largely on a four-year contractual basis, in a major overhaul of the decades-old selection process to bring in fitter and younger troops to deal with future security challenges facing the nation. It also said the programme would allow “patriotic and motivated” youths to serve in the armed forces for four years. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh had on Tuesday said this scheme has been brought to strengthen the security of the country.
Don’t celebrate my birthday: Rahul to party workers NEW DELHI, JUNE 19 (IANS): Former Congress President Rahul Gandhi, who turned 52 on Sunday, has asked his supporters to refrain from celebrating his birthday as the youth are “sad”. The appeal comes in backdrop of wide protest against the Centre’s “Agnipath” scheme for the recruitment in the Armed Forces. In an appeal, he said, “I appeal to all Congress workers and my well wishers across the country not to hold any kind of celebrations on the occasion of my birthday.” Rahul Gandhi, born on June 19, 1970, is in his fourth term as Lok Sabha MP -- thrice from Amethi (2004 ,2009 and 2014) and currently from Wayanad. He lost from Amethi in 2019. The Congress on Sunday will hold a “Satyagrah” against the Agnipath scheme at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi.
If you don’t like ‘Agnipath’ scheme Congress holds Satyagraha against Agnipath in New Delhi don’t join armed forces: V K Singh
V K Singh
Replying to a question over Priyanka Gandhi’s statement made earlier in the day in Delhi that the Agnipath scheme will destroy the youth as well as the army, Singh said, “Congress is upset because Rahul Gandhi is being questioned by the Enforcement Directorate (ED). Hence, the party finds fault with even the best of the best work of the government.” “The Opposition, particularly the Congress, is trying to mislead the youngsters. The only work that the Opposition is left with is to criticise and stop any government schemes. They want to create unrest in the country to defame the government,” he said. The Agnipath scheme, announced on June 14, provides for the recruitment of youths in the age bracket of 17-and-half to 21 years for only four years with a provision to retain 25 per cent of them for 15 more years.
Later, the government extended the upper age limit to 23 years for recruitment in 2022. However, massive protests have erupted in many states, including Bihar and Uttar Pradesh, with youths taking to the streets to express their dissatisfaction with the scheme. Anyone involved in protests, arson and vandalism against the Agnipath scheme would not be allowed to join the three services under the new recruitment model, a senior military official had said on Sunday. Singh said the concept of the ‘Agnipath’ scheme was conceived when the Kargil Committee was formed after the 1999 war. “The primary idea was that a soldier can join the armed forces for a short period....which will solve two things,” he said in an apparent reference to the demand for compulsory military training in India and maintaining the young age profile of the armed forces. Singh said the demand for compulsory military training for the youth and other citizens of India had been made for the last 30 to 40 years. “In the past, it was said that the training can be imparted through the NCC but the demand for military training was always there,” he added.
After ‘destroying’ economy, Modi govt ‘playing’ with national security: Owaisi RANCHI, JUN 19 (PTI): The Narendra Modi government at the Centre is “playing” national security after “destroying” the country’s economy, which led to largescale unemployment, AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi alleged on Sunday. Addressing a rally in support of Independent candidate Dev Kumar Dhan for the Mandar by-election in Jharkhand, Owaisi said the day Congress is “finished”, Modi would lose elections. “The Modi government destroyed the country’s economy in the last eight years. At present, unemployment is a big issue in the country, which as per my calculation is around 16-17 per cent. Now, he is playing with the national security by introducing the Agnipath scheme,” he alleged. “I urge the prime minister to call a special session of Parliament, in which I will expose the government -- how it compromised national security. I assure the youths who are against the Modi government’s policies that I am with them,” he added.
Asaduddin Owaisi
Dhan, for whom Owaisi was campaigning at Charo ground in Chanho block, was recently been expelled from the BJP. He had contested from the Mandar seat on a BJP ticket in 2019 assembly polls, but lost to JVM-P’s Bandhu Tirkey. Dhan decided to contest the bypoll as an Independent after the BJP denied him a ticket. The by-election was necessitated as Tirkey, who later joined Congress, was disqualified following his conviction in a corruption case. Targetting the Congress, Owaisi said, “It is a spent force and behind Modi’s electoral victories. The day Congress is fin-
ished, Modi would also lose elections.” Congress, which is a part of the ruling coalition in Jharkhand, has no power to ensure action against the policemen who are responsible for the killing of two youths during the Ranchi violence, he claimed. Attacking Chief Minister Hemant Soren, the Hyderabad MP said, “I would like to ask why he turned so greedy that he had to acquire 11 acres of land in his name.” Congress has fielded Bandhu Tirkey’s daughter Shilpa Neha Tirkey as the candidate for the JMM-led alliance. The BJP has nominated former legislator Gangotri Kujur from the seat. The by-election was earlier seen as a direct fight between the BJP and the Congress, but the fates of their candidates hang in balance with the entry of Dhan as an Independent. AIMIM candidate Shishir Lakra, who withdrew his name from the by-election, was in the third position during the 2019 assembly polls.

at the youths protesting the Agnipath scheme. In her address, the Congress general secretary also recited a few lines from Harivansh Rai Bachchan’s Hindi poem ‘Agnipath’ to urge the youths to persevere and keep struggling peacefully. “The name of the poem has been given to such a scheme that will destroy the youth. This scheme will destroy the Army. Recognise this government’s intentions.” “In a democratic way and by walking on the path
of truth and non-violence, bring down this government. Your objective should be (to ensure) that such a government is formed in the country which shows real patriotism and takes forward the poor and the youth of the country,” Priyanka Gandhi said. She also appealed to those protesting to not resort to violence. “I want the youth to know that we understand your pain. This is your country and this country’s property is yours. So, it is your
responsibility to protect it. I appeal to you to hold peaceful protests but not stop. It is your duty to protect the country’s democracy. Every leader of the Congress will support you in fulfilling this duty,” she said. The Congress leader alleged that the government is working for big industrialists. “I appeal to you to understand the situations around you (and) what the government is doing. This government is not working for the poor and its people but for big industrialists,” Priyanka Gandhi said. Addressing the gathering, Pilot said if the government wanted to save money then it should not have gone ahead with the Central Vista project and bought two planes, that would have saved thousands of crores. “But they played with the dreams of the youth by bringing Agnipath scheme. It should be taken back. Youths should also not resort to violence but protest peacefully. Our party is with them,” he said. In his remarks, Hooda said that an ‘Agniveer’ in the fourth year will become insecure about his future. What will happen to the security of a country whose soldier is insecure about his future, he asked. Slamming the BJP over its defence of the Agnipath, he said foreign models of the US and Israel won’t work in India. Former Uttarakhan
Chief Minister Harish Rawat said joining Army was a tradition in his state and was not seen just as a means to earn a living. “Every rejiment has a history of valour and you want to destroy that history. We condemn this decision which has been taken without consideration,” he said. Congress chief Sonia Gandhi is being treated at a hospital here for a lower respiratory tract infection and post-Covid symptoms, former Congress president Rahul Gandhi was not present at the Satyagraha. Youths in several parts of the country have been protesting against the contentious defence recruitment scheme. Over the past few days, incidents of protesters vandalising railway stations, setting trains on fire and blocking roads and railway tracks have been reported from different cities and towns. Heavy de ployment of police and paramilitary forces was seen at the protest site. The entry and exit points to Jantar Mantar were blocked.
Rajnath meets chiefs of Army, Navy and IAF roles by June next year, senior military officials said. In an attempt to pacify the protesters, the government on Thursday night increased the upper age limit for recruitment under the ‘Agnipath’ scheme to 23 years from 21 for the year 2022. Unveiling the scheme on Tuesday, the government
said youths between the ages of 17 and-a-half and 21 years would be inducted for a four-year tenure while 25 per cent of them will be subsequently inducted for regular service. T h e yo u t h s t o b e recruited under the new scheme would be called ‘Agniveer’. A major objective of the scheme is to bring down
the average age of military personnel and cut ballooning salary and pension bills. The announcement of the new scheme came in the backdrop of recruitments into the military remaining stalled over the coronavirus pandemic for over two years. The Army recr uits 50,000 to 60,000 soldiers annually.

