Gandhi gave the clarion call at a virtual meeting of leaders of 19 opposition parties including NCP supremo Sharad Pawar and four non-Congress chief ministers--TMC’s Mamata Banerjee (West Bengal), DMK’s MK Stalin (Tamil Nadu), Shiv Sena’sUddhav Thackeray (Maharashtra) and JMM’s Hemant Soren (Jharkhand)-- hosted by her, after which they decided to

Gandhi also told the meeting -- one of the biggest gatherings of opposition leaders in recent times --that there is simply no alternative to working cohesively. “...We all have our compulsions, but clearly, a time has come when the interests of our nation demand that we rise above them,” Gandhi said. The opposition leaders urged the people of the
country to save India for a better tomorrow even as Pawar said those who believe in democracy and secularism must come together for saving the democratic principles and ethos of our country and collectively draw up a “time-bound action programme”. “We must collectively prioritize each issue and solve them one by one to give our country a good present and future,” Pawar said in a series of tweets. Chief Minister Stalin tweeted to say federalism is being “destroyed” due to the “scant respect” the BJP has for states’ rights, and it is imperative that the opposition stands united at this hour. The leaders also put out a 11-point charter of demands before the government, including a Supreme

Joint protest: In a joint statement issued by leaders of the 19 parties, they said, “We will jointly organise protest actions all over the country from 20th to 30th September, 2021.” The leaders said the forms of these public protest actions will be decided by the respective state units of their parties, depending on the concrete conditions of the Covid regulations and protocols in the states. These forms, amongst others, may include dharnas, protest demonstrations and hartals, according to the joint statement. “We, the leaders of 19 Opposition parties, call upon the people of India to rise to the occasion to defend our secular, democratic, republican order with all our might. Save India today, so that we can change it for a better tomorrow,” they said.

Diesel price cut, no change in petrol Rename Nagaland United Govt as Nagaland Consultative Govt: RPP D I M A P U R , AU G 2 0 (NPN): State-owned oil marketing companies reduced the price of diesel for the third consecutive day, but left the petrol price unchanged. According to a price notification, diesel was reduced by 20 paise per litre bringing down the price to Rs 89.27 per litre in the national capital. After Friday’s rate revision, diesel prices in Dimapur and Kohima decreased to Rs. 91.33 per litre and
Rs.92.10 per litre respectively. Global crude oil prices continued to decline. The October contract of Brent crude oil on the Intercontinental Exchange (ICE) was trading at $66.72 per barrel, reports IANS. The fall in global oil prices should have resulted in around Rs 2 per litre reduction on retail rates of fuel. However, OMCs still want to see market movements before making further cuts.

Breakthrough infections in India show high proportion of Delta variant Yannu village refutes allegation NEW DELHI, AUG 20 (AGENCIES): B reakthrough infections of coronavirus cases comprise a very high proportion of the Delta variant, the INSACOG, a genome sequencing government consortium of laboratories, has said. The continuing COVID-19 outbreaks across India are attributable to the Delta variant, a susceptible population and reduced vaccine effectiveness in blocking transmission, INSACOG added. However, vaccination continues to be
very effective in reducing severe disease and death, and public health measures to reduce transmission and inoculation remain critical, INSACOG stressed in its latest bulletin dated August 16. “As of now, sequencing of vaccination breakthroughs in India is also showing a very high proportion of Delta variant. Investigations for any new variants are ongoing,” INSACOG said. Of the 30,230 samples of Variants of Concern
and Variants of Interest sequenced by INSACOG, 20,324 were of Delta, it said. Delta variant is currently driving pandemic across several countries with China and Korea seeing new highs. Korea has reported that new surge is due to Delta plus K417N mutation. Delta variant resulted in a deadly second wave in the country between March to May that wreaked havoc on health infrastructure, overwhelming hospitals. It infected lakhs and killed thousands. In India, new
cases of AY.1, AY.2, AY.3 (Delta Plus) are being seen in July samples from Maharashtra at a frequency of about 1 per cent. However, at this time none of these sub-lineages has been found to have a growth advantage over the Delta parent lineage, it noted. According to INSACOG (Indian SARSCoV2 Genomics Consortium), 61 samples of Delta Plus variants have been detected in the country so far. “Delta variant is the major VOC in India at this
time. Continuing outbreaks across India are attributable to Delta, a susceptible population, reduced vaccine effectiveness in blocking transmission, and opportunities for transmission,” INSACOG said. Daily coronavirus cases have seen a significant plunge since the second wave which peaked in May. There has been a concern whether an increasing vaccination breakthroughs in India are because of a new variant, INSACOG said.
D I M A P U R , AU G 2 0 (NPN): Yannu village has refuted the allegation of land encroachment levelled against it by Yansa village, while reiterating its claim of its plantations and properties having been destroyed by armed men on August 18. Reacting to the allegations of Yansa village, Yannu village chief angh N Awang Jongwang in a rejoinder said that Yannu and Yansa had cordial relationship, extending help to each other as and when required. However, Yannu had faced
a major health crisis – it was hit by a major epidemic that affected the whole village in late 1940s. People left the village for a brief period, only to come back to their own land led by their angh in early 1950. He claimed that Yansa extended help to Yannu only after three years when people had already come back and were dealing with the crisis on their own. Nevertheless, he clarified that the help was readily accepted in good faith.

DG WARNS COPS TO REMOVE SOCIAL MEDIA POSTS
M’laya cops remove sympathy posts on ex-militant’s death
SHILLONG, AUG 20 (AGENCIES): A section of police officers and constables from Meghalaya has shown sympathy on social media for a former militant leader who was killed in an encounter, leading to arson and curfew on Independence Day in Shillong, reports outlook India. An SP-ranked officer said on condition of anonymity that it took a stern warning from the Director General of Police R Ramachandran to get the police personnel to withdraw offending social media posts that included displaying black flags. Cheristerfield Thangkhiew, the former selfstyled general secretary of the outlawed Hynniewtrep National Liberation Council (HNLC), was shot dead by the police on August 13 when the force raided his home in Shillong’s Mawlai area in connection with the recent IED blasts across the state. On August 15 when his body was taken for the funeral, violence erupted
Bhaichung Bhutia demands ILP in Sikkim
Bhaichung Bhutia
G A N G TO K , AU G 2 0 (PTI): Hamro Sikkim Party (HSP) chief Bhaichung Bhutia demanded Inner Line Permit (ILP) for the state, hitting out at Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang for not raising the issue with the Centre during his visit to New Delhi. Bhutia, the national football icon, said most Northeast states with international borders have the ILP in place and Sikkim should also have it. “It is unfortunate that our CM did not think of raising the demand for the introduction of Inner Line Permit (ILP) in Sikkim,” he said on Thursday. Instead, the chief minister gave a green signal to the Centre to further dilute the provisions of Article 371F, which protects the rights of the Sikkimese people, Bhutia claimed. The Sikkim Krantikari Morcha (SKM) government has already allowed “solution” of Article 371F and the Revenue Order Number 1, he claimed without explaining it. Bhutia said the chief minister should make all memorandum and demands submitted to the Centre during his visit to New Delhi public as the people of Sikkim have every right to know the details.

in the state capital forcing the authorities to clamp curfew which was partially lifted on Thursday. “Some officers and constables were found to have set black flags as their display pictures or status. Some posted comments against the police force showing sympathy to Thangkhiew. The DGP himself has noticed this during a video conference with officers,” the officer said. On August 16, the authorities sent a message to all police stations directing the officers-in-charge to issue orders to all concerned to delete those posts immediately, otherwise the staff concerned will face
strict disciplinary action. Those posts were then removed and no action was taken against anyone, the officer said. Thangkhiew’s family members told PTI that they have lodged a complaint against two police officers - East Jaintia Hills district SP and East Khasi Hills district SP (Traffic) -- accusing them of being involved in the encounter killing. The Meghalaya government has instituted a judicial inquiry to be conducted by Justice (retd) T Vaiphei, the chairperson of the Meghalaya Human Rights Commission, into the incident. Meanwhile, the curfew was further relaxed from 5 am till 6 pm on Friday as there were no fresh reports of violence, East Khasi Hills district Deputy Commissioner I Laloo said. On Thursday, the curfew was lifted for 12 hours from 5 am. Night curfew will remain in place from 6 pm onwards until further orders, she said.
Meghalaya government willing for peace talks Correspondent SHILLONG, AUG 20: Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma on Friday reiterated that the government is ready for peace talks with the rebel outfit Hynniewtrep National Liberation Council (HNLC) provided that all “conditions” put forth by it are withdrawn. “We have already started communicating with them (HNLC). Rather they had approached us also and based on that we had given a verbal communication saying that we are keen for long lasting peace but discussion at the government of India and government of Meghalaya level cannot take place with conditions being put in the first letter that they had sent to us,” Sangma told reporters. “(Accordingly), we had repeatedly informed them that we would want you to not mention those conditions, come to the talks unconditionally, shun violence and within the constitutional framework of the country, we are ready to talk and discuss and that is our stand even today,” he maintained. The Chief Minister further informed that about 45 days back in one of his visits to Delhi, a detailed meeting
SHILLONG, AUG 20: Meghalaya police on Friday arrested one person with huge cache of explosives after a hot pursuit on AH-1 in Ri-Bhoi district. The explosives were recovered from a vehicle bearing Assam registration number AS-01-BV-8065, which was proceeding towards Assam’s main city Guwahati, at police checkpoint near Byrnihat police outpost at around 1.10 a.m and the driver of the vehicle Moynul Hoque of Rangaswari village under Kamrup district of Assam was arrested. Meghalaya police spokesperson, Gabriel Iangrai said 2044 numbers
was held with the officials of the Ministry of Home Affairs on this issue. “We again expressed to them that this is what it is and they (MHA) again expressed to us that they (HNLC) have to come out with a letter that is not having the conditions – that is how it is right now but I would like to again stress that obviously the government would want that the talks to happen but it cannot be on the basis of the conditions,” Sangma added. On the requests made by the HNLC for appointment of interlocutor to facilitate the peace talks, Sangma however said, “For these processes to move forward, they (HNLC) must come ahead with no conditions and especially the conditions that they have mentioned and they must shun violence, they must be ready to speak in terms of the constitutional framework of the country – so all these aspects that we have mentioned earlier and on earlier occasions also – these will have to be met and only then can we take the discussion forward so therefore, that is what it is right now and if we are given a letter mentioning that they are ready to talk without these then the process ahead can be taken.”
Arunachal govt working to resolve boundary dispute with Assam: Khandu ITANAGAR, AUG 20 (PTI): Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu said the state government is working to resolve the interstate boundary issue with Assam. Khandu said he had already spoken to his Assam counterpart Himanta Biswa Sarma who agreed to resolve all issues through bilateral talks sitting across the table. “The state government had constituted a High Power Committee under the chairmanship of Home Minister Bamang Felix which has already conducted several rounds of consultative meetings with stakeholders on the matter,” the chief minister said at a function here on Thursday night. The chief minister added that the Committee will hold a meeting with all MLAs and deputy commissioners of the districts sharing boundary with Assam on August 26. Khandu said that the groundwork under process is based on the recommendations made by the one man Local Boundary Commission constituted by the Supreme Court. Arunachal shares approximately 730 km boundary with Assam. The function was or-

