SC panel’s clean chit to Adani group: prima facie no violation RBI to withdraw Rs 2,000 notes from circulation Conclusions‘predictable’:Cong
NEW DELHI, MAY 19 (AGENCIES): A Supreme Court-appointed panel of experts examining India’s regulatory mechanism in an investigation linked to the Hindenburg allegations has given a clean chit to the Adani Group and has said it appears there was no regulatory failure on the part of market regulator SEBI. The experts’ committee comprising domain experts has also said there was no price manipulation on the part of the Adani Group and that the conglomerate had taken necessary steps to comfort retail investors. The mitigating measures taken by the group had helped in building confidence in the stock and the stocks are stable now, the panel said.
“At this stage, taking into account the explanations provided by SEBI, supported by empirical data, prima facie, it would not be possible for the committee to conclude that there has been
Monsoon expected to advance in Nagaland: S&WC
DIMAPUR, MAY 19 (NPN): South-west monsoon, which is considered as the lifeline of agri-based economy, is expected to advance in Nagaland.
In a press release, soil & water conservation (S&WC) joint secretary & state nodal officer for meteorology, Rongsenlemzung, stated that south-west monsoon comes at a time when part of the State was experiencing high maximum temperature.
In the last five days, as recorded by the department of S&WC, the temperature of the State recorded an average maximum temperature of 24.2ºC, while minimum temperature hovered at 16.3ºC.
The highest temperature of 37.0ºC was recorded at Jalukie station on May 17 and the lowest minimum temperature of 10.6ºC was reported at Zunhebolo station on May 15.
Total accumulative rainfall of 845.9mm was recorded over different stations. Highest rainfall of 46.0mm (moderate rainfall) was reported on May 15 at Meluri station.
Chief amount of rainfall in the last 24 hours was recorded as 13 8mm in the State.
In its daily weather bulletin, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has precited that light to moderate widespread of rainfall with thunderstorm and gusty wind was likely to continue in the State for the next few days.
a regulatory failure around the allegation of price manipulation,” the panel said in the report submitted to the Supreme Court.
It also said there is a need for an effective enforcement policy that is “coherent and consistent” with the legislative position adopted by SEBI or Securities and Exchange Board of India.
The Supreme Court had appointed the committee of domain experts alongside the investigation that SEBI was conducting into Hindenburg’s allegations against the Adani Group.
The committee, which recently submitted its findings to the Supreme Court, said SEBI had found out some entities had taken a short position before the Hindenburg report and had profited after the price crashed following the report. The committee found no pattern of artificial trading or wash trades among the same parties multiple times.
No coherent pattern of abusive trading came to light either, said the committee.
No regulatory failure was found regarding Mini-
mum Public Shareholding and there was no violation of compliances, the committee said. The committee clearly stated that the regulator had not been able to prove that its suspicion can be translated into a firm case of prosecuting an allegation of violation.
Foreign portfolio investors in Adani Group stocks are compliant with SEBI’s regulations, the
The members of the SC-appointed group are retired Supreme Court judge Justice AM Sapre, retired Bombay High Court judge Justice JP Devadhar, former State Bank of India Chairman OP Bhatt, former ICICI Bank chief KV Kamath, Infosys co-founder Nandan Nilekani and securities and regulatory expert Somasekhar Sundaresan.
The Supreme Court had earlier this week granted SEBI time till August 14 to complete its probe into the Hindenburg allegations.
PTI: With a Supreme Court-appointed expert committee stating that it cannot conclude any regulatory failure around Adani Group’s stock rallies, the Congress on Friday said the conclusions were “predictable” but to spin the report as having given a clean chit to the conglomerate is “wholly bogus”.
Stressing the need for a joint parliamentary committee probe, Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh said the party has all along been saying that the expert panel appointed by the Supreme Court has “extremely limited terms of reference and will simply be unable (and perhaps unwilling too) to unravel the Modani scam in all its complexity”.
Ramesh in a long post on Twitter highlighted five observations from the report and said “contrary to the

In a surprise move, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) on Friday announced withdrawal of Rs 2,000 currency notes from circulation but gave public time till September 30 to either deposit such notes in accounts or exchange them at banks.
Notes can be deposited till September 30
Unlike the November 2016 shock demonetisation when old Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 notes were invalidated overnight, the Rs 2,000 notes will continue to be a legal tender till September 30.
RBI has advised banks to stop issuing Rs.2000 notes with immediate effect.
The Rs.2000 denomination banknote was introduced in November 2016 under Section 24(1) of RBI Act, 1934, primarily to
meet the currency requirement of the economy in an expeditious manner after the withdrawal of legal tender status of all Rs.500 and Rs.1000 banknotes in circulation at that time. In order to ensure operational convenience and to avoid disruption of regular activities of bank branches, exchange of Rs.2000 banknotes into banknotes of other denominations can be made upto a limit of Rs.20,000/- at a time at any bank starting from May 23, 2023.
“Most of the Rs.2000 notes that are in circulation will return to banks within the given time frame of 30th September. This is a routine exercise of RBI and people need not panic,” news agency ANI quoted citing sources

Revoke transfer of asst. profs: Village council, student bodies appeal CM, DyCM and others condole demise of Phukayi’s wife Tokheli
DIMAPUR, MAY 19
(NPN): Khensa Village Council (KVC) and Khensa Students’ Union (KSU) and have appealed to the higher & technical education (H&TE) department to retain the transferred assistant professors at Mokokchung College of Teacher Education, Yimyu.
In a letter addressed to the commissioner & secretary H&TE, KSU president Putuchiba Walling and KVC chairman I Alemmeren Longchar expressed deep concern over the relocation of two teachers on attachment basis from MCTE. The signatories said that relocation of two teach-
ers would create shortage of teaching faculty and derecognition of B.ed College from MCTE.
Therefore, KSU and KVC has appealed to the department to revoke the order immediately in the larger interest of the public and the student community.
The two bodies warned that they cannot remain a mere spectator when the education system in the district was affected resulting in a negative impact on the students.
KSU said it would leave no stone unturned in its demand to revoke the transfer order of the teachers.
FACSU appeal: Reacting to the recent government order transferring teachers/ assistant professors, the Fazl Ali College Students’ Union (FACSU) has appealed to the state government to reconsider its order and retain the transferred assistant professors at Fazl Ali College.
FACSU general secretary Tushikaba stated that at a time when FAC was already understaffed, the government issuing transfer order has “immensely disheartened” the students.
The union stated that sudden displacement of teachers has led to disruption in the learning process. It stated that sending away
five teachers for a duration of six months, which was an entire semester in an academic session, would have irreparable repercussions.
FACSU stated that introduction of the four-year undergraduate programme (FYUGP) under the New Education Policy (NEP) from the new academic session, 2023 concurrent with the old Nagaland University Syllabus (2012) and the Choice Based Credit System (CBCS) since 2022 would put additional strain on the college’s departments.
It stated that as per the University’s Order dated March 24, 2023, the FYUGP NEP “needs to
be implemented from the coming academic session of 2023.” The union said that the English syllabus, which previously had 15 papers, would now have no less than 27 papers to teach in all the semesters.
Similarly, the union said that Botany syllabus, which had 24 papers previously, would now have 51 papers-- practical included. As such, it said the college would require additional staff in all departments immediately.
FACSU stated that the situation has been further hampered by government transfer order.

Shops and other business establishments downed shutters from late afternoon in some of the busy commercial areas here in Meghalaya after two local taxi drivers were assaulted by miscreants last night.

Waterways to connect 7 religious sites around Guwahati
GUWAHATI, MAY 19
(PTI): The Assam government and the Inland Waterways Authority signed an MoU here on Friday to connect seven religious sites around the city through waterways, officials said.
The project will facilitate ‘hop on hop off’ ferry service, which will connect the seven historic and religious sites of Kamakhya, Pandunath, Aswaklanta, Doul Govinda, Umananda, Chakreshwar and Auniati Satra around Guwahati, an official release said.
The project is being developed under Sagarmala Programme.
The agreement for development of riverine-based religious tourism circuit on Brahmaputra river was inked by Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI), Sagarmala Development Corporation Limited (SDCL), Assam Tourism Development Corporation (ATDC) and the department of inland waterways transport (DIWT), Government of Assam, it said.
Speaking on the occasion, Union Minister for Ports, Shipping and Waterways Sarbananda Sonowal iterated the Centre’s resolve to develop the inland waterways potential of Assam and the entire North East
for accelerated growth of the region.
“The development of the riverine-based tourism circuit is a huge shot in the arm for the tourism sector in Assam. I am happy that with the support of government of Assam, IWAI and SDCL will work in tandem with ATDC and IWT to execute this project swiftly and unveil a new chapter of riverine tourism sector in Assam,” he said.
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, who was present at the programme, said the initiative will usher a new chapter in the tourism of the state.
“Religious tourism will get a boost as tourists will enjoy the rich spiritual heritage of Guwahati via this wonderful riverine circuit,” he said.
Meghalaya govt put on hold recruitment for jobs
Correspondent
SHILLONG, MAY 19: The Meghalaya government on Friday decided to put on hold all government recruitments till a committee headed by Health Minister Ampareen Lyngdoh to study the roster system submit its report. The government took this decision at an allparty meeting held in the State Secretariat in which all the political parties met.
However, opposition Voice of the People Party (VPP), which organised a massive rally at a parking lot near the additional secretariat over the issue, walked out of the meeting as they wanted discussion on the state job reservation policy too.
Chief Minister Conrad Sangma said most of the political parties were satisfied with the roster system formulated by the state government.
Sangma said that in Friday’s meeting representatives from political parties were “satisfied” with the state government presentation on the roster system, which would be implemented prospectively.
“The details of the roster system were presented to the leaders of different political parties. They were satisfied with the presentation. However, some concerns have been raised,
and clarifications sought so we have decided to set up a committee,” the Chief Minister said. He said till the committee submit its reports, new advertisement for recruitment will be put on a hold .
The roster system was never implemented in the state and therefore there were discrepancies in implementing the state job reservation policy.
Under the state job reservation policy 40 percent of the government jobs are reserved for the indigenous Khasi-Jaintia community, while 40 per cent for the indigenous Garo community. Another five percent is reserved for the other tribes residing in the state and the rest is open category.
It has been noticed by the High Court, quite accidentally, that the roster system necessary to implement the job reservation system in letter and spirit has not been followed over the years.
The High Court directed the state government to put in place the roster
system. Similarly, organisations from the Khasi Hills region are demanding that the roster system should be implemented prospectively from the date of notification. Meanwhile, VPP President Ardent Basaiawmoit announced that he would be staging an “indefinite hunger strike” in front of the
secretariat from May 23 in protest, as the government held no discussion on the state job reservation policy.
He also appealed to the public to stage similar protests outside the residence of their respective legislators from Khasi-Jaintia hills over the state job reservation policy.