NEW DELHI, JUN 19 (PTI): Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Sunday met the three service chiefs amid escalating protests against the ‘Agnipath’ military recruitment scheme in several parts of the country. It was Singh’s second meeting with the chiefs of the Army, Navy and the Air Force for the second straight day on the issue. There was no official comment on the meeting. It is learnt that the focus of the deliberations was on pacifying the protesters. As the protests intensified in various parts of the country, the defence minister on Saturday approved a proposal to reserve 10 per cent of the jobs in various
organisations under the ministry for recruits under the ‘Agnipath’ scheme if they meet the requisite eligibility criteria. The Home Ministry also announced 10 per cent reservations for ‘Agniveers’ in Central Armed Police Forces and Assam Rifles following completion of their four-year tenure under the new recruitment scheme. The Indian Air Force on Sunday came out with details of the new scheme. The Indian Navy and the Army are expected to issue similar details soon. The three services are planning to deploy the first batches of recruits under the new scheme both in operational and non-operational

NAGPUR, JUN 19 (PTI): Amid violence over the ‘Agnipath’ scheme, Union minister and former Army chief General V K Singh (retd) on Sunday slammed the protesters saying if they don’t like the new policy for recruitment into the armed forces they shouldn’t opt for it. Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of an event in Maharashtra’s Nagpur city, Singh said the Indian Army doesn’t conscript soldiers and that aspirants can join of their own volition. “Joining the Army is voluntary and not a compulsion. If any aspirant wants to join, he can join as per his will, we don’t conscript soldiers. But if you don’t like this recruitment scheme (‘Agnipath’) then don’t come to (join). Who is asking you to come? You are burning buses and trains. Who told you that you will be recruited into the armed forces. You will be selected only if you fulfil the eligibility criteria,” he said. He also hit out at the Congress over party leader Priyanka Gandhi’s statement against the Agnipath scheme and alleged that the grand old party is finding fault with even the best work of the Modi government as it is upset with Rahul Gandhi’s questioning by the ED.
NEW DELHI, JUN 19 (PTI): Stepping up its attack on the Centre, the Congress on Sunday held a ‘Satyagraha’ here in support of those protesting the government’s Agnipath scheme with party leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra urging the youth to recognise “fake nationalists” and ensure that a new government is formed in the country which shows “real patriotism”. She alleged the new military recruitment scheme would be destructive for the youth and the Army. Several top Congress leaders, including Priyanka Gandhi, AICC general secretary organisation K C Venugopal, party’s leader in Lok Sabha Adir Ranjan Chowdhury, Harish Rawat, Communications department head Jairam Ramesh, Salman Khurshid, Sachin Pilot, Deepender Hooda and Ajay Maken, participated in the ‘Satyagraha’ held at Jantar Mantar here. Congress leaders and supporters criticised the BJP-led Central government and said the Agnipath scheme is not beneficial for the country’s youth and will also jeopardises national security. “There is no bigger patriot than you. I want to tell you, open your eyes and recognise the fake nationalists and fake patriots. The entire country and the Congress are with you in your struggle,” Priyanka Gandhi said in her remarks aimed

Wood and stone politics
P
olitical developments in India throw up sharp contradictions between a hugely potent, effective and motivated ruling and a disarrayed, divided opposition parties who have attacked the government as much as they attack each other. A democracy is not worth the name if the opposition has no vision for the nation but more interested to belittle or denigrate each other in order to accord self-acclaimed national alternative. While India is reeling under the weight of communalism and policies that are only serving the national interests of capitalists; the disparate opposition parties are more interested in trying to trip each other like crabs. The big test for the non-NDA parties is not about setting up a consensus candidate for the president of India but in getting their act together as constitutional watchdog. The NDA will get its man again to the Rashtrapati Bhavan since the little percentage of votes it requires can be obtained from friendly regional parties such as Nabeen Patnaik’s BJD in Odisha, Jaganmohan Reddy’s YSR Congress in Andhra Pradesh and even TRS in Telangana. The Aam Admi Party (AAP) the Johnny come lately of Indian politics, after winning Punjab and now ruling in two states(Delhi, Punjab)has like the TRS, said it won’t sit on the same room where Congress is also sitting; or it won’t be part of any opposition forum where Congress is also part of. All these have only made the BJP the obvious choice for many undecided. Due to kind of petty politics among the opposition, people in India are confused and resentful. Instead of mainstreaming their narrative against the wrong and controversial policies of the Modi government, the opportunistic opposition parties are acting as if each of them on their own, represent the entire opposition. All these have only made odds appear to favour the BJP for the 2024 Lok Sabha polls. BJP can steam roll over the opposition parties anytime and so it is rightfully gung ho about its rosy prospects, as barring a few losses, BJP’s winning streak doesn’t appear to be reversing. In the recent assembly elections, BJP has retained four of the five states that went to the polls recently. It considers its poll victories as an endorsement of the policies and schemes of the Modi Government. On the other hand, the Congress cannot mount a credible challenge in 2024 or even lead the opposition coalition. The Gandhi family has gotten away with so many defeats since 2014 mainly because family drum beaters and sycophants in the Congress make it impossible for any other person outside the family to lead the party. Under the present Gandhi-led Congress many party stalwarts including potential young leaders were compelled to leave the party since they see no future in a family-run and dynastic party. As the only opposition party with pan-India reach, the Congress is still a potent force which can defeat the BJP. However, the Congress appears to be damned since sycophants don’t want any change and have made the Gandhis dance to their tune. Sadly, a party of 137 years history which started the independence movement from British colonial yoke that had political giants and stalwarts at its helm, is today a playground for the Gandhi siblings. All these only ensure that BJP has the advantage of deciding the political narrative.
DailyDevotion The Service of Passionate Devotion
…do you love Me?…Tend My sheep. —John 21:16
Jesus did not say to make converts to your way of thinking, but He said to look after His sheep, to see that they get nourished in the knowledge of Him. We consider what we do in the way of Christian work as service, yet Jesus Christ calls service to be what we are to Him, not what we do for Him. Discipleship is based solely on devotion to Jesus Christ, not on following after a particular belief or doctrine. “If anyone comes to Me and does not hate…, he cannot be My disciple” (Luke 14:26). In this verse, there is no argument and no pressure from Jesus to follow Him; He is simply saying, in effect, “If you want to be My disciple, you must be devoted solely to Me.” A person touched by the Spirit of God suddenly says, “Now I see who Jesus is!”— that is the source of devotion. Today we have substituted doctrinal belief for personal belief, and that is why so many people are devoted to causes and so few are devoted to Jesus Christ. People do not really want to be devoted to Jesus, but only to the cause He started. Jesus Christ is deeply offensive to the educated minds of today, to those who only want Him to be their Friend, and who are unwilling to accept Him in any other way. Our Lord’s primary obedience was to the will of His Father, not to the needs of people— the saving of people was the natural outcome of His obedience to the Father. If I am devoted solely to the cause of humanity, I will soon be exhausted and come to the point where my love will waver and stumble. But if I love Jesus Christ personally and passionately, I can serve humanity, even though people may treat me like a “doormat.” The secret of a disciple’s life is devotion to Jesus Christ, and the characteristic of that life is its seeming insignificance and its meekness. Yet it is like a grain of wheat that “falls into the ground and dies”— it will spring up and change the entire landscape (John 12:24).