ganised to thank Prime Minister Narendra Modi for passing the Constitution (Scheduled Tribes) Order (Amendment) Bill, 2021, in the recent session of Parliament. On the contentious issue of Chakma and Hajong refugees settled in the state, the chief minister reiterated that as per prevailing acts and laws no non-indigenous tribe of Arunachal Pradesh can permanently settle in the state. “The Chakma and Hajong settlers are also human. They too are suffering a lot here. Therefore, we have to evolve a win-win solution for both and our indigenous tribes,” he said and urged the MPs, particularly Union Law Minister Kiren Rijiju to pursue with the central leadership for a permanent solution. Khandu further said that the matter related to property rights to girl child in the state needs con-
sultancy and a proper debate involving all the stakeholders of the state. “We all love our daughters and want to give them equal rights be it of education, employment or property. But this matter needs a proper debate and consultancy with regard to our indigenous identity and tribal rights specifically on property and inheritance rights,” Khandu said. Speaking on polygamy the chief minister said that it needs to become obsolete in today’s world. “The practice must have been socially accepted in the past due to various reasons but I do not think it is relevant today. Instead of helping the family, the practice of polygamy affects and destroys and lives of women of the family,” he said. Lauding the State Commission for Women, Arunachal Pradesh Women’s Welfare Society and Arunachal Pradesh State Commission for Protection of Child Rights for painstakingly compiling a draft bill on these subjects, Khandu assured that it would be studied in detail and extensive consultancy meetings would be held with all stakeholders to incorporate their views and suggestions before finalising a final draft.

minister assured that tabling a white paper on the COVID-19 management is being initiated by the state and measures are being taken up by the government during the ongoing session. The chief minister said that the pandemic being a new one and there was no cure, it could not be ascertained what would happen next. “Novel COVID-19 situation is unpredictable and it is difficult to assess the outcome,” he said. Singh also assured to table medical reports regarding the cause of death of four persons including a breastfeeding mother after they allegedly took jab of the Covid-19 vaccine. Earlier moving the call attention, opposition
member K Meghachandra alleged that the state health department was yet to provide the cause of the deaths of the four persons after taking the Covid-19 vaccine. He said that two persons from Thoubal district including a young mother from Thoubal district had died in the second week of June last after taking the first jab of Covid-19 vaccine. Two other persons, one each from Bishnupur and Churachandpur have also lost their lives after administering the Covid -19 vaccine, he informed, while alleging the authorities of the state health department were yet to ascertain the causes of the deaths of these persons. “Non-disclose of the cause of the deaths after
receiving the Covid-19 jab is one of the many reasons behind people afraid of getting vaccinated,” he said. The opposition member then insisted the state chief minister who is also in-charge of the state health department to table the detailed reports regarding the deaths of the persons to the house during the ongoing session. While alleging a very high Covid-19 infection and mortality rate in the state compared to the national rates, Meghachandra asked whether it was due to poor healthcare infrastructures or due to shortage of manpower. He asked, “Why the (health) department silent instead of revealing the cause of the death due
to Covid-19 which is very alarming.” He observed lack of coordination among the departments of the state government involved in the fight against the pandemic while insisting the health minister to table a white paper on state’s Covid-19 management and preparation being made for facing the possible third wave. The chief minister replied that the state government was making continuous efforts to fight the pandemic, adding that all out efforts were being made to provide medical equipment like oxygen cylinder, manpower among others as the second wave of COVID-19 was impacting the general public.

SHILLONG, AUG 20: In a startling revelation, Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma on Friday said that ministers, legislators, businessmen and even common people in the State have received extortion demands and that comprehensive investigation in this regard was on to end this racket. “All the actions and steps that you have seen in the last many weeks, months and days, have been done because of those messages and bomb blasts, the IED blasts that took place in different locations and because of the different threats that have been there to the safety of the citizens of our state,” Sangma said. On Thursday, Leader of Opposition and former chief minister Mukul Sangma of the Congress had revealed that many ministers and legislators had been served with demand notes and had slammed the state government for its alleged “insensitivity” regarding the issue. “Everything that has happened in the past has been clearly the steps that have been taken to ensure that we are able to stop all of these kinds of activities that are taking place,” the Chief Minister said. “Therefore, whether it is the different arrests that have already been made, dif-

It’s an extortion racket in one way,” Conrad said. “This has led to us as a government and more impor tantly the police department doing a large amount of investigation. Large amounts of evidence, documentation and proof, many kinds of proof…investigation is being really done in a lot of detail. Movements of individuals…different kind of data... I will be risking the investigation in this point of time by revealing all of that,” the Chief Minister said, adding that steps have been taken by the police department to ensure that this comes to a stop.