The report said that in response to a request of the villagers, the Assam Rifles troopers gave them an hour’s time to visit their homesteads and collect their belongings and foodgrains on Friday morning.
However, soon after the villagers and the security personnel left the village, the suspected militants climbed down from the hill side and set afire the houses.
According to a local report, the villagers who visited their homesteads saw armed Kuki militants uphill while they were in the village.
Another report said that a Shaktiman truck parked at the front courtyard of a house at deserted Torbung village of Bishnupur district bordering

Former CM Manik Sarkar slams Tripura royal family
AGARTALA, MAY 19
(PTI): Launching a scathing attack on the royal family, former Tripura Chief Minister and CPI(M) politburo member Manik Sarkar alleged that the kings did little for the state’s overall development in their 1,300 years rule. Sarkar said that they had only opened some schools in the names of kings and queens and dug some lakes.
“The kings have ruled the northeastern state for 1,300 years banking on the tax collected from erstwhile Chaklarosanabad (now in Bangladesh). Except building a (Ujjayanta) palace in Agartala they did little for the state,” he alleged during a party programme in Sepahijala’s district Sonamura on Thursday. “They made an understanding with the colonial force (British) and ruled the hilly state by collecting revenue from Chakla Roshnabad as there was no scope of revenue from Hill Tripura”, he said.
Without naming Tipra Motha leader Pradyot Kishore Manikya, Sarkar said now one person has taken a vow to liberate 13 lakh people leaving behind the rest of the population.
During 2023 Assembly elections, Pradyot Kishore Manikya used to claim he doesn’t need power, money but wants to have a one last fight to save 13 lakh Tiprasa people.
“How come one individual says nothing was done during the past 75 years for the tribal people in Tripura? Who constituted the Tripura Tribal Autonomous District Council (TTAADC)? It was the Left which introduced reservation for the indigenous people from education to promotion. Several hundred schools and colleges were opened during the Left Front rule in the state. A total of 1,29,000 indigenous people have got pattas under the Forest Dwellers’ Right Act”, he said. Sarkar alleged that Tipra Motha’s decision to contest 22 non ST reserved constituencies was a ploy to block the Left from coming back to power in the last Tripura Assembly elections.

Siddaramaiah’s ministry to be sworn-in today
Rahul Gandhi to visit US on May 28
BENGALURU, MAY 19 (PTI):
Siddaramaiah will
be sworn in as Chief Minister for the second term on Saturday, along with his deputy D K Shivakumar and a group of legislators as Ministers, exactly a week after Congress swept the Assembly polls in Karnataka.
Congress chief M Mallikarjun Kharge has invited leaders of several like-minded parties for the swearingin ceremony, which will see Governor Thaawarchand Gehlot administering the oath of office and secrecy to the Chief Minister and his Cabinet at 12.30 PM at Kanteerava Stadium here.
The venue is the same place Siddaramaiah took oath in 2013, when he became Chief Minister for the first time. The event may turn out to be a show of strength for opposition parties amid unity efforts to take on the ruling BJP in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.
The Congress on Thursday named Siddaramaiah as the next Chief Minister and state PCC chief Shivakumar, a strong contender for the top post,
as his only deputy, ending the tense deadlock after prolonged parleys involving its central leadership.
A meeting of the Congress Legislature Party (CLP) later on Thursday formally elected Siddaramaiah as its leader and Chief Minister, following which he staked his claim with the Governor, who invited him to form the government.
The 75-year-old will become the CM for the second time after his earlier five-year stint from 2013.
While 61-year-old Shivakumar, who had earlier worked as Minister under Siddaramaiah, will also continue as
the party’s Karnataka state president till Parliamentary elections are over next year.
Chief Minister-designate Siddaramaiah and his deputy D K Shivakumar left for New Delhi today to discuss with the party’s high command regarding names of legislators who will be inducted into the Cabinet and also allocation of portfolios.
The first daunting task that Siddaramaiah is expected to face is putting in place a Cabinet with the right combinations that will strike a balance in having representatives from all communities, regions, factions, and also from among

The party also shared pictures and videos of the ministers, including Saurabh Bharadwaj, Atishi, Gopal Rai and Kailash Gahlot, waiting outside the Raj Niwas.

CONGSAYS‘COMPLETEINSULT’TOCOUNTRY’SFOUNDINGFATHERS
NEW
DELHI, MAY 19
(PTI): With Prime Minister Narendra Modi set to inaugurate the new Parliament building on May 28, which happens to be the birth anniversary of Hindutva ideologue V D Savarkar, several opposition parties on Friday targeted the government with the Congress calling it a “complete insult” to the country’s founding fathers.
Some opposition parties also asked why would the prime minister, who is the head of the executive and not the legislature, inaugurate it.
Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh said on Twitter, “A complete insult to all our Founding Fathers and Mothers. A total rejection of Gandhi, Nehru, Patel, Bose, et al. A blatant repudiation of Dr. Ambedkar.”
He was responding to a tweet by TMC MP Sukhendu Sekhar Ray, who tweeted, “26 November 2023- Indian Constitution which gifted parliamentary democracy to the nation shall step into 75th year which would’ve been befitting for inauguration of new Sansad Bhawan. But it shall be done on 28 May, birthday of Savarkar- How much relevant?”
Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla met Modi on Thursday and extended an invitation to inaugurate the new building, the Lok Sabha Secretariat said.
“Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi will inaugurate the new Parliament building on 28th May 2023, which is also the 140th
birth anniversary of Vinayak Damodar Savarkar, the great son of India,” BJP IT department head Amit Malviya tweeted.
“Veer Savarkar was born on 28th May 1883 in Bhagur. The new Parliament is designed to last at least 150 years. The current premise has been in existence for 100 years now,” he added.
RJD leader Manoj Kumar Jha said, “Shouldn’t the honorable @rashtrapatibhvn be inaugurating the new ‘Sansad Bhavan’? I leave it at that...Jai Hind.”
AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi asked why should the prime minister inaugurate the Parliament building?
“He is head of the executive, not legislature. We have separation of powers and Hon’ble Lok Sabha Speaker and Rajya Sabha Chair could have inaugurated (it). It’s made with public money, why is PM behaving like his ‘friends’ have sponsored it from their private funds,” Owaisi said on Twitter.
Congress whip in Lok Sabha Manickam Tagore reiterated the party’s allegation that its members were not allowed to speak in Parliament and their microphones were switched off.
“We need to understand that the Parliament is not just about bricks, cement and steel. It is also about the voices of people who are voiceless. It’s not about chairs, space, it is not about the facilities. It is about the right of the opposition members to speak,” he said.
the old and new generation of legislators. With the sanctioned strength of the Karnataka Cabinet being 34, there are too many aspirants for ministerial berths.
Kharge, former Presidents Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi, also General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi, several Congress Chief Ministers and leaders are expected to attend the event.
Kharge has invited Tamil Nadu Chief Minister
M K Stalin, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar and Deputy Chief Minister Tejashwi Yadav, NCP chief Sharad Pawar, former Maharashtra chief minister Uddhav Thackeray. Invitations have also been sent to National Conference chief Farooq Abdullah and Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren, among others.
It is expected that at the first cabinet meeting after the swearing-in tomorrow, the new government might take measures to implement five guarantees.
The Congress has
promised to implement the ‘guarantees’ — 200 units of free power to all households (Gruha Jyoti), Rs 2,000 monthly assistance to the woman head of every family (Gruha Lakshmi), 10 kg of rice free to every member of a BPL household (Anna Bhagya), Rs 3,000 every month for graduate youth and Rs 1,500 for diploma holders (both in the age group of 18-25) for two years (YuvaNidhi), and free travel for women in public transport buses (Shakti), on the very first day of assuming power in the state.
“Fulfilling the promises made to the people is our first priority,” the Deputy Chief Minister-designate Shivakumar said today.
Elaborate security measures have been put in place in and around the venue to ensure that the event goes on smoothly without any hurdles amid the presence of several national level leaders and those from other states, officials said and added that traffic movement will also have to be managed as the event will take place in the heart of the city.
NEW
DELHI, MAY 19
(IANS): Ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s state visit to the US on June 22, senior Congress leader Rahul Gandhi will leave for the country on May 28 and attend several programmes during his visit there, including an event, named ‘Mohabbat ki dukan’ on May 30 in California. A party source said that Gandhi will now be leaving for May 28 instead of May 31. He will first attend the ‘Mohabbat ki dukan’ programme in California on May 30. During his fivemonth 3,900 km-long Bharat Jodo Yatra from Kanyakumari to Srinagar, Gandhi had been saying ‘Nafarat ke bazar me, Mohabbat ki dukan khol raha hu’ to connect with the masses. He will also participate in an NRI meet in San Francisco, according to party sources. All the programmes of Rahul are being organised by the Indian Overseas Congress, US wing. The party source said that he will also address an NRI meeting in New York on June 4 and also attend a programme at Stanford University.
BENGALURU, MAY 19
(IANS): Pressure is mounting on AICC President Mallikarjun Kharge from senior Congress leaders in Karnataka to create more posts of the Deputy Chief Minister.
The AICC has announced only one Deputy Chief Minister (DCM) post for Karnataka which will be taken up by the party’s state president, D.K. Shivakumar.
Some of the senior leaders who have made the demand are G. Parameshwara, Shamanur Shivashankarappa, Satish Jarkiholi, M.B. Patil and Ramalinga Reddy. Parameshwara said that the party should consider him for the post, adding that it should also consider the request of oppressed
classes who have voted for Congress. “It is better to consider the request in this regard before the community responds,” he said.
The supporters of Ramalinga Reddy and community leaders have claimed that their leader is more senior than Shivakumar and Chief Minister designate Siddaramaiah.
They further asserted that Ramalinga Reddy won more elections than Shivakumar and Siddaramaiah and hence he should be considered for the post of Deputy Chief Minister.
Meanwhile, former Union Minister K.H. Muniyappa said that for the past 20 years, the demand was being made for a Dalit Chief Minister. “This time the community has to be given a Deputy Chief Minister’s post,” he said According to sources, he is lobbying for a top portfolio in the new Karnataka government for his daughter Roopa Shashidhar, an MLA from Kolar district. Muniyappa won from the Devanahalli seat this time.
Oppn parties hit out at govt over withdrawal of Rs 2,000 notes
NEW DELHI, MAY 19
(PTI): Opposition parties targeted Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday over the RBI’s announcement on the withdrawal of Rs 2,000 currency notes from circulation, with the Congress saying the move was “typical of our selfstyled vishwaguru” and his method of “first act, second think”.
“disaster”, in an apparent reference to the demonetisation exercise of November 8, 2016, when the legal tender status of all Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 bank notes was withdrawn by the Modi government.
be surprised if the Centre re-introduces the Rs 1,000 note as well.
“The Rs 2000 note is hardly a popular medium of exchange. We said this in November 2016 and we have been proved correct.
1,00 0 note as well. Demonetisation has come full circle,” he said.
Earlier in the day, Bharadwaj, the services minister, wrote a letter to the LG and urged him to clear a file related to the transfer of Services Secretary Ashish More, saying several administrative changes were held up due to the delay.
He said the file had been sent two days back.
The Congress also said demonetisation has come a full circle and added that the Rs 2,000 note was a “band-aid to cover up the foolish decision of demonetising” Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 notes.
Left parties, including the CPI and the CPI(M), and the AAP also attacked the government over the issue.
A Congress MP said it was the beginning of a second demonetisation
“Typical of our selfstyled Vishwaguru. First Act, Second Think (FAST). 2,000 rupee notes introduced with such fanfare after that singularly disastrous ‘Tughlaqi firman’ of Nov 8 2016 are now being withdrawn,” Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh said on Twitter, targeting the prime minister.
Senior Congress leader and former Union finance minister P Chidambaram said a few weeks after demonetisation, the government and the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) were forced to re-introduce the Rs 500 note and he will not