Markets tumble with Himalayas ravaging NE, U’Khand
G
igantic Himalayan tragedies rock and destabilise the Indian economy as development becomes fad. The 15.9 percent wholesale inflation, stock sensex crash by 2931points in a week, rupee below 78, prolonged heat wave, low wheat yield, millions of tree felling and blasts for roads are connected saga. The latest least discussed washout of Assam’s New Haflong railway station is a testimony of the magnitude and a tell-tale of India’s future. Affecting of the fragile Himalayas is stated to be the reason for most calamities and severe heating up of the Indian subcontinent and economic woes. An Indo-US Monsoon study linked the Himalayas to formation of cyclones up to South Africa. About 10,000 Himalayan glaciers are receding at a rate of 30 to 60 metres (100 to 200 feet) per decade as temperatures rise with road and dam constructions. Around 10.76 million trees were felled between 2015 and 2018 for development, as per a Rajya Sabha answer. Supreme Court for now stays chopping of 11000 trees in Dehradun. The nation has learnt little from the June 2013 Kedarnath tragedy that wiped out a large chunk of
the Himalayas considered the soul of god – Devtatma killing 6000. The cost of damages is difficult to assess but a sample can be taken from the compensation given to flood hit people in Bihar. For Rs 5-lakh houses Rs 6000 is doled out. Uttarakhand allocates one-third of its annual budget to disaster relief and in 2021 spent additional Rs 7000 crore. Aruanachal’s largest Dibang dam will chop 2.7 lakh more trees. The Haflong washout would not have happened but for the false desire for creating a single-gauge all over. The British time metre gauge track, created for a purpose on the fragile patches, now being preserved for heritage purposes has its old Lower Haflong station intact. The mudslide from nearby hills loosened by blasts engulfed the station, marooning a number of trains, putting about 2500 people at great risk, at least five deaths, blocks a tunnel, and links to TripuraMizoram-Manipur. It is fashionable to discuss about Uttarakhand, but the NorthEast is becoming worse with losing about 1.45 million hectares (Mha) of tree cover between 2001 and 2020, amounting to roughly 76 percent of the country’s total tree cover loss, according to a
global study by the University of Mar yland’s Global Land Analysis & Discovery (GLAD) laboratory released by Global Forest Watch (GFW). It says India as a whole lost 1.93 Mha of tree cover in 2001-20, including Uttarakhand’s 50,000 hectares. Assam has the highest share of the national tree cover loss, 14 percent. From 2001 to 2020, the state lost 269 kilohectare (kha) of tree cover - 9.8 percent decrease. Among other Northeast states, Mizoram lost 247 Shivaji kha, Nagaland 225 kha, Arunachal Pradesh 222 kha, Manipur 196kha, Meghalaya 195 kha and Tripura lost 102 kha tree cover in 20 years, the report said. The top five states in the list with the maximum tree cover loss are in the N-E. The seven sister states are also among the 10 worst performers in terms of tree cover loss. Arunachal with proposed 169 hydropower projects is in throes of protests against construction of mega dams over Brahmaputra and its tributaries. All Assam Students Union that once pleaded for dam on Subansiri in 1985 now opposes it. The protests intensified after June 2008, when excess water was released from
the Ranganadi dam, the first in Arunachal without prior warning to downstream communities. Massive flood submerged large swathes of land, killing at least 10 people and affecting around three lakh. “No-more-dam” movement is popular in Arunachal but resistance weak. So now comes the world’s largest concrete gravity Dibang dam with 2880 MW capacity in a fragile region. It would lead to clearing 1,165 hectares of rare traditionally protected b i o d ive r Sarkar sity forest home to the Idu Mishmi tribe. Hundreds of families in 39 villages of Dibang Valley will be displaced. Sudden glacier meltdowns are probable at dam site. The pattern is almost a repeat at Kedarnath restoration at the insistence of former Uttarkahand chief minister Harish Rawat. Dr D.P. Dobhal, a senior glaciologist of National Institute of Mountaineering, says that the suggestions in their report, in accordance with higher Himalayan geology, were ignored in the new construction. The ministry of environment and forest (MoEF}on December, 2014 filed an affidavit driven by “pain, anguish
and outrage” demanding stoppage of work at 3292 MW seven Uttarakhand hydropower projects, including Tapovan Vishnugad. Seven years later in 2021 it files another saying consensus reached with the power, Jal Shakti ministry and the Uttarakhand government to continue work on these projects. And in Febr uar y, 2021 Tapovan saw flash flood killing 200 in Chamoli. After a study 53 scientists from JNU, and IIT Indore, in June 2021, found that the flood was caused by falling debris, rocks 20 metre in diameter and blocking Nanda Devi glacier leading to 27 million cubic metres of water and debris barreling down the Ronti Gad, Risigana and Dhauliganga river valleys rising 220 metres above the valley flow. This trapped workers and engineers at Tapovan. The rivers are attractive for hydropower projects but little learnt from the Vishnuprayag debacle of 2013 where for kilometres Alkananda has vanished. The floods, landslides and forest fires are becoming frequent in the Himalayas as reckless road, rail and dam constructions, tree felling, blasting and tunneling in the fragile hills cause continuous landslides or loose rock-
falls a regular affair. A Wadia Institute of Himalayan Geology (WIHG) study has found that 51 percent of Uttarakhand is ‘high’ and ‘very high’ landslide-prone. The local aspirations and large moneys often lead to undesirable ends. The recent spate of activities on the higher Himalayas for creating roadrailways to Karnaprayag, and comfort zones for tourism are adding to the problems. Today, most dams have only one-third the capacity of the power generation these were ostensibly built for but during rains the overflows dip the people in woes. None explains the rationale of such projects and why now being repeated in N-E. Another side effect of the projects is 100s of kilometers of embankment constructions following the Tehri dam apprehending calamities. If the cost of these is added to the Tehri, it would be stupendous and exposes the human folly. Policy paradigm has to recognize, National Disaster Management Authority warns, check on construction for protecting the Himalayas. It is key to boosting the sagging Indian economy be it the stocks, commodities or manufacturing.
Post-mortem World Refugee Day 2022
Together we heal, learn, and shine
“Refugees are mothers, fathers, sisters, brothers, children, with the same hopes and ambitions as usexcept that a twist of fate has bound their lives to a global refugee crisis on an unprecedented scale.” - Khaled Hosseini Introduction: Each June 20, the globe comes together to honour World Refugee Day. The United Nations General Assembly launched the holiday in 2000, and since then, the worldwide community has spent the day focused on ways to improve the lives of refugees. Most of us know that refugees are forced to leave their homes due to war, terror, or other crises-but fleeing their home country is often just the beginning of a difficult journey. Many refugees find themselves living in camps until they are resettled-some of which are dangerous or not well-equipped for long term living. Refugees don’t always have a say in which country they are ultimately relocated to, and the bureaucratic process involved in finding their new home can take years. Worldwide refugee crises have taken centre stage in the news in recent years, so it’s more important than ever to share support and to celebrate World Refugee Day. Traumatic Experience of the Refugees: Refugees have experienced many extremely stressful events because of political or religious oppression, war, migration, and resettlement. It is difficult to even define all of the types of events they have suffered, because refugee trauma often precedes the primary war-related event that causes them to flee. Before being forced to flee, refugees may experience imprisonment, torture, loss of property, malnutrition, physical assault, extreme fear, rape and loss of livelihood. The flight process can last days or years. During flight, refugees are frequently separated from family members, robbed, forced to inflict pain or kill, witness torture or killing, and/or lose close family members or friends and endure extremely harsh environmental conditions. Perhaps the most significant effect from all of the experiences refugees endure is having been betrayed, either by their own people, by enemy forces, or by
the politics of their world in general. Having misanthropic actions of others become a major factor controlling the lives of refugees has significant implications for health and for their ability to develop trusting interpersonal relationships, which are critical to resettlement and healing. When refugees resettle to a host country, which is most often in a place that is not of the refugee’s choosing, the refugee must adapt to a new place and language under uncertain circumstances and with uncertain futures. Re-establishing a home and identity, while trying to juggle the tasks of daily living, is yet another significant challenge that the refugee must undertake. Early studies showed that post-migration stress contributed to the poor mental health of refugees. Recent work has verified that post-migration stress significantly influences the emotional well-being of refugees, and often provides a risk similar to or greater than war-related trauma. Pre-and post-migration stress may differentially predict specific kinds of symptoms and distress in both children and adults. This information is important; it is during the period of resettlement where stress is high and the refugee may be reminded of other traumatic events of their lives, when resettlement agencies and health care workers might start to reverse the effects of trauma across the lifespan of the refugee by providing culturally sensitive care that gives the refugee support. World Refugee Day Significance: World Refugee Day is observed to preserve and enhance the lives of refugees across the world, ensuring that they not only survive but also live in dignity. This day is dedicated to highlighting the rights, aspirations, and needs of refugees in order to generate political will so that refugees can not only survive, but also thrive. However, it is more difficult to reinforce and safeguard the lives of refugees on a regular basis, thus World Refugee Day was established to raise awareness about the conditions and difficulties that refugees face in their daily lives. The enormity of the global refugee issue might
be difficult to comprehend, but increasing awareness can help people comprehend the scope of what refugees throughout the world are facing. It also fosters empathy and compassion, which brings individuals from all walks of life together, which is always a good thing. Understanding Refugees Traumatic stress: Traumatic stress is a normal reaction to an abnormal event. Usually, symptoms get better with time, but people with more intense symptoms may need professional help. Over the course of a lifetime, it’s common to be exposed to a traumatic event, whether it is a violent act, a serious injury, a sexual violation, or other shocking event like leaving their homes due to war, terror, or other crises. In response, many will experience traumatic stress-a normal reaction to an abnormal event. People may even experience traumatic stress by just witnessing a highly distressing event or having a close family member or friend experience such an event. In the days and weeks following such a trauma, it’s common for people to have a flurry of unpredictable emotions and physical symptoms. They include: Sadness, Feeling nervous, jumpy, or on high alert, Irritability or anger, Difficulty sleeping, Relationship problems, Intrusive thoughts, flashbacks, or nightmares, Trouble feeling positive emotions, Avoiding people, places, memories, or thoughts associated with the traumatic event. Usually, these symptoms get better with time. But for some people, more intense symptoms linger or interfere with their daily lives and do not go away on their own. Some people may develop acute stress disorder in which they have extreme symptoms of stress that significantly interfere with daily life, school, work or social functioning in the month after a traumatic event. Others can develop posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), with symptoms that interfere with daily life and last for more than a month after the trauma. Coping with traumatic stress: The good news is that there are very effective ways to cope with and treat the stressful effects of trauma. Psychologists and other researchers have found
that these actions can help: 1. Lean on your loved ones. Identify friends or family members for support. If you feel ready to discuss the traumatic event, you might talk to them about your experience and your feelings. You can also ask loved ones to help you with household tasks or other obligations to relieve some of your daily stress. 2. Face your feelings. It’s normal to want to avoid thinking about a traumatic event. But not leaving the house, sleeping all the time, isolating yourself from loved ones, and using substances to escape reminders are not healthy ways to cope over time. Though avoidance is normal, too much of it can prolong your stress and keep you from healing. Gradually, try to ease back into a normal routine. Support from loved ones or a mental health professional can help a lot as you get back in the groove. 3. Prioritize self-care. Do your best to eat nutritious meals, get regular physical activity, and get a good night’s sleep. And seek out other healthy coping strategies such as art, music, meditation, relaxation, and spending time in nature. 4. Be patient. Remember that it’s normal to have a strong reaction to a distressing event. Take things one day at a time as you recover. As the days pass, your symptoms should start to gradually improve. Not everyone requires treatment for traumatic stress. Most people recover on their own with time. However, mental health professionals such as psychologists can help you find healthy ways to cope in the aftermath of a traumatic event. If your distress is interfering with your relationships, work, or daily functioning, you may have acute stress disorder or PTSD. Psychologists can provide evidencebased interventions to help you cope with traumatic stress or acute stress disorder. One is Psychological First Aid (PFA), originally designed to help children, adolescents, adults, and families in the aftermath of a disaster or terrorism. It’s now used to help people who have experienced any type of trauma. PFA is based on the idea that distress is normal after a traumatic event. Rather than treat that stress like a disorder, the focus of this
approach is to provide support and assistance and share information about stress reactions and coping strategies. Mental health providers and disaster response workers provide PFA in the days and weeks after a trauma, in diverse settings including hospitals, housing shelters, community settings, and even over telephone crisis hotlines. The goal of PFA is to reduce distress and improve coping and functioning, both shortterm and long-term. Another evidence-based treatment is cognitive behavioural therapy, or CBT, which is successfully used to treat many psychological disorders, including traumatic stress. CBT is a psychological treatment that helps people learn to change unhelpful thinking and behavioural patterns. The World Health Organization recommends traumafocused CBT to treat symptoms of acute traumatic stress in adults. Some research also suggests that people who receive trauma-focused CBT may be less likely to develop chronic PTSD. In addition, a variety of treatments have been developed to help children and adolescents who have been exposed to trauma or adverse childhood events such as neglect or abuse. Many of these therapies are family-based and include the child’s parents or caregivers in the treatment process. If you or a loved one is struggling to recover from a traumatic event, a psychologist can help. Conclusion: World Refugee Day shines a light on the rights, needs and dreams of refugees, helping to mobilize political will and resources so refugees can not only survive but also thrive. While it is important to protect and improve the lives of refugees every single day, international days like World Refugee Day help to focus global attention on the plight of those fleeing conflict or persecution. Many activities held on World Refugee Day create opportunities to support refugees. “Refugees are not terrorists. They are often the first victims of terrorism.” Rev. Fr. C. Joseph, Counsellor, St. Joseph’s College (Autonomous), Jakhama, Kohima - Nagaland