Rahul Gandhi inaugurated a photo-exhibition dedicated to Rajiv Gandhi, and it was organised by the IYC. He also unveiled a bust of the former prime minister at the IYC headquarters
here. Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi posted a picture of hers with Rajiv Gandhi when she was a child along with a note which read, “The brave do not fall silent before injustice, they speak up for what is right and good, they do not cower when it is dark, they stand strong, they spread the light of truth across skies blackened by deceit. The brave never die.” The Congress, from its official Twitter handle, tweeted, “India’s youngest Prime Minister. The archi-
tect of 21st Century India. The visionary, the pioneer, the patriot. Today we pay homage to Bharat Ratna, Rajiv Gandhi and celebrate his immense contributions to the nation.” Congress’ chief spokesperson Randeep Surjewala also hailed the former prime minister and recalled his contribution to the country. “Remembering Rajiv ji on his 77th birth anniversary - the visionary who shaped India’s destiny for 21st century, who touched lives in every sphere, who translated
Yannu village refutes allegation
(From p-1) However, Jongwang alleged that it soon came to light that Yansa extended help as part of a conspiracy to subjugate Yannu, which he said was totally uncalled for without any regard to past cordial relation and tradition. He said a host of other villages, including Chatting, Zangkham, etc. genuinely helped Yannu during the crisis and never claimed authority over Yannu. Mentioning that Yannu historically remained one of the prominent villages with “Pongven status”, which can be testified by other prominent villages of Konyak Jatnu, the chief angh said to think that Yannu was governed by Yansa at any point of time was a sheer illusion. He also refuted the allegation that Yannu’s history began in 1957, terming it as total disregard of historical truths. “Claiming authority by Yansa over Yannu is nothing short of self-mockery. The meaning of ‘NU’ and ‘SA’ speaks for themselves and other villages of Konyak are aware of it,” the rejoinder stated. Further, claiming that Thamnu and Konhoa areas had been historically cultivated by Yannu both before and after the major health crisis faced by the village, Jongwang asserted that there was no question of encroachment. He said there was no history of any other village cultivating the area, except Yannu village. In fact, he pointed out that several plots of land were actually purchased by individuals
of Longting village from Yannu along the fringes of Thamnu. Similarly, he claimed that several plots of eastern fringes of Konhoa area were purchased from Yannu by Loakho village and the land purchase agreements proved who the original owners of Thamnu and Konhoa were. In addition, he said the agri-link roads in Thamnu and Konhoa were constructed by the government over recognised Yannu land. Reiterating the allegation that crops and tea plantation were destroyed and huts burned down on August 18, Jongwang alleged that nearly a thousand people, including those remaining at standby, came armed with guns and machetes. Mentioning that no sane person would be able to justify such cowardice act, he alleged that the group had overshot their bounds by saying they had come to evict people and thereby took law into their own hands. Despite the restraining orders from district administration to both the parties on retaining status quo and maintaining peace in the area, he accused the group of indulging in condemnable conduct to settle the matter and called for initiating an inquiry. Jongwang clarified that setting up of police outpost at Yannu was the administration’s prerogative and was not done at the behest of Yannu as alleged. As everyone knew that hooligans and unruly youth in Tizit came commonly from a few villages to Yannu neighbourhood, he said a police outpost was set up
at the village by law enforcing authority apprehending breakdown of law and order. Being one of the pioneers in terms of bringing education and embracing Christianity in Tizit, the chief angh claimed Yannu had been advocating peace and development for Tizit area in general. But, he accused Yansa of serving summon letters to Yannu by wrongly incriminating the former in recent times. However, believing in mutual trust and respect, he claimed that Yannu elders made sincere efforts to amicably resolve the issue and proceeded for dialogue. “However, our respected Smt Lt Zennon, SDEO of Yansa, passed away on the proposed date of meeting and therefore the meeting was postponed in her honour,” he added. In the second instance of proposed meeting, he said the personnel assistant (PA) to deputy commissioner (DC) of Mon district had stated that spot verification team to Mankhoa was arranged, but it coincided with the proposed meeting and the inability to attend the meeting was intimated to Yansa Wanghoa. Thereafter, Covid situation followed by lockdown and other health protocols only delayed the meeting. However, Jongwang assured that Yannu still believed in sitting across the table and resolving the issue peacefully. “We hope that wisdom will prevail over personal ego and YENsystem in our area for lasting solution,” he added.
Images from Kabul airport remind me of Kandahar horror: IC814 pilot The hijackers executed one passenger, Rupin Katyal, and finally negotiated the release of terrorists Masood Azhar Alvi, Syed Omar Sheikh and Mushtaq Ahmad Zargar from Indian jails on December 31, 1999, in exchange for the hostages. On Friday, Sharan said: “I find the images to be quite like of that time. Definitely, it gives us all the memories of horrors
of that time. It reminds us of that.” He said there were two kinds of Taliban forces that they encountered at the Kandahar airport in December 1999. “One was Kabali. You can see these Talibanis with turbans and civil clothes and rocket launchers and all. So one force was this one which was type of a moral police. The other one was commandos,” he said.
Encounter in J-K’s Pulwama, two militants killed SRINAGAR, AUG 20 (PTI): Two Hizbul Mujahideen (HM) militants – part of a hit squad of the outfit responsible for civilian killings -- were killed in an encounter with security forces in Jammu and Kashmir’s Pulwama district on Friday, officials said here. Security forces launched a cordon and search operation at Khrew in Pampore area of the district following information about the presence of militants there, the officials said. They said the search operation turned into an encounter after the ultras opened fire at the security forces who retaliated. In the ensuing encounter, two militants were killed, the officials said. Incriminating material including arms and ammunition have been recovered from the site of the encounter, they added. The police said the identification of the second terrorist is being ascertained.
SOMNATH, AUG 20 (PTI): Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday said that destructive forces and people who follow the ideology of creating empires through terror can dominate for some time, but their existence is not permanent as they cannot suppress humanity forever. He also said it was Indian people’s spiritual bent of mind that kept the country united for centuries, and called for the need to develop the “spiritual tourism” sector for the progress of different regions and creation of new job opportunities for the local residents. Modi was speaking while virtually inaugurating a few projects of the famous Somnath temple situated in Gir-Somnath district of Gujarat. “This temple was demolished numerous times over several centuries in the past. Idols of deities were also desecrated. Attempts were made to erase its existence. But it came up again in its full glory every time it was demolished,” he said. This temple gave a message to the entire world that “truth cannot be de-
Narendra Modi (PTI) feated by falsehood, and faith cannot be crushed under the feet of terror”, he added. “Somnath temple is a symbol of trust and assurance for the entire world. Forces that strive for destruction and those who follow the ideology of creating empires out of terror can dominate for some time, but their existence is never permanent as they cannot suppress humanity forever,” the PM said. This was true when some tyrants were demolishing the Somnath temple, and it is true even today when the world has apprehensions because of some people following such ideology, he said. The prime minister’s remarks come in the wake
of the Taliban takeover of Afghanistan. As the chairman of the Shree Somnath Trust, the PM inaugurated and laid the foundation stone for four projects, worth Rs 83 crore, of the Somnath temple. It included the ground-breaking ceremony for the Parvati Temple that is coming up near the main temple for Rs 30 crore. The three projects that he inaugurated were a 1.4-km long ‘Samudra Darshan’ walkway or promenade built at a cost of Rs 49 crore on the seashore behind the temple, a newlybuilt museum housing ancient artefacts constructed near the temple at Rs 75 lakh, and the renovated ‘Ahilyabai Holkar Temple’ or the old Somnath temple, renovated at a cost of Rs 3.5 crore. Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani and other dignitaries attended the programme at a temple auditorium. On the occasion, Modi also said that India, which was at 65th position in 2013 in the Travel and Tourism Competitiveness Index, jumped to 34th position in 2019.
Rename Nagaland United Govt as Nagaland... (From p-1) RPP said this fact cannot be denied because no women representatives were invited to the consultative meeting, the party pointed out. In this regard, RPP alleged that the only agenda of the meeting was the State government’s insatiable desire to access funds of Urban Local Bodies (ULBs). It said the fund amounting to several hundred crores of rupees could be accessed by holding ULB elections at the earliest, possibly by January or February, 2022
since ULB funds had been held up by the Central government since 2008. “Basically the ruling politicians want to create a war chest (funds) for the 2023 State Assembly elections by accessing the ULB funds,” the release stated. RPP therefore maintained that the August 18 exercise was a fraud committed by the State government by disguising it as discussion on women reservation and others. It demanded that NUG should immediately rectify the mistake and apologise to the women of Nagaland and 14 tribes.
‘Centre wants states to say there were no oxygen shortage deaths’
NEW DELHI, AUG 20 (PTI): Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia on Friday said Lieutenant Governor Anil Baijal has again rejected the Delhi government’s proposal to form a panel to “investigate deaths due to oxygen shortage” in the national capital. No one can deny that Delhi grappled with an oxygen crisis in April and May during the second Covid wave and also no one can deny that people died in the capital due to shortage of oxygen, he said during an online press conference. “We had resubmitted a file for the
constitution of a panel to probe deaths due to oxygen shortage. The LG (lieutenant governor) is saying that there is no need for that,” Sisodia said The deputy chief minister said that on one hand, the Centre has been asking states to tell how many people died due to oxygen shortage and on the other, “you have not been allowing us to investigate such deaths”. “Then how will states tell?” he asked. “That means the Centre wants us to give in writing that no death occurred due to the shortage of oxygen. It will be a big lie,” Sisodia said.

NEW DELHI, AUG 20 (PTI): Images from Kabul airport over the the last few days have brought back the horrors of 22 years ago, says Devi Sharan, captain of Indian Airlines flight IC814 that was hijacked in December 1999 and taken to Kandahar in Afghanistan where it was held captive for an entire week. Photographs and videos of people crowding outside the Kabul airport and inside, with scores on the tarmac scrambling to get into planes to escape the Taliban that took control of the Afghanistan capital on Sunday, recall the desperation of that unforgettable winter, says Sharan. “It was like I have gone 22 years back. Over 20 years have passed, but the images (of today) are the same, “the 59-year-old told PTI in an interview. “The difference is that we were the only people at that time in Kandahar but now you can see a crowd at the (Kabul) airport. But definitely, these people are desperate to come out just like we wanted to come out,” he added. IC814 was heading from Kathmandu to New Delhi on December 24, 1999 -- with 179 passengers and 11 crew members on board -- when it was hijacked and taken to Taliban-controlled Kandahar by five Pakistani terrorists. Sharan was the captain, Rajinder Kumar the first officer and Anil Kumar Jaggia the flight engineer of IC814.

egional political parties in Nagaland, often jest with mild sarcasm about the Congress’ high command culture and by saying so, suggest they are free of such a culture. Even the BJP has its high command in Delhi, though it prefers to call it central or national leadership. Whatever the terminology, the existence of a core national leadership are practical aspects of political parties that have a pan-India reach. Regional political parties in Nagaland never tire of taking a dig, especially at the state Congress or perhaps even BJP, that these national parties cannot do anything without the consent of their high commands in Delhi. These regional parties say, that unlike the national parties, their(regional parties) high command are the people. By maintaining that the Naga public are their high command, both NPF and NDPP are only indulging in rhetoric. This may be attested by the condition of the ordinary Naga public of Nagaland despite regional parties being in continuous power since 2003. It also does not indicate that the condition of the high command or the people/voters who are supposedly at a higher plane and above these political parties is enviable to say the least. In practice, the high command of the regional parties-public/voters- do not exist when it comes to sharing development. When it also comes to decision making, only a handful of Civil Society Organizations(CSOs) who generally favour everything that the government does, are taken into confidence. Therefore, the claim of people being their high command is also not based on facts but possible on fantasy. However, under the present political scenario in the state and in the light of formation of an all-party government and opposition-less assembly comprising of both the ruling PDA constituents and the opposition NPF; both the regional parties(NPF and NDPP) are eating their own words about the high command culture. Both the regional parties may not have any high command nor don’t need such but certainly they cannot ignore nor get away from the high command of the BJP. Nothing happens at the Centre or states (where BJP is ruling or in coalition with other parties) without the nod from the BJP’s national party leaders(who make up its high command) - prime minister Narendra Modi, home minister Amit Shah and BJP president J.P.Nadda. After NDPP, BJP and also NPF signed the MoU for an all-party government in Nagaland after inclusion of the opposition NPF; it appears that the BJP high command is not very thrilled about the idea. With NPF now part of the government, the BJP will lose much of its bargaining power with the NDPP. There are some within BJP who are inclined to rejoin with NPF for form an alternative government. They feel that the party can head the next government and gain more portfolios. The NPF is also not averse to the idea since it fears being marginalized if it remains in opposition before the next election. The NDPP has put an end to this by roping in NPF as part of the government. The BJP is also unwilling to forget how NPF rejected continuance of the pre-poll DAN alliance in 2018. While both NDPP and the BJP state unit have okayed the all-party government, the BJP headquarters is seeking some clarification on the matter and the objective- pressurizing the Centre to secure an early solution to the Naga political issue upon which the whole idea was pursued. Whether the regional parties like it or not, they seem susceptible to high command culture.
DailyDevotion Christ-Awareness
…and I will give you rest. —Matthew 11:28
Whenever anything begins to disintegrate your life with Jesus Christ, turn to Him at once, asking Him to re-establish your rest. Never allow anything to remain in your life that is causing the unrest. Think of every detail of your life that is causing the disintegration as something to fight against, not as something you should allow to remain. Ask the Lord to put awareness of Himself in you, and your selfawareness will disappear. Then He will be your all in all. Beware of allowing your self-awareness to continue, because slowly but surely it will awaken selfpity, and self-pity is satanic. Don’t allow yourself to say, “Well, they have just misunderstood me, and this is something over which they should be apologizing to me; I’m sure I must have this cleared up with them already.” Learn to leave others alone regarding this. Simply ask the Lord to give you Christ-awareness, and He will steady you until your completeness in Him is absolute. A complete life is the life of a child. When I am fully conscious of my awareness of Christ, there is something wrong. It is the sick person who really knows what health is. A child of God is not aware of the will of God because he is the will of God. When we have deviated even slightly from the will of God, we begin to ask, “Lord, what is your will?” A child of God never prays to be made aware of the fact that God answers prayer, because he is so restfully certain that God always answers prayer. If we try to overcome our self-awareness through any of our own commonsense methods, we will only serve to strengthen our self-awareness tremendously. Jesus says, “Come to Me…and I will give you rest,” that is, Christ-awareness will take the place of self-awareness. Wherever Jesus comes He establishes rest— the rest of the completion of activity in our lives that is never aware of itself.