Long drawn out process
It appears that the fate of holding election to Urban Local Bodies(ULBs) in Nagaland would have to wait till the Supreme Court decides on the outcome of the contempt of court proceedings against the state of Nagaland in July. The case has arisen since the government of Nagaland had attempted to skirt the issue of holding election to ULBs on May 16 as assured to the apex court which was hearing the case on holding elections to ULBs with 33% women reservation as mandated by the 74th constitutional amendment. However, on March 28, the 14th Nagaland Legislative Assembly passed the Nagaland Municipal Act(Repeal Bill 2023) to effectively mean that the state has no municipal act. In response, the apex court nullified the NLA resolution on April 5 and also initiated contempt of court proceedings against the state. The first hearing was held on April 18 during which the apex court observed that the “ingenious method” of repealing the Nagaland Municipal Act, 2001 was adopted to evade the undertaking given to the apex court about holding the elections. The court dismissed the pleas made by the state that the repeal of the Act was in the interest of customary laws. The court held that holding of polls to ULBs with 33% women reservation did not in any way, affect the protective law on customary and religious practices under Article 371A but opposing the polls was an attempt to deprive empowerment of women. The third hearing was on May 1 when the apex court granted two weeks time to the union government to place of record, its stand on the constitutional scheme of one-third reservation for women in municipality and town council elections can be violated by Nagaland, where the assembly had passed a resolution to repeal the municipal act and resolved not to hold the elections to the urban local bodies (ULB). On the fourth hearing on May 18,it appears that the case is likely to be a long drawn battle . On May 18, the apex court while expressing displeasure with the repealing of the Nagaland Municipal Act 2001 by the government of Nagaland, said that though it respects the local sentiments yet reiterated that the law of the land(74th constitutional amendment part IV) has to be followed. The learned judges also told the counsel for Nagaland that the law of the land cannot be undermined under any consideration since there was nothing that affects personal rights or personal laws by holding polls to ULBs. The apex court made it clear that in a nutshell, the position was that the state was unwilling to implement the assurances given to the court on the right or wrong pretext that there are groups who don’t want 33% women reservation and that the state does not want to go against them. The court asked whether the state can “succumb to blackmail” if a section of a society have a contrary point of view on the issue?. The apex court then listed the matter for hearing in July next and it remains to be seen whether the case will conclude by then or extend further.

Out of the Wreck I Rise
Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? —Romans 8:35 God does not keep His child immune from trouble; He promises, “I will be with him in trouble…” (Psalm 91:15). It doesn’t matter how real or intense the adversities may be; nothing can ever separate him from his relationship to God. “In all these things we are more than conquerors…” (Romans 8:37). Paul was not referring here to imaginary things, but to things that are dangerously real. And he said we are “super-victors” in the midst of them, not because of our own ingenuity, nor because of our courage, but because none of them affects our essential relationship with God in Jesus Christ. I feel sorry for the Christian who doesn’t have something in the circumstances of his life that he wishes were not there.
“Shall tribulation…?” Tribulation is never a grand, highly welcomed event; but whatever it may be— whether exhausting, irritating, or simply causing some weakness— it is not able to “separate us from the love of Christ.” Never allow tribulations or the “cares of this world” to separate you from remembering that God loves you (Matthew 13:22).
“Shall…distress…?” Can God’s love continue to hold fast, even when everyone and everything around us seems to be saying that His love is a lie, and that there is no such thing as justice?
“Shall…famine…?” Can we not only believe in the love of God but also be “more than conquerors,” even while we are being starved?
Either Jesus Christ is a deceiver, having deceived even Paul, or else some extraordinary thing happens to someone who holds on to the love of God when the odds are totally against him. Logic is silenced in the face of each of these things which come against him. Only one thing can account for it— the love of God in Christ Jesus. “Out of the wreck I rise” every time.

