Centre u-turn in repealing 3 farm laws Guaranteed MSP still pending: SKM
Narendra Modi
NEW DELHI/CHANDIGARH, NOV 19 (PTI/ AGENCIES): Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday made his biggest policy reversal since assuming power in 2014, scrapping the controversial farm laws ahead of crucial state elections following a year of persistent street protests. The prime minister also apologised to people of the country, saying he wanted to convey to them with a “sacred heart” that there may have been some shortcomings in the government’s efforts that it could not convince some farmers about the truth which was “as clear as the light of a candle”. The announcement
comes ahead of elections in 2022, including Uttar Pradesh, which is considered a crucial indicator of national sentiment ahead of the 2024 Lok Sabha polls. Five states will hold elections in the first half of 2022, including Punjab, home to many Sikh farmers who have spearheaded the protests by tens of thousands of farmers that began roughly a year ago. Modi’s announcement also coincided with Guru Nanak Jayanti, which was welcomed by leaders of the farmers’ unions spearheading the agitation. Modi in his speech noted that it is the birth anniversary of Guru Nanak Dev and no occasion to blame anyone. “I have come to tell you that we have decided to repeal the three farm laws. In the upcoming Parliament session starting at the end of this month, we will complete the constitutional process to repeal the three farm laws,” Modi said in his 9 am address. He appealed to all his farmer friends to return home to their fields and families and make a new
beginning on this auspicious occasion, a day when gurudwaras across the country are lit up to celebrate the festival. Thousands of farmers had set up camps at entry points into the national capital since November 26 last year. Modi also spoke at length about the benefits the farm laws were expected to bring to farmers, especially those with small landholdings, and his government’s good faith in enacting these legislations. The gover nment brought them with full integrity and clear conscience in the interest of farmers and country, he added. Leaders of farmers' unions, however, fear that the laws will expose them to the vagaries of the free market and corporatisation of agriculture. Apar t from repealing the laws, Modi also announced setting up a committee to make MSP system more effective and transparent as well as suggest ways to promote zero budgeting based-agriculture, a term for farming based on natural fertilizers and local seeds, to change crop patterns as per the changing needs of the country
POLLS COMPEL REPEAL OF FARM LAWS: OPPN
Opposition parties on Friday credited farmers for the rollback of the three farm laws saying the “fear of defeat” in upcoming assembly polls has forced the BJP to take this decision. Opposition parties which had been supporting the farmers in their demands welcomed the decision and lauded the farmers for their victory, saying the BJP has taken the decision for “political expendiency” as it was facing defeat in crucial assembly polls including Punjab and Uttar Pradesh. Congress said people of the country now know that the country’s victory now lies ahead of the BJP’s defeat as fear of defeat in upcoming assembly polls has forced Modi to take back his decision and announce the repeal of three farm laws. Congress president Sonia Gandhi termed it as a “victory of the will of 62 crore farmers and sacrifices of more than 700 farmers who laid their lives for this struggle”, and hoped that the BJP government would have drawn some lessons for future. Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal, while welcoming the announcement, said it is not just a victory of farmers but also of de-
mocracy. Samajwadi Party leader Akhilesh Yadav claimed that it is the fear of election defeat that the BJP has been forced to take this decision. “Apology will not help this time. The people understand everything and will teach the BJP a lesson,” he said. BSP president Mayawati congratulated farmers but termed the Central government’s move a “very late one.” Shiromani Akali Dal supremo Parkash Singh Badal said it is “a defining moment in history and a historic victory of farmers on Gurupurab. The agitation succeeded due to the persistence of the farmers, AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi said. Shiv Sena and NCP, which share power in Maharashtra, said the government had to finally bow down before the agitating farmers. The CPI(M) demanded that Modi should apologise for the hardship and trouble caused by his “dictatorial step” of enacting the three farm laws. The victory of farmers is the victory of the country, Rashtriya Lok Dal chief Jayant Chaudhary said, while TMC leader Abhishek Banerjee said the farmers have shown the BJP their true place.
Farmers celebrate after Prime Minister announced repealing of the three farm laws.
N E W D E L H I , N OV 1 9 (AGENCIES):Welcoming Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s announcement to repeal the three contentious farm laws, the Samyukt Kisan Morcha (SKM), an umbrella body of farm unions, on Friday said its future course of action will be decided after the core committee meetings on Saturday and Sunday. Farmer leader and SKM’s core committee member Darshan Pal said it was good that the Centre has decided to repeal the farm laws but demanded the legislations be formally revoked in the upcoming Winter Session of Parliament. The other demand was that the Union government should come to an understanding on the minimum support price (MSP) for crops, he said, adding, “We want a legal guarantee on MSP.” “We will not leave the protest sites unless these demands are met. To bring a consensus on the future course of the agitation and discuss MSP and other demands of
farmers, the farmers’ body will meet on Saturday and Sunday. The final decision will be taken at the SKM’s core committee meeting on Sunday,” Pal told PTI. “We hope that the government will not let its announcement go waste and go full length to fulfil our demands, including legislation to guarantee MSP,” it said. The farmers’ body said that if the farm laws are formally repealed, it will be a “historic victory” for the farmers who struggled for a year. The SKM, however, underlined that, “Mobilisation of a large number of farmers to protest sites on November 26 to mark the first anniversary of the agitation is being intensified.” SKM underlined that the demand for the withdrawal of the Electricity Amendment Bill is still pending. Claiming that nearly 700 farmers have died during the agitation, the SKM said, “The Central government’s obstinacy is responsible for these avoidable deaths, including the murders in Lakhimpur Kheri.”

D I M A P U R , N OV 1 9 (NPN): Exactly a month after suspending its decision to split from NSCN (Reformation), supporters of NSCN (R) vice-president Akato Chophi on Friday reaffirmed the October 19 “declaration of endorsement” and elected Chophi
as the NSCN (R) president. The election of new president and split from parent body were declared by Akato-led NSCN (R) kilo kilonser designate Nokrang Lanu Aier, MIP kilonser AV Chophy and host of other regional authority leaders at a press conference at Hoito village on Friday afternoon. The development came
after Working Committee (WC) Naga National Political Groups (NNPGs) media cell on October 23 released a joint statement declaring that the “misunderstanding within the group has been amicably resolved” following the intervention of WC, NNPGs convenor N Kitovi Zhimomi and other leaders of NNPGs. It may be recalled that NSCN (R) through its MIP stated that October 19 meeting was aimed to endorse “some very important and impending issue”. However, the “declaration of endorsement” was kept on hold/ in abeyance “due to a very personal request of WC, NNPGs convenor N Kitovi Zhimomi”. Addressing the media, Nokrang Lanu Aier, while admitting that split at this juncture was not appropriate, said the tough deci-
sion was taken as NSCN constitution was defied on multiple occasions. In order to uphold the NSCN constitution (Yehzabo), he said the members elected Akato Chophi as president of NSCN (R) and clarified that the members were not impeaching NSCN (R) president Wangtin Naga and general secretary P Tikhak. Aier also said the group under the leadership of president Akato would retain the nomenclature-- NSCN (R). Recalling October 19 endorsement, Aier said, “Last time it was kept in abeyance and we were hoping that it would not come to this but we are left with no option.” He insisted that NSCN (R) members were not following any leadership but was following the NSCN constitution and leaders who adhered to it.

MCCI threatens legal action if NH-02 not repaired within Nov MOKOKCHUNG, NOV 19 (NPN): Mokokchung Chamber of Commerce & Industries (MCCI) has threatened to take legal action if repairing work on NH-02 passing through Mokokchung town is not completed within November. In a letter to deputy commissioner (DC) Mokokchung, MCCI president Tsukti Longkumer pointed out that the stretch of NH-02 passing through the commercial nerve centre, whose repairing was left half-done by
those who were tasked, was causing much inconvenience and harm to the public in general and the business community in particular. Besides the peril of health hazards posed by dust pollution caused by abandoned road construction work, MCCI said there was the danger of accidents. Moreover, he mentioned that traders and members of business community, who work along the stretch of the route, spend more than 10 hours a day precariously
exposed to the suffocating dust pollution. MCCI said competent authorities were expected to look into the matter as the health, wellbeing, rights and lives of innocent citizens were at stake. According to MCCI, the repairing work had been left abandoned for almost a year now, forcing the traders and public in general to be exposed to hazardous particulate matter over an extended period of time on a daily basis. Apart from causing
economic losses and general inconvenience, the letter pointed out that it was a blatant violation of the constitutional right to life and personal liberty of citizens. Quoting media reports that the contractors had assured All Ward Union Mokokchung Town (AWUMT) on November 7, 2021 of completing the construction work before Christmas, MCCI said work stopped the day after, adding there had been no construction activity on the highway
since then. “We expect your honour to kindly intervene in the larger interest of the people and ensure that the contractors uphold their assurance to AWUMT and resume the construction work immediately,” it said. MCCI warned that if the work was completed within November, MCCI would be left with no option but to seek legal recourse for commensurate compensation or resort to its own course of action as deemed fit.

K O H I M A , N OV 1 9 (NPN): NPF legislator and party’s Central Youth Wing (CYW) in-charge Kuzholuzo (Azo) Nienu has stressed that without peace there would be no solution to the Naga political issue. Speaking as a special guest at the two-day NPF CYW Leadership Meet, 2021 on the theme “NPFCatalyst for Peace” at State Academy Hall here on Friday, he said “As long as peace eludes us, I don’t see a solution to the Naga political issue anytime soon.” He claimed that NPF had tried to bring peace among Nagas as there was a chance for solution only through peace. “In our quest for solution, all Naga tribes had come together followed by the factions,” he added. He lamented that although unity amongst the Nagas was the pre-requisite for peace, tribalism had become the biggest obstacle in the way. Azo observed that Nagas were deeply rooted in “isms”, right from those who held high offices down to every individual who only think about his tribe and family in any line of

NPF being a party that was deeply rooted in Naga society across the geo-political divides of Naga homeland, NPF CYW reiterated its resolute commitment to work at the grassroots level to strengthen the party and work cohesively for the Assembly elections in Manipur and Nagaland in 2022 and 2023 respectively. Calling on his partymen to introspect as they had been in the opposition for some time, Azo said only during such time a person’s true colour was revealed. “When we are in power, everyone becomes our family, friends and relatives. Even people we do not know come and claim that they are our distant relatives. However, once we become opposition, then the attitude of people around us changes,” he pointed out. He encouraged his
partymen to persevere as only the bravest could pull through while being in the opposition. He exuded confidence that the party would see better days as election was also approaching. In his speech, theme speaker of the meet and Lok Sabha member from Outer Manipur Parliamentary Constituency Dr Lorho S Pfoze urged partymen to be catalysts of peace. He called on the youth to carry forward the message of peace as they move out from the meet. Pfoze remarked that the Naga peace process was in its 25th year and
therefore there could be breakthrough like the biblical story of Abraham and Sarah who were blessed with a child after waiting for 25 years. He asserted that if Nagas were to win sovereignty, it would be only a Christian country. “Let our cities be like lights on the mountain top that would be seen by every other nation. Our faith should be reflected through us,” he exhorted. Acknowledging that Nagas faced a lot of hardships in the past, he urged the people to not be tired but continue to be agents of peace. Supporters of both parties came face to face, leading to an altercation, he said. “Suddenly, the TMC workers attacked BJP supporters who also retaliated,” he added. Police tried to pacify both the groups, but had to use “mild force” and tear gas shells to control the situation, Chakraborty said. Total 19 persons, in-