NAGALAND POST, DIMAPUR SATURDAY, AUGUST 21, 2021
F
or over a year and half now, there has been a sort of World War raging on Planet Earth with coronavirus pandemic (Covid 19) having no distinctions regarding its victims irrespective of nationality and/or status. There is also threat of a third wave. The general media has of course been covering all aspects of it world-wide. At great risk front line warriors like the scientists, medical teams, police and other security forces fully supported by Governments, Church and civil society orgnisations (CSOs), even individuals are reportedly doing their best and we pray that someone somewhere will eventually find a final vaccine to combat the pandemic ultimately. Meanwhile, we have to live with its variant and strictly follow the necessary protocols of safety as long as the virus is floating and attacking ceaselessly and vigorously. Many people still do not follow standard operating protocols like keeping two yards distance, wearing face masks, not to speak of regularly sanitizing hands and avoiding crowded places. We seem to have accepted the negative things as normal almost everywhere. So we have all the further shortcomings we are now afflicted with including increasing coronavirus infections through contacts from point zero a few months ago. There is no unity in consensus socially or even politically so far. When we consider all aspects of our everyday life we find so many anomalies, contradictionsand the like too numerous to our detriment. Births and deaths, sorrows and joys, good and bad times, tears and laughter are very much part of one’s life and it is up to us as how to deal with them accordingly. Meanwhile, we are also concerned about our everyday life which must go on and we are beginning to realize the value of what we can make good use of resources in our very own land. Politics, economic, educational and all other aspects of society are taking new directions during this pandemic which ought to benefit us hopefully in the long run. These in spite of portending climate change the world over. However, the anoma-
lies that abound in our society also indicate our general tendency to disregard civic sense and rule of law. On the wall just below the old MLA hostel in Kohima, there is a graffiti which proclaims: “The difference between Singapore and Nagaland? Civic Sense!” Present/current situation At this very ongoing moment, the Naga voice as a whole is still yet to be in consensus formally with regard to the resolution of the protracted Indo-Naga issue with Government of India (GoI). The various tribal Hohos and other CSOs have in principle come together in understanding with Working Committee (WC) of Naga National Political Groups, State Legislature and the various Church Councils of whichever denominations. Just a few days ago, even the ruling PDA and Opposition NPF plus two Independents have formed an Opposition-less Govt. labeled “Nagaland United Government’’ purportedly in the interests of expediting the solution of the protracted Indo-Naga issue. Regarding this development certain quarters have alleged the avarice to share in the loaves and fishes before the next political development. Formation of the Core Committee with its five-point resolutions has been described as “delaying tactics’’.The Angami Public Organization has, however, lauded the move. So forth and so on. Be that as it may, let us have benefit of doubt by hoping that our elected Legislators are essentially honourable and do have the welfare and interests of their constituents at heart and of course, intention to foster peace, development and prosperity and as early as possible bring to pass the decades-long aspirations of the Naga people. Issues involved GoI is emphatic that the Indo-Naga issue has to be settled within framework of the Indian Constitution. Independence is out of question. Also, there will be no territorial integration of contiguous Naga inhabited areas in Manipur, Assam and Arunachal Pradesh. Of Naga areas in Myanmar, this has international ramifications and so has to be
approached at another level. A Framework Agreement has also been reached with NSCN-IM. However, its Chairman, Q. Tuccu has been insistent that for the sake of exercising flexibility, his group cannot forego the Naga National Flag and Yehzabo (Constitution). These two aspects can be sorted out through accommodating dialogue. Arguments for and against would be too detailed to include here. Another point raised by this group is its version of a Pan Naga Hoho which envisages having overall influence in practically all aspects of the Naga Dimension especially without territorial integration and would not be acceptable to the general public. As it is, full details of NSCN(IM)’s Framework Agreement with GoI is yet to be made public so far. According to Ato Kilonser of GPRN/NSCN, Kitovi Zhimomi who is also Convener of Working Committee (WC), Naga National Political Groups (NNPGs) has stated that non-declaration of the contents of post solution structure by any group is unacceptable and “secrecy by any entity at this time is a betrayal of people’s trust”. NSCN-IM’s demand for exclusive rights over Intangki reserved forest compounded by Nagaland Govt.’s inaction in dealing with this is subject to debate and unacceptable to majority of Nagas particularly the Zeliangrongs. It can reestablish its CHQ elsewhere. Moreover, NSCN-IM needs to sort out its differences with the Meiteis, Kukis and Zeliangrongs in Manipur and Assam. These need to be ironed out by the powers that be for positive outcome. Both States are ruled in alliance as in the centre and are therefore in a strong position to convince the NSCN-IM to extend and also to receive the olive branch. For that matter, our now Opposition-less Govt. is also an allied one. Interlocutor’s mission Governor R.N. Ravi is also the Interlocutor representing GoI. His mission while not enviable would ensure his place in Naga history with consequent accolades or criticisms depending on his success or failure. As it is, he is dealing