Delhi-bound flight catches fire soon after taking off from Patna
Delhi-bound SpiceJet flight after making an emergency landing at Patna airport, June 19, 2022
PATNA, JUN 19 (PTI): Passengers on board a Delhi-bound SpiceJet flight from here had a narrow escape when their aircraft caught fire soon after taking off from the city airport on Sunday, and made an emergency landing before hovering for several minutes in the air, an official said. The aircraft made a turnback due to a suspected bird hit, which forced the pilot to shut one of the engines and decide to return to the city airport, the airline said in a statement. The aircraft took off
at around 12.10 pm, and according to residents of localities adjacent to the airport, who claimed to have witnessed the incident, it caught fire immediately. However, none of the passengers were hurt, an official said. Some passengers said they felt tremors inside the plane soon after the take off and the lights started turning off. “We raised an alarm. The crew members asked us to keep calm and informed us that an emergency landing was being made,” a pas-
senger said. Fire engines were deployed at the runway where the emergency landing was made though the flames had, by then, come under control. “On June 19, SpiceJet B737-800 aircraft was operating SG-723 (Patna-Delhi). On take-off, during rotation, the cockpit crew suspected a bird hit on Engine #. As a precautionary measure and as per SOP, Captain shutdown the affected engine and decided to return to Patna,” SpiceJet said in the statement.