Mnp ADC Bill : Talks fail, total shutdown in hills on Nov 20
Correspondent
IMPHAL, NOV 19: Tribal students in Manipur on Friday announced going ahead with its planned stirs- 24hour total shutdown on 20th November 2021 (Saturday) in the hill districts and indefinite economic blockade along national highways from 22nd November, as talks with the state government over new ADC bill failed to break the deadlock. The student body also intimated its stand to the chief minister, informing that they will go ahead with the proposed agitations as per scheduled until the demand is met. The tribal based students under the aegis of All Tribal Students’ Union Manipur (ATSUM) are demanding a special session of the Manipur Legislative Assembly to discuss the new Manipur (Hills Areas) ADC Bill, 2021 recommended by Hill Areas Committee (HAC) of the state Assembly. Pressing to address their demands, the student bodies served a seven-day
ultimatum to the state government and threatened a 24-hour total shutdown in the hill districts of the state on November 20 followed by an indefinite economic blockade of the national highways on November 22. On government invitation, a talk was held between the leaders of the agitating student bodies and government officials at the chief minister’s office in the presence of chief minister N Biren Singh today. The ATSUM alleged the state government of misleading the public by constantly claiming that the Manipur (Hill Areas) Autonomous District Councils Act 1971 is a Parliament Act and cannot be repealed by the state legislative Assembly. However, it stated that, the Manipur Gazette (Extraordinary) published by the state law and legislative affairs on October 27, 2008 clearly stated that the Manipur (Hill Areas) Autonomous District Councils Act 1971 has continued to be in force in the state of Manipur
with necessary adaptations under the Manipur (Adaptation of Laws) Order, 1972. The Manipur Legislative Assembly had also repealed the Manipur (Hill Areas) Autonomous District Councils Act 1971 in 2000 by enacting the Manipur (Hill Areas) Autonomous District Councils Act, 2000, it pointed out. The state government should stop misleading the public immediately and convene a special session of the state Assembly to table the HAC recommended bill, it insisted and appealed to every right thinking populace of the state to support the movement which aims to consolidate fraternity among all communities of the state.
JSTA, ZSF do not endorse stirs
Some tribal based student bodies today announced that they will not support the proposed agitations of the ATSUM, saying that they did not endorse the proposed 24-hour shutdown.
Joint Tribal Students’ Association (JSTA), a conglomerate of student bodies based in Tamenglong and Noney district and Churachandpur based Zomi Students’ Federation (ZSF) were among others that announced their stands against the proposed 24-hour total shutdown. They said that the ATSUM’s proposed total shutdown and economic blockade are deemed unsuitable, untimely and uncalled for, in separate statements. As the festive season is approaching, people are earning for their daily bread, education institutions beginning to open after a prolonged lockdown and ATSUM’s total shutdown and economic blockade are deemed unsuitable, untimely and uncalled for, JSTA observed. The 24-hour total shutdown will remain ineffective along NH-37 and all shops and offices within the jurisdiction of JSTA (Tamenglong and Noney districts) will remain open to the public on the day, it added.
India Mission, the Food and Civil Supplies Department had implemented the FPS Automated Project by installing electronic point of sale devices in over 4,500 fair price shops across the state and this has helped bring transparency and efficiency to the PDS system and enhanced food security, the official said. Ahammed said India has the largest food security system in the world, which proved its efficacy during the COVID-19 pandemic. More than 79 per cent of households, particularly in rural areas, depend on fair price shops, he said. Regd. No. 348/21

In the run-up to the conference, various core groups consisting of DGPs of different states were formed for holding discussions on key aspects of internal security. For the first time, over 200 officers of different seniorities from various states and UTs were also requested to submit papers on contemporary security issues being deliberated in the conference this year. The prime minister will participate in the threeday conference from Saturday.
Cabinet rejig: 3 Raj ministers offer to quit JAIPUR, NOV 19 (PTI): Three Rajasthan ministers have written to Congress president Sonia Gandhi, offering to quit their posts and work for the party, ahead of the expected Cabinet rejig in the state. Those who have offered to quit are Revenue Minister Harish Chaudhary, Medical and Health Minister Dr Raghu Sharma and Education Minister Govind Singh Dotasra, Congress general secretary Ajay Maken told reporters here. “I am happy to inform you that three promising ministers of our Rajasthan cabinet have written to Sonia Gandhi today, offering to step down as ministers. They have also expressed desire to work for the party,” Maken said. Maken said, “The Congress party respects them. We are glad that there are such promising people who want to work for the party.” Dotasra is currently the state president of the Congress while Sharma has recently been appointed by the party as the in-charge for Gujarat and Harish Chaudhary as the in-charge for Punjab. Two days ago, Gehlot had said that the cabinet restructuring would take place soon. At present, there are 21 members in the state Cabinet, including the chief minister.
Do it in Parl, guarantee MSP: Tikait on PM’s farm laws repeal promise G H A Z I A B A D / PA L GHAR, NOV 19 (PTI): Bharatiya Kisan Union (BKU) leader Rakesh Tikait on Friday said the ongoing anti-farm laws protest will be withdrawn only after the three contentious legislations are repealed in Parliament and legal guarantee on minimum support price (MSP) for crops made. The influential farmer leader from western Uttar Pradesh also asked supporters not to engage in celebrations as their “struggle” will continue. Tikait, who was in Maharashtra’s Palghar for an event on Friday, took to Twitter soon after Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced repealing the three farm laws, which were at the centre of the farmers’ protest since November 26 last year. “The protest will not be withdrawn immediately, we will wait for the day when the farm laws are repealed in Parliament. Along with MSP, the government should talk to farmers on other issues too,” Tikait tweeted in Hindi. Addressing the nation on the occasion of Guru Nanak Jayanti, the prime minister said the three farm laws were for the benefit of farmers but “we couldn’t convince a section of farm-
Rakesh Tikait ers despite best efforts”. The goal of the three farm laws was to empower farmers, especially small farmers, he said. At Palghar, Tikait said the prime minister must get the three laws repealed in Parliament and provide guarantee on MSP. “The farmers are not going back home without this... Where we are today (Palghar), crops are not bought at MSP. The issue of MSP is one that affects entire country,” the BKU national spokesperson said. He also asked people not to celebrate or distribute sweets now as the “struggle” has to continue. “Today we have a meeting of our nine-member team of Samyukt Kisan Morcha scheduled at the Singhu border head office. The final decision will be taken there,” Tikait said. The BKU leader said
he would return to Delhi border later Friday night and would be at Ghazipur on Saturday. In Palghar, Tikait met leaders of the Bhumi Sena Advisi Kisan Parishad, who have been campaigning for land rights of tribal communities in the state. Invoking Birsa Munda, the legendary tribal freedom fighter, Tikait lauded the Bhumisena - Adivasi Ekta Parishad for their support to the ongoing farmers’ protest and for fighting for the cause of tribals at village level. Hundreds of farmers have been encamped at Delhi’s borders since November 26, 2020 demanding that the Farmers’ Produce Trade and Commerce (Promotion and Facilitation) Act, 2020, Farmers’ (Empowerment and Protection) Agreement on Price Assurance and Farm Services Act, 2020 and the Essential Commodities (Amendment) Act, 2020 be rolled back and a new law made to guarantee MSP for crops. The government had so far maintained that the laws are pro-farmer but many from the farming community believed some changes in legislations would leave them at the mercy of corporations.
Don’t be adamant, return home: Mos Agri Govt don’t fear democracy, it SC panel on farm laws termed to farmers deciding to protest over MSP fears only loss in elections: PC repeal as ‘political gambit’
NEW DELHI, NOV 19 (PTI): With farmers deciding to continue their protest till there is a legal guarantee for MSP, Minister of State for Agriculture Kailash Choudhary on Friday urged them to return home and not be adamant as the Centre has met their demand of repealing three farm laws. Speaking to PTI, Choudhary said the three central farm laws were brought in the interest of the farmers after a demand for such legislations since a long time. Even the previous governments had tried to bring these laws, he noted. However, a section of the farming community did not try to understand these laws despite several rounds of discussions between the government and key representatives of the farmers’ unions, he said. “Even after the discussion, they did not try to understand these laws. I feel that we could not be success-
ful in convincing some farmers. Therefore, the PM with a big heart took a historic decision to repeal the three farm laws,” Choudhary said. The decision to repeal the legislations was taken after discussions, he said, and added that had the laws been implemented, farmers would not have to wait for long to reap the benefits. On farmers’ unions decision not to call off their protest till the minimum support price (MSP) is guaranteed, the minister said, “Can there be any big decision than this which the PM took keeping the interest of a small section of farmers? Their demand was to repeal and this demand is fulfilled now.” He further said the farm union leaders should not be adamant. “Ab ghar wapasi hona chahiye (they should return to their homes). They should focus on their farming activities.” In a major move, Prime Minister Narendra Modi in
With repeal of farm laws, BJP hopes to recover in Punjab, UP
NEW DELHI, NOV 19 (PTI): As the campaign for the upcoming assembly polls gathers pace, Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s decision to announce the repeal of the three farm laws underlines the ruling BJP’s imperative to make amends and infuse a fresh momentum in its political drive, especially in efforts to retain its dominance in Uttar Pradesh. BJP leaders said that the decision also shows the party’s genuine efforts to win over the Sikhs, who joined by sections of Jat farmers in Haryana and western Uttar Pradesh have been in the vanguard of the over-ayear-long protests against these laws, in the border state of Punjab where the party and former chief minister Amarinder Singh have highlighted security concerns and alleged attempts by pro-Khalistan elements and Pakistan to fuel disaffection. That Modi made the announcement on the birth anniversary of Sikhism founder Guru Nanak, one of the holiest days in the Sikh calendar, quoted their
last Guru Gobind Singh to stress on his intention to do good work and referred to the happy development of the reopening of Kartarpur Sahib corridor are a pointer to this. While the party will hope to make a fresh political start in Punjab in an expected alliance with Singh, who has been urging the government to take measures to end the protests, its stakes are the highest in Uttar Pradesh where it had won an unprecedented 312 seats in the 403-member assembly in 2017. With sections of Jats seemingly angry with the BJP and even several Jat leaders of the party admitting to slide in their fortunes in the western UP, where the community is concentrated, the region was seen as a roadblock in its efforts to repeat its 2017 show in the upcoming polls, more so as the Samajwadi Party had joined hands with the Rashtriya Lok Dal to pose a united challenge. Adding to it has been the grouse of sugarcane farmers over relatively low returns on their produce.
an address to the nation on Friday announced repeal of the contentious three central farm laws and formation of a committee on MSP and promotion of zero-budget farming. Earlier during the day, the Samyukt Kisan Morcha (SKM) -- an umbrella body of 40 farm unions -- said, “The agitation of farmers is not just against the repeal of the three black laws, but also for a statutory guarantee to remunerative prices for all agricultural produce and for all farmers. This important demand of farmers is still pending.” The SKM added that the demand of the withdrawal of the Electricity Amendment Bill is still pending. Bharatiya Kisan Union (BKU) leader Rakesh Tikait said the ongoing anti-farm laws protest will be withdrawn only after the three legislations are repealed in Parliament and legal guarantee on MSP for crops made.
Congress to hold victory rallies today NEW DELHI, NOV 19 (PTI): The Congress has decided to observe ‘Kisan Vijay Diwas’ on November 20 and will organise victory rallies across the country on behalf of farmers to mark the Centre’s announcement on Friday of repeal of three contentious farm laws. Congress leaders will also visit the families of the over 700 farmers who died during the agitation and will organise candle marches and rallies to pray for the departed souls. All India Congress Committee (AICC) general secretary (organisation) K C Venugopal has asked all state units to organise such rallies and candle marches at state, district and block levels on Saturday. In a letter to the party’s state unit chiefs, Venugopal said the repeal of the three “draconian” farm laws is a victory of the farmers and a result of farmers’ protests, their sacrifices and the yearlong uncompromising fight of a united opposition led by the Congress party and Rahul Gandhi. “This collective victory over evil is humbly dedicated to all the annadatas of our country,” he said.
PANAJI, NOV 19 (PTI): Congress leader P Chidambaram on Friday claimed the Narendra Modi government decided to repeal the three contentious farm laws only because it is staring at defeat in the coming Assembly elections. The BJP-led government fears only electoral defeat and not Parliament or democracy, he said, speaking to reporters here. Prime minister Modi had said only three weeks ago that the farm laws will never be withdrawn, he pointed out. “Only three weeks ago, the PM in a speech in Uttar Pradesh said anybody opposing the farm laws is antinational, they are speaking for big farmers against the small farmers and they are anti-farmers. “What has happened today? What has happened is that they have feedback that they will lose badly in the next round of elections in five states includ-
ing Goa,” Chidambaram claimed. It was the fear of losing elections which forced the prime minister to suddenly announce this morning that he had decided to withdraw the farm laws, the former Union finance minister added. “About three weeks ago, when byelection results came and the BJP suffered a massive defeat in Himachal Pradesh and lost badly in several other seats including Karnataka and Rajasthan.... by 3 o’clock they announced reduction of prices of petrol and diesel,” the Congress leader said. The BJP-led Union government does not believe in consultation, discussion and parliamentary debate, he alleged. When a “stubbor n government” like this announces retreat on the farm laws issue, it means “they know that they are losing the next round of elections,” Chidambaram said.
NEW DELHI, NOV 19 (AGENCIES): Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s decision to repeal the three farm laws is a “political” gambit to “influence” assembly election outcomes in Uttar Pradesh and Punjab, one of the three members on the Supreme Court-appointed panel that was set up to examine the legislations has said. Panel member Anil J. Ghanwat called the move “unfortunate”, adding that it will damage the reform process in the agriculture sector. He said farmers’ interests have been sacrificed in favour of political interests. “It is very unfortunate that the government has not taken any other route to convince farmers, but decided keeping in mind the assembly elections,” said Ghanwat. “At the peak of the agitation, the government didn’t succumb, but now it has gone down on its knees. This political move
Anil J. Ghanwat will not help the BJP in Uttar Pradesh and Punjab.” Ghanwat is the president of Maharashtra-based farmers’ body Shetkari Sanghatana, which supported the farm laws after they were passed in September last year. “Our panel submitted several corrections and suggestions. But instead of using it to resolve the impasse, the government chose to backtrack to win elections. But it will not help anymore. I think the government has not even read our suggestions,” he said. The SC-appointed panel submit-
ted its recommendations to the apex court on 19 March. However, the report is yet to be made public. Ghanwat has threatened to release the report if it isn’t made public. According to sources, the main recommendations in the report are creation of specific farmers’ courts, dispute resolution via judicial members, and dilution or abolishment of the Essential Commodities Act. One of the most vocal members of the panel, Ghanwat added that the government has “closed the doors” on all types of agricultural reforms. “Farmers’ interests have been sacrificed over party and political interests,” he added. Ghanwat noted that the three laws allowed agricultural produce marketing for the first time. However, now, limitations like export ban and stock restrictions will be implemented to keep the farm produce rates on the lower side — as used to happen earlier.
PM has accepted his crime, time for people to punish him, says Congress
NEW DELHI, NOV 19 (AGENCIES): Moments after Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced the government decision to repeal the farm laws the opposition upped the ante on the issue with the Congress saying the PM had accepted his crime and it was now time for people to pronounce punishment. The party said people had realised that “the nation’s victory lay in the BJP’s defeat”. The Congress asked w hy t h e g ove r n m e n t couldn’t bring ordinances to repeal farm laws like it did to raise the tenures of probe agency chiefs. While Congress leader Rahul Gandhi termed the development a victory of farmers over injustice and arrogance, party’s chief spokesperson Randeep Surjewala said the retraction of the government was rooted in its electoral slide as visible in recent bypolls. “A n t i - f a r m e r B J P powers have finally lost. Today is the day of defeat of Modi’s arrogance and a day of defeat of his few capitalist friends. The PM
to immediately repeal farm laws which affect 62 crore farmers. “Why do you have to wait for the Parliament session to repeal farm laws when you can do so through ordinances by calling a cabinet meeting today?” the Congress general secretary asked.
Randeep Surjewala has publicly accepted his crime and it is now time for the people to pronounce punishment for this crime,” Surjewala said, adding that the deaths of 700 farmers over the last more than 11 months of the agitation “were on the PM and his royal obstinacy to not repeal the laws in time”. “This decision has come because the BJP can see the slipping electoral ground as state elections approach. The power of votes is the biggest in a democracy. This power has made the government retract its steps after royal arrogance of over 11 months,” said Surjewala asking if ordinances could be brought to raise the tenures of two people, why can’t ordinances be brought