on three fronts. On the first he has reiterated that the Agreed Position concerning practically all aspects of the Naga dimension had been reached with the NNPGs who in turn have the support of the Tribal Hohos. That is acceptable insofar as concerning give and take position. The second front concerns the stand of NSCNIM being insistent on Naga National Flag, Yehzabo and Pan Naga Hoho. There could be other conditions like “Shared Sovereignty” which needs specific clarification and/or elaboration. For instance, two neighbouring countries are independent nations with their own sovereignty which literally means supreme and independent political authority. So, if the Naga imbroglio is to be resolved within Indian constitution, there are two possible ways. One is for Indian Parliament to pass an Act ceding full Independence to the Naga Nation. The other is at most, concede a higher status to the new Naga dimension. The territorial boundaries of Nagaland with neighbouring States can be resolved through dialogue but with certain criteria for our Naga brethren inhabiting contiguous areas in the other States. It so happens too, that the Interlocutor, as Governor, has some matters to resolve with our Hon’ble Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio. These include facilitating the solution with NSCNIM and NNPGs vis-a-vis GoI as also dealing with the financial irregularities in various departments as pointed out in the Report of the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) of India, Nagaland. Governor’s Role Article 154 of the Constitution of India vests the executive powers of the State in the Governor who exercises it either directly or through officers subordinate to him in accordance with the Constitution under Article 163. Under Article 163, the Governor as constitutional head exercises all powers under the Constitution “on the aid and advice of the Council of Ministers.” It includes summoning and proroguing the session of State Legislature, Promulgation of Ordinances, giving assent to Bills and appoint-
ing the Council of Ministers. There are certain functions which are possibly to be exercised by the Governor on his/her discretion as sending report to the President under article 256 and reserving Bill for the consideration of the President under Article 254(2). As regards the IndoNaga issue he will not make a move until and unless the Council of Ministers conveys to him officially that all Nagaland Legislators, NSCN (IM) and NNPGs are of one accord to ink the way for a new Naga dimension. However, in the event, Heaven forbid, if any of the entities remains rigid in its stance, the Governor might recommend President’s Rule under article 256 and carry out his mission as per directive of GoI. Or, in a less harsh move the Legislative Assembly may be put in “suspended animation”. This would be more tolerable than having all 60 of our Legislatorsresigning en masse as has been suggested by some quarters including NPCC President K. Therie. Unity in Consensus The Naga Rising has called for Unity for Purpose. May it be added the Need for Naga Unity in Consensus also. The time is ripe since Prime Minister Narendra Modi is committed to resolve the Naga issue. This has also been reiterated by Union Minister of State for External Affairs and Education Rajkumar Ranjan Singh when he interacted with the media at Kohima a few days ago on Tuesday, August 17. As such, it is to fervently hope that the “Nagaland United Government”, NSCN-IM and NNPGs thrash out whatever differences in the spirit of give and take in the larger interest of the entire Naga Nation. By all accounts, GoI may be willing to concede if our leaders in general consent to accept say, 80 per cent rather than insist on 100 per cent. In politics things can be resolved with good will also. All Nagas appreciate the commitment of the national workers be they of the NSCN (IM) and NNPGs for striving and even sacrificing for our Homeland. Herewith it must also be mentioned that almost every Naga family has some relative or the other connected to the various entities. This apart,
the general public has been supporting the Naga movement willingly or otherwise, covertly or overtly and unfortunately, there have also been complaints galore of unabated taxation. Moreover, the general public is engaged in their various day to day activities as government employees or otherwise, earning their livelihoods and this in a deeper sense also defines them as national workers. Therefore, it is imperative for everyone concerned to unite and bat for a solution putting aside major differencesto usher in an era wherein we can devote our energies and talents to sustain the Naga Saga. To quote British statesman, Sir Winston Churchill, If we open a quarrel between past and present, we shall find that we have lost the future. Initially, this may seem difficult primarily because we Nagas in general in spite of our many fine qualities, tend to avoid committing ourselves for most matters of public concern unless directly affected individually or seemingly benefits others. However, when some sort of solution is imminent, more than many are in the forefront rush to take some credit whatsoever. It is time our leaders vouch for a statesman who, as the First among Equals, will steer the process without any more delays legitimate or otherwise, for an early solution which must be well before the next general elections to the Nagaland Legislative Assembly slated for early 2023. Failing this, we are most likely going back to square one. Can Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio rise to this once in a lifetime opportunity? Not the least The Holy Bible states: “Everything that happens in this world happens at the time God chooses” (Ecclesiastes 3:1). Our Almighty God, in His Divine way, took some centuries to answer the prayers of the tortured but imperishable ancient Israelites for freedom. Nevertheless, let us fervently pray and believe that the Good Lord will see fit to time now the Unity of all Nagas in Consensus and sequenced ultimate fulfillment of our decades old aspirations. Kuknalim Jack T. Chakhesang
Equality is a levelling process
he Naga tribes were roughly classified into the following four categories: The southern Nagas, Western Nagas, Central Nagas and Eastern Nagas. In an obvious manner, Nagas have always emphasised on equality, unity, integrity, uniqueness and the Naga identity. However, our practical differences ahead of us were still too wide and had far reaching effect and consequences from the ground realities. In that sense our tradition, culture, uniqueness and Naga identity will never match with the present advancement of the modern world and its civilisation. Nagas need not show and maintain our redundant attitude in the name of Naga traditions and culture in any manner.
Social equality, civil equality, political equality, economic equality, equality of opportunity and education are of paramount importance especially in our Nagaland context at this juncture. For example, by political equality, we mean equal access of everyone to the avenues of political authority. All citizens must possess similar political rights, they should have similar voice in the working of the government and they should have equal opportunities to actively participate in the political life and affairs of the state. Political equality guarantees the enjoyment of the similar political rights to all citizens. Again economic equality is closely related to political equality. Political equality is never real unless it is accompanied with
virtual economic liberty. Presently, we have the so called 14th tribes of Nagaland comprising the ENPO ( Eastern Naga People’s Organization), CNTC (Central Naga Tribe’s Council), TPO (Tenyimi People’s Organization) and as of now TPO tops the political authority as Chief Minister of Nagaland, and CNTC ranks in 2nd as Deputy Chief Minister of Nagaland, and in such a way that if there is any new development in the process of opposition-less government, then chances should go to the ENPO to maintain equality and balance of the State without bias. Otherwise, there would be havoc every now and then in Nagaland from all aspects. Y.L Jami IAS (Retd.) Kushiabill, Dimapur
Reader’s Post Sir,
On women representation
Society encourages women to be educated and independent, there is no doubt that Nagaland ensures the safety of women, however, safety does not translate to equality. The vision of justice that many Naga women like me dream about is based on a world where both genders march together and build a just society. It is not a crime to allow participation of women in dialogues and decision-making. How come the women were not a part of the recent consultative meeting? There is a myriad of problems in the state and the participation of women should be encouraged not because men cannot do it alone, but because we are all equal. NAGALAND POST, DIMAPUR SATURDAY, AUGUST 21, 2021
Vajpayee were ideal leaders Centre prepared to tackle 3rd wave: Thakur Nehru, of Indian democracy: Nitin Gadkari
SHIMLA, AUG 20 (PTI): The Centre is fully ready to tackle a possible third wave of COVID-19 and a provision of Rs 23,123 crore has been made for this purpose, Union Information and Broadcasting Minister Anurag Thakur said on Friday. He said special emphasis is being given to strengthening paediatric care amid apprehension that the third wave may affect children more than others. Thakur, who is on a five-day ‘Jan Ashirwaad Yatra’ in his home state Himachal Pradesh, was speaking to reporters here. This is his maiden visit to the state since being sworn in as a Union Cabinet minister last month. The Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led government is fully ready to tackle a possible third wave of COVID-19. A provision of Rs 23,123 crore has been made to deal with it, said Thakur,
who is also the minister for youth affairs and sports. Special emphasis is being given to strengthening paediatric care as experts fear that the third wave may affect children more than others. The Centre has also set aside Rs 35,000 crore for free Covid vaccination, he said. Some exper ts have warned that the third wave of COVID-19 may affect children more while others have said there is little reason to believe this theory. However, experts concur that there is a need to improve paediatric Covid services in the country. So far, India has reported 3,23,58,829 COVID-19 cases and 4,33,589 deaths due to the disease, according to the Union health ministry. Thakur said when the second wave of the pandemic hit the country, no one knew oxygen cylinders
Anurag Thakur
would be needed. Now, there are plenty of oxygen cylinders in the country. He said he is lucky to have had the opportunity to work under a visionary leader like PM Modi. He said he was among the three-four people who used to attend meetings with Modi on handling the Covid situation in the country and witnessed the PM’s relentless efforts to deal with the pandemic. India faced a brutal second wave of COVID-19 in April-May. During this
period, the country reported a large number of daily deaths, while overstretched hospitals scrambled to maintain a steady supply of oxygen for patients. Thakur started his ‘Jan Ashirwaad Yatra’ from Parwanoo in Solan district on Thursday. He will cover a distance of 623 km across four Lok Sabha constituencies and 37 assembly segments in eight districts in the hill state. Accompanied by state minister Suresh Bhardwaj and Shimla MP Suresh Kashyap, Thakur said that a total of Rs 4,200 crore will be spent on various health sector projects in Himachal Pradesh. He said Rs 437 crore will also be spent on the PGI Satellite Centre in Una. Sharing his vision for Himachal Pradesh, Thakur said over the next 10 years, the art and culture of the state will be promoted
not just in India but also abroad. There is a need to promote and showcase the art and culture of Himachal Pradesh which varies from Kinnaur’s kettle to Chamba’s ‘thaal’ and handkerchief and from Kangra’s paintings to ‘natis’ (dances) of different areas, he said. As far as the folklore of the hill state is concerned, its melodious music has a special significance, he added. Replying to a question about building a sports stadium in Shimla, Thakur said stadiums will be built at all those places where land is available for the purpose. He said he wants to build stadiums that can not only be used for sports but will also be tourist attractions. He said the cricket stadium built in Dharamshala during his tenure as BCCI president is an added attraction for tourists.
NEW DELHI, AUG 20 (AGENCIES): Union minister and former Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) chief Nitin Gadkari has hailed former Prime Ministers Jawaharlal Nehru and Atal Bihari Vajpayee as two “ideal leaders of Indian democracy”. The Road Transport and Highways minister said that ruling party and Opposition leaders should “introspect” and act with dignity for a healthy democracy. He made the comments while responding to a question asked by a news channel anchor on the Opposition’s protests during the monsoon session of Parliament which ended two days ahead of its schedule. “Vajpayee aur Nehru, yeh Hindustan ke loktantra ke do adarsh neta the, aur dono kehte the ki main
Nitin Gadkari
apne loktantrik maryada ka paalan karunga (Vajpayee and Nehru were the two ideal leaders of Indian democracy. Both the leaders used to say that they would act according to the democratic dignity),” Gadkari told Hindi news channel News Nation at an event. He further said that Atalji’s legacy is a source of inspiration for all leaders and Nehru has also made a big contribution to Indian democracy. Gadkari was
asked to respond on the nature of current leadership in Indian democracy and disruptions in Parliament. Senior BJP leader said both ruling and opposition parties must introspect. He said the roles of parties keep changing as the one who is in Opposition today will be leading the government tomorrow, and those who are in power today will be in Opposition. He said that a “strong Opposition” is necessary to keep a “check on the government” in a healthy democracy. “Therefore, the Congress party should become a strong Opposition and do the work of a responsible Opposition,” he added. Gadkari also said that the recent disruptions in Parliament pained him and urged everyone to act with dignity.
Personal liberty important aspect WB: CBI seeks details of incidents reported during post-poll violence of constitutional mandate: SC NEW DELHI, AUG 20 (PTI): Merely because an arrest can be made as it is lawful does not mandate that it must be made, the Supreme Court has said, while observing that personal liberty is an important aspect of constitutional mandate. The apex court said if arrest is made routine, it could cause “incalculable harm” to the reputation and self-esteem of a person. A bench of Justices Sanjay Kishan Kaul and Hrishikesh Roy said if the investigating officer of a case does not believe that the accused will abscond or disobey the summons, he or she is not required to be produced before the court in custody. “We may note that personal liberty is an important aspect of our constitutional mandate. The occasion to arrest an accused during in-
vestigation arises when custodial investigation becomes necessary or it is a heinous crime or where there is a possibility of influencing the witnesses or accused may abscond,” the bench said in its order passed earlier this week. The top court passed the order while hearing a plea against the Allahabad High Court verdict which had dismissed an application seeking anticipatory bail in a case in which FIR was registered seven years ago. The bench noted that contrary to the observations made in the apex court verdict of 1994 on how a police officer has to deal with a scenario of arrest, the trial courts are stated to be insisting on arrest as a pre-requisite formality to take charge sheet on record in view of provisions of section 170 of the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC). Section 170 of the CrPC deals with cases to be sent to magistrate when
evidence is sufficient. The top court said the word ‘custody’ appearing in section 170 of the CrPC does not contemplate either police or judicial custody but it merely connotes the presentation of accused by the investigating officer before the court while filing charge sheet. It noted that section 170 of the CrPC does not impose an obligation on the officer-in-charge to arrest the accused at the time of filing of charge sheet. “Merely because an arrest can be made because it is lawful does not mandate that arrest must be made,” the bench said, adding, “If arrest is made routine, it can cause incalculable harm to the reputation and selfesteem of a person.” While setting aside the high court order, the bench noted that the petitioner had already joined the investigation before approaching the apex court and charge sheet was ready to be filed.
superintendents of police, called from across the country, the officials said. The overall probe will be supervised by Additional Director Ajay Bhatnagar. The Calcutta High Court on Thursday had ordered a CBI inquiry into alleged killings, rape and crimes against women during post-poll violence in West Bengal. A five-judge bench, passing a unanimous judgment on a batch of PILs seeking an independent probe into incidents of alleged violence after the polls which the r uling TMC won by an overwhelming majority, also ordered constitution of a special investigation team (SIT) to probe all other cases. The SIT will include Suman Bala Sahoo, Soumen Mitra and Ranveer Kumar, all IPS officers of the West Bengal cadre. The bench will monitor the investigations by both the CBI and the SIT, and it has asked them to submit status reports to the
Facebook removes Rahul Gandhi’s post for policy violation
NEW DELHI, AUG 20 (PTI): After Twitter, Facebook has removed a content posted by Congress leader Rahul Gandhi that identified the family of a nine-year-old victim of alleged rape and murder in Northwest Delhi, saying it violated the social media platform’s policies. According to sources, Facebook has informed
Gandhi and the National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) about the removal of the posts from Facebook and Instagram. Earlier this week, Facebook had written to Gandhi asking him to remove the said post from Instagram -- Facebook’s photosharing platform. “We have taken ac-
tion to remove the content as it was in violation of our policies,” a Facebook spokesperson said in an emailed statement on Friday. Facebook takes action against a content if it violates its Community Standards or upon receiving a valid legal request as per Indian laws. Last week, NCPCR had asked Facebook to take
appropriate action against Gandhi’s Instagram profile over violation of provisions of the Juvenile Justice Act, 2015, the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, 2012, and the Indian Penal Code, and demanded the removal of the video from the platform. Following the communication from Facebook to Gandhi earlier week,
NCPCR withdrew its direction to the company to appear before the commission with an explanation over non-action regarding Gandhi’s post. Earlier this month, Gandhi had met the family of the nine-year-old girl and asserted that he is with them on the path to justice and “will not back down even an inch”.