FNR on repatriation of Naga ancestral remains
Introduction
The Forum for Naga Reconciliation (FNR), the Pitt Rivers Museum (PRM) and Naga researchers from the University of Edinburgh and the University of Melbourne have been collaborating to find ways forwards towards the future care of Naga ancestral remains in the Museum’s collections. When PRM opened their doors on September 22, 2020, after being closed for a period of 5 months due to the COVID-19 pandemic, they removed human remains from their exhibition displays. This was a result of their comprehensive review, and renewed efforts to work with different communities to return ancestral human remains taken during the period of Britain’s imperialism. The Naga human remains are part of this endeavour, and Naga ancestral human remains have been taken down from their exhibits and stored in boxes. Currently, approximately 214 Naga ancestral remains (a combination of skeletal ancestral remains and objects made with components such as human hair or bone) are in the Museum’s care.
Dr Dolly Kikon, a Naga anthropologist, and Associate Professor at the University of Melbourne, on reading of PRM’s initiative in The Guardian, contacted the Museum’s Director to ask about the status of Naga ancestral human remains. Afterwards, she discussed with the FNR regarding the Naga ancestral remains in PRM. Eventually, the PRM reached out to the FNR due to its involvement in reconciliation work, which led to a dialogue examining issues together around repatriation of ancestral remains, the processes and procedures involved, and its intersection with reconciliation and social healing.
Based on these preliminary discussions with PRM, the FNR initiated discussions and conversations within Naga communities to assess and understand the issue of ancestral remains by interacting with various individuals from all over the Naga areas.
The PRM has expressed it
is keen to work with FNR, “We know the FNR’s ongoing work on issues of healing, forgiveness, reconciliation, and mending historically difficult relationships within the Naga context, will be of crucial importance to help us to enable meaningful discussions among the Naga traditional elders, leaders and representatives of indigenous communities regarding the future care of these remains, including their restitution if and when requested.”
In its strategic plans, the PRM has expressed its commitment to “a process of redress, reconciliation and social healing through collaboration with stakeholder communities through openness and listening with a focus of mending historically difficult relationships.”
The Process and Time Frame
The repatriation process of ancestral remains is inter-disciplinary and consists of several phases. The phases include Public Engagement, Provenance Research (identification of closest legitimate group or community that can claim ownership of the ancestral human remains), Documentation of opinion from different Naga cultural communities, making an Official Claim for repatriation based on response received from the communities, Visit of Naga cultural communities (tribes) to the PRM for examining the ancestral remains and fostering dialogue, and Approval and Returns of the ancestral remains.
The entire process may take anywhere between 8-15 years. Throughout this journey, the method we employ is participatory research which involves community engagement, field research, building public awareness and consensus, and adherence to international law. Further, the process is guided by a commitment to nurture reconciliation and healing, promote activities and reflection around decolonizing methodologies, and incorporate cultural practices and legal instruments that honor the rights of indigenous peoples.
FNR as Facilitator
The FNR’s role is that of a
facilitator to develop and enable a Naga response to PRM’s invitation regarding the care and/or return of Naga ancestral human remains currently stored at the museum. This involves initiating a process of open dialogue, research, and consultation with Naga cultural communities (tribes), civil society, churches, and the Nagaland state government.
Recognizing that the process needs to be an inclusive, participatory collaborative and communityled process, the FNR has officially written of the unfolding process to the Naga tribe organizations. FNR has had meetings with some of those who responded and are still waiting to hear from those who are yet to respond. On the issue of ancestral human remains, the PRM primarily engages with the community since the surviving descendants of the ancestral remains or the community need to be closely involved when making the claim. As the process develops in substance, FNR will reach out to consult with the Nagaland state government and share the opinion of the people.
FNR understands this is an ongoing process of consultation at multiple levels across society which will take place incrementally – one step at a time. The FNR is clear that the Naga people who have the ownership of the process will decide the future of the Naga ancestral human remains.
Recover Restore and Decolonise Team - RRaD
To facilitate and consolidate the various activities surrounding the ancestral human remains, the FNR formed the Recover Restore and Decolonise (RRaD) team to study and network with indigenous experts, conduct participatory action research, and generate public awareness. If the Naga people decide to repatriate the human remains, RRaD’s responsibility will be to develop a strong and viable case to make an official claim to the University of Oxford. The FNR requested Dr Dolly Kikon and another Naga anthropologist, Dr Arkotong Longkumer, Senior Lecturer at the
Financial inclusion and the North East India
(From previous issue..)
Measures by RBI and GOI towards Financial Inclusion: Historically, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) and the Government of India (GOI) have been making efforts to increase banking penetration in the country. Some of these measures include the creation of State Bank of India in 1955; nationalisation of commercial banks in 1969 and 1980; initiating the Lead Bank Scheme in 1970; establishing Regional Rural Banks (RRBs) in 1975; introducing a Self -Help Group (SHG)-Bank Linkage Programme in 1992 and formulating the Kisan Credit Card scheme in 2001. In November 2005, banks were advised to make available a basic banking ‘no-frills’ account with low or nil minimum stipulated balances as well as charges to expand the outreach of such accounts to vast sections of the population. In order to ensure that persons belonging to low-income group, both in urban and rural areas do not encounter difficulties in opening bank accounts owing to procedural hassles, the know your customer (KYC) procedures for opening accounts has been simplified. The Reserve Bank has directed banks to make available all printed material used by retail customers in English, Hindi and the concerned regional language. In January 2006, banks were permitted to utilize the services of non-governmental organizations (NGOs/SHGs), micro-finance institutions and other civil society organizations as intermediaries in providing financial and banking services through the use of business facilitator and business correspondent models. To extend hassle-free credit to bank customers in rural areas, the guidelines on General Credit Card (GCC) schemes were simplified to enable customers’ access credit on simplified terms and conditions, without insistence on security, purpose or end-use of credit. With a view of providing hassle free credit to customers, banks were allowed to issue general credit cards akin to Kisan Credit Cards (KCC).
Consequences of Financial
Exclusion: Financial exclusion is a serious concern among lowincome households as well as small businesses, mainly located in semi-urban and rural areas. Consequences of financial exclusion will vary depending on the nature and extent of services denied. Financial
exclusion complicates day-to- day cash flow management - being financially excluded the low-income households as well as the micro and small enterprises deal entirely in cash and are susceptible to irregular cash flows.
Low-income households, the absence of access to bank accounts and other saving opportunities result in lack of savings ; low investments; lack of financial planning and security for old age ; difficulties in gaining access to credit or getting credit from informal sources at exorbitant rates ; increased unemployment due to lack of self –employment opportunities ; higher incidence of crime etc. Thus, financial exclusion not only widens the ‘Rich-Poor divide’, it also leads to ‘Social Exclusion’.
The Challenged ahead: The banking industry in India has undergone certain fundamental changes over the last two decades. Reforms since the early nineties in the banking sector have facilitated increasing competition, the development of new generation private sector banks as well as technological breakthrough in diverse financial products, services and delivery channels. With the recent developments in technology, both delivery channels and access to financial services have transformed banking from the traditional brick-and-mortar infrastructure like staffed branches to a system supplemented by other channels like automated teller machines (ATM), credit / debit cards, internet banking, online money transfer, etc. But access to such technology is restricted only to certain segments of the society. There is a growing divide, with an increased range of personal finance options for a segment of high and upper middle-income population and a significantly large section of the population who lack access to even the most basic banking services.
Experience has shown that in the initial phase of real and financial sector reforms, there is a need to build in adequate provisions ensuring that the economically weak segment of population have increased participation in the process of economic growth and social development. Reforms in financial systems, therefore, need to be complemented by measures that encourage the institutions, instruments, relationships and financing arrangements to be prop-
University of Edinburgh, UK, who already has an ongoing association with PRM, to assist and be part of the RRaD team.
RRaD has already begun multiple activities such as gathering information through interviews, informal interaction, focus groups, workshops, survey questionnaire, etc; consultation with community leaders and young people; public engagement and awareness building through PRM videos, public lectures, comic book, videos, etc. The team has engaged and will continue to learn from other communities already undergoing the process of repatriation of ancestral human remains.
Going forward, the RRaD team will evolve, broaden, and expand to include more researchers. FNR has requested the Naga tribal organizations it has met to suggest researchers to be part of RRaD, especially during the phase of provenance research.
A Naga Pathway FNR is conscious and mindful of the Naga peoples’ complex historical context and narratives. The Naga experience with colonization is one that continues to this day. While acknowledging the roots of colonialism, we need to have the ability to focus and engage with both past and current experiences. For instance, FNR has learnt from our work on reconciliation and healing that we need to engage with the burdens of our violent colonial history in order to heal from current traumas and pains. We cannot compartmentalize history by disengaging the present from the past.
In the Naga context, engaging with repatriation needs to occur in the context of decoloniality. Only then can we create a Naga pathway that responds to questions of repatriation and colonial violence. This calls for open mindedness and diligence from people of all walks of life and disciplines to explore the Naga path. Repatriation is not just about bringing our ancestors back to their rightful place, it is about creating spaces to tell our own stories
and histories, to change the way we see ourselves and find new ways of looking at and understanding ourselves and each other. In essence, repatriation is about justice, rights, identity, dignity, culture, sacredness, and spirituality. It is a form of decolonizing the mind and an emancipatory politics.
A Naga pathway needs to be dynamic. While it is robust in its response to the Naga situation, it must also be relatable, interactive, and contributing to the international processes and discourses around repatriation. We are aware that some of the concepts and terms related to repatriation are new to many people in the Naga context. Yet, we acknowledge that human movement and flow of knowledge is much more fluid in today’s world. Therefore, no community or academic discipline lives in isolation nor does it have monopoly over the terms and concepts they use. Hence, while terminologies may be universal, the character, meaning, experiences, and applications need to be defined, contextualized, and implemented according to the historical context and narrative of a people.
FNR and RRaD are committed to reflecting and centering the process on Naga wisdom, narratives, and values, while also learning from other communities, when forging a Naga pathway.
An elder in Longleng told the RRaD team, “how can our ancestors be at peace when they are hung on museum walls. Their spirits must be restless.” Whether Naga ancestral human remains continue to remain in boxes in the care of PRM or return to their rightful place in the Naga homeland, will depend on the Naga people. As a facilitator, FNR is open to engaging in dialogue. We invite suggestions and constructive criticism as we make the way forward together. We request all criticisms to be directed to FNR, and not personalize and depoliticize the Naga process by directing it to individuals.
Forum for Naga Reconciliation
erly geared for providing sound, responsive financial services to the majority of the people who do not have such access. The essence of financial inclusion is in trying to ensure that a range of appropriate financial services is available to every individual and enabling them to understand and access those services.
For promoting financial inclusion, we have to address the issue of exclusion – of people who desire the use of financial services, but are denied access to the same. Financial exclusion has a geographic dimension as well. Inaccessibility, distances and lack of proper infrastructure hinder financial inclusion. Vast majorities of population living in rural areas of the country have serious issues in accessing formal financial services. And that is the challenge before the banking industry today in India. Therefore, financial institutions have to ponder on the following areas so as to reach out vulnerable sections of the society and include them in the financial network. These are, Appropriate Technology; Appropriate and Efficient Delivery model; Mainstream banks’ determination and involvement; Strong Collaboration among Banks, Technical Service Provider, BC Services; Involvement of all -Especially the state administration at grass-root level; Liberalisation of BC model; Financial education/ literacy.
Conclusion: Access to finance, especially by the poor and vulnerable groups is a prerequisite for employment, economic growth, poverty reduction and social cohesion. Further, access to finance will empower the vulnerable groups by giving them an opportunity to have a bank account, to save and invest, to insure their homes or to partake of credit, thereby facilitating them to break the chain of poverty. Thus, “Financial inclusion has become an issue of worldwide concern, relevant equally in economies of the under- developed, developing and developed nations. Building an inclusive financial sector has gained growing global recognition bringing to the fore the need for development strategies that touch all lives, instead of a select few.”