Desperate gambit
n the light of the state government’s decision to functionalise Urban Local Bodies(ULBs) after a hiatus of around twelve years during which elections could not be held in view of the contentious issue of 33% women reservation. The state government has decided to revive the ULBs by nomination and not election to get over the road block created by the contentious 33% reservation. The story of women reservation in Nagaland has swung from one end to the other particularly due to the dubious decisions of the state government to run with the hare and hunt with the hounds. Unfortunately , the legislators appear to have allowed themselves to be influenced or pressurised by sentiments. As per the Municipal affairs department, in 2001, the Nagaland Municipal and Town Council Act 2001 was passed in the Nagaland Legislative Assembly, without the inclusion of 33% women reservation which is a mandatory provision in article 243-T Part IX-A, which was later amended in 2006. Before 2001, the Nagaland State followed the Assam Municipal Act for the town committees of the state and where the reservation issue did not figure. The first election under the Municipal and Town Council Act 2001 was conducted in 2004 across the state without 33% women reservation, except in Mokokchung town, on grounds that unless the provision for taxation of land and building were omitted/deleted from the Act, the town would not allow the municipal election. When the government in 2006 included 33% women reservation, it was purportedly on the plea that the court had ruled so on a petition filed by some few women leaders. Interestingly those who brought the amendment in 2006 again passed a house resolution in 2012 against making Part IXA operative in Nagaland on the basis of the supremacy of Article 371A. Since then, the state government had done nothing to address the issue. In order to hold ULB elections with 33% women reservation in order to obtain funds, on November 24,2016 the oppositionless and all-party DAN government, (with NPF, BJP and independents)and without any debate and under the shadow of party-line whips in the assembly, steam rolled the lone independent dissenting voice to overturn the September 22,2012 house resolution which had exempted Nagaland from implanting Article 243T and Part IXA of the constitution to give 33% reservation to women in ULBs. When the state government capitulated (with or without going through the court instead of a mere letter from the women leaders), it also signalled that the stand that was taken through the September 22,2012 assembly resolution was wrong. It buttressed that point by revoking the 2012 resolution in the assembly on November 24,2016.On December 15,2017 the Nagaland Legislative Assembly then passed the resolution revoking the November 24,2016 resolution that had made Article 243T of Part IXA inoperative. Polls were announced but tribal organisations vehemently opposed it and ultimately the government withdrew the notification till the matter was resolved. On February 2,2017 the state Cabinet had decided to declare the election process null and void, also a demand of the Naga tribal groups. ULBs across Nagaland will be run by unelected and selected members on a formula of 70 male and 30 female nominees. The challenge before the government is to ensure that its peace formula works and for which the nominees will have to prove themselves capable.
DailyDevotion “When He Has Come”
When He has come, He will convict the world of sin… —John 16:8
Very few of us know anything about conviction of sin. We know the experience of being disturbed because we have done wrong things. But conviction of sin by the Holy Spirit blots out every relationship on earth and makes us aware of only one— “Against You, You only, have I sinned…” (Psalm 51:4). When a person is convicted of sin in this way, he knows with every bit of his conscience that God would not dare to forgive him. If God did forgive him, then this person would have a stronger sense of justice than God. God does forgive, but it cost the breaking of His heart with grief in the death of Christ to enable Him to do so. The great miracle of the grace of God is that He forgives sin, and it is the death of Jesus Christ alone that enables the divine nature to forgive and to remain true to itself in doing so. It is shallow nonsense to say that God forgives us because He is love. Once we have been convicted of sin, we will never say this again. The love of God means Calvary— nothing less! The love of God is spelled out on the Cross and nowhere else. The only basis for which God can forgive me is the Cross of Christ. It is there that His conscience is satisfied. Forgiveness doesn’t merely mean that I am saved from hell and have been made ready for heaven (no one would accept forgiveness on that level). Forgiveness means that I am forgiven into a newly created relationship which identifies me with God in Christ. The miracle of redemption is that God turns me, the unholy one, into the standard of Himself, the Holy One. He does this by putting into me a new nature, the nature of Jesus Christ.

NAGALAND POST, DIMAPUR SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 20, 2021
Post-mortem
All you want to know about COVID-19 Vaccination
Q: Developing a vaccine takes years. But this time our scientists have developed a vaccine against the novel corona virus in such a short time. How was this possible? Ans: Developing a vaccine generally involves years of research. First, we need a vaccine candidate that is evaluated in animals for its safety and efficacy. After a vaccine candidate passes a pre-clinical trial, it enters the clinical trial phase. While scientists have worked round the clock in the laboratory, even regulatory approvals which used to take several months have been fasttracked. It helped eliminate all the time lapses between the preclinical and clinical trial stages. Earlier, the vaccine development involved a series of steps, but in the case of the coronavirus vaccine, the scientists and regulators worked in tandem, accelerating the whole process without compromises on any protocols and any step. Q. What is vaccine safety? How do we know that COVID vaccines being administered are safe? Ans: The national drug regulators approve introduction of a vaccine only after careful analysis of data from laboratory tests and clinical trials to establish the safety and efficacy of the vaccine. Even after introduction of vaccine into immunization programme, all adverse events following vaccine administration are reported and investigated by experts to see if they are coincidental (happened by chance) or if they have any potential linkages to vaccination Q. Do the vaccines work? Why are so many peo-
ple still getting COVID after being vaccinated? What is the use of getting vaccinated if I can still get COVID? Ans: COVID-19 vaccines prevent people from getting moderate to severe forms of disease and death, once they have received both doses of an approved vaccine and have completed a period of two weeks after the second dose. Vaccinated individuals, however, may still get infected and transmit the infection to their loved ones who may still be vulnerable to the infection. Hence, one should continue to follow COVID appropriate behaviours even after getting vaccinated to reduce their risk of getting infected. This means that we wear a mask, wash/sanitize hands and keep a distance of 6 feet from people. Other CAB like avoiding unnecessary travel, avoiding crowed places and events etc. should also be followed rigorously. While vaccinated persons may get infected, such persons usually have less severe forms of disease and have a reduced risk of hospitalization and death. Q. Does vaccination protect me against newer strains / mutated virus of SARS-CoV2? Ans: The body responds to vaccination by making more than one type of antibodies to virus parts including spike protein. Therefore, all vaccines are expected to provide reasonable amount of protection against the mutated virus also. Based on the available data the mutations as reported are unlikely to make the vaccine ineffective. Q. Which vaccine is better between Covishield® / Covaxin®/Sputnik V?
All vaccines would work well in preventing the infection as well as prevent a person from going into severe state of the disease. As a longterm effect, it would be preventing death for elderly people or those who have comorbidities. Q. Does having side effects mean that the vaccine is working? What does having no side effects mean? Is it possible to have delayed side effects from vaccination? The vaccine stimulates your immune system to protect you from the virus. This process can sometimes cause minor side effects. Typical side effects of the COVID-19 vaccines are: • pain or swelling at the injection site • fever • chills • tiredness and headache In most cases, this is normal. Contact your care provider if the tenderness (pain) where you got the injection increases after 24 hours, or if the side effects do not go away after a few days. However, not everyone experiences these side effects. You do not have to have side effects in order to be protected. Remember that you can feel sick from illnesses not related to COVID-19 or vaccination. Contact your healthcare provider if you have any concerns. Q. Claims on social media suggested that COVID-19 vaccine could affect female fertility. Is it true? Ans: Rumours or social media posts suggesting that COVID-19 vaccines could cause infertility are not true and totally baseless. Such rumours were floated in the past
against other vaccines too for e.g. polio and measles. None of the available vaccines affects fertility. Vaccines are authorized for use only after their safety and efficacy is assured. Q. The Health Ministry has advised caution in vaccinating persons with a history of bleeding or coagulation disorder. How does a person know if he/she has a coagulation disorder? What tests can be conducted? Ans: There are a few bleeding disorders like ‘haemophilia’. These persons should take the vaccine under the supervision of their treating physician. Patients who are admitted in hospital or ICU and have bleeding problems should delay the vaccination till they are discharged. However, several people with heart and brain disorders are on blood thinners like aspirin and antiplatelet drugs. They can continue with their medicines and have the vaccines. For them, vaccines are absolutely safe. Q. If I have COVID-19 infection, can I still get vaccinated? If I miss my second dose due to unavoidable circumstances like lockdown or contracting COVID then what should I do? Ans. People with active COVID-19 disease or those who have symptoms suggestive of the same should wait to be vaccinated until they have recovered from their illness and have met the criteria for discontinuing isolation; those who have tested positive for COVID-19 but are asymptomatic or without symptoms should wait for three months after becoming asymptomatic
before going for vaccination This guidance also applies to people who get COVID-19 before getting their second dose of vaccine. However, if your dose is missed due to other unavoidable circumstances, the missed vaccine dose may be taken at the earliest possible instance. Persons who are due for their dose of COVID-19 vaccine are permitted to travel to the COVID vaccination centre even during lockdown/curfew. Q I came in close contact with COVID patient? Should I get tested for COVID-19 before taking the vaccine? Close contacts of COVID patients should be quarantined for a duration of 14 days from the last contact with a confirmed case to minimize the risk of onward Covid transmission. You should take Covid-19 vaccine at the earliest available opportunity without waiting for a negative Covid-19 test result. What documents are required for registration of eligible beneficiary? Q. What documents are required for registration of eligible beneficiary? Any of the below mentioned ID with Photo may be produced at the time of registration: Aadhaar Card Driving License Health Insurance Smart Card issued under the scheme of Ministry of Labour Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA) Job Card O f f i c i a l i d e n t i t y cards issued to MPs/MLAs/ MLCs PAN Card
Passbooks issued by Bank/Post Office Passport Pension Document S e r v i c e I d e n t i t y Card issued to employees by Central/ State Govt./ Public Limited Companies Voter ID People with comorbidities will have to carry the certificate of comorbidities, in the format shared in the MOHFW website by a registered medical practitioner. Q. Which COVID-19 vaccines are licensed in India? T w o va c c i n e s we r e granted emergency use authorization by the Central Drugs Standard Control Organization (CDSCO) in India, Covishield® (AstraZeneca’s vaccine manufactured by Serum Institute of India) and Covaxin® (manufactured by Bharat Biotech Limited). Sputnik - V has been granted EUA in the month of April 2021.\ Q. Does this vaccine provide herd immunity? When an increasing number of people get vaccinated in the community, indirect protection through herd immunity develops. The percentage of people who need to be immune in order to achieve herd immunity varies with each disease. For example, its 95% for measles, however the proportion of the population that must be vaccinated against COVID-19 to begin inducing herd immunity is not known. Prevention of corruption is possible only by purification of democracy
T
oday corruption has taken its roots in the country. Honesty and morality have become like a deceitful deer. As a result, our work culture has contaminated and development projects have come to a standstill. To annihilate this incurable disease, the government should make a separate strict law at the national level. The law for eradicating corruption will be completely effective and corruption will be uprooted, it cannot be guaranteed. It is not that corruption takes place only by escaping the law; corruption also takes place under the guise of law. In this circumstance, if such a law is made, then care has to be taken that no such hole should be left in it so that the corrupt can escape. Although there are already many sections in the Indian Penal Code,1860 and the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988 (as amended from time to time) to deal with the corrupt, but they are not proving to be as effective. It is proved by ex-
perience that this infectious disease is not going to be completely destroyed by making laws or shouting ‘corruption-corruption’. It requires determination, fair initiative and strict enforcement of the law. There is no doubt that the disease of corruption runs from top to bottom. So, keeping a close eye on the bureaucracy alone will not be sufficient. Just as the cleaning of Gangotri is necessary for cleaning the Ganges, in the same way it is not possible to curb corruption without the purification of democracy. In the elections, instead of social service, the emergence of money power and lathi system has given corruption the form of unbridled horse and loose half. Power and corruption have become two sides of the same coin. Is it hidden from anyone that how the person who used to walk on foot till yesterday, becomes the owner of wealth and immense opulence as he establishes his steps in the
corridor of the power politics? For the eradication of corruption, numerous commissions headed by Saryu Prasad, S. R. Das, M. C. Chagla, T. L. Venkatram, Justice Dutta and others were formed from time to time in the country. All of them in their reports brought many of the then heavyweight leaders in the dock of horrific allegations of corruption, but political gains and self-interest were given priority and those people were left free. Instead of being punished, such people were made participants of the power and were placed on high rugs. It is not that any particular party has done this work. Whichever party came to power, even if it stemmed from the struggle and mass revolution against corruption, unemployment and dictatorship, it also did the same thing. In such a situation, the morale of the corrupt increased instead of decreasing. As a result the disease, which was limited to certain
pockets earlier, has spread from top to bottom like the Amarbel today. From the smallest to highest positions of the state, the hands of most are engulfed in corruption. There is an urgent need to create a nationwide environment to eradicate corruption completely. Political leaderships should declare without discrimination that there will be no place in their party for the corrupt or its patrons. What is happening today ? The people of the ruling party, whom the opposition did not get tired of calling the ‘corrupt’ today; the saga of their penance and sacrifice is being sung by inducting the same people in the opposition parties. As long as this obscene policy is in place, neither corruption will be curbed nor anything will happen to the oppressors. Only government efforts towards eradicating corruption cannot be trusted, because corruption is in every sphere of the society. The responsibility of its abolition cannot be left to the government