Bharat trains will include four emergency windows for easy evacuation of passengers in case of emergencies, the officials said. Four disaster lights will also be provided in each coach to be used in the event of failure of all other lights in a disaster situation, they said. The number of emergency push buttons will also be increased from the present two to four. The officials said that a centralised coach monitoring system for all electrical and climate controls and functioning of other vital systems of the train set has been introduced. The trains will have a push back arrangement for reclining of seats for a more comfortable travel experience, they said. The new trains will also have fire survival cables in door circuits, the officials said. The system of air purification has also been reworked with availability of ventilation for three hours in case of failure of power sup-
which erupted after polls and declaration of results was state-wide. Number of persons had died. The women were raped. The house of certain persons who had not supported the party in power were demolished. Their other properties were damaged. Their belongings were looted including the chattels,” the court observed in its order. The bench said there are allegations that the complainants are being threatened to withdraw the cases and a number of cases of murder being claimed as natural death

New Vande Bharat train to have features to aid emergency evacuation NEW DELHI, AUG 20 (PTI): The next set of Vande Bharat trains will come with new facilities, including centralised coach monitoring systems and features specially designed for emergency evacuation, officials said. Prime Minister Narendra Modi this August 15 had announced that 75 Vande Bharat Express trains will connect every corner of the country in 75 weeks of the Amrit Mahotsav of Independence. These will be in addition to the Indian Railways two existing Vande Bharat Express trains. The first was launched on the VaranasiDelhi route and the second on the Katra-Delhi route. The Shatabdi-type semi-high speed trains already have amenities like onboard infotainment, GPS-based passenger information system, CCTV cameras, automatic sliding doors with retractable coach footsteps and zero discharge vacuum-based bio-toilets. without recording FIRs and conducting investigation according to the procedure established by law. Noting that the West Bengal Police has not properly responded to allegations of inaction and tried to downplay them, the bench said, “It certainly needs investigation by an independent agency.” It said three months have lapsed since the matter was taken up by the court, but “no concrete action has been taken by the State, which could inspire confidence except filing affidavits and placing on record thousands of papers.” The bench ordered the West Bengal government to pay compensation to the victims of crimes in accordance with the policy of the State, after due verification. The compensation amount will be directly transferred to their bank accounts. The National Human Rights Commission committee had on July 13 submitted its final report to the court.

Says arrest should not be routinely made
NEW DELHI, AUG 20 (PTI): The CBI has written to the West Bengal director general of police to provide details of all cases of murder, attempt to murder and rape reported during postpoll violence in the state, officials said on Friday. The agency sought the details of such cases from the director general of police in line with a Calcutta High Court order that directed the CBI to take over cases related to murder, rape and atrocities against women during the violence. The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has set up four teams, each headed by joint directors Ramnish, Anurag, Vineet Vinayak and Sampat Meena, to probe the political violence which ensued after the victory of the Trinamool Congress (TMC) on May 2 in a bitterly fought eightphase assembly poll in West Bengal. M U M BA I , AU G 2 0 (IANS): The Finance Ministry has notified amendments to the Foreign Exchange Management Rules to increase in limit on foreign direct investment (FDI) in the insurance sector to 74 per cent. Currently, the cap on FDI in the insurance sector is 49 per cent. As per the Foreign Exchange Management (nondebt instruments) (second amendment) Rules, 2021 notified by the government on Thursday, applications for FDI in private banks having a joint venture or subsidiary in the insurance sector may be addressed to the Reserve Bank of India for consideration in consultation with the Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India to ensure that the limit of foreign investment of 74 per cent for the insurance sector is not breached. In May, the government had notified the Indian Insurance Companies (Foreign Investment)
Amendment Rules, 2021 that makes appointment of resident Indian citizen mandatory, at least one amongst the Chairperson, Managing Director, or Chief Executive Officer. In the Budget session earlier this year, the Parliament approved the raising of FDI limit in insurance from present 49 per cent to 74 per cent. To be able to enhance FDI to 74 per cent level, companies would be required to have minimum 50 per cent independent directors on the board. An exception is given where the chairperson is an independent director. In such case, one-third of directors would be independent.

ing the session, the local unit touched an intra-day high of 74.38 and a low of 74.47 against the US currency. On Wednesday, the rupee had settled at 74.24 against the US dollar. The forex market was closed on Thursday on account of ‘Muharram’. “Rupee fell in the open-
ing session as the dollar rose sharply against its global rivals after the release of FOMC meeting minutes that showed Fed members largely expect that later this year they will reduce the central bank’s emergency monthly purchases,” said Gaurang Somaiyaa, Forex & Bullion Analyst, Motilal Oswal Financial Services. The minutes also magnified the importance of the next few monthly jobs reports, with solid gains needed to meet the Fed’s expectations and show the virus has not begun to again slow the economy. HDFC Securities research analyst Dilip Parmar also said that heavy buying in the dollar has been seen as risk sentiment deteriorates amid concern that the Delta virus strain could derail the global recovery and the US Federal Reserves may start tapering earlier than expected. On a weekly basis, the rupee depreciated by 15 paise against the American currency.

It has projected real GDP growth for Q1, Q2, Q3 and Q4 of FY’22 at 21.4 per cent, 7.3 per cent, 6.3 per cent and 6.1 per cent, respectively. Analysts at Japanese brokerage Nomura said last week’s review had signs of RBI policy pivoting towards normalization, pointing out to one of the members of the monetary policy committee also dissented against the “accommodative stance” and the increase in FY22 headline inflation target to 5.7 per cent.