An appeal for biodiversity conservation
Survival of human beings is totally dependent on biodiversity. All the basic needs of human being like food and shelter, are met from biodiversity, directly and indirectly. Human beings cannot exist without biodiversity but vice-versa is very possible.
The Earth is the only liveable planet in the universe and biodiversity play an important role in addressing issues of climate change, global warming, food /water / ecological security, environment amelioration, in addition to tangible benefits in different forms, and thus sustaining the existence / survival of the Earth.
Nagaland is rich in biodiversity with various types of forest, flora and fauna including agriculture/ horticulture and aquatic biodiversity. Our State’s rich biodiversity is manifested by its position in the Global Biodiversity Hotspot of the IndoMalayan Region and the Eastern Himalayan endemic bird area.
The remarkable rich floral and faunal diversity of the area can be attributed to the wide range in climatic conditions, elevation, gradients, and vegetation types that are characteristic of the state.
The state has the tallest rhododendron in the world, as well as the tallest and the rarest orchids such as the Tiger orchid Grammatophyllum speciosum, Cymbidium tigrinum, and Bulbophyllum rothschildianum.
The state’s unique floral and faunal biodiversity is the insurance of the people against the adverse impacts of the changing climate, as the local plant species are always more adaptable to changing weather conditions.
In the case of Nagaland, where 88.3% of forests are community owned, multi-pronged strategies are required to ensure the continued provision of ecosystem services for humanity, including the mainstreaming of biodiversity concerns into planning and implementation, and the recognition and adoption of traditional knowledge and com-
munity management of natural resources.
With the passage of time, there had been deterioration of biodiversity not only in Nagaland but also at global/ regional / country level, caused by increased population and raising standard of life.
The World Leaders signed Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), with the objectives of: Biodiversity conservation; Sustainable utilisation of biodiversity; and fair and equitable sharing of benefits arising out of biodiversity and knowledge associated with it.
In our country, the Biodiversity Act was enacted in 2002 and Biological Diversity Rules were framed in 2004 to fulfil the objectives of CBD.
The Government of Nagaland ratified the Biodiversity Act (BD Act), 2002, and framed the Nagaland Biodiversity Rules 2012. As per the BD Act, Biodiversity Management Committees (BMCs) have been constituted in all villages in the State. And all biological resources are documented in the form of base People’s Biodiversity Register (PBR).
The role of all stakeholders is equally important for biodiversity conservation.
On this day of commemorating the International Day for Biodiversity, I, on behalf of the Nagaland State Biodiversity Board, appeal to all the BMCs, Village stakeholders, Civil Society Organisations, NGOs, Academic institutions, all Government organisation including law enforcement agencies, Women organisations, Churches organisation, various stakeholders and all citizens to come forward for biodiversity conservation to address issues of climate change, global warming, ecological/water/food security etc., and also to ensure availability of biological resources for future generation.

India prepared to protect its sovereignty: PM
NEW DELHI, MAY 19 (PTI): India is fully prepared and committed to protecting its sovereignty and dignity, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on Friday and asserted that the future development of the India-China relationship can only be based on mutual respect, mutual sensitivity and mutual interests.
Responding to questions over the India-China standoff in eastern Ladakh, Modi in an interview with the Japanese publication Nikkei Asia, also emphasised that peace and tranquility on the border are essential for normal bilateral ties among the neighbours.
‘India is fully prepared and committed to protect its sovereignty and dignity,” the Prime Minister said while stressing his country’s respect for sovereignty, the rule of law and the peaceful resolution of disputes.
He also made it clear that “the future development of the India-China
relationship can only be based on mutual respect, mutual sensitivity and mutual interests” and noted that “normalising” the ties would benefit the wider region and the world.
India-China ties have been fraught since the Galwan clashes in June 2020. Both sides have been periodically holding meetings to defuse the crisis at the border but a lasting solution has eluded them so far.
On Pakistan, the publication quoted him as saying that India wants “normal and neighborly relations.”
“However, it is incumbent upon them to create a conducive environment free from terrorism and hostilities. The onus is on Pakistan to take necessary steps in this regard,” he said.
Speaking about the Indian economy, he noted that it has been one of the world’s fastest-growing.

Rajasthan government transfers 11 IAS officers
JAIPUR, MAY 19 (PTI):
In a bureaucratic reshuffle, the Rajasthan government has transferred 11 Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officers, according to an official order.
The order issued by the Department of Personnel on Thursday night said IAS officer Harji Lal Atal, who was earlier the secretary of the Rajasthan Public Service Commission, will now be the officer on special duty (OSD) of the newly formed Neem Ka Thana district.
IAS officers Bhanuprakash Yeturu, Rajendra Shekhawat, Karan Singh, Akshay Godara, Tikamchand Bohra, Sitaram Jat, Pooja Kumari Parth and
Harji Lal Atal were transferred for the second time in four days.
On May 15, the Rajasthan government had transferred 74 IAS officers.
As per the latest order, Yeturu has been appointed as the secretary of the Department of Ayurveda and Indian System of Medicine.
Singh, who was the secretary of the State Election Commission has been moved to the Labour Department as the special secretary. Thursday’s order also cancelled transfers of four officers. IAS officer Subir Kumar’s transfer from the post of principal secretary to the Governor was cancelled.

omy in 2014 to now being the fifth largest globally... While it is true that global headwinds pose challenges to growth, we have built a strong foundation in recent years, which positions us favorably,” he said.
On the Russia-Ukraine conflict, Modi said India’s position on the matter “is clear and unwavering.”
“India stands on the side of peace and will remain firmly there. We are committed to supporting those who face challenges in meeting their basic needs, especially in the face of rising costs of food, fuel, and fertilizers. We maintain communication with both
Russia and Ukraine,” Modi said.
“Cooperation and collaboration should define our times, not conflict,” he told Nikkei Asia.
The Prime Minister is on a three-nation trip to Japan, Papua New Guinea and Australia.
Earlier, Modi arrived in the Japanese city of Hiroshima to attend the annual summit of the G7 grouping and the third in-person Quad leaders’ meeting.
During the interview, he also said he will amplify the voices and concerns of the Global South, a reference for developing countries, at the Group of Seven (G7) summit in Hiroshima.
Referring to global changes and challenges in areas such as energy, digital technology and supply chains, he said, “I will emphasize India’s role as a reliable partner in addressing these challenges” and added that India’s experience would “resonate strongly at
the meeting.”
On India’s ties with Japan, he said both countries shared values of democracy, freedom and the rule of law have naturally brought them closer.
India, which is not a G-7 member, was invited by host and Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida.
“We now see a growing convergence in our political, strategic, security, and economic interests,” he told the publication.
Asked about the issue of United Nations reform amid India’s long and sustained bid for a permanent seat on the Security Council, Modi spoke of the “limitations” of global governance institutions that remain “confined to outdated mindsets.”
“These deficiencies have become evident in addressing contemporary challenges such as climate change, the COVID-19 pandemic, terrorism, and financial crises,” he said.

Asserting that Fazl Ali College, which was awarded “A” Grade in 2022 by NAAC, has the potential upgrade to post-graduate courses and gain Autonomous Status, the union said this required the work force to strengthen in number and quality rather than decreasing the number of teachers.
Welcoming the establishment of new colleges, the union, however, said that it had to be done with proper planning and resources.
It said that the current arrangement of taking away teachers from current colleges through attachment was detrimental for the parent college as well as the new colleges. FACSU has, therefore, requested the responsible authority to reconsider and revoke the order.