emory is a precarious thing. Things it keeps are independent of its master. But it is certain that if its master has been through an intense experience, the probability of it being there for a longer time is certain. The same is not true with public memory. It is short and is getting shorter every passing day. That is because we are bombarded with information from the moment we wake up to the moment we fall asleep. Blame the 24x7 news anchor always looking to break some news or the weight of the social media we carry in our smartphones. What was breaking news yesterday will not qualify for living room discussion today. Our attention span is getting shorter by the day. Anything new and loud has a wow affect and our young generation is caught in its whirlpool. Imagine happiness being linked to the likes on your Instagram post. Do I need to say more? The reason I am saying all this is because I
have been bombarded with questions by the under-30 generation regarding the ‘Buy now and pay later’ schemes doing the rounds now. Buy now, pay later (BYPL) has particularly found a following among frequent users of e-commerce giants like Amazon and Flipkart. What is it? Is it a smart move to go about? Or is it a trap? Let’s learn: BYPL is a scheme whereby a consumer can purchase a product and enjoy an interest-free period and then pay later in three to four instalments. This scheme has become very popular with millennials who normally lack credit history or with people without credit cards. For a first-time buyer, you have to get a KYC and if approved, you are eligible for the scheme. The lending platform looks for your purchase history and decides on your eligibility. It also checks your social media accounts. The mechanism settles the amount outright with the merchant, giving you access to the credits. The interest-free pe-
riod lasts from anywhere between 15 to 45 days, and the credit limit is normally from Rs. 500 to Rs. 30,000. If you pay within the credit-free period, you don’t pay anything extra. But if you miss the creditfree period, you will end up paying interest for the unpaid amount. You may also have to pay a late fee which is normally high. And read this carefully: any payment delay will be reported to the credit bureau and this will harm your future credit worthiness. That means if you fail now and many years from today if you apply for a car or home loan, you will face problem. The question is, why BNPL? Credit cards already offer delayed payments. So, why or when should you go for BNPL schemes? Let’s compare BNPL with credit cards. Firstly, not everyone has a credit card. To have a credit card, you have to go through the eligibility criteria. Also, the interest on a credit card is from 36 to 45 per cent annually. BNPL
offers an interest of around 30 per cent. But BNPL’s credit-free period is short, at 15 days, and credit cards have an interest-free period of 45 days. BNPL covers a larger number of consumers, who are normally out of the credit card spectrum. Credit cards offer reward points and offer a much higher credit limit, which is normally missing in BNPL schemes. To sum it up, BNPL is an attractive scheme to turn a big purchase into small amounts, periodically. But you must understand that you are writing your credit history with each purchase through BNPL. If you fail in repayment, you are making a dent in your future. And most of all, you should avoid the behavioural practice of taking credit on every purchase. If you can’t afford it, you better forget it. It’s a winner’s habit, not a loser’s. That latest smartphone in the ‘big billion sale’ can wait for all the good reasons. institutions alone. Unless the common man of the nation will stand against this sin and crime, it is not possible to get rid of it. Just as the oppressor as well as the victim of atrocities is equally guilty, in the same way the person who helps in corruption is no less guilty. Today, along with the law, there is a need to awaken the public consciousness not only at the social level against the corruption prevailing in the society and system, but there is also a need for such dedicated people who can do this work like a mission. The Central Government should also organize such fair and effective agencies which are capable of bringing punishment to the corrupt without any discrimination. It cannot be expected from the agencies of the State Governments alone that they can take from lowest to highest positions within the ambit of the Prevention of Corruption Act. Er. Improvement of the Dmp-Khm public transportation.
Sir,
I, as a commoner, solely rely on public transportation to get around our state. Through this letter in your esteemed local daily column, today I would like to highlight some issues that are related to the public transport (NST) that are severely affecting the regular commuters like me. The Nagaland State Transport as a Department of the State Government of Nagaland was set up on 18.12.1964 with the objective to provide passenger bus services as a public utility in order to accelerate the process of socio-economic development of the hill State. Dimapur being the most populated district and Kohima being the capital and a smart city of our state has only few handful of NST buses that aren’t sufficient for public anymore. A total of 5 deplorable buses are currently in service that are being repaired every now and then which even threatens the safety and security of the general public. Estimated around 7lakhs of population between the two cities, it is safe to say that the highest commutation is done between the two major cities of our state daily. Regardless of the sufferings endured by the public/commoners, the concern authorities have failed to provide sufficient buses for a long period of time. Therefore, it is my humble request to the concern authority to kindly provide additional buses and services to the citizens of both cities who are regularly commuting and suffering from insufficient public transportation which are due from the department of NST. Nighato K Rochill Reader’s note: Articles or letters published in any of the columns do not reflect the view of this newspaper nor that of the Editor in any manner.
JHANSI (UP), NOV 19 (PTI): Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday inaugurated or laid the foundations of multiple development projects worth over Rs 3,425 crore to expedite growth of the economically backward Bundelkhand region of Uttar Pradesh. At an event in Jhansi in the poll-bound state, he laid the foundation of a 600-megawatt Ultra Mega Solar Power Park. The park is being constructed at a cost of over Rs 3,013 crore and will help provide cheaper electricity and grid stability. He also laid the foundation of a Rs 400-crore project at the Jhansi node of Uttar Pradesh Defence Industrial Corridor. The project is being executed by Bharat Dynamics Ltd for setting up a plant to produce propulsion systems for antitank guided missiles. The prime minister also inaugurated Atal Ekta Park in Jhansi. Named after former prime minister Atal Bihari
Narendra Modi (PTI)
Vajpayee, the park has been built at a cost of over Rs 12 crore, and is spread over an area of about 40,000 square metre. The park will house a library as well as a statue of Vajpayee. The statue has been built by renowned sculptor Ram Sutar, the man behind the Statue of Unity, according to the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO). The grand ceremony was organised in the precincts of Jhansi Fort on the birthday of Rani Lakshmi Bai, the epitome of bravery and courage and a great National icon of Rashtra Raksha and India’s Independence struggle. Online startups’ listings make a killing, leave behind legacy cos NEW DELHI, NOV 19 (IANS): Expectations of further digitisation-led economic growth has propelled the market valuations of just-listed startups in comparison to legacy-cum-brick and mortar businesses, analysts said. Accordingly, valuation of firms such as PB Fintech (PolicyBazar), Zomato and Nykaa, among others, have risen multifold times from their offer price. Besides, most of these startups’ market valuation has crossed the milestone of Rs 1 lakh crore. “New generation businesses are expensive because of their high growth potentials in this essentially rising digital world. Henceforth, it is fair to accept that such new-age companies will be valued and traded much higher than the old business models,” said Vinod Nair, Head of Research at Geojit Financial Services. However, he said that one needs to understand that this huge gap in valuations is based on a belief that they will evolve stronger, increase penetration, grow their brands faster,
and ultimately become profitable. “Else, they have the risk to end-up as a cashgulping equipment, destroying the commercial system of the respective industry. Not all will rise as a winner from the new-age companies,” Nair said. “The old businesses are also expected to develop and integrate with new technology in the future. Accordingly, we can also notice that not all from the 2020 and 2021 listed tech-based companies have performed great,” he added. According to Parth Nyati, Founder of Tradingo: “We know that the digital economy is witnessing exponential growth across the globe where India is in a leading position. “The startup ecosystem is changing in India and many people think that the country has the potential to produce big tech companies like what the US and China did in the past. Therefore, there is a frenzy for new-age business IPOs in India and most of the promoters want to cash in on this euphoria with unrealistic valuations.”
Raksha Samarpan Parv’ that began on Wednesday concluded with the participation of Modi. In a major push to “Aatmanirbhar Bharat” programme in the defence sector, the prime minister formally handed over indigenously designed and developed defence equipment to the three chiefs of armed forces in Jhansi. At the ceremony, Modi formally gave light combat aircraft (LCH) designed and developed by Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) to the Air Force chief, drones and UAVs built by Indian startups to the Army chief, and the DRDO-designed and Bharat Electronics Limited-manufactured advanced electronic warfare suite for naval ships to the Navy chief. At an event in Mahoba earlier in the day, the prime minister inaugurated more than Rs 3,240 crore worth of projects aimed at ending water scarcity for farmers in the parched Bundelkhand region.
AMARAVATI, NOV 19 (PTI): A heavy downpour of up to 20 cm wrecked havoc in three Rayalaseema districts and one south coastal district in Andhra Pradesh, leaving at least eight people dead on Friday. Twelve people were still reported missing in Kadapa district, while the Indian Air Force, SDRF and Fire Services personnel rescued tens of people caught in the flash floods. Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke to Chief Minister Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy over phone and enquired about the situation and promised all help to the
state. The Chief Minister will undertake an aerial survey of the flood-hit districts on Saturday, the CMO said in a release. Swollen rivers and rivulets caused a huge deluge in the districts, cutting off roads at some places and throwing life out of gear. In many places, roads turned into canals and swept vehicles away. Though the Tirupati International Airport at Renigunta was re-opened for flight operations on Friday, the two ghat roads to Tirumala Hills remained shut. The stairway leading
JAIPUR, NOV 19 (IANS): The Rajasthan government on Friday convened an emergency meeting of officials concerned after the state registered a Covid death after over three months. The meeting, chaired by Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot, deliberated on measures to curb the rising cases. According to officials, Gehlot has decided to explore the possibility of applying a booster dose of Corona vaccine and write a letter to the Prime Minister in this regard. The officers have been asked to implement social distancing norms in the districts. They have also been instructed to conduct genome sequencing and sero survey. After the review meeting, Gehlot said: “We have decided to write to the Prime Minister to allow the third booster dose of Corona vaccine. After a year, now the booster dose is required to check the third wave. Will write to the PM to consider and approve the booster dose. Booster doses have been started in many countries. The Centre should arrange for it, he said. Having
Corona cases in schools can be dangerous, he said, adding that “We are keeping an eye on this. Everyone has to take precautions in this context. Corona protocol has to be followed.” On rising cases in Europe and Russia, the CM said: “Corona is spreading fiercely in Europe and Russia. Even beds are not available in countries like Germany and Russia. The WHO has said that 5 lakh people can die in Europe due to it. There is a belief that when Corona hits Europe, it comes to Asia after two months. The number of Corona has increased here too, so we have called a review meeting,” he added. A two-and-a half yearold child died of Corona on Wednesday and his report declared him Covid positive on Thursday. The state recorded 95 active cases on Thursday, which was under 50 till Diwali. Easing of restrictions in schools, colleges, wedding, cinema halls and allowing them to reopen with 100 per cent capacity has been taken easily leading to the surge, the officials said.
Chandrababu breaks down, vows to stay away from Assembly
AMARAVATI, NOV 19 (PTI): A sobbing Telugu Desam president N Chandrababu Naidu on Friday vowed to step into the Andhra Pradesh Legislative Assembly again only after returning to power. “Till then, we will go to the people and sort it out,” he told a press conference at the TDP headquarters here. The for mer Chief Minister, who hitherto had rarely shown any emotions overtly, broke down in the press conference and cried for a while, alleging that the ruling YSR Congress had been humiliating him no end. “This is a dharma poratam (just battle) against the atrocious rule of the YSRC. I will go to the people and seek their support. If people co-operate, I will strive to save the state,” the TDP chief said. Earlier in the state Legislative Assembly, the Leader of the Opposition said in an emotion-filled tone that the Jagan Mohan Reddy-led party had been continuously casting a slur on him for the past two-and-a-half years.