NEW DELHI, AUG 20 (AGENCIES): The resurgence in inflation in May and June above the upper threshold has reignited the debate on the appropriate monetary policy response, said RBI Governor Shaktikanta Das, according to MPC minutes released on Friday. According to Business Standard, Reserve Bank of India released minutes of the August 4-6 Monetary Policy Committee meeting. “The need of the hour is twofold: first, continue the monetary policy support to the economy; and second, remain watchful of any durable inflationary pressures and sustained price momentum in key components so as to bring back the CPI inflation to 4 per cent over a period of time in a non-disruptive manner. “ T h e e c o n o my i s struggling to regain the momentum that had gathered in the second half of 2020-21. Afghans fight back; multiple areas recaptured
Local resistances forces in Baghlan province have recaptured Banu and Pol-e-Hesar districts from the Taliban.
A Twitter account named for the country’s Panjshir Province—itself a hotbed of resistance to the Taliban—shared a report about events in neighboring Baghlan province on Friday in both Persian and English. “Pul-e-Hesar district was taken back from the #Taliban and fighting is raging in Deh-e-Salah and
Banu districts,” the account posted at 8.40am ET. “Local sources say the Taliban have been attacked from several areas and suffered heavy casualties,” they said. Banu and Deh-e-Salah districts were also taken back from the Taliban, according to various reports, including an article on the

sentence in February for violating the terms of a suspended sentence from a 2014 embezzlement conviction that he dismissed as politically motivated. On Friday, British newspaper The Guardian, Germany’s Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung and France’s Le Monde published Navalny’s article, in which he called corruption “the universal, ideolo-gyfree basis for the flourishing of a new Authoritarian International, from Russia to Eritrea, My-anmar to Venezuela.” He challenged international leaders to show a stronger political will to track financial trails from Rus-sia and other countries beset by corruption and to more resolutely target corrupt officials. “Until personal sanctions are imposed on oligarchs, primarily those in the entourage of Putin – the role model for all the world’s corrupt officials and businessmen – any an-
ti-corruption rhetoric from the West will be perceived as game-playing and hot air,” Navalny said. In a separate Instagram post Friday, Navalny again thanked Russian pilots and ambulance doctors for saving his life after he fell into a coma while aboard a domestic flight from Siberia to Moscow on Aug. 20, 2020. He was transferred from a hospital in Siberia to a Berlin hospital two days later. Labs in Germany, France and Sweden, and tests by the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons, established that he was exposed to a Soviet-era Novichok nerve agent. Reflecting on his poisoning and recovery, Navalny also thanked his supporters with a note of his usual sardonic humor. “Thanks to you all it all went fine, I survived and landed in prison,” he said on Instagram. He added sarcastically that he also should thank Russia’s corruption for helping disable Russia’s se-cret services along with other sectors. “The level of secret operations is on par with health care, education and municipal services,” Navalny quipped.

Joe Biden and Kamala Harris
WASHINGTON, AUG 20 (AGENCIES): What did the President know and when did he know it? The searching query that underscored the Watergate scandal is scorching Washington again after remarks by US President Joe Biden that he was never told that such a rapid collapse in Afghanistan was possible was contested by leaks claiming there were warnings and red flags galore that Taliban would overrun Kabul if the US left too quickly. Under attack for the botched withdrawal that has stranded thousands of Americans and Afghan cohorts in the strife-torn country, Biden is scheduled address the issue later on
Friday, with vice-president Kamala Harris -- who is also under fire for being indifferent to the plight of women -- by his side. Harris is scheduled to leave on an Asia trip, with stops in Singapore and Vietnam, later in the day, trailed by exhortation contained in a letter signed by 85 individuals and groups urging her to “take actions to protect Afghan women and girls and to address this unfolding human rights and humanitarian catastrophe.” The crisis buffeting the Biden-Harris administration comes amid a continuing stand-off in Kabul where US forces are struggling to evacuate Americans stranded outside the airport perimeter controlled by Taliban.
Attack on Malian military convoy, 15 dead
BAMAKO, AUG 20 (AP): Gunmen ambushed a Malian army convoy in central Mali on Thursday, killing at least 15 soldiers, the army said, just days after another attack in the country’s north left several dozen civilians dead. The soldiers had been heading from the town of Douentza to Boni when it came under attack by a vehicle that exploded as it passed, the Malian military announced. Intense gunfire soon followed, the statement said.
The attack has not been claimed, but bears the mark of armed groups linked to al- Qaeda that have been active in the region for years. Islamic extremists grabbed control of major towns across northern Mali in 2012. A French-led military operation the following year dispersed the militants, but they have mounted frequent attacks against Malian soldiers and UN peacekeepers in the years since. Islamic extrem-ists
have also made inroads into central Mali, destabilizing the region. France, the former colonial power, has announced it will withdraw more than 2,000 troops from its anti-extremism force in Africa’s Sahel region by early next year. Islamic militants, though, have continued to launch devastating attacks, and hundreds of civilians have died this year in a series of massacres targeting villages along Mali’s border with Niger.

China approves three-child policy with sops BEIJING, AUG 20 (PTI): China’s national legislature on Friday formally endorsed the three-child policy mooted by the ruling Communist Party, in a major policy shift aimed to prevent a steep decline in birth rates in the world’s most populous country. The revised Population and Family Planning Law, which allows Chinese couples to have three chil-dren, was passed by the Standing Committee of the National People’s Congress (NPC). In an apparent attempt to address the reluctance of the Chinese couples to have more children due to mounting costs, the amended law has also passed more social and economic support measures to address the concerns. The new law stipulates that the country will take supportive measures, including those in finances, taxes, insurance, education, housing and employment, to reduce families’

KABUL, AUG 20 (IANS): Afghan families do not know the whereabouts of their sons since earlier this week after they went to the Hamid Karzai International Airport in Kabul in an attempt to leave the country following the Taliban takeover. They are not among those who have been either killed or seriously injured amid the chaos at the airport that began on Sunday. At least 40 casualties, both fatalities and serious injuries, from shootings, stampeding and falling from aircraft have been reported since Monday. Afghan media reported that Faisal, 25, was a graduate of the Sharia faculty of Kabul University who went with other young men to the airport at 7 a.m. on Monday but has not been heard from since. “My son has been missing since Monday,” said Habibullah, a father of a missing person. “According to the news, forty people were killed and wounded since Monday, exact figures remain unknown,” said Humayoun, a relative of one missing person named Faisal.

burdens as well as the cost of raising and educating children, state-run China Daily reported. The NPC has revised the law to implement the central leadership’s decision to cope with new circumstances in social and economic development and promote balanced long-term population growth, the report said. In May this year, the
ruling Communist Party of China (CPC) approved a relaxation of its strict two-child policy to allow all couples to have up to three children. China permitted all couples to have two children in 2016, scrapping the draconian decades-old one-child policy which policymakers blame for the demographic crisis in the country.
Chinese officials claim the one-child policy implemented for over three decades has prevented over 400 million births. The decision to permit the third child came after this month’s once-in-adecade census showed that China’s population grew at the slowest pace to 1.412 billion amid official projections that the decline may begin as early as next year.

M O S C OW, AU G 2 0 (AP): Imprisoned Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny marked the anniver-sary of a poisoning attack against him by urging global leaders Friday to put more attention on combating corruption and to target tycoons close to Russian President Vladimir Putin. In an article published in three European newspapers, Navalny chided Western leaders for relegat-ing the fight against corruption to a “secondary agenda” item and said that graft plays an essential part in policy failures, including in Iraq and Afghanistan. “It is precisely the fact that the West failed to notice’ the total corruption in Afghanistan – that Western leaders preferred not to talk about a topic they found embarrassing – which was the most crucial factor in the victory of the Taliban,” Navalny wrote. Navalny was arrested in January upon returning to Moscow from Germany, where he spent five months recovering from a nerve agent poisoning that he blames on the Kremlin. Russian officials reject the accusation. The politician and anti-corruption activist, who is Putin’s most determined political foe, received a 2 1/2-year prison
situation from Indian TV news channel Republic World. Tajuden Soroush, senior correspondent for Iran International, a Persian TV station based in London, U.K., also tweeted about the events in Baghlan province on Friday, citing former Afghan government officials. “Local sources say the Taliban have been

Tajuden Soroush, senior correspondent for Iran International, a Persian TV station based in London, U.K., also tweeted about the events in Baghlan province on Friday, citing former Afghan government officials. There was some confusion on social media about exactly what areas had been captured and whether fighting was still taking place, however. Conflicting reports suggested Banu and Deh-e-Salah had not yet been captured at the time of writing, while the situation on the ground appears fluid. Reports also suggested the Baghlan’s Andarab district was an impending target of the anti-Taliban resistance fighters, with some reports claiming Andarab had already been recaptured.

KABUL, AUG 20 (AGENCIES): Resistance fighters in Afghanistan have recaptured three areas in the country’s Baghlan province from the Taliban, according to reports on Friday, as locals fight back against the recent takeover. Anti-Taliban forces reportedly took back control of the Banu, Pol-e-Hesar and De Salah districts in Baghlan province, while around 60 Taliban fighters were killed or injured in the fighting. The Taliban advanced rapidly throughout the country ahead of the August 31 deadline for U.S. troop withdrawal. Chaotic scenes at Kabul airport following the Taliban’s entry into the city prompted significant criticism of the Biden administration’s handling of the situation. However, local forces on the ground appear to mounting a fightback against the Taliban. Photos and videos have been circulating on social media on Friday along with reports about the apparent clashes between the Taliban and local resistance.