‘Maintain balance’ while pricing tickets: Government to airlines
NEW DELHI, MAY 19
(PTI): The government has asked airlines to exercise moderation and ensure a balance in pricing of air tickets amid a spike in airfares on certain routes especially after suspension of flights by crisis-hit Go
First, according to a senior official.
While making it clear that there are no plans to regulate airfares, the official said there should not be a huge gap between the tickets sold in the lower and upper fare buckets by the airlines.
India is one of the fastest growing civil aviation markets in the world and domestic passenger traffic has been rising after being significantly impacted by the coronavirus pandemic. After cash-strapped Go First stopped flying from May 3, there has been a significant rise in airfares on certain routes that were
operated by the budget carrier. The routes include Delhi-Srinagar and DelhiPune. Also, the reduction of capacity due to the Go First crisis has come at a time when peak domestic air travel period is round the corner. The senior civil aviation ministry official told reporters that airlines have been asked to “exercise moderation” and “maintain some kind of balance” in terms of pricing of tickets.
There cannot be a situation where there is a huge gap between the lowest and highest fare buckets,
and passengers should not face hardships in terms of exorbitant fares, the official said on the condition of anonymity.
There are no plans to regulate airfares, the official said. Go First, which is undergoing voluntary insolvency resolution proceedings, has cancelled flights till May 26. Besides, many planes of IndiGo are grounded due to Pratt & Whitney engine issues while SpiceJet is also facing financial headwinds.
The official noted that capacity is an issue and hoped that resumption of flights by Go First at the earliest would help ease the situation before the peak travel season in June.
In April, domestic airlines flew 128.88 lakh passengers, as per the latest official data.
There has been a steep jump in airfares on certain routes where Go First was
Sensexsnaps3-daylosingrun
MUMBAI, MAY 19 (PTI): Equity benchmark indices Sensex and Nifty found firmer ground on Friday after a three-session losing streak, propped up by buying in IT, tech and banking counters amid a positive trend overseas and unabated foreign fund inflows.
The 30-share BSE Sensex climbed 297.94 points or 0.48 per cent to settle at 61,729.68 helped by fag-end buying. During the day, the benchmark faced volatile trends, hitting a high of 61,784.61 and a low of 61,251.70.
The NSE Nifty advanced 73.45 points or 0.41 per cent to end at 18,203.40.
On a weekly basis, the BSE Sensex declined 298.22 points or 0.48 per cent.
The Nifty dipped 111.4 points or 0.60 per cent. “Positive global cues helped markets reverse its 3-day losing streak, as buying in IT, select banking and realty stocks aided recovery. If the global situation over interest rate movement and demand scenario doesn’t improve, we may see bouts of profit-taking in the near term,” said Amol Athawale, Technical Analyst (DVP), Kotak Securities Ltd. Tata Motors was the biggest gainer in the Sensex pack, rising over
3 per cent, followed by Tech Mahindra, Infosys, HCL Technologies, Axis Bank, Mahindra & Mahindra, ICICI Bank, UltraTech Cement and Kotak Mahindra Bank. On the other hand, NTPC, Asian Paints, Titan and Power Grid were among the laggards.
Punjab National Bank on Friday reported over five-fold jump in its net profit to Rs 1,159 crore for the March 2023 quarter, helped by lower bad loans and a rise in interest income. Its shares surged 1.61 per cent to close at Rs 49.26 apiece on BSE. “The markets trended lower during the week gone by, as the IT sector witnessed a drag owing to a weak set of numbers being declared by one of the majors.
“The concerns regarding global economic outlook too impacted the sentiments; a strong growth reported by China failed to meaningfully influence the bulls. Over the near term the markets may be expected to be volatile, led by very stock-specific movements as the earnings season goes underway in full swing,” said Joseph Thomas, Head of Research, Emkay Wealth Management.
operating. For instance, the average one-way spot fare on Delhi-Leh route saw a 125 per cent rise to an average of Rs. 13,674 during the May 3-10 period compared to April 20-28 period, as per data shared by travel portal Ixigo. During the same comparable periods, average one-way spot fare witnessed an increase of 86 per cent to Rs. 16,898 on Delhi-Srinagar route, the data showed.
After deregulation of the country’s airline sector, airfares are market driven and are neither established nor regulated by the government. Airline pricing runs in multiple levels (buckets or Reservation Booking Designators).
Civil aviation minister Jyotiraditya Scindia, on March 16, informed the Lok Sabha that “airfares are neither established nor regulated by the government”.
RBI approves Rs 87,416 cr dividend payout to GoI
MUMBAI, MAY 19 (PTI): The Reserve Bank on Friday approved Rs 87,416 crore dividend payout to the central government for 2022-23, nearly triple of what it paid in the previous year. The dividend payout was Rs 30,307 crore for accounting year 2021-22. The decision was taken at the 602nd meeting of the Central Board of Directors of Reserve Bank of India held under the chairmanship of Governor Shaktikanta Das.
“The board approved the transfer of Rs 87,416 crore as surplus to the central government for accounting year 2022-23, while deciding to keep the Contingency Risk Buffer at 6 per cent,” RBI said in a statement. The board also reviewed the global and domestic economic situation and associated challenges, including the impact of current global geopolitical developments.

“We wish to highlight these two excerpts from page 106 and page 144 which strengthens the case for a JPC. a) ‘SEBI is unable to satisfy itself that the contributors of the funds to the FPIs are not linked to Adani’ - which brings us back to the question of the unaccounted funds of at least Rs.20,000 crores. b) ‘LIC was the largest net buyer of Adani securities with the purchase of 4.8 crore shares when the price shot from Rs.1031 to Rs.3859’ - which raises the question on whose interest was LIC acting,” he said.
The Congress wishes to say nothing more on the committee’s report given the eminence of its members, except to say its conclusions were predictable and with all its limitations to spin the Committee’s report as having given a clean chit to the Adani Group is wholly bogus, Ramesh added.

Iran executes 3 men linked to 2022 anti-govt protests
TEHRAN, MAY 19
(IANS): Three men who were sentenced to death in connection to last year’s anti-government protests in Iran were executed by the authorities on Friday, the judiciary announced.
Majid Kazemi (30), Saleh Mirhashemi (36) and Saeed Yaqoubi (37) were arrested in the city of Isfahan on November 16, 2022, the BBC reported.
They were convicted over their alleged involvement in an attack which killed two Basij paramilitary force members and a police officer during a protest in the city.
Last week, the authorities announced that the Supreme Court had upheld their sentences. According to Amnesty International, the three men were subjected to unfair trials and allegedly tortured.
7.7 magnitude quake in far Pacific creates small tsunami
WELLINGTON, MAY 19 (AP): A 7.7 magnitude earthquake Friday in the far Pacific created small tsunami waves in Vanuatu.
The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said waves less than half a meter (1.5 feet) were measured off Lenakel, a port town in the island nation. Smaller waves were measured elsewhere off Vanuatu and off New Caledonia.
Vanuatu’s National Disaster Management Office advised people to evacuate from coastal areas to higher grounds. The office said people should listen to their radios for updates and take other precautionary measures.

Zelenskyy
HIROSHIMA, MAY 19 (AP): Leaders of the world’s most powerful democracies vowed Friday to tighten punishments on Russia for its 15-month invasion of Ukraine, days before President Volodymyr Zelenskyy joins the Group of Seven summit in person on Sunday. “Our support for Ukraine will not waver,” the G7 leaders said in a statement released after closeddoor meetings, vowing “to stand together against Russia’s illegal, unjustifiable, and unprovoked war of aggression against Ukraine.”
“Russia started this war and can end this war,” they said. Oleksiy Danilov, secretary of Ukraine’s National Security and Defense Council, confirmed on national television that Zelenskyy would attend the summit. “We were sure that our president would be where Ukraine needed him, in any part of the world, to solve the issue of stability of our country,” Danilov said Friday. “There will be very

important matters decided there, so physical presence is a crucial thing to defend our interests.” Zelenskyy announced Friday that he had opened a visit to Saudi Arabia, where Arab leaders were holding a summit.
Russian President Vladimir Putin’s nuclear threats against Ukraine, along with North Korea’s months-long barrage of missile tests and China’s rapidly expanding nuclear arsenal, have resonated with Japan’s push to make nuclear disarmament a major part of the G7 summit.
World leaders Friday visited a peace park dedi-
cated to the tens of thousands who died in the world’s first wartime atomic bomb detonation. After group photos near the city’s iconic bombed-out dome, a wreath-laying and a symbolic cherry tree planting, a new round of sanctions were unveiled against Moscow, with a focus on redoubling efforts to enforce existing sanctions meant to stifle Russia’s war effort and hold accountable those behind it, a U.S. official said. Russia is now the mostsanctioned country in the world, but there are questions about the effectiveness of the financial penalties. The U.S. component of the actions would blacklist about 70 Russian and third-country entities involved in Russia’s defense production, and sanction more than 300 individuals, entities, aircraft and vessels, said a U.S. official, who spoke on condition of anonymity to preview the announcement. The official said the other G7 nations
Biden endorses F-16 training for Ukrainians as Zelenskyy is set to attend G7 summit
HIROSHIMA, MAY 19
(AP): President Joe Biden on Friday endorsed plans to train Ukrainian pilots on US-made F-16 fighter jets, according to two people familiar with the matter, as he huddled with allies at the Group of Seven summit on how to bolster support for Kyiv against Russia’s invasion.
The people, who spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss Biden’s private conversations with allies, said he announced he had approved the training, which is likely to be conducted in Europe over the coming months, during a meeting of G7 leaders in Hiroshima, where the lead-
ers also announced new sanctions on Moscow in advance of President Volodymyr Zelenskyy joining them at the summit on Sunday. Biden told the leaders that decisions on when, how many, and who will provide the fourth-generation fighter jets for Ukraine
to use in battle will be made in the months ahead while the training is underway.
Zelenskyy has consistently called for the supply of Western fighter jets to bolster his country’s defences against Russia’s 15-month invasion, but has until now faced skepticism from the US Under export licensing rules, the US needed to signoff on any allied effort to train Ukrainian pilots. European allies in recent weeks have warmed up to the notion of sending fighter jets to Ukraine, as have elements of Biden’s Cabinet, including Secretary of State Antony Blinken, who has emerged as a staunch advocate within the administration.
would undertake similar steps to further isolate Russia and to undermine its ability to wage war in Ukraine. Details were to emerge throughout the weekend summit. The G7 nations said in Friday’s statement that they would work to keep Russia from using the international financial system to prosecute its war, would “further restrict Russia’s access to our economies” and would prevent sanctions evasion by Moscow. They urged other nations to stop providing Russia with support and weapons “or face severe costs.” The European Union was focused on closing loopholes and plans to restrict trade in Russian diamonds, Charles Michel, president of the European Council, told reporters Friday. The UK also announced new sanctions that freeze the assets of 86 people and organisations connected to Russia’s energy, metals, defence, transport and financial sectors.
Russia’s Prigozhin says Bakhmut city will not fall in next two days
MOSCOW, MAY 19 (AGENCIES): Wagner
founder Yevgeny Prigozhin said on Friday that the city of Bakhmut was unlikely to fall to his mercenary forces in the next two days as fighting raged around Ukrainian soldiers holed up in a makeshift “fortress” in the south of the city.
The Ukrainian city of Bakhmut, known in Russia by its Soviet-era name of Artyomovsk, is in ruins after
months of intense fighting between Ukrainian and Russian forces who call it the “meat grinder”.
“Bakhmut has still not been taken,” Prigozhin said in a voice message posted on Telegram. “Bakhmut is unlikely to be taken either tomorrow or the day after tomorrow.” “There is a quarter known as the ‘Airplane’ - it is like an impregnable fortress from a bed of multistorey buildings in the south-
west of Bakhmut, where incredibly heavy battles are going on.” Russia has been trying to capture Bakhmut since last summer in the longest and bloodiest battle of the war, but Ukrainian defenders have held out. If Russia took the city, it would provide a stepping stone to advance on two bigger cities it has long coveted in the Donetsk region: Kramatorsk and Sloviansk.
China to use Russian port as its domestic transport hub
and facilitate the crossborder transport of domestic trade goods with the use of overseas ports, official media quoted Chinese customs announcement.
The agreement which will take effect in June, provides China a shorter and cheaper route to transport goods from its northeastern region to its eastern economic powerhouse, of Zhejiang province, the Hong Kong based South China Morning Post reported.
BEIJING, MAY 19 (PTI):
China will make use of the Russian port Vladivostok near the border as a transit hub for domestic shipments of goods from its