The Chief Minister asked the Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanam officials to make arrangements for free accommodation and food for the stranded pilgrims on the Hills. In Rajampeta constituency in Kadapa district, at least five people were killed in a flash flood in the Cheyyeru rivulet while 12 more were still missing. Kadapa Collector Vijaya Rama Raju told PTI that eight people in all were killed in the district in the floods. The conductor of a State Road Transport Corporation bus and two other passengers met with a watery grave in Kadapa district as the vehicle tilted in the flood. Two others in the bus were rescued, according to an official release. In neighbouring Anantapuramu district, 10 people stranded in the Chitravati river flood at Veldurthi village were rescued by the Indian Air Force personnel, who specially flew in from Yelahanka Air Force Station in Karnataka.
N Chandrababu Naidu
“I have been bearing the insults for the sake of people, but remained calm. Today, they have targeted even my wife. I always lived with honour and for honour. I can take it no more,” Chandrababu said. Though he continued to speak, Speaker Tammineni Seetaram cut the mike even as the ruling par ty members called Chandrababu’s remarks a “drama”. The former Chief Minister vent his frustration following an acrimonious exchange of words between the two sides in the House during a short discussion on the farm sector. Later, he held an impromptu meeting with his party legislators in his chamber, where he report-
Rly to resume serving cooked meals on trains NEW DELHI, NOV 19 (PTI): The Railway Board has issued an order to resume serving cooked meals to passengers on trains, a service that was discontinued due to COVID-19 restrictions. The Railway Board, in a letter on Friday, asked the Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) to resume the service. Ready-to-eat meals will also continue to be served to passengers, the Railway board also said. “In view of the restoration of normal train services, requirements of travelling passengers and easing of Covid lockdown restrictions in eateries, restaurants, hotels and such other places across the country, it has been decided by the Ministry of Railways to resume the services of cooked food in trains. Service of readyto-eat meals will also continue,” the letter stated. Earlier this month, the Railways had announced the running of normal trains, withdrawing the special tag which had been in place for the pandemic.
edly broke down. Stunned TDP legislators consoled Chandrababu, after which they all came back into the House. Chandrababu then announced his decision, but that did not go on record, even as he left in a huff. Chief Minister Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy, who later came into the House, said the Opposition leader’s behaviour and words were nothing but a drama. “Chandrababu only seeks to derive political mileage out of everything. It is very unfortunate. His drama was visible to all eyes, though I was not inside the House at the time,” Jagan observed. “Yes, Chandrababu Naidu’s condition, and that he is in frustration, is known not only to me, but also to everyone in the state. People of the state have openly rejected him. Even in his own Kuppam constituency, he, unimaginably, faced people’s rejection,” the Chief Minister remarked. He said the YSRC legislators did not speak anything about the (opposition leader’s) family members.
DRI seizes 80 kg smuggled gold from Delhi airport; Chinese national, 3 held NEW DELHI, NOV 19 (PTI): Over 80 kg gold worth nearly Rs 40 crore, being smuggled into the country by concealing it inside imported machinery parts, has been seized by DRI officials at the airport here, according to an official statement issued on Friday. Four foreign nationals -- two South Koreans, one Chinese and a Taiwanese – have been apprehended in the case, it said. Later, in a swift followup operation, further recovery of 5.409 kgs of foreignorigin gold smuggled into India adopting a similar modus operandi, was made from a Delhi-based jeweller, the statement issued by the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) said. The recovered gold, totally weighing 85.535 kgs, valued at approximately Rs 42 crore, has been seized, it said. In an intelligence operation code-named ‘molten metal’, several Indian and foreign (Chinese, Taiwanese, South-Korean) nationals suspected to be indulging in smuggling gold into India
Muslim leaders urge Centre to withdraw CAA NEW DELHI, NOV 19 (IANS): After Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced to repel the three farm laws, Muslim leaders on Friday demanded the withdrawl of the contentious Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA). The CAA is mainly being opposed by the people from the Muslim community, and some other sections of the society, alleging that the Act is discriminatory in nature. Syed Sadatullah Hussaini, President, Jamaate-Islami Hind, said: “We now urge the government to also look at the other anti-people and anti-Constitutional laws like CAA-NRC etc., and ensure that they too are withdrawn at the earliest. We feel delighted that Prime Minister Narendra Modi has finally acceded to the demands of the farmers. Had it been done earlier, the losses could have been averted.” Welcoming the decision to repeal the three farm laws, the chief of Jamiat Ulama-e-Hind, Arshad Madani, said in a statement: “The CAA movement encouraged the farmers to protest against the farm laws.
from Hong Kong using the air cargo route, were identified, the DRI said. The intelligence indicated that the gold smuggled in the form of machinery parts was being melted and moulded into bar/cylinder shapes before being disposed of in the local market, it said. Acting upon the said intelligence, DRI officers examined an import consignment at the air cargo complex of the Indira Gandhi International (IGI) airport here. “During the examination, the consignment was found to contain electroplating machines fitted with transformers. The ‘EI’ laminates of the transformers were found to have been made of gold coated with nickel, essentially to hide the identity of the gold,” the statement said. Approximately, 1 kg of gold was recovered from each of the 80 imported electroplating machines, it said. Further, during search operations conducted in several rented properties in Chattarpur and Gurgaon, four foreign nationals (two
from South Korea and one each from China and Taiwan) were found to be using sophisticated metallurgical techniques to convert the smuggled gold in the form of ‘EI’ laminates into bar/ cylindrical form for further distribution, the probe agency said. These activities were being conducted by the foreign nationals in rented farmhouses/apartments in plush localities in South Delhi and Gurgaon, and extreme precautions were taken to keep the illegal nature of their activities hidden even from their immediate neighbours, the DRI said. “The four foreign nationals involved in the smuggling activities have been apprehended and are being questioned,” it said. During questioning, it has been revealed that two of the foreign nationals had stuck up a close relationship while being behind bars for their previous offenses of gold smuggling, the statement said, adding that “further investigation is in progress”.
Varun Gandhi likely to meet Mamata, fuels switch talks
KO L K ATA , N OV 1 9 (IANS): After Sushmita Dev, Babul Supriyo, Luizinho Faleiro and Leander Paes, there are strong indications that BJP MP Varun Gandhi might jump ship and join theTMC. It is likely that Varun Gandhi might meet West Bengal Chief minister Mamata Banerjee during the latter’s visit to the national capital next week. Though there has been no official confirmation about Maneka Gandhi’s son joining the Trinamool, according to a senior party leader, the Chief Minister’s visit to Delhi next week is going to be ‘very significant’ and might have some ‘surprises’ as well. However, it is still not clear whether the BJP leader will join the Trinamool during Banerjee’s Delhi visit, or later. Without making any direct statement on the matter, a senior Trinamool leader said, “Leaders who are angry with the BJP, but have no way to go to the Congress, are contacting Trinamool. At the moment, it is clear that Mamata and Trinamool can play the biggest role in stopping Modi.” Recently, BJP had
Varun Gandhi
dropped Varun and his mother Maneka Gandhi from the party’s national working committee, and the Gandhi family junior is reportedly looking for a political platform. Var un Gandhi had also condemned the killing of farmers at Lakhimpur Kheri, indicating that his ties with the saffron camp have turned sour. Political experts believe that cornered by the BJP, he would be looking for a stable platform and in that case, TMC could be the best alternative. There are also indications that Danish Ali, who had switched to the BSP from JD-S in 2019, might join Trinamool because of his differences with party supremo Mayawati. Last year, Mayawati had removed Ali from the post of LS leader due to differences with him.
Extreme flooding at Tirupati after torrential rains Thursday. He spoke to Chittoor district collector M Hari Narayanan and asked him to closely monitor the water levels, according to the statement by the chief minister’s office. Meanwhile, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted heavy rainfall for parts of Andhra Pradesh on Friday, including Anantapur and Kadapa districts.
According to the weather department, the depression in the Bay of Bengal has completely crossed the coast near the south of Chennai and is moving into the Anantapur-Bengaluru belt. Along with Andhra Pradesh, heavy to very heavy rainfall is also predicted for neighbouring Tamil Nadu and Puducherry on Friday.

T I RU PAT I , N OV 1 9 (AGENCIES): Water levels in and around several areas of Tirupati, Tirumala and the rest of the Chittoor district have increased to alarming levels, leading to residents moving from their homes to seek safety. The Japali Anjaneya Swamy temple on Tirumala was inundated and idol of the God submerged. Following this, the Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanam officials made arrangements for free food and accommodation for the pilgrims who were stranded on the holy hills.
The two ghat roads leading to the Tirumala Hills were closed for traffic following the flood and landslides. The pedestrian stairway leading to the temple from Alipiri was also closed down, reported news agency PTI. Flight operations were hampered in the city as the Tirupati International Airport at Renigunta also remained inundated, forcing the authorities to stop the landing of incoming aircraft, it fuether said. Akato: NSCN (R) does not have much regions. We have only few regions. However, we did not invite the Konyak region in the meeting because we did not want to split the Konyak people. That is the magnanimity we have shown. Besides Konyak region, all the other existing regions attended the meeting today and extended their support. We have the support of the majority. NP: What is the current strength of your group? Akato: We have about 2,000 members or more. These includes UT-1 and majority of regional authorities. NP: What is the objective of your group? Akato: To bring good things for our people and expedite the Naga solution. The split is not for personal profit but for the common good of our government and the people.

I am not starting a new outfit. However, if they do not accept us, then I have to go for another alternative. NP: You mentioned that your group is part of NNPGs. So, do you support the November 17, 2017 agreement signed between GoI and NNPGs? Akato: As of now yes. NP: When are you likely to appoint/elect vice president and general secretary? Akato: We will be convening joint council meeting soon. The house will then elect/appoint suitable people. NP: How many NSCN (R) regions have extended support to your leadership?