apan’s space agency plans to bring soil samples back from the Mars region ahead of the US and Chinese missions now operating on Mars, in hopes of finding clues to the planet’s origin and traces of possible life. The Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency, or JAXA, plans to launch an explorer in 2024 to land on the Martian moon Phobos to collect 10 grams (0.35 ounce) of soil and bring it back to Earth in 2029. The rapid return trip would put Japan ahead of the United States and China in bringing back samples from the Martian region despite starting later, project manager Yasuhiro Kawakatsu said in an online news conference Thursday. NASA’s Perseverance rover is operating in a Mars crater where it is to collect
31 samples that are to be returned to Earth with help from the European Space Agency as early as 2031. China landed a spacecraft on Mars in May and plans to bring back samples around 2030. JAXA scientists believe about 0.1 per cent of the surface soil on Phobos came from Mars, and 10 grams could contain about 30 granules, depending on the consistency of the soil, Kawakatsu said. Tomohiro Usui, professor at the Institute of Space and Astronautical Science, said soil on Phobos is likely to be a mixture of material from the moon itself and material from Mars that was spread by sandstorms. Collecting samples from multiple locations on Phobos could provide a greater chance of obtaining possible traces of life from Mars than obtaining soil
from a single location on Mars, he said. Any life forms that might have come from Mars will have died because of harsh solar and cosmic radiation on Phobos, JAXA scientists said. The NASA and the European Space Agency missions focus on potential life forms and evolution of the area of the Jezero crater, believed to be an ancient lake. By studying Phobos soil samples including material from Mars, scientists hope to learn about the evolution of the Martian biosphere, Usui said. He said Japanese research on Phobos and NASA’s samples from specific locations in the Martian crater can complement each other and could lead to answers to questions such as how Martian life, if present, emerged and evolved in time and place. ly, most scientists believed that the human stride was relatively long for efficiency; “this is taught in almost every introductory class and textbook,” Thompson said, explaining the misconception only became truly apparent when he began delving into the literature. To understand, the team decided to compare chimps and humans walking over a range of different speeds. They filmed the animals in 3D as well as reconstructed the human’s stride pattern and hip motions in 3D. Then the team scaled the humans down to the size of the chimpanzees and found that although the human legs were proportionally 112 per cent longer,

their strides were 26.7 per cent shorter. The chimpanzees swivel their hips between 28 and 61 degrees in contrast to the humans, which twisted their pelvises at around 8 degrees. Further, they found that the swiveling hips extended chimps’ stride 5.4 times more, than the human’s diminutive swivel. The findings are detailed in the Journal of Experimental Biology. “I think that chimpanzees use pelvic rotations to try to squeeze every bit of stride length out, otherwise their strides would be -- ab-
solutely -- very small,” said Thompson, explaining that apes and monkeys tend to walk on crouched legs that naturally shorten their stride. On the other hand, one reason why humans ditched swiveling their hips could be that extreme rotations of the hips could throw out the natural swing of our arms and legs -- which counterbalance each other -forcing our muscles to work harder and making walking less efficient; a price that simply might not be worth paying for an increased stride length, Thompson noted. However, a new study showed that chimpanzees take 25 per cent longer strides than we do, thanks to their swiveling hips, which rotate by as much as 61 degree every time they take a step to compensate for their crouched posture and shorter legs. Compared with the strides of our closest primate relatives, even the tallest humans take relatively short steps. “Standardised by size, humans really don’t have long strides,” said Nathan Thompson from the New York Institute of Technology, US. Teichmann stuns Osaka in Cincinnati Masters
OHIO, AUG 20 (REUTERS): An error-prone Naomi Osaka was stunned 3-6, 6-3, 6-3 by Jil Teichmann in the third round of the Western & Southern Open in Cincinnati on Thursday. World number two Osaka cruised through the first set and looked like she would make short work of the Swiss wild card. But world number 76 Teichmann settled down and took the second set, and the momentum swung firmly in her direction in the fourth game of the decider when Osaka missed overhead smashes on back-to-back points, leading her to scream in frustration. The miscues continued to pile up for the four-times Grand Slam champion, who issued her 41st unforced error on match point when she sent a service return long as Teichmann advanced to the quarter-finals with the

easier. But you’ve got to start somewhere.” Osaka will look to find her form ahead of the upcoming U.S. Open in New York, where she is a two-time champion.

Ellis lands IPL deal after being named as T20 WC reserve MELBOURNE, AUG 20 (IANS): Australian pacer Nathan Ellis has landed an Indian Premier League (IPL) contract ahead of the second leg of the league in the UAE. It caps off a whirlwind 24 hours for the 26-year-old, who was named as a travelling reserve in Australia’s squad for the Men’s T20 World Cup on Thursday. “Ellis was being chased by three IPL franchises for the upcoming tournament before agreeing to terms with an unnamed team on Thursday night,” said a report by cricket.com.au. Though the name of the franchise hasn’t been disclosed yet, Cricket Australia (CA) is expected to approve his association with the team soon. Ellis recently made his debut for Australia in the third T20I against Bangladesh in Dhaka. He dismissed Mahdmullah, Mehidy Hasan and Mustafizur Rahman off the final three balls of the innings to become the first cricketer to take a hat-trick on T20I debut. He joined Brett Lee and Ashton Agar to become the third Australian to take a hat-trick in a T20I match. Ellis, who went unsold in the player auction in January, is supposed to be one of the few international players who are set to replace Australian players with contracts like Pat Cummins, Kane Richardson, Jhye Richardson and Riley Meredith, who may not take part in the second leg of the IPL.

The first batch of the Indian team, led by PCI President Deepa Malik, have arrived in Tokyo. T Mariyappan, who is India’s flag bearer at the Games, has also arrived in Tokyo and there will be
a lot of expectations from the para high jumper to clinch his second Paralympic gold in Tokyo. Mariyappan made a brilliant leap of 1.86 metres at the recent National selection trials. “It was one of my best performances (at selection trials) since Rio 2016,” said Mariyappan, who had suffered a permanent disability to his right leg in a

Lalremsiami appointed as hockey chief coach by Mizoram Government
UFA (RUSSIA), AUG 20 (PTI): A gold medal remained elusive for India at the junior world wrestling championship as both Bhateri (65kg) and Sanju Devi (62kg) lost their respective finals rather tamely while Saneh (72kg) was stretchered out of the mat after enduring a knee injury in the bronze play-off here on Friday. Sanju Devi had managed comeback wins in her previous bouts but Friday was not her day as Russia’s Alina Kasabieva took the gold with a technical superiority win. Kasabieva first affected a take down move and then got a two-point throw. There was still hope but once the Russian got hold of Sanju’s leg and got the desired grip to execute ‘fitley’, there was no chance for the Indian to come back. The match was over inside the first period. Bhateri also failed to put up a fight and lost the 65kg final by technical superiority to Moldova’s Itina Ringaci. Bhateri’s strategy to play a waiting game proved to be a mistake as she hardly attacked.
AIZAWL, AUG 20 (PTI): Indian hockey player Lalremsiami, who was part of the women’s team which finished fourth at the Tokyo Olympics, has been appointed as the chief coach, a group A post, under the Mizoram sports and youth services department. Lalremsiami, the first female Olympian from Mizoram, was made a chief coach in hockey discipline under the state sports and youth services department, a Group-A post similar to assistant director rank. “Proud to announce that Govt. of Mizoram has approved the appointment of Ms Lalremsiami, National Hockey Player and the only Olympian from #Mizoram at the Tokyo Olympic 2020 to the post of Chief Coach (Hockey) Group-A post under Sports & Youth Services Department,” Chief Minister Zoramthanga wrote on his official Twitter handle late

Thurday night. On Wednesday, the state government had allotted a house plot measuring 691.85 square metres to Lalremsiami in her home town Kolasib. The land belonged to state Land Resource & Water and Soil Conversation department. The state government had earlier also announced a cash reward of Rs 25 lakh for Lalremsiami, out of which, Rs 10 lakh was handed over to her mother Lalzarmawii on June 24. Lalremsiami will arrive in Mizoram on August 25 and State sports director Lalsangliana said a special function will be held at Vanapa Hall in Aizawl on August 26 to give the hockey star a warm welcome.
“The remaining Rs 15 lakh cash incentive, job appointment letter and other rewards will be handed over to her during the ceremony,” he told PTI. The 21-year-old from Mizoram’s Kolasib town, which borders Assam, is known to be the first female Olympian from a sportsloving Mizoram. The last Olympian from the state was archer C Lalremsanga, who represented India at the 1992 Barcelona and 1996 Atlanta Olympics. Lalremsiami and her teammates had come tantalising close to a medal at the Tokyo Olympics and finished fourth after losing 3-4 to defending champions Great Britain.

ISL has been a blessing, says Jhingan KOCHI, AUG 20 (IANS): Top Indian footballer Sandesh Jhingan may have moved to Croatian top-tier side HNK Sibenik but he has not forgotten the role the Indian Super League (ISL) has played in his development over the years. Jhingan made his ISL debut with Kerala Blasters FC in 2014 in what was also the inaugural season of the league. The very first season, he caught everyone’s attention through some fine defending and went on to win the ‘Emerging-Player-of-the-Season’ award. He stayed with the southern club till 2020. “The ISL, the more I say how it has benefited me the less it is. It’s been a blessing to me. With due respect, I-League is also fantastic. But ISL, it gave us exposure,” Jhingan said
Sandesh Jhingan
on Thursday. “As kids we all used to watch the Premier League, the Serie A, the Spanish League and I always felt that these players [in those leagues] were untouchable [too good]. That they were from different planets. Through ISL when we got the exposure to play against some of those players, true that they were not as young
as before, but when you saw them from close, when you heard them share their experiences, you realised it [reaching their level] wasn’t something unachievable, you realised if you worked hard and you were ready to make the sacrifices, you could be up there [with them],” said the 28-yearold. “A n d t h e n w h e n you got the opportunity to play for the national team against oppositions like Iran, you realised the difference was not that much. So, the league really opened my view. That you can be there playing against these top players. The list of these top players is really long over the years [Nicolas Anelka, Roberto Carlos, Florent Malouda, Alessandro Del Piero and Robert Pires -- to name but
a few]. “It’s been a true blessing. I am happy that it started at the right time for me. I was just 20 when I signed for Kerala Blasters FC.