SL commemorates 14th War Heroes Day
COLOMBO,
MAY
19 (PTI): Sri Lanka on Friday commemorated the War Hero’s Day, marking the 14th anniversary of the military’s triumph over the LTTE, which fought a three-decade-long armed conflict for a separate homeland for the minority Tamils.
President Ranil Wickremesinghe, Prime Minister Dinesh Gunawardena, the main opposition leader Sajith Premadasa, and the military top brass paid floral tributes to the fallen soldiers at the event, which marked the 14th anniversary of the elimination of
the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE).
Wickremesinghe, the commander-in-chief of the troops, presided over the event, attended by many relatives of the dead.
Marking the armed conflict’s anniversary, some 402 military officers and 3,348 personnel of other ranks were promoted to the next ranks, the President’s Office said.
The bitterly-fought conflict, which started in 1983, was ended by the island nation’s military by killing the leaders of the LTTE, which fought for an independent state for Tam-
ils in the country’s North and East.
The armed conflict with the LTTE officially came to an end on May 19, 2003, when LTTE supremo Velupillai Prabakaran’s body was found in the lagoon of the northeastern region of Mullaivaikkal.
Some 28,619 soldiers died battling the LTTE, while over 27,000 more were injured, the Ministry of Defence said.
Every year on May 18, while the armed forces celebrate the war victory, the Sri Lankan Tamils mourn their dead during the final phase of the conflict.

Sevilla dig deep to reach Europa League final
MADRID, MAY 19 (IANS):
Sevilla triumphed over Juventus 2-1 in an exhilarating 120-minute contest that extended into extra time, cementing a 3-2 aggregate victory to book a Europa League final against Roma.
Securing this chance to vie for their seventh Europa League title is a testament to Sevilla’s remarkable transformation under coach Jose Luis Mendilibar, who has overseen just one defeat in his 12-game tenure. The initial half was an absolute spectacle of offensive prowess, with both teams creating opportunities to seize control in a fervently contested match, a Xinhua report said.
Sevilla’s goalkeeper, Bono, made an extraordinary save in the game’s 12th minute, deflecting Gatti’s powerful header following a corner kick. Sevilla dominated possession, and Juventus goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny was forced to pull off a last-ditch save to thwart
Lucas Ocampos’ diving header in the 23rd minute. Following this, Youssef En-Nesyri inadvertently obstructed Ivan Rakitic after a corner, whereas at the other end, Angel Di Maria squandered two prime opportunities to put Juventus in the lead, sending one shot

NEW DELHI, MAY 19
(IANS): A day after Iga Swiatek retired from the Italian Open quarterfinals with a right thigh injury, the world No 1 player offered a hopeful prognosis saying the injury “shouldn’t be anything serious”, adding that she is pretty positive and will be back on the court soon.
In the match against Elena Rybakina, on Wednesday, Swiatek pulled out with the match tied at two games apiece in the third set. She initially sustained the injury in the second-set tiebreak and called for a medical timeout.
Despite her efforts to carry on, Swiatek eventu-
cider 21-11, reports Xinhua.
Shi Yuqi also came back from 18-12 down in the first set to win his men’s singles tie 22-20, 21-14 against Anthony Sinisuka Ginting, before Olympic women’s singles champion Chen Yufei secured the holders’ semifinal berth by beating Gregoria Mariska Tunjung in straight sets.
“There are endless possibilities in the mixed team competition,” Shi said of his comeback win. “In a team competition, you must have faith to win.”
Men’s singles world No. 1 Viktor Axelsen retired from his match against Lee Zii Jia of Malaysia due to a left hamstring injury as Denmark were eliminated 3-1.
Malaysia will fight for a final spot against four-time tournament winners South Korea, who knocked out Chinese Taipei 3-1.
wide and failing to lift the ball over Bono. The action remained relentless, with Szczesny twice denying Marcos Acuna, while Moise Kean’s effort clanged off the frame at the other end. Ocampos continued to pressure Szczesny, but a promising
penalty appeal for Sevilla was dismissed. Despite Juan Cuadrado apparently fouling Oliver Torres, and TV images suggesting the foul occurred at least on the edge of the area, the VAR did not intervene.
In the second half, substitute Vlahovic put Juven-
tus ahead, capitalizing on poor control in the Sevilla defence to clip the ball over Bono in the 65th minute. However, Sevilla responded swiftly, with Suso equalizing just six minutes later via an unstoppable shot from outside the box.
Fueled by the roaring home crowd -- a sea of red shirts -- Sevilla pressed on, seeking a decisive goal. Szczesny was forced into excellent saves to fend off attacks from Suso, Bryan Gil, and En Nesyri as normal time dwindled.
Just five minutes into extra time, Lamela put Sevilla ahead with a brilliant header, assisted by a precise cross from Gil, just moments after Bono had denied Vlahovic. The nerve-wracking match escalated further when Acuna received a second yellow card for time wasting during a throw-in in the 114th minute. Despite this setback, Sevilla persevered to clinch victory on yet another unforgettable night in southern Spain.
Premier League teams must aspire to Man City’s standards says Lampard
LONDON, MAY 19 (AGENCIES): Interim
Chelsea manager Frank Lampard described Manchester City as currently the greatest team in the world and said the rest of the Premier League have to aspire to the high standards set by Pep Guardiola’s title-chasing side. City are poised to wrap up their fifth league crown in six years and are also in contention to complete the treble this season, having reached the Champions League and FA Cup finals.
Guardiola’s side have a four-point lead and a game in hand over Arsenal, who must win at Nottingham Forest on Saturday to realistically stay in the title race at least until City host Chelsea a day later.

Nadal to miss French Open, 2024 likely to be last year
LONDON, MAY 19
(AGENCIES): Holder Rafael Nadal will miss the French Open after failing to regain full fitness from a hip injury suffered at the Australian Open in January, and the 14-times Roland Garros winner added he expects to retire following the 2024 season. Nadal, who has dominated the claycourt season for close to two decades, has competed at Roland Garros every year since claiming the first of his 22 majors in Paris in 2005.
“I’ll look to be 100% ready for next year, which I believe will be the last year of my professional career,” Nadal told a news conference at his tennis academy in Mallorca, Spain. “The evolution of the injury I sustained in Australia has not gone as I would have liked. I have lost goals along the way, and Roland Garros becomes impossible.”
Nadal said he needs to
stop playing for the foreseeable future to make a full recovery and return for what he anticipates will be his farewell season.
“I’ll not establish a date for my return. I’ll see how my body responds and take it from there,” said the 36-year-old, who is tied with Novak Djokovic with a men’s record 22 slam titles.
“If I keep playing at this moment, I don’t think I can be there next year.
“I don’t know if I’ll be able to come back in the
highest level and compete for Grand Slams. What I will try to do is to give myself the opportunity to go back to what could be my final year competing at the highest level.”
The French Open runs from May 28 to June 11.
French Open organisers said on Twitter: “We can’t imagine how hard this decision was. We’ll definitely miss you at this year’s Roland Garros. Take care of yourself to come back stronger on court. Hoping to
see you next year in Paris.”
Spaniard Carlos Alcaraz, who is set to reclaim the top ranking before the French Open, and world number three Daniil Medvedev said they hoped for a swift return to court for Nadal.
“Very painful and sad for everyone that you can’t be at Roland Garros or play more this year,” Alcaraz wrote on Twitter. “I hope that 2024 will be a great season for you and that you can say goodbye like the great champion you are.”
Medvedev said the French Open draw would now be wide open. “Even if he wouldn’t be 100% physically, but decided to play, he’d be a favourite,” Medvedev said in an on-court interview at the Italian Open.
“Hopefully he can come back, play some more Slams... He’s an amazing player, amazing athlete, one of the best in history.”
Swiatek optimistic for French Open despite Rome injury
ally had to decide to forfeit the match. Before the injury, she was on a 14-match winning streak in Rome.
“Basically, during the second set, at the end of the tiebreaker, I felt pain in my right thigh. I was, like, pretty sudden. At the beginning, I didn’t really know if it was serious or not.
“We did an examination with the physio afterwards. It shouldn’t be anything serious, so I’m pretty positive that I’ll be back soon,” Swiatek was quoted by the Tennis Majors website.
The 21-year-old Pole is a three-time major champion and the reigning Roland Garros champion. She has
held her position as the top-ranked player for 59 consecutive weeks.
Reigning Wimbledon champion, Rybakina, has been a difficult opponent for Swiatek this year, defeating her in both Australia and Indian Wells.
After her loss to Rybakina in the fourth round of the Australian Open,

Swiatek has consistently performed well, reaching at least the semifinals in every subsequent event. She emerged as the champion in both Qatar and Stuttgart tournaments.
“For sure I feel tired,” she said. “I think it was the right decision to stop playing because I felt pain when I was stretching, when I
did, like, harder movements,”
From the start of Stuttgart to her withdrawal in Rome, Swiatek has played every week. The extra few days of rest, she said, will do her good as she wants to play safe and do not want to exploit her body much.