Covid: Austria reimposes full lockdown VEINNA, NOV 19 (IANS): Barely a week after imposing a lockdown on the unvaccinated, Austria on Friday announced a full national Covid-19 lockdown starting next week. Austria became the first country in the European Union to take such a measure in the face of the Covid-19 resurgence. Besides, it has also made vaccination mandatory from February 1, Euronews reported. The new measures announced by Chancellor Alexander Schallenberg on Friday morning will come into effect initially for 10 days starting Monday. Most stores will close, and cultural events will be cancelled. “We have to look reality in the face,” Schallenberg was quoted as saying at a news conference. “We do not want a fifth wave. Nor do we want a sixth or seventh wave,” the Chancellor said, as reported by public broadcaster ORF. After 10 days, the effects will be assessed and if Covid cases don’t drop sufficiently, the lockdown can be extended to a maximum of 20 days. However, according to Austria’s Health Minister, schools would remain open

for those who need to go there, but all parents have been asked to keep their children at home if possible. The lockdown comes as Covid infections soared in Austria in recent weeks. Daily case numbers have trebled in November, touching over 15,000 on Thursday. According to the latest figures, the incidence rate was 990.7 cases per 100,000 people in the past week, and Health Minister Wolfgang Mackstein said imposing a lockdown was the “last resort”. The country’s per capita infection rate is also the highest so far this year. Hospitals have been overwhelmed with many new Covid patients, and deaths
have been rising again, the report said. Last Monday, Vienna had announced a nationwide lockdown for about two million unvaccinated people. Under this, people aged 12 years and older were banned from going outside except for essential activities such as work, attending classes, essential shopping, or going for a walk. The country has 65 per cent people fully vaccinated against Covid-19 -- one of the lowest rates in Western Europe. Earlier this month, the World Health Organization (WHO) had warned that as Covid cases continue to mount in Europe and Central Asia, the regions are
China’s hypersonic missile ‘went around the world’ in July: top US military official
The test marked the first time any country had sent a hypersonic weapon fully around the Earth.
WASHINGTON/BEIJING, NOV 19 (PTI): China might one day be able to launch a surprise nuclear attack on the United States, the second highest-ranking American military officer has warned as he shed new details of Beijing’s hypersonic weapons test in July, which sent a missile around the world at more than five times the speed of sound. “They launched a
long-range missile,” General John Hyten, the vice chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff told CBS News while commenting on China’s hypersonic weapons test on July 27. “It went around the world, dropped off a hypersonic glide vehicle that glided all the way back to China, that impacted a target in China,” he said on Tuesday. When asked if the
missile hit the target, Hyten said, “Close enough.” China has denied that it carried out a hypersonic missile test, saying it was testing a reusable spacecraft. Though the Chinese weapon missed its target by several kilometers, according to the Financial Times, the test marked the first time any country had sent a hypersonic weapon fully around the Earth. Hypersonic weapons travel at more than five times the speed of sound, making it difficult for radars to detect. Combined with hundreds of new missile silos China is building, Hyten believes China could one day have the capability to launch a surprise nuclear attack on the US. “They look like a firstuse weapon,” Hyten told CBS News. “That’s what those weapons look like to me.”
China threatens Lithuania over Taiwan office opening BEIJING, NOV 19 (AP): China on Friday threatened to retaliate against Lithuania after the Baltic nation allowed Taiwan to open a representative office in its capital, Vilnius. Fo r e i g n M i n i s t r y spokesperson Zhao Lijian said Lithuania would “reap what it sows,” but gave no details. Zhao described Lithuania’s move as an “egregious act” that “grossly interferes” in China’s internal affairs. T h e o f f i c e, w h i c h opened Thursday, bears the name Taiwan rather than
“Chinese Taipei,” which is used by the International Olympic Committee and many foreign nations to avoid offending China, which claims the self-governing island democracy as its own territory. Taiwan has just 15 formal diplomatic allies, but maintains informal ties with all major nations through trade offices that act as de facto embassies, including in the United States and Japan. It wasn’t clear what actions China plans to take in response to the opening of the office. Beijing
has already recalled its ambassador from Vilnius and expelled the Lithuanian ambassador. Lithuania plans to open a representative office in Taipei by the end of the year and has withdrawn from the “17 plus one” arrangement launched by China to bind it closer to countries in Eastern Europe. China’s threat underscores its extreme sensitivity to any challenge to what it considers its “core interests,” as it presses ahead with its increasingly assertive foreign policy.

likely to see about 500,000 additional deaths before February 1. Hans Kluge, WHO’s European Regional Director, attributed the increased risk to low mask use, vaccine hesitancy and spread of the more transmissible Delta variant. Many other European countries are also planning to reimpose restrictions in the wake of a steep rise in the number of cases, the BBC reported. Slovakia Prime Minister Eduard Heger has announced what he called a lockdown for the unvaccinated starting Monday. The country had reported a record 8,342 cases on Wednesday. The Czech government is also limiting access to a variety of services. The Netherlands introduced a partial lockdown last weekend. German leaders have also agreed to introduce restrictions for unvaccinated people in areas with high Covid hospital admissions that would affect 12 of Germany’s 16 states, the report said. Daily infections had hit a new German record of 52,826 on Wednesday.
Disease control chief: First batch of Russia’s ‘Germany is one big outbreak’ aid arrives in Afghanistan
Lothar Wieler
BERLIN, NOV 19 (AP): The head of Germany’s disease control agency said Friday that the country has entered into a “nationwide state of emergency” because of surging coronavirus infections. Lothar Wieler, the head of the Robert Koch Institute, said regular medical care cannot be guaranteed anymore in some parts of the country because hospitals and intensive care wards are overstretched. He called for urgent additional measures to tackle the rise in COVID-19 cases, which topped 50,000 for the third day running. “All of Germany is one big outbreak,” Wieler told reporters in Berlin. “This is a nationwide state of emergency. We need to pull the emergency brake.” His comments came as
Japan proposes record package to fix economy TOKYO, NOV 19 (AP): Japan’s prime minister outlined Friday a record 56 trillion yen, or $490 billion stimulus package, including cash handouts and aid to ailing businesses, to help the economy out of the doldrums worsened by the coronavirus pandemic. “The package has more than enough content and scale to deliver a sense of security and hope to the people,” Kishida told reporters. The proposal from Kishida was set for Cabinet approval later in the day but still needs parliamentary approval. The plan includes doling out 100,000 yen ($880) each in monetary assistance to those 18 years or younger, and aid for ailing businesses, Kishida and other politicians said.
the upper house of parliament on Friday approved new measures to control the outbreak proposed by the center-left alliance that emerged after the Sept. 26 national election. The measures include requirements for people to prove they are vaccinated, recently recovered from COVID-19 or have tested negative for the virus in order to access communal workplaces or public transport. Separately, outgoing Chancellor Angela Merkel agreed with the governors of Germany’s 16 states to introduce a new threshold linked to the number of hospital admissions of COVID-19 patients per 100,000 people over a seven-day period. Some states are also considering mandatory vaccinations for some professional groups such as medical staff and nursing home employees. Neighbouring Austria, which has also been hit by a surge in new cases, announced it would extend a nationwide lockdown to vaccinated people from Monday, and introduce compulsory vaccinations from February.
Afghan workers unload humanitarian aid donated by Russia at Kabul International Airport in Kabul, Afghanistan.
KABUL, NOV 19 (IANS): The first batch of Russia’s humanitarian aid has arrived in Afghanistan. Three planes carrying 36 tons of humanitarian aid landed at the Kabul airport on Thursday. The aid, including flour, cooking oil and blankets, has been handed over to Afghan officials from the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA). Expressing gratitude to Russia for the aid, the Afghan officials receiving the aid called on other nations to support the war-torn country at this moment when Afghans are facing food shortage, Xinhua news agency reported. Russia, according to a statement from the NDMA, will send 108 ton of humanitarian aid to Afghanistan in three rounds, with the first round arriving on Thursday morning and the remaining two in the near future.
Bennett thanks Erdogan for Israeli couple’s release
TEL AVIV, NOV 19 (IANS): In a phone call, Israeli Prime Minister Naftali Bennett thanked Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan for the release of an Israeli couple held in Istanbul over espionage suspicion. The phone call between the Israeli and Turkish leaders took place on Thursday night hours after the couple was released and returned to Israel, reports Xinhua news agency. Bennett’s office issued a statement saying that the Prime Minister thanked Erdogan “for his personal involvement” in the release of Mordi and Natali Oknin. Bennett said that the release

of the couple was “a solution to a humanitarian issue” and “noted favourably the communication axes between the countries,
which functioned efficiently and discreetly in times of crisis”. It was the first official conversation between Bennett, who was sworn-in in June, and Erdogan. Mordi and Natalie Oknin were arrested for espionage last weer after taking photos of the Ottoman-era Dolmabahce Palace in Istanbul while taking a tour on a ferry. Parts of the building are used as the presidential office. Earlier on Thursday, Bennett published on his Twitter account a photo of the couple hugging their son and daughter at the exit of the plane, and wrote: “Welcome home.”
Joe Biden praises Canada, Mexico as leaders discuss strains
WASHINGTON, NOV 19 (AP): Reviving three-way North American summitry after a five-year break, President Joe Biden on Thursday joined with the leaders of Canada and Mexico to declare their nations can work together and prove “democracies can deliver” even as they sort out differences on key issues. But as Biden, along with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, spoke of their mutual respect, the three leaders also found themselves dealing with fresh strains on trade, immigration, climate change, and other matters.
“We can meet all the challenges if we just take the time to speak to one another, by working together,” said Biden, who hosted the North American neighbours for what had been a near-annual tradition in the decade before President Donald Trump came to office. It was a day of full-on diplomacy that required careful choreography as Trudeau and Lopez Obrador each met separately with Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris before gathering for a three-way conversation in the East Room that featured a language mix of English, French, and Spanish. As they played up the closeness of the alliance,

points of tension were also clear. They include differences between Washington and Ottawa over proposed tax incentives that would benefit U.S. electric car auto manufacturers, frustration from López Obrador that the U.S. isn’t moving to issue

No, COVID-19 vaccines won’t make you infertile
T
he World Health Organization has warned that the globe is dealing with two pandemics. One is the spread of the coronavirus, but the other, equally dangerous, is the spread of misinformation and disinformation. False or misleading information has sprung up about the virus, treatments, vaccines, masks and just about every other aspect of the pandemic (SN: 5/6/21). Some of these lies or half-truths are purposefully used by a few people to help sell vitamin supplements, books, and DVDs, or to boost their own influence. But the vast majority of people may have heard misinformation from a friend or relative, seen it on social media or heard it repeated by celebrities or politicians. In a survey of adults in the United States conducted by the Kaiser Family Foundation, nearly 8 in 10 people believe or aren’t sure about the truthfulness of at least one common falsehood about the pandemic. About 46 percent of people believe or are unsure about one to three falsehoods related to the pandemic, and 32 percent believe or are uncertain whether four or more erroneous statements are true
or false. Only 22 percent of adults in the survey didn’t believe any of the false statements. One particularly pernicious rumor is that coronavirus vaccines cause infertility. In the survey, 8 percent of people said they believe that false statement. Another 23 percent of people surveyed weren’t sure whether studies had shown a link between the vaccines and infertility. And it doesn’t help people tell truth from fiction when celebrities spread incorrect information. Recently, the Green Bay Packers’ quarterback Aaron Rodgers said he lied about being vaccinated because of concerns that the COVID-19 vaccine may cause infertility, as People magazine reports. That follows rapper Nicki Minaj’s tweeting that her cousin’s friend in Trinidad had suf-
fered swollen testicles after getting the vaccine. That claim was disputed by the health minister of Trinidad and Tobago, according to CNN. It’s not just athletes and celebrities spreading false rumors about COVID-19 vaccines and infertility, however. That misinformation is everywhere. In Kibera, an informal settlement in Kenya’s capital of Nairobi, community health volunteers hear two main concerns about getting the vaccine: “Can I have children after this?” and “Can I have the vaccine if I have diabetes or cancer [or other health problems]?” There’s a split between who is asking those questions, says Eddah Ogogo, the primary healthcare program coordinator for the international nonprofit
organization CFK Africa that is helping coordinate vaccine distribution. “The younger population [is] scared about infertility. The older population is scared about comorbidities,” she says. The easier conversation to have is reassuring people that the vaccine won’t interfere with their medications and may help those with health problems avoid the most serious complications of COVID-19. But, says Ogogo, “when it comes to fertility, there are those who get convinced. They say, ‘Wow! That’s good to know’,” and they get their shot. And then, “there are those who say, ‘I’ll keep asking around and when I get the information I want I will come [get vaccinated].’” Just under 7 percent of adults in Kenya are fully vaccinated, mostly due to lack of access to vaccines, but misinformation plays a role too, Ogogo says (SN: 2/26/21). Local and global news outlets alike often make the disclaimer that there is no evidence that the COVID-19 vaccines cause infertility. But that lacklustre response leaves the door open for misinterpretation or rumors of a cover-up. In
fact, there is evidence that the vaccines do not cause infertility. One study found that there was no difference in pregnancy rates after embryo transfers in women who had antibodies against the coronavirus from vaccination or infection compared with women who had no antibodies, researchers reported in Fertility and Sterility Reports in September. In clinical trials testing the vaccines, accidental pregnancies happened in both the vaccine group and the unvaccinated control group at similar rates, data posted in the April Nature Reviews Immunology show. Miscarriage rates were also similar, researchers reported in a Lancet study published October 21 look at pregnancies in the AstraZeneca vaccine trial. Real-world data from Israel of more than 15,000 pregnant women also shows the benefits of the vaccine. About half of the pregnant people were vaccinated with the vaccine from Pfizer and its German partner BioNTech. Only about 2 percent got infected with the coronavirus — mostly between their first and second shots. But among unvaccinated women, the infection rate continued
to climb, reaching about 4 percent by the end of the study, suggesting that vaccination can prevent infection during pregnancy, researchers reported in July in JAMA. That’s good news because pregnant women who get COVID-19 are more likely to deliver their babies prematurely and may be admitted to the intensive care unit or die at a higher rate than uninfected women, a study of studies published last year in the British Medical Journal found. And men who get COVID-19 may have lower levels of testosterone and low sperm counts after infection, and may be more likely to have erectile dysfunction, three studies show. It’s not clear whether any of those problems continue long-term. But those are consequences of COVID-19, not the vaccines. The Pfizer mRNA vaccine did not harm sperm production, researchers reported in June in JAMA, adding to the mounting evidence that vaccines are safe. That fact may eventually percolate down to people who are scared that getting the vaccine will damage their fertility. (By Tina Hesman Saey)