Even at the inauguration of the ITPO tunnel, he made it a point to pick up garbage and lead by example.” The project has been built at a cost of more than Rs 920 crore, entirely funded by the Central government. This long-awaited tunnel will serve as an alternative route to Bhairon Marg, which is running much beyond its carriage capacity and is expected to take more than half of the traffic load of Bhairon Marg. Along with the tunnel, there will be six underpasses -- four on Mathura Road, one on Bhairon Marg and one on the intersection of Ring Road and Bhairon Marg.

NEW DELHI, JUNE 19 (IANS): While FIIs are on a selling spree in the Indian markets, domestic institutions, including mutual funds and insurance companies, have been acting as a buffer, driven by the large inflow of retail money into the stock markets. FIIs recorded the eighth consecutive month of outflows in May at $4.9 billion. However, the outflows were more than offset by material DII inflows. In May 2022, DIIs posted the highest inflows since March 2020 at $6.1 billion, as per a report by Motilal Oswal Financial Services. The Nifty ended 3 per cent lower MoM at 16,585 in May - the second consecutive month of a decline. However, Nifty has remained resilient in CY22YTD despite multiple headwinds. India was among the laggards in May. Russia (minus 7 per cent), India (minus 3 per cent), and Indonesia (minus 1 per cent) ended lower in local currency terms.
the Naga issue is not resolved before the 2023 Assembly polls, the elected representatives-- who have time and again promised to resign to pave way for any settlement, will refuse to resign once elected and which could prove to be another hurdle. On the other hand, by end of 2023, the Central leadership would be more focused on the 2024 General elections (Lok Sabha). As reported, Centre has said on numerous occasions that the ball is in the court of the NPGs to agree on one solution acceptable to all, since there cannot be two solutions for one issue.

to excess liquidity in the economy. In recent months, the stock market has been witnessing significant volatility with foreign portfolio investors (FPIs) going on a selling spree amid tightening monetary policy actions to address rising inflation and geopolitical tensions. Rising interest rate is typically a deterrent to economic growth as it raises lending costs for the industries and corporates. Foreign investors have pulled out over $42 billion or Rs 3.26 lakh crore from the Indian markets in the

The cumulative demat accounts which stood at 3.6 crore as on March 2019 were 7.7 crore at the end of last year, which essentially means what was achieved in two decades has been achieved in the last twoand-a-half years. One has to accept that internet technology and mobile-based investing platforms are key enablers in the democratisation of the equity market culture among the masses in India. Not just retail investors, footfalls of domestic institutional investors with deep pockets too are high in the markets and they have the capabilities to purchase equities of match amount to that of the foreign institutional investors. Because of the large participation by domestic investors, the decline in indices in recent months in India has been relatively lower as compared to the US and various other major global exchanges.