“Huge credit for that consistency. They’re coming very close to becoming the greatest team, especially if they win the Champions League... In their form, you wouldn’t want to bet against them on anything.
“I think they are the best team in world football. Is it good for English football? Yeah, why not? You’ve got to push the standard. The rest of the league have to try to aspire to that.”
Lampard said he wanted to bring City strik-
er Erling Haaland to Stamford Bridge during his first stint in charge of Chelsea between 2009-21 when he was the permanent head coach.
The Norwegian international, who joined City from Borussia Dortmund at the start of the season, has scored 36 league goals so far this term - as many as Chelsea.
“I think he’s special, I thought he’d adapt straight away and show his level,” Lampard said. “I don’t know whether he would have decided to come here anyway but I was a big fan. “Credit to him because I love seeing players at that level, with personality and the hunger to be the best.”
Chelsea defender Benoit Badiashile will miss Sunday’s match after he sustained a groin injury in training, Lampard said. Chelsea are languishing 11th in the league with 43 points from 35 games.
Chopra looks to better silver effort in Paavo Nurmi Games
NEW DELHI, MAY 19
(PTI): Olympic champion javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra will look to better his silver medal-winning effort in the Paavo Nurmi Games in Turku in Finland on June 13, which will be his third competition of the season.
The 25-year-old Chopra had won gold in the first leg of the prestigious Diamond League series in Doha on May 5 in his season opening event.
Before the Paavo Nurmi Games, he will take part in the Fanny BlankersKoen Games at Hengelo, the Netherlands on June 4.
German star Johannes Vetter, who famously failed to even qualify for the final round of the Tokyo Olympic Games after entering
the quadrennial games as hot favourite, will renew his rivalry with Chopra in nearly two years.
The Paavo Nurmi Games is a World Athletics Continental Tour goldlevel meet.
Besides Vetter, Chopra will also compete against Tokyo Olympics silver medallist Jakub Vadlejch, Keshorn Walcott of Trinidad and Tobago, European champion Julian Weber of Germany and European Championships bronze medallist Lassi Etelatolo of Finland in the event.
A year ago in Turku, Chopra threw 89.30 metres to bag silver, and later improved the distance to 89.94 metres to finish second in the World Championships in Eugene, USA.

RR beat PBKS by 4 wkts to keep play-off hopes alive
DHARAMSALA, MAY 19 (PTI): Devdutt Padikkal and Yashasvi Jaiswal hit sublime fifties as Rajasthan Royals kept their slim play-off hopes alive with a four-wicket win over Punjab Kings in their final IPL league match here on Friday.
Sent into bat, PBKS were reeling at 50 for four but Sam Curran (49 not out) and Jitesh Sharma (44 off 28 balls) revived the innings while M Shahrukh Khan (41 not out off) provided the late surge to power the side to 187 for 5.
A target of 188 was never going to be easy and RR needed to complete the chase in 18.3 overs to momentarily get ahead of Royal Challengers Bangalore’s net runrate but they couldn’t. But still RR got two points to stay afloat with Jaiswal (50 off 36) scripting the chase, adding 73 off 49 balls with Padikkal
Rajasthan Royals batters Devdutt Padikkal and Yashasvi Jaiswal during the IPL match against Punjab Kings. (PTI) (51 off 30) and another 47 off 22 balls with Shimron Hetmyer (46) as RR romped home in 19.4 overs. With the win, RR
moved to fifth spot with 14 points, same as RCB (4th) and Mumbai Indians (6th), who both still have a match to play in the league stage.
The loss meant, PBKS are officially out of the IPL. Chasing 188, RR suffered an early setback with Kagiso Rabada getting Jos Buttler LBW for his third duck. But Padikkal and Jaiswal batted with purpose to take RR to 85 for 1 in 9.4 overs. While Jaiswal began the chase with a hat-trick of fours, Padikkal, who was promoted up the order, then took the charge, sending the bowlers on a leather hunt. But RR lost Padikkal and skipper Sanju Samson (3) in quick succession to leave them at 90 for 3 in the 11th over. Jaiswal completed his fifty in 35 balls before falling to a reverse hit off Nathan Ellis. With both Jaiswal and Padikkal departing after completing their fifties, RR still needed 51 off 33 balls and it was Riyan Parag (20 off 12 balls) who slammed two successive sixes off
Rabada to bring the equation down.
But PBKS skipper Shikhar Dhawan pulled off a sensational catch to end Hetymer’s stay even as RR brought in Dhruv Jurel as an impact sub, who clobbered a six in the fourth ball of the last over to knock off the winning runs.
Earlier, PBKS were down 50 for 4 in 6.3 overs but Curran and Jitesh added 64 to resurrect the innings with the latter being the aggressor. Curran and Shahrukh then piled up 73 off 37 balls with 46 of them coming off the last 2 overs to take them to a good score.

“He’s been playing well and I’m playing [well] also,” Tsitsipas said on court of his upcoming match against Medvedev, after his win on Thursday night.
“I feel good on court, regardless if it’s a night session or a day session and I really hope to bring the best out of me against him. I feel like he’s playing better than the years before,” he added.

Brij Bhushan’s comments on our medals demeaning: Protesting wrestlers
NEW DELHI, MAY 19 (PTI/IANS):
Olympic medallist Bajrang Punia has criticised former Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh for his alleged comment that a medal is worth just Rs 15 and the grapplers should also return the crores of rupees the government has spent on their training.
Brij Bhushan, who is in the eye of a storm for allegedly sexually harassing women wrestlers including a minor, said in a video interview that not just the medals, the athletes should also return the crores of rupees spent on their training.
Bajrang, who is leading the protest at Jantar Mantar along with fellow Olympic
medallist Sakshi Malik and Asian Games gold medallist Vinesh Phogat, said on Friday that the medal Brij Bhushan was demeaning by saying it was worth just Rs
15 had been “earned after 15 years of toil”. “He (Brij Bhushan) has not given me the medal in charity. I have earned it for the country with my blood and sweat.
He shouldn’t have uttered these words if he truly respects our achievements,” added Bajrang.
Sakshi said that, at an age when she should have been playing with dolls, she took up wrestling and “embraced the mud pits”.
“The medal he (Brij Bhushan) is saying is worth Rs 15, we have sacrificed everything for that. It’s shameful that the champion athletes of the country are seeing such bad days. I have won this medal for the country, no one can put a price on it,” said Sakshi.
Earlier in the day, top Congress leader Sachin Pilot arrived at the Jantar Mantar to extend his support to the agitating wrestlers.
Securityheightenedbeforeend of ultimatum to arrest WFI chief
As the ultimatum for the arrest of Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh by wrestlers and a 31-member committee which includes farmers and Khap leaders draws to a close on May 21, the Delhi Police has heightened security measures at Jantar Mantar and Delhi border areas. This preparation comes in anticipation of a farmers’ gathering in solidarity with the protesting wrestlers. According to police, the vehicles entering Delhi will be checked and addi-
tional pickets will be put up at the border areas.
At the protest site, a series of multi-layer barricades have been strategically established, reinforcing the security measures.
“The area is under constant surveillance through the aid of CCTV cameras, ensuring roundthe-clock monitoring. Patrolling efforts are set to escalate, demonstrating an increased presence of security personnel. Additional reinforcements will be promptly deployed if the situation necessitates it,” said an official.
36 minutes.
The Greek used a good mix of power and creativity, changing the spin on his shots and using his drop shot well. Coric missed a defensive backhand long to allow Tsitsipas to serve for the first set, which he did successfully.
The fifth seed appeared in full control when
he hit a forehand passing shot to break in the second set, but he gave back his advantage in the next game.
Tsitsipas did not panic against a player who has rallied against him before. He earned his third service break of the match and then successfully served for his place in the semi-finals.
“This is clay-court tennis, things escalated quite quickly. And there was a turning point, but accompanied by my great shotmaking, at the very important moments, I was able to retrieve that and get back and hold,” Tsitsipas said. Medvedev leads Tsitsipas 7-4 in their ATP Head to Head series. However, the Greek has won three of their past four clashes, including a straight-sets victory two years ago in the Roland Garros quarterfinals.