‘Emotionally brilliant’: singer Adele releases new album ‘30’
M
usic star Adele released her first album in six years on Friday, winning over critics and fans alike with the record she said she made to explain her divorce to her young son. The hotly-anticipated “30” is the fourth studio album by the Briton, whose chart-topping ballads about break-ups, regrets and nostalgia have made her one of the most successful singersongwriters of all time. In their reviews, critics praised Adele’s honesty on the album, which she has described as “sensitive” and where the notoriously private singer opens up with touching voice notes recorded with her son Angelo, 9. “She’s never sounded more ferocious than she does on ‘30’ - more alive to her own feelings, more virtuosic at shaping them into songs in the key of her own damn life,” Rolling Stone writer Rob Sheffield said in his five-star review, adding the album
was Adele’s best so far. “30” follows the Grammy Award winning “25” and, like her previous albums, is named after a milestone age in the “Someone Like You” and “Hello” singer’s life. Adele announced her split from her husband Simon Konecki in 2019. While not all critics were as lavish in their reviews, they welcomed different offerings from the 33-year-old, whose song titles on the album include “I Drink Wine” and “All Night Parking”. “This devastating level of honesty means that, despite its more experimental moments, ‘30’ still winds up feeling like trademark Adele, in its own way, most of the time,” El Hunt wrote on music website NME. A
g roup of Cuban musicians including reggaeton duo Gente de Zona on Thursday won Song of the Year in the 2021 Latin Grammy Awards for ‘Patria y Vida,’ a defiant hip-hop song that has become the anthem of Cuba’s anti-government protest movement. Gente de Zona, Yotuel of hip-hop band Orishas fame and singer-songwriter Descemer Bueno collaborated on the song with two rappers in Cuba, Maykel Osorbo and El Funky, who are part of a dissident artists’ collective on the communistrun island. The group performed on stage in Las Vegas dressed in white in a show of solidarity with fellow activists in Cuba. ‘Patria y Vida’ also won best urban song of the year in the awards. “This is for my country, for freedom of expression,
and for the freedom of the Cubans,” said singer Bueno after receiving the best urban song award early in the night. The winning song’s title, “Homeland and Life,” is a play on the long-standing Cuban mantra “Patria o Muerte” (“Homeland or Death”) emblazoned on walls and billboards across the island nation since Fidel Castro’s 1959 leftist revolution. The lyrics refer to ideological intolerance, food shortages and the exodus of young Cubans who see no future on the island. The song struck a nerve in Cuba. The slogan ‘Patria y Vida’ was chanted by protesters who took to the streets on July 11 this year for rallies believed to be the largest since Castro’s revolution. Government media has said the song miscontrues
the Cuban reality, and officials blame the nation’s economic woes largely on the Cold War-era U.S. embargo. ‘Patria y Vida’ later became a rallying cry for protests planned for Nov. 15, but those demonstrations fizzled under government pressure, and few Cubans took to the streets. One of the group’s members, Maykel Osorbo, who was jailed earlier this year in Cuba, was unable to attend the ceremony. Yotuel, who spoke on behalf of the group after receiving the song of the year award, dedicated the prize to Osorbo. “To a free Cuba, to Maykal Osorbo, and let us all say, ‘Patria y Vida,’ Yotuel said before a cheering crowd. Pakistan beat Bangladesh by four wickets in first T20I
DHAKA, NOV 19 (PTI): Pakistan recovered from a precarious 24-4 to beat Bangladesh by four wickets on Friday in the first of their three Twenty20s. The match was in the balance with three overs to go, then Shadab Khan and Mohammad Nawaz hit two sixes each and Pakistan reached 132-6 in 19.2 overs, knocking off Bangladesh’s 127-7. Fakhar Zaman and Khushdil Shah launched Pakistan’s recovery with a 56-run partnership for the fifth wicket. They scored 34 each, removed in quick succession when Fakhar chased a wide delivery of fast bowler Taskin Ahmed to edge to wicketkeeper Nurul Hasan, and Khushdil was undone by a slower ball outside off by pacer Shoriful Islam. With the visitors needing 32 runs in the last three overs, Shadab Khan and Mohammad Nawaz pulled off a blitz to break Bangladesh’s stranglehold. Shadab struck an unbeaten 21 off 10, hitting the winning six by slogsweeping legspinner Aminul

Islam over deep midwicket. Aminul, one of the home team’s specialist bowlers, only came to bowl in the last over when Pakistan needed two runs for the victory. Nawaz was unbeaten on 18 off 8. Pakistan made a cautious start on the slow pitch before fast bowler Mustafizur Rahman rattled the stumps of Mohammad
Rizwan for 11. Captain Babar Azam dragged one on to his stump on 7, but Bangladesh failed to keep up that pressure to the end. The damage was ultimately done when it was restricted to 127-7, continuing a poor batting record that haunted Bangladesh in the T20 World Cup. The team has lost six straight T20s.
Paine steps down as Aus captain after ‘sexting’ scandal
Kevin De Bruyne tests Covid positive
NEW DELHI, NOV 19 (AGENCIES): Tim Paine resigns as Australia’s Test captain weeks ahead of Ashes after it emerges that he is being investigated for sexting scandal. The bombshell announcement has thrown Australia’s Ashes defence into chaos less than three weeks out from the series opener. Paine announced his resignation from the captaincy at a press conference in Hobart on Friday afternoon, following revelations of a ‘sexting’ incident involving a former Cricket Tasmania employee in 2017, Indian Express reported. Re por ts claimed a Cricket Tasmania female employee was offended by “Mr Paine’s sexually explicit, unwelcome and unsolicited photograph of his genitals in addition to the graphic sexual comments.” Paine will, however, continue to be a part of the Australian team. “It’s an incredibly difficult decision but the right one for me, my family and cricket,” Paine said. “Although exonerated I deeply regretted in incident at a time and I do so today. I spoke to my wife and family at a time and enormously

grateful for their forgiveness and support,” he added. Cricket Australia’s statement said its board had accepted Paine’s resignation and will look to appoint a new test captain. “Tim felt it was in the best interests of his family and Australian cricket to take this decision to step down as captain,” CA board chairman Richard Freudenstein said. “While the board acknowledges an investigation cleared Tim of any breach of the code of conduct regarding this matter some years ago, we respect his decision. “CA does not condone this type of language or behavior. Despite the mistake he made, Tim has been an exceptional leader since his appointment and the board thanks him for his distinguished service.”
L O N D O N, N OV 1 9 (IANS): Manchester City midfielder Kevin De Bruyne has tested positive for coronavirus while on international duty with Belgium, informed City manager Pep Guardiola on Friday. De Bruyne, who will miss City’s trip to Everton on Sunday, returned a positive test during the international break after playing in both of Belgium’s World Cup qualifiers against Estonia and Wales. Guardiola said, “Kevin De Bruyne is self-isolating for 10 days and will miss the matches against Everton and Paris SaintGermain.” Guardiola said he was told two days ago about the positive test. “Forget about fitness and momentum, he’s positive, now he has to recover well -- that’s more important than a person being positive,” Guardiola said. “We found out two days ago, he’s here. Forget about fitness and momentum, he’s positive, now he has to recover. We have to be careful, people are dying from Covid. He’s vaccinated so hopefully he will be okay,’ Guardiola added.

New Zealand don’t have Australia ‘phobia’: Hesson AUCKLAND, NOV 19 (PTI): Denying claims that New Zealand have a “phobia “of facing their Trans-Tasman rivals, former coach Mike Hesson said Australia are simply good at countering swing bowling, something that India struggle with. New Zealand lost the T20 World Cup final to Australia last week. It was reminiscent to their 2015 ODI World Cup final’s defeat to the same opponent. “I guess we’ve only really had two big occasions haven’t we (recently), the 2015 World Cup and this one in terms of finals,” Hesson told ‘SEN NZ’, when asked if the Kiwis have a “phobia” of the Australians in cricket terms. “We’ve beaten them a heck of a lot in ChappellHadlees over the last six or seven years, and we’ve basically retained it the majority of the time.” India, on the other hand, have a poor record versus New Zealand in major International Cricket Council (ICC) events stretching back to 18 years. India’s seven-wicket win in the 2003 World Cup under Sourav Ganguly was
the last time they beat the Kiwis in an ICC tournament. The Men in Blue recently lost to the Kiwis in the T20 World Cup and the World Test Championship final earlier this year. They were also knocked out by Kane Williamson and Co. in the 2019 ODI World Cup semifinals. The 47-year-old also shed light on why New Zealand fare so well against India in ICC tournaments. “Each side has got better matchups than others. We obviously do very well against India, Australia struggle against India. “I think it’s just the way the side’s matchup against each other from a skill perspective, what we’re good at facing and what they’re good at facing. “Australia tends to deal with our swing bowling a lot better than the Indians do. So, I think it’s more matchup than phobia from my perspective.” Hesson, who guided New Zealand to the final of the 2019 ODI World Cup, feels the Australian players also have more experienced of playing matches at the big stage than their Kiwi counterparts.

KO H I M A , N OV 1 9 (NPN): The four-day football referee recruitment course for CAT-5 which began on November 16 concluded at Hockey Ground, IG stadium here on Friday. The course was organised by Nagaland Football Association (NFA) in collaboration with All India Football Federation (AIFF) and was hosted by Kohima District Football Referee Association (KDFRA). Special guest for the event and NFA president, Neibou Sekhose, in a brief speech urged the newly recruited referees to put their trainings into practice. He said the course was a first of its kind in the State which was conducted successfully with the help of instructors deputed by AIFF. Neibou said AIFF had sent two of its best instructors to train the referees in the State and therefore it was now equally important for the newly recruits to perform with their best. Encouraging the seven female referees, who were part of the course, Neibou said there was no
gender bias in Nagaland and women were performing better in all the fronts including education and employment. Likewise women should also excel in refereeing and that NFA would do it’s best to push the female referees forward. He said unless the new recruits practice whatever they have learned it would not be possible for them to reach their dream or move forward. Neibou added that by performing well in their profession the referees can display to the entire northeast region that Nagaland is no more a backward State. He said NFA would pave the way for the referees to take part in events at anywhere they choose. Stressing on the importance of being part of a recognised organization, Neibou said unless a person is part of it the degrees and certificates they earn would not be of any use. He observed that referees had the potential to influence a game to a great extend especially in terms of making the crowd enjoy or detest it. He urged the new recruits to place God in front

He thanked the Head of Referee (HoR) Kutu Sekhose for lobbying for the course while KDFRA for coming forward to host the same. He also expressed his appreciation to the two instructors and hoped that under their guidance the new referees would reach even higher. Earlier, HoR Kutu Sekhose in a brief remark congratulated the new recruits who had become the first batch of the course from the State. He urged them to

China says ‘not aware’ of Peng Shuai issue
China’s Foreign Ministry on Friday stuck to its line that it wasn’t aware of the controversy surrounding tennis professional Peng Shuai, who disappeared after accusing a former top official of sexually assaulting her. Ministry spokesperson Zhao Lijian told reporters that the matter was “not a diplomatic question and I’m not aware of the situation.” The ministry has consistently disavowed knowledge of the issue since Peng made her accusation more than two weeks ago. The International Olympic Committee declined to comment Friday, saying in an emailed statement: “Experience shows that quiet diplomacy offers the best opportunity to find a solution for questions of such nature. This explains why the IOC will not comment any further at this stage.”
Peng case ‘must be investigated, we must not stay silent’, says Serena Williams
Peng Shuai where she is and her state, know about her well-being. “We think it would be important that there’s an investigation into her allegations.” Peng, 35, a former Wimbledon and French Open doubles champion, alleged on the Chinese social media site Weibo earlier this month that former vice-premier Zhang had “forced” her into sex during a long-term on-off relationship.
The claims were quickly scrubbed from the Twitter-like platform and she has not been seen since, drawing mounting concern over her wellbeing. Throssell said it was often very difficult for victims of sexual assault to come forward with their allegations. “Sexual assault is found in any and every society,” she said. “With regard to the case of Peng Shuai, we are