Global investment bank Morgan Stanley had said in late April the combined holdings of the domestic mutual funds and direct households in stocks have risen over 600 basis points since 2015, whereas those of FPIs have declined about 150 basis points. It can be gauged by looking at the figures of opening of the dematerialised (demat) accounts in the country. Opening of new demat accounts, monthly, on an average increased seven-fold since financial year FY20. Ukraine war could last ‘years’: NATO chief
KYIV (UKRAINE), JUN 19 (AP): Four months of brutal fighting in Ukraine appear to be straining the morale of troops on both sides, prompting desertions and rebellion against officers’ orders, British defense officials said Sunday. NATO’s chief warned the war could drag on for “years.” “Combat units from both sides are committed to intense combat in the Donbas and are likely experiencing variable morale,” Britain’s defense ministry said in its daily assessment of the war. “Ukrainian forces have likely suffered desertions in recent weeks,” the assessment said, but added that “Russian morale highly likely remains especially troubled.” It said “cases of whole Russian units refusing orders and armed stand-offs between officers and their troops continue to occur.” Separately, the Ukrainian Main Intelligence Directorate released what it said were intercepted phone calls in which Russian soldiers complained about frontline conditions, poor equipment, and overall lack of personnel, according to a report by the Institute for the

NAGALAND POST, DIMAPUR MONDAY, JUNE 20, 2022
Jens Stoltenberg
Study of War. In an interview published on Sunday in the German weekly Bild am Sonntag, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said that “nobody knows” how long the war could last. “We need to be prepared for it to last for years,” he said. He also urged allies ”not to weaken support for Ukraine, even if the costs are high, not only in terms of military aid, but also because of the increase in energy and food goods prices.” In recent days, Gazprom, the Russian gas company, has reduced supplies to two major European clients — Germany and Italy. In Italy’s case, energy officials are expected to huddle this week about the situation. The head of Ital-
ian energy giant ENI said on Saturday that with additional gas purchased from other sources, Italy should make it through the coming winter, but he warned Italians that “restrictions” affecting gas use might be necessary. Germany will limit the use of gas for electricity production amid concerns about possible shortages caused by a reduction in supplies from Russia, the country’s economy minister said on Sunday. Germany has been trying to fill its gas storage facilities to capacity ahead of the cold winter months. Economy Minister Robert Habeck said that Germany will try to compensate for the move by increasing the burning of coal, a more polluting fossil fuel.
“That’s bitter, but it’s simply necessary in this situation to lower gas usage,” he said. Stoltenberg stressed, though, that “the costs of food and fuel are nothing compared with those paid daily by the Ukrainians on the front line.” Stoltenberg added: What’s more, if Russian President Vladimir Putin should reach his objectives in Ukraine, like when he annexed Crimea in 2014, “we would have to pay an even greater price.” Britain’s defense ministry said that both Russia and Ukraine have continued to conduct heavy artillery bombardments on axes to the north, east and south of the Sieverodonetsk pocket, but with little change in the front line. Luhansk governor Serhiy Haidai said via Telegram on Sunday: “It is a very difficult situation in Sievierodonetsk, where the enemy in the middle of the city is conducting round-the-clock aerial reconnaissance with drones, adjusting fire, quickly adjusting to our changes.” Russia’s defense ministry claimed on Sunday that Russian and separatist forces have taken control of Metolkine, a settlement
just to the east of Sievierodonetsk. On Saturday, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy made a trip south from Kyiv to visit troops and hospital workers in the Mykolaiv and Odesa regions along the Black Sea. He handed out awards to dozens of people at every stop, shaking their hands and thanking them again and again for their service. Some time after Zelenskyy left Mykolaiv, “the enemy carried out fire damage against units of the Defense Forces with cannon and rocket artillery in the areas of the settlements of Pravdyne, Posad-Pokrovskoe and Blahodatne,” according to the Ukrainian army briefing on Sunday. In other attacks in the south, Ukraine’s southern military operational command said on Sunday that two people were killed in shelling of the Galitsyn community in the Mykolaiv region and that shelling of the Bashtansky district is continuing. Russia’s defense ministry said seaborne missiles destroyed a plant in Mykolaiv city where Western-supplied howitzers and armored vehicles were stored.
Duterte’s daughter takes oath as Philippines vice president MANILA, JUN 19 (AP): Sara Duterte, the daughter of the outgoing populist president of the Philippines, took her oath on Sunday as vice president following a landslide electoral victory she clinched despite her father’s human rights record that saw thousands of drug suspects gunned down. The inauguration in their southern hometown of Davao, where she’s the outgoing mayor, comes two weeks before she assumes office on June 30 as specified in the Philippine Constitution. Presidentelect Ferdinand Marcos Jr., Duterte’s running mate, will take his oath in Manila on June 30. “I’m not the best or the most intelligent person in the Philippines and the world but nobody can beat the toughness of my heart as a Filipino,” Duterte, who wore a green traditional gown, said in a speech after she took her oath before a Supreme Court associate justice, her hand resting on a Bible held by her mother. “The voice of 32.2 million Filipinos was loud and clear - with the message to serve our motherland,”
Sara Duterte and Rodrigo Duterte
Duterte said, referring to the votes she got, to an applause from thousands of supporters. Fondly called by supporters as “Inday Sara,” the mother of three called for national unity and devotion to God and asked Filipinos to emulate the patriotism of the country’s national hero Jose Rizal. She cited longstanding social ills facing Filipino children, including poverty, broken families, illegal drugs, bullying and online misinformation and asked parents to ingrain in them the values of integrity, discipline, respect for others and compassion. President Rodrigo Duterte, 77, led the VIPs in the heavily guarded ceremony at a public square
near city hall in the port city of Davao, where he had also served as a longtime mayor starting in the late 1980s. His family, hailing from modest middle-class background, built a formidable political dynasty in the restive southern region long troubled by communist and Muslim insurgencies and violent political rivalries. Duterte’s presidency has been marked by a brutal anti-drugs campaign that has left thousands of mostly petty suspects shot dead by police or vigilantes. The drug killings are being investigated by the International Criminal Court as a possible crime against humanity.
SL to resume flights from Jaffna Islamic State terror group claims attack on Sikh gurdwara in Kabul to India in July: Aviation Minister C O LO M B O, J U N 1 9 (PTI): Sri Lanka will resume flights from the northern Jaffna peninsula to India next month, Aviation Minister Nimal Siripala de Silva has said, asserting that the move would support the country’s tourism industry and help in easing the economic crisis. The Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority plans to attract 800,000 tourists during the rest of the year. “The northern Jaffna peninsula’s Palaly airport is to resume flights to India from next month,” Aviation Minister Nimal Siripala de Silva said on Saturday. However, he did not specify a date. “Resuming the flights would improve tourism and