UN wants proof of missing Chinese tennis star’s well-being G E N E VA / B E I J I N G, N OV 1 9 ( A F P / A P / AGENCIES): The United Nations said on Friday it wants proof of the whereabouts of Chinese tennis star Peng Shuai, missing ever since she made sexual assault allegations against a former vice-premier. The UN Human Rights Office called for a fully-transparent investigation into the former Grand Slam doubles champion’s claims against Zhang Gaoli. “It would be important to have proof of her whereabouts and well-being and we would urge that there be an investigation with full transparency into her allegations of sexual assault,” Liz Throssell, a spokeswoman for UN rights chief Michelle Bachelet’s office, told reporters in Geneva. “According to available information, Peng, a former world doubles number one, hasn’t been heard from publically since she alleged on social media that she had been sexually assaulted. “We would stress that it’s important to know
foot early in the match and led the opening quarter 33-11. Continuing their scoring rate in the second and third quarters, adding 54 points while Bangladesh managed just 21. At the final whistle, India were up by 65 points, ending 106-41 to win the title. Earlier, India topped the table with three wins in three matches and a points difference of +188. Sri Lanka came second with two wins and a loss. India had
calling for an investigation with full transparency into her allegation of sexual assault. “That should be the case into all allegations of sexual assault. It is really important to ensure accountability and justice for the victims, people who have suffered terrible trauma. “Very often it is such a challenge for them to come forward and to make these allegations public.”
Serena Williams says the case of Chinese tennis player Peng Shuai “must be investigated” and urged people “not to stay silent” about her welfare. Peng, 35, has not been heard from since she made sexual assault allegations against a leading Chinese government official two weeks ago, BBC reported. Chinese state media has released an email attributed to Peng, but doubt has been cast about its authenticity. “I hope she is safe and found as soon as possible,” said American Williams. Steve Simon, chairman of the Women’s Tennis Association, has said the organisation is prepared to pull its tournaments out of China if it is not satisfied with the response to Peng’s allegation. “We’re definitely willing to pull our business and deal with all the complications that come with it,” Simon told CNN.
maintain their health as apart from their training. He disclosed that NFA would try to organise more of such courses including some higher ones in the likes of CAT-4, CAT-3 etc. One of the instructors, Joychandra Singh in a short speech said the new recruits had encouraged him to perform better during the whole duration of the course. While urging them to remain simple to achieve better performances, Singh exhorted the recruits to keep upgrading their skills. Singh observed that since players from the Northeastern States were
dominating in the Indian Super League, it was now time for even the referees to dominate in the event. He encouraged NFA and other bodies to invite him during any event so that he would be able to come and assess the performance of the recruits and help them improve since the practical aspect of the profession was now more important. One representative each from the male and female recruits gave short speeches on behalf of their peers. Earlier, the closing function was chaired by NFA member Pentilo.
IOC hails progress at meeting with Afghan sports officials KABUL, NOV 19 (AP): Sports leaders appointed by the Taliban have promised Olympic officials that Afghanistan will continue to allow its athletes and teams to compete internationally. The Inter national Olympic Committee announced the pledge Thursday after its delegation met in Qatar with leaders of the Afghan General Directorate of Physical Education & Sports. The Qatari capital city of Doha has been a political base for the Taliban, which retook control of Afghanistan in August. “During the meeting, the Afghan representatives stated that they were strongly committed to following and observing the Olympic Charter,” the IOC said in a statement. Hundreds of athletes and sports officials, including many women who feared being barred from competing and from reprisals, have left Afghanistan since August. They were helped by international athlete representatives and sports bodies including the IOC and FIFA. Thursday’s
outcome could mean Afghan athletes will compete at the Beijing Olympics in February. “Both parties reiterated the fundamental right to access and practice sport safely for all individuals without discrimination,” the IOC said. “Both sides consider the discussions to have been constructive and agreed to continue the dialogue.” The IOC noted it “continues to recognize the existing National Olympic Committee (NOC) of Afghanistan,” whose elected leaders were present in Qatar, where the ruling Emir is also a long-time IOC member. The Afghan delegation was led by Nazar Mohammad Mutmaeen, the IOC said. He was announced in September by the Taliban as a member of the interim government cabinet. K Y M C

India thrash NZ by 7 wkts; lead T20 series 2-0
RANCHI, NOV 19 (PTI): Skipper Rohit Shar ma and his deputy KL Rahul stitched an enterprising century-plus opening stand to power India to a comfortable sev-en-wicket win over New Zealand in the second T20 and take an unassailable 2-0 lead in the threematch series here on Friday. Chasing a modest 154 under heavy dew condition, the Indian captain and vice-captain started off in contrasting styles en route to their respective halfcenturies. The Indian skipper is now involved in the most century-plus stands (13), over-taking 12 by Babar Azam and Martin Guptill. The duo got out in the space of 13 balls but by then India needed just 19 off 27 balls and Rishabh Pant sealed the issue with a straight six over Jimmy Neesham’s head in the 18th over to take India home with 16 balls to spare. The third and final T20I is scheduled to be played at the iconic Eden Gardens in Kolkata on Sunday. Rahul made his aggressive intent clear from the onset and raced to 15 off 12 balls before his captain could face a delivery. There was a brief lull

in the middle with 23 balls without a boundary before Rohit suddenly switched gears just before the halfway mark. Suddenly the equation looked at par with 75 needed in the back-10 and Rahul, meanwhile, brought up his 16th T20I fifty in 40 balls with a flat six off pacer Adam Milne. Earlier, India rode on a tight bowling display by the spin duo of Ravichandran Ashwin and Axar Patel to stymie New Zealand’s explosive start and restrict the visitors to a modest 153 for six. In a must-win match for
the Kiwis, who are trailing 0-1 in the three-match series, Martin Guptill (31 off 15 balls) and Daryl Mitchell (31 off 28 balls) took the Indian pacers to the cleaners after being put into bat. Cruising at 64 for one in the powerplay, the Kiwis suddenly hit a roadblock in the crucial middle overs and managed just 64 runs from 7 to 16 overs with Ashwin (1/19) and Axar (1/26) dominating the New Zealand batters in the dew-laden condition. Skipper Rohit cleverly used Ashwin and Axar in the middle overs to restrict
Indonesia Masters: Sindhu, Srikanth in SFs
PV Sindhu and Kidambi Srikanth
BALI, NOV 19 (PTI): Premier Indian shuttlers PV Sindhu and Kidambi Srikanth continued their impressive run and registered dominant victories to enter the semifinals of their respective events at the Indonesia Masters Super 750 badminton tournament here on Friday. While reigning world champion Sindhu, seeded third, scripted a convincing 21-13 21-10 win over Turkey’s Neslihan Yigit in 35 minutes in the women’s singles quarterfinals, Srikanth made short work of compatriot HS Prannoy 21-7 21-18 in the men’s last eight fixture. With the win the twotime Olympic medallist Sindhu extended her dominating head-to-head record
against the Turkish shuttler to 4-0. The 26-year-old from Hyderabad, ranked seven, had beaten Yigit last month as well in the Denmark Open. In the men’s event, former world No. 1 Srikanth was at his vintage best and gave away just 7 points in a lop-sided first game. The second game was more evenly matched as Prannoy, who claimed an upset win over Tokyo Olympics gold medallist Victor Axelsen earlier, made a strong recovery. Prannoy started the proceedings aggressively, racing to a 5-2 lead but Srikanth came from behind to snatch the lead at the midgame interval. Having gained momentum, the former world No. 1
then extended his lead to 15-12 and despite Prannoy levelling the proceedings once again, Srikanth sealed the match to reach his second consecutive semifinals. He will now take on either Thailand’s Kunlavut Vitidsarn or Denmark’s Anders Antonsen, who is seeded third, in the semifinals. Sindhu, who has got relatively easy opponents until now, has a tough match ahead as she will face top seed Akane Yamaguchi of Japan. Although Yamaguchi is currently ranked third in the world and is the top seed, Sindhu has a superior 12-7 head-to-head record against the Japanese shuttler and has won both the meetings between the two this year.
the run flow. Ashwin was simply sensational with his variations as the New Zealand batters found it difficult to go after him. Axar got the wicket of Mark Chapman, fresh from a half-century in Jaipur as the left-hander failed to clear the long-on boundary. The duo’s remarkable effort in the middle gave the pace attack some respite and newcomer Harshal Patel, who made his T20I debut four days shy of his 31st birthday, returned with impressive figures of 2 for 25. Curry hits 40 points in Warriors win
a flier in the powerplay with Guptill smashing his way to a 15-ball 31 (2x6s, 3x4s) after being dropped on eight. That innings saw Guptill (3231 runs) surpass star Indian batsman Virat Kohli (3227) as the leading rungetter in T20 Internationals. Guptill smashed Bhuvenshwar for back-to-back boundaries but there was an opportunity in the fourth ball when he mishit over the long-off region. KL Rahul made a terrific attempt running backwards and nearly got hold of the ball before it slipped out of his hands. After conceding 14 runs in his first over, Bhuvneshwar gave away 13 in his next over with Guptill smacking him over his head for a six. Mitchell also joined the party as the visitors cruised to 42 from the first overs. Deepak Chahar finally gave India the breakthrough before the spin duo of Axar and Ashwin restricted the flow of runs. Brief scores: New Zealand 153/6 in 20 overs (Glenn Phillips 34; Harshal Patel 2/25, Ravichandran Ashwin 1/19) lost to India 155/3 in 17.2 overs (KL Rahul 65, Rohit Sharma 55; Tim Southee 3/16).
LONDON, NOV 19 (AGENCIES): Stephen Curry scored 40 points, including 20 in the fourth quarter, to help the Golden State Warriors beat the Cleveland Cavaliers 104-89. The Warriors started the final quarter 13 points down, but Curry’s fine streak saw them outscore Cleveland 36-8 in 12 minutes to secure victory on the road. Curry’s side have the best record in the NBA, with 13 wins and two losses. “He’s one of the greatest
players in the history of the game,” said Warriors coach Steve Kerr. “He’s always capable of catching fire like that. As amazing as it was, it didn’t shock me because this is what he does.” Curry made nine of 16 three-pointers attempted and overtook former team-mate Kevin Durant to lead the league in points per game this season, now averaging 29.5 points across 15 games. He was also playing with
a left hip contusion sustained in Tuesday’s win over the Brooklyn Nets and revealed he will now have an “assessment” to see if he can play against the Detroit Pistons on Friday. Elsewhere, Jimmy Butler scored 32 points to lead the Miami Heat to an impressive 112-97 win over the Washington Wizards. The Heat have now won four straight games and are top of the Eastern Conference with a 11-5 record.
ATK Mohun Bagan beat Kerala Blasters 4-2 in ISL season opener
M A RG AO, N OV 1 9 (IANS): Hugo Boumous (3’, 39’) scored a fast-paced brace to help Kolkata giants ATK Mohun Bagan defeat Kerala Blasters 4-2 in the opening game of the 2021-22 Indian Super League (ISL) at the PJN Stadium in Fatorda, on Friday. Former FC Goa and Mumbai City FC star Boumous became the league’s fastest scorer in an opening encounter, finding the net from outside the box within three minutes. Boumous (3’, 39’), Liston Colaco (50’), and Roy Krishna (27’) scored the goals for Mohun Bagan while for Blasters, young enigma Sahal Abdul Samad (24’) and Jorge Diaz (69’) were the scorers for the Kerala side. ATK Mohun Bagan wasted no time in putting up a dominating display, sounding warning bells across the league at the very outset. Albino Gomes got nowhere close to the elite footballing brain of the Fiji-born forward. The first half was sealed and delivered as Boumous capitalised on being left unmarked. He ventured out with precision, hit it across and through the keeper’s legs to deliver a two-goal cushion. Post the break, Liston Colaco curled in a delectable fourth goal with little help from Krishna, much to the delight of coach Antonio Lopez Habas. The game entered into
an even contest thereafter with the ball but ATK Mohun Bagan kept teasing the Blasters defenders. Jorge Diaz (69’) pulled a goal back out of nowhere for Blasters as ATK Mohun Bagan appeared a tad complacent in holding down their shape. ATK Mohun Bagan would be happy with the performance considering Kerala Blasters entered the game with a robust preseason. Bagan will play the famous Kolkata derby next weekend while Blasters set to face NorthEast United on Thursday.

The forward line will see twotime Olympian Vandana Katariya lead the charge with Navneet Kaur who was part of the Tokyo Olympics squad. Forwards Rajwinder Kaur, Mariana Kujur and Sonika too have been named in the team. N av j o t K a u r a n d youngster Suman Devi Thoudam have been chosen as alternate players (AP), who will be permitted to play only if there is an injury or someone in the 18-mem-
ber squad is ruled out of the tournament due to Covid-19. Speaking about the team composition, chief coach Janneke Schopman said, “Despite some unfortunate injuries and senior players joining the junior team for the Junior World Cup in South Africa, I feel we have selected a good team for the upcoming Women’s Asian Champions Trophy. This tournament will be a good opportunity for some young new players to get a taste of the highest international level and I’m excited to see if we can implement our training themes consistently. “I’m sure that expectations are high after our success at the Tokyo Olympics but we all start at zero again. I am confident that we can show our abilities and will be looking for our team to play consistently at a high pace,” Schopman added. While India will play their opening match against Thailand on December 5, they play Malaysia on December 6 and hosts and defending champions Korea in their third match on December 8.