help the country in the current dollar crisis,” de Silva said after inspecting the airport. The present runway can only accommodate 75-seater flights and therefore needs to be extended, he said. He hoped for Indian assistance for runway improvements. The airport was named the Jaffna international airport in October 2019. The first international flight to land there was from Chen-
nai. The 2019 redevelopment of the airport was funded by both Sri Lanka and India. Earlier, India’s Alliance Air conducted three weekly flights from Chennai to Palaly. However, after a government change in Sri Lanka in November 2019, the flight operations were halted. Sri Lanka is currently facing its worst economic crisis since independence from Britain in 1948. The economic crisis has prompted an acute shortage of essential items like food, medicine, cooking gas and other fuel, toilet paper, and even matches, with Sri Lankans being forced to wait in lines lasting hours outside stores to buy fuel and cooking gas.
KABUL, JUN 19 (PTI): The Islamic State has claimed responsibility for the deadly terror attack on a gurdwara in Afghanistan’s capital Kabul that killed two persons, including one Sikh community member, calling it “an act of support” for the Prophet. Several blasts tore through Gurdwara Karte Parwan in Kabul’s Bagh-e Bala neighbourhood on Saturday while Afghan security personnel thwarted a bigger tragedy by stopping an explosive-laden vehicle from reaching the place of worship of the minority community. In a statement posted on its Amaq propaganda site late Saturday, the Islamic State – Khorasan Province (ISKP), an affiliate of the Islamic State militant group, said the attack

targeted Hindus and Sikhs and the “apostates” who protected them in “an act of support for the Messenger of Allah”. The dreaded terror group said one of its fighters “penetrated a temple for Hindu and Sikh polytheists” in Kabul, after killing the guard, and opened fire on
the worshippers inside with his machine gun and hand grenades. It was the latest targeted assault on a place of worship of the Sikh community in Afghanistan. The three attackers were killed by the Taliban forces. The terror attack on
the gurdwara came days after the ISKP in a video message warned of an attack against Hindus to avenge the remarks against Prophet Mohammad by two former BJP functionaries. In the past too, the ISKP had claimed responsibility for attacks on places of worship of Hindus, Sikhs and Shia Muslims in Afghanistan. Meanwhile, the attack on the gurdwara in Kabul drew severe criticism from Afghan leaders and the UN. Afghanistan’s former president Hamid Karzai condemned the attack and called it a “terrorist incident.” Abdullah Abdullah, former chairman of the Afghan High Council National Reconciliation, also condemned the attack. “I strongly condemn... heinous and cowardly ter-
rorist attack on our Sikh community Gurdwara in Karta-e Parwan,” Abdullah Abdullah was quoted as saying by Tolo news. The UN Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) on Twitter said it “strongly condemns today’s attack on a Sikh temple in Kabul.” “Attacks on civilians must cease immediately,” the UNAMA said and called for the protection of all minorities in Afghanistan. Afghanistan was once home to tens of thousands of Sikhs and Hindus, but decades of conflict have seen the number dwindle to a tiny handful. In recent years, those who have remained have been repeatedly targeted by the local branch of the Islamic State (IS) militant group.
SL reaches out to Russian Imran conspired to disqualify oppn leadership: Pak min 20 Indian fishermen jailed companies for crude oil in Pak for five years released ISLAMABAD, JUN 19 (PTI): Pakistan’s ousted prime minister Imran Khan had “fascist plans” to extend his rule for 15 years and wanted to get the entire opposition leadership disqualified by the end of this year, a senior PML-N minister has claimed, according to a media report on Sunday. Speaking at a TV show on Saturday, Minister for Power Khurram Dastagir said he had prior information that Khan wanted to clean sweep the entire opposition leadership, including Pakistan Muslim LeagueNawaz (PML-N) president and incumbent premier Shehbaz Sharif, Ahsan Iqbal and former Pakistan prime
question of what prompted his party to accept the country’s rule for just one and a half years, he said: “The coalition was formed only because Mr Khan had fascist plans to attack this country.” Responding to the claim made by Dastagir during the show, a clip of which he uploaded on his Twitter account, PTI leader and ex-minister Ali Haider Zaidi said: “Khurram Dastagir admitted openly that the constitutionally elected government of Imran Khan was removed through a conspiracy to save the opposition from corruption cases. It is unfortunate that these thugs are now killing [destroying] the economy.”
Khan, 69, was ousted from power in April after losing a no-confidence vote in his leadership, which he alleged was part of a US-led conspiracy targeting him because of his independent foreign policy decisions on Russia, China and Afghanistan. Ever since his ouster, the cricketer-turned-politician has been protesting and calling for fresh elections because, in his words, the incumbent coalition government led by Prime Minister Sharif was “imported” and is not a true representative of the Pakistani people. Khan has led his thousands of PTI supporters to several cities of Pakistan in anti-government protests.
COLOMBO, JUN 19 (IANS): Sri Lanka’s Minister of Power and Energy Kanchana Wijesekera said on Sunday that they have reached out to several Russian crude oil suppliers in an effort to solve the island nation’s energy crisis. Wijesekera said that they are trying to obtain Russian crude oil on credit to keep the country’s only oil refinery running, reports Xinhua news agency. The Minister said that Sri Lanka’s oil bill has risen to $550 million a month by June 2022. He added that Sri Lanka now owes oil firms $730 million for oil im-
ported on credit, and these companies will now only supply fuel after upfront payments or deposits. Sri Lanka has suffered crippling fuel shortages since February as a foreign exchange crisis worsened in the South Asian country. The country’s stateowned fuel distributor Ceylon Petroleum Corporation said it only has 5,000 metric tonnes of petrol and thus only 500 metric tonnes will be released to gas stations each day. The country currently needs at least $5 billion over the next six months to pay for basic essential items such as food, fuel and fertiliser.

Hurkacz clinches Halle Open singles title immediate inroads in the championship match as he broke twice to race to a 5-0 lead early. He wrapped up the first set with ease having fired eight winners, including five aces.

HALLE (GERMANY), JUN 19 (IANS): Poland’s Hubert Hurkacz won the Halle Open title after defeating World No. 1 Daniil Medvedev in straight sets here on Sunday. The fifth-seed Pole broke Medvedev three times on his way to a quick-fire 6-1, 6-4 win and secured his maiden tour-level title on grass in just 63 minutes on OWL Arena.
Claiming his fifth tourlevel trophy in Halle sees Hurkacz projected to return to the Top 10 in the ATP Rankings for the first time since January. The 2021 Wimbledon semifinalist Hurkacz had come through his quarterfinal against Felix AugerAliassime and his semifinal against Nick Kyrgios without breaking serve once, but the 25-year-old made

Berrettini now leads the 30-year-old 3-0 in their ATP Head to Head series, while he has improved his record on grass to 32-6, having won 20 of his past 21 matches on the surface.
In a lively clash, breaks were exchanged in the middle of the first set as both players looked to find their rhythm on serve. Berrettini struck first when he planted a perfectly executed volley away to move ahead, but Krajinovic responded immediately as he broke back to level for 3-3. However, the Italian stepped up the intensity and power in his groundstrokes at the end of the set to clinch the opener after 54 minutes. Fuelled by confidence, the second seed continued to go on the attack in the second set. He won 86 per cent (12/14) of his firstserve points as he pushed Krajinovic deep behind the baseline and gained the decisive break in the fifth game, before he held his nerve on serve to secure the title.

LO N D O N, J U N 1 9 (IANS): Italy’s Matteo Berrettini on Sunday retained his Queen’s Club title by beating Filip Krajinovic 7-5, 6-4 in the final here, capturing his seventh tour-level trophy and fourth on grass. In front of a packed crowd, the Italian produced an aggressive performance. He fired 14 aces and demonstrated great footwork to dictate on his forehand and become the first player in the Open Era to win titles in his first two appearances in London. The second seed Berrettini has now won his past nine matches and lifted two trophies since he returned to Tour last week following three months out due to a hand injury. The 26-year-old produced a strong performance
here on Sunday. A crashing forehand return winner from Granollers proved the moment of magic necessary to break the deadlock late at OWL
Arena, where the top seeds prevailed 6-4, 6-7(5), 14-12 in a dramatic championship match to seal their first grass-court crown as a team. Granollers and Zeballos had appeared on course for a more comfortable climax to a tight encounter when leading 5/0 in the Match Tie-break. However, home favourite Puetz and New Zealander Venus rallied to force two match points of their own at 10/9 and 12/11, before Granollers’ intervention secured a seventh tour-level title for the Spanish-Argentine pairing.

Open: Viktor Axelsen, 5th T20I called off due to rain, series shared Indonesia Tai Tzu Ying clinch singles titles
BENGALURU, JUN 19 (IANS): It was supposed to be a cracking decider for a terrific five-match series between India and South Africa despite the threat of rain playing a spoilsport looming around. Eventually, on Sunday, the rain had the final say in causing the winner-takes-it-all-affair to end in a washout, with the series shared between India and South Africa at 2-2, with just 16 minutes of play possible. Stand-in skipper Keshav Maharaj, coming in for an injured Temba Bavuma, won the toss, maintaining South Africa’s clean slate in winning the tosses in the series. The visitors brought Reeza Hendricks, Tristan Stubbs and Kagiso Rabada into the playing eleven in place of Bavuma, Marco Jansen and Tabraiz Sham- Indian captain Rishabh Pant and S. Africa captain Keshav si. India, meanwhile, were Maharaj share trophy after the 5th and final T20 match. (PTI) unchanged, sticking to the been bowled after South same eleven right from Delhi, ten days ago. Even before a ball had Africa pushed India into the series opener in New
batting first for the fifth straight time, the rain came down pouring. Covers were brought on immediately and players from both teams rushed into the dugout. After a delay of 50 minutes, the match began, now reduced to a 19-overa-side affair. Ishan Kishan teed off with back-to-back sixes, slog-sweeping Keshav Maharaj with elegance and power at the same time over mid-wicket and long-on. But, in the next over, Kishan was deceived by a slower ball which dipped on him off Lungi Ngidi and lost his off-stump. The off-cutter again did the trick for Ngidi in the fourth over as Ruturaj Gaikwad mistimed the loft to mid-on in the fourth over. Rishabh Pant was off the mark straightaway with a glance through the short fine leg before the rain came again, this time
heavier. In between, umpires Anil Choudhary and K.N. Anantha Padmanabhan told the broadcasters that the cut-off time for a 5-over game is 10:02 pm with 25-30 minutes needed for mop-up operations. But the rain didn’t relent as the confirmation for the match’s abandonment arrived. It meant that a closely-fought series, where South Africa won the first two matches before India made a comeback with back-to-back victories, ended without the decider it deserved due to rain playing a spoilsport. It also signified that South Africa keep the record intact of not having lost a white-ball series in India since 2011. Axelsen, who also won the Indonesia Open in the last edition, successfully defended his title after beating China’s Zhao Jun Peng 21-9, 21-10 in the men’s singles final. The Olympic champion, who reached his eighth consecutive Super 1000 final, dispatched his unseeded opponent in just 38 minutes to claim his second straight tournament in Jakarta following his success at the Indonesian Masters one week ago. Axelsen, who overcame Malaysia’s star Lee Zii Jia in a thrilling semifinal on Saturday, will overtake India’s Lakshya Sen to top the men’s singles World Tour rankings from Monday.

On the other hand, Tai Tzu Ying of Chinese Taipei saw off Asian champion Wang Zhi Yi of China to win her third women’s singles crown at the tournament (after titles in 2016 and 2018). The Tokyo 2020 silver medallist narrowly lost the first game (21-23) but immediately reacted by taking the second period 21-6. Tai took control of the decider and saw off Wang 21-15 to clinch her second consecutive title in the BWF World

The Yamaha MotoGP rider not only scored consecutive victories for the first time this year but is now 34 points clear at the top of the standings. Aprilia Racing’s Aleix Espargaro remains second in the title race after finishing fourth at the Sachsenring but the Ducati Team’s Francesco Bagnaia has a mountain to climb after he crashed out while chasing Quartararo on Lap 4. From that point on, Quartararo asserted himself in a dominant display to win by almost five seconds after

30 laps, with Pramac Racing’s Johann Zarco finishing a lonely second. There was some solace for the Ducati Team in the form of Jack Miller, who fought back from a Long Lap penalty to earn the final place on the podium, while the VR46 Racing Team’s Luca Marini grabbed fifth on another Desmosedici.
As MotoGP riders now head to the Netherlands for the final race before the summer break later this month. Bagnaia had sensationally qualified on pole on Saturday but, as is so often the case, Quartararo was not going to allow a key rival to catch an early break. ‘El Diablo’ was late on the
stoppers when they arrived at the first corner of the race and nabbed the early lead, as Espargaro took up third, ahead of Zarco, Fabio Di Giannantonio (Gresini Racing MotoGP), and Miller. Bagnaia then overtook Quartararo at the start of the second lap but the Frenchman was not having it, forcing his way back down the inside of the Ducati as they exited Turn 1. The maneuver left Pecco having to chase, but his pursuit ended just two laps later when he lost the rear of his Desmosedici as he tried to round Turn 1 again. The crash gave Quartararo a free kick in the context of the World Championship, and a clear, one-second lead over second place in the Grand Prix, which had been inherited by Zarco after he had squeezed past Aleix Espargaro on Lap 2.
